Taylor Swift ‘s “Eras Tour” concert film is breaking records before it even hits theaters.

With a week until the movie graces the big screen, it has surpassed $100 million worldwide in advance ticket sales, according to its official distributor AMC Theatres . These revenues encompass all showtimes, locations and circuits playing “Eras Tour” across the globe, not just AMC locations.

Swift’s concert film, which captures her record-breaking stadium tour, opens in theaters on Oct. 13 — to coincide with the pop star’s lucky number — and will screen in 8,500 cinemas across 100 countries.

Swift’s “Eras Tour” has been shattering expectations since tickets first went on sale. It set a single-day ticket sales record for AMC Theatres with $26 million in North America, besting the all-time benchmark previously held by “Spider-Man: No Way Home” ($16.9 million). Advance ticket sales are particularly strong in premium large-screen formats like Imax and Dolby Cinema, according to AMC.

“ Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour ” will play at least four showtimes per day on Thursdays, Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays at every AMC theater location in the United States. The cinema chain promises it will “continue to take steps to reach agreements with additional cinema operators throughout the world to play this spectacular Taylor Swift tour-de-force.”

'Taylor Swift: Eras Tour' Movie

Taylor Swift ‘s Eras Tour concert pic has achieved yet another milestone at the global box office .

AMC Theatres, which is distributing the film, announced Monday that Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour has amassed $250 million in worldwide movie ticket sales to rank among the top 20 biggest films of 2023. It’s easily the most successful concert film of all time.

Eras Tour finished Thanksgiving weekend with a North American total of $178.2 million and $71.8 million overseas.

Swift and her team self-financed the $15 million film, which has been playing in theaters from Thursday to Sunday for seven weekends.

The pic has been a boon for cinema owners as the pipeline of content from traditional Hollywood studios slowed due to WGA and SAG-AFTRA strikes. Swift broke with tradition in deciding to partner with AMC, versus a studio, in bringing her secret pic to the big screen.

Eras Tour will return to theaters again this Thursday just as AMC distributes its second film — Beyoncé Renaissance concert pic.

By Friday, Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé will be playing in thousands of theaters across North America. Tracking shows it opening in the $20 million to $25 million range domestically (that compares to $92.8 million for Eras Tour .)

Beyoncé attended a star-studded premiere for her movie in Los Angeles on Nov. 25. Destiny’s Child members Kelly Rowland, Michelle Williams, LaTavia Roberson and LeToya Luckett, along with Janelle Monáe, Issa Rae, Lizzo, Halle and Chloe Bailey, Lupita Nyong’o and Tyler Perry, were among the guests.

Taylor Swift ’s Eras Tour concert film is continuing to reach milestones at the box office.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour crossed $200 million at the global box office over the weekend, the film’s distributor AMC announced in a press release on Monday. The film documenting the acclaimed, career-spanning tour from the pop superstar, 33, hit the major benchmark just three weeks after it arrived in theaters worldwide on Oct. 13.

As of this weekend, the concert film has now brought in a total of $150 million domestically.

This past Thursday through Sunday, the theatrical event grossed $24,575,184 globally — earning $24,575,184 in the U.S. and Canada and $6,494,750 across the 95 international territories where the film is currently screening.

On Nov. 2, the movie directed by Sam Wrench will be released into even more international markets, including Brazil, Hong Kong, India, Indonesia, Malaysia, Singapore, South Korea, Taiwan and Turkey.

When Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour arrived in cinemas, it opened to blockbuster ticket sales of $92.8 million in the U.S., making it the fifth-biggest opening of any theatrical release this year.

During its debut weekend, it also reached No. 1 at the box office in the U.S., Canada, U.K., Mexico, Australia, Germany and the Philippines.

The film featuring footage of the pop star’s Los Angeles concerts in August also shattered records for its genre . During its three-day opening weekend and Thursday night previews alone, The Eras Tour became the highest-grossing concert film of all time, beating out Justin Bieber 's Never Say Never , which earned $73 million total over the course of its 2011 domestic run.

The concert film even broke records before it arrived in theaters. Within just 24 hours of the film being announced, it became AMC’s top earner for single-day ticket sales of all time.

The Grammy winner herself celebrated the release of the on-screen version of her live show with a premiere event in Los Angeles on Oct. 11. The “Cruel Summer” singer stepped out at the screening held at the Grove’s AMC theater in a strapless Oscar De La Renta gown made of textured floral cutouts and posed on a red carpet.

The pop star also gave a speech at the event. She said, “I've never had this much fun in my life as I have had on the Eras Tour. Just the most electric experience of my life and the reason for that is several things like my band, my dancers and crew.”

“We did this show rain or shine in sickness and in health no matter what was going on in our lives,” she continued. “And we did it with a grin on our face because of what greeted us on the other side.”

That night, the hitmaker also took to social media to announce the film was arriving in theaters a day earlier and to express her excitement for the release.

"Look what you genuinely made me do," she wrote in a post on X (formerly known as Twitter).

"I can’t thank you enough for wanting to see this film that so vividly captures my favorite adventure I’ve ever been a part of: The Eras Tour. And the best part is, it’s an adventure we’re still on together," the “Anti-Hero” artist said in reference to the upcoming international leg of the tour .

How The Eras Tour Movie Is Shaping Up For a Historic Box Office Run

T aylor Swift is a business mastermind—the star knows exactly what her fans want and how to deliver just that. High demand for Swift’s history-making Eras Tour essentially broke Ticketmaster, making the ticket-buying process a headache for millions of fans who hoped to see the pop star’s three-hour musical journey through her album eras. But those who missed the live tour will get to see a version of it beginning in October, when the concert film Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour hits theaters across the globe. In the lead-up to the film’s release, Swift’s fans have already proven their buying power, breaking advanced global box office records previously held by other musical artists.

Following its opening weekend, an AMC press report says that the film opened domestically with a total gross of $92.8 million, smashing the domestic opening weekend $73 million record that Justin Bieber set in 2011 with his Never Say Never concert film. The movie brought in an additional $30.7 million from the global box office, bringing the total gross to $123.5 million—officially making Swift’s Eras Tour film the biggest global opening weekend for a concert film ever.

EntTelligence estimates that 4.8 million Swifties attended a showing this past weekend and 80% of the audience were women.

this is like the treaty of versailles for stan twitter https://t.co/3iAtkt09fi — yasmin (@ycsm1n) October 12, 2023

Swift self-produced the project and circumvented the traditional Hollywood distribution process by partnering with AMC Theaters rather than a big studio to distribute the movie—a significant feat only possible for an artist of her stature. A superstar like Swift creates entire news cycles that revolve around her extracurricular activities and the condiments she seemingly eats with her chicken tenders.

Here’s everything you need to know about how Swift made her concert film happen—and just how historic it could be at the box office.

How did Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour get made?

According to Variety , Swift initially held meetings with major studios before her tour started to discuss plans to distribute a pro shot of one of her SoFi Stadium shows in Los Angeles. A studio executive who spoke with Variety said they pitched Swift’s camp but stopped hearing from the pop star’s team this summer. At the end of August, Swift announced that the concert movie would be released in mid-October.

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Taylor Swift (@taylorswift)

Swift partnered directly with AMC Theaters to distribute the film, Variety reported, though the theater does not have exclusive rights to the distribution. The movie will also be released in Cinemark and Regal theaters in over eight thousand movie theaters around the world. Swift put her own money into the movie, according to The New York Times , which reports it “cost Ms. Swift roughly $15 million to make.

Swift is expected to “collect an additional $60 million overseas — at a minimum — over the weekend,” according to the Times .

The deal between Swift and AMC Theaters is lucrative for both parties as they cut out the studio middlemen. According to Variety , “Swift’s camp will receive roughly 57% of ticket sales, with theaters keeping the remaining revenues and AMC taking a small distribution fee (much less than what studios would have charged). As for exhibitors, many feel it’s a generous deal, noting that Marvel movies receive roughly 65% of box office profits.”

How much is The Eras Tour movie expected to earn?

Fans were quick to snag tickets to showings following Swift’s announcement. The Eras Tour concert film has already collected $100 million in advance ticket sales, setting a precedent for what’s to come opening weekend. In an early September press release, AMC Theaters announced Swift broke the record for single-day advance sales, earning $26 million in tickets sold. The previous record was held by Spider-Man: No Way Home , which sold $16.9 million in a single day. According to The New York Times , the concert film is on track to make around $125 million opening weekend in the United States alone. Swift is expected to “collect an additional $60 million overseas — at a minimum — over the weekend.”

While the fervor of the Swifties will carry the movie to unprecedented heights, the pop star did receive an interim agreement from SAG-AFTRA, which is still on strike, to promote the film. Swift is a member of the SAG-AFTRA union and was granted the agreement because it was produced in compliance with the union’s strike rules.

How do the early projection numbers for The Eras Tour movie compare to other concert films?

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film is already on track to become a global phenomenon. Her advance ticket sales have outgrossed Justin Bieber’s Never Say Never film, which brought in $99 million. This makes it the second highest-grossing concert film ever even before opening, just behind Michael Jackson’s This is It , which grossed over $380 million (adjusted for inflation). At the premiere on Wednesday, Swift announced that the film would be opening a day early in North America due to the demand, which will only increase the size of the opening weekend haul. The film be playing in theaters for at least four weeks, and there’s no telling just how long the film will continue to play given the Swifties’ hunger for any Swift content.

Where might this movie fall in this year’s box office rankings?

After a pandemic-induced decline, audiences are returning to the movies in droves, especially when some movies as advertised as a mass cultural event not to be missed. Last year saw mega-hits like the Tom Cruise-led Top Gun: Maverick and James Cameron’s return to Pandora with the Avatar sequel , the former grossing over $1.5 billion worldwide and the latter becoming the third highest grossing movie of all-time with a global worldwide haul of $2.3 billion.

This year has seen a few releases find major success at the box office, including the cultural phenomenon Barbie —which currently claims the title of the highest-grossing movie of 2023, raking in over $1.4 billion globally . The No. 2 spot is owned by The Super Mario Bros. Movie , with a worldwide gross totaling over $1.3 billion . Those are high targets to compete with, but based on current projections, the Eras Tour should rank around no. 20 in the 2023 global box office after opening weekend alone—and it's sure to climb higher from there.

Taylor Swift's"Eras Tour" concert movie shatters box-office records

By Megan Cerullo

Updated on: October 16, 2023 / 11:32 AM EDT / MoneyWatch

The movie version of Taylor Swift's hit "Eras Tour" concert appeared on big screens this weekend, shattering box-office records.

"Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour," which debuted Thursday at theaters across the U.S., earned an estimated $96 million domestically over its opening weekend. That makes it the most commercially successful concert film of all time, according to Comscore, which cited data from AMC Theatres. It beat out "Justin Bieber: Never Say Never," a 2010 film that grossed more than $73 million at the domestic box office.

The Swift movie had raked in $100 million in advance ticket sales across the world, AMC Theatres said  earlier this month. It also shattered AMC's U.S. record for the highest ticket-sales revenue in a single day in under 24 hours, the company said.

"Clearly we are going to be looking at an astronomical number," Comscore senior media analyst Paul Dergarabedian told CBS MoneyWatch.

Swift relief for a suffering industry

The concert film could help revive the movie-going experience at a crucial time for the industry as the rise of at-home streaming has thrashed ticket sales and called into question the viability of the movie theater format in the digital age.

Swift's movie could dismantle the pandemic-era notion that at-home streaming would make the movie theater experience obsolete.

"Movie theaters were counted out when the pandemic hit and a lot of people thought streaming would take over and the movie theater experience would disappear," Dergarabedian said. "The Swift concert film is so welcome by the movie theater industry on so many levels, because it creates a very positive image for them."

The Swift film is also expected to drum up interest in upcoming movie releases that might not otherwise draw a lot of attention or generate buzz. Swift fans who go to theaters for "Eras" will lay eyes on posters for other films and view trailers from their seats just before they start singing in unison to Swift's greatest hits.

"There is a halo effect on upcoming movies, so it's also good for studios that have films coming out in weeks and months ahead," Dergarabedian said.

It could also more generally spur interest in the movie-going experience.

"It is showing that theaters have more to bring to movie audiences than just movies in a theater," said Stan Ruszkowski, president of the Boxoffice company, a provider of film industry data. "It's a place where you share an experience and watching a concert in a theater is much more fun than watching it on a couch at home on your own."

Repeat visitors?

Alicia Reese, a vice president and entertainment analyst for Wedbush Securities, estimated that the "Eras" film could gross anywhere from $100 million to $400 million in its opening weekend.

"There are no comparisons. It's unprecedented, so it's really hard to estimate," she told CBS MoneyWatch. "The reason for that is one, because she has such a massive built-in fan base, and two, because it's hard to estimate the number of repeat visitors who bought presale tickets for opening weekend who are going to go back the next three to four weekends."

The "Eras" film, part of the "event cinema" genre, is expected to draw crowds who don't usually  turn up at movie theaters.

"There's going to be a whole new group of people who come to the theater who haven't been in an awfully long time and will enjoy communal experience in a way they haven't before," said Ray Nutt, CEO of Fathom Events, a distributer of event cinema content. "A lot of times you are told to be quiet and turn your phone off. This time you'll have people dancing in the aisles singing along. It will be a great thing for event cinema."

Gap to fill as a result of Hollywood strikes

Music and movie industry executives will be keeping a close eye on the film's performance, and depending on its success, will seek to replicate the format many times over.

A recent writer's strike , and ongoing actor's strike have halted production and could lead to a gap in new television and movie releases next summer.

"Studios and theaters will look to alternative content to do that," Reese said.

That could include concert movies or recorded comedy shows, which typically debut on streaming platforms like HBO and Netflix.

"But why not movie theaters? They are definitely a possibility," Reese said.

‘Taylor Swift: Eras Tour' Concert Film Crosses $100 Million In Advance Sales Globally

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert film had sold more than $100 million in advance tickets globally as of today, according to AMC Theatres Distribution and AMC Entertainment as the film is set to open at close to 8,500 theatres across 100 countries in a week.

Audience demand "has been incredible" across the U.S., AMC said, "from the largest cities to the smallest towns," dominating large screen formats. The Sam Wrench-directed movie of the blockbuster tour opens October 13 at 6 p.m. local time.  AMC  has said that the most anticipated movie on the  fall theatrical release calendar  will be holding a world premiere event October 11 in Los Angeles. Deadline had reported in late Sept. that  Eras Tou r hit tracking with a $100M-$125M opening-weekend outlook.

The tsunami of a film that has broken the record for concert film ticket sales was announced August 31. It gave a massive boost to exhibition at a time when Hollywood strikes were forcing release schedule changes. The WGA has settled but the actors are still on strike and although talks are ongoing it's not clear when SAG-AFTRA and the AMPTP will reach a settlement. The box office has struggled without actors out promoting their films.

Eras Tour received a SAG-AFTRA interim agreement  so that the 12-time Grammy winner can promote it. Swift is on a break from her Eras Tour and won't resume live shows until November 9 in Buenos Aires.

Concert films look to be making a comeback at the box office. Renaissance: A Film by Beyoncé  is set to debut Dec. 1, also distributed by AMC.

Recently an older film got some love as The  Talking Heads reunion out of TIFF  for A24's 40th anniversary of  Stop Making Sense  minted more than $640,000 at 165 Imax locations, making it the  biggest live event ever for the large-format exhibitor . The Jonathan Demme film passed $1 million last weekend.

Taylor Swift's Eras Tour Movie Passes $100 Million In Pre-Sales

The movie will play in more than 8,500 theaters in 100+ countries worldwide.

By Eddie Makuch on October 6, 2023 at 6:56AM PDT

Taylor Swift's Eras Tour concert film has surpassed $100 million in global advance ticket sales, distributor AMC Theatres has announced. This covers pre-sales at movie theaters around the world, including AMC and others.

The movie releases on October 13 to coincide with Swift's favorite number. In total, it'll play at more than 8,500 theaters globally in 100+ countries, according to Variety .

AMC did not say how the $100 million figure breaks down between North America and the rest of the world. In North America, Variety reports that only five movies in 2023 have surpassed $100 million for their opening weekends, including Barbie ($162 million), The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($146 million), Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse ($120 million), Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 ($118 million), and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania ($106 million).

The Eras Tour movie is probably expected to be very front-loaded in terms of box-office performance, including pre-sales, as her fans are known to be extreme when it comes to being fast and first. Her fans, known as Swifties, are also extremely passionate and could see the film a number of times, which would help pump up the box office numbers in October and beyond.

Swift's shadow looms large, as Blumhouse changed the release date for its new Exorcist movie-- read our review of The Exorcist: Believer --to get out of the way of the Eras Tour movie. It was scheduled to debut on the appropriately spooky date of Friday, October 13, but Blumhouse shifted it up a week to get out of Swift's way. Producer Jason Blum said he is terrified of Taylor Swift.

The film is a movie version of Swift's ongoing Eras Tour, which is poised to be one of the most lucrative tours in music history. Swift has more dates across America in October and November, before she goes to South America later in November and then to Japan and Australia in February 2024. After that, the tour heads to Singapore, France, Sweden, Portugal, Spain, London, Ireland, the Netherlands, Italy, Germany, Poland, and Austria, before wrapping up in Canada in November 2024.

Taylor Swift is one of the biggest names in the music industry. Her 2022 album Midnights marked the tenth entry into her impressive discography and kickstarted the beginning of her Eras tour in March 2023. While on tour across the United States and Mexico, the 12-time Grammy winner pleasantly surprised fans on August 31 with an announcement of the Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour concert movie. Tickets went on sale (and immediately sold out) that same day.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour movie is clearly the hottest event of this fall season. Here is everything you need to know about it movie before heading to the theater.

What to know about Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour (concert movie)

The Eras tour takes audiences on a captivating musical journey spanning all of Taylor Swift’s unique "eras", paying homage to each of her albums. These albums are 2006's Taylor Swift, Fearless in 2008, 2010's Speak Now, Red in 2012, 1989 in 2014, 2017's Reputation, Lover in 2019, 2020's Folkmore and Evermore, and Midnights in 2022. You can expect to witness her perform some of the most celebrated songs within her catalogue including "Love Story", "Blank Space", and "Anti-Hero."

The movie offers audiences the opportunity to experience the wildly anticipated concert they might not have had the chance to see in person. Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour movie filmed the initial trio of performances at SoFi Stadium in early August. As shown in the concert movie, this huge Los Angeles venue drew an astounding crowd of nearly half a million fans.

As the official concert movie for her Eras Tour, Taylor Swift wants fans to have an authentic concert experience when watching the movie in theaters. When she initially announced it on X, Taylor suggested  that fans should dress up in their best Eras attire, wear friendship bracelets and participate in singing and dancing, just like they would at a live show: "The Eras Tour has been the most meaningful, electric experience of my life so far and I’m overjoyed to tell you that it’ll be coming to the big screen soon.  Starting Oct 13th you’ll be able to experience the concert film in theaters in North America! Tickets are on sale now at http:// taylor.lnk.to/TSTheErasTourF ilm … . Eras attire, friendship bracelets, singing and dancing encouraged. 1, 2, 3 LGB!!!! (iykyk)"

Where can I watch Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour?

If you are in the united states:.

AMC theaters have entered into an exclusive agreement with Swift, allowing only their locations in the United States to screen The Eras Tour movie starting October 13. Canadian theaters will screen the movie as well.

Within minutes of theater tickets for Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour being released, the AMC app crashed with fans attempting to buy advance tickets for the movie. This marks the second instance this year where Swifties caused a major website to malfunction, with the first being during the sale for the actual Eras Tour itself. AMC is currently promoting exciting additions for your cinematic experience including Eras Tour-themed popcorn buckets for $14.99+tax and drink cups for $11.99+tax. Exclusive cardigans have, unfortunately, still not been announced.

If you are outside of the United States:

On Tuesday 26th September, 2023, tickets for the official Eras tour concert movie were announced in over 100 countries around the world. Taylor Swift made the announcement on Instagram, sharing that the film will be in theaters in those countries from October 13, 2023.

"The tour isn’t the only thing we’re taking worldwide…….. 🌎 Been so excited to tell you all that The Eras Tour concert film is now officially coming to theaters WORLDWIDE on Oct 13! Tickets available now at www.TSTheErasTourFilm.com or on your local theaters website!"

Tickets were available immediately after the Instagram post went live. AMC have struck a deal with sub-distribution partners for more than 7,500 movie theatres in order to show the film in theaters around the world. Across Europe, the concert movie will be playing at Odeon theaters. Odeon also announced a special pricing for the event:

"In a nod to Taylor Swift’s 1989 album and her favourite number, 13, tickets in the UK and Ireland will be priced at £19.89 / €19.89 for adults and £13.13 / €13.13 for children."

Will The Eras Tour be on Netflix?

Despite the concert movie's cinematic release on October 13, there has been no announcement about where to stream Taylor Swift: The Era Tour online. Until further notice, the movie is available exclusively in theaters. However, given the record-breaking demand for tickets, it is very likely fans will be able to watch The Eras Tour on streaming services after its theatrical run ends.

You can choose to get notified by JustWatch when a streaming release date is announced by heading to Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour and hitting the notification bell.

How long is Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour?

While an Eras Tour concert typically lasts over three hours on average, the official length of the concert movie is 2 hours and 40 minutes. This makes it much longer than previous Taylor Swift concert movies, such as Taylor Swift: Reputation Stadium Tour which is 2 hours and 5 mins.

Who is the director of Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour?

Grammy-nominated Sam Wrench is the director of the upcoming concert movie. He earned the coveted nomination for directing Billie Eilish Live At The O2 in 2023. Wrench is best known for his ability in capturing the electrifying essence of a live music event, having also worked on  Lizzo: Live in Concert and BTS: Permission to Dance on Stage - LA . He boasts an impressive resume filled with projects from some of the biggest names in the industry including Mary J. Blige, The Weeknd, Justin Bieber and Ariana Grande.

What records did Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour break?

Taylor Swift just keeps adding to her impressive list of record-breaking achievements. The Eras Tour movie shattered the record for the most money made from advance ticket sales in a single day at AMC Theaters, raking in a whopping $26 million. This surpasses the previous record-holder, 2021's  Spider-Man: No Way Home , by $10 million. Fans achieved this record-breaking feat in just three hours, beating  Avengers: Endgame 's record for the most tickets sold within the first 24 hours.

The Eras Tour movie is expected to have an incredible opening weekend, with a projected range of $100-125 million. The top five movies for the year's opening weekends include Barbie , The Super Mario Bros. Movie , Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse , Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 3 and Ant-Man and the Wasp: Quantumania . These range between between $162 million to $106 million, which means the upcoming concert movie has the potential to have one of the best opening weekends of 2023.

Furthermore, the sudden announcement of the movie's release date caused other titles to change their release dates. The Exorcist: Believer , originally slated for the same day, will now premiere a week earlier. Producer Jason Blum playfully tweeted, "Look what you made me do. The Exorcist: Believer moves to 10/6/23.”

What are the other Taylor Swift concert movies?

For those who simply cannot calm down before the release of the movie, there have been a number of projects featuring exclusive access to Swift’s concerts that are available to watch right now. These include The 1989 World Tour Live, which was released on Apple Music in 2015, and 2018’s Taylor Swift: Reputation Stadium Tour which is available to stream on Netflix. There were also DVD releases of Taylor Swift: Journey to Fearless in 2010 and Speak Now World Tour – Live the following year.

Swifties alike must ultimately tolerate this Cruel wait with their Gorgeous Style they know Belongs to them. On the Bejeweled side, there are only a few weeks left before they are united by the greatest Love Story on the big screen: Taylor Swift with her Swifties. They are undeniably Ready For It.

Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour will be released in theaters on October 13, 2023.

Taylor Swift

After smashing records from coast-to-coast with her Eras Tour this summer, Taylor Swift has done it again with her Eras Tour movie. According to a press release from AMC Theatres on Friday morning (Sept. 1), Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour has broken all existing records for single-day advance ticket sales revenue at the chain with $26 million in the first 24 hours of on-sale.

How Taylor Swift Filmed Her ‘Eras Tour’ Movie in the Midst of the Hollywood Strike

Trending on billboard.

The movie will also screen in IMAX and Dolby Cinema at AMC, as well as in other premium large formats for the standard up-charge fees, which varies by format and theatre. AMC anticipated the rush of interest in the film from Swifties, upgrading its website and ticketing engines to handle what was expected to be five times more than the largest volume they’d ever experienced before. Even so, the AMC app reportedly crashed on Thursday, with fans encouraged to visit their local AMC in person due to the high volume of traffic that made online reservations unavailable at points.

In addition to hosting and distributing the film, AMC has also teamed with several other movie operators in the U.S., Canada and Mexico for screenings, including with  Cinemark  (U.S.), Cineplex (Canada) and Cinepolis (Mexico).

Taylor Swift’s ‘Poets’ Arrives With a Promotional Blitz (and a Second LP)

The pop superstar’s latest album was preceded by a satellite radio channel, a word game, a return to TikTok and an actual library. For her fans, more is always welcome.

Taylor Swift was already the most ubiquitous pop star in the galaxy, her presence dominating the music charts, the concert calendar, the Super Bowl, the Grammys.

Then it came time for her to promote a new album.

In the days leading up to the release of “The Tortured Poets Department” on Friday, Swift became all but inescapable, online and seemingly everywhere else. Her lyrics were the basis for an Apple Music word game . A Spotify-sponsored, Swift-branded “ library installation ,” in muted pink and gray, popped up in a shopping complex in Los Angeles. In Chicago, a QR code painted on a brick wall directed fans to another Easter egg on YouTube. Videos on Swift’s social media accounts, showing antique typewriters and globes with pins, were dissected for clues about her music. SiriusXM added a Swift radio station; of course it’s called Channel 13 (Taylor’s Version).

About the only thing Swift didn’t do was an interview with a journalist.

At this stage in Swift’s career, an album release is more than just a moment to sell music; it’s all but a given that “The Tortured Poets Department” will open with gigantic sales numbers, many of them for “ghost white,” “phantom clear” and other collector-ready vinyl variants . More than that, the album’s arrival is a test of the celebrity-industrial complex overall, with tech platforms and media outlets racing to capture whatever piece of the fan frenzy they can get.

Threads, the newish social media platform from Meta, primed Swifties for their idol’s arrival there, and offered fans who shared Swift’s first Threads post a custom badge. Swift stunned the music industry last week by breaking ranks with her record label, Universal, and returning her music to TikTok, which Universal and other industry groups have said pays far too little in royalties. Overnight, TikTok unveiled “The Ultimate Taylor Swift In-App Experience,” offering fans digital goodies like a “Tortured Poets-inspired animation” on their feed.

Before the album’s release on Friday, Swift revealed that a music video — for “Fortnight,” the first single, featuring Post Malone — would arrive on Friday at 8 p.m. Eastern time. At 2 a.m., she had another surprise: 15 more songs. “I’d written so much tortured poetry in the past 2 years and wanted to share it all with you,” she wrote in a social media post , bringing “The Anthology” edition of the album to 31 tracks.

“The Tortured Poets Department,” which Swift, 34, announced in a Grammy acceptance speech in February — she had the Instagram post ready to go — lands as Swift’s profile continues to rise to ever-higher levels of cultural saturation.

Her Eras Tour , begun last year, has been a global phenomenon, crashing Ticketmaster and lifting local economies ; by some estimates, it might bring in as much as $2 billion in ticket sales — by far a new record — before it ends later this year. Swift’s romance with the Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce has been breathlessly tracked from its first flirtations last summer to their smooch on the Super Bowl field in February. The mere thought that Swift might endorse a presidential candidate this year sent conspiracy-minded politicos reeling .

“The Tortured Poets Department” — don’t even ask about the missing apostrophe — arrived accompanied by a poem written by Stevie Nicks that begins, “He was in love with her/Or at least she thought so.” That establishes what many fans correctly anticipated as the album’s theme of heartbreak and relationship rot, Swift’s signature topic. “I love you/It’s ruining my life,” she sings on “Fortnight.”

Fans were especially primed for the fifth track, “So Long, London,” given that (1) Swift has said she often sequences her most vulnerable and emotionally intense songs fifth on an LP, and (2) the title suggested it may be about Joe Alwyn, the English actor who was Swift’s boyfriend for about six years, reportedly until early 2023 . Indeed, “So Long” is an epic breakup tune, with lines like “You left me at the house by the heath” and “I’m pissed off you let me give you all that youth for free.” Tracks from the album leaked on Wednesday, and fans have also interpreted some songs as being about Matty Healy , the frontman of the band the 1975, whom Swift was briefly linked to last year.

The album’s title song starts with a classic Swift detail of a memento from a lost love: “You left your typewriter at my apartment/Straight from the tortured poets department.” It also name-drops Dylan Thomas, Patti Smith and, somewhat surprisingly given that company, Charlie Puth, the singer-songwriter who crooned the hook on Wiz Khalifa’s “See You Again,” a No. 1 hit in 2015. (Swift has praised Wiz Khalifa and that song in the past.)

Other big moments include “Florida!!!,” featuring Florence Welch of Florence + the Machine, in which Swift declares — after seven big percussive bangs — that the state “is one hell of a drug.” Jack Antonoff and Aaron Dessner, the producers and songwriters who have been Swift’s primary collaborators in recent years, both worked on “Tortured Poets,” bringing their signature mix of moody, pulsating electronic tracks and delicate acoustic moments, like a bare piano on “Loml” (as in “love of my life”).

As the ninth LP Swift has released in five years, “Tortured Poets” is the latest entry in a remarkable creative streak. That includes five new studio albums and four rerecordings of her old music — each of which sailed to No. 1. When Swift played SoFi Stadium near Los Angeles in August, she spoke from the stage about her recording spurt, saying that the forced break from touring during the Covid-19 pandemic had spurred her to connect with fans by releasing more music.

“And so I decided, in order to keep that connection going,” she said , “if I couldn’t play live shows with you, I was going to make and release as many albums as humanly possible.”

That was two albums ago.

Taylor Swift's impact on the US economy started to become clear last year during the middle of her incredibly popular Era's Tour , and the impact has spilled over to the bottom line for individual companies.

Swift's 60-show tour across the US generated a record $1.04 billion in sales, with a total 4.3 million tickets sold at an average price of $238.95. And now fans are listening to today's release of her new album, "The Tortured Poets Department.

The knock-on effect of that tour led to a surge in hotel bookings in certain cities, which even caught the attention of the Federal Reserve .

Individual companies are starting to take notice too, with several mentioning Swift on Wall Street earnings calls in recent months to help explain the underlying strength of their business performance.

"All of that increase in AMC's Revenue and EBITDA is attributable to our having shown these two movies in our theatres in the U.S. and internationally," Aron said.

Taylor Swift The Eras Tour

Lloyds Bank is aiming to help Taylor Swift fans in the UK avoid a cruel summer. The bank has issued an “urgent warning” over ticket scams for the upcoming UK leg of the superstar’s Eras Tour, finding that Swifties are being “targeted by a wave of concert ticket scams flooding social media.”

The institution further estimates that industry-wide across the UK there are likely to have been at least 3,000 victims since tickets went on sale, with over £1 million ($1.25 million) lost to fraudsters so far.

More than 90% of reported cases start with fake ads or posts on Facebook, which includes Facebook Marketplace, according to Lloyds, with dozens of unofficial groups set up specifically for people looking to buy and sell tickets for Taylor Swift concerts.

Lloyds warned, “With all UK dates now sold out, many more fans are likely to fall victim to ticket scams in the coming weeks and months, both leading up to the tour and once the concerts begin in June.”

In its research, Lloyds found that the number of reported scam cases relating to concert tickets more than doubled last summer compared to the same period a year earlier (up by 158%). Among the other major artists most commonly targeted last summer were Coldplay, Harry Styles and Beyonce.

Liz Ziegler, Fraud Prevention Director, Lloyds Bank, said, “For her legion of dedicated Swifties, the excitement is building ahead of Taylor’s Eras Tour finally touching down in the UK this summer. However, cruel fraudsters have wasted no time in targeting her most loyal fans as they rush to pick up tickets for her must-see concerts. It’s easy to let our emotions get the better of us when we find out our favorite artist is going to be performing live, but it’s important not to let those feelings cloud our judgement when trying to get hold of tickets.”

Ziegler suggested, “Buying directly from reputable, authorized platforms is the only way to guarantee you’re paying for a genuine ticket. Even then, always pay by debit or credit card for the greatest protection. If you’re being asked to pay by bank transfer, particularly from a seller you’ve found on social media, that should immediately set alarm bells ringing.”
