30 Epic Graduation Trip Ideas (2024 USA & International)

30 graduation trip ideas

Whether you have a senior in high school or college, graduation is something to be celebrated! Some may want a party, a car, or help with their college tuition, but many would love to celebrate this accomplishment with a dream trip. As the school year begins its rapid roll toward the inevitable end of an era, it is time to start thinking about graduation trip ideas.

A grad trip serves the double purpose of celebrating the completion of this phase of schooling and an enticement for those fledglings to return to the nest from time to time. We put together a list of options for my high school senior to choose from and for those of you looking for high school graduation trip ideas, college graduation trip ideas, or senior trip ideas, I have some great suggestions for you!

The thing to consider though when planning a high school or college graduation trip is that while you may want it to be a bucket list experience or a trip of a lifetime; if you really want to take a trip right after graduation in May or June, you need to keep the season in mind.

Summer is the high season for family travel, which means crowds, peak pricing, and a need for advance planning. If you can travel in early to mid-June, you can avoid the high peak that starts in early July as European schools let out for the summer.

It is also an ideal time to visit destinations in the Northern Hemisphere, but Southern Hemisphere destinations vary in attractiveness from June-August as they experience their winter months. So forget the idea of seeing penguins in Antarctica and it may not be ideal for hiking in Patagonia or New Zealand either unless you want to wait for Christmas break. But there are still so many fantastic destinations to choose from.

15 U.S. Graduation Trip Ideas

Even if you have traveled extensively in the United States, there are still so many destinations and experiences that can make a graduation trip truly special. Here are a few that particularly shine in June.

lighting torch at sunset on Black Rock on Maui

The exotic allure of the Aloha State may be the perfect balm after a stressful senior year. The Big Island of Hawaii is the only place in the United States to see a live volcano, while Maui is the perfect place for adventure activities like sunrise cycling down a volcanic crater or driving the road to Hana.

Just keep in mind that June through November is technically hurricane season, although big storms are rare. We visited in late June and had pretty great weather, with just some rainstorms that delivered beautiful rainbows. Find out how much a family trip to Hawaii costs .

Bear in river

Summer is the best time to visit Alaska. An Alaskan cruise is definitely a great way to see the most popular ports in Alaska, but to get a real sense of this vast and rugged state, you need to spend some time on land too (and not just on excursions .) If planning a trip to Alaska feels too daunting, you can join one of Austin Adventures’ group family trips, like the one to Kenai Fjords and Peninsula .

You can experience calving glaciers, search for wildlife, and experience the brilliance of the Midnight Sun in the Last Frontier.

Yosemite National Park, California

Women with arms up overlooking view in Yosemite National Park

Yosemite National Park can get crazily crowded in the summer, but if you go early enough in June, you can get there before the worst of the crowds and when the water is still strong, resulting in beautiful, powerful waterfalls. (See this guide to easy hikes in Yosemite .)

Listen to our podcast episode on Yosemite National Park for ideas on the best places to stay, hikes, and other things to do in Yosemite .

Glacier National Park, Montana

Boat on Lake McDonald in Glacier National Park

Glacier National Park is one of the most popular destinations in the U.S. National Parks system and getting a reservation in the summer can be challenging. But head to Glacier Country in early summer to beat the crowds and get better rates. Just keep in mind that there will still be snow on the ground, and it is likely that parts of the Going-to-the-Sun road that connect the parts of the park will still be closed until sometime in July, although I was there in mid-June last year and it was open.

But there is still plenty of hiking and wildlife viewing to enjoy (plus a chance to see glaciers!). After a few days in the park, you can enjoy some fun adventures near Glacier or relax at Flathead Lake Lodge, an all-inclusive dude ranch , or spend time exploring more of Western Montana .

Walt Disney World, Florida

Magic Kingdom castle from across the lake

From weddings to birthdays, every special occasion is a good fit for a trip to Disney for lovers of magic and the mouse. It might be the perfect time to splurge on a VIP tour to make the trip extra special.

While there are plenty of rides at Disney that teens love, thrill-seekers will also like adding on a few days at Universal or some of the water parks , especially for those hot June days. And when it rains, try some of these nearby Orlando attractions .

Grand Canyon, Arizona

There are two huge downsides to visiting the Grand Canyon in the summer — the crowds and the heat. But, if you go in June it is a little more manageable, especially if you go to the less-visited North Rim, which doesn’t even open until mid-May.

To make the trip extra special, and thrilling, you can arrange for helicopter flights over the canyon, mule rides or hikes into the canyon, or multi-day float trips along the Colorado River. You can also make this part of an epic southwest road trip .

New York, New York

Bright lights, big city — if your graduate has never visited the Big Apple, a visit to New York City can make a great graduation trip. Get tickets for the must-see Broadway show. Visit museums. Take a food tour. Go shopping. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge. The possibilities are endless in the city that never sleeps.

Make sure you fit in some of the newer attractions like Hudson Yards, Summit at One Vanderbilt, Little Island @ Pier 55, the 9/11 Memorial, the Highline, or even try the new Edge NYC Skydeck. Teens also love Instagramable food stops like rainbow bagels, taiyakis, specialty cupcakes, crazy milkshakes, and more.

Las Vegas, Nevada

Las Vegas sign with city skyline behind

College grads may enjoy exercising some of their new liberties in Las Vegas, but even high school graduates can enjoy under-21 attractions. The hotels along Vegas’ famous Strip are a spectacle in and of itself. Add to that one-of-a-kind entertainment, celebrity chef-owned restaurants, and thrills like the X-Scream ride at the Stratosphere Hotel, FlyOver Las Vegas , or the SkyJump off the Stratosphere Tower.

Of course outside of Las Vegas, you can also go hiking in Red Rock Canyon, visit Hoover Dam, or drive a luxury sports car or race car.

California Coast

Tips for driving Highway One on the California Coast

Rent a convertible and take your grad on a classic U.S. road trip down the California coast . Start off with a few days in San Francisco , then head down to Monterey and Carmel-by-the-Sea . Next, take your time exploring the beautiful coastline along Highway 1 down to Big Sur.

On the central coast, you can ride on the sand dunes, zip line through a winery, and enjoy all the small beach towns on your way to Los Angeles . Finish off with surf lessons in Huntington Beach, a tour of Universal Studios, or a day at Disneyland. If you have a college grad you can even add on a few days in Sonoma or Paso Robles for wine tasting.

Puerto Rico

Craving an island vacation? You don’t need a passport to visit Puerto Rico. There you can enjoy gorgeous beaches, the El Yunque rainforest, outdoor adventures, and soak up the history in Old San Juan.

In Vieques and elsewhere on the island, you can even experience the magic of bioluminescence with a nighttime kayaking excursion.

Utah’s Mighty 5 National Parks

Delicate arch in Arches National Park (from Canva)

Things are starting to heat up in the southwest in June, but you can still fit in an epic trip to all five of Utah’s national parks — Arches, Zion, Bryce, Canyonlands, and Capitol Reef National Parks. Or, if you really enjoy hiking and getting off the beaten path, focus on just a couple of the parks. If you are visiting two parks or more, be sure to invest in the National Parks Pass .

Start off in Salt Lake City and then head to Moab to explore Arches and Canyonlands. Next, head over to Capitol Reef and Bryce. Finish up in St. George and Zion National Park. You can then fly out of Las Vegas or loop back up to Salt Lake City. Be sure to listen to this podcast for some great tips on off-the-beaten-path stops on a Southwest Grand Circle road trip or read my friend Lesli’s Utah National Parks road trip itinerary .

Maine Windjammer Cruise

Schooner Heritage on the water

Large ship cruising may not be your cup of tea, but there are other small ship possibilities available. If your student loves sailing, then a trip aboard one of the Maine Windjammer cruises will be right up their alley. Enjoy gourmet meals and lobster bakes on the beach. Assist the crew and enjoy watching the scenic coastline glide by. Explore the rugged coastline and small seaside towns of the Maine coast .

For a real splurge, book cabins with your friends and family for a group vacation on the sea. Pair it up with a Coastal Maine road trip or a fun glamping stay near Bar Harbor and Acadia National Park .

Key West, Florida

Florida Keys Overseas Highway

One of my favorite east coast road trips is along the Overseas Highway in the Florida Keys . This scenic trip is great for graduates that love water sports — like windsurfing, snorkeling, kayaking, and scuba diving.

It is also a perfect spot for future marine biologists to visit a sea turtle hospital, explore marine preserves, study dolphins, and enjoy nature up close. Of course, all the key lime pie is also a great perk!

New Orleans, Louisiana

Balconies in the French Quarter New Orleans

Your foodie teen will enjoy a trip to the Big Easy for a food and music extravaganza. Enjoy food tours, cooking classes, and everything from celebrity-chef restaurants to the best of diners, drive-ins, and dives.

Then soak in the culture with history tours (or ghost tours), a visit to Mardi Gras World, and plenty of live jazz music. If you have time to get out of town, be sure to try an airboat tour!

Black Hills, South Dakota

Mount Rushmore

There are tons of ways for teens and young adults to seek adventure in the Black Hills . You can bike along the Mickelson Trail, one of the old rail trails that runs for 108.8 miles from Edgemont to Deadwood. Don’t worry, you don’t need to bike the whole thing. Instead, you can rent bikes and arrange for shuttle pick-ups and drop-offs to only bike as far as you choose. There is also go rock climbing, horseback riding, and enjoy amazing wildlife viewing in Custer State Park.

Be sure to leave extra days for side ventures to Devil’s Tower in Wyoming and the stunning Badlands National Park . And even if they haven’t had enough of learning for a while, make sure to visit Mount Rushmore, Crazy Horse Memorial, and the Minuteman Missile Silo Historic Site.

15 International Graduation Trip Ideas

There are so many bucket list destinations that are great places to visit in June for a graduation trip. Here are a few options for adventure seekers, outdoor lovers, cultural explorers, and wildlife lovers.

Kirkjufell and Kirkjufellsness

June is my absolute favorite time to visit Iceland, especially if you can be there for the Summer Solstice. Just be aware that many businesses and attractions are closed on June 17th for Iceland Independence Day. The weather is starting to warm up and you have full days of sunlight to explore.

Iceland is the perfect spot for outdoor adventurers. Spend a few days on the gorgeous South Coast chasing waterfalls, visiting black sand beaches, hiking on glaciers, and sailing between the icebergs. To get away from the crowds, spend a few days up in the rugged and remote West Fjords . Find out how much a trip to Iceland costs and read my Iceland travel tips .

family in Shinsekai

It took us until my daughter was in college to finally get to Japan, but this bucket list destination is perfect for a graduation trip. Immersing yourselves in a new culture is great practice for the new challenges that lie ahead for your grad. While things will be heating up in June and you can expect some rain, your grad will love exploring the food, shopping, and cultural quirkiness that lies side-by-side with ancient shrines and temples.

If you can spend two weeks in Japan , it would be ideal for getting to see Tokyo , Kyoto , and Osaka , with time for a day trip or two as well.

Giants Causeway Northern Ireland

With a drinking age of 18, graduates might enjoy some newfound freedoms in the pubs of Ireland — after all, what better place to soak in the Irish culture? Start off in Dublin , and then head off to Northern Ireland and the Coastal Causeway .

In the Republic of Ireland, don’t miss the Cliffs of Moher and a drive along the Wild Atlantic Way. The town of Killarney and the Dingle Peninsula are some of my favorite spots in Ireland. Find out how much a trip to Ireland costs and tips for traveling to Ireland .

Azores, Portugal

waterfall at Ribeira dos Caldeiroes

Natural beauty abounds in the Azores , the archipelago of Portuguese islands in the Atlantic. In June, big hydrangea blooms decorate the island in a mix of pinks, purples, and blues. This is a perfect setting for outdoor lovers, particularly on the island of Pico, home to the Mount Pico volcano. For adventure seekers, you can go coasteering, canyoning, hiking, surfing, and more on the largest island of São Miguel .

Finish up with a few days on the mainland enjoying the colorful festivals taking place in Lisbon or Porto . The Azores are a great destination for the grad that likes to do something different than everyone else and its blend of the best of Hawaii, Iceland, and Ireland make it truly unique.

Path across water to Naxos town

A week or two spent island hopping in the Cyclades is a perfect way to chill out after the exhaustion of final exams. Mid-June through mid-July is the perfect time to visit. The islands of Santorini and Mykonos are jammed in the summer, especially once the cruise ships start coming to port, but you can still avoid crowds on smaller islands like Naxos or spread out on Crete . The weather is warm but not scorching hot, and the daytime winds are not as strong as later in the summer.

Start off in Mykonos or Santorini for an introduction to the Greek Islands’ party scene, and then spend some time at some of the quieter islands, like Naxos, Paros, Crete, or some of the off-the-beaten-track islands. Find out how much a trip to Greece costs or check out our 10-day Greece itinerary.

Tuscan hillside

Like much of Europe, Italy is beautiful in early June, before the heat and tourists descend. You will want to hit the highlights in Rome and Florence , but then take some time to relax and enjoy the Tuscan countryside where you can bike through vineyards and swim in thermal pools.

You may even be able to arrange to test drive a Ferrari or sample the culinary delights in Bologna or Parma on your way to Venice . Finish up with some hiking in the Italian Dolomites. In June you are guaranteed sunny days and warm evenings in the mountains, with not too much humidity. After a day of hiking or biking, enjoy the local culinary delicacies over lunch at a mountain rifugio or a slopeside picnic.

If your grad prefers lazing on the beach, skip the gondolas and mountains and head down to the Amalfi Coast or the gorgeous island of Capri . Just make your reservations early and don’t be surprised to be rubbing elbows with newlyweds and retirees.

Dubrovnik, Croatia

History buffs (and Game of Thrones fans) will love the medieval city of Dubrovnik on the Dalmatian Coast. June is the perfect time to explore before the peak summer crowds and cruise ships arrive in July and August.

To escape the crowds, the best way to explore Croatia is by boat. Charter a sailboat and head out on the Adriatic Sea to nearby Lokrum Island or further to Korcula, one of the more charming islands in Croatia. There are also adventure activities for active teens such as biking trips, hiking, and water sports.

Switzerland

Matterhorn behind a blue lake and green fields in Switzerland

Your young adventurer may enjoy hiking in the Swiss Alps after graduation. It can still be rainy in May and early June, or snowy at higher altitudes, so shoot for late June or even early July. There are many routes for hut-to-hut (or hotel-to-hotel) hiking. Or you can settle in near Interlaken and soak in the scenery and outdoor adventures.

Interlaken is home to many extreme sports, including mountaineering, bungee jumping, zorbing, skiing, snowboarding, paragliding, helicopter skydiving, white water rafting, canyoning, ice climbing, rock climbing, trekking, and so much more.

Art lovers will also want to check out the international art show at Art Basel in Basel, Switzerland, which draws top artists from around the world. In Basel, you can also bike to three countries in one day! Bike to France and have a croissant, have a beer and lunch in Germany, and return to Switzerland and float down the river before dinner.

Dad and teen in Paris

The weather in Paris in June is perfect, the cherry blossoms are in bloom, and there are long days of sunshine to explore the city at its most romantic. Of course, summer is also when the tourists descend so it is critical to go in June (the earlier the better) before school lets out for summer in France and the United Kingdom.

Even so, it is important to book early for prime locations (see my guide for renting an apartment in Paris ) and attractions (reservations and/or timed entry tickets are needed for many attractions, including the Louvre and the Eiffel Tower.)

It is also a city where you can give your teen a little independence to practice language skills and prepare to go out on their own. Indulge your graduate’s interests in art, history, or food with private tours and cooking classes. Find out how much a trip to Paris costs , check out our 5-day Paris itinerary , and download our Paris trip planning checklist .

South Africa

Zebras on savannah in Tanzania (from Canva)

June to August is winter in South Africa, but it is also the ideal time to book a safari in Kruger or other parks. The game viewing is ideal because the bush is less dense, but the beautiful golden grasses capture the light and provide excellent photo opportunities. Plus, the dry weather typically means few to no mosquitos!

While June is typically the rainy season in Cape Town, it has a little bit of everything, which makes it the perfect destination for a graduation trip. The city is surrounded by beaches and mountains, with plenty of opportunities for adventure from cage-diving with sharks to zip-lining through mountains and forests. Your graduate can also snorkel with seals or go sea kayaking with penguins. There is also the potential to see whales along South Africa’s Whale Coast between June and November.

Serengeti National Park, Tanzania

Watching The Great Migration in Serengeti National Park is an unforgettable experience, and June is a great time to see it. In the Western Corridor area, you can find herds of wildebeest, gazelles, and zebras as they make their way north in search of food, water, and breeding grounds.

Because June falls within Serengeti’s dry season, you’ll find less foliage, making animals easier to spot, as well as fewer mosquitos. The temperature is moderate and pleasant during the day, but chilly for early morning safaris or nights in the safari tents. This is truly a bucket list experience for families.

Great Barrier Reef, Australia

While technically winter, the weather is never too terribly cold in Australia and you will find good deals on flights and hotels. It is also a perfect time to see the Great Barrier Reef. There is very little rain so diving conditions are at their peak — perfect for checking scuba diving off a bucket list.

Beyond the Reef, northern Queensland, the Northern Territory, and northern Western Australia are at their best in June. Remember, the further south you go, the colder it will be.

Palm tree and white sand in Fiji

If a tropical escape is what your student needs to relax, set your sights a bit further than the Caribbean all the way to the South Pacific. It is also technically winter in Fiji in June, but the temps never get too cold and you can just miss the summer rush that starts in July. June is one of the best months to visit Fiji, with ideal weather, countless activity options, cheaper hotel rates, and smaller crowds.

From the rich Fijian culture to the incredible beaches, there are countless reasons why Fiji’s 333 islands are the perfect vacation destination for a graduation trip.

Machu Picchu in Peru

Does your student love to learn about ancient civilizations or archeology? Summer is a great time to visit the ancient Incan city of Machu Picchu. Start your journey in Lima, Peru’s vibrant capital city, or Cusco, a scenic three-hour train ride from Machu Picchu. Just be sure to give yourself time to adjust to the altitude, especially if you are considering hiking in the Sacred Valley. Reservations are also needed at this popular tourist destination.

The Amazon’s dry season starts in June, so you can pair a visit to Machu Picchu with time spent exploring the rainforest or traveling the Amazon by boat.

View of pools and beach at Ritz Carlton Aruba from above

Sitting below the hurricane belt, Aruba, along with its neighboring islands of Bonaire and Curaçao, enjoys a dry season in the summer. Yet since summer in the Caribbean isn’t high on many people’s lists, you can also enjoy lower rates and fewer crowds.

Off-road on this desert island, go horseback riding on the beach, enjoy sunset catamaran sails, and spend some time with flamingoes on this Dutch island.

Don’t Forget Travel Insurance!

Graduation cap and diploma with Allianz Travel insurance website on phone

Once you have booked your dream trip to celebrate your graduate, don’t forget to purchase travel insurance! Travel insurance can protect you in the case of unexpected and unforeseen circumstances that may arise on your trip such as trip cancellation, trip interruption, baggage loss or delay, theft, emergency medical expenses and transportation (this is especially important when traveling out of the country!), travel delays, rental car damage, and more.

Even better, also gift your graduate an annual travel insurance plan that protects their trips all year long. It is the perfect gift for kids that will be flying back and forth to college or young adults just starting out in their career and spending their newfound paid time off traveling.

Before we sent our daughter off to college in Arizona, I made sure she was covered by an AllTrips Premier annual travel insurance plan from Allianz Travel. Allianz Travel has been our trusted travel insurance provider for years and the investment has paid off in multitudes. Not only do I know that her trips to school and back are protected against flight cancellations, travel delays, and lost luggage, but as an inexperienced solo traveler it gives us both peace of mind knowing that she has access to a 24-hour hotline for assistance on all sorts of travel emergencies.

Shop for the Allianz Travel Insurance policy that is right for you!

24 Awesome US Graduation Trip Ideas for Your 2024 Senior

Are you looking for some awesome graduation trip ideas for your senior? I’ve been there and I have a list of ideas that are perfect for your teen!

This year I have a senior in high school. When I started this blogging journey, it was to help families travel more before their kids’ grow up and move out . And now I’m here. My son is about to embark on his college journey and move out, at least for a little while. Which is why I needed some ideas for a graduation trip he won’t forget.

I promised each of my children to take them on fun senior trips. I fully believe travel helps us spend quality time together that we don’t get in our day-to-day lives. Travel removes the responsibilities of home life, school, activities, and obligations. And since I’ve focused on travel with teenagers over the last 10 years, many of our past vacations inspired me to create this list.

As a high school senior (who’s also dual-enrolled to earn his Associate’s Degree) there is a lot of stress and pressure of finishing school, choosing a college, moving away from home, meeting new people, and all that those life changes bring. One last hurrah and a trip of a lifetime is not only a way to celebrate this important time in his life, it’s a great way to have family time before his next big step.

As someone deeply passionate about family travel, I’ve been on this blogging journey to help families make the most of their grad trips. The following fun senior trip ideas cover everything from a group graduation vacation, travel with a senior class, or epic trips for high school graduates with friends or family .

Here’s the deal: Research consistently emphasizes the positive impact of well-planned graduation trips, not just on the graduating senior but on the entire family. Families who’ve followed my suggestions have had some incredible journeys.

Graduation Trips on a Budget

High school graduation trips do not have to break the bank. Depending on the kind of trip your teen wants, finding affordable graduation trips in USA and staying on a small budget can still be a lot of fun.

graduation trip ideas 1 Young adults who want to get away from their everyday lives for a few days will enjoy exploring Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. Located on the big island of Hawaii, this popular park offers hiking trails, sightseeing, lava tubes, and much more. Backpacking is allowed at certain sites within park limits. A trip to Kilauea Iki can take visitors through many of these features in one hike, making it one of our favorite graduation trip ideas for young adults.

1. New York City

I fully believe New York City not only is the ultimate travel experience today, but it is also well within a budget vacation option. It’s been one of our best graduation trips.

Flights to NYC are usually not too expensive, but they do increase as summer approaches. Book a trip immediately after graduation in late May if possible. Keep an eye on Skyscanner for the best flight prices.

What to do:

Places such as Times Square, Central Park, Statue of Liberty , Wall Street, Trinity Church (where the Hamiltons are buried and as seen on National Treasure), The New York Public Library, and Washington Square Park, are free to visit. Or in the case of the Lady Liberty, very reasonable cost.

These are places that your teen will know from TV and Movies. We have always had a great time seeing our favorite places in person. Hit Bedford and Grove to see the Friends building. Wander through Central Park. Search for filming locations of your favorite media and you’ll come up with a list to visit on your own.

Eating in the big city of New York can also be reasonable as well. Just stay away from the touristy section of Times Square when it comes to dining. Your best option is downtown for Chinatown or Little Italy.

Where to stay:

To make it reasonable, stay outside the city and take the subway in. We’ve found charming VRBOs in Jersey City (which isn’t too far from the Statue of Liberty Ferry and is only about 4 stops into the city.

Camping is another excellent choice for traveling on a budget . Your choice of destination is unlimited. If your grad wants to even try out a solo trip, look to one of the state parks near you. That way your teen gets some independence but isn’t too far away for their first time out on their own.

If you don’t want to go all-in on buying new camping gear , you can also consider one of your state parks with cabin accommodations.

3. Rent a Campervan

When my son and I started tossing around ideas for high school senior trip ideas, the one we landed on was renting a campervan to explore the National Parks in California .

We are renting with Escape Campervans , out of San Francisco. Drivers do have to be at least 21 years of age with a valid driver’s license, so this is not the kind of trip a high school senior could do. However, we found it’s an amazing way to see a lot at a lower cost. Our van rental costs about $300 more than a car rental for the same time period and includes our sleeping and cooking facilities. The only other things we are paying for are food (which we would have to do anyway) and campsites.

Escape Campervans have locations in:

  • Los Angeles
  • Salt Lake City
  • San Francisco

You can rent round trip or between any of those destinations.

4. South Dakota

At first glance, South Dakota’s Badlands National Park and the Black Hills aren’t necessarily places that jump to mind for a graduation trip , but their rugged and untouched beauty will leave your senior in awe.

While most national parks require at least a few miles of hiking to reach their greatest points of interest, Badlands National Park gives you stunning views almost immediately—like Door Trail or Badlands Loop Road.

Feel as if you’re in an Epic Star Wars or Star Trek adventure with some of the landscapes as well. Notch Trail winds through canyon shelves and ends in dramatic views that will definitely give you the feeling of being on another planet.

Ideas for Graduation trips with Family

If your senior is moving away to college in the fall, this may be the last time you get to take whole family vacations for a while. With college breaks not always lining up with younger kids’ school holidays, it’s the perfect time to do one last big hurrah with the whole gang.

Plus these trips make for amazing travel photos .

Why visiting Walt Disney World is better with older children.

5. Walt Disney World

If you haven’t done Disney as a whole family, this may be the time to do it. Not only is Disney better with older kids , in my opinion, it’s the perfect place to celebrate. With so much more attractions geared towards older kids such as Star Wars and Guardians of the Galaxy, Disney as one of your high school graduation vacation ideas is a fun for the whole family idea.

Walt Disney World is the kind of place where you can spend a few days or a few weeks and still have plenty to do. Don’t sweat trying to do it all, it’s nearly impossible. Pick a few of your must-dos, and enjoy the time together.

I would recommend staying on property in order to use Disney transportation.

Otherwise, consider getting a vacation home with a pool where you can have a day to chill poolside, yet still have all the things you need to snack and feed your hungry family.

Of course, if you’re in the Orlando area and are more thrill seeker fans, you can combine Disney with a trip to Universal. Grab my what not to miss at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter .

If you’re looking for ideas for a graduation trip that gives your senior a chance to bond with his family, then book a cruise .

You and your loved ones can enjoy sailing together while you soak up some Vitamin D on deck. Cruise ships also offer a variety of activities and events like spa treatments, scavenger hunts, dancing, and more—so everyone can find something they enjoy.

Alaska National Parks Road Trip

7. Alaskan Cruise or Alaska Road Trip

No matter what time of year, there’s never a bad time to visit Alaska—the northernmost U.S. state.

Although it can be expensive to fly, you’ll be able to experience wildlife, pristine landscapes, and exciting Alaskan festivities. This makes it one of the best places for a senior trip.

If you go during winter, you’ll get to see spectacular views of snow-covered mountains and frozen lakes that are sure to make your senior feel warm inside (no pun intended). Not to mention, this is a fantastic way to see the Northern Lights without leaving the country.

Consider either an Alaskan cruise as a bucket list to see incredible glaciers, or explore further inland with a road trip through the National Parks in Alaska.

Alaska was a bucket list item for us and an incredible way to view vistas we don’t see every day. Plus, your teen may be interested in summer employment in Alaska in the future. We met many college kids spending their summers in the Last Frontier.

8. All-Inclusive Graduation Trips

Like a cruise but on land, an all-inclusive resort is a fantastic way to make sure you’re taken care of during your vacation. Instead of paying for each individual part of your trip separately, you pay for it all in one fell swoop.

One of my favorite high school graduation family trip ideas, all-inclusive let you bond, do activities together or on your own, and generally just relax.

And, with options like room service and on-site dining, you can focus on spending time with your family instead of having to go out into town or eat in your hotel room. This can range from luxury Club Med destinations to horseback riding dude ranches.

Some top choices in the US include:

  • Tyler Place Family Resort – Vermont
  • Bungalows Key Largo – Florida Keys
  • Fair Hills Resort – Minnesota

If a tropical destination is what your grad has in mind, you don’t need to leave the country. Either the island nation of Puerto Rico or the southernmost spot of Key West are great ideas for a graduation trip.

15. Puerto Rico

No passport is required to get to Puerto Rico. Because it’s a US Territory, you can travel here as you would within the United States. College students can take advantage of cheap flights and warm weather. A four day itinerary in Puerto Rico will hit some of the island’s best spots.

San Juan is home to several historic sites worth exploring. The city also has tons of restaurants that serve up authentic Latin American cuisine.

The island also has plenty of beaches and places to go surfing. You could even do a natural waterslide and rainforest hike .

16. Key West

The southernmost city in Florida, Key West is known for its rich history, vibrant culture, and eclectic nightlife. There’s no shortage of fun here; a visit to Mallory Square and Duval Street will provide you with everything from street performers to food vendors and lounges – just be prepared to see some serious sunburns if you plan on spending your time on the beach.

We’re back in Hawaii, this time to Maui for surf’s up. For a graduation trip you’ll never forget, Maui is one of our top picks. With its warm weather, beautiful beaches, and year-round sunsets, it’s one of Hawaii’s most popular destinations. There are plenty of things to do on your trip here including visiting historic sites like Pearl Harbor and snorkeling in Makena. There are also opportunities for surfing, hiking, and exploring rainforests.

For those who want to hit some waves while they’re in town, you can choose from several options when it comes to surfing lessons . At Kahului Beach Park (the birthplace of modern surfing), there are instructors available that will teach you how to ride surfboards as well as stand-up paddleboards.

**2024 Note** Maui, due to the fires, may not be ready to welcome visitors yet. Be sure to inquire with locals before booking your trip to ensure you’re not doing more harm than good by traveling there.

18. Tybee Island and Savannah

If you’re looking for remote beaches mixed with old world Southern charm, Tybee Island and Savannah are my choice for your graduation trip with your teens.

First, let’s talk about the beaches of Tybee Island. this is a true hidden gem along the Georgia coastline that offers pristine beaches, sandy shores, and fresh seafood.

Take a leisurely bike ride along the picturesque streets or embark on a kayaking excursion to discover the islands natural beauty.

Savannah, in addition to it’s ornate antebellum architecture, is home to the Savannah College of Art and Design. If your teen is into art, fashion, or film, this school has woven its creative influence throughout the charming city. See a mural in a local business, it’s likely a SCAD student may have worked on it.

Check out the SCAD fashion or film festival put on each year by the school and combine your kids love into a trip they’ll never forget.

Bright Lights Big Cities

If you have culture or movie buffs as kids, some of the bigger cities might be just what they want to experience. We’ve already mentioned what a great place New York City is on a budget. If you’re willing to splurge, look to add an On Location Movie Tour . They have TV & Movie Sites , Marvel , and more. Check out the NYC and Boston Tours here.

19. Chicago

I’ve always thought Chicago is a fantastic big city that feels like a small town. It’s midwest charm, history, and architecture offer plenty to see and do.

A trip to Chicago is a must for any comedy fan. Second City, one of comedy’s most famous institutions, is located just north of the Chicago River. Their interactive improv courses are also an awesome way to get your grad laughing. After class, you can grab dinner at any of the many restaurants that surround it—from Korean fried chicken to BBQ pizza and artisan cheeses.

And while you’re in Chicago, baseball fans will love checking out Wrigley Field.

And don’t miss such Chicago food staples as Lou Malnati’s Deep Dish Pizza, and a Chicago-style dog from Portillos.

20. Los Angeles

No matter what you’re into, Los Angeles has it. The entertainment capital of America, LA is a great choice for your grad trip. Be sure to visit Rodeo Drive, Hollywood, and Malibu (the movie stars’ playground). You might even spot a celebrity or two!

One of LA’s top attractions is Universal Studios . It has rides, shows, and a lot more fun to offer. If your grad likes Harry Potter, this is the place to try all kinds of butterbeer . Everyone will be amazed by what they see there. Also, try to attend an NBA game at Staples Center.

21. San Diego

What teen doesn’t dream of an amazing trip to Comic-Con? In San Diego, your soon-to-be grad can bask in geek culture and look forward to a new adventure that his friends will envy—and remember. Make sure you take pictures of him with as many superheroes as possible for bragging rights. If there’s one thing we learned from The Hobbit, it’s that everyone loves Legolas!

22. New Orleans

I love New Orleans. Beyond Bourbon Street, there’s a lot for teens to do in New Orleans .

The birthplace of jazz, this city will give you and your teen a new appreciation for the cultural rich music on dozens of street corners in the French Quarter.

Then there’s the food. If you have a teen that loves to eat, they can explore their likes and dislikes with New Orleans staples such as beignets, gumbo, crawfish, po’boys, muffalettas, and jambalaya, just to name a few.

You can also get an authentic Mardi Gras experience, without the chaos that is Bourbon street the day of. Mardi Gras officially begins on January 6th (Three Kings Day) and there are events from January until Mardi Gras day throughout the city.

I’d recommend staying in the Warehouse District for ease of access to the best spots in the city.

Graduation Trip Ideas

23. Seattle

My daughter’s choice for her graduation trip is Seattle, Washington. She’s a music fan and coffee lover, as well as enjoying nature. This gateway to the Pacific Northwest makes it a perfect destination.

While in Seattle, explore the Pike Place Market , the Museum of Pop Culture, and a trip to the top of the Space Needle.

While many people know that Starbucks arose from Seattle, the Emerald City was some to quite the coffee culture long before Starbucks became a household name. Get your teen ready for late night studying with the Seattle Coffee Culture Tour .

And of course, if you’re like me, and grew up on 90s grunge, visiting the birthplace of your favorite artists with your teen is an incredible shared experience.

Outside the main city, visit Olympic National Park , a vast park of nearly a million acres with several distinct ecosystems, including a rainforest.

If you have a little extra time, about 3 hours from Seattle is North Cascades National Park.

24. Portland

Portland, Oregon is known for its weirdness. In fact, it’s their slogan, Keep Portland Weird.

Portland is filled with quirky neighborhoods, artisanal spirit, and a thriving food scene. The city has a vibe like no other.

Additionally, Portland is committed to sustainability and green energy. Be on the lookout for how they are keeping to “green” practices that connect it to the nature around it.

Favorites in Portland include Powell’s City of Books, one of the world’s largest independent bookstores, the Japanese gardens, and nearby drives to dozens of waterfalls.

There's nothing like graduating to make you want a celebratory vacation.

Both a massive accomplishment and a bittersweet end of an era, completing your studies can also be a reality check as you begin the next phase of your life.

So, where should you go once you graduate? These 10 incredible destinations allow you to put off real life for a little bit longer.

A man flips into the deep blue water of a cenote in Mexico.

Affordable and with a wealth of diverse things to do, Mexico is the perfect post-graduation escape. The country has a happy place for everyone. Head to Tulum for a beachy, out-till-dawn vacation that is bursting will beach clubs, upscale cocktails and cerulean cenotes. Look to Puerto Vallarta for a classic, lay-by-the-pool escape. In Mexico City , you can try local delicacies and get lost in a museum for the afternoon. Stop by the stunning Museo Universitario del Chopo , which boasts an extensive contemporary art collection.  Oaxaca offers a mix of Indigenous and colonial influences, with day trips out to explore the natural world and local villages. Head to Santiago Apoala for a look at a remote Mixtec village in the heart of a towering mountain range. If the last four years in the library require some sunshine and a warm place to recover, there is no better place than Mexico to finish that beach read.

2. Road trip across the US

Nothing bonds a group together like a long car journey, making a road trip across the US with your mates the perfect post-graduation send-off. It's hard to grasp the magnitude of the United States until you drive through it. Pick between visiting iconic national parks like Yellowstone ,   Yosemite  and the Grand Canyon , or cruising along the West Coast from the Redwoods to Joshua Tree  with a stop in some of the Golden State's famed cities, like San Francisco and Los Angeles . Uncovering the mysteries of the West has long been an American tradition, not to mention watching the landscapes change and evolve in a matter of days is a mesmerizing experience.

To keep this adventure affordable, try camping in the national parks rather than staying in hotels. It will require some advanced planning, maybe even some reservations. Visit nps.gov for more information.

Few places have the same vacation appeal as Greece . With its hot, sunny climate and stellar museums, especially the Acropolis Museum , the fantastic restaurants and endless island hopping opportunities, it's hard to have a dull moment. Pro-tip: Don't skip Athens . The birthplace of Western civilization and a paradise for thinkers, artists and scientists, come see the starting place for man's greatest ideas.

When it comes to Greece's islands, Mykonos is where the nightlife takes center stage, while Santorini provides a more romantic and relaxing atmosphere. Beware, a steep price tag comes with Greece's most popular island spots. Alternatively, if you crave a slightly less touristy experience, the Ionian Islands in early autumn make a great escape. Slow down, eat your way through fresh local delicacies and see what makes the Mediterranean way of life so revered.

4. Costa Rica

If college wasn't enough of a thrill, head to Costa Rica . Considered one of the happiest places on earth and packed with adventure opportunities, you can white water raft, zipline, traverse sky-high bridges, and surf the most stellar waves to your heart's content.

If you've spent the last four years in the heart of a city and are in dire need of some nature, warm weather, and delicious food , this after-graduation trip is for you. Start your day with a hearty serving of gallo pinto , take refuge from the heat with a street mango smothered in lime juice, salt and chili powder and wrap up the day with chifrijo,  a local dish of fried pork and beans with all the toppings. Not to mention, eating your body weight in ceviche is considered a right of passage. Pura Vida is right!

5. Vietnam

Affordable, beautiful and warm, a graduation trip to Vietnam gets you out of your comfort zone. Get lost in a sea of mopeds in Hanoi and slurp pho on stools along the sidewalk. Head up to Halong Bay , where you can tour its limestone islands on a junk boat. Enjoy an urban metropolis like Ho Chi Minh City , wander the Binh Tay Market  or visit Vietnam's only Taoist temple,  Khanh Van Nam Vien Pagoda , before cruising along the Mekong Delta and getting to know the locals at the Cai Rang Floating Market .

6. New Orleans, Louisiana

For a graduation trip that melds celebration with culture, look no further than New Orleans . The loud streets of this city burst with energy: live bands, dancing, cocktails and more. As New Orleans continues to be impacted by climate change, try to reduce your impact during your visit by using trains, bikes and public transport to explore the city.  Eat beignets (deep-fried pâte à choux pastries) in the French Quarter , listen to jazz in a dimly lit bar, and if you time it right, join in with the commotion of Mardi Gras . Beyond the nightlife, the Big Easy is famous for its flavorful cuisine and unique rich history. Make sure to take the time to appreciate both. Don't miss having a steaming bowl of gumbo or biting into a massive Po'boy. Follow it up with a visit to the  Ogden Museum of Southern Art , which explores the city's complex influences and longtime connection to the natural world.

A couple walks down the streets of Brooklyn laughing happily.

7. New York City

A graduation trip can also be an opportunity to test out potential places you may want to live. For many, that means New York City . Visit before you commit to living here: it's busy, loud, (sometimes) stinky and eye-openingly wonderful. But it's not for everyone. For this test run, spend your time checking out galleries and parks while eating at some amazing restaurants. It will be a pricey trip, no matter how hard you try to budget. Still, it's a great chance to meet new people and try every cuisine you can imagine. Make sure to catch the train to Brooklyn for an afternoon in the Botanical Gardens .

8. South Africa

Not ready to stop learning? Head to South Africa . With a tumultuous and storied history, a trip to this stunning country can be life-changing. Apartheid isn't that far in the rearview mirror, and its lasting effects are visible across much of the nation. Dedicate time to visiting some of the historical sites in Johannesburg, such as the Apartheid Museum and Constitution Hill , a former prison turned Constitutional Court. Then, hit the beach to surf some famous waves at Addington Beach along the iconic Golden Mile or catch glimpses of South Africa's diverse wildlife in the expansive Kruger National Park . Keep your eyes peeled for big cats, elephants, rhinos and more. Find time to catch at least one sunset from the top of Table Mountain . Its unmatched views are accessible by cable car in Cape Town.

GettyImages-173070430.jpg

With stunning fjords, shooting geysers, natural hot springs and the northern lights – Iceland offers an otherworldly reset from your studies. A nature-first vacation, try and dedicate some time beyond the beautiful capital Reykjavik . You'll need a large budget to chase waterfalls, sip pints and toast your graduation in Iceland, but you'll look at the world entirely anew.

10. Florence, Italy

Florence offers a decadence and youthfulness that is easier to access than in Rome or Naples , and its Renaissance beauty will fill your aching heart if you don't want to leave university or college. Marvel at Botticelli's masterpiece, the Birth of Venus, in the Uffizi and wander the expansive Boboli Gardens . Luxuriate with two-hour dinners on one of their many piazzas, climb to the top of the fabled Duomo to take in the rolling hills in the distance. There is so much to love about Florence, but like most major cities in Italy, it can be expensive, but it's the price you pay to heal your heartache.

9 Graduation Trip Ideas for Every Budget

By Megan Spurrell

A graduation vacation is about more than knocking back drinks in a foreign land. Such adventures can also offer moments of reflection on what lies ahead. Choosing how to spend this milestone trip isn’t easy, either. In addition to setting a budget and choosing your travel companions, recent grads should consider what they want to get out of the trip, advises Shelby Albo, travel consultant at Embarc Collective . Here, we’ve pulled together nine unforgettable graduation trip ideas that appeal to a range of travel styles—no matter what your budget is.

The other Southeast Asia loop

“Backpacking trips in a foreign country are truly unbeatable, especially for graduation,” says Jen Richardson, a travel planner at Scouted . We all know the classic loop through Thailand, Cambodia, Vietnam, and Laos, and it’s a great one—the region is affordable for travelers spending U.S. dollars and there is no shortage of cultural sites, natural wonders, and lively parties. But you can find all of that and more on a less-traveled path farther south.  In Indonesia, visit the bustling capital of Jakarta, scooter between rice fields in Ubud, and kick back on the postcard-perfect islands of Lombok and Bali . Experience a mix of cultures in Malaysia by tasting laksa curry on the streets of Penang and visiting the Hindu temples in the Batu Caves, then swing down to Singapore . It isn’t cheap by any stretch, but a few days in the street food capital—which has colorful architecture, lush hiking trails, and a high-tech airport with a butterfly garden and movie theater—are worth the end-of-trip-splurge.

A weekend (or longer) in Puerto Rico

The Commonwealth is an easy flight from much of the U.S., and you don’t even need a passport. If you have just a weekend, book an Airbnb in one of the candy-colored colonial buildings of Old San Juan, where reggaeton and salsa fill the streets and the Bad Bunny–approved cocktail bar La Factoría comes alive seven nights a week. If you have five to seven days to explore, plan a multi-stop road trip around the island—surfing on the West Coast, night kayaking in one of Puerto Rico's three bioluminescent bays, and baking on the dazzling white sands of Culebra Island.

South India immersion

You want to go far, but you don’t want to go alone: Intrepid Travel’s group trips are built around this premise, with accessible price points always front of mind. The outfitter’s two-week Real South India trip (from $909 per person) is a great graduation trip idea—it takes up to 16 free spirits (ages 18 to 29) from Hyderabad to Kochi, with five stops and two overnight trains in between. See Bollywood film sets in Ramoji Film City, explore Hindu temples in Mamallapuram, observe elephants and tigers in Bandipur National Park, and feast on stuffed dosa in Madurai. The rate covers guides, accommodations, select meals, and numerous activities; set your Google Flights tracker now for a stellar airline deal.

The Utah parks circuit

Grab a few pals and pile into a van to go park-hopping in Utah . The state’s national parks and monuments promise slot canyons ( Zion and Grand Staircase-Escalante), forests of rock hoodoos ( Bryce Canyon ), sand dunes (at Coral Pink Sand Dunes State Park), and bright red rock carved by the Colorado River (Canyonlands), to name just a few of the Beehive State’s otherworldly landscapes. Spend your days hiking and evenings camping under the stars—the Fruita Campground in Capitol Reef National Park is worth planning around—in settings so stunning, they'll stick with you for a lifetime.

A sunny Caribbean cruise

After years of grinding, you might be ready to simply laze in the sun—a true treat-yourself moment before starting college or before your first job begins. Book a spot on a Caribbean cruise , which will have space for all of your friends and won’t require you to lift a single finger once you are onboard. Royal Caribbean offers a huge selection of affordable cruises departing from New York, Florida, and Galveston, Texas. Go for one of the five-night options , which stop in the crystalline waters of Cozumel, Mexico, and George Town, Grand Cayman, and offer plenty of nightlife and poolside entertainment options to keep things interesting.

Southern U.S. road trip

For a memorable American road trip, make the drive from Atlanta to West Texas , with stops in New Orleans and Austin en route. You’ll find music and nightlife all along the way—Atlanta’s Trap Music Museum and Second Line parades weaving through the streets of NOLA are not to be missed—plus roadside photo ops (hello, Marfa Prada store ). Scrimp by staying at Airbnbs in each destination; if you’re traveling with just a friend or two, rented rooms, instead of private apartments, are a great way to meet other travelers. Staying at locally owned properties is "such a good way to support the local culture and will make for a rich experience,” says Richardson.

A tour through South America

This may not be among the first graduation trip ideas that come to mind, but why not put those years of Spanish to use in South America? While the distances are greater than those in Southeast Asia, and the prices somewhat higher, sticking to the northwestern edge of the continent will give you the best bang for your buck. Plus, “planes are super affordable,” says Katalina Mayorga, founder of El Camino Travel , thanks to new budget lines such as Viva Air Colombia and Star Perú.  In four to eight weeks, you can hit the Caribbean coast in Colombia (with stops in Cartagena and Tayrona National Natural Park); the Andean cities of Medellín , Quito , and La Paz ; and ogle natural wonders like the Amazon rain forest (best accessed via Iquitos, Peru), the Uyuni salt flats of southwest Bolivia, and, of course, Machu Picchu . From learning about Afro-Caribbean dance to touring Inca archaeological sites, you’ll have loads to talk about with the fellow travelers you meet in hostels along the way.

Eastern Europe backpacking trip

“European backpacking trips are still very popular,” says Albo. “The ease of traveling from one country to another is an attractive aspect.” Not only is Eastern Europe more affordable than France, Spain, and Italy, it’s less crowded than its western neighbors—despite offering just as many reasons to visit. In dreamy Old World cities like Prague and Budapest , regal churches and castles are just as appealing as the edgy nightlife scenes. (Want to party in a converted bunker? Done.) By train or bus, get out to the scenic countryside and hike the Tatras mountains that border Slovakia and Poland before exploring the quaint old town of Gdańsk. Trust us—you’ll leave wondering why the rest of your friends haven’t considered Eastern Europe yet.

The Camino de Santiago

There’s something enticing about marking one milestone with another. For travelers who want to do it in hiking boots , a Camino de Santiago pilgrimage is an ideal challenge. The Camino refers to a network of trails that all lead to a shrine of Saint James the Great in Galicia, Spain, with several starting points throughout the country. Beginners, however, are recommended to follow the Camino Frances route, which begins just over the border in Saint-Jean-Pied-de-Port in the French Pyrenees. The journey takes 30 to 35 days and includes overnights in albergues (bed-and-breakfasts). If you find yourself needing a little motivation along the trail, just visualize the tapas and vino waiting for you each night.

10 Graduation Trip Ideas for Every Budget and Travel Style

From Peru to Paris, these are some of the best trips to take after graduation.

graduation trip planner

Valerie de Leon/Travel + Leisure

Everyone travels for a different reason. For some, travel is an adventure, a way to discover all that the world has to offer. Others use it as a means of escaping everyday stresses. It’s also one of the best ways to celebrate life’s biggest moments, whether it’s a new beginning, an exciting achievement, or both. Graduation certainly falls into the latter category, and you’ll often see those earning a high school, college, or post-grad diploma marking the accomplishment with a memorable travel experience. Plus, this is an occasion that’s often accompanied by the rare chance to travel without missing classes or taking off work. So if there’s ever a good time to go on that trip you’ve always dreamed about, it’s right after graduation.

When it comes to graduation trips, there are no hard-and-fast rules about how or where you should travel; they can run the gamut from quick beach weekends to week-long, multi-country adventures. It all depends on your preference, budget, and availability. To help narrow down your choices, we spoke with two of Travel + Leisure ’s trusted A-List advisors, Maria Diego of Diego Travel and Jean Sanz of JSB Journeys , to curate a list of the best graduation trip ideas.

Taylor McIntyre/Travel + Leisure

When you want a graduation trip with lots of sunshine, salt water, and beautiful scenery, but you don’t want a super long flight, choose Costa Rica, T+L’s 2024 Destination of the Year . “The proximity to the U.S. makes this a quick jump over if time is of the essence,” Sanz tells T+L. Start your journey by indulging in a bit of luxurious relaxation — “You can enjoy hot springs and hang out with friends at The Springs Resort & Spa while sipping on a drink as you overlook the Arenal Volcano,” says Sanz  — then move on to something more active. There are numerous hiking opportunities in this biodiverse country, ranging from beginner to more advanced trails. If you’re really looking to challenge yourself, embark on the 174-mile Camino de Costa Rica .

Lauren Breedlove/Travel + Leisure

Thinking about a West Coast trip? San Diego could be in the cards. The Southern California city is known for its warm, dry summers, and there are plenty of activities to fill an itinerary, no matter your interests. If you want an active graduation trip, book a surf lesson with Surf Diva , hike Torrey Pines State Park Loop, and practice your swing at the famed Torrey Pines Golf Course . For a trip that’s centered around art, explore the collections at the Museum of Contemporary Art San Diego , The San Diego Museum of Art , and the Mingei International Museum . If you want to do nothing but lounge by the beach or pool, check into Hotel del Coronado or The Lodge at Torrey Pines for a few extra-luxe nights.

While Diego notes that she wouldn’t recommend St. Barts for a high school graduation trip, it is a special, celebratory destination that could be a good option for those graduating from college. In Diego’s words, it’s an “island that outshines them all,” and if you visit in the late summer (as opposed to the popular winter season), you’ll often see lower prices and fewer crowds. “ Eden Rock is always a popular choice if you want to see and be seen, or if you're looking for more of a hideaway with an ultra-chic clientele and [a] lower-key beach club, I recommend Le Toiny ,” she says.

Buenos Aires and Patagonia

“Aside from the fact that it should be on everyone's bucket list, Buenos Aires is an eclectic cosmopolitan city, with cocktail bars, nightclubs, and an incredible food scene,” says Sanz. After spending a few days in the city, make your way to Patagonia , where you’ll need your hiking boots, waterproof layers, and plenty of bug spray and sunscreen. “You can hike from camp to camp as you overlook the amazing Fitz Roy mountain and end in a fabulous adventure lodge like Explora . The food and the dramatic landscapes are also a great way to treat yourself as you walk into a new world,” she adds.

National Park Road Trip

Irjaliina Paavonpera/Travel + Leisure

“A road trip is always a great way to celebrate a milestone. We have some of the most beautiful parks and animals on the planet in our own backyard,” says Diego. If you’re planning an extended graduation trip, spread out over several weeks, you could try to plot out some of our nation’s biggest national parks out West— from the Great Sand Dunes to Zion — and check them all off on an epic road trip. But if you’re only planning on traveling for about a week, and you still want to see some impressive wildlife and scenery, head to Grand Teton National Park and Yellowstone National Park, which are about an hour’s drive from one another. Most travelers fly into Jackson Hole Airport, the only commercial airport within a U.S. national park, and use Jackson Hole as their base camp for exploring Grand Teton National Park over a period of two to three days. Yellowstone takes a bit more time; plan on spending three to four days traversing the park and checking off your top highlights and points of interest.

New York City

Valerie de Leon/Travel + Leisure

New York City has something for everyone — and that includes recent grads. If it’s your first time in the Big Apple, you’ll probably want to experience all of the classics: a Yankees game, Central Park, a slice at a quintessential pizzeria, a Broadway show, and some of New York City’s best museums , including The Metropolitan Museum of Art , The Guggenheim , and The Whitney . It’ll be a packed trip, so don’t forget your best walking shoes; depending on your schedule, you’ll probably end up trekking multiple miles as you make your way through the boroughs. While NYC isn’t known as a particularly cheap destination, it does have a whole host of free things to do if you’re looking to keep costs down.

“I think Africa is the perfect option for a graduation trip, particularly gorilla trekking in Rwanda ,” says Diego. “In order to do the chimpanzee and gorilla treks, the minimum age requirement is 18, which would be a fantastic age to have this experience.” She also suggests starting your trip at the Kigali Genocide Memorial in the capital of Rwanda: “While extremely sad, it is very educational and sets a context for the entirety of the trip.  Once you see the history of what this small country has gone through, and overcome, it changes you in a very impactful way.  I can't think of a better gift to share with a young adult than the entire experience that is Rwanda.”

London and Paris

Leopoldine Bauer/Travel + Leisure

Out of all the cities in the world, London and Paris are two of the most iconic — and they’re only two hours apart by train. Start your trip in the Big Smoke, where you can cheers to your diploma over Champagne afternoon tea at The Ritz and get your steps in while walking through Green Park, St. James’s Park, and some of the city’s most picturesque neighborhoods. Rest up at The Laslett , an expertly designed boutique hotel in Notting Hill, before hopping aboard the Eurostar to Paris. You may have a long list of must-sees in the City of Lights, but leave time for the best parts of a Parisian adventure: leisurely coffee breaks at cafés, croissant and baguette runs, and a long stroll down the Avenue des Champs-Élysées. For a particularly memorable stay in Paris, Diego recommends Le Grand Contrôle , “the hotel in the Château de Versailles that allows special access without the crowds.”

Rory Fuller/Travel + Leisure

Travelers might want to use this time off to tour Peru, the home of Machu Picchu and part of the Amazon rainforest. “Hiking the last part of the Inca Trail and arriving at the majestic citadel of Machu Picchu gives you a mystical sense of being — and [it’s] a great feeling of freedom to have after several years of university,” says Sanz. She suggests staying at the Palacio del Inka in Cusco, where you can sip piscos on your balcony, and leaving time for Lima. When in the capital, follow Sanz’s advice and “explore the culinary delights of Mayta [and its] fantastic cocktail menu.”

When the only thing you want to do after graduation is soak up some sun on the beach, look no further than Charleston . The Holy City is known for its laidback lifestyle, and there are several beaches within driving distance of the downtown area. Folly Beach is where you’ll find kitschy beach shops, amazing seafood restaurants, and opportunities to surf. Sullivan’s Island is a bit quieter, but its main street, Middle Street, becomes a hub of activity on summer weekends. If the whole family is joining your grad trip, book a stay at Wild Dunes Resort on Isle of Palms. No matter which beach you choose, you’ll be able to find plenty of R&R before starting your next life chapter.

Collecting payments for senior class or graduation trips can be simplified through payment plans, enabling students to spread out the cost. Additionally, organizing fundraising events such as car washes, bake sales, and silent auctions can help alleviate trip expenses for everyone.

Senior class and graduation trips help students develop practical skills such as independent travel, budget management, and effective communication. These skills prove invaluable as they navigate college, the workforce, and daily life.

The lasting memories created during these trips serve as a source of comfort and inspiration as students transition into adulthood. They carry the lessons, joys, and connections forged during these adventures into their future endeavors.

Need some help figuring out your next senior trip? Here’s a short guide for your convenience.

Destination.

When it’s time to plan your senior class trip, consider a destination or two that you’d like to consider. Do you want to visit a city with a lot of history? Do you want to plan a trip with several outdoor excursions and activities? Of course, budget will be a determining factor, but narrowing your ideas to one or two locations will help in the planning process.

Whether your budget is conservative or generous, travel is possible either way. Think about money that will come from different sources. Will each student pay their own way? Do you have several fundraisers planned? Do you have corporate sponsors that are willing to make a donation to your trip? It’s good to have a game plan for the “who’s” and “where’s” when it comes to budget.

Dates of Travel

Make sure you know what travel dates are approved by your school administration. You’ll want to have a clear idea of when you can travel prior to planning the trip. If you can have an alternate date approved as well, that is ideal. Sometimes popular destinations fill up fast for hotels and activities. And if you have pre-approval from your administration for the dates of travel, when it comes time for final approval, that’s one less hurdle for you

Typically when students learn that a trip is happening, there’s a lot of interest right off the bat. That enthusiasm can wane so it’s important for you to “sell” the trip to your students. They will match your level of excitement and of course you want as many students to experience the trip as possible. Emails to parents, posters in your school, shared information in apps like Remind all help to keep the enrollment in your trip robust. You want to fill those buses to maximize your trip budget.

Once you have sketched out your destination, your group size, the dates of travel, and your budget, contact Peak. We will go over all the goals of your trip and partner with you to build the itinerary to fit your needs and create an experience for your students that they won’t soon forget.

Congrats, grad! Commemorate your achievement with these graduation trip ideas

Oh, the places you’ll voyage.

There’s no better way to celebrate a new chapter in your life than by cruising to an epic destination you’ve always wanted to visit. Graduation is right around the corner, and while moving on to a new stage in your education or career is a celebration in itself, a cruise vacation is a particularly memorable way to honor the accomplishments of the grad in your life. Whether it’s just a quick break before transitioning into a Master’s program, or a life intermission before entering the workforce, gathering the family (or some friends) for a graduation voyage allows you to visit multiple vacation destinations on one trip , and makes turning the page even more special.

A budget-friendly college graduation trip

Money is tight for new college graduates. We get that. You’ve just finished four years of school, and haven’t yet entered the workforce. It's an awkward in-between period where you feel like celebrating your accomplishment and blowing off steam, but don’t exactly have tons of expendable income to do it (and don’t necessarily want to feel forced into a family vacation with your parents). That’s where cruises come in.

Our cruises, which cater to adults and young adults , are designed for the budget-friendly traveler. Not only do we offer everything young adults could possibly want in a post-grad getaway – a nightclub, bookable karaoke rooms, 20+ free eateries – we also have flexible payment options, including a monthly payment plan , to make voyages more financially feasible. The best part? Once you book a ticket, you can put your wallet away. Aside from optional extras, all your food, entertainment, hot tub sessions, karaoke nights, and spectacular sea views are included!

Inspiration for your graduation trip

College is over. The long hours of studying and trying to come up with the right answer on a test are over. But there’s still one important decision to be made: exactly where do you go on your celebratory graduation vacation? Luckily, there are plenty of graduation trip ideas and vacation options to choose from, and it’s never too early to start planning.

Graduation Trip Idea 1: Hit the beaches on a tropical escape

No matter what kind of climate you’re coming from, nothing is as relaxing as a tropical beach vacation. The perfect way to unwind after years of toiling away in class, a beach getaway is a much-needed reprieve before launching into the uncertain world of job searching or graduate school. Voyaging to destinations like the Caribbean, Mexico, or islands in the Mediterranean, is the ideal way to celebrate a graduation.

Graduation Trip Idea 2: Go on a road trip adventure

Embracing the freedom of the open road is a fitting way to celebrate… well, the freedom of life after graduation. A road trip to Miami with friends is always a good idea. It can be as simple as creating a basic itinerary, with a loose enough structure to allow for adventure and spontaneity. Just make sure you give yourself enough time to explore all Miami has to offer, including the lively beaches, nightlife scene, and colorful art district, before embarking on your cruise adventure.

Graduation Trip Idea 3: Plan a cultural expedition

You might have had enough learning after just finishing school, but experiential learning is much more exciting (and some would say more valuable) than sitting in a classroom. Visiting historical cities like Athens , Barcelona , and Bruges , can be a great way to expand your cultural knowledge, and learn more about art, architecture, music, and food.

Graduation Trip Idea 4: Take a graduation cruise

Call us biased, but we think a cruise is the best way to celebrate your graduation. A unique and epic adventure, cruises can bring you to multiple destinations on the same trip, all while giving you access to a range of fun-filled amenities onboard. From our Korean BBQ with communal dining and drinking games to our karaoke rooms and nightclub, there are no shortage of activities onboard to keep your grad entertained – not to mention the beautiful ports they’ll be waking up to every day.

Best Caribbean islands to travel to for graduation trips

What's the one thing you’re probably daydreaming about when you’re neck deep in a final exam, waiting for the final page, and watching the seconds tick off the clock above the door? A Caribbean summer beach holiday, obviously. After all those years with your head in the books, there’s nowhere better to finally rest your head than on a beach lounger somewhere in the Caribbean with one of the most popular cruises from Miami .

Between the colorful Old San Juan, the nearby rainforest, and delicious cuisine, San Juan is an ideal destination for grads looking for a little cultural education on their vacation.

Cozumel (Playa del Carmen)

Students of history will love Cozumel, with tours available to ancient ruins dating back thousands of years. Students of sunbathing will also love the area’s pristine beaches.

Bimini, Bahamas

School’s over. Time to blow off some steam. There’s no better place to do it than Bimini, our exclusive beach club in the Bahamas. Relax on the beach with a book, or vibe to DJ beats while sitting poolside sipping a margarita.

Costa Maya is the best of both worlds. If you’re the kind of traveler who simply wants to chill beachside with a drink in hand, you can. If you’d rather rip through the Mexican jungle on an adrenaline-pumping ATV ride, you can do that too.

Puerto Plata

This is the kind of place you dream about when you’re buried in homework and squinting for the light at the end of the tunnel. From waterfalls and beaches to colorful architecture in 16th-century Puerto Plata, this island has it all.

Discover adventure on a cultural expedition

Just because school’s out, doesn’t mean you need to stop learning. Vacation isn’t just about sitting on a beach and getting tan. It’s also for getting acquainted with other cultures that have rich histories and traditions, as well as active experiences like snorkeling and off-roading that give you a deeper look at what makes a destination special. Whether it’s visiting museums and historic sites, indulging in local, traditional cuisine, or going beyond the port city on an adrenaline-pumping adventure , vacation can be the perfect opportunity for some experiential learning.

What better way to introduce yourself to the local marine ecosystem than by strapping on a snorkel and seeing the fish, turtles, stingrays, and coral reefs up close?

Scuba Diving

Take an even deeper look at a destination's aquatic world. Scuba diving gives you a close-up view of the mysteries of the sea like nothing else.

Jet Ski Tours

The best way to explore a destination’s coastline isn’t by bus, but of course, by jet ski. Take to the water for an exciting ride that’ll give you a front row seat to some pretty epic scenery – both on land and at sea.

Cultural Tours

Cultural tours are arguably the best way to really get to know a new destination. Sure, school might be over, but experiential learning is always more fun than reading textbooks. Hit a local museum, head into the countryside for wine tasting, or take a guided tour around the city. When you leave, you’ll have a much fuller understanding of the place than if you had simply lounged on the beach.

Off Road Tours

Think of it as the land version of jet skiing. Whipping through backroads, up mountains, and through jungles and forests, isn’t just a thrilling way to spend an afternoon. It’s also a great way to dive head first into a destination’s natural landscape, and often to see its most breathtaking views.

Celebrate with an Epic Graduation Trip

When you graduate, everyone tells you some variation of these cliches: “seize the day,” and “the world is your oyster.” Well, what better way to seize the day than by booking a cruise to celebrate this huge milestone? And once you start browsing our destination pages, you’ll quickly realize – the world is, in fact, your oyster. From Caribbean beaches to ancient Mediterranean cities, there are nearly limitless options for exploring the world on our voyages for your graduation trip.

Plan your perfect graduation cruise.

Planning a Graduation Trip 101

Hailey Belval and Teagan Dooley June 9, 2021

Senior year has looked different than anything we had ever expected and dreamt of for the last eleven years. We have missed out on important milestones such as prom, homecoming, pep rallies and so much more; but with the recent advancement in vaccines, it is now possible to plan a Covid-safe graduation trip. During the last two months, we have been planning our own graduation trip to Charleston, South Carolina in June with our friends, and found a few pointers necessary for anybody else looking to plan a trip soon too.

  • Where am I going?

The first question you have to ask yourself when planning any sort of trip is where is my general destination point. Decide whether you are going somewhere to see a specific city, monument, park, museum, or are just basing it on the climate and what seems the most enjoyable.

Depending on the time of year different regions within the United States’ weather can change drastically, so researching average temperatures during your month of travel is a must. If you prefer year-round warmth and a modern scene, look toward states like North/South Carolina, Texas, or California for some great memories. However, if you are looking for adventure and don’t mind the cold check out places like Colorado, Montana, or Maine for a unique experience.

  • What are my travel options?

Depending on the distance, you have to ask yourself should I drive or fly? For our trip, it was the question of a fifteen-hour drive or a $300 direct flight. While budgeting is important, our final decision to fly was based on how we wanted to spend our time and also what was the most reliable option.

Driving can be a very fun bonding experience, however, be conscious of how tiring and boring extensive hours on the road can be. The car you take on your trip has to be large enough to fit everybody’s equipment and luggage, comfortable enough for everybody in your party, and reliable enough to make the trip there and back successfully. While this is a seemingly much cheaper option, keep in mind gas prices, food stops, and the potential of an overnight stay. Can you survive a 10-hour car trip with your friends, or should you pay more for the ease of a plane ticket?

  • Who should be my travel buddy?

Not every high schooler has been on a plane or driven cross country by themselves at this point in their lives. Of course, when planning a graduation trip no one would hesitate to plan it with their best friends to experience a great vacation together before leaving for college in the fall. However, you have to be honest with yourself about whether you–or your friends–are responsible enough to navigate flights, rides, booking a place to stay, and traveling in general.

They say there is a “mom” in every friend group, and during the planning stage of your trip, this person is a good candidate to elect as the head planner. Having someone to help organize the itinerary, cost, and navigation of your trip is a necessity when you are traveling without a parent or adult.

  • How do I stay safe?

Massachusetts has recently changed its travel restrictions in a somewhat controversial way. It is no longer required and is now “advised” that you quarantine for seventy-two hours and get tested upon your return home from traveling. This has created fear among some students that since quarantine post-travel is no longer “excused” from school, that it may be avoided altogether.

It is important to remind yourself of those that you will be infecting upon return. As a group, we are all “half-vaccinated” and awaiting our second doses very soon. The state has lifted its requirement for those vaccinated to be tested upon return because of their confidence in how well the process has gone so far.

  • What are my peers doing?

We have been mostly discussing the option to travel state to state being approved in the US, but a group of seniors has also explored the international option of travel. Senior Graceanne Clancy and three of her friends have decided to set their destination point to Canada this summer! “We have been very locked up the past year and we are very excited to experience a new culture and get back to what life used to look like now that we are vaccinated!”

Every country looks a little different right now as do their current Covid numbers and travel restrictions, so make sure to do your research beforehand. New countries are exciting, but knowing the culture and being prepared is important to do first!

All in all, your graduation trip (should you choose to plan one) is entirely up to you and your friends. The class of 2021 lost nearly half of our high school experience, and with vaccines becoming more accessible it’s not absurd to seek an escape from Zoom to somewhere unexplored. If you are being Covid-safe and are ready to escape house arrest–we wish you all the best in your travels and hope you make some lasting memories on your graduation trip!

Planning the Perfect Graduation Trip

Planning the perfect graduation trip can be difficult, especially for graduating seniors who may need approval from their parents or guardians. But it isn’t impossible. Graduation trips are a marvelous way to reward all the student’s hard work and spend some good quality time with them after high school is over.

graduation trip planner

 Budget

Planning the Perfect Graduation Trip: First things first, set a budget before you start researching. This budget will help determine where you can realistically afford to go as well as for how long. All-inclusive resorts can sometimes bring down the cost especially when you are planning to go with a large group of people. In fact, many places can give you group discounts if you’re traveling with more than 15 people at a time.

Pick a Destination

This is the fun part, choosing a location that will fit everyone’s needs. Cancun or Punta Cana are high on the list because of the hot sun, warm beaches, and long stretches of sand. Dozens of other places are popular for high school grad trips, but these destinations have perfect balances of things to do and places to eat, drink and sleep.

Hire Tour experts

Whether you’re a parent planning a graduation getaway for your student or an experienced traveler, it’s always important to do your research before you go somewhere—especially if you’re traveling abroad or to an unfamiliar destination. The best way to make sure everyone has a safe grad trip is to look into tour companies who know their way around the destination.

Plan excursions ahead of time

Planning the Perfect Graduation Trip: Your students need you to ensure they have a terrific time on their graduation trip. It is the culmination of all the hard work they have done in high school for years, so be sure to plan ahead and book the activities you need so that you can be a part of this great experience.

In fact, many parents do come along on graduation trips so this is a good way to bond with their students on a grad trip.

Get Ready To Travel

Make sure you have all the proper things you need to travel such as passports, and if you’re traveling within the USA, your ID. Now that you’ve done all the planning, organizing, and budgeting, it’s time to start the official countdown to the graduation trip.

College Graduation Trip Ideas

Collegiateparent.

graduation trip planner

Graduation is right around the corner, and your student may be dreaming about taking a trip to celebrate.

The time between graduation and the start of that first “real job” or graduate school is ideal for traveling, and a trip can be an opportunity for personal growth as well as a reward for years of hard work in college. After Amelia graduated from Bridgewater State in Massachusetts, she used her family’s flight points to help pay for airfare along with graduation gift money to finance a trip to Europe. Amelia said, “I learned more about myself in eighteen days alone in foreign countries than I did in four years of undergrad!”

Whether for an epic road trip with friends, or a solo backpacking experience in a distant part of the world, your student may have been dreaming and saving for a while — or perhaps you’ll surprise them with plane tickets, gas money or the whole trip.

Whatever your approach, we have tips and ideas to ignite some travel inspiration!

When Is the Best Time to Travel?

College graduation trip ideas

Summer is a popular season to travel and you will find more expensive flights on peak summer dates ranging from June 24 to August 7. CheapAir’s study suggests that the closer you get to late August and September, the better chance you have of booking more affordable airfare.

Graduation Trip Ideas in the United States

The United States is packed full of gems for your soon-to-be graduate to explore: historical monuments, national parks, miraculous waterfalls, incredible architecture and much more. If your student isn’t sure where they want to go yet, we’ve researched popular destinations and polled recent college graduates on some of their favorite places.

FOR THE ADVENTUROUS SPIRIT

How about a road trip to visit a couple of America’s national parks? Summer is high tourist season, so your grad should be sure to book their camping spots or make lodging reservations in advance. If they take a trip out west, suggest these national parks.

graduation trip planner

  • Yosemite, in the Sierra Nevada Mountains in California, encompasses some of the finest hiking and climbing in America. Your grad will want to check out iconic Half Dome (watch the Oscar-winning documentary  Free Solo  first!) as well as Yosemite’s tallest waterfall,  Bridalveil Fall .
  • Yellowstone National Park sprawls across parts of Wyoming, Montana and Idaho and is known for its wildlife and amazing geothermal features.  Rough Guides has tips  for how to avoid the summer crowds.
  • The Grand Canyon located in Arizona is 277 miles long, about 18 miles wide, and up to one mile deep. It is an absolutely breathtaking experience. It’s pretty hot in the summer, but might be a perfect destination if your grad will plan an autumn trip.
  • Take a trip to  Glacier National Park and hike any part of the 700 miles of trails in Northwestern Montana.
  • Grand Teton National Park in Wyoming is a remarkable place to adventure with gorgeous terrain featuring mountains, lakes, rivers and forests as well as diverse wildlife.

Useful tool:  Download the  AllTrails app . It’s free and hosts over 60,000 trails for hiking, trail running and biking. It is extremely user-friendly and makes navigating in an unfamiliar place simple. Users can filter length, rating and difficulty level for a custom experience when embarking on their adventure.

DISCOVER A NEW CITY

  • New York — “the Big Apple” — is an urban experience like none other, full of bustling city lovers, lively nightlife, incredible architecture, world-class art museums and of course Broadway. Your grad won’t want to miss the Statue of Liberty, Empire State Building and Ellis Island; here’s  a fun blog to share with them so they can also be sure to discover the “real” Manhattan off the beaten path. Instagram is also a great tool for finding the newest or most unique restaurants and things to do — check out New York Bucket List and the New York Foodguide . And don't forget about the subways and busses! Suggest they use the Transit app while getting around. It works just like a maps app, but with all the information you need for taking public transit to get there.
  • If your student has never visited our nation’s capital (especially if they majored in political science or government!), now is the time for a visit to Washington, D.C . Many attractions are within walking distance of each other: the Lincoln Memorial, Washington Monument, free Smithsonian museums and more. They can rent a bike or kick back on a double-decker tour bus.

Graduation trip ideas in California

  • Boston, Massachusetts bustles with young, working professionals and will be sure to delight your grad. Popular activities include the Freedom Trail, Faneuil Hall, Fenway Park (home of the Red Sox — be ready to sing “Sweet Caroline”!), the Boston Aquarium, guided Duck Tours — even whale watching!
  • Austin, Texas — known as the “Live Music Capital of the World” — is a fun, vibrant place to visit for people in their early twenties.
  • Seattle, Washington is a coastal city with a hip young vibe, and when the sun is out the views of Mount Rainier and the Olympic Range are breathtaking. Also, every person should visit Seattle’s original farmers market, Pike Place,   at least once.

Useful tool:  The  CityMappers app  is an efficient way to get a bird’s eye view of all the routes one can take to get from point A to B in a busy city. It helps locate the fastest route by subway, train, ferry, taxi, car share, bike share or walking.

SAND IN THEIR TOES

Maybe your graduate just wants to relax. Not a worry in the world if they look into these destinations!

graduation trip planner

  • Maui or Honolulu – Hawaii offers many options for beachy getaways and new cultural experiences, too. Aloha!
  • Diving, snorkeling, beaching, boating…there’s a ton to do in the  Florida Keys located off the southern coast of Florida .
  • Cape Hatteras National Seashore , North Carolina.  Visit the world’s tallest brick lighthouse !
  • Charleston, South Carolina is the oldest and largest city in the state. Rich with southern charm, beauty and culture, this beach town is a perfect vacation destination.
  • Laguna Beach in southern Orange County, California is a popular destination on the Pacific coast.

Graduation Trips Abroad

Graduation trip ideas

Here are useful apps to help them on their journey.

  • Whatsapp supplies secure, reliable messaging and free phone calls to help your student stay in touch with the family from anywhere in the world.
  • Trail Wallet is a great app for travelers keeping a keen eye on their daily budget and expenses. (Only available on the iOS)
  • Airbnb is a great option for locating rentals of private homes and affordable rooms, providing a different experience than traditional hotels or hostels.
  • XE currency,  a currency converter app , is extremely helpful when traveling from one country to the next.
  • TripLingo is a very useful tool for international travelers. It includes a voice translator that instantly helps you communicate in another language, a common phrase book to help with casual and formal speech, learning language tools, a safety feature, tip calculator and more.

STAYING ON BUDGET WHILE TRAVELING ABROAD

Unless your grad can find good hotel or Airbnb deals, hostels are great for travelers on a budget who don’t mind shared spaces. It is also a convenient way for your student to meet other young people from all around the globe and learn travel tips — and even make new friends to venture with! Many hostels post reviews online with insights into safety, cleanliness and price.

RailEurope  and  EUrail  offer deals for students who want to country hop in Europe. If your student prefers to travel by plane, they can find inexpensive flights on  Ryanair  or  EasyJet .

Meals can end up being a large expense, but travelers don’t always have to eat out! Although an authentic restaurant experience can be wonderful from time to time, your student should take advantage of local food markets — less expensive than restaurants plus fun to visit from a cultural perspective.

Trust in Your Student

For many new college graduates, a trip is a rite of passage and a way to test their newfound independence and freedom. Parents are sometimes uncomfortable when their students embark on a journey that takes them farther away from home than they’ve ever been but it’s important to honor their choice if they can make it work financially and with their other responsibilities. Be sure to discuss safety measures and logistics with them, but also trust in your student to plan their trip and deal with the obstacles that may come up along the way.

Relish this moment in time. Remember college move-in day all those years ago? What a long way you’ve both come. Your grad’s journey could not have been possible without your love and encouragement from the start.

Graduation trip in Japan: Everything you need to plan your perfect holiday

by Venese | Jan 7, 2023 | Japan Travel | 0 comments

Graduation trip in Japan Featured Image

Thinking of heading to Japan for an epic graduation trip? 🤩 Here’s everything you need to know to plan the perfect trip for your Graduation trip in Japan!

This blog post has read your thoughts and will tell you why Japan is the ✨perfect ✨destination for your once-in-a-lifetime celebration.

First and foremost, I am sure you (and your parents) will be happy to learn that Japan is consistently ranked one of the safest countries in the world. Its rich culture, history, centuries-old traditions, stunning shrines, temples, and breathtaking wilderness are just a fraction of what the country offers.

Graduation trip in Japan Intro 1

Picture this; you are in Tokyo, Japan’s capital, with your best mates. Walking down the city streets, you witness innovation and modernity at their finest, contrasting retro buildings and Japan’s ancient culture and traditions. You realise you just entered another universe where the options and possibilities are endless, promising you a new adventure every day. Your bucket list may include shopping till you drop and find unique items, spending the night in a retro games arcade, going animal cafe hopping, having the wildest night outs, attending unforgettable events, and fun-filled theme parks, sports games, and seasonal festivals. As the last day approaches, you all have one of those moments you may have thought only happened in movies. You laugh and smile at each other for no reason, maybe shed a few tears because you know you just made lifelong memories and irreplaceable intercultural exchanges.

Graduation trip in Japan Intro 2

Have I convinced you yet? 👀

P.S. Did I mention how heavenly Japanese food is??? 🤤

Rest assured that here you will find the best of both worlds; you can take a relaxing trip to the countryside to recharge your batteries, explore one of Japan’s major cities like Tokyo, gain an international experience, or even do a combination of both! There is something for all tastes and preferences. Whether in Japan’s far north city of Hokkaido, heaven for snow sports enthusiasts and ski resorts, or at the island’s southernmost town of Okinawa with soft sand beaches, azure waters and plenty of aquatic adventures, you will definitely find something that appeals to you and your friends.

Graduation trip in Japan Intro 3

You can begin organising your holiday 2-3 months in advance to reduce stress if there are any last-minute changes or cancellations. For the best experience, we recommend learning a few keywords in the native language and reading up on social etiquette and culture.

Japan 101 👩🏻‍🏫 📚

Before diving into today’s topic, there are a few things to know about Japan.

If you’re concerned about the language barrier, know that while Japanese is the most generally spoken language, notable tourist destinations and infrastructures will have English guides and recommendations. Not only that, but you can navigate anywhere via the Google Translate app, which includes instant translation and support. If you don’t understand what is listed on a menu at a typical Japanese restaurant, aim your phone camera at the page, and it will immediately translate it; the same applies to street signs or directions. Besides, even with the language and cultural barriers, many Japanese people will genuinely try to help you and make you feel welcome in their home country.

Helpful information can also be obtained online through well-known websites, including Japan Guide or our agency, Flip Japan Guide. With several years of living and travelling experience under our belt, our team can provide you with the best tailor-made itinerary and recommendations in Japan. Should you have any queries or need help organising a program, don’t hesitate to get in touch with us via any of our social media outlets. Besides, our first consultation call is free of charge for you to get to know us and our professional services, creating a trusting bond.

Graduation trip in Japan Japan 101 2

Another important consideration is that Japan is still predominantly a cash-based nation, with few establishments taking credit cards. However, this is gradually changing, particularly in the aftermath of the Tokyo Olympics, which resulted in several modifications. Money exchange services are readily available in central districts such as Shinjuku, and you may withdraw cash from convenience stores, notably 7-Elevens, which have ATMs that accept foreign credit cards. Just make sure you notify your bank and authorise international usage!

📝 Noted everything down? Let’s get to planning!

Step 1: What is your purpose? 🎯

Graduation trip in Japan What is your purpose 1

You must first decide on the intention of your celebratory vacation. That encompasses all of your preferences and the things you want to see and experience the most during your trip. You may choose to explore Japan for various reasons, with its diverse food and drinks, entertainment complex, vibrant nightlife, pop culture, stylish and distinctive boutiques, and outlets, discovering more about the country’s cultural heritage, among others.

Graduation trip in Japan What is your purpose 2

One of the biggest reasons for coming to Japan is to eat and drink. Did you know that Tokyo, Japan’s capital, has the most Michelin-starred restaurants on the planet? That should give you an inkling of how outstanding the local cuisine and beverages are here. Not only can you find diners serving authentic homemade Japanese food but also international dishes, from French cafes and Middle-Eastern specialties to all-you-can-eat Brazilian BBQ buffets. Better yet, you will find that bars and restaurants are mostly easily accessible in the restless city of Tokyo. There are also many affordable yet delicious options, including all-you-can-eat/drink menus. That is the best combo, am I right, or am I right? Ultimately, there are dining options to suit every taste, wallet, and diet, with more vegan and gluten-free restaurants launching in major cities.

Pro tip : To save money on food and beverages, dine at or order from local restaurants serving Japanese delicacies via applications such as uber eats or wolt. Alternatively, browse your nearest convenience store for low-cost meals and quirky snacks.

Another probable incentive to visit Japan is its thriving nightlife and pop culture. You may already be aware that Japan is renowned for its console games, novels, comics, and anime, but it is also a popular venue for all things related to music, including live concerts, festivals, cinematography, and so on.

Graduation trip in Japan What is your purpose 3-3

Big cities like Tokyo and Osaka have a plethora of cafes and izakayas (pubs) with motifs, atmospheres, and tasty appetisers to enhance your go-to beverage. There are also hidden pubs and restaurants with mysterious doorways. 🤫  Actually, here at Flip, we conduct unique bar-hopping and nightlife excursions, guaranteeing that you have an enjoyable and unforgettable night out in Tokyo!

On the subject of fun, did you know that the country holds a one-of-a-kind Disney Sea park and Universal Studios in Tokyo and Osaka? If you are a thrill seeker or need that adrenaline rush, try out Fuji Q theme park in Tokyo. Offering wild roller coaster rides and games, it’s one of those places where you surely will laugh out loud and make unforgettable memories with your friends.

Graduation trip in Japan What is your purpose 4-1

Aside from being one of the world’s most secure countries, with Tokyo operating as both a gastronomic paradise and a fashion metropolis, Japanese culture and customs span thousands of years and are truly one-of-a-kind. Along with exploring majestic temples, shrines, and futuristic museums, you can also partake in seasonal festivals, attend a tea ceremony while dressed in a kimono, learn to make sushi, witness a sumo battle or baseball game, and more. A bonus is that these activities will share exciting tales and teach you about Japan’s rich history and ancient philosophies!

Determining your purpose will allow you to know your trip’s direction and what you need to focus on without feeling overwhelmed. It will be a good idea to set up a group chat with your friends to discuss your travels, guest list, dates, and people’s attendance.

Step 2: Budget 💰

Graduation trip in Japan Budget

This is a critical step that will determine the rest of your journey. Your new best pal will be Microsoft Excel, Google Sheets, or a basic notebook with a pen. It is advisable to itemise your expenses, including aeroplane tickets, lodging, food and beverages, excursions, shopping, activities you wish to attend, transportation costs, and other associated fees. If you are vacationing in a group, discuss and clarify all estimated expenditures with your mates to ensure everyone is comfortable and on the same page about everything. Through our travel planning services, Flip can minimise the hassle of preparing for your journey abroad. We also provide a tailored Japan starter kit that includes everything you will need, such as a SIM card, tour guide brochures, and a transit card. In other words, you may calmly study for your final examinations, knowing that all is being arranged for you. 😉

Step 3: How long can you stay in Japan? 🤔

Graduation trip in Japan How long can you stay in Japan 1

The subsequent step is to figure out the timeframe of your stay in Japan, bearing in mind your budget and objectives. Check your agenda and the flexibility of the people you will travel with, as some may only be available on long weekends or public holidays. The length of your trip in Japan will be influenced by your and your mates’ interests and the number of places you choose to visit, alongside your budget and availability.

Graduation trip in Japan How long can you stay in Japan 2

Say you can only take a weekend trip. In such a scenario, we propose exploring one of Japan’s main cities, such as Tokyo, with numerous sightseeing options, traditional and cultural activities, superb dining, and dynamic nightlife. However, if you have the chance to visit Japan for a week, then you can check out our itinerary here. Travelling for the first time in Japan can be overwhelming and stressful to organise as everything will be new and unfamiliar. That is why we advise you to explore one city, including all its wonders and hidden gems, and the next time you visit the country, you can expand your horizons and travel to other nearby destinations. For example, you can see Tokyo on your first-time trip, and the next time, or when you have more time, you can go to Osaka and Kyoto, which have famous landmarks, culinary delights, and untapped treasures to discover.

Step 4: Figure out the best city/cities for you 🏙️ 🗼

Graduation trip in Japan Figure out the best city_cities for you 1

Another consideration is which area and cities/cities better accommodate your interests and bucket-list activities. If you want a location with great entertainment and exciting nightlife, megacities like Tokyo and Osaka are the best bet. If, on the other hand, you want to have a tranquil retreat away from the hustle and bustle of metropolitan areas but still have access to a diverse range of sightseeing and cultural activities, you should consider visiting cities in Japan’s countryside or historic towns such as Kyoto.

Graduation trip in Japan Figure out the best city_cities for you 2

However, as you might have already guessed, the options don’t stop there. If you travel to the north of Japan in Hokkaido, you will be in a winter wonderland, perfect for winter sports and ski resorts, not to mention a grand snow festival held every year in wintertime with fabulous street food and hot beverages.

Graduation trip in Japan Figure out the best city_cities for you 3

On the opposite end of the spectrum, if you want to get some Vitamin D and catch a tan, head to one of Japan’s southern islands, such as Okinawa. Imagine soaking in warm, clear blue waters on coastal beaches, sipping on a pina colada; what more could you ask for? There are also plenty of marine adventures to experiment with, such as scuba diving or white water rafting.

Graduation trip in Japan Figure out the best city_cities for you 4

Likewise, Yokohama is a train ride away from Tokyo if you want to enjoy port cities. It offers scenic views with its lush green park, a giant cup-noodle museum offering you the chance to create your own noodle product, a world-famous Chinatown with mouth-watering street food, and typical restaurants, not to mention cute shopping districts with artsy photo spots for the feed. As the sun goes down, the city is illuminated by fairy lights. Its giant Ferris wheel is surrounded by a lively and colourful theme park, promising you a cheerful moonlit adventure.

If you want a combination of big cities and countryside retreats, getting a J.R. Pass might be worthwhile, allowing you to save on your travels from city to city. If you need further information and are interested in purchasing this pass, Flip can have it all organised for you, ensuring you a stress-free journey.

Step 5: Activities and places to be visited 🗺️

Graduation trip in Japan Activities and places to be visited 1

One of the most critical aspects of planning a trip is establishing what you will do and where you will visit. To that, you probably thought, “you don’t say.” But this is just as important as the previous steps.

Remember that your plans may change once you reach Japan, depending on weather conditions and jet lag, among other factors. For example, you might want to postpone your adventures in Universal Studios Osaka if the day you planned to go forecasts heavy rain all day ☔🤧

Graduation trip in Japan Activities and places to be visited 2

When most people think of Japan, temples and shrines usually spring to mind, but the country has so much more to offer. Aside from seeing the city’s most “touristy” attractions, you may also choose to engage in entertaining activities that most locals love, including singing your lungs out at karaoke or uncovering hidden gems in your neighbourhood’s back alleyways. Equally worthwhile, Japan’s natural beauty deserves a standing ovation. Several cultural traditions are intertwined with seasonal celebrations, such as “hanami,” in which people gather around cherry blossom trees for a picnic. If you fancy hiking and exploring the great outdoors, Japan will not disappoint you with its vast mountains, stunning landscapes, hiking trails surrounded by nature, and other wilderness adventures.

Graduation trip in Japan Activities and places to be visited 3

Residing at traditional Japanese hotels, or “ryokans,” is an excellent opportunity to immerse yourself in the local culture. Some hotels feature hot spring baths on-site and commonly provide authentic Japanese set meals with rich and aromatic ingredients. In matters of nightlife, our weekly excursions will show you to local favourite bars and bustling clubs that you might not have discovered on your own. We will handle all the planning and research, including making reservations and ensuring that you and your mates receive a complimentary drink or shot of your choice at the first pit stop of the night!

The fun does not end there. Introducing the world’s first personalised chatbot tour guide, Flip offers an innovative and entertaining way for you to explore Tokyo city in a game-like format. Within 2 minutes, you can get your ticket directly inside Facebook Messenger. After acquiring your ticket, chat with your virtual tour guide; choose your path and let your chatbot know what you want throughout the tour, and enjoy your adventure! You can find all you need to know about the following themes and available tours here.

Step 6: Logistics ⚙️

As the last step, it is time to conclude everything and focus on ✨logistics✨

There are numerous activities you can do in Japan, as previously discussed; it will all depend on the purpose of your trip and your preferences.

Graduation trip in Japan Logistics 1

When it comes to lodging, Japan provides a wide range of choices. Stay in a “ryokan” for a traditional and authentic experience. Every city will have a one-of-a-kind Japanese hotel waiting for you, and we can assist you in making bookings, as many will only speak the native language. To save on accommodation costs, look into hostels or capsule hotels in your chosen location. Booking an Airbnb is also an excellent alternative for people of different budgets and tastes. There are several unique B&Bs with distinctive atmospheres and architecture. Finally, if you want to pamper yourself, cities like Tokyo have fantastic luxury hotels providing world-class service and superb dining options.

Graduation trip in Japan Logistics 2

Right, now that accommodation is out of the way, you might wonder, what on earth am I supposed to pack for Japan? The short answer is: that it depends on what season you plan to come to and what region you will visit. Suppose you plan to go during summertime, don’t. Just kidding, despite the scorching heat, monsoon rains, and constant humidity, summer in Japan has its perks and seasonal treasures, including its annual traditional festivals and celebrations with fun games and street food, entertaining events, as well as gorgeous nature and scenic views throughout the country. The key is to dress light and wear flowy, airy, and comfortable clothes.

Graduation trip in Japan Logistics 3

In autumn, the weather is brilliant; with a cool breeze and sunlight, you will be mesmerised by the changing leaves, cascading in red, orange, and yellow tones to the ground. For this season, pack both short and long sleeve shirts and blouses, sneakers, pants, and light jackets. As winter approaches, you will need much warmer clothes and layers, including heavy coats and scarves, especially if you plan to visit northern Japan or stay at a ski resort. Lastly, springtime in Japan has fantastic weather, which is not too cold or warm. You will get by with long-sleeved shirts, sweaters, or T-shirts with a jacket or cardigan over them. For a more detailed clothes itinerary, feel free to reach out to us at Flip; we consider all of these details in our travel services.

One of the must-have items, when you arrive in Japan, is a transportation card. That will allow you to easily travel from place to place just like a local. Visitors tend to have either a Pasmo card or a Suica card, which you can buy at any big station in Tokyo or upon arrival at the airport. For certain countries, topped-up transportation cards can be delivered to your home before travelling for an extra fee.

Graduation trip in Japan Logistics 4

Just like transportation cards, you can order your SIM card from companies such as Mobil before arriving in Japan and pick it up at the airport upon arrival. Alternatively, you can have it delivered to your place before your trip. The rates and expenses differ from company to company, so do a little investigation before picking your commuter pass.

Lastly, there is always a lot of confusion about the J.R. Pass. Is it worth it to get one? The answer is that it depends; if you plan to explore different cities in a couple of weeks, the J.R. Pass might be worthwhile. However, if you stay in a town for the entire trip, it would not be a fitting choice.

Having covered all the essentials, if you have any other questions or wish to book one of our services or tours, try out our games, or get a Japan starter pack, feel free to reach out to us on any of our social media platforms, and we will be happy to help!

See you soon in Japan! 🇯🇵

Politics latest: Key voter on Humza Yousaf's future will make proposals to 'help him out of a tight corner'

Rishi Sunak was quizzed over the local and general elections, the Rwanda Scheme and defence spending today on Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips.

If you missed it, here's your chance to catch up on all the key moments - or watch the interview in full.

  • The prime minister tried to manage expectations for Thursday, saying: "Local elections are always difficult for incumbent parties";
  • Asylum seekers travelling across the land border to Ireland was a sign the Rwanda scheme was working as a deterrent, he said;
  • Despite being asked several times, Mr Sunak refused to rule out a July general election;
  • He declined to comment on polling and, when asked if he would have any regrets should the Conservative Party lose, Mr Sunak said: "You're again focused on all this personality stuff."

A little earlier this morning, Rishi Sunak told Sky News that the movement of migrants from Northern Ireland into the Republic of Ireland showed his Rwanda scheme was working as a deterrent.

But the Irish government is to consider legislative proposals next week on returning asylum seekers back to the UK who have travelled across the land border.

Justice minister Helen McEntee will also meet Home Secretary James Cleverly next week, after saying the number of migrants crossing the border was now "higher than 80%".

"I'll have emergency legislation at cabinet this week to make sure that we can effectively return people to the UK," she told RTE.

Ms McEntee added Brexit was responsible for the UK seeing an increase in people seeking asylum.

A spokesman for Irish premier Simon Harris said he is "very clear about the importance of protecting the integrity" of Ireland's migration system.

"Ireland has a rules-based system that must always be applied firmly and fairly.

"In that context, the Taoiseach has asked the minister for justice to bring proposals to Cabinet next week to amend existing law regarding the designation of safe 'third countries' and allowing the return of inadmissible international protection applicants to the UK."

Alex Salmond asked Alastair Campbell to negotiate on behalf of Scotland with the UK government in the event it voted for independence in 2014, Mr Campbell tells Sky News.

The proposal was made when the pair were in Scotland ahead of the referendum, making tributes to Tony Benn, the former Number 10 communications director says.

"If Scotland had become independent, then that would have been a massive, massive thing for the country, so I would have been very happy to do that.

"I would want people who weren't necessarily pro-indpendence to be part of that team."

As Humza Yousaf fights to maintain leadership of Scotland, the Alba Party's Alex Salmond joins Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips.

Meanwhile, Ash Regan, the Alba Party's sole MP and potentially the deciding vote in a no-confidence motion in Mr Yousaf, is expected to meet with the first minister.

Ms Regan will "make a set of reasonable proposals to help him out of a very tight corner", says Mr Salmond.

"Scotland is lucky that somebody like Ash Regan is in that position."

Independence forces should be "cooperating together to try and get independence back as a priority in Scottish society".

Asked if an agreement can be reached with the SNP, Mr Salmond says Mr Yousaf is "in a very difficult position" but he will be in a "listening mode".

"He wouldn't have sacked the Greens from his administration unless he wanted a significant change in direction," says Mr Salmond.

"One possible outcome of this political crisis is there might be a Scottish election."

Earlier this week, Labour pledged to nationalise the railway system.

Shadow health secretary Wes Streeting says the plan is a "reflection of the failure of privatised rail and the absence of competition".

If you bring the franchises back into public ownership as they come up, the profits can be reinvested into better services and fairs, argues Mr Streeting.

"There is already enormous public ownership of our railways, but they are owned by French, German, Dutch and Italian taxpayers, and our profits go into their countries."

"It's time that we had public ownership of our railways so we can reinvest."

Trevor Phillips continues to put questions to shadow health secretary Wes Streeting.

He is about Keir Starmer's pledge to maintain the triple lock, with Phillips raising statistics showing median wealth for those in their early 60s was nearly nine times higher than those in their early 30s.

"I don't buy into that intergenerational conflict argument. We need to give pensioners the reassurance to know that as they have planned for retirement... that Labour will protect the triple lock."

Wes Streeting is asked about the possibility of a July election, which the prime minister has refused to rule out.

The shadow health secretary says: "He should get on with it. We are not just ready, we are, as with the rest of the country, fed up of waiting."

People are "crying out for an opportunity to deliver their verdict on this government and vote for change", he says.

"That's why the prime minister bottled an election earlier this year, that's why he's bottled it now, and that's why he will have to be taken out of Downing Street by his fingernails."

Labour's shadow health secretary Wes Streeting is next on Sunday Morning With Trevor Phillips.

He says Dan Poulter's defection to Labour is a reflection of the "disillusionment of millions of Conservative voters", as well as of a "changed Labour party" because "only Labour can be trusted with the NHS".

Mr Poulter defended and carried out NHS reforms under the Conservative government.

Rishi Sunak's defence spending increase is "Trump-proofing" the UK, should the former president return as American leader in November, says CNN's chief international anchor Christiane Amanpour.

She says it is also indicative of the fact that all Ukrainian allies will need to put themselves on more of a war-footing.

Alastair Campbell adds Labour is in the same place on defence spending, and he believes both party leaders should be putting foreign policy at the heart of the next election.

Labour "understand they have to be very strong on defence", he says.

But this is boxing the next administration in because "there is no money", says former Number 10 communications director, Sir Craig Olive.

"These are major spending decisions and they stop you being able to spend on other things,"

The prime minister is asked whether - if he loses the next general election - he will have any regrets.

"You’re again focused on all this personality stuff. I'm focused on delivering for the country.

"What I'm doing is getting up every single day and working my hardest to deliver for people on the things that matter to them and matter to me.

"That's what we're doing: significant reforms to our welfare system to support people into work, because that's good for them, because there's dignity and purpose and hope in work, and the current system is simply financially unsustainable.

"Massive investment in our defence, because the world we're living in is more uncertain.

"A landmark piece of legislation to get our Rwanda scheme up and running to stop the boats, a tax cut worth £900 next week."
