MANATEE ENCOUNTERS

Eco adventure airboat tour, kayak & sup rentals, scallop adventures, about fun 2 dive.

Welcome to Fun 2 Dive Manatee Tours where we specialize in five-star small, semi-private, and private manatee snorkeling tours. We are open daily, year-round.

We conduct tours to swim with manatees in the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge. Tours are conducted from stable boats with heavy duty ladders, where we enter the water to encounter wild manatees in their natural habitat.

In 1983, the Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge was established in Kings Bay to specifically protect the Florida manatees that consider this area their home. King’s Bay is fed by 40 natural springs, which maintain a constant temperature of 72 °F (22 °C) — a temperature that the Manatees love and need.

OVER 3000 FIVE-STAR TRIP ADVISOR REVIEWS!

destin florida manatee tours

Ryan and Jessica were great to tour with, extremely knowledgeable, and went out of their way to look for manatees further away from the crowds when possible. We saw several manatees and a few calves with their moms. Fun 2 Dive staff are very friendly and respectful to the environment and the animals which I hope we all learn from in the years to come. They also take excellent photographs, so you can leave your camera at home.

destin florida manatee tours

Just went on our first trip out to see the manatees. Captain Jason and guide Bree were amazing and so patient. The knowledge they both shared made the trip magical. If you come to see manatees I would definitely go with Fun 2 Dive. The entire staff was awesome and worked together to ensure we all had great tours and made memories to last a lifetime.

destin florida manatee tours

This was worth the money. We visited in the "off season" for manatees and were a little worried we might not find one. However, our guides knew all the best places and we were in the water for over 2 hours within a few feet of them. The equipment provided was like new and we were given helpful instructions on appropriate behavior when interacting with the manatees. We chose the 6 people or less in a group option and I would say the smaller the group had better the experience.

destin florida manatee tours

One of the absolute best experiences we’ve ever had. My dive partner Ryan, and our Captain Jason made this trip one of the best we’ve ever done. They are professional, knowledgeable, and absolutely delightful to be with. Even if you’re not swimming & you just stay on the boat to observe it's a fabulous way to spend a few hours. If you’re ever looking for an exceptional Florida adventure, look no further! We’ll be back!

destin florida manatee tours

I can honestly say this was my greatest experience to date. Dani was very knowledgeable and made us feel comfortable searching for manatees. She took great pictures and made sure our group was all accounted for. Captain Ryan, our boat driver, was very informative about the areas and waters. He knew key spots to dive into. Also had a couple laughs along the way. Top notch service!

destin florida manatee tours

Great staff, super friendly, great with our kids, very knowledgeable, answered all our questions and more! We had a great experience with them, and were able to be out with the manatees for quite a while. They seem to genuinely love their job. We really enjoyed our time with you! Thank you for giving us some great memories.

destin florida manatee tours

Our family of 5 had our own 6 person boat with Megan and Ryan. They found a mother and calf for us to dive with for almost 2 hours! Plus we hit a crystal clear spring. Awesome service and all their equipment was clean and in great condition. Highly recommend them and we will return with 3 kids aged 10, 8 and 5.

Florida’s Nature Coast

Manatees are one of the most incredible, and elusive, creatures found on Florida’s Nature Coast. The first thing you need to know about manatees is that they like to stay warm. They spend most of the year lounging and hunting for seagrass in the Gulf of Mexico and flock to our crystal clear springs to stay toasty during the winter months.

Florida’s springs remain a constant 72 degrees year-round. This may seem cool to us, but it’s just right for manatees. And nobody knows how to locate these amazing creatures better than our expert guides.

We require seven (7) days notification prior to your scheduled date for all our tours. We make a commitment to you; we need the same commitment from you. We ask that you arrive and be on time (30 minutes before your scheduled departure time). This cancellation policy is to give us time to re-sell any seats left vacant and helps us keep our prices reasonable for you. Cancellations Due to Weather for Manatee Tours We do not cancel MANATEE TOURS due to rain or fog, neither will affect your swim or interaction. During the height of the Manatee Season (November – March), the air temperature can drop below freezing, this is not an issue for swimming due to our warm waters maintaining a constant 72 degrees year round, and the protective wetsuit that we provide. We do not cancel for temperature variations either. We do, however, cancel if lighting is reported within the area, or if sustained winds exceed 30 mph. All our tours are performed in a protected bay where weather remains very consistent.

About the Tours

Join our most popular adventure! As we explore Kings Bay, in search of Florida’s favorite resident, The Florida Manatee!

We encourage and answer all of your questions, and we hope to pass our love and knowledge of the Florida Manatee along to all of our guests!

Our store front offers a library of manatee educational materials. We have free handouts from U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service with manatee info and a local map of Kings Bay.

It is a privilege to swim with these majestic creatures, and a wild experience that is unique to Citrus County Florida!

What time are manatee tours offered?

Bird’s Underwater offers public and private manatee tours daily, in Crystal River Florida. The early morning public manatee tour meets at 6am the majority of the year, and 6:30am for a few weeks in the spring and fall as daylight savings time approaches. We also offer public manatee tours at 11am and 2pm daily. Private manatee tours meet daily at 7am and 11:30am.

What manatee tour time do you recommend?

We always recommend the early morning public and private tours for the best experience. Bird’s Underwater is usually the first manatee tour company off the dock in the morning, which means less people and allows for a more personal experience. The manatees tend to be located closer to the springs at this time and concentrated in higher numbers.

How much do manatee tours cost?

Our public manatee tours start at $59.95 and go up to $65 for peak manatee season (November-April). Private manatee tours are $449 for a boat that holds up to six people, larger private manatee tours can be arranged for an additional $75 per person. We offer a 10% military/first responder discount and a 10% discount for groups of 10 or larger. You may find a few cheaper options out there, but we always recommend checking Google reviews before booking. We include wetsuit, mask, snorkel, drinks, and snacks.

Where do the manatee tours go?

There is often a lot of confusion about Crystal River, Kings Bay, and Three Sisters Springs. Kings Bay is located in Crystal River Florida, and is fed by over 30 fresh water springs. Kings Bay feeds Crystal River, which runs for approximately six miles before converging with the Gulf of Mexico. The river used to be crystal clear, but is no longer so, due to salt water intrusion. The springs that feed Kings Bay are where the pictures of the manatees in crystal clear water come from. The most well-known spring in the bay is Three Sisters Springs, and is a constant 72 degrees.

During the colder winter months manatees congregate around these springs in order to regulate body temperature. Our captains and guides are on the water every day, and are going to give you the best experience possible! We would love to have manatees in crystal clear water every day, but this isn’t always the case. We take tide, air temp, crowds, water temp, and experience into consideration and try to choose the best location for manatee viewing. You are welcome to request to go to Three Sisters Springs, but understand we may want to take you to other locations first. We will always do our best to give you the best manatee experience possible!

Where can I stay during my visit to Crystal River?

Bird’s Underwater recommends the Fishbowl house, in Homosassa Florida. This property is just over 15 minutes from our shop, located on the water, and has kayaks included! The rental property  is just around the corner from the Ellie Schiller Homosassa Springs Wildlife State Park, where manatees gather during winter months. Learn more about the Fishbowl Rental by visiting https://www.vrbo.com/12054 .   There are several hotels in the Crystal River area, but most are not located on the water. We always recommend the Hampton Inn Crystal River, mention you are going out with Bird’s Underwater for a 10% discount.

What other services do you offer?

We are a full-service scuba diving training and sales facility and a Scubapro Platinum dealership, one of only 23 Platinum facilities in the Eastern US. Bird’s Underwater offers dive training at all levels! Bill “Bird” Oestreich is the only cave diving, Tri – Mix, and Megalodon Re-breather diving instructor in Crystal River, FL, with over 25 years of technical diving, dive training, and dive exploration conducted in over 5 countries.

Bird’s Underwater also offers kayak rentals and scalloping tours.

  • Our pontoon boats are enclosed in the winter months.
  • We have a dressing room in which you can put your dry clothes on after the tours on the cold winter days. This has become pretty common among the tour guides, but is not offered by all.

Awesome Had an amazing time on this tour! Our group was very small, with only 5 people. Steve was super knowledgeable and friendly. We weren’t sure if we would get lucky bc of all the recent rain in the area and the murky water. However, I think it only took 10 minutes for us to be October 3, 2015

Definitely a do again trip These guys are so great! Our captain, Mike, is excellent. We saw 6 manatees (great for the summer time), and we were able to get to the springs, and on the way back, we saw a spoonbill. So much fun! I’ll definitely be doing this again with these guys. I highly recommend it. Visited September October 3, 2015

Captain Ron and guide Michelle were fantastic. The small group we had offered great interaction with manatees. I was even given a nuzzle by a curious one. Hot coffee getting out of water was a great touch as well.

Thanks to captain Ron and manatee guide Michelle for an awesome once-in-a-lifetime experience! It was truly a wonderful experience. My teenage kids were even amazed at the number of manatees we were able to see and literally play with. A trip we will never forget!!

My friend and I toured with Lauren and Audrey and it was amazing. Our guides were very knowledgeable of the manatees and where to find them and they were funny too. This was an amazing experience. We would definitely do it again.

Once in a lifetime experience. Super cool knowledgable guides, and captain. This is not a cattle boat tour, it’s a small group and they take you to places that other groups don’t go so you aren’t in the water with swarms of people. Highly recommend!

Captain Ron and the whole crew were terrific. Fun, knowledgeable staff that are passionate about what they do and the manatees and their environment. Highly recommend!

Book with Confidence

Jake and Evan were awesome. They were great with instructions and making everyone comfortable. They gave a flash drive at the end with amazing pictures for us to remember which they included. Most tours charge extra for this. The best part was the experience though. They definitely know where to go and the best time. We did the early morning but SO worth it. Slowly but surely we were surrounded by the gentle giants. All very safe and it is something we will never forget! Thank you guys! We will tell everyone!

Evan and his team personalized my trip and went out of their way to make my experience perfect. They provided pictures and other unsuspected amenities to make my day memorable- truly a customer-centric mindset. This set them apart from the other companies offering manatee excursions. Most importantly, I would now consider them friends and will visit them again soon.

We went out with Evan & Jake last week and had a FABULOUS experience! There were 5 in our group (age range 16 - 80) so we were able to rent the whole boat and have a private tour. We lucked out and hit the jackpot in terms of seeing lots of manatees. We were nervous because we weren't able to go out until the 10:15 tour (due to having to drive a distance first), but Evan knew right where to take us and we saw lots of manatees - even an adult and nursing youngster! Evan drove the boat and kept my mother-in-law company (who chose not to swim). Evan shared lots of interesting information with her while Jake hopped in the water with the rest of us. He gave us lots of tips and took pictures. At the end of the tour they gave us a thumb drive with the pictures - included in the price! Evan & Jake are very personable and made it a fun tour four all 5 of us. They are clearly knowledgeable about the area and the manatees and shared lots of interesting information. Their smaller tours are definitely the way to go!

An experience we will never forget! These guys were full of information and got us up close to many different manatees including a mother and calf. They were able to find them away from other groups which was great because it can get a little crowded in places. The guide in the water (and one watching from the boat) was tremendously helpful to spot the manatees and get us right to them. The benefit of having a photographer taking photos in the water is priceless! We have these awesome pictures to look back anytime we want! To top the trip off, we found some dolphins and followed them around and watched them feeding. Recommend these guys 100%! Fyi… they were with another top rated company and went out on their own. I called the other company, they were booked, and they recommended these guys and I’m so glad they did.

This was probably one of my favorite life experiences! We got really lucky with the weather and due to a last minute cancellation, it was just 3 of us with Hina as our guide and Carlos as our captain. We were able to see around 6 manatees, including two pairs of moms with babies. Hina is really knowledgeable and told us lots of great info such as how we could tell that one of the babies was adopted by another momma manatee. She also got great photos for us! I recommend getting an early morning tour, it’s rough waking up but worth the sunrise and the experience! Hina and Carlos did a great job of making it a fantastic morning!

We had a great time on our swim with the Manatees! We liked that the Nature Discovery boats take out smaller groups. Once we got to the springs, there were quite a few other boat and people, but being on a smaller tour gave us more individual attention from our guide and boat Caption. We got to see and swim along side many Manatees. They are super big, and being next to them is an amazing experience. We were provided with wet suits, masks, and snorkels. The equipment was in Excellent condition. The store front where we changed was clean, and they have a cute gift shop. I love that the guide took photos of the experience. I would definitely recommend Nature’s Discovery Manatee Tours!!

For over 20 years, I've wanted to swim with the Manatees. When you've built something up for that long, it has the potential to not live up to expectations. Thankfully for me, it was amazing. The staff made sure it was everything I'd hoped for. They were super friendly. Explained clearly both expectations and what was included. Ample pictures were taken, and a real effort was made to take multiple "$ shots". They were also dog friendly which was huge for us. I loved my experience and will definitely use them again if we ever come back to Crystal River. I really loved Hina, our guide.

Your Family's Gotta Try This: Snorkeling with Manatees in Crystal River

By Lauren Tjaden

When you get up-close-and-personal with a manatee, the first thing that you notice is its gargantuan size. Adult manatees are normally 9-10 feet long and weigh around 1,000 pounds, but they can grow to over 13 feet long and weigh more than 3,500 pounds. 1,000 pounds is the size of the average horse. That’s a big animal—whether you’re atop a paddleboard, in a kayak or boat, and particularly if you’re swimming next to one.

The second thing you notice is how cute they are. A manatee face is akin to something out of a cartoon, with tiny, round eyes and a shrunken, smushed- in version of an elephant’s trunk for a snout—big, soft and grey, complete with a smattering of whiskers. Their profiles are blimp-like, and they have two forelimb flippers they employ to steer and to hold vegetation while they munch on it.

Algae and barnacles cling to their backs, a hint at their speed—or rather, their lack of it. They normally lumber around at about five miles an hour, but have the capacity to motor up to 15 miles per hour in short bursts, should the rare occasion warrant it. They’re gentle beasts with no natural predators, and as they eat more than a tenth  of their weight in food every day, grazing is a focal point of their days.

Meeting these marvelous mammals is worthy of any bucket list, and the Sunshine State makes it easy, delivering a myriad of tours where the beloved manatee takes center stage- from kayaking and stand up paddle-boarding and boat tours to those that offer swimming with manatees.

Here’s your guide to Manatee tours in Florida.

manatee snorkeling adventures in Florida

Swimming with Manatees

Guided tours provide the easiest, safest, and surest way to swim with manatees. Conducted via boat or kayak, tours allow you to get into the water quicker and have a dry place to rest and keep your items.

Crystal River, Homosassa, and the waters of Florida’s Citrus County are one of the rare places in the world where you can have an in-water experience with manatees in their natural environment—and it’s ideal.

Heralded as the Manatee Capital of The World , every winter Citrus County draws between 500 and 1000 manatees to its springs, which provide a natural warm water refuge.  Even in the warm summer months, up to 100 manatees remain in the springs.

Tour companies on Kings Bay in Crystal River operate under Special Use Permits issued by the U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service’s Crystal River National Wildlife Refuge , the sole Refuge in the United States solely dedicated to protecting critical habitat for manatees.

Tour guides are trained to make sure this beloved, threatened species is treated with the utmost care and respect, and all swimmers on manatee tours learn their “ Manatee Manners ” before ever getting in the water.

Check out these tour guides and outfitters that will take you on a once in a lifetime adventure to swim or snorkel with the manatees in the wild.

* If you prefer to keep your feet dry, most if not all of these tours offer manatee viewing as well as swimming.

What Is The Best Month To See Manatees In Crystal River?

The Crystal River manatee season starts during the months of November and ends in March and it is a good reason to see manatees in the area.

It is the best time of year to see manatees in the river because of the cold weather and lower water temperature during these winter months when manatees seek only refuge in the warmer waters of Crystal Springs.

How Much Is A Crystal River Manatee Tour?

The cost of a Crystal River manatee tour can vary depending on the tour operator and the package you choose.

If you’re looking for an affordable option, The OG Manatee Snorkel Tour costs around 60-70$ for an approximate duration of 3 hours.

If you want to spend more time exploring Crystal River and its surrounding wildlife, the Manatee Adventure, Everglades Style Airboat ,  and Crystal River Manatee Swim or Boat Ride is your best choice costing around 100-150 $ each.

How to Swim with Manatees in Florida (+ Where to Go & FAQs)

Planning to swim with manatees in Florida ? This post will give you everything you need to know from where and when to go, to practical tips to plan your trip!

One of the most exhilarating experiences in Florida is swimming with Manatees. These giant underwater creatures also known as sea cows are incredibly charming, friendly and above all adorable to watch while they slowly and swiftly swim in the warm waters.

Beyond watching them, you can also swim with them in their natural habitat, and luckily for you, Florida has the place for that.

Every winter, usually from mid-November to late March, thousands of Manatees migrate to Florida in search of warm waters of 72 degrees and above in the state’s warm springs and rivers as they can’t survive in cold waters below 68 degrees.

If you want to get up close and personal with them, this post will give you the complete guide to swimming with Manatees in Florida.

From the best time to swim with manatees in Florida and the best place to swim with them to the best tours to take. We’ve got all the information you may need and more!

How to Swim with Manatees in Florida

Continue reading to discover everything you need to know about swimming with manatees in Florida plus answers several to FAQs.

Best Time of the Year to Swim With Manatees in Florida

sea cow in crystal river

One of the most commonly asked questions is when to swim with manatees in Florida.

As we’ve already seen, Manatees make their way to the waters of Florida during the winter months (from mid-march to late November) with the peak season being between December and February to escape the cold waters in other parts of the country.

After the winter season, a few Manatees stay in Florida, specifically in Crystal River due to its year-long warm temperatures but if you want an almost guaranteed chance of seeing them underwater, winter is the best time to visit and definitely the best time to swim with these gentle creatures.

Best Time to Swim with Manatees in Florida

how to swim with manatees in Florida

Winter months may be the best months to swim with manatees in Florida but what exactly is the best time to go?

While any time is ok during the winter months, some times of the day are better than others in terms of interacting with manatees at their best and beating the crowds.

If you’re planning to swim with manatees in Crystal River, make sure you go early in the morning. In the morning, manatees are super active and playful and it’s pretty exciting to see them interact with each other or even come close to you.

After a long morning of playing and eating, chances are high that many will be tired and they’ll be less active in the afternoon, albeit even asleep.

Also, the springs are usually crowded on weekends and school holidays so the best time to go to avoid the huge crowds is during the week.

In brief, the best time to swim with manatees in Florida is in the morning hours of weekdays during the winter months .

Best Place to Swim with Manatees in Florida (Legally and Ethically)

Crystal River is the best place to kayak with manatees in Florida.

Though there are many places to see Manatees in Florida , not every spot allows swimming with them.

In fact, in the entire USA, there is only one place where you can legally swim with Manatees and that is Crystal River .

Located about 68 miles north of Tampa, Crystal River is dubbed the capital of Manatees since it receives the greatest number of Manatees which account for over 800 every winter though there are some that stay all year long due to its consistent temperatures of 72 degrees throughout the year.

How to Swim with Manatees in Crystal River

upclose photo of a manate in crystal river

Now that you know the best place to swim with Manatees in Florida, it’s time to find out exactly how to swim with Manatees in Crystal River.

Crystal River is famous for hosting Florida manatees but not every spot on the river is the same. The best area to swim with manatees in Crystal River is near Kings Bay where there are manatee sanctuaries.

Swimming close to manatee sanctuaries means that manatees can leave the closed-off areas (usually marked by ropes underwater) and swim freely toward you without any coercion due to their curiosity.

Though you can go on a solo swimming adventure, as long as you stick to just the areas that allow swimming and you can find your way around, the best way to swim with manatees in Crystal River is by joining a guided tour.

Actually, we don’t recommend going on a Manatee swimming adventure alone, especially if you’re swimming with manatees for the first time.

With a guided tour, your tour guide will direct you to the best spots to swim with the manatees, give you guidelines to follow while in the water and some tours even offer all the equipment you’ll need.

Best Tours to Join to Swim with Manatees in Florida

With many operators, it can be hard to choose one, so to help you have an amazing experience, below are the swimming with manatees in Florida tours we recommend.

man snokerling in crystal water

If you’re going with any of the above tours, then you won’t need to pack a wet suit and snorkeling gear but there are other things you’ll need.

  • Swimsuit: It makes changing into a wet suit easy and you don’t want to directly wear shareable wetsuits. You can check this one out if you want to get a new pair.
  • Travel Towel: For obvious reasons. We love this microfiber one as it’s easy to travel with and it dries fast.
  • Reef-friendly sunscreen with SPF 50: This sunscreen will protect your skin without endangering the underwater ecosystem.
  • Swimming Noodles: These will help you float with ease to be able to see the Manatees. You can buy yours here .

Where to Stay in Crystal River

Manatee Sanctuary Park is the best place to kayak with manatees in Florida.

To choose your base, these are the hotels we recommend staying at while in Crystal River.

Holiday Inn Express Crystal River, an IHG Hotel: Located less than a mile from Kings Bay, this is the perfect hotel to stay at for a swimming adventure with manatees.

>> Click here to check rates and availability

NEW Cozy House 5 Min Three Sisters Springs: If you want to base yourself as close to manatee swimming sites as possible without compromising on the quality of your stay, then opt for this vacation home . The home is beautiful and it puts you about 5 minutes from Three sisters springs on Crystal River.

The Port Hotel and Marina: This hotel is perfect for those who want to be right by the water. While the rooms and facilities are nothing to write back home, it’s the location that sets it up.

Rules and Regulations to Follow When Swimming With Manatees in Florida

Manatees in Florida

It’s legal to swim with manatees in Crystal River but it comes with several rules and regulations to make sure that these federally protected creatures that were once endangered are not harmed.

To make sure you have a great experience and avoid getting a huge fine and in some cases jail (only if you don’t follow the regulations), here are the things you should know before snorkeling with manatees in Florida.

Stay cool when Manatees approach you: Manatees are such curious creatures that will approach you as soon as they see you. But don’t worry, they’re harmless.

Some can go as far as even touching you with their forelimbs. If this happens, just stay cool and don’t make rigorous movements as this will scare them away.

Don’t flap when swimming with manatees in Crystal River: Manatees do not like to be disturbed and since you’re in their natural habitat, making noise by flapping or kicking will scare them and eventually chase them away.

Instead, try to swim calmly and float as much as possible. The wet suit should help you with this. You can even take swimming noodles if floating naturally is not easy for you.

person touching a manatee in crystal river

Don’t pinch, harass or even box the manatees: This might seem like common sense but we’ll still mention it.

Manatees are the loveliest underwater creatures and it’s mean and jerky to want to harm them just to meet your curious unkind senses. Also, don’t stretch your arms out to try to lure them! If they feel safe around you, they’ll come close by themselves.

Don’t cross into the protected areas that aren’t supposed to be swam in: When swimming with manatees in Crystal River, you’ll notice ropes on the ground that separate the gazetted areas for manatees from the other parts.

The gazetted areas are sanctuaries where manatees go when they don’t want to be bothered. Think of them as the zen place they go when they don’t want to have any human interaction or to even sleep.

If they want to interact with you, they’ll leave the sanctuary area and come to you. Crossing into these areas can lead to a huge fine and in some cases jail time.

Blue Spring State Park is where to kayak with manatees in Florida.

Don’t feed the Manatees: Another thing you should know when you swim with manatees in Florida is that feeding them is not allowed. In fact, it can put their health at risk if you feed them something they’re not supposed to eat.

Don’t chase the manatees: Another thing that could easily land you in trouble is trying to chase and outswim these creatures.

If they swim away, just let them be and wait for others to come to you. It’s not a competition to see if you can swim faster than a manatee. Just swim slowly and observe the manatees without causing any trouble.

Wear a wet suit: Besides helping you float, a wet suit, preferably one between (3mm-5mm) will keep you warm. Even if the water is not too cold in Crystal River, it’s still cold enough to make the experience less enjoyable without a wet suit.

There Are Two More Reasons Everyone Loves Destin, Florida!

This post has been refreshed with two new reasons everybody loves Destin, FL, as well as expanded points on current reasons. Destin is considered one of the many jewels within the Sunshine State, and for good reason. Have fun visiting!

You're In The Iconic Florida Panhandle

One main reason people adore Destin is because it's one of the many jewels within the Florida Panhandle. When coming to the Sunshine State, it's worth understanding where the Panhandle is and why it's so important. Destin is tucked at the northwest tip of Florida, in the area known as the Panhandle. The weather is nicer here throughout the year, often being cooler than areas in Central and South Florida. On any given day, someone can expect to be more comfortable outdoors in Destin than, let's say, Miami Beach. Destin's northern location also allows for easy access to nearby states, like Alabama, Georgia, and South Carolina.

  • Located in the Florida Panhandle
  • Better average daily temps than Central and Southern Florida
  • Easy access to other bordering states

The Florida Panhandle consists of countless beachside cities and towns, including Destin, Pensacola, Navarre, Panama City Beach, and Tallahassee. This area is known for milder summers, easier access to other states, and tends to be less crowded than places like Miami Beach or Key West.

Henderson Beach State Park

Henderson Beach State Park , with its refreshing environment and mile-long sugar-white sand beach, is unquestionably one of Destin, Florida's main draws. The beach distinguishes itself from other Destin beaches due to its composition of pure Appalachian quartz. Winter is one of the best times to come see Florida, as the weather is near perfect, and the prices for hotels and property rentals are *typically* lower. The Fascinating History Of The Town

The origins of Destin's nickname as the "World's Luckiest Fishing Village" are just as interesting as the moniker itself. Originally a "little fishing community" on the Gulf of Mexico, the town of Destin was named after a fisherman named Leonard Destin. Captain Destin carried with him a sense of identity and place from his native New England. For this reason, a miniature town was built that resembled a New England colonial village. In fact, the Henderson State Park Inn, often regarded as Destin's finest resort, is only one of several structures and hotels that has managed to preserve the city's historic character and ambiance.

The 15 Best Things To Do In Sarasota, Florida

Powdery white sand beaches and crystal-clear blue water await.

destin florida manatee tours

Things To Do

Where to stay.

Robbie Caponetto

For a nostalgia-stirring vacation with friends, Sarasota—a fanciful town on Florida’s scenic Suncoast —has easy appeal for everyone. The Suncoast encompasses about 150 miles along the Gulf of Mexico, and this stretch of shore offers unmatched terrain, with crystal waters as aqua blue and bright as a chlorinated pool, sand as soft as powdered sugar, and almost constant sunshine. The town of around 55,000 is positioned at the prime place for active outdoor enjoyment, whether you’re interested in beachcombing, kayaking, boating, or sipping a frozen cocktail at a sand-floored tiki bar.

Here are the 15 best things to do in Sarasota, Florida, on your next trip.

Go to Bayfront Park

Take a morning bike ride or stroll along Bayfront Park, which juts out towards the water and borders a marina of yachts and power boats. You’ll likely catch a yachtie emerging barefoot from below deck. Thanks to amiable year-round weather apart from the heat, some choose to live part-time (or full-time) on their boats.

letsplaysarasota.com , 5 Bayfront Dr, Sarasota, FL 34236

Head Out onto the Water

To see the best of Sarasota, boating is second-to-none. Key Sailing offers sailing lessons, along with private charters aboard their 41-foot Morgan yacht, complete with refreshments, chocolates, and music. Choose a morning sail to look for dolphins and other wildlife, or book an evening cruise to catch sunset at its peak. Sarasota native Jan Soloman runs the local charter business with her husband Tim. The couple met in high school when they were both in sailing classes.

keysailing.com , 400 Quietwater Beach Rd, Pensacola Beach, FL 32561

Enjoy the Gorgeous Public Beaches

For land dwellers, Sarasota has plenty of shoreline to go around—35 miles of it, to be exact—spread across the mainland and its six barrier islands. Lido Beach is just a quick jaunt from the popular shopping district St. Armands Circle, South Lido Beach is a quiet stretch best known for manatee spotting on kayaks, and famed Siesta Beach on nearby Siesta Key has been named best beach in America by Tripadvisor.

Go Shopping in St. Armands Circle

With over 100 stores, St. Armands Circle is a walkable district where you can find souvenirs, trinkets, gourmet snacks, and anything else that might tickle your fancy. Explore the shops, dine in the sidewalk cafes, and relax in the lush tropical gardens.

starmandscircleassoc.com , 300 Madison Dr, Sarasota, FL 34236

Go Manatee Spotting on Kayaks

As we've mentioned, South Lido Beach is best known for manatee spotting on kayaks or paddleboards, and you can check with Paradise Adventures Sarasota for tours and rentals. The tours provide direction for those who want to learn more about the area and be led to the best parks and beaches for spotting wildlife, but rentals let you enjoy at your own pace.

paradiseadventuresfl.com , 190 Taft Dr, Sarasota, FL 34236

Spend the Day in Siesta Key

Take a car to Siesta Key for shopping, and see its unique sand composed of almost 100% pure quartz crystal, a rarity even among the world’s most beautiful beaches—making it worth the short drive. Head to Sunset Point, a Siesta Key favorite for sunset viewing, which is located at the north end of Siesta Public Beach.

Visit the Ringling Museum

Sarasota is home to the official state art museum of Florida: the John and Mable Ringling Museum of Art. Established in 1927 as the legacy of Mable Burton Ringling and John Ringling, it offers impressive collections of art (organized in different complexes to be explored), as well as beautiful architecture, tropical grounds, and views of Sarasota Bay. The Museum of Art, Bayfront Gardens, and Glass Pavilion are free to the public on Mondays.

ringling.org , 5401 Bay Shore Rd, Sarasota, FL 34243

Head to the Myakka River State Park

One of the best ways to see your fill of the region's flora and fauna is at this state park located a short drive outside of Sarasota. It is home to cranes, alligators, gopher tortoises, the elusive Florida panther, and hundreds of other species, many of which are threatened or endangered. It’s the oldest state park in Florida and contains a 12-mile stretch of untouchable protected Myakka River. Hikers dip into shady trails lined with thick brush, a favorite path being the Myakka Canopy Walkway, which offers a rare peek into the ecosystems—both minuscule and massive—within the swampy marshland.

floridastateparks.org/myakka-river-state-park , 13208 State Road 72, Sarasota, FL 34241

Bring Your Pup to a Dog Beach

For those with a furry friend who wants to get in on the fun, Brohard Paw Park features a fenced dog play yard that leads to the only beach area in Sarasota County where dogs are allowed. Nearby is South Brohard Park, providing beach access for humans only, including boardwalks, benches and showers.

venicegov.com , 1850 Harbor Dr S, Venice, FL 34285

Where To Eat (and Drink)

Take advantage of the local seafood.

A tasty perk that comes with Sarasota’s location near world-class deep-sea fishing is that you’re never far from fresh seafood. No need to gussy up for old-school joints like Walt’s Fish Market Restaurant & Tiki Bar and Owen’s Fish Camp , where you can mingle like a local and hear live music.

Have Dinner in Downtown Sarasota

In downtown Sarasota, explore a distinct and locally sourced scene. The owner and chef of Indigenous , Steve Phelps, uses his own fine-dining restaurant to help advocate for more sustainably minded aquaculture and makes his case with seasonally focused dishes like Green Curry Fish Dip. Nearby, Selva serves up coastal Peruvian cuisine, while farm-to-table staple Boca always features a lively atmosphere.

Grab a Rooftop Cocktail (and Views)

Sarasota also happens to have quite the appreciation for breezy rooftops that let you drink in every last drop of the salt air and sunset vistas. At the Art Ovation Hotel , the rooftop pool and bar offer easy access to scenery, but Sage , with its 360-degree views, is hands down the best spot in town for a proper dusk happy hour. The revolving door of craft drink concoctions, including zero-proof options for guests who do not wish to partake, showcases creative ingredients such as house-made poppy limoncello, hibiscus spheres, and smoked cinnamon.

Stay at a Amenities-Filled Resort

BREAKING NEWS

3-year-old boy with autism found dead at resort, Orange County deputies say

These are the 15 best beaches in florida. do you agree.

Anthony Talcott , Digital Journalist

U.S. News has released its list of the best beaches in Florida for 2024, picking from 15 along the Sunshine State’s coastline.

To determine which ranked on top, researchers used a variety of factors, including atmosphere, convenience and aesthetics.

Recommended Videos

For the second year in a row , the top-ranked beach year was Siesta Key in Sarasota County. Many other beaches from last year’s ranking made the top 15 again, though some fallen behind, while others have pushed ahead for a higher spot.

Read below to see where each of Florida’s top-ranked beaches placed — and why.

1. Siesta Key — Sarasota County

“Popular among couples and families alike, this fun-filled barrier island sits off the coast of Sarasota on the Gulf of Mexico. Considered one of the most beautiful beaches in the world, Siesta Beach features miles of white quartz sand, crystal-clear water and a lively atmosphere, with nearby dining, shopping and nighttime entertainment. The picturesque Crescent Beach, another Siesta Key standout, is ideal for travelers seeking relaxing walks on soft white sand. Meanwhile, Turtle Beach, known for its shelly sand, is a great spot for a quieter atmosphere, easy parking and beachcombing.” U.S. News: A World Report, "Best Beaches in Florida for 2024"

2. Anna Maria Island — Manatee County

“Though it’s located less than 40 miles south of St. Petersburg, Anna Maria Island seems much more removed from other beach hubs. Locals and visitors alike appreciate Anna Maria Island’s “Old Florida” feel, evident in its quaint lodgings, beachside eateries and well-preserved main street, Pine Avenue. Of course, this 7-mile barrier island also boasts the soft white sand that is intrinsic to Florida’s central Gulf Coast. Amenity-filled Manatee Public Beach and Coquina Beach are popular with families, while the off-the-radar Bean Point Beach calls to couples with its gorgeous sunsets.” U.S. News: A World Report, "Best Beaches in Florida for 2024"

3. Delray Beach — Palm Beach County

“Nicknamed Florida’s ‘Village by the Sea,’ Delray Beach appeals to travelers who want the friendly atmosphere of a small town and the entertainment options of a large city. The Wakodahatchee Wetlands and Morikami Museum and Japanese Gardens are top attractions, but nobody could blame you for heading straight for the beach. Located near several shops and eateries, Delray Municipal Beach is ideal for active pursuits like snorkeling and paddleboarding. Meanwhile, Atlantic Dunes Park offers a quieter beach experience in a tranquil natural setting. When you’ve had your fill of the beach, stroll down palm tree-lined Atlantic Avenue for art galleries, upscale shopping and vibrant nightlife.” U.S. News: A World Report, "Best Beaches in Florida for 2024"

4. Santa Rosa Beach — Walton County

“Stretching along Highway 30A on Florida’s northwest coast, Santa Rosa Beach is the place to go for sugar white sand, emerald water, top-notch dining and local art galleries and boutiques. Though this area is gaining popularity, Santa Rosa Beach has retained a quieter vibe than Panama City Beach or Destin. Favorite spots include Grayton Beach State Park and Blue Mountain Beach, where vacationers can swim, sunbathe, explore sand dunes, bodysurf and more. When hunger strikes, the food trucks in the neighboring town of Seaside make for a fun and easy meal option.” U.S. News: A World Report, "Best Beaches in Florida for 2024"

5. Palm Beach — Palm Beach County

“Whether you’re window shopping along Worth Avenue, practicing your swing at one of the area’s world-class golf courses or lounging on sparkling white sands, Palm Beach has something to offer every type of traveler. This glitzy resort town, located about 70 miles north of Miami, is filled to the brim with upscale restaurants, spectacular Gilded Age mansions and sophisticated art galleries. Head to the town’s Municipal Beach to sunbathe and swim, or hit up Phipps Ocean Park for shelling and snorkeling.” U.S. News: A World Report, "Best Beaches in Florida for 2024"

6. Destin — Okaloosa County

“Families flock to Destin for its white sand beaches, gorgeous Gulf waters and frequent sunshine. With plenty of exciting activities to occupy your time, this Florida mainstay has everything you need for a memorable beach vacation. Keep in mind that temperatures, visitor volume and room rates peak in summer. Travelers will find popular stretches of sand like June White Decker Park and Crystal Beach by the town’s resorts and vacation rentals, but for a more laid-back atmosphere, sunbathe on Henderson Beach State Park’s Appalachian quartz sands. Beachgoers may even spot dolphins, sea turtles and other critters during their visit.” U.S. News: A World Report, "Best Beaches in Florida for 2024"

7. Marco Island — Collier County

“Located about 20 miles south of Naples and accessible via two bridges, Marco Island entices visitors with its unique mix of high-end resorts and unspoiled habitats. Boating is a popular pastime here, and seafood lovers will find mouthwatering meals available at many local eateries. Of course, Marco Island’s spotless beaches are some of the best on the Gulf Coast. Tigertail Beach Park attracts vacationers looking to observe wildlife, search for seashells or rent kayaks, while South Marco Beach – populated with resorts and condos – offers plenty of space for sunbathing and swimming.” U.S. News: A World Report, "Best Beaches in Florida for 2024"

8. Fort Walton Beach — Okaloosa County

“Head to Fort Walton Beach on Florida’s Panhandle for its laid-back beaches, deep-sea fishing, golf and attractions fit for everyone in the family, from aquariums to parks. Stretches of sand worth exploring include the beaches of Okaloosa Island, which feature a fishing pier, a boardwalk and stunning sunsets. For a less crowded beach day, John Beasley Park, located on the east side of Okaloosa Island, offers clean white sand backed by grassy dunes, restrooms and designated picnic areas.” U.S. News: A World Report, "Best Beaches in Florida for 2024"

9. St. George Island — Franklin County

“Located about 75 miles southwest of Tallahassee, St. George Island is a beloved retreat for relaxation seekers. With zero high-rise buildings and pristine white sand, this beach town is one of the few inhabited barrier islands found off of Florida’s Gulf Coast that remains relatively untouched. Head to Dr. Julian G. Bruce St. George Island State Park to swim, kayak, fish and camp – and keep your eyes peeled for wildlife like dolphins, turtles and pelicans. Or, spend time at St. George Island Public Beach, a dog-friendly option with restrooms, a playground and picnic facilities.” U.S. News: A World Report, "Best Beaches in Florida for 2024"

10. Clearwater Beach — Pinellas County

“Clearwater Beach’s gentle water and white sand attract relaxation seekers in droves. Following a few hours of swimming or lounging, beachgoers can play volleyball or go rollerblading or biking on the adjacent Beach Walk promenade. For more kid-friendly fun, Clearwater Beach also offers the Clearwater Marine Aquarium, which focuses on marine life rescue and rehabilitation. Then, visitors can make their way to Pier 60 to watch a breathtaking sunset and participate in evening craft fairs and entertainment. Because the 1,080-foot pier is adorned with various lights, anglers often come here at night to fish.” U.S. News: A World Report, "Best Beaches in Florida for 2024"

11. Amelia Island — Nassau County

“If you’re in search of a relaxing beach destination with old-world charm, consider Amelia Island. Situated about 30 miles northeast of Jacksonville, Amelia Island features 13 miles of beaches, including Amelia Island State Park (where you can bike, fish or look for wildlife) and Main Beach Park (with a playground, an outdoor skate park, picnic tables, volleyball courts and more). Don’t forget to book a horseback riding tour for a fun way to explore the area. When you need a break from the beach, play a round of golf on one of the island’s championship courses or enjoy a stroll beneath its live oak trees.” U.S. News: A World Report, "Best Beaches in Florida for 2024"

12. Sanibel Island — Lee County

“After sustaining devastating damage from Hurricane Ian in 2022, Sanibel Island has reopened many of its main beaches, renowned for their relaxing vibe and natural beauty. The island, which is connected to Fort Myers via a 3-mile causeway, has resiliently restored serene spots like the sprawling Bowman’s Beach (which features a playground, picnic area and prime shelling opportunities) and Lighthouse Beach Park (beloved for its iconic lighthouse that withstood the storm). Though the island lost many of its hotels, stores and restaurants during the hurricane, several local businesses and a handful of hotels are now welcoming visitors as the island continues to recover.” U.S. News: A World Report, "Best Beaches in Florida for 2024"

13. Key Largo — Monroe County

“Located in the upper Florida Keys, Key Largo is best known as one of the world’s top dive destinations, with stunning reefs, shipwrecks and underwater statues. However, travelers don’t need to strap on a scuba tank to enjoy this island paradise. Vacationers can head to John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park to lounge on the sands of Cannon Beach, named after its 17th-century cannons, or the palm-lined Far Beach, known for its shallow waters and serene setting. For more elbow room, consider a stay at a top-rated resort with a private beach.” U.S. News: A World Report, "Best Beaches in Florida for 2024"

14. St. Petersburg — Pinellas County

“The Sunshine City offers the best of both worlds. Visitors will find miles of relaxing shorelines and an urban cityscape – perfect for those looking to escape to the beach without feeling disconnected. Plus, the city holds the world record for having the most consecutive days of sunshine, making it an ideal place to lounge on picturesque white sands. Active travelers also won’t want to miss St. Pete Beach’s shores: The area’s Pass-a-Grille Beach is an easygoing spot for activities like paddleboarding and deep-sea fishing. There’s also Shell Key Preserve (accessible by ferry), which offers few amenities but ample opportunities to spot shorebirds while sunbathing.” U.S. News: A World Report, "Best Beaches in Florida for 2024"

15. Islamorada — Monroe County

“Travelers journeying from mainland Florida through the Florida Keys will find Islamorada after Key Largo but before Marathon. Made up of six islands, this tranquil paradise is best known for its top-notch sport fishing and saltwater fly-fishing conditions. Since there aren’t many public beaches in Islamorada, beachgoers should consider an oceanfront resort with beach access for a guaranteed spot on the sand. Meanwhile, adventurers can take a boat trip or kayak to the Islamorada sandbar, about a mile offshore, to snorkel, swim and relax in the shallow water.” U.S. News: A World Report, "Best Beaches in Florida for 2024"
