Why Bali is an Amazing Yoga Destination

The plethora of wellness centers and spas in Bali lead the island to become one of the world’s leading wellness destinations and yoga hotspots. Whether you’re looking to meditate, practice yoga, or rejuvenate your mind and body in the spa, Bali is the ultimate destination for wellness retreats.

Another reason wellness, yoga, meditation and spiritual retreats in Bali are so popular is because of the stunning scenery and vibrant spiritualty the island offers.

Bali is also known as ‘ the island of the Gods ‘ due to it’s deeply spiritual culture, incredible temples, lovely people and long history of healing which makes it such an amazing place to practice yoga.

Bali is a land of healing, spirituality, and rich cultural traditions that date back centuries. Much like India , the birthplace of yoga, Bali follows the Hindu religion and offers a plethora of opportunities to heal and dive deeper into the practice of traditional yoga.

Beyond the yoga mat, Bali’s numerous workshops, holistic healing therapies and ceremonies are sure to pique your curiosity and expand your understanding of wellness culture.

For solo female travelers Bali’s thriving yoga community offers a warm and welcoming environment. The locals are friendly and the island is clean, safe and genuinely lovely making Bali the perfect place even for first time solo retreat.

Best of all, many yoga retreats in Bali provide a complete vacation package that includes daily yoga sessions, delicious healthy food, meditation classes, spa treatments, sightseeing tours and cultural activities, making them exceptional value for money.

The Best Places for Yoga in Bali

While you can find retreats all over Bali, the most popular destinations for yoga in Bali are Ubud and Canggu.

Ubud : The cultural, spiritual and artistic center of the island. Located inland, Ubud also offers numerous vegan cafes, workshops, healing therapies, yoga teacher trainings and is home to the Yoga Barn – the most well known of all the yoga studios in Bali.

Canggu : If you’d prefer a beach yoga retreat or fancy learning how to surf, Canggu is a great choice. The beaches of Canggu are famous for their surf spots and there’s a lively yoga and surf scene with plenty of hip cafes, boutiques and nightlife nearby.

Ulu Watu is another area of Bali with a growing yoga scene and famous surf breaks. Located at the southern tip of Bali it’s home to the beautiful Ulu Watu temple where you can witness a traditional kecak dance.

The Islands: If you are dreaming of a blissful island escape consider a yoga retreat on neighboring small islands like Nusa Lembongan, Nusa Pendia or the Gili Islands.

Bali is a popular tourist destination and can get quite busy. If you want to escape the crowds and really immerse yourself in traditional Balinese culture and lifestyle there are also some great ashrams, yoga and spiritual retreats like Balitrees located away from the touristy areas.

Yoga Retreats in Bali

How to Choose the Best Bali Yoga Retreat for You

With so many incredible yoga and wellness retreats in Bali it can be difficult to choose the right one for you. Here’s a few things to consider when choosing a yoga retreat in Bali.

Level and Style of Yoga

While most Bali retreats can cater for beginners by offering modifications for the more advanced poses it’s important to be honest with yourself about your level of experience to ensure you find a retreat most suitable for you wherever you are in your yoga practice.

If you are a beginner or it’s your first yoga retreat , you’ll probably feel overwhelmed and not have a great experience if you end up on a yoga teacher training retreat. Whereas if you are more experienced yogi a retreat aimed at beginners might not be challenging enough for you.

Some yoga retreats focus on just one style of yoga whereas others may offer the classes in a variety of styles. When choosing a retreat consider whether you prefer dynamic styles like Ashtanga and Vinyasa flow or more relaxing yoga styles like restorative and yin.

Some even offer the opportunity to try ariel and acro yoga and yoga nidra. Bali even has it’s own style of yoga called Watukaru. If you’re not sure go for a multi style or traditional Hatha yoga retreat.

Beach or Jungle Location

Bali is a bigger island than most people realise so choose your location wisely. If your dream yoga holiday involves being immersed in the jungle choose an inland retreat near Ubud, or if you dream of relaxing on the beach and learning how to surf then look for a beach yoga retreat.

Also be aware that some areas most popular tourists have more busy, crowded, party areas, not ideal for a relaxing yoga retreat but it can be fun and convenient to be close to the nightlife and sights – it really depends on what you are looking for.

Accommodation, Meals and Facilities

Whilst facilities in Bali are generally of a very high standard the type of accommodation, facilities and meals included can vary.

Sometimes accommodation on budget retreats in Bali will be in shared rooms or dormitories whereas luxury yoga retreats in Bali will normally offer beautiful accommodation in private rooms or villas, swimming pools and a spa.

Food is another important factor to consider, most wellness retreats in Bali will serve healthy, delicious, organic food, but many only offer vegetarian or vegan meals. Some do not serve alcohol either, so check that the food meets your requirements.

Other Included Activities

Yoga holidays in Bali are often great value for money depending on what’s included in your retreat package. In addition to daily yoga and meditation classes many also include some spa treatments and massages, surf lessons, sightseeing excursions, airport transfers and cultural activities like cooking classes and offering making.

Always check what’s included in the retreat package. Some budget retreats may not include all meals and spa treatments, additional activities and airport transfers might be charged extra. So you might find an all inclusive retreat is actually better value for money.

Bali is a beautiful island so it’s really worth exploring. If you want to book extra activities, tours and transfers a good place to do this is on Viator or Get Your Guide .

Check the Reviews

While some yoga retreats may look beautiful it’s important to check the reviews from previous guests so you know what to expect. Be aware that reviews on a retreats website or social media pages might not tell the whole story so its best to check reviews on an unbiased website like bookyogaretreats or bookretreats before you book.

Tips for Planning your Trip to Bali

Once you’ve found the perfect Bali yoga retreat it’s time to start booking your flights and planning your trip to this magical island. Here’s some essential travel tips to help you get started and don’t forget to read our essential Bali Travel Guide too.

The Best Time to Visit Bali

Bali is a tropical island so it’s warm all year round with the temperature being between 82°F to 90°F (28°C and 32°C) all year round. The more mountainous areas, like Ubud, feel slightly cooler.

There are two distinct seasons in Bali that you should know about and take into account when planning your trip.

Bali’s dry season generally runs from April – September and is the best time to visit Bali for beach days, sunbathing, hiking, diving and most outdoor activities. The dry season is the main tourist season with July and August being the busiest, peak tourism months. Beginner surfers are also better off visiting Bali in the dry season.

The wet season is from November to March with the frequent tropical downpours that give Bali is luscious, tropical, greenery. The wet season is a good time to visit Bali to enjoy cheaper prices at the spas and luxury resorts and escape the crowds but of course it’s not the best time to practice yoga outdoors. It doesn’t rain all day and some areas like East and North are not so wet, whereas areas like Ubud see the most rain. Christmas and New Year are also busy times.

Traveling to Bali

Flights: Ngurah Rai International Airport (DPS) also known as Denpasar International Airport is very close to the beaches in the south and is Bali’s only airport.

There are cheap, direct flights to Bali from most Australian cities. If you are traveling from Europe or North America there are frequent connections in Asian hubs like Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Bangkok.

To reach Bali from Europe or America you’ll probably have to fly to one of these cities and then change so why not break the journey and have a few days stopover and explore somewhere like Singapore on the way.

Find the best flight deals on WayAway . It’s a new flight aggregator that gives you cashback! It not only finds you the cheapest prices, but also the most convenient flight times, connections and layovers.

Visas: Most nationalities can get a 30 day Visa on Arrival at the airport which costs USD 35 . This can be paid in cash in several major currencies or by card. Check most up to date entry and visa requirements on the official Indonesia tourism website . If you want help applying for your visa use a trusted agent like ivisa. You can extend the visa by a further 30 days by visiting the immigration office in Denpasar.

Airport Transfers: Many of the best yoga retreats in Bali offer airport transfers as part of the package so check with the retreat first but don’t worry if not. You can book a safe and convenient airport transfer with Viator to get your trip off to a smooth and stress free start.

Transportation: The best way to get around Bali is by taxi or private driver. You can also rent a scooter or motorbike but Bali’s roads are narrow and busy so only do this if you are experienced and confident driving in Asia.

You can use Grab and Gojek to book car and motorbike taxis at affordable prices. You can also order food delivery with these apps.

The best way to book flights, trains, buses and ferries in Asia online is on 12 Go Asia . If you are heading to the Nusa islands or Gili islands book your boat here .

Internet: Most places have wifi and once you arrive in Bali it’s easy to get a local sim card to stay connected while avoiding high roaming changes. If you need an esim check out Airalo

Travel Insurance: Don’t forget to take out a comprehensive travel insurance policy that covers you for cancellations, sickness or injury. Make sure it covers yoga and all the other activities you plan to do on your trip.

We have annual multi trip plans with Heymondo . As we are frequent travellers this is the most convenient and value for money option. They also offer short and long trip insurance and cover Covid-19 too.

What to Pack: Take light weight clothing, swimwear and a light rain jacket for Bali’s tropical climate. You’ll also need a sarong for visiting temples. Check out our essential yoga retreat packing list for more packing tips and our list of recommended books to read on a retreat .

Another thing you can do to help prepare for your Bali yoga trip is to read our article about the commonly used Sanskirt yoga words you need to know and tips if it’s your first retreat.

Bali is one of the most popular yoga destinations in Asia and even the world.

Predominantly Hindu, the island has become a yoga Mecca for those wanting to dive deep into their practice or attend a yoga teacher training in Bali in a paradisiac setting.

In recent years, it has also attracted many expats and digital nomads due to very good reasons, besides many spiritual visitors from neighboring Australia and all over the world.

rice terraces in Bali - yoga retreats Bali

The weather in Bali is beautiful and going in the warmer season means you’ll get plenty of natural sunlight and fresh air.

It’s still super nice during the other months, but you might have to deal with rain showers more frequently.

Nature and Culture

From ancient temples to lush rainforests and a stunning coastline, there are many reasons to choose one of the Bali yoga retreats on this list.

The Island of the Gods has a rich culture and history , so it’s a great option if you’d like to learn more about its past and immerse yourself in the local culture and spiritual practices.

Canggu beach - Bali retreats yoga

If you’re a beach lover or (aspiring) surfer, it features a gorgeous coastline, warm waters, and waves you can surf all year round (and for all levels). You can even join a surf and yoga retreat in Bali and combine the thrill of surfing with the serenity of yoga.

Some yoga retreats will take you on excursions around the island, while others will offer additional activities for an extra cost.

Bali is also a great place for foodies and those who want to try something out of their comfort zone.

Most of the retreats on this list offer nourishing and delicious vegan or vegetarian meals, but there are also plenty of great local restaurants where you can grab a bite to eat!

Balinese food - Bali meditation retreat

Bali is quite affordable which makes it easier to stay for a longer period without compromising on comfort and quality.

From luxury yoga retreats to budget-friendly resorts, there are options for any budget and price range.

Best Time to Go on a Bali Yoga Retreat

The best time to attend a Bali yoga and meditation retreat is between April and October.

Exploring Ubud, Bali in August 2022

This is the island’s dry season and you won’t have to worry as much about dealing with rain every day. During the day, you’ll experience temperatures between the mid-80s and low-90s.

If you don’t mind going in the off-season or don’t want to deal with as many tourists, then I recommend booking your trip outside of these months for lower prices and a more authentic experience.

Attending a Yoga Retreat in Bali? Don’t Forget Travel Insurance!

As with any other kind of physical activity, joining a yoga retreat is not without its risks. While yoga is generally safe, accidents and injuries can happen anywhere and, if you’re anything like me, you’ll want to be prepared for the worst, especially when you’re in a foreign country.

That’s why travel insurance is so important and you should never leave home without it! I use and recommend  SafetyWing travel medical insurance  for travelers, remote workers, and nomads.

They cover overseas medical assistance in case of accident or illness, a wide range of sports and activities including yoga, travel delay or interruption, lost checked luggage, emergency medical or political evacuation, natural disasters, and personal liability, at very competitive prices.

After a wonderful experience in 2017 I decided to come back and experience the magic of this yoga retreat once more. And i’m so happy i did! The daily very good yogaclasses, the amazing food, very kind staff, interesting activities, massages and offcourse the most beautiful swimmingpool. I enjoyed all of it!

Georgia W

This week was so much more than I could have ever hoped for. The teachers were incredible, the food was great, I learnt so much and improved my practice, the classes were also a lot of fun. Everyone is so friendly and I had the best time with my group. I couldn’t have wished for more. If you’re thinking of booking, know that it’s not a decision you’ll regret ! Thank you to the incredible team, I’ll 100% return.

Shanti Toya is an amazing hidden gem. I had such a magical, inspiring, peaceful and nourishing week there surround by wonderful people. The food is delicious and the surroundings are stunning. The teachers and all the crew at Shanti Toya are kind, helpful and brilliant at what they do. This place is better than any rehab, hospital, meds, therapy, diet or anything you could possibly ever try for improving your mental health. It is healing in its purest most gentle form. I was the best version of myself that I have ever been when there. It changed my life forever, please go.

Lasma C

Shanti Toya is incredible place! I was looking for yoga retreat and found so much more! ♥️ There are yoga classes 2x a day with various instructors and various yoga styles which gives a deep understanding about yoga and the teachers are helping to reach higher understanding of Yoga itself. The place is surrounded by beautiful greens, it’s like a hidden gem, there are no noises besides from the nature, which is amazing 😻 The rooms are quite basic but that gives extra touch as we are not there for physical pleasure but rather (...)

Mary

I spent a week in this beautiful ashram and everything was simply perfect. The location is quiet and peaceful, yoga classes were excellent and the food was delicious. Hosts were very welcoming! It seems like people who come there are also very special, kind and friendly. I made lots of friends. I really had a great time and learned a lot! Can’t wait to return ❤️

Corey R

This was literally my first yoga retreat experience in my LIFE and I couldn’t of asked for a better first intro. From the food, to the staff, to the rooms, the pool and the setting, everything was amazing. I really loved how they immersed us into the culture, we got to make jamu and learned how to make offerings. I felt like I was part of the family even after just a few hours being that and I got to make a life long “brother” after meeting a Widi. Can’t wait to go back again and visit when I’m in Bali in 2021! 😍

Meredith G

This place was exactly what I needed! Would highly recommend. Kalina and the staff are so genuinely kind and welcoming. The yoga is fantastic. The food is is all vegan and so delicious. The scenery is so beautiful and serene, the perfect place for meditation, healing, and relaxation. I got to do and see so much as well as learn so much about Balinese culture. I also met some incredible like minded people which I think made the entire experience. No one was was cliquey or gossipy, everyone got along with one another and it was just all good vibes.

Retreat Testimonials

I cannot describe in words how much the counsellors and the whole team has been supportive through this journey to my true inner self. The team are highly qualified in their areas, very experienced and understanding. They gave me a strong foundation in guiding me with trust, kindness and love during the process. It was also very helpful for me that I could learn the right tools to handle my emotions and my mind and my physical symptoms. Before I never could imagine how powerful the tools of meditation, yoga and others in combination could be. I am so grateful for the help I received here. I can tell honestly that it was one of the best decisions I ever made in my life. I never thought it is possible, that I ever feel the way about life, like I do now.

I spent a month at Mercure Resort Sanur that had a big impact on my life. Amazing wellness and retreat centre & beautiful people in Sanur. I recently went on a wellness retreat at Mercure Resort Sanur and had treatments from the wellness center as well. Firstly, the wellness center is so peaceful and I felt so welcomed by all the staff and tutors at Mercure Resort Sanur. They cooked me delicious(!) breakfasts and lunches each day, I felt right at home by the end of the retreat. The sessions were all expertly led and really interesting and the retreat was really tailored to my needs. Thank you so much Mercure Resort Sanur! You’ve given me great memories that I will hold onto for a very long time.

Really gorgeous location. Amazing staff with lots of knowledge at both the wellness center and accomodation.

The best choice I could have made! Professional, well organized and so much fun.

Relaxation And Rejuvenation In The Island Of The Gods

— Go with the flow.

by Georgie Darling

The unspoilt black sand beaches of the north, the vibrant surf culture of the south and the rejuvenating rice fields weaving between them in the centre: Bali’s most contrasting neighbourhoods may have strong differences, but there’s one thing they all share a love for: yoga retreats.

The Island of the Gods knows what’s what in the world of eco-chic, sustainable yoga resorts. From the Canggu yoga retreats combining vinyasa flows with cooking classes and surf trips to the Uluwatu yoga retreats, punctuated with sunrise sessions overlooking the spectacular Indian Ocean — Bali is home to them all.

Why Book a Yoga Retreat in Bali?

It’s difficult to put into words the energy that Bali holds until you actually step foot onto the island. Known as the Island of Gods, Bali has become a mecca for yoga, not because yoga is a part of the culture here (though the island’s dominant religion is Hinduism, where yoga stems from), but because Bali is known as one of the most healing places on the entire planet.

And if healing isn’t your thing, don’t let that stop you from booking a yoga retreat in Bali as you’ll have over 600 choices of retreats to pick from.

Spirituality & Healing

There are ley lines that span across the globe, connecting some of the most incredible places on the planet such as Stonehenge and the Great Pyramid of Giza, just to name a few. It’s where these lines meet that there are great energy vortexes, with Bali being where some of these lines meet.

bali yoga travel and wellness retreat

Bali is not just known for healing, but also for being a very spiritual place. It pulls in a great number of travellers who seek answers, exploration and beauty, many of whom choose to stay.

Regardless of whether you want to participate in a yoga retreat for healing or not, Bali is home to a number of top yoga teachers and studios from around the world. Pair the incredible talent of the teachers, along with the jaw-dropping nature of Bali, the spiritual significance of the island, and the energy vortex and you have one of the top yoga destinations in the world.

Beaches, Nature & Scenery

Want to practice yoga surrounded by rice fields? Bali’s got that. Or maybe you prefer to overlook the ocean, Bali’s got yoga retreats with those views too.

Without a doubt, you can’t go wrong with choosing a yoga retreat in Bali. It will completely uplift and transform your yoga experience. I know so, I even did my yoga teacher training in Bali!

READ MORE: Why You Should Consider Yoga Teacher Training (Even if You Don’t Want to be a Yoga Teacher)

On a retreat you may be served exceptional local cuisine. Or you may opt to venture into town and explore the abundance of trendy cafes that serve of mix of traditional Balinese dishes and Western meals. Vegetarian and vegan options are around every corner here and there is something truly tantalizing for everyone’s taste buds in Bali.

Budget Friendly

You can indulge in the luxurious side of life in Bali for a fraction of the cost compared to places in North America and Europe. A week-long retreat here won’t set you back far, especially if you opt for a basic retreat that delivers yoga, but gives you plenty of free time to roam and explore.

But even if you crave being totally pampered after with a schedule fully made for you, there are options galore that are budget-friendly for all. Simply take your pick!

How to Choose a Yoga Retreat

While I’ve gone and done the research for you and picked out the top 10 yoga retreats in Bali based on my extensive knowledge of Bali and yoga plus what retreats are most popular, picking the perfect yoga retreat still comes down to what you prefer.

Follow these simple tips for picking a yoga retreat and you’ll be guaranteed a spectacular and relaxing time in Bali.

Pick your retreat based on how many nights you want.

Remember, all retreats will give you a certain amount of days, but oftentimes retreats do not include a full-day on the first or last day of the retreat. Look closely when booking as you will most likely get fewer days than you want and could opt for a longer retreat.

Check for inclusions.

Not all retreats are created equally. Many are all-inclusive, many are not. When looking at retreats in your budget be sure to check and see which meals are included, if any, along with what type of accommodation you want. Most retreats listed will include the shared room option when most will offer private rooms, but always for a higher price.

Know how much structure you want.

Some Bali yoga retreats have you to do your own thing and give you the option to attend yoga classes whenever you want. These yoga retreats often are not private retreats and typically allow outside visitors or those who regularly practice at the studio come in for classes.

Other yoga retreats have a lot of structure and are often a small group of people that come in for a week who practice, eat and go on excursions together.

If you prefer to be alone and don’t want the company, go with a less structured option. If you’d love to meet friends or interact with others, opt for a more structured option.

This is the key to beating jet lag if you’re heading away

Behind The Scenes with Ellie Cole

The Indonesian island is famous for surfable waves and yoga retreats. But, as one stressed writer discovered, a host of more holistic options could work magic on your life.

The first time I escaped to Bali, it was after a serious case of work burnout . But before I knew it, my ‘just a few months’ of vacation respite turned into two years living on the Indonesian isle.

During my soul-enriching time there , I enthusiastically explored all manner of holistic health and wellness experiences to help heal my mind and body from the stress I had arrived with. I embraced everything from ecstatic dance (yes, it’s a thing), Theta healing, Kambo (aka frog medicine), foot reflexology, colonics, fasting, group psychotherapy, lymphatic drainage, Melukat (water purification ceremony), aerial yoga and bone setting. You name it, Bali has it – and I’ve likely tried it.

Yet my most profound experience happened by accident. A few months into my stay, I injured my shoulder and a friend recommended I visit a UK-trained osteopath called Phil (no last name necessary, Eat Pray Love-style ).

I presumed Phil would be offering me a standard chiropractic treatment, but instead I stumbled into a new world of body-mind therapy that would become integral in my healing journey.

3 silent retreats that are trending now

A practitioner of somatic therapy (a burgeoning area of psychotherapy where body and mind are treated as one integrated whole), Phil developed his own method from decades of expertise across osteopathy, psychotherapy and alternative healing.

The catalyst for it? He noticed clients would return with the same persistent issues or pain despite ongoing treatment, and it led to a realisation that focusing on the body or mind separately has limited success – an emotional component needed addressing in order for people to truly heal.

In a nutshell, somatic therapy sessions – beloved by high-profile names from Laverne Cox to Gabby Bernstein – are tailored to an individual’s needs using techniques like sound, breathwork, osteopathic adjustments, shaking, stretching, trigger point therapy, vocal expression, qi gong movements and physical tools like a tuning fork.

Sightly apprehensive, I put myself into Phil’s well-trained hands. The first session began with a chat about how I was feeling (normal, so far) before I clambered onto the massage table. I was asked to use deep, slow breaths to calm my nervous system while Phil ‘sense checked’ my body, inquiring if any areas felt ‘stuck’ or painful. He held, moved or adjusted while I communicated what I was seeing or feeling. Sometimes I saw colours, which were often accompanied by an emotion, belief or memory.

There's more to Bali than zen yoga retreats and great surf breaks.

Afterwards, I left feeling lighter, calmer and more centred. I went to see Phil many times and as trust developed between us, the work deepened and our sessions felt like guided journeys that allowed me to meet unconscious parts of myself, working through everything from repressed pain to anger and grief.

Travel often leads to life-changing experiences, and I found a way of knowing myself more deeply than I could’ve ever expected when I packed my bags for Bali. I’ve since left Ubud, but this profound work travels with me.

Now when I feel stuck or find myself dissociating with things like mindless social media scrolling, I know a good dance, stomp and limb shake is all that’s needed to process emotions stored or ‘trapped’ within my physical body. While it may sound woo and slightly Goop-y, it worked for me. And when it comes to wellness, that’s all that counts.

Mandarin Oriental, Bangkok, Thailand

As Bangkok ’s first urban spa, The Oriental Spa at the Mandarin Oriental is considered an authority on Thai healing traditions. The journey begins with a meditative boat ride across the Chao Phraya River, where the secluded spa resides inside a lovingly restored teakwood building. In this tranquil space, ancient practices and local ingredients power the comprehensive menu of massages, facials and scrubs, while yoga, muay Thai and tennis help travellers stay fit on the go.

Opened in 2020, RAKxa has made waves along the Chao Phraya River near Bangkok thanks to its innovative approach to wellness. This integrative retreat blends state-of-the-art medicine with ancient Thai traditions to address health concerns. Guests can choose from plans targeting goals like detox, weight management and gut health, or create a custom journey based on assessments. They have access to a wealth of experts and services, including IV vitamin drips, cryotherapy, DNA analysis and more.

Lush jungle surrounds, luxurious suites with private pools, an army of resident health experts. In Bali , a destination that’s chock full of wellness retreats, Como Shambhala Estate stands out from the pack. A favourite among celebrities, the retreat provides personalised wellness “paths”, such as stress management, rejuvenation, cleansing or Ayurvedic healing, alongside a calendar full of yoga, Pilates, outdoor activities and cultural rituals. All the while, dine on bright Southeast Asian dishes packed with nutrients.

Long before wellness resorts entered the mainstream, The Farm at San Benito was pioneering its holistic brand of healing in the jungles outside of Manila . Upon arrival at this pioneering retreat, guests undergo non-invasive tests. Based on the results, The Farm at San Benito’s integrative physicians craft bespoke journeys that include meditation, yoga, spa treatments, hydrotherapy, medical services and nutritional advice. Alternatively, guests can simply enjoy a rejuvenating escape with morning sun salutations, workouts at the “jungle gym” and award-winning cuisine.

Why your next wellness trip might lead you into a cave

Underground retreats from Oregon to Thailand now draw travelers with yoga classes, meditation workshops, and sound baths.

Woman alone in a cenote, Mexico

Caves have been central to the human experience, whether as early forms of shelter or as sacred religious sites. But eventually humans crawled out, stood up, looked around, and realized the outside world held more creature comforts. Lately, wellness caves have travelers heading back underground seeking darkness, quiet, solitude, and perhaps even spiritual enlightenment.

These subterranean escapes can be rustic or luxuriously stylish. Some, like the Sky Cave Retreats in Oregon or the Dark Retreat Earth Domes in Thailand , are man-made, carved into the ground, or constructed by piling earth upon stone. Others were formed naturally, like the famous Dungeshwari Cave near   Bodh Gaya   in India’s Bihar state, where a young Buddha allegedly took shelter. While caves were once seen as a last resort, now they’re often used for recreational purposes, like yoga classes, sound baths, or meditation. What ties these spaces together is a sense of retreating, reflection, and resetting.

Caves as sacred and social sites

Religious and social groups have long gathered in caves . In Central America, Maya people went to caves to leave offerings for gods, consume mind-altering substances, and, sometimes, make human sacrifices. Tibetan Buddhist “dark retreats,” which last from three to 49 days, involve advanced practitioners sitting in caves, meditating on their mortality. Christians in ancient Greece and Rome likely used their vast maze of catacombs for private worship and to escape prosecution.

(Inside the Irish “hell caves” where Halloween was born.)

Travelers probably won’t commit to spending weeks underground. But those hiking Dochula Pass in Bhutan can take a side trail to tiny, open-faced meditation caves and spend a few quiet minutes reflecting on the green forests and rugged mountains. A 20-minute drive from Tulsa, Oklahoma , the Forest of Peace retreat invites visitors into its “Cave of the Mothers,” a storm shelter converted into a meditation space.

“There is a curiosity about sensory deprivation practices that can alert us to something greater in ourselves,” says Tim McHenry, chief programming officer at New York City’s Rubin Museum of Art , a Himalayan culture center that has hosted dark meditation in one of its cavelike spaces. “It is so rare that we experience being in the utter dark.”

A blue, cave like room that opens at the top with a ladder.

Caves to cure what ails you

Spending time in the dark might be good for your health, too. “In the 1960s, scientists began looking into REST [Restricted Environmental Stimulation Therapy],” says Scott Berman, the founder of Oregon’s Sky Cave Retreats. “They started to find that it was really beneficial for soothing the nervous system and for relaxation.”

Research finds that spending time in pitch black can be particularly helpful for specific mental health issues or vision problems . Since its popularization in the 1960s (largely credited to German anthropologist Holger Kalweit), darkness therapy has been successfully used to treat symptoms of bipolar disorder,   chronic fatigue syndrome, and migraines. More recent studies have seen positive effects for people with amblyopia (aka “lazy eye”).

That’s led to dozens of dark retreat centers opening across Europe. Now the therapy is catching on in North America, thanks in part to the high-profile endorsements of NFL player Aaron Rodgers and actress Rosario Dawson. For professional athletes and creatives, darkness retreats can provide a much-needed escape from the hum and chatter of public life. “Sitting on that couch all day or scrolling on your phone, that is death,” said Dawson after completing her four days at Sky Cave. “This retreat made me recognize that I need to have such a deeper loving relationship with my body.”

“The underground teaches us to respect mystery,” argues author Will Hunt in his 2019 book, Underground : A Human   History of the Worlds Beneath Our Feet .   According to Hunt, his excursions into subway tunnels, catacombs, and caverns led to the realization that “not everything should be revealed, not all the time.”

(This Slovenian cave is a real “house of dragons.”)

How to take a cave retreat

At Sky Cave Retreats, visitors stay overnight (or for weeks) in 300-square-foot underground suites built into the hillside from concrete blocks and metal rebar, furnished with beds, floor pillows, rugs, and wood-burning stoves. These “caves” are warm, lightproof, and soundproof. “That’s something many people don’t expect, that there will be no noise,” says Berman. “It gives people a visceral experience of timelessness. You enter into an unchanging reality.” Staff are on hand to deliver meals (which are consumed in darkness) and each suite is equipped with a private bathroom, a flushing toilet, and a bathtub for quiet, hot soaks.

Samaya Meditation Center in Indonesia offers a similar set-up, encouraging practitioners to book three full days in their simple yet cozy dark room. Plant-based meals are provided, and while the rooms aren’t quite soundproof, each guest is given earplugs upon arrival.

Of course, one need not commit several days in order to feel some inner shift. It’s possible to visit an Himalayan salt cave for an hour or rent a room carved into the side of the Tres Cuevas Mountain via Summit at Big Bend , in Texas . A group session of cave yoga at Olentangy Caverns in Ohio provides an active way to enjoy the underground, and many parks offer private, guided cave tours. Whether for an hour or a month, visitors will now find a variety of ways to dabble in darkness.
