Horizon Forbidden West guide: Fast Travel

In this Horizon Forbidden West Fast Travel guide, we’ll explain how to travel to or between Campfires and the item you’ll need to do it.

Horizon Forbidden West Fast Travel is straightforward enough, but has a couple of nuances that take a minute to understand. Fast Travel in Horizon Forbidden West moves you to Campfires that you’ve previously visited. Sometimes this costs you a Fast Travel Pack item, but not always.

Horizon Forbidden West Fast Travel

You need to have visited a Campfire to unlock it as a Fast Travel destination. You don’t have to save at the Campfire, but you do have to get close enough that you might as well save anyway. There are a ton of Campfires throughout Horizon Forbidden West ’s world, and it’s worth unlocking any you come across, just to make zipping back and forth across the map easier.

At (almost) any point while you’re exploring the world, you can open your map, hover over an unlocked Campfire, and hold down the right trigger to warp there. (Fast Travel is disabled while you’re in Quests or Cauldrons, or while you’re falling or gliding.) Fast Traveling this way costs you one Fast Travel Pack .

If you’re already at a Campfire, you can hit Circle to Fast Travel for free. That will take you to the map, where you’ll be able to select another Campfire to travel to. This does not consume a Fast Travel Pack — it’s free.

One quick note: If you’re zoomed out on the map, you can often select just the Settlement icon instead of zooming all the way in to the Campfire itself, but this works the same way as just selecting the Campfire.

Getting More Fast Travel Packs

There are two ways to get more Fast Travel Packs: buying them from Traders or making them yourself. Almost every Hunter (weapons vendor) you come across will sell you a Fast Travel Pack for 25 Shards .

Horizon Forbidden West guide: Fast Travel

That’s not cheap, though, so it’s often better to make your own. Use left or right on the D-pad to select the Fast Travel Pack, and then hold down on the D-pad. This opens up a crafting menu.

Crafting a Fast Travel Pack requires 10 Ridge-Wood and 3 Wild Meat . You’ll find Ridge-Wood pretty much everywhere, but you’ll have to hunt Wildlife for the Wild Meat. You’ll loot it from animals like Wild Boars or Peccaries .

Where to Get Fast Travel Packs in Horizon Forbidden West

Petar Petrov

The map in Horizon Forbidden West is absolutely huge. Reportedly, it’s approximately the same size – if not bigger than the map of Horizon Zero Dawn, which we believe is between 4.8 and 5.2 actual miles.

It’s fair to say that to go from one side to the other – be it for quests, to sell items, or purely for exploration purposes, it will take you some time – even if you aren’t doing it all on foot.

So, what’s the best and fastest way to get around? By fast traveling. The developers of Horizon Forbidden West – Guerrilla Games – have ensured plenty of different ways to move around the large map.

So, how do you fast travel in Horizon Forbidden West? Well, one of the ways is by using a campfire (there are many of those scattered around), but that is far from optimal. I’ve found that every time I need to go somewhere far, there isn’t a campfire nearby and I have to physically walk to it.

It’s a hassle, especially when I’m in a rush and need to move to a particular place quickly. As a result, my preferred way of fast traveling is the second option – by using the fast travel option from the menu.

However, to do that, you’ll need Fast Travel Packs. But where do you get fast travel packs from? In this short article, I’ll go over where to get fast travel packs easily so you can be on your way without having to look around for a campfire.

However, before we get into that, I want to share with you some key information you need to know in order to make the most out of your fast travel packs.

Important Information to Know When Using Fast Travel Packs

golden fast travel pack forbidden west

Using the fast travel packs is as easy as clicking the big square button in the middle of the controller, selecting a location, and pressing R2. Then, all you do is simply confirm and you’ll be on your way to your desired destination.

A single fast travel pack can take you from any point on the map to any point on the map. Now, there are a few exceptions where you can’t use the fast travel pack. These are when you’re trying to fast travel to an unexplored region despite it being on the map, any quest locations, regions that are populated by certain types of mobs, merchants, and other similar.

Now, you can use the fast travel packs to travel from anywhere on the map to a location that you’ve been to – such as Chainscrape, a campfire that you’ve discovered, and other random ruins (not all).

You can also use the fast travel pack to get out of dangerous situations. For example, if it gets way too heated and you’ve run out of healing herbs and potions and you want to get out before you get eliminated – you can simply pause and use your fast travel packs to escape to any location on the map.

How to Get Fast Travel Packs in Horizon Forbidden West

golden fast travel pack forbidden west

Now that you know where and when you can and can’t use the fast travel packs in Horizon Forbidden West, let me show you how you can get them.

Currently, there are two ways you can get fast travel packs. The first one is from merchants that sell them. On my way to following the Orb’s Path, which was during the Death’s Door main quest, I came across a merchant on the road.

golden fast travel pack forbidden west

He sold me 20 fast travel packs. He was the first merchant that I came across who sold them so I considered myself quite lucky considering I only had a single fast travel pack experience prior to meeting with him. Now, I use it everywhere I go.

You can find him located about halfway down the Orb’s Path (see map below for visual reference).

golden fast travel pack forbidden west

In order to get fast travel packs from the merchant though, you need to trade him some metal shards. A single fast travel pack costs 25 metal shards. If you don’t know where to find metal shards , just go around and kill machines. They will drop you some nearly all the time. Besides that, you can also find them in chests.

Despite me finding this merchant in the middle of nowhere, I’m sure you can find plenty of those in the bigger locations all over the map. So, do keep an eye out and keep all those metal shards safe until you find the right merchant.

How to Craft Fast Travel Packs

golden fast travel pack forbidden west

The second way you can get your hands on fast travel packs is by simply crafting them yourself. To do that, scroll through the different items you have using the d-pad, and hold the down button on the d-pad. Then, it will ask you if you want to craft fast travel packs.

To do that, simply hold X for as long as you need to and fast travel packs will start crafting. Do note that to craft fast travel packs, you’ll need 10 Ridge Wood and 3 Wild Meat per fast travel pack.

How to fast travel in Horizon Forbidden West and Burning Shores

Horizon Forbidden West has a huge world, so you’ll need to know how to fast travel a lot.

Aloy swimming under water in Horizon Forbidden West

Published: 08 Mar 2024 11:27 AM +00:00 Updated: 08 Mar 2024 11:27 AM +00:00

Horizon Forbidden West encourages you to travel in many different styles when you're exploring the world and playing the game, such as gliding, zipwire or even grappling around the map. However, at times you’ll need to know how to fast travel - especially if you can do it for free!

Firstly, you’ll want to make sure your PC meets the Horizon Forbidden West's system requirements . You should also check out the Horizon Forbidden West's machines list to ensure your weapons are strong enough to help defeat the robots along the way.

How to fast travel in Horizon Forbidden West

Based on the PlayStation version, before having access to fast travel in Horizon Forbidden West, you need to survive through the first missions. You'll have to get to the mission 'To The Brink' to unlock this feature. When you’re on the map looking to fast travel, hover yourself over your preferred campfire and press the R2 button to activate this.

Horizon Forbidden West allows you to fast travel for free, unlike Horizon Zero Dawn where you had to purchase or craft the golden fast travel pack to be able to teleport for an unlimited amount of time. In Horizon Forbidden West, all you have to do is be within 20 meters of a campfire. These are found in settlements and located at the shelters. However, you can only fast-travel from campfires if you have previously visited them.

Campfires are where players can save the progress of their game, so you may as well hit save whilst you’re there before teleporting.

Alternatively, fast travel packs cost 25 metal shards, these packs can be bought from nearly any hunting merchant throughout the game. To craft your own fast travel pack, you’ll need 10 Ridge-Wood and 3 Wild Meat, you can get the meat from wild boars or peccaries.

Now that you have figured out how to fast-travel in Horizon Forbidden West, be sure to find out how to start Burning Shores in the game, which will give you plenty of additional story thanks to the Horizon Forbidden West Burning Shores length .

Horizon Forbidden West Fast Travel: How to Fast Travel for free and Craft Fast Travel Packs

Horizon Forbidden West is a huge game with a massive world – and basically no loading times. So you're going to want to know how to Fast Travel often.

Even though a big part of the upgraded traversal and exploration experience in Horizon Forbidden West encourages you to glide, zipwire and grapple around the map, there are still going to be times where you want to get from A to B in a flash.

To that end, you're going to need to know how to fast travel in Horizon Forbidden West . The system has changed a little bit since the first game – and some of the quality of life elements from Zero Dawn have seemingly been removed from the sequel – so with that in mind, we've put together all the information you need to know about unlocking, using and making the most of Aloy's peculiar ability to teleport around the map on a whim.

How do you fast travel in Horizon Forbidden West?

To fast travel in Horizon Forbidden West, you need to first go within about 20m of a Campfire . These can be found in settlements, out in the world, or near key locations. They are also located at Shelters – places that have a Workbench (for upgrading weapons and armor) and a Stash (where surplus items are stored). Campfires are used to save your game, and also act as handy locations you can teleport to on a whim.

Once unlocked, you can use Fast Travel Packs to quickly and easily return to these locations. These items can be used in-game (scroll across to it on your item wheel, then hit down on the D-Pad) or from the world map (which you summon by hitting the touchpad).

How do you fast travel for free in Horizon Forbidden West?

Earlier on in the game, you probably won't have the money spare to be buying endless supplies of Fast Travel Packs, and crafting them can get a bit tiresome, too.

Good news, though: you can Fast Travel for free from any Campfire you've unlocked . Simply go near the Campfire and press Circle. You will be taken to the world map, where you can select any previously unlocked location and hit R2 to immidiately be taken there.

How do you craft Fast Travel Packs in Horizon Forbidden West?

To craft a Fast Travel Pack, you will need 10 Ridge-Wood and 3 Wild Meat . Ridge-Wood is found in pretty much every area of the game; it's the spindly white wood you can harvest from the world. Wild Meat is taken from animals that you have killed. In order to find animals that provide Wild Meat, hold down R3 to open your Focus, then search for glowing orange animals – shoot these with your bow for Wild Meat and items that will be used to upgrade your various pouches.

To craft the pack, either find a Workbench and select the item from 'Resources', or hold down on the D-Pad in the wild to open your crafting menu. Then, hold X to craft.

No matter where you are in the game (apart from during Story Missions), you will be able to use a Fast Travel Pack to return to any previously unlocked Campfire.

Horizon Forbidden West has been released and is making the rounds across the games industry and community for its great feats of achievements and vast amounts of content for players to enjoy. Whether you are just starting to level up or are thoroughly through your playthrough already, there are many systems throughout Horizon Forbidden West that you want to know about. One particular aspect is the crafting system and how to fast travel between locations, you will be able to utilize fast travel packs to travel from anywhere instead of at campfires. This guide article will take you through the process of how to craft Fast Travel Packs in Horizon Forbidden West and what they are.

What Fast Travel Packs Are In Horizon Forbidden West

Firstly, before crafting the fast travel packs you may want to know the advantage of crafting them. Fast Travel Packs are a type of ‘utility’ tool within the experience. Shaped like a rucksack, quite simply they will allow you to travel between any discovered campfire, shelter, or settlement from anywhere on the map without needing to visit a campfire first as aforementioned whether it be from near Plainsong to The Daunt or anywhere else. You will use one of the Fast Travel Packs every time you travel by utilizing this method so having a lot of them is vital to ensure you can continue traveling from anywhere.

There are a few methods to obtaining Fast Travel Packs, you can either purchase them from various vendors or you can choose to craft them on the go which certainly is the more convenient method while traveling across the lands nowhere near a settlement.

Fast Travel Packs can be crafted by simply pressing on the ‘D-pad’ Left or Right (or changing items in the crafting menu) until you reach the Fast Travel Pack Tool once you have one in your inventory, you can then hold down on the Fast Travel Pack to bring up the crafting menu for that item. You will need 10 Ridge Wood and 3 Wild Meat to craft the item. Once you have got the resources, simply hold ‘X’ to craft the Fast Travel Pack.

You can use this same method to craft other items by searching through your tools and bringing up the crafting menu for them similarly with the Fast Travel Pack.

In terms of where to get the resources required to craft the Fast Travel Pack, it is likely that you will have a lot of both of these resources. Ridge Wood can be found practically everywhere you look in the wilds of Horizon Forbidden West. Simply walk up to the tree branches in the ground and press triangle to gather the Ridge Wood, you will get a nice stack of Ridge Wood for each collection.

Wild Meat however can be found in a variety of ways, one of the ways is by harvesting it from animals such as ‘Boar’ or other animals that you have hunted if you are in the wild and close to animals. Wild Meat can also be used to purchase food from Cooks at settlements.

Horizon Forbidden West: How to Fast Travel – All Methods

There is more than one way you can fast travel in Horizon Forbidden West. We have listed all methods so read our guide and find out.

threads

Fast travel is one of those game mechanics which are a must-have for modern games. Horizon Forbidden West’s map is 5 miles long. Meaning it can take quite some time to get from one end to the other.

To put that into retrospect, it takes 30 minutes on a land mount and 12 minutes on a flying mount. Thankfully, Horizon Forbidden West’s fast travel is well thought-out and makes moving around much easier. This is especially useful when trying to collect items for secret weapons like Regalla’s Wrath or the Wings of the Ten .

Let’s dive into Horizon Forbidden West’s fast travel mechanics without further ado!

  • Horizon Forbidden West features a Fast Travel System utilizing “Campfires” spread across the map.
  • Two ways to fast travel: easily between campfires or using resources with Fast Travel Packs.
  • Obtain fast travel ability early in the game through the mission “To the Brink.”
  • Within 20 meters of an unlocked campfire, use it for fast travel (indicated by a white icon).
  • Fast Travel Packs can be used from anywhere to a campfire, available for purchase (25 metal shards) or crafting (3 Wild Meat, 10 Ridge Wood).
  • Maximum of 50 Fast Travel Packs can be held at once.
  • The Base serves as a hub for quick travel without consuming Fast Travel Packs

How to Fast Travel for free

  • Two methods of travel: free (between campfires) and resource-exhausting.
  • Free travel is restricted to initiation from a campfire, not possible from anywhere on the map.
  • Fast travel limited to campfires or settlements with campfires that have been visited before.
  • Campfires are made available for fast travel by being within 20m of them, turning the icon white.
  • To initiate fast travel, approach the unlocked campfire and hold down the circle button to access the menu.
  • Choose a campfire near the desired location to complete the fast travel process

Campfires in shelters also have another use, changing the time of the day. You get to pick between the four options:

  • Morning (4 Hours)
  • Afternoon (9 Hours)
  • Evening (15 Hours)
  • Night (19 Hours)

Though do keep in mind this feature comes a little later in the game and not as immediately as Fast Travel.

How to Fast Travel with Fast Travel Packs

  • In Horizon Forbidden West, Fast Travel Packs are essential for traveling from any location on the map to a specific campfire.
  • Unlike the first game’s Golden Fast Travel Pack, which allowed unlimited fast travel, regular Fast Travel Packs are now used upon each travel.
  • Fast Travel Packs enable travel even during battles, offering a convenient escape option.
  • While they cannot be used when falling or during story sequences, Fast Travel Packs provide flexibility in various situations.
  • To use Fast Travel Packs, open the map, hover over the desired campfire, press R2, and confirm or cancel the use of a Fast Travel Pack

Travel Packs to save time

The Fast Travel Packs also allow you to travel to other discovered locations such as Ruins, Tallnecks, and Melee Pits.

How to acquire Fast Travel Packs

You will most likely want to keep some Fast Travel Packs on you for emergency purposes. To acquire them, you can either craft or purchase them.

Merchants in the wild and in settlements sell these Fast Travel Packs for 25 metal shards . Although at a low price, shards also have a more important use case in upgrading weapons and buying the best armors . So, your next best bet is to craft them yourself.

Fast Travel Pack From Merchant

Crafting a Fast Travel Pack simply costs 3 Wild Meat and 10 Ridge Wood . With both the resources being vastly available throughout the map, crafting seems like the better option. Wild Meat can be harvested from boars, whereas Ridge Wood is literally everywhere. Ridge Wood is the same item used for crafting arrows for regular or best bows and looks like small dead trees.

Fast Travel Pack Crafting

Regardless of whether you buy the item or craft it, you can hold up to 50 Fast Travel Packs. If you’re not in the middle of a treasure hunt, 50 is an ample amount for regular playthroughs.

With that, we wrap up all there is to know about Horizon Forbidden West Fast Travel. Make sure to utilize the campfires as much as you can to zip around the map freely. Let us know in the comments if you have any questions!

Horizon Forbidden West: How To Get Fast Travel Packs

Aloy in Horizon Forbidden West, one of the best PlayStation 5 games

Horizon Forbidden West is here at last. And fans seem to be loving it so far. Part of the reason for that is because of how deep and varied its gameplay is. As a result, there’s an incredible amount to learn. So, once you’ve gotten over how incredible Horizon Forbidden West looks, it’s time to get stuck into the game itself. With Forbidden West having such a big open world, you’re probably wondering if you can fast travel. Thankfully, you can. And there’s a couple of ways to do it. Unless you’re at a camp fire, you’ll need to use a Fast Travel Pack. Here’s how to get Fast Travel Packs in Horizon Forbidden West .

How To Get Fast Travel Packs In Horizon Forbidden West

As mentioned, Horizon Forbidden West is a massive game. Consequently, there’s a lot of ground to cover over the course of its story. Sometimes, you’ll need to go back on yourself. Of course, you can always walk/ride back to a previously discovered location – but that’s time consuming. So, fast travelling is the quickest choice.

There are two methods of fast travel in Horizon Forbidden West . You can do it for free from a camp fire, or you can use a Fast Travel Pack. The latter are consumable and will need to be replenished should you run out and wish to fast travel again.

This is how to get Fast Travel Packs in Horizon Forbidden West . Fast Travel Packs can be bought from traders for 25 metal shards. They can also be crafted. To craft, press left or right on the d-pad to navigate the Tools menu in the bottom left. Once you’ve found Fast Travel Pack (the bed roll icon), hold down on the d-pad. This brings up the crafting screen. You need 10 Ridge-Wood and 3 Wild Meat to craft 1 Fast Travel Pack. Finally, hold X to craft.

And there you have it. You should now be able to replenish your Fast Travel Packs as needed.

Horizon Zero Dawn Fast Travel - how to get the Golden Fast Travel Pack for unlimited fast travel

How and where to get your hands on the hugely useful Golden Fast Travel Pack.

Fast Travel in Horion Zero Dawn works a little differently to the standard method we've come to expect from open-world adventure games.

Unlike most, it's limited, relying on Fast Travel Packs - items carried by Aloy - in order to work. However, there is a way to unlock that mechanic and grant unlimited fast travel to any discovered Campfire, thanks to the Golden Fast Travel Pack .

So, exactly how does fast travel work , how do you get the Golden Fast Travel Pack , and how exactly do you unlock unlimited fast travel in Horizon Zero Dawn ? All of that is explained here in our guide, below.

golden fast travel pack forbidden west

How does fast travel work in Horizon Zero Dawn?

Fast Travel in Horizon Zero Dawn revolves around Campfires or, more specifically, Campfires you've already visited.

You don't have to have saved at them or even interacted with them, just have got close enough to have the text pop up on screen that it's been discovered. From then on, you'll be able to fast travel to that location, provided you have one other thing: a Fast Travel Pack.

In the early stages of the game, these are found from certain vendors or, if you're lucky maybe a random crate or slain human enemy.

These Packs act as one-time-use consumables, meaning you'll need to stock up, at a fair bit of expense to both your time and Metal Shards, if you want to fast travel often - and as the game progresses, you probably do.

How to get the Golden Fast Travel Pack in Horizon Zero Dawn

Enter, the Golden Fast Travel Pack. Narratively unexplained but nonetheless incredibly useful, this pack will let you travel an unlimited number of times, without worrying about stocking up your inventory.

It's obtained from a number of Traders around the world of Horizon, although for the record we sourced ours from the merchant just outside Meridian, by the big bridge leading into the city.

How much does the Golden Fast Travel Pack cost? Well, it's relatively cheap:

  • 50 Metal Shards - obtained from all kinds of sources but, most commonly, from slain machines or selling items to merchants.
  • 1 Fox Skin - somewhat harder, although far from impossible, to obtain. This drops randomly from wild Foxes you can hunt anywhere on the map. Forresty areas are generally the best, and we found one after only killing a handful, so it shouldn't take you long.
  • 10 Fatty Meat - this, again, is quite easy to find. It comes from any wild animal you can hunt, so you can normally pick some up from a quick trip into the wild where you can hunt Boar, Turkey, and Fox at your will.

For more tips, explainers and advice on Horizon be sure to check out our main Horizon Zero Dawn guide and walkthrough hub, which includes advice for things like Horizon Zero Dawn's override Cauldrons and which machines they let you control, getting hold of the Golden Fast Travel Pack for unlimited fast travel , finding and unlocking the very powerful Horizon Zero Dawn Shield Weave Armour and Power Cell locations , and then for DLC players there's our main Horizon Zero Dawn Frozen Wilds walkthrough and guide , a page on how to earn Bluegleam quickly , and finally, a page on the handy A Secret Shared quest and how to upgrade your spear in Horizon Frozen Wilds .

Once you have the required items, simply head to a general goods merchant, and it can be found at the bottom of the 'Resources' tab, shaded in purple for Very Rare.

That's all you need to know in terms of fast travel, but for more tips and tricks, take a look at our hub page, featuring a complete Horizon Zero Dawn walkthrough and guide for the main story, as well as our guide to all Power Cell locations for the secret Shield-Weave armour , too.
