Honolulu Cruise Port Terminal information

Last updated on February 1st, 2024 at 04:14 pm

Honolulu's cruise terminal is conveniently located near the iconic Waikiki Beach, providing an ideal starting point for exploring the beauty of the Hawaiian Islands. Immerse yourself in the island's rich culture, visit historical sites, and indulge in delicious local cuisine before setting sail.

Honolulu Harbor has two cruise terminals . The primary terminal is located at Pier 2 Cruise Terminal at 521 Ala Moana Boulevard, at the west end of Channel Street.

Pier 2 – Honolulu Cruise Port

Pier 11 – honolulu cruise terminal.

Starting your cruise from Hawaii can give you more time to explore the beautiful islands, instead of having a number sea days at the beginning and end of your cruise when departing from the mainland.

At the cruise terminal, there is limited seating, no WiFi and no wheelchair service. There will be porters available to collect your luggage, and washrooms are located before and after security.

See here for transportation information to get from the airport to the pier.

Cruises From Hawaii:

The Norwegian Pride of America is the only cruise line which has a ship in Hawaii year-round, sailing around the islands. The following ships embark from Honolulu travelling to North America’s west coast, or to the South Pacific and Australia:

There are two cruise terminals in Honolulu Hawaii, on the Hawaiian Island of Oahu.

The original cruise terminal is located at the iconic Aloha Tower in the heart of Honolulu.  It has welcomed cruise passengers to the island since the dawn of the modern cruise industry and was immortalized in old Elvis Presley movies.

The terminal is located at the foot of Bishop Street in the heart of Oahu's largest city.

The newer Honolulu Cruise Terminal, which is much larger, is called Terminal 2.  It is located between the Aloha Tower and Waikiki.

Because the Honolulu Cruise port is located is the city centre, cruise passengers can easily access Honolulu's top tourist attractions on foot.  Some cruise lines offer free shuttle service to Waikiki Beach.

Bus Service

Sightseeing:

The Island of Oahu is Hawaii all on one island and truly is the heart of Hawaii. Oahu is home to Hawaii's State Capital, Honolulu, and often nicknamed "The Gathering Place", attracting visitors from around the world to enjoy the unique culture, natural beauty and Aloha Spirit. Discover the many sides of Oahu. Explore the lush, Windward Coast or take a beautiful, scenic drive to the legendary North Shore. Indulge in great shopping and dining in Waikiki and immerse yourself in the cool arts and culture scene in Hip and Historic Honolulu.

Waikiki Beach is the center of activity for Hawaii's biggest industry: tourism. This is one of the world's greatest resort playgrounds, featuring some of the most beautiful beaches and hotels in the world. Visitors from all over the world flock here to enjoy the sun, the sand and the incredible nightlife.

The history of Hawaii is very rich, as the islands have always attracted many different people. Visitors can tour the Iolani Palace , the residence of the last of the Hawaiian monarchs. They can also visit Honolulu's Chinatown, which is more authentic than many of its mainland counterparts. They can also visit the Arizona Memorial , commemorating the destruction of the battleship Arizona during the Japanese attack on Pearl Harbor that brought America into World War II.

Tours Excursions Transportation:

The Red Line Trolley or the "Honolulu City Line" provides a convenient transportation service to Aloha Tower Marketplace from 8 other locations including Waikiki. The trolley arrives every 40 minutes, 7 days a week, including holidays from 9.21 a.m. - 5:21 p.m. One day pass for all three lines is sold for $32.00 at the DFS Galleria trolley ticket booth in Waikiki and Ala Moana Center.

If it is important to you to visit Pearl harbor and the USS Arizona (especially), get off as soon as you can, and then grab a cab (there will be cabs waiting) for Pearl Harbor. You should get there before tour buses get all their passengers rounded up, and you should get earlier tickets. Then if you get there early enough, you could visit USS Arizona, and then visit Bowfin, USS Missouri, Pacific Aviation Museum or head back toward pier. You could then take www.TheBus.org and maybe stop in Chinatown, or go on to Waikiki. Being on a tour bus does not guarantee tickets to USS Arizona. Tickets are give out on a first come, first served basis, and when all are gone for the day, they are GONE! If ship's tour is $49, taxi would be much cheaper--maybe about $25.00 - $30.00. The memorials and museums are about 9.5 miles away from where you are docked.

It pays to compare your cruise line excursions : Tours etc. offered by GetYourGuide and by Viator .

Nearby Places:

Besides the beaches, visitors to Honolulu can take tours of the countryside surrounding the downtown area. These tours are amazing, bringing visitors to some of the most beautiful rain forests and volcanoes in the world. Animal and plant life are abundant, and the scenery is unsurpassed. A five-minute car ride from Honolulu brings visitors into some of Nature's most beautiful and awe-inspiring sights. Several museums, including the Bishop Museum , combine exhibits on Hawaiian natural history with lessons about history and culture of its many diverse peoples. The Waikiki Aquarium is the third oldest public aquarium in the United States, and it features many of Hawaii's most interesting sea animals. The Honolulu Zoo also features some of the unique mammals, birds, and reptiles that inhabit the forests just outside of the city.

Shopping and Food

From Aloha Tower, you can catch free shopping shuttles to Walmart and Hilo Hatties.

Ala Moana Shopping Center An international center of more than 200 stores and restaurants, Ala Moana is renowned as one of the largest open-air shopping centers in the world. It is a veritable shopper's paradise, with national and international stores from Banana Republic, Tiffany, and Neiman Marcus to Cartier, YSL, Louis Vuitton, and Burberry - side-by-side with unique surf apparel and gift shops that make "Hawaiian style" an experience like no other. It's no wonder more than two million people visit Ala Moana Center each month.

Chinatown Shops Honolulu's 200-year old Chinatown is a wonderland of shops that feature herbs, fresh produce, fish markets, restaurants and a rainbow of fresh flower leis. Here a mix of Asian cultures is concentrated in an area where exotic spices infuse the air and the way to good health is through acupuncture and herbalists.

The official U.S. currency is the United States dollar (symbol: $). ATM's everywhere.

Major credit cards such as Visa and MasterCard are widely used and accepted, even for transactions worth only a few dollars. In fact, in some cases, it may be the only way to make a transaction. Note to overseas visitors: Prices of goods and services always seem lower than they really are, as taxes and gratuities are seldom included.

Most states have a sales tax, ranging from 2.9% to nearly 10% of the retail price; 4-6% is typical. Sales tax is almost never included in posted prices (except for gasoline, and in most states, alcoholic beverages consumed on-premises), but instead will be calculated and added to the total when you pay.

Tipping in America is widely used and expected. While Americans themselves often debate correct levels and exactly who deserves to be tipped, generally accepted standard rates are:

  • Full-service restaurants: 15-20% (Often this is the only income of the wait(ress). Tips are either left in cash or you can add it to the credit card slip) Note: Few restaurants add an automatic service charge, in which case it is up to you how much you tip extra. Check your bill!
  • Taxi drivers, hairdressers, other personal services: 10-15%
  • Bartenders: $1 per drink if inexpensive or 15% of total
  • Bellhops: $1-2 per bag ($3-5 minimum regardless)
  • Hotel doorman: $1 per bag (if they assist), $1 for calling a cab
  • Tour guides: Depending on tour length, size, and overall quality of guided tours; for half day tours or less $5-10 per person, for longer tours $10-20 per person.
  • Private car & limousine drivers: 15-20%
  • Housekeeping in hotels: $1-2 per day for long stays or $5 minimum for very short stays (optional)
  • Food delivery (pizza, etc.): $2-5, possibly more for very large orders

Opening Hours and Holidays:

In major metropolitan areas like New York and Los Angeles, many drugstores and supermarkets are routinely open 24 hours per day, 7 days per week, while department stores, shopping centers and most other large retailers are typically open from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. Monday to Saturday, and often with shorter hours on Sundays - generally 11 a.m. or noon to 5 or 6 p.m. On holidays, the tendency is to remain open (with the exception of the most important holidays like Thanksgiving Day and Christmas Day where stores are generally closed)

Additional attractions include Iolani Palace, once the residence of Hawaiian monarchs, and the National Memorial Cemetery of the Pacific, the burial ground for more than 50,000 American service members. Excursions are available to Oahu's North Shore; the island's Windward Coast, a filming locale for the movie "Jurassic Park;" and the Dole Plantation, where you can sample freshly procured pineapple.

Your Hawaii Cruise Ports Depends on Your Itinerary

Where you go on your Hawaiian cruise largely depends on the cruise line and itinerary. Most cruises will visit Oahu, Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island, although others may only make stops at two or three islands.

For example, Norwegian Cruise Line operates a year-round Hawaiian cruise that leaves from and returns to Honolulu, Oahu. After leaving Honolulu, the Pride of America visits four different ports – Kahului (Maui), Hilo (Hawaii Island), Kona (Hawaii Island), and Nawiliwili (Kauai).

It’s the only cruise that stays in Hawaii, so it’s the best option if you want to see as much as possible in a short amount of time. Plus, it has overnight stays on the Big Island, Kauai, and Maui so you can stay in a hotel or take part in early morning or late evening excursions. Plus, no sea days means more time to explore the islands!

Hawaii Departure Ports

Before you decide on a Hawaiian cruise, it’s important to take note of the departure and arrival ports, as they are different from ship to ship. Generally speaking, most Pacific Ocean-crossing itineraries will leave from the west coast. The most common departure and arrival ports include:

  • San Francisco, California
  • Los Angeles, California
  • San Diego, California
  • Seattle, Washington
  • Vancouver, BC

Of course, these aren’t the only departure ports for cruise ships, as many long-term itineraries operate from various points around the world. Extended voyages can leave from Miami, England, or even Australia before making their way to Hawaii!

However, the majority of one to two-week Hawaiian cruises will leave from the west coast. Foreign-flagged or built ships that travel between two US ports are required to stop at a foreign country sometime during the journey (in most cases, this will be Vancouver, Canada, or Ensenada, Mexico). This is due to the Passenger Vessel Service Act (PVSA) , which aims to protect the American maritime industry.

You’ll find that most ships make these foreign country stops, except for NCL’s Pride of America. As the only ship to qualify for the PVSA , it’s allowed to travel between US ports and stay in Hawaii for the entire duration of the trip. The ship runs every week throughout the year and departs from and arrives back at Oahu’s Cruise Terminal 2, which is located in the city of Honolulu.

Because of the PVSA, the Pride of America follows a strict set of guidelines. Not only is the crew required to be 75% American, but they must also abide by US labor laws and wages, which can make voyages on this cruise more expensive than others.

What to Expect at Hawaii Cruise Ports

Because you’ll only have a limited time at each Hawaii cruise port, it’s crucial to plan out what you want to do beforehand. Should you book a shore excursion? Is it necessary to rent a car? Can you easily walk to a beach from the port? As you can see, there are lots of questions that need to be answered before you disembark!

To help make your stay on land as smooth as possible, we recommend getting our Cruising Hawaii Guide . It’s packed with insider tips on what to do on those days when you’re docked.

This includes over 90 shore excursions on Maui, Oahu, Kauai, and the Big Island, including snorkel spots, volcano hikes, waterfall treks, and more! We’ll also share how to get around (taxi, Uber, or car rental) and a few self-guided excursion days to make the most of your time here. You will waste no time when you land at these Hawaii cruise ports.

Shore excursions from Hawaii cruise ports.

Hawaii Cruise Ports: Your Ports of Call

Oahu (honolulu) cruise terminal.

As the starting and/or ending point for many Hawaiian cruises, Honolulu is likely to be included on your itinerary. The Pier 2 Cruise Terminal is centrally located between Waikiki and downtown Honolulu, making it a good jumping-off point for exploring the most popular attractions on Oahu.

If Honolulu is at the beginning or end of your trip, then we recommend spending at least two or three days here. We recommend doing this prior to your cruise to adjust for the jet lag and you can tick off some sights while also having downtime for a few lazy beach days.

Best Honolulu shore excursions :

  • Visit Pearl Harbor and the USS Arizona
  • Take a sightseeing tour of the entire island
  • Learn how to surf on Waikiki Beach
  • Sail on a traditional wooden catamaran

Hawaii cruise ports Honolulu

Maui, Hawaii Cruise Ports

Kahului Harbor on the northern coast of the island is the main port of Maui. As a cargo facility, there isn’t much to do around the harbor, so we strongly recommend booking a tour or having a plan of action of what to do when you arrive.

The harbor is a 10-minute drive to the Kahului airport, which makes it easy to rent a car if you would like to drive around. And because of the port’s central location, it’s easy to reach most of Maui’s attractions in under an hour.

The second port on Maui is Lahaina Harbor (a tender port). At the moment, this terminal is closed after the devastating fires that ripped through Maui on August 8th, 2023. Because of the damage, Lahaina Harbor is no longer in operation for incoming cruises. While some cruise lines list Lahaina as a port of call for some 2024 departures, it’s unknown if it will be up and running at that time.

Best Maui shore excursions :

  • Drive (or be driven) through the Road to Hana
  • Snorkel the Molokini Crater
  • Marvel at the sunrise over Halekalani

Hawaii cruise ports Kahului Maui

Island of Hawaii Cruise Ports

Most ships make two stops on the Big Island, giving you ample time to see different things on both coasts. The Port of Hilo is located on the eastern side and is the gateway to the Hawaii Volcanos National Park. However, this is also the rainy side of the island, which means you can also expect to see lush rainforests and beautiful, cascading waterfalls!

Kailua Pier (a tender port) is situated on the western side of the island. From here, you’ll be just a stone’s throw away from beautiful beaches, incredible snorkeling, and tons of fun water sport opportunities! There’s also a charming town center within walking distance from the port with some great restaurants and bars.

Depending on your cruise operator, it’s possible to spend a night on land while the ship moves between ports. Doing so does cost extra (you’ll need to book a hotel for the night), but it allows you to take advantage of full-day tours, early-morning excursions, and even late-night or evening tours.

Best Island of Hawaii shore excursions :

  • Hike Volcanoes National Park
  • Sample coffee on a Kona coffee farm tour
  • Snorkel with Manta Rays at night
  • Go stargazing on Mauna Kea
  • Admire humpback whales on a whale watching tour (from December to March)

Hawaii cruise ports Kailua Pier

Kauai, Hawaii Cruise Port

If your cruise is going to Kauai, it will dock at Nawiliwili Harbor in Lihue. Although its a bit outside of town, you can easily reach other popular destinations around the island by booking a tour, renting a car, or hiring a cab.

Places like Poipu and Wailua are close by, while Waimea Canyon and Hanalei are a bit further out and require more planning.

Some ships, like NCL’s Pride of America, spend two days docked at Kauai. With more time here than other ports of call, you’ll be able to see much more of the Garden Isle. It also means you can book early morning, late evening, or even full-day excursions.

Best Kauai shore excursions :

  • See the unspoiled Napali Coast
  • Hike the lush Waimea Canyon
  • Go mountain tubing through the Hawaiian backcountry

10 Best Hawaiian Island Cruises, From Adventurous Expeditions to Luxury Ships

T he thing about Hawaii cruises is that there’s no bad time of year to take one. Thanks to its year-round sunshine and warm weather, Hawaii will be there for you whenever you’re ready to set sail.

Several major cruise lines, including Holland America, Princess Cruises, and Viking Cruises, call on ports in Hawaii, with many of them traveling to or from the United States or Canada. Norwegian Cruise Line is the only company that sails exclusively between Oahu and neighboring Hawaiian islands. The  Pride of America , a United States-themed ship, makes stops in Maui , Kauai, and the Big Island before returning to Honolulu , a perfect home base for visiting Waikiki Beach and Pearl Harbor.

Sailing between the Hawaiian Islands is generally relatively calm, though there are occasional reports of rough patches on cruises that cross the Pacific Ocean. And while every month is a good month to cruise to Hawaii, peak whale-watching season in the region is between January and March. It can be rainy, so you’ll want to pack a rain jacket . But a little rain might just be worth it to avoid summer crowds in one of the most popular travel destinations in the world.

Cruises are an ideal way to explore Hawaii, and there are plenty of options that fit a broad range of travel styles and tastes.

Best Hawaiian cruise for island hopping

Norwegian Pride of America

Most Hawaii cruises require several days at sea, but not Norwegian’s Pride of America . The 2,186-passenger Pride of America is the only cruise ship that sails from Oahu to other Hawaiian islands, minimizing sea days to whisk travelers to four Hawaiian islands in a week. The ship departs from Honolulu every Saturday all year long, making it easy to tack on visits to Pearl Harbor, Diamond Head, and Waikiki Beach. It overnights in Maui and Kauai and makes two stops on the Big Island—in Hilo and Kona. Onboard the Pride of America , you’ll find a classic American diner, a Brazilian churrascaria, a steakhouse, sushi bar, and teppanyaki in addition to pools, an arcade, shops, and a spa. There are several bars, including a Napa-themed wine bar, a Mardi Gras style nightclub, and old-style Gold Rush Saloon.

Best luxury Hawaiian cruises

Seven Seas Mariner

Regent Seven Seas isn’t just one of the most luxurious ships sailing in Hawaii, it also offers one of the most interesting itineraries. Sail from Miami to Honolulu on the Seven Seas Mariner by first crossing the iconic Panama Canal before sailing the western coast of Mexico and Central America toward Hawaii. The ship makes three Hawaiian stops on this 21-night itinerary, including an overnight stop in Honolulu. Level up your cruise experience by booking a penthouse suite, which includes access to a personal butler. All cruise fares include shore excursions, onboard dining, all beverages, and unlimited Wi-Fi. The cruise line prides itself on creating memorable dining experiences and it’s not uncommon for guests to become accustomed to its succulent lobster dishes, filet mignon, and poolside burgers. This itinerary does include several sea days, but between the ship’s plush suites and the variety of things to do on board, you may not notice. Even the lowest-priced suites offer floor-to-ceiling windows and verandas made for breakfast on the balcony.

Seabourn Sojourn

If you’ve got a few weeks to spare, the Seabourn Sojourn has an itinerary that’s well worth the time. Seabourn’s 20-day Allure of Aloha itinerary starts and ends in Los Angeles, calling on several Hawaiian ports and making a stop in Mexico along the way. Spend a few days at sea getting to know the ship before an overnight stop in Honolulu and stops in Maui, Kauai, and the Big Island. Spend a few more days at sea unwinding from your Hawaiian adventure and make one more stop in Ensenada, Mexico before returning to Los Angeles. Seabourn is one of the most luxurious cruise lines at sea, and the Sojourn doesn’t disappoint. The ship carries just over 450 passengers, making it one of the smaller vessels sailing in Hawaii. Instead of a grand lobby with a glistening chandelier, you’ll be welcomed into a space that feels more like a comfortable upscale living room. And sailings are all-inclusive, so there’s no need to think about beverage and meal packages. Even Starlink Wi-Fi, premium spirits, caviar, room service, and a stocked mini-bar are included.

The Celebrity Edge sails between Vancouver , Canada, and Hawaii on itineraries that range from eight to 13 nights. Play trivia. Dress up for high tea with your favorite Disney princes and princesses. Staterooms are designed for families with the largest suites accommodating up to seven people. Safari Explorer

Sailing the 36-passenger Safari Explorer through the Hawaiian islands feels more like meandering the Pacific Ocean on a yacht than taking a cruise to one of the most popular destinations in the world. This UnCruise voyage swaps more developed Hawaiian ports for harder-to-reach locations like Molokai and Lanai. This cruise visits four islands in a week and is designed for active adventurers looking to hike volcanoes, snorkel with Manta Rays at night, and let nature take center stage of their vacation.

Viking Star

For a ship with more options, more space, and a small-ship vibe, hop on the Viking Star for a 17-day voyage that includes 10 sea days and stops in Hilo, where you can see Mauna Kea, Hawaii’s largest volcano, and in Kauai, where you can take in the breathtaking sight of Waimea Canyon, known as “the Grand Canyon of the Pacific.” That may seem like a lot of sea days, but it’s barely enough time to fully enjoy the Viking Star ’s Nordic Spa, cozy reading nooks, and creative menus. This cruise begins and ends in Los Angeles and can accommodate a maximum of 930 passengers. This is no party ship, but there is a bar on board and an Italian restaurant so good you’d think you’re sailing the Amalfi Coast. And, every suite on board the Viking Star comes with a balcony and a stocked mini-bar.

Best Hawaiian cruise for solo travelers

Norwegian Sun

Cruising solo can be complicated and expensive, but not on the Norwegian Sun in Hawaii. This ship got a full revamp in 2018 and has a collection of staterooms designed for solo cruising. These staterooms have queen-sized beds and are similar to other interior staterooms, but they’re priced for one. So go ahead and spend your days walking idyllic beaches, exploring volcanic landscapes, and getting lost in the swaying of palm trees before returning to your private retreat onboard the ship. The Norwegian Sun sails several two-week itineraries that incorporate Hawaii. Several itineraries combine Hawaiian and Alaskan stops while others head to islands in the South Pacific. It accommodates just under 2,000 passengers, making it one of the more manageable ships in Norwegian’s fleet.
