By Rumsey Taylor

A mysterious orb blares across the sky and punches into the sun-baked bed of a desert landscape. From it a messianic being emerges. For the viewer it’s at this point, early in the 2009 film “I Am Here …. Now,” that the proceedings veer in one of two directions: a solemn polemic about drug use, corporate corruption and environmental exploitation; or an endearingly inept science-fiction parable, the charms of which center wholly on the middle-aged man who plays the alien being. His name is Neil Breen.

Breen has produced, written, directed and starred in five films. His sixth, “Cade: The Tortured Crossing,” just opened in select theaters (it screens in New York in August), and if the trailer is any indication, then his singular, if peculiar, vision has remained intact.

For the past 18 years Breen has been making imaginative but bewildering low-budget paranormal thrillers in and near his suburban Las Vegas home. Some concern interstellar visitors like the one in “I Am Here …. Now”; others focus on hackers with superhuman abilities. There are talismanic crystals, mystical animals (predominantly eagles or tigers), and what I assume is Breen’s own Ferrari Testarossa. His dialogue tends to be peppered with technological keywords: artificial intelligence, cyberterrorism, metaverse, virtual reality — concepts that Breen never convincingly grasps and that seem abstract considering his films look as if they were made for tens of thousands of dollars. (Breen claims to have funded his early films with his income as an architect.)

He serves in multiple roles in each production: location manager, music director, sound effects supervisor, editor, lighting designer, set designer, special effects designer, prop master, stunt coordinator, even legal and accounting services. And it’s his face emblazoned on each poster, making it indisputably clear that the distinguishing feature of a Neil Breen film is Neil Breen.

“I am honestly sincerely doing the best I can, with the resources that I have, both physically and financially,” Breen said in a 2014 interview with New York Cine Radio. (He didn’t respond to interview requests for this article.)

If resourcefulness is considered one of the core tenets of independent film, then Breen could be one of the central filmmakers of the past two decades. When he talks about his work, he tends to proudly reiterate the same anecdotes about how he assembles his casts via Craigslist ads or how he corresponds directly with the theaters that exhibit his work. Instead of ruminating on the meaning of his ambitious if barely coherent forays into science fiction, he’ll explain at length how he feeds his cast and crew.

Breen’s entire cinematic approach can be encapsulated in a backyard cookout scene in “ Fateful Findings ” (2013), in which the characters are actually eating. You get the sense that Breen’s intent here was to simultaneously direct, act and do the catering.

Against a white tile background, a woman with her back to the camera has her arm around a figure with a white face marked by blood.

“There’s an uncanny quality,” Cristina Cacioppo, a director of programming at Nitehawk Cinema in Brooklyn, said when asked to describe Breen’s films. “Sort of a resemblance to reality, but just sort of like otherworldly.”

All of Breen’s films seem clearly to mean something, and watching them, one’s suspension of disbelief is constantly threatened by strange directorial choices. Even when they’re 90 minutes, some feel interminable. In a simple scene of dialogue he’ll freely break the 180-degree rule, a basic staging technique meant to keep the viewer oriented. His later films make generous use of composite photography, and characters will be both uncannily too large and too small in the same ethereal vista. My favorite among his many idiosyncrasies is the thunderously expository dialogue. This is from the 2016 “Pass-Thru” :

Media President: I know senior national elected government officials who I can force my political bias and influence on fellow politicians, to vote my way. For a payoff, of course. Thgil (Breen): Isn’t that corrupt?

None of this logically anticipates Breen’s dire, cartoonishly violent narratives. “Pass-Thru” culminates in his darkest sequence, with Thgil — another of the messianic aliens in which Breen specializes — walking toward the horizon’s vanishing point. The landscape is strewn with hundreds of thousands of bodies, a genocide he’s issued as punishment for those who’ve abused Earth’s precious resources.

“Fateful Findings,” which I and many others consider Breen’s most deranged film, exemplifies the tonal stiltedness and libertarian rage that pervades his work. The first two-thirds qualify as a drama, marked by alcoholism, painkiller addiction and unrequited love. By the time it ends there has been an abduction, murders, teleportation and a revelatory news conference that culminates in six consecutive suicides.

With each production, Breen’s audience, drawn from word of mouth and social media, has grown. He began to raise interest when “I Am Here …. Now” played at West Coast theaters like the now defunct Cinefamily in West Hollywood, Calif., where it was marketed as a hilarious oddity .

For many audiences the natural response to Breen’s films is laughter. He’s often likened to Tommy Wiseau , whose “The Room” (2003) is considered one of the worst movies ever made, or Ed Wood, whose charmingly ramshackle genre exercises from the 1950s might be considered forerunners of Breen’s work. But these comparisons are shallow. By the end of his career Wood had fallen into obscurity, directing pornography under a pseudonym. And Wiseau seems to have succumbed by self-parody. His six-episode sitcom, “The Neighbors,” and his appearances in other films (like “ Samurai Cop 2: Deadly Vengeance ”) demonstrate none of “The Room’s” manic power.

Breen is still making films under the same unpretentious conditions, which is to say they’re just as incoherent as ever, even if they’ve evolved in technical ambition. Whereas his early films favored suburban Las Vegas and the nearby desert, his 2018 cyberthriller “Twisted Pair” is replete with green-screen photography and stock footage. Breen plays a double role, twins Cale and Cade, bestowed at birth with superhuman powers and pitted against each other with potentially world-changing consequences. The action scenes — when Cade freezes time, for instance, or leaps grasshopper-like to the upper floor of a building — contain flashes of “The Matrix.” During these sequences at a 2018 screening at the Music Box in Chicago, the crowd went berserk .

“When I used to go to see the first screenings of films like ‘Double Down’ and ‘I Am Here …. Now,’ I’d be in the back of the theater listening to the audience,” Breen said in the 2014 interview. “The audience may chuckle at parts that I never intended, but in the second half of the film they sort of begin to get it.”

Trevor Dillon, who’s programmed Breen’s work at the Frida Cinema in Santa Ana, Calif., said he thought “Neil Breen is very much like ‘I’m about the movies, I am a filmmaker, my movies play at 8 p.m.’” Dillon added that the question “is whether or not there’s a ton of self-awareness there.”

“I think he’s a scrappy independent filmmaker and I think he’s an even better businessman,” Dillon added.

Jake Isgar has programmed “Twisted Pair” and its forthcoming sequel, “Cade: The Tortured Crossing,” at Alamo Drafthouse in San Francisco. “I don’t ever want to call his movies midnight movies or create this other sort of distinction,” he said. “Why should an independent artist who’s putting his own work out there have to be ghettoized in any particular way?”

(Like me, Isgar has yet to see Breen’s newest. He said Breen “was very straightforward” and declined to send a screener to preview the film. “He says, ‘Well, you’ve seen my other movies.’”)

In his correspondence with theaters Breen stipulates that his movies should screen at around 7 p.m., and that showings should be limited to maintain demand. But embedded in such restrictions one may infer either a resistance to having his work pushed to the fringes, or a pretension in contextualizing it as a mainstream experience. Regardless, Breen’s films continue to engage audiences worldwide.

Consider a 2019 showing of “Twisted Pair” in Paris, at Le Grand Rex, the largest movie theater in Europe. At the sold-out screening, put on by the publication Nanarland (“Nanar” is a French colloquialism that roughly translates as “so bad it’s good”), the crowd “went nuts,” the Nanarland co-founder Régis Brochier said. “It was really an incredible screening.”

A clip posted to YouTube captures the mania: the roaring crowd spills out from both balconies. People start to stand and clap. The film they’re all there to see hasn’t even begun.

Film Review: “Cade: The Tortured Crossing” — The Weird Uncle Crankery of Neil Breen

By Nicole Veneto

Simply put, there’s nothing (and no one) out there quite like what Neil Breen is putting out into the world, and for that alone, we should be grateful.

neil breen tour

Some say that Neil Breen is a man — an architect and former Las Vegas real-estate agent who now makes batshit crazy and near-incomprehensible films written, directed, and starring himself, often as some kind of black-tank-top-wearing badass exposing corporate corruption/conspiratorial government secrets or a God-like entity sent to Earth to improve the human condition /awkwardly kiss actresses recruited from Craigslist. Others, including me, believe that Breen is an alien shapeshifter in the skin of a 60-something-year-old man hailing from the same strange planet as Tommy Wiseau. Unlike Tommy, however, we know how Breen amassed the fortune he drew on to make “so bad it’s good” classics like Double Down , Pass-Thru , and his “what the fuck?” magnum-opus, Fateful Findings . As with most people, Breen came to my attention through a number of YouTube film critics, mainly RedLetterMedia’s Best of the Worst web series, where Breen has become something of a patron saint for hilariously bad vanity projects that frequently delve into the sort of weird uncle crankery that would get you put on a government watchlist. Hence RedLetterMedia’s infamous reaction to Pass-Thru (i.e., the one where Breen pulls a Thanos and magically genocides millions of “bad people” from the planet): “All eyes on Breen.”

In the time it took for fellow bad movie auteur Tommy Wiseau to make his follow-up to The Room , Breen made five “films” (technically six if you count his five-hour-long retrospective documentary on his own movies), all of which you can purchase through his website . You will receive a personally printed DVD copy in a clear CD case months after you ordered it. I know this firsthand because I bought a copy of Pass-Thru for a friend’s birthday several years ago. (Prolonged delay in shipping aside, it’s probably the best gift I’ve ever given someone.) Breen’s latest offering, Cade: The Tortured Crossing , is a sequel to 2018’s Twisted Pair , wherein he plays two AI enhanced alien(?) twin brothers named Cade and Cale Altair — the former a noble rich man who moonlights as a superhero, and the latter a troubled and destitute vagrant in a hoodie and hilariously fake glued on facial hair . Whereas Breen’s prior features were all self-released and self-distributed, Cade: The Tortured Crossing is receiving a limited theatrical run from Drafthouse Films across the nation, and by god if I was going to pass up the opportunity to see a Breen movie in an actual movie theater.

Now here’s the thing: I have literally no idea what happened in Cade: The Tortured Crossing.  I assure you that it has absolutely nothing to do with the two cocktails I drank at the newly opened Boston Alamo Drafthouse clouding my cognition (if anything, being slightly buzzed is a prerequisite to watching a Breen vehicle). I can barely even tell you what happened in Twisted Pair for that matter — beyond this memorable scene I often quote under my breath at work. There’s stuff about human trafficking and experimentation happening at a derelict mental hospital that the uber-wealthy Cade has donated millions of dollars to. Boy, is he miffed that his patronage is being siphoned away by corrupt politicians and bureaucrats who put profits before people. Presumably, this is why Cade, coming on like he’s Professor Xavier, begins training some of the mental hospital’s patients into becoming mystical warriors who do bad karate. Cale also resurfaces in his musty black hoodie and fake beard trying to abduct the mental hospital’s patients for said human experimentation for reasons that are not once explained whatsoever. Oh, and did I mention the entire thing is shot in front of a green screen? Because it is.

What I can tell you about Cade: The Tortured Crossing is that it’s probably the hardest I’ve laughed with/at a movie all year. When I wasn’t absolutely bewildered by what was supposed to be happening on screen, I was maniacally cackling in the theater like DeNiro in Cape Fear . I heard murmurings on the internet that Breen’s finally become self-aware of his own public image, wise to the fact that his movies are insane fever dreams. (Breen cites a very real and very hilarious scene where he fist-fights a CGI tiger that turns into a woman wearing a Spirit of Halloween Greek goddess costume.) The secret sauce that makes a terrible movie “so bad it’s good” is in its earnestness — the total lack of awareness that what is being made is complete and utter shit and not, say, the serious Tennesse Williams-inspired relationship drama Tommy Wiseau set out to make with The Room . Bad movies are only as good as the intentions behind them. This is precisely why Asylum mockbusters and Sharknado movies aren’t any fun the way something like Miami Connection or Dangerous Men are.

neil breen tour

Double trouble? A scene from Cade: The Tortured Crossing . Photo: Neil Breen Films LLC

But whether or not Breen is finally attuned to the fact that he’s the modern day Ed Wood  and may now be leaning into that reputation is irrelevant to me. Breen is an outsider artist in the truest and purest sense of the term, possessing a vision so singular it cannot be replicated by anyone else. For what Breen lacks in technical know-how and a fundamental understanding of filmmaking as an art form he more than makes up for with the sheer craziness of his ideas and the way he goes about executing them. Outsider artists are usually defined by either a lack of formal artistic training or a lack of traditional resources. For all of Breen’s accumulated real estate wealth, all his films are painfully low-budget endeavors that feel like something Adult Swim would air at four in the morning. The dialogue is awkward and stilted, the actors hired off of Craigslist are all uniformly terrible, the props come courtesy of Party City, and the stock visual effects look like something out of a mobile game that will install malware onto your phone. And yet, in spite of it all (or rather, because of it), Cade is the sort of work that could only come from the twisted, deranged mind of a single individual. Breen does literally everything himself, including the catering.

So, is Cade: The Tortured Crossing a “good” movie? By all definitions of “good” cinema, no, it isn’t. And that’s exactly why I cannot recommend it enough. Breen answers to nobody but himself. Unlike the long string of failing franchise blockbusters 2023 has delivered to us, his movies are completely untainted by misguided producers’ notes or desperate studio intervention. Simply put, there’s nothing (and no one) out there quite like what Neil Breen is putting out into the world, and for that alone, we should be grateful.

Ellen DeGeneres Says She Was "Kicked Out of Show Business" for Being "Mean"

Ellen degeneres reflected on the allegations of a toxic workplace on the set of her former talk show while returning to her stand-up comedy roots..

Ellen DeGeneres is laying it all out.

Two years after walking away from her eponymous daytime talk show —which was mired in allegations of a toxic workplace during its final years—the comedian reflected on the controversy and its impact on her.

"I got kicked out of show business," Ellen quipped during her stand-up comedy set at the Coronet Theater in West Hollywood April 24, per Rolling Stone . "There's no mean people in show business."

"The 'be kind' girl wasn't kind," the 66-year-old continued. "I became this one-dimensional character who gave stuff away and danced up steps. Do you know how hard it is to dance up steps? Would a mean person dance up steps?"

In 2020, 11 current and former Ellen DeGeneres Show employees detailed their experience on the talk show, which they described as a toxic work environment , in an explosive BuzzFeed News report. Some mentioned facing microaggressions, favoritism by executive producers and claims of unexpected terminations.

In addition to an internal memo vowing to make improvements, Ellen apologized in the season 18 premiere opening monologue , adding, "I take that very seriously, and I want to say I am so sorry to the people who were affected."

When the show went off the air two years later, Ellen maintained it wasn't due to the workplace allegations but rather her feeling like it was time. But after keeping a low profile in the years since, she's back on the stage for her comedy show, Ellen's Last Stand…Up Tour .

And for her, it appears returning to her comedy roots is also a way to unpack the tumult from the show. After all, Ellen also admitted she "didn't know how to be a boss."

"I didn't go to business school," she continued. "I went to Charlie's Chuckle Hutt. The show was called Ellen and everybody was wearing T-shirts that said 'Ellen' and there were buildings on the Warner Brothers lot that said 'Ellen,' but I don't know that meant I should be in charge."

She also drew parallels to the 1998 cancelation of her sitcom Ellen , which came as a result of her c oming out as gay .

"For those of you keeping score, this is the second time I've been kicked out of show business," Ellen noted. "Eventually, they're going to kick me out for a third time because I'm mean, old, and gay."

More than that, however, Ellen expressed being in a difficult place, sharing insight while opening up about her mom Betty DeGeneres ' battle with dementia and her own struggle in this new chapter in her life.

"My mother doesn't know she's my mother," she explained, "and I'm trying to figure out who I am without my show."

"Sending love and support to Ellen and all of the employees of her show. All of my interactions with everyone from the show including ELLEN were supportive and fun! In that spirit I am praying all involved get the love and support they need," the actress wrote on Instagram , later updating her caption, "...lively debate happening in the comments. I welcome that. I also believe that all of the voices of her employees need to be heard. Past and present. Speaking truth to power is the only way change happens. My truth is everyone was kind to me. From the PAs to the producers. So yeah! I want all of those people to feel valued and heard. And no, people are NOT always kind to talent!"

When asked by  The Los Angeles Times to address the internet's reaction to her support for Ellen, she said , "I started that tweet off not undermining anyone else's experience. I wanted to only speak from my own experience. I have over 100 million people that follow me on Twitter, so not everyone is going to agree with me. And I'm not here to make everyone agree with me."

Stephen "tWitch" Boss

The late Ellen DeGeneres Show DJ told E! News  about his experience on the show, "You know, there hasn't been too many gigs where you feel it every day and build a genuine love from front to back. And the audience, being so happy to be there and ready to dance and ready to laugh and have a good time."

Ashton Kutcher

"I haven't spoken with @TheEllenShow and can only speak from my own experience," the actor tweeted . "She & her team have only treated me & my team w/ respect & kindness. She never pandered to celebrity which I always saw as a refreshing honesty. When things aren't right she handles it and fixes."

When someone replied, "Oh she treats billionaire A list guests well? You don't say," Kutcher wrote back , "1. I'm not a billionaire. 2. it extends to my team and people she didn't even know I work with."

"I know I can't speak for anyone else's experience besides my own but I want to acknowledge that I have only ever had positive takeaways from my time with Ellen & on the @theellenshow," the singer tweeted . "I think we all have witnessed the light & continual fight for equality that she has brought to the world through her platform for decades. Sending you love & a hug, friend @TheEllenShow."

"It's crazy to see my friend go thru what she's going thru publicly," the comedian shared on Instagram . "I have known Ellen for years and I can honestly say that she's one of the dopest people on the fucking planet. She has treated my family and my team with love and respect from day 1. The internet has become a crazy world of negativity....we are falling in love with peoples down fall. It's honestly sad...When did we get here? I stand by the ones that I know and that I love. Looking forward to the future where we get back to loving one another....this hate shit has to stop. Hopefully it goes out of style soon....This post is not meant to disregard the feelings of others and their experiences....It's simply to show what my experiences have been with my friend. Love you for life Ellen..."

"Hey Guys, I hope you are all keeping safe out there during these trying times," the DJ wrote on Instagram . "I have been getting calls asking me about the Ellen Degeneres Show and I would like to address the time I spent there. I was on air talent from 2003-2006 and from 2007 -2013. While I am grateful for the opportunity it afforded me, I did experience and feel the toxicity of the environment and I stand with my former colleagues in their quest to create a healthier and more inclusive workplace as the show moves forward."

On her Instagram , the Annie Hall  actress shared, "I ALWAYS ENJOYED MY VISITS TO THE ELLEN SHOW. I'VE SEEN HOW THE AUDIENCE EXUDES HAPPINESS AND GRATITUDE. SHE GIVES BACK TO SO MANY INCLUDING ME."

"Sorry but it comes from the top ⁦@TheEllenShow Know more than one who were treated horribly by her," the  Everybody Loves Raymond star tweeted .

"People love to take shots at people. They love to see people fall. How quickly so many forget. @TheEllenShow is a kind, thoughtful, courageous human being who stands for what is right and highlights on her show the best of us. She has helped change the views for equality,"  Justin Bieber 's manager tweeted . "Needed to say this as I know first hand how she helps so many when we are watching and when we are not. She isn't about what is popular she is about what is right. Sending love to Ellen today."

"I have been patiently waiting for someone with more authority than me to speak up about what a great human being @theellenshow is. I have been very lucky to be on that show many times and I can tell you that it is a very well run machine, everyone was super nice, not just to me but to each other and anyone involved," the polo player stated on Instagram. "I have seen Ellen act not just in her show but in public appearances in theaters where she is nice to absolutely everyone, the guy serving the coffee, the person in the elevator, the security guy and the owner of the venue." He continued, "Everyone loves her because that is who she is. She makes the world a better place for millions of people everyday and we cannot hit her because something may have not been perfect. No one is perfect, and we cannot control everything."

"So I stand for you my friend and I challenge all the amazing people that know you and call you a friend to say who you are. The world has become a very dangerous place because it seems that we cannot make anything right. If I am going to be criticized for defending someone that I think deserves to be defended then so be it. We are all so scared to say what we really think and it seems that we are only relevant if we say whatever the trending social media topic is. So... We love Ellen right?" he concluded.

The actor posted the "I Stand With Ellen" picture with the caption, "Love @TheEllenShow & @portiaderossi Always have. Always will."

Portia de Rossi

"To all our fans....we see you. Thank you for your support. #stopbotattacks," the  Arrested Development   captioned an "I Stand With Ellen" quote card.

The Australian radio host detailed his alleged experience with DeGeneres and her producers in a recent segment of his show. He described the encounter as "bizarre," adding, "I'm not blaming Ellen, because I didn't get to talk to her, because I wasn't allowed to. So I don't know whether she's a nice person or not. I wouldn't have a clue. But I can tell you the people who worked with her walked on eggshells the whole time."

"Unpopular opinion: I've worked for @TheEllenShow as a DJ, for her parties, for years and she has ALWAYS been respectful and kind to me," the artist tweeted .

NikkieTutorials

"Call me naive, but I kind of expected to be welcomed with confetti cannons: 'Welcome to The Ellen DeGeneres Show !' But instead I was greeted by an angry intern who was a bit overworked," the makeup artist s aid about her experience on the show. "I was expecting a Disney show, but got Teletubbies after dark."

Lena, our guide in Moscow was excellent. She was very knowledgable and could answer any question we had for her. We liked that she could pick up on our interests and take us places we might not have thought of to go. When we realized that one of the places we had chosen to see would probably not be that interesting to us, she was able to arrange entry to the Diamond Fund and the Armoury for us. Riding the Metro with Lena was a real adventure and a lot of fun. In Saint Petersburg we found Anna well versed in the history of the Tsars and in the Hermitage collection. Arkady in Veliky Novgorod was a very good guide and answered all of our questions with ease. Novgorod was perhaps a long way to go for a day trip, but we did enjoy it. Vasily was a great driver to have and kept us safe with good humour and skill. We enjoyed ourselves so much, my daughter says she is already planning to return. We would both have no hesistation to recommend ExpresstoRussia to anyone we know.

Just wanted to let you know that My grandson Bruno and I couldn´t have been more pleased with our week in Moscow (6/15 - 6/21). We were absolutely enchanted with the whole experience, including getting lost a couple of times in the Metro during our free time. Although both our guides (both Eleanas) were excellent, I would particularly commend the first one (she took us to the Tatiakov, the KGB tour, and to that beautiful cemetery where so many great Russian artists, authors, composers, musicians, militarists, and politicians are buried). Her knowledge is encyclopedic; and her understanding of today´s Russia as a product of its past was, for us, truly enlightening. I will be taking another tour in Russia, with my wife, within the next two or three years. I will be in touch with you when the time comes. Meanwhile, I will refer you to other potential visitors to Russia as I meet them.

Moscow, a City Like No Other

Moscow is Russia’s largest city with a population of between 12 and 13 million. It is also Europe’s largest city and when you visit Moscow, you can feel it. The layout and architecture of the city is eclectic, ranging from crooked, ancient streets and alleyways to wide, bustling boulevards, from medieval churches to Stalin skyscrapers and to modern, glass buildings towering over everything and of course in the center of it all is the Kremlin and the magnificent Red Square. Moscow is also home to a fantastic, efficient and very beautiful metro system – each station having its own special design. In fact, Express to Russia’s Moscow metro tours and excursions are some of our most popular attractions that we offer. On our Moscow tours, you will see this and more.

Moscow Tours centering on Russian History

Moscow has a long and interesting history and has been the capital of Russia in many of its different iterations – capital of the Grand Duchy of Moscow , the Russian Empire and of course the Soviet Union (who could ever forget the Soviet Union?). Moscow, was founded in the 12th century by Prince Yuri Dolgaruki (Yuri of the long arms – he really did have long arms!). From that time on, it was home to the Russian Tsars until Peter the Great moved the capital to St. Petersburg in 1703. The city has survived invasions and sieges from the Mongols, the Tartars, the Poles, Lithuanians and Napoleon but has always persevered. Our Moscow tours will enlighten you on this great history and give you insights into Muscovites and their unique culture. Our Moscow tours show you what the city is like today but also brings to life the past. Moscow never seems to sleep and is bursting with energy. A Moscow tour with Express to Russia is truly the best way of getting to know Russia’s largest and most vibrant city.

Frequently Asked Questions From Our Travelers

What is the best time to visit moscow.

Any time of year is fine depending on what you plan to do. Summertime is pleasantly warm, ideal for exploring the city and its vibrant atmosphere, but Moscow will be much busier and accommodation is more expensive. Winter can be quite cold but beautiful nonetheless, and this is unproblematic if you intend to spend most of your trip in museums and galleries. There are also various festivals and events organised throughout the year. For more information about the best time to visit, read our guide

How many days are enough in Moscow?

If you plan your itinerary strategically and aren’t averse to a packed schedule, you can cover Moscow’s main sights over a long weekend. Most popular attractions are in the city centre, and the Moscow Metro allows you to cover much ground in a small amount of time. Ensure that your accommodation is fairly central and book tickets in advance, so that you can make the most of your days. For an informative and well-organised day out, check out our Moscow day tours with options to suit all interests.

Do they speak English in Moscow?

As Russia’s capital city, tourists are well accommodated in Moscow. There should be English-speaking staff in restaurants, bars, hotels, shops and attractions in tourist hotspots, and there are also English-speaking tourist police. Transport services have English translations on their maps and English announcements via intercom; alternatively, order taxis from the Yandex Taxi app (Russian Uber), though it’s unlikely that your taxi driver will speak English. If you get stuck and cannot communicate, it’s fine to use Google Translate.

Is it safe to travel to Moscow?

It is no less safe to travel to Moscow than to any European city if you exercise common sense and look after your belongings. As with every city some regions can be more unsavoury than others, but no tourist attractions are located there. The traffic in Moscow is notorious, so exercise caution when crossing roads. Do not take unlicensed taxis; book in advance or take public transport, which is widespread and perfectly safe. If you encounter any problems, look for the special tourist police who can help you. Review: Neil Young & Crazy Horse strike heart of gold at tour-opening San Diego concert

Neil Young performing at SDSU on April 24, 2024.

The concert began with an epic, 15-minute version of ‘Cortez The Killer’ that featured extra lyrics recently unearthed by Young. Guitarist-singer Micah Nelson, Willie’s son, very ably assumed the role in Crazy Horse of Nils Lofgren, now on tour with Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band.

When Neil Young sang “rock and roll will never die” near the conclusion of his tour-opening LOVE EARTH concert with Crazy Horse Wednesday in San Diego, you believed him.

Those words, from his 1978 song, “Hey Hey My My (Into the Black),” sounded like a defiant vow in the face of possible obsolescence 46 years ago. Now, they are a statement of fact from a proud maverick who sounds more committed than ever, even — or, rather, especially — at a time when rock is increasingly becoming a niche genre pushed aside by formulaic pop, hip-hop and dance-music.

At 78, Young remains a staunch keeper of the flame whose passion for music burns as bright as ever. If anyone thinks this veteran singer, songwriter and guitarist is ready to kick back in his old age, he and his band immediately and convincingly refuted such notions with their powerful, nearly two-hour performance at SDSU’s Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre. (They are set to perform a second sold-out show at the same venue Thursday night.)

Young and his three-man band opened with “Cortez the Killer,” an epic number from their 1975 album, “Zuma.” But this was no sentimental journey down nostalgia lane, nor was it a tentative, shake-off-the-dust run through.

Their carefully calibrated version of “Cortez” built to a series of powerful climaxes Monday and lasted 15 minutes — nearly twice as long as the original on “Zuma.” The song began with an opening guitar jam that lasted 7 minutes before Young’s reedy vocals commenced. For good measure, near the conclusion of “Cortez,” he sang — for the first time anywhere in concert — a missing verse he recently came upon that had been cut from the 1975 recording.

The unearthed lyrics provided additional depth and a palpable sense of despair to Young’s tour de force song about Hernán Cortez, the bloody Spanish conqueror of Mexico’s Aztec Empire: I floated on the water / I ate that ocean wave / Two weeks after the slaughter / I was living in a cave / They came too late to get me / But there’s no one here to set me free / From this rocky grave / To that snowed-out ocean wave.

The next selection was the buoyant “Cinnamon Girl,” a choice cut from 1969’s “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere,” the first album Young and Crazy Horse made together. It clocked in at a crisp three minutes.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse performed at the Open Air Theatre at San Diego State April 24, 2024.

The rest of the concert included several other extended jams, with “Down by the River” and “Love and Only Love” both clocking in at a glorious 16 minutes (but not lasting one second too long). Conversely, Young’s tender solo acoustic versions of “Comes a Time,” “Heart of Gold” and “Human Highway” were each delivered with admirable concision.

The manner in which he alternated between longer and shorter selections served as a master class on how to pace a concert to build momentum and achieve maximum dynamic tension and release.

The final encore was an eight-minute rendition of “My My Hey Hey (Into the Black),” whose line There’s more to the picture than meets the eye could be a synopsis of Young’s career and his dogged determination to do things his way, every time, no matter what the trends of the day may be.

At SDSU, Young and his longtime Crazy Horse compadres — bassist/singer Billy Talbot and drummer Ralph Molina, both 80 — were focused and in sync from start to finish. They were joined by guitarist/singer Micah Nelson, 33, who on Monday had played a key role accompanying his father, Willie Nelson, at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park.

Willie Nelson performs at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park on Monday, April 22, 2024.

Review: Willie Nelson’s San Diego concert defined, not defied, the passing of time. He turns 91 on April 29.

The American music-master and his band warmed up a damp, cool evening at The Shell. David Sanger, the drummer in opening act Asleep At The Wheel, took the ferry back to his family’s home in Coronado after the show.

April 23, 2024

Micah Nelson was performing in place of Crazy Horse charter member Nils Lofgren, who is now on tour in The E Street Band with his other longtime employer, Bruce Springsteen. Those are big shoes to fill, but Nelson was so in sync with Young you’d think they had been musical partners for decades.

The stage was bedecked with the giant, faux Fender guitar amplifiers, speaker cabinets and road cases Young and Crazy Horse used on their 1978 Rust Never Sleeps tour. There were no video screens on the stage, the better for the audience — which included basketball great Bill Walton and Las Vegas Raiders NFL team owner Mark Davis — to focus completely on the music at hand.

The SDSU concert — the start of Young and Crazy Horse’s first major tour together in a decade — came a year after Young’s mesmerizing solo concert here at The Shell. Wednesday’s performance was even more mesmerizing, in large part because of the musical empathy between the four musicians.

Review: Neil Young delivered singular San Diego solo concert by digging deep for new/old musical gold

The two-time Rock & Roll Hall of Fame inductee performed his first San Diego solo concert in 31 years, mixing classics with deep, deep album cuts

When they locked into a groove, which was often, they seemed to be of one mind. And it’s difficult to think of any other rock band of any vintage that can gain as much traction from so many slow-paced songs.

With few exceptions, Young’s biting guitar solos contained a minimum of notes, but he made each one count, repeatedly going into a zone where feeling and intensity trump quantity. Or, to invoke the title of Young’s 1988 album: “This Note’s For You.”

Apart from a heartfelt spoken tribute to the late David Briggs — the producer of many of Young’s albums with (and without) Crazy Horse — Young’s comments to the audience were along the lines of: “Thank you” and “How ya doin’?”

Otherwise, he let his music speak for him, and it spoke volumes.

by Em Casalena April 25, 2024, 12:40 pm

Neil Young’s highly-anticipated Love Earth Tour just kicked off with Crazy Horse in San Diego, California yesterday at Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre. As always, Young puts on one hell of a show and hasn’t slowed down at this point in his six-decade career.

Young performed some of his greatest hits, including “Cortez The Killer” and “Heart Of Gold” to fans’ delight. He performed a couple of deep cuts as well.

Young and Crazy Horse killed the performance, and it’s clear that both the legend and the band have quite a bit of pent-up creativity. They’ve just put out a new collaborative album as well, FU##IN’ UP , which was released just a few days ago on April 20. An all-format version will be released tomorrow, April 26.

Neil Young’s Love Earth Tour Setlist

Curious about what you can expect from Neil Young and Crazy Horse’s current tour? Here’s the setlist from last night’s show:

1. “Cortez The Killer”

2. “Cinnamon Girl”

3. “Scattered (Let’s Think About Livin’)”

4. “Don’t Cry No Tears”

5. “Down By The River”

6. “The Losing End (When You’re On)”

7. “Everybody Knows This Is Nowhere”

8. “Powderfinger”

9. “Love And Only Love”

10. “Comes A Time” (Solo/Acoustic Performance)

11. “Heart Of Gold” (Solo/Acoustic Performance)

12. “Human Highway” (Solo/Acoustic Performance)

13. “Don’t Be Denied”

14. “Hey Hey, My My (Into The Black)”

While fans shouldn’t expect Young’s setlist to be exactly the same for all of the Love Earth Tour’s upcoming dates, last night’s show in Cali gave a pretty solid preview of what fans can expect from the rest of the trek.

Young and Crazy Horse will perform another set tonight at Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre before traveling to Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Alabama, and onward towards Canada.

Neil Young Launches Love Earth Tour: Set List and Video

Neil Young launched his 2024 Love Earth Tour with Crazy Horse in San Diego, California on Wednesday night.

Young performed a number of his classics, including “Cortez the Killer,” “Cinnamon Girl,” “Powderfinger” and “Heart of Gold.”

You can view videos from the show, as well as a complete set list, below.

Young recently put out a new album with Crazy Horse, titled FU##IN’ UP, which was released on limited edition color vinyl on Record Store Day , April 20, and will get an all-format release on April 26.

“In the spirit it’s offered…made this for the Horse lovers,” Young previously said of the new record. “I can’t stop it. The horse is runnin’. What a ride we have. I don’t want to mess with the vibe. I am so happy to have this to share.”

Neil Young’s Next Stops

From here, Young will bring his tour to over two dozen American and Canadian cities, including his hometown of Toronto. He’ll perform in outdoor venues only, a precaution he decided to adopt following the pandemic.

“We gotta be careful,” Young said on a fan Zoom earlier this month [via Rolling Stone ]. “I don’t know the stats on it, but I imagine if you look at a regular group of 15,000 or 20,000 people, just randomly from around the world, and then look at 15,000 or 20,000 people that all went to a show, and how many of them got Covid, I think you’d found people that went to a show inside have a lot more of a chance of getting sick. I don’t really need to do that. Willie Nelson told me he’s only playing outside now. I felt that was a good idea, so that’s what I’m doing.”

Neil Young and Crazy Horse's "Love Earth" tour coming to Colorado this summer

By Austen Erblat

Updated on: April 23, 2024 / 3:01 PM MDT / CBS Colorado

Neil Young is making his return to the Denver area this summer after not having played in Colorado since 2016.

He and Crazy Horse are set to play Fiddler's Green Amphitheatre in Greenwood Village on July 31. The last time Young played in Colorado was in October 2016 in Telluride, where he owns a barn he rebuilt. That barn is also home to a recording studio he called "Studio in the Clouds" where he recorded his 2019 album, "Colorado."

That album marked the reunion of Young and Crazy Horse after a 7-year hiatus. The group has played together for a combined 50 years.

Neil Young preforms at Denver University's Magness Arena, promoting his new album, "Fork in the Road." Young delivered classics and songs from his new album in a two and a half hour show. Opening for Young was the Neville Brothers and Everest. Tim Rasmuss

"In the spirit it's offered...made this for the Horse lovers. I can't stop it. The horse is runnin'. What a ride we have. I don't want to mess with the vibe. I am so happy to have this to share," Young said in a statement about the tour.

Doors open at 6:30 p.m. and the show is set to start at 7:30 p.m.

Presales began Tuesday but general ticket sales don't start until 10 a.m. Friday. You can buy tickets at AXS.com .

When  Neil Young announced his tour with  Crazy Horse back in February, he didn’t announce much else. All fans really knew was that Young and his longtime on-and-off backing band would play 16 shows (since increased to 28) with  Willie Nelson ‘s son  Micah taking over guitar duties for  Nils Lofgren who is touring with Bruce Springsteen & The E Street Band . Those who showed up to his tour opener on Wednesday in San Diego rolled the dice on what they might get, and they were rewarded for their faith with a night full of classic songs, a “new” verse on an old favorite, lengthy bouts of improvisation, and a solo acoustic interlude.

As the crew drew back a curtain to reveal the oversized amplifiers and road cases from the 1978  Rust Never Sleeps tour (H/T  Rolling Stone ), Young took the stage at the  Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre  alongside Nelson, drummer Ralph Molina , and bassist  Billy Talbot . Armed with Old Black, Young started the show off with a bang on a 14-minute version of “Cortez the Killer”. Amid the tight, heavily distorted jamming, Young unveiled a lost verse for the 1975  Zuma favorite which was left off the original recording because the studio console briefly lost power. Young recently stumbled upon the original lyrics and revealed earlier this month that audiences would hear the song as it was originally written.

“I floated on the water,” Young sang. “I ate that ocean wave/Two weeks after the slaughter/I was living in a cave/They came too late to get me/But there’s no one here to set me free/From this rocky grave/To that snowed-out ocean wave.”

Young and Crazy Horse delivered a one-two punch of classics by following up “Cortez the Killer” with “Cinnamon Girl”. After that came “Scattered (Let’s Think About Livin’)” from 1996’s  Broken Arrow , which proved the newest song played all night. The band dug deep for lengthy runs through “Down by the River” (15 minutes) and “Love and Only Love” (16 minutes), while between jams Young romped through “Don’t Cry No Tears”, “Everybody Knows This is Nowhere”, and “Powderfinger” with vigor unexpected from a near-octogenarian.

Following the lengthy “Love and Only Love”, Young eschewed his bandmates and strapped on his harmonica for a solo interlude. The acoustic-armed Young led singalongs on “Comes a Time”, “Heart of Gold”, and “Human Highway” before bringing the band back out to stomp through a finale of “Don’t Be Denied” and “Hey Hey, My My (Into the Black)”.

Neil Young & Crazy Horse return to Cal Coast Credit Union Open Air Theatre tonight, April 25th, for their second of two sold-out shows.  Check out some videos of the tour opener from Todd Norris below.
