Want to travel in Iceland without a car? Although Iceland has no trains, it is possible to explore the country by bus, ferry, and plane. To do so, it is advisable to plan in advance, especially when traveling during the wintertime.

Strætó - THE ICELANDIC PUBLIC TRANSPORTATION System

The public yellow bus in Iceland

Strætó, the public bus, is recognizable by its yellow color

Strætó operates buses in Reykjavík and around the country. On www.straeto.is you can check timetables, plan routes, download the straeto app and buy tickets.

There is no hop-on / hop-off bus pass available that spans around the whole island. The bus network, however, is extensive and makes it possible to travel the whole circle. In addition to strætó, local bus networks operate in the East and the Westfjords of Iceland. Pay attention to the summer- and winter schedule when planning your trip.

Iceland Express

Excellent trip that fit all the highlights of Iceland into 3 days, from glacier hikes to lagoon rides and lava fields, while not feeling rushed. Note most excursions are optional add ons. The free day on either side of the driving days was great as we were able to explore more. Tour guide was very knowledgeable, friendly and passionate about Iceland. The small size of the tour was great as we got to know each other and become good mates over the few days. Highly recommend this tour for those wanting to see as much of Iceland in a few days.

8 Day Around Iceland Winter Minibus Tour

Fabulous 8 day winter tour round Iceland, packed with adventures and plenty of photo stops. Our excellent guide John was very informative and kept everyone to a tight schedule so we could maximise how many stops we could take. We had a great time with a lovely group of people and I would definitely recommend it.

Excellent tour operator that I wouldn't hesitate to recommend to anyone interested in an adventure in Iceland! I went during the winter and I really appreciated having an experienced tour guide/van driver who knew how to navigate the snow/ice/wind safely! I know I definitely couldn't have done that myself. Icelandic Adventure (2023) Tour

Icelandic Adventure (2023)

Iceland coach / bus tour reviews.

It was very informative. The sites spectacular.
The Arctic Adventure 7-day Tour is an unforgettable journey through Iceland’s pristine landscapes. We were fortunate enough to experience it all, the breathtaking waterfalls all along our journey, the geothermal pools, the Northern Lights at our stay at the Wilderness Center, ( Norðurdalur in Fljótsdalur, a MUST see and stay hideaway) hike a glacier, explore ice caves, tour the stunning Snaefellsnes Peninsula, each day unfolds like a mythical saga— Our tour guide, Sigurður Magnússon possessed an essence of knowledge, kindness, and friendliness with an astute grasp of the history of Iceland, adding to our wonderful vacation in Iceland. His passion for wanting to provide us with the best possible experience and take away lasting memories was evident in his captivating narratives along the route and at each destination. He was able to combine facts, fables and mystery into each story. We appreciated his expertise and attention to detail.
We had great time in Iceland. Our tour guide Peter was spontaneous and knowledgeable about his country. He made sure that we could witness the Aurora Borealis and we did! We highly. Recommend this tour to anyone who wants to visit Iceland. Our accommodations were also wonderful. Thanks GJ travel.

Buses in Iceland

  • Getting around

Buses in Iceland

While the most common way to travel around Iceland is to rent a car or book an organised tour , the country's bus network can also be a good way to explore the country.

Iceland has a good bus system, although it isn't the most common way of getting around, as it is less flexible than  renting a car and driving around the island. What's more, the routes vary according to the weather, and it is only in summer that the bus network really covers the entire country, even reaching some destinations like the Highlands by 4x4 bus.

You can check out the different routes on the following map of Iceland's bus network .

In addition to these lines, there are public buses dedicated to more specific regions like  Lake Myvatn and East Iceland  and the Westfjords .

Buses in Reykjavik

Timetables and frequency.

Reykjavik 's yellow city buses run daily from around 6:30 am to 1 am, varying by a few minutes depending on the line and the day of the week (weekends start later). On Fridays and Saturdays, there are also night buses in Reykjavik which operate from 1 am to 4:30 am. In general city buses run every 15 to 25 minutes.

The public bus network in Reykjavik has around 30 lines which cover the metropolitan area of the city, known as Greater Reykjavik. You can have a look at the different stops in the city via this map of bus routes .

Ticket prices

The price of a single bus ticket in Reykjavik is 470 kr ( US$ 3.30) (it doubles to 940 kr ( US$ 6.70) for night buses ). For disabled passengers, seniors over 67 years old and young people between 6 and 17 years old, the price is halved to 235 kr ( US$ 1.70). Children under 6 years old travel for free. As well as single tickets, there are monthly passes and multi-tickets for up to 20 journeys which may be of interest to visitors spending longer in the city.

Tickets can be bought on the bus in cash with exact change , or alternatively by card in one of the city's supermarkets or through the official Straeto application .

All buses in Reykjavik are operated by Straeto BS, a bus company run by Reykjavik City and neighboring municipalities. Straeto BS network consists of 27 bus routes in the capital city and 18 routes outside of the city. There are no other public transport networks in the city, making Straeti the only way to get around Reykjavik without a car or a bicycle.

Reykjavik is an easy city to navigate.

The name of the company ‘Straeto’ is short for ‘Strætisvagn’ which directly translates to ‘Street Car’. The word straeto is so embedded in the Icelandic language that Icelanders call public buses everywhere in the world stræto. The city buses in Reykjavik are easily recognizable due to their cheerful yellow color.

When can I get the bus in Reykjavík?

A bus stop in Reykjavik.

The buses in Reykjavik start running around 6:30 on weekdays, 7:30 on Saturdays, and 9:30 on Sundays and public holidays. Most routes stop running shortly before or just after midnight, with the exception of the night bus routes which run on Fridays and Saturdays, more information on the night buses can be found later in this article.

To find out which bus you need to catch you can use the Straeto website’s handy route planner , which is also available in the app, or the timetables for each bus route.

Reykjavik's buses run at night on weekends.

To use the route planner you simply have to input the location you’ll be departing from, your destination and if you want, your preferred time of departure or arrival. The route planner will then show you several journeys to your destination.

The timetables show what time of day the buses stop at specific locations. Detailed information on individual schedules can be seen at each bus stop and searched on the website bus.is .

Most routes have buses running at least every half-hour. Journeys are more frequent during peak hours, which are between 7-9 AM and 3-6 PM on weekdays, with buses departing every 15 minutes.

A bus travelling in Reykjavik.

Routes 1 and 6 have more journeys than other routes, on a normal weekday those buses depart every 10 minutes during peak times, every 15 minutes the rest of the day and every half hour in the evening.

The following days of the year have unusual operating hours; On January 1st and December 25th the buses which drive from Reykjavík to other regions don’t run. On December 24th and December 31st the buses stop running at 3 PM. On other public holidays, the buses operate on a Sunday schedule.

A bus pulls up on Saebraut in Iceland.

Straeto bus stops are easy to identify, they are all marked with the Straeto BS logo, a red and yellow S. Some bus stops are only a pole with the logo on top and timetables attached, others have a shelter for you to wait for the bus in.

To find out where the nearest bus stop is you can search on the website or check the live map in the Straeto app, which also allows you to track the location of all buses.

Harpa Concert Hall is connected to many bus routes.

It’s not guaranteed that one bus will get you where you need to go, you might have to transfer between buses. There are several bus stops in the capital region that are specifically designed to connect routes from across the bus network for easy transfer.

These stops are Fjordur, Asgardur, Hamraborg, Mjodd and Artun. The journeys are strategically planned so that buses arrive simultaneously to make switching buses easy for commuters.

The bus stops Hlemmur , Spongin and Haholt are also connection stops but waiting times might be longer there since their timetables aren’t specifically designed to make transfers smoother.

The stop which connects the city buses and the buses heading outside the capital region is Mjodd, in the Breidholt neighborhood in Reykjavik.

How do I pay for the bus in Reykjavík?

Reykjavik City Buses are regular and reliable.

There are three ways to pay for the bus in Reykjavík: Cash, bus card, or on the KLAPP App .

Children under the age of 6 and legally blind people don’t have to pay to ride the bus.

You can pay the bus fare in cash, each bus has a fare collecting box next to the driver. At the time this is written (Fall 2022) the fare for an adult is 490 ISK. For pensioners, disabled people and children aged 6-17 the fare is 245 ISK. Please note that the drivers cannot give you change, you must either have the exact amount or overpay.

To check the current price of fares, go to the Straeto website .

Hallgrimskirkja is the tallest building in Iceland.

A paper card can be purchased online and picked up (and bought) at various vendors throughout the city such as swimming pools, 10-11 stores and Straeto information desks. The full list of locations where you can buy bus tickets is available here .

One bus ticket equals one fare within the city limits. You can pay the fare with a KLAPP ten card which is a bus pass with 10 tickets, perhaps the best choice for visitors to the city. They are available at some of the aforementioned designated retail locations, further information is found here .

City buses can be used to reach quite a distance from Reykjavik.

You can also use a bus smart card to ride the bus, this is the best option for those staying in Reykjavík for a longer stretch of time. These can also be purchased on the website . When it comes to the smart cards, you can either buy a card that lasts for one month or one that lasts for a whole year. These are plastic cards that can be scanned when you enter the bus. When you buy a ticket on the app, likewise your phone can be scanned when entering the bus to verify the ticket.

How do I use the Straeto app?

The Straeto app is available in the App Store for Apple devices and on Google Play for Android devices, the app does not work on Windows Phones. It can be set to either Icelandic or English.

The Straeto app is a heaven-send for anyone who’s trying to use public transport in Iceland. The app allows you to buy tickets, plan routes, view real-time updates of your bus’ location and even listen to podcasts.

To use the app you simply download it, register with your phone number and card details (the app does not accept American Express) and you can start riding the bus.

Buses can be tracked in Iceland via an app.

When you buy a ticket it isn’t automatically activated so you can buy tickets and save them for later. They will continue to be available under the ‘My Tickets’ section of the app. Once activated, a single-fare ticket is valid for 75 minutes.

You need an internet connection to buy tickets from the app. Most buses in Reykjavík have free wifi, but it’s better to purchase tickets beforehand and not rely on the bus wifi.

The app also has the option of buying group tickets for up to 20 people.

The app offers a Live Map where you can track your bus in real-time, as well as service updates, which takes all the guesswork out of riding the bus. Information on where your bus is and when it will arrive and your ticket are all in one place, so you can relax and enjoy listening to one of the podcasts available in the app.

Can I use public transport late at night in Reykjavik?

Reykjavik's skylkine on New Years Eve cannot be missed.

Strarto runs a night bus service late at night on Fridays and Saturdays when Reykjavik’s vibrant nightlife is at its height.

There are six routes 101, 102, 103, 105, 106, and 107 each does three journeys a night between 01:20-03:50. They all depart from either Reykjavik City Hall or Hlemmur , in downtown Reykjavik, and drive away from the city center, no buses run towards the city center after midnight.

You can catch the night bus from other locations than where they depart from but there is no set time table for when the bus arrives at those stops. We recommend tracking their whereabouts through the app. You can check the night bus schedule on the website .

The fare for a night bus ride is the same when using the smart card, app or KLAPP ten card. However, the cost is 1000 ISK if using cash or credit card.

Reykjavik Bus Etiquette

The inside of a Reykjavik City Bus.

You can only get on and off the bus at designated stops. The bus might not stop unless you clearly indicate your intention to board, for example by sticking your hand out to flag down the bus. If a bus displays the text 'Er ekki á leið' it means the bus is not in service.

Unless you have a bicycle, baby carriage or any other reason to enter at the middle of the bus, you should enter through the front doors. You should have your payment ready before boarding the bus.

You are not allowed to exit at the front of the bus, instead use one of the two rear doors. Iceland can be very slippery so take care when stepping off the bus.

You are allowed to bring bicycles and suitcases on the bus, however, wheelchairs and baby prams have priority in the designated area at the middle of the bus.

Iceland's buses can take you to less touristy areas.

There is space for one wheelchair on each bus. The wheelchair user must be able to get on and off the bus by themselves or have someone with them to assist.

Please note that although many do, drivers are not required to speak English and might not be able to provide you with information in any other language than Icelandic. Make sure you have all the information you need before your journey.

Scooters, rollerblades and skateboards must be carried if you bring them on the bus, they cannot be used during the ride.

Pets are allowed on city buses under the following conditions. Pets have to get on the bus through the back sets of doors and stay at the back while they ride the bus. The pet’s caretaker must be over 18 years of age to be allowed to bring the pet on the bus and each person is only allowed to bring one pet. Dogs must be on a lead, other pets must be secured in a cage.

Pets are allowed on the bus outside peak times

Pets are not allowed on the bus at the busiest times of day, 7:00-9:00 AM and 3:00-6:00 PM on weekdays. Guide dogs are exempt from these rules.

Be mindful of other passengers, there are priority seats for those less-able to stand, if you sit in one of those, be ready to offer it to someone who needs it more. Please note that Icelanders are usually quiet on the bus (unless you happen to encounter a group of pre-school children on a field trip). Do not disturb the peace by playing music on the bus. If you're having a phone call on the bus, do not use the speakers on your phone.

You are not allowed to eat or smoke on the bus in Reykjavik.

Bus Travel Iceland – #1 Guide to Explore The Beautiful Country by Bus

bus travel Iceland

When it comes to discovering the awe-inspiring landscapes and natural wonders of Iceland, one mode of travel stands out as both convenient and doable: bus travel Iceland . This article takes you on a virtual journey through the captivating beauty of Iceland , highlighting why traveling by bus throughout this Nordic Island nation is ideal.

Benefits of Bus Travel Iceland

Opting for bus travel Iceland brings numerous advantages. It’s not only budget-friendly but also an easy way to get around this beautiful country without driving yourself. Buses offer comfortable seating, large windows for optimal sightseeing, and the opportunity to connect with fellow travelers.  In Iceland, you’ll notice that the buses are new and quite nice in comparison to so many other locations.

Planning Your Bus Adventure

Before embarking on your Icelandic bus journey, plan your route meticulously . I use Rome2Rio as one of my primary research tools , but you’ll want to find the actual company you are booking with to determine accurate schedules and pickup locations. Research the destinations you wish to visit, their schedules, and the duration of each ride.

Choosing Your Destinations

Choosing Your Destinations - bus travel Iceland

Iceland boasts a long list of attractions, from the iconic Golden Circle to the serene Blue Lagoon to Diamond Beach .  Prioritize your must-visit spots and plan your bus itinerary accordingly. You may choose a tour that takes you to each one by bus rather than just on the traditional local bus lines. This allows you also to pick and choose tours where you are amongst like-minded people wanting to see the same sights.

Navigating the Bus Routes

Iceland’s bus network is well-developed, connecting major cities to remote areas. The routes are designed to showcase the island’s diverse landscapes, allowing you to witness glaciers, volcanoes, and fjords in one trip.

Booking Your Tickets

Booking your bus tickets in advance is advisable, especially during peak tourist seasons. Online platforms and bus terminals offer convenient ways to secure your seat. It’s easiest to book your tickets online, and on many occasions, your tickets will be cheaper if you do so.

I highly recommend purchasing a Reykjavik City card while you tour this beautiful capital city.  The card lasts for 24 , 48 , or 72 hours of unlimited travel on city buses which will also give you admission to major attractions as well as discounts at a variety of shops and restaurants.

Preparing for Your Bus Travel Iceland Adventure

Before embarking on your journey, always pack according to Iceland’s unpredictable weather!  This country will require you to dress in layers.  Bring your waterproof clothing, sturdy hiking boots, an umbrella, a coat for the season, and, of course, a reliable camera to capture the mesmerizing sights.

Chasing the Northern Lights

Iceland is one of the best places to witness the mesmerizing Northern Lights. Imagine gazing at the dancing colors in the night sky as you stand in awe of this natural phenomenon. While they say you can see them in Reykjavik, this is certainly not the best way to see them.  There is a ton of ambient light from the city, so make sure you head to the north to those more remote areas for the best viewing.

You can enjoy the lavish lifestyle and stay in a Golden Circle Dome for a few nights to make sure you see them.

Golden Circle Dome

Or, you can hop on a yacht tour that can take you out on the water to lead you away from the major city lights.  They are best seen in the winter, so pack your parka and head on out to those darker areas to see the magic happen.

Encountering Icelandic Wildlife

Bus travel Iceland gives you the opportunity to spot the country’s unique wildlife, including puffins, reindeer, and arctic foxes. Keep your camera ready for those rare, close-up shots, as you never know when they’ll pop out at you.

Discovering Charming Villages

Explore quaint Icelandic villages that seem to be frozen in time. Engage with friendly locals, learn about their traditions, and immerse yourself in the island’s rich culture.  Head on over to Vik or a smaller town to experience the local life.

Exploring National Parks

Iceland’s national parks showcase the country’s pristine beauty. From Thingvellir’s historical significance to Vatnajokull’s glacier views , each park offers something extraordinary.

Take in a Bit of Dark Tourism

While you are there, make sure to check out a bit of the dark tourism in Iceland . There’s plenty of dark history to keep you entertained throughout the country, so why not drop by a few of the off-the-beaten-path sites ?

Soaking in Geothermal Hot Springs

A visit to Iceland isn’t complete without a dip in its geothermal hot springs. Imagine unwinding in the soothing waters surrounded by stunning landscapes.  The Blue Lagoon or Sky Lagoon are phenomenal places to swim or wander around in, grab a facial, a drink, or both, and feel the amazing effects take hold.

Soaking in Geothermal Hot Springs

Captivating Waterfalls

Iceland boasts a collection of stunning waterfalls, including the iconic Gullfoss and Seljalandsfoss . Feel the mist on your face as you witness these natural wonders up close.  I can say I’ve never seen any waterfall in nature as impressive as these.

Unearthing Icelandic History

Delve into Iceland’s history by visiting ancient sites, such as the settlement of Borgarnes and the Viking World Museum . These sites provide insights into the island’s rich past.

Sampling Local Cuisine

Indulge in Icelandic cuisine, from hearty lamb stew to fresh seafood. Trying local dishes is an essential part of immersing yourself in the country’s culture.  The locals are quite fond of some rather strange items, so I’d say try it and then find the local pizza place 😉

Folklore and Mythology

Iceland is steeped in folklore and mythology. Learn about hidden people, trolls, and ancient legends that have shaped the island’s storytelling traditions.

Respecting Nature and Culture

As you explore Iceland, remember to respect its fragile ecosystems and cultural heritage. Responsible tourism ensures that future generations can enjoy the island’s beauty.

Conclusion:

In conclusion, bus travel Iceland offers an unforgettable adventure through a land of wonders. From the mystical Northern Lights to the charming villages, every moment is an opportunity to create lasting memories and always Travel Till You Drop .

Iceland Ringroad

Traveling on iceland’s ring road by bus.

Not every road trip has to be done by car. For those who prefer to be driven rather than to drive themselves, buses are a wonderful option in Iceland. There are well-developed bus lines along the Ring Road as well as in larger cities.

Can I travel Iceland’s Ring Road by bus?

Yes, you can. However, there are a few things to consider. Buses do not run in a 5-minute interval, so it’s important to check the schedule ahead of time. In addition, bus services in Iceland operate on both summer and winter schedules. During the winter, connections are severely limited.

Most bus companies divide the Ring Road into four parts: West (Reykjavík and surroundings), North (Akureyri, Hsavik & Myvatn), East (The fjords, Höfn and surroundings) and South (Vík, Jökulsarlon). Each route is usually served at least once a day, but buses may be cancelled in bad weather. During the summer, there are often 2 or 3 buses a day.

How much does it cost to take the bus in Iceland and how do you pay?

The cost of the round trip depends on how far you want to travel and which company you use. For example, IcelandByBus offers an all-inclusive ticket for 33,000ISK (230€), which allows you to circumnavigate the entire island in one direction. Alternatively, they also offer a West and East ticket, which allows you to travel the corresponding half-circle. These tickets cost 20,000ISK (135€) and 39,500ISK (270€), respectively. There is also a Highland Pass that takes you to the highlands for 12,500ISK (85€).

Reykjavik Excursions currently offers seven different passes:

  • Hiking on your own – 12,500ISK (85€)
  • Circle – 42,000ISK (280€)
  • Combo – 58,000ISK (390€)
  • Beautiful South – 24,500ISK (165€)
  • Beautiful South Circle – 22,000ISK (150€)
  • Highlights – 46,500ISK (310€)
  • Highlands – 44,000ISK (295€)

In addition, you can also book and customize individual sections here. For example, the route from Reykjavik to Vik costs 7500ISK (50€). Here you can find all the tours that Reykjavik Excursions offers.

Another option is the buses from Straeto. These buses offer inner-city bus rides in Reykjavik, but also rides across the island. You can find a very detailed price list here. A trip from Reykjavik to Akureyri, for example, costs just under 60€ and a trip to the Jökulsárlón Glacier Lagoon is about 68€. The buses stop at many popular destinations, but as far as I know, a complete circumnavigation of the island is not possible with Straeto as there is no connection between the northeast and southeast!

All companies offer payment by credit card. However, it is still advisable to book ahead, ideally through the website of the respective provider. With Straeto buses, it is quite common to get on and off dynamically. With Sterna and RE, the tours are often planned in advance, and those who want to ride along on a whim may be out of luck.

What else do I need to consider when taking the bus in Iceland?

Not much, but there are 1-2 peculiarities to keep in mind. For one thing, when taking inner-city rides, always position yourself at the bus stop where the driver can see you. Especially when it’s raining or snowing, tourists like to hide in the shelters, and the bus just drives by them. It always helps to look out or otherwise make yourself noticeable. Most bus drivers are pretty good at spotting passengers at bus stops.

Furthermore, as a hiker in Iceland, you can flag down a passing bus to stop. So, if you’re not keen on sticking strictly to the schedule and are feeling adventurous, you can hope to catch a passing bus along a particular route. You can pay directly to the driver, and off you go.

Similarly, in Iceland, you can ask the bus drivers to drop you off at a spot that isn’t an official stop. If you ask nicely, the driver will be happy to drop you off at any spot of your choice. However, you should be a little cautious, as often there won’t be another bus for the next 24 hours, so be prepared for an overnight stay. If you’re traveling with a tent and sleeping bag, you have the freedom to choose, but if you’re reliant on a hotel, you should check the area beforehand and possibly book a room.

Summer and Winter schedules for buses in Iceland

During the winter, buses operate on a significantly reduced schedule, so it’s essential to check ahead of time whether your intended travel route is feasible during the specific season. The highland roads are also closed to buses in winter, so highland tours are not offered. It’s best to check with your chosen provider in advance and generally pay attention to weather conditions . You can check the current weather, weather warnings, and forecasts for Iceland at any time here.

Buses in Reykjavik and Akureyri

For a city trip, you don’t need a rental car or bus. If you want to experience the city, you should explore it on foot, which is easy to do in all the cities in Iceland.

However, if you want to travel to the suburbs or have booked a hotel far, far away, you’ll be glad not to have to walk the transit routes every time and can instead use the inner-city buses. Straeto offers these buses, and the yellow buses are easy to recognize. A ride costs 400 kroner, which is just under 3€, and you can ride in one direction as long as you like. The buses operate in 15 or 30-minute intervals, and the fare must be paid in cash. Only the buses that go to the countryside have a card reader for credit cards. The main terminal in Reykjavik is called Hlemmur and is located in Reykjavik’s city center.

If you’re in Akureyri, you can even enjoy a free inner-city bus. You can view the timetable and stops on this page . The buses operate from 6 am to 11 pm on weekdays and from 12 pm to 6 pm on weekends and holidays.

Experience reports on bus travel in Iceland

I have only taken the city buses in Reykjavik a few times and otherwise have always traveled on the island with a rental car. I never had any problems and always found the rides pleasant. The rides to or from the airport were also always good.

Many friends and acquaintances have taken trips with Reykjavik Excursions, and the feedback has always been very positive. The buses were always punctual, clean, and in perfect technical condition. Some loyal Iceland travelers also told me that despite their vast experience, they often prefer to switch to the bus instead of renting a car because the drivers know their way around better, and you arrive more relaxed. So, if you’re planning to go to the highlands, consider whether a day trip might be an option.
