Beechworth, The Goldrush and The Kelly Gang

Gold was discovered in the same town of Beechworth at Spring Creek in February, 1852. Within 11 months 8,000 prospective gold hunters turned up in Beechworth turning Beechworth into quite the bustling hub.

The wealth that was built during the Gold Rush resulted in Beechworth being built and many of these buildings still stand today.

By 1857, over 20,000 from around the globe had made Beechworth home enabling a bank, school, hotels, a prison, churches, shops and a hospital. This small rural spot was turned into a bustling regional center.

Beechworth remains the most well preserved Gold mining town, with 32 of the buildings listed in the National Trust.

Ned Kelly, Australia’s most famous Bush Ranger, has strong ties to Beechworth. In fact, there are many tributes to the Kelly Gang around Beechworth today, including a walking tour but more on that later.

If Ned Kelly interests you, you might want to attend the Annual Beechworth Ned Kelly Weekend. It is held on the first weekend of August every year.

Back to Ned Kelly! Ned took the stand in the Beechworth Courthouse in August of 1880. Kelly was held in the Beechworth Gaol and charged in the Courthouse on three robbery charges.

Getting to Beechworth

beechworth tourist information

Public Transport

Beechworth is accessible via the Vline train and the bus. The train to Wangaratta departments Melbourne’s Southern Cross Station three times a day and takes just under 3 hours.

From Wangaratta you can take the bus into the center of town to the corner of Ford Street and Camp Street. The bus trip takes half an hour and departs three times a day.

More information can be found on the V/Line website

Beechworth is approximately a three hour drive north of Melbourne. From Melbourne you head north on the Hume Highway and take the B500 exit towards Beechworth/Bright.

If you are interested in Ned Kelly, you might choose to stop in at Glenrowan on the way, check out the place of the “Last Stand” and the HUGE Ned Kelly statue.

If you’re planning on visiting Beechworth on the way from Sydney to Melbourne, Beechworth is approximately 7 hours from Sydney and 4 and a half hours from Canberra.

If you are visiting and do not have a car, it is very easy to hire a car from both Melbourne and Sydney . The drive to Beechworth (from Melbourne or Sydney) is mostly highways and very easy. Just remember, to drive on the LEFT!

Where to stay in Beechworth

Beechworth is a beautiful town with many gorgeous cottages and some beautiful hotels, it is hard to go wrong with Beechworth accommodation.

However, here are some of my recommendations of places you could consider when booking accommodation:

Spring Creek Cottage is located in central Beechworth and is perfect for a weekend away. The backyard runs onto a small shallow creek and has the homely feel with a wood fire heater. Spring Creek Cottage has everything you need to make this place feel like your home away from home.

1860 Luxury Cabin makes for a great couples get away. As the name suggests, this historic timber cabin was built in the 1860’s, but don’t worry, it has been restored since!

The 1860 Luxury Cabin has all of the modern comforts, a King sized bed and open fire. The Cabin is a 5 minute walk from the center of Beechworth and over looks Spring Creek.

Twelve on Albert is an absolutely stunning four star hotel and an easy 8 minute walk into the center of Beechworth. Twelve on Albert is an adult only hotel with a large shared veranda and fire place.

The Freeman on Ford is features Victorian style rooms with some rooms including a private spa bath and other have private balconies. The Freeman on Ford is located right in the heart of Beechworth.

House Sitting

If you’re travelling on a budget or you’d like to stay in one place for a while there are often House Sits available. In country Victoria house stays are often in unique places such as Hobby farms and do involve looking after some animals!

Stroll along ford street.

beechworth tourist information

I’ll let you in on a secret, this photo is actually taken looking down Camp street but you can see Ford Street crossing Camp Street at the roundabout.

Ford street is lined with 19th century gold rush era buildings, foot paths covered with verandas and is in fact, one of the best preserved towns in Victoria.

Stroll along the street taking in the beauty of this rural Victorian town and check out some of the old cars in the garage at the top of the street.

You will be hard pressed to find a more photogenic town in Victoria, perhaps even Australia.

Visit the Old Beechworth Gaol

Built on Beechworth’s first stockade site between 1859 and 1864. Construction of the goal was constructed between 1857 and 1864.

The Beechworth Gaol was opened in 1860 and held up to 132 prisoners. The Gaol was open and operating up until 2004 – I can still remember walking passed the Gaol yelling out to the prisoners on our Grade 6 school camp.

The Old Beechworth Gaol is famous for one of its most notable prisoners – Ned Kelly. Where he served 6 months in 1870-1871 and again during his committal trial for murder in 1880.

These days, the Beechworth Gaol is open for the public and tours operate daily from 11 am – 1 pm. Tickets for tours cost $14 per adult, $10 for students/concessions and $40 for families. Children under 6 are FREE.

The cafe is open from 10 am – 2 pm and a great place to relax by the fire in the winter or cool down with a drink in the summer.

Join the Kelly Gang at the Ned Kelly Vaults

If you are a Ned Kelly fan or interested in outlaws and bush rangers in general then this is the place for you. Although the newly opened Ned Kelly Vaults are rather small, it is still a very interesting visit and houses much of the Kelly gangs memorabilia.

If you’re a fan of the late Heath Ledger you’ll notice his helmet from 2003 film “Ned Kelly”.

The building which houses the The Ned Kelly Vault was built in 1856 and was originally used during the gold rush to store gold.

Tickets to The Ned Kelly Vault is part of the Burke museum ticket and can be bought at the information center or the Burke museum.

Step into Harry Power’s Cell

Old Heavy door on a sandstone building leading into a dark gaol cell.

Harry Power is another famous Bush Ranger who has made several appearance in the historic Beechworth Court House. He was sent out from England to Australia as convict and lived a good life until he was wrongly accused of stealing a horse.

This accusation led him to shooting two German soldiers. He fled, but was eventually captured and he went on to become one of the most famous Bush Rangers.

The cell you can see today, is the cell that housed Power on many occasions below the Court House.

Stand trial at the Court House

Unlike most courthouses that are open to visitors, you are free to fully explore the courthouse, there are no ropes or “do not enter” signs.

So why not stand in the witness box or sit in the judges seat. View the court house from the jurors box.

It is well worth heading downstairs and sitting in the holding cells while listing to the stories of those prisoners who have been held in these cells.

The court house is open seven days a week from 10 am until 5 pm – the last admission is at 4:30 pm. Tickets be purchased from the Courthouse of the Information center.

Time travel in the Robert O’Hara Burke Memorial Museum

A mock up of a Victorian street. The street is lined with shops and an old pram is parked on the street.

Robert O’Hara Burke was the superintendent in Beechworth before he embarked on the “Burke and Wills” expedition. The museum houses a large range of Australian memorabilia, especially from the 19th century and the gold rush era.

Explore a mock-up of shop fronts and streets from a by-gone era. Walking around the mock-up street and peeking into the shop fronts is like going back in time.

Tickets can be purchased at the museum (these tickets can be used again at the Ned Kelly Vaults) or from the visitor information center.

Stock up on sweets at the lolly shop

One of my favourite things to do in Beechworth is to visit the Beechworth Lolly Shop. From typical Australian Lolly’s to international sweets, there is a wide range of lolly’s and definitely something for everyone.

It is very popular on most people’s “Things to do in Beechworth” list and can get very busy so I suggest going earlier in the morning or late in the afternoon.

Taste Beechworth Honey

Beechworth Honey has been produced in Beechworth for four generations. They continue today to produce Honey from 100% Australian Bees with over 30 species.

The Beechworth Honey shop is open 7 days a week from 9 am until 5:30 pm. The Bee School offers daily and weekend programs. Programs are available on the blackboard in the court yard of the honey shop.

You must book if you would like to access the honey archive. In order to access the honey archive you must make a gold coin donation which goes to support the bees.

For more information about the Beechworth Honey you can check out their website

Taste some local brews at Bridge Road Brewers

beechworth tourist information

The Bridge Road Brewers is a great place for lunch or dinner. It is a very relaxed environment and has a beautiful fire for the winter time. Grab a pizza and try some local brews.

Sitting outside with a few drinks is a great way to spend a summer afternoon with locals and tourists alike.

Catch gold fever at the Beechworth Gold Gift Shop

The Beechworth Gold Gift Shop is not just a shop but its also a tribute to the gold history in Beechworth. From original photos and information on the gold rush.

You can visit the Gold Vaults and see if you can find your family names, or see the gold horse shoes the huge gold nugget and the beautiful gemstone gallery.

Of course, you can shop some of the beautiful jewelry, from gold to gemstone and opal necklaces, earrings, necklaces just to name a few.

Grab a treat at the famous Beechworth Bakery

A visit to the Beechworth Bakery should be at the top of your list of things to do in Beechworth.

The pies and sausages are to die for and they have some of the most amazing cakes. With plenty of seating inside, upstairs out on the veranda or on the street , you will find yourself feeling very welcome to grab a meal.

Again, the Bakery gets very busy so I suggest try to avoid typical meal times and grab and early or late lunch or even pop in to grab some take away an go and enjoy it in the park.

Here in Victoria the Beechworth bakery is well known and for good reason. In fact, the Beechworth Bakery has expanded to to Bendigo and Healsville!

Do(n’t) go chasing waterfalls at Woolshed Falls

A water fall flowing over rocks with an birgh orange colour. Trees line the banks of the waterfalls

We have made it to the end of our list of things to do in Beechworth but have we saved the best for last?

Located 6 minutes from the center of Beechworth you will find the Woolshed falls. The Woolshed falls are located within the Chiltern-Mt. Pilot National park. The falls are located less than 100 m from the car park which makes them easily accessible no matter your fitness levels.

If you walk left from the car park you can reach the upper viewing platform and see the falls in all their glory. If you prefer you can follow the path straight from the car park and scramble over the rocks and get a closer view of the falls.

I recommend grabbing a picnic or a treat from the bakery and having lunch while overlooking the falls.

During the gold rush the falls were a bustling place with up to 8,000 people searching the pools around the falls for gold. The falls were once the center of the richest gold fields in Victoria and nearly 57kg of gold was found in the Woolshed Falls pools between 1918 and 1920.

These days, there are many walks available around the national park and the falls so you could easily spend a day exploring the area.

However, if you are short on time and you drive straight to the car park you can spend half an hour or less and you will still be able to enjoying the falls and the incredible views.

Telegraph Station

The Telegraph station on Ford Street is one of the buildings in the Beechworth Historic and Cultural Precinct that has been well preserved since the Gold Rush Era.

The Telegraph station helped the town communicate with the world via Morse Code. Morse Code was vital in the communication of the news of the Kelly Gang, in particular the siege at Glenrowan.

At the telegraph station you will see some of the work of the surveyors who planned the towns in the area, including Beechworth. You can still see the tools that were used as well as information on how the tools were used.

The Beechworth Telegraph station still remains one the busiest telegraph stations in the word due to the Morse Code Fraternity. Today, you still have the option to send a telegraph any where around the world.

When to visit Beechworth

Beechworth is beautiful any time of year. In the autumn the leaves turn into gorgeous bright colours and contrast beautifully with the buildings and Spring is stunning when the flowers are are starting to bloom.

During the summer it can get very hot and dry in Beechworth, but if you love the heat then this is the perfect time to visit. Winter is generally the quieter season as it does get chilly but there are still plenty of things to do in Beechworth in the winter.

How long to spend in Beechworth

As Beechworth is 3 hours from Melbourne it will be approximately 6 hour round trip, not to mention spending a few hours in Beechworth so I suggest you plan on an overnight stay …. if not escaping for a weekend.

Most of the attractions on the list of things to do in Beechworth are all within walking distance of each other and the falls are just that little bit further out of town, so two days should be plenty of time.

However, if you are in Beechworth longer than two days there are plenty of walks around the area and a few wineries (check out the Indigo Vineyard, on the Melbourne side of Beechworth) and the Information Center is great place to check out!

Beechworth History Trail Information

Nestled amidst rolling hills and granite outcrops in northeastern Victoria, Australia, the captivating historic town of Beechworth beckons visitors to step back in time and immerse themselves in its rich Colonial and Gold Rush era history .

Take a journey into the past along the Beechworth History Trail, a treasure trove of impeccably preserved heritage streetscapes, sites, and storied landmarks.

From the bustling tents of prospectors during the 1850s gold fever to today’s lovingly restored honey-hued stone homesteads and grandiose civic buildings, Beechworth provides an unparalleled window into 19th-century Australian frontier life. This guide uncovers the main historic gems along the trail.

Table of Contents

Early History

The Beechworth area has a documented Aboriginal history stretching back over 40,000 years. The Pallanganmiddang-speaking peoples inhabited the Ovens Valley. In the mid-1800s, prospectors discovered gold in the region, leading to a major gold rush. Hordes of miners flocked to the area seeking their fortune.

Founding of Beechworth

The Beechworth township was officially established in 1853 and soon grew to over 30,000 inhabitants. It emerged as a thriving commercial and administrative centre, becoming known as the “hub of the colony”. Beechworth was designated as a municipality in 1863 and served as a key government centre.

Architecture along the Trail

Many buildings in Beechworth’s historic centre still retain their original 1800s architecture and character. Signature architectural styles include:

Beechworth History Trail & Georgian Architecture

Georgian-style buildings reflect an elegant symmetry with their rectangular facades, multi-pane sash windows, and panelled doors. Red brick or local granite are common materials, giving a sturdy yet refined look.

Example buildings include the stately 1858 Courthouse and the 1876 Burke Museum. The Georgian style was popular for important civic structures.

Beechworth History Trail Post Office

Victorian Italianate

Italianate architecture adds more decorative embellishments like stucco or plaster walls, elaborate cast iron lacework trimmings on verandahs and balconies, classical columns, and detailed mouldings over windows and doors.

Building colours are more varied. The 1886 Town Hall and 1856 Tanswells Commercial Hotel display these ornate Italianate elements.

Edwardian Styles

Later Federation Edwardian buildings in the early 20th century incorporated features like timber fretwork gables, turrets with pointed conical roofs, bay windows with multi-paned leadlight windows, and extensive decorative wood trim.

The Beechworth Post Office (1903) and the Bank of Victoria (1915) demonstrate these Edwardian traits.

Beechworth History Trail & Quirky Mixes

Some Beechworth buildings uniquely blend aspects of different eras and styles. The 1878 Burke Museum combines a Georgian brick facade with Victorian Italianate iron lace balconies and lamp fittings.

The Pepper Tree House mixes Georgian symmetry with an Italianate tower and Edwardian fretwork gables. These eclectic combinations add to the diversity and charm of Beechworth’s streetscapes.

As you explore Beechworth, notice how technological innovations in materials like iron, glass, and cement allowed more elaborate ornamentation to emerge over time alongside traditional local granite and brick. Yet a subtle harmony and human scale remains evident in the historic streetscapes.

Beechworth History Trail Key Historic Buildings

Some of the major historic buildings and sites along the trail include:

Beechworth Historic Courthouse

The magnificent colonnaded Beechworth Courthouse is considered one of Australia’s finest surviving examples of Classical Revival architecture.

Four towering ionic pillars make a striking statement greeting visitors to the 1858 granite building. Upstairs housed the judge’s chambers while courtrooms occupied the ground floor interior, including the aptly named “Black Hole” holding cell.

Telegraph Station

Built from local granite in 1856-57, the Telegraph Station provided early Morse code communication links for the growing town. Telegraph operators manually transmitted and received telegraph messages until 1874, when the building became the town’s first post office.

The heritage building features rusticated granite blocks, iron-railed verandahs, a central louvred attic tower, and now contains historical exhibits.

Beechworth’s elaborate 1886 Town Hall, designed by prominent Melbourne architect George Fordham, exemplifies the Victorian Italianate style. The civic building features a symmetrical facade, stuccoed walls, arched colonnades, decorative cast iron balustrades, a central clocktower, and ornate parapet mouldings.

The exterior tympanum frieze depicts allegorical figures representing Commerce, Agriculture, Mining, and Progress. Inside are fine-pressed metal ceilings.

Burke Museum

Originally built as Beechworth’s Telegraph Station in 1858, this building later served as a post and telegraph office from 1874-1876.

Named the Burke Museum in 1886 in honour of explorer Robert O’Hara Burke, the museum displays historic photographs, artifacts, costumes, and memorabilia associated with the explorer and Beechworth’s colonial era. Of architectural note are the iron-railed verandahs, louvred attic towers, and eaves brackets.

Bank of Victoria

The imposing Bank of Victoria building, erected in 1867 from brick and stucco, is considered the grandest structure in Beechworth.

Designed by architects Terry & Oakden, the Italianate facade features iron lacework balconies, Corinthian columns, arched sash windows with moulded surrounds, decorative parapet, and an elaborate interior with a coffered ceiling and marble. The bank closed in 1909, and the building became the town hall in 1915.

Ovens District Hospital

Beechworth’s former Ovens District Hospital was established in 1857. Surrounded by heritage gardens, the grounds contain many original buildings, including the 1879 granite Ludwiczak Ward for ‘lunatic’ patients and the Nurses Home.

Other structures date from 1886 to the 1930s, representing a range of architectural styles from Italianate to Art Deco. The hospital closed in 1995 and is now vacant.

Daniel Sloan Store Ruins

Ruins remain from the once impressive 1858 Daniel Sloan store designed by Ovens District pioneer architect Augustus Fritsch. After being destroyed by fire in 1905, only the brick and granite facades of the imposing Victorian Italianate warehouse survive. The site retains heritage significance.

Tanswells Commercial Hotel

Originally named the Vine Hotel when built in 1856, Tanswells Commercial Hotel in Beechworth remains one of Beechworth’s most intact examples of a Victorian-era hotel. William Tanswell operated the hotel for nearly 50 years. It retains original iron-laced verandahs, stone walls, a 4-storey tower, period guest rooms and a dining room with a potbelly stove. Careful restorations allow guests to experience 19th-century country hospitality.

Oriental Claims Office

This 1856 site marks where Chinese miners registered gold claims and paid necessary fees during the gold rush era.

While often facing discrimination, Chinese miners made extensive contributions in the Beechworth goldfields. Informational plaques and an ornamental Chinese Burner pay tribute to this important cultural legacy.

Historic Personalities

Beechworth has strong connections to several key colonial figures:

Robert O’Hara Burke

This Irish police superintendent became the first European to cross Australia south to north in 1860 but perished on the return trip.

Australia’s most infamous folk hero bushranger was held in the Beechworth jail before his final showdown. His boyhood home and jail cell can be visited.

Frederick Proesche

Beechworth’s founder and first surveyor laid out the town grid in 1853. Proesche designed many of Beechworth’s schools and churches.

Thomas Beecham

Goldfields Commissioner coordinating the mining camps and diggings surrounding Beechworth in the 1850s.

Philip Skene

A pioneer and “character” who supplied stores to miners. His gravestone epitaph amusingly read, “Here lies Philip Skene – He Lived and Died”.

These key figures all left their mark on the development and evolution of the town. Informational signs and displays educate visitors about their legacies.

Historic Buildings Turned Museums

Many of Beechworth’s historic buildings have been preserved and turned into museums and cultural displays:

Beechworth Lunatic Asylum

A once-grand psychiatric hospital complex (1867-1995) is now open for historical tours showing patient dormitories and treatment areas. Eerie at night!

Beechworth Athenaeum Library and Museum

An 1858 library was given to the community by prominent philanthropist George Ware. It became a museum in 1887, displaying artifacts, art, war items, and mining implements.

Old Beechworth Prison

Built from 1858-1864, this still functioning prison holds cells used to house bushrangers and murderers in its early notorious years. Day and night ghost tours!

Stanley Athenaeum

An 1860 community hall and theatre was converted into a museum displaying gold rush performers and entertainment history.

Old Beechworth Post Office

The 1856 post and telegraph office now contains communications and postal history exhibits. Costumed staff re-enact scenes.

Powder Magazine

An 1853 gunpowder and explosives storehouse transformed into a museum of mining and geology artifacts, plus gold rush artifacts.

Old Police Barracks

1858 police quarters and stables housing exhibits on law enforcement during the gold rush era. Historic police uniforms, weapons, and cells.

These repurposed institutions provide windows into Beechworth’s past public services, civic duties, communications, policing, and incarceration systems. They showcase how gold rush prosperity shaped early development.

Geological Features

Beechworth sits within a region still bearing gold-bearing geological formations and features:

The town is surrounded by underground veins of gold called reefs that gave rise to the surface alluvial gold deposits that attracted thousands of miners in the 1850s gold rush fevers.

Granite Outcrops

Massive granite boulders and tors protrude from the landscape around Beechworth. Granite produced the mineral-rich molten fluids that concentrated gold and minerals within quartz reefs underground.

Mine Shafts

Both open-cut mines and deep vertical shafts dug by miners searching for gold quartz reefs can be seen around Beechworth. Some are hundreds of feet deep.

Sluice Channels

Long sunken channels dug by miners to divert creek waters to sluice away gravel, sand, and soil can still be seen meandering across goldfields seeking gold flecks.

Alluvial Deposits

Remnants of the alluvial gravel, sand, and soil deposits laid down over time by rivers and creeks that contained eroded golden nuggets and dust.

Tailings Mounds

Large grim conical mounds of rocky waste material discarded by miners after extracting gold from quartz still dot areas around town.

Beechworth’s landscape remains scarred by the feverish mining activities driven by hopes of instant riches during the mid-1800s gold rush era.

Cultural Attractions and Museums

In addition to historical sites, Beechworth offers many cultural attractions and museums:

Beechworth Honey Experience

This working honey farm offers informative tours about beekeeping history, honey extraction, mead production, and beeswax candle making. Honey tastings included!

Beechworth Sweet Co.

Housed in an 1867 bakery building, this gourmet confectioner produces handmade chocolates, fudges, licorice, and old-fashioned candies using traditional methods and recipes. Delicious!

Beechworth Brewery

Enjoy craft beers like the popular Beechworth Pale Ale and Golden Ale produced on-site at this modern microbrewery founded in 2005. Cellar door tastings and sales are available.

Burkes Museum Goldfields Wildlife Park

Adjoining Burke Museum, this wildlife park displays Australian native animals like kangaroos, koalas, snakes, and over 75 bird species in a beautiful outdoor bush setting.

Beechworth Streetlife Museum

Quirky private collection of over 10,000 items showcasing 1920-50s advertising, packaging, domestic, and industrial items in a historic setting. Fabulous pop culture time capsule!

Gilchrists Model Motor Museum

Marvel at an impressive collection of intricately detailed scale model vintage cars and motorbikes, with model shops and villages also on display. A collector’s dream.

From goldfield history to honey, wildlife and beer, Beechworth’s museums cover a broad spectrum of cultural heritage. They provide opportunities to sample gourmet local flavours, too.

Historic Gardens

Several beautiful gardens around Beechworth provide a peaceful historic ambiance:

Queen Victoria Gardens

Landscaped in 1897 to honour the late Queen Victoria’s Diamond Jubilee. Features manicured lawns, a floral clock, and an ornamental pond.

Old Beechworth Gaol Gardens

Granite-walled 1863 exercise yards behind the old prison provide a shady oasis with scenic views. Escape the summer heat!

Lake Sambell Reserve

This 1857 reservoir and dam were vital for Beechworth’s early water supply. Now a scenic recreation lake set amidst mature trees and roses.

Old Asylum Gardens

Expansive 150-year-old grounds and arboretum surrounding the Lunatic Asylum ruins with botanical collections. Structures like the carriageway gatehouse remain.

These historic gardens and reserves offer shady spots to contemplate Beechworth’s past within green, serene landscapes. The large old trees, lakes, and fountains provide a picturesque setting.

Historic Walking Paths

Exploring the sites of Beechworth on foot provides interesting vantage points:

Asylum Walking Path

This trail follows along the perimeter of the Old Mayday Hills Lunatic Asylum grounds past the ward ruins, facilities, and nature areas. Interpretive signs describe its history.

Gorge Scenic Walk

This shady trail follows beautiful spring-fed Stanley Creek along the rocky gorge below Beechworth, passing historic mine tunnels and water races. A scenic outlook has panoramic views.

Beechworth Gorge Heritage Walk

This trail explores the Newtown end of the gorge, its 1863 powder magazine, and geological formations carved by water erosion that exposed gold-bearing quartz reefs underground.

Old Cemetery Trail

A walking path through Beechworth’s 1854 Pioneer Cemetery provides insights into colonial tombstones and the area’s past residents. Scenic valley views.

Beechworth’s trails allow history explorers to take in outdoor sights and natural scenery surrounding the town from an up-close vantage.
