Have you ever wished you could roll out of your tent in the morning still snuggled in your sleeping bag?

If so, you’ll be thrilled to know Aldi is bringing back its popular onesie sleeping bags as part of an Easter ‘Special Buys’ camping range.

The sleeping bag – officially the “One-Z wearable sleeping bag” – has arms, legs (with removable feet) and even a hood.

Aldi’s wearable sleeping bags are back.

It officially makes its comeback in stores nationally from Saturday, March 25 and will be available in three sizes – small (suitable for someone 155cm-169cm tall), medium (170cm-183cm) and large (184cm-200cm).

The $49.99 item is advertised as fully insulated, with an elastic waistband, dual zipper access, and side ventilation on the legs.

The Onezee has been popular for years — so much so that when the German retailer announced it was making a comeback in 2017, its post generated a whopping 92,000 comments.

“ALDI Australia: Please tell me these gems will be restocked!” one person begged after learning how fast it sold out.

“ALDI Australia they are the best. When will they be available again? Everyone who sees mine and my husbands wants one too,” said another at the time.

You can also grab a four-person tent for $169.

Meanwhile, Aldi will also be four-person tents up for grabs for $169 and six-person tents for $199.

More Coverage

The travel camp quilts will be $10 cheaper than last year, now priced at $59.99.

Some other interesting outdoor gadgets on offer include a portable hammock with a foldable frame so you don’t need to tie it to a tree ($79.99) and a solar portable charger to wear on a backpack ($59.99).

The 28W mono folding solar panel can charge phones, tablets, powerbanks and some DSLRs.

The Best Camping Quilts For Your Next Adventure in 2022

Mike Richard

Unless you prefer a hammock or sleeping on raw earth Cody Lundin-style, you probably appreciate the comfort of a well-made sleeping bag when sleeping under the stars. Like matches, hiking boots , and a flask of bourbon , a proper sleeping bag is required packing for most avid campers. But  ultralight campers have known for years that traditional bags aren’t the best solution for outdoor snoozing. Instead, in-the-know outdoorsmen often pack a camping quilt.

For Well-Heeled Campers: Enlightened Equipment Revelation

For side sleepers: sierra designs nitro quilt 800, for hammock sleepers: kammok bobcat trail quilt, for eco-conscious outdoorsmen: rumpl nanoloft puffy blanket.

The world “quilt” recalls lovingly crocheted yarn throw blankets that your nana likes to wear to keep the chill away. In the camping world, however, a camp quilt (or “trail quilt”) refers to a versatile, insulated, open-concept sleeping cover that affords the same functionality as a sleeping bag  but is better in almost every respect.

By eliminating the heaviest, most cumbersome parts of a traditional sleeping bag — namely the hood, back, and zippers — camp quilts are lighter, more compact, far more versatile, and just as warm as their cocoon-like counterparts. The best camp quilts weigh around a pound, pack down small, and are rated to 10 degrees Fahrenheit. Pro tip: Although not required, camp quilts are best when paired with a sleeping pad for added comfort and warmth. Below are some of our favorite camp quilts this 2022.

  • Get the best camping axes for cutting, chopping, and prepping your way around the campsite
  • Take your favorite tipple from town to trail with the best camping flasks
  • Costco has a secret online store, Costco Next, that any member can access – here’s how

Ask most hardcore minimalist hikers about their outdoor bed setup, and some mention of Enlightened Equipment is almost guaranteed. The company’s Revelation sets the standard for lightweight, down camp quilts. Versatility is its strongest selling point. Using the integrated zipper and shock cord, it can be closed like a traditional sleeping bag, kept wide open like a blanket, or just about any variation in between to dial in your preferred fit. As most of the brand’s quilts are custom, its products are pricey. Shop the brand’s Warehouse section to save money on lightly used or “scratch & dent” quilts, or opt for a made-to-order model where you choose the temperature rating, dimensions, insulation level and type, color, and fabric.

Sierra Designs’ clever Nitro Quilt 800 boasts two unique features that make it a worthy quilt/sleeping bag hybrid. The first is a hideaway hood that’s perfect for insulating your dome in cold weather, particularly when sleeping in a hammock or on the ground. Hand/arm pockets add additional warmth when necessary. The second thing we love is the oversized V-shaped design. The added width means more room for moving around and tossing and turning, which can prove annoying in a typical sleeping bag. As the name implies, the Nitro Quilt features 800 fill power which promises to keep you cozy to 35 degrees. The 20 Degree version adds 5 ounces to the overall weight — a small price to pay for a four-season sleeping bag alternative.

Compared to others on this list, Kammok’s Bobcat Trail Quilt is the most like a traditional quilt. With a 45-degree temperature rating and 600-fill-power DownTek insulation, it’s designed as a lightweight, three-season outdoor sleep solution. The rectangular (versus tapered) design means it works just like a throw or blanket you might use at home. Indeed, it’s billed as the sort of quilt you might use inside your vacation cabin or outside by the campfire. The Bobcat also offers several features that make it easy to pair with Kammok’s line of camp hammocks . Hidden elastic cords can be cinched down to create a makeshift toe box, or the quilt can be suspended from a hammock to provide extra under-hammock warmth.

Rumpl is still our favorite brand for technical and outdoor adventure blankets. The NanoLoft Puffy Blanket is one of the company’s most significant redesigns since launching in 2014. While billed as a blanket rather than a quilt, the warm, versatile, weather-resistant design works just as well indoors and out. What truly sets it apart is the next-generation green construction. The NanoLoft Puffy is Rumpl’s first-ever synthetic alternative to its previous all-down blankets. This move eliminates the need for virgin plastics and is thus safer and easier on the environment. Each one is made from more than 60 discarded recycled plastic bottles, but the company promises it’s the warmest, most packable synthetic blanket to date. That they’re available in a wide variety of colors and killer prints makes them even better.

One-person tents have historically had a tainted reputation in the outdoor world. For many years, these tents were like crawling into a tube and you would barely have enough space to get changed — and don't even think about drinking a coffee or reading a book. The good news is that one-person tents have come a long way in recent years and you no longer have to haul a two-person tent just to get the space and comfort on a long thru-hike.

When we're picking our one-person tent to add to the top of a packing list, there are three factors to consider: price tag, weight, internal space. In order to get the best one-person tents, we have balanced these three factors against one another so that whichever you prioritize, there is a tent on this list for you.

If you’re cooking in the woods, chances are you fall into one of two camps (pun intended). Either you’re packed with car camping gear (including everything and the kitchen sink) or you're backpacking with lightweight camping cookware. Whichever mode of camping you're into, you need the right gear for the job. Nobody wants to carry a twenty-pound, two-burner propane grill up a mountain or feed a family of four with a single coffee mug.

So, we did the legwork to research and compare the best camping cookware and portable outdoor kitchen supplies for both the car-camping crowd and the minimalist campers out there. This includes a list of pots, utensils, stoves, sporks, and more. Because no camping trip is complete without a legit mini kitchen to make you feel right at home.

Spring is officially here, and for those of us in the Northern Hemisphere anyway, that means the start of five to six months of the year's best weather. It's the perfect time to get outdoors or at least plan your next outdoor adventures, whether that's hiking, kayaking, biking, hitting the beach — whatever you're into. It's also a great time to take stock of your outdoor gear to see what, if anything, might need an upgrade.

If you're into camping, that might mean shopping for a new tent, a portable fire pit, or the best power station you can get your hands on to keep your tech gadgets powered up for car camping. With all that in mind, we’ve selected some of our favorite front-country and backcountry essentials. These are our picks for the best of the best camping gear accessories of 2023 (so far).

No Aldi? No problem. We found an alternative on Amazon. The Pacific Pass 6-Person Dome Tent also sleeps the whole fam, is 74.8″ tall, takes just five minutes to set up, and is water-resistant and comes with a rain fly.

Then there are the sleeping bags. For summer camping, you want a bag that will keep you warm on chilly nights, but that won’t make you sweat yourself awake on balmier nights. This Adventuridge Hooded Sleeping Bag will do the trick. It’s comfort rated to 47 degrees, so even those chilly summer nights will be covered, and it comes with a sealable compression storage sack. Did we mention it’s just under $20?

Online, we found a similar sleeping bag with hood from Farland . It’s rated to 20 degrees, also comes with a compression storage sack, and is offered in a wide variety of colors. Oh, and it has great reviews, too.

The Best Backpacking Quilts of 2024, Tested and Reviewed

Swap out your sleeping bag for a backpacking quilt to save weight in your pack

We may earn revenue from the products available on this page and participate in affiliate programs. Learn more ›

Before testing backpacking quilts, I didn’t understand what the hype was about. Anytime someone mentioned one, I always thought, “Can’t I just use a sleeping bag ? What’s the difference?” Turns out there is a difference, and if you give quilts a shot, you may be converted.

Here’s what sets them apart: Backpacking quilts don’t have back fabric and don’t wrap around your body like a sleeping bag. However, well-designed quilts still have excellent insulating and heat retention properties because they attach to a sleeping pad to hold them in place. Many lightweight and ultralight backpackers prefer quilts because, without a zipper and with less fabric, the sleep system is much lighter. Plus, for people like me who toss and turn or who sleep on their side or stomach, a quilt gives you more mobility and, in turn, a better night’s sleep. Below are the best backpacking quilts I tested for almost any condition.

  • Best Overall: Outdoor Vitals StormLoft Down TopQuilt
  • Best Ultralight: Big Agnes Fussel UL Quilt

Best Water-Resistant: Therm-a-Rest Vesper Down Quilt

  • Best Quilt Bag: Feathered Friends Flicker UL Quilt Sleeping Bag
  • Best Budget: OneTigris Featherlite Ultralight Sleeping Quilt

How We Picked the Best Backpacking Quilts

Camping photo

Choosing the best backpacking quilts was a new challenge for me. I have traditionally gravitated towards sleeping bags, especially since I do a lot of backpacking in the shoulder seasons or during cold weather. When beginning my research for this article, I didn’t know much about quilts or why they existed, so it was fun to learn more about the concept behind their design and see how genuinely functional they can be.

It took a fair amount of time to gather recommendations from backpackers who regularly use these products to determine which quilts to include in this article and which to test. As many of the hikers I interviewed are ultralight enthusiasts, they were able to point me in the right direction. From there, I collected the products and hit the trail. Being new to the quilt concept, I was particular about the heat retention and functionality as a part of my sleep system.

Beyond that, much of the testing looked similar to sleeping bags. I analyzed the weight and packability, the materials and sourcing, and I did my best to gauge durability. Like sleeping bags, no one quilt is the perfect fit for everyone. Each one has its best application, and like with most gear, it all comes down to personal preference and intended purpose.

Best Backpacking Quilts: Reviews and Recommendations

Camping photo

  • Weight: 23 oz (15F Regular)
  • Fabric: 10D Ripstop Nylon w/ VitalDry DWR
  • Fill: 800-Fill Power HyperDry Water Repellent Down
  • Temperature Rating: 0 to 30F / -17 to -1C
  • Lightweight and highly packable
  • Available in a range of temperature ratings
  • Excellent water resistance for down
  • Clips and pad straps included
  • Outdoor Vitals lifetime warranty
  • Draft collar cinch is in a weird spot
  • Can improve material sourcing and sustainability

The Outdoor Vitals StormLoft Down TopQuilt is one of the best three-season backpacking quilts in terms of value and performance. It is reasonably priced, especially when compared to similarly rated blankets and bags. I tested the StormLoft 15F for this article, but Outdoor Vitals also offers this design in a 0F and 30F temperature rating. If you get cold easily, even when camping in the summer, the 15F bag is an excellent option.

Outdoor Vital’s slogan is “live ultralight,” and this quilt lives up to that standard. The bag itself has a highly durable design yet is still very lightweight. Utilizing 800+ down fill and 10D fabric shell/lining, this bag is warm enough for most three-season ventures and should last several seasons. I like that the brand provides clear care instructions for cleaning online to help you maintain the blanket. The regular length of the quilt is suitable for most average adults, but each temperature rating comes in an extended version if that is a better fit.

Camping photo

The foot box of the quilt mimics that of a mummy bag, and the draft collar can help retain more body heat. If you’re camping in colder weather and worried about losing heat through your head, we suggest looking into the insulated balaclava that acts as a mummy hood would. It’s likely not necessary during the summer but it may enhance your sleep experience during cooler weather. While most features are suitable for a comfortable night’s rest, the cinch on the draft collar is in the middle of the quilt, which means it falls right onto your face when it is cinched down. If you’re a light sleeper, this may disturb you while you rest. There are clips and pad straps included, but the pad straps could be more durable and secure.

Note that quilts can be expensive, which is why many people don’t gravitate toward them—and even at a lower price point, this quilt may be out of some backpackers’ budgets. Other than that, there’s a lot to like about this quilt. It is an excellent value for the price, and the features suit backpackers and ultralight packers alike.

Camping photo

  • Weight: 17.3 oz
  • Fabric: Polyester ripstop shell w/ water-repellent finish
  • Fill: 850 DownTek (PFAS-free)
  • Temperature Rating: 40F / 4C
  • Ultralightweight, minimalist design
  • Highly packable
  • Excellent material quality
  • Good value for the price
  • Only suitable for warm, casual camping
  • Sizing isn’t very inclusive

If ultralight is your goal, the Big Agnes Fussel UL Quilt should be a top consideration. This quilt packs and feels similar to ultralight camping blankets . The lightweight snapping system and minimal insulation provide a cozy night’s sleep but only under the right conditions. This quilt is great for casual camping or mid-summer ultralight trips. Weighing just around 1 pound, it’s an easy way to cut some pack weight on long hikes.

This quilt is so light because it is only rated for use at 40F, and it is insulated with 9 ounces of 850 down fill. This design can be functional but only for a short window of time or if you live in a sub-tropical climate. This limits its overall versatility, but you could use it as as more packable alternative to a sleeping bag liner for warmer summer camping trips. The snaps allow you to attach it to your sleeping pad or add some additional ventilation. Honestly, if it is that warm out, this works best opened as a blanket. Then, when temperatures are creeping down to the comfort rating, you can attach it to a higher r-value sleeping pad for just enough warmth overnight.

Camping photo

Another option for this quilt is to use it to layer and add extra insulation to existing sleep systems. That way, you have a quality summer bag to bolster your shoulder and winter-season equipment. The only design flaw I found with this bag is that because the snaps are so lightweight, they don’t secure very firmly. When I was shifting and moving around in the night, the snaps either opened up the bag or came unclipped from the pad attachment, which can compromise comfort while sleeping.

Camping photo

  • Weight: 15 oz (Regular)
  • Fabric: 10D Nylon Ripstop w/ DWR
  • Fill: 900 Fill Goose Nikwax Hydrophobic Down, RDS
  • Temperature Rating: 32 F / 0 C
  • PFAS-free water-resistant down
  • Down sourced with the Responsible Down Standard
  • Lightweight and packable design
  • Durable materials
  • Comfortable shape and feel
  • Sleeping pad attachment can be improved

Down is an excellent insulator, but only if it is kept dry. When backpacking in remote areas, it’s tough to stay completely dry, and when things happen, you want your camping gear —especially essential gear like a sleeping bag or quilt—to work. Waterproofing down and other sleep materials can be difficult, but Therm-a-Rest pulled it off with their Nikwax Hydrophobic Down (RDS). The big benefit of Nikwax is that it’s PFAS-free, making it a highly functional waterproofing agent without harmful chemicals.

Beyond the practical performance in water resistance, the Therm-a-Rest Vesper Down Quilt is lightweight and comfortable. The design is standard for a quilt with a tapered end similar to a mummy bag and snaps to attach to your sleeping pad. Much like our ultralight pick, this quilt is only suitable for warm summer weather and is rated for 32F. Plan accordingly if it might be colder, mainly because the snaps and pad straps come loose fairly easily and could be updated for a more secure fit.

Most Versatile: Feathered Friends Flicker UL Quilt Sleeping Bag

Camping photo

  • Weight: 1 lb 9.2 oz (20F Regular)
  • Fabric: Pertex Endurance UL, Flite 15 denier ripstop nylon
  • Fill: 950+ Goose Down
  • Temperature Rating: 20 – 40F / -6.67 – 4.4C
  • Made in the USA
  • Available in three temperature ratings
  • Highly versatile design
  • Water-resistant shell fabric
  • Durable material construction
  • Not a fan of the neck draw cord for the closure and durability

The Feathered Friends Flicker UL Quilt Sleeping Bag can function as both a backpacking quilt and an ultralight sleeping bag. The option to use it as a full mummy bag or a quilt/blanket makes this one of the most functional and versatile sleep systems available. Made in the USA in Seattle, the down backpacking quilt is available in three temperature ratings. While the 40F bag is ideal for warm summer camping trips, I recommend the 20F quilt if you’re looking for something you can use across all seasons.

The benefit of a zipper gives this quilt an edge over the others because you can zip it up on colder nights to make it draft-free. Other quilts may cut a few ounces by avoiding this, but depending on when and where you’re backpacking, it may be well worth the additional weight. The zipper and drawcord on the neck collar and foot box provide extra ventilation and customization for sleeping conditions. You can cinch the neck collar up like a mummy bag hood or unzip it to wear as a quilt. Since it unzips fully, it also works well as a blanket.

The attention to design that went into this quilted bag blows me away with its versatility and functionality. The shell material is Pertex Endurance UL which is naturally water-resistant and won’t wear off over time, unlike coatings like DWR. There’s a lot to like with this quilt, and honestly, it was hard for me to find a con to list in this review. The only downside I can think of is that over time, the drawstrings loosen.

Camping photo

  • Weight: 2 lbs
  • Fabric: 20D Ripstop Nylon, 380T Polyester Pongee Lining
  • Fill: SEE Polyester
  • Temperature Rating: 41F / 5C
  • Affordable price
  • Good for summer camping
  • Packs down small for a synthetic insulation
  • Hook and loop closure stays in place well
  • The loft of insulation can be lost in the compression bag during shipping
  • Only suitable for warm weather camping
  • Heavy for a backpacking quilt

If you want to try out a quilt but want to avoid paying a premium price, the OneTigris Featherlite Ultralight Sleeping Quilt is a decent place to start. It packs down small but because it utilizes synthetic insulation, it’s bulkier and heavier than down. However, the advantage of synthetic insulation is that it is easier to restore the loft if lost, and it continues to insulate when wet.

In the end, it is a functional quilt. Since it’s only rated for around 41F, we only recommend using it during warm summer nights. This cuts down on the functionality of the quilt for the entire backpacking season in most areas, but at this price point, it may be worth it, depending on your intended frequency of use. In the long run, you may be better off finding a better brand from a used retailer or local consignment store, but this one will do in a pinch.

What to Consider When Choosing a Backpacking Quilt

Backpacking Quilt vs. Sleeping Bag: What’s Right for You

From the outside looking in, it can be hard to tell why a quilt may be more beneficial than a sleeping bag in some situations, but for many thru-hikers and ultralight backpackers, a quilt is well worth the price. When deciding if a backpacking quilt is a good choice for your outdoor needs, it helps to know why quilts are designed the way they are.

Looking at a mummy sleeping bag, a quilt removes a few things to reduce weight and improve packability, namely the back of the sleeping bag. When laying on a sleeping bag, you compress the insulation. This compression nullifies any insulating properties, so a quilt won’t have a panel. Most quilts also remove the hood that is classically seen on mummy sleeping bags, but some have features or accessories that replicate a hood.

Since there is no back panel of fabric and insulation on a quilt, it can be draftier than a sleeping bag. That’s why a proper attachment system involving clips and pad straps is necessary to secure the quilt to your sleeping pad . While sleeping pads add some comfort while you sleep, its primary purpose is to insulate your body heat from the cold ground, so pairing your backpacking quilt with a properly rated sleeping pad is essential.

Most quilts are designed for warmer weather conditions and won’t be suitable for winter camping or even some high-altitude or shoulder season adventures. While many campers like the roominess quilts provide, they can be draftier than a sleeping bag depending on the pad attachment system and how much you move around at night. The potential drafting can deter backpackers because the temperature ratings on quilts are not necessarily as consistent as they would be for a sleeping bag.

While some quilts—like the Feathered Friends quilt —have a partial or full zipper, it’s less common. Removing features like a zipper and a hood is part of how quilt designs cut weight.

When choosing between a backpacking quilt and a sleeping bag, it is important to identify your intended use, the climate, and your sleeping style. If you’re an ultralight backpacker who mostly camps during the warm summer months, a quilt can be the perfect addition to your sleep system. If you’re like me and often backpack in cold weather, a mummy sleeping bag is the better choice.

Temperature Rating

The temperature ratings for backpacking quilts are not the most consistent or reliable. While companies can use international testing standards like EN or ISO ratings, many brands do in-house testing and provide temperature ratings. Quilts often won’t qualify for international or standardized tests because of their open-back designs and potential for drafts.

Since the EN or ISO ratings for temperature are not always the most accurate, it is often better to look at a comfort rating or even the down-fill power and weight of the insulation to get an idea of how warm the quilt is. Other features that can increase the comfort rating include the option for a hood, a draft collar, a close foot box, and secure pad attachments.

The down fill power—which dictates how much space is filled per cubic inch by the down insulation—is essential when overviewing backpacking quilt specifications. For sleeping bags and quilts, fill power varies from 500-900, but many quilts sit on the higher end of the scale (850-950). It’s important to note that a higher fill power doesn’t always mean a warmer quilt. In junction with the fill power, look at the insulation weight to better understand the potential warmth. Fill weight isn’t as widely discussed but may be a better indicator than the fill power. Additionally, I recommend looking for duck and goose down sourced using the Responsible Down Standard.

Camping photo

It’s better to rely more on the comfort rating when comparing temperature and comfort ratings. Temperature ratings are generally listed as lower than the comfort rating because, as the name suggests, a comfort rating tells you the lowest temperature at the quilt keeps you comfortable. A temperature rating, on the other hand, is the lowest temperature at the bag keeps you safe. Comfort ratings are more common on women’s specific bags since the way women regulate body temperature is different than men’s.

In practice, I like to plan a sleep system colder than what you need, according to the forecast. This may be less of a concern in the summer, but if I am backpacking in a shoulder season and the nighttime low temperature is 30F, I bring either a 20F bag or lower. If that is not possible and I have a 30F bag, I pack a sleeping bag liner to improve the temperature rating.

Having a sleeping pad appropriate for the weather conditions can also increase your comfort as you sleep.

Materials and Water Resistance

Durability is a significant question with ultralight backpacking gear, and quilts are more than likely less durable than the average sleeping bag. To gauge the potential durability of the bag, consider the materials used for the shell fabric and the fabric denier. Product specifications list the product materials and may have a number with a D next to it. The D stands for denier, the thread thickness used to make the fabric. The higher the denier number, the more durable the fabric is.

Even fabrics with a relatively high denier are prone to rips and tears, so proper care is recommended while using quilts on the trail. Be aware of sticks and rocks when setting up camp, and store the quilt out of the compression bag to preserve the insulation loft.

Quilt liner and shell material are typically made from some synthetic material or blend. Materials like ripstop nylon are common, but some brands may use proprietary fabric blends to create a more water-resistant and durable material.

To save weight, most backpacking quilts strictly utilize down insulation. Although down is much lighter and can pack down smaller than synthetic insulation, it doesn’t continue to insulate when wet. This may not be as much of an issue in warm conditions, but it can mean sacrificing some comfort on the trail. To combat these issues, many companies now integrate some form of water resistance into their down insulation. Big Agnes utilizes DownTek waterproofing, while Therm-a-Rest opts for a PFAS-free solution from Nikwax .

Weight and Portability

The intention behind the backpacking quilt design is to be highly packable and lightweight, so I recommend picking one that weighs 2 lbs or less. Many of the quilts listed here are best suited for warm weather conditions, which helps them stay lightweight.

Camping photo

If your sleeping bag’s weight and packed size are the primary considerations, a backpacking quilt is recommended. Many average campers gravitate towards bags instead because they tend to have a higher level of comfort and durability. All ultralight gear has some trade-offs, and with quilts, the most significant sacrifice you’re likely to make is regarding the temperature rating and the high likelihood of a draft.

Q: What is the advantage of using a backpacking quilt instead of a sleeping bag?

The primary benefit of a backpacking quilt is that they are lighter than a traditional sleeping bag. On average, a quilt is around 25% lighter than a sleeping bag because much of the fabric that’s usually under the sleeper is eliminated. Most backpacking quilts attach to the sleeping pad to stop any significant heat loss, and since compressed down and synthetic insulation doesn’t insulate properly, their performance is comparable to sleeping bags.

Q: Can you use a backpacking quilt for winter camping?

A backpacking quilt with an appropriate temperature and comfort rating for the conditions can be used for winter camping. Since most quilts don’t utilize zippers, they’re easier to get in and out of than zippered sleeping bags. If heat loss due to the lack of a zipper is a concern, layering insulating clothing to cover drafts or adding another quilt is always an option.

Q: What is the best material for a backpacking quilt?

The best material for a backpacking quilt combines a durable synthetic shell and lightweight, high-fill power-down insulation. Most of the highest-performing backpacking quilts utilize duck or goose down, certified through the Responsible Down Standard. Some quilts may also utilize a hydrophobic down to increase moisture resistance and drying times if materials get wet.

Q: Are backpacking quilts good for side sleepers?

Backpacking quilts are great for side sleepers, stomach sleepers, and anyone who tosses and turns a lot in their sleep. While you may get a similar effect with an unzipped sleeping bag, the big difference is that most quilts can attach to the sleeping pad. That way, you don’t catch a draft from the bag moving too much while you sleep.

Best Backpacking Quilts: Final Thoughts

  • Best Water Resistance: Therm-a-Rest Vesper Down Quilt
  • Best Quilt Bag Design: Feathered Friends Flicker UL Quilt Sleeping Bag

The best backpacking quilts are lightweight, comfortable, and highly packable. It is safe to say that backpacking quilts are not for everyone, especially at their average price point. However, they can be an invaluable piece of camping equipment for ultralight backpackers or anyone that moves a lot in their sleep. Get to know how and when you may use a backpacking quilt before investing in one. Once you’ve tried a well-designed quilt, you may have a hard time going back to always using a sleeping bag.

A backpacker wrapped up in the Enlightened Equipment Revelation sleeping quilt while sitting on a rocky slab overlooking bare granite mountains across the valley

We use backpacking quilts for most of our 3-season adventures because they’re typically lighter and more versatile than traditional sleeping bags . Quilts are also roomier for side sleepers and tosser-turners, so many hikers find them more comfortable than a mummy bag.

Our team of outdoor experts has spent over 1,000 nights in the backcountry testing more than 30 of the lightest, warmest, and most packable backpacking quilts on the market. In this guide, we’ll share what we’ve learned over the past decade of field-testing to help you find the best backpacking quilt for your needs.

Your quilt is just one part of the equation for a warm, comfy night’s sleep in the backcountry. You’ll also need the right sleeping pad to pair it with, and – though it adds a little extra weight – a good pillow is also well worth the investment.

Enlightened Equipment Revelation Quilt 20

Best backpacking quilt overall

Price: $345

Weight: 1 lb. 6.5 oz.

Fill Power: 850 or 950

  • Well-priced for the quality
  • Opens fully like a blanket Includes pad connectors
  • Responsible Down Standard (RDS) certified
  • Many won’t find it warm enough for sub-freezing trips
  • Custom orders have a long lead time (order a stock quilt if you’re in a hurry)

The Enlightened Equipment Revelation has been one of our go-to backpacking quilts for years due to its versatile design, excellent warmth-to-weight ratio, and great price for the quality.

The Revelation can be left open like a blanket on warm nights or cinched up tight when the temperature drops, so it’s a good pick for hikers looking for something they can use for all but the coldest of trips. We’ve found that the 20°F model keeps us warm to right around freezing or just a little below, but cold sleepers may prefer the 10°F model for the extra warmth.

CleverHiker Founder, Dave Collins, swears by the Revelation and has taken it on many of his most epic backpacking trips. From the chilly peaks of Glacier National Park to the much warmer twists of Marble Canyon in Death Valley National Park , the Revelation’s flexible build readily adapts to the conditions.

You can choose to custom order a Revelation to your desired color, size, and temperature rating. We recommend bumping up a size in length and width for full coverage on chilly nights if you sleep cold, or you could consider the EE Enigma quilt. The Enigma has a footbox that’s sewn closed (like a sleeping bag footbox), so it retains a lot more warmth than the Revelation. CH Managing Editor, Ben Applebaum-Bauch, prefers the Enigma, and he’s trusted it for many big backpacking trips – including his CDT thru-hike.

Quality like this will usually set you back a pretty penny, but the Revelation comes in at an amazing price when compared to similar quilts. We’ve been using ours for years, and it’s still one of the best investments we’ve made in our backpacking setup.

  • Loco Libre Ghost Pepper 20

Warmest ultralight backpacking quilt

Price: $405

Weight: 1 lb. 5.5 oz.

Fill Power: 950

  • Highly customizable
  • Highly packable
  • Chevron baffles keep down from moving
  • RDS certified
  • Custom ordering process can be confusing & can take a while to ship

Cold sleepers and winter wanderers, this one’s for you. We usually don’t recommend backpacking quilts for sub-freezing temperatures, but the Loco Libre Ghost Pepper 20 is up for the challenge. This is our top quilt choice for hikers who sleep cold and ultralight adventures at or below freezing.

One thing that makes this quilt warmer than others is the unique chevron baffles – they’re very effective at preventing the down inside from shifting away from areas where you need that heat-trapping power the most. Choose the insulated “Hot Box” footbox option – a footbox that’s sewn closed to trap heat – if you’re gearing up for frigid conditions to boost the warmth even more. And for those who go out in extreme cold, the Ghost Pepper is one of the only quilts on the market that’s available in sub-zero temperature ratings.

The Ghost Pepper is CleverHiker Senior Gear Analyst Casey Handley’s favorite quilt for thru-hiking in the shoulder seasons since it’s warm enough for unexpected cold snaps. She used this quilt for her fall thru-hike of the Long Trail , and was very grateful to have the extra warmth when the icy wind picked up in the northern part of the trail.

There are plenty of custom options available to dial in the best warmth-to-weight for your needs, as well as a ton of color and accessory options. The plethora of customizations on the Ghost Pepper can be a little intimidating for first- time quilt users, but we assure you it’s worth the effort to get exactly what you want out of this toasty warm quilt. Loco Libre’s Operator Series Ghost Pepper is a slightly pared down model with fewer options for hikers looking to keep it simple. Just keep in mind that the Operator Series doesn’t have a sewn footbox option, so it won’t be as warm as the standard model.

Backpackers looking for the absolute warmest quilt will love the toasty Ghost Pepper. This quilt turns up the heat while keeping weight and bulk to a minimum, so it’s a great ultralight alternative to cold-weather sleeping bags.

  • UGQ Bandit 20

Best budget backpacking quilt

Price: $315

Weight: 1 lb. 6.3 oz.

  • Less expensive
  • Not as packable as some
  • Not warm enough for sub-freezing trips

With a weight that’s competitive with the higher-end quilts on our list but a much smaller price tag, the UGQ Bandit 20 is an incredible value.

UGQ allows for a ton of customization on their quilts, and they have one of the widest arrays of color options we’ve ever seen. All of the customization options can be a bit overwhelming if this is your first quilt, but the Features tab of the ordering page has a ton of useful info to help you make your choices. If you have a little extra cash to spend on your quilt, one upgrade we recommend is the neckline draft collar for extra warmth.

Senior Gear Analyst, Casey Handley, tested the Bandit during her thru-hike of the John Muir Trail . This warm and fluffy quilt provided a comfortable night’s sleep after each long day on trail, and the weight was barely noticeable in her pack when it was time to get moving again.

The baffle design of the Bandit prevents down from shifting away from your core and makes this quilt feel fluffier than many others. And while this isn’t the smallest quilt when packed away, the bulk isn’t too bad. Hikers who are tight on space in their packs may want to splurge on the more expensive 950-fill-power down. This option still comes in under $400 and will save you a considerable amount of weight and bulk.

Backpackers who want the luxury of a custom quilt without having to break the bank will absolutely love the Bandit. This quilt keeps pack weight low for ambitious adventures, and the extra loft will help you rest your best on trail.

Stock photo of the REI Magma 30 Quilt with a white background

  • REI Magma Trail Quilt 30

Best ultralight backpacking quilt for warm weather

Price: $329

Weight: 1 lb. 4.3 oz.

Fill Power: 850

  • No upcharge for larger size
  • Opens fully like a blanket
  • Includes pad connectors
  • Not as warm as others
  • Less durable

The REI Magma Trail 30 is our top choice for trips where nighttime temperatures stay in the 40s or above. The pared down design of this quilt keeps your summer base weight in check, and it compresses down small to leave room in your pack for other luxuries.

The latest iteration of the Magma Trail Quilt features a footbox with a zipper and cinch cord that allows you to tailor the warmth to the conditions – a big improvement over the previous iteration that came with a sewn footbox. Since this is a summer quilt, we find it more valuable to be able to vent heat with an openable footbox rather than trapping it in with a fully enclosed one.

CleverHiker Founder, Dave Collins, loves packing the Magma Quilt for strenuous warm-weather trips when keeping weight to a minimum is most important. He packed the Magma for a challenging trek in Wyoming’s Wind River Range and was very pleased with the warmth-to-weight ratio.

Dave is a taller guy, and he really appreciates the roomier cut of the Magma. The standard width of this quilt is 58.5 inches – most others fall somewhere between 50-55 inches – so it’s a good choice for hikers who want more room to wiggle. And if you want even more space, you still have the option to get an even roomier wide model in regular or long length. And best of all, opting for a larger Magma doesn’t cost more money.

Since the Magma isn’t custom, purchasing one is straightforward and there’s no long lead time, so you can get it right away if you’re heading out for a trip soon. This is our top recommendation if you’re after a high-quality and convenient option for warm summer adventures.

  • Hammock Gear Burrow 20

More affordable than similarly warm backpacking quilts

Price: $320

Weight: 1 lb. 9.1 oz.

  • Warmer than many others
  • Customizable
  • Ordering process is simple & straightforward
  • Custom orders can take a while to ship
  • A little heavier / bulkier than some

If you’re looking to maximize warmth without breaking the bank, the Hammock Gear Burrow 20 is a more basic option with an accessible price tag. This quilt is one of the warmest and most durable on our list, making the low cost all the more enticing.

The Burrow offers a simplified list of custom options, which can make things easier if you’re in the market for your first backpacking quilt. You still get to choose the really important stuff – like length, width, and footbox style – but next-level details, such as stitching color, are omitted. Hikers wanting to get the warmest build should choose a sewn footbox, and you may also want to get an ounce or two of down overfill to maintain loft in key areas where you want to lock in the heat.

When Senior Gear Analyst, Casey Handley, was customizing a Burrow to test on the northern 500 miles of the Arizona Trail, she went with the 20-denier nylon taffeta fabric for the outer and inner faces. This material is thicker and more durable than the low-denier ripstop used on most other quilts, so it held up well when cowboy camping on the rocky ground of the Sonoran Desert. While this option leads to a slightly higher weight and bulk, it’s also more affordable and still packs small for how warm it is.

For those who’d rather spend a little more to save some weight, the Burrow UL is a nice choice. It has the same user-friendly custom ordering process, but it’s a full six ounces lighter and considerably more packable.

While the Loco Libre Ghost Pepper above is our top choice for cold weather hikes, the Hammock Gear Burrow is a close second and is a great choice for those working with a tighter budget.

Stock image of Zpacks Classic 20

  • Zpacks Classic 20

Lightest backpacking quilt

Price: $459

Weight: 1 lb. 2.8 oz.

Fill Power: 900

  • Excellent warmth-to-weight ratio
  • Comes with DCF stuff sack
  • Not as durable

If keeping weight low is your top priority, the Zpacks Classic Sleeping Bag should be at the top of your list. This quilt/sleeping bag hybrid provides ultralight warmth using high-quality and responsibly-sourced materials.

The Classic is a little different from other quilts, as it’s more like a hoodless sleeping bag. The three-quarter length zipper and fully enclosed footbox maximize warmth, while the omission of the hood cuts down on weight. We love this design because most hikers backpack with a hooded down jacket or fleece jacket that can be used to keep your head warm at night.

Ultralight gear often requires a little extra care to keep it performing its best for multiple seasons of adventure, and the Classic is no exception. The thin fabric and less robust hardware can wear out quicker if you’re not careful, but we’ve kept our Classic in adventure-ready shape for years by always clearing our campsites of pokey debris before setting up as well as storing the quilt in a large storage bag at home to preserve the loft.

The CleverHiker team has spent more than 100 nights in our Classic Sleeping Bag – including Senior Gear Analyst Casey Handley’s thru-hike of the Colorado Trail – and it still insulates just as well as the first time we took it out. We’ve spent several nights right around freezing in this quilt, and we’d say warm sleepers will find it passable in these conditions. But cold-sleepers who frequently encounter temperatures in the low 30s will want to bump up to the 10°F model or choose a warmer quilt from our list (like the Loco Libre Ghost Pepper or Hammock Gear Burrow 20 ).

The Classic is one of the more expensive quilts on this list, but there’s no better choice if saving weight is a top priority. For this reason, it’s a common pick for thru-hikers and ultralight backpackers covering big distances.

  • Hyperlite Mountain Gear 20

Best warmth-to-weight ratio

Price: $499

Weight: 1 lb. 4.1 oz.

Fill Power: 1000

  • No upcharge for larger sizes
  • Very high-quality down

The Hyperlite Mountain Gear 20 is made with the absolute highest quality materials – namely 1,000-fill power down – and it makes a noticeable difference in the warmth, weight, and packability of this quilt.

We spent 40 nights testing this quilt – including a 300-mile hike on the Arizona Trail – and we find it warmer than many others in its weight class with the same temperature rating. To put it in more data-driven terms, the HMG 20 has 14 ounces of 1,000-fill-power down. The Zpacks Classic and Therm-a-Rest Vesper 20 have 13.7 and 12.5 ounces of 900-fill-power down respectively, and the EE Revelation has 15 ounces of 850-fill-power down. Since the HMG quilt has a larger amount of higher quality down than the Classic and Vesper, it will be noticeably warmer. Seeing as the HMG is filled with better quality down than the Revelation but the fill weight is a bit lower, these two quilts are similarly warm.

Of course the higher quality comes with a higher price tag. The Unbound 20 is one of the most expensive quilts on our list, and whether it’s worth the added cost or not will depend on how much you value saving a few ounces without sacrificing warmth. One big thing the HMG 20 has going for it as far as cost is the fact that you won’t have to pay more to get the long size, and this quilt has a wider cut than many others.

We think thru-hikers and those wanting a quilt for use in chilly shoulder seasons would benefit from the boosted specs of the Unbound, but fair-weather hikers would probably be just fine with a slightly heavier and less warm quilt that costs less.

  • Feathered Friends Flicker 30 UL

Versatile & warm quilt / sleeping bag hybrid

Weight: 1 lb. 6 oz.

Fill Power: 950+

  • Lightweight
  • Warmer than others with the same temp rating
  • Bulkier than other UL quilts
  • Cinch straps at the neck can be bothersome
  • Some won’t find it warm enough for sub-freezing temps

The Flicker 30 UL Quilt from Feathered Friends is well-constructed, comfortable, and versatile. It can be unzipped to function as a cozy blanket on warm summer nights, or you can cinch the footbox and fully zip the quilt to create a draft-free enclosed system on chilly nights.

The Flicker comes with a high price tag, but you’re getting a high-quality quilt that doesn’t skimp on the details. This quilt is stuffed with 950+-fill-power down, a smooth zipper, and some of the nicest outer shell fabric available. That said, you can save a good chunk of change by choosing the slightly heavier Flicker 30 YF model. The YF uses a thicker shell material and downgrades slightly to 900+-fill-power down, but it’s still a great choice with a premium build.

It’s common for quilt temperature ratings to be overly optimistic by 5-10°F, but the Flicker’s temperature rating is pretty accurate in our experience. That’s why the 30°F option is a go-to for CleverHiker Gear Analyst, Annie Hopfensperger, on her 3-season backpacking trips. She’s spent many nights testing this quilt in the mountains – including her hike on the Tonquin Valley Trail in Jasper National Park – where temperatures can drop quickly at elevation and has always stayed toasty warm.

While the Flicker UL 30 weighs about as much as some of the ultralight 20°F models on our list, the small weight penalty gives you a pretty good boost in durability. The added weight comes – mostly – from the Pertex Endurance shell. This outer fabric is 10-denier (denier is a unit of measurement that describes the thickness of a fabric) while many UL quilts use a 7-denier nylon shell fabric. Pertex Endurance fibers are individually wrapped with water-repellant silicone rather than relying on a Durable Water Repellent (DWR) treatment that will wear out quicker with washes.

Hikers who aren’t expecting to backpack in below-freezing conditions very often will love the high-quality build, adaptable design, and durable construction of the Flicker 30 UL.

  • Katabatic Flex 22

Excellent quality backpacking quilt with premium details

Price: $369

Weight: 1 lb. 7.9 oz.

Fill Power: 850 or 900

  • Good pad attachment system (included)
  • Stash pocket
  • A bit heavy
  • Some won’t find it warm enough for sub-freezing trips

We love the versatility, warmth, and comfort of the Katabatic Flex 22 , and we’re impressed with its performance on the trail. It comes in several temperature rating options that are all organized in a more simple ordering process than many of the other quilts on this list.

For trips that won’t dip much below freezing, the 22 is our top pick for warm sleepers and the 15 is our top pick for cold sleepers. CleverHiker Senior Gear Analyst, Casey Handley (warm sleeper), tested the Flex 22 on a late-season trek through the Strawberry Mountain Wilderness where nighttime temperatures were in the low 30s, and she stayed warm and cozy through the night. Cold sleepers should also consider the Katabatic Alsek 22 which is just a warmer, closed footbox version of the Flex.

The Flex is pretty similar in design to the EE Revelation , but it costs a bit more. That said, we think the quality of the craftsmanship on the Flex is a little better and Katabatic adds some value by including a very effective pad attachment system, a storage bag, and a stuff sack. Another feature that sets the Flex apart from the competition is the highly water-resistant down fill. The ExpeDRY treated down helps the Flex maintain loft in damp conditions and also allows the feathers to dry quicker, so this quilt is a good pick for backpackers who live in wet climates.

Having said all that, the Flex still ranks a bit lower than similar options, like the Revelation, due to its higher cost, weight, and bulk. We also prefer the baffle design of many other quilts over that of the Flex.

The Flex has horizontal continuous baffles that can make it more difficult to keep down fill where you need it most. Continuous baffles allow you to shift down around in your quilt to pile it up where you need it most. Many modern quilts use this construction to help keep costs lower for the user, but quiltmakers will often incorporate different patterns into the design to keep down from shifting too much throughout the night as you toss and turn. The Revelation, for example, uses U-shaped continuous baffles to prevent down from shifting away from your core.

Hikers who tend to stay put while snoozing likely won’t find this to be an issue, though. Those looking for premium features at a price that won’t induce sticker shock will love the water-resistant design, the highly effective pad attachment, and the convenient internal stash pocket.

  • Enlightened Equipment Accomplice 20

Best ultralight two-person backpacking quilt

Price: $560

Weight: 2 lb. 5 oz.

  • Ultralight for two
  • Cheaper than buying two UL quilts
  • Less versatile than some (impractical to use on solo trips)
  • Can feel drafts between sleeping pads

The Enlightened Equipment Accomplice is our favorite shared sleep system for couples who like keeping weight to a minimum and snuggles to a maximum.

It’s one of very few double backpacking quilts on the market, and it’s a great value compared to buying two separate quilts or a heavier double sleeping bag. It’s also a little lighter per person than most other quilts on our list. We typically have one person carry the quilt while the other carries the shelter to even out the weight.

We also like to use this quilt for car camping – since it’s luxurious enough for the frontcountry and light enough for the backcountry, the price is even more worth it. CleverHiker Gear Analyst, Heather Eldridge, loves using this quilt for all kinds of adventures with her husband. She’s taken it backpacking in Oregon’s Eagle Cap Wilderness as well as car camping in the high desert, and she loves that the roomy cut provides ample space to sleep cuddled up or cozied on your own side.

That said, one issue with a roomy sleep system is that it can be harder to keep warm. We recommend always packing along the included pad connectors to eliminate dead space between your sleeping pads and prevent cold spots.

The Accomplice can be ordered as a stock quilt that ships out quickly, or you can customize it to your preferred specs if you’re not in a hurry to receive it. Couples who usually hit the trail together should heavily consider going with the Accomplice to save weight and money.

  • Therm-a-Rest Vesper 20

Price: $460

Weight: 1 lb. 3 oz.

  • Not warm enough for sub-freezing temperatures

The Therm-a-Rest Vesper 20 is one of the lightest and most packable backpacking quilts on the market, so it’s a popular summer quilt among ultralight hikers.

The Vesper is one of the few quilts that’s widely available in outdoor gear stores, so this could be a good option if you’re gearing up to hit the trail soon. That said, we think the REI Magma Trail Quilt 30 – also available immediately if you have an REI nearby that has it in stock – is the better buy. The Magma is considerably more affordable, weighs about the same, and is more durable. The Vesper is a bit warmer, but not enough to justify the higher cost in our opinion.

The Vesper is also quite narrow – it’s designed with a harsh taper that can feel cramped compared to other UL quilts. So side sleepers and those who shift around a lot in their sleep likely wouldn’t find this quilt to be the most comfortable option.

While the Vesper isn’t our first choice, it still earns a spot on this list for its ridiculously low weight and small packed size. Hikers looking to go as minimal as possible may find this quilt to be a perfect fit.

What’s most important to you in a backpacking quilt.

Your quilt will likely be one of the most expensive items in your backpack, and it’s also one of the most important. We find that spending a little more on a high-quality quilt that has the exact features you want is well worth the cost, but you can stay just as warm in our budget backpacking quilt picks as you will in our high-end custom favorites. You really can’t go wrong with any of our top picks below.

Best high-end quilts

Because backpacking quilts are hoodless and typically aren’t fully enclosed, they’re not always the best choice for chilly conditions. We typically use a quilt on trips where temperatures will stay above freezing for maximum comfort, but you can always turn up the heat by pairing your quilt with a warm hat or a down jacket .

If you’re a cold sleeper or you want to use your quilt in shoulder seasons, the extra warm picks below will keep you cozy. Many of these also come in even warmer models if you’ll be out in below-freezing conditions often.

WEIGHT & PACKABILITY

We were first drawn to quilts many years ago because of their exceptionally low weight and impressive packability. Keeping your pack weight low can make longer and tougher hikes more enjoyable, can help you meet loftier mileage goals, and will be easier on your joints in the long run.

Many 3-season backpacking quilts weigh in at under a pound and a half. A lot of them can be customized to be even lighter and more compressible if you’re willing to pay more for a higher-fill-power down.

CUSTOM VS. STOCK

Many backpacking quilts can be customized to your exact desired specs. This is awesome if you’re looking to keep your quilt under a certain weight or if you want specific length and width measurements.

That said, custom quilts can often take much longer to ship (typically between 4-8 weeks), so a ready-made quilt is the better option if you need it right away.

Critical Backpacking Quilt Considerations

aldi travel camp quilt

CHOOSING A TEMPERATURE RATING

Choosing the right temperature rating isn’t an exact science. Many factors contribute to warmth, like sleeping pad insulation, clothing , hydration , nutrition , and altitude.

For this list, we chose quilts with temperature ratings that we felt would be a good fit for most 3-season trips. Most of the quilts on this list will keep the average user comfortable when temperatures dip to freezing, or a few degrees below. But hikers who sleep cold will likely want to bump up a notch in temperature rating to extend the usefulness of their quilt.

If you’re using your quilt in a tent rather than a hammock, it’s a good idea to purchase a pad attachment system (if it’s not already included with your quilt) when placing your order. Attaching your quilt to your pad will cut down on chilly drafts that can sap warmth through the open sides. You should always have a warm hat or a down jacket with a hood to wear to bed since quilts don’t have hoods. You can also sleep in base layers , gloves , and down booties to boost warmth. Other tricks include eating a high-calorie snack right before bed, staying well hydrated, putting a hot water bottle inside your quilt by your feet, and sleeping with a warm sleeping bag liner .

aldi travel camp quilt

The length and width you choose is dependent upon your body measurements and your sleeping style. Make sure you pick a quilt that’s long enough to comfortably fit your body from your feet to your chin.

Measure your shoulder girth to find the correct width; we recommend bumping up one size if you’re a side sleeper or a tosser-turner.

If you’re a cold sleeper, it can be nice to also bump up one size in length so you can pull the quilt over your head on chilly nights.

WHERE DOES DOWN COME FROM?

Down is the fluffy, small plumage found underneath the outer feather layer on ducks and geese. These tiny fibers insulate the birds and keep them warm in frigid conditions. Most down is a byproduct of the meat industry.

aldi travel camp quilt

AVOIDING INFERIOR QUALITY AND POOR ETHICS

Sometimes affordable backpacking quilts have synthetic fill mixed in with the down feathers or are solely stuffed with synthetic insulation. For the best insulating value and warmth-to-weight ratio, look for backpacking quilts that’re made with 100% duck or goose down. If the fill power isn’t advertised, it’s likely the quilt isn’t top quality and won’t pack down as small. Inexpensive down bags are also sometimes made with materials that are unethically sourced. To be sure you’re not supporting bad practices, like force feeding or live plucking, check whether a company is Traceable Down or Responsible Down certified. Companies that use good practices are generally proud of it and clearly state it for their customers to see. For us, it’s worth paying a bit more for the peace of mind.

DOWN FILL POWER

The fill power (fp) of a down quilt measures the quality of the down insulation in the bag. Higher-fill-power down is more expensive, but it weighs less and compresses more than lower-fill-power down. Though a higher fp does provide more warmth for the same weight, fill power alone does not dictate warmth. This is where fill weight – the actual amount of down in a quilt – comes in. This is why it’s important to look at both fill power and fill weight when determining how warm a quilt will be.

In general, 800-fill-power and up is considered high-quality down. Anything lower than that will be more cost effective, but won’t have as impressive warmth-to-weight performance.

aldi travel camp quilt

Durable water repellent (DWR) is a treatment that causes water to bead up on the outer shell of a quilt rather than soak in. This treatment doesn’t make a quilt anywhere near waterproof, but it does add some protection in damp conditions. It will wear off and need to be reapplied over time, but don’t worry, re-treatment is easy.

WASHING & STORAGE

Down is a durable material, but it loses some of its loft if it isn’t stored properly and when it gets oily or dirty over time. If properly maintained, a down quilt can last for many years. For details on down care, visit our article on How to Repair, Wash, Store, & Care For Your Sleeping Bag .

Adventuridge Products Review (Who Makes, Gear, Tent, Cooler)

  • October 5, 2021 /
  • By James V. /

Sometimes it is hard to keep up with the ever-changing consumer product lineup. What you used and liked last year, mysteriously disappeared from store shelves this year leaving you scrambling to find a replacement. It is not an easy task sometimes.

According to the Justia Trademark website, Adventuridge and its products are a trademark owned by Aldi Stores. The country those products are made is listed as China. There is a broad range of products sold under that brand name.

To learn more about Adventuridge and its product line up just continue to read our review. It has the information you want to know about so you can make a smart product purchase in the future. Take a few minutes and get up to speed on this trademark brand name

Who Sells Adventuridge Camping Gear?

Who-Sells-Adventuridge-Camping-Gear

We have found two outlets so far that carry this brand’s product lines. The first is ALDI stores which seem to sell almost any product that can be made under the sun. They can do that by highlighting them for a short period in their ALDI Finds section.

That is the case when it comes to their Adventuridge brand. Some time those camping gear items are placed under the Aldi Finds section which means that they will not be sold for very long. because of this product rotation, you have to be quick to make a purchase or you have to wait until the store brings the item back soon.

Another outlet that seems to be more stable and carries a lot of Adventuridge products is pngLine. It advertises a variety of this brand’s products on its web page. It seems that the outlet doesn't carry them in large quantities as the Adventuridge tent is not listed in their product lineup at this time.

Who Makes Adventuridge Products?

This is a good question. Despite being a mostly European outlet, the products seem to be made in China. At least that is what the product labels state. Unfortunately, the actual Chinese company that makes those products is not listed.

That means that it could be one company making all the Adventuridge camping items or a group of them. It all depends on the agreement between Aldi and the Chinese. One interesting issue that has arisen during our research for this article is that some of the products may state that the warranty is backed by The Outdoor Recreation Group.

This was the case for the Adventuridge Watertight Storage Case and that product came with a 2-year warranty.

When we checked that company’s website, it did not list the Adventuridge brand on it. The backing of the warranty may be possible but that also is between Aldi and TORG.

It seems that in its quest to keep its pricing low, Aldi searches for the lowest cost deals to them and then passes that saving son to you.

Who Makes Adventuridge Tents?

Who-Makes-Adventuridge-Tents

It seems that Adventuridge is an off-brand that gets its products from a variety of different companies. Those other companies make the tents and simply place the Adventuridge brand label on the material and the packaging.

Right now, it seems that the popular tent maker Wenzel makes tents for the Adventuridge brand. The Wenzel tents seem to get good reviews and are some of the better ones made according to those reviews. On Amazon, they get between 4 and 4.5 stars with a large number of reviewers making their experience known.

What that means is that Aldi is not selling some knock off made elsewhere but does try to find some top-quality manufacturers to make its products. Aldi is not in the manufacturing business and does not make its own products.

Everything you need to set up the tent is included in the packages so that should not be a problem for you. Of course, we should state that the information we got came from 2017 and a 2020 review confirms that the tents are still being made by Wenzel.

Is Adventuridge a Good Brand?

The answer to that question will depend on several factors. How you treat the products is just one of those factors and rougher treatment will tend to wear down the product a lot faster.

Then it will depend on who makes those products. While Wenzel may be the manufacturing company, that does not mean that company makes its tents in America or Europe. They can still be made in China as the water-resistant case is.

Another factor will be the construction materials used to create those products. Lower-quality ingredients coupled with lower quality manufacturing standards tend to lower the quality of the product.

So far, the products made for Aldi tend to be on the better side of the issue but that has not stopped the company from selling lower quality items. It will depend on all those factors and more on how good the quality will be.

Aldi Camping Gear Review

Aldi-Camping-Gear-Review

The company’s policy of doing short-term sales of their products makes it hard to review. it is a unique setup as the products can change from year to year as well as the original maker can be changed every time they bring the camping gear back to their stores.

The 4 in 1 airbed seems to be a consistent product and it does provide you with 9 inches of padding between you and the ground. Then its 75 by 29-inch size makes it a comfortable place to sleep for one person.

This portion of the Aldi camping gear comes with a hand pump, waterproof top, and other features. Their Queen size air bed with pump has been sold under two different Aldi brand names. Both the Adventuridge and Bestway labels have been placed on them.

Their camp hammock measures over 106 by 33 inches overall and its steel frame weighs almost 20 pounds. It will hold up to 300 pounds and has a mesh design for ventilation.

Their camp cot has been redesigned to make it lighter than the predecessors were. It measures roughly 74 by almost 30 inches in size. It may not be easy to set up.

Adventuridge Tent Reviews

The tents, and they come in different sizes, are made by Wenzel. The quality you get will be the same quality that the company places in its own products. The 6 person tent gives you about 72 inches at the center for headroom and measures out to 10 by 8 feet in size.

The color options you have are blue and green and the shape is a dome style. Its cost is approx. $50. The 4 person model has some limitations to it and its 9 by 7-foot size is just one of those restrictions.

For headroom, you are looking at 48 inches but the price is right at about $30. The problem is that this tent is more fitting for 2 people than 4. Both tents feature an e-port that allows you to attach extension cords if you need power for lighting or your computer and other electronic devices.

With the 6 person option, you also get a mesh loft to help you store needed items up and out of your way. The 4 person model does not have this feature. The warranties for both tents are serviced through Wenzel and they usually provide good customer service for all of their products no matter the name attached to them.

Adventuridge Cooler Reviews

Adventuridge-Cooler-Reviews

Aldi usually has camping events at their stores twice a year so you have 2 chances to pick up the 30 Liter cool box that will be reviewed here. We cannot guarantee which size of cooler they will have at these events.

The nice thing about this model is that it can be powered by 2 different sources. For those countries that use 240 electricity, there is a plug for that power source. If you do not have that option there is a plug for a 12-volt power source.

Also, you get a temperature control knob that lets you adjust how hot or cold you want the contents to be. In case you have a power problem the cool box does come with 2 spare fuses so your food should not spoil if the fuse blows.

The nice thing about this cooler is that it will cool 20 degrees lower than the outside temperature level. Be careful as cold food should not be stored at temperatures higher than40 degrees F or 4 degrees C.

The hottest you can go will be 55 degrees C or 140 degrees F. There is a rocker switch letting you change from cooling to heating function. The drawback to this device is that it cannot cool food in very hot weather.

It is at its best when you use it in the cooler seasons like Spring or the Fall.

Adventure Ridge Camping Kitchen

It is hard to say if this is a discontinued item or not. So far all we could find out about this product are the different images found online. If you can get it during those bi-annual camping events then it may be a good purchase.

This kitchen comes designed to hold your Aldi grill and has walls on 3 sides to protect the food from wind and so on. Underneath the cooking surface, you will find a closed cabinet type design with shelves.

You can keep your food organized and easy to reach as well as protected from wild animals. Just zip up the roll-up doors and you should be good to go. The size is about average height and not made for really tall people.

Plus, it is foldable so it stores away easily when not in use. The materials used are metal and fabric, but how durable those materials are remains to be seen. The price is not known either as it is not listed at the Aldi stores at the time of this writing.

Adventuridge Camping Stove Grill

Adventuridge-Camping-Stove-Grill

The portable gas grill measures 17 inches and it looks like it can cook up a variety of meals with no trouble at all. There is a grease trap underneath with the handle almost front and center for easy removal.

Next to the grease trap is your power and temperature knob. You can adjust your cooking temperature without taking your eyes off your food. Its cost is $70 roughly but it is usually placed in the Aldi finds section of the store and may not be back till next year, if at all.

You get a 2-year warranty on the grill and a 5-year warranty on the burner but Aldi does not make the product so it doesn't do any servicing on the grill. All warranty claims are handled by the company that makes the grill and that is GHP Group.

Its specs include 260 square inches of cooking space, 18,000 BTU power, holds a one-pound gas canister (not included and not sold by Aldi), and push and turn ignition. The grill is pre-seasoned to make it work better.

Some Final Words

Aldi is trying to become a major player in the grocery and department store industry. They have been making changes but, whether those changes are for the better are not remains to be seen.

Its business model is different and it is partnering with different stores and renting out space to help their exposure. Despite these changes, the success of Aldi’s goal will depend on the quality of the products it sells and the quality of those products is not always good.

If you're not fly-kicking your way through Aldi to buy this tent, you're doing summer wrong

11 best things to pack for a Yellowstone National Park holiday

11 best things to pack for a Yellowstone National Park holiday

Forget the Manson Family, Heaven's Gate and the Church of Scientology: Aldi is the world's weirdest cult. But... before we get too ahead of ourselves laughing at those who faint at the sight of knock off gin, cheap rose and Sonoma bread that costs $2 less than from other places, sometimes it pays to be a Top Fan of a budget German supermarket...

Why? Because in news that will have campers and festival goers breaking out their 'Real French Champagne,' Aldi's Camping Special Buys are back, just in time for summer.

Whether you're after a budget tent you don't have to be delicate with, a double camp chair or a portable fridge freezer, there's something in the range for every fan of the outdoors, for an absurdly cheap price.

And worst of all, for me - someone who recently spent over a thousand dollars on a tent from America, which I will probably manage to break on my first or second outing, and which saw me stung with unforeseen taxes to the tune of $300 and a whopping international transaction fee - Aldi's pop up Special Buy tent costs just $169.

Here's everything in the range that's absolutely sending me.

Pop Up 6 Person Tent ($169)

It's easy to set up, and cheap as chips. As one online reviewer called it, it's basically a knock off OzTrail fast frame tent but at a third of the price...

Priced at $169, the Instant Up Tent provides incredible protection and comfort, with insect mesh, sealed seams, and an oversized door with a large front awning for what Aldi calls "spacious living" and "a restful night’s sleep under the stars." Thanks to being a pop up tent, set up is pretty simple, too.

Deluxe Double Camp Chair ($79.99)

Room for two (or one person to put their feet up). Now that's a win.

With its durable steel frame, thickly padded seat and backrest and side storage pocket, this double camp chair is an absolute steal. Did I mention it's less than $80?

Queen Air Bed 240V ($69.99)

Why sleep on a thin hiking mattress when you can doze like royalty on this?

With its tritech support system, built in pillow, generous size (don't worry, it fits in the pop up tent) and 4 minute inflation, this Queen mattress won't let you down (and if it does, at least you didn't spend a fortune on it, and you can take it back to Aldi for a refund).

75L Dualzone Portable Fridge Freezer ($599)

If you're not fanging your friends beers from something like this, this summer, you're not living.

I'm not a technical person, but this sounds like an engineer's wet dream. The Aldi description features phrases like "compartments work independently," "Includes AC and DC power cords" and "Superior insulation with 60mm walls and 53mm lid." It has also got a steel body and lid, which sounds sturdy, and a "Secop compressor." Whether that sounded like gobbledegook to you or not, $599 for a portable fridge freezer is a bargain. Plus: where else are you going to throw your impulse organic farmhouse purchases of sausages, cheese and cider?

Camping High Chair ($49.99)

It's not just at home your kids can sit in a highchair and refuse to eat - now they can do it on the road too!

This handy piece of kit is great for campers with kids. It includes a carry bag, a dual motion safety lock, non slip feet, a removable plastic table and a 5 point harness, and has a 15 kg weight capacity.

Aldi's Camping Special Buys Range is available from September 16, 2023.

Open Thread: Adventuridge 6-Person Tent

Last Updated on July 9, 2023

This post is an open thread and contains affiliate links .

EDITOR’S NOTE: Updated for 2023.

When school lets out for the summer, my family routinely plans multiple camping trips. Some of my extended family own a camper, so my own immediate family will pack our tent and meet them. We especially like state parks in our region, which are nice for getting away while also preserving some amenities like showerhouses and access to a camp store for things like ice and firewood.

Aldi has firmly established itself as a major source of camping supplies during the summer. The grocer often leverages its rotating limited buy section to cycle in everything from tents and bedding to backpacks and other accessories . Aldi gear holds a regular place in our camping inventory, including self-inflating mats , lanterns , and foldable duffle bags .

Central to the camping experience is a good shelter, and on that front, Aldi has sold a number of tents over the years. We own, and have used, a small 9′ x 7′ Adventuridge tent . In addition, fellow writer Kelly owns the 14′ x 10′ model and her husband has used it for their family adventures. Aldi has sold other tent models, too, including this one that fits somewhere in between.

What We Know:

Adventuridge 6-Person Tent

The Adventuridge 6-Person Tent (Product Code: 45173) is an Aldi Find, which means it’s only in stores for a short time . Once it’s gone, it’s gone, and you won’t be able to find it again until it comes back the following year, if at all. Aldi does not ship products online .

This tent cost $59.99 in May of 2023. That’s the same price it cost in 2022. It’s $10 more than in previous years , but it’s also considerably less than most other tents of this size and capacity.

Most Aldi tents, including this one, are made by Wenzel , which makes a variety of camping equipment. We’ve generally had good experiences with our Wenzel-made Aldi gear, and when we have had a problem, we had a positive warranty experience .

According to Aldi, the tent’s features include:

  • Measures 10′ x 8.5′
  • 72″ (7 feet) center height
  • 9-minute pitch time
  • Water resistant
  • Removable rain fly
  • Mesh gear loft with lantern loop
  • Four corner guy lines for added stability
  • Hooped fly pole over door for improved ventilation and weather protection
  • Pin and ring for easy setup
  • Large “D” style door
  • E-Port for electrical cord access
  • Large sewn-in mud mat
  • Includes 12 steel ground stakes
  • 14.37-lb. carry weight
  • Available in Blue or Green

A note about capacity: tents often advertise as being for a certain number of people. This one, for example, is listed as a 6-person tent. In our experience, that number usually requires you to pack campers in like sardines. More realistically, this is a tent for 2-4 people, especially if you intend to keep a lot of gear inside the tent.

What We Don’t Know:

While our writers have spent considerable time with both the smaller 9′ x 7′ tent and the 14′ x 10′ tent, we have not tested out this exact model. That’s why we’ve created this open thread for users to share their experiences.

Do you have experience with this tent? Let us know in the comments.

About Joshua

aldi travel camp quilt

Bought this a month ago and used it yesterday. Setup is easy and I can see that all of the seams in the rain fly and most of the seams in the tent have seam tape so that is a plus as I wasn’t expecting that in a tent that is this cheap. The stakes are pretty worthless in any ground that is harder than your lawn but those can be replaced pretty easily. I’m satisfied with my purchase.

Just bought this tent yesterday and is still in box. Thx for the info on the taped seams.

In Transit: Notes from the Underground

Jun 06 2018.

Spend some time in one of Moscow’s finest museums.

Subterranean commuting might not be anyone’s idea of a good time, but even in a city packing the war-games treasures and priceless bejeweled eggs of the Kremlin Armoury and the colossal Soviet pavilions of the VDNKh , the Metro holds up as one of Moscow’s finest museums. Just avoid rush hour.

The Metro is stunning and provides an unrivaled insight into the city’s psyche, past and present, but it also happens to be the best way to get around. Moscow has Uber, and the Russian version called Yandex Taxi , but also some nasty traffic. Metro trains come around every 90 seconds or so, at a more than 99 percent on-time rate. It’s also reasonably priced, with a single ride at 55 cents (and cheaper in bulk). From history to tickets to rules — official and not — here’s what you need to know to get started.

A Brief Introduction Buying Tickets Know Before You Go (Down) Rules An Easy Tour

A Brief Introduction

Moscow’s Metro was a long time coming. Plans for rapid transit to relieve the city’s beleaguered tram system date back to the Imperial era, but a couple of wars and a revolution held up its development. Stalin revived it as part of his grand plan to modernize the Soviet Union in the 1920s and 30s. The first lines and tunnels were constructed with help from engineers from the London Underground, although Stalin’s secret police decided that they had learned too much about Moscow’s layout and had them arrested on espionage charges and deported.

The beauty of its stations (if not its trains) is well-documented, and certainly no accident. In its illustrious first phases and particularly after the Second World War, the greatest architects of Soviet era were recruited to create gleaming temples celebrating the Revolution, the USSR, and the war triumph. No two stations are exactly alike, and each of the classic showpieces has a theme. There are world-famous shrines to Futurist architecture, a celebration of electricity, tributes to individuals and regions of the former Soviet Union. Each marble slab, mosaic tile, or light fixture was placed with intent, all in service to a station’s aesthetic; each element, f rom the smallest brass ear of corn to a large blood-spattered sword on a World War II mural, is an essential part of the whole.

aldi travel camp quilt

The Metro is a monument to the Soviet propaganda project it was intended to be when it opened in 1935 with the slogan “Building a Palace for the People”. It brought the grand interiors of Imperial Russia to ordinary Muscovites, celebrated the Soviet Union’s past achievements while promising its citizens a bright Soviet future, and of course, it was a show-piece for the world to witness the might and sophistication of life in the Soviet Union.

It may be a museum, but it’s no relic. U p to nine million people use it daily, more than the London Underground and New York Subway combined. (Along with, at one time, about 20 stray dogs that learned to commute on the Metro.)

In its 80+ year history, the Metro has expanded in phases and fits and starts, in step with the fortunes of Moscow and Russia. Now, partly in preparation for the World Cup 2018, it’s also modernizing. New trains allow passengers to walk the entire length of the train without having to change carriages. The system is becoming more visitor-friendly. (There are helpful stickers on the floor marking out the best selfie spots .) But there’s a price to modernity: it’s phasing out one of its beloved institutions, the escalator attendants. Often they are middle-aged or elderly women—“ escalator grandmas ” in news accounts—who have held the post for decades, sitting in their tiny kiosks, scolding commuters for bad escalator etiquette or even bad posture, or telling jokes . They are slated to be replaced, when at all, by members of the escalator maintenance staff.

For all its achievements, the Metro lags behind Moscow’s above-ground growth, as Russia’s capital sprawls ever outwards, generating some of the world’s worst traffic jams . But since 2011, the Metro has been in the middle of an ambitious and long-overdue enlargement; 60 new stations are opening by 2020. If all goes to plan, the 2011-2020 period will have brought 125 miles of new tracks and over 100 new stations — a 40 percent increase — the fastest and largest expansion phase in any period in the Metro’s history.

Buying Tickets

  • Ticket machines have a button to switch to English.
  • You can buy specific numbers of rides: 1, 2, 5, 11, 20, or 60. Hold up fingers to show how many rides you want to buy.
  • There is also a 90-minute ticket , which gets you 1 trip on the metro plus an unlimited number of transfers on other transport (bus, tram, etc) within 90 minutes.
  • Or, you can buy day tickets with unlimited rides: one day (218₽/ US$4), three days (415₽/US$7) or seven days (830₽/US$15). Check the rates here to stay up-to-date.
  • If you’re going to be using the Metro regularly over a few days, it’s worth getting a Troika card , a contactless, refillable card you can use on all public transport. Using the Metro is cheaper with one of these: a single ride is 36₽, not 55₽. Buy them and refill them in the Metro stations, and they’re valid for 5 years, so you can keep it for next time. Or, if you have a lot of cash left on it when you leave, you can get it refunded at the Metro Service Centers at Ulitsa 1905 Goda, 25 or at Staraya Basmannaya 20, Building 1.
  • You can also buy silicone bracelets and keychains with built-in transport chips that you can use as a Troika card. (A Moscow Metro Fitbit!) So far, you can only get these at the Pushkinskaya metro station Live Helpdesk and souvenir shops in the Mayakovskaya and Trubnaya metro stations. The fare is the same as for the Troika card.
  • You can also use Apple Pay and Samsung Pay.

Rules, spoken and unspoken

No smoking, no drinking, no filming, no littering. Photography is allowed, although it used to be banned.

Stand to the right on the escalator. Break this rule and you risk the wrath of the legendary escalator attendants. (No shenanigans on the escalators in general.)

Get out of the way. Find an empty corner to hide in when you get off a train and need to stare at your phone. Watch out getting out of the train in general; when your train doors open, people tend to appear from nowhere or from behind ornate marble columns, walking full-speed.

Always offer your seat to elderly ladies (what are you, a monster?).

An Easy Tour

This is no Metro Marathon ( 199 stations in 20 hours ). It’s an easy tour, taking in most—though not all—of the notable stations, the bulk of it going clockwise along the Circle line, with a couple of short detours. These stations are within minutes of one another, and the whole tour should take about 1-2 hours.

Start at Mayakovskaya Metro station , at the corner of Tverskaya and Garden Ring,  Triumfalnaya Square, Moskva, Russia, 125047.

1. Mayakovskaya.  Named for Russian Futurist Movement poet Vladimir Mayakovsky and an attempt to bring to life the future he imagined in his poems. (The Futurist Movement, natch, was all about a rejecting the past and celebrating all things speed, industry, modern machines, youth, modernity.) The result: an Art Deco masterpiece that won the National Grand Prix for architecture at the New York World’s Fair in 1939. It’s all smooth, rounded shine and light, and gentle arches supported by columns of dark pink marble and stainless aircraft steel. Each of its 34 ceiling niches has a mosaic. During World War II, the station was used as an air-raid shelter and, at one point, a bunker for Stalin. He gave a subdued but rousing speech here in Nov. 6, 1941 as the Nazis bombed the city above.

Take the 3/Green line one station to:

2. Belorusskaya. Opened in 1952, named after the connected Belarussky Rail Terminal, which runs trains between Moscow and Belarus. This is a light marble affair with a white, cake-like ceiling, lined with Belorussian patterns and 12 Florentine ceiling mosaics depicting life in Belarussia when it was built.

Transfer onto the 1/Brown line. Then, one stop (clockwise) t o:

3. Novoslobodskaya.  This station was designed around the stained-glass panels, which were made in Latvia, because Alexey Dushkin, the Soviet starchitect who dreamed it up (and also designed Mayakovskaya station) couldn’t find the glass and craft locally. The stained glass is the same used for Riga’s Cathedral, and the panels feature plants, flowers, members of the Soviet intelligentsia (musician, artist, architect) and geometric shapes.

Go two stops east on the 1/Circle line to:

4. Komsomolskaya. Named after the Komsomol, or the Young Communist League, this might just be peak Stalin Metro style. Underneath the hub for three regional railways, it was intended to be a grand gateway to Moscow and is today its busiest station. It has chandeliers; a yellow ceiling with Baroque embellishments; and in the main hall, a colossal red star overlaid on golden, shimmering tiles. Designer Alexey Shchusev designed it as an homage to the speech Stalin gave at Red Square on Nov. 7, 1941, in which he invoked Russia’s illustrious military leaders as a pep talk to Soviet soldiers through the first catastrophic year of the war.   The station’s eight large mosaics are of the leaders referenced in the speech, such as Alexander Nevsky, a 13th-century prince and military commander who bested German and Swedish invading armies.

One more stop clockwise to Kurskaya station,  and change onto the 3/Blue  line, and go one stop to:

5. Baumanskaya.   Opened in 1944. Named for the Bolshevik Revolutionary Nikolai Bauman , whose monument and namesake district are aboveground here. Though he seemed like a nasty piece of work (he apparently once publicly mocked a woman he had impregnated, who later hung herself), he became a Revolutionary martyr when he was killed in 1905 in a skirmish with a monarchist, who hit him on the head with part of a steel pipe. The station is in Art Deco style with atmospherically dim lighting, and a series of bronze sculptures of soldiers and homefront heroes during the War. At one end, there is a large mosaic portrait of Lenin.

Stay on that train direction one more east to:

6. Elektrozavodskaya. As you may have guessed from the name, this station is the Metro’s tribute to all thing electrical, built in 1944 and named after a nearby lightbulb factory. It has marble bas-relief sculptures of important figures in electrical engineering, and others illustrating the Soviet Union’s war-time struggles at home. The ceiling’s recurring rows of circular lamps give the station’s main tunnel a comforting glow, and a pleasing visual effect.

Double back two stops to Kurskaya station , and change back to the 1/Circle line. Sit tight for six stations to:

7. Kiyevskaya. This was the last station on the Circle line to be built, in 1954, completed under Nikita Khrushchev’ s guidance, as a tribute to his homeland, Ukraine. Its three large station halls feature images celebrating Ukraine’s contributions to the Soviet Union and Russo-Ukrainian unity, depicting musicians, textile-working, soldiers, farmers. (One hall has frescoes, one mosaics, and the third murals.) Shortly after it was completed, Khrushchev condemned the architectural excesses and unnecessary luxury of the Stalin era, which ushered in an epoch of more austere Metro stations. According to the legend at least, he timed the policy in part to ensure no Metro station built after could outshine Kiyevskaya.

Change to the 3/Blue line and go one stop west.

8. Park Pobedy. This is the deepest station on the Metro, with one of the world’s longest escalators, at 413 feet. If you stand still, the escalator ride to the surface takes about three minutes .) Opened in 2003 at Victory Park, the station celebrates two of Russia’s great military victories. Each end has a mural by Georgian artist Zurab Tsereteli, who also designed the “ Good Defeats Evil ” statue at the UN headquarters in New York. One mural depicts the Russian generals’ victory over the French in 1812 and the other, the German surrender of 1945. The latter is particularly striking; equal parts dramatic, triumphant, and gruesome. To the side, Red Army soldiers trample Nazi flags, and if you look closely there’s some blood spatter among the detail. Still, the biggest impressions here are the marble shine of the chessboard floor pattern and the pleasingly geometric effect if you view from one end to the other.

Keep going one more stop west to:

9. Slavyansky Bulvar.  One of the Metro’s youngest stations, it opened in 2008. With far higher ceilings than many other stations—which tend to have covered central tunnels on the platforms—it has an “open-air” feel (or as close to it as you can get, one hundred feet under). It’s an homage to French architect Hector Guimard, he of the Art Nouveau entrances for the Paris M é tro, and that’s precisely what this looks like: A Moscow homage to the Paris M é tro, with an additional forest theme. A Cyrillic twist on Guimard’s Metro-style lettering over the benches, furnished with t rees and branch motifs, including creeping vines as towering lamp-posts.

Stay on the 3/Blue line and double back four stations to:

10. Arbatskaya. Its first iteration, Arbatskaya-Smolenskaya station, was damaged by German bombs in 1941. It was rebuilt in 1953, and designed to double as a bomb shelter in the event of nuclear war, although unusually for stations built in the post-war phase, this one doesn’t have a war theme. It may also be one of the system’s most elegant: Baroque, but toned down a little, with red marble floors and white ceilings with gilded bronze c handeliers.

Jump back on the 3/Blue line  in the same direction and take it one more stop:

11. Ploshchad Revolyutsii (Revolution Square). Opened in 1938, and serving Red Square and the Kremlin . Its renowned central hall has marble columns flanked by 76 bronze statues of Soviet heroes: soldiers, students, farmers, athletes, writers, parents. Some of these statues’ appendages have a yellow sheen from decades of Moscow’s commuters rubbing them for good luck. Among the most popular for a superstitious walk-by rub: the snout of a frontier guard’s dog, a soldier’s gun (where the touch of millions of human hands have tapered the gun barrel into a fine, pointy blade), a baby’s foot, and a woman’s knee. (A brass rooster also sports the telltale gold sheen, though I am told that rubbing the rooster is thought to bring bad luck. )

Now take the escalator up, and get some fresh air.
