Citizens of many countries can head to Doha visa free © Maja Topcagic / Stocksy United

Home to one of the world’s best airports, Qatar is an attractive layover destination. But why not extend your transit stop? Many nationalities are eligible for visa-free entry to Qatar, so you can leave the airport and start exploring with minimal hassle.

The visa requirements for entering Qatar depend on your nationality. For most travelers, visiting for tourism is straightforward, but the logistics of getting into the country can be more time-consuming and expensive if your home country is not on the list for visa-exempt travel.

Here’s our guide to Qatar’s entry requirements, with information on visa types, costs, and details on how to apply for one.

What you need to know about visas in Qatar

Hukoomi , Qatar’s official e-government portal, has a helpful online guide to the visas available for travel to Qatar. Visa applications are typically easily made via the MOI website, which has a handy tool to check whether you need a visa .

Citizens of more than 90 countries are eligible for visa-free entry into Qatar, with varying maximum lengths of stay depending on your nationality. Travelers from eligible countries can obtain a visa waiver on arrival to Qatar upon presentation of a valid passport with a minimum of six months’ validity and a confirmed onward ticket.

For nationals of approximately 40 countries – including many European destinations – the visa waiver is valid for 180 days from the date of issuance and entitles its holder to spend up to 90 days in Qatar during a single trip or on multiple trips.

For nationals of approximately 50 other countries, including the US, Australia, the UK, Canada, and South Africa, visa-free stays are limited to 30 days, with the possibility to extend for an additional 30 days after you arrive for a fee of QR200. India and Pakistan are also on this list but there are currently additional requirements, including a hotel booking made via the Discover Qatar website. Pakistani nationals must also present proof of polio vaccination.

If you’re a citizen or resident of another Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) country (Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Saudi Arabia, or the United Arab Emirates), you can obtain a one-month GCC Resident Visit Visa on arrival or through a Qatari embassy, though you’ll need to provide proof that you work in one of around 200 eligible professions. The official list of approved careers is in Arabic, but translations can be found on other websites. This visa is renewable for an additional three months.

Visitors from most other countries can apply for a 30-day tourist visa in advance. You will likely be required to supply additional documentation and pay a fee. Visitors from Israel are not typically allowed to enter Qatar.

Does Qatar have a working holiday visa?

Qatar does not offer a working holiday visa. Student visas are available for international students wishing to study at Qatar’s universities, and several visas are available for business travelers.

What are the visa rules for visiting Qatar during the 2022 FIFA World Cup?

If you are planning to travel to Qatar between November 1, 2022, and January 23, 2023, you need to apply for a Hayya Card , which provides entry to Qatar, regardless of whether you are intending to attend a World Cup game. Ticket holders from Israel are permitted to enter Qatar for the tournament.

For the latest Qatar visa information, visit the Ministry of Interior (MOI) website or contact a Qatar consulate in your region.

Therefore, if you belong to the list of countries that are permitted visa-free entry, it means you do not have to make visa arrangement prior to your trip to Qatar, and you would be eligible for a visa waiver (a definite length of stay in the country without visa) upon arrival, free of charge.

This is not applicable to family visit visas.

All residents, except women and children sponsored by their father or husband, will require an exit visa before leaving Qatar. Exit permits are usually arranged by sponsors.

Authorized users can complete the procedure of exit visa online by logging on to http://portal.www.gov.qa/wps/portal/topics  or in person by going to MOI Passports and Airport Security Department. Else, there are immigration offices in Hamad Medical Corporation, Al Dayin, Al Khor, Al Shahaniya, Mesaimeer, Q-Post, Doha Industrial Area, Souq Waqif, Al Wakrah, Al Shamal, Dukhan, and Umm Salal.

Exit permits can be either single or multiple. For online applications, select the exit permit type, and fill in all required fields including the applicant ID and passport numbers and pay requisite fee.

In the year 2020, Qatar made a series of reforms to its employment regulations eversince it was chosen to host the 2022 World Cup. Qatar has scrapped the mandatory exit permits otherwise required for migrant domestic staff and other groups, as part of its efforts to boost rights for guest workers.  Earlier, all foreigners working in Qatar had to obtain authorization from bosses to leave, but now only military people will routinely require such a dispensation.

Qatar has also done away with exit visa requirements for foreign workers including oil and gas workers, civil servants and employees of government bodies including Qatar Airways.

Currently, a domestic worker can enter and exit the country without having to submit their employer’s permission.

It is now possible for nationals and residents to purchase an e-gate card prior to going on vacation. This can help avoid normal immigration hassles. The e-gate card can be inserted at the e-gate and you can place your finger on a biometric scanner. These cards can be obtained at the airport immigration office, located opposite the airport. However, make sure that you carry your ID card with you. The use of e-gate is free. There is no need to pre-register before you use the e-gate. It can be used when arriving or departing from Qatar. ID card holders over the age of 18 can use this.

Kindly note: Visa rules are subject to sudden change without warning. Kindly contact the embassy in your country or the relevant authority in Qatar, as that is the only source of information that can be relied upon. The validity period of a free visit visa on arrival is also subjected to change often. ;

Entry, Exit and Visa Requirements

Tourist visas:  When traveling on a U.S. tourist passport, travelers may obtain a free visa upon arrival, if they have six-months validity in their passport and a return or onward ticket. The visa is valid for 30 days from the date of issuance and entitles the holder to spend up to 30 days in Qatar, or multiple entries during the 30-day validity. It may be extended for a further 30 days. See the Government of Qatar’s website for  visa information .

Former Residency Permit Holders:  Former resident permit holders seeking to return to Qatar should carry a “no objection letter” issued by their former sponsor.

For further information on residence permits, see the  Qatari government  or  U.S. Embassy website .

Exit Permits:

  • Exit permits are no longer required for U.S. citizens working in Qatar, with the exception of employees deemed “essential” by their employers, who must still be granted an exit permit.
  • If you owe money, you will be barred from exiting Qatar. Qatari banks place holds on accounts to ensure all debts are paid before you leave.
  • U.S. citizens with family residence visas do not need an exit permit. However, a family member who sponsors their dependents (usually the person employed in Qatar) can elect to receive instant notification if dependents attempt to depart the country.

Qatar does not recognize dual nationality.  If you hold Qatari citizenship, Qatari law requires that you enter and exit on your Qatari passport. Qatari authorities may confiscate your U.S. passport if you hold Qatari/U.S. dual nationality. Should this happen, contact the U.S. Embassy. The seizure does not constitute loss of U.S. citizenship.

Military Personnel  should consult the Department of Defense Foreign Clearance Guide before traveling, since different entry/exit requirements may apply. For further information, call the Host Nation Coordination Cell of the 379 th  Air Expeditionary Wing at 011-974-5551-0815.

Some restrictions  exist for foreign residents of Qatar who test positive for certain communicable diseases, including HIV/AIDs. Medical exams are required for individuals seeking residency in Qatar, but not for transit passengers or short-term visitors.  Qatari authorities will not bar HIV-positive temporary visitors from entry to Qatar based on their health status.  However, Qatar denies residency and employment to HIV or tuberculosis-positive applicants (among other communicable diseases).  Short-term visitors to Qatar with medications on their person are advised to carry a copy of their prescriptions. Please verify this information with the  Embassy of Qatar  before you travel.

Customs  regulations prohibit the import of alcohol over the duty-free cap, narcotics, pork products, weapons or weapons-related articles (hand cuffs, laser pointers, etc.), drones, professional photography equipment to include telescopic lenses, as well as pornographic or sexually-related materials.

See Qatar’s  website  for specific information regarding customs requirements.

In the event of an injury, appropriate medical treatment is typically available only in/near major cities. First responders are generally unable to access areas outside of major cities and to provide urgent medical treatment. U.S. citizens are encouraged to purchase medical evacuation insurance .

Local Laws & Special Circumstances

Exit bans prevent those faced with legal proceedings from leaving Qatar until their case is abandoned or resolved.  This can take months or years. The Government of Qatar does not offer any social support for individuals under exit bans.

Reasons for exit bans can include:

  • Labor or financial disputes
  • Personal debt (including bounced checks, credit card debt, and bank loans)
  • Outstanding contracts or leases
  • Traffic fines
  • Pending legal matters, including cases related to gestures or behavior reported by Qataris that are viewed as “offensive.”

U.S. citizens have been subjected to exit bans and/or placed in prison pending payment of debts.

Always carry a copy of your passport for proof of identity, or authorities may detain you for questioning.

Criminal Penalties:  You are subject to local laws. If you violate local laws, even unknowingly, you may be arrested, deported, or imprisoned.  Individuals establishing a business or practicing a profession that requires additional permits or licensing should seek information from the competent local authorities, prior to practicing or operating a business.

Furthermore, some laws are also prosecutable in the U.S., regardless of local law. For examples, see our website on  crimes against minors abroad  and the  Department of Justice  website.

Criminal penalties for certain offenses are much harsher than those in the U.S.:

  • Incidents involving obscene language, gestures, or insulting comments often result in arrest, imprisonment, and/or fines.
  • Alcohol-Related Offenses, including public intoxication, can result in severe penalties such as arrest, heavy fines, imprisonment, and/or deportation.  Qatar maintains a zero-tolerance policy against drinking and driving.
  • Use of Illegal Drugs can result in long jail sentences and steep fines.

Arrest Notification:  Qatari authorities do not routinely notify the U.S. Embassy of a U.S. citizen’s arrest. If you are arrested or detained, ask police or prison officials to notify the U.S. Embassy immediately. If you are not allowed to do so, ask a friend or family member to contact the U.S. Embassy.  See our  webpage  for further information.

For more serious crimes, Qatari authorities may not allow U.S. Embassy officials to visit until the initial interrogation is completed.

Qatari police sometimes arrest U.S. citizens without providing access to legal counsel.  You could be arrested for being a:

  • Potential witness to a crime (including traffic accidents involving injuries; slander, traffic arguments, etc.)
  • Relative of a suspect
  • Criminal Suspect

If arrested—regardless of the charge—you may spend 1-2 nights in jail before a hearing takes place. Once arrested, only the Qatari Public Prosecution and Courts have the authority to grant a release.

See our  webpage  for further information.

Qatari law favors employers over employees.  In the event of a contract or employment dispute, Qatari authorities refer to the Arabic language of a contract. Employees have limited recourse if their employer terminates a contract early. If a sponsor files a complaint against an employee who departed Qatar, the employee may be barred from returning to Qatar, even on a tourist or airport visa. Many terminated U.S. citizens have been barred from departing Qatar because of pre-existing debt.

Despite recent legal changes, transferring employment prior to the end of a contract often requires the permission of the previous employer and is subject to approval by the Ministry of the Interior. Additional mechanisms for transferring employers exist through the Ministry of Interior in cases such as bankruptcy, abuse, or repeated failure to pay an employee on time.

Drug Use: Most drugs that are illegal in the United States are also illegal in Qatar, including marijuana/THC, CBD products, and vape products. The potential consequences for use or possession may be harsh.

Clothing : Many public areas in Qatar have dress codes that require both men and women cover shoulders, chests, stomachs, and knees, and that tight leggings be covered by a long shirt or dress. Attire standards can vary between neighborhoods and facilities.  Faith-Based Travelers:  Religion is a very sensitive issue in Qatar; treat any discussions on religion with care and caution. The law provides for a prison sentence of up to seven years for defaming, desecrating, or committing blasphemy against Islam, Christianity, or Judaism. Public worship by non-Islamic faiths and atheism are illegal and subject to prosecution.

Proselytizing is against the law.  Attempts to covert a member of another religion or even “share your faith” can be considered “proselytizing.” Penalties cancan include deportation or imprisonment.

While you may import religious material for personal use,  bringing religious materials into the country for proselytizing purposes is prohibited.

Charitable activities, both religious and non-religious, must be approved in advance by the Ministry of Social Affairs.

LGBTQI+ Travelers:  Same-sex sexual relations between men are illegal, even if consensual. Penalties include lashing, lengthy prison sentences and/or deportation.

There is no law criminalizing same-sex sexual relations between women, though cultural norms are conservative.

Businesses are prohibited from selling and individuals are prohibited from distributing rainbow colored merchandise.

See our  LGBTI Travel Information  page and section 6 of our  Human Rights report  for further details.

Travelers with Disabilities: The law in Qatar prohibits discrimination against persons with physical, sensory, intellectual, or mental disabilities, the law is not enforced.  Social acceptance of persons with disabilities in public is not as prevalent as in the in the United States.  Expect accessibility to be limited in public transportation, lodging, communication/information, and general infrastructure.

Students : See our  Students Abroad  page and  FBI travel tips .

Women Travelers:  Unaccompanied expatriate women may be verbally and/or physically harassed. In deference to Islamic culture, avoid wearing sleeveless shirts, halter-tops, or shorts. Only wear athletic clothing in public when engaged in sports activities.

See our travel tips for  Women Travelers .

Journalists : Journalists, including independent content creators and vloggers, need specific visas and permissions to use photography and videography equipment, or to conduct interviews or reporting within Qatar. There is no legal guarantee of press freedom or freedom of expression in Qatar.

Photography : Photographing local people in Qatar, particularly women, is illegal without permission.

COVID-19 Testing:  COVID-19 tests are available from many local medical providers and hospitals. Testing is paid for by the individual or, in some instances, their insurance plan or employer. Private hospitals charge QR 50 - 160 test. Test results are usually provided by email, but some clinics require you to pick up the travel certificate in person. Please refer to the Ministry of Public Health’s webpage for additional information.

COVID-19 Vaccines:   The COVID-19 vaccine is available for U.S. citizens to receive in Qatar. Please refer to the Ministry of Public Health’s webpage for additional information.

Visit the FDA's website to learn more about FDA-approved vaccines in the United States.

Modern medical facilities and Western-style pharmacies are available. Doctors and hospitals expect immediate cash payment for health services.

For information on the Qatari national healthcare system, see the  Qatar Ministry of Health website .

For emergency services in Qatar, dial 999.

Ambulance services are widely available.

We do not pay medical bills.  Be aware that U.S. Medicare/Medicaid does not apply overseas. Most hospitals and doctors overseas do not accept U.S. health insurance.

Medical Insurance:  Make sure your health insurance plan provides coverage overseas. Most care providers overseas only accept cash payments. See  our webpage  for more information on insurance coverage. Visit the  U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  for more information on the type of insurance you should consider before you travel overseas.

We strongly recommend supplemental insurance to cover medical evacuation.

Always carry your prescription medication in original packaging, along with your doctor’s prescription. Some prescription medications from the United States are unavailable or restricted in Qatar, for example, stimulants, strong pain medications, and some medications used by HIV+ patients. Check with the  Qatari customs authority  on proper travel procedures and the  Ministry of Public Health  to ensure the medication is legal in Qatar. Discuss a health care plan with your doctor before you travel.

Contraceptives, Pregnancy, and Prenatal Care:  Sexual intercourse outside of marriage is illegal in Qatar.  As such, pregnant women must present a marriage certificate to receive prenatal care at medical facilities in Qatar.  Unmarried pregnant women should consult the U.S. Embassy prior to pursuing prenatal care in Qatar. Contraceptives are available over the counter with no prescription required. Emergency contraceptives are not available. We advise all travelers to plan accordingly.

Vaccinations : Be up-to-date on all  vaccinations  recommended by the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

Further Health Information:

  • World Health Organization
  • U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention  (CDC)

Air Quality:  Air quality is poor in Qatar, with frequent dust and particle pollution. Members of sensitive groups may experience more serious health effects. Visit  AirNow Department of State  for information on air quality at U.S. Embassies and Consulates.

The U.S. Embassy maintains a  list of doctors and hospitals . We do not endorse or recommend any specific medical provider or clinic.

Travel and Transportation

Road Conditions and Safety: For current traffic regulations, see the  Ministry of Interior’s Traffic Police  website.

Driving:  The legal minimum driving age is 18.  Holders of a U.S. issued driver’s license can drive in Qatar for two weeks, but most car rental agencies require an international driver’s license. Three-month Temporary Licenses are available.  International Driving Licenses are valid in Qatar for six months from the date of arrival.  Resident expatriates should apply for a full Qatari license. If you are caught operating a vehicle without a valid license, penalties can be severe.  For more information, see the Qatari Traffic Services website .

Traffic accidents  are one of the leading causes of death in Qatar. The extensive use of roundabouts, numerous road construction projects, and high-speed driving can be challenging. In rural areas, poor lighting, wandering camels, and roads without shoulders create hazards.  If you are in an accident without a license, any insurance may be held invalid, and you could be left with extensive bills and legal charges.

Avoid arguments over traffic incidents . Qatari citizens who feel insulted can file a police complaint that can result in your arrest and overnight detention. Drivers are liable for persons injured in a traffic accident. Local police have held U.S. citizens overnight while ascertaining the extent of injuries.

Traffic Fines:  Please be aware that traffic offenses are easily captured via well-placed cameras and the fines can be expensive. Unpaid traffic fines can result in an exit ban until reconciled.

Public Transportation:  Regulated and registered taxi services (Uber, Karwa, Fox Transportation, and Careem) are widely available and generally safe to use. The Embassy recommends you avoid use unlicensed taxi operators or drivers who approach you and attempt to solicit business. Do not allow the driver to pick up additional passengers along the way. To avoid cultural misunderstandings, females traveling alone should always sit in the back (never the front) seat.

Qatar Rail : The Doha Metro is safe, modern, and inexpensive.

Mowasalat Public Bus : Laborers and construction workers predominantly use this mode of public transportation. The front seats in the buses are generally reserved for women and children. The U.S. Embassy recommends the use of regulated taxi services rather than public buses.

See our  Road Safety page  for more information.

Aviation Safety Oversight:  The U.S. Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has assessed the government of Qatar’s Civil Aviation Authority as being in compliance with International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO) aviation safety standards for oversight of Qatar’s air carrier operations. Further information may be found on the  FAA’s safety assessment page .

Maritime Travel:  Mariners planning travel to Qatar should also check for  U.S. maritime advisories and alerts . Information may also be posted to the  U.S. Coast Guard homeport website , and the NGA broadcast warnings .

After it was briefly suspended in 2020 due to COVID-19, Qatar’s visa-on-arrival service has resumed with some conditions. As of 2024, citizens of 90+ countries are eligible for a free Qatar Visa On Arrival.

This article explains all the requirements, eligible nationalities, application procedures, and visa renewal procedures, and answers the frequently asked questions about the free visa on arrival in Qatar .

JANUARY 2024 STATUS

1. citizenship.

The visitor must be a citizen of an eligible country ( the list of countries is given below ).

2. Passport Validity

The visitor’s passport must be valid for at least six months .

3. Confirmed Return Tickets

The visitor must have a confirmed return or onward ticket.

4. Accommodation

The visitor should have a confirmed accommodation (clear address and contacts of the local host) or hotel reservation for the duration of the stay. This can be a regular hotel booking for travellers from most countries. For hotel booking, we recommend TripAdvisor as it has the largest database of hotel reviews.

However, for citizens of India, Pakistan, Iran, Thailand and Ukraine, the hotel booking for the entire duration of the stay should be through the Discover Qatar website . Staying with a Qatar resident or booking directly with a hotel is not accepted for these nationalities (to avail visa on arrival).

A minimum of 2 nights should be booked through the Discover Qatar website. Cancellations within 48 hours of arrival are subject to a 100% cancellation fee.

Please note that even if you book the hotel for a longer duration, the initial visa issued will be for 30 days only. You need to extend that by visiting any MOI Service Center or the Airport Immigration office. The online extension may not be possible for these nationalities.

This requirement is only mandatory for travellers coming on a visa on arrival and not for family visit visas .

5. Health Insurance

As per the new law launched in February 2023, health insurance is mandatory for visitors who are staying for more than 30 days . Insurance is highly recommended even for visitors staying less than 30 days, but it is not mandatory.

Visitors can buy basic health insurance for QAR 50 (for 30 days) from any registered insurance company listed on the Ministry of Public Health (MOPH) website .

6. Proof of Funds

From 10 March 2022, visitors from countries like India, Pakistan, Thailand, and Iran (using a visa-on-arrival facility) are required to have a valid international credit card or debit card . Cash of QR 5,000 will no longer be accepted (Belarus nationals can show USD 1,000 in cash).

  • For debit cardholders , a three-month bank statement is also required. There should be a minimum balance equivalent to at least QR 5,000 in your local currency.
  • The card should be under the name of the visitor . If you are travelling together as a family, one card (under the family head’s name) is enough.
  • This rule applies only to nationalities that require proof of funds (like India, Pakistan, Thailand, Iran, etc.)

The countries under this facility are divided into two categories as below:

Category 1: Visa waiver for 180 days

  • Visa waiver valid is for 180 days from the date of entry.

  • The stay is not extendable beyond 90 days.
  • Requirements are a passport (with 6 months validity), return/onward flight tickets, confirmed accommodation (local host details or hotel booking), and health insurance (if staying for 30 days).

The following are the countries included under this category:

I am flying with Bangladeshi passport via DOH and have 17 hours stay in Qatar for my connecting flight. I am a resident of UK, am I eligible for a free transit for shopping in Doha?

My son is moving to Qatar to work and his employer is providing accommodation for his initial stay and I will be travelling with him to settle him in. Do I need anything to come with him as I will staying with him for up to 2 weeks. We are from the United Kingdom

Hi there I am holding a Kosovo passport with a Swiss Perminent Residenz status and will be in transit in Doha for 2,5 hours coming from Zuerich going to Male. Do I need a transit visa for this period of time in Transit or not at all? Thank you for your answer. Claudia

Hi Claudia, You don’t need Transit Visa is you are not leaving the airport.

can visit visa holder of Qatar exit by road ??? or should be return by air only ???

Hi Shahnawaz, They can exit by road also.

I have a 5 month old, he was born outside of Qatar. I want to return to my job with him but my husband is not a resident of Qatar. What do I do?

Hi Roseline, If your profession and salary is good enough (normally you would need QR 10,000 or Qr 6,000 with family accommodation), you can sponsor your baby. But you can apply for that only after reaching Qatar and will take few weeks. If your nationality is eligible, you can try visa on arrival for baby or Hayya A1 Tourist Visa.

I have a Canadian passport and I am planning to visit Qatar via land border from Saudi Arabia and then will drive back. Will I still be able eligible for visa on arrival? I am also not a resident in Saudi but I am here on a tourist visa and will have a flight from Saudi to Canada after visiting Qatar

Hi Sasa, Usually this is allowed. However, you may double-check with the Qatar Government Helpline at +974 44069999 to ensure the policy hasn’t changed.

Please update visa requirements. You are posting old information!

Hi Jana, We regularly confirm this information with the official websites (Ministry of Interior, Qatar Airways and Qatar Tourism) and we believe they are all up-to-date. Please specify which part you think is wrong and we can check again.

Can I apply ‘on arrival visa’ 2 months before the visit.

Hi Paul, Visa On Arrival cannot be applied in advance. You can apply for Hayya Tourist Visa (A1) in advance. Here is how: https://www.dohaguides.com/how-to-apply-qatar-tourist-visa-online/

as per your guide- south africans get a 30 day visa on arrival however latelythey have been receiving a 90 day visa on arrival? could you clarify if this is a multi entry visa and will this 90 day visa on arrival be permannently applicable to south africans?

Hi Khadija, We are not sure if there is a recent change in policy. According to official Visit Qatar website , South African citizens are eligible for 30 days visa free entry (not 90 days). There is another group of countries with 90 days visa, but SA is not include in that. For clarification, please contact the Qatar Government Helpline at +974-44069999 or [email protected] .

I am an RP holder and I would like to book a hotel through Discover Qatar for my wife, daughter, and myself. However, the hotels listed on Discover Qatar only mention ‘room only for VOA (visa on arrival)’. Can I still book a hotel for three guests, including myself, even though I am an RP holder?

Hi Khan, Usually if a family is coming on visa on arrival, RP holder can add himself as a guest and stay with them. However there is a clause on DQ website that says “If anybody books these hotels who do not require them for these purposes, the hotels may charge an additional supplement at check-in.” So it is better to confirm with the hotel before booking.

GCC's unified visa to be rolled out soon: Here's what you should know

 alt=

Dubai: In a significant move to make travelling to the GCC countries simple and hassle-free, a unified visa system that allows the visa holder to stay up to 30 days in these countries, is likely to be launched by the end of this year. The GCC council has permitted to proceed with the unified visa that enables the visitor to enter the United Arab Emirates, Saudi Arabia, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar and Oman. Currently, separate visas are required to visit each country. The tourism ministers of the GCC countries hoped that the unified visa system would provide an impetus to the tourism sector of the region.

The ministerial-level seminar that was conducted as part of the Arabian Travel Market opined that creating a corridor by linking the major tourist attractions in the Gulf countries would pave the way for healthy competition and cooperation. This would then enable the GCC countries to highlight their incredible tourism potential to the world. The ministers said that the unified visa system would be a significant milestone in initiating developmental activities based on tourism. The meeting was of the opinion that a common visa would be helpful in projecting the Gulf countries as fabulous tourist destinations that are interconnected. Moreover, the GCC countries would be turned into a single tourism unit when the GCC railways too get materialised. Besides, the unified visa system could attract more investment to the airports and cruise terminals in the GCC countries.

Features of the visa The new visa will make travel in the GCC area more affordable and convenient for tourists. It will also improve and increase the activities offered to tourists. At the same time, unlike the Schengen visa, the GCC visa is meant for travellers who have a diverse business portfolio. The visa will also be beneficial to those travelling to the Gulf for Haj and Umra as well as those on short trips. In the first stage, the aim is to maximise cooperation between the GCC countries, which will facilitate the exchange of skilled labour in the second stage. The proposed rail link connecting the Gulf countries also necessitates the implementation of the unified visa regime.

New Qatar Airways credit cards now open to applicants: Fast-track to Oneworld elite status for $499

W e reported on April 17 that Qatar Airways was teaming up with card issuer Cardless to launch two new credit cards in the U.S. Interested applicants could join a waitlist to earn 5,000 to 10,000 bonus Avios, depending on which card they applied for.

Now, as of May 7, applications for both cards are officially open. (The waitlist has closed, though.)

Here are the cards' details, including how to get Oneworld Sapphire status for a year with complimentary access to American Airlines Admirals Clubs and Alaska Lounges.

$499 Visa Infinite card

Here are the details on the Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Infinite Credit Card, which comes with a $499 annual fee:

  • A welcome offer of up to 50,000 Avios — 25,000 Avios after the first transaction and an additional 25,000 Avios and 150 Qpoints after spending $5,000 in the first 90 days — which is more than 40% lower than the current welcome bonuses on Chase's three Avios-earning credit cards
  • 5 Avios per dollar spent on Qatar Airways purchases, 3 Avios per dollar spent on restaurant purchases and 1 Avios per dollar spent on all other purchases
  • 2 Qpoints for every $1,500 spent
  • One year of complimentary Qatar Airways Privilege Club Gold status (equivalent to Oneworld Sapphire), which includes benefits like priority boarding, preferred seating, lounge access and a 75% tier bonus on earning Avios with eligible flights
  • Visa Infinite benefits like concierge services, access to the Luxury Hotel Collection and rental car privileges

It's worth noting that the automatic Gold status on this card is only valid for the first year unless you already have Gold status — in this case, you'll get an additional year of membership starting from the day you're accepted for the card.

The information for the Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Infinite and Signature Cards has been collected independently by The Points Guy. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

Given that Qatar Airways is one of the world's most premium airlines, elite status with the program is nothing to sneeze at. By getting this card, you can effectively buy Gold status with the program for $499 a year, and that's before factoring in its welcome bonus and earning rates.

With the 150 Qpoints in the welcome offer, you'll also be 25% of the way to Platinum status (equivalent to Oneworld Emerald), which requires 600 Qpoints in a 12-month period to qualify. Platinum status includes all Gold status benefits, plus an additional lounge guest pass and a 100% tier bonus instead of Gold's 75% bonus.

$99 Visa Signature card

The Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature Credit Card, meanwhile, has a $99 annual fee and comes with the following:

  • A welcome offer of up to 40,000 Avios — 20,000 Avios after the first transaction and an additional 20,000 Avios after spending $3,000 in the first 90 days
  • 4 Avios per dollar spent on Qatar Airways purchases, 2 Avios per dollar spent on restaurant purchases and 1 Avios per dollar spent on all other purchases
  • 2 Qpoints for every $2,000 spent
  • Automatic Silver status with Qatar Airways Privilege Club, which offers benefits like priority boarding, lounge access and a 25% tier bonus on earning Avios with eligible flights

Bottom line

Both cards offer solid perks, so the question is whether you can justify the extra $400 in annual fees for the Qatar Airways Visa Infinite. The complimentary Gold status on the Visa Infinite version has a strong value proposition, so if you frequently fly with American Airlines, Alaska Airlines, Qatar Airways or their partners, this card might be worth picking up. The welcome bonuses are quite low compared to our top credit cards , though.

In 2022, Qatar Airways joined the Avios frequent flyer program, allowing passengers to earn the same frequent flyer miles earned by British Airways , AerLingus , Iberia Airlines and others.

Now, Qatar Airways Privilege Club members can earn Avios without flying and also snag a fast track to elite status, thanks to the release of two new credit cards, issued by Cardless , a fintech company.

The Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Infinite Credit Card.

The Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature Credit Card.

Applications for the cards go live on May 7, 2024. Here's what to expect.

How the new Qatar Airways credit cards stack up

Prospective card applicants were able to join a waitlist in mid-April. If you joined that waitlist and apply within 30 days of the card applications going live, you'll be eligible for an additional 5,000 bonus Avios on the Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature Credit Card or 10,000 bonus Avios on the Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Infinite Credit Card. These are in addition to the sign-up bonuses available to all applicants.

Elite status and benefits

The one year of automatic elite status with each card has no spending requirement. Additional Qpoints earned by spending on the card can help members qualify for status in subsequent years.

Benefits of the Gold status earned with the Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Infinite Credit Card include a 75% tier bonus on earning Avios with eligible flights; priority check-in and boarding; complimentary lounge access and four guest lounge passes every year; a free extra baggage allowance; and complimentary preferred seat selection. Gold elite members will also receive all the benefits of Oneworld Sapphire tier elite status and collect Avios while flying on Oneworld member airlines.

Benefits of the Silver status earned with the Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature Credit Card include a 25% tier bonus on earning Avios with eligible flights; priority check-in and boarding; complimentary lounge access and two guest lounge passes every year; an extra baggage allowance; and 20% savings on preferred seat selection. Silver elite members will also receive all the benefits of Oneworld Ruby tier elite status and collect Avios while flying on Oneworld member airlines.

The power of Avios

Avios points earned on these cards can be redeemed for flights with Qatar Airways, but also Oneworld Alliance airlines such as Alaska Airlines and British Airways, as well as partner airlines, including JetBlue Airways. The rewards can also be transferred to other Avios-based rewards programs, such as British Airways and Iberia Airlines. That transfer ability and access to partner airlines make Avios extremely valuable for optimizers who don’t mind learning how to maximize the value of their rewards.

Should you get a Qatar Airways card?

Chase Sapphire Preferred Credit Card

Unless you’re a frequent flyer with Qatar Airways and you really value elite status, there are easier and more flexible ways to earn Avios. For example, the Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card earns Chase Ultimate Rewards® that can be transferred to a variety of Avios-based rewards programs, including the British Airways Executive Club, Aer Lingus AerClub and Iberia Plus. These programs all give you access to the Oneworld Alliance award chart, including Qatar Airways. New cardholders can also qualify for a bigger introductory offer: Earn 75,000 bonus points after you spend $4,000 on purchases in the first 3 months from account opening. That's over $900 when you redeem through Chase Travel℠.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature Credit Card review

As one of two new cards issued in partnership with Cardless, the Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature card has an annual fee of just $99 and impressive earning potential. However, the ongoing benefits of the card are lackluster, falling short of the standard of excellence the airline is known for. Outside of a first year of Silver elite status, the card doesn’t offer many extras to cardholders to justify the price.

This could be partly due to Qatar already having so many perks integrated into their in-flight experience. For example, the credit card doesn’t need to offer a checked bag allowance as a perk when all travelers receive at least one checked bag when flying.

If you don’t earn enough of the airline’s Qpoints to maintain your Silver tier status in Qatar’s elite status program after your first year as a cardholder, you might feel like you’re not getting your annual fee’s worth.

The Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature is best for a particular traveler. You need to fly Qatar Airways or Oneworld partners regularly enough to be willing to pay an annual cardholder fee in exchange for some benefits. But if that particular traveler is you, it’s worth considering the $499-annual-fee Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Infinite instead, which comes with an extensive array of perks for the price.

  • High earning potential on Qatar Airways purchases: If your primary motivation for applying for the card is to earn Avios to use on flights, this card delivers.
  • No foreign transaction fees : As is standard on cards issued by Cardless, you don’t have to worry about incurring additional fees when making purchases abroad.
  • One year of Silver elite status: Upon being accepted for the card, you will earn one year of Silver elite status. This is the first tier of three and includes valuable benefits in the air and at the airport.
  • Low non-bonus category earning: Outside of Qatar Airways and restaurant spending, the card earns just one point per dollar, so you’ll likely want a separate card for other spending.
  • Minimal ongoing benefits: The elite status perk is valid for one year. If you don’t earn enough to renew your status, you’ll lose one of the card’s primary benefits.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature Credit Card rewards

One of the best parts of the Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature card is its bonus category earning potential. Cardholders will earn 4 Avios per $1 spent on eligible Qatar Airways purchases, 2 Avios per $1 at restaurants and 1 Avios per $1 on other spend. If you regularly fly Qatar Airways and want to maximize your earnings, this card is a great way to do it.

The airline is known for offering one of the most luxurious business class products in the sky and is well-regarded as a premier international airline. Headquartered in Doha, Qatar, the airline flies to nearly 170 destinations around the globe.

If you link your credit card to your Privilege Club account, you can collect and spend Avios at participating retail, dining, entertainment and lifestyle venues. The Avios you earn on payments with your linked credit card is in addition to the Avios you earn for using your card for payment. This is a great way to earn extra points on non-bonus category spending.

Additionally, cardholders will earn 2 Qpoints for every $2,000 spent on their card. Qpoints are the elite status metric with Qatar Airways. The exact number of Qpoints needed to earn status will depend on whether you want to renew your current tier or upgrade to the next one, as seen in the table below.

As a new cardholder, you receive one year of Silver elite status. This means you need to earn just 135 Qpoints to keep your status after your first year, rather than 150 to achieve status in the first place. If you prefer to upgrade to Gold, you’d need to earn 300 Qpoints. Note that you must earn at least 20% of your Qpoints on flights operated by Qatar Airways.

The number of Qpoints you earn on a flight will depend on your route, the fare class you choose and your current status. For example, I’m flying on a roundtrip, business class flight from Madrid to the Maldives in July 2024. I don’t currently hold elite status with Qatar, so this trip will earn 66 Qpoints. If I were a cardholder of the Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature Card, I’d be almost halfway to renewing my Silver status after this trip.

The welcome offer allows you to earn 20,000 Avios after the first transaction, an additional 20,000 Avios, plus 150 Qpoints after spending $3,000 on purchases in the first 90 days of account opening.

Using government data and other publicly available information, we estimate that a household in the U.S. that would be in the market for this card has around $29,525 in annual expenses that can be charged to a credit card. Here’s how our sample household’s rewards could break down:

The cardholder in this example earns a grand total of 37,406 Avios annually. The value of an Avios will depend on the redemption method, but you can generally expect to be able to purchase a flight with this earning.

To redeem your points, you can purchase flights on Qatar Airways or on Oneworld partners which include Alaska Airlines, American Airlines, British Airways, Cathay Pacific, Finnair, Iberia, Japan Airlines Malaysia Airlines, Qantas, Royal Air Maroc, Royal Jordanian and SriLankan Airlines. You can also redeem your Avios on partner airlines including Bangkok Airways, JetBlue, Latam Airlines, Middle East Airlines, Oman Air, RwandAir, S7 Airlines and Virgin Australia.

Avios can also be used to purchase upgrades, preferred seat selection and extra baggage. You can also use them to access the Privilege Club Collection, to book packages with Qatar Airways Holidays and to dine and shop at Qatar Duty Free.

Qatar Airways has connectivity for 12 major cities in the U.S.: New York, Los Angeles, Seattle, San Francisco, Atlanta, Boston, Chicago, Philadelphia, Miami, Houston, Dallas Fort Worth and Washington, D.C.

Let’s look at some popular routes and how many Avios it will cost to get there. A flight from Miami (MIA) to Dubai (DXB) with a layover in Doha (DOH) will cost just 45,000 Avios one-way in economy, plus $136.40 in taxes and fees.

when qatar tourist visa will open

If you love hiking, you can fly from Seattle (SEA) to Kilimanjaro (JRO) with a layover in Doha for just 85,000 Avios round-trip, plus $338.80 in taxes and fees.

With the number of routes offered by the airline and its partners, you can certainly go places with the points you earn on your card.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature Credit Card perks

One of the most notable perks of the Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature card is one year of Silver elite status. As a Silver elite member, you will receive:

  • 25% tier bonus on earning Avios with eligible flights.
  • Priority stand-by, check-in and boarding.
  • Complimentary access to lounges in airports and two guest lounge passes every year.
  • Extra baggage allowance of 1 piece or 15 kg (33 lbs) and 20% savings on preferred seat selection.
  • Savings of up to 15% when paying with Avios on shopping at Qatar Duty Free.

Qatar Airways is a member of the oneworld alliance, which means your Silver elite status gives you oneworld Ruby status and the opportunity to collect Avios when flying with oneworld airlines.

Ruby privileges include access to Business Class priority check-in, access to preferred or pre-reserved seating and priority on waitlists and when on standby.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature Credit Card drawbacks

Although the fast track to one year of Silver Elite status is a fantastic perk, it would be great to see that perk be a permanent feature of the card. Once that year ends, the card won’t have many concrete perks outside of earning Avios. Other airline cards with comparable annual fees might include annual statement credits, discounts on award redemptions, discounts on in-flight purchases or priority boarding.

How the Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature Credit Card compares to other airline cards

Qatar airways privilege club visa signature credit card vs. qatar airways privilege club visa infinite credit card * the information for the qatar airways privilege club visa infinite credit card has been collected independently by blueprint. the card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer..

The Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Infinite is the higher-end sibling of the Visa Signature card. As such, the card has many more benefits, but at a cost of $499 per year. The earning potential is higher as you can earn 5 Avios per $1 on eligible Qatar Airways spend, 3 Avios per $1 at restaurants and 1 Avios per $1 on other spend. Plus, for every $1,500 you spend on your card, you’ll earn 2 Qpoints.

The welcome offer is slightly elevated, too, allowing you to earn up to 5 Avios per $1 on eligible Qatar Airways spend, 3 Avios per $1 at restaurants and 1 Avios per $1 on other spend. The card also comes with one year of Gold elite status, which means the bonus Qpoints put you more than halfway to being able to renew your status for another year.

As a Visa Infinite card, you will have access to the Visa Infinite Concierge service, the luxury hotel collection, a primary auto rental collision damage waiver, a reimbursement via statement credit for the application fees for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry (up to $100) and more.

Between the two cards, the Visa Infinite comes out on top for both earning potential and perks but not every traveler wants to add a $499-annual-fee card to their wallet. The Signature might make sense if you’re looking for a lower cost way to accrue Avios with Qatar Airways.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature Credit Card vs. United℠ Explorer Card * The information for the United℠ Explorer Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer.

The United℠ Explorer Card * The information for the United℠ Explorer Card has been collected independently by Blueprint. The card details on this page have not been reviewed or provided by the card issuer. is the entry-level credit card for United Airlines travelers, with $0 intro annual fee for the first year, then $95. It earns 2 miles per $1 on dining including eligible delivery services, hotel stays and United purchases and 1 mile per $1 on all other purchases. Cardholders get their first checked bag free for themselves and a companion, an up to $100 statement credit for the application fee for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry and priority boarding. In addition, cardholders get two, one-time United Club passes each year and Premier upgrades on award tickets.

The Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature is the better choice based on earning alone. However, the United Explorer card has more benefits than the Qatar card and is for a U.S.-based airline, which means it will be better for domestic travel. Additionally, cardholders of this or any United credit card get access to “hidden” reward space with the airline that only cardholders or those with United Premier status have access to. The Qatar card doesn’t unlock any additional reward flight availability.

Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature Credit Card vs. Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card

The Chase Sapphire Preferred® Card is one of the best airline credit cards due to its earning potential, multiple airline transfer partners and relatively low annual fee. For just $95 per year, cardholders can earn 5 points per $1 on travel purchased through Chase Travel℠, 3 points per $1 on dining, select streaming services, and online grocery purchases (excluding Walmart, Target and wholesale clubs), 2 points per $1 on all other travel purchases and 1 point per $1 on all other purchases. Plus, cardholders can earn up to $50 in statement credits each year for hotel stays booked through Chase Travel.

The Chase Sapphire Preferred allows you to transfer your points to 11 airline partners and three hotel partners, giving you greater flexibility to redeem your points. While the Chase Sapphire Preferred might have more utility for you overall, it doesn’t offer point transfers to Qatar, so there might be room in your wallet for both cards.

Is the Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature Credit Card worth it?

The Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature card is a welcome addition to the market. Qatar Airways is known for its luxury travel experience, and with increased routes serving U.S. travelers the card is worth the annual fee for a specific type of Qatar Airways frequent flyer.

The benefits of the card aren’t substantial, so you’ll want other cards in your wallet that will give you better travel perks, like a statement credit for TSA PreCheck or Global Entry application fees , lounge access, bonus points on everyday spending and comprehensive travel protections and insurance coverage. If you already have cards that include those benefits, you can justify the annual fee by the earning potential alone.

If you do apply for the card, you’ll want to work toward earning at least 135 Qpoints so you can keep your Silver elite status, as it’s a primary benefit of the card. However, if you don’t fly Qatar Airways regularly enough to meet the threshold to earn status, you might be better off with a general travel rewards card with a transferable point currency. American Express Membership Rewards® and Citi ThankYou® points transfer to Qatar Airways at a 1:1 ratio, so you can book award flights using those points.

The Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature Credit Card is right for you if:

  • You fly Qatar Airways frequently enough to justify paying an annual fee but not enough to justify getting the Visa Infinite card.
  • You plan on taking enough flights throughout the year to earn Silver elite status.
  • Your primary motivation for applying is earning bonus points on Qatar Airways purchases.

Frequently asked questions (FAQs)

A free checked bag is not a cardholder benefit, but Qatar Airways allows at least one checked bag on every flight, regardless of fare class. Cardholders also receive one year of Silver elite status, which includes an additional checked bag allowance.

The exact value of an Avios will vary depending on the redemption method. Using the previous example of the flight from Miami to Dubai, you can pay 45,000 Avios or $477, giving you a valuation of roughly one cent per point. However, you can likely find much better valuations, especially in higher fare classes.

The number of points you will need to purchase a Qatar Airways flight will depend on several factors, like the time of year, route, availability and more. If you are curious about how much a flight will cost, you can visit the airline’s Qatar Airways My Calculator page to compare routes.

The annual fee for the Qatar Airways Privilege Club Visa Signature is $99.
