2024 Tour de France Polka Dot Jersey Contenders

With another mountainous course, the 2024 Tour will again be a playground for climbers hoping to win stages and maybe the polka dot jersey as the tour’s king of the mountains.

110th tour de france 2023 stage 2

With another mountainous course on tap for 2024, the battle to win the polka dot jersey will again be fierce. This is especially true given that the last two of the last three riders to win the competition (Jonas Vingegaard and Tadej Pogačar) have done so while on their way to winning the yellow jersey–and both are poised to renew their rivalry this year.

So here’s a rundown of this year’s polka dot jersey contenders–and some other climbers looking to win a stage or two in this year’s Tour.

The Defending Champion

Giulio ciccone (lidl-trek).

topshot cycling fra tdf2023 stage16

Ciccone won last year’s King of the Mountains competition after making a concerted effort to take and defend the polka dot jersey once the Tour hit the Alps. The Italian will be back to defend his title this year and has a good chance of doing so given the fact that his Lidl-Trek squad is starting the Tour without a rider targeting the General Classification.

And Ciccone is riding well: after dealing with a lingering saddle sore issue throughout the first part of the season, he finished third overall at the recent Critérium du Dauphiné. At the Tour de France, we suspect he’ll prioritize a stage victory over the polka dot jersey, but since most mountain stages are won after a day spent in the breakaway (these days, at least), one often comes with the other. Expect the 29-year-old to stay off the radar during the first week, then start shooting for stages once the race hits the Pyrenees at the end of the second.

The Challengers

Tadej pogačar (uae team emirates).

110th tour de france 2023 stage 17

Pogačar won the yellow and polka dot ( and white) jerseys in 2020 and 2021, and there’s a chance that the Slovenian will win both jerseys again in 2024. (At 25 years old, he no longer qualifies for the Tour’s Best Young Rider competition.) Of the two, Pogačar will certainly be prioritizing winning a third yellow jersey this year, but if he races with the tenacity he displayed at the recent Giro d’Italia–where he won six stages, the General Classification and the King of the Mountains Competition–there might be little anyone can do to stop him.

Jonas Vingegaard (Visma-Lease a Bike)

109th tour de france 2022 stage 18

In 2022, Vingegaard made sure that for the third year in a row, the rider who won the yellow jersey also won the polka dot jersey. The streak was broken by Ciccone last year, but it was close: the Dane finished third in the Tour’s KOM competition, just 16 points away from Ciccone.

His chances of winning the polka dot jersey this year will depend on his chances of winning the yellow jersey. After missing much of the spring due a horrible crash at the Tour of the Basque Country, Vingegaard’s form is a bit of a question mark. If he makes it through the first two weeks of the Tour with the yellow jersey in reach, forget the polka dot jersey. But if he’s lost too much to be a serious challenger, he could shift focus to stage wins–and perhaps the King of the Mountains competition.

Romain Bardet and Warren Barguil (dsm-firmenich PostNL)

With Bardet and Barguil, dsm-firmenich PostNL is bringing two former winners of the Tour’s King of the Mountain competition–and they’re both Frenchman, which adds a bit of mystique to their participation. Bardet–a two-time podium finisher who won the polka dot jersey in 2019–is riding his last Tour de France this summer. He recently finished sixth at the Giro d’Italia and will likely be targeting a stage win in his final Tour. Barguil–who won two mountain stages and the polka dot jersey in 2017–is hoping for a similar outcome. It will be interesting to see how the team manages their competing aspirations, but with the Dutch squad starting the race without a bonafide GC contender, each should have several opportunities to ride for himself.

Louis Meintjes (Intermarché-Wanty)

110th tour de france 2023 stage 1

A tiny climber from South Africa, Meintjes has five top-10 Tour de France stage finishes on his resume, but he’s still hunting for that elusive victory. He came closest in 2022, when he finished second to Great Britain’s Tom Pidcock on Alpe d’Huez. Fifteenth at the Dauphiné in early June, he’s coming into form for the Tour de France, where we expect him to target specific stages in search of what would be a first Tour stage victory for both the South African and his Belgian team.

Felix Gall (Decathlon AG2R La Mondiale Team)

110th tour de france 2023 stage 17

Gall finished second in last year’s King of the Mountains competition, but more importantly, he won a stage: Stage 17 over the Col de la Loze, the toughest climb in last year’s Tour. It will be interesting to see how he attacks this year’s race. He started last year’s Tour in support of Australia’s Ben O’Connor, but then became their protected GC rider after O’Connor lost time in the first week. This year, we suspect he’ll be starting the Tour with his eye on a top-5 or top-10 finish. But he rides for a French team, so don’t be surprised if the plan changes and Gall once again hunts for a stage win or the polka dot jersey, results that would mean more to the team from a publicity standpoint than a seventh-place finish overall.

Santiago Buitrago (Bahrain-Victorious)

82nd paris nice 2024 stage 4

Buitrago has won two mountain stages at the Giro d’Italia and now gets his first shot at the Tour de France. Somewhat surprisingly, given the other riders on the roster–and the fact that he’s never finished better than tenth overall in any of the five grand tours he’s started–the Colombian was identified as the team’s leader in their roster announcement video. We think the 24-year-old is better suited for mountain stage wins and a high finish in the Tour’s King of the Mountains competition. And keep an eye on his teammates, Pello Bilbao and Wout Poels, each of whom won a stage last year and could do so again this July–especially in such a mountainous Tour.

David Gaudu (Groupama-FDJ)

109th tour de france 2022 stage 5

Gaudu was the apple of France’s Tour de France eye after finishing fourth overall in 2022. But after starting last year’s race in search of the podium, he managed only ninth. After recently testing positive for Covid-19 and missing last weekend’s French national championships, we don’t see him as a GC contender this year, especially with such a tough opening weekend during which he could lose minutes to the Tour’s fresher, healthier contenders. But that means the 27-year-old will have more opportunities to go on the hunt for stage wins–and the polka for the jersey–later in the Tour. We’ll also be watching his 20-year-old teammate and compatriot, Lenny Martinez, who’s riding his first Tour de France after coming close to taking a mountain stage win in last year’s Vuelta a España.

Stephen Williams (Premier Tech)

87th tour de suisse 2024 stage 3

Cycling doesn’t give a “Comeback Rider of the Year Award,” but if Williams wins a stage at the Tour, it might need to consider creating one. The 28-year-old went from almost not finding a contract for this season to winning his first WorldTour stage race (the Tour Down Under) and one of the sport’s oldest one-day Classics (Flèche Wallonne). Now, the Briton is riding his first Tour de France, where we expect him to partner with Canada’s Derek Gee to keep Israel-Premier Tech’s Tour de France stage-winning streak alive. (The team won stages in 2022 and 2023.)

As he did at the recent Tour de Suisse–where he finished way down on the General Classification, but took second on Stage 3–we expect Williams to pick his best chances well in advance, losing time on other days and keeping himself fresh for the stages on which he knows he has the best chance to score a victory.

Other Climbers to Watch

France’s Guillaume Martin (Cofidis) is a typical French rider in that he races with lots of panache, but often goes home with nothing to show for it other than a top-10 GC finish that he earned by virtue of gaining time from a few big breakaways. (Not that there’s anything wrong with that.) We’d love to see him win a stage.

Norway’s Uno-X Mobility squad will be targeting stage wins mainly through sprints and breakaways. But if the second-year wild card team wins a mountain stage, expect it to come from Tobias Halland Johannessen , who came close to earning the team its first Tour stage last year. A former winner of the Tour de l’Avenir, the 24-year-old could one day become a GC contender, but for now, he’s content just trying to climb his way to a mountain stage victory.

Since getting hooked on pro cycling while watching Lance Armstrong win the 1993 U.S. Pro Championship in Philadelphia, longtime Bicycling contributor Whit Yost has raced on Belgian cobbles, helped build a European pro team, and piloted that team from Malaysia to Mont Ventoux as an assistant director sportif. These days, he lives with his wife and son in Pennsylvania, spending his days serving as an assistant middle school principal and his nights playing Dungeons & Dragons.

Battle Trance

Green of winter, 11/1/22 all-acoustic show.

Battle Trance is a genre-defying ensemble of four tenor saxophonists: Travis Laplante, Patrick Breiner, Matthew Nelson, and Jeremy Viner. Battle Trance push their instruments to the limit. They utilize the full sonic palette of the saxophone, shedding new light on it as an ensemble instrument.

This show will feature Battle Trance live in Audium’s specialized listening environment. The group will be performing their new release Green of Winter , working intimately with the connection between the human body and the human breath.

Battle Trance circular breathe to build continuous and hypnotic waves of sound, layer multiphonics to create intricate textures, and use blistering fast lines that seem to liquefy into each other. Unorthodox articulations and unusual fingerings are also a part of the vast sonic vocabulary that the members of Battle Trance are demanded to master.

Note: This is our first, all-acoustic show. Audium’s speaker system will not be used for this event.

False Harmonics #11.

False Harmonics #11: Battle Trance and Darius Jones / Shahzad Ismaily / Ryan Sawyer Trio

For the eleventh installment of False Harmonics , we return with an evening of new music centered around the Saxophone. This concert will feature two distinct ensembles with very differing approaches to the instrument and their respective direction, one led by Travis Laplante and the other by Darius Jones.

Battle Trance

The flurry of saxophones known as Battle Trance is a tour de force of intense focus and unending breath. Comprised of tenor saxophonists Travis Laplante, Matthew Nelson, Jeremy Viner, and Patrick Breiner, the quartet uses circular breathing and immense physical stamina to produce hypnotic, meditative, and transformative sounds. In pursuit of a music that is both modern and timeless, the group strives to create a “portal of resonance” where there is no separation between the listener and the sound.

This concert celebrates the release of their new record Green of Winter via New Amsterdam Records.

"A floating tapestry of fascinating textures made up of tiny musical motifs, and a music that throbs with tension between stillness and agitation, density and light.”

– Corinna da Fonseca-Wollheim, The New York Times

“Battle Trance is a world unto itself, built of nothing but resonance. Listen for more than a few minutes and you’ll lose track of melody, narrative, even time. It’ll connect you to a deeper part of you. In a world where representation threatens to outstrip action, that’s a useful step to take: both backward and ahead.”

–Giovanni Russonello, JazzTimes

Darius Jones / Shahzad Ismaily / Ryan Sawyer Trio

“Free improvisation can feel dogmatic, as if the musicians are at pains to embody an absolute principle, but this performance did not; the group seemed uninterested in that path. The musicians thought through everything as they went along. They kept their pieces short; they valued concision. They gravitated toward almost folklike themes and phrases, which all of them supplied. Mr. Jones played ballad tones and shrieked melodic repetitions without sentiment or aggression. Mr. Sawyer kept a steady free-rhythm simmer or played in time; Mr. Ismaily played notes and chords on one stringed instrument or another with great softness and then overdrive, with a clear amplified tone or ugly distortion or no amplification at all. Sometimes he made you feel silence, sometimes he blotted silence out.

Whatever this music was, it was careful, and absolutely moment to moment.”

–Ben Ratliff, The New York Times

Darius Jones has created a recognizable voice as a critically acclaimed saxophonist and composer by embracing individuality and innovation in the tradition of African-American music.

Shahzad Ismaily is an American musician and composer of Pakistani descent. His main instrument is the electric bass. He is active in the fields of rock and jazz , including in the New York downtown scene.

Ryan Sawyer is an American drummer and percussionist from Texas, now based in New York.

Brooklyn, NY – Roulette presents A Dance That Empties , a newly commissioned long-form composition from tenor saxophonist Travis Laplante. The evening will also feature Laplante’s saxophone quartet Battle Trance performing the album-length composition Blade of Love . Released on New Amsterdam Records/NNA Tapes in August 2016 to wide critical acclaim, Blade of Love was included on best-of-2016 lists from Rolling Stone, NPR, Stereogum, Bandcamp, and more.

A Dance That Empties creates intense rhythmic and melodic repetitive cycles as a means to slowly open the listener’s ears and heart over the course of the composition. The cyclic aspect of the piece is inspired by the sacred origin of dance and its connection of humans to the Earth. The follow-up to Battle Trance’s widely acclaimed debut Palace of Wind (2014), Blade of Love is an elemental composition that aims to fulfill the tenor saxophone’s expansive potential as an ensemble instrument. Working within the intimate intersection of the human body/breath and the saxophone, Blade of Love is a spiritual and enigmatic work with a deep emotional resonance.

Travis Laplante is a saxophonist, composer, and qigong healer living in Brooklyn and southern Vermont. In addition to his work with Battle Trance, Laplante is known for his solo saxophone work and his longstanding ensemble Little Women. He has recently performed and/or recorded with Trevor Dunn, Ches Smith, Peter Evans, So Percussion, Gerald Cleaver, Michael Formanek, Buke and Gase, Darius Jones, Matt Maneri, and Matt Mitchell, among others. His focus in recent years, under the tutelage of Laura Stelmok, has been on Taoist alchemical medicine and the cultivation of the heart.

Welcomed by KBCS. In-person only. $10-30

This genre-defying ensemble of four tenor saxophonists performs the music of Travis Laplante who is joined by Matthew Nelson , Jeremy Viner , and Patrick Breiner , all pushing their instrument to the limit—circular breathing, hypnotic waves of sound, and blistering runs to create intricate textures. With unorthodox articulations and unusual fingers, Battle Trance creates a vast sonic vocabulary and yet creates music that speaks directly to the heart.

First premiering at the 2014 Earshot Jazz Festival, this fearsome foursome transported curious listeners in the Chapel Performance Space to sonic heights on a transcendent, visceral journey. This year, following another celebrated Earshot appearance in 2017, they return to hallowed ground in support of their latest release, Green of Winter , which, after rehearsing for 20 days, was recorded in one day in a Vermont barn.

Following the formula of their acclaimed 2014 debut Palace of Wind and sophomore album Blade of Love , Winter again features three movements that explore the intimate, spiritual connection between breath and the human body, informed by Laplante’s practice of qigong. Opening with “a wind-powered, tour-de-force” ( NPR ), Green of Winter is filled with dichotomic textures, at once propulsive yet meditative, celestial yet primal, each phrase uniquely contemplative, exploratory, and transportive.

“From its eeriest passages to its deepest harmonies, Green of Winter captures the listener no matter their inclination” ( Pop Matters ). Battle Trance is a not-to-miss at the 2022 Earshot Jazz Festival.

The Warhol welcomes the genre-defying saxophone quartet Battle Trance (comprised of Travis Laplante, Matthew Nelson, Jeremy Viner, Patrick Breiner) on a tour supporting their debut release, Palace of Wind , on New Amsterdam Records. Performing primarily the music of member Travis Laplante, the quartet crosses boundaries and exists loosely within realms of contemporary classical music, avant-garde jazz, black metal, ambient, and world music, the new record challenges conventions of the saxophone as an ensemble instrument. The sonic vocabulary of the quartet has developed through techniques such as circular breathing, allowing them to build continuous, hypnotic waves of sound and intricate textures.

“[Laplante’s music] might change your life, indefinably.”

Description

Come out and enjoy a night on the Englert! We are presenting a FREE community concert on our stage featuring experimental tenor saxophone quartet Battle Trance live on Tuesday, October 11th at 7 p.m.

About Battle Trance: Tenor saxophone quartet Battle Trance is proud to announce their sophomore album Blade of Love. The follow-up to their widely acclaimed debut Palace of Wind (2014), Blade of Love is an elemental composition that aims to fulfill the tenor saxophone’s expansive potential as an ensemble instrument. Working within the intimate intersection of the human body/breath and the saxophone, Blade of Love is a spiritual and enigmatic work with a deep emotional resonance.Since forming in 2012, the four saxophonists in Battle Trance (Travis Laplante, Patrick Breiner, Matt Nelson, Jeremy Viner) have spent hundreds of hours deepening their musical connection with each other, maturing as an ensemble through relentless touring everywhere from Brooklyn to Los Angeles, Montreal to Vancouver, and most places in between.

The three movements of Blade of Love were composed by Battle Trance leader Travis Laplante in a wooden room with soaring ceilings in the Vermont forest. Blade of Love was recorded after two years of rigorous rehearsals working to perfect the array of extended techniques, both virtuosic and primal, required to bring the challenging piece to life.

Blade of Love’s central focus is on the physical and spiritual intersection of the saxophone and the human body. The saxophone is one of the few instruments that literally enters the body of the person playing it, and Blade of Love is a medium for this sacred meeting place, with each member of Battle Trance using the saxophone as a vessel for the human spirit.

Singing has an inherent power, but that power is heightened in the context of Blade of Love. At times, the four players sing while exhaling through the saxophone tubes, using the instrument’s keys to shift the timbre of their voices. Laplante also integrates non-traditional mouth articulations, using the saxophone as a resonant chamber for these inventive sounds. Laplante explains:

“There were certain specific sounds that I imagined being in Blade of Love, but I couldn’t get close enough to them using traditional saxophone tone — sounds like arrows flying through the air, birds singing or flying overhead, bombs, water running, the wind, the sound of fire, singing in church, making love, killing, waves crashing, fighting for your life, thunder, the sound of rage, howling, crying, laughing, the sound of my last breath… So I began working on different ways for the saxophone to get closer to these sounds, and the resulting techniques became part of the fabric of Blade of Love.”

Travis Laplante describes composing Blade of Love as “the most torturous and demanding compositional experience of my life.” He continues: “It’s painful for me to try to explain what this music ‘means,’ because in a sense it has no meaning — and at the same time, it means everything. I just hope Blade of Love will release something in both the listener and the performer’s hearts. It doesn’t ask for anything in return.”

Battle Trance.

Any musician can tell you that there is a profound connection between the breath and making music. There's the physical action, of course — one makes the other possible — but there are also the metaphysical bonds between breathing and creating. This connection has been acknowledged and honored since time immemorial: Think of the Latin word spiritus , for example, which means, quite literally, both "breath" and "spirit." Or, to turn to another tradition: One of the great, ancient Hindu sacred texts, the Mandukya Upanishad , teaches that the syllable "om" represents, in its four distinct elements (a-u-m-silence), the entire universe. "A" is the initial act of creation; "u," sound resonating and coming into consciousness; "m," sound turning inward as the lips close and the body hums with vibration; and, finally, there comes silence, which is just as integral as sound.

Apart from singers, perhaps no musicians feel that interdependence between breath, music and creation as keenly as wind and brass players. The unusual quartet Battle Trance — comprising four wildly talented tenor saxophonists in leader Travis Laplante, Patrick Breiner, Matt Nelson and Jeremy Viner — makes that meeting place the heart of its new album, Blade Of Love , which the group calls an exploration of "the physical and spiritual intersection of the saxophone and the human body." The album is a recording of Laplante's three-part composition of the same name; here, we hear the work's first section, "Blade Of Love I," which references very old music and plunges deeply into very new sounds.

As visceral and inventive as Laplante's writing can be, and as rigorously as he puts his quartet through its paces using extended technique, he also leads his players — and listeners — through a study of sonic contrasts. The piece opens with a sustained, nearly two-minute blast of sound that fairly shakes the listener out of complacency; from there, the musicians shift away from their instruments into cooed chanting that is not unlike medieval polyphony, then retreat into overlapping textures of voice and reeds that call to mind the collaborations between Norwegian saxophonist Jan Garbarek and the British vocal quartet the Hilliard Ensemble.

And yet, Laplante brings Battle Trance somewhere apart from those dreamscapes: on the whole, somewhere more emotionally forceful, less ethereal and far blunter, even when the composer draws his players into tender quietude before casting them into lapping circles of ostinatos and fiendishly difficult flurries of notes. This is a fierce piece, and one that demands attention.

Blade Of Love comes out Aug. 26 on NNA and New Amsterdam .

Favorites youth classification Tour de France 2024 | Finally free of Pogacar, these are the men who will battle for the white jersey!

O n September 21, 1998, a small boy named Tadej was born in Slovenia. A prodigy who, nineteen years later, would astonish cycling fans with his incredible abilities on a bike. During his first years, he dominated the young rider classification in all the races he entered, as he was always among the best in the general classification. Until 2024. Tadej Pogacar turns 26 in September and he is finally too old for the white jersey. This means that – just like in the Giro d'Italia – we will finally get a real battle for the young rider classification for the first time in years!

Since Pogacar's debut in 2019, the fight for the white jersey was only interesting in grand tours where the Slovenian was not participating. In the 2019 Vuelta a España and the Tour de France editions from 2020 to 2023, the white jersey automatically went to him, simply because he ended up on the podium in all the grand tours he entered. In the Giro d'Italia this past May, Pogacar was already too old, and we saw a young rider classification with riders who genuinely competed for it. Antonio Tiberi emerged as the best. Who will it be in the Tour?

The concept of the young rider classification is quite simple: any rider born in 1999 or later is eligible, and the one who finishes highest in the general classification will stand on the podium in Nice wearing the white jersey. This rider will, after four consecutive decisions with Pogacar at the top, dethrone the Slovenian to join the ranks of riders like Egan Bernal, Simon and Adam Yates and Nairo Quintana!

Favorites youth classification Tour de France 2024

To create this list, current and former editors of IDLProCycling.com were asked for their top ten answers to the question: "Who is most likely to win the young rider jersey in the Tour de France?" Points were assigned to each top ten as follows: 12 points for the first place, 10 for second, and so on down to 1 point. The total points for each rider were converted into a percentage of the maximum possible points and are indicated next to each rider. This gives a clearer picture of the perceived chances for each rider, according to IDLProCycling.com .

Romain Grégoire- Groupama-FDJ: 5/72 (6.9%)

Listing ten established general classification contenders for the white jersey is unprecedented. In such a classification, it's always a bit of a gamble on young talents who might exceed expectations. Consider Romain Grégoire, who, in just his second year as a pro with Groupama-FDJ, is already making it to the Tour de France. The 21-year-old Frenchman is very explosive, a fantastic climber, but has so far excelled more in one-day races and breakaways than in overall standings.

Normally, he will fulfill that role in the Tour, having already secured a notable stage victory in the Tour of the Basque Country. Grégoire may stand close in the young rider classification in the first week, but can he maintain it over three weeks? His friend, teammate, and peer Lenny Martinez seems more suited for that. But more on him later...

Tobias Halland Johannessen - Uno-X Mobility: 14/72 (19.4%)

Tobias Halland Johannessen can perhaps be placed in the same category as Grégoire, although there might be even more potential in the 24-year-old Norwegian ridinig for Uno-X. After winning the highly regarded U23 Tour de l'Avenir in 2021, he joined the senior ranks. He immediately proved to be an excellent general classification rider in second-tier stage races and, after overcoming injury issues, made his Tour debut in 2023, where he was very active as an attacker.

This year, he may be present in a similar role, but in peak form, Johannessen could easily achieve a solid top ten. He hasn't done it at such a high level yet, but there's a first time for everything... If he's lucky enough to have his peers not deliver, the white jersey could be within reach.

Oier Lazkano - Movistar Team: 15/72 (20.8%)

Another typical attacker and actually a classics specialist. What is he doing on this list? Well, Oier Lazkano is still discovering himself, and after achieving excellent results in one-day races, he suddenly found himself among established general classification riders in the top ten this year. The outgoing Spanish champion won the Clásica Jaén and finished third in Kuurne, but surprised everyone with a ninth place in the Critérium du Dauphiné.

In the final mountain stages, Lazkano finished among the best, though still at a respectable distance from the stage winners. However, this speaks volumes about the engine within the 1.89-meter tall rider. Movistar is focusing on Enric Mas in the Tour, but don't be surprised if Lazkano stays close to the top ten with some impressive attacks...

Lenny Martinez - Groupama-FDJ: 17/72 (23.6%)

Here we have Lenny, the wonderkid of Groupama-FDJ mentioned alongside Grégoire. Likely moving to Bahrain Victorious in 2025, but not before making a surprising Tour debut for the team that developed him. Martinez is, like Grégoire, on his second WorldTour season, and while his peer made a mark in punchy finishes, Martinez has been climbing with the best in stage races and one-day hill races for two seasons.

20-year-old Martinez already has an impressive resume. After winning CIC - Mont Ventoux last season, he has already secured five victories this season, all in tough climbing races. His results in stage races might be even more impressive. He finished second behind Jonas Vingegaard in O Gran Camiño, seventh in Catalonia, and eighth in Romandy. Although he underperformed in the Tour of Switerland after a high-altitude training camp, he showed signs of improvement in the final mountain time trial (sixth), and is likely to shine in the Tour. Bring it on, Martinez!

Tom Pidcock - INEOS Grenadiers: 34/72 (47.2%)

The percentages are now rising sharply, which is no surprise. We are now entering that group of riders who have a realistic chance of winning the white jersey, starting with Tom Pidcock. The 24-year-young all-rounder is competing in this classification for the last time, and don't be surprised if he takes home the jersey to match in Nice. Pidcock is a unique athlete who continues to combine cyclo-cross, mountain biking and road racing, but also delivers in all disciplines.

In the winter, he expressed his ambition to aim for the top five in the Tour de France. Makes sense, after flirting with the top ten in 2022 and 2023. That one bad day needs to be avoided, and his climbing needs improvement, but Pidcock is a serious threat to other general classification riders. Winning a mountain bike race a week before the Tour should help him in the opening weekend. His training at altitude and in the Tour of Switzerland should provide the stamina to compete in the third week.

Santiago Buitrago - Bahrain Victorious: 36/72 (50.0%)

Bahrain Victorious is making remarkable choices this season, and we cannot say they are bad ones. They overlooked a veteran like Wout Poels for the Giro d'Italia, placing all hope on rookie Antonio Tiberi, who immediately delivered with a fifth place and the young rider jersey. The team has a similar plan for the Tour, with Santiago Buitrago as the 24-year-old newcomer among the big names.

The Colombian has earned his stripes in the peloton, more so than Tiberi, so Bahrain Victorious' confidence in the climber is not unfounded. His performances in stage races have not been spectacular this year, although he was in good form early in 2024, bringing in a second place in the Tour of Valencia. Lots of high-altitude training should see him start the Tour in peak form, where he will not be targeting stage wins as in the Giro d'Italia of 2022 and 2023, but will focus on the overall classification. The white jersey was already mentioned as a goal during the team presentation.

Matteo Jorgenson - Visma | Lease a Bike: 37/72 (51.4%)

When you start smashing results after a transfer to Visma | Lease a Bike, winning Paris-Nice and finishing second in the Dauphiné, you're more than just a domestique for Vingegaard in the Tour. In his new team, Matteo Jorgenson found the guidance that his potential deserved, unlike at Movistar. High-altitude training, major stage races, and now he is a shadow leader for the Tour.

In theory, all eyes are on Vingegaard, but how good is the Dane? That is a question nobody can answer as of yet. The only thing we know for sure is that Jorgenson has kept up with the best in both one-day races and stage races this season, and his team says he has improved even more during his latest high-altitude training. Even if Vingegaard performs well, Jorgenson could still aim for a strong overall classification. The white jersey, which he already won in Paris-Nice and the Dauphiné, could be within grasp.

Juan Ayuso - UAE-Team Emirates: 53/72 (73.6%)

Matteo Jorgenson, but the UAE-Team Emirates version. Not an explicit leader in the Tour, because that role of course goes to Pogacar. But expectations for Juan Ayuso are high for his debut. He is on his third WorldTour season, and has impressed in every race he has entered. Third in his debut Vuelta a España in 2022, fourth behind the invincible Jumbo-Visma podium in the Vuelta of 2023, overall winner in the Tour of the Basque Country this year, and ‘best of the rest’ behind Vingegaard in the Tirreno.

Ayuso is supporting Pogacar, but to what extent will UAE riders have to sacrifice their own ambitions for the Slovenian’s yellow jersey ambitions? With Adam Yates, João Almeida, Pavel Sivakov and Marc Soler also onboard, there is no shortage of climbing power. And Visma | Lease a Bike proved in the Vuelta of 2023 that you can place three riders on the podium if you are simply better than the rest. Ayuso won’t want to lose time, so he might surprise by delivering the white jersey and a strong overall result in his first Tour de France.

Carlos Rodriguez - INEOS Grenadiers: 60/72 (83.3%)

Spain is well-stocked with stage race talent these years. Besides Ayuso, Carlos Rodriguez has been impressing in the WorldTour for the last 3.5 years. The 23-year-old rider of INEOS Grenadiers finished fifth in his first Tour last year. And to think he was on track for a podium spot until he had a hard crash in the final week. The same happened in the 2022 Vuelta a España, where he finished seventh, but without the crash, he might have matched Ayuso's performance.

INEOS is aiming for a strong overall result with Rodriguez, despite Pidcock and Egan Bernal having the same ambition. That shouldn’t be a problem, because when Pogacar and Vingegaard go, the legs will determine who can follow. His preparation seems perfect once again. Rodriguez finished second in the Basque Country and closed the Dauphiné with a stage win and fourth place overall. "Better than ever," he said himself. Which makes him an immediate top favorite for white.

Remco Evenepoel - Soudal-Quick Step: 66/72 (91.7%)

One major disadvantage for Rodriguez: there is a competitor at Soudal-Quick Step who potentially could be even better. Remco Evenepoel is finally riding the Tour de France, something Belgium has been eagerly waiting for for years. Evenepoel took it easy since his debut in 2019. Despite his well-known top results in monuments, world championships and week-long stage races, he only participated in his first grand tour in 2021 (partly due to a severe fall in Lombardy in 2022). At the time, the Giro d’Italia was a challenge without having that race rhythm in the legs.

In 2022, everything was focused on the Vuelta a España, which turned out to be a great success. Evenepoel won the overall classification and also took the rainbow jersey in Australia. The Tour in 2023 then? No, he first had to make amends in the Giro. He fought hard for the pink jersey, but COVID-19 interfered. In the Vuelta a España, one off day led to a different race tactic. Evenepoel won a total of three stages and the mountain jersey. So he was ready for the Tour. After his crash in the Basque Country (and the broken shoulder blade that resulted from the crash), the Dauphiné was not great, but Evenepoel seems ready for the battle for the podium.

2024 Tour De France Cyclists

2024 Tour de France Preview: Key Contenders & Stages to Watch

From seasoned champions to rising stars, the 2024 Tour de France race will test every rider. You won't want to miss these key stages, intense GC battles, and emerging subplots

The Tour de France is back, and the 2024 edition promises to deliver some of the most thrilling and dramatic racing of the year. With a comprehensive and challenging route, the race will test champions looking to defend their titles and new contenders eager to make their mark. Experienced riders aim to break decades-old records, while young talent seeks their first wins on cycling’s biggest stage . Here’s what you need to know for this year’s race.

The GC Battle

The Tour de France always hinges on how well competitors prepare, but this year brings even more complications than usual. Crashes have defined the 2024 cycling season, reminiscent of the chaotic 2020 season. Key contenders Jonas Vingegaard , Primož Roglič , and Remco Evenepoel were all derailed by a crash in April’s Tour of the Basque Country, leaving only Tadej Pogačar with an unblemished preparation.

Pogačar is the man to watch. Unlike his rivals, Pogačar’s year has gone exactly to plan. However, this year he has also won the Giro d’Italia, adding more miles to his legs. The big question is whether his form will hold against rivals with less fatigue and more training time. Pogačar’s challenge for the overall victory will be tougher than ever.

The Race Within the Race

Beyond the General Classification (GC) battle, the Tour de France is rich with subplots and secondary competitions. The 2024 route offers a balanced mix, ensuring opportunities for sprinters, climbers, and breakaway specialists alike.

Sprinting Showdown

Last year’s top sprinter, Jasper Philipsen , faces stiff competition if he hopes to dominate again. Dylan Groenewegen , Fabio Jakobsen , and the legendary Mark Cavendish —looking to break Eddy Merckx’s record of 34 stage wins—are all serious contenders. Additionally, versatile sprinters like Mads Pedersen , Biniam Girmay , Arnaud De Lie , and Wout Van Aert will aim to shine not only on flat stages but also from breakaways and reduced group sprints.

Breakaway Specialists

American riders Matteo Jorgenson and Neilson Powless may find themselves on team duty, reducing their breakaway chances. However, keep an eye on newcomers like Sean Quinn , Ben Healy , Derek Gee , and Kévin Vauquelin . All are riding their first Tour de France and have already proven they can win races. The stage wins promise excitement when the GC battle is momentarily paused.

Stages to Watch

For those who want to catch the most thrilling parts of the Tour, here are the must-watch stages:

Stage 2: Cesenatico to Bologna

While Stage 1 will surely bring its own excitement, Stage 2 will most likely deliver a more dynamic race. Starting in Italy, this stage features two laps of the San Luca climb, known in the Giro d’Italia and the Giro dell’Emilia cycling racing. Expect attacks on both ascents as GC favorites and stage hunters test their competitors.

San Luca’s famous crowds are sure to take to the roads around Bologna, and riders will have the added adrenaline from the fans to add to the early-Tour nerves. The stage win may come from a small group sprint if no rider can distance themselves on the climb.

Stage 9: Gravel Roads Around Troyes

Put anything other than pristine pavement into the world’s biggest bike race, and there is sure to be some discussion. This year, Stage 9 will see riders face gravel farm roads around Troyes. The roads will be similar to those seen in Paris-Tours and Tro-Bro-Leon. In these races, it has often been the cobbled specialists who take the win.

While not exactly cobblestones, gravel will still make the GC riders nervous. The stage has 13 gravel sectors, with the majority coming in the back half of the race. Any stage in which GC contenders and breakaway hopefuls have competing interests is sure to cause chaos. Add the limited line choice that farm roads can bring, and you’ll find bike racing at its most dynamic. Mechanicals could be disastrous, and good legs could be the difference between staying in the race and being cast out before the first rest day.

Stage 14: The Pyrenees Challenge

Up until this point, riders can compensate for weak legs with strong teammates and determination. With climbs over the Tourmalet, Hourquette d’Ancizan, and a summit finish on Pla d’Adet, Stage 14 is a decisive mountain stage. Time gaps will open here, and any GC hopeful must show their strength. A repeat of Julian Alaphilippe’s 2019 heroics could unfold if a non-GC rider holds the yellow jersey.

Stage 21: Monaco to Nice Time Trial

In the Tour de France, we’ll always have Paris. Well, not this year. With the French capital holding the Olympics, the Tour de France has opted to forgo the traditional laps around the Champs-Elysees. Instead, the 2024 Tour will conclude with an individual time trial from Monaco to Nice. Riders will face La Turbie and Col d’Eze before a fast descent into Nice.

Many riders in the professional peloton call Monaco and Nice home and will have ridden these roads dozens of times. If the battle for the yellow jersey is still up for grabs at this point, expect riders to turn themselves inside out on the short climbs before taking any risk necessary on the technical descent.

This stage could determine the final GC standings, making for a nail-biting finish.

The 2024 Tour de France is set to deliver three weeks of dramatic racing, with battles for the yellow jersey and stage wins. Make sure to follow every twist and turn of this iconic race.

Rocket Mortgage Classic saves a locker for late PGA Tour golfer Grayson Murray

battle trance tour

Detroit — There are 156 players in the Rocket Mortgage Classic field this week at Detroit Golf Club.

And there is one notable absence.

Grayson Murray played in three of the previous five Rockets, in 2020, 2021 and 2022. He was a winner on the PGA Tour earlier this season, and amid a long battle with mental-health issues and alcoholism, he withdrew after the opening round of the Charles Schwab Challenge in May in Texas.

He died by suicide hours later at his home in Florida. Murray was 30.

The Rocket Mortgage Classic is paying tribute to Murray this week, preserving a locker for him in the Detroit Golf Clubhouse. The name plate has his name. Under that, it reads:

"Be kind to one another."

A photo of the locker was posted to the Rocket's X (formerly Twitter) account Wednesday night, with a heart emoji.

Murray won the Sony Open in Hawaii in January. After the win, he opened up about his personal struggles. After he died, players at the Charles Schwab Challenge wore red-and-black ribbons in his honor. Murray liked those colors because of his hometown Carolina Hurricanes.

Red and black are the primary colors of the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

"We would like to thank the PGA Tour and the entire world of golf for the outpouring of support," Murray's parents, Eric and Terry Murray, said in a statement after he died. "Life wasn't always easy for Grayson, and although he took his own life, we know he rests peacefully now."

Murray turned professional in 2015 and played on the PGA Tour and Korn Ferry Tour throughout the years. His first win on the PGA Tour came at the Barbasol Championship in 2017. He won three times on the Korn Ferry Tour. He missed the cut in his three appearances at the Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Murray also had an acclaimed junior and amateur career. He competed in the U.S. Junior Amateur at Egypt Valley Country Club outside Grand Rapids, and made it to match play, where he lost to current PGA Tour player Denny McCarthy, 1-up, in the first round.

The Puerto Rican star’s short Instagram caption did not disclose details of his diagnosis. Variety has reached out to representatives of Don Omar for further comment.

Don Omar was one of the first major artists to globalize reggaeton with back-to-back hits that came with the release of his first studio album, “The Last Don,” in 2003. The latter included revolutionizing and defining singles including “Dile” and “Dale Don Dale.” Among his other recognizable hit songs are “Danza Kudro,” “Pobre Diabla” and “Salió El Sol.”

He has been performing these and many more songs on his “Back to Reggatón Tour,” which announced a second leg starting Aug. 7 in Oakland, Calif. at the Oakland Arena. It will stop in new cities including San Diego, Portland and Tampa, among others. It will close on the East Coast on Sept. 14 in Newark’s Prudential Center, and on Sept. 15 in Elmont, NY at the UBS Arena.

The trek is his first since partnering with Daddy Yankee on the Kingdom Tour back in 2015, and is in support of his 2023 album “Forever King,” which featured Chencho Corleone, Maluma, Residente and more.

Local news | ford model t club explores history through chesapeake civil war tour.

Chesapeake’s plethora of backroads, bordered by fields of corn and soy beans, offered a friendly environment for the Ford Model T Civil War Tour in Chesapeake. (Photo by Bob Ruegsegger/freelance)

Rob Sallada of the Albemarle Area Chapter of the Ford Model T Club International teamed up with Robert Hitchings of the Norfolk County Historical Society of Chesapeake to organize a 55-mile Civil War tour through Chesapeake following backroads to historic landmarks. Stops along the way included Beechwood, Superintendent’s House, Happer House and the Jackson Greys monument.

Along Shillelagh Road, Lake Drummond Causeway, Belle Haven Street and Ballahack Road, residents waved from their front yards and driveways as the antique eight-vehicle caravan of seven Model T’s and a Model A sedan delivery drove past their rural homes.

While the city of Chesapeake, formerly old Norfolk County, is crisscrossed with highways, the backroads, although paved, in the southern reaches of the municipality near the North Carolina-Virginia border have remained representative of the dirt roads and wagon trails of yesteryear.

Rob Sallada and Robert Hitchings prepare for the Model T Civil War Tour of Chesapeake. Stops along the way included Beechwood, Superintendent's House, Happer House and the Jackson Greys monument.

“The Model T Civil War Tour was really a coming together of two things,” said Sallada, a resident of Deep Creek. “Model T tours are a lot of fun wherever you go and whatever your highlight is. The Civil War part came from just talking with Mr. Hitchings. He was a referral from a Model A club member who had participated in one of Mr. Hitchings’ tours 10 or 15 years ago — long before I was involved in the program.”

Powered by a 177-cubic-inch, four-cylinder inline engine that produced 20 horsepower and a top speed of 45 mph, the Model T is most comfortable at slower speeds that would tend to impede traffic on well-traveled thoroughfares.

“I went about 42 mph in a Model T once, and that was like being at Busch Gardens,” Sallada said. “That was a little fast. Their sweet spot is 25 to 35 mph. That’s about right.” During the Civil War, many public buildings and churches around the area were put into service as hospitals, barracks and stables. The toll house on the highway, now Route 17, that ran parallel to the Dismal Swamp Canal served as a checkpoint for examining the credentials and identification of local citizens.

For Robert Hitchings, president of the Norfolk County Historical Society of Chesapeake and archivist at the Wallace History Room at Chesapeake Central Library, offering comments on local history is nothing new.

But riding in a Ford Model T was a new experience for the historian.

“All in all, this was an eventful day in my life,” Hitchings said. “Frankly speaking, the ride was quite different than I really expected. There was lots of noise, pulling on the choke and gear shifting. It was quite a feat learning how to drive in those days. We have come a long way in automobiles. I can appreciate my modern Subaru automatic.”

Action Report: Tom Kim, Akshay Bhatia popular picks ahead of Rocket Mortgage Classic

Golfbet News

Change Text Size

Tom Kim may have fallen just short in his battle with world No. 1 Scottie Scheffler at the Travelers Championship, but it hasn’t stopped bettors from reloading on the pre-tournament favorite at this week’s Rocket Mortgage Classic.

Kim went head-to-head with Scheffler on the back nine, ultimately falling short on the first playoff hole, on the way to posting a second top-five finish in his last four starts.

With no Scheffler this week, Kim has the best odds in the field (+1200) and is pulling in the most handle (13.7%) on the most tickets (13.8%).

This is Kim’s ninth straight week playing a PGA TOUR event and the Korean has a seventh-place finish at Detroit Golf Club in 2022 to fall back on.

Another player generating heavy interest is Akshay Bhatia, who also had a solid week at the Travelers Championship, finishing T5.

Bhatia (+2000, down from +2200) is drawing the second-highest handle (12.1%) on the second-most tickets (9.9%).

He missed the cut in his only start at Detroit Golf Club last year but has been playing solid golf lately. He has three straight top-25 finishes, including a T16 at the U.S. Open.

Bhatia, Kim and Cameron Young (+1400) are BetMGM’s biggest liabilities this week in golf betting .

Current handle and tickets

1. Tom Kim – 13.7% 2. Akshay Bhatia – 12.1% 3. Cameron Young – 9.3% 4. Min Woo Lee – 8.8% 5. Taylor Pendrith – 7.6%

1. Tom Kim – 13.8% 2. Akshay Bhatia – 9.9% 3. Cameron Young – 9.3% 4. Rickie Fowler – 5.6% 5. Min Woo Lee – 5.6%

Young is drawing attention following his 59 last Saturday in the third round of the Travelers Championship. Ultimately, he finished T9. He also has had some success at this event, finishing T2 in his only start back in 2022.

Rickie Fowler (+4000) is the defending champion. It hasn’t been his best season thus far, but he’s coming off a T20 last week.
