Last updated : 08-09-2023

Here I present PDFs comprising the complete four volume 2012 revised edition of The Journey to the West ( Xiyouji ,  西遊記 )   translated by Anthony C. Yu (October 6, 1938 – May 12, 2015). This is considered THE most accurate translation of the tale available. I hope those who read and enjoy the digital version will support the official release.

Yu was Carl Darling Buck Distinguished Service Professor Emeritus in the Humanities and Professor Emeritus of Religion and Literature in the  Chicago Divinity School . I shared a long email correspondence with Prof. Yu, during which we became friends. He was always quick to answer my many questions. His translation remains a treasure trove of explanatory notes and sources.

1. Book blurb

Anthony C. Yu’s translation of  The Journey to the West , initially published in 1983, introduced English-speaking audiences to the classic Chinese novel in its entirety for the first time […] With over a hundred chapters written in both prose and poetry,  The Journey to the West  has always been a complicated and difficult text to render in English while preserving the lyricism of its language and the content of its plot. But Yu has successfully taken on the task, and in this new edition he has made his translations even more accurate and accessible. The explanatory notes are updated and augmented, and Yu has added new material to his introduction, based on his original research as well as on the newest literary criticism and scholarship on Chinese religious traditions. He has also modernized the transliterations included in each volume, using the now-standard Hanyu Pinyin romanization system. Perhaps most important, Yu has made changes to the translation itself in order to make it as precise as possible ( source ).

thanks for posting these! any chance you can post epubs as well?

Much appreciated for sharing these.

Volumes 1 and 4 have all the poems cut off on the right margin… sadness… Is there any chance you might post these again without this error?

My copy has the same thing. However, the letters are still there, just not visible. If you copy the poems and paste them into Word or an email, you can see them. I’m not sure why they are cut off like that.

What I’ve heard is that it’s because a pdf leaves certain margins in the document that aren’t always present in the original document, usually for printing convenience. Google tells me you can fix it by setting a custom page size like mentioned here: https://answers.microsoft.com/en-us/msoffice/forum/all/text-cuts-off-left-and-right-when-i-print-or-save/52b64dc4-2c99-4e7b-94d8-e61c426b2a62 , though I don’t know if that’s exactly the problem you’re having, or if you can do that with an epub. If you have the time, you could test it out. I would, but word isn’t properly converting the pdf to an editable format for me.

I have updated the PDFs.

Thank you sooo much! They are really helpful!

Hello there! I’d be interested to know if you have any information on the Chinese illustrated “comics” from the 60s/70s? I believe they had English translations as well. I grew up with them and now have idea how to track them down.

Note: I wonder if the covers of the Yu editions may be from those comics?

Are you talking about manhua or the smaller lianhuanhua comics? I know there have been many.

The covers from Yu’s edition are illustrations from a Qing-era edition of the novel.

Hi! I read the beginning of Chapter 2 in Volume One in which Monkey dances with excitement at least a few times. That leads me to wonder: does he have autism, is it just a monkey thing, or is it something that represents his childlike state of mind before he eventually grows out of it? What are your thoughts?

I think Sun was just excited by what he heard. Remember that his species is known as the “Stone Monkey of Numinous Wisdom” (Lingming shihou, 靈明石猴). The term “numinous wisdom” (lingming, 靈明) refers to religious or spiritual knowledge. This allows him to understand the deep spiritual subjects that Subodhi teaches.

BRUSSELS (AP) — The European Union agreed Friday to start membership negotiations with embattled Ukraine and Moldova, another step in the nations’ long journey to move closer to the West and mute Russia’s influence.

Belgium, which currently holds the presidency of the EU, said member states have agreed that talks will start June 25 in Luxembourg.

Ukraine applied to join the the bloc less than a week after Russia invaded in February 2022, and EU leaders acted with uncharacteristic speed in making it a candidate in June of that year. But the process has moved more slowly since them — and membership, if it comes, will take years, or even decades.

Still, the opening of talks sends another strong signal of solidarity with Ukraine on top of the huge financial support provided by the EU.

Leaders from the 27-nation bloc agreed last year that accession negotiations should start with both Ukraine and Moldova. That was a necessary political agreement, and Friday’s move lays the legal basis for the talks

To join the EU, candidate countries must go through a lengthy process to align their laws and standards with those of the bloc and meet a host of economic and political conditions, including a commitment to the rule of law and other democratic principles. Ukraine, for instance, will have to curb entrenched government corruption and adopt other reforms.

Ukraine is one of several countries that have long wanted to join the EU, seeing it as a path to wealth and stability. While the EU is not a military alliance like NATO, membership in the bloc is also seen by some as offering protection against Russian influence.

Moldova has nervously eyed the invasion of its neighbor by Russia. It has repeatedly accused Russia of conducting a “hybrid war” against the country, including alleging Moscow meddled in local elections and is running vast disinformation campaigns to try to topple the government and derail its path to joining the EU.

Russia has denied the accusations, but the Moldovan government remains wary of Moscow’s intentions.

“Today, I signed the decree on initiating Moldova’s EU accession negotiations,” said Maia Sandu, the president of Moldova. “Becoming an EU member is our path to peace, prosperity, and a better life for all citizens.”

Black Myth: Wukong is easily among the best and best-looking action RPGs I've played in years, and after 2 hours hands-on I see why the devs don't call it a Soulslike

Hands-on preview | Black Myth: Wukong impresses with sharp combat and a wondrous world

Black Myth Wukong

Black Myth: Wukong developer Game Science just calls this game an action RPG. It specifically doesn't call it a Soulslike, and I kind of see what it means. This is a game where you fight plentiful bosses, dodge a lot while budgeting stamina, and rest at bonfire-esque checkpoints to refill your upgradeable healing flask. But is that all that defines a Soulslike? I would say no, partly because a lot of game developers have told me as much . And this is also a game with skill trees, color-coded gear rarities, one main weapon, and more linear level design, which all clash with the Souls bible ( FromSoftware 's black sheep Sekiro notwithstanding).

That's based on two hours with a slightly condensed Summer Game Fest demo that's highly subject to change, but Black Myth: Wukong feels more like the modern God of War games and less like Dark Souls so far. It also feels great to play, looks stupidly good in motion, and might be the best action RPG I've experienced since Lies of P.

Black Myth: Wukong

My demo begins with a monkey hero referred to as the Destined One, Wukong, based on the titular Sun Wukong from Journey to the West, clobbering kobold-like canine warriors in a sun-dappled forest on Black Wind Mountain. Immediately, two of Black Myth: Wukong's strengths come into focus: a fantasy setting that's gone woefully untapped in games, and Unreal Engine 5 graphical voodoo which renders that setting in painstaking detail without hurting frame rate (played on what seemed like a beefy PC).

The problem is that levels are so incredibly detailed that it's frequently unclear which areas are actually explorable, so I ran into loads of invisible walls and dead ends. That said, exploration was pretty minimal because the demo felt more like a boss rush with short sightseeing intermissions. I'm told the full game is more open with several side paths, NPC quests, and secrets, but the world of Black Myth: Wukong doesn't give me a Dark Souls, let alone Elden Ring, kind of vibe. It is, however, a fascinating place.

Inspired by the novel Journey to the West, Black Myth: Wukong revels in the refreshing and curious quirks of Chinese mythology, from shapeshifting shenanigans like turning yourself into a peach or your hair into a stick of incense, to wandering wonders introduced with utmost casualness. It presents a world where such phenomena are common and expected, so much so that they're not even worth a raised eyebrow from the people – the beast people and demons and other Yaoguai – who reside here. Characters of all shapes and sizes bend reality as readily as you or I would make a phone call. It's the best kind of magic: surreal and varied, not just fireballs and lightning bolts. This is an iconic tale rewritten, but Black Myth: Wukong retains the engrossing draw of mysticism made common.

Brief as the demo was, and as frantically as I rushed through it hoping to see as much content as possible, I didn't get the firmest grasp on the story. What impressed and often surprised me more is how Black Myth: Wukong handles combat: with a humble-looking staff in hand, and an arsenal of tricks behind it.

Wukong

Black Myth Wukong

Out of the box, even with no upgrades on its expansive skill tree, Black Myth: Wukong is kinetically satisfying. Still, it took some getting used to. The dodge feels responsive and forgiving, but for the perfect dodge, it almost seems like you have to dodge when you get hit rather than right before an attack connects. It's like wading into cold water: uncomfortable and a little scary at first, but once you're in, perfect-dodging is actually pretty nice. There's no real parry; it's all dodging all the time. You can at least twirl your staff to deflect some ranged attacks, like a ridiculous rapid-fire arrow salvo from one standard enemy who frankly deserves a promotion.

Weekly digests, tales from the communities you love, and more

Light attacks come out quickly, flow well, and sound terrific – the thwip of your staff catching the air, the woody thunk of pummeling enemies – but heavy attacks are a bit of a misdirect. You don't have heavy attacks in the traditional sense. You have charged attacks and combo breakers which should only be used in certain ways. If you tap the heavy attack normally, you'll get locked into a long animation for a swing that doesn't deal much damage. I got the sense that you aren't supposed to do this at all. Instead, you should hold the heavy button for a moment to build up a charge, then use that charged attack as an opener or gap closer. There's a great tempo to it. A charged attack was enough to one-shot or heavily stun most basic enemies I encountered, so I got a lot of use out of it.

One of the first upgrades I bought – spending skill points which, in not-Soulslike fashion, use XP not lost as a bloodstain on death – was the ability to build a charge while sprinting, almost like the hammer in Monster Hunter. Reader, I did not regret this decision. Granted, I didn't regret any upgrades because you can reset your skill tree whenever, but this is a core ability. I was also quick to improve the speed and distance of my dodge, reduce the stamina cost of dodging and sprinting, and ensure dodging doesn't interrupt my light combo.

Black Myth: Wukong

Bosses forced me to play differently. I beat the seven or so bosses I encountered (minus a hidden one I can't talk about), which ranged from hulking beasts to nimble spellcasters, and each fight had a distinct rhythm. Some were humanoid and unleashed long weapon combos that forced me to dodge repeatedly. Others were lumbering giants that wield Herculean strength capable of devastating AoE attacks that demand careful positioning.

These were all superbly animated, with clear tells. Even on my first attempt – and I was able to beat several bosses in one attempt, though others took upwards of five because this game does have some bite – I could get a sense of how they'd move and when to dodge. On a personal note, I was relieved to see very few of the absurdly delayed, dodge-baiting attack animations that have infected so many modern action RPGs.

Wukong quickly becomes an impressively agile character, and from the lock-on camera to dodge animations to enemy stagger, the game nails it in the combat. If this was a Soulslike, it would probably be the best one since Lies of P – the best Soulslike ever made, for my money – based on this demo. And we haven't even really gotten to progression.

Monkey business

Black Myth: Wukong

From what I saw, there are three skill trees: one for spells (which was unavailable in the demo), one for generalist benefits, and one for three staff fighting styles. I leaned more on the passive bonuses, but I did dabble in staff actions a bit. One upgrade improved the range of my opening light attack, and another gave me a combo breaker heavy attack that spends an energy point accumulated primarily by dealing damage and perfect-dodging attacks. If you have energy, you can also use it to instantly build up a charged attack, which creates an interesting dynamic for how to spend this resource. I preferred using charged attacks when I didn't have energy in the bank, but there are strategies for both.

I've focused on the default fighting style so far, but there are two others which you can swap to at any time

With a few upgrades, I automatically unlocked a second energy slot, and with it, a higher tier of charged attack. I could then acquire a follow-up attack to the aforementioned combo breaker, which hits much harder but requires two points of energy to pull off. Another upgrade that basically eliminates incoming damage during the initial animation made this much easier to land during boss fights, and this heavy combo became my go-to way to spend energy. Open with charged attacks, sneak in light combos, and spend my energy on combo breakers. Energy attacks heal you a little bit, too, which is nice.

I've focused on the default fighting style so far, but there are two others you can swap to at any time using the D-pad, not unlike Ghost of Tsushima. One was hidden in the demo and only unlocked at level 20 anyhow, but I did get to sample the other one, which swaps your charged attacks to a pillar stance. Wukong now uses his staff like a totem pole, sitting calmly at the top while enemies bash the bottom and chip away at your stamina. This stance completely dodges most melee attacks, and you only ascend higher as your staff builds up energy and extends. You can use that stored energy to land heavy slams with much greater reach.

I'm told you can further modify the staff through equippable items (which I never found, crafted, or otherwise saw). Your play style gains additional layers through armor pieces with stat bonuses as well as more interesting set bonuses, all color-coded like most loot games as rares and epics and so on. I found a circlet that let me chug healing gourds while sprinting, and this came in clutch for several fights.

Where the magic happens

Black Myth: Wukong

For me, the magic moment was the reveal of the actual magic system. The first spell you get, just minutes into the game (or at least into the demo), is called Immobilize. It freezes enemies, including bosses, in place for a few seconds, and it's every bit as powerful as it sounds. Freeze them, walk behind them so they whiff when they unfreeze, and get in some free hits. One Immobilize is usually enough time to delete any normal enemy or get a full combo in on a boss. This feels like cheating, and you get to do it all the time. It has a long cooldown (50 seconds, I believe), a short duration, and limited use cases - you can't freeze a boss during most attack combos, for example - but we're talking about the ability to freeze time here. This is the first spell in the game! And it doesn't even cost much mana!

There are four slots for spells, and I'm told multiple spells will eventually compete for each slot. It's hard to imagine ever dropping Immobilize, but I'm more flexible when it comes to transformation spells. After beating one early boss, a fire glaive-wielding wolf man named Guangzhi, I unlocked a spell with a very long cooldown that let me assume his form for a limited time. This essentially gives you a second health bar because your transformation has its own HP pool, and 'dying' just pops you back to monkey form. As Guangzhi, you can slice enemies with fast combos that feel weaker than your staff but also apply potent burn damage.

Black Myth: Wukong

Absorbing damage for free while dealing meaningful damage yourself gives transformation spells powerful utility. Against some bosses, I'd open with Immobilize, immediately transform, set them ablaze while they're still frozen, and usually have Immobilize back off cooldown by the time my transformation was undone. Guangzhi's form felt much clunkier than the Destined One, especially when it comes to dodging, but it's a powerful spell. I can't wait to see what and who else you can turn into, and to figure out which form I want to bring for a fight. Other loadout decisions include which bonus to add to your healing gourd, like curing poison or extra healing.

Black Myth: Wukong is the latest promising action epic to come from China, which has long been dominated by mobile games but is increasingly finding global success and attention on console and PC. It's the most-wishlisted game on Steam and one of the most-hyped games of the year. After playing it for two hours, I'd say its reputation is largely deserved. This is good stuff, maybe even great. Much remains to be seen in the full game, but as a first bite, this demo was delicious - easily one of the best things at SGF.

Black Myth: Wukong is coming to PS5 and PC on August 20, with the Xbox Series X|S version coming at a later date due to optimization issues .

Robin McGehee's journey to becoming the City of Fresno's LGBTQ+ liaison

Marc Anthony Lopez Image

FRESNO, Calif. -- Robin McGehee made history becoming Fresno's first LGBTQ+ liaison, as her pursuit for equal treatment continues in the face of politics.

In Celebration of Pride Month, ABC's " Our America: Who I'm Meant To Be " explores the McGehee's journey.

"You have a choice in a moment of conflict that you can either just take it and, succumb to the conflict, which only builds resentment," McGehee said. "It only is going to drive you more crazy. or you can decide that I'm going to do something about this. I want to be active. I want to stand up for myself."

McGehee recalls her experience leading up to the 2008 Presidential Election, which had the controversial California ballot measure Proposition 8 go to voters. The measure would add language to the California Constitution that defined marriage as between one man and one woman.

"All I could think about is we need to organize and show them that we're just like everyone else, that we need to be welcomed into this society," McGehee said.

She remembers election night vividly.

"We lost Prop. 8 on the exact same night that Barack Obama won," McGehee said. "So it was like a sucker punch. I had my hands up here, and then my belly was like in turmoil."

The Fresno Bee interviewed that same week at a candlelight vigil that McGehee had organized at her church, the Wesley United Methodist Church.

That interview would be seen by the priest of the church. and create a domino effect that would lead McGehee down the path of community activism.

RELATED: 'Our America: Who I'm Meant to Be' explores multicultural, multidimensional LGBTQIA+ community

"I got a phone call from the principal and said that she was in tears. She was like, I'm so sorry to have to tell you this, but we're going to have to remove you from the president of the PTA," McGehee said.

In response, she pulled her son who was attending school at the church and severed ties completely.

"I swore I would never stop fighting until they felt as welcomed in the community as every other kid," McGehee.

Joined by other frustrated parents, McGehee would organize a march onto the steps of Fresno City Hall called "Meet in the Middle."

"The reason that was significant is because the mayor at the time was, Alan Autry," McGehee said. "He was using the steps as a bully pulpit to speak out against our families."

"I do believe that 'Meet in the Middle' showed the community, you're not alone."

McGehee would take her activism to the national level, co-directing the National Equality March that saw 250,000 people march in Washington D.C.

As well as founding the non-profit organization "GetEQUAL." A group that advocated for LGBT social and political equality through confrontational but non-violent direct action.

"We highlighted the injustices. We brought attention to the bills that needed to be repealed..." McGehee said. "But we also brought attention to the fact that our movement is intersectional. We were arguing for trans rights early on, pushing different environments, about racial identity and not just being a white movement."

Now, 15 years later, she now holds a first-of-its-kind role as the LGBTQ+ Liaison within the City of Fresno's Office of Community Affairs.

"We want dignity. We want to be able to, you know, love our spouse and our kids and just live our life," McGehee said.

Her journey is a beacon of hope, illustrating the transformative impact that education, community, and unwavering determination can have on an individual's life.

Smotrich dreams of Israel annexing the West Bank – is he doing it?

A quiet takeover of occupied West Bank has been cooking for 18 months. Are the far right going to get their way?

Itamar Ben Gvir and Bezalal Smotrich

About a month ago, a quiet transfer happened.

The Israeli army’s Civil Administration handed more control over the occupied West Bank to the Settlements Administration, led by far-right Finance Minister Bezalel Smotrich, who lives in an illegal settlement himself .

‘against violence towards civilians’: armenia recognises palestinian state, fragments of gaza: my journey of memory and loss, israel’s actions in gaza ‘intentional attack on civilians’: un inquiry.

Now Smotrich and his Settlements Administration control more things, like building regulations and the management of farmland, parks and forests.

Since he entered government, Smotrich has pushed openly for more Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank – illegal under international law – as steps towards annexation.

So what does this all mean?

What’s the Settlements Administration?

It was set up back in February 2023, after lots of political wrangling between Smotrich – who is also a minister within the Ministry of Defense – and Yoav Gallant, the defence minister.

There were a lot of details, but the upshot is that the responsibility for monitoring illegal construction in the occupied West Bank came under Smotrich.

Meaning that illegal settlement or outpost construction would be ignored and eventually approved, while Palestinian construction would be subject to intense scrutiny over permits, and often demolished.

INTERACTIVE Israel approve new housing units settlements-1711620519

How did Smotrich swing that?

Smotrich and his fellow member of the extreme right, Itamar Ben-Gvir, head a coalition of hard right and ultra-Orthodox parties that have propped up the rule of Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.

Using that far-right heft, Smotrich negotiated to essentially take control of Israeli expansion into occupied land.

So what changed this May 29?

The army’s handover on May 29 means pages of bylaws will now be enforced by the Settlements Administration, making illegal settlement expansion even easier.

Did Israel already control the occupied West Bank?

Israel occupied the West Bank in 1967, as well as Gaza and East Jerusalem – the longest military occupation in modern history.

But, even occupation has rules.

According to international law, the occupying power cannot move its citizens into occupied land. Israel’s Supreme Court confirmed this in 2005.

That did not stop Israelis from building illegal settlements on stolen land . And it did not stop Israeli settlers – supported by security forces sometimes – from attacking Palestinians to force them off even more land .

A Palestinian man sits near a damaged house and damaged cars after Israeli settlers attacked the village of al-Mughayyer, in the Israeli-occupied West Bank, April 13, 2024

How many Palestinians live in the West Bank?

According to the US government, three million people.

In many cases, families have lived in the same house or on the same farm for centuries.

Traditional farming is a source of pride and identity, with generations dedicating themselves to tending ancestral olive groves and fruit orchards. Some Palestinian tribes are shepherds, traditionally roaming across their lands so their flocks can graze.

But settler attacks have focused on farmers and shepherds, who tend to live in small, peaceful communities that make easy pickings for armed settlers with the police as their backup.

This pushed many Palestinians to move to towns, working unskilled jobs like construction.

What’s going to happen to them now?

Life will likely get even harder.

On top of sweeping arrest campaigns being stepped up in the occupied West Bank since Israel launched its brutal war on Gaza on October 7, the number of settler attacks to scare families off their land has exploded too.

More than 500 Palestinians have been killed in attacks in the occupied West Bank.

Restrictions on movement have increased as Israel increased both fixed and mobile checkpoints and settlers have started setting up their own random roadblocks.

This means Palestinians have a much harder time getting to work or keeping their businesses running. Or seeing family, or going for a picnic. Anything, really.

Add to that the increased leniency Smotrich’s Administration is likely to show illegal settlement expansion and the crackdown on any Palestinian construction, the outlook is bleak.

INTERACTIVE -UN-LIST-ILLEGAL-SETTLEMENTS-DEC14-2023-1702556698

Is this it? Annexation?

Annexing the occupied West Bank to Israel is certainly a dream for Smotrich and his close political ally, National Security Minister Itamar Ben-Gvir.

They see taking over managing the occupation – by essentially commandeering the Civil Administration – as a major step towards that ambition.

'nuttin but azz' basketball tournament canceled after raunchy theme sparks outrage, new jersey basketball 'nuttin but azz' event canceled ... after raunchy theme sparks outrage.

A celebrity basketball tournament slated to go down at a high school in New Jersey next month has been axed ... after the event's raunchy theme sparked outrage in the community.

The "Nuttin But Azz" Celebrity Baddies Basketball contest was all set to go forward on July 21 at West Side High School in Newark ... but after a video promoting the event featured girls shaking their butts in tiny thongs at the H.S.'s gym -- officials pumped the brakes on it all.

According to Newark Public Schools spokesperson Nancy Deering , the event "was supposed to be a community basketball event sponsored by" a local politician ... but once the promo hit social media -- everything changed.

"No school or district official approved the activity depicted in the video," she said in a statement obtained by NJ.com , "or knew that an event at one of our schools would include such activity."

After the event was halted ... the tournament's organizer, celebrity music manager Big Fendi , released a mea culpa apologizing to the school's principal as well as the councilman who had initially agreed to help put the event on.

"I deeply apologize," he said. "The content of this video, you knew nothing about. We were doing the event, and things went a little left and out of control. And I take full responsibility for that, because you guys had no knowledge what these girls would be wearing."

Big Fendi also said sorry to the parents and students who might have been affected by the footage.

It's not clear yet if the tournament -- which charged anywhere from $50-$500 for admission and promised $10,000 to the winning team -- will be rescheduled for a different venue.

How Marco Rubio went from rival to one of Donald Trump’s VP finalists

Rubio is a finalist to be Trump’s running mate, the culmination of a years-long shift that has stunned and disappointed some of the senator’s former associates.

the journey to the west ao3

When Marco Rubio flew with President Donald Trump on Air Force One in 2017, the Republican senator from Florida cracked a joke about Trump’s reported strong handshake with French President Emmanuel Macron. Rubio knew his hands weren’t small, Trump quipped.

Trump was referring to Rubio’s awkward attack on him — an implicit reference to male anatomy — during the 2016 primary, when the two were bitter rivals, charting different courses for the GOP. The in-flight conversation, recounted by then-Rep. Carlos Curbelo (R-Fla.), was one of the earliest indicators of a thaw in a once-frosty dynamic between Rubio and the man he had labeled a “con artist.” Now Rubio is a finalist to be Trump’s running mate, the culmination of a years-long shift that has impressed the former president’s allies — and surprised and disappointed some of the senator’s former associates.

“He decided to jump in the mud with Donald Trump back in 2016, and that really backfired,” Curbelo said in an interview. “But since then, he’s really kind of figured out how to navigate the Trumpian waters of the new Republican Party.”

The Trump campaign in recent weeks has requested paperwork from at least eight potential vice-presidential candidates, including Rubio. Trump has said he will announce his pick at the Republican National Convention in Milwaukee, which begins July 15.

Rubio spoke only in general terms in a recent interview about the prospect of running with Trump, saying that “anyone who’s offered the opportunity to serve our country in a position like that should not dismiss it and should consider doing it if their life allows them to do it, but I’m not going to opine on me because that’s presumptuous.”

Trump sees Rubio as an effective messenger for his agenda who is good on television, according to two people familiar with the president’s thinking who spoke on the condition of anonymity to describe the process — one of whom noted that Trump spoke favorably about a recent Rubio appearance on “Meet The Press.” The former president also values Rubio’s foreign policy credentials, allies said, and sees him as a potential key player on Western Hemisphere issues. Kellyanne Conway, Trump’s 2016 campaign manager and a top aide in his White House, has argued the Cuban American senator is among the potential vice-presidential candidates who could help Trump make inroads with voters of color. Rubio is also popular among traditional Republicans, which could expand Trump’s reach and boost fundraising, the people said.

One major complicating factor for Rubio is that he and Trump are both Florida residents. Under the 12th Amendment, a Florida elector can’t vote for the ticket if Trump and his running mate are both Florida residents. During a private fundraiser last month at Mar-a-Lago, Trump alluded to that challenge.

“Every time they say ‘Is he being considered?’ I said absolutely even though we do have a little Florida problem,” Trump said, also nodding to Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Fla.), another Floridian under consideration. “They want to give you a little penalty: They want to take away all of your delegates. Other than that, there’s no problem.”

Unlike some of the other finalists, Rubio refrained from going to the New York courthouse with Trump during his hush money trial and hasn’t aggressively hit the fundraising circuit for him. He has found other ways to show his support, including a Newsweek opinion piece that described the upcoming election as “America’s Last Chance.”

“A vote for anyone other than Trump is literally a vote to normalize the weaponization of government against political opponents and criminalize the traditional American way of life,” Rubio wrote, echoing the former president.

Rubio also spoke at a Trump birthday event Friday in West Palm Beach, hosted by Club 47 USA, a Trump fan club.

After once declaring that Trump “has spent his entire career sticking it to the little guy,” Rubio told the audience at the Palm Beach County Convention Center: “He’s not doing it for him, he doesn’t need this. He’s running for president, he’s putting up with all of this because he’s doing it for us. He’s doing it for America, the country that he loves.”

The mutual support, which was years in the making according to interviews with associates of both men, contrasts sharply with the Republican presidential primary eight years ago, when Trump disparagingly dubbed Rubio “Little Marco” before routing him in Florida and forcing him from the contest. Some of Rubio’s former associates expressed surprise at some of his recent votes and statements.

Before his 2016 White House run, Rubio embraced an optimistic vision of America, often recounting his own experience as the son of Cuban immigrants as living proof of the American Dream. Less than three years after being elected to the Senate at 39 in the 2010 tea party wave, Rubio graced the cover of Time magazine, with the headline “The Republican Savior.” In 2015, he launched a presidential campaign on the promise of generational change and a “New American Century.”

For much of the 2016 campaign, Rubio largely avoided talking about Trump. As the race narrowed and Trump cemented his position as the leading candidate, Rubio suddenly engaged in the kind of name-calling and personal attack that Trump had wielded effectively. Trump was a “con man,” to hear Rubio tell it, one who was “dangerous” and would fracture the GOP. In turn, Trump said Rubio was a “disaster for Florida” and suggested he “couldn’t get elected dogcatcher.”

At one point, Rubio mocked the size of Trump’s hands — and alluded to another part of his anatomy: “You know what they say about men with small hands? You can’t trust them.”

Trump later responded: “He referred to my hands — ‘if they’re small, something else must be small.’ I guarantee you there’s no problem.”

The attacks backfired, and Rubio soon bowed out of the race. Just before his exit, Rubio said it was “getting harder every day” to see supporting Trump. In his concession speech, Rubio called for a “new political establishment” and recognized that his aspirational pitch was no match for the anger- and grievance-fueled Trump campaign.

“People are angry. They are frustrated. They’re being left behind by this economy, and then they are told, ‘Look, if you’re against illegal immigration, that makes you a bigot,’” Rubio said in that speech. “From a political standpoint, the easiest thing to have done in this campaign is to jump on all those anxieties I just talked about, to make people angrier, make people more frustrated. But I chose a different route.”

One former Rubio fundraiser described the speech in Florida as “the fundamental change of Marco Rubio,” a sign that he’d move in a more populist direction over the next eight years.

By May , Rubio was on board with Trump.

“Trump didn’t create 2016, 2016 created Trump,” Rubio told The Washington Post in a recent interview. “The country was ready for someone that was willing to challenge the orthodoxy of the economy, on foreign policy, in a way that was needed and that I think is needed even more now.”

During Trump’s presidency, Rubio worked closely with the administration on Latin America policy, drawing comparisons to a “virtual secretary of state ” for the region. The Trump administration sought his advice for hires, and he helped shape its policy toward Cuba and Venezuela. Rubio also worked with Ivanka Trump on a paid family leave initiative and sought to expand the child tax credit as part of the GOP’s 2017 tax law. That legislation increased the child tax credit, although Trump rebuffed Rubio’s attempts to do so more significantly in exchange for a smaller corporate tax cut than what Republicans passed into law.

“It’s important to keep in mind that politics is ultimately politics,” said Jason Miller, the Trump campaign adviser who referred to now-Vice President Harris’s attacks on President Biden over school busing during the Democratic primary. “By comparison, President Trump and any of his prospective VP picks will be much more simpatico.”

While Rubio has largely aligned with Trump on policy and recently echoed his refusal to commit to accepting the November election results, there are some differences that raise questions about what their dynamic would be as ticket mates or in a new administration.

Rubio, a more traditional foreign policy hawk, broke with the Trump administration over sanctions on Russia, Iran and North Korea. He also broke with Trump over his emergency declaration to build a border wall. And the senator voted to certify the 2020 election results.

But Rubio more recently voted against a $95 billion foreign aid bill that delivered billions of dollars in weapons and support to key U.S. allies Ukraine and Israel — a move that surprised some fellow Republicans and former associates. Rubio — who in 2013 championed a comprehensive immigration overhaul with a path to citizenship for undocumented immigrants before disavowing the effort after its collapse — cited federal inaction on the border as his reason and in a floor speech described the package as “legislative blackmail.”

Asked how his views on foreign policy differ from Trump’s, Rubio responded, “I don’t have a line by line for you on it, but I can tell you that generally I think we’ve entered an era where we have to be much more pragmatic in our foreign policy and … our national interests should be at the core of all the decisions that we make.”

He added, “Things [Trump] talks about — maybe they’re expressed in ways that are not orthodox politically — they’re not unorthodox in terms of public policy.”

Trump has proved quick to forgive when there is political benefit. Sen. Lindsey Graham (R-S.C.) became a staunch ally after Trump gave out his cellphone number in 2015. More recently, he and Senate Minority Leader Mitch McConnell (R-Ky.) fist-bumped at a Senate GOP meeting in D.C. (McConnell and Trump hadn’t spoken in years after the senator called the former president “practically and morally responsible” for the Jan. 6 , 2021, attack on the U.S. Capitol.)

“I don’t think that the evolution, if you will, from ‘Little Marco’ to a leading contender for VP is unusual for Donald Trump,” said Sen. Kevin Cramer (R-N.D.). “It’s like being on the football field for, you know, 60 minutes of being in the trenches, pushing, running and knocking down, punching, clawing for victory and then praying in the middle of the field after the game.”
