This summer, the band headlined the Lollapalooza Festival in Chicago, uniting thousands of fans across generations with their decade-spanning setlist of beloved anthems. The group also rocked Central Park with “Anyway You Want It” and “Don’t Stop Believin’” at We Love NYC: The Homecoming Concert, in addition to honoring 9/11 first responders at the Tunnel to Towers concert in August. Journey features founder Neal Schon (lead guitarist), Jonathan Cain (keyboards, backing vocals), Arnel Pineda (lead vocals) Jason Derlatka (keyboards, backing vocals), and Deen Castranovo (drums, backing vocals).

“It’s that time - time to get back to where we are used to being - on Stage!” says Neal Schon. “We are looking forward to shifting into high gear and bringing you the best show possible. The band is running on all 12 cylinders and very excited!  Please come and join us once again for an evening full of rocking stage connection fun. See you soon Friends.”

“Touring next year with Journey is going to be great fun! An epic night you won’t want to miss,” Billy Idol says. “I’m excited to get back to so many wonderful cities and I’m bringing Steve Stevens and the rest of the Billy Idol band with me!”

About Journey Since the group's formation in 1973, Journey has earned 19 top 40 singles, 25 gold and platinum albums, and has sold nearly 100 million albums globally. Their Greatest Hits album is certified 15 times-platinum, making Journey one of the few bands to ever have been diamond-certified, and their song “Don’t Stop Believin’”has been streamed over one billion times alone.

Journey was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017 and 2018's co-headlining tour with Def Leppard was the band’s most successful tour to date, landing them in the Top 10 year-end touring chart with more than 1 million tickets sold, and earning them the prestigious Billboard “Legends Of Live” touring award. March 2019 saw the release of Escape & Frontiers Live In Japan, a live DVD/CD set from their concert at the Budokan in Tokyo featuring the band's first-ever performances of the albums Escape and Frontiers in their entirety. Journey has also received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and were inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall Of Fame. Additionally, the band is the subject of the award-winning documentary Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey about the band’s resurgence upon adding Arnel Pineda as lead singer after founding member Neal Schon discovered the Philippines native on YouTube.

About Billy Idol For forty-five years, Billy Idol has been one of the faces and voices of rock’n’roll, with an artistic resume to match the brilliant light of the image. First as the camera-ready front man for Generation X, between 1977 and 1981 Billy emerged with three albums that made positivity, emotional depth and high pop synonymous with punk rock. In 1982, Billy embarked on a remarkable transatlantic/transgenre solo career that integrated clubland throb, wide-screen depth and drama, rockabilly desperation, the bold and simple lines of punk, and rock’n’roll decadence.

Decades after releasing his first 45, Billy Idol still makes gliding, thumping, cinematic songs about sin, redemption and the love of rock’n’roll…and that’s what you will find on The Roadside, Billy Idol’s first release of original material in seven years. Produced by Butch Walker (Green Day, Weezer, amongst many others), The Roadside takes Billy Idol into new but familiar waters full of color, power, atmosphere, attitude, and mystery.

On The Roadside Billy Idol is joined by his friend and collaborator since 1981, guitarist and co-songwriter Steve Stevens. For 40 years – 40 years! ¬– Steve has been Billy Idol’s sonic assassin and master blender of tones and textures, the thinking man’s shredder and the shredding man’s Picasso.

Detroit,Michigan(March 2,2022)- When one of the most legendary rock bands of all time, Rock and Roll Hall of Famers Journey,   announced their Freedom Tour 2022 featuring special guests Billy Idol and Toto,    middle aged rockers in the Motorcity quickly marked the date that tickets went on sale to the public. Unfortunately for Idol fans at the Little Caesars Arena in Detroit, the “White Wedding”singer had to drop off the first leg due to some untimely health related issues. Luckily for them, touring partners Toto stepped up to the fill the void and take on the open dates. The two bands, Journey and Toto, mesh seamlessly on tour together due to the fact they both share an uncanny common background. They had their most successful albums, Journey’s “Escape” and “Toto IV,” within a year of one another and both bands’ guitarists (Journey’s Neal Schon, Toto’s Steve Lukather) rank as the only original members left on their perspective rosters and also featured soloists throughout their respective sets. Both groups have been through legal tribulations with past members during the past few years and are out now with fresh lineups, some new music and a palpable sense of a new beginning.

Though Toto put in pleasing 60-minute performance, tonight was all about Journey. As in prior tours, Journey fashioned their stage set with nostalgic remembrances and imagery which left little question that the setlist itself would be built for mass crowd-pleasing appeal. Throughout their career Neal Schon and company have become quite agile at mapping out a setlist that is equal parts hits and album tracks that have become fan favorites. But Journey arrived in the proverbial “South Detroit,” much earlier than anyone anticipated at Little Caesars Arena with a few welcomed surprises in their pockets and one in particular that depending on expectations, either set the tone for the night or made the high energy encore a little too anti-climatic.

The venerable rock icons rolled out its anthem “Don’t Stop Believin’,” which put the referenced but non-existent part of Detroit on the map in 1981, as the third song in the show rather than in its usual spot as the finale. Not that the placement mattered at that particular moment in time however; As frontman Arnel Pineda extended his microphone towards the audience, fans faithfully belted out the “born and raised in South Detroit” line as exuberantly as they have for decades, at sporting events worldwide as well as Journey concerts. Of course, while the night was about more than just one song in particular, it’s easy to forget that the chorus of Don’t Stop Believin’ only appears at the very end of the song, but honestly who are we kidding, is there really any other more recognizable lyrics in music besides the aforementioned “born and raised in South Detroit?”

journey tour detroit

So it made sense for Journey to shake things up a bit over the course of its 17 songs on Wednesday. Flanked by multiple video screens, with the band’s intricate designed logo stretched across the stage floor, the San Francisco formed band came out swinging with favorites such as “Only the Young,” “Stone in Love” and the power ballad “Faithfully” in addition to “Don’t Stop Believin’,” and though his voice was obscured by the erratic sound mix throughout the night, Pineda leapt and ran like a man half his age who’s energy drink kicked in right at showtime.

It’s testament to the depth of Journey’s hit-laden catalog that its most popular song in their repertoire could be front-loaded in the performance without tipping the diversity of the nearly 100-minute show. It was the group’s first indoor show in the Detroit metro area in nearly twenty years, but it brought back lucid memories of the multi-night stands at the legendary venue Cobo Arena, where the group recorded part of its renowned 1981 live album “Captured.

In stark contrast between those early career performances and now, this current incarnation of Journey shares the load more than ever before. Deen Castronovo, back on drums after a seven-year absence, took the emotive lead vocals on the melodramatic “Mother, Father,” while keyboardist Jason Derlatka, now a full-fledged member after serving as an out-of-sight addition on previous tours, handled “Suzanne.” Schon, the last remaining original member in Journey, paid tribute to previous frontman Steve Perry while introducing the 1978 mega hit “Lights” — and credited Detroit with its widely recognized role in breaking that year’s “Infinity” album nationally.

Wednesday night’s hit parade also included a bevy of classic rock radio favorites that included  “Ask the Lonely,” “Who’s Crying Now” and a long and lusty version of “Lovin’ Touchin’ Squeezin’” during which Schon and keyboarist Jonathan Cain traded licks  much to the delight of the appreciative crowd. The 2021 single “The Way We Used to Be,” from Journey’s upcoming “Freedom” album, was a setlist requirement and well-received, and the closing quartet of “Wheel in the Sky,” “Separate Ways (Worlds Apart),” “Be Good to Yourself” and “Any Way You Want It” proved once again, that Journey can deploy its abundance of A-list material, any way it wants it and still guarantee a good time for all.

Journey has continued to successfully reimage themselves time after time with respect to their ever popular sound and universal appeal. Unfortunately, they have yet to have an enduring hit with Pineda on vocals and that has less to do with his abilities and more to do with Journey’s trademark sound. That in a microcosm, is why a Journey concert works so well at touching off nostalgia for the ’70s and ’80s along with memories to whatever you were doing during that time of your life. As for the newer song they played tonight, it seamlessly fit right in and thats a welcome return with a potential new album in the works. Fans clearly feel a connection to the glory days, especially Neal Schon but also keyboardist Jonathan Cain who continue to fill arenas across the globe of fans wanting to relive a little of those memories from so long ago. Sure, there were a few hiccups with the sound tonight but really, who cares. The vast majority of the near capacity crowd was there for one thing and as the lyrics of the 1981 hit “Stone in Love” so eloquently proclaims ; “ Those crazy nights, I do remember in my youth I do recall, those were the best times……….”

ABOUT JOURNEY

Since the group's formation in 1973, JOURNEY has earned 19 top 40 singles, 25 gold and platinum albums, and has sold over 100 million albums globally. Their "Greatest Hits" album is certified 15 times-platinum, making JOURNEY one of the few bands to ever have been diamond-certified, and their song "Don't Stop Believin'" has been streamed over one billion times alone.

JOURNEY was inducted into the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame in 2017, and 2018's co-headlining tour with DEF LEPPARD was the band's most successful tour to date, landing them in the Top 10 year-end touring chart with more than 1 million tickets sold, and earning them the prestigious Billboard "Legends Of Live" touring award. JOURNEY has also received a star on the Hollywood Walk Of Fame and were inducted into the Hollywood Bowl Hall Of Fame. Additionally, the band is the subject of the award-winning documentary "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey" about the band's resurgence upon adding Arnel Pineda as lead singer after JOURNEY Founder, Neal Schon discovered the Philippines native on YouTube.

The members of TOTO are celebrating an accomplishment few bands have achieved in the modern era. Cumulative streams of the ensemble’s repertoire

now exceed 3 billion plays. Amongst the most listened to recordings, “Africa” accounts for over one billion streams at Spotify alone. This year the song was recertified by the RIAA 8X Platinum.

Over the past decade, the band has had a major renaissance in popularity like few bands at this point in their career. The audience is truly multi-generational, becoming younger with each passing year. Joining Steve Lukather and Joseph Williams are band members bassist John Pierce (Huey Lewis and The News), drummer Robert “Sput” Searight (Ghost-Note, Founding member Snarky Puppy, Snoop Dogg), keyboardist Dominique “Xavier” Taplin (Prince, Ghost-Note), multi-instrumentalist / vocalist Warren Ham (Ringo Starr) and keyboardist / background vocalist Steve Maggiora,. This line-up marks the fifteenth incarnation of Toto in consideration of band members or sidemen who joined or exited. Individually and collectively, few have had a larger imprint on pop culture than the members of TOTO. The family tree can be heard on an astonishing 5000 albums that together amass a sales history of a half a billion albums. Amongst these recordings, NARAS applauded the performances with hundreds of Grammy nominations.

With now 45+ years together and literally thousands of credits, including the biggest selling album of all time: Michael Jackson’s Thriller, and accolades to their names, TOTO remains one of the top selling touring and recording acts in the world. They are the benchmark by which many artists base their sound and production, and they continue to transcend the standards set by the entire music community, being simply synonymous with musical credibility. They are pop culture and are one of the few 70’s bands that have endured the changing trends and styles continuing to remain relevant.

Hugely successful stadium rock outfit, Journey have sold millions of records, after rising to prominence in the 70s and 80s, perhaps best known for their hit single, "Don't Stop Believing."

Journey began life in San Francisco, US, having formed in 1973, spending several years developing their sound and lineup over their early albums. Their initial offerings were moderately successful jazz-rock records, that frequently broke out into instrumental experimentations. The influence of musical prodigy and former Santana guitarist, Neal Schon, was certainly on display, backed by Ross Valory (bass), Aynsley Dunbar (drums) and George Tickner (guitar), although George left after one album. Former Santana member, Gregg Rolie (keyboards, vocals) joined shortly after.

Not finding mainstream success, Journey decided they needed to find a strong vocalist, employing Steve Perry for the role. His presence immediately had an effect, with 1978's "Infinity" selling a million records in just one year. "Evolution" and "Departure" continued this success yet it was with "Escape" that they had created a real hit, featuring three Top Ten singles, "Who's Crying Now," "Don't Stop Believing" and "Open Arms." Journey sold millions of copies of "Escape," topping the charts internationally. 1983's "Frontiers" also spawned a number of hits, with Perry then embarked upon a solo venture, achieving double-platinum sales with 1984's "Street Talk."

Perry returned to Journey for 1986's "Raised on Radio," however the band disbanded shortly after. Perry continued his solo recordings whilst Schon and Cain formed Bad English and created the hit single, "When I See You Smile." In 1996, the band reunited, releasing the widely successful "Trial By Fire," bolstered by the success of the single, "When You Love a Woman." Tours followed, although minus Perry, maintaining the band's popularity.

In 2005, Journey's success was recognized, after receiving a star on the Hollywood Walk of Fame, which was followed by the band embarking on a celebratory 30th anniversary tour. Struggling to find a vocalist who could front Journey, they trialled Jeff Scott Soto before finding Arnel Pineda, a Filipino vocalist who they had discovered on Youtube. He made his debut with the band on 2008's "Revelation," which proved Journey still had songwriting abilities, with the album going Platinum. In 2011, they celebrated their prog-rock roots, blending their early sounds with the arena rock style they had developed into at their peak for the album, "Eclipse" in 2011.

Live reviews

I attended the Journey concert at the Minnesota State Fair on Labor Day 2014. It was supposed to rain that night, but the weather gods must also be Journey fans as it was a perfect evening for a concert. It is funny that a group with members in their 60s and the youngest member being Arnel Pineda at 46 had far more energy than the warm-up band with most members being in their 20s or 30s. I have been a Journey fan for a good 7 years now, and I discovered them by accident while browsing through records at a bookstore. As such, Journey to me means Steve Perry and the first time I saw them in concert last year was with Arnel Pineda and hearing him sing the songs that Perry largely wrote and performed was disorienting. I really enjoy the new album Eclipse, and it wasn’t hard for me to enjoy Pineda as these are his songs to sing and his voice is incredible. This year, I was more accustomed to Pineda and was determined to enjoy myself, and did I ever! The band has a great amount of energy and the crowd responded in kind, singing along to the songs and cheering like crazy. You’ll hear the classics for sure (Don’t Stop Believin’ was really special as the crowd really got loud when singing along to that) and that was really fun to hear, but there were some unexpected surprises as well. Firstly, it was nice to hear some of their new songs like "Ritual" from Eclipse and "Faith in the Heartland" from Generations, all the more so as the economy is not very good and many times the Midwest is considered flyover country by the coastal states. As good as Journey's classics are, I appreciated that they played their new songs too. Let's pray that "City of Hope" and "Tantra" will get stage time next year.

In an age where most “artists” can’t sing a lick without the aid of Autotune, every one of the band members can sing in addition to playing instruments. The drummer, Dean Castronovo (a newcomer to the band in 2001) sang the lead vocals for “Mother, Father” while playing drums at the same time. This song is very difficult as the key is very high and requires a great amount of power and range to express the powerful lyrics. He nailed it! I was not expecting the drummer to sing, but it was an unexpected surprise. Jonathan Cain is a very talented man, as he is not only a great piano player, but can play the guitar and provide vocals as well. He was very impressive singing “Anytime” and his piano portions in “Faithfully” were stunning as always. Ross Valory is the bass man, but can sing backing vocals as well.

Neil Schon is also amazing as his guitar work is legendary. From his “here comes the train” sequence in “Don’t Stop Belevin’” to his more intimate moments in “Who’s Crying Now” or “Open Arms”, he can also sing quite well and you are also treated to his rendition of the national anthem as well as a psychedelic guitar piece that has a bit of Indian sitar mixed in. It was really a trip, and shame on the people who were talking during these moments as they were great to listen to. Arnel Pineda is made for Journey. I must admit that I would love to hear Perry sing these songs, but that’s not going to happen and Pineda is the only other person I can think of that can fill Perry’s shoes. He has a tremendous amount of energy, range, and is very kind and humble and still looks amazed that he is leading a band like Journey. He was homeless for many years in his youth and spent a lifetime covering Journey songs and is now leading them. He appreciated how much the crowd got into the songs and promised to return to the Twin Cities. I’ll be there!

The Journey show is Syracuse NY on August 28 was absolutely fantastic. I had seen them earlier this year and there was some minor sound issues. Not this time. The band hit the stage and rocked the house for about 90 minutes. Their sound was as crisp as their recordings. Neil was incredible as any fan would expect. Dean is a monster on the drums, Jonathan is just so smooth, Ross was as his usual entertaining the crowd with his facial Expressions and Arnel has certainly found a comfort zone and without question is a focal point of the band. When anyone goes to a Journey concert there are high expectations and this concert started fast paced and continued through the night. The band truly rocked the house. They went as far back playing anytime and La Do Da to current release Ritual. The stadium was close to sold out. When 'Don't Stop Believing' started you could hardly hear the back due to the crowd signing along. That's what should happen at one of their shows. The band also expressed their appreciation of the fans. They did not take the crowd for granted. All of the bands members thanked the fans for coming out and Arnel specifically thanked the fans numerous times. The band is not only rocking today like they did 35 years ago, they truly show that they still enjoy it. If you don't have tickets to an up coming show or if you have already seen one of their shows, you should get tickets NOW. This was my second show this year and I would travel again to see them. There was nothing to criticize the band for. They just Came out and nailed it. Great job. Now quit reading reviews and go find where you can enjoy the experience

Not going to lie, I went to a Journey, Steve Miller Band, Tower of Power concert somewhat dreading to see Journey. Like the rest of this world and probably a few more, I have that love hate relationship with Journey's mega hit, sing alongs, and was not too excited to be going to see them. But, a couple of my friends were going and concerts at Shoreline tend to be a good time, so I went along with it. Needless to say, how pleaseanty surprised I was to find myself up dancing and belting the lyrics to songs I had never heard before (you can be sure that when Don't Stop and Anyway You Want It came on I was the loudest one there).

All this coming from the kid who thought it was going to be a real snoozefest. I would categorize this concert as a show to see for the fun and the experience over the music itself. Unless, in some bizarre turn of events, you are in fact a Journey fan, in which case buy your tickets now and throw on that tour t-shirt from the last time they came to town. The lead singer, a short Filipino fellow who apparently they found on tour in South East Asia, will have you wondering if he has been in the band all along with his streaming energy and spot on voice. All in all, a good show to go see with friends. Make sure to get there early and get a good spot to set up shop!

I can't think of anyone who won't have heard the classic hit 'Don't Stop Believin'', and I must say, this was the only track that I was familiar with before seeing Journey live. It wasn't a gig that I had planned on going to, but the experience was just phenomenal. The energy of their performance was just out of this world, especially considering they've been performing for the last 40 years! Each member of the band took a solo which was a really cool moment to give everyone the credit that they deserved, and it was great to be able to applaud each member individually. Even if you don't know the back catalogue of their music, the great 80s vibe is perfect for dancing alone, and the catchy hooks have you singing along before too long, which is what I found myself doing! The balance of the band and vocals complimented eachother well, with neither overpowering the other, making for a great sound in the massive venue, which had great acoustics. Great vocals, band, performance, and tracks. Such a fun night, I would definitely go again, and can say from experience that it really doesn't matter whether you know the music well or not to have a blast!

Arnel Pineda is an amazing addition to Journey. His stage presence is fantastic and he really knows how to interact with the audience. During the first few songs it seemed his voice was drowned out by the music, but the remainder of the concert you could hear him better. The rest of the band is equally talented in each of their respective areas as witnessed by their solo performances. The entire show was fantastic. The only draw back was drunk people in the audience. There was a handicapped women sitting next to us who was unable to stand and the people in front of us refused to sit after multiple times of asking them. A fight started between another audience member due to their lack of consideration. The staff quickly interceded, but didn't have the couple sit down. I think the show should be enjoyed by everyone who purchases a ticket and not by the few who think they are having a private concert just for them. After all, the ticket you purchase is for the seat. You should sit in it, especially if it is interfering with other people's view. Unfortunately this experience overshadowed the otherwise fantastic concert.

I thought nothing could be more exciting than sneaking through a basement window of a university auditorium to see one of the premiere classic rock bands of all-time. It hadn't been 30 seconds after we figured out where there were two open seats when Journey opened their set with "Anyway You Want It" to the roar of the 3,000+ fans in attendance. Guitarist Neal Schon sealed the deal for me with his precise, piercing riffs as the band rocked the crowd with intense energy that the crowd responded to all night. The synchronized lighting system that rhythmically danced with the music for almost every beat contributed to those on the main floor dancing, singing and waving their arms for the entire show while even spectators like us on the risers couldn't help but be out of our seats grooving all night long. Journey is one of those bands that has such polished musically talent that they make the experience of attending a live concert unforgettable. Taking into account the hundreds of concerts I've attended - for pay - this Journey concert will go down in the books as one of the top three...even if it would not have been for free.

Wow, what a tour-de-force of Rock & Roll power...

The Journey, Doobies and Dave Mason show was better than I'd hoped or expected...

I'm a music TV producer and have friends who have played in all of these bands over the years so have seen each group a number of times. I'm loving these super-group mash-ups of recent years and this one did not disappoint me.

I do want to commend the sound crew for the "Journey" set because it was one of the most expert and satisfying live mixes and exhibited real genius in the EQ, and overall artistic treatment.

In recent years I've noticed ( to my disappointment ) more events with inept live sound due to the apparent lack of talent or concern amongst our live-sound mixing communities. Nothing can ruin a great performance easier than a slacker at the board and I'm very happy to report, Journey's sound crew are at the top of their game...

I attended my very first Journey concert last night. Journey with Steve Perry was the very first rock band I truly was enamored with. Sure, the others soon followed, like Def Leppard, Motley Crue, Whitesnake, Guns 'n Roses, Bon Jovi, just to name a few, but none really truly rivaled Journey.

I've always stayed faithful to Journey. The lyrics resonate, the music simply thrills. I'll forever equate "The Voice" with Journey, but I don't mind saying Arnel.... DAMN, you rock! (Neal, glad to see you can still hold your own ;) )

In short, if you are, or have ever been a Journey fan, they will not disappoint.

Saw them in Calgary in 2012 and Arnel had a flu and wasn't even close to top form and the rest of the band had to give him breaks because he was so sick. This time everyone was at their best and it was truly a great show. Very few vocalists sound as good live as they do in a studio, Arnel Pineda is one of them. Neal Schon's solo project wasn't a bad opener, but it didn't exactly get the audience excited either. Overall it was a spectacular show though, I'd see them again without question because of it.

This band just doesn't quit!! Have been going to see them since the70's and they are still o e of the best shows going these days. My daughter is now a big fan. The show last night in Louisville was as good as ever. These guys work hard and it shows in the quality of the show.

Now it's even more fun to watch knowing they are in the Rock And Roll Hall of Fame!!!

If they come anywhere around do not miss the show!! I came to this KY show from FL....

What a wonderful experience in Detroit! I have lived in Michigan for 20+ years and have only been to a few key places in Detroit (Comerica Park and the Fox theater mainly). This tour provided me with so many ideas, restaurants, and places to come back and check out. We had a short stop at a restaurant for snacks and drinks and we had a really great time. The sunset was beautiful and it was a perfect date night for a young couple. Karin also provided us with a ton of history about Detroit, she is full of knowledge and we loved to hear everything she had to say about the various places we were driving by. We are looking forward to more tours with City Tour Detroit!

TripAdvisor, January 2023

Absolutely fantastic experience with City Tour Detroit. The tour is very well-thought-out, rich with fascinating history, and punctuated with stops for some of Detroit’s best culinary experiences.

Karin was our tour guide, and she is a font of knowledge about both the historic and contemporary details of Detroit. She is an excellent ambassador for the city, as well as a gold mine of knowledge about a city so abundant in history, character, and significance.

TripAdvisor, April 2023

Excellent tour! Highly recommended! The tour explore the rich historical events that took place in Detroit during the slavery. With a very prepared guide and actors a vivid drama shows how the fugitive slaves were able to find freedom crossing Detroit in their way to Canada.

An outstanding tour! Jason was exceptionally informative and answered just about every question I could think of about Detroit. He has an encyclopaedic knowledge of the city, and really gave the impression that Detroit never “went away” – but that the spirit of the city remained thanks to the welcoming people who inhabit it. Can’t recommend enough.

Had a wonderful time with Jason and Laurie. So much to learn about this beautiful city. It is a hidden gem! Highly recommended a walking tour so you can get to know Detroit up front!

Paul is a great tour guide. Very knowledgeable. He provided lots of info and answered all our questions. Even though it rained and was cold and windy, we had a great time and would do it again! Highly recommend this tour.

The Rotunda Building was not Henry Ford's only futuristic idea ondisplay at the 1934 World's Fair/Century of Progress Exposition in Chicago. Always looking to be in the vanguard of the next big thing, Henry thought it would be the perfect place to introduce an item he hoped would revolutionize transportation (and lead to big sales)- his high-speed Railplane! Ford had enlisted William Bushnell Stout to design it (he had also done the Ford Tri-Motor airplane). Pullman Manufacturing made the prototype. It had a lot going for it- 60 feet long with a streamlined aluminum body that let its twin 6 cylinder truck engines push it to top speeds over 90 MPH while getting 5 miles per gallon of gas (pretty good for a train)! All that plus good looks and a smooth quiet ride. What more could you ask for? Sales! There weren't any! Union Pacific ordered one 3-car version and that was it! The project was dropped. #MondayMemories Along a certain stretch of track, running south from the Rouge Plant through Melvindale, Allen Park, and Taylor, you may have noticed and wondered about some strange structures. These catenary arches are remnants of Henry Ford's 1920s attempt to electrify the Detroit, Toledo, & Ironton rail line that fed his factories. After the project was abandoned, plans were made to remove the arches. Made of wet-cured concrete in Ford's Rouge Plant, it was discovered that they were almost indestructible. It took 6-man crews an entire day to remove a single arch; after 2 months it was decided to leave the rest. They're still here. I believe these are the southernmost remaining ones. Patrick Kane is returning to the Detroit Red Wings for next season on a contract that gives him a chance to earn up to $6.5 million if he helps the Original Six franchise end its lengthy playoff drought.

Kane signed a one-year contract that a person with knowledge of the situation says is worth $4 million in salary with $2.5 million in additional incentives. The person spoke to The Associated Press on condition of anonymity because terms of the deal were not announced.

Kane, a 35-year-old winger from Buffalo who won the Stanley Cup three times with Chicago from 2010-15, has continued playing after hip resurfacing surgery that only two other NHL players have returned from. He was nearly a point-a-game player in his first season with the Red Wings, scoring 20 goals and adding 27 assists.

Only Mike Modano has more NHL points than Kane’s 1,284 among U.S.-born players. He is entering his 17th professional season.

Kane figured to have multiple suitors if he reached free agency. Instead, he will try to lead Detroit back to the postseason for the first time since 2016. The eight-season run without a playoff appearance is the longest in the organization’s history that dates to 1926.

The Red Wings are expected to continue to be active in the free agent and trade markets, potentially adding a goaltender after missing out on the final wild-card spot in the Eastern Conference because of a tiebreaker with Washington.

The team extended qualifying offers to restricted free agents Lucas Raymond, Moritz Seider, Jonatan Berggren and Joe Veleno to retain their rights.

Klay Thompson to join Mavericks, Warriors get 2 second-round picks in sign-and-trade: Sources

SACRAMENTO, CALIFORNIA - APRIL 16: Klay Thompson #11 of the Golden State Warriors reacts after missing a shot against the Sacramento Kings in the second half during the Play-In Tournament at Golden 1 Center on April 16, 2024 in Sacramento, California. Klay Thompson will join the Dallas Mavericks , league sources said Monday, a move that ends his 13-year run as a core member of the Golden State Warriors dynasty.

The Warriors will receive two second-round draft picks — Dallas’ 2031 second-round pick and a 2025 least favorable pick between the Denver Nuggets and the Philadelphia 76ers — to complete the sign-and-trade deal, per league sources.

Thompson, 34, has spent his entire career with Golden State, winning four NBA championships and making five All-Star teams.

He played 77 games last season, averaging 17.9 points, 3.3 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game. Thompson’s 268 3-pointers made ranked fourth in the NBA last season.

The Warriors acknowledged Thompson’s “incredible and legendary contributions” during his time with the team.

“The amount of joy and happiness that Klay provided Warriors fans, Bay Area natives and Dub Nation supporters all around the world has been immense and cannot be minimized,” the Warriors said in a statement Monday . “His penchant for delivering in pressurized situations on the biggest stage, including many Game 6 heroics, has helped define a career.”

His decision closes the chapter on a months-long saga surrounding Thompson and the Warriors front office. Golden State had no communication with its star guard as the negotiating period opened, per team and league sources.

The Warriors, after other business, wanted to circle back and negotiate with Thompson, but he wasn’t interested in being a willing secondary priority in their summer plan, with his side feeling that the Warriors’ interest in a reunion was disingenuous.

This split is a major stunner across the league, given the deep history between the Warriors and Thompson. It had been trending in this direction for a couple of seasons, as Thompson’s extension talks stalled, his role shifted and the team failed to make the playoffs. The Warriors drafted (Moses Moody, Brandin Podziemski) and extended (Jordan Poole) possible replacements under him and he never felt reciprocated love from management about his firm place in the franchise’s plans, league sources said.

Kawakami: The perfect and poetic timing of Klay Thompson's 13 seasons of splash

That continued into this summer. The Warriors maintained an outward desire to keep Thompson as part of the core, but they made it clear it’d have to come at the right price, in the right role and he’d have to wait for the right time.

The Los Angeles Lakers and LA Clippers were also expected to be strong suitors at the outset of free agency.

“Klay’s legacy will live on forever and we look forward to the day we can retire his #11 jersey at Chase Center, where he will join a host of Warriors immortals, including those who helped shape this recent dynasty— himself included,” the Warriors said. “We thank Klay for his contributions and wish him the best as another chapter in his journey is written.”

A star turn in Dallas?

For most of the past decade, the Mavericks were known as the team that chased star free agents and then failed to get them, retreating to backup plans and promising future pursuits behind false bravado that couldn’t quite hide the embarrassment.

That was another front office pitching an entirely different team. Now it’s Luka Dončić and Kyrie Irving helming the team. Now it’s Nico Harrison leading the front office. And now the Mavericks have signed a free agent who might be the biggest star name acquisition in franchise history: Klay Thompson.

Thompson is no longer the four-time champion who helped transform the sport’s understanding of space, who turned quarters into shooting exhibitions. He has declined as a defender, which poses major questions to a team that’s built around two superstar guards who don’t dazzle on that end. But Thompson remains a star both by name and production: 20 points and 40 percent shooting behind the arc across his past two seasons.

Dallas traded skill and shooting for physicality and defense during last season’s run to the Finals. Now, they’re trying to strike the balance between those two.

It’s also true that Thompson’s decision to leave Golden State, the only home he’s had for his 13 years within the league, seemed to be influenced by his desire not to be compared to the player he once was. Dallas offers him the opportunity to win and be himself without the focus being shined upon him after every poor performance. Just look at how Irving has reshaped his public image.

There remain aspects of the deal to be worked out, which currently involves Josh Green being moved to the Charlotte Hornets . The negotiations involved with the Golden State Warriors, however, are ongoing. Dallas must find common ground to reach a sign-and-trade that would bring Thompson here.

It’s a riskier win-now move than others Dallas could have made. The front office could have simply doubled down on what brought this squad to the Finals last season. But in convincing someone like Thompson to choose them, it did send one clear signal: This franchise no longer resembles that old one you knew. —  Tim Cato, Mavericks staff writer

What’s next for the Lakers?

With Thompson ending up in Dallas, the Lakers have now struck out with all three of the prime candidates LeBron James was reportedly willing to take a pay cut for: Thompson, James Harden and Jonas Valančiūnas .

DeMar DeRozan is another name to watch as a potential non-taxpayer midlevel exception candidate for the Lakers that James would be willing to take less for, league sources confirmed. ESPN was first to report. Outside of DeRozan, it’s unclear which players would reach the threshold of prompting James to take a sizable pay cut.

Gary Trent Jr. and Buddy Hield are elite shooters who would improve L.A.’s floor spacing. They’re also players the Lakers have pursued in multiple trade configurations in recent seasons. Trent is a client of Klutch Sports, the agency that also represents James, Anthony Davis , Cam Reddish and Bronny James . Hield is a former client of Lakers vice president of basketball operations and general manager Rob Pelinka, who is a former agent.

The Lakers are expected to have 15 players with guaranteed contracts once James re-signs. To sign a player to the non-taxpayer midlevel exception, or even to a minimum contract, they will have to execute a consolidation trade that creates an empty roster spot. —  Jovan Buha, Lakers staff writer
