How to travel from Phuket to Koh Samui

phuket to koh samui travel time

Going 140 miles from Phuket to Koh Samui is about going from the largest island in Thailand and the gateway to the Andaman region across to the hub of the Thai Gulf in the east. The two destinations reign among the most coveted places in the whole of the Land of Smiles, touting more gorgeous beaches and opulent hotel resorts than you can shake your khao soi at.

These days, the journey from one to the other should be quite simple. There are direct domestic flight links that can help you do it in a single morning, but also boat and bus combos that are very reliable and leave multiple times per day.

Nothing is Quicker Than Flying: Plane to Koh Samui

Bangkok Airways plane on Koh Samui Airport

Time – 55 minutes flight time Price – $80-200 Comfort – 5/5

There’s no faster way to swap the beaches of Phuket for the beaches of Koh Samui than by taking to the air. In just 55 minutes of flight time, you can be cruising down into the Thai Gulf, which means you’re looking at total travel times of a little over three hours when you factor in waits at Phuket Airport before takeoff and transfers to your hotel on the Samui side.

Booking flights on this route is made very simple by the fact that there’s basically only one airline on offer. Cue Bangkok Airways. They actually own and run Koh Samui Airport, so have a bit of a monopoly on services in and out of the gulf from all across Thailand. That’s not a bad thing, though – the flight service is a premium one, with seats that have a bit more legroom than your average short-hauler, plus onboard meal service as standard.

In a hurry to crack a coconut on Chaweng Beach over in Samui? Book yourself onto one of the daily flights across from Phuket with Bangkok Airways, which takes under an hour.

The real downside of flying has to be the price. You’re spending a minimum of about $80 on tickets, but that can soar to over $150 each way at key times. Watch out for the months between January and March especially, as that’s when the high season in the Andaman crosses over with the high season in the Thai Gulf, putting prices at their very peak.

Bangkok to Phuket by plane

Because this is such a popular route between two of Thailand’s major beach resort areas, you can expect up to six direct departures daily. They all leave from Phuket International Airport (HKT) and arrive at Koh Samui Airport (USM). Transfers to and from both of those, in addition to your plane tickets themselves, can be booked online via 12GoAsia before you even arrive in Southeast Asia. Easy.

Going by Bus and Speedboat to Koh Samui

4 Lomprayah Speedboats anchored with islands in background

Time – 6 h 15 min Price – $39 Comfort – 4/5

The quickest overland way out of Phuket to Koh Samui comes courtesy of the speedboat operator Lomprayah. They run the biggest fleet of fast ferries over on the gulf side of Thailand, and now sell tickets that include transfers to the port in Surat Thani from Phuket itself. There are just one or two departures on offer each day on this route, usually leaving around 9am or even earlier for arrivals in the mid-afternoon.

Lomprayah runs the speedboats from Surat Thani on the Thai mainland to Koh Samui’s western coast, and now sells combo tickets that include transfers from Phuket to the port.

Trips begin at the Lomprayah Office in Phuket. Big, double-decker buses with air conditioning run from there straight over to the mainland and then across to Donsak Pier. That’s where you’ll transfer onto the speedboat, which takes roughly 45 minutes to reach Na Thon Pier on the western side of the island. The ride is relatively comfortable the whole way, but remember that speedboats can be wobbly when the waves are bigger. It’s also possible to pay a little extra to get a shared minivan for the first part of the trip. They tend to be a touch quicker than the big buses and can pick you up at the door of your hotel in the morning.

Phuket to Koh Phangan by bus and ferry

You can expect this trip through the jungle-covered heartlands of the nation and then over the water to Samui itself to take a lot longer than flying – something like six or seven hours is normal. On the plus side, it also costs about half the price. Tickets bought online via 12GoAsia can be had for around the $40 mark.

Phuket to Koh Samui by Bus and Ferry

Seatran Discovery Ferry

Time – 7.5 hours+ Price – $19 Comfort – 3/5

If you don’t mind being at sea for a little longer then you could swap the speedboat connection for a normal ferry. These take more than double the time to get to Samui from the mainland port, which adds at least an hour to the trip. They can also take longer to get going because they carry over 100 people at any one time, so boarding and disembarking is a bit of a chore. Combine all that with what it takes to travel across Thailand by bus beforehand and you’re looking at total journey times of over 7.5 hours.

Bargain tickets for under $20 are on offer to travelers willing to take the slower boats out of Donsak Pier to Koh Samui.

That’s the bad news. The good news is that this is almost certainly going to be the cheapest way to travel from Phuket to Koh Samui. Early-bird bookers can sometimes score tickets for the $19 mark, which should leave more baht for those chilled Chang beers down on Chaweng Beach once you arrive. The lowest rates of all tend to be with Seatran, who operate large, double-deck ferries with indoor and outdoor spaces.

Seatran Discovery Seating

Again, you can pick between large VIP buses and smaller 12-person minivans for the overland portion of this journey. We’d probably recommend the latter since they don’t cost all that much more, are generally more comfortable, and – crucially – include a pick-up at a hotel anywhere in Phuket on the morning of departure. Talking of departure…leaving times tend to be very early to make it to the pier in time to connect with the boats. You’ll likely need to be up and ready to go by 8am.

The Most Expensive Option: Travel by Taxi and Boat

Krabi to Koh Samui by private taxi and ferry

Time – 6-7 hours Price – $200+ Comfort – 4/5

You don’t  have  to get a shared minivan or bus to connect with the boats at Donsak Pier for rides to Samui island. There are plenty of private taxi operators willing to whizz you over from Phuket, a ride that takes the best part of five hours. You’ll pay over $200 for just the drive, but it’s worth considering if you’re traveling as a group and can share the cost of the trip between four or five people.

The great thing here is that a taxi will be a whole load more comfortable than the shared buses, and you’ll have the freedom to stop whenever you like along the way. They do pick-ups at whatever part of Phuket you nominate to begin the day and can be ordered to match up with specific boat departures, no matter if you want to get the high-speed services with Lomprayah or the slower (and cheaper) Seatran ferries.

Hop from Phuket’s glitzy hotels and pumping party towns to Koh Samui in the Thai Gulf to ensure you keep your Land of Smiles adventure packed with idyllic sands and salt-washed beach bars. This guide reveals the best ways to make the 140-mile journey, from the uber-fast flights with Bangkok Airways to overland routes on buses and boats. Bon, voyage!

Want to know how to get from Phuket to Koh Samui?

There are currently 2 different ways to travel from Phuket to Ko Samui. The fastest option would be to book a flight to Koh Samui from Phuket international airport and you’ll be there in under 1 hour.

If you want a cheaper alternative, there is always the option to travel by land and then take a ferry or speedboat. This option is popular among tourists and travelers because its affordable, comfortable and you’ll get to experience amazing views as the route passes through the scenic landscapes in Krabi province.

Phuket to Koh Samui – Best Option

Route: Phuket → Surat Thani → Koh Samui

The most popular option to travel from Phuket to Koh Samui is the all inclusive bus + ferry combo ticket. You don’t need to worry about any in between transfers as the bus takes you directly to the ferry that goes to Koh Samui. You can → reserve tickets online here which is advisable as these tickets often sell out.

*Note: regular buses stop in Talad Kaset bus terminal or Surat Thani train station which are both 1 hour drive to the ferry pier.

Phuket to Koh Samui

How to get to Koh Samui from Phuket

Phuket to Koh Samui is a popular route for many tourists and travelers that want to visit the 2 largest and most popular Thai islands. Direct flights are the fastest and most convenient travel option which will get you there in under 1 hour. There’s a few more options to get from Phuket to Koh Samui and all require taking a ferry or speedboat for the last part of the journey.

Phuket to Koh Samui Travel Planning

Bus + ferry combo.

The bus + ferry combo tickets are an easy and hassle free way to get from Phuket to Koh Samui at an affordable price. Lomprayah is arguably the most popular ferry company offering bus+ferry all inclusive tickets. This option takes you directly from Phuket to the pier in Surat Thani and the ferry or speedboat takes you to Koh Samui. No planning required and no transfers in between, just easy and stress free.

If you book your tickets online, my advise is to be at the meeting point (this will be provided upon online booking) an hour ahead of departure so you can do the check-in, make sure everything is in order and also secure a spot for your luggage in the bus storage compartment.

The bus journey from Phuket to Donsak pier in Surat Thani city is between 4.5 hours and 6.5 hours and the ferry or speedboat will be 2 hours or 3 hours. These travel durations vary because it will depend which option you choose. You can view all options, → schedules and reserve tickets here.

Note: the meeting point will be either in front of the Lomprayah office or at Phuket Bus Terminal 2. Both of these are located close to Phuket old town.

With a travel time of under 1 hour and daily flights between the 2 islands, air travel is the fastest and most convenient way to reach Koh Samui from Phuket. Flights depart from Phuket international airport and are offered by Bangkok Air as they own the airport in Koh Samui. This monopoly means that tickets do tend to be a bit expensive and a 1 way ticket will cost $100 to $150 or more depending on seasonality.

However, if you’re on a short vacation and want to make the most our of your time in Thailand, then flying from Phuket to Koh Samui is the best option as it will save you a lot of travel time. → You can check flights for your travel dates here.

Bus or minivan and Ferry (independently)

You could also do the trip independently. Meaning you’ll book the bus tickets and boat tickets separately and handle all the logistics and transfers.

There are regular buses departing from Phuket terminal 2 and the travel duration is around 6 hours. Tickets cost ฿350 ($10). The journey ends in Surat Thani either at the train station or at Talad Kaset bus terminal. Keep in mind, there are no regular buses that go to Donsak pier which is where the ferries to Koh Samui depart and is a 1 hour drive from both the bus and train station in Surat Thani.

If you arrive in Surat Thani bus terminal, it’s a chaotic place. Loads of touts will swarm you and try to sell you tours, and just keep asking “where you goin”. We know because we’ve passed through this terminal a few times and its really tiring after a long bus ride. Just ignore them and walk inside the terminal. There are booths inside where you can buy the ferry tickets which will also include transport to the pier. However, these booths are just resellers and tickets will have a markup.Ferry tickets can also be purchased online and most include transport from the bus station or train station in Surat Thani to the pier in Donsak. You can → check schedules and availability here.

Taxi/Transfer and Ferry

Similar to the previous option, this journey follows the same course. If you’re traveling as a group and splitting the cost, this could be a way to travel part of the journey privately in the comfort of either a minivan or a car. The option you choose will depend on your group size.

You will need to book a transfer from Phuket to Donsak pier where most of the ferries depart from. If you’re traveling via Songserm or Lomprayah ferries you will need to go to Laem Thuat pier which is a few kilometers west from the main pier in Donsak.

While a transfer from Phuket to the piers in Surat Thani isn’t going to be cheap and will cost around $120 to $150, it’s a reasonable price considering it’s a 4 hour drive. And if you’re traveling as a group, the price is quite affordable after splitting the cost. → Click here to check transfer options and prices.

For the ferry tickets you can either wing it and just show up at one of the piers and buy tickets if they are available. But if you want peace of mind it would be best to reserve your seats in advance. → You can check ferry schedules and availability here.

Where do Ferries Arrive in Koh Samui

When coming from Phuket to Koh Samui most ferries dock at Nathon pier and a few at Lipa Noi pier. Both piers are on the west coast of Koh Samui.

Popular tourist areas are located along Koh Samui’s North East coast. These include Chaweng, Lamai, Bo Phut and Choeng Mon. From your port of entry it will be a 30 minute to 1 hour drive to your hotel depending where you’re staying.

Chaweng and Lamai are arguably the most popular areas in Koh Samui and are both around a 40 minute drive from the pier. Taxis are a convenient option but you’ll need to negotiate a price as drivers rarely use the meter in Koh Samui. Songtaews are the local buses and are pick up vans fitted with benches in the back. These vans travel around the ring road that wraps around Koh Samui. You can use them to reach your hotel but make sure to tell the driver where you’re going and ask for the price before hopping on.

Where to stay in Koh Samui

The north eastern portion of Koh Samui is the most popular part of the island. This part of the island is home to the tourist areas Chaweng, Lamai, Choeng Mon, BoPhut and Maenam. All areas are within a 30 minute drive from each other. However they are all different and offer different things.

Below is an overview for each popular area in Koh Samui. This should give you an idea what to expect. Under each section are 3 TOP recommendations for places to stay for any budget.

Want a detailed where to stay guide? → then read this

Chaweng is arguably the best area to stay in Koh Samui. At least it is definitely the most popular, that’s for sure. Here you’ll be close to the largest concentration of restaurants, beach clubs, accommodation and the liveliest nightlife scene in Koh Samui. While Chaweng is the most developed part of Koh Samui, it does have one of the best beaches on the island with white sand and crystal clear waters.

Best places to stay for any Budget in Chaweng ⤵

Lamai is a town that sits next to Chaweng. It’s not as developed and consequentially not as busy. Also accommodation prices here are significantly cheaper. In Lamai there’s also a large choice of restaurants, bars and is lively. However it still remains rather laid back offering a more relaxed atmosphere. Lamai beach is a continuation of Chaweng beach and is just as goregeous.

Best places to stay for any Budget in Lamai ⤵

Choeng Mon is a small mostly local town on the north eastern tip. It’s a nice place that combines tourist amenities with local Thai charm. While there isn’t much of a nightlife scene, there are quite a few restaurants. It’s a popular area with families especially for kids the shallow beach is perfect.

Best places to stay for any Budget in Choeng Mon ⤵

Bo Phut is the trendiest and coolest part of Koh Samui. Here, old traditional houses have been turned into gorgeous boutique hotels and there’s upscale waterfront restaurants and trendy beach clubs. And interestingly, these touristy things are all mixed in with local living as local fishermen and their families live here. In short, Bo Phut combines local charm with luxury. There is also a really good local market that sets up every evening in Bo Phut.

Best places to stay for any Budget in Bo Phut ⤵

Maenam is a little further west from BoPhut. There’s a handful of accommodation dotted around the down and a few resorts on the beach. It’s a nice beach that rarely gets busy during the day. But is quite popular with locals in the evenings. If you have small kids, the beach isn’t the best as the sand slopes down and the water quickly gets deep. There isn’t many dining options in Maenam but BoPhut is just a 20 minute walk away.

How to Travel from Phuket to Koh Samui

The distance between Phuket and Koh Samui is about 345 kilometers (214 miles). There are three main ways to travel from Phuket to Koh Samui:

  • Direct flights (recommended)
  • Bus + ferry
  • Private transfer (car) + ferry

Discover real reviews of Highlights Travel Family 's best-rated service across trusted platforms.

1. Direct Flights (Easiest and Fastest)

  • Cost: from 3,172 THB (US$95) p/p
  • Journey time: 1 hour

This is the most recommended way to get to Koh Samui from Phuket.

Phuket has two direct flights to Samui International Airport (USM) daily, supplied by Bangkok Airlines, at 1pm and 4:30pm.

The Samui airport is only about 3 kilometers (1.8 miles) to Chaweng Beach, one of Koh Samui's most popular beaches. That's only 8 minutes' driving.

Check the sample itineraries for Thailand tours:  Top 5 Thailand Itineraries for 10 Days .

Is there a cheaper flight from Phuket to Koh Samui?

No. Currently only Bangkok Airlines has direct flights. A cheaper flight from Phuket to Surat Thani (US$65) + airport–port transfer (~US$20) + ferry (US$8-18) is no cheaper. The total cost is about the same as taking a direct flight (US$95), but much more time-consuming (the whole journey takes 7 hours).

2. Car (Private Transfer)

  • Cost: from 6,672 THB (US$200) per car
  • Journey time: 6–8 hours

You can book a taxi online for the transfer very easily. This option is most likely to be chosen for its door-to-door convenience or because there is no connecting flight available from Phuket to Koh Samui. You will be transported from your hotel in Phuket or Phuket airport to your hotel in Koh Samui. Short stops are counted in the journey time and can be had at your convenience.

3. Bus + Ferry (Cheapest)

  • Cost: from 600 THB (US$18) p/p
  • Journey time: 9½ hours

Phuket Bus Terminal 1 has minivans "to Koh Samui" from 8am. A minivan will take you to the Surat Thani ferry (included in the bus price) for the crossing to Nathon Pier in Koh Samui.

Though it is the cheapest way, some disadvantages come with it. It is relatively uncomfortable, awkward, and time-consuming, making it "the backpackers' option". The minivan doesn't always leave on schedule, and the driver will collect passengers on the road, which may take extra time. The free luggage allowance is 1 item per person, and you will be asked to pay for excess luggage.

To recap, a direct flight from Phuket to Koh Samui takes approximately 55 minutes, not including check-in and waiting times at the airport. While this is the quickest and most convenient option, it is also the most expensive and misses out on the beautiful overland and seascapes.

  • Time-saving, with the flight typically lasting around 55 minutes.
  • Convenient, as it avoids the hassle of multiple transfers.
  • Often the most expensive option.
  • Environmental impact is higher compared to other travel options.
  • You might miss out on the scenic beauty of overland and sea routes.

Ideal for: Travellers who prioritize time and convenience over cost, such as businesstravellerss or those on a short holiday.

2. Bus and Ferry

A more budget-friendly and scenic option is to take a combined bus and ferry journey. Several companies operate this route, with tickets often including both bus and ferry fares. Companies like Lomprayah and Seatran offer combined bus and ferry tickets. The journey starts with a bus ride from Phuket to Surat Thani or Donsak Pier, followed by a ferry to Koh Samui. These companies typically have morning and afternoon departures.

The combined bus and ferry journey typically takes between 6 and 8 hours. This includes a 4-5 hour bus ride from Phuket to Surat Thani or Donsak Pier, and a 1.5-2 hour ferry ride to Koh Samui. The schedules are usually well-coordinated, minimizing wait times. This option gives you a chance to enjoy the scenic beauty of Thailand’s landscapes and seascapes, making the journey as enjoyable as the destination. However, the long travel duration and the need for multiple transfers might not suit everyone.

  • Economical and eco-friendlier than flying.
  • You get to enjoy the beautiful Thai landscapes and seascapes.
  • It’s a long journey, typically taking around 6-8 hours.
  • Multiple transfers can be tiring and confusing for some.

Ideal for: Budget travellers, backpackers, and those who enjoy overland and sea travel.

3. Taxi or Private Transfer and Ferry

For those who value comfort and a personalized experience, private taxi transfers from Phuket to the ferry port, followed by a ferry to Koh Samui, could be the best choice. Private transfers can be scheduled at any time of the day. After the road journey to Donsak Pier, there’s a ferry ride to Koh Samui.

Private transfers and ferry can take around 5 to 7 hours, depending on traffic conditions and the time you spend waiting for the ferry. This includes a 4-5 hour taxi ride from Phuket to Donsak Pier, and a 1.5-2 hour ferry ride to Koh Samui. While this option is more expensive than the bus and ferry route, it offers a more comfortable and personalized travel experience. The flexible schedule is a major advantage, especially for those traveling in groups or with family.

  • Offers privacy and comfort.
  • The schedule can be flexible based on your preferences.
  • More expensive than the bus option.
  • Still requires a ferry transfer.

Ideal for: Travelers who value comfort and flexibility, such as families with children or older travelers.

Tips and Aspects to Consider

Booking in Advance: For all options, booking in advance is highly recommended, especially during peak season (December – March and July – August).

Travel Insurance: Ensure that your travel insurance covers all modes of transport you’ll be using.

Luggage: For the bus and ferry option, consider packing light as you’ll need to handle your luggage during transfers.

Weather: The weather can impact ferry services. During the monsoon season (October – November), sea travel can be rough, and services may be cancelled.

In terms of travel times , it’s worth noting that delays can happen due to traffic, weather conditions, or unexpected situations. Therefore, it’s always wise to allow some extra time in your schedule.

Regardless of your chosen mode of transport, remember to stay hydrated, carry some snacks, and enjoy the journey. For some itineraries stops can happen less frequently. Be aware of that, especially if you are stomach sensitive. Each travel option offers a unique experience and a different perspective of Thailand’s rich culture and breathtaking beauty. Whether you’re soaking in the views from a ferry, engaging with locals on a bus, or marveling at the bird’s eye view from a plane, the journey from Phuket to Koh Samui is sure to be a memorable part of your Thai adventure.

Phuket To Koh Samui

Phuket to Koh Samui

No two Thai islands are the same; this is why you will experience a refreshing yet equally alluring contrast when travelling from Phuket to Koh Samui .

While the former has all the charms of being by the Andaman Sea, the latter reveals the best of the Gulf of Thailand .

Phuket to Koh Samui, Flights, Trains & Ferry Times, Distance & Prices

There are several ways you can go about the travel; one is to take a bus from Phuket’s town centre and head to the Laem Thuat pier located in Donsak. From here, hop on a catamaran which takes you directly to Koh Samui. The trip will take around 6.5 hours.

Another option is to follow the same bus route, but from Donsak you board a cheaper ferry to Koh Samui. Since it’s cheaper, there may be unexpected changes, so be prepared for that, as well as around 7 hours of travel time.

There is also a bus line that services the Phuket to Surat Thani route, which takes 4.5 hours. Once in Surat Thani, go to the Donsak pier and then purchase a bus and ferry combination ticket to take you to Koh Samui .

If you take a government-operated bus, keep in mind that they may take a detour to Krabi to pick up passengers, and this may add a considerable amount of time to the journey. Additionally, all government-operated buses are mandated to pick up passengers on Saturdays and Sundays, so if you are travelling on these days, expect the trip to take a little longer.

If you have a car, you can also drive from Phuket to Koh Samui aboard the Saphan Thepkasattri bridge which connects the northernmost part of Phuket to the province of Phang Nga. However, if you’d rather take your car with you instead of drive it, larger ferries can accommodate vehicles, and you can find them at the Donsak pier.

Phuket to Koh Samui

Phuket to Koh Samui

Best options, other options, phuket to koh samui schedule, how to get from phuket to koh samui.

Think that all of the Thai islands are the same? Wrong! Say ‘goodbye’ to the karst formations and oceanic vastness of the Andaman Coast and get some privacy with a glamorous touch on arguably the most beautiful and stylish island of the Gulf, Samui. Crystal clear waters and idyllic beaches, lush tropical greenery and modern ‘island style’ shopping molls, fancy jewellery shops and colourful local markets – you name it – Samui has it all. No wonder that the third-largest island in Thailand, Samui has become popular amongst both luxurious holiday makers and backpackers on a budget who can each find the experience, accommodation, activities and entertainment that they come for. Whether it is candle-lit dinners on post-card beaches, wild and adventurous partying through the night, treks through forests and jungles or days spent oiled up on the beach, Koh Samui is the right choice to get it.

Depending on the way you travel, your journey from Phuket to Samui can take anywhere from 6½ hrs to literally the whole day. To ensure a seamless and confortable trip, it is a good idea to opt for a joint bus+ferry ticket offered by Lomprayah or Phantip 1970 .

Lomprayah operates the fastest – and the most expensive – service from Phuket to Koh Samui. There are two buses a day at 7am and 10am. Buses depart from Lomprayah’s office in Phuket Town and go straight to Laem Thuat pier in Donsak, where passengers board the catamaran heading to Koh Samui. The whole trip takes about 6½ hrs, including ¾ hr from Donsak to Nathon pier on Koh Samui. Tickets cost THB 1250 per person.

Phantip 1970 is the main budget operator between Phuket and Samui. The company offers quite a comfortable journey at a reasonable price (THB 450 per person). They provide standard AC buses with a toilet onboard and make at least one pit stop for a meal at a gas station with a number of forecourt shops. Normally the buses are ok, though some unexpected unpleasant surprises (e.g. an older back-up bus instead of the usual one) do sometimes happen. The bus departs daily at 9am and heads to Donsak without calling to Suratthani. Phantip uses a slower Seatran Discovery ferry which covers the distance between the company’s pier in Donsak and the Seatran Bangrak pier on Koh Samui in about 1½ hours. Though Phantip declares that the whole trip takes 6½ hrs, it sometimes lasts longer, and instead of arriving at 3.30pm be ready to reach Samui in the evening.

Tip: To be on the safe side, book your accommodation on Samui in advance to avoid cruising the dark villages in a hope to find a decent place to stay if you do arrive later than expected.

You can also take a bus from Phuket to Suratthani . The trip lasts about 4½ hrs and costs THB 230 per person. In Suratthani head to the pier in Donsak by yourself or buy a bus+ferry ticket from Suratthani to Samui with Lomprayah , Seatran Discovery or Phantip 1970 . The cheapest one will cost you THB 250 (Phantip 1970, 3½ hrs). At the end of the day it is not going to be much cheaper but it will be much longer for sure. Note that governmental buses sometimes detour to Krabi on their way to Suratthani to pick up passengers, which makes the whole journey considerably longer.

Note: The government obliges all the interprovincial operators to pick up passengers on their way on Saturday and Sunday. If you are travelling during the weekend, be ready for a longer trip.

Samui is a perfect starting point to explore its two neighbours, party rocking Koh Phangan and diving crazy Koh Tao. A number of ferries ply the route between the three brother islands daily. The service offered differs in trip length, cost and level of comfort, so you can easily choose what suits your taste and budget best. Samui, Koh Phangan and Koh Tao all differ in size, atmosphere and activities on offer. Visit all three of them to have a truly unforgettable and diverse vacation.

Koh Samui is large and you will need a way to get around easily, since doing it on foot is very limiting and uncomfortably hot, but there are many far better options available depending on how you like to get around.

Taxis (songtaews) are a great way to travel long distances on the island, or if you want to go out partying and know you shouldn't drive yourself around. While they are convenient and can get you everywhere from anywhere, this is probably the most expensive option, as you can expect to pay between 50 and 100 THB a person which adds up quickly.

Motorcycles are a fantastic way to get around. Motorcycles (and bicycles, too) can be rented from almost every resort on the island. Rentals are cheap, petrol is cheap, and they give you the freedom to go just about anywhere you want to go as you explore the island’s natural wonders. A word of caution though, you will undoubtedly see many tourists about with bandages and scrapes on their arms and legs, almost all of the time these are caused by accidents on scooters. You should be able to find a scooter for less than 200 THB a day. Most of the rental shops insist that you leave your passport behind. While this is a bit unnerving, it is also standard practice throughout Thailand, so be very careful with your scooter if you want to avoid any trouble.

Where to stay

Hat Chaweng is packed with all kinds of accommodation to suit any budget. It is the epicentre of the action, and the northern part of the beach can be quite noisy. Hat Lamai is another popular choice attracting holiday-makers both with its long stretch of white sand and a good choice of restaurants, bars and shops along the main road. In between the two beaches hides a little gem of Crystal Bay with – as the name suggests – crystal clear waters embraced with imposing boulders of a small bay. Hat Bang Rak (or Big Buddha Beach) leis relatively close to the airport (you may hear some noise), but the white sand of its western part compensate for it. Bo Phut is of particular interest not because of the beach but thanks to its trendy boutique hotels peppering Fishermen’s Village where strong Chinese influence can be felt even today. Families often opt for Mae Nam with its gentle sea. The West Coast is not a good choice if you come for the sea, but the sunsets are exceptional there.

Tip: Do not spend all your time on Samui on one and the same beach; try at least a couple of them and you will be rewarded with the diversity which this island has to offer.

Besides usual diving, snorkelling, kayaking, jungle-trekking and waterfalls find a couple of hours to visit the only rum distillery in Thailand, Magic Alambic . They produce Caribbean rum with a variety of natural flavours (obviously, they have coconut rum, too). They offer tasting sessions and sell rum, too (600-700 THB per 700ml bottle). Located in Baan Bang Kao. Travellers with the little ones in tow will love Paradise Park , which is a considerably large petting zoo, which is also one of the best viewpoints on the island.

Top airline flying from koh samui to phuket city.

On a 45 mins flight to Koh Samui from Bangkok we were served delicious shrimp pad thai and hot tea. The flight crew did an awesome job serving a full flight.

Seats are tight and leg room so small. We had deep impressions under kneecap from the seat in front. A sign that Bangkok Airways is fully aware how small it is built is the cutout in the table. Very uncomfortable for people in size 1.80 m or more.

This is my 2nd flight with this airline. Service is very good. I was surprised they served a meal on such a short flight. The airplane landed so smooth that most people were unaware the plane had just landed. About half of the people on board applauded.

The staff were helpful and very pleasant. The food is tasty and there’s plenty of water provided. Flights are well air conditioned.

The food was inedible- The rice was hard as a rock The chicken was hard and could not chew Horrible meal. Don’t even serve it. It was an insult to think that you would have even served it.

I fly Bangkok Air regularly. Could say I am loyal to their airlines and program. The only two comments of critique I could offer is (1) using the credits from accumulated miles is not as streamlines as some of the other airlines programs I am or have been a member of... and have lost opportunity to use them before expiration. (2) Sometimes, the plane is boarded / un-boarded with a service bus that has to navigate the airport and adds unwelcomed overhead time (especially during de-boarding). If have checked luggage this is transparent; if only have carry-on will slow your departure from Suvarnabhumi by ~20 minutes or more. Otherwise, a fine airline.

Should be better if they provide more decent snacks. Also my flight took off was delayed by 15 minutes. I'd like them to improve to more punctual timing.

Bangkok Air has been hit with the challenge of flying during COVID like everyone else. Still, they are early to get started again and offer normal services when possible. It is nice to have a lounge for all passengers vs. going to gate and sitting to stare out at planes.

‘The White Lotus’ Thailand is next. These hotels do it on a budget.

HBO’s hottest hotel group, “The White Lotus,” is expanding to Thailand — on screen at least. The location for season 3 has been confirmed , and Bloomberg reported in January that loose-lipped industry insiders say filming is taking place at the Four Seasons Resort Koh Samui , the Anantara Mai Khao Phuket Villas and a still-undisclosed hotel in Bangkok. The network has stayed quiet on specific hotels.

The news is a boon for Four Seasons and the Thailand-based Anantara group; the show’s previous two seasons, set in Hawaii and Sicily , have proved to turbocharge travelers’ interest in their already popular respective locales. After the seasons aired, bookings soared at Four Seasons Resort Maui at Wailea and the Four Seasons’ San Domenico Palace in Taormina.

It’s safe to say that these Thai resorts can expect a similar uptick in reservations after season 3 premieres in 2025. But living out the White Lotus fantasy isn’t within every traveler’s reach. One night at the Four Seasons in Koh Samui will cost you at least $1,400. And while at $660 per night, starting rates at the Anantara in Phuket are a fair bit lower — they’re still not exactly a steal for anyone but the most deep-pocketed visitors.

Nightly rates at Thailand’s big-brand luxury resorts can often be on par with those in Europe or the United States, but a burgeoning ecosystem of local hospitality groups and independently owned hotels offers many of the same five-star perks at a fraction of the price. For about $180, the average rate of a night in a three-star hotel room in Miami Beach, you can book a villa with a private pool and round-the-clock service on the beach in Koh Samui.

Here are six Thailand beach retreats offering five-star luxury on a Best Western budget.

Meliá Koh Samui

On palm-pinned Choeng Mon Beach, a few bays east of the Four Seasons Koh Samui, sits the first Thai outpost of Spanish hotel brand Meliá . Still fresh from its opening in 2020, this family-friendly resort aims for midmarket rather than high-end, but that doesn’t make it any less worthy of its five-star label. Rooms, starting at $181 per night, riff on the island’s maritime past with nautical rope decor and licks of ocean-blue, while its top-level suites occupy reclaimed teakwood barges. Even the standard rooms open to a bubble bath on their balcony, and suites with either a private pool or direct access to a more than 2,200-foot pool that meanders through the resort’s manicured tropical gardens have the option to have breakfast delivered in a floating basket (if that’s your thing).

The Surin, Phuket

Rumors circulated that Amanpuri, one of Phuket’s ritziest beach retreats, would be one of the film sets for the third season of “The White Lotus.” They were ultimately dispelled, but the resort remains a firm favorite with wealthy travelers. With rates often shooting to well over $1500 per night, this is territory for the privileged few — but insiders know that the Surin next door offers similar perks and the same palm-tufted setting at a fraction of the cost. This beachfront spot is the only resort offering access to Amanpuri’s semiprivate Pansea Beach, one of Phuket’s prettiest. Pitched up among the treetops, the Surin’s airy deluxe cottages start at $220 per night and overlook the Andaman Sea from their snug, parasol-shaded balconies. The resort is part of White Lotus lore, too: it was here that creator Mike White first hinted at Thailand being the show’s next location.

Cape Kudu, Koh Yao Noi

A short speedboat-hop from Phuket, the island of Koh Yao Noi feels like a trip back in time. Its palm-fringed beaches remain blissfully free of tourist crowds, and sleepy coconut farms — not shopping malls or amusement parks — still cover most of its jungled inland. Cape Kudu , on the sunrise-facing east coast, is one of the island’s chicest places to stay. Its breezy rooms and villas come furnished with lots of linen, sun-bleached woods and wickerwork; a similarly laid-back theme dresses the spa, restaurant and beanbag-lined infinity pool. With low-season rates from May to October starting at $122 per night, this small resort offers excellent bang for your baht. And those dazzling views over Phang Nga Bay’s dramatic karst formations? They’re free.

The Sarojin, Khao Lak

This resort in the beachside holiday hub of Khao Lak, about an hour north of Phuket, delivers a textbook example of classic Thai hospitality — fresh orchids, jasmine-scented towels and lilting sawatdi ka, or hello, greetings included. The Sarojin ’s rooms are teakwood-clad wonders with spalike bathrooms and heaps of private space, but you’ll probably spend more time in one of the pool cabanas, which are lined with gauzy curtains billowing in the breeze. A powder-sugar beach stretches out in front and is a jumping-off point for kayak trips and sailings on the resort’s charter yacht, which can end with candlelit dinners on a nearby private islet. Rates for garden views start at $180 per night and include leisurely all-day breakfast with sparkling wine served until 6 p.m.

The ShellSea, Krabi

From taxis to cocktails, prices on Thailand’s most popular islands are generally much higher than on the mainland. The beaches, however, can be equally pretty — which makes booking a seafront resort ashore a smart way to cut holiday costs (additionally, you’ll save on boat transfers and plane tickets — flights to Thailand’s island destinations tend to be pricey). One of southern Thailand’s most popular hideouts is Krabi, a string of honey-hued beaches and jungle-cloaked karst formations. The ShellSea resort, a ten-minute drive from postcard-pretty Ao Nang beach, makes for a plush base with suites from $120 per night, a spa and three swimming pools. A hammock-lined private beach hugs part of the resort’s oceanfront, while island-hopping day trips can take you to Phang Nga Bay’s prettiest stretches of sand.

SAii Koh Samui Choengmon

While Koh Samui’s three-mile Chaweng Beach, sits just ten minutes from its doorstep, SAii Koh Samui Choengmon ’s perch on little-developed Hanuman Bay feels a world away from the crowds. Its most affordable room will set you back about $170, but the amenities are anything but cheap. At this all-villa resort, even the entry-level digs open to a generously sized sun deck and private pool, have a tropic-tinged bathroom with rain shower and include bespoke bathroom amenities mixed with your preferred scents. Other perks include complimentary yoga classes every morning, and a pick-and-mix of free snacks to bring back to your room.
