Hike in Picos de Europa Asturias Spain

By Roberto – (Updated Sep 2023)

Los picos de europa.

Picos de Europa, or Peaks of Europe, is one of the most famous Spanish National Parks, and the second biggest Natural Park in Spain . It is also the second most visited (around 2M visitors per year!), after the Teide’s Natural Park in the Canary Islands . The origin of the name appeared centuries ago because mountains in this area were the first European peaks that ships were able to see coming from America to the north of Spain.

However, the most important fact is that it was the first Spanish Natural Park , established in 1918. Spain wanted to commemorate the 1200 birthday of the Battle of Covadonga, which marked the beginning of the Spanish ‘Reconquista’ (reconquest).

Where are they located

The Park is located in the Cantabrian Mountains, in the north of Spain, between the provinces of Asturias, León, and Cantabria. It is a vast green region with prairies, rivers, and medium-high mountains. It offers good hikes, mountain climbing, picturesque views, cider and cheese 🧀 tasting, and much more.

How to get to Picos de Europa

To get there, the best option is to fly to Asturias or Santander’s Airport and then drive to Cangas de Onís or Potes respectively. The drive is around 1h 20min in both cases. Cangas de Onís and Potes are the biggest towns around Los Picos de Europa and are usually known as the entrances to the park. They offer a variety of restaurants and accommodation, and both are worth a visit. Another alternative (that we did) is to stay in smaller and nearby towns.

5-Day road trip and 10 unique places to visit

One can spend one entire month in Los Picos de Europa. There are small towns, churches with history, many hikes, and unique places to visit. But here we share our proposal of 10 essential things to do on a 5-day road trip. We consider that 5-7 days is good enough to discover this territory, and if you have less time, we suggest to stake out another trip which can be done in less time. You can always find other good options on our blog .

visit Timanfaya National Park

1 – Bulnes (Day 1)

From Santander’s Airport, drive straight for 1h 30 min until you reach Poncebos . This is a really small town, but it is necessary to visit to get to Bulnes and also to start Ruta del Cares , which is described in another section of this post.

It is necessary to visit Poncebos because Bulnes doesn’t have a road connection. It is isolated from the rest of the world, and the only two ways to visit it are by doing a hike or using a recently built funicular (cable car). Parking in Poncebos is difficult during peak season.

Bulnes in Asturias Spain photo by Javier González

If you have time, we recommend doing the round trip hike. It’s around 2h 30 min and the views of the valley are truly pleasant. It is easy to do with kids, but be careful with rain. If time is constrained, you can opt for the funicular (cable car). See the schedule here.

Usually, the funicular runs at a 30 min frequency and it takes less than 10 min to go one way. It is quite expensive, +22€ for the round trip or +17€ one way, per person.

2 – Potes (Day 1)

Potes town in Asturias Spain

This small village in Cantabria won the title of Rural Capital of Tourism in 2020. It is a beautiful and well-conserved town that offers lots of gastronomic experiences and dining on terraces. Some traditional specialties include cocido Lebaniego (meat stew with chickpeas), cabrito (goat meat), or local cheese. Another must-try is the cider (sidra in Spanish – remember the name). The town also has hiking stores, in case you forgot something for the following days.

3 – Fuente Dé (Day 2)

Fuente Dé is a town between mountains that offers the longest single-span cable car in Europe. This cable car joins Fuente Dé with El Cable Viewpoint and will take you from an altitude of 1,070 to 1,823 metres . Not bad! It costs 17-18 € round trip and operates Monday to Sunday, from 8:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. Check the official website  here . In addition, you will find a cafeteria on the top.

Picos de Europa Cable Car Asturias Spain

The views from the top are breathtaking , and some people come here just for them, but it is also a magnificent starting point for good hikes.

The most famous routes here are The Horcados Rojos Route and the Ports of Ávila Route. Both take around 4-4.5h (round trip). We tried to finish the first one, but something unexpected happened…

4 – Hike – Horcados Rojos (Day 2)

Even if you don’t plan to do a complete hike, we recommend walking for 30 min from the Cable Viewpoint, until you reach the lakes . You will need hiking boots, water, and sunscreen if you want to complete the rest of the hike. The hike has good instructions you can follow, and it follows a path between rocky mountains.

Picos de Europa National Park in Spain

Once you have started the hike, you can see the Torre of Horcados Rojos in the distance, and you will never lose sight of it. In the middle of the hike, there is a hill that takes 1h to climb, which is why we would classify the hike as Medium Level. Before reaching the Torre of Horcados Rojos, you will also pass by the Cabaña Verónica Refuge on the left, where you can stop in case you need medical assistance or rest.

Hiking Torre de los Horcados Rojos in Asturias Spain

What happened to us? Well, we went to Los Picos de Europa in the first week of December, and while the weather was pretty good, the mountains had snow on the top. Much more snow than we expected. Near the refuge, it started to snow on us, coming down heavier at a fast rate. We saw people with crampons, snow rackets, and fully prepared for a snow hike. We were not 🥲

We decided then to turn around, stopping atop a boulder to eat our sandwiches while the wet snow and wind were blowing around us. At that moment we turned to each other and agreed “glad we turned around when we did!” We eagerly returned to our hotel to have a warm shower, relax, and fill our bellies full of warm soup.

5 – Hike – Ruta del Cares (Day 3)

tour jeep picos de europa

Talking about Los Picos de Europa is associated with this route. The Cares Gorge Trail (Ruta del Cares) is one of the most beautiful hikes in Spain and one of the most visited (if not the most). It joins the towns of Poncebos and Cain, with a lineal journey of 11 km (22 km round trip). The origin of this route dates back to 1900 when more than 500 workers created tunnels with dynamite to reach Caín and to install a hydroelectric plant.

Map of Cares Train or Ruta del Cares in Spain

The trail starts at Poncebos, the same starting point as the hike for Bulnes. We suggest going early (before 10 am) to find parking. Except for at the beginning, the trail is easy and flat and it can easily be done in 5-7h, including stops. However, if you did a hike the previous day (as we did), you will feel that the way back seems to be neverending. Ruta del Cares is a hike to remember, following the River Cares with plenty of goat sightings along the way. For the official website and more information, click here .

Goat in Ruta del Cares in Asturias Spain

If you don’t want to do the round trip of Poncebos-Caín-Poncebos, there is the alternative of doing only one way (Poncebos to Caín or Caín to Poncebos). Some taxis or 4x4s offer a shuttle service to take you back to your car, or if you are driving with 2 cars, you can do it by yourself.

6 – Caín (Day 3)

Caín de Valdeón appears on this list because it shares The Ruta del Cares with Poncebos and because it is a wonderful village in the middle of high peaks. You can find restaurants to refill, drink a ‘tinto’ (red) wine, and enjoy the views of Nature while laying on the grass. Once you are rested, it is time to go back to Poncebos and your hotel.

Ruta del Cares or The Cares Trail in Cain Spain

The next few days will be spent in the western part of the National Park to visit areas around Covadonga. We suggest to stay near Poncebos before heading to Covadonga. Asiego, a super small village, is a good option.

7 – Sanctuary of Covadonga (Day 4)

On this day, we drove from our hotel to Covadonga, famous for its sanctuary. It is said that this is the starting point of the Spanish Reconquista in 722. After the victorious Battle of Covadonga, a virgin was forged in the rock and since then, thousands of pilgrims visit her every year.

Basilica de Covadonga

Even if you are not a devout person, the sanctuary deserves a visit. Also, you can take a bus from Covadonga to the Covadonga Lakes, another gift of Mother Nature.

8 – Covadonga Lakes (Day 4)

Lagos de Covadonga Asturias Spain

How to get to Covadonga Lakes:  To get to Covadonga Lakes, you can walk (only 3 hours) or do as everybody else does, take the bus. Parking is only allowed if you go before 7:00 am. The Lakes open from 7:00 to 21:00 (19:00 in Winter). Important: The Lakes are closed in Summer, Easter, and during some festivities, to ensure environmental conservation.

The bus costs 9€ (round trip) and the bus stop is visible in Covadonga (there is a barrier with a stop and stop buses). Every approx. 20 min there is one bus going up and down. They go up to the Lakes from 9:00 am until 19:30 (17:30 in November and December), and go down until 20:30 (18:30 in November and December). The trip by bus takes 30 minutes.

Bring your own water and food. There are only two restaurants with abusive prices and no water fountains.

Map of Covadonga Lakes or Mapa de Covadonga

Once you arrive, the recommendation is to follow one of two possible routes to explore the area and to see the lakes. We did the shorter trail, and it took us around 1h with many stops. When we first arrived, it was extremely foggy, but the fog disappeared after our hike, letting us see the lakes. Note that because the lakes are positioned high up between mountains, not everybody will be as lucky to see them .

Lagos de Covadonga Asturias Spain

9 – Cangas de Onís – Back to Santander (Days 4-5)

Cangas de Onís is one of the famous towns in Asturias, due to its proximity to Covadonga and also because of its Roman bridge. It is a good place to relax and conclude our trip, after the hiking days. We encourage people to walk around the town and visit the famous bridge (it was originally a Roman bridge which they rebuilt during medieval times), the medieval Iglesia of La Asunción, and the statue of Don Pelayo, “the first king of Spain”.

If you haven’t tried it already, you can try to eat ‘ cachopo ’. This typical food is a sandwich of crispy steak with cheese. To eat some local tapas and cider, we recommend Los Arcos restaurant or El Polesu. You can also stop at some stores to get Cabrales cheese (goat cheese).

Cheese shop in Asturias

On the way back to Santander, depending on your timing, there are amazing beaches to discover in the northern villages. We couldn’t explore the area due to our schedule, but surely we will plan another road trip to see some of the most beautiful beaches in the country. Check  this website to get an idea.

10 – Naranjo de Bulnes (Along the trip)

Naranjo de bulnes lookout in Asturias Spain

Naranjo de Bulnes (Urriellu Peak) is the name of the most famous mountain of Los Picos de Europa. Even without being the tallest one (2519 meters), thanks to its location, it is observable from different viewpoints.

The best lookout to view it is from Mirador del Pozo de la Oración , which is easily accessible with a car park and on the way to Cangas de Onís from Poncebos. It is well marked so you can’t miss it.

Naranjo de Bulnes in Asturias Spain

Another lookout is Mirador de Bulnes. You can visit while you are at Bulnes on the first day. To reach it, there is a short 10-minute hike from Bulnes. There are two more lookouts: Mirador de Camarmeña and Mirador de Pedro Udaondo, but the two we have shown in this post offer better views.

This wraps up our recommendations for a 5-day road trip in Lost Picos de Europe. We hope that our journey detailed in this post has inspired you to visit the beautiful region and to enjoy the hikes, views, cider, and local food.

Picos de Europa

Now that travel restrictions have been lifted in many countries and the Spanish border is now open there may be travellers who wish to ride in Spain but are still reluctant to use airlines for the foreseeable future.

Here at GSmotorcycletours we understand that some riders may prefer to ride their own bikes and make there own way via the ferry to mainland Spain and in particular Northern Spain.

Therefore we are now offering a brand new tour in Northern Spain to compliment our existing tours based in Andalucia.

Right on the edge of Asturias lies the Picos de Europa National Park , an area with an abundance of mountains, amazing scenery and wonderful roads. Every motorcyclist should experience the Picos at some point in their riding career and the area is easily accessible from the French border near Bayonne, or from the UK ferries that arrive daily in Santander and Bilbao.

Riding in the Picos de Europa is a fantastic experience and you will be taken on a magical mystery tour as the excellent roads serpentine in and around the national park. Translating to the ‘Peaks of Europe’, it is believed the name came about as the peaks were the first view of Europe ships would see. Just 20km from Spain’s North coast, three massifs make up the park and offer spectacular views. Gorges, rivers and rocky snow capped peaks ensure you will want to keep your camera handy.

There are several roads well worth a ride in the national park including the N-621 and N-625. These create a horseshoe around the national park, with many smaller roads splitting off into the mountains. The road surface is generally very good and the tarmac can occasionally get a little patchy here and there, but nothing a typical road bike cannot handle.

The first thing you will notice as you enter the area is the colour. Lush green vegetation is a stark contrast to the image of the dry and dusty Spain most of us have seen. Sitting on the Costa Verde, the Picos de Europa enjoy beautiful scenery, but at a cost. Rain is frequent throughout the year and can strike at any time. With several tall mountains so close to the sea, harsh thunderstorms are also common. Bear this in mind and pack waterproofs.

So our itinerary for the tours is firstly a Meet & Greet at either Santander or Bilbao ferry terminals or a prearranged meeting point if riding down through France before proceeding to our hotel accommodation for the duration of the tour, which means we can dispense with our luggage for the duration. The following three or four days after breakfast we can then focus on riding the best roads in Asturias and immersing ourselves in the beautiful scenery and culture of the Picos and taking in all that the area has to offer, confirming that the Picos de Europa truly is a motorcycle paradise and a joy to ride, and returning every evening to our hotel for our evening meal and no doubt a couple of drinks at the bar. Then on the day of your ferry departure we can take the coastal road back to Santander or Bilbao before saying our goodbyes.

Northern Spain

Our 7 day tour is a little different from our above tours as we also venture further west from the Picos and explore the regions of Asturias, Galicia, Castile and León, as well as a visit to Fisterra which is the most westerly point in mainland Spain, or sometimes know as "the end of the world" because in Roman times it was believed to be the end of the known world.

Asturias and Galicia have some of the best roads in Northern Spain. Couple that with a very small population density and some of the best tarmac on the European mainland, and you're onto a winner. Get lost in the area, where all the roads reward with flashes of fabulous views and little restaurants to relax at.

Galicia in general is much flatter than neighbouring Asturias. Normally, fewer mountains mean more farmland and straighter roads, but Galicia is saved by its cracking coastline, which cuts in and out around Spain's north west headland. Ride to the north coast and you will come across smaller roads full of switchbacks although some interesting roads can still be found inland and as we ride through the coastal hills of northern Galicia it's as if the landscape here hasn't changed for one hundred years.

Castile and León makes it an irresistible choice for motorbike lovers and the ideal location for touring. The landscape is crisscrossed with twisting roads and offering spectacular scenery with breathtaking views.

This is a land of contrasts, with scattered valleys, forests, plateaus and peaks and a rich cultural heritage at every turn, accompanied by an outstanding culinary tradition.

Picos de Europa National Park Ultimate Guide in 2024 & Road Trip Itinerary

There’s a chance you may have never even heard of the incredible Picos de Europa National Park in Spain. Perfectly nestled in the middle of the scenic north coast of Spain, these rugged and diverse mountains are less than 15 miles from the Bay of Biscay.

The tallest mountain peak in the Picos de Europa is Torre de Cerredo which sits at just about 8,700 feet, but numerous limestone peaks make up the Picos de Europa National Park. The three mountain ranges of the Picos include the Western (Occidental), Central (Central), and Eastern (Oriental).

The Picos de Europa National Park (Parque Nacional de los Picos de Europa) is also unique as it includes three autonomous regions in Spain: Cantabria, Asturias, and León (Castille & León). This National Park in Spain stretches over 250 square miles.

While popular, the Picos de Europa National Park still feels like a “hidden gem” and remains a favorite of hikers, rock climbers, and those looking to get a little off the beaten path in Spain.

It’s not just hikers who can enjoy the beauty of the Picos de Europa. Find charming villages, views of jagged mountain peaks, speedy cable cars, lovely alpine lakes, and a unique culinary scene.

This under-appreciated National Park in Spain actually doesn’t feel very “Spanish” at all.

one of the best views on the Cares Gorge hike in the Picos de Europa National Park of a stone bridge and karst limestone mountains

With the Picos de Europa National Park being spread across three different regions, it can be hard to plan a visit. Each region has a wealth of information about its section of the national park, but the tourist information centers can lack details on the neighboring regions of the park.

This Picos de Europa itinerary includes how to get a taste of all three unique communities!

A Taste of Picos de Europa National Park

One of the easiest access points to reach the Picos de Europa Spain is the bustling port town of Santander . This city is the capital of the Cantabria region and has an airport (Santander Airport SDR). Santander has a well-connected bus terminal and train station. Many of the car rental agencies are found next to the Estación de tren Santander.

Bonus, the Picos de Europa gateway mountain village of Potes, is only a scenic hour and a half drive away. Santander has a ton of charming tapas restaurants and is a great place to start any Picos de Europa itinerary.

If visiting the Basque region in Spain , Bilbao has an international airport (BIO). Bilbao is well-connected to the gem city of San Sebastian , which is located directly on the Bay of Biscay and is undoubtedly a food destination in Spain .

Another popular way to get to the Picos de Europa National Park is from Oviedo of the Asturias region. Oviedo is a bustling city with an important Cathedral and hilltop Pre-Romanesque Churches .

If departing from Oviedo, it’s best to reverse this Picos de Europa itinerary and head first to the village of Cangas de Onís, only an hour and a half from the Principality City of Asturias. Buses run by Alsa also connect Oviedo to Cangas de Onis.

Due to the diversity and sheer size of the park, the best way to utilize your time in the Picos de Europa is to rent a car. However, I’ve visited the Picos de Europa once using a car and another time by using public transportation and taxis.

☛ Psst.. . Public transportation is sporadic and usually runs to limited destinations. These services are usually only available from June to mid-October

Alternative Ways to Get to the Picos de Europa Spain

a large metal signboard with a carved out pilgrim for the Camino Lebaniego with the beautiful village of San Vicente de la Barquera in the backdrop

Spain is famous for its many Camino de Santiago pilgrimage routes . Camino routes span all across Europe and end at the impressive Cathedral de Santiago de Compostela .

There is a pilgrimage route that starts on the Camino de Santiago Norte Way from the charming village of San Vicente de la Barquera . The way leaves the coast and twists through the mountains and small villages to arrive at the Monastery Santo Toribio de Liebana just after the medieval village of Potes.

🥾  Camino Lebaniego  |  San Vicente de la Barquera – Monastery Santo Toribio de Liebana (near Potes)  |  Distance:  44.7 Miles (71.9 KM)  |  Duration:  3 – 5 Days  |  Difficulty:  Challenging with mountainous terrain

The pilgrimage site of the  Monastery of Santo Toribio de Liebana is significant because it is said to hold the sacred relic of the original wood True Cross (Lignum Crucis). Pilgrims have been walking the way of Lebaniego for over 500 years to gaze upon the remains of a section of the wooden cross.

This alternative way to reach the Picos de Europa is challenging and best suited for experienced hikers. Like all Camino de Santiago pilgrimages, it’s important to pack light and follow the arrows.

Best Time to Visit Picos de Europa National Park

woman surrounded by mountains with snow in the Picos de Europa National Park

Many areas of the Picos de Europa National Park are open year-round. With its close proximity to the ocean, the park’s weather can be surprisingly temperate. However, some areas of the park are hard to access and can close due to weather conditions.

The peak season or high season in the Picos de Europa is from July – September. During this time, almost all of the trails are open and the crowds a plentiful. This national park is extremely popular with Spanish domestic tourism during the summer months. Many Spanish locals head to northern Spain and the mountains to escape the blazing summer heat.

July and August can be unbearable with crowds and accommodation can be harder to find (and more expensive).

In contrast, during the off-season, some of the trails may be hard to access and you encounter some road closures. It does snow in the high mountains of the Picos de Europa, so some mountain refugees can close.

During the shoulder months of May, June, October, and even early November are perfect times to visit the Picos de Europa National Park.

Believe it or not, I took this Picos de Europa road trip in the first week of November. In some areas I encountered snow, but nothing too drastic to deter a visit. Many of the mornings started out with overcast skies, but I was usually fortunate enough to enjoy sunny afternoons.

Picos de Europa Road Trip Itinerary Day by Day

Ruins, Limestone Mountains, sky, clouds, grass

This four-day guide to the Picos de Europa starts from Santander and visits all three autonomous communities of the national park. This is only a brief overview of a 4-day Picos de Europa National Park road trip.

I’ve also included some bonus trips if you wish to spend longer than 4 days in the Picos de Europa National Park. I’ve visited the Picos de Europa a few times to complete numerous hikes and explore more in-depth.

Picos de Europa Road Trip Day 1 | Santander to Potes & Fuente Dé

Let’s begin this epic “taste of the Picos de Europa road trip.” Remember, this itinerary can be reversed for those departing from Oviedo.

It’s best to pick up a rental car as early as possible. From Santander, it’s under a 2-hour drive to Potes. I picked up my car by 11:00, but I wish I had picked it up as early as possible

a green meadow with jagged peaks near the Fuente Dé cable car

There were few cars to choose from with my last-minute road trip, but a mini-cooper whipped through the mountains better than I thought. However, I did encounter snowy roads in one area, that were a little problematic for this car.

☛There are multiple car rental agencies located right at the main train station in Santander Cantabria | Average Daily Cost: $30- $40 USD | Those who can drive a manual car will find cheaper rates!

Leave the train station and exit Santander. The road is quite easy to follow and passes through small villages and windy mountain roads. Be mindful as there were some rock fragments I had to dodge as I began my ascent up to the village of Potes.

Santander Train Station to Potes: Around 70 miles | Under 2 hours

Arrive at Potes, a fantastic medieval village in the Cantabria region of the park. Explore the twisting cobblestone streets and lovely village.

Located in a stunning valley, wander across beautiful bridges that straddle and connect this picturesque village. Either spend the afternoon soaking in activities in the city or drop off your luggage and head to Fuente Dé.

Potes to Fuente Dé: 15 miles | 25 minutes

Teleférico de Fuente Dé

Fuente Dé, grass, mountains, Picos de Europa National Park, trees, sky, Teleférico de Fuente Dé , cable car, building

Visit the picturesque village of Fuente Dé. The main attraction here is to take the almost 2,500-foot climb to the top of the mountain. Most travelers visit Fuente Dé to ride up the cable car or to hike.

The cable car allows visitors to savor the impressive Central Massif views and the top of the cable car is at an elevation of 6,079 feet (1,853 m). The Fuente Dé cable car zips to the top of this mountain in under 4 minutes!

There is a large parking lot at the foot of the Teleférico de Fuente Dé (cable car) along with two hotels: the luxurious Parador de Fuente Dé and Hotel Rebeco .

Find a restaurant at the top of the cable car for those looking to simply savor those incredible views of jagged peaks. Keep your eyes peeled for Chamois, which is a goat-like almost antelope.

From here, it’s possible to explore a few hiking trails. The official cable car website offers a few hiking routes that are reachable from the drop-off of the cable car. The two most popular hiking routes from Fuente Dé are the challenging high mountain Horcados Rojos trail and the popular Ruta Puertos de Aliva.

One of the most popular ways to visit Fuente Dé is to ride up the cable car and then hike down via the PR-PNPE 24 Puertos de Áliva trail. This trail is long but fairly easy as it descends down the mountainside. Appreciate the high mountain views, meadows, and as the trail makes its final descent, forests filled with oak and beach trees.

End in the village of Espinama or loop back to the parking lot.

🥾 Puertos de Áliva Trail from Top of Fuente Cable Car | PR-PNPE 24 | Distance: 9 miles (14.5 KM) to the parking lot | Duration: +/- 4.5 hours | Official Path Information

If hiking down from the Teleférico de Fuente Dé, make sure to have plenty of time and carry enough water.

Fuente Dé Cable Car | Teleférico de Fuente Dé

Fuente Dé, grass, mountains, Picos de Europa National Park, trees, sky, Teleférico de Fuente Dé , cable car, building, mountains, snow, grass, sun

The cable car is one of the most popular places to visit in the Picos de Europa National Park, so it’s best to pre-book tickets. During the high season, pre-booking tickets is essential. Online tickets must be purchased at a minimum of 24 hours in advance.

High Season: End of June – Mid-September / Daily: 8:00 – 18:30 | Last Departure runs 15 minutes before closing | High Season Adult Ticket : Round-Trip € 24 / One-Way: € 13 | Buy Ticket Online Here

The Cable car in Fuente Dé is typically closed on December 24, 25, & 31, January 1 and 6.

Sleeping in Potes & Night Activities

I opted to sleep in Potes as the village has a bustling tapas and nightlife scene compared to the nearby remote mountain communities. Although the population is under 1,500 people, the medieval streets become filled with eager visitors out enjoying the nightly tapas scene.

Don’t forget that the Spanish culture eats late, and many restaurants won’t start serving dinner until around 21:00.

You may start to notice multiple signs for “Sidra” bars. These cider bars are a trademark of the Asturias region, but nearby villages have started offering these popular watering holes.

A great place to sleep in Potes with close proximity to the heart of Old Town is the Hostería Picos de Europa . Find friendly owners, comfortable, yet modern rooms, and on-site parking (a huge bonus) , all within walking distance of the charming streets of Potes.

Additionally, there are the top-rated Hosteria Sierra del Oso and the popular Casa Cayo .

Picos de Europa Road Trip Day 2 | Epic Viewpoints to Ruta del Cares

On Day 2 of this Picos de Europa itinerary, try to get an early morning start. There are a few epic viewpoints en route to the incredible day hike of Ruta del Cares.

The Ruta del Cares will take at least 6 -8 hours round-trip, so waking up with the sunrise is important!

Mirador del Corzo / San Glorio (Deer Statue)

a metal deer marks the San Glorio Pass in the Picos de Europa with red mini cooper parked next to it

This nice little viewpoint is a great place to get out and stretch your legs. This is where the autonomous communities of León and Cantabria meet. Take a few photos and head just a few miles further down to Oso Pardo, which offers even more sweeping views.

Potes to Mirador del Corzo: 15 miles | half an hour

Monument to Oso Pardo / Collado de Llesba (Bear Statue)

The views of the mountains from Oso Parado are absolutely stunning. The friendly man who owns the Hostería Picos de Europa told me this was his favorite viewpoint in all of Cantabria and I had to agree.

There are a few hiking trails nearby, but due to time restraints, I only enjoyed the epic views before heading toward Caín de Valdeón.

The Oso Parado boasts a stone bear with mountain views

On foggy days it’s best to skip these two viewpoints, as there will be nearly zero visibility.

Mirador del Corzo to Monument to Oso Parado: 3.5 miles | under 10 minutes

Next, take the twisting and turning roads to the small hamlet of Caín de Valdeón. The village of Caín de Valdeón is one of the starting points for the most popular hike in the Picos de Europa National Park, the Ruta del Cares.

Monument to Oso Parado to Caín de Valdeón: 25 miles | 1 hour

Day Hike at the Ruta del Cares | (PR-PNPE 3)

The Ruta del Cares, or the Cores Gorge, may be the most popular and famous day hike in the Picos de Europa National Park. This trail is an out-and-back route that follows the Rio Cares along a stunning gorge, engulfed by rugged limestone mountains.

Ruta del Cares, Picos de Europa National Park, Senda del Cares mountains, limestone mountains, grass, stones, trees, day hikes of PIcos de Europa, gorge

The Cares Gorge hike is 12 km each way (around 7.5 miles). This epic gorge hike includes paths that cut through small caves and cross bridges. The Ruta del Cares trail runs between the two villages of Caín de Valdeón (León) and Poncebos (Asturias).

The Ruta del Cares trail is extremely well-marked but can offer up its own set of challenges. Many sections of the path have no guard rail and it can be mind-boggling to look down at the depths of the canyon. There are sections of the gorge that reach depths of nearly 2,000 meters (6,562 ft).

The trail is flat, but there are a few parts of the trail that have steeper inclines. Overall, I would say this trail is fairly easy, but allow 3.5 hours to reach Poncebos and another 3.5 to return. It is also possible to call a taxi to return you to your car, but I don’t necessarily recommend that.

tour jeep picos de europa

There are a few parts of the trail that go through caves and tunnels that have been built into the mountainside, so it’s best to carry a headlamp just in case.

The Ruta del Cares is by far the most popular and trekked trail in the Picos de Europa National Park.

Where to Start the Cares Gorge Hike?

There are two places to start the Ruta del Cares day hike: Caín de Valdeón (León) or Poncebos (Asturias). I’ve visited both Cares Gorge trailheads and here’s my humble opinion.

Why Start the Ruta del Cares from Caín?

a small mountain pueblo that is Cain de Valdeon

Personally, I liked starting the Ruta del Cares trail from Caín de Valdeón. Driving from Potes, you will be blessed with two great viewpoints of the Picos de Europa mountains. The windy road deters some drivers, but the road is beautiful and sees little traffic. Also, with a car, it’s possible to park right next to the trailhead for free.

With fewer people starting the Cares Gorge from Caín de Valdeón, it’s easier to snag a great parking spot.

Finally, the most scenic and adventurous part of the Cares Gorge trail is closer to Caín. So, if you can’t make it all the way to Poncebos Asturias, you get to experience the best part of the trail!

Utilize the parking lot in front of Hostal La Ruta and enjoy a beverage upon return

Why Start the Ruta del Cares from Poncebos?

If hiking in the Picos de Europa National Park is your main focus, then I would start the Ruta del Cares from Poncebos Asturias.

tour jeep picos de europa

There are tons of hikes from Poncebos, so you’ll have to add an extra day or two to your Picos de Europa itinerary if looking to spend most of your time hiking in the Picos de Europa.

Poncebos sits near many trailheads, including the Canal del Texu trail to reach Bulnes , one of Spain’s most isolated villages. If you don’t want to hike, it’s possible to visit Bulnes by riding the Bulnes funicular.

By the way, if interested in visiting the best Asturias villages in the Picos de Europa , it’s possible to hike or visit them in a day. This hike includes Sotres , the highest inhabited village in the Picos de Europa mountains.

It is more common for people to start the Cares Gorge hike from the village of Poncebos, which is the other end of the trailhead. This access point is also easy to reach from the mountain villages of Las Arenas de Cabrales .

Another great and totally different gorge hike than the Ruta del Cares is the Ruta Rio Casaño . This scenic route is just down the road from Las Arenas de Cabrales and is another one of my favorite hikes in the Picos de Europa.

Be mindful that Poncebos is in the opposite direction of Cain, so it’s a little bit of a backtrack to get there. However, it’s really easy to reach Poncebos from Cangas de Onis.

Sleeping Options for Ruta del Cares Hike

the bright orange Poncebos Hostal sits along the Cares River in the Picos de Europa National Park

Depending on how you wish to hike the Ruta del Cares Gorge, there are a few different sleeping options.

  • Take the 7.5-mile hike to Poncebos and spend the night. Poncebos has a few accommodation options . I love sleeping at Hostal Poncebos . Alternatively, it’s possible to sleep in Las Arenas de Cabrales , which is just down the road and well-connected with Poncebos via bus or taxi. Las Arenas de Cabrales is more of a village with plenty of restaurants, cafes, shops, and a tourist information center.
  • Do the round-trip (out and back) version of the Ruta del Cares trail sleep in the adorable village of Caín de Valdeón. La Casona de Palmira is a popular hotel. Budget travelers may wish to sleep at the Hostal La Ruta.
  • If looking to get closer to the next destination of Cangas de Onís, spend the night in the sleepy village of Oseja de Sajambre at Hostal La Cuna del Sella

Picos de Europa National Park Day 3 | Epic Drive to Cangas de Onís & Lagos de Covadonga

incredible views driving near Oseja de Sajambre with forests and mountains

In the morning, if leaving from Caín de Valdeón, this will be one of the longest stretches in the car. However, the views around Oseja de Sajambre are absolutely stunning, so it makes it that much better.

Reach Cangas de Onís and drop off your stuff, or head straight to the beautiful Lagos de Covadonga. The Covadonga Lakes are one of the most popular places to visit in the Picos de Europa National Park in the Asturias region.

Caín de Valdeón to Cangas de Onís: 43 miles | 1 hour and 45 minutes

Lagos de Covadonga (Covadonga Lakes)

Lagos de Covadonga, Lake Enol, Lago de Enol, alpine lake, Picos de Europa National Park, grass, trees, mountains, clouds, sky, road

Lagos de Covadonga comprises two lovely alpine lakes: Enol Lake (Lago Enol) and Ercina Lake (Lago Ercina). Near the Lakes of Covadonga find a restaurant, and during the high season, a helpful tourist information center.

As a conservation measure, the road from the Covadonga Sanctuary to the Lakes of Covadonga is closed to unauthorized travelers (including tourists). This measure is usually only in effect during the high season until the end of September. Check the up-to-date road conditions here .

If visiting during the high season, there are buses run by Alsa from Cangas de Onís to Lagos de Covadonga. Additionally, there are taxi services, too.

If visiting the Picos de Europa National Park during the “off-season” the road from Cangas de Onís to the lakes is an adventure in itself. The winding road up to the parking twists and turns and offers incredible views. The main parking lot for the lakes is referred to as the Buferrera .

Cangas de Onís to Lagos de Covadonga: 13 miles | 35 minutes

Upon arrival, there are plenty of things to see and do just around the Covadonga Lakes. Many families are usually picnicking and wandering the nearby trails. An enjoyable trail is a casual stroll along the PR-PNPE 2 Los Lagos (2 hours).

Keep in mind, that it is not possible to swim in the Covadonga Lakes, as they are protected!

Buferrera Mines

Extremely close to the Lagos de Covdonga are the Buferrera Mines. They are temporarily closed, but it’s permitted to walk around the outside of them. They are worth a quick gander.

Chapel of the Good Shepherd

Ermita de El Buen Pastor, Chapel of the Good Shepherd, stone church, cross, mountains, clouds, sky, trees, grass, Picos de Europa National Park

In the opposite direction of the Covadonga Lakes, it’s possible to venture towards a few trails and open pastures. Sitting in the middle of the meadow pasture lies the tiny Chapel of the Good Shepherd. This small monument offers some incredible views of the mountains.

if you continue on the path, it’s also possible to visit the Mirador del Rey. This simple viewpoint has nice views of the mountains, but no views of the lakes.

Buferrera to Mirador de Ordiales | PR-PNPE-5

For those looking for a more challenging, but stunning path, follow the signage to Buferrera Ordiales. Although I didn’t make it all the way to the viewpoint, this hiking trail was one of my favorites in Picos de Europa National Park.

Buferrera Ordiales, Picos de Europa National Park, mountains, grass, snowy peaks, clouds, sky, horse

On this path, I was able to walk past free-range horses, spot more Chamois, and did not pass a single soul. Since it was November, I went up as far as I could until I needed proper snow hiking gear. But, it was totally worth it!

You will need a full day to hike to the Mirador de Ordiales and back down. The out-and-back hike is challenging and takes hikers up 5,741 feet (1,750 meters). However, the rewards are some of the best views in the entire Picos de Europa National Park.

At the top viewpoint of Mirador de Ordiles is a tribute to Pedro Pidal, the Marques of Villaviciosa, and the first to climb Naranjo de Bulnes (Pico Urriellu).

Visit the Santuario de Covadonga

Basílica de Santa María la Real de Covadonga, pink church, trees, cloudy sky, Cangas de Onís

After exploring the Lagos de Covadonga, take the curvy road back towards Cangas de Onís. Look for the viewpoint to snap some great photos of the pink Basílica de Santa María la Real de Covadonga.

It is possible to visit the Sanctuary of Covadonga for free. Onsite, find a few points of interest, like the Holy Cave, the signature pink Basilica, and the museum.

Cangas de Onís

Old Roman Bridge, stone bridge, cross, trees, fall foliage, grass, river, stones, Cangas de Onís, clouds

Cangas de Onís is a cute little mountain village in the heart of the Asturias region of the Pico de Europa Spain. There are plenty of things to do in Cangas de Onís making it an ideal to sleep.

Visit a Cider Bar

This is the place to make sure to try out the “Sidra,” or cider house/ bar. It’s crazy, but the region of Asturias has over 80 major cider mills and produces 80% of all cider in Spain.

Asturias cider culture is unique to the region and one of the best ways to experience it is at a cider bar. Here, it’s all about the pour! Ciders are typically poured from a tall height to create bubbles. These bubbles allow the true flavor of the cider to shine through. This is why only a few “sips” are poured at a time.

To ensure the flavor of the cider, many cider houses have little machines that replicate the process. Make sure to experience at least one cider house in Asturias.

The cider here tastes different than the Basque cider you’ll find near San Sebastian in the hillside village of Astigarraga.

Old Roman Bridge

Another popular place to visit in Cangas de Onís is the Old Roman Bridge. Walk along the cobblestone path and enjoy the surrounding mountains from the old bridge.

Where to Stay in Cangas de Onís

Pension Reconquista, street, buildings, car, mountains, grass, trees, clouds, sky, Cangas de Onís

In the center of it all, Pension Reconquista offers simple rooms with lovely little balconies! Enjoy a morning coffee with the beautiful mountains in the backdrop. The owners are warm and very accommodating. This little hotel is close to the bridge and within a few minutes walk of some of the best cider bars in Cangas de Onís.

Cangas de Onis is a popular place to base when visiting the Picos de Europa National Park. There are tons of different accommodation options for all types of travelers and budgets.

Hotel Santa Cruz is a popular option near the center of the village along with Hotel Los Lagos Nature.

Leave Picos de Europa National Park & What to Do Next

On Day 4, it’s sadly time to leave the incredible Picos de Europa National Park. However, there are a few spots that you could enjoy before returning the car.

As I picked up my car in Santander, I also returned it there.

San Vicente de la Barquera

San Vicente de la Barquera is a spectacular coastal village on the Camino del Norte

San Vicente de la Barquera is truly a gem found on the coastline in Cantabria. On a clear day, the incredible Picos de Europa mountains sit in the backdrop of this seaside village.

San Vicente de la Barquera is part of the Camino de Santiago pilgrimage route. The medieval town has a 13th-century castle and some of the original gates. Like most towns on the Camino de Santiago , there is an iconic church filled with history.

There are plenty of tapas bars and restaurants serving up the freshest fish and seafood.

Cangas de Onís to San Vicente de la Barquera: 50 miles | 50 minutes

Santillana del Mar

Santillana del Mar, Villages of Spain, buildings, balconies, cobblestone streets, trees, clouds, sky, beautiful villages of spain

Leave the Picos de Europe National Park and head towards the sea. The road basically follows near the coast until you reach the village of Santillana del Mar . Yes, I know, Santillana del Mar is quite touristy. However, there is still a little charm to find throughout the city.

This city is also known as the “City of Three Lies,” since it does not have a Saint, is not flat (llana), and is not directly on the Sea (Mar).

Cangas de Onís to Santillana del Mar: 70 miles | 1 hour 15 minutes

The village can feel a little “sold out” to tourism, but if you go in with an open mind, the streets are extremely picturesque. Maybe it was because I visited in the off-season, but I really could appreciate the architecture with no crowds.

Due to its touristy nature, maybe try to not eat here, as the food can be really hit or miss.

In my opinion, I preferred San Vicente de la Barquera to Santillana del Mar.

However, Santillana del Mar is only a 30-minute drive in the direction of Santander, so it’s possible to visit both villages before returning the rental car.

Return Car to Santander

Llamona Tapas Bar, tapas, wine, wine glass, plate, silverware, case, bar, Santander

Leave the village and return the car back to Santander. If you haven’t yet, now that you have no car, spend the night in Santander and enjoy a night of wine and fresh seafood tapas joints!

Santillana del Mar to Santander: 20 miles | Half an Hour

Psst… Santander Central Hostel is a centrally located hostel with nice common spaces, welcoming staff, super clean, and close to some of the best tapas places in Santander.

In short, this ultimate guide to the Picos de Europa includes a detailed itinerary and is the perfect sampler to get a taste of the Picos de Europa National Park. This Picos de Europa road trip crosses all three autonomous communities that make up the diverse naturally and culturally rich Picos de Europa National Park.

This Picos de Europa itinerary is jam-packed with a wide range of activities from riding a cable car, to day hikes, lovely viewpoints, and experiencing cultural traditions.

Wow, looks incredible! I have never heard of Picos de Europa, although I have been to Oviedo before. I will definitely explore more in the North of Spain in the future, thanks for this fantastic itinerary!

Thanks Toni!! Northern Spain is so incredible! I hope to get back and explore more of it in the near future, too! 🙃

Strange, but I have not heard of Picos de Europa National Park before. It looks like interesting place well worth traveling to. Thanks for bringing it to my attention and also a detailed itinerary with accomodation options!

It still is a little hidden gem tucked away in Spain! Thanks for reading!

I’ve been considering visiting this region for a while, thanks to a recommendation from a friend. It looks truly stunning, and perfect for a keen hiker like myself. I love the idea of exploring the mountains by day and tucking into a tapas and a few sidra by night.

Ahhh, yes! Miss those sidra bars. Happy hiking! 🥾

This area of Spain has been on my list for over a year – can’t wait to head up to the north!

Hi Megs, Love this article…sooo informative! I wish I had 4 days to experience it all, but sadly not. I wonder if you might be able to suggest a one day scenic driving itinerary through the Picos de Europa enroute from either Santander or Oviedo to Leon? I already have FOMO thinking about all the beautiful sights I won’t be able to see, but hoping you might be able to suggest a scenic route even if it’s a long day. Would appreciate your input. Thanks

Thanks Donna, I sent a reply via email! Thanks for reading and enjoy the Picos

Hi there, I note that you were there early November. Would you happen to know how the situation is like in early December? Will it be too cold/the weather conditions not ideal to visit the national park?

Hey Jules! I did go in early November and there was some snow in the mornings that did make certain roads in the higher mountains a little slick. Luckily, when the sun came up it all melted off the road. I am not honestly sure about December since the mountains always have a mind of their own. However, in most cases, the areas closer to the coast and not so inland like Cangis de Onís may be more temperate, but still pretty wet. If you decide to go I’d love to hear how December in the Picos was!

Your post is very informative. We’re planning a 4-5 day tour through the region and your writing really helped us in crafting our itinerary. Keep up the good work, Megs! And keep wandering.

Thank you so much Robert!🙏

I truly loved the Picos and know you will, too!! The area is so unlike any place else in Spain.

Hey Ashley-

So sorry for the late reply. I was just in Spain walking the Camino Frances and I did revisit the Picos on my way out, but didn’t take my laptop. From Oviedo, it’s very easy to reach Cangas de Onis, where it’s possible to visit the roman bridge, cider bars, Lagos de Covadonga, the popular viewpoint Mirador de La Reina, and the Basilica de Santa Maria la Real de Covadonga and the nearby Sanctuary of Covadonga. This is a great one day access from Oviedo and can be done with or without a car. 💙

I’m not sure if you would drive back to Oviedo, but you could also continue into Las Arenas de Cabrales, which is a small town that has access to smaller mountain villages like Ponceboes, Bulnes, Sotres, and even the Cares Gorge! I’m planning on writing a detailed guide for all my new info and hikes! 🏔

Happy Travels

Hello Megs Massive thank you for your brilliant itinerary! We had a fantastic few days in the Pico’s, the highlight being the gorge walk!!! You helped us make the most of our few days in the mountains. Hope your travels are still going well! Keep blogging! BW Ruth

Thank you so much Ruth! The Picos de Europa National Park is one of my favorite places in Europe. So glad you got to enjoy it, too!

Hi just wanted to say a huge thanks for the Picos de Europas tour. We followed it recently and loved it so much we actually returned back to the Picos again having left! If you have the opportunity an extra day or so in Potes is good to allow more time on Fuente De walks. We stayed at the excellent Camping la Viorna. Also recommendation to start Ruta del Cares from Cain is perfect, Ruta Hostel is basic but great. Thanks once again for a great itinerary in this lesser known area.

Thanks Paul! That’s so great and thanks for the feedback and suggestion!

I have also returned to the Picos twice now and may return again next month.

They really are a special place 🏔

Hi Megs, Thanks for this informative travel itinerary. We would like to follow your route and spend two days in Potes and are planning on going mid March. What are your thoughts on weather then? I saw that you went in Nov. so we where thinking March is also not a peak time and may be a good time to visit.

Hey Christie-

I think you will love two days in Potes!

I am here in Spain right now (January/Feb) and it has been unusually warm and dry. The weather will always be unpredictable.

Keep in mind that the buses will typically run in the Picos de Europa during Easter weekend which this year (2024) falls at the end of March. Enjoy the Picos de Europa, it is one of my favorite places in Spain. 🙂

Picos De Europa By Motorhome

Last Updated: October 16, 2019 by Gilda

Driving our large motorhome through the scenic, but rather winding, narrow roads of the Picos de Europa mountain range was a little challenging in places, but it turned out to be one of the best and most beautiful road trips we have done during our recently four months touring France, Spain and Portugal by motorhome.

Bordering Asturias, Cantabria and Castilla y León, the Picos de Europa (Europe Peaks) National Park is an absolute gem in Northern Spain. Being a lot less popular than other regions of Spain it is mercifully a lot less touristic and busy than the coastal regions, although during the summer months it will be a lot busier than when we visited.

There is about 300 square miles/482 km square of natural beauty, dramatic high limestone peaks covered with snow in the winter, but now (May/19) thankfully just dusted with snow on some of the higher ground or North-facing sheltered spots.

Leaving Santiago de Compostela behind, we stayed overnight off-grid at Ribadeo (GPS N43.53704 W7.03529), just next to the town port with lovely river views.

The view from our motorhome windows at Ribadeo

Continuing our journey North we stayed two nights at Cudillero, a charming small fishing village in Northern Spain. The weather was bad with a lot of rain, prompting us to stay put there for two nights at the excellent new campsite with great facilities (Camping L’Amuravela GPS N43.55513 W6.14355) and within walking distance, albeit uphill from the pretty Cudillero Harbour.

tour jeep picos de europa

Cudillero is a small fishing village that feels like frozen in time

Worried about the rain and foggy weather forecasted for the Picos de Europa we decided to stay again for two nights at our next stop of Oviedo at the town’s free motorhome Aire (GPS N43.3830 W5.8237). There was a cancer charity race going on over the weekend and therefore there were lively with music bands and entertainment. Oviedo is an interesting city with a lovely historic centre, cafes and restaurants, two nights was enough to explore.

tour jeep picos de europa

Guess who is a big fan of Oviedo? This controversial life-size statue of Woody Allen is a landmark in Oviedo’s town centre.

With sunshine now forecasted for the Picos de Europa, we drove towards the Covadonga Lakes and the start of five wonderful days of exploring this mountainous landscape.

Our route : From Oviedo, we drove to Covadonga for the Santa Cueva (Holy Cave) and Covadonga Lakes > Cangas de Onis >Arenas de Cabrales (for exploring Bulnes and Cares Gorge) >  Fuente De > Potes > Comillas > Bilbao (for our ferry home to England).

Covadonga Lakes

The road from Covadonga village up to the Covadonga Lakes is closed for private vehicles during the summer months , but there is a bus service that can be taken from Covadonga and will take tourists up to the Lakes. Some people will choose to trek from the Covadonga Santa Cueva up to the Lakes, but it is quite a steep and long hike.

We were visiting in May/19 and therefore the road was still open for cars and motorhomes (there are no bus services from Covadonga at this time of the year). The road is narrow in places and there are sheer drops at one side, but it is a very good road surface and not too narrow, so even with our 7 metres motorhome it was not a particularly difficult drive (according to Brian).

We gained about a thousand metres of altitude as we climbed our way up the 12 Km road to the Lakes. There are places to stop along the road with gorgeous viewpoints and sweeping views over the Picos, the green Cantabrian countryside and even the Atlantic Ocean in the distance. The main hazards here are the cows and goats wandering on the road.

tour jeep picos de europa

Sheep, cows and goats are the biggest hazards on these roads

tour jeep picos de europa

These lucky cows have a great lake view at the Covadonga Lakes

Arriving at the top we parked at the site car park and chose to do a circular hike from Lake Enol to Lake Ercina. The idyllic mountain scene is complete with cows and goats carrying the heavy but melodic bells around their necks, the bell sounds echoing throughout the mountains, you can hear them from everywhere, a very reassuring sound. The lake waters are still as a mirror, surrounded by the grey jagged mountain peaks. Our short hike was just over one hour and packed full of great scenery.

tour jeep picos de europa

The fog was rolling in as we arrived at lake Ercina adding an air of mystery

There are various hike routes in this area, including one to visit the mines of Buferrera, which used to produce iron and magnesium in abundance between 1893 and 1932.

Cangas De Onis

Just as we were heading back from Lake Ercina to our home on wheels, the fog was rolling in. Therefore we decided to head straight down the mountain to our free overnight stay in Cangas de Onis (N43.35225 W5.12549) about 27 Km drive from the Lakes. The motorhome Aire there was conveniently located in the town centre, giving us a chance to explore the town before night time.

tour jeep picos de europa

Ancient bridge at Cangas de Onis with a replica of the Victory Cross

As history will have it, around the year 722, Don Pelayo established his court here. A replica of the famous Spanish Victory Cross can be seen hanging from the ancient bridge straddling the Sella River in the town centre. The Victory Cross represents the legendary victory over the Moors that is reported to have happened at Covadonga.

We left Cangas de Onis early next morning retracing our steps back to Covadonga, since we were keen to visit the Santa Cueva/Holy Cave (unfortunately we missed visiting it during our visit to the Covadonga Lakes the day before, it would have made more sense to visit both sites in the same day and avoid having to backtrack).

Santa Cueva and the Basílica de Santa María la Real de Covadonga

We parked at the main car park in front of the Basilica, arriving early and so managing to secure a good parking spot. The Basilica has striking pinkish limestone walls with the tower spires looking regal against the rugged mountain scenery.

tour jeep picos de europa

Arriving early we got this great parking spot in front of the Basilica, for our exploring of this area

In front of the Basilica, there is a proud statue of Don Pelayo.

tour jeep picos de europa

Don Pelayo Statue

After exploring the Basilica we walked towards the tunnel that leads into the Santa Cueva (Holy Cave), to the simple church built inside the cave, holding the statue of the Virgen of Covadonga, patron saint of Asturias. The name Covadonga means “Cave of Our Lady” and it refers to the sanctuary dedicated to the virgin.

The cave is also reported to contain the remains of Don Pelayo, his wife and also King Alfonso I.

tour jeep picos de europa

This tunnel leads into the Holy Cave

tour jeep picos de europa

Holy Cave/ Santa Cueva with the chapel.

Many believe the great Christian reconquest began here since when the Christians defeated the Moors around the year 722 the Holy Cave was the site of refuge before the legendary battle. Legend has it that the Virgin Mary appeared to the Christian army before the battle, therefore aiding their victory. We thoroughly enjoyed our visit and although it is a very touristic site, we managed to explore it before the many tour buses arrived.

tour jeep picos de europa

The remains of Don Pelayo are reported to be buried here, he died in 737. The tomb is found inside the Santa Cueva, to the right of the little chapel’s altar.

From here we drove towards Arenas de Cabrales, where our home on wheels stayed parked at a really nice and friendly campsite for the following three nights (Naranjo de Bulnes Campsite GPS N43.29928 W4.80258). Our reason for staying here was its close proximity to the hidden mountain village of Bulnes and the incredible Cares Gorge hiking trail.

Bulnes Funicular

We did drive the motorhome to the Bulnes Funicular, managing to get a parking spot for our motorhome by the funicular’s entrance located near the tiny village of Poncebos. Not always possible, since parking here is very limited. The funicular is an easy 8 minutes ride that sets off every 30 minutes, via a tunnel carved through the mountain. Quite a feat of engineering.

tour jeep picos de europa

Can you spot Brian?

The village of Bulnes standing at about 2,400 feet, it is one of the most remote in Europe. Before the funicular construction, it was only reachable via trails up the Mountain ranges of Naranjo de Bulnes, which could take 2 to 3 hours. Hikers can still hike the trails instead of coughing up the 22 Euros per person to ride the funicular.

The funicular has made the Bulnes village, which has a population of about 34 people, a lot easier to reach and it is now a popular tourist destination. Although there were only another 3 couples boarding the funicular with us when we visited, it can get very busy during the summer months.

tour jeep picos de europa

Coffee with an amazing view, at the hidden village of Bulnes. This viewpoint is in Upper Bulnes, see the trail heading down to Poncebos on the right.

It is a beautiful setting for this tiny village, we loved exploring and walking up some of the trails through the village which is divided into lower Bulnes and higher Bulnes. We ate a delicious homely meal at one of the little restaurants in lower Bulnes and then walked up to a viewpoint at higher Bulnes.

Some people choose to go up with the funicular and then walk down to Poncebos via the trail, but we were feeling lazy and so decided to return using the funicular again.

Poncebos has another great attraction, the amazing Cares Gorge hiking trail. We were to tackle it the next day, so we drove the motorhome back to the campsite where it would stay safe for the next two days, whilst we walked the Cares Gorge trail.

Cares Gorge/Garganta Del Cares

Also called the “Divine Gorge”, this deep gorge is one of the most breathtakingly beautiful one-day hiking trails in Europe. The 12 km path is in places carved at the side of the mountains with the Cares River raging at the bottom of the Gorge. A linear path surrounded by awesome scenery at every turn.

tour jeep picos de europa

Awesome scenery at every turn

The original 1916 precarious path was not as good as it is today; at the time it was used as a maintenance track for a hydro-electric station so workers of the electricity company could monitor a water canal, which carried some of the Cares River water that supplied power to the hydroelectric. In the 1940s and ’50s, a better path was built to improve access for canal maintenance, and that is the path used by tourists today.

tour jeep picos de europa

See part of the water canal here

It is now a well-maintained path, easy to walk albeit narrow in places, but wide enough for a comfortable journey. There are vast rock walls on both sides of the river, with jagged limestone mountains towering above at almost 2,000 metres. The depth of the gorge is impressive and it can be about a 1,000m deep in places.

tour jeep picos de europa

Only goats live here now

The most beautiful part of the trail is towards the Cain end, here the walls of the gorge almost converge. It feels like if you stretch your arms far enough you can touch the mountain wall on the other side of the Cares River.

tour jeep picos de europa

The path is carved at the side of a mountain.

tour jeep picos de europa

Brian is on the bridge, but can you also spot a girl wearing a bikini(on the tunnel)?

tour jeep picos de europa

These caves have been carved into the mountain

There are caves, bridges, waterfalls, ruined huts, a water canal, a river dam and plenty of wild flora and fauna along the way. Just before reaching the Caín Dam, there is a tunnel-like stretch with large windows cut into the rock.

tour jeep picos de europa

Bring a torch to go through these caves and tunnels, it is dark and there are large puddles.

We arrived in Caín quite tired, after the 12 km long walk and we were glad to have a bed for the night here at the local hostel. Staying overnight for us was all part of a great experience and well worth the expense.

tour jeep picos de europa

We were glad to have a very comfortable bed here at this Albergue for the night.

Most people just have a meal and a rest in Caín village before walking back the same route of 12 km back to Poncebos. It is not a difficult walk, most people can easily accomplish it (unless you suffer from vertigo or particularly scared of heights) and hence the beauty of this hike. Maximum enjoyment for not a huge effort.

Tips for Hiking the Cares Gorge

  • The linear, 12 km walk can be started from either the Poncebos end (like we did) or Cain end. Many do the trek from one end and back again in one steady, but long day, altogether it will be a 24 km walk if done in its entirety.
  • If walking from the Poncebos end, there are hotels/campsites to stay at nearby Arenas de Cabrales or at Poncebos itself.
  • If walking from the Cain end, there are also some lovely hotels/hostels/Albergues here, the little village of Cain is gorgeous.
  • There is a bus that operates during the summer season only, from Cain, the journey is about 2 hours to Cangas de Onis and then change bus to Arenas de Cabrales. By taxi, I have heard that it would cost about 120 Euros to get back to your hotel/campsite at Arenas de Cabrales or Poncebos. It is a long way around via the normal roads.
  • My suggestion, if you don’t want to do the whole day round trek, just walk half of the way and then turn around and head back, knowing that it will take you the same time to return to the starting point. If just doing half of the trek I would suggest starting from the Cain end, since it is an easier and even more beautiful hike.
  • The hardest part of the hike for us (we started from Poncebos end) was the first few km uphill. Once we reached the top, it was an easy downhill hike all the way to Cain.

Parking Options : There is very limited parking for cars at the Poncebos end. For motorhomes it is even harder, your best bet is to park at the small car park by the Bulnes Funicular and walk from there. Get there early to find a space.

tour jeep picos de europa

Parking here (at the Poncebos end) is limited, the road is too narrow for larger motorhomes. My suggestion for motorhomes is to try your luck with parking at he nearby Bulnes Funicular car park.

We left our motorhome overnight at the Campsite in Arenas de Cabrales and got a taxi to take us to the start of the walk-in Poncebos. This option cost us 16 Euros return. We stayed overnight in Cain at some lovely lodgings and walked back to Poncebos next day and our taxi picked us up again at the chosen location. It worked very well for us. The lovely Hostel cost us 39 Euros + 32 Euros for dinner and breakfast.

It is free to trek the Cares Gorge Path, make sure to wear sturdy walking shoes, trekking poles can be helpful, sun hat/sun cream, dress appropriately for the weather (maybe a bikini is not a good idea…see if you can spot bikini girl in one of my above photos), take plenty of water and snacks.

It took us about 3 hours to complete the 12 km walk, with lots of breaks for photos and eating/drinking. If you are in the area and enjoy hiking, don’t miss this incredible place, it is a must.

Fuente Dé cable car

Our last day in the Picos de Europa was spent taking the Fuente Dé cable car into the heart of the Picos de Europa Mountain Range. The cable car ride takes just a few minutes to whisk you up to a viewing platform at the top of the mountain, with extraordinary views all around. There is a visitor centre, a restaurant and toilet facilities there.

tour jeep picos de europa

The cable car whisks you up into this viewing platform. It is undergoing some renovations at the moment.

From here there are many fantastic hiking trails, unfortunately, we did not have time for a long hike. Although we did walk along one of the trails for a short stroll into the snowy mountains. Later on, we decided to have our meal at the restaurant, the food was good, reasonably priced for such a place and the views incredible.

tour jeep picos de europa

Stunning views from the viewing platform.

tour jeep picos de europa

Brian feeling on top of the world.

tour jeep picos de europa

It was a bit fresh up here, I was glad for warm clothes.

The large car park is free and it is possible to stay overnight with a motorhome there, but we had already decided to move on to Potes and stay overnight at the free parking area there.

Our first motorhome tour of Europe was fast coming to an end, we had a ferry from Bilbao in Northern Spain to Portsmouth in England, booked for the 29th of May/19. Therefore we did not linger for long in Potes since I had my heart set at visiting a very special house in the town of Comillas.

Situated in the region of Cantabria, Northern Spain. Comillas was a summer destination for the Spanish Royal family and nobility in the 19th Century. This little unassuming town has a lot to offer (it was even the capital of Spain…for one day, 6th of August 1881).

There are Royal Palaces such as the Palacio de Sobrellano, a very charming historic centre, the University Neo-Gothic buildings, the eerily beautiful town cemetery with an Angel looking over it.

Believe it or not this amazing cemetery is also a tourist attraction in Comillas

And my favourite of all and main reason for visiting: the flamboyant Art Nouveau “El Capricho” house. Designed by none other than the wonderful Catalan Architect Antoni Gaudí. One of his earliest works, built between 1983 and1885 (he was just 31 years old) as a summer house for Máximo Díaz de Quijano, brother-in-law of the Marquis of Comillas. It is one of the very few buildings of Gaudí that can be seen outside Catalonia.

There are Moorish influences seen here with the tower, which has been compared to a Persian Minaret

tour jeep picos de europa

A house that is thought to have been at the forefront of the Modernist Movement.

Inside the house is airy and spacious with lots of wood, wrought iron balconies and beautiful tiles. A work of fantasy and originality, showcasing the work of a genius who was well ahead of his time (remember this is 1883). There are lots of strong colours and the sunflower motifs are seen everywhere. In the centre of the house, there is a glass greenhouse where beautiful plants thrive with light and warmth.

We loved having a nose around the house and the small outside gardens.  Apparently poor Mr Quijano only enjoyed 7 days in his new home before dying of some sort of liver disease in his master bedroom, he was just 44 years old.

Just like a fairy tale house.

Gaudí is of course most famous for the amazing Sagrada Familia Cathedral in Barcelona, which he started in 1983 and continued to work on it until his tragic death in 1926. The still not completed Cathedral is the most visited monument in Spain. Comillas played a huge part in Gaudi’s life, giving him mentors and connections that influenced his later work in Barcelona.

The Architect Joan Martorell who designed the Sobrellano Palace in Comillas was instrumental in Gaudi’s life since he got him the job of designing the Sagrada Familia.

We stayed two nights at the free car park by the seafront (GPS N43.38976 W4.28928) in Comillas, before moving on to our final stop at Bilbao.

With mixed feelings and torrential rain, we arrived in Bilbao, staying at a lovely Aire up on the hills overlooking the city (GPS N43.2593 W2.96338). There was a good bus service from there into the city centre.  We stayed only two nights, which is not nearly enough to see the many sites and experiences this great city has to offer.

The main attraction here is, of course, the Guggenheim Museum of Modern and Contemporary Art,  designed by Canadian – American architect Frank Gehry. Its construction has turned Bilbao’s fortune around, this once gritty and industrial looking port city has since become a centre for culture, art and innovation.

The Guggenheim Museum in Bilbao is one of the most important buildings of the 20th Century

The Guggenheim Museum has been hailed a masterpiece of the 20th Century and called by many the greatest building of our time. It draws millions of tourists every year into Bilbao bringing wealth and prosperity.

We spent ages looking at its shining titanium armour, admiring every curve. It is stunning and well worth a visit, even if just for gawping the outside as we did. The exhibition inside the museum has had mixed reviews, the huge queue outside persuaded us to skip it this time.

Puppy by Jeff Koons, sitting pretty in front of the museum

We also loved the Puppy by Jeff Koons sitting in front of the museum, the giant West Highland white terrier was blooming with colourful flowers. The flowers are replaced twice per year with seasonal varieties. The huge structure has a network of pipes that water and feed the plants every 24 hours.

Feeling very hungry we headed towards a restaurant that was well recommended. One of the oldest in the city, it is like an institution offering typical Basque country fare. We ordered the 7-course sampling menu and loved every little morsel that appeared at our table. The perfect finale to our almost 4 months travelling around Spain and Portugal by motorhome.

Traditional Basque country food

It was time to go home, catch up with friends and family and get ready for our second motorhome tour due to start at the end of June/19 to Scandinavia. We caught our ferry home from Bilbao to Portsmouth. A comfortable 28 hours crossing with an en-suite cabin, thankfully the notorious Bay of Biscay behaved itself giving us a pleasant crossing.

Sometime in the near future, I will publish our costs for this motorhome tour of Spain and Portugal, but for now, it is “hasta la vista” from us.

Wow wow wow. I am in love with this place. What a gift to find this breathtaking place just after Santiago de la Compostela. Beautiful photos too.

Val, the Picos de Europa are indeed breathtakingly beautiful. I think you and Paul would love hiking the Cares Gorge, it is a fantastic one day hike. Although I would recommend doing like we did and stay overnight in the lovely village of Cain. From the UK there are flights into Bilbao or Santander, probably the nearest airports. Or if driving, the ferry services are also very good 🙂

We loved Oviedo and the Picos Europa when we visited. I was most impressed by the wild horses we saw driving through the mountains. Hubby returned the next year with his motorcycle and had a great ride.

Darlene, Northern Spain is so beautiful. We were impressed with the Picos de Europa, there are lots of great outdoor activities and I am sure your husband must have loved riding his motorbike through those stunning mountain roads. My husband is also a motorbiker, but he sold both his bikes just before we got the motorhome, maybe he will get back to it in the future. I also loved the wild horses and the mountain dogs, it is lovely to see them as you drive along 🙂

Gilda as you know we loved following you along this area. It was like reliving our cycling tour without all of the gasping. This is an excellent guide to the area and will be most helpful for anyone exploring the Picos.

Sue, I am in awe of you and Dave touring the Picos by bicycle…wow. I really enjoyed this area, it is just perfect for touring by car or motorhome (or by bike) and there are so many great activities to do. Hiking the Cares Gorge was a highlight for us. I hope this little route and guide will be helpful to others who are wishing to travel here.

Such gorgeous photos. I love the one of the cows and the bridge in particular, but all of them are just beautiful. Looks as though it was a terrific trip and the tips you gave will non doubt be helpful to anyone attempting the same. A motorhome seems like a great idea for this kind of trip. Not having to look for lodging each night and being able to keep all your stuff with you and not pack and unpack must make it all so much easier. I can imagine though that navigating the roads could be tough with such a big vehicle.

Great post.

Peta, sorry about misbehaved comment inbox…I have recued your comments. Really appreciated your persevering 🙂 I hope my tips will help others who wish to explore this beautiful area. I particularly loved hiking the Cares Gorge, it really is spectacular and an easy hike to do. We are loving travelling with the motorhome, we are currently on our second tour already. So glad that you have settled so well in Vietnam, a place a long to visit. I will be looking forward to all your wonderful posts from Asia 🙂

Oops I just lost my comment, sigh.

Magnificent photos. Especially love the ones of the cows and the bridge and the lookout. But honestly all the photos are just breathtaking. What a wonderful trip and your tips will be helpful no doubt to anyone going to this region. i love the idea of the motorhome so one doesn’t have to find lodging each night and no need to pack and unpack. I can see where it might be tough on narrow and windy roads though.

Terrific post Gilda

Peta, I managed to rescue your comment, somehow it went on my spam inbox…very sorry. Visiting this area by motorhome was great, even with narrow roads to navigate it was worth it. We settled well with motorhome life and as you have pointed out, not having to pack and unpack all the time or having to book lodgings upfront has given us a lot of flexibility. I am glad you enjoyed the photos and the post, thank you for persevering with the comment inbox 🙂

Lots here but Wow, I’m really impressed by those mountains. It’s made my “must see” list. I’ve mentioned that we’ll be looking at settling in Spain next year. No idea where yet, but I’m thinking we have to look at Northern Spain which seems a lot less busy (and much more green) than other parts of the country. Just fabulous, incredible scenery! (22 Euros for that 8 min funicular? Ouch).

Frank, sorry for the long post. It would probably have been better to have done it in two parts 🙁 These mountain range is impressive, particularly considering how underrated this area is compared to the more popular Pyrenees. We loved it, being a hiker I think you would really enjoy the Cares Gorge. Definitely look at Northern Spain for a possible home base, I think it is such a great area. The funicular was pricey for sure, but worth it 🙂

I bet the days of rain that slowed you down were the same days of rain pouring over us as we walked the Camino Portuguese! Yes? It was great the ordeal.

Beautiful photos of what must be some magnificent countryside. I especially love the photo of the fishing village (2nd photo from the top), as it looks so serene.

Could NEVER walk that bridge!

Ugh…. should read “quite” the ordeal.

Patti, I often thought of you and Abi doing the Camino Portuguese during all that wet weather…you guys are tough. I also love that photo of the little fishing village of Cudillero, it was a charming little place. The Cares Gorge would probably not be for you Patti or for anyone with a fear of heights, there were some very high cliffs and the glass bridge was a little nerve wracking 🙂 But the Picos are stunning and there are so many great hikes in this area. I think you and Abi would like it.

Wow, some of these photos look almost unreal.

Thank you, that is very kind of you. It is a beautiful area of Spain, hard to take a bad photo here. In fact I just wanted to photograph everything, wanting to keep all the memories.

Cuddlier looks absolutely gorgeous and l would like to spend a bit of time there. Bilbao is another place we have been itching to visit. It’s a super long train ride if we don’t fly and we hope to make it happen as we want to experience the food culture that they are so famous for. Beautiful pictures and boy, you guys covered a lot of ground. Wonderful!

Kemkem, Cudillero is such a pretty little fishing village, we had a delicious meal there in one of the harbour restaurants. Bilbao is the place to visit for the incredible Basque food, it is truly amazing. Unfortunately we only managed two full days there, not nearly enough. I think you and Frederico will love it there.

Such a lovely area, Gilda! Subject always to the weather, of course, but if you’re not on a tight schedule you can afford to hang about for it. Some lovely photos here, and I’d be very tempted to let Brian drive me up there. 🙂 🙂

Jo, the Picos are perfect for a road trip. I think you would love this area, so many amazing hikes, particularly the Cares Gorge is breathtakingly gorgeous and so accessible. But there are many other great hikes and activities in this area 🙂

Great post, really interesting, the mountains look stunning

Thank you, these mountain range is so gorgeous and very accessible from the UK.

So weird to read your post on the Picos we loved the north of Spain and the Picos in particular. It is so odd to see the same places and similar pictures (better composed than mine) wishing you the very best on your Thai adventure.

David and Karen

David, thank you so much for your generous comment. I am so glad that this post has brought back some nice memories from the Picos de Europa. You are too kind about my pictures. I think I probably took far too many pictures there, difficult not to overdo it, since it is such a photogenic region. We are really enjoying SE Asia, but unfortunately I am well behind with my blogging. Best wishes to you and Karen.

In these times when travelling is banned, I keep returning to your virtual travels. It’s fun to read about your adventures and dream about one day be on the road again. After having read this post, I definitely want to visit the Cares Gorge one day. Take care, my travelling friend.

Otto, I wake up every day full of hope for good news and wishing traveling would be allowed again. Thank you for your comment here and giving me another opportunity to look back on at this road trip. Virtual travelling is all we can do at the moment. I really think you would enjoy hiking and photographing your way through the Cares Gorge, I hope that you will make it there in a near future. Likewise look after yourself Otto. We will be travelling again in a not too distant future ( I hope), but we just need to be patient for now. Meanwhile I am enjoying your photos from near your home.

Thanks for another enjoyable post.

I am glad you have enjoyed this post. It is a beautiful region, there are so many interesting things to do, history and great food and wine.

Hi this is a really useful article. Wondering where the photo at the top of the page is taken ? Did you park your van there overnight? Thanks jo

Hi Jo, Apologies for this late reply, December has been a very hectic month for us. The photo was taken at Fuente De car park, we stopped here to take a cable car ride up into the mountains. The mountain rage is beautiful and there are many amazing hiking trails up there. The car park was free when we visited (2019), it was possible to stay overnight. But we did not stay here overnight, since we decided to move onto Potes. We loved this region of Spain, best wishes.

I would love to hear from you, leave a reply. Cancel reply

tour jeep picos de europa

Day 1: Arrive Santander – travel to Espinama (677m)

Arrive in Santander, Pick up from Santander airport by mini-bus for 2.5hr journey into Picos de Europa. Overnight Nevandi Guest house. Nevandi Guesthouse is a choice and chilled family run guest house amazing hospitality, food is great, if only you could keep it as fresh as it tastes on the table each day. Introduction and tour briefing with nice red wine. Sounds Nice?

Day 2: Espinama (677m)

Espinama is a sleepy village nestled at the south side of the central Picos Massif. Our first day is a relaxing 4km three hour hike on the slopes above Tama, a village on the other side of regional centre Potes, a short drive down the valley from Espinama. The hike is to the amazing Banda de Tejos, an ancient grove of Yew trees at 1000m, which sheltered a community fleeing Roman invasion. A great half day to warm the legs and meet the rest of your walking group, following by a convivial meal together in Nevandi Guest house.

Day 3: Espinama to Sotres (10km) (1050m)

An moderate 4-5hr introductory walk in the valley connecting Espinama to Sotres, an idyllic village nestled in the heart of the Picos approx 10km to the north. The ascent is gifted by an early ride on the cable car at Fuente De to 1000m, and our first views of the Picos ‘peaks’ proper from the top. Then we head north in the flat valley with mountains on both sides of the trail, stopping for a packed lunch in a meadow in Vegas de Piedra Lle, a Berger village en route. A short uphill in the final half km takes us to Sotres and refreshments! Stay at family guest house and experience the best Spanish dining.

Day 4: Sotres to Bulnes (7km) (550m)

A short descent from the village of Sotres is following by an ascending trail to Terenosa (1200m), a 3km walk from the village. [From here a challenging alternative route is the 5km ascent to the magnificent Naranjo de Bulnes (1960m), a Tor rock dominating the entire central massif of the Picos. Following lunch at the Refugio de Uriellu in the shadow of Naranjo de Bulnes, a 4km descent brings you to Bulnes village.] For easy to moderate legs, the route from Terenosa goes downhill, through alpine meadows with magnificent views of the Naranjo de Bulnes to the south. Grazing goats and cattle nibble the alpine flora and a 3km descent sees you into Bulnes village nestled at the head of a quiet valley, serviced not by road, but a funicular rail link. We lodge in the convivial Albergue de Cabrales (no goats indoors!)

Day 5:Bulnes to Cain (12km) via ‘Ruta de Cares’ or Cares Gorge (480m)

For those suffering any excesses from the challenging route of the day prior, the 2km funicular rail descent to Poncebos for the start of the day can be a welcome option. Otherwise the 1 hour descent by foot is one of the flavours of the central massif. At Poncebos the funicular and trail meet at the eastern end of the ‘Ruta de Cares’ or Cares Gorge. Sometimes described as the most stunning walk in Europe, the ‘Ruta de Cares’ is a 10km gorge walk extraordinaire. Using a path established for an innovative hydro-electric canal in the early 1900’s, the trail ascent to the south of the river and reaches 200-400 meters above the river bed. Dramatic views and a trail cut through solid rock in places are not for the vertiginous, but as one of the most popular routes in the entire Picos, are well trod and convivial. We overnight in the family run Alberque el Diablo de la Pena.

Day 6: Cain and surrounds (4-8km)

Having walked from the principality of Cantabria right into Castille y Leon the previous day, Cain is a tiny mountain village supporting a few guest houses and corner shops in a spectacular cauldron of mountains at the head of Cares gorge and valley. As the final walking day, the routes around the village allow for a pleasant warm-down and offer all grades of terrain and length depending on your energy levels. Traditional coppicing and small-hold agriculture and husbandry (including bee-keeping) are much in evidence and a pleasure to explore on a relaxing day walk. Tonight we get picked up by our transporter from cain to Espenama and agin we stay in Navandi.

Day 7: Potes & St Vincente De la Barquera

Our final day is a relaxed day shopping and sight-seeing in beautiful coastal town, 1 hour bus ride to St Vincente de la Barquera, a picturesque village on the northern coastline, afternoon you reach here and relax on the beach and explore markets. Here we have a farewell evening meal and celebration with your group. Overnight in a city centre guesthouse.

Day 8: Home

We drop you to Airport today and good bye till next trip.
