7 Top Sundarban Tour Operators and Packages

There are many Sundarban tour operators that offer different types of package tours to the Sundarbans National Park in West Bengal. Most are predefined group tours with fixed itineraries and can either be day tours, overnight, or multiple nights with set accommodations included. You will be picked up from Kolkata and dropped back there and can either stay aboard a boat or on land. Hotels and resorts also provide their guests with tour packages.

Help Tourism Sundarbans Jungle Camp

Help Tourism specializes in purposeful, eco-friendly travel to natural areas in east and northeast India. The organization has its own "resort", the Sundarbans Jungle Camp on Bali Island, and boats for river cruises. The resort was built in partnership with locals to provide them with a livelihood and reduce tiger-human conflict. Its six comfortable, ethnic thatched cottages with modern attached bathrooms are located on the banks of the Bidya river. Locals are all employed in the running of the resort and as guides.

Tour packages of various lengths from two to four nights are available. Expect to pay around 40,000 rupees for a private three-day package for two people. This includes transport from Kolkata, accommodations, all meals, boat cruises, naturalist and local guide, park entrance fees, village experience, and country boat ride. Special birding tours are also possible. Bookings can be made through the Help Tourism website, although unfortunately, it's not very ​user-friendly.

Tour de Sundarban

Tour de Sundarban (also known as Backpackers) has its own exclusive purpose-built accommodations and boats as well. The solar-powered Eco Village, located on Satjelia island, has 20 mud cottages with attached western bathrooms, hammocks, and a community center for travelers to hang out in. The company was founded by three "brothers" (they are actually an uncle, nephew, and cousin), who were so inspired by a visit to the Sundarbans that they decided to start taking other people on trips there.

Their tours are most suited to energetic, adventurous and sociable people, who are not looking for luxuries—but rather a village feel, fun ambiance, and value for money. The accommodations are rustic and local transport, including ferries and rickshaws, is used (which is all part of having an authentic experience).

Two and three-day packages are offered, as well as day tours. Their rates include transport, accommodation, Bengali food, permits, boat safari, village walk, and evening performances from local musicians. Expect to pay 5,500 rupees per person for two night, three days. There is an option to spend one night on the boat. Tours are usually limited to 15 people. One-day tours are possible for groups of four or more. The cost is 3,000 rupees per person.

Sundarban Chalo

Sundarban Chalo is another tour company, run by a group of four brothers, that provides budget backpacker-style tours to the Sundarbans. The tours are similar to those offered by Tour de Sundarban. The main difference is the accommodations, which are non-exclusive. Guests stay in basic cottages at a "resort" in Pakhiralay on Gosaba Island, near where the main market is. Again, don't expect luxuries or resort-style facilities. The tour includes a sunset at the Sundarban Bird Jungle, local village walk, and visits to Hamilton Bungalow and Rabindranath Tagore Bungalow. Sundarban Chalo also operates a day tour from Kolkata. The price for group tours ranges from 2,800 rupees per person for one day, increasing to 5,300 to 6,800 rupees per person for three days. The company conducts the tours using its own boat, built in 2015.

Sundarban Eco Tourism

Based in Gosaba, at the entrance to Sundarbans National Park, Sundarban Eco Tourism is popular with domestic Indian tourists. The company has been in business since 2015 and offers reasonably priced tour packages ranging from one to three days. The tours depart from Kolkata, and guests can opt to travel either by train (the cheapest way) or car. Expect to pay 2,600 rupees per person for a one-day package by car. A three-day package by car costs 5,000-7,000 rupees per person, depending on the number of jungle safaris. Accommodations are provided in decent budget hotels in Pakhiralay.

If you'd prefer to stay on a boat rather than on land, and you're looking for a private and personalized tour experience with a touch of luxury, check out Sundarban Houseboat. The unique boat has been specially designed and renovated to provide ​inviting classy hotel-style accommodations. You won't need to sacrifice comfort to stay on this boat. There are three bedrooms, all with attached western bathrooms, that can accommodate groups of 14 to 25 people in total. Facilities include air conditioning, flat screen TVs in all rooms, living and dining room with sofas, kitchen with gourmet chef, sun deck with loungers, library, games, and movies.

Packages are available for a duration of one to four nights (or more, on request!), visiting various watchtowers, islands, and villages. The boat can be hired exclusively, or on a per room basis. Rates vary according to guest requirements. Book as far in advance as possible because it is popular!

Vivada Sundarban Cruises

Another option for a luxury Sundarban cruise is aboard Vivada's M.V. Paramhamsa. This huge cruiser has four decks with 16 state cabins of 165 square feet and, 10 state cabins of 135 sqaure feet, as well as a sun deck, bar, restaurant, coffee shop, and massage parlor with steam and sauna room. The boat sails to the Sundarbans weekly from Kolkata, with three-night packages available. Day trips and excursions along creeks are organized in a smaller vessel, and there are numerous opportunities for village visits. Cultural programs also take place in the evenings on the boat's sundeck. Rates start from around 50,000 rupees per person for three nights.

The organization has two large cruisers, Sarbajaya (the better of the two) and Chitralekha. The one-night tour package includes visits to Sudhanyakhali, Sajnekhali, and Dobanki watchtowers. The two-night package includes an additional visit to Jhingakhali watchtower.

What you need to keep in mind when booking these tours is that the boats can not travel through the more narrow waterways due to their large size. Being restricted to wide waterways means less chance of wildlife sightings. Plus, these are group tours with up to 50 people. Expect to pay around 6,500 rupees per person for two nights.

9:30 a.m : In the morning, we’ll set off on a thrilling boat safari through the rivers, islands, and small creeks of the Tiger Reserve area to see wildlife like spotted deer, crocodiles, wild boars, snakes, water monitor lizards, and, of course, Royal Bengal tigers ( if you are lucky).

12:30 p.m : Do-Banki Tiger Reserve Area and Watch Tower, Do Banki’s 896-meter canopy walk allows visitors to observe wildlife from the safety of a cage.

1:30 p.m : Planned Activity: Seeing the Confluence of the Panchamukhni and the Fifth River at 1:30 p.m.

Day-1: Khulna – Harbaria – Kotka

• Meet at Khulna Jahaj Ghat at 7.00 am, transfer to our waiting boat, and start immediately toward Sundarban. Breakfast will be served on the ship. 
• Reach Harbaria Eco-Tourism Center in the afternoon. Walk inside the forest and have the first experience of Sundarban Mangrove Forest.
• Back to the ship and start for Kotka. Reach Kotka around 11.00 am, and overnight stay on the ship. Lunch and dinner will be served on the ship.

Day-2: Kotka – Hiron Point

• Early in the morning, go for a ride on a noiseless wooden boat, and explore the creeks and canals of Sundarban searching for wildlife and many different birds.
• Back to the ship and have breakfast.
• Visit Kotka Wildlife Sanctuary, where you’ll encounter a lot of wildlife. 
• Return to the ship and start for Hiron Point. Lunch will be served on the way. 
• Reach Hiron Point in the late afternoon, and walk in the jungle for some time. 
• Start for Dublar Char in the evening and reach at night. Overnight stay on the ship at Dublar Char.

Day-3: Dublar Char – Koromjol – Khulna

• Explore Dublar Char in the morning and enjoy the fishing activities. Fishermen come here for a few months during winter to catch fish in the Bay of Bengal. They live here during this time in temporary houses.
• Back to the ship and start for Koromjol Eco-Tourism Center. Breakfast will be served on the way.
• Reach Koromjol Eco-Tourism Center around 3.00 pm. Walk on the trail inside Koromjol Eco-Tourism Center, watch the Sundarban Mangrove Forest from the observation tower, and visit the Crocodile Breeding Center.

• Cancellation procedure: If you want to cancel any confirmed booking, you need to do that by replying to the booking email of the tour. No cancellation will be accepted without a written email. The time of receiving the email will be considered as the time of cancellation.
• Cancellation before 7 days of the tour: 25% of the tour price will be deducted, and the rest of the deposit will be refunded.
• Cancellation between 7 days and 48 hours before the tour: 50% of the total tour price will be deducted, and the rest of the deposit will be refunded.
• Cancellation between 48 hours and 24 hours before the tour: 75% of the total tour price will be deducted, and the rest of the deposit will be refunded.
• Cancellation in less than 24 hours before the tour: No refund will be provided. Also, it will not be possible to move the tour to another date.
• Cancellation by BTA Holidays: If we cancel the tour because of bad weather or any national emergency, or any other unavoidable circumstances, 100% of your deposit will be refunded.
• The itinerary of the Sundarban Tour will change depending on tide and season. But we’ll do our best to visit all the places mentioned.
• Wear shoes with a belt on the backside and waterproof, which are strong enough for walking a lot. Do not wear a high hill or any formal shoes.
• Wear clothes which are not tight. Wear something comfortable. Do not wear jeans.
• Bring a binocular if you have, to watch wildlife on Sundarban better.
• Bring medicine for fever, pain, vomiting, diarrhea, headache, and other common diseases. There is no hospital or pharmacy inside Sundarban.
• Sundarban is a sensitive ecosystem. Do not talk loudly or make noise while inside Sundarban.
• Be completely quiet and do not talk during the boat rides on small canals or while walking inside the forest, to not scare the wildlife.
• Do not stand on the boat during the ride on the canals. Remain seated in your place and enjoy the tranquility of Sundarban.
• Do not tear leaves or flowers from any tree inside Sundarban. Leave no mark of your visit. Only bring happy memories at home.

From Kolkata:

Located southeast in West Bengal, the inhabited islands of Sundarbans are accessible via both roadways and railways from Kolkata . 

Kaikhali:  Lying at a distance of 92 km from Kolkata airport, it is not so far away from the highest watchtower of Sundarbans, i.e., the Bonnie Camp. This 50 ft tall camp also facilitates an overnight stay. Other sites such as Halliday wildlife sanctuary, Kalas Islands, and the beach are also accessible. 

Canning:  Only 45 km from Kolkata, this railway head is nearest to Sundarbans Tiger Project. You can travel via public transportation to Godakhali port as well, which is 29 km away.

Godkhali port:  It is 82 km from Kolkata and 95 km from Netaji Subhas Chandra Bose International Airport, Kolkata. It is the last island and is close to the Sajnekhali Wildlife sanctuary and Sundarbans Tiger project.

Namkhana:  Farthest from Kolkata, Namkhana is 123 km from Kolkata airport. It is close to the Lothian wildlife sanctuary and Bhagabatpur crocodile project.

Best time to visit Sundarbans

The winters are the best time to get the best out of your Solo Travel Journey to the Sundarbans. The weather is more pleasant compared to any other time of the year. Also, the chances of wildlife sightings are considerably high. The animals come out from the dense greens at daytime to bask in the warmth of the sun.

A boat safari is also a good choice for experiencing a lucky encounter with a swimming Bengal Tiger and also enjoying the local food available on these floating boats. So, conclusively, the months from October to March are best suited for a Jungle Safari in Sundarbans Forests.

The other months are not so comfortable for Sundarbans visits for one or the other reason.

The hot temperatures reaching 30-42 degrees Celsius from April to June are too hot and humid for tourists to bear. Moreover, the heavy rainfall of the monsoon from July to September raises river water to dangerous levels.

What to shop

• Wild Honey extracted from the jaw of the Royal Bengal Tiger is collected by the locals during April – May. You can either sample it or even buy some for yourself or your family.
• Beautiful articles which the local people skillfully handcraft are good mementos to bring back home or gift your friends and family members after returning from your solo travel.
• Sundarbans is also famous for its organic brown rice, which is good for your health and tastes terrific.  

Where to stay in Sundarbans

Considering the ecological sensitivity and focusing on the eco-friendly aspect of the forests, the stays are given a village feel rather than a luxurious touch. Most hotels run on solar power or a generator. If you want a unique experience, you can choose to stay on a houseboat.

The sandy beach is spotted with red crabs and the area contains three tiger hills. It is also a great base for safaris, and bird-watching. If you are lucky, you may even spot a Royal Bengal Tiger! How to go? It is not practicable to go to the Sundarbans directly from Dhaka, although there were a few ships that used to take this route in the past, but now they are mostly halted or irregular. The easiest and most practiced method is to take a bus to Khulna or Mongla and then your trip provider will set you up on a ship. Although Khulna has better facilities in many ways, the completion of The Padma Bridge has made Mongla a popular docking point as well. Alternatively, you can travel to Jessore by plane and then take a one-hour bus ride to Khulna. Although you can opt for pvt car (by extra payment) in a sharing Sundarban tour , we may allow you pickup and drop from your home (Within Kolkata).

In case of drop-in time, many travellers request to drop elsewhere other than Science City. Please keep in mind our commitment is from Science City to Science City, so if you need to drop-in elsewhere you can talk directly to the driver about extra payment and his availability.

Waiting Time : During 1st Day Car Drop-in Time and Boat Check-in Time is not always possible to maintain accurately. So, you may wait in parking area 15 to 30 mins (We always prefer not to wait).

I had a 1 night/2day tour for Sundarban from Kolkata. The tour was awesome. Excellent hospitality, food, journey and all facilities even in remote location. Local fork dance made all of us dance. Could see wild boar, monitor lizard, whistling birds, white duck, kingfisher bird. The ride on boat was very mesmerising and close to nature. Manager Keith was very helpful, calm and supporting in every manner.

Visited the Sunderbans for a college excursion and oh my lord it was beautiful! Especially the launch ride on the Vidyadhari! Our tour guide Keith was such a great company! Only had an issue with the water supply in the hotel. The food served was sumptuous; never have i expected that level of delicacy there! In a word the entire experience was ethereal!

We had a 3 days and 2 nights trip with Eco tourism and it was a very good experience overall.The stay was good,food was homely and descent.Though we were not lucky to spot the Royal Bengal tiger but the tour manager Keith made sure that we enjoyed the rest of the wildlife of Sundarban.The rest of the staff were well behaved and made every effort to make our stay comfortable and tour fun.

It was beautiful for small mind freshener. We have taken two days and one night trip. Lunch, evening snacks and diner are awesome in hotel, in boat foods are also good but some jungle foods like honey crabs and wild fishes are may be subjected to early request. They provide inova for transportation which is a great deal in that budget trip. Overall enjoyed every second... Specifically the guide Mr. Keith is a fantastic guy for entire trip.

It was my 2nd tym experience and this time it was good the property was okay food was good and the service was brilliant specially the manager out there Mr KeiTh , experienced the thrill of JuNGle with SunderBan Eco Tourism , The co-operation was good enough and about animal just got to see some Crocodiles, Birds, Turtle's but do try ur luck for Bengal Tigers.
