Goa

Dudhsagar Falls of Goa is a majestic waterfall where the white water gushing through the steep and vertical face of the mountain portrays a cascading effect. Standing as tall as 310 metres, it makes sure to stand in the list of tallest waterfalls in India. The cascading effect of this waterfall gives rise to the illusion of a milky white sea falling from such a great height. This is how the Falls acquired its name – Dudhsagar Falls. The four-tiered waterfall marks its presence along the Mandovi River in the Sanguem taluka (Goa). The main river of Goa – Mandovi, originating from the Deccan Plateau winds its way through the twists and turns of the Western Ghats. As soon as the river plummets through the hilly cover lying along the borders of Karnataka and Goa, it transforms into Dudhsagar Falls. The moment the water gushing out from the Falls flow towards its feet, it forms a green pool at its base. It is from here that the water of the Dudhsagar Falls starts flowing westwards to join and be a part of the mighty Arabian Sea. The entire landmark in the backdrop of the falls is covered with a vastly stretched forest cover. This is how the Dudhsagar Falls form a part of Bhagwan Mahavir Wildlife Sanctuary. Embark the wildlife researching skills within you as there this sanctuary shelters a plethora of wildlife. In the past few years, the popularity of the Dudhsagar Falls has increased ten-fold as one of the most preferred weekend getaways from each of the cities of Bangalore, Mumbai, and Pune. If you’ve got a big group or a family, you surely must check-in the Dudhsagar Falls for a short family outing.

It is believed that she was both a princess and a noted scholar, who became a Christian at around the age of 14 and also converted hundreds of people to Christianity, and was martyred around the age of 18. Catherine was known to be a spiritual pathfinder and raise her voice against the oppression of the Christians under the rule of Roman emperor Maxentius. She was so strong and logical with her arguments that the king himself was incapable of countering them and has a then he formed a committee of 50 philosophers to debate her ideas. However, even the assembly conceded defeat in front of her and confessed Christianity as their belief. Out of anger, the king burnt the philosophers alive and sentenced st.catherine to prison. Catherine did not give up, and she was succeeded in converting not only the jailers but also the king's wife. It is believed that she showed the path of Christianity to 200 people. Even when she was facing the worse condition of her life, she continued to stretch the word of Jesus. She was honoured with the title of"patroness of the wheel-wrights" because it is believed then when she was fastened to a spiked wheel as it was mentioned in her death sentence the wheel broke and she was left uninjured. And when she was finally beheaded, it is said that angle took her remains and laid them to rest atop Mount Sinai. When you visit the Se Cathedral, you can witness the Saint Catherine ornaments, a crown portraying her royal birth and has a book in her hands, which signifies her sound knowledge as she points a spiked wheel, which reveals her martyrdom.Se Cathedral HistoryThe Cathedral is devoted to St. Catherine of Alexandria, it is said that it was built to celebrate the victory of the Portuguese ruler Alfonso Albuquerque who destroyed the Muslim army and took ownership of the city of Goa. Consequently, it is also called St. Catherine's' Cathedral. In 1953, the Cathedral was presented with "The Golden Rose" by Venerable Pope Pius XII. It is a gold ornament, which the Popes of the Catholic Church have traditionally favoured and given as a symbol of devotion or affection. You can witness it as it is placed on the tomb of St. Francis Xavier. It was approved by Governor George Cabral to be spread in 1552 on the remains of an earlier structure. The formation of the church began in 1562. The church was completed in 1619 and was consecrated in 1640.  It is a perfect place to experience a blend of peace and tranquillity. You will be filled with positivity when you will visit this sacred place. The architecture of Se Cathedral  The architecture of Se Cathedral is awe-inspiring and elegant. The architectural style is a blend of Gothic elements and typical Portuguese style, or you can say that the architecture style of the Se Cathedral is Portuguese-Manueline. There were two different techniques that were opted to make the church. The exterior was made in Tuscan style and the interior has been built in and Corinthian style. With dimensions of 250 feet long and 181 feet wide, this church has a  delightfully decorated entrance that measures around 115 feet in height. The church is amazingly decorated, yet the style is intriguing and simple. The Cathedral has been built on an elevated base of laterite, which is covered with the thick lime plaster. You can also see the bell tower which is located on the southern side of the façade. The building of the church is rectangular on the plan but has a cruciform layout in the interior. The main altar is devoted to Catherine of Alexandria, and you can also see several old paintings on either side of it. You can also see the Chapel, which is known as the Cross of Miracles, it is believed that there was an image of Christ that was said to have appeared in 1619.

Located in the Southern taluka of Canacona the fall is situated in an idyllic Kuskem village around 20km from the Cotigao wildlife sanctuary off NH 17. And there’s something else to add to the area’s beauty! The many Goa waterfalls are just awe-inspiring. Here are the best ones to visit…

I just LOVE a good waterfall! Whilst there are many wonderful beaches in Goa, no trip is complete without a visit to at least one Goa waterfall. Here are my favourite waterfalls in this beautiful Indian state.

Goa waterfalls

This Goa waterfall, located in the South Goa, can be found in the Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary. Also known as the Savari Waterfall, it is one of Goa’s most popular attractions.

Netravali Waterfall is absolutely beautiful!

The waterfall is the perfect spot for bird watching, and of course there is plenty of wildlife to see in the area.

There is a natural fish spa and you are welcome to take a dip here.

The waterfall itself is around 10-15 minutes from the car park by foot; entry fees to the park are 25 INR per person.

Be sure to wear plenty of mosquito repellent!

One of the lesser-known Goa waterfalls, Kuskem is small but stunning.

The milky water becomes practically transparent where it falls at the bottom. You can trek here from Hathipol, and adventure enthusiasts love it.

It is best visited during monsoon season, so be sure to wear practical shoes and watch your step.

The surrounding area is green and lush, and you’ll be able to get some gorgeous waterfall shots here.

This is definitely one of the most natural waterfalls in Goa, and it is rarely crowded!

Goa waterfalls

This is definitely the most popular of all of the Goa waterfalls.

It is a four-tiered waterfall, found on the Mandovi River. Dudhsagar is one of India’s tallest waterfalls, at 1017 ft.

Visiting after monsoon season is ideal – any time between October and May is likely to be fantastic.

INTERESTING INFO: the name Dudhsagar translates to sea of milk, alluding to the white spray that the waterfall produces. It also refers to a legend regarding a princess who bathed there daily. A passer-by stopped and the princess poured a jug of milk in front of herself, as if to create a curtain to protect her dignity until the maid could bring her some clothes.

The gate to the area is open from 6.30 am until 5.00 pm. Previous visitors recommend heading there early as it will be quieter and you’ll have more time to explore the falls without oppressive heat.

It costs 400 INR to visit the Dudhsagar Waterfall in a jeep safari.

**Click here to book your trip to Dudhsagar Waterfall**

Goa waterfalls

In Chorla, not far from Goa-Charnatka border, you’ll find one of the must-see Goa waterfalls- Sada Falls.

Sada Falls can be reached after a tough walk. But it’s worth it for the ambience here; as waterfalls go, it’s one of the most peaceful and serene. Decent shoes are an essential!

It isn’t for the faint hearted but if your fitness levels are up for it and you like a bit of adventure on your travels, then this is makes for a great day out during your trip to Goa.

The water falls between two hills and has been created over centuries – it’s breathtaking.

Goa waterfalls

A truly impressive waterfall by anyone’s standards, Amboli Waterfall is one that should definitely be on your list.

You can park here, or there is a bus stop around 3 km away from the waterfall itself should you not wish to hire a car/driver in Goa.

With clear and cold water to bathe in, and steps to climb under the spray of the waterfall, you should absolutely pack a towel and potentially a change of clothes when visiting the Amboli Waterfall.

The water falls fast and it is just beautiful here.

There are food trucks should you wish to get something to eat while you’re visiting this popular waterfall.

Exploring the Enchanting Netravali Waterfalls: A Hidden Gem in Goa’s Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary

  • , July 16, 2023

Netravali Waterfalls

One of Goa’s most beautiful waterfalls, Netravali Waterfalls spans a wide 211 sq km protected land area. The waterfalls are protected from exploitation because they are located within a nature sanctuary. It is a well-liked destination in Goa and is very busy on the weekends. Few people are likely to be familiar with the Netravali Waterfall because of its placement within the Netravali Nature Reserve. To reach the waterfall, you must hike 2 kilometres through the reserve with a guide.

The landscape around the waterfalls is peaceful, refreshing, and welcoming. The waterfall is referred to as “Savri Waterfalls” rather than “ Netravali Waterfalls ” in its native tongue, so keep that in mind.

Best Time to Visit : The monsoon season is the ideal time to explore the Netravali waterfall. It is located in the middle of a large forest. It’s an extraordinarily beautiful sight to see the waterfall cutting through the dense forest and gently pouring into the pond at the bottom.

History-Netravali Waterfalls

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Suchandra Mondal (@_kuusumm_)

The waterfall is situated in the Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary, which has a noteworthy past. It is well known that the sanctuary is a part of Goa’s greater historical environment, which has seen the influence of numerous civilizations and colonial forces throughout the years. Goa, a former Portuguese colony, has a lengthy history that dates back to the beginning of time. Before being ruled by several Islamic dynasties, the region was ruled by multiple royal families, among them the Mauryas, Satavahanas, and Chalukyas.

The Portuguese first arrived in Goa in 1510 and quickly made themselves at home, beginning a period of colonialism that lasted for more than four centuries until 1961, when Goa became a part of independent India. The particular historical information regarding the Netravali Waterfalls may not be well documented, but it is nevertheless a significant natural attraction in the Goa state that gives tourists a glimpse into the area’s biodiversity and natural beauty.

Features and Beauty of Netravali Waterfalls

  • Location: The Netravali Waterfalls, commonly referred to as Netravali Bubbling Lake and Bubble Lake, are situated in South Goa, India’s Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary. The refuge is renowned for its abundant biodiversity and verdant surroundings.
  • Natural Beauty: The Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary’s lush woodlands are home to the tranquil and gorgeous Netravali Waterfalls. The water exclaims over the stones and makes a pool at the bottom of the waterfall as it cascades down from a great height. It is a beautiful and peaceful location because of the vivid vegetation in the surrounding area.
  • Bubbling Lake: One distinctive aspect of the Netravali Waterfalls is the existence of a phenomenon known as the “Bubbling Lake” or “Bubble Lake.” The carbon dioxide gas bubbles that appear from the lake bed in a tiny pool or pond close to the waterfall provide an eye-catching visual impact. The discharge of subsurface gases causes the bubbling effect, which adds a fascinating element to the whole experience.
  • Ecotourism: The nearby sanctuary and the Netravali Waterfalls encourage tourists to respect and preserve the region’s natural heritage. The management of the refuge has taken steps to safeguard the waterfall’s unspoiled beauty, wildlife, and ecological balance.
  • Nature Photography: Netravali Waterfalls and the surrounding wilderness provide ample opportunities for nature photography. Capture the breathtaking views, unique rock formations, vibrant flora, and cascading water to preserve the memories of your visit.

Activities to Enjoy- Netravali Waterfalls

View this post on Instagram A post shared by Kimberly Lobo – Goa🌴 (@kimberlities)
  • Trails: Trails for hiking and experiencing the natural world: Netravali Waterfalls provides options for both. Visitors may fully immerse themselves in the area’s natural splendor thanks to the marked trekking trails that lead to the waterfall. Depending on the path taken, the trip can range from mild to difficult, however, it provides a chance to see the varied vegetation.
  • Wildlife and bird watching: A large number of different plant and animal species may be found in the Netravali Wildlife Sanctuary. You could come across a variety of animals on your way to the waterfall, such as butterflies, birds, reptiles, and small mammals. Numerous bird species, such as Malabar pied hornbills, grey-headed mynas, and emerald doves, among others, are visible to birdwatchers.
  • Enjoy Waterfall: Take time to savor the waterfall’s splendor. The Netravali Waterfalls are breathtaking. Enjoy the magnificent image of the water forming a pool at the bottom as it falls. If it’s safe to do so, you can cool off by the waterfall, put your feet in the water, or go swimming to cool off.

If you are in Panaji and looking for places to visit in Goa in one day, then add Kesarval Falls to your plan. The waterfalls are so named, as the word, ‘Kesarval’ is derived from the regional word for eagles; it is believed that in earlier times, eagles made their nests on the surrounding cliffs. The waterfall might be small in size, but it doesn’t take away from its popularity among tourists, as its waters are said to have medicinal properties.

  • Distance from Panaji : 19.2 km

6. Bamanbudo Falls, Goa

A well-maintained road makes Bamanbudo Falls among the easiest to reach in the state. This is why it is relatively more popular than some other waterfalls in Goa. A two or three-stepped cascade, depending on how you view it, it is a great spot to play in the cool water amidst lush greenery. Plus, its plunge pool is not too deep as the water doesn’t fall straight down. So, gather your group, and come here for a memorable outing with lots of fun.

Set within Cotigao Wildlife Sanctuary, this is yet another waterfall in Goa, the trek to which can potentially treat you to the sight of the rich regional wildlife. Now, this is a proper water-fall, as the water drops almost straight into the plunge pool from a significant height. So, if you want to take a natural shower, this is the one to visit. Sada Falls | #8 of 11 Waterfalls in Goa

9. Charavane Falls, Goa

Among the lesser-known waterfalls in Goa, this one is perfect for those who want to leave the city or even Goa’s tourist madness behind and just relax in solitude for a while. Charavane Falls again is within a protected territory (Mhadei Wildlife Sanctuary), so the chances of coming across animals and birds are quite high. Charavane Falls makes its way through a series of steps, naturally carved by the flowing river on the cliff.
