M. Ward announces Australian tour for 2023

The tour will celebrate the 20th anniversary of the singer's 2003 album 'Transfiguration Of Vincent'

m ward australian tour

M. Ward has announced an Australian tour slated for 2023, in celebration of the 20th anniversary of ‘Transfiguration Of Vincent’.

The American singer-songwriter will embark on the seven-date Australian tour in February of next year. M. Ward will first take to Sydney’s Factory Theatre on February 2, before consecutive shows in Canberra, Queenscliff and Castlemaine the following three evenings.

Ward will wrap up the tour with its three remaining shows in Melbourne, Brisbane and Northern Rivers from February 7 to 10. See the full list of M. Ward’s Australian tour dates below. Tickets will be available next Tuesday (November 8) here .

The tour will mark M. Ward’s first Australian appearances since 2011, when he embarked on a string of shows with Holly Throsby. The upcoming run will coincide with the 20th anniversary of the singer’s third studio album, ‘Transfiguration Of Vincent’, which was released in 2003. That record was inspired by John Fahey’s 1965 album ‘The Transfiguration Of Blind Joe Death’.

Since then, M. Ward has released eight more solo albums, the last two of which – titled ‘Migration Stories’ and ‘Think of Spring’ – arrived in 2020. In a four-star review of 2012’s ‘A Wasteland Companion’, NME praised the album’s “quieter moments” and concluded that “you couldn’t ask for much more” from the singer.

Aside from his solo work, M. Ward elsewhere forms one half of the music music duo She & Him , alongside actress and musician Zooey Deschanel. The pair this year released their eighth studio album ‘Melt Away’, which was billed as a tribute to Beach Boys co-founder Brian Wilson. The duo’s tour for that album took place earlier this year. Ward is also a member of the indie supergroup Monsters of Folk, who’s last self-titled album arrived in 2009. Ward’s 2023 Australian tour dates are: FEBRUARY: Thusday 2 – Factory Theatre, Sydney Friday 3 – Canberra Theatre Saturday 4 – Queenscliff Town Hall Sunday 5 – Theatre Royal, Castlemaine Tuesday 7 – Brunswick Ballroom, Melbourne Friday 10 – The Zoo, Brisbane Sat 11 Feb – Eltham Hotel, Northern Rivers

Can you believe it's been almost a decade since M. Ward last visited Australia?

The revered Portland singer-songwriter will make up for lost time in February of 2023, announcing a seven-date tour of the country that will see him explore one of his most celebrated works.

In 2003, Ward released his acclaimed third album Transfiguration of Vincent , a bluesy indie-folk record that dealt through which he processed the passing of his friend Vincent O'Brien.

VINCENT O'BRIEN

The record proved a breakout moment for Ward, cementing him as one of the great indie songwriters of the era, a mark of distinction he hasn't lost in the 20 years since its release.

It also gave him a cult hit in his cover of David Bowie's 'Let's Dance', an ambitious song to cover and one that he did better than just about anyone.

Ward now has 10 solo records to his name and has also made a string of highly successful records with Zooey Deschanel as She & Him. So, there's plenty of catching up to be done when he finally makes his way to Australia early next year.

Ward will celebrate the 20th anniversary of his aforementioned third album on this visit and these shows are bound to bring plenty of memories flooding back as he works through the record's many excellent songs.

After kicking off in Sydney, M. Ward will travel to the east coast capitals, throwing a few regional dates in the mix as well.

Check out all the dates below. Tickets are on sale from 8am Monday 7 November.

M. Ward (born in 1974) is the stage name of American alternative-folk singer-songwriter and musician Matthew Stephen Ward, best known for his acclaimed solo work as well as contributions to the bands She & Him and Monsters of Folk, hailing from Ventura Country, California, U.S.

Raised on a diet of gospel and country music, the genres would prove to have a lasting impact on M. Ward’s musical output. Prior to pursuing a career as a solo artist, the singer-songwriter learned the tricks of the trade with the folk-rock trio Rodriguez for six years. Written in Chicago and on the road to his new home in Portland, Oregon, Ward’s solo debut “Duet for Guitars #2” was released in Howe Gelb’s Ow Om Records in 1999. The album propelled the singer to notoriety in underground circles and subsequently began touring around the U.S.

Issued by Future Farmer Records, Ward’s 2001 album “End of Amnesia” once again highlighted the musician’s bluesy, alternative appeal. The live album “Live Music & The Voice of Strangers” was later recorded and sold at live shows in 2001. Featuring a cover of David Bowie’s “Let’s Dance”, which also appeared in the film “Eagle vs Shark”, Ward’s third full-length album “Transfiguration of Vincent” arrived in 2003. On top of his own releases however, Ward is a regular collaborator with other musicians notably Cat Power, Neko Case, Beth Orton, and My Morning Jacket. In 2004 Ward appeared on The Late Late Show with Craig Kilborn as the guitarist in Bright Eyes, which earned a feature in Newsweek.

In 2005 the singer-songwriter issued the full-length “Transistor Radio”, which marked Ward’s earliest forays into the mainstream. Extolled by critics the record was released on Merge Records and features a cover of the Beach Boys’ track “You Still Believe in Me”. After releasing the full-length “Post-War” in 2006, the raspy voiced singer emerged alongside singer and actress Zooey Deschanel as the musical duo She & Him. The pair’s debut album “Volume One” arrived in 2008, produced entirely by Ward himself, and followed in 2010 by “Volume Two”. Featuring cutesy, romantically-inclined duets, Ward and Deschanel proved a popular pairing, subsequently releasing the albums “A Very She & Him Christmas” (2011), “Volume Three” (2013), and “Classics” (2014).

M. Ward’s subsequent solo album “Hold Time” arrived in 2009, and proved his highest-charting album to date, rising to No. 31 on the Billboard 200. The same year the singer founded the supergroup Monsters of Folk alongside Jim James, Conor Oberst, and Mike Mogis, and released a self-titled full-length. Peaking at No. 15 on the Billboard 200, the album was a popular release among fans and critics alike and led by the single “Say Please”. In 2012 Ward issued his seventh studio album “A Wasteland Companion”, which peaked at No. 21 on the Billboard 200.

Live reviews

Monday 21st May. Oslo, Hackney, London. M. Ward. So it’s to deepest Hipster Ville tonight with Birds Eye Andy although now to be known as Monster Energy Drink Andy. Luckily the message seems to have finally got through that long scraggly beards and short hair is not a good look as there is a distinct lack of hipsters on show. But hey I’m not sure a fifty year old, overweight man from the burbs is one to dish out fashion advice. Before the review proper it’s hot, damn hot and I mean the walls are sweating. Air con clearly on the skids and it’s a full house tonight to boot.

M. Ward is a singer songwriter from Portland, Oregon specialising is hushly vocalised folk, roots, Americana call it what you will. Nine albums in and probably more famous for being half of She and Him but also a fifth of Monster of Folk, Ward is the go to man to add his unique flourish to enhance anyone’s sound.

Its solo acoustic tonight, but when Ward opens with an instrumental number it’s as if there are three guitarists on stage. The speed of his fingers on the fret board is phenomenal as he plays the bass part overlaid with rhythm and then lead. I don’t know how he does it but it’s amazing. And to top it all he barely looks at the neck of the guitar.

We are then treated to ninety minutes of sublime song writing, witty self-deprecating banter and genuine love from the man. Without a new album to promote tracks are grabbed from throughout his career including ‘Sandman’ from the Monsters of Folk and there’s an airing for a new song ‘Miracle Man’. There are scattered impromptu singalongs from the knowledgeable crowd as early as about the third track.

I think M. Ward has a very British sound with his voice taking in elements of Nick Lowe and Ray Davies but with an added spoon of Americana and especially drawing a little vocally from his former band mate Conor Oberst. What’s refreshing tonight is there are no frills or countless re-tunings of guitars with the only breaks for when he puts on or takes off a harmonica. The live experience is not about sonic perfection, leave that in the studio, it’s about capturing and keeping a moment.

It’s been a great night and while there are musicians like Ward the world is certainly a better place and if only for ninety minutes we can forget what’s spinning outside of the club. Now grab me a water and a cold shower as even my sweat is perspiring.

‘Till the next time, keep on rockin’ y’all.

He’s probably best known, now, as one half of She & Him - with Zooey Deschanel as his opposite number, that particular band was never going to be a low-key affair - but M. Ward has delivered his best material under his own name, particularly on his early records. To be honest, his vast array of talent is criminally underused in She & Him, particularly in terms of his guitar playing; he’s a superb player, but rarely gets the chance to really spread his wings in that regard when Deschanel’s in tow.

In an ideal world, he’d tour with a backing band in his own right - he’s at his best, then, when he can recreate the fleshed-out studio versions of his songs - but his most recent appearances in the UK have been acoustic shows; he opened for Feist at a string of shows back in 2012, which would ultimately prove to be his only British promotion for his most recent record, A Wasteland Companion. He resisted the urge to drop She & Him tracks into the set, instead leaning heavily on his last three records, and closing the set by inviting Mountain Man, who served as Feist’s backing singers on the tour, to join him on a cover of Buddy Holly’s ‘Rave On’, which he delivered with such conviction that it sounded as if was meant to be performed in Ward’s husky drawl.

I've been to four concerts of M. Ward so far in London and every time he manages to give me goose bumps.

Great setlist including some less played songs such as Carolina, way more chatty than usual, two encores with the surprise of having Alessi's Ark to play as a backing band on Poison Cup.

I particularly enjoyed the solo/acoustic version of Primitive Girl and Rave on and his skills on the loop board on a couple of songs. The sound system at the venue was perfect, I have to say though that the temperature was way too high, they should invest in some air conditioning or even just fans if they want to host concerts in summer.

A charismatic, enigmatic showman with a truly amazing set that ran the range from growly-screechy-garagy R'n'R to solo mariachi guitar picking and the angriest most f***ed up Beatles cover you ever heard. And at all times, the band was sublime – brilliant, awe-inspiring, heart-warming musicianship. Just wonderful.

One of the best concerts I've been to.

Pretty much a one man show except for a guest on 3 or 4 songs. A very skilled musician with one of the coolest voices. M. Ward is at least as good if not better live than you hear him on his albums.

LES ANGLES – Grace Kim opened a four-stroke lead Friday in the LPGA Tour’s JM Eagle LA Championship, shooting a 5-under 66 in tricky afternoon conditions at Wilshire Country Club.

A stroke ahead after an opening 64, Kim had an eagle, four birdies and a bogey to get to 12-under 130. The 23-year-old Australian patiently worked her way around the tree-lined layup, trying not to get frustrated with the bumpy greens.

“I think the less thoughts, the better,” Kim said. “Obviously, during the afternoon round today, we’ve got poa annua greens so just have to stay patient with them. You can kind of see how it can get bumpy, so working with the course and not getting too wrapped up around putts not going in.”

Maja Stark was second after a 69, also in the afternoon.

"I feel like maybe not taking everything so personal because they are a little bit wobbly.” Stark said. “Especially late. Like the whole day pretty much the ball has been wobbling because there has been so many people walking on it.”

The Swede finished second last week in Texas in The Chevron Championship, two strokes behind top-ranked Nelly Korda in the first major of the year. Korda withdrew Monday, a day after her record-tying fifth straight victory.

Defending champion Hannah Green of Australia shot a 69 to join Germany's Esther Henseleit (68) at 6 under. Denmark's Kristine Pedersen (67) and American Auston Kim (71) were 5 under, and Rose Zhang (69) topped the group at 4 under.

Grace Kim won the LOTTE Championship last year in a playoff in Hawaii for her first LPGA Tour title. She missed the cut in The Chevron , shooting 76-72.

She started play Friday on the back nine, rebounding from a bogey on the par-3 12th with the eagle on the par-5 13th and a birdie on the par-4 14th. On 13, she hit a 5-wood to 10 feet. She added birdies on Nos. 3, 6 and 7 on the second nine.

“I think I’ve got to breathe a little bit,” she said. “I did get a little bit nervous on my back nine, so making sure I don’t rush too much and just staying in the present."

“I feel like maybe not taking everything so personal because they are a little bit wobbly.” Stark said.

Defending champion Hannah Green of Australia shot a 69 to join Germany’s Esther Henseleit (68) at 6 under. Denmark’s Kristine Pedersen (67) and American Auston Kim (71) were 5 under, and Rose Zhang (69) topped the group at 4 under.

“I did get a little bit nervous on my back nine, so making sure I don’t rush too much and just staying in the present.”

Fun facts from our Moscow Metro Tours:

From the very first days of its existence, the Moscow Metro was the object of civil defense, used as a bomb shelter, and designed as a defense for a possible attack on the Soviet Union.

At a depth of 50 to 120 meters lies the second, the coded system of Metro-2 of Moscow subway, which is equipped with everything you need, from food storage to the nuclear button.

According to some sources, the total length of Metro-2 reaches over 150 kilometers.

The Museum was opened on Sportivnaya metro station on November 6, 1967. It features the most interesting models of trains and stations.

Coffee Ring

The first scheme of Moscow Metro looked like a bunch of separate lines. Listen to a myth about Joseph Stalin and the main brown line of Moscow Metro.

Zodiac Metro

According to some astrologers, each of the 12 stops of the Moscow Ring Line corresponds to a particular sign of the zodiac and divides the city into astrological sector.

Astrologers believe that being in a particular zadiac sector of Moscow for a long time, you attract certain energy and events into your life.

Paleontological finds

Red marble walls of some of the Metro stations hide in themselves petrified inhabitants of ancient seas. Try and find some!

  • Every day each car in  Moscow metro passes  more than 600 km, which is the distance from Moscow to St. Petersburg.
  • Moscow subway system is the  5th in the intensity  of use (after the subways of Beijing, Tokyo, Seoul and Shanghai).
  • The interval in the movement of trains in rush hour is  90 seconds .
