About Generation Axe

Steve Vai, Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, Nuno Bettencourt, Tosin Abasi Announce 'Generation Axe' Tour

Steve Vai, Zakk Wylde, Yngwie Malmsteen, Nuno Bettencourt and Tosin Abasi are teaming up once again for the Generation Axe tour.

The Generation Axe tour will crisscross the United States from early November through mid-December. You can check out the full itinerary of the tour below.

"The Generation Axe show is a unique performance of five fiercely talented guitar players coming together to create a 6-string extravaganza that is sure to amaze and delight,” Vai said of the tour in a statement.

Each tour stop will include a variety of collaborations by the five players, including everyone performing together as one cohesive band with a rhythm section including Pete Griffin (Dweezil Zappa, Stanley Clarke, Edgar Winter) on bass, Nick Marinovich (Yngwie Malmsteen) on keys, and JP Bouvet on drums. Vai, Wylde, Malmsteen, Bettencourt and Abasi will perform songs from their various catalogs and join forces on some well-known songs (as well as probably a few unexpected, unearthed gems).

“The Generation Axe experience goes way beyond simply gathering five guitar greats on one stage to jam," Vai continued. "The idea was to create a seamless show with one backing band and 5 completely accomplished and astonishing guitarists that take to the stage in various configurations, performing some of their solo music and merging together as cohesive co-creators of lushly orchestrated guitar extravaganzas. Guitar jams like this can get really messy when there is no organization and my idea was to create parts for everybody to play in harmony and off each other so it’s not a mess of noise. This worked out remarkably well. There are places where everyone is playing together in wild harmony.”

generation axe tour 2023

The Generation Axe Tour makes a welcome return to the US, bringing not one, not two, but five guitar virtuosos to the same stage.

It’s been two and a half years since the Generation Axe Tour graced the stage Stateside, but it’s not surprising considering what must go into organizing schedules for five of the biggest names in the industry, who all have their own tours and bands outside of this collective. It was phenomenal to think these guys could ever come together for one show in the first place, but it’s certainly a treat to get to see them come around for a second time.

It was also a pleasure to see that the lineup has remained the same as the last tour – Tosin Abasi , Nuno Bettencourt , Zakk Wylde , Yngwie Malmsteen , and the man responsible for pulling this whole thing together in the first place, Steve Vai . Vai has certainly done an excellent job of curating the best of the best for this tour. For an impressive three and a half hours, the guitarists took turns to perform their own songs, as well as coming together to play a few tunes – often involving some fantastic five-part guitar harmonies.

The epic night began in this manner with all five performing “Hocus Pocus”. You would think that have five such heavy-hitters performing the same song together, that it would be an overload, with each trying to out-play the other while battling for the limelight. Far from it. They were each very respectful of the other, and they all brought their own unique style to the table, which is why this tour works so well.

Tosin Abasi was the first up for his solo section, as he launched into his complex rhythmic songs on his custom eight-string guitar. The fact that JP Bouvet and Pete Griffin effortlessly provide the foundation for his work also cannot go without mention. A pattern that would happen throughout the night was that you’d often see the guitarists coming out to accompany each other. The first pairing of the night came when Nuno Bettencourt accompanied Abasi, which led to a truly unique melding of styles from the duo.

This led seamlessly to Nuno’s segment, which had the Extreme fans on their feet dancing and cheering along as he ripped straight into “Get The Funk Out,” which also saw him take the role of vocalist. Bettencourt looked completely at ease on (and, at one point, off) the stage as he joked and chatted with the audience. Rather than having to choose a small selection of the songs from Extreme’s back catalog, he decided to take inspiration from something a kid had posted on YouTube, and played a medley of some of his best riffs and solos, this time cutting out the vocal parts.

20 Monroe Live was clearly packed with a lot of Black Sabbath and Black Label Society fans who took to their feet the moment Zakk Wylde came out for his portion of the night as he performed the likes of “War Pigs,” “Into The Void” and Gary Moore’s “Still Got The Blues.” Wylde is known for taking a wander through the crowd as he plays without missing a beat, even as he plays his guitar behind his head as he walks. This time he outdid himself, as he took a number of trips out through the crowd, giving everyone the chance to see him up close and personal, even those up in the balcony. Adding a new spin on his audience walks, Bettencourt and Vai both joined him in the crowd, with the three trading solos making for a truly electrifying moment.

Next up was the man responsible for bringing this whole extravaganza together in the first place, Steve Vai. He headed to the stage with his custom Ibanez Gem, the red lights embedded into the fretboard glowing brightly in the darkness. As is usual with Vai, every note was played with precision and purpose. There’s no real comparator for Vai, his style is truly unique. However, one thing that you can rely on is that everything is musical and nothing is wasted. Whether he’s hanging on a note, applying that fantastic vibrato or chocking out a hundred notes a second, it all feels necessary and it all serves the song. His guitar truly is his voice and, although it sounds like a cliché, whatever guitar he is holding in his hands looks like an extension of him on stage. Watching the sheer mastery had the audience transfixed on a set which unfortunately seemed to be over too soon.

Rounding out the solo sets, Yngwie Malmsteen was the last to take to the stage, bringing yet another truly unique style to proceedings with his genre-defining neo-classical playing. Throughout his set, he could be seen kicking picks out into the crowd, juggling and almost wrestling with his guitar, all the while never missing a beat as he tore through his incredibly complex pieces. It’s fair to say that, as noted by Steve Vai in our interview with him earlier this month, nobody sweep picks like Yngwie.

Whilst the spotlight for this show is on the guitarists, it cannot go without mention the phenomenal musicianship it takes to back up five world-class guitarists who each have their own unique and often highly complex styles. However, Pete Griffin (Zappa plays Zappa) on bass, Nick Marinovich (Yngwie Malmsteen) on keys, and JP Bouvet on drums, more than step up to the plate with their flawless performances being a critical part of the show. Being able to keep up with just one of these guitarists would be a challenge, but to be able to adapt to the varying styles of all five is a whole other matter and truly does require musicians of the absolute highest caliber.

Throughout the night, the grins on each guitarist’s face were matched by those on the faces of the fans in the audience. While certain people in the crowd were clearly there to see their own particular guitar hero the whole audience nevertheless felt fully invested in the entire show. The musicianship on this tour is truly second to none and one you really must go and see when they come to your town. It is a unique show and there’s no guarantee something of this scale will be able to make it around again anytime soon.

Check out our interview with Steve Vai here , where he discusses the Generation Axe tour, the upcoming live record and more.

About the Generation Axe Members

While many artists fit easily into a single category,  Steve Vai  remains unclassifiable.  Vai is a virtuoso guitarist, visionary composer, and consummate audio producer who sculpts musical sound with infinite creativity and technical mastery.  He is one of the most in-demand, versatile, eloquent and soulful guitarists in the business.  The GRAMMY Award-winner has sold over 15 million albums and toured the world as a solo artist, a member of G3, and with Frank Zappa, Alcatrazz, David Lee Roth, and Whitesnake.  Vai launched his successful solo career with the release of  Flex-Able  in 1984 and has written, produced, and engineered all of his solo albums.  He has appeared as a guest artist on more than 40 albums and created music for blockbuster films, best-selling video games, national sports franchises, and corporate brand initiatives. Vai has earned honorary doctorates from Berklee College of Music and Musicians Institute.  For more info, visit:   www.vai.com

GRAMMY Award-winner  Zakk Wylde ’s legendary career includes a lengthy tenure with Ozzy Osbourne in which Wylde co-wrote and recorded several albums, including the multi-platinum  No More Tears , Osbourne’s largest selling solo album featuring the classic hit single, “Mama, I’m Coming Home” and the bulk of the double platinum 2002 set,  Ozzmosis .  With Osbourne, Wylde has played on countless world tours and television appearances, with his signature bullseye Les Paul in tow.  Wylde has his mitts imprinted on Hollywood’s Rock Walk of Fame; guest-starred alongside Mark Wahlberg and Jennifer Aniston in the movie “Rockstar”; and even momentarily joined Axl, Slash and Duff in Guns N’ Roses.  But nothing offers the pure expression of Zakk Wylde’s animalistic “id” like Black Label Society, the stomping, heavy, bluesy, recklessly unhinged hard-rock-metal quartet who are quick to rip up a solo as to dip into a piano-fueled anthemic ballad.  For more info, visit:   www.zakkwylde.com

When  Yngwie J. Malmsteen  hit the scene in the early 80s, he turned the entire guitar world upside down; never before was guitar playing like his ever heard. Drawing inspiration from his love for Baroque and Romantic classical music, Malmsteen employs classical violin techniques such as four and five octave arpeggios, pedal notes, and harmonic minor, diminished and Phrygian scales, flawlessly delivered at mind-boggling levels of speed and clarity. In doing so, he has singlehandedly created a brand new style of guitar playing and composing that is still derived from today. In addition to having written and produced 35+ neoclassical rock albums, Malmsteen composed and orchestrated the “Concerto Suite for Electric Guitar and Orchestra,” which he recorded with the prestigious Czech Philharmonic in Prague, conducted by Yoel Levy of Atlanta Symphony fame. Malmsteen subsequently performed the piece live with the the New Japan Philharmonic and the Taipei Symphony, among others.  Malmsteen has received numerous Grammy nominations, hundreds of magazine covers, dozens of Reader’s Poll and Composer of the Year Awards, a plaque on the Rock Walk of Fame, signature model guitars, amps, pickups, strings, picks, pedals, microphones, and more. TIME Magazine placed him as one of the top ten guitarists of all time. Some 35 years and 25 million+ album sales later, Yngwie shows no signs of slowing down, with his brand new record  World on Fire  due for release in April 2016.  For more info, visit:   www.yngwiemalmsteen.com

Guitar virtuoso, singer-songwriter, and record producer,  Nuno Bettencourt  rose to international prominence as a guitar player with the GRAMMY-nominated, Boston-area band EXTREME, one of the most successful rock acts of the early to mid 1990s selling over 10 million records worldwide. Musically, EXTREME is dominated by Bettencourt’s blistering guitar riffs, often with funky, syncopated timing, and incendiary, high-speed rock/metal solos. Bettencourt penned the acoustic ballad “More Than Words” that went to #1 on the Billboard charts and “Hole Hearted” that reached #4. He has released multiple solo albums as well as with bands he founded including Mourning Widows Population 1, Dramagods and Satellite Party. Bettencourt has written, produced and performed with many legendary artists including Rihanna, Steven Tyler, Paul McCartney, Janet Jackson and many others.  For more info, visit:   www.nunobettencourt.com

Oluwatosin Ayoyinka Olumide Abasi, better known as  Tosin Abasi , is a Nigerian American guitarist known as the guitar player and founder of the instrumental progressive metal band, Animals as Leaders.  Abasi’s compositions of intricate music have garnered critical acclaim in a few short years. Abasi is part of the breed of new contemporary players who are raising the bar on the concept of electric guitar virtuosity.  His approach to the guitar stems from a passion for advanced techniques and harmony. Using 7-, 8-, and 9-string guitars have allowed Abasi to create a highly unique and individual sound.  For more info, visit:   www.facebook.com/animalsasleaders

Coverage of the Generation Axe Tour in Austin, TX – Review & Photos of the show here!

Words and images by Rene Botello

There are many guitarists in the world, but not many can stand out as the line up for Generation Axe.  Nuno Bettencort, Tosin Abasi, Zakk Wylde, Steve Vai, and Yngwie Malmsteen helped shape and push music beyond what we thought was possible.

Driving 3 ½ hours each way was an easy choice, it’s been 22 years since the last time I saw Steve Vai live.  That was with the original G3 tour which consisted of Joe Satriani, Steve Vai and Eric Johnson. So many moons ago, yet an unforgettable experience.

Tonight’s show was at Austin City Limits The Moody Theater.  The venue is quite nice with a balcony, giving many easy access to view the show. To top it off, tonight’s show was being recorded for an DVD!

First up was Tosin Abasi , lead guitarist and frontman of Animals As Leaders. Tosin has become one of the leaders and innovators of modern progressive shredders, leaving many with envy and jaws dropped. His playing can be calming and ferocious at his discretion and is not easily matched by his contemporaries.

Next was Nuno Bettencourt who is known for his playing in the band Extreme who back in the day had the hit single More than Words which he joked about not playing, to some people’s sadness. Luckily he did play Flight of the Wounded Bumblebee , which showcased his nimble playing.

Following the good time Nuno left the crowd with, Zakk Wylde made his presence known and gave the crowd it’s full metal dosage. What I loved about his set was that half the time he played in the audience, giving fans an up close and personal live viewing. Everyone had a chance to see him this way. As a fan, this was a surprise and memory that I’ll cherish.

Finally, Steve Vai made his entrance and exceeded expectations. Watching him play is otherworldly, he must be from another planet. I still remember watching him play For The Love Of God all this years ago, having an euphoric emotion and this time was no different. I only wish his set was longer, next time I won’t wait a couple of decades to see him live.

Following Steve was the incomparable Yngwie Malmsteen . Shredding his classical infused style over rock has made him a staple in the music industry that no one will ever forget.  For decades he was the person to best when it came to playing as many notes as possible, which to this day, many still find it impossible to do. I remember as a kid trying to learn classical music because of him.  He helped broaden my musical tastes that has stayed with me to this day.

Ending the show, was an special rendition of Bohemian Rhapsody . This showcased each musicians talent and made for a perfect night of guitar playing and memories which I will treasure forever. I know I will be purchasing the live DVD once it’s out, unless someone wants to give me a gift?

Zakk Wylde (born January 14, 1967) is a prolific musician, songwriter and multi-instrumentalist, known as the former Ozzy Osbourne guitarist and founder of the heavy metal band Black Label Society, Wylde hails from Bayonne, New Jersey, U.S.

Born Jeffrey Phillip Wielandt, the musician began studying music age eight, however didn’t become serious until around the age of 14 and in high school – where he would commonly spend 12 hours playing guitar non-stop before having to go to school again. The guitarist’s musical debut came with the local band Stone Henge, followed a little while later by Zyris. Strongly influenced by the original Ozzy Osbourne guitarist Randy Rhoads, Wylde sent a demo tape to Ozzy Osbourne in 1987 and landed to role of lead guitarist. Wylde's debut with the band came on “No Rest for the Wicked” in 1988 and he subsequently played on a number of hit albums. Although Wylde eventually left the group to pursue his own interests, he remained on good terms with Ozzy and the band and returned to play and tour with Ozzy Osbourne after his replacement didn’t work out.

In 1994, the guitarist formed his own power trio Pride & Glory, however earned little attention and disbanded after only one self-titled album. Toying with the idea of joining Guns N’ Roses, Wylde embarked on a solo career instead which resulted in his debut album “Book of Shadows” in 1996.

Two years layer Zakk Wylde formed the heavy metal group Black Label Society and alongside drummer Phil Ondich recorded the band’s debut album “Sonic Brew” in 1998. The guitarist and vocalist has subsequently released an impressive 13 albums with Black Label Society and in 2006 was recognised at the Hollywood Rock Walk of Fame for his contribution to rock & roll.

Live reviews

I was offended that Father Zakk decided to step out into the crowd and walk to near where I was standing as I could no longer see him play.

I mean, I picked that very spot up in the back in order to see him. Because last time he was in Calgary, I was up front and got hammered ... and I was so hurt, I practically had to be carried back to the car, at which point I figured I`ll never rush to the front and try to stay there again (although it didn`t actually stop at that point, but)

Then, what does he do? Decides to walk around to the back and stop two feet away from where I am standing and ... well, WAS standing ... because I moved in order to prevent myself from being caught in a mosh, you know?

So, there I am, no longer able see him because 99 per cent of everyone is at least a head taller than I am. And the only way to keep myself safe was to walk in the opposite direction. Like, keep at least ten feet distance.

And return to my spot once he cleared the area. Why? Because the entire back row wanted to be up close and personal.

Like, large crowds have high trampling little people risks, don*t you know.

I am certain that JD, the 9 time winning Lead Female Actress in all Categories will agree with me, ... I tried to get his attention, but he was too busy doing his own shit ...

But the last time I went to see Black Label Society, he laughed at me for being front and centre. (Like, haha, you`re either die hard or you`re stupid or you`re both .. no, you`re both.)

But like I said .. I was probably the only person complaining. And just about that.

Nothing else.

And why are you asking for a review anyway?

Never experienced a `nauseatingly boring time` with the Black Label Society Folk.

And if you`re about to attack me for calling JD a female, then you haven`t seen BLS in a REALLY REALLY FUCKING LONG TIME and I feel for you.

Go get yourself a ticket and get with it.

I have seen Zakk Wylde in concert before, but never as a solo artist. He has performed with Ozzy Osbourne and his band Black Label Society. I eagerly awaited attending this show. I was curious to see what a Zakk Wylde concert would be like.As I entered the arena, the place was packed.

He completely sold out the venue. The fans were a mix of young and old. I found my seat and waited for the show to begin. The lights went dim. The crowd eagerly waited. All of a sudden, the first notes of "Crazy Train" began to play. This was a surprise to everyone. Zakk then appeared from behind the stage. His hair was whipping around as he played guitar. Within a few seconds, Zakk started playing his own songs.

He smiled as if he knew he was teasing the crowd. The crowd loved it. He continued for the next two hours playing a mix of old an new songs.By the end of the show, everyone was exhausted. It was an amazing experience. I never imagined the show would be this good. Zakk Wylde really gave everything he had. I plan to see him next time he is in my area.

Saw Generation Axe last night and as always Zakk absolutely sole the whole Damn show. Everyone involved was great but I'm convinced that if Zakk Wylde lost both hand he would still put on a performance that others would envy.
