This weekend will mark one year since a collision in Lincoln killed two women and injured 20 others during an unsanctioned Memorial Day cruise night.

Police hope to prevent another tragedy by tripling enforcement efforts this weekend.

A night of watching hot rods and classic cars roll down Lincoln's main drag last Memorial Day weekend turned tragic.

A fiery collision sent two cars into a crowd of bystanders.

Emily Siebenhor, 21, and Edith Hermosillo, 22, were killed and dozens of bystanders were hurt.

Prosecutors charged 18-year-old Kyvell Stark with two counts of manslaughter and two counts of driving under the influence.

Police allege the Omaha teen was driving "close to 90 miles per hour" on a learner's permit and was under the influence of marijuana at the time of the collision.

Police vow there will be significant changes for this weekend's cruise night events.

"You will see increased law enforcement presence, both Lincoln Police and Nebraska State Patrol resources," Assistant Lincoln Police Chief Jason Stille said.

Stille said there will be 24 officers, Nebraska State Patrol Air Wing support and video monitoring along O Street.

Stille said they will be cracking down on serious law violations.

"You have the racing, you'll have the burnouts and an excessive noise," Stille said.

The city has partnered with several businesses to block off parking lots after hours trying to keep large crowds from gathering in one area.

"We are trying to engage the public and make sure that they're responsible for their actions and also look out for each other, look out for the person to the left and the right of you," Stille said.

The city has also changed the left turn signal light at some intersections to show only the green arrow and changed the traffic light pattern during the late evening hours.

"So you're not stopping at every light. And we have a lot of congestion so we are trying to keep traffic moving a little bit," Stille said.

Businesses in the area told KETV Newswatch 7 that something needed to be done.

Ben Akins, an assistant manager at Men's Warehouse, said most people are just there to enjoy the cars but there have been some problems.

"Anything that we can do to improve those types of situations and limit the impactful, although very few situations like this that occur," Akins said.

Stille said people can enjoy the classic cars but most of the responsible car owners put on the brakes after dark.

"If I owned that car I wouldn't be driving it at nine, 10, 11 at night," Stille said.

He suggested going out before sundown.

"I think you're going to see some pretty fantastic vehicles in town this weekend," Stille said.

2 killed, 20 injured when cars slam into crowd at cruise night in Nebraska, authorities say

LINCOLN, Neb. — Two people were killed and 20 others were injured after a crash that sent two cars careening into a crowd of bystanders while an annual Memorial Day weekend “cruise” night was wrapping up in Nebraska’s capital, police said Monday.

Two women, ages 20 and 22, had been inside one of the cars and died in the Sunday night crash on O Street in Lincoln. Of the injured bystanders, one person was listed in critical condition and the others were treated at hospitals for injuries not believed to be life-threatening, police said.

“We do not believe nor is there any evidence this was an intentional act,” Lincoln police said in a statement.

Lincoln Police Chief Teresa Ewins said in a news conference Monday afternoon that neither of the vehicles involved in the crash was participating in the “Americruise” event, which has been taking place in the city since the early 1990s. It was a collision that could have happened at any time, she said.

“At the time of the collision there wasn’t a lot of people out,” Ewins said. “The cars were not flowing down street as normal during this event.”

BOAT CRASH: 5 dead, 4 rescued after Memorial Day weekend boat crash in Georgia

Police said the crash happened when an 18-year-old Omaha man driving a black Ford Taurus traveling westbound on O Street struck a white Toyota Corolla that was “facing” eastbound. The women, both in the Corolla, were pronounced dead at the scene. The driver of the Taurus was taken to a hospital with non-life-threatening injuries, police said.

The impact drove both vehicles onto the sidewalk. The Taurus had rolled over onto its top, trapping two victims who were rescued by bystanders who pushed the car back on its wheels.

O Street has been a popular spot for cruisers over the Memorial Day weekend and thousands of spectators have gathered at times to watch from business parking lots. However, authorities say some drivers have attempted dangerous maneuvers to excite the crowd, such as burnouts and speeding, and law enforcement had an increased presence this year, the Lincoln Journal Star reported.

“We’ll be changing a lot of things in regards to people that are coming to Lincoln to cause havoc like that,” Ewins said, referring to the extracurricular activity as sideshows. “It’s not acceptable. And yes, things will change.”

A spectator was killed at the event in July 2000 when a non-participant car veered off O Street and hit 39-year-old Connie McCullough. She died shielding her children.

Police ID 2 women killed in Nebraska crash that injured 20

LINCOLN, Neb. (AP) — Police have identified the two women killed over the weekend when two cars crashed during an annual Memorial Day “cruise” night and injured 20 people when the cars struck a crowd of bystanders in Nebraska's capital city.

Lincoln Police said Tuesday that 20-year-old Emily Siebenhor and 22-year-old Edith Hermosillo died in the Sunday night crash on O Street in Lincoln after a Ford Taurus smashed into the Toyota Corolla they were in. Of the people who were injured, only two remained hospitalized Tuesday, with one in improving to serious condition and the other improving to fair condition.

The crash happened shortly after 10:45 p.m. Sunday while crowds of people gathered in business parking lots along Lincoln's main street to watch the classic cars participating in the “Americruise” event. Neither of the cars involved in the crash were participating in the cruising event, and officials have said it was a collision that could have happened at any time.

Police said a number of bystanders responded quickly to start providing first aid after the crash. Authorities asked anyone who witnessed the crash to come forward to help with the investigation, especially if they have videos or photos of the event.

2 dead, 19 taken to hospital after major crash in Lincoln, Nebraska

Two people were killed and 19 others taken to hospital following a major crash in Lincoln, Nebraska, police said Monday.

The Lincoln Police Department said in a tweet at around 1:30 a.m. ET Monday that officers were investigating a "fatality accident" after receiving initial reports of multiple vehicles crashing into a large crowd.

It later said two "female occupants" had been killed in the incident, with 19 others transported to hospital. Of those, police said one was in critical condition and the other 18 people were believed to be in non-life-threatening condition.

The ages and identities of the deceased were not immediately clear. Police did not immediately respond to a request for more information.

The incident appeared to unfold as an “Americruise” event was taking place. It was not immediately clear if the incident was connected to the event.

In a call with dispatchers published by Broadcastify, a first responder can be heard describing "people lying in the street" after being hit by a vehicle. The responder said several people were "down" and that at least one vehicle had flipped.

The dispatchers were also warned of "trapped occupants" in a car that had started to catch fire.

Police said the incident had unfolded near 52nd and O Street, where the Americruise event appeared to be taking place.

The Americruise event has previously been described as an annual affair that sees drivers flock to Lincoln over Memorial Day weekend to show off their cars by cruising down city streets.

Asked for comment, the Midwest Association of Car Enthusiasts, which appears to have organized past Americruise events, said it had no direct involvement in the incident. It declined to provide further comment.

2 Dead, 19 Injured in Nebraska ‘Cruise Night’ Crash

memorial day cruise lincoln ne

Two people were killed Sunday night in a nightmarish crash during a Memorial Day weekend “cruise night” on the streets near downtown Lincoln, Nebraska.

Nineteen others were injured when two cars buzzed into a crowd gathered to watch the informal annual event.

Two women, ages 20 and 22, were killed, Lincoln Police Capt Max Hubka told the Lincoln Journal Star. They were occupants of one of the cars involved in the crash.

As of 2 a.m., Hubka said that one of the injured was in critical condition.

A witness told the Journal Star that a speeding car rammed another that was trying to turn at an intersection. Both vehicles jumped the curb and crashed into a crowd gathered to watch the parade of classic cars interspersed with normal traffic, with many of the drivers attempting dangerous maneuvers such as speeding and burnouts to rev up the crowd.

Hubka said that Sunday night’s gather was “pretty controlled,” with fewer people participating and fewer people watching than on previous cruise nights.

Both Nebraska State Police and Lincoln Police said they would beef up their forces in the area for this year’s events. Hubka said no police officers witnesses the crash, but they were on scene in less than a minute.

The names of the victims were not released.
