He made the trip even better than it already was great little villages, talking to the kid on the side of the road talking to people working in the Rosefield. We had a fantastic cycling trip. This was my third cycling trip through Indochina and by far the most challenging riding.

Tom was wonderful, very accommodating to our needs. Cycling part could be better thought out, definitely spend too much time on the bus and on busy roads but overall it was a good experience and an interesting way to see the country.

Mountain Biking Annapurna Circuit - 14 Days

Our communication with Rana at Adventure Himalayan Travels & treks was good, the reply was always quick and he replied to all our questions and inquiries. We also met shortly our first night in Kathmandu for greetings and introduction to our guide Harka. Harka is a great guy with lots of humour and an excellent guide. He made sure that we had everything we needed on the trek at all times. Whether it was keeping track on bookings, go in advance to order lunch or helping out with the bikes so they always was in good condition. You name it and Harka fix. We felt real lucky with such an experienced and pro guide. Absolutely worth a little xtra pay. The route and scenery was awesome both up and down, and on the way down from Thurong pass towards Pokhara we went trough some awesome downhill and real fun singel trails. The ride in general was at times quite hard and bumpy and also quite technical, so a little experience in advance is nice, but not a necessity you just need to go real slow at times. All in all great experience, totally recommend and much more fun to bike than hike.

Cycling holiday: Angkor Wat - Saigon 10days Tour

Cycling holiday: Angkor Wat - Saigon 10days

There were two parts of the tour – Cambodia and Vietnam. Cambodia five stars hands down, Vietnam three stars, at a push. And the main difference was in the guides. Cambodia was simply brilliant, better than I could ever imagine. Sin, our guide, was simply the best and the whole tour was really well organised. We were informed of what the day is going to be like, breaks were timed perfectly, Sin and the driver always prepared various refreshments for us, every day different speciality so we got to taste Cambodian food. Sin brought us to a local market, introduced us to different fruit, Cambodian traditional desserts, I would’ve never tasted this without a local guide that wanted to show us the best from Cambodia. I was leaving Cambodia with a smile on my face and a bit of sadness of saying goodbye to Sin. We crossed the border to Vietnam and that was when it all went downhill. After a very lengthy process crossing the Cambodian/Vietnamese border we met our new guide, Mr. Trung. The first impression wasn’t the best and, unfortunately, set the tone for the rest of the tour. We had asked, numerous times, to get local experience instead of having meals in touristy restaurants, yet, Mr. Trung booked a hotel for our dinner in Chau Doc, even though there was one restaurant right next door and another across the road. Hoping for the next day to be better, unfortunately, it got worse. Starting at 7.30am and arriving in our new hotel at 7pm, with barely any breaks. No fruit, drinks, refreshments, unless you want to call a banana and a handful of peanuts that. We eventually had to ask for lunch, Mr. Trung found some random home place where they made beautiful food for us, which was a great experience. Off for more cycling, no communication from the guide, no showing us what’s around, where are we cycling, we had to ask for another break, as the weather was scorching and we were running out of water. After finishing the cycle for the day we boarded the van and drove for 3 hours to Can Tho, sourced our own dinner and barely spent 12 hrs in the place before setting off again. Can Tho looked like a place worth exploring, unfortunately we didn’t get to see any of that. Another day, another cycling in a loop and boarding the van to get to our next destination. The Vietnamese part was disappointing, as I assumed we would cycle to get closer to our next stop, not cycle practically in a circle and then drive. Fruit, snacks, drinks were non-existent, until the last day of the tour. The food was amazing though and choice of places to eat couldn’t have been better. However, Mr. Trung didn’t seem to be interested in the tour, interested in us as a group, was distant and never bothered to learn our names. To him, I was a ‘miss’, ‘lady’ or ‘excuse me’. He barely took any photos, didn’t engage in conversations much and his English was poor. Complete opposite to Sin. Overall, I am delighted I chose a cycling tour as it helped me to get to know the countries much better than just driving around sitting on a bus. Cycling through villages, people waving at us, kids giggling, cows getting in the way, monkeys walking around, catching sunset in Phnom Penh, this all made my holiday unforgettable.

Mr Chi was an excellent guide who made this tour a wonderful experience. His knowledge of Vietnam and his focus on detail made sure that a complex tour itinerary worked like clockwork. His support team also carried out their roles in a professional and very friendly manner. Their customer focus was exemplary. I believe that Mr Chi and his team deserve a lot of credit for making this tour such an enjoyable experience.

14-Day Cycle & Hike Panda Kingdom and Kham Tibet, Sichuan Province, China Tour

14-Day Cycle & Hike Panda Kingdom and Kham Tibet, Sichuan Province, China

This was a fantastic trip- highly recommended. Timing meant that I was the only traveller, and the whole journey was handled with professionalism and immense responsiveness. The tour was definitely a challenge in parts, but safety was at the heart of planning, and the guides were happy to let me decide what was possible outside things like thunderstorms and extreme heat. Rush, the primary guide, was very knowledgeable about the locations and sites- and he can talk for hours about them! He also ensured that food was abundant- seriously, so much excellent food- and will let you be as experimental as you like with the local dishes. We got on very well throughout the two weeks. Really, the only problem is that I have already finished the tour now, and cannot do the whole thing again with new eyes. Some of my colleagues have already signed up for a shortened version, and the company is tailoring the new trip to their requests. A great tour, a great company, a great set of guides, and absolutely mind-blowing countryside.

I did an individual tour with Thai in the Mekong Delta. It was perfect for what I wanted, biking on narrow lanes, seeing the countryside where tourists don't go and even talking to the people. Highlights were being pulled into a wedding party and visiting his uncle's house.

Northern Vietnam Cycling Tour: Mai Chau to Pu Luong

My family and I have had the pleasure of doing several tours with Mr. Biker Saigon. Thai and his crew are THE BEST -- they are experienced, organized, responsive, and extremely knowledgeable about the routes and local communities. One of our trips involved a group of 14 riders with different abilities. Each day during the four-day tour, Thai and his team provided us with several options to make sure everyone felt comfortable and also challenged. We lived in Vietnam for three years and these bike tours with Mr. Biker Saigon were the highlights of our stay in this beautiful country.

Reviews of asia bike tours.

Bicycle tour with intrepid was wonderful
Our tour with Intrepid was amazing! No details were spared. We were very well taken care of. Our tour guide Seen; with us the entire time, was conscientious, super attentive to our needs, fun, friendly and always available to provide us with ideas, guidance and support. The guides in each country of our journey, especially Lam from Vietnam and So Koom from Cambodia, were very knowledgeable of the history and their cultures. We learned so much from them. The cycling was the best! Bikes were fantastic to ride and all the mechanics took such good care to prepare our bikes each day. There were always plenty of snacks and water along the route with adequate stopping/rest points. Loved it and would highly recommend.
Do it! Without any hesitation! First of all, the trip was amazing and I wouldn’t have missed it for the world! Cycle guides and drivers were excellent, speaking good English and ensuring that I had a close-up view of somewhere so different from home. The landscapes, culture, people and experiences along the way were unforgettable and I would certainly embark on a similar adventure if the opportunity came along. I would also travel with Bravo again. As you’ll see below, there were a few wrinkles in their handling of the trip but they were anxious to make amends and I would hope that they take my comments on board and use them to improve the experience for future customers. My tour was probably rather unusual as I was the only person who signed up for the selected dates. I was expecting to be part of a small group and I’m really grateful that Bravo went ahead with the tour, rather than cancelling. It was a tremendous experience! That being said, I've given less than a perfect five-star rating as there were a number of minor mishaps and uncertainties which could so easily have been avoided and would have made a huge difference to me. It’s quite possible that some of these were related to my solo status and may not have happened with a larger group, but on the whole I would recommend that Bravo pay a little more attention to the customer experience, being more proactive and publishing a more detailed itinerary in advance, particularly for transport and hotel arrangements. Once I discovered that they generally responded quickly to questions via WhatsApp, that became my standard means of communication and most arrangements went smoothly, though occasionally I had to nag a little before receiving answers. Hotel bookings at either end of my travel and en route seemed to be one of the biggest problems, with a few hiccups in reservations. For example, I had pre-booked two extra nights in the Ho Chi Minh City hotel at the end of my trip in addition to the two nights included in the tour. Apparently Bravo did’t finalize the reservation for the included nights with the hotel until moments before my arrival, meaning that I had to change rooms after the first night. I then found that they hadn’t booked my additional nights at all, leading to another room change when the error was discovered. That seemed messy and unnecessary, but it wasn’t so painful as to spoil the trip.

2024 ADVENTURES

Time for travel book your 2024 adventure – limited places remaining, don’t just take our word for it…, our cycling and walking tour of vietnam was amazing. we saw so much and had so many experiences in the time we had that it is hard to believe it all. the guides thang, bao and trung were so well organised that it all went like clockwork with the great drivers who were always there to pick us up right on time.from the floating markets to the great restaurants to the home visits, cooking class, coffee making experience, kayaking, boat ride at tam coc- it was all fantastic.the guides were very knowledgeable about the various parts of the country that we visited but they were also generous in sharing thir own and their families experiences of life in vietnam over past generations. they are also very passionate about their love of their country.the accommodation and food was great. we loved experiencing the delicious vietnamese food.the itinerary worked well and was flexed in some cases to better fit the circmstances. the managing of 2 parallel groups (cyclists and walkers) was done well where we joined up at various points to do joint activities., thang and trung were excellent guides. from the moment we initially met the lads to the last day of the tour, they were always there. they were so helpful, it was wonderful to know everything was taken care of. we learnt a lot of local knowledge from them.we would have no hesitation recommending others to join the vietnam essentials tour. thank you, trip was fantastic from start to finish. great team - friendly, knowledgeable and accommodating. fabulous way to get to see and know a country. would do it again in a heartbeat thanks grasshopper, the grasshopper shikoku tour is a trip of a lifetime. cycling through local villages and beautiful landscapes with a fun group and thoughtful guides created the perfect combination of culture and activity. being relatively new to cycling, i found some of the mountain climbs to be especially rewarding and memorable. i was impressed with the routes grasshopper designed, taking lesser traveled roads and always making a point to experience local japanese food and culture. the hotels along the way were excellent, with hot springs to help relax after an adventurous day. highly recommend anyone, no matter your fitness level, or whether you're solo or in a group, to join this tour if you can, you won't regret it., we had a fantastic five days with grasshopper in northern laos. we hiked and biked in the most stunning scenery. we stayed in outstanding hotels. we spent a day on a boat going down the mekong. it was an amazing experience and our guide looked after us beautifully., having never been on a grasshopper tour before i was unsure what to expect. the experience far exceeded my expectation with a nice mix of cycling and culture. exploring small quiet roads was a delight which typically included stunning views. all your needs were taken care of as a van follows you around with your gear, plenty of food and drink as well as the usual cycling tools. we also go to visit temples, experience paper making and even made soba noodles. the accommodation was a mix of traditional japanese as well as more international-style hotels all of which were very clean and pleasant to sleep in. the food was japanese and delicious although the breakfasts became a little monotonous. it would have been nice to have cereal and a good cup of coffee or two occasionally. our guides were fantastic and lots of fun. nothing was too much trouble for them and they were constantly making sure the bikes were clean and ready for use. i brought my own bike and they even cleaned this for me - how good is that i would highly recommend this tour and would happily sign up for another grasshopper trip in the future., shikoku waratah’s tour september/october 2022 a great tour organised once again through adam - my sixth with adamshikoku is a wonderful place to cycle - spectacular scenery, mainly quiet “car free” roads. however there were some long hills- the great scenery. and the food was fantastic. the local team - led by norman (an american who lives in japan - fluent japanese), reiko his wife and the expert mechanic and dale were the best team i’ve had anywhere. nothing was too much trouble everything just “happened” we had a great group of riders - all of us only knowing an half or less of the other riders; but the group just « clicked »., this was my third time with grasshopper and i cannot recommend them enough - every member of the team - from those helping with bookings to the exceptionally knowledgeable and passionate guides, to partners (accommodation, restaurants) is amazing. if you want a memory that's personalised and special, grasshopper adventures is the right team to deliver it., wow, what an amazing experience sri lanka is a special place and experiencing it from a bicycle was just awesome., booking a trip with grasshopper means you can be sure you're going to get passionate knowledgeable guides, great food, caring attention, comfortable accommodation and a trip that will provide wonderful memories you will share over and over again. you'll also meet friendly, interesting people, some of whom will become friends for life., see more reviews >>  , come and experience, grasshopper style.

Japan ’s silent bamboo forests, a highland tea plantation in Sri Lanka , sleepy Vietnamese fishing villages and crumbling hill forts on the road to Pushkar – it’s fair to say Asian cycling tours are a long way from your typical Spin class. The beauty of these cycling trips is that they get you (literally) off the beaten path, away from the major tourist traps, and onto the road less travelled. There’s village homestays, sizzling street food crawls, historic temples and postcard-worthy beaches, with some jaw-dropping rides in between. Our Asian cycling guides are all lycra-clad locals – so you know you’re getting an expert cyclist, plus the lowdown on the best Pad Thai in Bangkok or Kyoto’s coolest karaoke bar. Classic Intrepid…on two wheels. That’s an Asia cycling tour.

Cycle through the bamboo forests in Kyoto

Kyoto, Japan

A cyclist could spend a happy couple of weeks in Kyoto, waking up to steaming bowls of miso soup and riding the days away in the bamboo forests of Arashiyama or the tree-lined tracks alongside the Katsura River. Nights could be spent whisky bar-hopping in Gion or trying to spot geishas in labyrinth alleys of Ponto-chō. On our Japan cycling tour, we’ll set you up in a traditional ryokan (tatami matts and everything) and lead you out on some simply stunning day rides up to the temples of Tenryuji and Ryoanji. After we’ve explored Kyoto from edge to edge, we’ll set off on a ride to the ancient capital of Nara, stopping for a little matcha tea by the iconic Nagarebashi Bridge.

A family of tigers in Ranthambore national park in India

Ranthambore National Park, India

Of course, there are the classic India highlights (insert the Taj or New Delhi’s iconic Red Fort here), but for something a bit different, we like to ride from the Brahmin town of Bundi to Ranthambore National Park, the old hunting ground of the Maharajas of Jaipur. Here, we’ll put the bikes aside for a while and go searching for leopards, hyenas, nilgai and Bengal tigers on a 4WD jeep safari. Deep in the jungle, we’ll pay a visit to the old Ranthambore Fort, an overgrown ruin that looks like something straight out of The Jungle Book. Our cycling tours are obviously pretty focussed on the ride, little out-of-the-way stops are great for mixing things up (and giving the legs a rest).

Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka

Anuradhapura, Sri Lanka

A UNESCO Heritage Site, the ancient capital of the Kingdom of Rajarata, and one of the oldest continuously inhabited cities on earth…but how often do you hear about Anuradhapura? It doesn’t pop up in a lot of travel mags, but it’s one of our favourite spots in all of Sri Lanka. And the best way to see it? A guided cycling tour. You’ll spend the day riding beneath enormous dagobas (particularly the white dome of Ruwanweli Saya) and crumbling brick towers reaching for the sky. The ruins are spread over a pretty big area, which is where the bikes come in handy. We’ll cycle around the temples, visit the local museum and stop for a local lunch – maybe some paper-thin Godamba rotis or crispy hoppers topped with curry.

Cycle tour in Nha Trang, Vietnam

Nha Trang, Vietnam

Well, more specifically, the coastal highway from Quy Nhon to Nha Trang. It’s one of the most breathtaking rides we’ve found anywhere in the world: a winding road that hugs to sheer granite cliffs as they plunge into the deep blue of the South China Sea. For about 90km, you can look out over distant islands and lagoons, as well as the sand dunes far below. You’ll know you’ve reached Nha Trang when you’re fighting for road space with the scooter drivers on the waterfront promenade and smelling wafting deliciousness like grilled Nem Nuong (fermented pork mince) or hot Bun Cha Ca (a sweet seafood broth with vermicelli noodles). Nha Trang is known as the ‘Cannes of the Orient’, and it makes one heck of an entrance.

A boat off of the coast of a white sand beach in Thailand

Khao Lak, Thailand

Did you hear that? It was the sound of all your muscles relaxing. After a cruisy ride down palm-fringed roads and past smiling locals, you'll make your way down the Andaman Coast to Khao Lak, the beach town of your dreams. Chill out and unwind on the appropriately named White Sand Beach while letting the crystal clear water soothe your sore quads and a fresh coconut quench your thirst. Still feel like you need a little activity? There are loads of beachside routes to cycle in the area.

The best time to cycle in Asia

Cycle Asia with Intrepid Travel

Asking the best time to cycle in Asia is a little like the old 'How long is a piece of string' conundrum: it really depends where you want to go. For Vietnam or Thailand, you really want to get in before the monsoon hits, but also after the summer tourist swarms have departed – April and May are a good bet, the weather and the riding should both be quite pleasant. If you're cycling in Japan, the winter months (December to February) are usually out, but springtime cherry blossoms in April or May will make a stunning backdrop. The southern coast of Sri Lanka can be quite pleasant over December and January, but March is a lovely shoulder month if you're looking to dodge the summer crowds. For more info on Asia's climate (and a few hints on dodging the monsoon) check out our handy guide .

Colourful Cycling Holidays in Asia

Relaxed guided bicycle tours throughout south east asia, china & mongolia.

Painted Roads specialises in relaxed, fun, small group guided bicycle tours in a variety of destinations in South-East Asia, China, and Mongolia. As well as sharing with you our love of Thailand, Vietnam and Laos we also have an in-depth knowledge of some less-well known cycling holiday destinations so we hope you will also join us on one of our unforgettable cycle tours of Yunnan, Guizhou and Guanxi in China, Taiwan, Sri-Lanka, or the wonderful open spaces of Mongolia.

All of our cycling holidays feature western tour leaders and local guides. Our philosophy is based around offering an intimate exploration by bicycle of personally crafted tours through stunning rural locales in destinations around Asia.  Our  tours include comfortable accommodation, delicious local cuisine, a support vehicle and minimal transfers. We want your biking holiday with us to be a truly memorable experience for all the right reasons so we place as much emphasis on post-cycling relaxation, convivial company, and an apres-ride beer in a warm Asian sunset as the biking itself.

A superb tour through a fascinating region, brilliantly led by David and Phong. Both clearly love what they do and this translates into an exceptional level of service. The tour itself is full of surprises, diverse ethnic villages, the awesome rocky plateau and the beauty of the rice terraces. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and would recommend it to anyone who thinks they have “done” South East Asia. Chris on Northeast Vietnam

Why Painted Roads

How our cycling holidays are different

Vietnam - Ho Chi Minh Trail

Featured Bicycle Tour: Vietnam - Ho Chi Minh Trail

Extending south of Hanoi is the Annamite Mountain Range, known in Vietnamese as Truong Son. During the Vietnam War, a series of supply routes through the dense jungle of these mountains were used to move troops and supplies to support the North Vietnamese Army and the Viet Cong in their war against South Vietnam and the United States. This series of trails ran not only through Vietnam, but also through neighbouring Laos, and soon became known as the Ho Chi Minh Trail.

Some thirty years after the war came to an end a series of roads following the route of these trails were finally linked together and sealed and, rather appropriately dubbed, The Ho Chi Minh Trail.

Named after the leader who led the nation to liberty from colonial rule, this relatively new and oft times amazingly deserted route provides a wonderful conduit for the adventurous cyclist to explore a beautiful and regularly deserted region of Vietnam seldom visited by Western travellers. A highly recommended tour if you're keen to enjoy a cycling holiday off the beaten track.

Note that this tour includes an optional extension to include a visit to the UNESCO World Heritage site of Halong Bay. See below for details.

Feedback on our Asian Cycle Touring Holidays

Some things our clients have said...

Having just returned from the Mekong Delta my second Painted Roads bike tour, the first being southern Thailand the main question I have been asked is " Which was better" my answer " The one your on is the best tour". How can one better great company, pedalling a bike through beautiful country side, good hotels and excellent food, of course the odd beer or three. In my opinion David Walker is to bike tours is what Willy Wonka is to chocolate, it doesn't matter what package one chooses or what it says on the ingredients one can rely on a fantastic product and wanting to come back for more. Mr David Willy Wonka Walker and your team of Oompa-Loompas just carry on doing just what your doing. Terry Mathers on Vietnam - Mekong Delta Region
The first almost 100% off-road route provided by Painted Roads is attractive to clients not fond of tarmac The food was surprisingly good as Mongolia, being a country with specific climate, cannot provide a broad variety of local produce. This lack was amply compensated by the fantasy of the cook and his crew. The mix of a good hotel at the start and end of the tour, with camping in comfortable tents and gers in between makes the tour very attractive. Marko Žumer - Slovenia on Mongolia Khangai Mountains
A fascinating trip through a rapidly changing part of China that gives the visitor more of a view of the "new" country that's emerging than more remote tours, whilst still providing dramatic scenery, great food, challenging but manageable riding, with an opportunity to test yourself against the Pros on the last day, and the usual Painted Roads exemplary levels of service and company from David, Echo and the local team Phil Hurcom - London. on China - South

By the way, we're selecting these at random, if you'd like to see more you can refresh this page or go and have a look at our " Testimonials page .

Day 1: Arrival Haikou Airport/ Transfer to Wenchang

Our meeting point is in Haikou Meilan Airport. We will arrange a private bus to drive everyone to our start point hotel in Wenchang (approximately 1 hour) at a designated time. We'll advise you of the ideal flights to arrive in Haikou for the transfer but there's also an option of staying in Haikou for the night previous if you want to explore the city or other flights are preferred. High speed trains run between Haikou and the airport (and also Wenchang).  After checking in, time permitting, you'll have some time to have a walk on the beach, explore Wenchang old town, or swim in the hotel pool before our group meeting at 6 pm followed by a local feast including Wenchang chicken, world famously known as Hainan chicken.

Stay: Wenchang

Wenchang is on the northeast coast of Hainan Island. It is a "small" city with only 600,000 population but is the cultural heartland of the province with many historical sites. The local dialect in Hainan is based on the Wenchang dialect and the area is also well known as the ancestral home for millions of overseas Chinese across South East Asia and beyond. The area also boasts the islands largest coconut planation of more than 500,000 trees along the coastal region to its south.

Day 2: Cycle to Bo'ao - 76KM

After breakfast in the hotel, we'll set up the bikes and begin by cycling through coconut forest on shady countryside roads to reach Shibahang village, awarded with the title of “Famous Village of Chinese History and Culture". Shibahang is named after the eighteen orderly lines of Duojin courtyard houses that make up the village. After visiting those old buildings, we'll ride to the junction of Wenchang and Qionghai to have an authentic Hainanese lunch by the sea. In the afternoon, we’ll ride along sea view and countryside roads to the fishing port of Tanmen, where we visit Nanyang Museum before reaching todays destination, Bo’ao town.

bike tour asia

Bo’ao city is the permanent venue of the Bo’ao Forum for Asia, a forum for top-level businessmen, academics, and government representatives from Asian countries. The city is also popular with beach lovers, photographers, naturalists and marine sports enthusiasts. The city is surrounded by coconut forests, mountains facing the sea, sandy beaches, warm ocean and plenty of sunshine.

Day 3: Day 3 - Cycle to Xinglong - 110KM

Our second cycling day is a big century ride - 110 km, but on flat roads all the way! After breakfast, our ride starts from the hotel and meanders along the Wanquan River, or the River of Ten Thousand Springs, to Liuke village. Here we'll take a quick visit to the Cai Family Courtyard, "the first home of overseas Chinese in Hainan", a large historic mansion built in 1934 with the proceeds of a rubber plantation fortune made by several migrant Chinese brothers. After a short visit, we keep cycling to Heyue, a small town, for lunch. In the afternoon, we'll ride a long section of Hainan's most stunning coastal road, which is also a section of the annual "around-the-island" cycling race. After heading inland, our destination is Xinglong, set in lush tropical countryside, and famous for its Tropical Botanic Garden and hot springs. We will stay in the hot spring hotel and enjoy a Hainan special sea food pot for dinner. After dinner, you can swim or soak in the hot spring to wash the fatigue of the days ride away.

Xinglong is the centre of coffee culture in Hainan. Far from being an expensive luxury as you'll see in China's bigger cities, in Xinglong you'll find locals sipping coffee at market stalls for a fraction of the price of a Starbucks. Brought to the Xinglong in the 50s as a state run crop, the habit of consuming coffee daily has become the norm in many places in the region. Whilst coffee production in Hainan is dwarfed by Yunnan's output, it's adoption here is unique in a land where tea is king!

Day 4: Cycle to Qiongzhong -75KM

Today we cycle into the tropical rainforest valleys of central Hainan on the first of two days with some decent climbs. In the morning, we will pass through Chenxiang Bay Reservoir and Feishuiling Waterfall along a rural forest road. We'll be heading up in elevation with a climb (and downhill!) in the morning and also one in the afternoon. If the hills aren't your thing there'll be a seat for you and your bike in our support vehicle and trailer. At noon, we'll enjoy authentic farmhouse dishes at a rural food stall. After lunch, we continue to ride along quiet and lush country roads to Qiongzhong Li and Miao Autonomous County which lies close to the Baihualing Nature Reserve.

The Li, or the Hlai, are one of China's 56 ethnic minorities with a population of around 1.3 million people. They are the oldest inhabitants of Hainan Island with a history stretching back more than 3000 years. They inhabit the central and south regions of the island. Whilst they have been largely assimilated into the broader social fabric of Hainan, there are still some villages remaining where people live traditional lifestyles. A striking cultural practice was for the women to tattoo their arms and the backs of their hands although this is increasingly rare today.

The Miao are one of China's largest ethnic groups with a population of over 9 million people. However, Hainan Island is home to a small fraction of their population. Most Miao live in Guizhou, Hunan and Yunnan and language-wise the Miao in Hainan speak a dialect that is closer to Yao or Zhuang minorities. The Miao are hill people and traditionally wear colourful embroidered clothing with silver jewellery.

Day 5: Cycle to Wuzhishan - 85KM

Today, we will continue to ride through undulating forest mountain roads with our final destination near the base of Wuzhishan, or Five Finger Mountain, the highest altitude location in Hainan. In the morning, we ride 33 kilometres with a climb to kick start the day and a cruisy downhill into to Shiyun Town where we settle in for a rainforest farmhouse lunch. In the afternoon, after a short downhill we will meet the days big challenge - a ride up and out of the rainforest valley to the core scenic area of Wuzhishan. Tonight, we stay in the rainforest in a scenic hotel surrounded by stunning mountains.

bike tour asia

Wuzhi mountain is the highest mountain in Hainan island, It is located in the middle of Hainan island, named after the undulating peaks and ridges that resemble five fingers. It is listed as A-level tourist spot by the international tourism organisation. The highest peak of Wuzhi mountain is Erzhi, with an altitude of 1876 meters. Wuzhi mountain is also a symbol of Hainan Island.

Day 6: Cycle to Baoting - 71KM

After breakfast, our riding will take a turn to head downhill with some great sweeping descents lined up for the day. The total cycling distance is 71KM with only 5KM of upward trending riding with the rest downhill or flat. Lush tropical rainforest, with glimpses across the flat land that meets the sea, is the backdrop for the days ride. In the afternoon, as the altitude gradually decreases, we'll reach our destination in Baoting Li and Miao Autonomous County, with plenty of time to soak in the hotel hot springs with views of Qixian Ridge looming in the distance.

bike tour asia

Baoting is also a Li & Miao Ethnic Group Autonomous County  保亭黎族苗族治县 . From the hotel we stay for the night, you will have a great view of the Qixianling National Rain Forest Park.

Day 7: Cycle to Haitang Bay/ transfer to Sanya – 50km

Today is our last day of our cycling journey. Staying on country roads, we gradually descend to Haitang Bay on the coast, arriving around noon, to end this wonderful cycling journey. We'll grab some lunch while the bikes are loaded up, before transferring to our Sanya hotel. In the afternoon you'll have some time to hit the beach for a swim, or do some shopping, before we meet for our final meal together and some celebratory drinks by the ocean.

bike tour asia

Our hotel in Sanya is located in Dadonghai, a large bay with clean water and a beautiful white sand beach. Lined with a boardwalk and shaded by coconut palms, there are dozens of restaurants and bars along the beach from which to while away the day. Scooters can be hired to explore the area further: there's more beaches and bays to explore as well as visits to Sanya city and local markets.

Day 8: Departure Day

Today is departure day and you are free to leave at anytime. We’ll organise a transfer to Sanya airport connect with the group departure flight. If you wish to stay longer to soak up Sanya beautiful beaches and activities, we will help with transferring to your next stop.

With China's winters generally not so conducive to cycling, why not fly south with the birds and explore tropical Hainan Island by bike? We've designed a cycling tour to make the most of the winter season; a great opportunity to keep up the exercise and get in some sun and fun whilst experiencing local Hainanese food and culture. It's sure to be popular so get in quick!

Hainan is China's only tropical island province and is an exceedingly popular seaside resort destination for tourists from all over China and beyond. With year-round fine weather, blue skies and seas, prodigious tropical rainforests and wonderful local produce, its laid back vibe often sees it referred to as a bright pearl in the South China Sea or the Hawaii of the Orient. Despite it's popularity, and beyond the resorts and tourist attractions, it is still possible to find tranquil beach-side scenery, lush rainforest, quiet backroads and traditional village life populated by ethnic minorities such as the Li and Miao.

This tour is designed to be accessible to those with a reasonable level of cycling fitness and an interest in exploring beyond the usual tourist offerings. Our ride starts from Wenchang, on the east coast, and finishes in Sanya, which has an airport servicing most destinations on the mainland and internationally. Most of the riding is on flat, quiet country roads with two days of hilly sections taking us up to (and down from) Wuzhishan, Five Finger Mountain, the highest mountain on Hainan island.

Getting There & Away

This trip starts at Haikou Airport (Airport Code HAK), the capital of Hainan Province. It is an international airport with flights from all major Chinese destinations as well as internationally.  After meeting at Haikou Meilan Airport, we will arrange a private bus to drive everyone to our start point hotel in Wenchang (approximately 1 hour) at a designated time. We'll advise you of the ideal flights to arrive in Haikou for the transfer but there's also an option of staying in Haikou for the night previous if you want to explore the city or other flights are preferred, or you can head to our start point hotel in Wenchang early if you wish to book extra nights there. High speed trains run between Haikou and the airport (and also Wenchang).

The trip finishes in the town of Sanya. Sanya (SYX) has an international airport with connecting flights to most destinations throughout China and international cities including Hong Kong, Seoul, Osaka, Singapore and Bangkok. You will organise trabsfers to your outbound flights.
