Stamford, Connecticut is less than an hour away from New York City, making it an easy Amtrak day trip. There are a variety of things to do, including visiting The Beer Garden at Shippen Landing, the Stamford Museum and Nature Center (which has hiking trails, a mansion and farmhouse), Cove Island Park and the Bartlett Arboretum & Gardens . If you like art, be sure to also check out the city’s many street murals .

Poughkeepsie

Travel 1.5 hours along the Hudson River to Poughkeepsie for beautiful water scenery. After you arrive, enjoy more river views on the Walkaway Over the Hudson (pictured above). There’s also a main street with a variety of restaurants, so you can grab a bite to eat before getting back on the train. Restaurants closest to the Amtrak station include Mahoney’s Irish Pub and River Station .

Philadelphia

Visit museums , see historical sights and eat a cheesesteak on an Amtrak day trip to Philadelphia . Travel time is about 1.5 hours from New York City, and you’ll arrive at the 30th Street Station . You can rent a bike outside the building, or use rideshare to reach the Liberty Bell , Independence Hall , Reading Terminal Market and the Philadelphia Museum of Art . There are also many great sightseeing tours to choose from, or take a bike ride along the Schuylkill River to view the natural scenery.

Home to Yale University, New Haven is about 1 hour and 45 minutes away from New York City on Amtrak. There are many wonderful museums and art galleries to visit on campus, or check out one of the many university events open to the public . If you’re more of a nature person, don’t miss the views and hiking at East Rock Park , which overlooks the city and Long Island Sound. New Haven also has many festivals that you can plan a trip around. Be sure to try the local “ apizza ” on your trip.

A two-hour train ride from New York City, Hudson, New York is on the river of the same name. There are many unique shops, cafes and restaurants in walking distance of the Amtrak station, including Wm. Farmer and Sons (farm to table), Ca’Mea (Italian), Red Dot (American) and Le Perche (French). Other things to do include enjoying the river views from the Henry Hudson Riverfront Park and taking the local ferry across the river. Note that it can be difficult to find rideshare cars, so plan on walking to see the sights.

Wilmington, Delaware is a peaceful getaway with art, gardens and mansions to explore. Amtrak travel time is about two hours, and you’ll arrive next to the Wilmington Riverwalk . Take a stroll along the waterfront or use rideshare to reach the beautiful Nemours Estate (pictured above), the Delaware Art Museum and the Winterthur Museum and Garden . You can also visit the Hagley Museum , the site where the Du Pont family started their gunpowder business.

For a fun waterfront scene complete with historic ships, plan a day trip to Baltimore . After 2.5 hours on the train, request a Lyft or Uber to reach the Inner Harbor or attraction of your choice, including the National Aquarium , Fort McHenry and the B&O Railroad Museum . There are also several different boat tours for experiencing the city from the water. When you’re ready to eat, check out the great seafood restaurants for local crab and other dishes.

New York’s capital, Albany is full of history, craft beverages and urban parks. Top attractions include the1899 New York State Capitol building, New York State Museum , Albany Institute of History and Art and USS Slater . In warmer months, you can also cruise on the Hudson River , walk around the beautiful Washington Park and explore the Corning Preserve (pictured above). Plan to get an Uber or Lyft car to reach downtown Albany after arriving at the Amtrak station — travel time from New York City is about 2.5 hours.

For a historic getaway, travel to New London . This Connecticut port town was first settled in 1646, was the base of American naval operations during the Revolutionary War, and officially became a city in 1784. There are 13 historic districts on the National Register of Historic Places to explore, or head to Ocean Beach Park for sandy beaches, a swimming pool, amusement rides, arcade and more. Consider planning your trip around Sailfest , a fun summer event, and taking a ride on the Cross Sound Ferry to view lighthouses and coastal mansions.

Mystic, Connecticut is a charming seaport city that’s 2 hours and 45 minutes away from Manhattan via train. The Mystic Seaport Museum and the last surviving wooden whaling ship are top attractions, and the recreated 18th Century village is a fun place to visit. Check out the festivals and events that take place in Mystic throughout the year for more things to see and do. Note that you’ll need to use Lyft or Uber to get around after you arrive.

An adventure for kids and adults, Lancaster, Pennsylvania  is almost three hours away from New York City on Amtrak. You can have a fun-filled day at  Dutch Wonderland amusement park or explore historical sites including President James Buchanan’s home , Amish Village and the Amish Farm and House . The historic Central Market is also a fantastic place to buy local food (consider bringing a cooler or cooler bag with you on the train). To get around, rideshare is your best option.

A popular summer getaway, Westerly, Rhode Island is near Atlantic Ocean beaches and one of the top-rated hotels in America . After a three-hour train ride, you’ll arrive in walkable downtown Westerly where there are restaurants, trendy bars, shops and historic buildings. Request a Lyft or Uber car to reach the coast and the charming Watch Hill village, Napatree Point Conservation Area and Atlantic Beach Park , which has a historic carousel and arcade.

Explore Rhode Island’s capital with a trip to Providence . Learn about the city on a narrated boat tour , enjoy the scenery at Water Place Park , eat amazing Italian food in the Federal Hill neighborhood, or head to Roger Williams Park for a zoo, botanical garden, boat rentals and walking trails. Washington D.C.

About 3.5 hours away from New York City on Amtrak, Washington D.C. is full of museums , monuments and great restaurants . The hop-on-hop-off trolley tour is an easy way to visit major attractions or get on the red subway line at Union Station to visit the sights (use Google Maps with the transit icon to get directions). Consider a trip on Memorial Day to visit the many veteran memorials and museums or in March to see the cherry blossoms .

Get an early start to enjoy a day trip to Boston . Amtrak travel time is about four hours (for faster travel, book tickets on the Acela). You can walk to major tourist attractions from South Station, including the Boston Tea Party Ships , Boston Public Garden , Faneuil Hall Marketplace and the Freedom Trail . You’ll have a few hours to explore, so plan accordingly. Consider a sightseeing tour to view the city in a short amount of time.

Note that you can also book your tickets to the Back Bay Station for easy access to two malls and shops and restaurants on  Newbury Street .

There are multiple places in the Hamptons with train stations including Montauk, East Hampton, Southampton, Westhampton, and Hampton Bays. But one of the closest and best for day trips from NYC is Westhampton.

From New York’s Penn Station , you can take any Long Island Rail Road service to Jamaica Station in Queens which depart every eight minutes. Some examples are the Babylon Branch and Hempstead Branch Services. 

Then, take another Long Island Rail Road Service heading to Montauk but hop off the train after a one hour and 40-minute journey at Westhampton Station . These trains leave around every two hours but there is one direct train from Penn Station to Westhampton Station every day.

Altogether, the journey should take no longer than two hours and 20 minutes and tend to cost no more than $30.50 for a single journey, often much less.

NYC to Hudson Valley Day Trip (for Fall)

Day Trip to Washington DC from NYC

One of the other great options for day trips from NYC by train if you want to visit another big city is Washington DC .

Book your timed tickets for the Washington Monument in advance. Find a bike or scooter rental so you can whiz around the White House, Lincoln Memorial, and all the other cool sights on the National Mall in one day.

Jones Beach Island

However, despite being famous for its educational facilities, New Haven is so much more than a University town.

With amazing art galleries, a fantastic museum, and even some Egyptian Revival Gateway, New Haven should certainly be on your list of places to visit outside of New York.

New Paltz is a gorgeous option when you’re looking for romantic weekend getaways from NYC. It’s a short drive (about 2 hours) but you can also get the train up there too – so it’s pretty easy to reach.

New Paltz is the country-life postcard. It’s beautiful fields and meadows, a little village with tons of charm, and it’s known for farm-to-table dining (great for foodies!).

Scranton is next on my list of weekend getaways from NYC. Located in northeast Pennsylvania, this TV-famous city is one of the best weekend getaways from NYC.

In case you weren’t aware, Scranton is the place in which The Office was set – cool, right!?

To be honest – this suggestion is pretty much for the Office fans out there (check out this road trip itinerary for filming locations !).

You’ve watched it on Netflix a million times, and there’s so much fun and nostalgia making it a location for your weekend getaway from NYC!

If you aren’t into The Office though, there’s plenty more to explore here than looking for some great merch. One of the most amazing things that Scranton has to offer in terms of attractions is the Steamtown National Historic Site.

Home to century-old locomotives that are set on a former rail yard, this museum is an absolute must-visit if you’re in the area! This is a quirky choice for weekend getaways from NYC, but a fun one!

Philadelphia

Ok, how could I write a list of weekend getaways from NYC – and not include Philly? Now, Philadelphia is huge, so you may not be able to see much on a day trip from the city, but it’s a great option for a weekend away from NYC.

With some of the best historic attractions in the U.S. (notably the Liberty Bell!), it’s unsurprising that Philadelphia is one of the top weekend getaways from NYC.

Oh, and if you do pay Philly a visit, be sure to check out some of the area’s restaurants. Did someone say Philly Cheese Steak?

Next on my list of weekend getaways from NYC, it’s Baltimore.

Just further down the coast from Philly, is Baltimore. I love Baltimore, it’s a small city, but it’s scenic and have this lovely charm to it, and there are plenty of things to do there.

Fort McHenry, which is the birthplace of the U.S. national anthem, “The Star-Spangled Banner,” can be found in Baltimore’s Inner Harbor – which means this placed is steeped in national history.

If that’s your thing! I love Baltimore for cute, romantic weekend getaways from NYC.

Sleepy Hollow

If you’re looking for weekend getaways from NYC around autumn and Halloween… then you really can’t go wrong with Sleepy Hollow.

You’ve probably heard of this place because of the movie (by the same name) but the good new is, it’s less than an hours drive from the city center and super easy to get to.

What makes Sleepy Hollow worth visiting? It’s a lovely change of pace to city life, and it’s got some unique stories tell.

There are also LOADS of things to do in Sleepy Hollow – so you could easily spend a few days there and pack your days full of activities.

Yes this is a slightly spooky weekend getaways from NYC… but I know some of your will love that it’s a bit different!

Port Jefferson Village

Next on my list of weekend getaways from NYC, it’s Port Jefferson Village.

Though Port Jefferson is a tiny village in Long Island, it’s certainly charming. With a population of only 7,750, you certainly won’t run into too many folks whilst on your travels here!

Despite being quite a sleepy town, there’s plenty to do here, which is why it’s next on our list of the best weekend getaways near NYC.

As Port Jefferson is a waterside town, we highly suggest checking out its beautiful waterfront views.

As the waterfront is packed with shops, coffee spots, and great restaurants, it’s the perfect place in which to relax and unwind if you’re finding yourself worn out from city life!

You’ll love this location for weekend getaways from NYC.

If you’re looking for a cute, quirky place to visit for your weekend getaways from NYC – then Rhinebeck would be a great choice. It’s easy to reach by train and by car – so it ticks those boxes!

In terms of weekend getaways from NYC – Rhinebeck is a pretty solid choice for a weekend away.

You have the nature and beautiful scenery of upstate New York, but you also have a bustling and very friendly town with lovely shops, cafes and restaurants to enjoy too. There are loads of things to do in Rhinebeck !

Next up on my list of weekend getaways from NYC… it’s Atlantic City.

Atlantic City is essentially New Jersey’s very own Las Vegas. Acting as a dedicated resort city on the Atlantic coast, Atlantic City is absolutely one of the top places to visit outside of New York.

Packed with casinos, wide beaches, and an iconic Boardwalk, it’s one of our favorite picks for day trippers.

If you’re not huge on gambling though, don’t fret, for Atlantic City has plenty more in store for you!

With numerous spas, famous entertainers, and some great high-end shopping on offer, you certainly won’t leave the AC disappointed. 

It’s a classic choice for weekend getaways from NYC – especially when a flight to Vegas seems too long and too far.

Another pretty commuter town on my list of weekend getaways from NYC!

This is another great choice for places to visit outside NYC. This is a lovely little town, packed full of gorgeous little stores and cafes, and friendly locals.

There are lots of things to do in Beacon to choose from, but I personally love the galleries and the cultural centre, and the Bannerman’s Castle (which isn’t far from the town centre).

This is a great place for weekend getaways from NYC and you’ll love it all year round.

Check out a spa hotel near NYC

If you’re not bothered by location when looking for weekend getaways from NYC, but want a beautiful hotel and some much-needed relaxation – then a great option to finding places to stay outside NYC, is just to search for a great spa hotel.

There are so many amazing spa hotels near NYC , located in beautiful countryside and with stunning views over the surrounding wilderness. So if you’re hoping to just get some peace and quiet – maybe looking at one of those spa hotels is a good plan!

Spa breaks are the most classic choice for weekend getaways from NYC, and there are so many great ones to choose from!

Next up on my list of weekend getaways from NYC… It’s Brooklyn.

OK… So Brooklyn isn’t exactly miles from Manhattan, but it’s very easy to get to and sometimes even somewhere super close can give you the escape you need from the crowded city.

Head to Brooklyn’s Botanical Gardens, or splurge on a spa hotel in Brooklyn. Or just take the train out to one of Brooklyn’s lovely suburbs and have a stroll around for the weekend. There’s so much to do there.

Croton Gorge Park

Next on my list of weekend getaways from NYC, it’s Croton Gorge Park.

If you’re just looking for a day trip for the weekend, then I really recommend Croton Gorge Park . It’s only a little north of the city, but it’ll give you that nature-fix city dwellers so often need.

There’s quite a few things to do in Croton Gorge Park, including fishing, hiking, walking, picnicing, sledding and skiing (in winter).

So it’s got it all really – and it’s pretty reliable all year round too. Oh and it’s really pretty! Definitely Instagram-worthy that’s for sure!

If you don’t mind driving a little further for you weekend getaways from NYC…

Remember also, if you don’t mind driving a little further afield in New York State when it comes to planning your weekend getaways from NYC… then some incredible places lie about 3-5 hours drive from the city, such as the Finger Lakes National Park.

BEACON AND COLD SPRING, NEW YORK

A short jaunt on the Metro North from New York City, these two little towns have become popular in spring, summer, and fall. They're beautiful, with DIA: Beacon the star around which a constellation of eating, drinking, and hotel options have sprung up. Since they're a quick car or train ride apart, you could see both in one day, if you like. Consider steak frites, ice cream by the water, drinks overlooking a rumbling waterfall, and a quaint B&B if you can't bear to leave so quickly.

The Patio at The Roundhouse Arrow

This former dye mill ( now hotel ) overlooks Beacon Falls, and boy are they gorgeous, particularly in the spring, summer, and fall from the seasonally open Patio Grill. (Mother Nature did good work on both the lighting and the water feature.) The menu changes all the time, and past hits have included a burger with smoked Gouda, fried shrimp with spicy mayo, and a pretty solid salad. Keep it simple and go for wine or beer on tap; cocktails are ambitious but don’t always hit the mark. This food isn’t going to blow your mind, nor will it break the bank: You’re here for that view.

Dogwood Arrow

One of a couple neighborhood bars where you can really feel the chill Beacon vibe, this one is studded with locals hunkered in their booths, or tipping back a few local on-tap drafts. You’ve got 16 taps on draft, solid cocktails but nothing fancy, and wine from California, France, and Italy, for the most part (we’d go with a pint). You're wanting a burger, some wings, jumbo stuffed tater tots, a pint, and some gossip. This place has all of it.

Hudson River Expeditions Arrow

This rustic kayak tour outfitter in Cold Spring takes you to the still-beautiful Bannerman Castle , which is in a state of photogenic dishabille . Guides tend to be on the very friendly side, and the folks hosting you at the castle itself are bookish and know their stuff. This late spring to early fall operation is pretty much right on the Hudson, which is perhaps why the folks running the show seem to understand the river itself. You’ll want to book in advance, but if you’re in the neighborhood, feel free to pop by just in case there are openings. They have a Peekskill, NY location, too.

Cold Spring Antiques Center Arrow

Tiny, cluttered, and wonderful, this is one of a clutch of great antiques and vintage shops peppering Main Street. Mix-and-match bakelite flatware (a steal) is packed in right alongside vintage Mister Rogers albums, and a lamp of a white monkey clutching a lightbulb. It’s a hoarder’s fever dream. Remember that half the pleasure of vintage and antique shopping is in The Dig. Spend some time shuffling through old photos, posters and the like, and you might just find a diamond in the rough. (But probably not an actual diamond.)

Storm King Art Center Arrow

Forget what you think you know about tiny, manicured sculpture gardens. Storm King Art Center—simply, Storm King to those fleeing the city to see it—is an extraordinary 500-acre outdoor museum just across the river from Beacon and Cold Spring, complete with works from Alexander Calder, Zhang Huan, and Sol LeWitt. In autumn, it’s hard to say what’s more striking here: the artwork or the scenery. Strap on your best walking shoes and pack a picnic. You’ll want to spend a day exploring here.

Pig Hill Inn Arrow

This 1825-era B&B is adorable, right on Cold Spring's Main Street, and comes with a fabulous breakfast. Rooms have four-poster beds, canopies, and lacy coverlets—all the details are spot-on, right down to the clawfoot tubs. There's a cute little "conservatory" for dining with other guests after a night of sleep, and you can sip wine in front of a wood-burning fire. Of all the older options downtown, this is the best by a longshot.

Moo Moo's Creamery Arrow

Small and quaint, with all the hallmarks you’ve come to expect of an ice cream shop—barely legible signs denoting ice cream flavors scrawled in every color, cute black-and-white tiled floors, teenage scoopers whose moods vary by the day—this is a great place for a to-go cone. Even New England ice cream snobs should be able to get behind the relatively creamy texture and straightforward flavors proffered here. (Think: coffee chip and chocolate Oreo.) The fanciest, Mexican chocolate, is good and punchy with the requisite cinnamon. The mouthfeel is what matters—buttery, luxe, and creamy, not icy—and Moo Moo’s usually nails it.

THE NORTH FORK, LONG ISLAND

Keep driving East and North from New York City. Let the last Burger King and Friendly's drop off in the rearview mirror. Observe as apple orchards, breweries, cows and Canadian geese pop into view. Marvel at how the vineyards seem to stretch right to the horizon. You're in the North Fork, baby. Shuck some oysters, hit the beach, have some wine, and most importantly, slow your roll.

Aldo's Arrow

Locals have been coming to this cozy café since it opened in 1987 to sip espresso drinks and chat over the day's news. It's such a neighborhood institution, even Starbucks closed after four years when it opened across the street. The coffee runs strong and we’d recommend it in latte or mocha form, to balance its intensity. Chocolate-dipped biscotti—which you can buy to go—croissants, and scones are the things to snack with your drink.

Little Creek Oyster Farm & Market Arrow

This nautical oyster hideout by the docks is tiny, popular, and fun, known for its slogan, “Shuck Your Self.” New Englanders and anyone else who grew up shucking their own oysters will delight that it’s half-price here ($20 versus $36 for a pre-shucked dozen) if you do so. If you don’t know where to start, someone will teach you. Oysters here are divine, since this restaurant is part of a local collective working with dozens of individual farmers and harvesters. If you’re here from The City, the wine prices by the bottle might make you a little weak-kneed. Pull yourself together and order a classic oyster pairing: Muscadet, Champagne, or—yes, it works—chocolatey Oyster Stout from Greenport Brewing.

1943 Pizza Bar Arrow

Intimate and simple, with burnt-orange walls and a wood-fired brick oven, crowds come to clamor over the attractive pizzas they're slinging. Even Ina Garten is a fan of these 14-inch thin-crust pies, with their prettily bubbled crusts. The options vary: You could do a margherita simply dressed with mozzarella, tomato sauce, and basil, or you could order the innovative clams casino (fresh clams, bacon, green peppers, and garlic on a white pie). This place can be a nice change from the hustling, bustling pizzerias of Manhattan .

Croteaux Vineyards Arrow

This is off the beaten path of the vineyards lining the North Fork, and it makes for a nice change of pace, with a wonderful garden and tasting barn, and delicious rosé. Everyone’s got a glass of rosé or bubbly rosé, and most folks will order a flight—they’re cheap by Manhattan standards. We love the selection of rosé sparklers, of which you can order a trio at a time, including the deep, juicy Cabernet Franc sparkler (if they have it). Do know that the bar is a warm-weather operation and will reopen before April.

White Flower Farmhouse Arrow

Farmhouse antiques are the specialties at this downtown Southold shop—as far as the eye can see—with home decor, kitchenware, and other finds in the mix. Maybe you need a mirror framed in distressed wood? An antique table? Hand-thrown ceramics or a few yard sale items just purchased in the French countryside? These are the vintage and “vintage-inspired” housewares and linens you dream about. If you're a New Yorker trying like hell to make your Brooklyn home into a tiny little country cottage, this is your place.  We’re not gonna say we’d fight you for the matched sets of Bakelite flatware or the cool blue-and-red vintage sailboat rental signs, but…

Brix & Rye Arrow

Cocktail obsessives have one daydream: to find a bar with excellent drinks for about a third of what they’d pay in New York or San Francisco . This is that bar. Order The Last Word if you’ve never had one, a Sazerac, or maybe something made with sherry, a fortified wine that drinks master Evan Bucholz understands how to wield wisely. Use those cocktails to wash down pizza from 1943 Pizza Bar next door. Whether you go for a white pie decked out with clams or a classic margherita, the food here—including some killer wood-fired meatballs—is better than most people expect.

American Beech Hotel Arrow

The design at American Beech fits somewhere between LA , Miami Beach, and Greenport . There are whitewashed suites, an Instagrammable bar, and large plants outside. Somehow, the three styles all come together to make one of the chicest places on the North Fork. There are only 12 rooms at this boutique hotel, so book in advance during peak season. Note that some are located over the bustling restaurant, so if you’re looking for peace and quiet, opt for one of the other rooms located around Stirling Square. This spot is as much about the restaurant and bar as it is the hotel. The roomy restaurant, which is closed during the winter, can accommodate large parties, so if you’re visiting the North Fork for, say, a bachelorette, this is a great choice. The menu hops around from cumin-cured duck wings to spaghetti squash latkes and a smash burger with cheddar.

Eagle's Neck Paddling Arrow

The employees of this kayak outfitter are locals, and they want you to relax—Orient Beach State Park is a national landmark, thanks to its unusual maritime forest and its plethora of great blue herons, egrets, ospreys, and crowned night herons. Guides can point out beautiful vistas, but you could also do that on your own. (Costs are similar whether you take the tour or not.) Outdoorsy types will love seeing how far they can get in two hours, and the lazy dabblers among us will enjoy just how chill kayaking can be.

North Ferry Company Arrow

This is a daily ferry leaving every 10, 20 or 30 minutes to take you to Shelter Island . You came all the way to Greenport. You want to see more of the water. For $2 each way, this is how you do it. This is the best way to get some beach time in—and truly escape the city—without paying much. Rent or bring a bike; the island is totally easy to get around on one. Then go to the beach with a bottle of something delicious.

Southold General

This café in the heart of tiny Southold village is the perfect mid-road-trip stop during a visit to the North Fork, no matter the time of day. In the mornings, they make excellent coffee (all the beans are La Colombe), satisfying breakfast sandwiches and A+ pastries. Midday, you can grab a fresh salad, an Italian sandwich or even a basket of fried chicken. And on weekend afternoons evenings, they’re churning out specialty woodfired pizzas. Plus, there’s house-made gelato all day long. If the weather is nice, the patio is a great spot to enjoy your meal.

Briermere Farms

This farmstand in Riverhead is beloved for its pies. Stop by on your way out to stock the kitchen of your weekend rental—your friends and family will thank you (and ask to stop there again on the way back into the city). Seasonal specialties include apple rhubarb, raspberry cream, cherry and chocolate cream. And why not through a couple of carrot cake cupcakes and a few jars of freshly made jam into the mix?

NORTH ADAMS, MASSACHUSETTS

Mass MoCA is a behemoth hub of the arts for many miles in every direction, playing host to artists as varied and marvelous as David Byrne, Wilco, Xu Bing, and Katharina Grosse. It's definitely a can't-miss, but as you drive here, marveling at the rolling hills and sprawling natural beauty, you'll want to know where to eat and sleep, too. One of our favorite boutique hotels is here, featuring a hot tub where you can sip bourbon under the stars, after a day at the museum. A trip to this part of the world is like hitting a reset button.

MASS MoCA Arrow

This sprawling museum lures history buffs and art fans alike. The 16-acre complex of 19th-century mill buildings occupies almost a third of the North Adams downtown business region. It is a mind-bending museum. James Turrell, Xu Bing, and Katharina Grosse are among the artists who revel in just how much space is here. The curation is smart, using the gargantuan ceilings and old trappings of the place to make you feel dwarfed, but not diminished. When you need a break, there is a brewpub here, a good café, ice cream, and a fine dining restaurant.

The Porches Inn at MASS MoCA Arrow

A string of 19th century Victorian row houses, lined by porches with slightly ominous identical rocking chairs. This place is dwarfed by Mass MoCA just across the street, but you notice the hotel owner’s attention to detail as soon as you park and see the lobby. The tub in your room will be so gorgeous you’ll want to pull it from the floorboards and take it home. And if you miss out on the hot tub, at night, under the stars and foliage, with a bourbon, neat, in your hand (they’re fine with that at the front desk), you are not doing it right. So long as you're not a diva needing to count threads in the sheets, Porches' style and attention to detail may just ruin you for other boutique hotels.

Cascade Waterfall Arrow

At the end of this hike is a picturesque, cold waterfall. The air is crisp and clean here, and it feels a bit like you fell off the map, in the best way. Relatively easy for beginning hikers, sometimes with a bit of mud at the end of the trail, this is a slightly tricky-to-find spot with unfortunately few easements. But if you don't mind muddying your boots a bit, and just want to stretch your legs without going all out, this one's for you.

Pedrin's Dairy Bar Arrow

The words on the awning say it all: “Pedrin’s Dairy Bar: Home of the Fish Fry.” Brace for MASS MoCA tourists and locals wishing they lived a little closer to the beach, all happily digging into sundaes and deeply fried fish ‘n chips. This is a quick fix for a few New England greats, all to be spread out over a white or red picnic table and—as they say—housed. Fried fish, clam strips, cheap burgers, and bountiful ice cream: This isn’t a place you walk away from feeling light on your feet, but some of us like to get all our indulgences in at one go.

Williams College Museum of Art Arrow

Dedicated art lovers know that there’s more to see in this corner of the Berkshires than the large-scale installations at MASS MoCA . Just down the road sits William College Museum of Art, or WCMA, a small but mighty museum that’s home to 15,000 pieces that range from ancient Egyptian and Assyrian to works from living American artists. The collection here has a bit of everything. There are outdoor sculptures, an archive dedicated to brothers Maurice and Charles Prendergast, and pieces from contemporary artists. Students at Williams College are lucky enough to be able to loan select pieces from the collection for a semester.

Tourists Arrow

Inspired by the American roadside motor lodge of yore, Tourists is built for contemporary design lovers with lots of light wood on the banks of the Hoosic River. Many of the large windows in guest rooms look straight into nature, helping blur the line between the outdoors and indoors. Opened in 2018, Tourists still feels like the cool new kid on the block with the clientele to match. For those exploring Williamstown and North Adams, Tourists is perfectly situated. It’s approximately three miles from the Clark Art Institute, MASS MoCA , and Bright Ideas Brewing . If you’re visiting this corner of the Berkshires, there’s nowhere more stylish to stay.

The Distillery at Greylock WORKS Arrow

The historic Greylock Works mill has been converted into a stylish home for this distillery from Colorado that relocated to the Berkshires and opened here in 2019. Inside the distilling room sits a 20 person bar that makes drinks exclusively from housemade liquors and is open on Friday and Saturday evenings—perfect for folks visiting from out of town. Take a bottle for your friends back home and know that for each bottle you buy, you’ll get a complimentary cocktail or flight.

PHILADELPHIA, PENNSYLVANIA

The City of Brotherly Love has been luring lovers of art and dining from NYC and Washington, D.C., in recent years, and can compete on the national level on both fronts. With arguably the best Israeli cuisine in America, a trio of knockout museums, and even a Four Seasons, it's a destination town. Here's where to sleep, drink, eat, and play in Philly right now.

Zahav Arrow

When James Beard Award-winning chef Michael Solomonov opened Zahav over a decade ago, it was one of only a handful of Israeli restaurants in the U.S. that served dishes other than hummus and shakshuka. Since then, upscale Israeli restaurants have sprouted in major cities across the country, and Americans have learned how to say "tehina." But despite the competition it's created, Zahav remains one of the best (if not the very best). Every meal here should start with Solomonov's silken hummus and laffa, a just-barely singed Iraqi flat bread, and salatim, a selection of Israeli salads and dips you can plunge that laffa into. From there, there's no wrong turn: Choose plates like chicken shishlik with plum, fennel, and sumac, or black sea bass tartare with bulgur and preserved orange. And save room for the restaurant’s iconic pomegranate-glazed lamb shoulder.

If you can’t score a table at Zahav, try Laser Wolf, which serves several salatim (Middle Eastern salads) and skewers like Yemenite beef kebabs and mushroom shishlik, which are kissed with charcoal.

Reading Terminal Market Arrow

All of humanity seems to have come together in a happy hubbub at Reading Terminal Market. The sprawling space has been around since 1893, though now, its vegetable, fish, and meat vendors are compounded by dozens of restaurants, bakeries, and bars. Look for old-timey neon signs to help you make sense of the dozens of options—or just head straight for DiNic's, where the roast pork sandwich, topped with a frenzy of broccoli rabe, is practically the beating heart of the place. Follow it up with a scoop (or three) of Bassett's silky ice cream.

Philadelphia Museum of Art Arrow

Classic, grand, and impressive, the Philadelphia Museum of Art is a cultural institution. It is Philadelphia's answer to the Louvre, and houses one of the country's finest collections of art and sculpture. Tourists, locals, the stroller set…the gang's all here and they're all taking in the art at their own pace. Some skip entire galleries based on interests, while others read every placard. It's a choose your own adventure kind of place. And if all of this culture makes you hungry, you're in luck. The Cafe is bright and welcoming and features a variety of tasty sandwiches, soups, pizzas, and more. Prefer to cool your heels in a more formal setting? The Stir is an elegant spot designed by Frank Gehry that's perfect for lingering and lunching.

Briar Vintage Arrow

Vintage for gentlemen! This extraordinary place, open to the public every third Saturday of the month, is one of a bevy of great vintage shops sprinkled around Philly, though it has some of the best men’s gear. Silk ascots, waistcoats, bowties, jackets, and an attentive owner who knows your size on site? It’s like stepping into a Gary Cooper vehicle. Don't leave without a smart vintage watch and, if you're feeling especially adventurous, a full tuxedo with tails.

Four Seasons Hotel Philadelphia at Comcast Center Arrow

This is a Four Seasons, so you can expect seamless service and a lot of greige carpeting. However, this particular outpost is somewhat unique in that so many big names were tapped for its creation: floral designer Jeff Leatham, composer Brian Eno, architect Norman Foster, and chefs Jean-Georges Vongerichten and Greg Vernick. Their contributions along with expansive skyline views from every vantage point on the property and passionate, genuine service could make this the beginning of a transformation of Philadelphia's hotel scene . 

La Colombe Arrow

La Colombe’s Fishtown location is unlike any of its many other outposts. The sprawling space is home to a roastery, a coffee laboratory, an open kitchen, a shop, and lots of seating. To call it a coffee shop would be to miss the point. There are fresh baked goods and other cafe standards aplenty here, but you’re really here for the coffee like pour overs, nitro lattes, and of course all of the espresso standards perfectly prepared. For coffee nerds or those with coffee lovers at home, there’s also a shop where you can pick up bags of La Colombe’s coffee to take home. Curious diners should consider stopping in for coffee and heading over to nearby Suraya for a Lebanese brunch.

Jim's South Street Arrow

Most cheesesteak shops in Philadelphia focus so closely on the rolls, onions, steak, and wiz, not to mention claiming the title of the best cheesesteak in the city, that a comfortable place in which to eat the sandwich is often overlooked. The team at Jim’s, which has been making cheesesteaks in Philly for almost 80 years, thankfully doesn't fall into that camp. Located on the corner of Fourth and South Streets, you can typically spot Jim’s before you arrive from the line snaking outside, down Fourth Street towards tattoo shops and piercing parlors. Once you’re inside, split up your team. While one person waits in line to place orders for cheesesteaks "wit whiz" (Cheese Whiz, that is), provolone, or American, or an Italian hoagie, the rest of the crew can head upstairs to stake out a table. It’s a bit of a production, but well worth it for a cheesesteak that never disappoints—and a place that lets you enjoy.

Independence National Historic Park Arrow

Philadelphia is the only UNESCO World Heritage City in the United States precisely because of the historical events that transpired right here, and it’s not just one museum or historic landmark. Rather, it’s a collection of buildings that played host to events that shaped American independence or honor that hard-won heritage. Begin at the Visitor Center to get your bearings and start your tour—visitors can enter with timed entry tickets—at Independence Hall, then stop by the Liberty Bell Center for a look at ostensibly the most famous broken item in the world. Afterwards, wander past the park’s other historic buildings including Carpenters Hall, the meeting site of the first Continental Congress, then make your way to the Benjamin Franklin Museum. Just note the airport-style security (and subsequent foot traffic) you're bound to encounter, and make sure you wear comfortable shoes—you'll be doing a lot of walking.

THE HAMPTONS, LONG ISLAND

This varied stretch of towns and hamlets along the south fork of Long Island’s east end is famous on so many fronts: as a tony playground for celebrities and the Manhattan elite, but also for its earthier roots—lush farms, beaches, and quaint villages. Do as the locals do, and hit the bakeries, sandwich spots, farm stands, and under-the-radar museums and galleries that really make it stand out. Then, you'll understand why the crowds beeline for spots like Southampton, East Hampton and Montauk as soon as the weekend hits.

Carissa's The Bakery Arrow

The most Williamsburg-ified place in the Hamptons, Carissa’s started as a tiny walk-in-closet-sized space but has graduated and expanded to a second, larger two-building space on Pantigo Road. At the new location, the house is still stocked with artful pastries that would impress at that dinner party your Hamptons host is throwing. But, there’s also a more fleshed out café menu and dinner offerings like fried Montauk monkfish and spaghetti al limone. You can (and should) still load up sourdough and pie though.

Pollock-Krasner House Arrow

This 19th-century shingle-style farmhouse in the Springs was home to the abstract expressionist painter Jackson Pollock and his wife, Lee Krasner, until the late '80s. It's been left pretty much intact: the shelves are filled with books, Krasner's necklaces still hang on hooks in the bedroom, and, most fascinatingly, the drips from Pollock's most famous paintings still cover the wooden floor in his studio. It's a seasonal site, open May through October.

Round Swamp Farm Arrow

The Hamptons are filled with "farm stands" that are really specialty food boutiques. This is one of them, and it's the absolute best. Fresh peaches, white corn, and blackberries from local farms, eggs from the neighboring Iacono chicken coop, and tasty prepared salads and pasta, but the real draw are the baked goods: lemon pound cake, mini chocolate chip cookies, and crumble-topped pies oozing with fruit. There aren't any prices on anything. You'll wince when they start ringing you up at the register, but the baked goods and fresh produce are as good as the people-watching.

Hampton Chutney Co. Arrow

A counter service Indian-ish café, it's known for its massive, delicious dosas served on big plastic lunch trays and filled with grilled curried chicken, jack cheese, fresh veggies and plenty of avocado. Skip the sandwiches. You're here for the crispy, light-as-air, longer-than-your-arm dosas that you'll think are too big for one person to finish alone (you'll be wrong). One bite and you'll wonder why every order isn't served on this crepe-like wonder. The breakfast dosa is a Sunday morning home run, and the curry chutney chicken is like a chicken salad sandwich that just came back from a semester abroad in New Delhi. Everything comes with your choice of chutney for dipping and spreading—they're all tasty, but you can't go wrong with the herby cilantro.

Bridgehampton Candy Kitchen Arrow

On-the-nose classic 1950's luncheonette. There's a striped awning and neon lettering out front, leather-covered stools at the counter, booths lining the wall, paper menus-slash-placemats. They're known for their homemade ice cream: the flavors are listed on a board above the counter, where waitresses have been blending milkshakes in old-school machines for years, and there's a case where you can buy gallon containers of the stuff by the door. Stick to the classics and don't pass up a milkshake or malt.

La Fondita Arrow

It's a seasonally-open taco shack (albeit one brought to you by the restaurateurs behind the chic Nick and Toni's ) off the highway in Amagansett, with reggaeton on the stereo, technicolor picnic tables on the grass outside, and guacamole served in little plastic tubs. There's a full menu of tortas, burrito bowls, salads, and tostadas, but tacos are the way to go. Get some chips and guac to start, then a few Baja-style fish tacos, chicken tingas, and al pastors. Wash it down with Jarritos or a Modelo.

Hither Hills State Park Arrow

Hither Hills is a network of trails that stretches across the narrow Montauk peninsula from the Long Island Sound to the Atlantic. Parts of it are heavily forested, best for mountain bikers or trail runners looking to get their miles in; the rest are open sand dunes that stretch onto a skinny, quiet beach on the sound, perfect for an adventurous walk or a picnic. Don't miss the Walking Dunes trail for its dramatic sandy bowls. In all, it's a respite from the rest of the Hamptons and a cool, totally unspoiled landscape to explore.

Baron's Cove Arrow

Baron’s Cove leans into the Hamptons lifestyle hard. If you don’t want to drop several million on a mansion, Baron’s Cove will give you a taste for the weekend. Located right along Sag Harbor cove, there’s a salt water pool in the summer, lounge chairs aplenty by said pool, and a preppy interior that looks like Ralph Lauren gave the decorator some tips. Guests can opt for a room that looks out onto the garden or the water. No matter where you stay, there will be nods to nautical design. With a full restaurant that services both guests and other visitors to Sag Harbor, you’ll never have to travel far for a meal here. But, this is the Hamptons, so prepare to shell out $25 for a breakfast sandwich or $26 for a lobster omelet at brunch. At dinner, opt for seafood options like the local catch of the day and a lobster caesar.

Parrish Art Museum Arrow

Driving down Route 27, you'll see what looks like a hyper-elongated modernist barn in an open field with two giant Roy Lichtenstein sculptures out front. This Herzog and de Meuron designed building is home to more than 2,600 works of art, many of them made by artists who lived and worked on the East End during their lifetimes, including Lichtenstein, Fairfield Porter, Willem de Kooning, and Dan Flavin. It's usually an older, quieter crowd—people are here to see the architecture and spend some time contemplating the art in the galleries. It never gets too crowded, unless it's a rainy day on a summer weekend.

KINGSTON, NEW YORK

This little city on the Catskills side of the Hudson River is in the midst of a transformation from scruffy underdog to bustling culture hub. From the charming vintage shops, secondhand bookstores and diners in the Stockade District to the chic homewares stores and wine bars in the waterfront Rondout area, it represents the full range of Upstate New York vibes—meaning there’s something for everyone.

Rosie General

The stretch of Broadway that leads down to the Rondout Creek is home to a fabulous array of shopping opportunities. Once you’ve worked up an appetite, head into Rosie General, a cozy but elevated take on the classic small-town General Store. At the front of the shop, they stock an incredible trove of local treats, from fresh farm produce to pickled veggies, artisanal salts and handmade sauces. In the back, there’s a counter serving freshly baked pastries, top-notch sandwiches (a recent spring visit featured a quickly devoured croque madame with ramps), and coffees. Everything in this abundantly stocked, sunlit boutique is just so elegant and thoughtful: a ceramic onion keeper from France, a trio of cheese knives with faux-horn handles, palo santo incense from Tibet, a candle shaped like a bundle of asparagus. If you’re ever in need of a unique hostess, housewarming or wedding present, this is a must.

Lovefield Vintage

This cheerful vintage store in the Stockade District hits the rare sweet spot of well curated and well priced—while you’re not finding crazy Goodwill deals here, you won’t feel gouged either. And everything feels cared for, considered, and clean. Think sweet embroidered 1950s sun dresses, funky printed men’s shirts from the ’80s, and kooky contemporary accessories and jewelry for a bit of extra fun. Once you’ve picked out your treasures, walk down the street to Half Moon Books for more secondhand hunting.

Perched on a roundabout just by the I-87 ramp, this nouveau drive through is perfectly positioned to fuel your drive back to the city or up into the Catskills. The tightly edited menu features the three classics: burgers, fries, and milkshakes. The secret? Everything is meatless (there is dairy.) The burgers are made with Impossible patties and the shakes are spun with Oatly—but don’t worry, you won’t miss a thing. Everything is decadent, delicious and somehow even more satisfying.

Brunette Arrow

On any given night, this bright, charming wine bar in the Rondout has at least 14 wines by the glass on offer, from skin contact Mtvane from Kakheti, Georgia to more traditional sips like Chenin Blanc from the Loire Valley. If you’re new to natural wines, don’t be shy about asking questions—they’d be happy to help you dive into their ever-changing array of natural-leaning bottles sourced from around the world—or walk you through their selection of cider, locally made sake, sherry, and beer. Standouts from the food menu include trout roe nachos, house-made pork-duck-fig paté, and a hearty kale caesar with savory granola and garlicky breadcrumbs. Happen to be in the neighborhood before you’re ready for cocktail hour? Area Coffee Co. operates out of their space Thursdays-Sundays.

HUDSON, NEW YORK

Hudson , a small city perched above the east side of the Hudson River, has come to represent everything people love about “Upstate”: bucolic vistas, artisanal shops run by local creatives, charming 19th Century architecture and an elegantly laid-back vibe. Over the past decade, it’s been transformed from a sleepy town beloved by antique hunters to a stylish escape for city dwellers of all stripes, complete with design-centric hotels, sleek boutiques, and a thriving bar and restaurant scene that attracts foodies from all over the region. And you don’t even need a car to get there—you can take the Metro North from Manhattan and easily explore the scene of Warren Street on foot.

Talbott & Arding

This is where you’ll build the charcuterie board of your dreams—whether you’re consuming it in the Airbnb you rented for the weekend or on the train back to the city. Yes, they make fabulous (and expensive) sandwiches and prepared foods that are perfect for an elevated picnic lunch, but the real draw here is the incredible cheeses, crackers, jams, and cured meats that you’ll want to enjoy with a crisp local beer. It’s also just so airy and elegant inside, all the better to display the specialty pantry essentials you’ll be tempted to take home with you, from linen tea towels to basil vinegar. Perhaps the bougiest thing they carry: a S’mores Kit featuring Bourbon flavored dark milk chocolate, and housemade marshmallows graham crackers.

Les Indiennes

Tucked among the many vintage and antique stores along Warren Street, this home goods store features hand block printed pillows, bedding, curtains and tablewares in gorgeous natural hues. Whether you’re decorating a whole house or just looking to add a bit of pizzazz to your bathroom in the form of an all-over floral print, this is a lovely place to visit and get inspiration—their napkin sets also make for a really nice gift.

Imagine if REI and the most stylish designer boutique you’ve ever seen got married and had a baby. That baby would be Westerlind. They stock a somehow perfect mix of outdoor apparel (merino wool base layers, hiking boots, water bottles) and upscale-but-low-key clothing (colorful cashmere sweaters, Italian wool trousers, oversized cotton oxford shirts) that perfectly encapsulates the aspirational Hudson aesthetic. The little things in the mix are just as thoughtfully curated: Kinto tumblers to keep your coffee hot on a hike, fuzzy socks for lounging by the fire, and cool baseball caps to protect you from the sun.

Backbar Arrow

Is this a bar? A vintage shop? A restaurant? Backbar looks a bit like all three. But, at its core, it’s a bar with food worth getting in a car for. Zak Pelaccio, who once operated Fatty Crab in Manhattan , and later decamped to the Hudson Valley, is behind the project. It's geared towards locals but will allow those visiting for the weekend to join in. Pull up a seat at the bar or in the large outside space if the weather’s nice. With a name like Backbar, it’s fair to expect high level drinks. That expectation is certainly met with simple but well executed cocktails like the Bee’s Knees with Citadelle Gin, honey, and lemon, and slushies like the Lucy, made with tequila, fresh lime juice, and topped with Prosecco. There’s also a board for local beer offerings and cocktail specials. If you're in Hudson, you really shouldn't miss Backbar, regardless of whether you're with your partner, parents, or friends.

Fortunately, the location of our fine city affords easy access to many other exciting, yet more relaxed destinations. These weekend getaways from NYC offer fun, relaxation and a little something different not too far from home.

Whether you’re taking a car or public transportation, these destinations are easily accessible in five hours or less. Enjoy nature, chill by a lake, take in some art or do a little shopping. From quaint towns to beachy locales, a weekend away will be just the thing to recharge. If you don’t have a whole weekend to spare, consider one of these day trips from NYC . Looking for a longer getaway? A road trip from NYC might be for you. 1.  bear mountain, ny.

In the time it would take to make it across town during rush hour, adventurers can get to Bear Mountain for an easy escape from city madness.

Do this: The state park, situated in the mountains rising from the west bank of the Hudson River, which offers a bevy of hiking and biking trails, as well as picnic groves, lake and river fishing access, a swimming pool and a zoo.

Stay here: Bear Mountain Inn , originally built in 1915, hosted Eleanor Roosevelt, Harry Truman and Dwight Eisenhower back in the day, and has been extensively renovated to include 15 luxury guest rooms, plus a spa and a restaurant. 

2.  Asbury Park, NJ

The summertime gay community in this shore town has actually been active since the 1950s—and over the past few years, the scene’s really heated up.

Eat here: MOGO Korean Fusion Tacos, a favorite among both visitors and locals. 

Stay here: Berkeley Oceanfront Hotel , which was originally designed by noted Beaux Arts architect Whitney Warren.

3.  Beacon, NY

Beacon is steeped in history (Beacon Mountain, the tallest point of the Hudson Highlands, played a significant role in the American Revolution), but besides its storied past, it’s also packed with modern-day culture. The city has an arty, indie spirit that attracts…arty, indie people.

Do this:  A former Nabisco box-printing facility on the banks of the Hudson, Dia:Beacon holds collections from the 1960s to the present. Exhibitions meld with works on long-term view from artists including Walter De Maria and Dan Flavin. 

Stay here: Sitting at the base of Mount Beacon—a mile and a half from the town’s center—the Swann Inn of Beacon is a charming bed-and-breakfast. Situated in an 1866 Gothic house, it has five uniquely decorated rooms, which all have retro-cool vibes that would make Wes Anderson blush, including the Red Parlor Suite, a romantic respite complete with a friggin’ front porch). 

4.  New Hope, PA

New Hope is Bucks County’s jewel, unhurried and unassuming, with indie boutiques, seasonal-focused eateries and forget-all-your-troubles B&Bs galore. Between hopping to different quaint spots, be sure to get back to nature. We suggest cruising on a rented bike down the Delaware Canal towpath.

Do this: With 134 acres featuring hundreds of species of native plants (including more than 80 that are rare or endangered) and stunning woodlands and meadows throughout, Bowman’s Hill Wildflower Preserve offers guided walks in addition to talks and workshops (“Focus on Ferns,” anyone?). 

Stay here: A AAA Four Diamond winner for eight consecutive years, The Inn at Bowman’s Hill is damn swoonworthy. Rooms, like Fountain View and Orchard Retreat, have heated tubs for two—if that’s your bag. For platonic pals, there’s the Penthouse Suite, with its private deck and panoramic views of the property. 

5.  New Paltz, NY

Beyond all the worth-the-trip views of riverside bluffs and verdant trees, New Paltz is the most historic on this list, with preserved houses that were around 100 years before we even became the U.S. of A. So, yeah. Pretty old.

Do this: Learn about the lives of the 17th-century Huguenot settlers , as performers (dolled up in duds from the period) take you through 30 buildings over 10 acres, including seven historic homes and a reconstructed 1717 church. (Want to retain the back-to-basics spirit as you take in the National Historic Landmark District? Leave the selfie stick at home.) 

Stay here: Mohonk Mountain House , set in the Shawangunk Ridge on Lake Mohonk, is sporting and sophisticated, a sort of East Coast version of The Shining grounds (without all the killing and stuff). Whether you choose one of the classic, wood-paneled rooms and suites or one of its private cottages two miles away, your nightly rate gets you access to a range of complimentary activities like boating and swimming, not to mention meals in its dining room. 

6.  Lake Placid, NY

The beloved lake is just the beginning: This prime Adirondacks spot features art, shopping, hiking, swimming and one killer mountain. 

Do this: If you're already planning to go out to admire all the greenery upstate New York has to offer, visiting The Wild Center is a must if you want to experience truly unreal nature views. That is, as long as you aren't afraid of heights. Why? Oh, because when you go, you'll be walking an elevated trail across the Adirondack treetops. No big deal!

Stay here:  The seven-acre, 131-unit Mirror Lake Inn can’t be beat. Every room looks over the lake, and the cozy fireside accommodations (along with two restaurants and a spa) will keep you in your robe late into the day. Or check in to the aesthetic and cozy Eastwind Lake Placid .

7.  Hudson, NY

2hrs 20mins from NYC

You’ve probably heard a lot about Hudson , and here’s why: food and antiques. The place does both extremely well—it’s a prime option for rustic fine dining (Ca’Mea) and rare retro finds (just about any storefront on Warren Street). But the other big reason why droves of New Yorkers and, fittingly, DIY businesses and developments are staking their claim on the town is because it’s all ensconced in a gorgeous Hudson River–side environment, dotted with quaint historic homes.

Eat here: The communal, high-end restaurant Wm. Farmer and Sons has a cozy-yet-urban energy, serving up bar snacks, small plates and big plates that make use, whenever possible, of local ingredients. 

Stay here:  The Hudson Whaler beautifully blends old-timey flavor with contemporary amenities. Set in an Art Deco building, the hotel has 16 well-appointed guest rooms with sleek, sculptural furnishings that match the Deco tone, as well as free Wi–Fi, an iPad lending library, Keurig coffeemakers, pillow-top mattresses and Lather Aromatherapy bath products.

8.  Phoenicia, NY

2hrs 30mins from NYC

Tucked into the Catskills, this Ulster County hamlet is a real melting pot, the kind of place where you can expect to see a conservative old-timer and a Brooklyn lumbersexual sipping Buds along the bar in perfect harmony. For every no-nonsense staple (Phoenicia Diner), there’s a hipster newbie (the Graham & Co.). The mellow, no-frills, hippie-dippie local culture makes it easy for anyone to relax here.

Do this:  Explore downtown Phoenicia, go whitewater tubing on Esopus Creek, or explore Kaaterskill Falls. Phoenicia has plenty of adventures, from mild to wild. 

Stay here: Located directly on Esopus Creek in the heart of the Catskills,  Phoenicia Black Bear Campground  is rustic without being primitive. Choose your own adventure: There’s swimming, biking, horseback riding and more nearby. 

9.  Shelter Island, L.I.

A midsize island just a seven-minute ferry ride from Greenport, NY, and surrounded by Shelter Island Sound and Gardiner’s Bay, Shelter Island is all about unwinding, with historic plantations, unassuming cafés, kayaking and, of course, those views that will make your pals rageful that they didn’t join you.

Do this: With more than 2,000 acres of tidal creeks, mature oak woodlands, fields and freshwater marshes, Nature Conservancy’s Mashomack Preserve is one of the richest habitats in the Northeast. Edged in white by 12 miles of coastline, Mashomack attracts birders and botanists looking for ospreys and a number of rare plants—and regular people like us who just want our Facebook feed to look awesome. 

Stay here: Every room at the perennially popular Sunset Beach Hotel has a private sundeck with water views (and loads of Kiehl’s products in the bathrooms, yay). Sunset Beach’s area, with its curving shoreline and spectacular light, is pretty darn similar to the French Riviera.

10.  The Berkshires, MA

Think of the Berkshires as the Hamptons, minus the nightlife and plus all the art, theater, dance, music and small-town simplicity you could want. Yes, the mountainous region in western Massachusetts has luxury, but it’s served in a laid-back setting. And given its jaw-dropping bucolic backdrop, there’s no shortage of outdoor activities, either.

Do this: One of the country’s largest centers for contemporary art, MASS MoCA , which is set in a converted factory building, focuses on large-scale, immersive installations that more conventional museums just can’t handle. There’s just as much focus on performing arts as there is on visual here; each year touts more than 75 performances of music (Wilco’s Solid Sound Festival has been held here), dance, films, theater and more.   Another surefire bet for the performing arts is Shakespeare & Company in nearby Lenox. The thriving regional theater company mixes traditional Shakespearean productions with contemporary works across multiple, indoor and outdoor stages. And do we need to mention that weed is legal here? Try paying a visit to the closest cannabis dispensary to the New York state border: the chic and friendly Rebelle located in Great Barrington.

Stay here: Oriented toward health, wellness and pampering, Canyon Ranch , which is centered around the century-old, lovingly restored Bellefontaine Mansion, has a lot to offer: tennis, aerobics, guided hikes and bike rides, canoeing, croquet and more than 40 seminars and classes daily such as “Finding Forgiveness.” After all that fresh air and, er, learning, relax in the spa while enjoying the signature Canyon Stone Massage or the candlelit Euphoria body treatment. 

11.  Cape May, NJ

Rediscover your inner summertime kiddie at this seaside destination, which has some of the East Coast’s most unspoiled beaches. The unpretentious fun peaks on Fourth of July weekend—when a full-on carnival and an impressive fireworks display bring in throngs of people—but the good times continue throughout the season, with boardwalk vendors and even dolphin-spotting tours.

Do this: Yup, Jersey Shore Alpacas sounds like an MTV spin-off (and it’d be an awesome one). At this small alpaca farm in Green Creek, a quaint town right next to Cape May, mingle with the critters—well taken care of by owners Jim and Tish Carpinelli—during Open Farm Saturdays, when you can meet the cute creatures at the fence and feed them (carrots are provided). 

Stay here: Cape Resorts . One of the area’s Victorian buildings, the 200-year-old Congress Hall is America’s oldest oceanfront resort. It has 104 rooms, as well as a restaurant, bar and lounge, outdoor pool, spa and a fitness center. But despite the full-service amenity list, the best things here are the simple ones, like the smell of salty sea air outside your open window. (Book an Atlantic-view room for the best relaxation results.) 

12.  Philadelphia, PA

2hrs from NYC by car, 1hr and 23min by train 

Aside from the wild football fans and patriotic Liberty Bell-seekers, the city of brotherly love caters to the artistic set through major attractions such as the Philadelphia Museum of Art. Go to get cultured, but stick around for the amazing restaurants, beer gardens and the cheesesteaks ( duh ) that truly make the city a smash.

Do this: As the crown jewel of the Benjamin Franklin Parkway, the  Philadelphia Museum of Art should arguably be the first stop on your list. (Yes, even before the aforementioned cheesesteak). Inside, you’ll find an impressive collection of 19th-and early-20th-century paintings and artifacts. After peeping the creative works, refuel at Reading Terminal Market . The famous indoor farmer’s market hawks everything from food and housewares to speciality snacks and treats all under one roof. Grab a takeaway treat from notable sellers like Famous 4th Street Cookie Company, Beiler’s Doughnuts and Little Thai Market. Once you’re full, head to Independence Beer Garden (an outdoor brew den) to down a few pints while playing games like giant jenga. What’s missing? Oh, right: End your night with a cheesesteak at any one of these spots.

Stay here:  Rest your head at the Kimpton Hotel Monaco . This is one of the city’s coolest hotels with post-modern meets art-deco inspired decor and a trendy rooftop bar. Added bonus: The hotel is located right next to Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell.

13.  The Hamptons, L.I.

2.5 hrs from NYC

The Hamptons’ gorgeous sandy respites, dunes and relatively untouched landscapes aren’t just for the jet set. The area boasts gratis culture (the Dan Flavin Art Institute ) and no-nonsense places to eat ( Lobster Roll ) and drink (Fellingham’s), plus plenty of other casual nooks for the rest of us.

Do this: Coopers Beach  is the only stretch of silky, fine-grained white sand in Southampton that’s open to the public. So you can look like a baller in your sunset Instagram pic—without having to actually throw down a ton of dough. 

Otherwise, you pay to park at Main Beach in East Hampton or park and walk to Montauk’s Kirk Park Beach. 

Don’t miss a trip to the Montauk Lighthouse for some gorgeous views or a shopping spree in Sag Harbor.

Stay here: Privacy, luxury and amenities reign supreme at the Reform Club . The main building houses seven suites with wood-burning fireplaces (you’ll want to turn them on, even in the summer, just for the fun of it), oversize marble baths and white wainscot walls with original artwork. 

14.  Cooperstown, NY

4hrs from NYC

Cooperstown has way more than baseball, and every true brew head knows this. With four breweries in town, Cooperstown was once the country's hops-growing capital.

Do this: Brewery Ommegang , is located on a 135-acre hops farm and offers daily tours. 

Stay here: The Otesaga , the charming (and reportedly haunted) historic hotel, is celebrating its 106th anniversary. It offers fishing and boating—and serves Ommegang beer, to boot.

15.  Newport, RI

4hrs 30mins from NYC

It’d be easy to dismiss the town as a tourist trap, but what often brings people back to Newport (other than yacht races, tours of a Vanderbilt mansion and smiley locals) are the newish spots.

Eat here: Revolving Door , where regional and national chefs hunker down for several weeks—sometimes up to a month—creating, cooking and serving an inspired prix-fixe menu.

Stay here: The Attwater , a design-driven seven-room boutique hotel off of historic Bellevue Avenue, recently acquired a Victorian manor next door and renovated it from top to bottom.

Lucky for you, there are countless appealing destinations reachable via a quick train ride or road trip from the Big Apple, all with plenty of activities, hotels, and restaurants to fill a weekend. These East Coast escapes provide the respite needed—quiet nature walks, visits to local art galleries, a day trip here and there, fresh seafood dinners served in waterfront settings—and are all only a tank of gas away from Manhattan and Brooklyn. • Best for : A laid-back beach getaway

A relaxed alternative to upscale beach towns in the Hamptons just to the west, Montauk is best known for its surf breaks, like the ones at Ditch Plains and the Terrace. So pack your swimsuit, sign up for a surfing lesson, and plan on eating as much seafood as you can.

What to do in Montauk

For breakfast, head to Montauk Bake Shoppe for its famous jelly croissant (coffee snobs can get their needs met at Left Hand Coffee ). Don’t miss the sunset views dinner at Duryea’s , a classic seafood shack right on the water overlooking Fort Pond Bay. Close out the night by drinking a beer or two with locals at Shagwong Tavern , a dive bar in the center of the village that’s been open since 1936.

Between meals, take a surf lesson or rent gear at Engstrom Surf , located at Marram Hotel. Beginners are in safe hands with the Engstrom siblings—Leif, Ariel, and Lexi are all world-renowned surfers—who will have you paddling out and attempting to catch waves in no time. If you prefer being on the water instead of in it, you can book a private charter for groups of anywhere from 2 to 100 passengers with Catamaran Mon Tiki for a sunset cruise departing from Star Island in Lake Montauk.

2. Hudson Valley, New York

• Best for : Scenic hikes and small towns filled with creative energy

For New Yorkers, the rolling hills and dense pine forests of the Hudson Valley offer a welcome escape from the chaos of the city—but the appeal of this beautiful valley lies well beyond its tree-lined hiking trails and inviting swimming holes. The small, postindustrial towns that line the Hudson River are buzzing with creative energy that make it an excellent choice for a weekend trip.

What to do in the Hudson Valley

The towns of Nyack, Saugerties, Kingston, and Hudson are all known for their antique scenes and selection of award-winning eateries and cafés. In Kingston, the homey Brunette wine bar and Savona’s Trattoria on Broadway warrant a detour, and in Hudson, don’t miss Feast and Floret , the reincarnated Fish and Game (which closed in 2020) that’s now an Italian restaurant serving dishes like rigatoncini alla norma and pork ribs with cipollini and Concord grape reduction. Also make time for an all-American feast at Phoenicia Diner , a 1960s establishment that’s been restored (and the menu spruced up) for modern enjoyment.

Absolutely do not sleep on the breweries, some of which host live music now and then. West Kill Brewing on a historic 127-acre dairy farm in the Catskills makes the kind of IPAs you want to bring home by the 30-pack. Woodstock Brewing , right down the street from Phoenicia Diner, has a creative tap list (Baby Dragon pale ale for the win) and treats you like family.

Those interested in spending the full weekend outdoors should pass through Phoenicia, the starting point for popular day hikes to Hunter Mountain and Kaaterskill Falls. Art-focused travelers should spend a day strolling through shops along Beacon’s Main Street before touring Dia Beacon , a 300,000-square-foot art museum housed in a former Nabisco box printing factory. Farther north, Woodstock makes for a fun afternoon of window shopping and dessert eating (go just for Peace, Love and Cupcakes and Bread Alone ).

Where to stay in the Hudson Valley

The Hudson Valley and Catskill Mountains have so many cozy bed-and-breakfasts and contemporary boutique hotels that the hardest part of planning a trip to the region can be deciding where to sleep. A few of the most ogle-worthy accommodations in the bucolic upstate New York area include the Urban Cowboy Lodge in Big Indian, the DeBruce in Livingston Manor, Scribner’s Catskill Lodge in Hunter, Eastwind Hotel & Bar in Windham, the Graham & Co. in Phoenicia, Wm Farmer and Sons in Hudson, and the brand-new (as of 2022) Wildflower Farms in Gardiner, which was on AFAR’s list of the best new hotels in 2022.

3. North Fork, Long Island, New York

• Distance : two hours by car; three hours by train from Penn Station
• Best for : Wine, food, and ocean vistas

Local wineries. Bucolic pastures. Farm-to-table food scenes. Oysters and lobster rolls up and down the coast. The North Fork feels worlds away from the concrete jungle of New York City , though it’s only 90 miles out to the northeastern peninsula.

What to do in the North Fork

A weekend on the North Fork isn’t complete without some winetasting. Long Island’s terroir has drawn comparisons to French wines—specifically France’s Bordeaux region—and Napa Valley in California because these wine countries share roughly the same latitude. Spend an afternoon exploring vineyards along the Long Island Wine Trail; Kontokosta Winery is the North Fork’s only waterfront winery, located in Greenport, and Castello di Borghese Vineyard and Winery is the region’s oldest vineyard.

To experience the area’s beautiful beaches, charter a boat with Peconic Water Sports and spend the day on the bay, or hop the ferry from downtown Greenport and relax on Shelter Island, a nature-filled refuge between the North and South Forks. Rent a bike on-property at Sound View and head toward Greenport’s main avenue to shop vintage clothes, vinyl records, and antique home decor at superbly curated boutique shops such as the Times Vintage and Lido . For lunch, head to Little Creek Oyster Farm & Market to enjoy shuck-your-own oysters, and don’t miss lunch or dinner at Salumeria Sarto , a tiny, 16-seat Italian restaurant on the waterfront that’s a Salumeria by day and Osteria by night.

Where to stay in the North Fork

Make for North Fork’s largest town, Greenport, which offers a laid-back alternative to flashier Long Island escapes like the Hamptons. Use Sound View Greenport as your base for the weekend—the revamped 1950s motel is now a 55-room waterfront hotel with a private beach, mixing New England modernist with coastal minimalism (think crisp, clean lines everywhere). Its sister property, Harborfront Inn at Greenport , is another family-friendly option.

4. Adirondacks, New York

• Distance : 4.5 hours by car via the Taconic State Parkway
• Best for : Exploring a state park filled with old-growth forests

With the everyday hustle and bustle of life in the metropolis, it’s easy to forget that a 6-million-acre state park —larger than Yellowstone , the Everglades, Glacier, and Grand Canyon National Parks combined—can be reached within the boundaries of New York State, just under five hours from Manhattan. The Adirondacks contain state-protected preserves filled with old-growth forests, waterfalls, glistening streams, and sparkling lakes, but because the area isn’t a national park, there’s no entrance fee.

What to do in the Adirondacks

Visitors can canoe or kayak on Lake George, a 32-mile-long body of water nicknamed “The Queen of American Lakes” in the heart of the Adirondack Mountains. The state park also has more than 2,000 miles of hiking trails that cater to every skill level, from low-key nature strolls to strenuous summit climbs up the Adirondack High Peaks.

For a true Adirondack experience, spend the weekend at a historic “Adirondack Great Camp .” During the early 20th century, industrial behemoths of the Gilded Age vacationed in the Adirondack Mountains, where they built mansion-like log cabins decorated with granite fireplaces and furniture crafted from branches. Today, you can stay in a number of these lodges, including The Point , a great camp built by William Avery Rockefeller on 75 acres of Saranac Lake shorefront nearly a century ago, and White Pine Camp , the one-time Summer White House of President Calvin Coolidge.

5. Berkshires, Massachusetts

• Distance : 3.5 hours by car via the Taconic State Parkway
• Best for : An art-filled escape

Adventure and art enthusiasts will find their ideal getaway in the Berkshires, a mountainous area in western Massachusetts that, in recent years, has become a Northeastern epicenter of culture thanks to a rush of entrepreneurs transforming the region’s formerly derelict buildings into contemporary galleries and lodging.

What to do in the Berkshires

Stay the weekend in North Adams, a small city near the Vermont state line that’s home to the Massachusetts Museum of Contemporary Art (MASS MoCA) , a 19th-century factory mill complex turned modern center for world-class art. Roam more than 2,000 square feet of the museum’s sprawling exhibition space, then head outdoors to nearby Mount Greylock and traverse hiking trails that lead to the highest point in Massachusetts.

Where to stay in the Berkshires

Check into Tourists , a sleek, ecofriendly lodge opened in 2018 by John Stirratt (the bassist with the Chicago alt-rock group Wilco) in North Adams’s previously rundown Redwood Motel.

Nantucket isn’t the quickest weekend getaway from New York, but it’s worth the journey.

6. Nantucket, Massachusetts

• Distance : six hours by car and ferry
• Best for : Eating-fresh seafood

Nantucket is an ideal destination for anyone who wants to eat (and eat, and eat), buy books , ride a bike to the beach, learn about the whaling industry , fly a kite, all while marveling at the iconic 1700s clapboard homes.

What to do in Nantucket

Head to The Nautilus , which has a location in Nantucket and one in Boston, for its stand-out cocktails and fusion menu (Korean and Hawaiian small plates all the way to Szechuan-style dandan noodles and a mind-blowing Peking duck). Its sister restaurant the Gaslight is popular among locals for its low-key setting, killer yakitori, and live music. Pick up sandwiches from Born and Bread for a beach picnic, or dig into a dish of oysters from Cru while sitting on the waterfront.

Whether or not you’re a history buff, the Whaling Museum is a must-do to learn the basics of Nantucket’s past—the Wampanoag people, notable abolitionists and suffragettes, 19th-century industry and transportation—as well as its legacy in the whaling industry. Private and self-guided walking tours of the island’s historic neighborhoods and architecture are also a highlight. Nantucket is also the perfect place to rent a bike—try Young’s Bicycle Shop on Broad Street or Nantucket Bike Shop —and follow any of these recommended bike paths .

Where to stay in Nantucket

Near Main Street, historic three-story brick mansion Jared Coffin House has gorgeous rooms that celebrate history-making women, like abolitionists Anna Gardner and Lucretia Coffin Mott. Greydon House has one of our favorite outdoor terraces though boutique hotel, Life House is a close contender with its outdoor firepit and relaxed, convivial vibe. Luxurious White Elephant has multiple residences and suites for families, while the Nantucket Hotel and Resort has a terrific pool and kids club.

Getting to Nantucket

From New York City, it’s a deceptively long trip by car: a five-hour drive to Hyannis on Cape Cod, where you pick up the high-speed ferry that gets you to Nantucket in an hour. From late April through early December, Tradewind Aviation runs scheduled flights between Nantucket Memorial Airport and Teterboro, New Jersey; and White Plains, New York. (Private charters are available between Nantucket and Farmingdale and Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C.) It takes about an hour and costs $875.

Greenwich boasts four beaches on the Long Island Sound: Greenwich Point, Byram Beach, Island Beach (Little Captain’s Island), and Great Captain’s Island.

7. Greenwich, Connecticut

• Distance : one hour by train from Grand Central
• Best for : A relaxing coastal getaway

Only an hour by train from Manhattan, Greenwich, Connecticut, is commonly noted as the “Gateway to New England.” For weekend visitors, the affluent community offers many of the cosmopolitan comforts found in New York City (high-end shopping, spas, and upscale restaurants), but unlike the city, Greenwich’s hot spots are set among the green landscapes and relaxing vibe of coastal Connecticut.

What to do in Greenwich

Don’t leave Greenwich without trying fresh seafood at L’Escale , a palatial waterfront restaurant inside the upscale hotel, Delamar Greenwich Harbor . If shopping stays high on your travel agenda, head to the luxury boutiques along the central Greenwich Avenue (nicknamed “the Ave”) and browse the latest trends at stores such as Hermès and Saks. For more laid-back R&R, visit nearby recreational areas like Byram Shore Park and Great Captain’s Island , or head to Greenwich Point Park to enjoy a long sunset stroll alongside the sweeping Long Island Sound.

Book a room in the waterside Delamar Greenwich Harbor hotel; some guest rooms have balconies overlooking the harbor. Or check-in to a luxurious suite at the J House Greenwich . Both hotels are excellent options for a wellness moment, with full-service spas on site.

The quaint seaside town of Mystic is about so much more than pizza.

8. Mystic, Connecticut

• Distance : three hours by car; four hours by Amtrak from Penn Station
• Best for : Pizza, beer, and learning about the town’s nautical history

Even if you’re not obsessed with the 1988 Julia Roberts rom-com focused on Mystic Pizza and set in Mystic itself, come for the same riverside charm that delighted screenwriter Amy Jones. Historic downtown Mystic looks every part a New England village, picture pretty with clapboard homes and storefronts, colonial-era steeples, and old sea captains’ residences. It’s the kind of family-friendly getaway where you’ll slow down, sip cider from a 19th-century mill, check out the iconic aquarium, and eat. And eat. And eat.

What to do in Mystic

Don’t feel guilty about multiple stops at Sift Bake Shop , co-owned by pastry chef Adam Young, a Food Network “Best Baker in America”—or that you’re chasing the sticky bun with an apple cider doughnut and hot cider a short drive away at B. F. Clyde’s Cider Mill . The last steam-powered cider mill in the United States (c. 1881), B.F. Clyde’s feels like a time warp. Make a reservation at Oyster Club or Shipwright’s Daughter for a fancier dinner out without the kids. And, of course, eat a slice or two at memorabilia-heavy Mystic Pizza .

Spend a morning exploring the locally owned shops in downtown Mystic ( Trove Men’s Provisions feels like an old-school haberdashery and Hang the Moon focuses on women-made, ecofriendly, and ethical gifts). Don’t sleep on the town’s most iconic activities: The Olde Mistick Village is fun for the family, especially the year-round Sofia’s Mystical Christmas shop and Deviant Donuts. Nearby Mystic Aquarium is a standout with beluga whales, sharks, African penguins, seals, sea lions, and more—though we imagine we had you at beluga whales.

Where to stay in Mystic The Whaler’s Inn has more than 150 years of heritage—one building was the residence of a shipbuilding family in the 1800s, another was an upscale hotel that opened in 1861. Following an elegant renovation in 2018, the present-day Whaler’s Inn feels like a de facto gathering spot for visitors—centrally located in downtown Mystic, with a wraparound porch and big picture windows overlooking the river. It also has family-friendly rooms, including a suite with bunk beds for the kids.

9. Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

• Distance : 1.5 hours by train from Penn Station
• Best for : Culture, history, and food in a smaller city

It may not seem like much of a “getaway” to travel from one urban destination to another, but the City of Brotherly Love offers plenty of perks for culture-seeking New Yorkers looking to spend a few days in a slightly smaller city.

What to do in Philadelphia

Philly is an exciting food city, offering dishes well beyond the beloved cheesesteak (although plenty of iconic establishments serve the namesake dish). Sample fine foods in the Reading Terminal Market , where stalls sling everything from cured meats to fresh cheeses and mouth-watering desserts. Or book a table at top-rated Philly restaurants such as Laurel in East Passyunk or Zahav in Society Hill.

For history lovers, there’s no end to the landmarks and significant buildings on offer in Philly, such as the iconic Liberty Bell with its infamous crack or Independence Hall , where the Declaration of Independence and the U.S. Constitution were both signed in the late 1700s. Museum enthusiasts should definitely plan to visit the Philadelphia Museum of Art , but the jewel in Philly’s cultural crown is undoubtedly its vibrant street art scene. Don’t leave the city without taking a Mural Arts Philadelphia tour to view buildings that have been transformed by imaginative murals.

Day Trip from New York to Washington D.C.

The American capital Washington D.C. is a good four hours’ drive from New York City. This guided bus tour starts at the Gray Line Visitors Center in Manhattan and the bus will take you south through the states of New Jersey, Delaware and Maryland until you reach Capitol Hill. With so many things to learn and see this is one of the most interesting day trips you can take from NYC.

Another worthwhile place to visit that’s close to NYC is Philadelphia. At just an hour and a half by train, it’s close enough that many Philadelphians commute to New York City for work daily. Though they are close, these two cities couldn’t have different ambiances; where New York is mainly made from concrete and is a large city, Philly has more green spaces and gives more of a small-town vibe.  

The main draw to this city is its importance in American history, which is evident in many areas of the city – especially the Old City district, which is a small section of the downtown area. Yet, Philadelphia is also home to more than historical landmarks, as you’ll also find exceptional art museums, Chinatown, a primarily Italian neighborhood in South Philly, and lots of gray skyscrapers mixed with industrial warehouses in the downtown section.

Located just over 20 miles from Manhattan, you’ll find Rockaway Beach tucked away in Queens. Though it’s known as Rockaway Beach, this destination encompasses several beaches between 3rd Street and 153rd Street. New York City offers endless things to do for travelers, but it's also a good home base for exploring other spots along the Eastern Seaboard. Whether you're looking for a quaint small town, a fall foliage tour or a relaxing day at the beach, you'll find a variety of options within a few hours of the city. U.S. News considered activities, transportation options and distance to come up with the best day trips from NYC. Do you have a favorite destination? Vote below to help decide next year's list. Philadelphia

The catskills, the berkshires, the hamptons, sleepy hollow, fire island, atlantic city.

Located roughly 100 miles southwest of NYC, the nation's first capital city is rife with activities for all types of travelers. Culture hounds can wander the Philadelphia Museum of Art, history buffs can sightsee at Independence Hall and the Liberty Bell Center and everyone will enjoy the city's dynamic food scene . If you have enough energy leftover after a day of exploring, recreate an iconic moment in movie history by running up the famous "Rocky Steps" before taking a tour of the Eastern State Penitentiary. Philly can easily be reached by bus, train or car.

This mountain region in southern New York state, about 140 miles north of New York City is perfect for exploring the great outdoors year-round. During the warmer months, travelers can camp, hike and fish around the various towns and lakes, while autumn is perfect for taking scenic drives to admire the fall foliage and covered bridges. Come winter, this vacation spot is a convenient option for skiing and snowboarding. The region is also home to a number of historic sites, including Bethel Woods Center for the Arts, a cultural center and history museum located on the site of the famous 1969 Woodstock festival.

If you're seeking an escape from the constant commotion of the Big Apple, this region in western Massachusetts may be just what the doctor ordered. City dwellers flock to charming small towns like Great Barrington and Lenox for festivals in the summer, and the beautiful mountain scenery comes alive with color come autumn. The region also boasts renowned luxury spas for more focused relaxation. Keep in mind that while some spots in the Berkshires can be reached by bus and train (this mountain region is located roughly 145 miles northeast of NYC), rideshare options are limited in the area, so a car is recommended.

Roughly 95 miles northeast of Manhattan on Long Island, the Hamptons make for an easy day trip. Though it's a chosen summer vacation spot for the rich and famous, budget travelers can enjoy a getaway without breaking the bank. The beaches are the main draw, but along the dunes you'll find boutiques for window-shopping and seafood restaurants that range from locally owned shacks to high-end establishments. Travelers can also get here via the Long Island Rail Road or the Jitney to save some coin.

Journey about 30 miles north of New York City and you'll find Sleepy Hollow, a quiet town set amidst the lush Hudson Valley. Fans of Washington Irving's 1820 story, "The Legend of Sleepy Hollow," will want to snap a photo with the Headless Horseman statue and explore the Sleepy Hollow Cemetery on a lantern tour. The town is also home to the historic Kykuit estate, which housed four generations of the Rockefeller family. In nearby Tarrytown, you'll find sights such as the grand Lyndhurst Mansion and the riverfront Pierson Park.

A drive of about 160 miles down the Garden State Parkway will land you in this delightful Jersey Shore town. You can spend the day lounging on the clean beaches (surfing is popular at the Cove and travelers flock to Sunset Beach for – you guessed it – its magnificent sunsets) or meandering through the National Historic Landmark District to see the grand, colorful Victorian homes (Emlen Physick Estate is a can't-miss). Other must-do activities include shopping at the many boutiques lining Washington Street Mall and getting spooked on a ghost tour.

About 180 miles northeast of NYC, Providence, Rhode Island, is a slightly farther trip, but it can be reached by car, bus or train. This city offers a walkable downtown and a mix of historic and cultural attractions, including the Lippitt House Museum and the breathtaking WaterFire art installation, which consists of more than 80 bonfires set along Providence's three rivers. Keep in mind that WaterFire lightings are offered on select weekends seasonally. You could also spend a full day exploring the RISD Museum, but set aside time to admire the Colonial homes along Benefit Street before dining on Italian cuisine in Federal Hill.

This seaport village at the mouth of the Mystic River has been around since the 17th century. Today, it's home to two of Connecticut's most-visited sights: The Mystic Seaport Museum and the Mystic Aquarium. Take your time browsing the exhibits at these must-see attractions, then head to the Colonial-style Olde Mistick Village for some souvenir shopping. Meanwhile, those who want to take advantage of Mystic's prime waterfront location can kayak, paddleboard or sail along the scenic Mystic River. After a day of sightseeing, head to Mystic Pizza, the restaurant that inspired the 1988 movie starring Julia Roberts, before driving the 135 miles back to NYC.

Sitting about 60 miles east of the heart of New York City, this barrier island is an ideal summertime retreat. Known for its welcoming atmosphere and rich LGBTQ history, Fire Island was a safe haven for gay travelers long before New York's Stonewall Riots of 1969. You can easily spend the day lounging along the beach at Robert Moses State Park or Fire Island National Seashore; the latter features the unique Sunken Forest, a rare maritime holly forest set behind rolling dunes. Once the sun sets, head to Ocean Beach or Cherry Grove to experience the island's thriving nightlife, which includes numerous drag venues.

The famous Atlantic City boardwalk is only about 130 miles south of NYC, meaning it’s possible to enjoy a day at the beach without having to spend the night. If you do want to make a weekend out of it, though, you’ll have plenty of hotels to choose from, as well as restaurants, spas and tax-free shopping. But this New Jersey locale's greatest asset is without a doubt its many casinos – test your luck at a slot machine or show off your bluffing skills at the poker table.

Amtrak NYC to DC: Why Taking the Train is the Best Way to Go

U nlock the advantages of traveling by train from the bustling Big Apple to the nation’s capital Washington DC with Amtrak. Say goodbye to airport security lines and traffic congestion as you embark on a relaxing journey from New York’s new Moynihan Train Hall.

With frequent departures, a generous baggage policy and the ability to move around during the under four-hour trip, Amtrak offers flexibility and convenience. Sit back and enjoy the ever-changing scenery while enjoying the onboard amenities that make your trip comfortable and enjoyable.

Amtrak Advantages: Travel Time

Anyone who has ever tried to drive out of New York City on a summer weekend, holiday or random gridlock alert day knows that the soul-crushing traffic can put a damper on the trip.

A journey from New York City to Washington DC by car can take anywhere from four to seven hours.

There are two Amtrak options:

• Amtrak Acela  takes 2 hours and 46 (to 54) minutes. It stops at Newark Penn Station; Metropark, NJ; Philadelphia, Wilmington and Baltimore Penn Station, and the train can speed along at 150 miles an hour in some spots.
• Northeast Regional  takes three hours and 20-40 minutes. It makes all of the stops the Acela makes, plus stops at the Newark and Baltimore airports, and it travels at slower speeds.

You can save almost an hour on the high-speed train, and up to four hours of hair-tearing hysteria by taking the train rather than your car.

Plus, the Acela has a First Class option, with free meals and drinks served to you at your seat. Philadelphia celebrity chef Stephen Starr curated the menu. The food in the Acela cafe car also has more interesting options than the cafe car on the Northeast Regional.

Price: Amtrak vs Car

On a recent summer weekend, we paid about $40 for our roundtrip Amtrak tickets, bought well in advance. Had we waited to buy our tickets at the last minute, or planned to travel during the holidays, it would have been far more expensive.

When we realized we could take a morning train, getting us into Washington DC much earlier in the day than our ticketed departure, we learned that we would have to pay the difference in price. The morning train would have cost us more than five times the price we originally paid.

Driving to DC, the tolls can be $40, depending on route. And the gas? Let’s say you have a car that gets 25 miles per gallon. Gas will cost about $30 for the trip.

This is, of course, just one way, so you’ll spend another $70 to get back to NYC from Washington DC. But if 2 of you are in the car, the price per person drops. And three or four along for the ride? Even less.

But you have to weigh your sanity versus potential road rage. You do you.

Comfort in Coach

This is not your average airplace seat! Even in coach class on the slower Northeast Regional trains, there is plenty of legroom. You can put your bags up above, or in luggage areas at the end of cars.

Business class seats have the advantage of being assigned, so you don’t have to worry about dragging your suitcases through the train, looking for an available seat.

There is something weird with Amtrak train seats: If you have an aisle seat and don’t know the person sitting next to you, you have to run a cord across their seat to reach the power outlets.

And the free wifi isn’t really strong enough to do work on the train.

Quiet Car vs Other Seats on Amtrak Train

Now that my children are out of the house, I am a fan of the quiet car on Amtrak. Phone calls aren’t allowed and you have to use headphones if you use electronic devices, with the volume turned low.

But don’t take the quiet car with young children. Although you are allowed to talk in the quiet car, no one appreciates a loud child here. We once took this car because there were no other seats on the train. We were glared at until Philadelphia, when we escaped to the boisterous regular car.

Amtrak Pet and Baggage Policies

If you are bringing a dog, you might have to drive. Amtrak charges $26 for a dog, and it has to weigh under 20 pounds. My Labrador Retriever has plumped up to 70 pounds, so she is banned from the train, even though she works as a comfort dog. [Therapy dogs of any size are allowed].

Driving can also be the perfect option if you are schlepping a lot of stuff. Amtrak allows you to bring two pieces of luggage, and charges for oversized items like bicycles. On the Northeast Corridor, it costs $20 to bring a bicycle.

Though when I brought my daughter a folding bike, I didn’t have to pay extra.

Moynihan Train Hall, New York City

One of the best things about taking Amtrak anywhere from NYC is the new Moynihan Train Hall.

This glorious transformation of the historic Farley Post Office has transformed the former Amtrak area in Penn Station, which is across the street, to one of beauty and wonder.  You also have access to great food.

If you take the subway to Moynihan Train Hall, the walk from the filth of the MTA to the shiny new Amtrak station is like the change from black and white to color in the Wizard of Oz . Light streams in from above, brass gleams and the air is – or at least seems – fresher.

Moynihan Food Hall

The centerpiece of Moynihan Food Hall, the Bar at Moynihan, has lots of local craft beer on tap and classic cocktails. Sit at the wood bar while you wait for an evening train.

The food hall has easy to eat or carry out food, like sushi, chopped salad, pizza and burgers. Alidoro makes Italian sandwiches that travel well and Naya has Mediterranean inspired bowls, wraps and salads. A ramen shop is coming, but ramen is best slurped up before the train.

If you are visiting someone – say, your daughter – in Washington DC, and you’ve forgotten to bring her bagels, you can pick some up at H & H, along with a few cupcakes at Magnolia or chocolates at Maison du Chocolat.

Exclusive Access: Metropolitan Lounge

If you have treated yourself to an Acela train ticket, or you have elite Amtrak status, you get access to Metropolitan Lounge. Business class passengers can also buy a day pass to the lounge.

This expansive sanctuary has lots of clean, comfortable places to sit, and free (non-alcoholic) drinks and food. There is also a bar, but you have to pay for drinks.

Even if you don’t have access to the Metropolitan Lounge, The Amtrak waiting area at Moynihan, for ticketed passengers only, has very clean bathrooms and power outlets at every seat.

Getting to Your Amtrak Train

One issue the fabulous Moynihan Train Hall hasn’t addressed is the chaos that ensues when a train track is announced. There is only one escalator to the track and it’s a bloodsport to get on the line before it resembles a Black Friday queue.

But there are 2 semi-secret ways to avoid the line.

• When the train is announced, go to the elevator and take it to the track. Very few people do this.
• Passengers in the Metropolitan Lounge get an early announcement of the track number and can take the elevator before the line even forms.

Union Station Washington DC

When you walk into Union Station in Washington DC, you are in a beautiful historic train station. Unfortunately, the Amtrak area, while not as grim as Penn Station in Manhattan was, is still pretty dismal.

There is an Acela Lounge at Union Station. For ‘regular’ passengers, there is a dim seating area and the usual scrum when the track is announced. One advantage here over Moynihan Train Hall is that the trains are on the same level as the waiting area. No crowded escalators, stairs or elevators to navigate.

Picking a Train

Some trains originate in NYC, which means finding a seat on the train going to DC is pretty easy. It also means that the train is cleaner. If the Amtrak is coming from Boston, people might be getting off in NYC. But they are not taking their garbage with them and no one is cleaning the train.

On our recent Amtrak ride, someone did come around collecting trash, but the guy next to me left a mess in his seat and no one addressed that.

And don’t even get me started on the bathrooms. I can’t imagine what the bathrooms look like on the trains going all the way to Miami or Chicago.

Before Going to DC, Ask Yourself…

A lot of considerations go into a trip from New York City to Washington DC.

A: Go mid-March to mid-April

Q: Do you want to take long walks around the National Mall?

A: Go late September to November or March to May

Q: Do you want to avoid tourists?

A: Don’t go to Washington DC

What to Do in Washington DC

Tour the us capitol.

The  US Capitol visitors center has an interactive gallery. There are also tours of the Capitol building, including the Crypt, the Rotunda and National Statuary Hall. Tours and exhibits are all free.

The rest of the National Mall includes the Lincoln Memorial and the Washington Monument,  the White House and Smithsonian museums. Again, everything is free.

Stop and See the Flowers

See the green side of Washington DC at Tregaron Conservancy. It has walking trails, gardens, fields, meadows and a lily pond. The conservancy, between the Woodley Park and Cleveland Park, is free. You can also see the free  National Zoo, near the conservancy

NBC Select Travel Awards 2024: The best duffels, backpacks and weekenders

At NBC Select, we spend hours researching and testing products so you can be more selective with your purchases. For our first-ever NBC Select Travel Awards, we spent months thoroughly testing numerous products covering a variety of travel categories.

We flew across the globe to Japan and Paris with suitcases , took train rides around New York City with weekenders and duffels in tow and packed bags full of packing cubes , toiletry bags and noise-canceling headphones to road trip across the East Coast. After all that testing, our editors sat down to choose products deserving of NBC Select’s stamp of approval.

How we picked the best travel bags .

The backpack, the weekender and the duffel are all bags that need to serve multiple functions while on a trip. We fill them with whatever we can’t fit in our suitcases, throw our essentials inside them for overnight getaways and use them to carry our laptops and water bottles on planes, trains, and automobiles. They are versatile and multipurpose, making it useful to keep at least one at home when traveling. Here’s how we evaluated travel bags to find NBC Select’s 2024 Travel Award winners.

• Zippers, handles and straps : To ensure zippers glide smoothly and don’t get stuck at any point, we opened and closed each bag numerous times when it was empty and full. We also considered how strong the bags’ handles and straps were, including how they felt when we held or wore them on our bodies.
• Structure and organization : We assessed how each bag’s structure impacted our ability to pack it easily — for example, whether it stayed open while we added clothing or flopped over and whether it was too stiff to overstuff or just flexible enough. We counted how many outfits (and, if applicable, how many pairs of shoes) fit inside the bags, plus what type of organizational features they offer, including built-in dividers, pockets, and pouches.
• Comfortability : After filling our bags to the brim, we ensured they felt comfortable carrying for long and short periods. We carried them as the brand intended: on our backs or over our shoulders.
• Durability : We noted the material each bag is made from and how well it withstands being tossed around during travel. We also considered water resistance.

The best duffel bags

With its spacious main compartment, exterior and interior pockets, exterior shoe compartment and trolley sleeve, this bag makes for the perfect travel and daily duffel. “I love that I can use this bag for trips as well as in my everyday life as a gym bag. I didn’t find that with the other duffels I tested, so I appreciated this,” says Zoe Malin , NBC Select associate updates editor. “The size of this bag and how lightweight it is makes it a perfect workout bag for me. I put my sneakers, a change of clothes, weights, a towel, toiletries and a water bottle inside it to go to yoga after work.”

The soft and puffy polyester bag is also durable, easy to clean and water-resistant. “I had to walk to the train in the rain with this bag and everything inside was totally dry,” says Malin. “I just wiped water off the bag in the bathroom of the train station with paper towels.”

On the inside, this spacious bag has interior pockets that are similar to a carry-on suitcase. It also closes and opens easily since the zippers glide easily, says Mili Godio , NBC Select updates editor. “The only thing I wish is that it had more pockets, especially for smaller items like my wallet and keys, but the ones it does have are super spacious.”

Planning on traveling for the Fourth of July holiday? Here’s how to avoid the rush

NEW YORK (AP) — The Fourth of July is right around the corner, and the travel rush is already heating up.

Millions of Americans are preparing to get out of town sometime in the coming holiday week. That will likely mean busy roads, as well as packed airports and train stations.

Motor club AAA projects that some 70.9 million travelers will head 50 miles (80 kilometers) or more from their homes over a nine-day Independence Day travel period — surpassing pre-pandemic numbers for the U.S. holiday. And the Transportation Security Administration expects to screen over 32 million individuals in airports from this Thursday through July 8, up 5.4% from last year’s numbers.

Are you traveling for the Fourth? Here’s a rundown of what you need to know.

When is the best time to hit the road for July Fourth?

Smooth sailing for travel around any holiday is never a given. But avoiding the most hectic times, when others are rushing out of town, is a good way to start.

If you’re traveling by car for the Fourth of July, it’s best to hit the road in the morning, according to transportation data and insights provider INRIX. Peak traffic congestion varies by location, INRIX data published by AAA shows, but the worst times to drive on, or leading up to, the holiday are generally between 2 p.m. and 7 p.m. Either way, be prepared for the roads to be jammed.

“Road trips over the holiday week could take up to 67% longer than normal,” Bob Pishue, transportation analyst at INRIX, said in a prepared statement.

July Fourth falls on a Thursday this year, and many travelers will likely take Friday July 5th off to extend their trip into a four-day weekend. Drivers in large metro areas can expect the biggest delays on Wednesday July 3 and Sunday July 7 — as travelers leave and return to town, Pishue added.

And if you’re renting a car ahead of July Fourth, the busiest pickup days will be Friday, Saturday and Wednesday before the holiday, AAA notes.

When will airports be busiest?

Airports will also likely be packed all week long — but the TSA expects most people will take to the skies on Friday.

It anticipates that it will screen more than 3 million individuals Friday. That would surpass the agency’s current record for most people screened on a single day, which reached just under 3 million last Sunday.

“We expect this summer to be our busiest ever,” TSA Administrator David Pekoske said, adding that travel typical peaks around Independence Day.

Last year, the busiest day for Fourth of July air travel was also the Friday ahead of the holiday, TSA data shows. If past trends hold, travel will likely be higher on the days before and after the Fourth — particularly closer to the weekend. In 2023, for example, more than 2 million people were screened on the Fourth, which landed on a Tuesday last year, down from 2.88 million the Friday before.

What should I do if my flight is delayed or canceled?

Flights can be delayed or canceled for an array of reasons — from plane-specific mechanical problems to major storms impacting popular travel paths.

If your flight is canceled, airlines are required to provide refunds for customers, even if the cancellation is due to weather . Delays are trickier, because they typically have to meet certain criteria for relief, such as refunds or compensation — but carriers will often give customers to chance to switch to alternative flights, if available, at no cost.

In April, the Biden administration issued final rules that include requiring airlines to provide automatic cash refunds within a few days for canceled flights and “significant” delays. Those rules are set to take effect over the next two years, but the Department of Transportation has a site that lets consumers see the commitments each airline has made for refunds and covering other expenses when flights are canceled or significantly delayed.

Always check your itinerary before leaving home

It’s better to be stuck at home than locked in hourslong traffic or stranded in an airport terminal. Before heading out the door this holiday week, do yourself a favor and check the status of your travel plans.

Was your flight, train or bus ride delayed? Are there are traffic incidents set to disrupt your drive? And what about the weather? A quick look through your itinerary — such as trip updates on a carrier’s website — checking weather forecasts and monitoring traffic safety through services like the 511 hotline or your phone’s navigation apps can go a long way toward avoiding travel misery.

Here are a few more tips to keep in mind:

— Leave early: There are more people everywhere during a holiday week, so lines will be longer and roads will be busier. Give yourself more time to get to your destination or to make your way through airport security.

— Keep an eye on the weather — and not just for your destination: Look at the weather for your entire travel path. Even if it’s sunny skies both at home and the place you’re headed, it’s important to keep an eye out for any storms in between. You may need to do some rerouting.

— Be kind: A trip delay or cancellation can be really frustrating — but if you’re running into disruptions, chances are others are too. Customer service agents have a lot on their plate at this time of year, and it’s important to be patient and respectful as they try to help you.

These Are the Best (and Worst) States for LGBTQ+ Americans to Live

A new report concluded that LGBTQ+ equality continues to decrease across the nation.

The number of non-heterosexual Americans has doubled in a decade, increasing to over seven percent in 2022 . However, the  LGBTQ+ community faces more challenges than ever before, with equality decreasing across the nation, according to a new report by Out Leadership, a global LGBTQ+ business platform. For the past six years, the organization has published an annual State LGBTQ+ Business Climate Index, measuring each state's record on gay rights and equality.

"With a rapidly changing cultural climate and a political landscape poised to undo two decades of progress toward LGBTQ+ equality, this year's Climate Index provides essential insight into the state of LGBTQ+ equality in the United States," this year's report states, noting that for the second year in a row, the average score of all 50 states has dropped indicating a decrease in LGBTQ+ equality in the country. The main reason for the negative change is the adoption of anti-trans policies by over 20 states.

Another trend the report highlights is the deepening polarization across the nation "as states that excel in LGBTQ+ equality continue to thrive and states that demonstrate hostility to LGBTQ+ rights continue to jeopardize the LGBTQ+ community's ability to live and work," Out Leadership concluded.

So, which states support LGBTQ+ equality the most? New York scored 93.67 out of 100, the highest on the list, followed by Connecticut (93.27), Massachusetts (92), and New Jersey (90). In the regional rankings, Illinois took the lead in the Midwest, Virginia was the winner in the Southeast, Colorado in the West, and New Mexico in the Southwest.

Overall, 16 states increased their scores since last year, with Michigan, Georgia, and Oregon having the most significant upward movement. The report notes that the Great Lakes State, which had an impressive 4.87 increase, implemented a statewide ban on conversion therapy, protecting its LGBTQ+ population.

However, according to The American Civil Liberties Union, hundreds of anti-gay policies and regulations have been introduced in 40 states since the beginning of this year alone. 

For the second year in a row, Arkansas had the lowest score of all 50 states (27 out of 100), five percentage points lower than its 2023 score and the lowest score ever received by a state in the six years since Out Leadership started publishing its Index. Louisiana (31.50) and South Carolina (31.90) are in the top three worst states for LGBTQ+ equality.

The Index features five categories, Legal and Nondiscrimination Protections, Youth and Family Support, Political and Religious Attitudes, Health Access and Safety, and Work Environment and Employment, and each accounts for 20 percent of the overall score.

In Germany, a Tournament Runs Smoothly, but the Trains Do Not

Sweltering train cars, frequent delays and regular cancellations: At the Euro 2024 men’s soccer tournament, Germany’s faltering rail system emerges as a tough opponent.

Rory Smith spent 14 hours on German trains in Munich, Cologne and Hamburg. Some of them were on time. Melissa Eddy recently returned to Berlin by train with a 90-minute delay.

Niclas Füllkrug arrived early at the Adidas campus just outside Herzogenaurach, a picture-postcard town in Bavaria that was to host the German national team before this summer’s European soccer championships. The staff had been told that players would start arriving on a Monday morning, a few days before their opening game. But Füllkrug, one of the team’s forwards, turned up on Sunday night.

He had decided to make the 300-mile journey from his home in Hanover by high-speed train on Germany’s national railway carrier, Deutsche Bahn. The company was not just one of the tournament’s sponsors; it was also supposed to be a standard-bearer of the event’s ecological credentials.

But years of failure to invest in rolling stock, upgrade railways and digitalize signal boxes have made Deutsche Bahn notorious for delays and cancellations. In a country that has long prided itself on its efficiency and punctuality, Germans — as well as fans — had been warning for months that the problems might mar the tournament.

So Füllkrug was hardly surprised when he found himself crammed into a train car packed with high school students on a class trip. He spent the journey fielding their questions about life with the national team.

By the time he made it to Herzogenaurach, he had been traveling for several hours longer than expected, hardly ideal preparation for an elite athlete on the eve of a major tournament. Still, the delays had at least vindicated his decision to build in extra time. In Germany, as Füllkrug said, it pays to “ have a bit of respect for Deutsche Bahn .”

Many of the hundreds of thousands of fans from across Europe — as well as a remarkable number from the United States — who have joined him in Germany will, after an often fraught opening week, doubtless understand what he means.

Deutsche Bahn had been a centerpiece of Germany’s plans for the tournament. The company offered discounted prices on “climate-friendly train travel,” part of what organizers boasted would be the “most sustainable” edition of the European Championship. When the draw for the tournament was made in December, the stage decorations included miniature versions of Deutsche Bahn’s long-distance, high-speed trains.

Yet as fans have flooded into Germany to follow their teams, the country’s rail networks have creaked. Even before the tournament started on June 14, staff members from the Munich transport authority had been dispatched to hand out ice pops to overheated travelers stuck for hours on stalled trains around the city.

In Gelsenkirchen, an industrial city in the Ruhr valley, some England fans worried about missing their team’s kickoff decided to make the three-mile walk to the city’s stadium after trams ground to a halt. In Stuttgart, Hungarian fans arriving at the city’s main train station for a game on Thursday found that, thanks to a major renovation project — begun in 2010 — it had been replaced by a giant hole.

Instead of arriving via a vast hall, alighting passengers have instead been shunted through huge wooden tunnels that snake toward the city. “I’m here to orient them,” said a representative from the Hungarian consulate, who was among the dozen or so officials dispatched to orient arriving passengers but not willing to have their names attached to the effort.

Despite their best efforts, some fans found the tunnels so long and disorientating that, even when they had nearly navigated them, they turned back and retraced their steps in hopes of getting out of the train station faster. (Deutsche Bahn recently announced that completion of the project in Stuttgart had been delayed, again, until December 2026.)

In Hamburg, Cologne and Düsseldorf, local transportation has held up a little better: After Hungary’s game against Switzerland in Cologne on June 15, trams were lined up outside the stadium to clear the backlog as quickly as possible.

Long-distance trains — offered to fans at a reduced rate — have been equally unpredictable. Germany’s rail network covers over 20,000 miles. But roughly half that length of track has been torn up in the past 70 years, leaving existing routes overloaded as demand for both cargo and passenger transportation has increased.

Late arrivals of one train have a knock-on effect for others, leading to widespread delays across the entire system. Only 63 percent of the system’s trains reached their destination on time last month, according to Deutsche Bahn. That compares with more than 94 percent punctuality in neighboring Austria and 87 percent in France.

The situation has been a cause of such acute embarrassment for Germany that Felix Dachsel, a columnist for Der Spiegel, one of the country’s biggest media outlets, felt the need last week to “ apologize in all 21 languages of the tournament ” for the state of the rail service. (He is taking it in good humor, at least: After all, he said, what could be more environmentally friendly than a train that did not run?)

“You can beat Germany,” he wrote, “but you will lose to Deutsche Bahn.”

Critics blame a lack of investment in the system in the decades since Deutsche Bahn was formed as a private company in 1994, fusing the state railways of the former East and West Germany. The German government is its sole shareholder.

“It has long been strategically clear that there is a lack of money,” said Andreas Knie, a professor at the Berlin Social Science Center whose research covers transit and technology. “The sums that should have been invested in the railroads, as a rule of thumb, should have been twice as high as what was actually invested.”

For a while, the system held. When Germany last hosted a major tournament, the 2006 men’s World Cup, Deutsche Bahn’s slick service was heralded as a key ingredient in the event’s success, helping to foster an enduring image of Germany as a smoothly running, thoroughly modern nation.

This time, plenty of fans — as well as Füllkrug — have learned to treat timetables as more of a guideline. That was no help for Austria fans trying to reach Düsseldorf last Monday to see their team kick off against France. Dozens were stranded just after crossing the border into Germany, with some not reaching the game until well into the second half .

Deutsche Bahn has said it will personally apologize to those left stranded. “We ask the fans to get in touch with us,” said Ralph Thieme, who is responsible for Deutsche Bahn stations that serve passengers. “We will find a good and fair way to compensate them.”

The problems have reached such proportions that, despite a government spending freeze , Germany has earmarked 40 billion euros, or $42.7 billion, to invest in its aging railway. Starting this year, work is set to begin on 40 key corridors.

Deutsche Bahn has already warned that it will mean dozens of construction sites on major routes, and with them, even more delays. Still, at least the fans do not need to worry. Work is not scheduled to begin until July 15 — the day after the final.
