best snorkeling tour in kauai

Kauai offers the oldest and most protected reef ecosystems of all the major Hawaiian Islands. Hundreds of species of fish can be found in these delicate "rain forests of the sea," one-third of which are found nowhere else in the world. Weather permitting, our Captains will take you down Na Pali Coast which offers some of the best snorkeling on the island and is accessible only by boat. Schools of vibrantly colored tropical fish mingle with the ancient Honu (Hawaiian green sea turtle) that graze on the limu (algae) growing on the coral reefs of these waters.

All Capt Andy's Kauai Snorkel Tours Include

  • Expert snorkel instructions for all levels including beginners.
  • Trained crew of professionals certified in CPR.
  • High quality, well maintained, snorkel gear.
  • Lunch and drinks

Beginning Snorkelers

Are you a 1st time snorkeler? Capt. Andy's is famous for our friendly and safe instructions. Snorkeling is not complicated. We'll have you exploring Kauai's tropical reefs in no time.

For those less confident swimmers, we provide snorkel vests which assist with floatation.

Snorkel Gear

Capt Andy's carries only the finest and most comfortable snorkel gear for your underwater adventures.

  • Soft silicone masks (corrective lenses too!)
  • "Dry" easy purge snorkels.
  • Comfortable fins in all sizes.
  • Snorkel vests - for buoyancy.
  • Non-fog spray

Kauai Snorkel Tips

Always use property fitting snorkel gear.

Proper fitting gear is one of the most important factors for an enjoyable snorkeling experience. One leaky mask or sore feet from tight fins can be frustrating. Our knowledgeable crew is here to help. We will fit you with proper size gear to ensure comfort and safety.

Use a Mask with Corrective Lenses

What good is snorkeling if you can't see the fish? Our soft silicone masks with corrective lenses are a perfect fit for people who wear glasses.

Safety First

If you are snorkeling without a tour, always check current ocean conditions before going out. Be informed of these important ocean safety tips:

  • When in doubt, don’t go out.
  • Always snorkel with a buddy.
  • Use a point of reference on shore and check periodically to make sure you have not drifted too far.
  • For beginners, going with an experienced snorkerler is recommended.

Who Can Snorkel?

Just about anyone can snorkel, as technique is more important than your fitness level. The fundamentals are easy to learn. Basic swimming skills are required, but snorkel vests can be used to assist in floatation. Depending on how adventurous you are, different levels of physical ability are required. If you have any doubts, consult your physician regarding any conditions that might be limiting for this activity.

What Do I Need To Bring?

Are there safety concerns.

If you are snorkeling with Capt. Andy's our Captains will ensure you snorkel in safe conditions, and trained professionals certified in CPR are onboard our boats.

Kauai Snorkeling FAQs

A couple of the best places to snorkel in Kauai include the Na Pali Coast (you’ll need to take a boat to get there), the reef near Ke’e Beach, Koloa Landing (although there isn’t a beach here), and plenty of Kauai snorkeling beaches.

Something really cool about Kauai is that it has about 50 miles of coastline that is white sand beach. That is perfect for shore access if you want to do beach snorkeling. Some of the best snorkeling beaches in Kauai include Tunnels Beach, Poipu Beach Park (for beginners), Lawai Beach, Ke’e Beach, Ha’ena Beach Park, and Hideaways Beach. The best snorkeling locations depend on the time of year. Kauai’s North Shore is perfect for snorkeling during the summer months, while the South Shore is the best snorkel location during the winter months.

The summer months, between May and September , are usually Kauai’s best snorkeling months since the weather is really warm and the waters are usually a lot calmer, meaning you will be able to see and explore more of the marine life!

There are many snorkeling tours Kauai offers that are very much worth it. Some of the best Kauai snorkeling tours offer all the gear and other awesome amenities. Plus, in the winter months, most tours also offer dolphin watching and whale watching to see some humpback whales too!

Although the Kauai boat snorkeling tours are incredible and worth it, Maui does usually offer the best snorkeling options in the entire world! Check out some great Maui snorkeling spots . However, all the Hawaiian islands offer amazing opportunities to snorkel and see all the incredible coral reefs and sea life you can imagine.

Go on a Snorkeling Adventure in Kauai

We stopped to snorkel at Nu’alolo Kai, with coral reefs to die for!

Ke’e Beach also has an extensive coral reef, and the water is clear and warm in summer, making for ideal snorkeling conditions. The water is shallow and under water visibility is good.

Extensive coral reef on the the right side of Kee Beach, one of the prettiest Kauai snorkeling beaches

Ke’e Beach is excellent for families with kids, with restrooms, showers and lifeguards.

Beginning snorkeler? You can start snorkeling in the lagoon protected by the reef.

Stronger swimmers and experienced snorkelers can head to the right side of the beach, with rocks jutting out from the shore – you can expect to see a lot more fish, coral and even a Hawaiian green sea turtle or two!

Colorful yellowtail coris wrasse on coral reefs

Winter is another story though, I wouldn’t recommend swimming or snorkeling at Ke’e Beach due to the typical high surf conditions.

Can you stay till late evening? You don’t want to miss the sunset on Ke’e Beach, typically one of the most colorful ones you’ll see on Kauai!

Colorful sunset over the tide pools at Ke'e Beach in Haena State Park

Since Ke’e Beach is in Haena State Park, home to the very popular Kalalau Trail, you will need to carefully plan your snorkeling trip, and make advance reservations.

Consult our detailed guide to visiting Haena State Park for planning.

2. Tunnels Beach (Makua Beach)

Tunnels Beach (Makua Beach) is a hidden gem, one of the best snorkeling locations in Kauai .

Fringing coral reefs on Tunnels Beach, one of the best Kauai snorkeling beaches on the North Shore

Tunnels Beach , another pretty North Shore Kauai Beach on the Maniniholo Bay, is just 5 miles west of Hanalei on the Kuhio Highway.

While you’ll see colorful tropical fish in every location mentioned here, Tunnels Beach has a unique coral reef with lava tubes, tunnels, underwater caves and other formations, making it an exciting spot to explore.

Snorkelers of different abilities can snorkel here, though beginners should restrict themselves to the safer inner reef.

I like Tunnels Beach because it has many different zones and habitats, from shallow lagoons to deep drop-offs.

If you’re a stronger swimmer, head to the left side of the beach where there are some rocks marking the entrance to the reef. You’ll find all kinds of tropical fish here, including jacks, arc-eye hawkfish, and Hawaiian monk seals.

Spotted boxfish on coral reefs

This beach is in a residential neighborhood, and has no facilities. Parking is also limited.

I recommend you park at the adjacent Haena Beach Park (not to be confused with Haena State Park), enjoy the amenities there, and then walk roughly half a mile northeast to Tunnels Beach.

Tunnels Beach is also a summer snorkeling destination like Ke’e Beach above, winter snorkeling is risky with dangerous surf conditions, rough waves, and strong currents.

Location: North Shore of Kauai, 5 miles west of Hanalei Lifeguard: No Beach Amenities: None Food Nearby: Head to Hanalei for food options Parking: Small lot, best option may be Haena Beach Park Directions: Look for “Tunnels” signs around mile marker 8, access road off Kuhio Highway

3. Anini Beach

Anini Beach is renowned for the longest, widest coral reef along the Kauai coastline. And with that comes almost unlimited snorkeling spots!

Extensive coral reef all along Anini Beach, one of the best Kauai snorkeling beaches on the North Shore

The fringing reef provides a natural barrier from waves and currents. You can expect a safe, protected area for snorkeling in calm and clear waters, though the depth varies from shallow (near the beach) to deep (further from the beach).

An ini Beach is one of the best family-friendly snorkeling beaches on Kauai’s North Shore , and unlike Ke’e Beach, doesn’t need a lot of advance planning and reservations.

You have a whole bunch of facilities: restrooms, showers, picnic tables, pavilions, shady trees, and even campsites (you need permits for overnight camping).

Beautiful sandy Anini Beach, one of the best family-friendly Kauai snorkeling beaches

But no lifeguards, so keep an eye on the kids!

Beginners and kids should stay within the inner reef, where you can see a variety of tropical fish and the occasional sea turtle.

Need a richer experience? If you are a strong swimmer and experienced snorkeler, you can venture to the outer reef where you may even see rays, eels, octopuses and reef sharks (the smaller kind!).

Endangered Hawaiian green sea turtle swimming in the coral reefs

But watch out for channels where the currents may be strong and unpredictable.

As with the other North Shore beaches, snorkeling in winter is dangerous here.

Location: North Shore of Kauai, near Hanalei Lifeguard: No Beach Amenities: Restrooms, showers, picnic tables, pavilions, shade trees Food Nearby: Head to Princeville or Kilauea for food options Parking: Road parking Directions: Anini Beach, Anini Road, Kilauea

4. Hideaways Beach (Pali Ke Kua Beach)

Hideaways Beach is precisely that, a beach tucked away and quite difficult to get to, one of the best Kauai snorkeling beaches for those seeking to get away from crowds.

best snorkeling tour in kauai

Hideaways Beach is more for the thrill seeker, the adventure tourist. You have to hike a steep trail (sometimes with the help of ropes), down the cliffs to the beach.

This is definitely a hard hike, especially when the trail is wet and slippery.

Hike down the cliffs to Hideaways Beach, one of the best secluded Kauai snorkeling beaches near Princeville

But the payoff is sweet for those who hike down: an almost picture-perfect, powdery golden sand beach, protected by a large reef, making the ocean waters great for snorkeling and swimming!

Snorkeling at Hideaways Beach is primarily for the experienced snorkeler and good swimmer. The water along the reef is a bit deep and rough.

Snorkeling at Hideaways Beach, one of the best snorkeling beaches in Kauai for experienced, adventurous snorkelers

Hideaways Beach has no facilities or lifeguards, and limited parking on Ka Haku Road near the trailhead.

I would strongly recommend against swimming or snorkeling on Hideaways Beach in winter (as with other Kauai North Shore beaches), when you typically have high surf conditions.

Location: North Shore of Kauai, Princeville Lifeguard: No Beach Amenities: None Food Nearby: Princeville has great food options Parking: At the trailhead, small parking lot or 1 Hotel paid parking Directions: Ka Haku Road to Hideaways Beach Parking or 1 Hotel

5. lydgate beach park.

Visiting Kauai in winter and looking to snorkel? You probably know by now that Kauai North Shore beaches are to be avoided, due to the rough waves and high surf conditions.

Luckily, Lydgate Beach Park is one of the few year-round snorkeling destinations along the East Side of Kauai , and one of the best family-friendly Kauai snorkeling beach spots!

Lydgate Beach Park, one of the most popular Kauai snorkeling beaches on the East Side, where you can snorkel safely year round

Lydgate Beach is one the best swimming beaches in Kauai , with the large ocean waves and currents protected by a lava rock wall.

Our kids loved the small pool that was behind a man-made rock wall, probably one of the safest swimming and snorkeling locations on Kauai !

Depths can vary from 3 feet to 8 feet depending on the tides, so we used flotation devices for our younger kids. There are handy ladders on the rock wall to enter the water.

Keiki pool or kids pool on the Lydgate Beach Park, one of the best Kauai snorkeling beaches for kids and beginners

I was pleasantly surprised at how many different species of tropical fish had sneaked in through the barriers, when I went in snorkeling with the kids in the smaller pool.

While the marine life and tropical fish is not as extensive as in some of the other locations, you can still expect to see hundreds of fish species here, including schools of yellow and black tang.

Best of all, there were several reasonably priced food trucks near the entrance to the park, serving delicious Hawaiian, Thai, Indian and other cuisines!

Location: East Shore of Kauai, 6 miles south of Kapa’a (next to Wailua River) Lifeguard: Yes Beach Amenities: Restrooms, showers, picnic tables, huge playground, bike path Food Nearby: Food trucks serving ethnic food, Coconut Marketplace nearby and many other options in Kapa’a Parking: Beach parking along Nalu Road Directions: Nalu Road off Kuhio Highway, Kapa’a

6. poipu beach.

Visiting Poipu Beach , one of the more popular Kauai beaches, is one of the best things to do in Kauai !

Two beautiful crescent-shaped bays, with a shallow sandbar separating them, along with golden, finely powdered sand, and calm, clear and warm waters year-round make Poipu Beach one of the best beaches on Kauai !

Spectacular Poipu Beach, one of the best Kauai snorkeling beaches for families with kids and beginners

You have a lifeguard, restrooms and showers, excellent beach facilities for families with kids. We used to take our kids to Poipu Beach all the time when we stayed in the nearby resort area, and they loved snorkeling here!

The bays are protected by a barrier reef, providing a safe snorkeling and swimming environment.

You can see hundreds of different kinds of colorful, tropical fish here, big and small!

We even saw a Hawaiian monk seal lazing in the sand, soaking in the sun! Keep your distance, though, they are endangered and protected.

The smaller bay is closer to the parking lot and playground, and being shallow, more suitable for kids and beginners.

The bigger bay is better for experienced snorkelers, and can be close to 12 feet deep in some areas (depending on the tide), with bigger fish and the occasional green sea turtle.

Food trucks serving poke bowls, tacos, burgers and curry are available nearby.

Location: South Shore of Kauai, Koloa Lifeguard: Yes Beach Amenities: Restrooms, showers, playground Food Nearby: Food trucks at the entrance Parking: Poipu Beach Park parking lot Directions: Poipu Beach Park, Koloa

7. Salt Pond Beach Park

Sa lt Pond Beach Park , well away from nearby towns, is a remote, secluded beach along the southwestern shore of Kauai.

Watching the sunset here is one of the best things to do near Poipu !

Salt Pond Beach Park, one of the best Kauai snorkeling beaches on the Southwestern side, with soft powdered sand and crystal clear waters

Salt Pond Beach is one of my favorite Kauai south shore beaches for snorkeling, and I frequent this beach when I just want to relax and have a quiet day with the family.

One of the primary attractions here are the salt ponds, built by the natives to make salt for cooking and medicine.

But Salt Pond Beach is an excellent snorkeling location as well, with a beautiful sandy beach and crescent-shaped bays protected by an underwater fringing reef.

Salt Pond Beach is broken into three main pools: a big one in the middle, deeper and meant for good swimmers, a right one called the baby or keiki pond for smaller kids, and a left one, popular for snorkeling.

Salt Pond Beach is a very popular haunt with the locals, and you can expect to see a large variety of tropical fish in its three pools.

Salt Pond Beach Park, one of the favorite Kauai snorkeling beaches of locals

In winter, you can often see pods of migrating humpback whales from Salt Pond Beach!

Location: Kauai’s Southwestern Shore, near Eleele, on the way to Waimea Canyon State Park Lifeguard: Yes Beach Amenities: Restrooms, showers, picnic tables, shaded huts Food Nearby: Food trucks or head to Hanapepe, nearest town, for food options Parking: Beach parking lot Directions: Salt Pond Road, Eleele (take Lele Road off Highway 50)

Snorkeling and Water Activities Gear Checklist

Though you can rent snorkeling gear or use the ones that come with tours, we invested in our own gear, mainly due to Covid-19 (why take the risk?).

  • Snorkeling Gear Set : We love our Cressi Light Weight Premium Travel Snorkel Set for All Family , compact and easy to pack, great fitting, and very clear underwater. The Zenoplige Mask Fins Snorkel Set is a great budget option.
  • Sunscreen : Hawaii’s sun can be harsh. Avoid sunburn with sunscreen compliant with Hawaii’s 104 Reef Act. The Sun Bum Original SPF 50 Sunscreen Spray , moisturizing with Vitamin E, is our go-to when we travel to Hawaii. Apply liberally and regularly!
  • Underwater Camera : Want to capture Hawaii’s incredible underwater seascape and marine life? Your best budget option is the Fujifilm QuickSnap Waterproof Disposable Camera , reasonably cheap with good underwater photos! If you want high-end photos and video, you must invest in the premium GoPro HERO12 – Waterproof Action Camera , (waterproof to 33 feet)!
  • Inflatable Life Jackets : If you’re planning paddle boarding, canoeing, kayaking and other water sports, and prefer your own life jacket, consider one of these two US Coast Guard approved options: the Onyx M-16 Series Belt Back Manual Inflatable Life Jacket or the Onyx A/M-24 Automatic/Manual Inflatable Life Jacket .
  • Water Shoes : Some of Hawaii’s beaches have sharp lava rocks or coral reefs, good water shoes will protect your feet (but please do not walk on the reef!). We use the Merrell Hydro Moc rubber shoes ( men’s , women’s ), great for slippery rocks. If you prefer sandals, we recommend the Keen Newport H2 Closed Toe Water Sandals ( men’s , women’s ).
  • Waterproof Waist Pack : Keep your rental car keys, cards, and phone dry and safe while you swim or snorkel with a dry bag. We love this 2-pack AiRun Tech Pouch with waist strap . The transparent one is touch-screen friendly!

Important Tips for Snorkeling in Kauai

You will need to rent snorkeling equipment from one of the bigger towns, most beaches won’t have rental stores nearby.

You will need a mask that fits well, a snorkel with a mouthpiece, and, optionally, feet fins, flotation devices and a wetsuit (or a rash guard).

You should restrict snorkeling on Kauai’s North Shore to summer, since during winter, the waves are rough, and you have high surf conditions. Check beach conditions here .

Lydgate Beach Park ponds at sunrise, clear calm waters early morning

Best time of day to snorkel is usually mornings, when the water is calm and clear, and underwater visibility is high. Beaches tend to be less crowded in the morning as well!

Pick a location appropriate for your snorkeling ability. If you are a beginner, prefer beaches with lifeguards where you can ask them for the best spots to snorkel.

Poipu Beach with lifeguards, one of the best Kauai snorkeling beaches offering locations for snorkelers of different abilities

If you are planning a snorkeling boat tour, make reservations early, since Kauai is a popular destination!

Wear reef-safe sunscreen, and use a rash guard or wetsuit to protect your skin from sunburn.

Don’t forget towels and a change of dry clothes!

Take a waterproof camera to capture some of the amazing marine life you will see underwater.

Make sure you have lots of water and snacks, many of the beaches have no food store or restaurants close by.

Finally, make sure you are respectful of the reef and marine life! Don’t step on or break corals. Don’t touch, feed or harass the marine life.

Preserve the coral reefs on Kauai snorkeling beaches!

Some of the species you may encounter like the Hawaiian green sea turtle and the Hawaiian monk seal are endangered and protected by laws requiring you to maintain a respectable distance!

Ocean Safety Tips

Hawaii’s beaches are beautiful, but ocean activities can be dangerous. Ocean conditions are dynamic and can change without warning.

Here are some tips to enjoy the ocean and beaches safely:

  • ALWAYS heed posted warning signs.
  • Check conditions just before you arrive at your chosen beach, and watch conditions at the beach for a bit before you decide to enter the water.
  • Swim at a lifeguarded beach and ask the lifeguard for advice before you enter the water.
  • Never turn your back on the ocean, whether you are standing at the shore or on a cliff above. If you see wet rocks or sand, it means the water has been here recently.
  • Know your limitations, especially if you are not an experienced swimmer. If in doubt, do not go out.
  • If you choose to enter the water, go with a partner or in a group.
  • Know that alcohol can impair judgment and motor skills in the water.
  • Keep children close and always keep your eyes on what they are doing in the water.
  • Watch for sharp coral or rocks or sea urchins.
  • Check advisories regarding water quality at various beaches here .

Your Guide to Vacationing in Kauai

Getting around in kauai, staying safe in kauai, communicating in kauai, what to pack when vacationing in kauai, interesting facts about kauai, get ready to have fun in kauai.

When planning any vacation, it is important to know the details about where you are going so that you are well-prepared. Figuring things out last minute, or when you actually arrive, can mean disaster for your trip and that’s the last thing you need. Here is some valuable information about Kauai that may make planning your vacation easier.

If you plan on seeing more of the island than just the immediate area around the resort you are staying at and a few select tours or attractions, you may want to plan on renting a vehicle. However, if your hotel or resort is centrally located around an area with a lot of the attractions you wish to visit, you will probably want to save the money on the rental car and just use a taxi or even rent a scooter or other cheaper methods of travel.

Kauai has relatively low crime rates and is generally considered a safe place to travel. However, as with any tourist destination, you always want to take precautions when traveling to protect yourself. It’s important not to show off flashy jewelry or expensive cameras. Always have your identification on you in case you are injured or sick and need to get medical help. And always keep your wits about you – don’t drink too much so you can keep your bearings at all times.

Because Kauai is an island, there are a lot of beaches to swim and many Na Pali boat tours. Don’t swim on secluded beaches unless you are familiar with the tides. When swimming at popular beaches, always be aware of lifeguards and obey their rules and instructions. When on Kauai snorkel tours, your captain and crew will brief you with safety instructions and it is important to follow these at all times.

English is the official language of Hawaii. However, Hawaii is home to many cultures and you will probably run into both locals and tourists that speak many other languages. Pidgin English is the local language of Kauai. You can also hear Chinese, Filipino, Japanese, and Portuguese. Native Hawaiians appreciate Hawaiian words and locations being pronounced correctly so if you don’t know how to say something, it is best to ask. A local guide can help you as well.

The atmosphere is very casual in Kauai. You can wear shorts even when dining at a restaurant but if you are wearing a swimsuit, be sure to wear a coverup or shirt over it. Many people wear slippers even to dine out at a restaurant as it is part of the customary “dress code” of the island; however, some places may require close toed shoes. If you are coming from one of the many Kauai snorkel tours, you will want to make sure you are covered up appropriately with an Aloha shirt or cover up as well as dry shorts and slippers or shoes.

The highest point on the Kauai island is Kawaikini Peak and the whole island is only 552 square miles. This makes it a relatively small island. Its state bird is the Nene and the “island color” is purple. The state flower that represents Kauai is the Mokihana which can be found abundantly in the tropical forests that cover most of the island.

Kauai is one of those places that must be seen and experienced to really appreciate. Its beauty is unique and cannot be surpassed except by other Hawaii locations which offer similar beauty but always different. You cannot see the stunning cliffs or unique tropical forests unique to this island anywhere else.

So, pack your bags and get ready to enjoy a whole new world at your resort, on beautiful beaches, and of course, on your Kauai snorkel tours!

Lydgate Beach Park and Poipu Beach stand out as two of the top Kauai snorkeling beaches tailor-made for beginners and families with kids. They come equipped with all the essentials and offer shallow, crystal-clear, and serene waters, creating the perfect setting for a delightful snorkeling experience.

Ke’e Beach and Anini Beach also make the cut, but it’s advisable to save them for the summer months when the water conditions are more favorable for snorkeling . Keep in mind that Ke’e Beach requires advance reservations and some thoughtful planning for a seamless underwater adventure.

Which Kauai snorkeling beaches are less crowded?

Kauai snorkeling beaches are less crowded

Beautiful Poipu Beach , highlighted as one of the best Kauai snorkeling beaches for families with kids and beginners, is not just about fish – it’s an underwater world full of surprises.

If you’re looking for a more serene experience away from the crowds, consider Hideaways Beach (summer only) and Salt Pond Beach Park (all year round). These two are among the best secluded, less crowded Kauai snorkeling beaches . Keep in mind that Hideaways Beach is geared more towards the experienced snorkeler and involves a challenging hike down to reach the remote beach.

So, whether you’re seeking vibrant fish at popular spots or a more exclusive marine encounter, Kauai’s snorkeling beaches have something for everyone.

Best Kauai Snorkeling Tours for the Na Pali Coast

Looking for an unforgettable Kauai adventure but short on time? Combine two of the best things to do on the island: snorkel in Kauai’s vibrant coral reefs while soaking in breathtaking views of the stunning Na Pali coast !

The rugged Na Pali coast , adorned with secluded beaches, emerald-green lush valleys, and towering cliffs, is typically accessible only by boat (unless you’re up for an epic hike along the famed Kalalau Trail). Luckily, there are several tour options to choose from.

For an exhilarating and adventurous twist, consider zodiac raft tours . These can take you to hidden sea caves, coastal waterfalls, and remote beaches. Be prepared for a physically demanding but thrilling ride.

On our first Kauai trip, we opted for this raft adventure , the Na Pali 1/2 Day Snorkel tour , and it was fantastic. The nimble raft zigzagged along the stunning coast, exploring sea caves and chasing waterfalls.

We made a pitstop to snorkel at Nu’alolo Kai , home to coral reefs that are simply to die for!

Best Kauai Snorkeling Beaches on the North Shore

Kauai Snorkeling Beaches on the North Shore

1. Ke’e Beach (Haena State Park)

Ke’e Beach is hands down one of my favorite Kauai snorkeling beaches , especially during the summer – and it’s not just about snorkeling, it’s also the prettiest beach around!

Nestled in Haena State Park, Ke’e Beach offers more than just underwater wonders. You can seamlessly blend snorkeling with activities like hiking a part of the iconic Kalalau Trail along the breathtaking Na Pali coastline and exploring the restored taro fields. It’s a whole day of family fun!

This North Shore gem is a small, gorgeous spot adorned with coconut palm trees, treating you to stunning views of the Na Pali cliffs. The coral reef here is extensive, and the water is clear and warm during summer, creating the perfect conditions for snorkeling . Families with kids will love the added perks of restrooms, showers, and vigilant lifeguards.

For the beginners, start your snorkeling adventure in the lagoon protected by the reef. If you’re a strong swimmer or an experienced snorkeler, head to the right side of the beach where rocks jut out – you might encounter more fish, coral, and perhaps a Hawaiian green sea turtle or two!

Keep in mind, winter isn’t the best time for a dip at Ke’e Beach due to high surf conditions. And don’t miss the breathtaking sunset if you can stay till late evening!

Location: Haena State Park, North Shore of Kauai

Lifeguard: Yes

Beach Amenities: Restrooms, showers

Food Nearby: No shops or restaurants close by

Parking: Ke’e Beach Parking Lot, reservations needed, shuttle recommended

2. Tunnels Beach (Makua Beach)

Tunnels Beach, or Makua Beach, is a hidden gem among the best Kauai snorkeling beaches on the North Shore. Just 5 miles west of Hanalei on the Kuhio Highway, this beach is a tropical paradise waiting to be explored.

While you’ll encounter colorful tropical fish in every location mentioned, Tunnels Beach stands out with its unique coral reef featuring lava tubes, tunnels, underwater caves, and other fascinating formations – a true snorkeler’s playground.

Snorkelers of various skill levels can enjoy the experience, but beginners should stick to the safer inner reef. Tunnels Beach offers diverse zones and habitats, from shallow lagoons to deep drop-offs.

For a more adventurous swim, head to the left side where rocks mark the entrance to the reef. Here, you’ll discover an array of tropical fish, including jacks, arc-eye hawkfish, and perhaps even catch a glimpse of Hawaiian monk seals.

This beach is situated in a residential area and lacks facilities, including limited parking. It’s advisable to park at the nearby Haena Beach Park, savor its amenities, and take a half-mile stroll northeast to Tunnels Beach.

Similar to Ke’e Beach, Tunnels Beach is best for summer snorkeling, as winter brings risky conditions with dangerous surf, rough waves, and strong currents.

Location: North Shore of Kauai, 5 miles west of Hanalei

Lifeguard: No

Beach Amenities: None

Food Nearby: Head to Hanalei for food options

Parking: Small lot, best option may be Haena Beach Park

Directions: Look for “Tunnels” signs around mile marker 8, access road off Kuhio Highway

3. Anini Beach

Anini Beach boasts the longest, widest coral reef along Kauai’s coastline, making it one of the best Kauai snorkeling beaches on the North Shore. The fringing reef acts as a natural barrier, creating a safe haven for snorkeling in calm, clear waters with varying depths from shallow to deep.

This family-friendly destination provides an abundance of snorkeling spots, and you won’t need extensive planning and reservations like at Ke’e Beach. Anini Beach is equipped with various facilities, including restrooms, showers, picnic tables, pavilions, shady trees, and even campsites (permits required for overnight stays).

The extensive coral reef along Anini Beach offers a rich snorkeling experience for both beginners and experienced snorkelers. Beginners and kids can stick to the inner reef, where a variety of tropical fish and occasional sea turtles can be spotted.

For a more immersive adventure, strong swimmers and experienced snorkelers can explore the outer reef, where encounters with rays, eels, octopuses, and reef sharks (the smaller kind!) are possible. However, be cautious of channels where currents can be strong and unpredictable.

Anini Beach is a year-round snorkeling destination, providing a safe haven even during the winter months. Just keep in mind that, like the other North Shore beaches, winter snorkeling can be hazardous due to unpredictable conditions.

Location: North Shore of Kauai, near Hanalei

Beach Amenities: Restrooms, showers, picnic tables, pavilions, shade trees

Food Nearby: Head to Princeville or Kilauea for food options

Parking: Road parking

Directions: Anini Beach, Anini Road, Kilauea

4. Hideaways Beach (Pali Ke Kua Beach)

Hideaways Beach lives up to its name, tucked away and a bit of a challenge to reach, making it one of the best Kauai snorkeling beaches for those craving solitude and adventure.

This secluded gem is not for the faint-hearted – it’s a playground for thrill-seekers and adventure tourists. To access the beach, you’ll embark on a steep trail, sometimes aided by ropes, descending the cliffs. Be warned, it’s a tough trek, especially when the trail is wet and slippery.

But for those who brave the journey, the reward is worth it: an almost idyllic, powdery golden sand beach, sheltered by a sizable reef, creating ideal conditions for snorkeling and swimming in the ocean waters!

Snorkeling at Hideaways Beach caters to the experienced snorkeler and strong swimmer. The water along the reef tends to be a bit deep and rough, adding an extra layer of excitement.

Hideaways Beach doesn’t offer facilities or lifeguards, and parking is limited on Ka Haku Road near the trailhead. A word of caution – it’s not advisable to swim or snorkel here during winter (similar to other Kauai North Shore beaches) due to high surf conditions.

Location: North Shore of Kauai, Princeville

Food Nearby: Princeville has great food options

Parking: At the trailhead, small parking lot, or 1 Hotel paid parking

Directions: Ka Haku Road to Hideaways Beach Parking or 1 Hotel

Best Kauai Snorkeling Beaches on the East Coast

5. lydgate beach park.

 Lydgate Beach Park

Planning a winter visit to Kauai and eager to snorkel? By now, you’re likely aware that the North Shore beaches are off-limits due to rough waves and high surf conditions.

Enter Lydgate Beach Park – a shining exception, offering year-round snorkeling along the East Coast of Kauai and standing out as one of the best family-friendly Kauai snorkeling beaches !

Lydgate Beach , situated on the East Side, earns its reputation as one of the best swimming beaches in Kauai. Thanks to a protective lava rock wall, the large ocean waves and currents are tamed, creating a safe haven for water enthusiasts.

Our kids absolutely adored the small pool tucked behind a artificial rock wall – arguably one of the safest spots for swimming and snorkeling on Kauai!

Depths can vary from 3 to 8 feet depending on the tides, prompting us to use flotation devices for our younger kids. Convenient ladders on the rock wall make entering the water a breeze.

I was pleasantly surprised to discover a variety of tropical fish that had made their way into the barriers while snorkeling with the kids in the smaller pool. While the marine life might not be as extensive as some other spots, you can still anticipate encountering hundreds of fish species, including vibrant schools of yellow and black tang.

As a delightful bonus, there are several reasonably priced food trucks near the park entrance, offering delectable Hawaiian, Thai, Indian, and other cuisines!

Location: East Shore of Kauai, 6 miles south of Kapa’a (next to Wailua River)

Beach Amenities: Restrooms, showers, picnic tables, huge playground, bike path

Food Nearby: Food trucks serving ethnic food, Coconut Marketplace nearby, and many other options in Kapa’a

Parking: Beach parking along Nalu Road

Directions: Nalu Road off Kuhio Highway, Kapa’a

Best Kauai Snorkeling Beaches on the South Shore

Kauai Snorkeling Beaches

6. Poipu Beach

A visit to Poipu Beach, one of the most beloved Kauai beaches , is an absolute must-do in Kauai!

Picture two stunning crescent-shaped bays, separated by a shallow sandbar, adorned with golden, finely powdered sand, and offering calm, clear, and warm waters year-round – that’s Poipu Beach, ranking high among the best beaches on Kauai!

The spectacular Poipu Beach, a haven for families with kids and beginners in snorkeling

You’ll find a lifeguard, restrooms, and showers, providing excellent beach facilities for families with kids. During our stays in the nearby resort area, we frequented Poipu Beach with our kids, who absolutely loved the snorkeling experience here!

The bays benefit from the protection of a barrier reef, creating a safe haven for both snorkeling and swimming.

Prepare to be mesmerized by the sight of hundreds of colorful, tropical fish – both big and small!

On one occasion, we even spotted a Hawaiian monk seal leisurely basking in the sun on the sand! It’s important to keep a respectful distance, as these seals are endangered and protected.

Endangered Hawaiian monk seal on Poipu Beach, a highlight among the best Kauai snorkeling beaches

The smaller bay, conveniently located near the parking lot and playground, is shallow and more suitable for kids and beginners.

For experienced snorkelers, the bigger bay, reaching depths of close to 12 feet in certain areas (depending on the tide), offers encounters with larger fish and the occasional green sea turtle.

Don’t worry about packing a lunch – there are food trucks nearby serving a variety of delights from poke bowls and tacos to burgers and curry.

Location: South Shore of Kauai, Koloa

Beach Amenities: Restrooms, showers, playground

Food Nearby: Food trucks at the entrance

Parking: Poipu Beach Park parking lot

Directions: Poipu Beach Park, Koloa

7. Salt Pond Beach Park

 Salt Pond Beach Park

Salt Pond Beach Park

T he Salt Pond Beach Park , nestled along the southwestern shore of Kauai, far from the hustle of nearby towns, stands as a remote and secluded gem. Catching the sunset here is undeniably one of the best activities near Poipu!

Salt Pond Beach, adorned with soft powdered sand and crystal clear waters, is among the finest Kauai snorkeling beaches on the southwestern side. It’s a personal favorite of mine, a go-to spot when I crave a tranquil day with the family.

One of the unique draws is the salt ponds, crafted by the natives for salt production used in cooking and medicine.

Beyond its cultural significance, Salt Pond Beach is an exceptional snorkeling location , boasting a beautiful sandy beach and crescent-shaped bays sheltered by an underwater fringing reef.

The beach is divided into three main pools: a sizable central one, deeper and suitable for proficient swimmers; a right-side pool named the baby or keiki pond catering to smaller kids; and a left-side pool, renowned for its snorkeling opportunities.

A popular choice among locals, Salt Pond Beach offers a diverse array of tropical fish in its three pools.

During winter, lucky visitors may witness pods of migrating humpback whales from the shores of Salt Pond Beach !

Location: Kauai’s Southwestern Shore, near Eleele, on the way to Waimea Canyon State Park

Beach Amenities: Restrooms, showers, picnic tables, shaded huts

Food Nearby: Food trucks or head to Hanapepe, the nearest town, for food options

Parking: Beach parking lot

Directions: Salt Pond Road, Eleele (take Lele Road off Highway 50)

Important Tips for Snorkeling in Kauai

Important Tips for Snorkeling in Kauai

To make the most of your snorkeling adventure in Kauai, here are some essential tips:

1. Rent Equipment in Bigger Towns: Most beaches lack nearby rental stores, so plan to rent your snorkeling gear in larger towns.

2. Required Gear: Ensure you have a well-fitting mask, a snorkel with a mouthpiece, and optionally, fins, flotation devices, and a wetsuit or rash guard.

3. Timing Matters: Snorkel on Kauai’s North Shore in summer when the waves are calmer. Winter brings rough waves and high surf conditions.

4. Best Time of Day: Mornings are ideal for snorkeling – calm waters, clear visibility, and fewer crowds.

5. Choose Suitable Locations: Select beaches based on your snorkeling skill level. Lifeguarded beaches are excellent for beginners.

6. Early Reservations: If planning a snorkeling boat tour, book early due to Kauai’s popularity.

7. Sun Protection: Use reef-safe sunscreen and consider a rash guard or wetsuit to prevent sunburn.

8. Pack Essentials: Don’t forget towels, a change of clothes, a waterproof camera, water, and snacks. Many beaches lack nearby food options.

Kauai is beautiful. Both on the land and underwater. But finding a great place to snorkel in Kauai isn’t as easy as just pulling over on the side of the road and jumping in the water. There are currents to contend with and rocky beaches, which can make entering and exiting the water a challenge.

To help you find the best places to snorkel on Kauai, we rounded up these five top spots.

Kauai Snorkeling FAQs:

Does kauai have good snorkeling.

Kauai has great snorkeling and in a number of spots you’ll be able to see plenty of sea life without going too far from shore. While it’s not the best island for snorkeling, thanks to challenging ocean currents during the winter months, you can still find a number of great places to get in the water and enjoy the colorful fish.

Which Side of Kauai is best for snorkeling?

You can snorkel all over Kauai, but the best snorkeling spots are found on the north and south shore. Whether you’ll find better snorkeling on the north or south side of Kauai depends on the time of year. During the winter months, the best snorkeling on Kauai is on the south shore, where the most popular spots have calm water. During the summer months, the best snorkeling is found on Kauai’s north shore, when you’ll experience very few waves in the best snorkeling spots.

Can you swim with turtles on Kauai?

When you’re snorkeling on Kauai, you’ll likely see a turtle or two swimming along with you. If you want to increase your chances of seeing a sea turtle while you’re snorkeling, head to these spots:

  • Koloa Landing: You won’t find super clear water here, but you’ll find a number of resident turtles that hang out near the boat launch area.
  • Anini Beach: If you’re lucky, you’ll be able to spot turtles swimming close to shore here, even before you get into the water.
  • Poipu Beach: Near the rocky area that separates Poipu from Brennecke’s Beach, you’ll often find turtles eating.

While it can be exciting to swim with turtles, remember that you will need to keep your distance. It’s recommended to stay at least 10 feet away from turtles in the water.

And since we’re talking about respecting the ocean life, you’ll definitely want to make sure you only use reef safe sunscreen before you jump in (it’s the law).

Best time of year to snorkel on Kauai?

While you can snorkel year-round on Kauai, the best time to snorkel is during the summer months. You’ll have access to the most snorkeling spots, including those on the north shore. Because currents and waves become very dangerous during the winter months on the north shore of Kauai, the best snorkeling spots there are only accessible during the summer.

Best Snorkeling on Kauai for beginners?

Though it looks easy when you’re watching from the beach, snorkeling is actually a difficult activity. Particularly, if you’re a beginner. You have ocean currents to contend with, waves, and breathing into a tube which can feel unnatural.

In our opinion, the best snorkeling spot on Kauai for beginners is the pond at Lydgate beach. The water is protected from most currents, the bottom is mostly sandy, and there is a lifeguard on duty.

1. Makua (Tunnels) Beach

Often cited as the best snorkeling spot on Kauai, Tunnels Beach offers summer snorkelers plenty of opportunities to swim among plenty of fish and other sea life. But, you have to work for it. First, parking is a challenge. The best place to find parking is at Haena Beach Park (not to be confused with Hā’ena State Park). You’ll need to arrive early or be prepared to wait for a parking spot to open up.

Once you’ve secured parking, you’re in for a bit of a walk. You’ll head to the right and then after a few hundred yards you’ll see the reef close to the shore. This is where you can head into the water to enjoy the different types of fish, and possibly a turtle or two. The outer reef is exposed to strong currents, so stay closer to shore for an easier snorkeling experience.

This is not a spot to snorkel during the winter, thanks to strong ocean currents and swells on the north shore of Kauai. So enjoy it during the summer and head south in the winter.

Best Snorkeling Spots on Kauai Tunnels

2. Ke’e Beach

You have to plan well in advance for this one, but it’s absolutely worth it. This is probably the most beautiful beach in Kauai (bold statement, but true) and it offers some amazing snorkeling with a reef very close to the shore. Beware that outside of the reef you will encounter strong currents and rip tides, so it’s important to not venture too far away. But you won’t need to as the fish and sea life near shore is plentiful. A bonus for snorkeling here is that as you’re heading back towards shore, you can look up and see the beautiful Napali Coast mountains. This stunning setting is worth a visit, even without snorkeling.

Ke’e Beach also made our list of the best beaches on Kauai for swimming .

A reservation to visit Haena State Park and Ke’e beach is required and must be booked well in advance (it sells out quickly!). Just like Tunnels Beach, snorkeling here in the winter can be dangerous, so keep this place on the top of your list for summer vacations only.

Best snorkeling Kauai Ke'e Beach

3. Anini Beach

We love to take our 3-year-old son to this beach because the shallow reef keeps waters calm. I’ve seen some sources note that Anini Beach is the longest and widest reef in Hawaii. But it’s not just the calm water that brings people to Anini — you can also enjoy some great snorkeling here. Without needing to go far from the shore, you can see plenty of sea life amongst the coral and you can often spot a turtle or two. The water at Anini beach is shallow, and snorkeling during low tide can often mean you’re navigating areas that are too shallow to easily swim in with visibility that isn’t as clear as you’d like to have when looking at the beautiful fish.

Anini beach is long and there are two main areas people visit. The first, Anini Beach Campground offers facilities like showers, restrooms, picnic tables, and a boat ramp. Continuing past that you’ll find a few places to park along the road and continue walking the long stretches of beach.

As this is a north shore beach, currents and waves can get very dangerous in the winter, making this a bad place to get into the water during those months. Make sure to always check Hawaii Beach Safety to see current conditions and learn ways to keep yourself safe in the water.

Best Snorkeling Spots Kauai Anini Beach

4. Lydgate Beach

If you’re looking for an easy place to snorkel practically year-round, the pond at Lydgate Beach is your answer. Built with a wall of rocks to enclose it, this pond protects swimmers and snorkelers from the powerful waves and currents that are just on the other side of the rocks. But those rocks don’t keep fish from entering the pond. We were able to see large surgeonfish swimming from side to side.

Lydgate Beach is also a beach park full of amenities including a lifeguard station, bathrooms, and a large playground.

Best Snorkeling Kauai Lydgate Beach

5. Poipu Beach

Poipu Beach on the south shore of Kauai is not only one of the best beaches in Hawaii , but it is also an excellent place to snorkel. At Poipu Beach you’ll find plenty of marine life: turtles, a number of fish, and the occasional monk seal. And you don’t need to snorkel far from shore to see a wide array of sealife — the reef is a quick swim from shore.

At Poipu Beach, you’ll find two crescent-shaped beaches separated by a shallow sandbar. The area on the left is calmer and offers easy swimming. The area on the right has a few more waves but is a more popular snorkeling spot.

You also have a lifeguard here and plenty of parking, making this a fantastic place to head for snorkeling.

Remember, Hawaiian Monk Seals are endangered animals so if you do encounter them, stay away and give them their space.

Bonus: Best Boat Snorkeling Trip

While we love a good beach snorkel, there’s something special about a boat day out on the water. Especially in Kauai when you can take a snorkeling trip up the famous Napali coast. There are a number of tours you can choose from but this is the Napali Coast Snorkeling Tour we’ve had the best time on. It’s a long day, but so very worth it!

Plus you can’t go wrong with any one of the best snorkeling tours on Kauai .

Map of Kauai’s best snorkel spots

Map of best snorkeling in Kauaii Hawaii

Although Kauai isn’t nearly as large as some other Hawaiian islands, driving between different areas can take a long time. This map highlights where to find the best snorkeling in Kauai, so you can easily hit several spots on your trip!

Planning a trip to Hawaii? We’ve gathered everything you need to know in our ultimate Hawaii Trip Planner .

1. Anini Beach

Anini Beach Kauai Hawaii Lodging & Tourism Association

Just a 15-minute drive from Princeville, Anini Beach is one of the more easily accessible snorkeling sites on Kauai’s North Shore.

With calm and shallow water, Anini Beach is a great choice for snorkeling in Kauai. There are often groups of sea turtles spotted here , making it one of the best spots on the island to witness these beautiful creatures.

This beach has picnic tables, grass, and plenty of shade, making it a nice spot to hang out for a while.

Anini Beach Overview

  • Known for: clear, calm waters and sea turtles
  • Location: North Shore
  • Other attractions nearby: Kilauea Lighthouse
  • Facilities: picnic tables, restrooms, showers
  • Parking: Decent sized parking lot, but it can fill up later in the day, especially on weekends
  • Google Maps location

2. Tunnels Beach (Makua)

Tunnels Beach Kauai Hawaii

Also known as Makua Beach, Tunnels Beach is one of the most popular destinations on the entire island . If it looks familiar, perhaps you recognize it from the movie South Pacific .

Tunnels Beach has some of the best scenery on the island , but what really make it special for snorkeling are the underwater lava tubes (the namesake “tunnels”)!

The beach here is a large crescent shape, so it’s easy to claim your own slice of paradise even on the busiest days. Plus, it’s adjacent to Haena Beach Park, offering easy access to classic park amenities .

Tunnels Beach Overview

  • Known for: Underwater lava tubes that create unique caves and tunnels for snorkeling
  • Tips for visiting: Stay closer to the shore, as the outer reef gets bashed with large swells
  • Facilities: Picnic tables and lifeguard (in the summer), plus access to facilities at neighboring Haena Beach Park
  • Parking: Large lot available at Haena Beach Park, but you’ll need to walk 5-10 minutes to the beach

3. Poipu Beach

Poipu Beach Kauai Hawaii

Another wildly popular Kauai beach, Poipu is also unique. The beach is technically a tombola , a sand spit formed where two crescent-shaped bays join together. So technically, Poipu Beach is two beaches in one !

While both bays are calm and gorgeous, the eastern side is a bit better for snorkeling because lava rocks create a barrier against the waves.

Sea turtles make frequent appearances, as do endangered Hawaiian monk seals , who enjoy napping on the tombola.

Poipu Beach Overview

Monk seal Poipu Beach Kauai Hawaii

  • Known for: Two side-by-side bays, sea turtles, and occasional monk seals
  • Location: South Shore
  • Tips for visiting: Snorkeling is better in the eastern bay (right-hand if you’re standing on the beach facing the ocean)
  • Facilities: Restrooms with showers, picnic tables, lifeguard stations, playground, snorkel and surfboard rentals
  • Parking: Two large, free parking lots across from the beach, but arrive early — this is one of Kauai’s most popular beaches!

4. Ke’e Beach

Ke'e Beach Kauai Hawaii Lodging & Tourism Association

If you know anything about the renowned N ā Pali Coast , you’ll believe us when we say that Ke’e Beach is home to some of the best snorkeling in Kauai…it’s as close as you can get to the N ā Pali Coast by car !

Many locals say this is the island’s most beautiful beach . A large reef close to shore provides calm, shallow conditions ideal for snorkeling. Outside this area, strong rip tides are common, so stick close to shore.

Ke’e Beach is part of Hā’ena State Park (different from Haena Beach Park), and advance reservations are required . Tickets are released on a rolling 30-day basis, and sell out within minutes.

Ke’e Beach Overview

  • Known for: Jaw-dropping Nā Pali Coast scenery
  • Tips for visiting: Tickets are released on gohaena.com daily at 12:01 am, and you’ll have a higher likelihood of getting one if you’re willing to take the North Shore Shuttle
  • Facilities: Bathrooms, picnic tables, lifeguard stations
  • Parking: Limited to 100 spots, permits required; riding the North Shore Shuttle is highly recommended

Lydgate Beach Kauai Hawaii Lodging & Tourism Association

One of the few locations for the best snorkeling in Kauai that’s not on either the North or South Shore, Lydgate is fantastic for beginners and families .

There’s a man made barrier reef of lava rocks here, forming a calm, well-sheltered lagoon just off the shore. Brightly-colored fish and other sea creatures love hanging out in the lagoon, so snorkeling newbies get the full experience without having to deal with any waves!

There’s even a playground and great picnic facilities at this beach, making the perfect family day out.

Lydgate Beach Overview

  • Known for: Its unique natural lagoon
  • Location: East Shore
  • Tips for visiting: The current outside the lagoon is volatile, so be sure to stay in the protected area
  • Facilities: Bathrooms with showers, manned lifeguard station, picnic tables, playground
  • Parking: Plenty of parking at Lydgate Beach Park, plus more along Haleilio Road within easy walking distance

6. Hideaway Beach

Hideaway Beach Kauiai Hawaii

As its name implies, Hideaway Beach is secluded . It’s a smaller beach that requires hiking a short but steep and somewhat challenging dirt trail with steps and rope railings. Therefore, it’s usually not as busy as other Kauai beaches.

However, the unique reef and crystal-clear water are well worth the trek! The reef at Hideaway has tons of pockets and grooves (almost like small caves ) that fish (and sea turtles !) love.

Avoid snorkeling here in the winter, as swells at Hideaway are notoriously huge.

Hideaway Beach Overview

  • Known for: TONS of colorful fish that hang out in the small cave-like pockets in the reef
  • Location: North Shore (Princeville)
  • Tips for visiting: While tempting, don’t park at private vacation rentals. You WILL get towed!
  • Facilities: None
  • Parking: Small (9-10 cars) public parking lot near the St. Regis Hotel

7. Koloa Landing

Koloa Landing Kauai whalers-cove-beach-access (Kauai.com)

If you’re a strong swimmer or experienced snorkeler/diver , you’ll find that Koloa Landing has some of the best snorkeling in Kauai.

You’ll have to work for it, though – getting to the area where there’s plentiful marine life and great snorkeling involves swimming across the horseshoe-shaped bay .

The area is completely exposed to the open ocean and becomes very deep, very quickly, so it truly is for more advanced snorkeling.

Koloa Beach Overview

  • Known for: An extremely popular dive site, coveted for the abundance of intact, colorful coral heads
  • Tips for visiting: There is no beach entry for Koloa Landing, so you’ll enter from the boat ramp (no longer used for boats)
  • Facilities: Portable toilets in the parking lot
  • Parking: Small dirt parking lot at the boat ramp

8. Prince Kuhio Beach

prince-kuhio-beach Kauai (Doug Porter - Summit Pacific)

If swimming with sea turtles is on your bucket list, Prince Kuhio (PK’s) Beach should be at the top of your Kauai itinerary!

The reefs and fish here aren’t quite as impressive as some other spots around the island, but the abundance of green sea turtles can’t be beat. They seem to favor the warm, shallow reef here, and there are almost always at least a couple.

If you’re island hopping on your Hawaii trip and really love turtles, Maluaka Beach (aka “Turtle Town”) is one of the best snorkeling spots in Maui , and yes, is known for an abundance of our favorite green sea creatures!

After snorkeling, grab a bite to eat at the Beach House restaurant next door!

Prince Kuhio Beach is often (mistakenly!) referred to as Lawai Beach , but that’s actually in another part of Kauai.

Prince Kuhio Beach Overview

  • Known for: Hawaiian green sea turtles
  • Tips for visiting: The water entry here is made of lava rocks rather than sand, so it’s not the most beginner-friendly snorkeling spot and water shoes come in handy
  • Facilities: Bathrooms across the street
  • Parking: Limited street parking near the Beach House restaurant

9. Salt Pond Beach Park

Salt Pond Beach Park (Kauai.com)

An underwater coral reef here creates a calm cove that serves as a breakwater for waves . The main part of the bay gets somewhat deep, but both ends are shallow and offer some of the best snorkeling in Kauai for little ones.

It’s tucked well away from other popular beaches, so it’s rarely crowded , and the water is shallow enough on one side that you can also explore tidepools at low tide !

As a major bonus, the shallow, warm waters near Salt Pond Beach attract migrating humpback whales between December and April!

Salt Pond Park Overview

  • Known for: Shallow pools ideal for families with young kids, and whale-watching in the winter
  • Location: Southwest Shore (Hanapepe)
  • Tips for visiting: This is one of very few places you can camp on Kauai, and it costs just $3 per adult, per night. Get Kauai County camping permits here
  • Facilities: Restrooms, picnic tables, BBQ grills, lifeguard station, campsites, occasional food trucks
  • Parking: Ample parking

Snorkeling in Kauai FAQs

Snorkeling

Now that you know where to find the best snorkeling in Kauai, it’s time to “dive” into some of the other specifics!

What is the best time of year to go snorkeling in Kauai?

April through October is the best time for snorkeling in Kauai, when water conditions are generally calm and ocean temps hover around 70 degrees.

If you’re visiting between November and March and have your heart set on snorkeling, stick to one of the “beginner” beaches, like Anini or Salt Pond.

Psst! We we have a whole guide covering the  best times to visit Hawaii  and what to expect during each season.

What part of Kauai has the best snorkeling?

The island’s North and South Shores offer the best snorkeling in Kauai overall. However, when you’re visiting plays a role , too.

Winter currents on the North Shore are incredibly strong , creating less-than-ideal snorkeling conditions. Head to the South Shore in the winter months, but in the summer, you can’t beat snorkeling on the North Shore.

What type of sea creatures will I see?

Hawaiian green sea turtle

One of the great things about snorkeling is that every experience will likely be totally different! In Kauai, you have an excellent chance of seeing all types of colorful fish, manta rays , moray eels, sea turtles , and even monk seals .

Can you rent snorkeling gear in Hawaii?

YES! Plenty of dive and surf shops rent snorkel gear . Also, check with your accommodation – traditional hotels often rent or even loan out snorkel equipment, and your Airbnb host may have some you’re welcome to use!

Makana Charters

Makana Charters: Our Top Pick

For over 20 years, this native Hawaiian-owned company has been taking guests to explore sea caves, spot dolphins and whales, and experience the best snorkeling in Kauai in small groups.

This reputable company has been in operation since 1980, offering a variety of snorkeling tours (and other excursions!) ranging from small groups on rafts to luxury yachts with dinner.

7 Tips for snorkeling in Kauai

Snorkeling

Before you get into the water, here are some tips to ensure that you get the most out of your Kauai snorkeling experience.

1. Wear reef safe sunscreen

Reef safe sunscreen

Chemicals in regular sunscreen are harmful to fragile reefs, and they accumulate in the water as people snorkel and swim. Reef-safe sunscreen has less harmful ingredients and won’t cause coral bleaching and other permanent damage. We recommend this brand .

2. Never touch any sea life

Hawaiian monk seal Poipu Beach Kauai

Aside from it not being good for them, touching marine life in Hawaii can cost you – sea turtles and monk seals are federally protected, and just touching one could result in a fine up to $10,000!

3. Don’t feed sea creatures

There are many reasons not to feed sea creatures. It could cause them to get sick or condition them to depend on humans for food. Plus, it can make them so full that they don’t eat algae and other plants that rely on the process. Imagine what a field would look like if cows stopped eating!

4. Dispose of your trash properly (or take it with you)

best snorkeling tour in kauai

Responsible Travel Tip: Go a step beyond and pick up 3 pieces of rubbish so you can make the beach more beautiful than before you came.

5. Know the water conditions and use caution

Hapuna Beach Hawai'i Island

Always check current conditions before heading out, and watch the water’s behavior for 15-20 minutes from the beach before going in — even if you’ve been to a particular spot dozens of times.

6. Wear a rash guard

Rash guards provide protection from the sun , as well as a barrier against nicks and scrapes . It’s easy to bump into coral or something else sharp underwater and not even realize it until later!

7. Don’t leave valuables in plain sight

Snorkeling and swimming are popular activities in Kauai, and unfortunately, criminals take advantage of it. Try to leave valuables at your accommodation when you head out , but if you can’t, hide them as best you can, whether it’s in your vehicle or in a bag or cooler on the beach.

What to wear and pack for snorkeling

Snorkel

Snorkeling seems super simple and straightforward, but there are some items that can make your experience even better!

  • Rash guard or swim shirt to protect your skin from the sun
  • Reef-safe sunscreen
  • Snorkel gear
  • Water bottle
  • Dry bag (to keep valuables dry and sand-free)
  • Towel
  • Lightweight tarp or sarong to sit on the beach ( we love this one )

So whether you’re a beginner snorkeler or have experienced phenomenal snorkeling in the past, this guide has everything you’ll need to plan your Kauai snorkeling adventures.

Snorkeling Kauai – tour vs. beach

snorkeling beaches kauai

Kauai has an incredibly robust underwater ecosystem that begs to be explored. And taking a snorkeling tour or hitting one of Kauai’s gorgeous beaches are both really good options.

Here are a few things to consider when deciding between a tour or just hitting a beach:

Convenience

Let’s chat about each real quick…

Snorkeling equipment

With a Kauai snorkeling tour , all the gear is there and ready for you. They’ll size you for everything you’ll need for your underwater adventure. Plus the tour company will haul it around for you!

If you decide to opt out of the tour and hit a beach (or several) during your trip to Hawaii, you’ll need to bring snorkeling gear to the islands with you or rent gear from a local shop on the island.

kauai snorkeling tips

Renting gear can be relatively inexpensive if you just go once or twice, but if you want to hit many of the best snorkeling beaches in Kauai, it can really add up.

My husband and I always travel with snorkeling gear. Having snorkeled places like Belize and Turks and Caicos , it’s just one of those things we expect to pack when hitting a tropical destination.

If you love to travel, it’s a great idea to buy snorkeling equipment now for your Kauai trip and future vacations. Here’s the snorkeling gear I recommend from Amazon.

Well, it’s probably way more convenient to take a snorkeling tour in Kauai than lugging around snorkeling gear. Especially if you’re just planning to snorkel once.

However if you’re staying near an amazing beach that’s perfect for underwater sightseeing, then perhaps packing some snorkel gear for your trip is the right fit.

Also consider your group size – it may be more convenient for large groups or even for solo traveling to Hawaii to take an organized tour.

Well you can bet that taking a snorkeling tour will be far more expensive than buying your own snorkeling gear before you go. But also consider how expensive your checked bags are! Because if you’re packing face masks and fins, your luggage fills up fast.

These extra perks of taking a Kauai snorkeling tour may be worth the price:

  • Many snorkeling tours on Kauai include lunch, snacks or drinks
  • You could get incredible island views from the boat that you just can’t get from the beach
  • Option to purchase beautiful snorkeling photos of yourself and your group with cameras actually designed to take photos underwater

From shorter, 2-hour snorkeling tours on the south shore of Kauai, to a day trip up the majestic NaPali Coast or even a kayaking and snorkel combination, this site has a ton of options for snorkeling tours in Kauai.

Alright now that we’ve covered snorkeling options and amazing Kauai snorkeling tours, let’s get to the best beaches to snorkel!

Best snorkeling beaches in Kauai

Not all Kauai beaches are great for snorkeling so this guide goes over which beaches are best and why.

Let’s dive in!

1. Hanalei Bay snorkeling (great for families)

best snorkeling kauai aerial view of hanalei bay

Hanalei Bay is a popular spot for swimming, snorkeling and even surfing. I’ve seen this beach on beautiful calm days and on high surf days, and if you can make it to this beach on a calm day, then you’re in for a great time!

I t’s a perfect spot for families because the depth of the beach is significant, so there’s lots of room for kids to play in the sand. And even though this beach is on the north shore of Kauai, which traditionally has stronger waves, the bay tends to break up the surf.

The water is relatively shallow, especially near the Hanalei Pier so it’s really a great spot to snorkel!

Address: navigate to Hanalei Beach or Hanalei Pavillion Beach Park, Hawaii 96714 Restrooms and rinse off stations: yes, multiple

2. Lawai Beach

snorkeling with turtles kauai

This tiny beach located on the south shore of Kauai is perfect for watching sea turtles! It’s a rocky beach with tons of coral and the sea turtles love this cove!

This is one of the top snorkeling beaches in Kauai, because you’re almost guaranteed to see a sea turtle!

Use caution not to step on the coral as you get in and out of the water. Doing so damages the delicate coral. And NEVER touch a sea turtle. Snorkeling etiquette is important, okay?

Address: navigate to Lawai Beach Koloa, HI 96756 Restrooms and rinse off stations: yes, across the street

3. Tunnels Beach snorkeling

tunnels beach snorkeling

This is one of the most popular snorkeling spots in all of Kauai. Tunnels Beach is on the north shore, with a large reef formation next to the beach.

It’s one of those beaches you just walk right off the beach with your snorkel gear. The reef does a great job of breaking up the waves, but the currents can still be strong in this area.

Considering it’s such a popular snorkeling spot, it can be difficult to find parking . Be courteous to the locals and don’t park on private property. Walk further if you need to!

Pro tip: pack your water shoes for this beach. I recommend water shoes for many beaches in Kauai , but Tunnels Beach is especially rough.

These are the water shoes I took with me to Kauai. They’ve traveled all over the world with me and have lasted several years.

Address: 5-7652 Kuhio Hwy, Hanalei, HI 96714 (address is for Makua Beach, a short walk away) Restrooms and rinse off stations: no

4. Hideaway Beach

best snorkeling kauai

My favorite beach in Kauai! Hideaway Beach is a gorgeous hidden beach that requires a hike to get to it. It’s a perfect spot to spend an afternoon snorkeling, too!

The patches of coral look stunning as you hike down the steep path towards the beach below. Once out in the water, you’ll snorkel those coral spots as brightly colored fish swim about, and maybe even a glimpse of a sea turtle or two!

Hideaway Beach is a great snorkeling spot for beginners or kids, as long as the steep hike is not a problem.

snorkeling beaches kauai

Pro tip: start your snorkeling adventure during non-peak hours by getting to Hideaway Beach early ! There’s extremely limited parking and hefty fines for parking anywhere but a designated spot.

Address: navigate to Hideaway Beach, Princeville, HI 96722 Restrooms and rinse off stations: no

Kauai snorkeling tips

Okay, I just want to pause this list here to mention a few things.

Hawaii is a sacred place and if you’re going to visit this gorgeous destination, be respectful of the local culture and marine life. Here are my top tips for snorkeling Kauai.

Keep your distance from sea turtles or “honu”

snorkeling kauai hideaway beach turtle

It’s such a delight to encounter sea turtles while snorkeling! They’re so smooth underwater and interesting to watch, it almost feels magical.

Sea turtles, or honu , are significant in Hawaiian culture , providing a connection between sea, land and people. It’s critically important that people don’t touch or get too close to sea turtles as they lie on the beach or while snorkeling.

Read about honu and the cultural significance here . Learn more about Hawaii’s sea turtle recommendations here .

Do not step on coral reefs

Coral reefs are extremely fragile and should be protected. As visitors, it’s important that you look with your eyes only, and not touch or stand on the coral.

shark while snorkeling hawaii

Oils from fingers can damage or even kill an entire colony of coral. And standing up on it kills living coral polyps that are the foundation of the reef structure.

So don’t touch and use care when getting in and out of the water or while adjusting your snorkel mask.

Use reef-safe sunblock

Traditional sunblock is toxic to marine life. Be sure to only use reef-safe sunscreen while you’re in Kauai, or any other beach destination for that matter.

Here’s my favorite sunblock on Amazon , I’ve used it on several beachy getaways and it even smells delightful. Save the marine life and buy the right sunblock now.

Best snorkeling Kauai – list continued

5. anini beach kauai.

anini beach kauai

Can I just say this beach might be perfect for snorkeling? On a list of the best snorkeling beaches in Kauai, Anini Beach is a highlight for sure!

Anini Beach is one of the largest beaches on Kauai and spans an area with a huge coral reef. It has extremely shallow water and the surf is mild… even non-existent at times.

Anini Beach is always a nice break from the strong waves of other popular snorkeling beaches on the island. It’s a perfect snorkeling spot for kids, beginners, or anyone who loves snorkeling!

This is one of those snorkeling beaches that can be difficult to get in and out of the water without standing on coral, so just be cautious not to damage the coral reef.

Address: navigate to Anini Beach, Kalihiwai, HI 96754 Restrooms and rinse off stations: yes, multiple

6. Snorkeling Kauai at Kiahuna Beach

overlooking kiahuna beach

Located on the south shore of Kauai, this beach is an active one. I’ve regularly seen snorkelers, surfers and swimmers…even all at once!

Kauai snorkeling beaches are plentiful on the south side of the island due to the calmer nature of the ocean compared to the north shore. I like snorkeling at Kiahuna Beach, because it’s a large cove so there’s usually a lot of space for everyone to enjoy.

Also, I’ve spotted a few sea turtles at this cove over the years. 🙂

Kiahuna beach for snorkeling kauai

Bonus: this area is awesome for sunsets! I’ve spent many nights sitting with my toes in the sand while the sun lights up the sky. If you like palm trees in your sunset, you’ll get the perfect photo at the Kiahuna Plantation or just beyond the beach at the Sheraton Kauai Resort.

Address: navigate to Kiahuna Beach, Koloa, HI 96756 Restrooms and rinse off stations: yes (restrooms are a ways off the beach though)

7. NaPali Coast snorkeling

snorkeling tour kauai napali coast

Okay so this snorkeling spot can only be done via snorkeling tour . But to see the spectacular views of the NaPali coast via boat is a snorkeling adventure you’ll never forget!

Side note: The first time I saw the NaPali Coast was via helicopter and it was mind-blowing! I’ve experienced it’s beauty by hiking the Kalalau Trail and let me tell ya, you gotta see this coast here during your trip to Kauai!

The best time to do a snorkeling tour on the NaPali Coast is during summer, as the ocean tends to be more calm. The waves and surf can get very rough during the winter months, so you’ll more likely set sail in the summer, although tours are offered all year long.

Pro tip: check out the cancellation and reschedule policy by your snorkeling tour provider. The weather is not always favorable for boating to the coast.

Book your NaPali Coast snorkeling tour here.

NaPali Coast snorkeling is a bucket list experience that will stick with you for a lifetime!

8. Lydgate Beach Park

lydgate beach park

Lydgate Beach Park on east Kauai is a unique beach, and a perfect spot to learn how to snorkel. The beach itself sits near the Wailua River, which dumps driftwood out of the river and it settles on the beach. So it’s a fun spot to watch a sunrise and for kids to explore.

But back to the snorkeling! The waves on Kauai can be relentless, so back in the 1960’s two large rock-enclosed pools were created with underwater rock walls. That prevents strong currents from taking over your snorkeling activity.

It’s fun to see fish while snorkeling in the pool, as they’ll regularly make their way through the holes in the rock wall. It’s a great spot for beginners or young snorkelers.

Bonus: Lydgate Beach Park has a ton of other family-friendly features too, such as a large playground, picnic tables and even a pavilion.

Address: Leho Dr, Lihue, HI 96766 Restrooms and rinse off stations: yes, multiple

9. Kauai Snorkeling on the North Shore: Ke’e Beach

kee beach Kauai Hawaii

As far north as you can get via car on Kauai is Ke’e Beach in Ha’ena State Park. Snorkeling is only recommended at Ke’e Beach on calm water days, as the currents on the north shore are very strong. Generally, summer is the best time to snorkel at Ke’e Beach.

The state park requires a reservation as it’s home of the famous Kalalau Trail, so there’s a bit of planning involved and a small fee.

Make state park reservations here . And if you’re interested in hiking one of the most famous trails in the world, check out the Kalalau Trail details, too!

Address: navigate to Ke’e Beach Hawaii 96746 Restrooms and rinse off stations: yes

10. Poipu Beach snorkeling

monk seal on poipu beach

Alright the last on this list of best snorkeling beaches in Kauai is the popular Poipu Beach. Named one of the world’s best beaches by the Travel Channel , Poipu Beach cannot be missed on a trip to Kauai.

There’s plenty of sunshine and marine life at Poipu Beach, making for excellent snorkeling! I’ve seen sea turtles, seals and plenty of colorful fish. Just a reminder to keep a far distance from all sea life – in the water or on the beach!

The beach is large and the has great amenities, including a park for kids, picnic tables, restrooms and rinse-off stations. After a day of snorkeling and beaching, grab a bite to eat at one of Kauai’s best restaurants . The area has plenty of places nearby!

Address: navigate to Poipu Beach, Koloa, HI 96756 Restrooms and rinse off stations: yes

Snorkeling in Kauai? You’re in for a treat! The island’s crystal-clear waters and rich marine life make it a top spot. Before you jump in, here’s some snorkeling tips to make your adventure unforgettable.

Go snorkeling when the sun is bright and the sea is calm. This will give you the clearest view of fish and coral below. Early mornings are usually best – less crowded too!

Always keep safety in mind. Watch out for strong currents and stay within areas marked safe for swimming. And remember, never touch the marine life; enjoy watching them from a distance.

The best time to snorkel in Kauai is during the  summer months . This period offers  calmer currents and waves , making it safer for you. If you’re planning a trip around this time,

Ke’e Beach  is an ideal spot for your underwater adventure, especially with its calm waters.

To enjoy snorkeling on Kauai’s North Shore or around the island’s beloved spots like Tunnels Beach and Poipu Beach, timing your visit from  May through September  optimizes your experience.

The ocean is more welcoming then, giving you  clear views of fish, sea turtles , and maybe even the occasional  Hawaiian monk seal close to shore .

Visiting Hawaii offers you a chance to explore some of the best snorkeling spots in Kauai. Before you get into the water, it’s crucial to keep safety in mind.

Here are key precautions to ensure your underwater adventures are both fun and safe.

  • Check the weather and ocean conditions before heading out. Strong currents and high waves can make snorkeling dangerous, especially during winter months at places like Ke’e Beach.
  • Always  snorkel with a buddy . It’s safer and more fun when you have someone to share the experience with. Plus, you can look out for each other.
  • Use reef-safe sunscreen  to protect yourself from sunburn without harming marine life. The chemicals in regular sunscreens can damage coral reefs and the creatures that call them home.
  • Stay hydrated and take breaks  when you need them. Snorkeling can be tiring, so make sure to drink plenty of water and rest on the beach or in the shade.
  • Respect marine life  by not touching or feeding fish and other sea animals. Some species are endangered, like Hawaiian green sea turtles and monk seals, so it’s important to admire them from a distance.
  • Wear a life jacket  if you’re not a strong swimmer or if swimming conditions are tough. It’s an easy way to stay safe while enjoying your snorkeling adventure.
  • Be mindful of where you step or kick  while snorkeling over shallow reefs, such as at Anini Beach, to avoid damaging coral or injuring yourself on sharp rocks.
  • Pay attention to signs at beaches  that may warn of hazards or restricted areas meant for your safety as well as for environmental protection efforts.
  • Ensure your equipment fits well before getting into the water; poorly fitting gear can leak or become uncomfortable, distracting you from safely enjoying your snorkel experience.
  • Educate yourself on local regulations and etiquette—this includes understanding designated snorkeling areas, respecting no-touch rules for coral reefs, and knowing what to do if you encounter wildlife like sea turtles or seals.

Following these simple steps lets everyone enjoy the best snorkeling on Kauai while keeping both snorkelers and marine ecosystems safe and healthy.

As we’ve explored the best places to snorkel in Kauai, from the tranquil waters of Ke’e Beach to the vibrant marine life at Tunnels Beach, it’s clear that Kauai offers some of the most fantastic snorkeling conditions in the world.

See Turtles on our Top-Rated Kauai Snorkeling Tours

We got up close and personal - but not too close - to about 5 green sea turtles. The two spots we visited were great, the 1st was a hangout for turtles and the 2nd a reef closer to shore schooling with fish... We really loved this trip and the great sea life we saw, and enjoyed Davey and Dave as our guides.

So nice to get up close and personal...none of this 50 people to a boat business. Very knowledgeable staff. JC and Jon were amazing! Found the whales right away and shared some very interesting facts on the trip. Highly recommend!

We saw a ton of turtles & even a small shark. They went out of their way to make sure the experience was amazing & it was! Would definitely recommend booking thru Zodiac! The picnic lunch at the harbor was a nice ending to a wonderful morning!

First time going on a rafted boat tour. I enjoyed the fantastic captain (JC and her crew). They made the trip so much fun. I enjoyed the opportunity to snorkel in some amazing places that I would never had known about. I highly recommend booking your next trip with Z tours.

My 8yr old and I absolutely loved this experience! The crew is so friendly and fun to be around as well as knowledgeable of the area and helpful going out of their way to ensure each guest has what they need. We saw so many sea turtles and beautiful fish! This was our best adventure of the vacation I would go again over and over!

A Beginner’s Guide to Snorkeling on Kauai

a-turtle-while-snorkeling

Are you planning a trip to Kauai and looking for an exciting underwater adventure? Snorkeling is the perfect opportunity for you! As a beginner, it’s essential to know the basics of snorkeling to ensure a safe and enjoyable experience. In this guide, we’ll cover everything you need to know to get started and have a great time while doing it.

What is Snorkeling?

Snorkeling is a popular water activity that involves swimming with a snorkel mask, fins, and a snorkel tube. The mask allows you to see underwater, the fins help you move through the water, and the snorkel tube allows you to breathe while your face is submerged. Snorkeling is an excellent way to explore the underwater world without the need for scuba gear.

What Do I Need To Know Before Snorkeling In Hawaii?

If you’re an experienced snorkeler, you can go ahead and skip this section. But for those looking to get a basic understanding of snorkeling in Hawaii, this can help familiarize you with the activity.

Safety First

While we’ll cover basic snorkeling safety more in-depth later on in the article, safety is the most important part of snorkeling. Some golden rules of snorkeling in Hawaii: always snorkel with a buddy, avoid touching sea life or getting too close to marine animals , check the surf report, and do a bit of research on your snorkeling destination . There are a variety of beaches on Kauai that are perfect for beginners. These are normally lifeguarded beaches with not a ton of waves or currents present.

What Not To Touch When Snorkeling In Hawaii

As we said earlier, stay away from sealife and other marine creatures. Avoid touching coral reefs, sea urchins, or shells that you can’t 100% identify. Certain shells can be poisonous! We cover a more in-depth guide on what not to touch if you’re looking to learn more .

Make Sure Your Snorkeling Gear Fits

Before you embark on your snorkeling adventure, it’s essential to choose the right gear. Here are some tips for selecting the right gear:

  • Mask : Choose a mask that fits well and seals tightly around your face to prevent water from entering. Try on different masks to find one that is comfortable and provides a clear view.
  • Snorkel : Look for a snorkel that is the right length and diameter for your face. A snorkel that is too long or too short can make it difficult to breathe. Some people opt to snorkel without a snorkel, but we recommend starting with one if you’re a beginner.
  • Fins : Choose fins that fit snugly and are comfortable to wear. Fins help you move through the water with less effort, allowing you to stay underwater longer.

What Time Of Year Is Best For Snorkeling On Kauai?

In general, the best months for snorkeling are the summer months when beaches are calmer, and the surf is not as rough. Winter months bring stronger currents which can make some beaches potentially dangerous for snorkeling or swimming . If you’re visiting Kauai in the winter, ask around local snorkel shops for good winter snorkeling beaches. Coming to Kauai in the winter is still an amazing time, regardless of what you’re looking for.

Will I See Sharks Snorkeling In Hawaii?

Sharks are in the waters of every Hawaiian Island, including Kauai. That being said – shark encounters or attacks are extremely rare if you follow some basic ocean safety rules. If you see a shark – swim to the closest safe point. Avoid wearing shiny objects, entering the water with open/bleeding cuts, and avoiding low visibility conditions. There’s plenty you can do to minimize your chances of encountering a shark, and you can prepare yourself for an encounter with a shark.

If you’re curious about what kinds of sharks are in Hawaii, read our guide about the shark species of Hawaii!

What To Bring With You Snorkeling

You’ll want to bring more than just your snorkeling gear depending on where your headed to go snorkeling . Of course, you’ll want the basics like a swimsuit, towels, and a change of clothes.

Make sure you bring reef-safe sunscreen. If you plan on being out for a long time, we recommend bringing water and snacks to stay hydrated and energized. Snorkeling can get pretty tiring! Water shoes that protect your feet can also be extremely useful. If you’re unsure about what you need for a certain snorkeling trip, ask your local snorkel shops!

Basic Hawaii Snorkeling Etiquette

While snorkeling can be an exciting and fun activity, it is essential to follow proper snorkeling etiquette. Here are some guidelines to follow when snorkeling:

  • Respect the marine life : While snorkeling, it is important to remember that you are a guest in the marine life’s home. Do not touch or harass marine life, and give them plenty of space.
  • Do not touch the reef : Touching the reef can harm the coral and other marine life living there. Remember to keep your fins and hands away from the reef.
  • Avoid standing on the reef : Standing on the reef can also harm the coral and marine life living there. If you need to rest, float on your back instead.
  • Don’t litter : Do not leave any trash or waste behind when snorkeling. It can harm the marine life and damage the environment.
  • Be aware of other snorkelers : When snorkeling in a group, be aware of other snorkelers in the area. Avoid kicking or bumping into them and give them plenty of space.
  • Use Reef-Safe Sunscreen To Protect The Environment: Hawaii’s coral reefs are delicate. By using reef-safe sunscreen, you protect the local environment and wildlife, along with yourself!
  • Don’t Feed Any Animals: Do not feed any animals, whether they’re in the water or outside of the water.
  • Don’t Touch Turtles : Touching turtles or any wildlife in Hawaii is illegal and punishable with fines or even jail time!

Best Beginner Snorkeling Spots & Beaches On Kauai

For beginners looking to ease into the amazing underwater world of Kauai, these spots are for you.

Anini Beach

A popular spot for all sorts of activities – including snorkeling! Anini Beach boasts calm waters, amazing views, and plenty of amenities nearby. Anini Beach has one of Hawaii’s largest reefs, making it a great spot to introduce yourself to snorkeling. It’s well-known for seeing all sorts of marine life like turtles, fish, and maybe even manta rays. Overall, Anini Beach is a great place to get started .

Poipu Beach Park

If you’re on the South Side and want to try snorkeling for the first time, Poipu is a great option. Poipu Beach Park is a great beginner spot, as long as there isn’t a big south swell. Although most of the area at Poipu Beach has a sandy bottom, there’s a small rocky area to the right with some coral, fish, and usually a few other people.

Lydgate Beach Park

The park has a large protected area, which is ideal for calm and safe snorkeling. The beach is protected by a man-made rock wall, which helps to break the waves and provide a sheltered environment for snorkelers. Additionally, the park features two large rock-enclosed pools, which are great for beginners to practice their snorkeling skills in a calm and controlled environment. The water at Lydgate Beach Park is pretty clear, and visitors can expect to see a variety of fish and marine life while snorkeling here.

Kauai Snorkeling Safety Tips

Snorkeling can be a safe and enjoyable activity if you follow some basic safety guidelines:

  • Swim with a partner : Always swim with a partner and stay within sight of each other.
  • Know your limits : Don’t push yourself beyond your snorkeling comfort level . If you feel tired or uncomfortable, it’s time to head back to shore.
  • Stay in shallow water : Stick to shallow water, especially if you’re a beginner. Avoid areas with strong currents or rough waves.
  • Watch for marine life : While snorkeling, keep an eye out for marine life. Give them plenty of space and never touch them.
  • Check the weather : Check the weather forecast before you go snorkeling. Avoid snorkeling in high winds or storms.
  • Check The Surf/Tide Report: The surf and tide report will let you know if there are risks of rip currents etc. In general, low tide can be better than high tide for snorkeling.
  • Pay Attention To Any Warning Signs : Some beaches will have warning signs up if there are any hazards present, such as strong currents or shark advisories. These signs are there for your safety!
  • Research Your Snorkeling Location : The ocean is always changing, along with the shores. Be sure to look into where you’re going snorkeling so you can plan accordingly.

An oceanfront estate architect Ralph D. Anderson designed as his family’s vacation home has recently come on the market for $13,995,000.

The 1-acre Hawaiian property, which last changed hands in 2005 for $5.7 million, was first listed in 2022 for $15 million. The price was reduced in February.

Anderson, the “ father of Pioneer Square ,” was known for using natural design elements. Anderson received accolades in the 1960s for his restoration work in Seattle’s Historic District. He died in 2010 at the age of 86.

The estate is located near a popular surfing spot on the south shore of Kauai . The four-bedroom residence was recently the most viewed home on Realtor.com® .

It features 3,706 square feet of living space with vaulted wood ceilings, lava rock pillars, walls of glass, and private lanais.

‘Views and private perspectives’

“The best real estate in the Hawaiian islands command strategic vantage points beyond the straightaway coast, availing both views and private perspectives,” says listing agent Hannah Sirois , of Sirois Kaua’i. “Those who seek coveted rare offerings recognize these notable characteristics. Ralph D. Anderson knew this site when he saw it and claimed it as his own.”

“This home opens up views in both an easterly and westerly direction while sitting on a peninsula that begins with a cozy beach and then showcases the premier surf spots in Poipu.” Sirois says. “Spending all day here is peaceful, majestic, and so entertaining.”
