Overall in India we find that and have opportunity to go on an 11-day tour of North East India and it was truly an unforgettable experience. The tour package was well-organized and covered all the major destinations in the region, giving us a comprehensive overview of the culture, history, and natural beauty of this lesser-explored part of India. The tour started in Guwahati, the gateway to North East India, where we were greeted by our friendly and knowledgeable tour guide. From there, we traveled to Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya, known as the 'Scotland of the East' for its stunning landscapes and pleasant climate. We visited the famous Umiam Lake, also known as Barapani Lake, and were mesmerized by its crystal clear water and surrounding hills. Next, we headed to Cherrapunjee, one of the wettest places on earth, where we got to witness the spectacular Seven Sisters Waterfall and the living root bridges, a unique and fascinating man-made wonder. The tour also took us to Mawlynnong, known as the cleanest village in Asia, and we were amazed by its pristine surroundings and the warm hospitality of the locals. We then continued our journey to Kaziranga National Park, home to the famous one-horned rhinoceros. We were lucky enough to spot these magnificent creatures during our safari in the park. The tour also included a visit to Majuli Island, the world's largest river island, where we got to experience the unique Assamese culture and enjoy a traditional dance performance. The highlight of the tour was our visit to Tawang, located in the state of Arunachal Pradesh, which is home to the second-largest Buddhist monastery in the world. The monastery was a sight to behold, and we were fortunate to witness the daily rituals and prayers of the monks. The tour also took us to the picturesque Sela Pass, which offered breathtaking views of the Himalayan mountains. Throughout the tour, we were impressed by the beauty and diversity of North East India. The accommodations provided were comfortable and the food was delicious, giving us a taste of the local cuisine. Our tour guide was highly knowledgeable and shared interesting insights about the places we visited. Overall, I would highly recommend this 11-day tour package to anyone looking to explore the exotic North East region of India. It was a perfect blend of nature, culture, and adventure, and I returned home with a deeper appreciation for this lesser-known part of our country.
We had a fantastic trip in the North East of India, Organized by Hemender from Travelcon.Visiting the serene mountains was a memorable trip for both of us and we were really felt like we are at a paradise. We informed hemender that we do not want to go the usual Itinerary and wanted few different things and he helped us to fulfil that requirements.I had been to India couple of Times so I knew how to negotiate on prices. There were few airlines and many transfers while visiting this majestic land but was handled seamlessly. Our local guides were awesome and experienced. Our Driver was also a nice person who took care of all our needs while driving. 10/10 I would recommend Travelcon among my friends/family members.

This was my 3rd trip to beautiful India in 3 years and by far the best.  Dilip the leader was an inspiration to all leaders and that made the trip superb. What was the most inspirational moment of your trip? I felt a great warmth from the locals that we kept meeting along the way in the villages that we walked through in the trekking week. What did you think of your group leader? Dilip was amazing and so friendly and gave us so much of his knowledge and kept the group's spirits high on the rainiest days!
This was a fantastic trip with a wonderful team leader and support team.  Lots of variety, as much free time as you wanted, good food and excellent company.  What was the most inspirational moment of your trip? This is difficult as there were so many ...the sun cleared immediately after our arrival at the first camp site, after an afternoon of misty conditions.  We were able to see Kanchenjunga clearly that afternoon and at dawn the following day.Dillo's amazing Bollywood-style dancing at the end of trek celebration :-) cocktails/pink gin at the Windamere (sic) Hotel in Darjeeling.  Dilip managed to get us into the guests lounge, usually out of bounds for non-residents.the overnight train journey was surprisingly enjoyable, and the arrival in Calcutta in heavy rain was quite an experience.Sikkim was lovely! What did you think of your group leader? Dilip was an inspiration, and the group benefitted enormously from his leadership and superb organisational and team-leading skills.  He has established an impressive network of local people from the villages on the route, and we were welcomed warmly wherever we went.  His leadership style is very hands-on, and he himself greeted us every morning on trek with a cup of tea. He was constantly cheerful, despite the freak weather conditions we encountered on the trek, and was always looking for ways to make things more enjoyable for us all.  The chips and pakora were perfectly timed to lift our spirits after a day when misty conditions had obscured the mountain views that we'd all been looking forward to.  He was very good at solving all our problems, large and small - for example, when a few of us were queuing for the ladies loo in Sikkim, Dilip persuaded the restaurant owner to open the VIP toilets in the presidential suite for us.  His leadership ensured that we all had a very enjoyable holiday, despite freak weather conditions,  which were a side effect of the worst cyclone to hit the Bay of Bengal in 40 years. Do you have any advice for potential travellers? Take a good sleeping 4-season bag and the best mattress you can afford (or borrow).  It did get very cold at night on the high points of the trek.Don't hesitate to book if you're thinking of doing this trip - it's been the best holiday we've had for years.  Is there anything else you would like to add? Manu Lai is a great cook.  The support team was wonderful.  We were very sad to leave India and are already looking forward to our next trip.

Planning Tips for North Sikkim Travel

sikkim weather in march

Now for the key details to pull together your dream North Sikkim adventure. Use these planning tips when arranging logistics:

The Best Time to Visit North Sikkim

While North Sikkim impresses year-round, April-June and September-November have optimal weather. Spring showcases flowers and festivals, while the fall dry season promises clear mountain views. Book early during these peak seasons. Winters get very cold with some access challenges but boasts frozen delights.

Permits & Paperwork

Both Indian nationals and foreigners need special permits to enter North Sikkim due to its proximity to international borders. Most visitors arrange permit logistics through registered local tour agencies. Bring extra passport photos and copies, plus allow up to 10 days processing time when planning your North Sikkim travel.

Transport Logistics

Jeep safaris booked via travel agencies provide the only transport in and around North Sikkim, which lacks mainstream travel infrastructure. Prepare for bumpy rides when factoring North Sikkim’s winding mountain routes into trip timelines. Most travel between destinations happens in shared jeeps with locals and fellow travelers.

Hiring a local guide boosts safety, environmental stewardship, and cultural understanding when trekking, peak bagging, or exploring off-the-beaten paths. Guides are really very helpful when you are on North Sikkim travel as they ensure that you steer clear of any troubles on your trip. Experienced guides also handle permits and navigate language barriers. Reputable agencies like Himalayan Footprints pair visitors with knowledgeable guides for North Sikkim’s more ambitious adventures.

Respecting Local Culture & Environment

Sikkim’s rural communities and fragile high-altitude environment require thoughtful travel practices. Support locals by shopping handicrafts directly or staying in village homestays. Limit waste, stay on marked trails, and never remove stone cairns or prayer flags. This will make sure that your North Sikkim travel experience goes very smoothly and becomes a memorable one for you with no troubles. Together, we can preserve North Sikkim’s irreplaceable culture and pristine mountain beauty.

Travel Mistakes to Avoid in North Sikkim

sikkim in november

It’s also key to sidestep certain travel mistakes while enjoying hassle-free North Sikkim adventures. Heed these tips:

Embrace North Sikkim’s slower pace, building ample flexibility for canceled jeep rides or lengthy monastery visits. Overstuffing your North Sikkim itinerary causes unnecessary stress in trying to adhere to rushed timetables. Travel light and leave room for unexpected magic.

Avoid Altitude Sickness

North Sikkim’s high elevation can trigger serious altitude sickness without proper acclimatization. Strictly follow trek itineraries, allowing rest days before hitting lofty viewpoints. Hydrate frequently, limit exertion, and descend immediately if symptoms arise.

Don’t Disrespect Local Customs

Display cultural sensitivity by dressing modestly for temples and monasteries, receiving blessings respectfully, avoiding public intimacy, and heeding all photography rules. Also, abstain from smoking, as Sikkim enforces a statewide ban.

Don’t Litter

With no formal rubbish infrastructure, North Sikkim relies on visitors to practice zero-waste ethics by taking everything and bringing it back out. This keeps North Sikkim’s famous mountain wildernesses pristine. Travel prepared with reusable water bottles and containers.

Steer Clear of Wildlife

Refrain from feeding, touching, chasing, or engaging too closely with North Sikkim’s exotic birds and furry mountain critters. This protects both visitors and Sikkim’s vulnerable species. Simply observe wildlife respectfully from afar.

The Remote Allure of North Sikkim Travel

As this North Sikkim guide has laid out, adventures through these mystical mountains promise jaw-dropping beauty, cultural eye-openers, and travel memories stretching far beyond your photo reel. With sound preparation and respect for the environment, extra effort in reaching North Sikkim’s remote realms will pay back a hundred times over.

So what are you waiting for? Start planning your own epic travels exploring North Sikkim travel adventure! Let the remote allure of towering peaks, vivid flower meadows, steaming hot springs, and charming villages call you to venture beyond the beaten track on your next vacation.

Customer reviews.

At times, there is a huge difference between what they offer and what they provide. However, SikkimTourism.org kept its promise to us. They put forth a lot of effort to make our trip to Sikkim the finest one ever.

SIKKIMTOURISM.ORG assisted me in planning a trip for my family and me. I spoke with other tour guides and looked through numerous websites. But none could compare to Sikkim Tourism’s degree of professionalism.

Mr. ROHIT phoned me in response to my letter inquiry. He is a really helpful dude. I had a lot of concerns for him, such as the weather in Sikkim and if it was OK to bring my 2-year-old, and he patiently responded to all of them.

We were able to organise our journey to Gangtok, Tsomgo Lake, Baba Mandir, Nathu La, Yumthang Valley, Lachung, and Darjeeling as a result of his insightful ideas.

The dates of our journey were February 7–15 of this year. The itinerary provided by Sikkim Tourism, our travel guide, was fantastic and guaranteed that our vacation will be memorable.

We need drivers who had a thorough understanding of the roads because Sikkim is situated in a hilly area and has twisty roads. We received these from SikkimTourism.ORG, which helped us feel secure.

Eight days were spent travelling. From day 1 to day 8, the schedule included all travel arrangements, information on the vehicles, accommodations, and meals. The crew, in particular Mr. Rohit, kept in touch with us well.

The accommodation, meals, and transportation arrangements were all well-taken care of. What I appreciated most were the safe travel itinerary and the on-time cab drivers. Overall, our trip was enjoyable. Thanks, SikkimToursim.org group

Excellent lodging, outstanding transportation, and lovely memories to cherish. Because of their smooth services, I would heartily suggest SIKKIMTOURISM.ORG tourism. I really appreciate it. Bravo to ROHIT and the rest of the SIKKIM TOURISM.ORG team.

In April 2019, my family and I travelled to Sikkim and Darjeeling. We reserved our tour with SIKKIMTOURISM.ORG to make travel easier. I must say that the accommodations for travel, the mode of transportation, and how the trip was planned were all excellent.

Venkitesh Ramachandran

I recently book a trip in October with NatureWings after reading a lot of positive feedback especially their expertise in East Sikkim. Our plan was for 7N/8D covering North and East Sikkim. Through out my journey in North, every day i used to get calls from them inquiring about the travel comfort, stay etc. I was really surprised by that, but the joy did not last much once we started the East Sikkim trip. From handling of Permits, coordinating with driver, calling his friend to pass on all my details via whats app to get the permit on time was a real pain. This happened in-spite me providing all details on whats app and email at least 10 days prior to travel. On top of that when we reached Zuluk, the home stay guy said there was no communication given to them via phone or email about my stay. Luckily for us another family could not make it and we were allotted their room. Otherwise i would have to look for another place. Overall there were a bit of hick ups covering East as there was no coordinator like we had in South. For the price we are paying i would expect a much better service. Luckily the drivers were damn good and down to earth. From stay perceptive ... more

We just returned from the west Sikkim tour, packaged and arranged by ‘Naturewings’; route Gangtok – Kaluk - Pelling – Ravangla. Can’t wait to share few things here…the driver we got, was an experienced young locale chap, who knows the hills very well. He shared his little tips as a guide beyond just driving. Quality of the hotels were very high class. We got warm and comfortable rooms, along with the hot and fresh foods. Their hospitality touched our mind. The package was beyond our expectations within this price range. Overall, it was a life time experience for me and my family. We will look forward for more tours from ‘Naturewings’ in the future, for sure.

Recently went to West Sikkim - Ravangla, kaluk and Pelling through Naturewings. Thanks to excellent coordination by Sri Indrajeet Kar, the trip turned out to be a memorable one.The car provided was in nice shape and the driver very cooperative and amiable. All hotels/Resorts provided, especially the Mandarin Resort at Kaluk, afforded breathtaking view of Kanchenjunga along with warm hospitality and nice, hygienic food. The tour schedule, hotel vouchers, car details were intimated well in time beforehand and strictly followed. All in all a big thumbs up for Naturewings - Highly recommended.

West Sikkim Tour

We just returned from a West Sikkim Tour and the trip was a memorable one. It was our 4 Night 5 Days trip, covering Pelling in 2 Nights and Ravangla in 2 nights. In Pelling, we stayed in Crassula Ovata retreat in the Upper Pelling helipad area. The hotel is a new one with a mesmerizing view of Mount Kanchanjhungha from my bed. The location and ambiance of the hotel are too good, and we enjoyed every bit of the moments we stayed there. Honestly, we were in no mood to go out sightseeing as the hotel gives us the perfect ambiance of peacefulness and tranquillity. In Ravangla also, we got a beautiful hotel, Barfung Retreat. This beautiful resort with a good room and a breathtaking view of snow peaks from our room. In both the hotels, the food was also good, and our driver from Bagdogra to Bagdogra was helpful and jovial. We must thank NatureWings for offering us such a memorable trip and will go through them once again in the North East India tour.

We Traveled to Pelling, Ravangla and Kaluk during this year's puja vacation. Best place to have a great view of the peaks of the Kanchanjangha range of Himalayas. Just get up around 5:00 am in October and could see the golden snow-capped mountain peaks from the rising sun (because of fewer clouds, and the possibility of getting a clear view of snow-clad peaks). Peaceful Pelling is famous for its sightseeing points like Shingshore Bridge, Sky-Walk and Monastery. We stayed in Hotel Sikkim Aurora, close to the Helipad, and on the top of the town. Most of the rooms are mountain facing, can see the peaks from the bed as well as bathrooms. Just relax and enjoy the show. I strongly recommend a visit over this place for a couple of days (minimum). Overall the hotels, cars and foods arrangement made by NatureWings was satisfactory and within budget.

Pelling, West Sikkim Tour

Ankita Tiwari

We had traveled through NatureWings with a family from Ahmedabad. It was a well-organized trip. After 5 hours of tedious journey from Bagdogra Airport, we reached the destination. Our joy was getting double throughout the way step by step. We were overwhelmed by its natural beauty. It was some more than I expected. The rooms were booked well in advance and well-maintained hotels. Mr. Indrajit provided good support in guiding us as we were traveling with a 4-year-old kid. We had a wonderful trip to the chilling weather in December. Hipped up with fresh enthusiasm, the trip to Pelling - West Sikkim was filled with thrills and comfort. I was able to explore from classical enrichment of Sikkimese architecture to its wild green side of nature. In case you are traveling to Sikkim, I would always suggest you NATUREWINGS from Kolkata as it holds the best information in and around Sikkim.

North Sikkim Tour with Lachen Lachung

Our client testimonials.

Very good experience. Used their service for Bagdogra to Temi Tea Estate resort and South Sikkim sightseeing and Temi to Darjeeling during early May 2022. The cars provided were in top-notch condition and quite comfortable and most importantly clean. Mr Tapan and Mr Bhushan were very helpful, suggesting us quality and affordable eateries and also provided us with information on sightseeing areas. Not to mention, their excellent driving skills. Very much recommended and I'll surely use their service next time.

Arkadip Ghosh

We are a German couple who spend three great days in Namchi enjoying Tapans perfect service. One day, we had a sightseeing tour to all major places around Namchi. His driver Robin was a very friendly person and an excellent guide for us. He explained many interesting facts about culture, religion and local life to us. The car was extremely clean and comfortable. In the evening Tapan took us for an amazing dinner. He knows everything about the area. He even helped us with some ideas for our further trip in Sikkim. Tapan is a wonderful and very hospitable person and we can highly recommend his perfect service. We will definitely come back!

Daniela Matt

I did 8 days trip of Sikkim and in those 8 days the best experience I had while doing the road trip was with Trust The Local Team. They are courteous, professional and always ready to go extra mile to make your journey comfortable. Not once he lost patience and he was eager to show places and he was well informed. I was travelling with my wife and 5 year old kid and they took extra care to stop at right places for food / pit stops and his suggestions were quite good. The vehicles were super clean and the choice of music was matching my taste :). Travelling in Sikkim on road would be very tiring. However with the best driver to show you around and the clean vehicle would be blessing. I would recommend their service and you wouldn't be disappointed. Thank you guys.

Sriharsha Kandgal

Very good service. The car was good and very reasonably priced. The driver was very helpful. It was a nice experience during our 2 day say at South Sikkim. I recommend the services of this agency.

Manash Mahanta

Tapan is a very hospitable guy and an excellent guide. His vehicles are clean and comfortable. His drivers are very well mannered. We hired his services for 8 days and Deepas was our driver. In total, Amazing experience. They do the justice to the title "Trust the locals".

Raghu Manthangode

I have been using 'Trust the locals' cabs for the last 5 years. Extremely happy with the services. Tapan, the owner, is very helpful and goes out of his way to guide/ help tourists. Would highly recommended 'Trust the locals' to any one who is planning a trip to Sikkim/ Bhutan.

Manash Sarma

I have done Sikkim trip twice with Trust The Locals, primarily opted for the cab services. Both the trips were well executed. Drivers assigned to us were pretty good in handling Sikkim road conditions, knowledgeable and polite. They have good contacts with the hotels as well and may provide some good deals with the hotels of your choice.

The North Sikkim Travel Guide | Incredible India

With picturesque landscapes, surreal skies and snow capped mountain peaks, North Sikkim is a destination, the beauty of which cannot be described with words. The entire region is located in a close proximity with China’s Tibet autonomous region and thus is a protected area. The high altitude lakes, secluded villages, holy caves and serene valleys will leave you speechless at every twist and turn on the journey.

A winter morning in the village of Lachung in North Sikkim

While North Sikkim is a sought-after destination to experience a snowy vacation, a lot of travellers often face a lot of confusion on whether they can take their kids to North Sikkim or not, how to book their trip and where to get the permits from. I’d attempt to break down every possible detail about North Sikkim in this blog and share my personal experiences, with a hope that it’d come in handy when you plan a trip to North Sikkim.

How many days do you require to visit North Sikkim?

How can you book your trip to north sikkim and get necessary permits, how to plan for your trip to north sikkim – a step by step guide, gurudongmar lake, yumthang valley, 5  day north sikkim road trip itinerary, 7 day north sikkim road trip itinerary, best time to visit north sikkim, north sikkim trip faqs – answered, travel tips for visiting north sikkim.

The usual North Sikkim circuit is covered by tour operators on a 1N/2D or 2N/3D package. With that, you’d have to add two extra nights in Gangtok, as you cannot start your journey on the day of arrival or depart on the day of reaching back to Gangtok. The same applies if you wish to explore other parts of Sikkim before or after visiting North Sikkim.

In case you find a tour agent offering you a  customized trip including offbeat destinations of the area, you may opt to spend about five days in North Sikkim . Two additional nights in Gangtok to be added as usual.

It should be noted that North Sikkim is a Protected Area and parts of it falls under Restricted Area (Thangu, Gurudongmar Lake). One needs a Protected Area Permit to travel to North Sikkim which can be obtained only against Voter ID or Passport.

Please Note that Aadhar card, Driving license and Pan card are NOT ACCEPTED.

You can opt to take a shared package of either 1N/2D or 2N/3D which would cost about INR 1500 and INR 3000 per person, respectively. The costs may vary depending on the season and demand. These packages are inclusive of travel, accommodation and three meals, which is quite cheap for the experience that awaits you. The shared part is only about the vehicle where you may be allotted seats with other groups. The accommodations are private in twin or triple rooms.

If you’d want a vehicle only for yourself, the cost goes higher by about four times . The bigger your group is (six to ten), the cheaper the cost per person would be. But for instance, an exclusive package for 2N/3D for four people in an Innova would cost around INR 32,000 or more.

As you book your trip, the tour operator would ask for your documents (Voter ID/Passport + a couple of passport size photographs) and make arrangements for the necessary permits.

Prayer flags fluttering against the backdrop of the snow capped peaks in North Sikkim

Step 1 – Book your tickets to Bagdogra Airport/New Jalpaiguri Railway station . Upon arrival, you would have to reach Gangtok .

Step 2 – Book an accommodation in Gangtok for the day of your arrival and the night after reaching back to Gangtok.

Step 3 – You could start looking for tour operators online to book a package for North Sikkim but my personal experience would suggest you to make bookings in person as it cuts down the costs. There are plenty of tour agents in MG Marg area and across the entire city of Gangtok and you can enquire directly and book your trip. (For shared trips, the facilities of accommodations provided by all tour operators are same, so being choosy wouldn’t make a difference)

Step 4 – Book your package (either online or in person) and hand over the necessary documents required for permits.

Step 5 – If you have opted for a shared trip, make sure you reach the taxi stand early to grab the best seat. You’re good to go now.

What to see in North Sikkim

Bird's eye view of the village of Lachen

With a bumpy ride covering 121 kms from Gangtok , it could take anywhere between 6-8 hours to reach Lachen, depending on the road conditions. Situated at the height of 9000 ft, Lachen is a quaint village, secluded on a mountain top. You could hike up to Lachen Monastery , one of the oldest monasteries of Sikkim or take a walk along an unknown trail. The best way to explore this village is to go by foot and expect nothing. It is the generous smiles on the faces of the locals and a mesmerizing sunset that will remain etched in your memory.

Gurudongmar lake happens to be the major highlight of North Sikkim. This gorgeous lake, situated at 17,800 ft and surrounded by snow clad peaks of the Himalayan ranges is a treat to the eye. The sun rays on the sparkling clean water and colourful prayer flags fluttering all around the lake, makes it look absolutely dreamy.

A surreal view of Gurudongmar Lake in the month of April

The lake is also considered holy by the locals. According to legends, there used to be no source of water in the area as the lake remained frozen throughout the year. Locals prayed to Guru Padmasambhava and he touched the lake, which now never freezes even during winters.

People who have any difficulty with breathing should avoid visiting this place as oxygen level goes down and it’s often difficult to breathe. The journey to Gurudongmar Lake starts somewhere around 4 AM from Lachen and travellers are expected to head back to Lachen before 10 AM as the weather conditions start to become rough post 10 AM.

Wooden houses in Lachung that have been converted into homestays

The other village which serves as the base to proceed towards other destinations in North Sikkim is Lachung. It’s a quiet and serene village from where you can head to Yumthang Valley, Zero Point and Katao. You’d mostly be spending your evenings and nights in Lachung after a day’s trip to the above mentioned places. The laid back life of Lachung is what makes it special. The fire woods stored at the entrance of every house, huts offering magi, tea and local alcohol and the snow covered peaks serving as a backdrop to this quaint village, altogether makes the village appear as a wonderland.

The calming sight of Yumthang Valley

Yumthang Valley, also known as a ‘valley of flowers’ is a paradise in all sense. Also home to Shingba Rhododendron Sanctuary , this breathtaking valley, on an elevation of 11,800 ft , changes colours every season – from various shades of rhododendrons making the valley look like an artist’s colour palette in Spring to completely white with snow during winters. A visit to this unique valley is a must on your trip to North Sikkim.

Literally marking the end of roads, zero point is a treat to the eyes

Yumesamdong , commonly known as Zero Point is basically a point where the roads end. This place has nothing in specific but the vibe of the place and the sight of Teesta river curving between the mountain ranges is enough to leave you in awe of nature’s beauty. Usually, Zero Point is not included in a package and one may pay the driver an extra amount of INR 2000 approximately (for an entire vehicle consisting 10 people) to take them to Zero Point if time permits.

The beautiful snow capped peaks of Mt. Katao is known as Switzerland of India for all good reasons.

Katao, 28 kms away from Lachung is one of the most scenic places to be visited in North Sikkim. One would have to start their journey from Lachung to reach Katao, a heavily guarded area because of the closeness to Indo-China border . This spot is often termed as Switzerland of India because of its unparalleled beauty. There are a plenty of activities like snowboarding, skiing, snow tubing and stone grinding that awaits in Katao for adventure seekers.

Dzongu, an offbeat destination in North Sikkim is not yet known to many.It is one of the hidden gems of Sikkim , that you should definitely have on your Sikkim Travel Bucket List. The region falls under the Kanchenjunga Biosphere Reserve and is rich in medicinal plants and herbs. Dzongu is inhabited by the Lepchas, who believe to have descended from the mountains.

The experience of watching sunrise from Dzongu is incomparable. The snow capped peaks of Kanchendzonga appears to be at a stone’s throw away. You may even take a hike to the river bed at Passingdang, visit the natural Hot spring and spend some time with the local people while sipping on millet beer, made in almost every household. The charm of the place lies in the warmth provided to the guests by the local people. You’d surely come back with fascinating stories after a visit to Dzongu.

North Sikkim Travel Itinerary

If you go by the shared trips, a 2N/3D package is what will suit you best. The itinerary would roughly look like this:

Day 1: Arrive at Bagdogra/New Jalpaiguri and head to Gangtok. Spend the evening in Gangtok and stroll around in MG Marg.

Day 2: Start from Gangtok and reach Lachen. Explore Lachen monastery and rest in the evening.

Day 3: An early morning drive to Gurudongmar Lake and return to Lachen. Transfer to Lachung in late afternoon and spend the night in Lachung.

Day 4: Explore Yumthang Valley and Zero Point and return to Lachung. Post lunch, head back to Gangtok.

Day 5: Leave for Bagdogra/New Jalpaiguri early in the morning. Your flight/train should be scheduled post 3 PM.

If you can manage to find a customized trip or an exclusive trip , you may go by the following itinerary:

Day 3: Explore Yumthang Valley and Zero Point (Katao could be an alternative to these two places) and return to Lachung. Spend the night in Lachung.

Day 4: Drive to Dzongu, an offbeat destination in North Sikkim and soak the vibe of the village, free from the regular crowd.

Day 5: Spend the day in Dzongu to explore the village.

Day 6: Leave for Gantok from Dzongu. Reach by 12 PM to have half a day to explore Gangtok. Visit the restaurants/pubs in Gangtok.

Day 7: Leave for Bagdogra/New Jalpaiguri early in the morning. Your flight/train should be scheduled post 3 PM.

The best time to visit North Sikkim is between October-November and March-April . However, I’d personally recommend the season of spring i.e. mid March onward till end of April as Yumthang Valley blooms with flowers, making it look heavenly.

In the winter and monsoon months, the roads are usually blocked due to heave snow or rainfall thus permits are not issued.

You could also plan your trip during the time when Pang Lhabsol festival happens in North Sikkim. It is a vibrant festival held in reverence to the guardian deity Mt. Kanchendzonga. The festival usually takes place in the month of September.

Ans. A Protected Area Permit is required to travel to North Sikkim which is taken care of by the tour operator through whom you’ve booked your trip.

Q. Can I book my accommodation myself in North Sikkim?

Ans. Not really. The packages offered by tour operators are inclusive of travel+accommodation+meals. The accommodations in North Sikkim are anyway basic, with similar amenities in all the places. But if you book an exclusive/luxury package, of course the accommodation gets upgraded to a better one.

Ans. No. The network is really poor in North Sikkim. Calls can be made once in a while but do not expect internet to work.

North Sikkim is a completely plastic free zone so make sure you dispose all plastic packets/bottles before you leave for North Sikkim.

Always be prepared of the cold. The temperate often reaches minus degrees making it unbearable

While traveling to Gurudongmar lake, carry some munchies. It would help you to not run out of breath.

Avoid taking senior citizens to North Sikkim. The terrains are rough and the ride is very tiring.

Children below 10 years of age are not granted permits to travel to North Sikkim.

Carry enough cash while starting your journey from Gangtok. You would not find any ATM on the way or in North Sikkim, except for the only one populated place Mangan, the entry point to North Sikkim.

Best Itinerary for North Sikkim – How to Plan your Trip

Are you planning to visit North Sikkim in the near future? Have you been wondering how to plan your journey and make the best out of your time and money? In this post, I will share the best itinerary for North Sikkim and hopefully, after reading this post, you will have an answer to your questions. If you have any further questions, please feel free to ask in the comments section towards the bottom of this page.

North Sikkim is nothing but the northern part of the northeastern state of Sikkim. This is often called as ‘A Trip to Gurudongmar’, although this is not only about Gurudongmar. Since Gurudongmar is more remarkable among all of the places in North Sikkim, probably people like to call it so. It is among the highest lakes in the world and definitely the most beautiful ones.

The start and end point for this trip will be Siliguri, a town in West Bengal. You can reach Siliguri via flight (Flight to Bagdogra airport) or Train (Train to New Jalpaiguri Jn. or Siliguri Jn) or else own vehicle (motorcycle/ car). Here are some best plans for your trip.

Best Itinerary for North Sikkim

I will suggest itineraries for 4, 5, and 6 days. This is the minimum time that you will need for a trip here. If you had more days in hand, you can prolong your stay at any of the mentioned places.

North Sikkim Itinerary for 6 Days

If you are not in a hurry or not worried about taking leaves from your daily hectic lives then this plan is for you. You can explore the region entirely and feel the real beauty of this harsh yet romantic part of Sikkim. A trip here can really help you rejuvenate yourself and get some calm and peace for a few days.

It is among the most serene places in all of India with nature’s freshness at its best. Spending a few days in the lap of Mother Nature in North Sikkim will surely help you prepare to better deal with the stress of our day to day lives.

Day 1: Siliguri to Gangtok

One fine morning, you will start your journey towards Gangtok from Siliguri. The trip will be around 4 hours and 125 kilometers long. You will enjoy the journey from the plains of Bengal to the mountains of Sikkim once you cross the Sevoke road.

Upon reaching Gangtok, check into a hotel, freshen up, and have your lunch. There are plenty of eateries offering all kinds of food at MG marg. Enjoy a romantic walk and photo-session at MG Road in the evening. You can also buy some Sikkim special mementos or gift items here.

Day 2: Gangtok to Lachen

Congratulation. This will be your first morning in the mountains on this trip. Get ready to spend some amazing time for the next few days.

Today’s destination will be Lachen, a small hamlet by Lachen Chu (Chu means Mountain River in local language). It is located at a distance of 110 kilometers from Gangtok.

10 kilometers before reaching Mangan, the treacherous road will start and this is where you will have to be a little careful. The entire journey will take around 4 hours 15 minutes. You can enjoy the continuous roar of Lachen Chu in the silence of nature.

You can also visit the beautiful Lachen Monastery on the same afternoon.

Day 3: Chopta Valley viewpoint, Gurudongmar Lake and Kalapatthar

After having a warm sleep under a comfortable blanket on a chilly cold night, you will wake up to a beautiful morning of North Sikkim. The plan for today is to spend the day sightseeing. The total distance covered will be close to 155 kilometers and will easily take you about 7 to 8 hours. So an early start is highly recommended.

Leave in the early morning and ride/ drive to Chopta valley viewpoint for a beautiful sunrise. From there, you will head to Kalapatthar; the harsh and dry black mountain full of white snow.

After crossing several check posts you will reach the 15000 cafe, the army canteen, and the last check-post prior to reaching Gurudongmar. Here, you must try Momos/ Samosa/ Sandwich and free coffee provided by the Indian Army. After filling your souls with the beauty of Gurudongmar Lake, it’s time to get back to your hotel in Lachen.

Day 4: Lachen to Katao and Return to Lachung

After a long and tiring journey of the previous day, today will be a little relaxing. You will cover about 95 kilometers in a travel time of 3 to 4 hours. Hence you can start in a leisurely manner in the late morning.

First, head towards Katao. You won’t be permitted to go ahead of base-camp but can enjoy the view with a steaming hot cup of tea; provided by our beloved Indian Army. After appreciating the snow-filled mountains for some time, reach Lachung to rest for the day.

Day 5: Yumthang, Zero Point and Dzongu valley

Your travel time today will be about 5-6 hours, covering a distance of 160 kilometers. I will advise an early start on this day as well so you have enough time for sightseeing.

You will first drive to the Lachung monastery followed by Yumthang valley. A small market on the banks of Yumthang River and surrounded by mountains will mesmerize you with its serene beauty.

The next destination will be Yumesamdong, which is commonly known as the zero point. Once you have finished up with playing in the snow, head back to reach Dzongu valley. This is a mountain forest surrounded by deep silence.

Day 6: Dzongu Valley to Siliguri

The travelers may not want to get back to their daily lives with a heavy heart but this is something we all must do for our next adventure. Hence, breaking the silence of the mountain forests, your vehicle will be waiting to take you back to Siliguri. Since this is the last day of the trip you can have multiple pit stops. The distance covered will be 150 kilometers in about 5 – 6 hours, depending on your speed and breaks.

North Sikkim Itinerary for 5 Days

This itinerary will give you an idea of a compact and relatively shorter plan for North Sikkim Trip. Unlike the previous one, this is a pretty straight forward route. If you have a tight schedule but wish to cover all major tourist destinations, then this is the plan for you. The journey will maintain a good ratio of being long as well as relaxed.

Day 1: Siliguri to Gangtok/ Mangan

You will start the journey from Siliguri for Mangan in the morning. This will take around 4 hours 30 minutes, covering 145 kilometers approximately. Or you can also drive to Gangtok which is 125 kilometers from Siliguri and will take you around 3 hours 45 minutes.

The road won’t be smooth but can be called good as compared to other mountain roads. It will remain so until almost 10 kilometers before Mangan. This last but treacherous 10 kilometers long stretch will take you good 40-45 minutes to cover.

Once you reach Mangan, check into a hotel and be prepared for an early morning view of Kanchenjunga, if the weather favored you. Have good food either at your hotel or outside and call it a day.

Day 2: Gangtok/ Mangan to Katao and Back to Lachung

The destination for Day 2 will be Lachung. If you stayed at Gangtok, then the journey will be 152 kilometers long. But if you stayed at Mangan, then you will travel only about 100 kilometers in total.

You will start early (7-8 am) for Yumthang and Yumesamdong (Zero Point). You will need to head towards Yumthang valley via Lachung monastery on the left of a gate where ‘Welcome to Lachung’ will be written.

With a cup of hot tea/coffee, you can appreciate the breathtaking view of Youmthang River surrounded by mountains.

Resuming the journey you will reach snow-covered Yumesamdong. The clock will be ticking towards the afternoon to remind you of your return journey to the hotel in Lachung.

Day 3: Lachung to Yumthang, Zero Point, and Thangu Valley

Soon after an early start go down a kilometer or more from your hotel and turn left for Katao check-post. You won’t be allowed to go to the top beyond base-camp but can enjoy the view with steaming hot tea provided by our beloved Indian Army.

Once you have had your share of the amazing view, head towards Thangu valley to call it a day. Lachen river will mesmerize you during the whole journey from Lachen to Thangu. Remember the stay can be tough here due to freezing cold weather and low oxygen levels at high altitude.

The estimated time of travel will be around 6 hours 20 mins for this day, covering a total of almost 185 kilometers.

Day 4: Thangu to Chopta Valley viewpoint, Gurudongmar Lake, Singhik

You must start early on this day, probably by 5 AM, for an awesome sunrise view at Chopta valley viewpoint. After spending an hour or so, drive back on the extremely bad road to mighty Gurudongmar.

Don’t forget to have breakfast at Cafe 15000 (the Indian Army canteen) before/ after submitting permits on the check-post.

With the happiness of success to reach the 2nd highest lake in the world, you will need to be prepared for the return journey to Singhik, an extreme offbeat place of this route.

The journey will be tough and tiring today as it will take around 7 hours, covering 153 kilometers. I say tiring because of the bad roads that you will travel on this day.

Day 5: Singhik to Siliguri

After a tiring journey of the previous day, this is the day to allow yourself to feel Sikkim’s natural beauty as much as you can. The journey will just be 145 kilometers and 5 hours long so you have the entire day to yourself.

Start at your own convenience from the hotel in Singhik, dry at a relaxed pace, take as many breaks as you want, and reach back to Siliguri.

North Sikkim Itinerary for 4 Days

This is the shortest itinerary for North Sikkim where you will miss some small yet mesmerizing spots but will cover the famous and popular ones. For a trip to North Sikkim, 4 days is what you will need at the least. Any less than this, and you are merely touching the place and coming back.

If you are very short on time but would like to have an adventure to the world’s 2nd highest lake and visit some of the most known tourist destinations of Sikkim, then you should go with this plan.

Please note that if you are not habituated with a long journey, bad roads, in mountains or not comfortable at high altitude, then this plan is not recommended for you.

Day 1: Siliguri to Mangan

This day will be the same as I explained in the 5 Days Itinerary. The only point I would like to add is that you must start early if you only had 4 days.

Day 2: Yumthang, Zero Point, Lachung

This day will also be the same as explained in 5 days plan. Point to add here is that if you had time while returning from Zero Point, you can visit Katao on the same day; then you can come back to the hotel in Lachung.

Day 3: Lachung to Gurudongmar Lake and back to Lachen

This day will be super tiring for you as you have to travel for almost 8 hours, covering about 180 kilometers. On top of it, you will also be at a high altitude, when you are visiting Gurudongmar Lake.

You should start by 5 am from the hotel in Lachung and reach Cafe 15000 via Lachen and Thangu valley. After stamping your permits, head towards your ultimate destination. Don’t forget to carry some chocolates and dry foods which will be needed in the morning; as you would not have time for breakfast when your start and it will take you a while before you get to Cafe.

Day 4: Lachen to Siliguri

If you don’t have a train or flight to catch on the same evening from Siliguri, then only you can start your return journey in a leisurely manner. The driving time to Siliguri from Lachen is around 6 hours 30 minutes, covering about 200 kilometers. But since you will be entering a town in plains, you can reach late at night as well. So drive at a relaxed pace, soak in the beauty of the mountains, and have a great time.

Best time to visit North Sikkim

Being a travel enthusiast, I like to explore my favorite places around the year. In different seasons mountains can make you speechless in a different manner.

North Sikkim is one of those places where a trip is restricted with travel permits. But, except for the heavy monsoon season, you can visit here any time of the year. Even the availability of permits depends on the weather.

February – March

According to me, these two months are the best time to visit North Sikkim. You will get plenty of snow with super cold weather which North Sikkim is known for. Some places will welcome you with Rhododendron. In short, the view will be superb.

April – Mid June

These months are the comfortable ones if we talk in terms of the temperature. It is not going to be too cold and with the spring season on, it is a great time to plan a trip with your family.

The monsoon season here starts from June and stays well until September. In July and August, landslides caused by incessant rains become a common sight. It is not a safe time to be visiting anywhere in the hills for that matter. It can rain anytime anywhere and sometimes for days at a stretch.

Mid September-November

This is another best time to explore North Sikkim. This is the time of the autumn season and you will find a magical golden color in the valleys everywhere. The temperature will be on the moderate side. The weather mostly will stay clear and you will get perfect views of the mountain ranges all around.

In November you can witness snowfall as well if the luck favored you.

December-January

The months of December and January can be considered as the toughest months to visit North Sikkim. Still, adventurous junkies like motorcycle enthusiasts or an adventurer with a 4 WD can attempt this journey.

At this time, there is always a high chance of road blockage due to heavy snow. Permits may also be denied if the place was deemed as unsafe to visit. In these months, traveling to North Sikkim mostly depends on your luck.

The weather is going to be extremely cold so you should be prepared for that. If you want to see snowfall, then this can be a good time to visit.

Permits for North Sikkim

Being an Indo-China border state, Sikkim needs permits for Civilians to travel through most of the places within. The permits can only be issued in an offline manner from Gangtok or Mangan DC office.

Hence, readers please beware that there are no online permits North Sikkim till now. Also, the permits are different for foreigners and Indian Citizens.

Permits for Indian Citizens

Indian Citizens will be required to obtain restricted area permits beyond Singhik. It means that you should have permits in hand before you leave Mangan. You should keep the original as well as 6 – 7 photocopies.

These permits can be arranged by the hotel you are staying in at Gangtok or Mangan. If you have rented a vehicle, you can ask your driver to arrange it on a prior basis.

If you have a day in hand at Gangtok, you can arrange it by yourself as well but frankly, it would be a bit hectic. It would be a wise decision to spend 700/800 on the permit agent and save yourself the time and the hassle.

In order to get the permit, you will need to submit copies of your ID and address proofs (DL, voter cards, passports, etc) and 3 or 4 passport sized photographs. If you are coming by your own vehicle, photocopies of all updated docs of your vehicle have to be submitted. You can also be asked to show the originals in case you are obtaining the permits on your own.

Permits for Foreign Nationals

Foreigners will have to obtain ILP for Sikkim along with restricted area permits. This can be arranged by registered travel agents of Sikkim tourism.

The sad news is that even if you have the restricted area permits, you won’t be allowed to visit Gurudongmar Lake; since it is very close to the Indo-China border.

Foreign nationals are only allowed till Thangu valley, Chopta valley, and zero point on the other side.  The required docs will be obviously the passport with a valid visa.

Places to stay and Eat At

You don’t have to worry about your stay at all. Multiple hotels/ homestays are available all around the North Sikkim with different types of amenities, according to your choices and pocket.

Please note that in the remote and distant areas, the accommodation is basic but comfortable enough. You should also not expect a luxurious stay everywhere you go.

A few lodging options are mentioned below based on the towns or hamlets. All the hotels/ home-stays will offer you lodging with food. It’s your choice which plan (AP/ MAP) you want to opt for.

Hotels in Gangtok

Being the capital of Sikkim, it can offer you plenty of lodging options. Some are super luxurious too. The best place to stay here is around MG Marg as everything you want will be available here.

If you want to stay away from the crowd and a little in silence, you can try at places like Baluwakhani or Bojoghari, etc.

If you are a foodie or alcohol lover, you have plenty of options here to satisfy your need. You can get a few pubs with a good musical environment or can try Tibetan food in ‘Taste of Tibet’.

Hotels in Mangan

The sub-divisional town of North Sikkim won’t offer you many options for stay. A few lodges are available here with a very basic and moderate level of facilities.

You can’t find any big marketplace here like Gangtok but shops selling all kinds of day to day commodities are easy to find. In terms of food as well, there aren’t many options to explore and you will be best off eating at your hotel only.

Hotels in Dzongu

It is a quaint little village in Mangan outskirts, surrounded by the hills and the forest. There are only two homestays here that will give you the pure feeling of staying within nature, far away from artificiality.

Unknown birds and animal sound will accompany you the whole night and wake you up in the morning.

Hotels in Singhik

This is another small hamlet near Mangan, offering you very few homestays to spend your nights in real nature. There is nothing man-made here other than the road and a few wooden houses. The rest is all pure nature. Trying to finding a restaurant in these two places (Dzongu and Singhik) will be a waste of time. You will stay and eat at your homestay only.

Hotels in Lachen

Despite being a mountain village, this place has a significant number of hotels and homestays, offering different kinds of amenities under different price tags.

But rather than staying at a big hotel, I will recommend staying at a guest house somewhere close to Lachen River.

Hotels in Lachung

This is another beautiful small village that has a few hotels. This village’s beauty can’t be expressed in words. There is also a small market here where you can buy some souvenirs.

If you want to taste some local alcohol, don’t forget to try Chang (locally brewed wine) in any of these hamlets. You should have a word with your caretaker or homestay owner for Chang and they can arrange it for you.

Hotels in Thangu Valley

This is the last place before reaching Gurudongmar Lake. It is also the highest place to stay on the entire route at an altitude of 13000 ft.

There are a few homestays available here but just very basic ones. Staying in Thangu Valley will give you the feeling of a place far away from modern civilization. No proper electricity, drinking water from melting snow, or a nearby waterfall is what Thangu Valley is all about.

There are no restaurants here either. You will have to eat at your homestay only. But it is a perfect place to forget all chaos and drown yourself in peace and serenity.

Hotels in Chungthang

This is the place where two roads (towards Lachung and towards Lachen) get divided from the highway. There is also a Gurudwara here known as Chungthang Gurudwara.

It is about 30 kilometers ahead of Mangan and has a few homestays that you can stay in.

North Sikkim Trip Cost

Here comes the most important part of this blog. How much do we have to spend on the North Sikkim trip? Since there are multiple itineraries, the cost also will be different which I will try to simplify.

For example, we will be counting the total cost for two people. If you have a big group of 4-6 people, you will be spending a lesser amount each as the vehicle and permit cost will be shared.

The following cost is also measured with a rented vehicle. If you are coming on your own vehicle, deduct that one and add the fuel cost as per mileage and the total distance mentioned in the itinerary part.

You can also get the tour packages from various travel agents which you can compare with the following rates. Please also note that permits from Mangan will cost you significantly less than Gangtok (Rs. 200/300 instead of Rs. 600/700)

  • Food and lodging for 5 nights: 3000*5 = 15000 rs.
  • Permit cost: Rs. 600
  • Vehicle rent (SUV car from Siliguri to Siliguri): Rs. 24,000
  • 1st-day Breakfast and Lunch cost on the way to Gangtok/ Mangan: Rs. 600
  • Last day Lunch and snacks cost on the way to Siliguri: Rs. 500
  • Miscellaneous cost (like medicines, rent of snow boots, or gloves in case of emergency): Rs. 1000
