The 15 Best Tour Operators in 2022

These are the companies Travel + Leisure readers trust to provide them with travel expertise and memorable experiences.

the best tour operators website

Note: If you’re looking for our most recent recommendations, check out the 2023 list of our favorite tour operators .

When it comes to an itinerary, Travel + Leisure readers want more than a string of photo opportunities — and the right tour operator makes all the difference in creating a trip of a lifetime versus one that simply checks off a list of sights. This year, our readers were especially drawn to companies that utilize local expertise and experience to thoughtfully design trips that will entertain as well as inspire.

Every year for our World's Best Awards survey , T+L asks readers to weigh in on travel experiences around the globe — to share their opinions on the top hotels, resorts, cities, islands, cruise ships, spas, airlines, and more. Readers rated tour operators and safari outfitters based on their staff and guides, itineraries and destinations, activities, accommodations, food, and overall value.

The top picks were noted for their deep knowledge of destinations and guides who "go the extra mile." One reader who has been traveling for more than five decades said a trip with Classic Journeys (No. 2) was the "very best" they had experienced. Others noted attention to pandemic safety details, while one who went to Norway was charmed by a "wonderful surprise dinner in Bergen out on the water that was fantastic."

Tour operators that seamlessly navigated the logistics of a trip also came out on top. Quasar Expeditions (No. 9) was noted "for really planning out every detail" so that "all you have to do is show up and have a great time." Meanwhile, of TCS World Travel (No. 10), a guest said: "You never lift a finger and just spend your time actually exploring the destination." They even added that they "learned so much" along the way.

Among the five companies on this year's list that weren't on last year's were two women-only tour operators that cater to travelers of all ages. AdventureWomen (No. 14) has multiday tours designed by women from Bhutan to Yellowstone National Park, while Explorer Chick (No. 15) has everything from day trips — like glassblowing in Baltimore and cave rappelling in St. Louis — to full itineraries in Machu Picchu and the Galápagos. One reader said her Everest Base Camp trip with AdventureWomen was filled with "like-minded women" who "bonded so well," while another said she felt it was a "safe tour group for women."

No matter which tour they chose, readers were most taken by the people they met along the way, as one said of Trek Travel (No. 13): "By the end of the trip, a group of strangers felt like longtime friends." Find out which other companies round out the list of the best tour operators below.

1. DuVine Cycling + Adventure Co.

A tour with DuVine goes far beyond just riding a bike — it's a way to really see the character of a destination. Case in point: even those who say they're not necessarily cycling fans have been converted. That's part of what helped the tour operator — which runs trips in Europe, the U.S., Latin America, and Africa — skyrocket from No. 14 last year to this year's top spot. Its "top-notch biking equipment" and "challenging but doable itineraries" didn't hurt either. One reader was especially taken by a guide picking figs off of a local tree in Puglia for an extra energy boost during a tough climb, as well as another guide singing to the group after dinner. As another reader put it simply: "They exceed your expectations."

Intrepid Travel : Best Tour Company Overall

Interpid Travel

When you imagine travel tours, you may picture massive group tours and a bus packed with 50 noisy, gawking tourists.

That’s not what you get with Intrepid Travel . This company specializes in adventurous and immersive small group tours with an average of 10 people.

Operating on all seven continents, Intrepid offers a huge range of trip types to fit any traveler. You can choose biking tours across New Zealand, river cruises in Europe, trekking in the Himalayas, or wildlife safaris in the Serengeti. There are options for all-female adventures, family expeditions, active trips for adventure travelers, or trips catering specifically to 18-29 year olds.

If you don’t want to spend the trip of a lifetime sitting on your butt looking out a bus window, Intrepid Travel is for you. Their group trips are designed to fully immerse you in the culture and beauty of a new place. Here are two examples of what you’ll get from Intrepid Travel:

With the Alaska: Hike, Bike, & Kayak tour, you are led by an expert guide on a range of active adventures through some of Alaska’s best scenery and national parks. You’ll go sea kayaking, cycle along the rugged Alaskan coast, and hike through Denali National Park.

If you’re looking for more of a cultural experience, the Premium Sri Lanka tour is an incredible journey through the culture, history, food, and wildlife of this island. You’ll explore ancient temples, eat incredible food with locals, and search for leopards in the country’s wildlife preserves.

One last perk: Intrepid Travel is a Certified B-Corp, meaning they are dedicated to doing good in the world. They donate to worldwide relief causes and offset the carbon footprint of every trip they operate.

G Adventures : Best Small Group Tour Company

G Adventures Logo

If you’re looking for small group tours, G Adventures is one of the best in the category. Just like with Intrepid, their tour groups average 10 people, so, with G Adventures, you won’t have to deal with being part of a massive hoard of tourists.

So what sets G Adventures apart? Unlike many tour operators, they focus on helping you get exactly the experience you’re looking for instead of packing every day with a rigid schedule. Every trip offers a wide range of optional activities that you can pick and choose from to personalize your experience. Plus, you can opt for more free time to explore or hang out on your own.

I also love that G Adventures hires all local guides. They put a lot of emphasis on their guides, even calling them CEOs (chief experience officers). That means you get local, insider expertise on your trip. Your tour director will speak the local language, know the best spots to eat, and fully understand the culture.

If you’re looking for big luxurious hotels and resorts, G Adventures probably isn’t for you. Instead of going to the big chain hotels, G Adventures uses locally owned and operated lodgings.

This has two benefits. First, you get a much more authentic local experience. Big hotel chains don’t have the same charm and character as a true local hotel. Second, your money will go toward benefiting the local economy rather than some giant corporation. That’s a big win for G Adventures in my book.

Get Your Guide : Best for Day Tours

Get Your Guide

You may not need or want a fully guided multi-day group tour, But sometimes it’s nice to have the guidance of a local expert for a truly unique experience that you couldn’t get otherwise. Choosing day tours is a great way to get the benefits of guided group tours without being stuck with a tour group for your entire trip.

Get Your Guide is my favorite resource for finding amazing day tours, entry tickets, and other travel experiences. It’s perfect for more independent travelers who can manage the details of their own trip, but are looking for shorter guided tours.

How does it work? Get Your Guide is essentially an online marketplace where you can search for and reserve tours, museum passes, adventure activities, and more.

For example, let’s say you’re planning a trip to Sweden. On Get Your Guide, you could book a dog sled adventure to see the northern lights, a day cruise on an icebreaker ship, a “ghost-walk” historical tour of Old Stockholm, and a guided ice climbing excursion.

I’m already getting excited about that trip.

Go Ahead Tours : Best Tour Company for Solo Travelers

Go Ahead Tours

Solo travel can be a bit intimidating, especially if you don’t have a lot of travel experience. I’ve found that group tours can be a great way to ease some of the stress and make it easier to enjoy your trip as a solo traveler.

Go Ahead Tours is one of the best tour companies that specializes in trips for solo travelers. With their solo trips, you always get a private room at no extra cost, and the other travelers in your tour group will also be solo—so you don’t end up as the awkward 17th wheel in someone else’s family vacation. As a solo traveler with Go Ahead Tours, you get all the benefits and security of a group trip, and you’ll meet other amazing people traveling the world on their own.

Go Ahead Tours focuses on small group itineraries in tour destinations around the globe, from popular destinations to locations off the beaten path. Want a food-centric trip across Italy? Check. Want to visit South America and hike to Machu Picchu? Check. How about a wildlife safari in Kenya? Yep, they’ve got that. Go Ahead Tours offers the best group tours for solo travelers, and you may even make some new friends on the way.

Adventures by Disney : Best Tour Company for Families

Adventures By Disney

Family travel can seem complicated, especially if you have younger kids. Group tours can help simplify planning the dream trip, but tour operators often plan trips focused on adults, so younger travelers may get bored quickly.

Adventures by Disney is one of the few group travel companies that specialize in family-oriented trips and tours, from South America to Scandinavia. Disney Vacations designs their group trips to have something for everyone: wine tastings for the adults, adventure scavenger hunts for the kids, and sights and experiences that will engage your entire family.

Disney Adventures trips are a bit pricier than many other group travel companies, so not all families will be able to afford them. However, if you can make it work with your budget, your family will get an amazing experience that you just won’t find from more mainstream travel.

Trafalgar : Best Tour Company for Seniors

Trafalgar is one of the biggest (and best) group travel companies in the world. They offer hundreds of international trips to popular destinations around the globe.

Trafalgar’s guided tours are great for travelers of all age groups, but they cater particularly to senior travelers. The majority of Trafalgar guests are over 50. It’s also great for family tours to get grandparents and grandkids spending quality time together.

If you’re looking for highly active itineraries with adventure activities packed in, Trafalgar may not be the best for you. They focus more on cultural immersion, history, architecture, and local cuisine. Trafalgar is a great choice if you want to take a deep dive into the essence of your destination.

You can count on having a tour leader who is an expert in the local culture and history, and you will come home with tons of new knowledge.

Trafalgar focuses primarily on land-based tours, but they also offer a range of cruise vacations if you want to travel by sea.

Hotel stays, meals, transportation to/from the airport, and all the logistics are all arranged for you. You can even add on flights, extra hotel nights, and travel insurance so you don’t have to worry about any additional complications for your trip.

Tauck : Best Tour Company for Europe

Tauck

Tauck is another big name in group tours that operates on all seven continents. While they have guided tours all around the globe, Tauck is an especially good choice if you’re looking for a group tour in Europe.

It’s easy to go to European cities, see the major tourist sites, and head home without really diving deep into the culture and spirit of the place. My favorite thing about Tauck is that their European tours are designed to give you more than just the standard tourist experience. Their Yellow Roads of Europe tours take you off the beaten path for a truly unique European experience.

Every Tauck tour pairs you with handpicked expert local guides who will help fully immerse you in the experience.

Tauck offers both river cruises and land-based group tours. If you want a unique European experience, imagine cruising through Western Europe along the Seine.

Insight Vacations : Best Tour Company for Italy

Insight Vacations

Almost every traveler dreams of a bucket list trip to Italy. What’s not to love? Amazing food, amazing sights, amazing culture, Italy has it all.

If you’re looking for the best guided tours in Italy, I highly recommend Insight Vacations . Insight offers tours all over the world, but their Italy tours are especially good. Whether you want to see the major sights, learn to live like a local, or sample the best food from around the country (or all of the above!) they’ve got tours for you.

As an example, you could choose their Best of Italy Tour for your next trip. This 11-day tour includes stays in Rome, Florence, Venice, and more. You’ll learn from local artisans, eat farm-to-table meals on the foothills of Mount Vesuvius, and get a VIP tour of the Vatican (including areas normally off-limits to visitors).

Insight’s tours are all led by local tour guides who speak the language and have in-depth knowledge of the culture and history of each site you visit.

If you’re traveling with a group of 10 or more people, Insight Vacations can also put together custom itineraries specifically for your group.

CIE Tours : Best Tour Company for Ireland and Scotland

CIE Tours

If you’re into history, stunning scenery, charming towns, or good times at the pub, you would probably love touring Ireland and Scotland. CIE Tours is technically based in the US, but it’s partially owned and operated by the Irish government. It specializes in travel to Ireland, Scotland, and a few other European countries.

This dialed-in focus means that there are no better guided tours for Ireland and Scotland. I highly recommend their Taste of Scotland and Ireland Tour . In 11 days, you’ll experience sightseeing in Glasgow and Dublin, a day cruise on Loch Ness, carriage rides through the Irish countryside, and a feast in a historic castle.

Their tours have a great balance of exciting sightseeing and activities with enough downtime to relax or do plenty of exploring on your own. It’s a great way to get all the benefits of group travel without feeling like you have no control over your schedule.

If you want more freedom, CIE also offers independent adventures. They will build an itinerary for you and book your lodgings, admission tickets to attractions, and rental car (or you can opt for a private driver). You can choose from their pre-packaged itineraries, or build your own custom trip.

I also appreciate that CIE Tours has fairly affordable rates that include all admission tickets and most of your meals. Plus, they often offer discounts on airfare!

Nicetravel Iceland : Best Iceland Tour Company

NiceTravel

Maybe you’ve always been intrigued by Iceland’s wild, untamed beauty (I know I have). If you want to experience this first hand, Nicetravel Iceland is one of the best group travel companies in this amazing country.

Nicetravel Iceland by three local Icelandic families, so they have a lot of local expertise. They offer trips ranging from 8 hours to over a week and have itineraries to suit any type of traveler, whether you want to relax in natural hot spring pools or hike along the glaciers and coastlines.

They focus on small group tours, and you’ll never have more than 19 people in your group. Most of their tours start from the capital, Reykjavik, and will drive you to various destinations in Mercedes Sprinter Vans. Way better than the huge tour buses many other companies use.

In addition to standard tours for sightseeing, they also have a range of tour options for more adventurous travelers. You’re in the right place if you want to explore caves, hike on glaciers, or raft down raging rivers.

Cosmos : Best Tour Company for Spain and Portugal

Cosmos

For a tour operator on the Iberian Peninsula, Cosmos is one of the best choices, especially if you don’t want to spend an arm and a leg. Cosmos has been guiding group travel for nearly a century, and they employ expert local guides to help you get the most from your trip.

The Cosmos Best of Spain and Portugal Tour is an incredible 13-day group travel itinerary. You will stay in 7 amazing cities across the two countries and visit a wide range of historical sites.

Cosmos is also a good choice for responsible travel, as they have several initiatives to support local communities and planet-focused nonprofits like the African Wildlife Foundation, The Ocean Cleanup, and Trees4Travel. I appreciate companies that are taking steps toward sustainable travel.

Exodus : Best Egypt Tour Company

Exodus Adventure Travels

It’s hard to visit any travel website without seeing a picture of the Great Pyramids. Egypt has captivated the minds of explorers and travelers for centuries, and it is worth having on your bucket list.

If you want a guided tour of Egypt, I highly recommend Exodus Travels . With destinations on all seven continents, Exodus Travels is one of the most popular group travel companies for adventurous travelers, and their Egyptian tours are particularly good.

With 9 different guided tours in Egypt, you can find the perfect itinerary for your trip. Exodus Travels is a true expert in the industry and hires incredible guides for their group travel excursions.

Plus, Exodus Travels also offers trips that are perfect for family travel.

Klook : Best Asia Tour Company

Klook Logo

Whether you want to experience the hustle and bustle of downtown Tokyo or an adventurous trek to Everest Base Camp, Klook is one of the best group travel companies for Asia.

Klook is more than just a tour operator. It is a marketplace for everything travel, from airline tickets to hotels to tickets to museums, theme parks, and more. Klook offers trips for small groups or individual travelers all around the globe, but they are based in Asia, and that’s where they focus.

Klooks South Korea Tour will take you to Nami Island, through beautiful gardens, and into a centuries-old palace in Seoul.

Click Tours : Best Tour Company for Israel

Click Tours

Click Tours specializes in group travel in Europe and the Middle East, and Israel is by far their most popular tour destination. In Israel, Click Tours will offer trips ranging from 3-day highlight tours to 18-day deep-dive cultural experiences.

They focus on small group travel, and your tour group will have 15-24 guests. That means you get more personal attention and a more authentic experience of the country.

A tour of Israel with Click Tours will focus on historical and archeological sites. You’ll visit temples and ruins that are thousands of years old as well as dive into the amazing food and rich culture of Israel.

Epos Travel Tours : Best Tour Company for Greece

Epos Travel

If you’re looking for a group travel trip to Greece, Epos Travel Tours is a local company based in Tripolis that offers tours across the country.

Since Epos Travel Tours specializes only in Greece, you can expect catered trips and insider knowledge. They are truly the experts in travel to Greece, and their trip itineraries are designed to help you get the most from your trip, whether you want to visit historical sites or delve into amazing food and culture.

The Best Tour Operator Websites to Inspire You In 2019

the best tour operators website

A website’s text to image ratio is a balancing act, and travelers don’t stick around if it’s not right. According to a survey of 2,000 U.S. and UK travelers by GlobalWebIndex, one-third of respondents said social media content influences their destination choices more than TV, print media, or other online content.

3 Key Elements Every Tour Operator Website Needs to Inspire Travelers

Besides fancy bells and whistles of any effective website, tour operator websites also need:

  • Transparency
  • Responsive and mobile-ready features
  • Online booking

Before booking, a traveler wants to feel reassured after visiting a website. User-generated content (UGC) and reviews from platforms such as TripAdvisor go a long way on this front.

Does your website have one or several elements of social proof? And are the visuals on your site showing unique experiences that few other operators could provide?

User-generated content is quickly becoming a must-have for tour operator websites today: Eighty-five percent of travelers find it more influential than brand photos or videos. Based on the elements above, here are the best tour operator websites to inspire you in 2019.

Haka Tours: A Website Redesign that Immerses Travelers

Haka Tours , a New Zealand-based adventure tour provider, redesigned its website  to offer more content about New Zealand as a destination that compliments tour-specific content. The company’s former website wasn’t visually inspiring and offered only clunky, text-heavy descriptions of tours, said Barnaby Lawrence, Haka Tour’s digital marketing manager.

“The initial intent was just to replace the gallery on our homepage, but now we have multiple galleries throughout the site that use content based on hashtags. The homepage showcases a mixture of all the tours you can do, and we also have individual galleries for each tour category, such as mountain biking or adventure tours.”

Since the website’s relaunch, Haka Tours has experienced a 45 percent drop in bounce rate, a 75 percent increase in page views, and 30 percent more sessions per user.

Active Adventures: Showing Every Traveler They’re Welcome

Active Adventures , New Zealand-based tour company, knows how to capture people when they feel most inspired.

Videos, written testimonials, and UGC fill the homepage. This makes sense, given that customer reviews are trusted 12 times more than marketing coming directly from brands.

What we love most about this gallery is the destination-specific CTAs. Rather than a generic “Book Now” CTA layered across every visual, they use CTAs like “View our Annapurna trip!” or “View our Bolivia trip”. This brings visitors to a new booking page where they can check availability, the trip difficulty, ratings from other travelers and related treks.

Other conversion-driven elements include a chatbot, a newsletter, and a blog.

Papillon: Keeping Call to Actions Front and Center

Papillon , a Nevada-based aerial sightseeing company, gets travelers engaged the second they land on the homepage.

With a “Choose Your Adventure” widget at the top of the homepage, visitors are instantly involved in planning their trip and taken deeper into the site where they can view more content and information about a tour.

The user-generated content gallery high up on the homepage also includes call-to-actions overlayed on the photos. If a traveler is enticed by a photo of the Grand Canyon, they can click on that photo to get more information about a tour that visits the place in the photo.

Fat Tire Tours: Mobile-Ready to Help Travelers In-Destination

U.S. and European tour company Fat Tire Tours has a website that checks many of the same boxes as the other sites, but its mobile site is also compelling and makes it simple to book on the go and keep travelers informed.

Travel websites need to consider functionality for a variety of different screen sizes for travelers to quickly access the information they need, given many tours are still booked last-minute or day-off.

Against an average of 30+ tour operator websites analyzed , Fat Tires’ site also loads much higher than average — at a rate of 1.7 seconds vs 6.3. Anything faster than 3 seconds is considered best-in-class.

the best tour operators website

Hawaii Forest & Trail: Focused on a Mission

Hawaii Forest & Trail highlights its mission statement at the top of its homepage. Every piece of content throughout the site works to inspire travelers about the mission and Hawaii’s unique natural landscape, and also makes travelers feel like they’re part of a larger story.

Turning Travelers Into Marketers

Running a tour company is difficult enough without worrying about how to market all of the offerings.

Tours and activities are one of the most complex sectors of the travel industry for all the moving parts involved in making a tour successful. But this sector is also one of the most visual and anticipated by travelers.

Harvesting real-time user-generated content for a website is one of the biggest marketing strategies an operator can adopt to create a two-way conversation that keeps a company top-of-mind for the next trip.

Introduction to Ireland was a well rounded beautiful adventure. I enjoyed every single moment. Accomodations were good. Bus was comfortable and the driver was amazing. Our tour guide Tom was great. I respect the fact he runs a tight ship so people were on time, organized and directed us each day as to what to expect. I enjoyed his abundance of Irish history and story telling.
Great trip, good hotels and guiding and lovely food!

TRAVELERS IF YOU SPEAK ENGLISH ONLY THIS MAY NOT BE THE TRIP/COMPANY FOR YOU! If you are ready to spend most of the time on a bus, and very little time in the places they advertise. The guides we had were not organized, or gave very little history on the places we did visit. Guides often referring to Google for history of the places we went. Gave more information in Spanish. If you don't speak Spanish this can be very confusing and frustrating. Explanations for the times returning to meet to return to the bus NOT ALWAYS CLEAR, God forbid if you were late arriving at the bus, often RUDE TO THE TRAVELERS. Some of the bus drivers were giving the guides explanations, and history of the places we were passing though, but the guides not passing the information on to us. Also what they needed to do when crossing borders, having strangers on the bus helping them sort out our passports and other personal information! Excursions that I paid, BEING CHARGED 25$ EUR MORE THAN THE EXCUSION WAS LISTED FOR, the company DID NOT HAVE THEM ON THIER LIST!! I HAD IT ON MY "MY TRIP" When asked about this, I was told the Company "Boss" didn't know anything about these situations, trips, or times, "that they just drive their fancy cars!" Being told that we would be reimbursed for excursions but NEVER HAPPENED! Trying to contact the company about this situation, but NEVER getting an answer.
Quality or quantity is your choice. The tour list plenty of cities you get to visit and sounds like a great value; it’s wasn’t. London and the two cities Cambridge, and York were very good. I enjoyed them Windsor even after paying extra. Scotland was a different story. Edinburgh was nice we had a guided tour on the bus and an hour and a half of free time. Edinburgh has a history museum: where they kept the first cloned sheep; never even seen the building from the outside. The hotel was a twenty minute ride back into town. We checked in at 20:00 or 8 pm. Needing to be up and ready to leave by eight in the morning negates taking a bus for twenty minutes. Hotel location should have been closer to city center not the edge of town. Then we spent a day going through the Scottish Highlands to the Loch where Nessie is supposed to reside. The boat ride and time at the castle ruins while picturesque ate up three hours. We arrived in Glasgow at 8pm or 20:00 right from the freeway to the hotel. Glasgow was a complete and total disappointment. The hotel was set up for the thirty and under crowd all industrial and noisy. I didn’t care for it and the others in my group agreed it was the worst we stayed at. Now it was clean and modern just not a relaxing place. Rooms were tiny and there wasn’t a chair in it; just an ottoman looking thing to sit on. Only part of Glasgow we were able to see was when the bus took some riders to the train station. Then we were off to Ireland. Belfast was our first stop. Dropped off at the capital building and given two hours. No drive by the Titanic museum no history of Belfast except for a light touching of the troubles and a brief mention of the peace wall. I didn’t bother taking the Dublin tour and did my laundry that morning. I spoke with people who did the tour and wasn’t impressed by their experience. I did a full trip around the island exactly one year before and had pictures on my phone. When asked did they show you this or that the answer was generally no. Cork they set us down across the street from a department store and gave us an hour before we had to get on the bus to go to the hotel. No tour of Cork no history. Hotel again was far enough you couldn’t just walk in the time we had. The roast of the trip was the same story over and over again. The hotels while nice and clean were never where you could get out and about to enjoy and explore by yourself. I was looking forward to Galway as it was one of my favorite spots visited last year; the mall built with a castle wall inside it. Didn’t have time to go there if I also wanted to eat dinner. I did see two sights in Ireland I didn’t see last time. Filming location for The Quit Man and a monastery relics in the middle of Ireland. So this was quantity over quality and I wasn’t impressed.

Great tour Probably Experiences of my life. The tour was very well organized by our tour, Director Deborah she was very knowledgeable and fun !!! I got to see everything I wanted to for my first initial experience to Europe. The hotels were nice and breakfast was decent. Met a great group of people on my tour as a solo traveler!!! Highly recommend best money ever spent !!! Book this tour !!!!
The tour guide was excellent. Some accommodations could be better. At Hilton in London I realized too late that the shower switch wasn't even there exposing outside threads, but I had to get to the airport on time, so I had to tell about it at the reception when I was already leaving. I learned a lesson. I should xhexk if everything fine with the room before unpacking

This was a great tour and I'm so happy we did this. It gave us all of the highlights of Ireland so we wouldn't feel bad if we were never able to go back but left enough that if we did come back, we would know right where to go and what to do. I do have a few minor complaints but overall I do recommend the tour. First, the company is NOT good with communication. We emailed multiple times trying to get details about things like hotels or where we would be going on certain days or how to get signed up for optional excursions. Sometimes they would respond, sometimes not. And never with an actual answer. Don't expect to get any actual info until 5 days before the trip when you're assigned a tour guide (which to me, a planner, is INSANE). We couldn't even find out the starting hotel to stay near it. Which was another issue, the hotel in Dublin is so far away from everything, all the way on the south side of the city. Luckily it's on the train line but from that hotel to our additional hotel for our last night, it was an hour and a half of riding trains and buses. My second complaint is that we were not given enough time at many of the stops and not given the information we needed about the stops. For example, we stopped one day in Sligo and given an hour and a half for lunch. We just found out we were stopping in Sligo that day so we knew nothing about the town or what to do. We wandered around and all of the shops and restaurants weren't even open yet for lunch. I ended up having to get take away at the one bar we could find that was open and it was awful. Had we known where we were going ahead of time, we could have done some research and found what was open. Bunratty castle we were given an hour and a half to see things and eat. But then they tried to lead us on a tour that took almost an hour. We ended up walking out of the tour because Bunratty is a whole folk park village and it was amazing. Ultimately most people didn't even have time to eat. The same was true at Blarney. We were the first ones off the bus and power walked straight to the castle to get in line to kiss the stone. We were 5 minutes late getting back onto the bus and we did not a singular other thing on the Blarney Castle grounds. The tour guide told us there was a 4 story gift shop, we didn't even get to step foot in it. Most of the people didn't even get to go kiss the Blarney stone. Can you imagine, a whole trip to Ireland and having to make the choice not to see one of the most iconic things because we weren't given enough time? My last complaint is that there is no bathroom on the bus. Give or take if that was a good thing with some of the people on our trip, but I'm like a small child in that regard and some of the times we were driving were way too long. There was one place where we stopped for a photo op and I had to find some bushes, as did many of the men on the tour. Not a great experience having to do that but I simply could not wait another half hour to the next destination. Again, I do still recommend this tour but people deserve to know what they're getting themselves into. The tour guide was friendly and we all liked her. The driver was even better, Dermot - You're the BEST! And overall, a great introduction to Ireland.
Amazing tour! Thank you!

Itinerary was ok - some locations, like Plymouth, really aren’t worth visiting, while others with lots to see had minimal time (an hour or so) allocated.
Fine tour with a lot of nice people from almost all over the world. To us it was a disappointment that the optional tour in Edinburgh with Johnnie Walker experts, advertised in the program, wasn’t available.

My first Insight Tour and it was amazing. Scenic tour of the beautiful countryside, towns, and historic sites of England, Scotland, Wales, and Republic of Ireland. Our Travel Director, Greg, was very professional, knowledgeable of the history, culture, food, music, and local 'celebrities'. Greg and our driver (Arthur - the best) worked together as a team, making our trip enjoyable, memorable, and fun. Always courteous, respectful, and conscientious of our time, safety, and well-being. Good job!
What a wonderful way to experience my first tour. This 13 day highlight of the best that Britain an Ireland have to offer was full of amazing opportunities to taste the culture and meet locals that lovel and adore their country and the history that holds. Greg our tour guide was exceptionally in his organisation, knowledge and commitment to ensuring that we enjoyed our trip. His attention to details and the extras to make the group feel welcomed and special. My personal experience on my special day was made even more heart warming by Greg's kindness and effort in make sure that I felt loved and acknowledge with an celebration at the evening meal. Arthur our driver was amazing and his experience in driving showed in the professionalism he demonstrated in through the entire 13 days. Overall i would throughly recommend this trip to anyone especially if they are blessed with Greg and Arthur.

Cosmos

Good adventure through Ireland, saw all the spots you hear about. Wish there was more time at some locations, but overall very good
Not really my type of holiday travel! The stops are short and mainly at freeway truck and rest stops. The hotels were way too far from any real sites and some were small and cramped. I expected this tour to be hectic, given the countries visited and the days involved, . but IMO it could have been organized a lot better. The Tour Director and Driver were excellent but working with hands tied behind her back. The driven tours by coach just went too fast apart from road blocks or traffic jams. I appreciate that the TD kept mentioning that there are other tours by Cosmos, Globes that are lconcentrated on longer stays, however if they are at the hotels that we stayed at, then seeing the good sights are going to be a massive struggle. IMHO, even if the costs are higher for better hotels and safer areas, most would rather pay than skimp. Most of the stops overnight did not even have any decent restaurants where one could experience a decent meal of the region. Yes there were a couple of organized option dinners that involved costs, but these had to be reached via the coach. The three included meals are at the hotels which really did not have kitchens other than ones that could prepare breakfasts and the meals were simple and buffet style with one fixed item being served. As I started it may be OK for some, but definitely not my cup for tea!

The daily itinerary was packed full of adventures, learning and interesting sites. David, our tour guide was very informative, patient with us, and exercised flexibility to meet all the tourists needs. The group size and diversity was perfect. (We had 11). The van was very comfortable with plenty room for everyone. Lodging accommodations were very nice. I loved the small B&B and lodging experience. We definitely will use Overland Ireland again for our next trip to Ireland.
A wonderful trip with a wonderful leader! Flexible when needed. Very nice accommodations. Would book with Overland again!

I joined the group from 18 to 30 April 2024. What a fantastic experience. It is "authentically" Irish experience. Sean our guide lugged everyone's luggage up and down the stairs in the accommodation provided - I really felt sorry for him. Sean also educated us on Irish slang and how to use it. Sean shared his local knowledge with the group. The places visited were great. The tour has a good spread of activities and "own time". I would highly recommend the tour to anyone, whether travelling solo like me, or as couples. The sheep dog demonstration was a highlight!
We had a great time on this tour. The balance of sightseeing and being able to get out and do some amazing hikes on our 7 day Wild Atlantic Adventure tour was perfect. The small group is really the way to go. Everyone was super nice and fun to be with. The accommodation was also great. What made our tour super special was our guide Lee. His knowledge and obvious love of his heritage and country was what made the trip special. Would highly recommend Irish Experience Tours. It felt great to support a local company.

Intrepid Travel

Intrepid Travel

  • Excellent - 11,715 reviews for UK and Great Britain tours
Intrepid needs to tighten up this tour. Two free afternoons is too much when one has only three days on the island. Either make the tour two full days or two full days with one full day free to make plans to go to Hoy or Rousay. Give people guidance on what to do on the free day.
I recently traveled with a friend to Scotland. We included a week long tour with Intrepid, booked through Tour Radar. We paid a very healthy sum for the tour, $3,460 each. The description said the trip was appropriate for ages 15-99. It also described two nights in Portree on Isle of Skye with a private van tour on the full day on Isle of Sky. My friend and I chose this tour because of the time spent in Portree and on Isle of Skye, the small group size, and that if it was okay for ages 15-99 then I’d be fine six months post a major knee surgery. What wasn’t included in the description and what happened: -No where did it say that we’d be expected to walk/transport our luggage on foot from Points of transportation to our lodging ranging from 10-20 minutes. My 94 year old father-in-law lives with us and is able bodied, but there’s no way he could have done these distances While also carrying/pulling luggage. My 87 year old mother could not accomplish this either. I could do it with my recovering knee, but I was slower and it also used up some of the energy I needed for enjoying walking portions of the tour. I didn’t anticipate having to schlep my suitcase for 15 minutes at a time over uneven sidewalks, etc. I would have packed differently had I known or we would have looked for a different tour. -My friend and I still wonder why Fort Williams was included on the itinerary as a place to stay?
The only thing Intrepid provided was a walk to a castle that wasn’t open for visitors. The rest was on our own and there really wasn’t much happening other than a nice, little museum. We would have preferred more time on Isle of Skye. -We were notified prior to departure that our time on Isle of Skye would be at Kyleakin - not in Portree- and we’d have to arrange our own tour. Phone numbers were provided but no one on the tour had any luck booking anything prior to arriving, calls not returned, no availability, etc. So, 3-4 of our tour group spent 2 FULL hours or more on their phones while we were in Fort Williams trying to come up with some options for us. They pieced together a public bus ride to/from Kyleakin to Portree and a private taxi tour at our own expense! (After paying for it in the cost of our tour.) This should have been done by Intrepid!! Not once were we offered reimbursement. We didn’t have any time in Portree. We’d hoped to have lunch before our taxi tour, but all the restaurants were full. I found a to-go cup of tea and scone at a bike shop, then time in cue to use a bathroom. I’d looked forward to staying in Portree and had many places I had planned to walk to when not on the private van tour we were sold but didn’t get. Also, While staying in Kyleakin, the guest house did not provide a cooked breakfast, just light snacks in our rooms. Breakfast was provided, but we had to walk to/from the restaurant that was a mile each way. This used up time we could have been site seeing. Also, it would use up my knee energy for the days site-seeing. My friend went to breakfast but I skipped the walk to reserve my energy for site-seeing. Oh, and the whiskey tasting…we passed distilleries but we Were given a private lesson on tasting with our tour guide. While he did a fine job, the setting was not the same as a distillery setting. The room was bare, we used wine glasses, we were Supposed to take notes but no hard surfaces to write on, etc. Just wasn’t what any of us were expecting. I found Intrepid’s disregard for the changes and the misleading descriptions as to be very unprofessional. I use tours so that I don’t have to do all of the arranging. Why pay you if I’m going to have to do it myself? Next time I book a tour, I’ll be sure to avoid Intrepid. Many friends have asked about my trip. Unfortunately, the biggest disappointment was the tour. I’ve shared that multiple times now. I’m not the only member of the group that walked away Disappointed. We didn’t want to “blame” the tour guide, I don’t think he was responsible, he was just trying to keep us happy as he could sense how displeased we were. His answers too our questions were not satisfying at all. He seemed to be trying to cover for the company best he could.

There are stories, for example, about abandoned train stations, the different types of the post box, and some hidden locations. There’s lots of trivia, but also helpful information about best vegetarian food places, for example. Just look at how many different “Welcome walks” tours they offer.

Rather than rely on an outdated guidebook, Spotted By Locals allows you to get tips from insiders. Locals in 40 European cities blog about their favorite restaurants, bars, shops, and festivals – it’s like having a friend show you the best spots. You can buy a PDF guide to each city or download the free smartphone app. This is a great encouragement for tour guides to use this kind of information in their tours. Tour operators could perhaps embrace this kind of thing in their own cities. You can even easily become a “spotter” yourself and be a part of this interesting movement.

Along with an authored guide, it contains user reviews, forums, blogs and general advice, mainly aimed at budget travelers. Arguably better than the big-name publishers. It’s good to see how they cover pre-trip planning information, weather information, country backgrounders, and itineraries. Plus, they check out hotels, restaurants, and things to do and see in the region, and provide transport information.

How to find the best Kilimanjaro tour operators

There are so many companies offering Kilimanjaro climbs that it can be hard to know which to choose without some sort of roadmap. With that in mind, here's a list of things to help you find the best Kilimanjaro tour operators.

1. Check if it's a tour operator or travel agent

There are travel agents selling Kilimanjaro climbs run by third-party tour operators. This is perfectly legal, but there are a few dangers to booking with a travel agent, including the fact that they no longer have the same level of skin in the game once you've made payment.

A Kilimanjaro tour operator sells its own climbs, meaning you book and then climb with the same company. This is clearly the better model as it's in the operator's best interests to ensure every aspect of your trip goes smoothly and well, from pre-booking till the time you fly back home after your adventure.

FA group pics Materuni Waterfall, Kilimanjaro

As you can guess since we're the ones pointing this out, we at Follow Alice are a Kilimanjaro tour operator. 😉 This means we take care of every aspect of your trip, from booking to the actual climb, and each stage matters to us!

2. Ensure the operator is licensed in TZ

A company can only legally host Kilimanjaro climbs if it holds a Tourism Business Licence (or TALA) from the Government of Tanzania.

Unfortunately, some companies do still manage to run Kilimanjaro climbs without the proper licensing. To book with such an operation is risky, not least because you're putting your money and ultimately your safety in the hands of people who don't mind breaking the law.

3. See if it's a KRTO (formerly KPAP) partner

Not only do the best Kilimanjaro tour operators keep to the straight and narrow in terms of legalities, they also want to do things ethically. A particularly big issue within the Kilimanjaro trekking business is tour operators underpaying their crew and also in other ways mistreating them.

The best and easiest way for you to ensure that you don't support a dodgy tour operator is to only use one that is recognised partner of the Kilimanjaro Responsible Trekking Organisation (KRTO), formerly known as the Kilimanjaro Porters Assistance Project (KPAP).

The screening process for becoming KRTO-approved is rigorous. So any tour operator recognised by KRTO is a safe bet, as the certification assures you that it:

  • Pays its crew fairly.
  • Trains its guides adequately.
  • Feeds it crew properly.
  • Provides its crew with warm clothing and decent tents.
  • In every other way treats its staff fairly and respectfully.

Unfortunately, there are Kilimanjaro tour operators who claim to be approved by KRTO that aren't, so please check any prospective company against KRTO's own list of partners for responsible travel .

4. Check what's included and what's excluded

Budget tour operators usually draw in potential clients by boasting very low prices. But often this is because they provide the bare minimum in terms of services and amenities.

While this is okay (provided they treat their staff well and don't stint on safety), you might want to tally the exclusions and then bear that figure in mind when looking at the prices of tour operators that include these extras in their package price.

At Follow Alice, for instance, we include a host of things in our Kilimanjaro prices that budget operators do not, such as:

  • Hotel accommodation the night before and the night after your trek.
  • Private transport to and from the trailhead.
  • Use of a four-season sleeping bag and a sleeping mat.
  • A private chemical toilet just for your group.
  • All meals, snacks and purified drinking water.

For a full list of what's included and not included in our Kilimanjaro climbs, please look at any of our exciting Kilimanjaro itineraries .

Note that there are also some luxury Kilimanjaro tour operators, who naturally charge their clients much more.

If your budget could extend to a luxury operator, check what extras are on offer to see if you personally feel the heftier price tag is worth it. Usually they'll offer five-star accommodation on either side of the trek, as well as some luxuries on the trail like fancier food and showers. (Just don't assume that their guides are automatically better – some of the best-rated Kilimanjaro guides own or work for mid-range tour operators!)

5. Consider the routes and trek durations on offer

Linked to the previous point, please consider which of the seven Kilimanjaro ascent routes are being offered when comparing Kilimanjaro tour operator prices .

Some tour operators offer a very low fee because they're taking you on one of the shortest ascent routes and you're therefore on the mountain for fewer days. While this can seem an attractive option, we caution against it, as Kilimanjaro altitude sickness is a very serious issue that can even prove fatal.

The best Kilimanjaro tour operators offer the longer routes because they're safer.

You also reduce your chances of successfully summiting Kilimanjaro if you try to conquer it in too few days. Don't be one of the countless folks we've encountered who underestimate how tough Kilimanjaro really is to climb!

We recommend taking at least eight or nine days for a Kilimanjaro climb, but certainly no fewer than seven days. This is why we don't even offer the Umbwe route at Follow Alice, as this route ascends the mountain too quickly and has a very low summit success rate.

The longer Kili routes have higher summit success rates

We also don't offer the Marangu route at Follow Alice, as on this one route you stay in communal huts. On all of the other routes, you overnight in a tented camp set up by your tour operator. Camping is the more expensive option, but the camps are usually cleaner, and also your group has its own space which helps to foster a more intimate and fun atmosphere.

If you want to find the best Kilimanjaro tour operators, you must consider the overall safety and quality of the experience on offer.

6. Determine the level of service offered

The best Kilimanjaro tour operators also offer a better level of service. Some questions to consider in this regard are:

  • What level of help is on offer before the trek to help you prepare?
  • What's the quality of the food that will be served?
  • What's the quality of the camping equipment provided?
  • How experienced are the mountain crew?
  • What's the guide-to-client ratio?

On this last point, it's important that there be enough guides for your group size. We say this not just from a safety point of view, but also in terms of your overall success and enjoyment on the climb: guides are there to monitor your health, encourage you, answer your questions, and even literally hold your hand if that's what the moment requires.

Mihaly and guide close up Kilimanjaro

Your Kilimanjaro guide often becomes your best buddy during your trek

At Follow Alice, we have a guide-to-client ratio of about 1:2. So if you're a group of eight climbers, there will be four guides.

It's important that there are always enough guides to keep an eye on everyone, even if a group becomes splintered on the trail owing to differing fitness levels or some other factor.

Guides are also often a critical factor in climbers making it to Uhuru Peak. In fact, many past climbers have stated emphatically that they wouldn't have made it to the summit of Kilimanjaro without their guides' invaluable encouragement and assistance.

7. Check on its safety measures and equipment

A major differentiating factor between Kilimanjaro tour operators is how seriously they take your safety. Please research a potential operator's safety measures and protocols. Some questions to guide you here are:

  • What first aid training do the guides have?
  • What health checks are standard on each climb?
  • What first aid equipment is carried on the trek?
  • What are the evacuation protocols should something go wrong?

Any reputable tour operator will be happy to provide answers to these questions, and should even have detailed online descriptions of the same. (If you'd like to know about Follow Alice's safety measures, please read How we keep you safe on Kilimanjaro .)

8. Research its approach to trekking sustainability

Every year, tens of thousands of people climb Kilimanjaro. While they're spread out over different routes, that's still a LOT of people to be on one mountain! Think of the countless footfalls, the many tents being erected, the rubbish (trash) created, the number of times people have to relieve themselves ...

Unless tour operators and climbers trek and camp in sustainable ways, the beauty and ecosystems of Kilimanjaro won't maintain their integrity for long. ( Leave No Trace has an important set of principles you can read to learn how to be a responsible trekker.)

With this mind, we encourage you to find out if the Kilimanjaro tour operators you're considering have a decent approach to sustainable trekking (or any approach to it at all!).

9. Investigate its website

Finding the best Kilimanjaro tour operators does take a little work (unless, perhaps, you have a solid recommendation from someone you really trust). One good way to suss out a company is to browse their website and social media platforms.

In terms of the website, does it look like a fly-by-night operation? Or has it been around for a while? Is there helpful information readily available – like route maps, blog posts and videos – to help you prepare?

You might also like to see if the tour operator has a social media presence on platforms like Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn and YouTube. Such accounts not only suggest a legitimate operation, but they can also give you a great feel for the company's ethos and vibe.

10. Pose the company a question

We recommend reaching out to any Kilimanjaro tour operator you're seriously considering using to evaluate the responsiveness and helpfulness of its staff. That said, sales teams aren't always the most reliable litmus test for overall company quality. So if you really want to screen a company, perhaps ask a specific question that requires a detailed or insightful answer?

If you really want to go the extra mile, you might look at how the company responds to other people's queries and comments on their social media sites.

There would be a youtube video here.

11. Check out online reviews

Our final recommendation is that you read some online reviews for the tour operators you're considering.

While the reviews on a company's own website have some value, please be sure to take a look at independent review sites like Google Reviews, TrustPilot and TripAdvisor . No independent online reviews? This should give you pause, unless they're being upfront that you'd be on the guinea-pig trip!

Well that's our list of 11 ways to find the best Kilimanjaro tour operators. We hope it's been helpful.

Extra thought: Does the operator offer add-on trips?

We've found over the years that many Kilimanjaro clients like to add a safari or Zanzibar visit before or after their trek. Since most Kilimanjaro climbers have to travel to the region from outside of East Africa, it makes sense to see a little more of this beautiful part of the world while in the area!

With this in mind, you might like to check if your proposed Kilimanjaro tour operator offers other activities in the region so that you can have them organise one or two of those for you too.

You enjoy a more seamless experience when it's just one tour operator taking you on the different parts of your Tanzania or East Africa adventure.

If you decide to climb Kilimanjaro with Follow Alice , here are some of the other exciting adventures we could organise for you in East Africa:

  • A thrilling Big Five safari in the Serengeti and Ngorongoro Crater.
  • A trip to the sunny beaches of Zanzibar.
  • A chance to see the Great Migration in Kenya .
  • An exciting mountain gorilla trek in Rwanda or Uganda .

Let us know if any or all of these appeal to you, and we can start chatting!

If your idea of getting away from it all includes a vacation without the kids, consider booking an adults-only or adults-oriented cruise . While some lines provide a fully adults-only experience (i.e., children are not allowed on board), others offer adult-focused venues and activities on the ship to keep you separate from younger patrons.

The following cruise lines provide upscale amenities, immersive excursions, sophisticated dining options, lively nighttime entertainment and time for relaxation among like-minded – and similarly aged – travelers.

Find your perfect cruise

Viking Ocean Cruises

Viking Star Explorers' Lounge at night.

Travelers ages 18 and older are welcome aboard Viking 's adults-only ships, which feature destination-focused itineraries around the world. The line's 11 oceangoing ships carry between 930 and 998 guests (at double occupancy) and offer luxurious, comfortable Scandinavian-style spaces. The line will add Viking Vesta to its ocean fleet in 2025.

Viking's exploration program boasts special access to behind-the-scenes experiences curated for travelers who are interested in history, food, the arts or science. Immerse yourself in local culture with a visit to a traditional family farm near Bergen, Norway, or spend an evening dining on Chinese specialties at a home-hosted dinner in Shanghai .

In addition to these off-the-beaten-path excursions, guests can visit iconic sites like the ancient city of Ephesus (Kuşadasi) in Turkey and the Acropolis in Athens, Greece . Viking also hosts onboard enrichment programs like cooking classes and lectures by historians. Cruise fares include stateroom accommodations with a private veranda, all meals (including specialty dining venues), wine and beer at onboard lunch and dinner, 24-hour room service, one free excursion per port, complimentary Wi-Fi access, and access to onboard amenities such as the Nordic Spa and fitness center.

In addition to its ocean vessels, Viking offers river cruises in destinations around the world – including Mississippi River cruises aboard Viking Mississippi. The line also has two Polar Class 6 expedition ships, Viking Octantis and Viking Polaris, which traverse waterways from Canada, the U.S. and South America to remote destinations in Antarctica and the Arctic.

Virgin Voyages

Virgin Voyages offers an adults-only retreat for guests ages 18 and older. The line currently has three sister ships: Scarlet Lady (the first in the fleet), Valiant Lady and Resilient Lady . The line's fourth ship, Brilliant Lady, is set to debut in September 2025.

All the ships in this adults-only cruise line feature 1,404 cabins (most with balconies) and RockStar Quarters suites, where guests have access to Richard's Rooftop, an exclusive outdoor deck space. The superyacht-inspired vessels boast 20-plus eateries, including restaurants by Michelin-starred chefs, and a variety of onboard fitness and wellness spaces. At Redemption Spa, relax and recharge in the mud room or salt therapy chamber – and then take rejuvenating dips in the hot and cold plunge pools. You can even order a bottle of bubbly anywhere on the ship via the Virgin Voyages app's secret "Shake for Champagne" feature.

Itineraries on Virgin Voyages span destinations in the Caribbean, Europe and Morocco, as well as trans-Atlantic crossings. The line will also feature 21 new ports across its global fleet in 2025, including destinations in Iceland, Turkey, Oman, Italy, Portugal, the Cayman Islands and more. Cruise fares cover meals at all the dining venues and basic beverages such as soda, water, tea and coffee. Gratuities for the crew, Wi-Fi access, entertainment and group fitness classes are also included. While on board, be sure to indulge in a swanky dinner at The Wake and an immersive show at The Red Room, a unique multiform theater at sea.

P&O Cruises

P&O Cruises ship at port at sunset.

Courtesy of P&O Cruises

Two ships in P&O Cruises' U.K.-based fleet – Arcadia and Aurora – are exclusively for adults 18 and older. Arcadia, the slightly newer of the two ships (debuted in 2005), carries 2,094 guests at double occupancy, plus 866 crew. The ship departs from Southampton in the U.K. and sails to a variety of European destinations, ranging from Spain and the Canary Islands to Norway and Iceland; some cruises visit the U.S. and Canada. The ship will also sail world cruises in January 2025 and 2026.

Arcadia's 15 restaurants, cafes and bars include Indian cuisine with a British twist at Sindhu, as well as steaks and seafood by renowned British chef Marco Pierre White at Ocean Grill. Passengers can take a class to sample the line's branded gins; sip Champagne at Intermezzo, the ship's cocktail and Champagne venue; or enjoy a pre-dinner aperitif at the yacht-inspired Spinnaker. After exploring exciting ports of call, head back on board to enjoy Arcadia's elegant interiors and top-notch service. You can splurge on a stone therapy treatment and a visit to the thermal suite at the spa for some extra pampering, followed by a live show at the three-tiered theater, The Palladium. Then, finish off the evening dancing the night away at The Globe.

Aurora is a slightly more intimate ship, carrying 1,874 passengers (double occupancy) and 850 crew members. A four-level atrium gallery sits at the heart of the vessel. Itineraries include destinations in the Mediterranean, the Baltic, the British Isles, Iceland, the Caribbean and South America. There are 19 restaurants, bars and cafes on the ship, including club-style restaurant Alexandria and casual spots like The Beach House. After dinner, live entertainment and dancing await you at the show lounge Carmen's, as do larger productions at the ritzy 660-seat Curzon Theatre.

Top Cruises Designed for Adults

While some all-inclusive – or mostly all-inclusive – boutique and luxury cruise lines are family-friendly, many of the onboard venues and activities are adult-by-design. Since there are few (or no) activities geared toward younger cruisers and no babysitting services, you typically won't find parents with young children on these ships.

Azamara's four upscale boutique ships provide immersive travel experiences geared toward adults. These smaller ships – accommodating a maximum of 702 guests – sail waterways and rivers that larger ships can't access, docking in city centers and unique ports of call around the globe.

Many Azamara voyages also offer longer stays and overnights in port, unlike some competitors' itineraries. Some even feature special events, such as a 12-night voyage from Rome to watch the Monaco Grand Prix in May 2025, or a 25-night cruise in February 2025 from Buenos Aires, Argentina , to attend Carnival in Rio de Janeiro . In addition, the line is extending its offerings on Country Intensive voyages in 2024 and 2025 with itineraries in various continental European countries, the United Kingdom, South Africa, Iceland and Australia.

On board, you'll find a wide selection of casual and formal dining options ranging from Windows Cafe to the main dining room, Discoveries Restaurant. Specialty restaurant offerings include top-notch steak and seafood at Prime C and Italian fare at Aqualina. Atlas Bar is a unique venue on Azamara Onward (the line's newest ship), though its artisanal cocktail menu is also available on the line's other ships. Discoveries Lounge is another guest-favorite spot, and wine aficionados will enjoy pairing limited-production and rare vintages from the Wine Cellar with dinner.

Cruise fares include stateroom accommodations; select spirits, wine and beer; gratuities; 24-hour room service; and nonalcoholic beverages. You'll also have access to complimentary AzAmazing Celebrations with special evening and daytime events ashore and on the ship. You can purchase a package that includes additional amenities like unlimited Wi-Fi, specialty dining, shore excursion credits and other perks. Butler service and other extras come with suite accommodations.

When it launched in 2019, Scenic Eclipse I was touted as "The World's First Discovery Yacht." The intimate vessel offers an all-inclusive, ultra-luxurious experience for just 228 guests (double occupancy). The line's second luxury yacht, Scenic Eclipse II, which is nearly identical to its sister ship, debuted from Lisbon, Portugal , in April 2023. The Polar Class 6 rating enables these two yachts to sail to destinations like Antarctica; on these expedition-style voyages, the ship carries only 200 guests and offers a nearly one-to-one crew-to-guest ratio.

All suite accommodations include a private veranda or terrace; butler service; state-of-the-art amenities; a king-size Scenic Slumber Bed; and an in-suite minibar stocked with wine, spirits and other personally selected beverages. You'll also find indulgences like onboard helicopters for intimate excursions and the line's submersibles for underwater exploration.

Guests can enjoy up to 10 dining experiences on the ship, including French fine dining at Lumière; innovative Asian flavors at Koko's Asian Fusion; Italian, steak and seafood specialties at Elements; or an immersive dining experience at Chef's Garden @ Epicure. When it's time for an after-dinner drink, sample craft cocktails or the impressive selection of whiskeys available at Scenic Lounge Bar. Other onboard activities include getting an invigorating treatment at Senses Spa or just relaxing with Champagne and spectacular views on deck 10 at the Sky Bar.

Scenic's ships sail to destinations in Australia and the South Pacific; Europe and the Mediterranean; Asia; the Americas and the Caribbean; and the polar regions of Antarctica and the Arctic.

For a casual evening, plan to dine alfresco at the Pool Grill. Adults can also enjoy pre-dinner cocktails in one of the lounges and nightly entertainment at the Constellation Theater. For a nightcap, sip a fine cognac in one of the ship's favorite hideaways, Connoisseur Club. There are also plenty of options for exercise, fitness and relaxation at Serene Spa & Wellness.

If you're planning a once-in-a-lifetime adventure on the high seas, consider booking the Regent Suite. Situated on deck 14 – and boasting more than 4,400 square feet of indoor and outdoor space – this luxurious accommodation features an impressive balcony with a minipool spa, in addition to two bedrooms, a living room and dining room, and a private in-suite spa. Cruise fare for the suite also includes a long list of high-end amenities such as access to a private dining room called The Study, a personal car and guide in every port, free in-suite spa services, a complimentary cocktail party for eight guests, a private butler and more.

Regent's 2025-2026 Legendary Voyages include sailings to destinations like Barcelona, Tokyo and more. If a world cruise is on your bucket list, you can circumnavigate the globe for 154 nights beginning in January 2026 aboard Seven Seas Mariner.

Silversea's all-inclusive luxury ocean and expedition cruises offer voyages to more than 900 destinations across the seven continents. Silversea's 11 ultra-luxury ships and expedition vessels range in size from 51 to 364 suites and boast spacious ocean view accommodations – most with private verandas. Cruise fares cover door-to-door transfers from home to the ship, including airfare (business class in some destinations) and pre- and post-cruise hotel stays. On board, guests will have butler service, a nearly one-to-one ratio of guests to staff, 24-hour gourmet dining, premium alcoholic beverages, one complimentary shore excursion in each port, gratuities and more.

Silver Ray is set to become the 12th ship in the Silversea fleet when it debuts in summer 2024. The luxury vessel adds more open spaces and top-notch cuisine. Silver Ray is also the second vessel in the fleet to be powered by liquefied natural gas (LNG) and is billed as a more sustainable cruise ship.

Four of the line's ships are purpose-built expedition vessels that sail to the farthest reaches of the Earth, including Antarctica, the Arctic and Greenland, French Polynesia and the Pacific, Asia, and more. On these sailings, guests will experience immersive exploration with as many as 28 expedition staff per cruise. Unique upcoming itineraries visit Greenland and the Arctic Circle, as well as remote locales like Robinson Crusoe Island, Tahiti and more.

Seabourn features an all-inclusive adult-focused experience on its five luxury ocean vessels and two expedition ships. One of the line's newest ships, Seabourn Pursuit, is an ultra-luxury Polar Class 6 purpose-built expedition vessel with 132 oceanfront veranda suites. The ship is equipped with two submarines for underwater exploration, kayaks and 24 Zodiacs. There's also a 24-person expedition team to assist guests with exploring far-reaching destinations like Antarctica, the Arctic, the Kimberley region of Australia, the Amazon and the Northwest Passage.

The new Seabourn Ovation accommodates up to 600 guests (double occupancy) and offers amenities found on most of Seabourn's ships: well-appointed oceanfront suites, living areas with dining tables, verandas and nearly a one-to-one staff-to-guest ratio. Guests can try Seabourn's new Mediterranean venue, Solis, on four of the line's ships, including Ovation. You'll also find health and wellness programs curated by Dr. Andrew Weil.

The Seabourn Conversations program is another highlight. Accomplished experts host adventures ashore, participate in meals and chat with guests on board. For a special treat, don't miss the Caviar in the Surf beach party. Windstar's six intimate ships accommodate between 148 and 342 guests. Passengers can choose between cruising on one of the line's three-masted Wind Class vessels or one of its three Star Plus Class ships.

Windstar just announced the addition of two new ships to its fleet; Star Seeker is expected to launch in December 2025, followed by Star Explorer in December 2026. These two vessels will feature 112 suites with private verandas and infinity windows, two Owner's Suites with wraparound balconies, a water sports platform, a two-story spa and fitness center, and more. The ships are constructed with ice-strengthened hulls that position them for exploration in remote destinations like Antarctica.

Windstar's adult-focused and casual – but still elegant – onboard experiences feature locally inspired top-notch dining, guest lecturers, a water sports platform on all ships, an open bridge policy and an engaging social environment. If you're looking for a romantic getaway, Windstar is also regarded as one of the most romantic cruise lines for a wedding, honeymoon , vow renewal or anniversary trip, especially in magical destinations like the South Pacific or Europe.

Windstar's smaller ships can reach ports, coves, harbors and villages that are not accessible by larger vessels. They also offer more than 2,000 immersive cultural experiences in port, many with small groups. You'll find culinary-themed voyages in partnership with the James Beard Foundation, as well as wine-focused itineraries around the world. What's more, Windstar's itineraries offer late evenings and overnights in its ports of call, allowing guests to experience local culture and cuisine after dark.

Windstar will begin sailing in South America in December 2025 with the 312-passenger (double occupancy) Star Pride, offering excursions to UNESCO World Heritage Sites like the town of Cusco , Machu Picchu and the Galápagos Islands .

Other Top Adults-Only Cruise Options

While these larger ships offer activities for families and children of all ages, adults can also find hidden retreats and venues just for grown-ups. These spaces are typically quieter and situated away from the crowds.

Celebrity Cruises

Celebrity Cruises offers spaces created with adult guests in mind. On Celebrity Beyond and the newest addition to the fleet, Celebrity Ascent , adults can have a unique dining experience at Le Voyage by Daniel Boulud. The world-renowned Global Culinary Ambassador for the line, Daniel Boulud created the menu at this elegant venue, incorporating dishes inspired by his travels. You'll also find an impressive wine list to accompany your dining experience.

When it's time to relax, The Solarium is a popular adults-only area located on the Resort Deck of all Celebrity ships. This light-filled pool area encased by a glass dome is the perfect quiet space for reading a book or taking a nap. While there, you can also grab a light breakfast or lunch at the Spa Cafe and Juice Bar, or order your favorite cocktail while lounging in the hot tub.

Other adult-focused venues to check out on Celebrity Ascent, Beyond and Apex are the new elevated bar spaces. The Edge series World Class Bar – a popular spot on other Celebrity Cruises ships – features craft cocktails in a beautiful setting. And don't miss the two-story Sunset Bar on Celebrity Ascent, a reimagined space by interior designer and TV personality Nate Berkus. The aft location of the bar offers almost twice the space as previous iterations and beautiful wake views.

Princess Cruises

The Sanctuary, a retreat for guests ages 18 and older, offers an escape from bustling public spaces. The relaxing top-deck venue is available on all Princess Cruises ships and features plush lounge chairs, a spa-like setting and Serenity Stewards, who serve light bites and other refreshments. To fully unwind, consider reserving a private cabana, where you can book an open-air massage. The child-free venue varies from ship to ship, with some offering the exclusive Retreat pool, cabanas and a bar area, and newer iterations featuring more space.

Spellbound by Magic Castle is an exciting new venue aboard the line's newest ship, Sun Princess, for adults 21 and older. The collaboration with The Magic Castle private club in Hollywood offers guests an evening of magic, illusions and theatrical cocktails in a Victorian-inspired space.

If you're heading off the ship for an excursion to Princess Cays (the cruise line's private island in the Bahamas), plan to chill out for the day in an adults-only Sanctuary Bungalow. Located just minutes from the ocean and beach, the rentals accommodate four people, and the price includes two complimentary float rentals. You can also order a gourmet picnic to enjoy while lounging on shore.

Back on the ship, adults can reserve a spot for the line's new Winemaker Dinners, a partnership with Caymus Vineyards. These 12-guest evenings are offered fleetwide, two to three times during each cruise. Winemaker Chuck Wagner personally selected the wines from the notable Napa Valley winery to pair with the elevated five-course menu.

Carnival Cruise Line

While there, guests can enjoy relaxing loungers, daybeds and whirlpools. Disney Cruise Line

Though Disney Cruise Line tends to attract families and younger travelers, it also offers multiple spaces and activities for adults 18 and older. Disney's newest ship, Disney Wish , boasts several luxurious adults-only venues featuring characters and scenes from "Beauty and the Beast."

For top-notch steaks, contemporary Italian cuisine and panoramic ocean views, make a reservation at the Cogsworth-inspired Palo Steakhouse. If you prefer French-style fare and world-class wines served in an elegant and shimmering setting, Enchanté by three-Michelin-starred chef Arnaud Lallement is the perfect place for a romantic dinner for two. Before dinner at either venue, enjoy a signature cocktail at The Rose. After dinner, you won't want to miss the galactic libations and ever-changing views of faraway galaxies at the adults-only Star Wars: Hyperspace Lounge bar.

Depending on the ship, adult travelers can also dance the night away in a trendy club, watch live entertainment or a cabaret show, catch a sports game on satellite TV, or relax with an after-dinner cocktail at a bar or lounge. Outdoors, the kid-free Quiet Cove Pool is a tranquil place to relax on all the ships. For even more pampering, Senses Spa & Salon boasts treatment rooms with ocean views, luxurious spa villas and other amenities. On Castaway Cay, Disney Cruise Line 's private island, adults can head to Serenity Bay – a scenic, adults-only stretch of the beach.

Norwegian Cruise Line

Norwegian Cruise Line has three adults-only outdoor venues for guests 18 and older (though specific spaces vary by ship). On Norwegian 's Bliss, Escape, Getaway and Breakaway ships, the Vibe Beach Club sun deck invites guests to relax in oversized hot tubs and comfy daybeds, adding perks like a full-service bar and chilled towels. Guests can enjoy two-story beach clubs on Norwegian Joy and Norwegian Encore, while the clubs on Norwegian Prima and Norwegian Viva include the line's first infinity hot tubs. You can purchase a multiday pass in advance for the club, and cabana rentals are available for more privacy.

At Norwegian Epic's two-level Posh Beach Club, complimentary perks include fruit skewers, cold water spritzers and a snack menu. Multiday passes are available to all adult cruisers, while travelers who book a Haven suite can access Posh Beach Club for free. Spice H2O is another adults-only venue on the Norwegian Bliss, Joy, Escape, Getaway, Breakaway, Epic, Star and Spirit vessels; access is complimentary. At night, the space becomes an open-air dance club where you can spend the evening partying under the stars.

Royal Caribbean International

Solarium is Royal Caribbean International 's complimentary, child-free space open to guests 18 and older. Located at the front of every ship in the fleet, this indoor-outdoor oasis (or indoor-only on Quantum Class ships) offers impressive vistas and endless views of the sea. Thanks to a full glass canopy over the interior space, adult passengers can enjoy quiet lounging areas, swimming pools and whirlpool tubs with a view, no matter the weather. Select ships feature a cascading lagoon for further relaxation.

Be sure to grab a tropical cocktail or zero-proof drink at Solarium Bar (or Sunshine Bar, on Quantum ships) to sip poolside while enjoying the ocean vistas. Guests of both bars must be at least 21 years old when sailing from North America or a minimum of 18 when departing from South America, Europe, Asia, Australia and New Zealand.

Adult cruisers (18 and older) can relax and chill out at the first suspended infinity pool at sea at The Hideaway on Royal Caribbean's newest ship, Icon of the Seas. The beach-vibe neighborhood, perched eight stories above the sea at the back of the ship, features Champagne cocktails, a DJ spinning tunes, full-size daybeds, a wraparound bar, and endless ocean and sunset views from the multilevel terrace.

Frequently Asked Questions

"Adults-only cruise ships – or adults-only spaces on cruise ships – have become increasingly popular over the years," says Chris Gray Faust, executive editor at Cruise Critic. "That's not only because fewer people are having families. It's also because parents themselves often want the chance to get away, either by themselves for a romantic trip or with friends to celebrate a special occasion, girls' or guys' weekend, or milestone birthdays."

"I seek out adult spaces on cruise ships primarily because I want my experience on a ship to mirror my life on land – a little quieter, with more sophisticated food and drink options," she explains. "I also appreciate the opportunity to connect with my friends who are parents in a space where we can have personal one-on-one conversations or let loose a bit with some drinks. Adults with children are more than just their kids, after all – and they also appreciate a space where they don't have to worry about their little ones."

Anne Scully, a partner at the luxury travel company EMBARK Beyond, says, "With so many cruise lines and sailings, it's always a good idea to have options – and adults-only cruises are very popular." She adds, "Viking and Virgin have always focused on adults-only cruises and most river cruises also cater to adult passengers."

Adults-only cruises are designed with guests ages 18 and older in mind, from the staterooms and dining venues to the onboard entertainment and shore excursions. What you typically won't find on board are water or theme parks, climbing walls, game rooms, and restaurants serving kid-friendly foods.

If you're looking for a relaxing, fun and romantic vacation without the kids in tow – and you don't want to deal with the other passengers' children on your getaway – consider booking a sailing specifically for cruisers at least 18 years old. Alternatively, select a cruise line or ship that caters to mostly adults and doesn't offer any services, kids clubs, babysitting or activities for children.

You don't have to be a kid to be a Disney Cruise Line fan. While the line does not have an adults-only vessel within the fleet, there are plenty of kid-free spaces for adults only. Adults can enjoy cocktails, dinner and entertainment in several venues and relax at designated pool areas on the ship. There's also private, adults-only stretch of beach, Serenity Bay, on the line's private island, Castaway Cay.

In addition, Disney offers one of the best programs to keep youngsters entertained at sea, so you'll find that many of the children hang out in the kids club during the day and in the evening. These club spaces are divided by age groups, and they're typically open until midnight or 1 a.m. so parents – and even adults without kids – can enjoy a night out on the ship sans kids.

7 Tour Operator Software for Small Teams | Bókun (2024 Guide)

Small tour guide brands should look for a few key features when comparing booking software:

  • First, you need the tools to create a booking website. Many brands offer booking widgets you can embed on your site to drive bookings. But if you don’t already have a booking website, you’ll need tour operator software with a website builder.
  • Second, you need tools to grow your distribution network over time. You can get your name in front of more potential customers by selling tours on OTAs and partnering with other businesses to promote each others’ services and experiences.
  • Third, you need user-friendly features to manage operations and staff. This includes creating tour listings, setting pricing and availability, keeping track of bookings, assigning tour guides, automating simple customer communications, and reporting on revenue.

You’ll also want to consider scalability — your booking management system should adapt with your business as you grow. That way, you don’t “outgrow” your systems and reach a point where you have to switch software (as we all know transitioning software can be a massive headache).

Last, and perhaps most obviously — pricing is important for small teams. Comparing tour operator software pricing is tricky because pricing models can vary: some systems charge subscription fees, some charge booking or transaction fees, and some charge a combination.

We compiled this guide of 8 popular tour operator software for small teams. We’ll cover the features bulleted above, scalability, and pricing, so you can compare the options and find what’s best for you.

Our guide kicks off with a review of our solution, Bókun. (To explore our platform after reading, we offer a free 14-day trial .)

Best Tour Operator Software for Small Teams

  • Bókun

1. Bókun

Flexible tour operator software to support small teams & guide growth strategies.

Bókun homepage: More Bookings. Less Work.

Bókun is loved by tour operators ( rated 4.8 stars on Capterra ) because:

  • Our platform brings everything to sell tours online and manage operations under one roof. You can ditch manual methods (like tracking bookings in spreadsheets ), consolidate your tech stack, and keep everyone and everything running smoothly.
  • Bókun is super easy to use and learn. We offer a free 14-day trial so you can get acclimated to the platform before deciding if you want to opt-in to the PRO subscription.  Users report little to no learning curve when adopting Bókun and adjusting platform features when they want to add sales channels or start partnerships. Our team is happy to answer questions and help during onboarding, and we even offer consulting for growing teams as they increase reservations through our platform.
  • We’re a Tripadvisor brand and Viator partner, offering special perks for those users. Viator users can import tour listings directly into Bókun for easier management. We also offer four free Viator product checks each month and waive Bókun booking fees on reservations from this platform. Bókun connects with Tripadvisor to display customer reviews on both platforms. (We’re also a Premium Connectivity Partner with GetYourGuide.)

Our tour operator software is designed to meet the criteria we discussed earlier, and we offer more affordable, straightforward pricing than our competitors so our platform is accessible for even small one- or two-person teams.

We offer all features at one flat subscription cost ($49), and our booking fees are the lowest in the category (1.5% for online bookings from your website, OTAs, and partners).

We’ll review the key features below, showing how other tour operators use Bókun to sell online, increase bookings, partner with other businesses, and keep operations in order.

Create a Booking Website to Enable Direct Bookings

Our platform provides a user-friendly website builder so you can start selling tours online and enable direct bookings. You can access this website builder for free during your trial to begin creating a custom site.

Our platform provides a variety of website templates (all mobile-friendly and SEO-optimised), and then you plug in the fields. You can add custom colours, images, and logos and then include details about your tour guide company. The booking engine is already installed and ready to go.

Select Website Template: Find a template that represents your business the best

After you design your site, you choose your preferred website name, and we’ll cover the charges to secure the domain.

Our website builder and complimentary domain can save tour operators $3K on average (many teams can spend much more if they’re paying for monthly website maintenance or SEO services). Most website builders charge fees to use their software, then domain charges are highly variable. Some domains cost a few cents, and others cost thousands.

You can watch a quick demo here:

Learn more: Create a Booking Website in 7 Steps

In addition to our website builder, we also offer booking widgets for teams that already have a website. You can embed our online booking engine on your site with just a few clicks.

Enabling online bookings alone improves the customer experience and helps obtain new business. Instead of submitting request forms or emailing you to ask about availability, customers can find you online, learn about your business, see your tours and openings, and instantly book with you.

We worked with Railbiking in Greece to build a booking website and allow their customers to book online. Bookings doubled within the year , and 89% of reservations were made online. ( You can read their story here. )

Grow Your Distribution Network via OTAs & Bókun Marketplace

Creating a booking website is one way to drive business — but people can only book with you there if they know about you. That’s why Bókun connects with dozens of online travel agencies (OTAs) so you can sell tours on the sites people know and use to book travel.

As mentioned above, we’re a Tripadvisor brand and Viator partner, so you can sell tours on those sites and get your business in front of millions (upon millions) of new travellers.

But we also connect with GetYourGuide, Expedia, Headout, Tiqets, Trip.com, and many industry-specific OTAs to help grow your distribution network.

Read more: Trip.com Partners with Bókun to Grow Supplier Reach and Boost Inventory

You can add and remove sales channels at any time through the Sales tools tab. Then, you can manage bookings and availability across all sites in the Bókun calendar.

We recommend small teams start with one major OTA, like Viator, and another regional or niche reseller that is more closely linked to your products.

Don’t list tours on a dozen sites at once and overwhelm yourself. If you see sales from Viator, you could open up more availability on that sales channel or add another major OTA like GetYourGuide. Explore different OTAs related to your niche and test how those perform for you.

In addition, Bókun Marketplace is home to 27K+ suppliers and resellers.

Beyond connecting with OTAs, you can partner with other travel businesses through the Bókun Marketplace. Our network includes other tour and activity operators like yourself, in addition to hotels, resorts, rental providers, and attractions like museums, theme parks, and universities.

Discover partners: The Marketplace gives you access to resellers and suppliers.

Tour operators use our network to:

  • Find resellers to promote their tours — this helps you reach new potential customers and fill your booking calendar.
  • Sell others’ tours and services and grow their business through multiple revenue streams.
  • Build tour packages with partners to offer unique experiences that help them stand out from competitors.

Read more: Venice Tours Achieved 400% Revenue Increase through the Bókun Marketplace

You can establish these relationships and manage all communications and contracts in Bókun. Our system also includes a reporting dashboard where you can see which channels or partners drive the most business. Then, you can use these learnings to inform your growth strategy. (We’ll also cover this reporting dashboard later.)

Design New Tour Listings — Increase Revenue with Add-Ons & Combo Packages

You can design and manage all tour listings in the Experiences tab.

This feature is especially user-friendly because it shows tour operators everything they need to include in listings — you simply walk through the steps in our product builder. (Then, you can create templates from listings to easily build new listings later on.)

Give your experience a short but descriptive name

In the image above, you can see the fields our system prompts you to complete when designing tour listings. You want to brainstorm catchy, attention-grabbing titles, provide detailed itineraries, and include high-quality images and videos from past experiences.

The more you can include to showcase past experiences, the better. We recommend adding at least six images.

Our system also lets you offer Extras (add-ons) with tours — this is a nice way for travellers to customise their experiences, and it also gives you an opportunity to upsell customers and earn more from each booking, increasing your return on investment (ROI).

You can set pricing and availability by product — and you have a few options when setting pricing:

  • Set one flat rate
  • Create pricing categories (offer one rate for children, another for adults, another for seniors, and so on)
  • Offer bulk discounts
  • Set rates for private tours
  • Leverage dynamic pricing rules

Note: Dynamic pricing is an advanced tool that automatically adjusts your rates based on set rules.

Circling back to Railbiking in Greece — after switching to online strategies, they started regularly booking out their calendar, so they wanted to drive additional revenue by using dynamic pricing to increase rates for tours that were especially popular with travellers. Even with increasing pricing, they still booked out (allowing them to earn more without adding more products, partnering with other businesses, or even lifting a finger).

Next, you select your availability rules with our simple-to-use tools; you choose:

  • How customers book with you (if they specify a date and time, just a day, or they buy a general pass)
  • Start and close out dates for experiences (aka, the times of year you offer tours)
  • The specific days of the week the experience is available
  • Departure times

Availability rules populate your calendar, so you don’t have to manage this week by week. You can always adjust specific days or block out certain departure times to accommodate unexpected changes.

Add Availability Rules

Availability also populates across all of your active sales channels and updates as customers book with you, so you can avoid overlap and double bookings.

Manage Staff, Customers, and Behind-the-Scenes Operations

While on the topic of back-office operations, let’s cover some of Bókun’s other tools to keep you organised.

To refresh, we’ve already discussed creating a booking site, channel management, selling on OTAs, and product and availability management — briefly mentioning how you can manage new bookings and real-time availability from the Bókun calendar.

Centralised Booking Calendar

The Bókun booking calendar is your one-stop-shop for managing all reservations . It displays bookings from your website, OTAs, and partner channels and allows you to add offline bookings. (Managing offline bookings is always free!)

Then, you have a bird's-eye view of everything on your agenda and can keep up with any cancellations or rescheduling. You can also assign guides to tours so they can see their schedules.

Mobile Apps

We offer mobile apps for iOS and Android so you and your staff can access the booking calendar while out in the field. You can see who’s scheduled to attend tours (and who specifically is on the guest list) and keep up with last-minute changes or cancellations.

Our apps also have a ticket scanning feature to speed up and simplify guest check-in.

CRM & Automated Communications

The Bókun booking platform includes a CRM, so you don’t have to purchase and integrate this system separately. Our CRM automatically saves customer information — names, emails, addresses — when they contact or book with you. Then, this powers Bókun’s automated communications functionality.

Our system saves you time and gives you confidence that you’re not forgetting any important to-do’s by automatically sending customers booking confirmations, tickets, reminders before tours, follow-ups, and more.

Our ticketing tool lets you design tour tickets (with QR or bar codes) so customers can save them on their mobile devices for a smooth check-in.

We provide a series of templates to customise all types of emails, such as:

  • Thank you’s that can be sent after tours
  • Promotional emails (with discounts, promo codes, etc.)
  • Upselling emails to sell add-ons
  • Retargeting emails to capture abandoned carts or cancellations
  • Newsletters about new experiences or events in your area

Email templates: Pick a base for your template

You can customise templates any which way and choose when they’re scheduled to send (on specific dates, after set actions, etc.). Our system takes care of the rest.

Customer Portals

Bókun also includes customer portals so travellers can view, modify, or cancel tours online at their convenience. Our system automatically emails customers after they cancel or modify a reservation to confirm the accepted changes. Our system sends you a notification and automatically updates your calendar when customers make changes.

(You can also design and schedule customer cancellation emails inviting them to reschedule for a later date.)

Integrations with Payment Processing Systems

Bókun integrates with countless payment gateways — PayPal, Stripe, Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Worldpay, for example — to give customers multiple options to pay online at checkout. We also connect with Klarna so you can provide customers with financing options for pricier experiences.

Add Payment Provider

This improves the booking process as customers can actually confirm bookings and guarantee their spots when making reservations (and they don’t have to wait to pay in person when they arrive, prolonging check-in).

Reporting Dashboard

As we talked about earlier, Bókun includes a reporting system so you can monitor sales performance and a variety of other KPIs. Our system has preset reports to show you:

  • Revenue — See how much you earn from online reservations and break earnings down by source. You can track revenue from offline bookings here, too.
  • Performance of sales channels & partners — See who brings in the most bookings and revenue and invest in more of what’s working for you.
  • Total number of bookings — See how many bookings you earn in a single day, week, or month. You can customise reports to review data over any time frame.
  • Details about bookings — For example, how many travellers per booking (to gauge if you attract families, couples, etc.), if travellers purchased add-ons, which add-ons they purchased, etc.
  • Tours that are booked most often — See which products are most popular and which ones customers pass on.
  • Busy & slow seasons — See which times of year you receive the most bookings and when bookings fall off. Then, you can prepare for busy and slow seasons accordingly; you can hire more staff during busy months, and you could look at which tours are most popular and offer similar experiences during slow seasons.

Experience Sales: Statistics about your bookings and an overview of sales

Bókun App Store

We mentioned earlier that customers appreciate our straightforward pricing — we offer all of our core features to all users for a flat subscription cost. But users can customise Bókun or purchase add-ons through the app store .

We have a variety of tools to support different use cases; most apps are free (like Adventure Photos), but we offer a handful of paid modules (including inventory management, a more advanced reporting suite, a digital waiver solution, and solutions for travel agents).

We also integrate with tools like Zapier, Slack, and Google Calendar; which you can access through the app store.

We offer super low booking fees — 1.5% for online bookings from your site, OTAs, and partners. Plus, we never charge Bókun booking fees on Viator or offline reservations.

Our team is available to answer questions as you get started and can consult with you as you grow to lend insights to your strategies. Our platform supports small tour operator teams, and we offer custom solutions for enterprise and global brands — so Bókun can support you no matter how big you grow.

Resmark homepage: Online Booking Software for Tours, Activities & Experiences

Resmark is a nice tour booking software for small teams because it’s an all-in-one solution, the platform is easy to use, and pricing is affordable.

Resmark lets you receive bookings directly from your site, connect with OTAs, and manage offline reservations; automate back-office tasks like sending customer emails and waivers; and report on revenue and bookings. They don’t offer a self-serve website builder, but they offer website-building services and booking widgets to embed on your site.

Resmark packs a lot under one roof, but their customer experience team is available to help during set-up and training. Then Resmark’s platform and features are designed to save tour operators hours every week, so they have time to work on the business (instead of in the business) — explore growth strategies, add new tours, hire more staff, etc.

The only downside here regarding growth is that Resmark does not offer a reseller marketplace. The platform connects with OTAs to promote tours on travel sites, but it doesn’t have features to connect or collaborate with other businesses in the tourism industry.

Features

  • Website building services
  • Booking widgets
  • Channel management & connections with OTAs
  • Availability management
  • CRM & automated customer communications
  • Digital waiver solution
  • Integrations with popular payment gateways
  • Dynamic pricing & other advanced pricing options
  • Options to sell add-ons
  • Options to create tour packages
  • Advanced booking management tools like notes & task management
  • Inventory management
  • Resource management
  • Reporting
  • Accounting tools

Pricing

Resmark offers two core packages and custom plans for enterprise teams. Both packages include all of Resmark’s booking management tools listed above and access to their online waiver solution (up to 50 free waivers per month).

The differences between the two packages lie in pricing and booking fees.

  • You can opt for no subscription fees (the “free package”) and pay a $500 set-up fee. Resmark also charges 3.5% transaction fees in this package but you can choose to pass those to the customer or cover them yourself.
  • Or, you can pay a $95/month subscription cost and avoid the $500 set-up fee. Resmark also charges lower transaction fees in this plan (2%).

Resmark recommends its “free package” for seasonal businesses or businesses planning to pass customers booking fees. It recommends the paid plan for businesses that operate year-round.

3. Regiondo

Regiondo homepage: Online tour booking software

Regiondo is a good booking solution for small teams because the platform provides the essentials for selling and promoting tours online without overwhelming you with a ton of complex features. The navigation and features are reportedly user-friendly and easy to learn.

Regiondo is a German brand whose solution has historically been popular with small and growing tour companies in the UK. However, they’ve expanded their reach through a recent merger with Rezdy (more on this in a moment) and offer custom enterprise plans to support growing teams.

In addition, they offer solutions to support high-volume ticket sales and packages for travel agents and DMCs/DMOs.

One downside to note with Regiondo is that pricing is expensive, and they charge extra to access and use their partner network. If you want to register as a reseller, you have to purchase the Partner plan separately.

  • A one-click website builder to create custom sites — Regiondo charges an extra $52/month for this feature
  • Online booking engine
  • Product & availability management
  • Reseller network
  • Touch POS to manage walk-up reservations & payments
  • Online payments via Stripe
  • Marketing tools to offer discount codes & request reviews
  • Mobile apps

Regiondo offers a few packages for tour and activity providers:

  • The Starter plan starts at $50/month — it supports two users and grants basic feature access.
  • The Advanced plan starts at $105/month — it supports five users and gives access to more features, like automated communications and options to sell add-ons.
  • The Enterprise plan starts at $210/month — it supports 25 users and grants full platform access.

These rates are entry-level prices; Regiondo offers custom quotes based on what you require from the software. They also charge a 3% system usage fee and a 52¢ ticket fee in each package.

You can choose to be a tour operator or reseller — if you want to do both, you must enrol in (and pay for) both programs. Regiondo does not disclose pricing for Partner plans.

4. Checkfront

Checkfront homepage: The Most Flexible Booking Software for Every Experience

Checkfront might appeal to small tour and activity businesses interested in fast growth because it has hundreds of tools to help tour operators sell online and grow their customer base. (It’s worth noting that Checkfront does not offer a website builder, only booking widgets.)

Small teams like Checkfront’s online booking platform because it’s reportedly easy to learn and highly scalable. They also don’t charge subscription fees; instead, they charge a 3% booking fee for each reservation.

The con worth noting here is that many tour operators find Checkfront’s offerings a little too much; most don’t need hundreds of features to manage operations, so they’re paying for and working around functionality they don’t use. They also say that some important features, like the reporting dashboard, are limited in functionality.

We won’t list all of Checkfront’s features, but here are a few important ones for smaller teams:

  • Reservation system with self-service bookings
  • Online payment options: Checkfront integrates with popular payment processors, connects with your POS, and lets you send custom invoices
  • Real-time, customisable booking dashboard
  • Custom form builders and waivers to send to customers before their tours
  • Channel management
  • Integrations and developer API

Checkfront has two plans:

  • The Growth plan with all of Checkfront’s core features. They do not charge subscription fees here, but 3% booking fees on every reservation. You can choose to cover these or pass them to the customer.
  • Custom plans ( Managed ) include a dedicated account manager who provides training and support through onboarding. These quotes are based on what you require from the software.

Read more: Best Checkfront Alternatives: Comparison Guide

Note: Regiondo and Checkfront both recently merged with Rezdy. Rezdy is typically more popular for growing or enterprise tour guide companies and wouldn’t be our first recommendation for smaller teams.

Regiondo and Checkfront may better cater to this audience; however, existing users of both platforms note changes to features and pricing since this merger. If you’re considering either of these options, this may be something to discuss during your demo call.

5. FareHarbor

Fareharbor homepage: Powerful booking software. Unmatched support.

We’ve added FareHarbor to our list because its pricing appeals to small teams — they don’t charge subscription fees, and customers pay booking fees. Its software solution includes essential booking management tools and features to drive new business (like OTA connections and a reseller network).

FareHarbor might also appeal to small businesses because its team offers a website-building service. Note: This is not an elaborate website development service; it’s still free because they customise a site from their template library — it’s similar to Bókun’s website builder, but you give FareHarbor creative control.

However, the warning we always give about FareHarbor is to consider booking fees.

FareHarbor doesn’t disclose exact booking fees online; they’re variable but can be as high as 6%. If you offer multi-day trips or more expensive tours, these fees could tack a lot to the customer’s final cost, and if they see expensive booking fees at checkout, it could deter them from clicking purchase. (Especially if they see competitors offer similar experiences without the booking fees.)

Customers note that booking fees can negatively impact conversions, so consider how fees could affect your pricing and whether you’re willing to take the risk to avoid subscription costs.

  • Website-building services
  • Online booking widget
  • Customisable booking calendar
  • Connections with OTAs & channel management
  • Product management
  • Staff management
  • Integrations with Stripe
  • Customer portals
  • Fast check-in features & online waiver tools
  • Options to sell memberships

FareHarbor does not charge a monthly subscription; they charge fees for each booking. The fees vary but are as high as 6%. FareHarbor passes these fees to the customer.

Read more: Best FareHarbor Alternatives: Comparison Guide

6. Peek Pro

Peek Pro homepage: More Bookings, Happier Customers.

Peek Pro is another booking management platform for small teams interested in growth strategies.

This option might be more advanced than Checkfront above because it offers automated retargeting tools to increase bookings, Peek Capital to apply for loans, and features to sell memberships, add-ons, and tour packages — in addition to core booking management tools. (Like Checkfront, Peek Pro does not offer a website builder.)

Although customers appreciate Peek Pro’s robust feature set and customer support team, they warn of difficulties in adopting and learning the software.

They say Peek Pro streamlines the booking experience for customers, but learning the features and managing the back end is challenging. (Some also mention set-up fees to get started.) But reviews also say Peek Pro’s team is available to help when you have questions and provides online training resources to answer common questions.

  • Online booking widgets
  • Reservation management
  • Integrations with OTAs & channel management tools
  • Availability & staff management
  • Options to sell memberships, add-ons, bundles, gift cards & vouchers
  • Marketing tools, including customer retargeting
  • Dynamic pricing
  • Fast check-in features, including digital waivers, Kiosk mode, and ticket scanning
  • Customer portals
  • Peek reseller network
  • Peek Capital (to apply for loans)
  • Integrations with online payment processors

Peek Pro does not disclose pricing on their website, but reports say they charge a $199 set-up fee along with booking fees. Fees vary but can be as high as 6%. (So we issue the same warning here as with FareHarbor above.)

Xola homepage: Online Booking Software

Xola’s online booking system might appeal to small teams because:

  • The platform has a super-modern look and feel, with advanced but user-friendly features. Xola also differentiates itself by offering a homegrown booking engine + payment solution. It’s designed to prevent customers from dropping off during checkout and help you see more bookings.
  • Their team offers a website-building service to help you get up and running quickly.
  • They offer complimentary set-up & onboarding, with 24/7 support to help when needed.
  • The platform features the basics to get online and more advanced tools to drive bookings and grow your business.
  • Xola doesn’t charge subscription fees.

However, Xola’s pricing is a lot like FareHarbor’s above. They charge booking fees instead of subscription fees, which can be as high as 6% — but you can cover these yourself instead of passing them to the customer.

It’s also worth noting that Xola requires you to use its homegrown payment portal and charges transaction fees (1.9% + 30¢).

So, you have to consider the cost of your experiences with these other variables to determine if Xola could be a good option for you.

  • Website builder
  • Native payment gateway
  • OTAs & channel management
  • Partner network
  • Marketing & automation tools to drive new bookings & revenue
  • Reporting tools
  • Ticket management solutions (for theme parks and other attractions)

Xola charges a transaction fee (1.9% + 30¢) when customers use their payment gateway. Xola notes that these fees vary for international transactions.

They do not charge subscription fees but, instead, booking fees. They pass booking fees to the customer; these fees vary but are reportedly as high as 6%.
