Its tickets have to be purchased from the Forest Department booking counter present at the Nagarhole National Park or can be booked online. These counters open about 30 minutes before the start of the safaris, and hence it is important to be on time to make the bookings.

The Nagarhole National Park has two distinctive safari zones- Zone A and Zone B. Zone B is close to the Kabini backwaters. The safari tours booked through Jungle Lodges & Resorts can cover only one of these zones at a time. While on the other hand, the Forest Department canter safaris enjoy unrestricted access to both of these zones.

Making Kabini jungle safari booking

The boat, as well as the vehicular Kabini jungle safari bookings, can easily be made through your resort if you are staying in one of the tourism department lodges.

What is Kabini?

Kabini forest is a wildlife sanctuary located in Karnataka, India and is part of Nagarhole National Park. The park is located in the Nilgiri Biosphere Reserve and stretches over 847 sq km. It is home to a variety of animals, such as elephants, tigers, leopards, deer, and more. Additionally, the sanctuary is home to a beautiful Kabini river and tranquil backwaters, making it a popular destination for boat safaris.

Why is Kabini such a popular tourist destination?

In recent years, Kabini has become increasingly popular with tourists for a number of compelling reasons. First, its abundant biodiversity and wildlife, including majestic tigers, leopards, and black panthers, make it a haven for nature lovers. Secondly, Kabini’s stunning landscape, which combines serene backwaters, lush forests, and picturesque landscapes, creates a mesmerizing setting for travelers. Furthermore, Kabini provides an immersive and adventurous experience with wildlife safaris, boat rides, and birdwatching. Kabini forest, like BR Hills Tiger Reserve , was originally a hunting ground for the Maharajas of Mysore. The area was declared a wildlife sanctuary in the 1950s, and hunting was banned. Kabini has since become a popular destination for wildlife enthusiasts and nature lovers.

The types of safaris available in Kabini

Kabini offers a variety of safaris for visitors. Kabini forest consists of two zones, A and B. The following are some of the top things to do while you are here:

Canter bus safari

A budget-friendly way to explore Kabini’s forests is by canter bus safaris. Canter buses are large, open-windowed vehicles that can accommodate groups of people. On weekdays, safaris run from 6.30 to 9 in the morning and 3.30 to 6 in the evening. Over the weekend, the same safari is conducted in two batches, each taking 1.30 hours. Morning safaris are from 6 to 7.30 and then 7.30 to 9. Evening safaris run from 3 to 4.30 and then 4.30 to 6.

It is advisable to check the website for the most recent timings. It is necessary to book the canter bus safari online . Walk-in registration is accepted as long as seats are available. I prefer Canter buses over jeeps since they provide a better vantage point to observe wildlife and take photographs.

Arrive at the Kakanakote Safari Center at least 30 minutes before your safari time. In case you booked your safari online, you need to approach the booking counter to obtain your bus number and seat number.

Canter bus safaris are currently priced at INR 610 + GST per person per safari on weekdays and INR 460 + GST on weekends.

• The mornings in Kabini are usually misty, so it is advisable to take a safari at 7.30 am on weekends.
• Canter buses operated by Karnataka Forest Department are not restricted to a particular zone. Based on the sighting of tigers or leopards at the time of your safari, they can cross the zone.

Premium Canter bus safari

With their premium canter bus, Kabini now offers 3-hour safaris every day. With its 2×1 seating arrangement, this bus offers more legroom and spacious seating. Due to its smaller seating capacity, this bus is less crowded. An important feature of the bus is its semi-transparent roof. Besides this, they have a large rear window that sometimes allows you to shoot wildlife that suddenly emerges from the bushes after you have left.

The premium canter bus cannot be booked online. You will need to arrive at Kakanakote Safari Center much earlier and try your luck with the counter booking. The safaris in this bus start at 6 in the morning and 3 in the evening every day. Safaris are scheduled to last three hours.

Premium canter bus safaris are currently priced at INR 855 per person per safari.

Jeep safari (operated by JLR)

Taking a jeep safari in Kabini is an exhilarating way to explore the wilderness in a private or semi-private vehicle. The safaris are conducted by JLR, which provides well-maintained jeeps and experienced guides. They are typically scheduled for 2-3 hours in the morning and evening. A Jeep Safari in Kabini costs around INR 2,800 + GST per person per safari, which is significantly higher than the canter bus. Because JLR has a limited number of jeeps, in-house guests are given first priority. Depending on available space, other visitors may be accommodated. A jeep can seat a maximum of ten people.

Jeep safaris start from Jungle Lodges and Resorts, about 12 km from Kakanakote Safari Center.

Van safari (operated by JLR)

There is a cheaper option to JLR Jeep Safari in Kabini. A Van safari is similar to a Canter bus safari offered by the Karnataka Forest Department from Kakanakote Safari Center. A Van Safari through JLR costs around INR 2,000 + GST per person per safari.

Note : Each JLR safari vehicle is assigned a specific zone. Vehicles assigned to Zone A cannot enter Zone B and vice versa.

Boat safari (operated by JLR)

Taking a boat safari in Kabini is a unique and serene way to discover the region’s stunning backwaters. Boat safaris are conducted by Jungle Lodges and Resorts (JLR), providing an opportunity to observe the rich birdlife, crocodiles, and other aquatic creatures in their natural habitat. Boat safaris typically operate in the early morning and late afternoon, lasting approximately one to two hours each. Guests staying at JLR are given priority over those staying at other hotels. A Boat Safari in Kabini costs around INR 2,500 + GST per person per safari.

Nature walk and bird watching

What is the best way to get to Kabini?

The most convenient way to reach Kabini is through Mysore, the nearest major city. Kabini is about a 2-hour drive from Mysore. When do they close the Kabini Jeep safari . I am planning to visit by June 20 this year.

I don’t think they close safari in Kabini during the rainy season. I would still check with the forest department though.

Thanks Yuvraj for stopping by. The safari can only be booked online. They do keep some slots for walk-in customers but it is too big a risk to take. Usually the queue starts 2-3 hours before the safari during the peak season and a very few can get it.

In Pursuit of Black Panther – The Ultimate Kabini Safari guide

My opening lines are a tale of all wildlife enthusiasts who come in pursuit of the Big Black Cat – the melanistic leopard or better known as the black leopard in Kabini forest. Many have been lucky to have spotted Blackie or the Black Panther in the first Kabini safari and then, there have been tales of many who have been able to see him only after 10 or more. That, however, does not mean that they always went back disappointed. Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary might just have one Black Panther but it sure has a wide variety of other exotic creatures that more than make up for the missing panther!

Kabini Forest is in fact, one of the best places for spotting leopards . And if you haven’t spotted one in your Kabini Safari, you are most likely to at least spot a tiger and herds of elephants . Then there are sloth bears, exotic birds, tortoises, bats, barking deer, langurs, and….I can go on and on. Personally, Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary safaris have never disappointed me – making this forest of India my favorite place for enjoying the wildlife safari.

A quick background on Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary

Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary actually, encompasses two of the six zones of the larger 650 sq km Nagarhole forest (also, known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park ). The other zones border Coorg and Wayanad Wildlife Sanctuary . The huge deciduous spread is home to over 200 tigers and 100 leopards – which also made it a popular royal hunting ground for the Mysore Maharajas and the British viceroys. Today, one can still spot these majestic cats in almost all the zones but the density and opportunity to see are the highest in Kabini.  

One main reason for this is the Kabini River which gives this area its name and attracts numerous birds and animals around it. The wide and open Nilgiri and Teak plantations that make up the Kabini forest make it easier to spot these creatures. Furthermore, unlike its surrounding forest zones, Kabini is protected and there are no highways or human populations within it, making it secure for the wild.

Which of the Kabini Safaris should you choose?

What? There are more than one type of safaris?

Well, actually there is more than one type of safari and I would classify them based on the gates, the type of safari and their timings. These are organized by the Forest Department of Karnataka directly or by their associate – Jungle Lodges and Resorts. Let me decipher them all for you in this Kabini guide so that you know your options better.

Nagarhole Safaris – Options by Gates

As I mentioned earlier, Kabini is just one of the few zones of the larger Nagarhole forest. The larger area has three main gates from where one can take the safaris.

• Veeranahosahalli Gate near Hunsur
• Nanachi Gate near Kutta, closer to Coorg
• Antharasanthe Gate in Kabini (also, called Dammanakatte or the Kakanakote gate)

Except for the Veeranahosahalli gate, the other gates for Kabini jungle safaris can be booked online using this website . These safaris are done in canters and jeeps. Most of the time you will find that the option of jeep safari in Kabini shows as full. The reason for this is that most of the Kabini jeep safaris are available only through JLR (more on this soon). You can nonetheless, give it a shot else, go ahead and book a Kabini safari on a canter or bus. Each gate has two safaris – one in the morning and the other at around 3 pm. Note that it is better to book at least 3 – 4 days in advance as the canters are limited and get filled very quickly.

While you can expect to see the same wildlife through the various regions, the opportunity to spot is higher at Kabini. Thus, it is best to do a Kabini jungle safari booking for the Antharasanthe Gate .

Kabini Wildlife Sanctuary Safaris by Type

There are two options that you have when it comes to booking the Kabini Safaris – a land safari and a boat safari . Both these options are available twice, every day. The morning ones start at 6 am while the afternoon ones are at 3 pm. The duration of each ranges between 2.5 hours to 3 hours. The experience and the wildlife that you see is what differentiates the two!

Kabini Boat Safari

The Kabini boat safaris begin at the Jungle Lodges (JLR) campus . You can do a Kabini backwaters forest safari booking through your resort. It does not matter which Kabini resort you are staying in for this. Most of them have a tie-up with the JLR desk and all you have to do is ask your resort to book a slot for you in that day’s boat safari. (The morning ones will have to be booked a day in advance) . Your resort might charge you a little extra for the drop and pick-up that they offer to JLR – unless it is a part of their Kabini safari packages.

According to me, t he best time for a Kabini Safari on a boat is during the second half of the day . It gets fairly misty in the morning and you might not have clear visibility when on the boat.

What kind of wildlife can you expect to see with a Kabini Boat Safari?

If you are an avid birder, you will love the Kabini boat safari. From the resident kingfishers, cormorants, ospreys and storks to the migratory rare birds like the the bar-headed geese, I saw them all. What was even more amazing was that I could see them in action at close quarters – swooping and catching their prey, launching and landing and flying close to the water. As the expert boatman guides the vessel around, he will point out to the various land mammals and reptiles. It is almost certain that you will see spotted deers, langurs and elephants. In fact, during my Kabini sightings on the boat safari included so many elephants – herds, babies and tuskers that I finally ceased being amazed by them.

The Kabini river safari allows you to get really close to the Indian muggers . The lazy creatures lie around like mute statues in an open museum. At one point, we got so close that I could count the crooked teeth in the crocodile’s jaw. Of course, I got a start when it suddenly slid into the water right next to the boat! Ooops!

On some lucky days, the people on a boat safari in Kabini have been able to see tigers and leopards by the riverside. It is not uncommon to spot the exotic Malabar hornbills and serpent eagles too, when on a boat ride. On the whole, I found that the Kabini river boat safari was a little more dynamic as compared to the land safari with all the action that went around the river. There was not one dull moment!

Land Safaris – Kabini Jeep Safari and Canter Safaris

If you are looking for Bagheera (Blackie or the Black Panther) and its catty comrades, then it is an easy choice of Kabini forest Safaris. Land safari it is!

There are two ways in which you can explore Kabini by land – one is by way of the Government Canters and the other is by Kabini Jeep Safari. The forest department canters can be booked through the Nagarhole website and have limited availability. You can even book these in person by reaching the Antharasanthe Gate in Kabini a day in advance for the morning safari and around 10 am for the evening safari.

The Kabini Jeep Safaris are exclusive to Jungle Lodges and Resorts and its guests only. These JLR Kabini safaris are included in the stay package of that property. It is not possible to do these jeep JLR safari bookings on your own – though you will find an option on the website but it is almost always shown as full. You can try you luck at the JLR Resorts – if they have any extra seats lefts. This is usually after their guests are accomodated.

If you are staying at any other Kabini resort, then you have two options for a land canter safaris. The first is through the Nagarhole website or approaching the Forest gates directly. The second is through your own Kabini resort that has slots in the canters operated through JLR and forest officials. Recently, there is a new bus (a little luxurious with plush seats) along with the open air canters.

Kabini forest is divided into A zone and B zone. The A zone is largely forest, wooded area while the B zone takes you closer to the Kabini river. Frankly, this is more of a good-to-know fact as you have no control over which zone you will be taken to. The vehicles are divided randomly between the two zones and once you are in a particular zone, you will only be in that area.

Morning or noon safari? Well, experts say that morning safari is always better but frankly, my experience says that it is all on your luck. The few times that I have gone on Kabini safaris, I have had amazing sightings at noon.

What kind of wildlife can you expect to see with a Kabini Forest Safari by land?

BIG CATS – including the Royal Bengal tiger and the leopards . And of course the one exclusive melanistic leopard – Bagheera. I have been lucky to have seen them and yes, in one single Kabini Safari (not the last one but the penultimate one).

It is pretty normal to catch these big cats on the land but to see the leopards on the trees is something else. A Kabini forest safari is one experience that gives you an opportunity to actually spot them climbing, lying down and even jumping off the trees.

Spotted deers, barking deers, wild gaurs and langurs are as common as people in a city. Here and there, you are likely to come across Indian terrapins and tortoises. This set of three were so small and camouflaged.

“ There ….see three Indian Terrapins on the rock?” – said our naturalist

“ Where ? I can’t see them.” – I complained

“ See those rocks, and something coming out of them? ” he says

“ Uh Huh!” – I mumble!

“ Those are the heads of the Terrapin. Focus your lens on those” – he laughed while I gasped at the way his eyes had spotted these tiny creatures without binoculars!

Giant Malabar Squirrels and elephant herds are the other creatures that I have seen in the Kabini forest. It is a little hard to spot the birds in the dense jungle but the few that I did manage to catch were Ospreys and Eagles .

How to book a Kabini safari?

A quick synopsis of what I have already explained – there are two ways to book your Land safari – the first through your resort in Kabini. These resorts have a quota with the canters operated by Jungle Lodges. The charges for the safari might be a little higher considering the transport to and from the Safari gates. Kabini Jeep safaris can only be booked if you are staying with JLR.

The second option is through the forest office. You can head to the Antharasanthe Gate in Kabini and book your spot in the Government canter. Remember to book these Kabini forest department safaris at least one day in advance for the morning. For the evening one, you need to get your spot by 10 am for that day. You can also, book Kabini safari online through the Nagahole website.

For the Kabini river safaris, you have to reserve a place through your own resort. Each resort or hotel in Kabini have their quota with JLR. There is no option to do a Kabini boat safari online booking.

Step-by-step instructions for the Kabini jungle safari online booking

Note that through one user id, you can only book four travelers on the Nagahole-Kabini online ticket website . Here is the step-wise process for a Kabini forest safari booking.

• Click this link of the Nagarhole website to get started.
• Sign up with a username by clicking on the left hand side. After entering the details, the website will send you an email verification.
• Sign in and then select the Kabini gate that you wish to enter from. Note that the Kakankote is the same as Antharasanthe Gate of Kabini
• Pick a date and preferred time for your canter safari in Kabini. . You will see four time slots, two in the morning and two in the evening. Note that these are just deferred departures so that there is no crowding inside the forest. The exit times for the two slots (morning and evening) are the same.
• Next select the type of vehicle. You have an option of a bus or a jeep. You might also, see an option – New Bus. This refers to the canter with plush seats. Most likely you will only be able to find seats on a bus. Jeeps are usually not available.
• Fill in the details on the next screen. Select your government ID proof and remember to carry the same one when you are heading for the Kabini safari.
• Enter the camera details. You will see that based on the type of lens or camera, your prices for the Kabini government safari will differ.
• The next screen will take you to the check-out or payment confirmation. You can pay through UPI, credit or debit card or even online banking.
• Print the confirmation of your Kabini safari booking after paying or take a screenshot of it to present at the gates.

And tada- you have now managed to book safari in Kabini through their website.

How much do the Kabini Safaris cost?

The Kabini forest safari prices are as follows –

• Normal canter safari, Kabini starts at INR 600 per Indian adult and INR 1000 for a foreign national.
• Luxury Kabini canters are priced at INR 850 for Indians
• Jeep safaris in Kabini are priced at INR 2800 per person.

Camera charges are additional. It ranges from INR 600 for cameras with over 200 mm lens to INR 1250 for a video camera. Smaller cameras are charged at INR 250 per camera. Besides these charges, there are park fees and GST charges to be paid.

The Kabini backwaters safari charges may be the same or might differ slightly.

What is the best time to visit Kabini?

The best season to visit Kabini would be between September to May. For birders, the months between December to February is ideal as one can spot a lot of migratory species.

Kabini Jungle Safari timings

Land Canter Safari timings:

• Weekdays : 6:00 am to 9:00 am, 3:00 pm to 6:00 pm
• Weekends: 6:00 am to 7:30 am, 7:30 am to 9:00 am, 3:00 pm to 4: 30 pm, 4:30 pm to 6:00 pm

Kabini Boat Safari timings:

Boat safaris in Kabini are available every day at 6:00 am and 3:00 pm. The duration of the same is between 2.5 hours to 3 hours.

Common FAQs about booking a Kabini forest safari

How to reach kabini .

The closest airport to Kabini is in Bengaluru (275 km). Bengaluru is well connected to not just the rest of India but outside India too. One can hire a cab from the airport to take you straight to Kabini via Mysuru. Alternately, you can book one of the many daily trains from Bangalore to Mysore and then head to Kabini from Mysore.

Mysore is just 90 km from Kabini. Though it has a domestic airport, the frequency of flights is very low. It is best used as a central railway station for Kabini. One can either book a cab online or at the railway station for Kabini.

Where to stay in Kabini?

There are tons of resorts in Kabini that offer you comfortable stay options with good food and activities like Nature walks, mini safaris, kayaking and more. However, note that they are all quite expensive. There are no budget stays in Kabini. Jungle Lodges and Resorts is the most popular stay option in Kabini but it does get booked fairly quickly during the peak season.

Besides JLR, you have options like The Serai . Kabini Waterwoods , Kabini Evolveback , Kaav Safari Lodge , Red Earth and the Bison. All these really get busy and it is recommended that you book them as early as possible. I have stayed with Kabini waterwoods and Kaav safari lodge . I loved both these and you can see why by checking out the given links.

Other than these, you also have the forest dormitories that you can book through the Nagarhole forest department website.

How many Kabini wildlife safaris should I book?

At least two land safaris and one boat safari in Kabini is ideal.

Is Kabini worth it?

A big yes from me! Kabini wildlife reserve is one of the most under-rated forests and full of surprises. The density of animals in this small forest is quite huge and that ensures some good sightings for its visitors.

Additional travel tips for Kabini safaris

• Make sure that you carry your Government ID cards as ID proofs. If you have done an online Kabini safari booking, then ensure that the ID that you have entered while filling the form is the same as what you present at the gate.
• Wear comfortable cotton clothes with muted colors like greens, browns or blacks. Carry a scarf or a hat to protect your hair.
• The Kabini safaris can get really dusty. You will find a fine layer of red sand over you once you finish the safari. There is no avoiding the same.
• Do not make loud noises and attract attention. Put your phones on silent during the wildlife safari
• Getting off the vehicles during the safaris in Kabini is strictly prohibited.
• Carry lots of water and stay hydrated. Keep some dry snacks if you wish.
• No plastic items are allowed inside the forest. You will have to remove them before you start the safari.
• There are rest-rooms at the Kabini safari gates.

I havent done a safari yet and I do plan to do one in Africa to see all the ‘Lion King’ animals however I would also love to check this safari out. I am a huge lover of big cats, and to see tigers, panthers and leopards in the wild, I am there! Now I just got to check where Kabini is as I never heard of the place. Have bookmarked this page for furture reference ust in case I want to see those beautiful creatures. 🙂 (My kids sure would love a safari as well right now, much better than them keep watching Discovery Channel during lockdown here in the UK)

Ooh! I would love to do a boat safari. We went on a true safari, which was only by land, but that sounds like such a great option! I wish there were a few budget stays in the area, but with it being a once in a lifetime trip, it’s ok to splurge a bit. I love seeing animals in their natural habitats! 🙂

Wow! Look at all that magnificent cats you’ve got to see on Land Safari. I will definitely do this when I visit Kabini. Other animals are so attractive, too. The elephants, the monkey, the birds… They look happy to be in their habitat. The Boat Safari looks cool, too, as you get to see the elephants by the river side. I have never seen a wildlife sanctuary before (which is kind of sad), but I am planning go on a safari in Africa. However, after seeing what a magnificent experience Kabini is, makes me think I should add this to the list also. Woah Ami! That first picture of the leopard would convince literally every animal lover to add Kabini in their bucket list. And seriously, I didn’t even know there were more than one kind of Safaris one could choose! The boat safari looks amazing and I would totally opt for it if pressed for time. It is sad that there aren’t any budget options in the area, but I guess managing and maintaining a place in such a forest without disrupting the area would not be cheap, plus this is a once in a lifetime experience so I guess it is all worth it!

Oh my God you saw a tiger? That has been my wishlist for so long and unfortunately I have not seen a tiger in the wild. I have seen leopards a few times and once when I was in Kabini as well. I love going to Kabini over and over again and I will definitely go back when I am in India next time.

For the boat safari, you will have to go to the resort and book your tickets. Either way, you can only board from the resort. Safari counter usually gives you tickets only for the land safari.

Jungle lodges would be the closest. However, all the resorts in Kabini offer a drop and pick up to the gate or Jungle lodges as a complimentary service. As for the capacity, the jeep has a seating for 6 but is only available through Jungle lodges.

Kabini is definitely worth a visit. It’s an adventure hotspot near Bangalore and Mysore, famous for thrilling jeep and boat safaris, and a paradise for bird watchers and trekkers. The area’s diverse wildlife, including rare black leopards and elephants, makes it a unique experience. Ideal for nature enthusiasts looking for an exciting escape.

Kabini, situated at the end of a 240 km drive southwest of Bengaluru, is a magical place. Think of it as connecting wonderland between the Western Ghats to its west and the beginning of the Nilgiri Biosphere to its east. It is a stretch of farmland and dense forest surrounding a man-made dam, made popular by one Colonel John Wakefield, fondly remembered by locals as ‘Papa Wakefield’, a retired British Soldier who fell in love with the people, forests, and elephants of Kabini and whose dedicated and effective wildlife conservation techniques gives us this world-renowned eco-tourism hotspot, today. 

Kabini is all about elephants, tigers, black leopards, and other flora and fauna. Kabini is also about tribal settlements called ‘Haadis’, rivers, culture, and history. Stretching into Wayanad of Kerala, the backwaters present unique natural vistas that must be a part of your Kabini Itinerary. Here is a list of 7 things to do in Kabini, that will help you answer – is Kabini worth visiting.

UNDERSTANDING THE TOURIST AREA OF NAGARHOLE

Before you decide to book a safari in Kabini or indeed planning a trip here, let’s get a few important details jotted down. The safari area or tourist zone in this area of Nagarhole is divided in 2 zones separated by the state highway going into Kerala.

Kabini backwaters and the lush forests surrounding the backwaters is called Zone B. The best experiences here are in the dry months which offer 3 iconic sightings. Herds of elephants crossing over from the Bandipur Tiger Reserve into Nagarhole. Epic battles of huge tuskers fighting over large herds of elephants made up of females, young calves and a majestic matriarch. Third, my favorite, legendary tiger hunting scenes which eclipse the awe inspiring backdrop of the water and forest. 

The dense jungles on the other side of the state highway, called Zone A. Sightings the black panther, tigers and leopards are most common in this zone. The waterholes in Zone A are always a hub of activity and any regular will tell you that this is the Zone they hope to enter. so if you are wondering is Kabini worth visiting? we need to first need to understand the place. 

1) JEEP SAFARI FROM JUNGLE LODGE’S KABINI RIVER LODGE

Perhaps the best way to explore the jungles of Kabini, this is also the most expensive option. You get into a modified jeep with an experienced driver who knows the forest and its wildlife like the back of his hand.

The best part of this safari is that you leave a wiser person. The driver/guide will happily explain everything about the flora and fauna, animal habits, how to read your environment, and shows you how to interpret the noises and sounds of the forest. You get to see pugmarks of big cats, endangered birds, listen and analyze alarm calls of prey, and even spend an extra minute or two when a sighting excites you.

The jeep takes between 6-9 people in total and your experience is as good as your rapport with the guide. These guys always have interesting stories about the forest and its history, do chat up with them.

However, this experience comes at a price. Depending on how you book the jeep safari (outlined later) you would pay anything between INR 2200 to 3000 per person. Another caveat with the Kabini Jeep Safari is that the jeeps are randomly assigned to either Zone A or Zone B.  I once had a zero-sighting evening in Zone A, got back to the lodge, and was treated to a narration of a tiger hunt in Zone B, that very safari session. 

How to book? The best way is to ask your resort to book on your behalf with jungle lodges I once walked into Jungle Lodges Kabini River resort and request the Manager, the enthusiastic Mr. Gangaswamy, if he could accommodate 4 of us on the evening safari and he obliged as it was a less busy weekday. So try your luck with that too.

BEWARE: Anyone else claiming to get you onto a jeep safari in Kabini is a scamster. The jeep safaris here are ONLY and ONLY operated by Jungle Lodges.

2) BOOK A CANTER SAFARI FROM ANTHRASANTHE FOREST OFFICE, SEATS 20 PEOPLE

This is the favorite option among people coming from nearby places on a Kabini day trip. A low price tickets gets you a seat on one of 3 vans operated by the Karnataka Forest Department. The canter drives around the same dirt roads inside the Nagarhole Tiger reserve and the sightings are very good.

The van option is perfect if you are ok with large crowds around you. Don’t expect to experience the “wild” as you are accompanied by tourists that are here to tick off Kabini rather than wildlife enthusiast that want to read the forest.

So why take this option? Other than being cheap, these vans can Criss Cross into Zone A and B at will. So that means that if there is a once in a lifetime sighting happening on the banks of the Kabini backwaters, your van guide will try his best to get you to it. Another reason is value for money. I have experienced far more big cat sightings in these canter safaris than in the Jeep Safari, which may be unique in my case.

Be aware that this site doesn’t work at times. The alternate way is to reach the ticket booking counter located  here . Be sure to reach the ticket counter half an hour before the safari timing mentioned below.

3) BAVALI, CHEKADI BRIDGE, AND THE BALLE ELEPHANT CAMP

There are various times we have skipped the safari on the day of arrival. Either because we are too tired for a 3 hour bumpy ride, or I have friends with me for whom a safari is less important than just having a good time. Or I might have dragged along people who love nature but not necessarily the safari types. Kabini has many things to other than the safari.

One such activity is a drive through the forest for a simple tea and snack at the border of Karnataka and Kerala at Bavali. This is a border village and the 1 hour drive takes you on the state highway which divides Zone A and B. depending on the time of day you are very likely to sight animals on this drive.

For the more adventurous, Bavali is close to a Sholiga tribal Haadi. I have developed a close friend who takes us to these haadis where we are treated to honey and tapioca which is always divine. These tribals also have a ton of brave stories which remind us of how life really is when man and beast are neighbors.

A short drive from Bavali into Wayanad in Kerala takes you to the only bridge on the Kabini backwaters, the Chekadi Bridge. The walk to this bridge is about 10 minutes through the forest. You are constantly reminded of being in the wilderness by elephant dung on this short route. But getting to the bridge and the view is spectacular. Return before 6pm to the forest gate and renter the forest at Balle Elephant Camp. The elephant camp is on one of the channels of the backwaters and the staff there are friendly enough to chat up about the elephants they manage for various tasks that are performed to maintain the national park.

Note: the forest gate closes after 6pm. So, ensure you get back in time.us

4) KABINI RIVER LODGE BOAT SAFARI

A unique experience in Kabini is the boat safari operated, again, by Jungle lodges. You join 12 other people on a motorboat, which is rather well maintained, and cruise the backwaters till you enter the national park via water. Here the boat slows down and caresses the banks on the lookout for wildlife coming in for a drink. The birdlife you sight on this tour, in my experience, is unparalleled to anything else in the south of India. I once had the luck of sighting a huge crocodile sunbathing on a little island within striking distance of a family of otters cracking open freshwater clams in the shallows.

One common sight is herds of herbivores – Indian gaurs, spotted deer, the odd sambar family, and herds of migrating elephants feeding on the grasslands left by receding backwaters.

And then the jackpot. If you are lucky, really lucky, you will see a tiger hunt that sends shockwaves of alarm calls through the open airways above the water. Sometimes for kilometers. On a warm summer evening in 2012, I had the fortune of a sighting from the Jeep Safari that made me wish I was on the boat. At around 5 pm, during a rather actionless drive in Zone A, we heard the reliable alarm call of a sambar deer reverberating through the forest coming from the backwaters. We hurried to the backwaters and were treated to a stampede far away in the distance with unmistakable stripes of black and fire in hot pursuit. Just 50 ft away in the water was a boat with gold class tickets to the action happening in front of them while we were left conjuring up imagined scenes of the hunt, we only got a glimpse of.  

Do note though, the boat safari is advisable only when the water recedes during the end of winter and summer months. Nothing much happens here during the monsoon.

Boat Safari in Kabini river is done twice a day- 3.30 PM to 6.15 PM and 6.30 AM to 9.15 AM

Cost: This activity will cost as much as the jeep safari. As your resort to arrange this which is done via jungle lodges and resorts.

Best time: I suggest going on this activity only when the backwaters recede in late winters and summers. Also, the first week on monsoons is a truly social time to go on the boat safari. The rains add a certain magic to a parched landscape.

5) A DAY LONG ROAD TRIP TO REMEMBER KABINI-AGASANAHUNDI-KUTTA-WAYANAD-BAVALI- KABINI

By far my favorite activity when I go to Kabini for 3 or more days. This 150 km drive takes you through 2 states, 2 tiger reserves, multiple cuisines, 3 climatic zones, and unlimited possibilities.

Begin your day by visiting the Taraka Dam around 5 km from the Dammanakatte Forest office. Completely unexplored by tourists, this dam is a hidden gem in the Kabini circuit. Locals sell fish, tea and if you’re lucky you might be allowed to the top of the dam from where views of the Nagarhole Tiger reserve on the far side are unbeatable. Elephants, deers, Gaurs and the rare tiger can be seen from this vantage point.

Taraka Dam to Agasanahundi gate

17km from Taraka Dam on SH 33 you reach the least used entry point into the Nagarhole Tiger Reserve at Agasanahundi. The drive is through farms and villages that showcase rural Karnataka in a unique perspective that highway cruisers miss out on. The forest guard here takes basic details and gives you a pass with a time limit to pass through the forest area. Be sure to mention that you plan to exit through Kutta at the Nanchi gate.

This is the best part of the drive. You pass through pristine wilderness and can sight wildlife depending on your luck, speed, and level of staying absolutely silent. 3 out of 10 times I have seen a tiger on this route. Elephants, Gaur, spotted deer, and sambar deers are omnipresent. This 25 km stretch is to be covered slowly and should take an hour. As you exit the Nanchi Gate on the other end of your drive you are greeted by the coffee estates of Coorg. I cannot help but stop for a coffee either at Safari inn or at any small place closer to Kutta which is just about 5km from Nanchi gate.

Kutta to Thirunelli Temple

As you enter Kutta just before the bus stand is the sharp left turn towards Wayanad, Kerala. This is also where you find a conveniently placed petrol pump to refuel or check your tyres. Between the petrol pump and the Kerala border, you drive through winding roads crisscrossing coffee estates, forests, and small little hamlets. The border will take you into the densely forested evergreen ecosystem of Tholpetty wildlife sanctuary, Wayanad, Kerala. Drive slow for 2 reasons – fast cars and elephant crossing. You will cross the Tholpetty safari point which is the starting point for the Tholpetty safari, where around 30 jeeps venture in twice a day into a small tourist area of the national park, I have never gone on this. Around 3 km from this point is a road cutting to the right that goes to thirunelli Temple – An ancient temple situated in midst of the wild. Take this right and it’s time for a tea and snack at Kuttettan’s Unniappam, a tiny shack right on this junction. Everything is hearty and fresh.

This road to Thirunelli is strewed with elephant dung and it’s known for elephant, tiger, Dhole, and leopard sightings. So drive slowly and you will be rewarded.

The temple is itself beautiful and you get majestic views of the western ghats here. Do check out Jungle retreat, a warm cozy resort that boasts of wildlife sightings from the verandah of your room! A separate blog on that place will come soon.

Thirunelli temple to Bavali, Karnataka border

Drive through the Tholpetty national park for 15 km to reach Kattikulam from where you turn right towards Karnataka and Bavali border. You are still well within a tiger reserve and expect wildlife sightings anytime. There is a small restaurant here called Wayanad Kitchen which has always served us hot homely Kerala food do check it out, you won’t regret it.

On the way, you could also drive down to Kuruwa Dweep, a 950-acre island on the river Kabini which is declared a protected bird sanctuary. Reach Bavali and delay your entry into the Nagarhole forest as close to 6 pm as you can.

The thrills of an evening drive through a tiger reserve is how you end the day’s road trip. Exit in time and reach your resort. Share your experience over a cozy bonfire.

Sightings are very common at this time, so keep your eyes and ears glued to your surroundings.

This one-day road trip is the best way to see the Kabini Nagarhole ecosystem. And is highly recommended for the nature junkie who wants to do something different.

6) WHERE TO STAY IN KABINI

This is a question that needs a separate blog to answer. But here is a quick overview to help you plan.

If Safari is your main goal, look no further than the Kabini River Lodge. It’s expensive, average food, average rooms, but the best guides and safari options.

Medium Luxury – The Serai , The Bison and Red Earth resorts. A luxurious stay, good food, and well-planned activities are assured to you.

Super Luxury – Evolve back set across the backwaters is a high-end uber-luxurious option.

Best of all worlds – Water Woods . My favorite. Well maintained rooms, awesome food, slightly expensive and closets to the Jungle lodges safari point. I love the fact that I can get a personally arranged bonfire by the backwaters every night I am here.

Budget and super practical – Kabini River View Resort. Located very close to the Dammanakatte Forest office from where the canter safari starts this is the place to go while you’re doing Kabini on a Budget. Clean rooms, good food, and pleasant staff present you with a nice option.

7) IN CONCLUSION – IS KABINI WORTH VISITING AND DOES IT LIVE UP TO ITS HYPE

For a wildlife enthusiast and nature lover, this place is paradise and will be visited multiple times a year. What makes this place attractive is the prospect of doing multiple things other than just a safari. A lot will also depend on where you stay. All in all this destination is a riverside getaway, a wildlife getaway, and can be a base to explore other hidden gems in the area. What can be promised is a different experience every time you go to Kabini. So yes, Kabini is worth visiting with friends, family, as a couple, or even solo.

Kabini Jungle Safari at Nagarahole National Park

She glided out into the glade, from deep within the dense woods. I had come for her but had not expected her to show herself so soon and so easily. Holding my breath, I tried to capture her every movement. She was at quite a distance and I worked hard to make the most of the opportunity, hardly expecting her to grace me with a closer presence.

But that day she was in a very generous mood and mode and as she nonchalantly sauntered nearer and nearer towards me and sashayed right past my safari bus, I thanked my stars (and her stripes) and as the driver cruised skillfully and gently alongside, my hyper active camera  greedily seized her every frame until it had had its fill of her.

But can one really have one’s fill of the tiger in the wild? As she swished her tail and eventually strolled back again into the cover of the forest, I gazed longingly at her retreating rear, wishing that the magic would continue and that she would turn and return to do the cat walk for me once more … at least once more.

Yes, spotting animals in the wild is an insatiable thirst but I had to be satisfied with what was considered a very fortunate 10 minute sighting, on my maiden safari in the Kabini region of the Nagarahole National Park and I thanked the glorious jungle for its magnanimous gesture.

This was my first safari in South India and in addition to the Diva whom I just spoke of, I also encountered many other exciting jungle beings and if you are curious to know about them, then all you have to do is read on!!!

Kabini refers to a section of the Nagarahole National Park and this lies in the Mysore district of Karnataka state in India. Since this is the part that I visited, my narration will cover my experiences here. Hopefully I will have the pleasure of exploring a different safari via the other gates of this forest in future.

About Nagarahole National Park  –

Nagarahole National Park is one of South India’s premier forests and a major attraction for wildlife enthusiasts. Earlier known as Rajiv Gandhi National Park, it derives its present name from the literal translation of serpentine stream, many of which flow through the forest (in Kannada, naga is serpent and holaey is stream).

Straddling the districts of Coorg and Mysore, this park is a part of the Nilgiris biosphere reserve and occupies a core area of around 645 sq km and a buffer area of around 200 sq km, totalling to nearly 850 sq km.

Originally considered the private hunting ground of the Mysore Maharajas, this forest was eventually designated as a wildlife sanctuary in 1955. It was accorded the status of National Park  in 1988 and further in 1999, it was declared as the 37th Project Tiger Reserve  of India. India currently has 54 tiger reserves across the nation.

The Kabini river is a major river that flows through the park and Kabini also refers to  a part of the Nagarahole National Park which has its own gate for the safari.

Nagarahole is contiguous with the Bandipur Tiger Reserve which is located to its South East. The Kabini River separates the Nagarahole National Park from the Bandipur National Park.

The Nagarahole road through the jungle is open for general traffic other than 2 wheelers, 3 wheelers and goods vehicles. However there are timings and vehicles are prohibited from 6 pm to 6 am every day by closing the entry gates into the park. Also during the daytime, entry and exit times for each vehicle are recorded and one cannot loiter indefinitely in the forest.

Apart from the general vehicular movement, there are safaris which are operated so that the public can enjoy the forest and the beautiful life forms it holds within.

Wildlife –

The deciduous forest is home to several species of fauna and flora. Some of the notable inhabitants are tigers, leopards, gaurs, elephants, sloth bears, wild boars, barking deer, sambar deer, mongoose, Malabar squirrels, Asiatic Wild Dog also called dhole and of course lots and lots of spotted deer (chital) and langurs.

Avifauna thrives in this jungle with over 250 species of birds and the park has its fair share of reptiles too.

Safari options at Nagarahole – 

The safaris are operated by Jungle Lodges and Resorts (also commonly referred to as JLR), an eco-tourism hospitality brand by the Government of Karnataka which has its presence across destinations that cover adventure, beaches, heritage, nature and wildlife.

Apart from this, the other option is the safari operated by the forest department.

It is useful to know that the park has 2 separate zones for the safaris called Zone A which is mostly through wooded area and Zone B which is closer to the Kabini waters. The safari conducted by JLR  is permitted to cover only one of these zones at a time and their vehicles are accordingly labelled as Zone A or Zone B. However, the Forest Department canter bus safaris are allowed seamless access across both the zones.

There are 3 safari gates for the park namely the Nanachi Gate near Kutta, the  Kakanakote Gate near Kabini and the Veeranahosahalli gate near Hunsur (which currently does not seem to offer bookings on the online portal)

One can choose the gate as per their convenience.

The Kakanakote gate is nearer for travellers from Mysore and Bangalore and the Nanachi gate is convenient for those approaching from Coorg side.

Types of safaris –

There are 3 types of safari possibilities which are the Jeep, Boat and Canter (bus) safaris.

The jeeps are almost exclusively offered only to guests of JLR and guests of resorts which have a safari tie up with JLR. The safaris are usually a part of the booking package.

Boat safaris are conducted on the Kabini Backwaters Forest by the Karnataka Forest Department. Booking assistance is given by the resorts where one stays.

Managed by the forest department, the canter bus safaris are low cost and open to the general public and each bus can accommodate around 20 people. A newer and more comfortable bus has been recently introduced with a more expensive ticket. This vehicle has plush seating in a 2 + 1 row pattern unlike the older buses which have 2 + 2 seats in every row.

Safari details – 

Timings –

The forest department bus safaris are operated in the morning and evening and the timings are the same throughout the year irrespective of the season.

On weekdays (Monday to Friday) the duration is 2.5 hours and timings are –

Mornings – 6.30 am to 9.00 am

Evenings – 3.30 pm to 6.00 pm

Weekends (Saturday and Sunday) offer 4 safaris per day of 1.5 hour duration each.

Mornings – 6.00 am to 7.30 am and 7.30 am to 9 am

Evenings – 3.00 pm to 4.30 pm and 4.30 pm to 6 pm.

Booking and contact – 

The canter safari can be booked at the Forest Department booking counter at the safari gates or can also be booked online.

Online sales begin a month in advance and only 4 tickets can be booked from one person’s account.

The live counters open an hour before the safari begins and only 1 ticket is given per person.

50% of the tickets are reserved to be sold across the counter but it is advisable to pre book online since one cannot predict the queues and on-the-spot availability especially on holidays.

Also, seat number allotment is done just before the safari begins, so even those with pre-booked tickets have to visit the counter at least 30 minutes ahead of time, to get the seats assigned.

The safari tickets are non refundable and non changeable.

Bus/Canter Safari –

Monday to Friday – Rs 600 + tax for Indians and Rs 1000 + tax for foreigners

Saturday and Sunday – Rs 450 + tax for Indians and Rs 750 + tax for foreigners

Note – The tickets for the new bus are not listed online as of now and have to be bought at the counter. I paid Rs 855 inclusive of tax on a weekday. The pricing details are not yet available on their website.

Safari charges are periodically increased, hence please refer to the website for the latest figures. Camera charges are extra and depend on the equipment.

We also had to pay parking charges despite the parking being by the roadside outside the gate. We paid Rs 59 for the car.

My safaris – 

Well after imparting so much knowledge to you, I think I can snatch a paragraph or two to brag about my own experiences during this trip 😎 So allow me to give you a quick narration of my time in the Kabini jungle.

I had booked 3 safaris because as they say, the more the merrier and of course statistically one would hope for greater probabilities of spotting creatures of interest. While every being in the forest is a blessing to behold, one can be forgiven for being partial to the big cats who up the excitement quotient whenever they are sighted.

My first safari was on a Thursday afternoon which meant a 2.5 hour ride through the jungle. The new bus which I have mentioned about, was fortunately available and we had a very comfortable drive with a decent amount of space to move around during sightings.

And yes we were granted the ‘darshan’ (sighting) of the big one, albeit mostly only the head because he was too comfortable sitting among the tall grass to bother moving around for us. Well a tiger is a tiger is a tiger … and a good enough capture for a first safari, so my camera and I were reasonably satisfied.

The gaurs were more generous with displaying themselves and I got my fill of quite a few, including one thumpingly large chunky specimen who seemed to be quite ancient.

The rest of my catch included a big, plump mongoose who was too fast to get a sharp shot, barking deer, innumerable spotted deer and langurs, a very sedate peacock and an a couple of elephants who revealed a baby in their midst when they began moving.

And yes there was a fleeting glimpse of a distant leopard and big black sloth bear but if my camera does not capture, it does not count for me 😏

The second safari was on Friday at 6.30 am, for which I was at the gate at 6 am as stipulated. This bus was the regular canter and after being spoiled by the better bus on the previous day, I found it a bit cramped.

However the sight of a pack of Dholes loping along the jungle trail, soon made me forget all discomfort and I revelled in their antics until they eventually slunk back into the woods. The dhole is the Asiatic wild dog and in India it is found in a few regions of the Western and Eastern ghats and the central Indian mountains. It is categorized as Endangered, on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) list.

Well the morning had begun well and was continuing likewise with the next offering, which was a glimpse of a Crested serpent eagle glaring from its perch high upon a tree.

Our hopes rose equally high, expecting a continuation of great sightings but alas fate had other plans for us and our bus suddenly broke down right in the middle of what could have been a very fulfilling safari. The rescue bus which came to pick us up was an old, ramshackle, out of commission contraption and just like the sorry state of the vehicle, our fauna count also remained very poor and the rest of the safari went by with nothing significant to show.

Well, as they say ‘Hope springs eternal etc etc’ … and since we had one more safari to look forward to the next morning, we tried to remain optimistic, though the shorter duration of the Saturday safari, meant less chances of spotting wildlife. Also, our 7.30 am safari being the second one for the morning, it not do much for our spirits to learn that the earlier batch had returned with nothing significant.

But sometimes even though one goes in with low or no expectations, the moody forest likes to surprise them. So it was with a rush of adrenaline that we spotted this majestic being stroll out of the woods and onto the road right besides our vehicle, giving us a full 10 minutes of full tiger, for our eyes to feast on from all directions. The thrill and awe and excitement that I felt, is not easy to describe, hence I will let my camera present the rest of this encounter.

Well after this I was so satiated and happy, that I even bothered to generously click a picture of the ubiquitous deer which my camera normally snobbishly ignores.

The weekend safari albeit shorter, managed to be the best of the 3 and this goes to prove yet again that safari sightings are quite the gamble and heavily dependent on the vagaries of fate.

Safaris are a very addictive activity and I will hopefully be back again someday, sometime, some-forest.

Visitor Profile – 

Guests of all ages are permitted at on the safari. However, it is unwise to bring little children who may not understand the need for silence in a forest. There is also no access for the mobility challenged and the jungle trails can be quite bumpy and uncomfortable and hence not suitable for those with relevant health issues.

Where to stay – 

Kabini is generally known as a high budget destination due to the many luxury resorts which have been established here. However, there are a few homestays too for the budget conscious traveller.

During my trips to Kabini, I stayed at the beautiful luxury resort Red Earth Kabini when I visited in 2017 and during my recent visit in October 2023, I stayed at a homely and comfortable homestay called RathnaPrabha Farm .

Jungle Lodges and Resorts (JLR) the government run chain of jungle stays, also has it presence here and is one of the preferred stay options, being a ‘one stop shop’ for boarding, lodging and the safari which is accompanied by experienced guides. One can choose from a range of combination packages while booking.

Many of the private luxury resorts also have an association with JLR, which permits their guests to avail exclusively of the JLR safaris.

Best time to visit – 

Kabini is a year round destination and is open through all seasons.

However, the peak time is considered to be during October to March weather wise and April and May for better sightings in the jungle. June to September is the monsoon period and while this is also a great time to be amidst the lush and verdant rain washed surroundings, there is a chance of safaris getting cancelled due to bad weather.

Phone and internet connectivity – 

Signals are not all that bad inside the forest and to some extent, phone and internet access is sufficiently reliable, barring a few random spots along the way.

What you should carry – 

Warm wear is advisable in the non summer months because mornings and evenings can get quite chilly on the safari.

In the warmer seasons, it is better to wear light cottons.

Caps, masks (the safari trails are quite dusty), cameras, binoculars, comfortable footwear, drinking water and such items will come in handy. Food items are not permitted on the safari.

As always, carry your Aadhaar or any photo Government id copies.

Additional Information – 

The Kakanakote gate has a reasonably usable washroom. There is no option to use the washroom for the duration of the safari.

There is a small stall selling basic packaged snacks and water.

Parking is available and is kerbside outside the gate but despite that, it is to be paid for.

Getting there – 

By air –  The nearest Airport is the Mysore Airport, which is less than 100 km away. This airport has very limited flights.

The nearest major airport is the Kempegowda International Airport in Bangalore which is 270 km away from the park.

Train – The nearest major railway station is the Mysore Railway Station (70 km) followed by Bangalore (210 km).

Cabs or private vehicles are the best means of transport from the airports/stations.

Road – There are excellent roads leading to Nagarahole National Park from the surrounding major cities. Getting there by private vehicle or cab is the best way from Mysore (around 90 km) and Bangalore (around 220 km).

Which time is best to do boat safari this month that’s March – morning or afternoon ?

And for keep safari which time is best – morning or afternoon

I have not done boat safaris but I hear that in the hotter months it is better to do the evening one because the animals get thirsty and come to the water.

Jeep and bus safaris are all the same whether morning or evening because sightings depend a lot on luck in any case. In the morning bus safari I chose the second session because the early session was very foggy and sightings would not be so easy. I got good sightings both in the morning and evening during my safaris. Also the JLR jeeps are allowed only in their respective zones, whereas the buses can cut across zones and cover a larger area in the forest .

Can you kindly let us if we can get cabs easily if we book safari online .

As the resorts are charging too high for the same

It depends on where you are staying. You can come by cab directly if you are coming from Bangalore. Please specify where exactly you are looking for.

Kabini orange country to nagarhole national park

You mean Evolve Back? It was earlier called Orange County. I have no idea where you can get a non resort cab if you are staying at Evolve back. But I know that they have tie ups with JLR for Jeep safari in the Kabini zone. I don’t know if there is alternate transport from the resort to the Nagarahole Safari.

Do you have any idea at what time online safari booking opens. I checked on 12 Feb between 00:00 to 01:15 and booking was not open for 12 March. But when I checked in morning around 09:00 all seats for gypsy and new bus were already booked. Only getting option to book old bus.

Thank you 🙂 As far as I know, the online safari booking is always open. Maybe the server was down when you tried? We had booked a couple of days in advance. They also have a limited quota for online.

Wildlife Safari Details

Safaris are conducted into the Nagarhole National Park twice a day, every day. They are done so on land and river. The land safari is organized on shared 9-seater jeeps and 20-seater canters, while the river safari is organized on a shared 20-seater boat. As the numbers of seats for safaris are limited, we recommend booking your safaris upon making your reservation to ensure your park drive slot. Seats are allotted on a first come, first serve basis. The safaris may be availed at an extra cost. Details are as below -

• Morning – 5.45 am to 9.45 am
• Evening – 2.30 pm to 6.30 pm
• Jeep – INR 2,600/- per person, per safari
• Canter / Boat – INR 2,200/- per person, per safari
• Jeep – INR 3,200/- per person, per safari
• Canter / Boat – INR 2,800/- per person, per safari
• Below 70 mm and all Point-and-Shoot cameras – INR 300/- per lens, per safari
• 70 to 200 mm – INR 900/- per lens, per safari
• 200 to 500 mm – INR 1,200/- per lens, per safari
• Above 500 mm – INR 1,800/- per lens, per safari
• Video Camera – INR 1,200/- per lens, per safari
• All guests are advised to maintain the highest levels of hygiene, not limited to wearing of masks and washing of hands
• All guests are advised to maintain social distancing parameters
• All guests are advised to carry their own masks and sanitising equipment
• All guests are advised to not travel should they be showing any symptoms of COVID-19

CANCELLATION POLICY

Confirmed bookings may be altered or cancelled if intimation in writing reaches the company as per the following terms:

• cancellation charges of 10% of the total booking amount.
• 100% credit of value paid for future date reservation – Postponement would be permitted on any date except the blackout dates.
• Between 7 to 14 days prior to check-in: Cancellation charges would be 50% of the full booking amount.
• Within 7 days prior to check-in: Cancellation charges would be 100% of the full booking amount.
• Confirmed bookings may be altered /cancelled only if intimated in writing to us 30 days prior to the booked date of check-in.
• We levy a charge of 50% of the total cost of the booked period for any cancellations made between 30 days and 15 days prior to the date of check-in.
• Any cancellation made less than 15 days prior to check in would result in no refund of the total cost of the booked period.
• All internet bookings will attract 10% cancellation charges.
• All rates are subject to change without prior notice.

RESERVATION POLICY

• As per the standard practice at Safari Lodges around the world, we do not permit children below 10 years of age at the Kaav Safari Lodge.
• For children aged between 10 and 18 years, the rates are the same as for adults.
• Superior Room: We permit only one extra bed which can accommodate only one guest.
• Luxury Tent: We permit no more than two persons in the Luxury Tent. No extra bed is provided. Children are not permitted in the Luxury Tent.
• Pool Villa: We permit only one extra bed which can accommodate a maximum of two guests.
• Every guest at Kaav is requested to produce a valid Identity Document at the time of check in.
• The mentioned rates are inclusive of all GST and any changes in percentage of GST would be automatically applicable.
• The company reserves the Right to Admission.
