Live reviews

Slowly getting back to the studio, the English quartet Stateless activated the system and are about to hit the road again. Since the latest record, 'Matilda' that was released in 2011, the long process of writing seems to end and the time has arrived for a huge comeback after a much too long break. Stateless present a diverse being with loads of different styles that they have planted in their music. They are ninjas of the mixture of electronic and rock music combined with some trip hop and acoustic parts and this experience is not unconditionally reliveable from the albums. Imagine a concert where you can say hello to easy rock and chill-out tunes, you can really move your body or you can have romantic times with your boy-/girlfriend. Hits like "Bloodstream" or "Ariel" surely won’t stay in the music backpack and make sure you have a lighter with you for the sensitive moments when Chris James makes you emotional with his vocals. Because that has the power and not the fancy outfits or mesmerizing visuals. Why would we need these if the live music was impressive enough? And don’t mind if you somehow haven’t heard of them – be brave and explore the world of Stateless and for that night only the bad mood is going to be less.

Stateless (band)

English electronic band / from wikipedia, the free encyclopedia, dear wikiwand ai, let's keep it short by simply answering these key questions:.

Can you list the top facts and stats about Stateless (band)?

Summarize this article for a 10 year old

Stateless are an English electronic band, founded in 2002 and based in Leeds and London. The group comprises Chris James (vocals, keyboards, guitars), kidkanevil (turntables, sampling, programming), Justin Percival (bass guitar, vocals) and David Levin (drums).

Stateless earned a recording contract with Sony Music and released their first single "Down Here" in 2004. The four-track EP The Bloodstream EP was released on Regal Recordings in 2005. In 2006 Stateless changed in line-up and signed with label !K7 Records . Single "Exit" was released in 2007, followed by their self-titled debut album Stateless . There were two other singles from this album; "Prism No.   1" and "Bloodstream". They toured throughout the UK and Europe in 2007 and 2008, playing both live concerts and acoustic showcases, promoting the album and debuting new material for an upcoming second album. In 2008 the single "Window 23/The Great White Whale" in collaboration with Gavin Castleton was released on First Word Excursions. In 2010, the band signed with independent label Ninja Tune on which their eleven-track second album Matilda was released on 21 February 2011, taking on a less organic and more electronic feel and direction. The album was accompanied and preceded by single "Ariel" already released on 22 November 2010 and "Assassinations" released on 14 February 2011. Then on 19 September 2011 the I'm On Fire EP was released, with the original version feat. Shara Worden, plus remixes from Blue Daisy and Slugabed, a new song called "Blue Fire" feat. Amenta, and a string quartet version of "Bloodstream".

Their brand of electronic alternative rock is habitually compared to the sound of bands such as Radiohead , Portishead and Massive Attack. Furthermore, Stateless are influenced by many styles of music from classical music to psychedelic rock , dancehall reggae to electronic music and hip hop and artists such as DJ Shadow , Autechre and Björk . About stateless.

Led by falsetto-equipped vocalist, keyboardist, and guitarist Chris James, the Leeds, England-based Stateless -- a left-of-center, electronics-enhanced rock band that recalled Radiohead, post-Protection Massive Attack, and Coldplay -- took shape in 2003. Demos for "Exit" and "Prism #1" were picked up by BBC Radio 1 and earned the interest of Sony, where Stateless released the 2004 single "Down Here." The Sony-BMG merger brought an end to the band’s major-label contract. They briefly linked with Regal and released the four-track Bloodstream EP. James then contributed lyrics and vocals to two songs for DJ Shadow's 2006 album The Outsider. Another short-term deal for Stateless yielded a self-titled album issued on !K7 in 2007. Matilda, a second album, was released on Ninja Tune in 2011. ~ Andy Kellman

Loveless' Dylan Tirapelli-Jamail and Julian Comeau

Loveless , the alt-rock duo consisting of Julian Comeau and Dylan Tirapelli-Jamail, has quietly canceled its upcoming North American tour following recently resurfaced allegations of domestic violence against Comeau.

Related Stories

Dissatisfied with its rate of erosion, dvd biz fast-forwards 2024 decline, popular on variety.

Many attributed the tour cancellation to claims on social media that Comeau was once charged with battery in an abusive relationship. On Aug. 12, a user on X (formerly Twitter) posted a thread detailing a domestic battery abuse case in Louisiana brought against Comeau in July 2018; it was reduced to simple battery in March 2019. According to court documents reviewed by Variety , Comeau was sentenced to six months inclusive of time already served as well as a year of probation. He was issued three separate bench warrants in the year that followed for failing to appear for monitoring, which were then recalled, and the probation was completed in March 2020 not long after Loveless’ formation.

In the wake of the allegations, reps for Loveless at Cardiff Giant Management and the band’s PR firm confirmed to Variety that they’re no longer affiliated with the group. Loveless’ label Rise Records, a subsidiary of BMG, also stated that Loveless is no longer on the imprint. “Rise Records/BMG has dissolved its partnership with Loveless, and the band will no longer be part of our roster,” shared the label in a statement.

A rep at UTA, which handles the band’s touring, did not respond to a request for comment. Loveless is also no longer included on the website lineups for the upcoming Reading and Leeds festivals, which they were scheduled to play later this week.

Loveless was slated to put out its first album under Rise, “Loveless II,” on Sept. 13, though it’s unclear if it will still be released. Comeau and Tirapelli-Jamail are yet to make a statement about the tour cancellation or status of the band, but the latter removed any mention of Loveless from his social media profiles and unfollowed both Comeau and Loveless on socials, leading fans to believe that the group has disbanded. Additionally, Comeau has deactivated his X account, though his Instagram and TikTok profiles remain. Neither member responded to inquiries over social media.

The duo initially formed Loveless in 2019, releasing original music and gaining momentum through TikTok covers of Billie Eilish’s “Happier Than Ever” and Kate Bush’s “Running Up That Hill (A Deal With God).” They signed to Rise in early 2023, and dropped a handful of singles leading up to “Loveless II.”

TOUR NEWS: Lene Lovich 40th anniversary of debut ‘Stateless’ tour March 2019

March 2019 sees the Lene Lovich Band taking to the road to celebrate the 40th anniversary of Lene’s classic debut album Stateless. Containing the smash hit “Lucky Number” and other perennial Lene favourites including “Home”, “Say When”, “I Think We’re Alone Now” and the celebrated ballad “Too Tender to Touch”, Stateless was an immediate success when it was first released by cult post-punk label Stiff Records, and has held it’s place in fans’ affections for four decades. Lene Lovich’s work spent over four and a half months in the Top 40 charts after the release of her debut album in 1978 in the UK and 1979 in the US.

The tour will be fans’ only chance to catch Stateless performed in it’s entirety. The show also includes other Lene favourites, such as the Thomas Dolby-penned hit “New Toy”, as well as a handful of songs from Lene’s highly regarded second album Flex.

“It is incredibly flattering to know that people are still interested in Stateless after all these years. And it is always humbling to learn what it has meant to people on a personal level. We all have music which becomes the soundtrack to our lives, and to know that people are still listening is the highest compliment that you can ever be paid as an artist and a performer.

Far from being near nostalgia, taking the album out on the road for its anniversary year is a way of saying thank you, both to the fans who have appreciated it for so long, and also to the songs themselves, which have meant so very much to me and gave me such a wonderful start on this journey.”

The Lene Lovich Band were formed in 2012 by Lene and guitarist Jude Rawlins and have been performing across Europe to much acclaim ever since. The Stateless 40th Anniversary Tour kicks off in the UK in March of 2019 and sees the band performing across the country for the first time since appearing as special guests of the Psychedelic Furs in 2017.

A new version of Stateless is currently being recorded by the band and will be released to tie in with the tour, marking Lene’s return to the studio after a 13 year hiatus.

More on Lene Lovich:

Lene Lovich was born Lili-Marlene Premilovich in Detroit, Michigan, to an English mother and an American father of Yugoslavian descent. At age 13 her father developed health problems and so the family relocated to Hull, England. Later on she began to perform in cabaret clubs in London as a dancer, recorded screams for Hammer Film Productions to dub onto their horror-films, wrote lyrics for French disco artist Marc Cerrone (including the sci-fi dance hit “Supernature”) and worked in various theatre productions.

After finding her feet in the post-punk and new wave developing in the UK, Lovich’s musical style combined her own quirky inventions with contemporary punk rock and new wave styles.

Stateless were formed in 2003 by singer-songwriter Chris James, who enlisted band members Kidkanevil (programming, samplers, turntables), Rod Buchanan-Dunlop (keys, FX), James Sturdy (drums) and John Taylor (bass) to bring his compositions to life. In true rock-fairytale style, their first demo, 'Prism #1', was picked up and playlisted by Radio 1, leading to a record deal with Sony. When Sony merged with BMG, though, the band found themselves in limbo and chose to move to respected Berlin label !K7, who released the album internationally in July 2007. Stateless toured the album all over Europe with new band members Justin Percival (bass/vocals), and Dave Levin (drums), coming to the attention of legendary producer DJ Shadow, who enlisted Chris to sing on two songs on his album, 'The Outsider'. This was followed by a huge world tour with over 80 shows in 20 countries.

For their follow-up 'Matilda', the band, along with the help of producer Damian Taylor (Bjork, the Prodigy), decided to push their combination of classic songwriting and story-telling into deeper electronic territory. Soon after meeting Taylor backstage at a Bjork show on her Volta tour, James sent him some of the new Stateless demos, which Taylor loved, and they began working on the album. The process was complex. The band recorded their parts either at home or in a recording studio in Hackney, London, and then would send all the parts to Taylor in Vancouver, who would start applying his production techniques. “I think I got overly obsessive,” confides James. “I got really bad insomnia. I literally couldn't stop thinking about it. It wasn't a very healthy place at all, it was quite a dark time.” Towards the end of 2009 James flew out to Vancouver to record in Taylor’s studio in the forest on the Sunshine Coast, and it was here that the pair did the final production work on the album.

But it wasn’t just in terms of technology that things changed with this record. As James explains, “The production is much more electronic on this album but the songwriting is quite different from the first album, too. It's more based on surreal stories and characters, it's much more cinematic. It really blurs the lines between fantasy and reality.” It’s a record he’s rightly very proud of, both for the passion and commitment that went into making it, but also for the result. “It’s like a strange and beautiful dreamscape, “ he says. “It's dark, surreal, mysterious, full of weird and wonderful characters. It's a big piece of work. I hope that people get that, when they hear it. I think it's gonna take quite a few listens before it really sinks in. It's a proper album, it works as a whole. I want people to do the Pink Floyd thing, and listen to it from start to finish really loud on good headphones.”

They called on their fans to don’t stop believing. But it looks like the warring members of the legendary rock band Journey are having their own faith tested.

The band, famed for such hits as “Open Arms,” and “Faithfully,” as well as the iconic “Don’t Stop Believin’” reportedly pulled the plug on shows in the United Kingdom and Ireland that were part of their 50th anniversary tour, according to published reports .

The cancellations were reportedly prompted by a legal fight between keyboardist Jonathan Cain and guitarist/founder Neal Schon, according to NewsNation.

Cain sued Schon, among other things, for claims that the guitarist had maxed out the band’s American Express credit card, which has a $1 million limit, iHeart reported .

Journey is currently on tour in North America with Def Leppard . So far, none of those dates have been affected, iHeart reported.

The band’s U.K. leg of the tour was to have kicked off on Oct. 30 with a show at Utilita Arena in Carfiff, Wales.

Other shows were scheduled in Nottingham, Glasgow, Belfast, Dublin, Manchester, Leeds, Liverpool, Birmingham and Newcastle, according to the online news outlet. The U.K. tour was set to wrap with a show at the O2 in London on Nov. 17, NewsNation reported.

The band has sold more than 100 million records across their career, according to their official website .

What to know about Green Day's Milwaukee concert at American Family Field

Portrait of Piet Levy

It took 17 years for Green Day to make it back to Milwaukee. But these days, the band can't get enough of it.

Billie Joe Armstrong and company brought their Hella Mega Tour with Fall Out Boy and Weezer to the American Family Insurance Amphitheater for Summerfest in 2021. Then last year, they were the first headliner for the now two-year-old Harley-Davidson Homecoming Festival in Veterans Park.

And Saturday, they'll make their way back to Milwaukee again, for a "Saviors Tour" stop at American Family Field. But even if you caught Green Day's recent local gigs, this next show at the Milwaukee Brewers ballpark will be quite different from both of them.

Here's everything you need to know before you go.

When do the gates open for Green Day's Milwaukee concert? When does it start?

The American Family Field parking lots will open at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, three hours before the first band takes the stage. That'll give fans plenty of time to park and tailgate. And it might be a good idea to get there early. While the show being on a Saturday should be beneficial traffic-wise, the closer to showtime it is, the longer car lines likely will be. Expect lines at the five entrances into the stadium, too; with gates opening at 4 p.m., though, you'll have plenty of time to get into the stadium.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

How much is parking for the Green Day concert?

General parking is $25 in advance, $40 for preferred parking, available at brewers.com/greenday . You can wait to pay for parking onsite, but the prices will jump — $35 for general parking, $50 for preferred parking — and the Brewers can't guarantee a spot.

How to get to the concert if you don't want to drive

There are two Milwaukee County Transit System  bus routes that drop people off within walking distance of the ballpark: the CONNECT1 on Wisconsin Avenue and Route 18 on National Avenue. Go to ridemcts.com for the schedule, fare information and more.

Taxi pickup and drop-off is outside Helfaer Field, while drop-off and pick-up for Uber and Lyft is in American Family Field's Gantner parking lot — but expect huge rideshare crowds after the concert.

Some of the  bars and restaurants that send shuttles to Brewers games will be operating. See the "American Family Field" section of  brewers.com  for more details.

Are Green Day tickets still available? How much are they?

There are still plenty of firsthand tickets available through ticketmaster.com , from $34 to $949 for a pit spot that includes access to a pre-show acoustic set with opener The Smashing Pumpkins, plus an exclusive merch bag and access to a special lounge and merch area. Those tickets do not include fees. Resale tickets also are available through the concert Ticketmaster page, starting at $27, excluding fees.

I have a floor seat. How do I access the field?

Anyone with a pit ticket or seat in sections A through P will need to show their ticket barcode to get a wristband before heading to the field. Wristbands will be available on the field level concourse near sections 109 and 118, and just inside the Third Base Gate, the Left Field Gate and the Associated Bank Gate.

What's the bag policy for the Green Day concert at American Family Field?

Diaper bags and medically necessary items will be permitted, but otherwise three types of bags are permitted: single-compartment bags that are 9 x 5 x 2 inches or smaller; clear, single-compartment tote bags 12 x 12 x 6 inches or smaller; and one-gallon clear, seal-top bags. All bags are subject to inspection.

Who is opening for Green Day at American Family Field?

The Smashing Pumpkins — the Chicago alt-rock veterans last seen in Milwaukee headlining Fiserv Forum in 2022 — are the primary openers, but they're not the only ones. Preceding the Pumpkins are seminal punk band Rancid. The Linda Lindas, a band of teens that went viral thanks to clips of their feminist punk set at the Los Angeles Public Library (and who made a strong impression opening for Paramore at Fiserv Forum last year), will kick off the show at 5:30 p.m.

What's Green Day expected to play in Milwaukee?

The tour is named after Green Day's "Saviors," so expect a few songs from their newest album. But fans will be most thrilled to hear not one but two of the band's biggest albums — "Dookie" and "American Idiot" — played in their entirety, in honor of the former's 30th anniversary and the latter's 20th anniversary.

Def Leppard, Journey tour 2024: Ultimate guide to their Phoenix concert

Portrait of Ed Masley

Def Leppard and Journey are headed to Chase Field in downtown Phoenix on a co-headlining tour whose local date includes Steve Miller Band bringing the number of hits you can expect to hear to an even more staggering total.

At the tour launch in St. Louis, Def Leppard's performance went heavy on highlights of their biggest albums, "Pyromania" and "Hysteria," signing off with "Pour Some Sugar on Me."

Journey also played their biggest '80s hits and reached back to the '70s for such classics as "Lights" and "Lovin', Touchin', Squeezin.'"

This isn't the first time Def Leppard and Journey have toured. They played Phoenix together in 2019.

The Arizona Republic praised that concert , writing, "On one hand, the tour is a testament to the enduring appeal of the two bands' catalogs. On the other hand, they wouldn't still be bringing in those kind of numbers if they couldn't still be counted on to deliver the goods. And the goods were delivered in full as both bands made their way through hit-filled sets."

For more than a decade, State Champs have become a major player in the world of pop-punk, helping define the genre for a new generation of fans. Singer Derek DiScanio, guitarist Tyler Szalkowski, bassist Ryan Scott Graham, and drummer Evan Ambrosio have championed the vibrant genre since their first album, The Finer Things, in 2013. They have proven more than adept at building an authentic connection with an audience, through smart and uplifting songcraft and passionate performances.

Over the course of their career, State Champs has received accolades from the likes of Kerrang!, Upset, Alternative Press, and Rock Sound, among others. Their sophomore album, Around the World and Back, entered the Billboard Current Rock Albums chart at No. 3 and made Rock Sound’s Top 10 Albums of the Year. Living Proof followed in 2018, and that same year Billboard called them “modern-day pop-punk torchbearers.” The band has also collaborated with some of pop-punk’s heaviest hitters, co-writing songs with Alex Gaskarth of All Time Low and Mark Hoppus from Blink-182 on their latest album Kings of the New Age.

Now the band is getting back on the road to perform new music, along with some of their most beloved songs.

20 years ago 'Slow Motion' reigned as #1 song and Dave Matthews' bus rained #2 on a tour boat

Portrait of John Tufts

It was 20 years ago when a Dave Matthews Band tour bus dumped 800 pounds of human waste onto dozens of people under the Kinzie Street Bridge in Chicago while they were out sightseeing on a tour boat — giving horrible new meaning to the term "poop deck."

On Aug. 8, 2004, the band's bus driver mistakenly toggled a switch that opened the bus's septic tank, The Chicago Tribune reported, releasing the equivalent of 55 gallons of sand onto roughly 120 passengers taking a tour of the Windy City. Roughly two-thirds of the people seated on the upper deck of the vessel were soaked.

For a while, no one knew who was responsible for the dumping, according to the news outlet. The incident was later connected to the band, resulting in criminal charges, a lawsuit, apologies and what we suspect were a lot of dry cleaning bills.

Dave Matthews Band later settled with the state of Illinois , according to The Chicago Tribune, while the driver pleaded guilty to reckless conduct and pollution charges.

On Thursday's anniversary, people marked the occasion of the now infamous moment on social media. Here are some of the posts that 'crashed' into our feed.

Loveless Band Controversy Explained: Tour Drama Breakdown

Julian Comeau from Loveless Band

Opening bands are leaving the upcoming Loveless tour following some unsavory allegations against Julian Comeau.

Loveless features Comeau as a vocalist and Dylan Tirapelli-Jamail as a multi-instrumentalist. The duo, joined by drummer Stephen Haaker during tours and in music videos, signed with BMG and Rise Records in 2023.

They released their debut album, Loveless I , independently in 2021, which included 12 original songs and a cover of Taylor Swift's "Exile." Their first EP, End of an era , was released in 2022, featuring 7 original tracks and covers of "Middle of the Night" and "Running Up That Hill."

In April, Loveless announced a North American headline tour to support their upcoming album, Loveless II , set for release on September 13. A lot of excitement was building for the looming tour, but now the online controversy is giving the band poor optics.

Loveless Band Controversy Explained

Loveless band

Julia Wolf and the band Beauty School Dropout have both announced on their respective Instagrams that they will not be a part of the upcoming Loveless tour.

Initially, they were supposed to both be openers during the tour, but both cited "recent information" as the reason for their departure.

Julian Comeau was reportedly convicted of simple battery in 2018 following an initial charge of domestic battery abuse, according to posts shared by an X user named Kendall.

The posts detail how Comeau, a Louisiana state court record confirms, used force or violence against a household member in March 2018. The victim, whose identity has been kept confidential, alleged that Comeau attempted to throw her over a balcony and had previously slapped her in a bar.

Although a protection order was placed on the victim, it expired in October 2018, and she continues to block Comeau on all communication platforms.

According to Kendall, the victim, still uncomfortable with coming forward publicly, entrusted her to share her story and documents related to the case.

In addition to this past conviction, rumors are swirling online that accuse Comeau of personal messaging underage fans on Snapchat. This has led many users online to believe that Loveless may be "cancelled" heading into their tour.

Loveless is also no longer listed on the Rise Records ' official website, X user Valerie pointed out that the band was previously featured.

While the press surrounding Comeau and Loveless is trending downward, the band is still expected to release its album on time and go on tour un any further updates.

A musical tour of tim walz’s minnesota.

The state is a hotbed of corrosive underground rock, birthplace of two acclaimed icons, home to a lively hip-hop scene and a bedrock of ’80s pop and funk.

A wavy pink line.

By Lindsay Zoladz

Dear listeners,

On Tuesday, Vice President Kamala Harris announced that she had chosen a running mate: Tim Walz, governor of Minnesota. The news cast a spotlight not only on Walz, but on Minnesota’s culture — and in particular its rich, varied musical history.

Walz is an avowed music fan himself, with a special appreciation for local record stores and artists who hail from the state. My colleague Marc Tracy delves into this side of Walz in a piece published this morning , in which he suggests that the Gen X governor’s fandom of Twin Cities indie-rock legends like the Replacements and Hüsker Dü has “signaled a changing of the generational guard.” Adds Michael Azerrad, author of the ’80s rock tome “Our Band Could Be Your Life,” “It makes sense that our post-Boomer politicians would be into indie rock.”

But Minnesota, of course, is more than just a hotbed of corrosive underground rock. It’s also the birthplace of two of the greatest American musicians of the last century (Duluth’s Bob Dylan and Minneapolis’s Prince ), home to a lively hip-hop scene that produced a recent superstar (the Detroit expat Lizzo ), and the locus of the wildly influential “Minneapolis sound” (practiced by groups like the Time ) that reverberated throughout ’80s pop and funk.

Today’s playlist is a celebration of the many sounds of Minnesota, and it features all the aforementioned artists plus the heartland revivalists the Hold Steady , the grunge hell-raisers Babes in Toyland and the alt-country mainstays the Jayhawks . To quote Prince — in whose honor Walz renamed a stretch of Minnesota highway last year — “Rock ’n’ roll is alive! (And it lives in Minneapolis).”

Sure as the Land of a Thousand Lakes is sometimes made of snow,

Listen along while you read.

1. the replacements: “left of the dial (ed stasium mix)”.

We begin, naturally, with an album called “Tim.” Loyal Amplifier readers will recall that last October I put together a playlist in honor of a radically remixed reissue of the Minnesota rockers the Replacements’ infamously muffled 1985 album, and it seems that I was not the only one excited about that release. For his story, Marc spoke with the former congressman Beto O’Rourke, who said he bonded with Walz over music when they were both serving on the House Committee on Veterans’ Affairs. When the long-awaited “Let It Bleed Edition” of “Tim” came out last year, O’Rourke sent his friend Walz a copy of the vinyl boxed set. I can’t believe I’m typing this, but I am dying to know the vice-presidential candidate’s thoughts on the Ed Stasium mix. ▶ Listen on Spotify , Apple Music or YouTube

2. Bob Dylan: “Highway 61 Revisited”

Born in Duluth and later a resident of Hibbing, Dylan has scattered references to his home state throughout his vast discography. (See, for one famous example: “Girl From the North Country.” ) Fittingly, the 1,400-mile route after which he named one of his greatest albums begins in Minnesota and stretches all the way down to Louisiana.

▶ Listen on Spotify , Apple Music or YouTube

3. Lizzo: “Truth Hurts”

First released in 2017, Lizzo’s breakout hit includes a sassy reference to her adopted home state: “New man on the Minnesota Vikings.” (Or, as she once put it while sitting courtside at the Target Center in Minneapolis, “New man on the Minnesota Timberwolves .” She’s leaving her options open.)

4. Prince: “Rock ’N’ Roll Is Alive! (And It Lives in Minneapolis)”

The Purple One represents his city on this funky, upbeat 1995 B-side: “Even the president flies in to watch the thing called fame,” he sings. “Red, white and blue boy girls, tonight everyone’s the same.”

▶ Listen on Spotify , Apple Musi c or YouTube

5. Janet Jackson: “Escapade”

One of my favorite moments on the great, sprawling “Rhythm Nation 1814” — recorded entirely at Flyte Tyme Studios in Minnesota — comes on the bridge of this 1990 hit, when an exuberant Janet Jackson calls out of nowhere, “Minneapolis!” It might sound like a non sequitur to the uninitiated, but real ones know that she was shouting out her producers, Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis , both important architects of the Minneapolis sound.

6. The Time: “Jungle Love”

Jam and Lewis both got their start in the Minneapolis funk group the Time, led by the charismatic Morris Day. Friendly rivals of Prince’s backing band the Revolution, the Time has two scene-stealing performances in the 1984 film “Purple Rain,” including its rendition of this lively classic.

7. The Hold Steady: “Stuck Between Stations”

Though the anthemic indie-rock band the Hold Steady formed in Brooklyn, its frontman and principal songwriter, Craig Finn, proudly hails from Minneapolis and often nods to his home state in his highly referential lyrics. “These Twin City kisses, they sound like clicks and hisses,” he sings on this standout from the 2006 album “Boys and Girls in America.”

8. The Jayhawks: “Blue”

Formed in Minneapolis in 1984 and still going strong, the long-running alt-country group the Jayhawks is one of the state’s unsung, if-you-know-you-know local heroes. This cracked, twangy tune comes from the band’s 1995 album “Tomorrow the Green Grass.”

9. Babes in Toyland: “Sweet ’69”

A rare all-female grunge group, Minneapolis’s Babes in Toyland brought a dash of riot grrrl attitude to its muscular, hard-rocking sound. The cowbell-heavy “Sweet ’69” is a snapshot of the band at its commercial peak, a minor 1995 alt-rock hit from the final Babes album “Nemesisters.”

10. Hüsker Dü: “New Day Rising”

Just as Minnesota has its twin cities, in the mid-80s it also had a pair of dueling underground rock groups: the shambolic Replacements and the heavier, more pummeling Hüsker Dü. Ever the politician, Walz does not seem to have taken a side in this rivalry, but his ticket seems to have earned that critical Bob Mould endorsement .

Bonus Tracks

Thanks for all the feedback on Tuesday’s newsletter about great guitar cues . A few additional tracks suggested by readers: the Doors ’ “Roadhouse Blues” (“Do it, Robby, do it!”), Janelle Monáe ’s “Cold War” (“Kellindoooooo!”) and Captain Beefheart ’s “Big Eyed Beans From Venus” (“Mr. Zoot Horn Rollo, hit that long, lunar note and let it float”). Today’s Minnesota playlist even has a great cue: Morris Day, in the Time ’s “Jungle Love,” commanding the guitarist Jesse Johnson, “Jesse, gimme one of them sexy solos right here. Break it down!”

Popular rock band postpones tour after frontman’s health scare

  • Published: Aug. 17, 2024, 5:05 a.m.

Coal Chamber

Coal Chamber has postponed its tour until 2025.

Popular and trailblazing band Coal Chamber has postponed the remainder of its tour dates for the year after a scary medical issue involving vocalist Dez Fafara.

Fafara detailed his situation in a post on the band’s Instagram page on Friday.

“With a heavy heart, let me tell you a story about life taking a turn,” Fafara wrote. “I’m writing to you from my bed. I’ve been running 6 miles daily. I’ve been rehearsing two hours daily in my home studio and excited to hit the road. I’m excited to get on a bus with my brothers and sister and my crew. I’d never felt better as you all know. I fought back hard after long haul COVID tried to kill me.

“Saturday morning I woke up and I was coming up my stairs,” he continued. “I saw stars in my eyes. I passed out and my wife revived me. My vitals were through the roof, and I was sheet white and vomiting, and the whole world was spinning.”

Fafara said they called 9-1-1, and that he was taken via ambulance to a hospital where he did nine hours of testing, including X-rays of his heart and lungs.

“My doctor has advised me to get a cat scan, and until further testing, I am on bedrest and must postpone the Tour,” he wrote.

He said the tour has already been booked to begin in March of 2025, and that includes a March 29 appearance at HMAC in Harrisburg.

“We will see you in March 2025 on the Fiend For The Fans Tour,” he wrote. “This tour postponement is surreal. I was looking forward to playing with my band and connecting with fans, friends and family on the road.”

Fafara thanked everyone for their “outpouring of love and outpouring of calls and texts checking on me.”

“It seems like the word spread and the whole industry has been ringing my phone since Sunday: musicians, agents and managers and I really really appreciate it.”

He credited his band, too, with being “amazing understanding.”
