Visit Indiana University

Visiting campus, indiana, we're all for you..

Whether you're an alumnus who calls Bloomington your second home or a proud parent of an incoming student, there's always something new to experience (or a beloved tradition to partake in once more) when visiting Indiana University.

Consistently ranked as one of the most beautiful college campuses and best college towns in the country, Indiana University and Bloomington offer that quintessential college experience to students, families, and fans. If you're planning a visit to the Hoosier campus soon, you may find these tips and resources helpful.

Plan Your Trip to IU

Crowds of people on the IU Tailgating Fields

Indiana University has a large campus with lots of amazing things to see, so be sure to allow plenty of time to explore — don't forget to wear comfortable shoes.

Get a map of campus at our visitors center or the  IU Visitors Center  to help you navigate through the winding trails and massive buildings.

Check our  events calendar  to see what's happening in the area during your trip. If you're coming for a major event, plan in advance.  Hotels sell out quickly for big events like football games , graduation , and the  Little 500 . Our Visitors Center keeps track of hotel availability, so give us a call if you need help with booking.

Parking & Transportation

iu

Finding parking on campus can be difficult and confusing, but with these tips , you'll have an easier time finding a space. Your best bet is to find a spot and stick with it all day — you'll enjoy more of the campus on foot than by car, anyway.

If you don't have a car but still want to explore Bloomington, there are several alternative transportation options. You can take the campus and city buses, get a ride via Uber or Lyft, or rent a bicycle or e-scooter.

Things to Do

Hammock Campus Full

There's plenty to do on campus , but some of the local establishments are also part of the IU experience. Be sure to check out the  restaurants ,  attractions , and  shops  that have been Hoosier favorites for decades.

Above all else, have fun and enjoy the Cream & Crimson energy that flows through campus! If you have additional questions, please reach out to us at 800-800-0037, or email our information specialists.

Indiana University Bloomington

Explore art, architecture, and nature.

Nestled in the rolling hills of southern Indiana, IU Bloomington showcases the kind of landscape you’d expect from the quintessential college campus. You’ll travel through time as you walk the grounds, with the Victorian-era buildings of the Old Crescent giving way to Romanesque, Gothic, Collegiate Gothic, Art Deco, Modern, and postmodern architectural styles of the last 200 years. From its original 10 acres south of downtown, IU Bloomington has grown to nearly 2,000 acres in the northeast quadrant of the city.

Stroll through such memorable landmarks as Dunn’s Woods and the Fine Arts Plaza. Enjoy a picnic on the bank of the Campus River. Experience a moment of Zen in the Commemorative Garden at the Indiana Memorial Union. Whatever you seek, find it at IU Bloomington.

Families are invited to attend the ceremony as their Hoosier is inducted into the IU academic community. The event will also be livestreamed for family members unable to be on campus. The ceremony includes an introduction of the entering class, their commitment to The Indiana Promise, and the presentation of the IU alma mater, “Hail to Old IU”.

What did Notre Dame men's basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry crave most in Spain?

Portrait of Tom Noie

SOUTH BEND − When it comes to a tasty beverage of choice, Notre Dame men’s basketball coach Micah Shrewsberry makes it no secret – and makes no apologies – for his go-to.

He’s a Pepper.

Noie: What did Micah Shrewsberry learn from Notre Dame men's basketball tour of Spain?

As in Dr Pepper. As in, a fountain drink, usually ordered in a 32-ounce cup from the drive-thru at the McDonald’s on Ironwood just south of 23 near campus. It’s often the way Shrewsberry starts – and sometimes even ends – his basketball day.

That caused a dilemma during Notre Dame’s 10-day foreign tour of Spain earlier this month. Would Shrewsberry even find Dr Pepper? Could he get it in a fountain cup or settle for it in a plastic bottle or, going old school, out of an aluminum can?

Noie: What was different this summer about the Notre Dame men's basketball team? It was obvious

Dr Pepper to Shrewsberry is what coffee or tea or Monster or just plain milk or water is to you in the morning. What sweet tea was to the previous Irish men’s basketball coach. It’s a lifeline.

Having his players build bonds beyond basketball and playing well in the three exhibition games against foreign teams of pros were paramount for the trip, but the head coach getting his daily Dr Pepper fix wasn’t far behind.

Shrewsberry improvised at Notre Dame’s first two stops – Madrid and Valencia – where there was not a Doctor in the house.

“They had Coke,” Shrewsberry said with a sigh. “I drank a lot of Coke on the trip.”

When the trip took Notre Dame to Barcelona, assistant coach Mike Farrelly made a promising discovery. The grocery store across from the team hotel, Farrelly noticed, carried Dr Pepper. In cans. One day after a walking sightseeing tour of the city with one of his daughters, Grace, Shrewsberry ducked into the store and bought some Dr Pepper.

He returned to his hotel room and couldn’t wait to get his DP fix. Finally.

“I was like, ‘Man, this is going to be great,’” he said.

“It was trash,” he said. “God, it was so bad. It wasn’t the same taste. That hurt my heart right there. Every bit of it just crushed my whole soul.”

Shrewsberry would have to wait until the team returned to America to get Dr Pepper. Notre Dame flew back through O’Hare International Airport on the way home, which was fine. Having traveled plenty through that airport, Shrewsberry knew exactly where to find the two McDonald’s restaurants in the B concourse.

Notre Dame’s traveling party landed in the international terminal, then took a round-about way to its connecting gate for the flight to South Bend, so Shrewsberry never made it to Concourse B or McDonald’s. He had to wait until he was back home again in Indiana. Once he hit the drive-thru at the McDonald’s on Ironwood, he knew he’d get his Dr Pepper fountain drink fix. Finally.

It was almost as if they were waiting for his return.

“They’ve gotta know my voice,” he said. “Hey, Coach is here. Where’s his Dr Pepper at?”

With that, Shrewsberry wrapped his late-August press conference and stepped from the raised dais of the Hammes Basketball Auditorium. Before he did, he reached for something.

He reached for his 32-ounce Dr Pepper fountain drink. He rarely goes anywhere without one. Except to Spain.
