Papa Emeritus IV is coming to an amphitheater near you. Ghost , the Swedish hard-rock band led by the man of a thousand faces, Tobias Forge, has announced a U.S. summer tour .
Titled the Re-Imperatour U.S.A. 2023, the trek begins August 2nd in Concord, California, and plays 27 dates, wrapping up September 11th in Los Angeles. Along the way, the tour hits cities like Chicago, Milwaukee, Tampa, Austin, and Phoenix. Fellow Swedish metalheads Amon Amarth open all dates except the L.A. closer.
Ghost released their latest album, Impera , last year, a record that rails against bloated nations, empty leaders, and the glorification of stupidity. “We now have mechanisms within our own Western empire who are actively trying to, and to some degree have, created this time machine where we’re regressing,” Forge told Rolling Stone . “We’re flattening the earth. We’re submitting to stupidity, which is fucking unbelievable.”

Earlier this month, Ghost staged a pop-up exhibit at the Whisky a Go Go on the Sunset Strip in L.A. that featured memorabilia, from stage costumes to a “corpse,” from their supposed Sixties incarnation. They also released a new version of the Impera track “Spillways” featuring Def Leppard’s Joe Elliott.

CONCERT REVIEW: GHOST, MASTODON and SPIRITBOX Bring Intense, Technical, Theatrical and Eye-Opening Musical Fest to Tampa (September 6th, 2022)
While rock music is alive and well, witness the countless mid-capacity theaters with sold out shows and festivals that are drawing forty thousand plus people. But it seems as though the art of the arena show has gone by the wayside. If there is one larger than life band that was seemingly built for the grand stage, it’s Ghost . With five full length albums including their latest effort “Impera” out it is now the perfect time for Ghost to bring their larger than life presence out on the road and to your local arena. Along for the ride is Spiritbox , a rising powerhouse band out of Canada. If that wasn’t enough, In what has to be a bold move by Ghost, they decided to invite a fearsome band that could headline this tour. Yes, Grammy award winning band Mastodon would be filling out the bill.
Starting off the nights festivities was Spiritbox . With the release of “Eternal Blue,” the band’s first full length album, the buzz about them has been high. So it was no surprise that the Yuengling Center was filling up early. From the moment they opened up with the hit single “Circle With Me” , lead singer Courtney LaPlante ’s tremendous vocal prowess was on display. Her unique ability to go from a guttural growl to an ethereal note with a flip of a switch left everyone in awe. With a criminally short amount of time afforded to them, they breathlessly ripped through their set that featured hit singles “Hurt You” and “Holy Roller” as well as two new songs “Rotoscope” and “Hysteria.”

While many in the audience were drawn to the show due to the headline act, for those this would be a marvelous introduction to the world of Mastodon . With a twenty year career under their collective belt there would be no shortage of material for the band to choose from, including their most recent release 2021’s “Hushed And Grim”. When the stage lights came up it revealed a stage with two levels with drummer Brann Dailor and keyboardist Joao Nogueira on the upper level and bassist Troy Sanders flanked by guitarists Bill Kelliher and Brent Hinds on the lower level.
Dailor kicked things off with a flurry of intense drum work as the band leapt into “Pain With An Anchor” and he continued on taking over the singing duties while he played. The bands prog-rock roots were on full display replete with time signature changes and complex guitar interplay. As it sets the tone for “Hushed And Grim”, it also set the tone for the night’s performance. Bassist Troy Sanders took over on vocals for “Crystal Skull” while Kelliher and Hinds powerful guitar work filled the arena with a dense wall of sound. While Mastodon pounded out song after song brilliantly, they had video screens behind them playing psychedelic images as well as lasers that added to the musical journey the band was taking everyone on.
As “Hushed and Grim” is the bands newest release, nearly half of the eleven song set came from this release. “Tear Drinker” and “More Than I Can Chew” were definite highlights from the album as they truly highlighted the bands unique mix of progressive/stoner/sludge style of music. For all the fans of Mastodon they also dug deep into their catalog and treated everyone to a couple of their classic hits “Megalodon” and “Mother Puncher” . For close to an hour and a half the band put on an amazing performance that was crisp and tight without loosing an ounce of the power that their music has. For their fan base this was a show to remember and for those being introduced to them it was a performance that would be indelibly etched into their brains.

With just enough time for the crowd to catch their collective breath, it was finally time for the satanically flavored Swedish import Ghost to close out the night. As the house lights dimmed “Miserere Mei, Deus” was pumped through the house PA giving the feeling that everyone was being sent on a trip back in time to the Spanish inquisition. As the song wound down, the curtain covering the screen dropped and a massive bang was let loose. With the stage lights coming up three of the nameless ghouls made their way to the front of the stage playing the intro to “Kaisarion” . Finally Tobias Forge made his way on stage dressed as his alter ego Papa Emeritus to the cheers of all of his disciples. Forge/Emeritus and his stage full of ghouls breathlessly played the eminently catchy song “Rats” as the arena full of fans sang along word for word.
While Ghost is Forge ’s baby, and all his ghouls are hired guns hence the steampunk meets gas mask costumes that they wear. But that doesn’t mean they are merely there to back him up. He allows them to strut their stuff and during the concert they even had an incredible guitar duel. Not only did this showcase their incredible talent, but they were also able to infuse their individual personalities into the performance as well. As the ghouls wound down their solo’s, one of the ghouls started on the intro to the hit single “Cirice” and they followed it up with “Hunters Moon” which both were wildly received by everyone there.
While everyone was enjoying the music that Ghost was performing exquisitely, they also wowed everyone with an arena level performance. With a drum kit that was at the top of a multi-tier riser, elevated side stage platforms for all the band members to go on to play to the crowd on the sides, and of course a backdrop that gave the stage a cathedral like look, the setup was indeed impressive and very much worthy of an arena. While all the ghouls had their own costumes. Forge also had his. For the first part of the show he was in his latest incarnation of Papa Emeritus. But during the later parts of the concert he also surprised everyone by changing into his previous incarnations of Papa Emeritus replete with pope like hat and robes. They saved their two most popular songs for the end of the show “Dance Macabre” and “Square Hammer” and during both of them they filled the arena with Confetti.
For several hours this evening all three bands showed that rock music is very much as strong as ever and on its way back to being an arena staple with great music and over the top theatrical production of all the bands. From the youthful energy and promise of newcomers Spiritbox to the intense powerful performance of Mastodon these two bands opened plenty of eyes and garnered new fans. With tonight’s performance, Ghost has shown everyone that they have deservedly taken the giant step up to an arena level act.

Ghost Announce 2023 ‘Re-Imperatour’ U.S. Tour Dates With Amon Amarth
Ghost have announced their first set of U.S. tour dates for 2023. Dubbed the Re-Imperatour, the 27-date tour will feature Amon Amarth as the opener.
The run will kick off Aug. 2 in Concord, Calif. and wrap up Sept. 11 in Los Angeles at the renowned Kia Forum. Amon Amarth will join Ghost throughout the entirety of the tour, except for the Los Angeles show. Tickets go on sale this Friday, Feb. 17 at 10AM local time.
Earlier this year, Ghost leader Tobias Forge teased that "good change" would be coming to the band prior to embarking on any of their 2023 tours.
“We’re going to come out with a little bit of change before that – good change," the vocalist told Metal Hammer . "We’re not going to go silent. Some things are public, other things not in public view, but there are a lot of things brewing.”
While it's unclear what Forge was alluding to, Ghost have undergone quite a bit of change as it is over the last several months, especially when their 2019 song "Mary on a Cross" went viral on TikTok , which exposed the band to a whole new fanbase.
As per Setlist.fm , Ghost's most recent concert took place in September. They have a European tour scheduled throughout May and June before returning to the U.S. in August. Check out tickets for the European shows here .

Support on all dates will come from GRAMMY Award-winning band Mastodon, who have quietly evolved into one of the most influential, inimitable, and iconic rock bands of the modern era. Mastadon will not appear in Green Bay or at the Blue Ridge Rock Fest.

The newly announced dates will comprise Ghost’s first North American run since the March 11th release of its fifth album Impera via Loma Vista Recordings. The album debuted at No. 1 in a sweep of the US album charts, entering the Billboard 200 at No. 2 with first week sales of nearly 70,000. Internationally, Impera bowed at No. 1 in the band’s native Sweden as well as Germany and Finland, while cracking the top 5 in the UK, Netherlands, Belgium, Canada, Australia, France, Ireland, and more.
The tour announcement also coincides with this week’s ascension of “Call Me Little Sunshine” to the top of the rock radio chart and the unveiling of “Chapter 11: Family Dinner,” the newest installment of Ghost’s long-running narrative series of webisodes . In this next chapter, we find Papa Emeritus IV, having returned to the Ministry, joining Sister Imperator, Mr. Saltarian, and the spirit of Papa Nihil for a meal of Chinese takeout.

Ghost has revealed details of its upcoming RE-IMPERATOUR U.S.A. 2023 summer tour with special guest Amon Amarth. Produced by Live Nation and FPC Live, the 27-date tour kicks off on Wednesday, August 2nd in Concord, CA at Concord Pavilion, with stops in Milwaukee on August 12 at the American Family Insurance Amphitheater, Salt Lake City, Chicago, Cincinnati, Austin and more before wrapping up with the band's Monday, September 11th return to the Kia Forum in Los Angeles.
Ghost continues to elevate and reaffirm its status as one of the world's most esteemed and celebrated creative forces. Accumulating well over a billion streams, the GRAMMY-winning Swedish theatrical rock band continues to bring the “euphoric spectacle” (ROLLING STONE) of its live shows to ever-growing and increasingly impassioned crowds, headlining arena tours including sold out shows from The Forum in Los Angeles and Barclays Center in New York to London’s O2 Arena and Stockholm’s Avicii Arena. In March 2022, THE LOS ANGELES TIMES reported in a Calendar cover story that Ghost had "conquered metal and the charts” when its fifth album IMPERA debuted at #1 in a sweep of the U.S. album charts, entering the BILLBOARD 200 at #2 and bowing at #1 in the band's native Sweden as well as Germany and Finland, while cracking the top 5 in the UK (#2), Netherlands (#2), Belgium (#2), Canada (#3), Australia (#3), France (#5), Ireland (#5), and more. Produced by Klas Åhlund and mixed by Andy Wallace — and featuring “Spillways”—hailed as a “sweetly constructed rock tune” by THE NEW YORK TIMES, the GRAMMY-nominated “Call Me Little Sunshine,” and Active Rock #1 radio single “Hunter’s Moon” — IMPERA finds Ghost transported centuries forward from the Black Plague era of its previous album, 2018 Best Rock Album GRAMMY nominee Prequelle —or as ROLLING STONE put it, “Ghost predicted the pandemic, Now the metal band is foretelling the fall of empires." The result is the most ambitious and lyrically incisive entry in the Ghost canon: Over the course of IMPERA’ s 12-song cycle, empires rise and fall, would-be messiahs ply their hype (financial and spiritual alike), prophecies are foretold as the skies fill with celestial bodies divine and man-made… All in all, the most current and topical Ghost subject matter to date is set against a hypnotic and darkly colorful melodic backdrop making IMPERA a listen like no other — yet unmistakably, quintessentially Ghost.

Tampa Terrors
US Ghost Adventures is the leading provider of haunted house and ghost tours in America — we even own some of the most haunted properties in America, like the Lizzie Borden House!
Every tour is hosted by an experienced, knowledgeable local guide. You’ll hear firsthand accounts from people who have witnessed the unexplained — sometimes even a guest’s eerie encounter or the guide’s own!
US Ghost Adventures offers an authentic experience that strives to make sense of the unexplainable. The Tampa ghost tour is based on real-world portrayals of hauntings and well-documented history.
Whether you’re just visiting Florida or looking to learn more about your hometown’s haunted past, US Ghost Adventures offers a ghostly experience that you won’t forget.
Tampa’s Haunted History
Don’t let the palm trees and whimsical theme parks distract you; Tampa has a haunted history buried beneath the bikini-strewn beaches. Is the blinding Florida sun playing tricks on your vision, or did you just see something lurking in the shadows?
The Spanish explorer, Ponce De Leon, stumbled upon these sandy shores in 1513. Since then, the region has been home to an array of horrors. From mass atrocities during the Civil War to the conflicted embarkation of soldiers to Cuba during the Spanish-American war, Tampa has a dark history dripping with blood.
The city’s most beloved neighborhood, Ybor City, sprang up around a cigar factory in 1886. It has played host to a naughty lineup of criminals, villains, conspirators, and gangsters ever since.
As the bright sun sets over the coast, you can hear the restless souls of unfinished pasts begin to stir.

Our Top 3 Haunted Locations in Tampa
Old tampa theatre.
In 1926, the fabulously gaudy Tampa Theatre opened its shiny doors, and locals stepped inside for a night of escapist fantasy for only 25 cents per head. It is a space artfully designed for delightful frights, with plush blood-red seats, carved busts whose eyes seem to follow you as you walk, and gargoyles perched in corners.
But be careful where you wander: A chain-smoking poltergeist named Foster “Fink” Finley died in the lighting booth years ago and is said to have never left.
Floridian Palace
Built in 1926, The Floridian Place Hotel is one of the only hotels in Tampa to make the Historical National Registry.
Once the peak of luxury for lavish tourists to gather over cocktails, the hotel’s business took a sharp decline in the 1980s, and the clientele shifted to migrant workers and forlorn travelers. Today, the horrors of this conflicting past haunt its halls.
Old Federal Courthouse (Le Meridien Hotel)
Le Meridien Hotel tries its best to cover up its dark past, yet ghosts still haunt its halls. Only in recent years was the old federal courthouse renovated into a luxury hotel, but its history wrought with false accusations, gangers on trial, and suspicious murders lives on.
Locals say that the ghost of Charlie Wall, a gangster brutally murdered after revealing too much on trial, haunts the steps of Le Meridien still.

Live reviews
Ghost are, regardless of whether you're particularly into corpse painted, Satanic-inspired heavy metal, one band that you should not miss live. Their concerts are not simply events to watch but experiential, jaw-dropping journeys to embark upon, and here's why: The Swedish sextet, clad in black hooded gowns and pointed beard-masks (yes, this is a thing) are led by their singer, known as Papa Emeritus, who dons full skull make-up and the robes and hat of a Roman Catholic pope (aside from the upside-down crosses adorning them). As well as their appearances, the band add to the intoxicating atmosphere of their shows with a backdrop of faux stained glass windows, and burn incense to give the audience the impression of being in a church, about to undergo something more than simply watching a group of men play musical instruments on a stage. They achieve this by including the audience in their twisted act, for example during the song Body and Blood, scantily-clad women appeared at the front of the stage offering the 'Eucharist' of a goblet of blood (aka wine) to the lucky fans in the front row.
I saw Ghost at the Fillmore Silver Spring, shorty after the release of their highly anticipated second album, Infestissumam, and was, frankly, blown away by the quality of their live show. Their appearances and Satan-worshipping act are contrasted by the liveliness of their music, which while categorized as heavy or black metal, is definitely more riff and vocal-driven than most metal, with songs such as the single Monstrance Clock and even an amped-up cover of the Beatles' Here Comes The Sun as part of their catchy, dancable set.
Even if you are the biggest metal-phobe around, you should go see Ghost. If heavy metal is your jam, but you're really not into the whole make-up/ crazy outfit thing, you should go see Ghost. If you're a fan or the music but are undecided on paying for a ticket, you should most definitely go see Ghost. The entire experience is something intoxicatingly unforgettable, and you will not regret it!

The wife and I got into the game a bit late but Ghost is as much a part of our yearly plans as is eating, sleeping, and hydrating. We were fortunate to have caught their last two rituals in Sweden last year and were able to capture video of Papa III being pulled off stage during Monstrance Clock. We were so happy that we made the trip from the states because seeing the end of Papa III in videos is nothing compared to the excitement of seeing it in person, from the barrier, and right up front. This band is very exciting to watch and being able to share the experience with my wife has made our evenings with Ghost that much better. My wife met Papa III last year and we've had the opportunity to meet Cardinal Copia 3 times this year during the meet and greets in New York and Pittsburgh. We're looking forward to meeting him again 4 more times out of the 6 rituals we'll be attending in December. We also already have our tickets and vacation planned for the 2 upcoming rituals taking place in Sweden in February 2019. When they make their way back to the states in 2019, we will begin planning our schedules around their tour dates. Here's a short back story as to why they are so important to me. My wife and I were just a couple of months away from signing the official court documents stating we were divorced. While trying to keep things amicable we would meet to discuss things and we'd often listen to Ghost. By the time they would be coming Philadelphia that year, we would have been attending as two single individuals and no longer married. We'd have fun listening to them and as that common ground grew stronger, so did we and slowly began reconciling. By the time they did come to Philadelphia that year, we attended as a happily married couple and continue to do so today. Getting my wife back, I can honestly say, is all thanks to Ghost and I couldn't be more grateful to them or happier sharing the experience with anyone else except for Kelly.
The concert at Liseberg amusement Park was amazing. They opened doors at 11:00 am and there was already like 30 people waiting for the concert impatiently. Security guards and workers of the Amusement Park were very nice and help people when there was an incident outside the park.
The concert started at 8:00 pm without any problem, the crowd went crazy when they went on stage. The setlist was the following:
- Square Hammer
- From the Pinnacle to the Pit
- Elizabeth
- Con clavi con Dio
- Per aspera ad Inferi
- Body and Blood
- Devil Church
- Year Zero
- Spokosonat
- Absolution
- Deus in Absentia
- Monstrance Clock.
At the end of the last show was when 2 bodyguards came on stage and dragged Papa Emeritus III from stage and Papa Emeritus Zero came in, anouncing that the party was over and a new era was about to start.
I only got into Ghost recently and caught their show last night in Toronto.
I decided to get some cheap tickets because I liked the music and thought they'd be fun to see live.
They by far exceeded anything I was expecting. The creepy church vibe, use of incense(which I have never encountered before, very nice touch!), Papa engaging the audience at every opportunity and even took a few minutes just to chit chat and kept us roaring and laughing for more. The use of costumes and masks was amazing.
Being an introvert I don't really go out much, and when I do I just kind of sit there and enjoy the music and the show. This is the first band that's made me get up from my chair and actually get into the show. Next time they come to the area, I'm definitely saving up and treating myself to WAY better seating!
Oh my Ghost, this is the live ritual gig experience your soul is crying out for. Full disclaimer: I love Ghost to bits and have been preaching my dark passion for years. Seeing them live again - this time in a bigger arena off the back of a couple more hit albums - reaffirms the faith.
Go and see Ghost and you will get a diverse setlist drawn from the band's spectacular back catalogue. You will get theatrics and pyrotechnics. You will get both humour and deep emotion, dark anthems and sublime instrumentals and an uplifting sense that you a witnessing something novel and special.
Ghost are - musically, aesthetically, spiritually - something to cherish and the live experience is one that is fun, compelling, cathartic and oh-so-damn-rock-n-roll. Go worship and have the time of your (after)life.
I can see Ghost every night and never get bored. It's not just the band and music, Tobias has created characters, including his own, for this band that are incredibly humble and patient with their fans. While the material can be considered risque, you will see children younger than 10 years old attending that are not only having the time of their lives, but participating in the meet and greets with their parents. Everything about these shows from the music, to the costumes, the characters, and the theatrics is so very much entertaining. We know as fans that there is so much more to look forward to with the future of Ghost and we'll have the opportunity to enjoy them for many more years. It is very exciting when tomorrow becomes today and you're standing in front eagerly awaiting Ashes to start.
If you have Ghost, you have everything.
Theatre; spectacle; a sense of cult worship; dark humour; thick fugs of incense; electric, otherwordly energy; lighting and atmospherics; collective frenzy; and most of all, the sweet music of the night.
Ghost are beautiful for so many reasons. Beneath their sublime subversive style - iconoclastic and gleefully irreverent - is a musical powerhouse making the most compelling and catchy rock in this epoch. The craftsmanship is incredible. The mystique is immense. It's a joy to behold in the flesh (and blood) and if you have the opportunity to absorb the spirit of Ghost in person, surrender to it.
Honestly, Ghost was one of the greatest entertainment experiences I've had. Join them in their ritual and hail your Master...
This was the best show I have ever been to (I have seen a lot too). Ghost put on an electric performance with great theatrics as well as fun conversational bits while the musicians took a couple minutes to get water, wipe the sweat off from under those masks, etc. We were also delighted by the pyrotechnics, fog machines, and surprise mummy dust confetti! Well executed and the band sounded amazing live. I wish I had gotten tickets for the following night too! I will definitely be seeing them when they come back into town. Ghost really knows how to stimulate all their fans' senses. Many thanks to the band for their commitment to their fans and the melodic tunes they share with us. Keep them coming please!!!
The Ghost show was truly amazing. For me, this was mainly due to two things:
1. Each and every member of this band knows his instrument very well, and they play their songs flawlessly and with ease. Leaving them energy to interact with the crowd while still not missing a note/beat.
2. Their concept is so well thought through. From the incense and small unveiling ritual before their set starts to the sisters of sin and perfected visual in set, movements and costumes, everything works brilliantly. And with Papa giving some background info to songs and rituals, you really get the feeling you are part of a well-oiled ritual.
I am very glad I've been to the show, and can't wait to see this band again :)
Awesome band! I had a older friend come with last night to the Stockholm show and even thou she said "It's not exactly my favourite but it was a terrific show, tunes to sing along to and this isn't the last time we do this!" with a huge smile on her face. This was my second Ritual, i love the costume changes, you really feel like your seeing a theatrical show instead of a regular concert, I'm use to sitting up front but this time sat in the balcony to see a spectacular light show and pyrotechnics, we sat in the upper balcony and could feel the heat from the pyro effects.I only wish i could have been yp front closer to Cardinal Copia,to get his blessings. Will not be the last time i go to see Ghost!
