The Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) scheme allows travellers from specific countries to enjoy eased travel guidelines upon entry in Singapore . The VTL scheme has been expanded to include more cities in Malaysia, Indonesia and India. The VTL for India will be extended beyond Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai. Starting 16th March all flights from India to Singapore will be included.

The Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) has also said that new VTLs will be launched for Greece and Vietnam.

Here’s what you need to know

  • All fully vaccinated travellers can now enter Singapore from most cities in Malaysia , Indonesia and India without quarantine.
  • All passengers must possess a negative RT-PCR test administered no more than 72hours prior to their travel to Singapore.
  • All passengers travelling from VTL cities/countries need not do an RTPCR on arrival, but can do an unsupervised Antigen Rapid test within 24 hours of landing in Singapore.

Flights to Singapore

Flights to Singapore are available from most major airports in India, including Mumbai, Delhi and Chennai. Airlines including Air India, Singapore Airlines, IndiGo, Vistara are now operational.

You could very well spend almost one day each at its many amusement and theme parks. Singapore is well connected to India by various airlines. Singapore holiday packages from India lets you explore all the sightseeing options of the country. Along with being visually appealing, our Singapore holiday packages are affordably priced. Your choice stands as our priority, may it be for adventure or for leisure, for one country special or two or even multi country, for some special reason like honeymoon or just a short escape travel, for a desire to travel alone or with family, all of it is made possible with Veena World!

Singapore, one of the only three surviving city-states in the world besides Monaco & Vatican City, is the one that has embraced tourism at its core. This land is very welcoming, even for its small size and visiting it once seems never enough. Singapore has a cheesy tendency to keep calling you back. The Geography and Seasons

The island city-state, Singapore is a Southeast Asian land on the Indian Ocean. Located at the end of the Malayan Peninsula between Malaysia and Indonesia this land is known for being a futuristic city. The pure clean air and the green balance of the Lion City is remarkable. When you book a Singapore travel package from India you inevitably realise this difference. The humid climate of this region is heart-warming and makes a special mark on every Singapore honeymoon package. The city’s geographical and climatic features make a perfect ambience for a memorable trip. Experience this warming and welcoming atmosphere with our every Singapore travel package.

The Culture

The land is known for being a perfect harmonious homogenous cultural melting pot. It has a mixture of different cultures and influences of the planet’s most prominent traditions. Traveling with a Singapore travel package lets you experience the land’s true cultural significance. Sang Nila Utama, a prince from Palembang, saw a creature he thought was a lion and named the island “Singapura” which means “Lion City” in Sanskrit from which ‘Merlion’ was inspired. But interestingly enough, Singapore had no Lions! The people of this country are so disciplined and organised that they strongly reflect the same values in their lifestyle. Experience the culture of this unique land with Singapore tour package available online on our website.

The Experience

This city is one among the few which takes Green Revolution extremely seriously. It’s reflected in every corner of this land. Although, a ‘Garden City’, it does not lack modernity. Traveling to this unique land with our Singapore travel package, transports you straight to the future. The feel of this city is completely surreal. Veena World’s Singapore honeymoon package is priced to make travel affordable and a one-of-a-kind experience along with your life partner. The experience of Little India is an eye opening one. Witnessing it with any Singapore tour package available online, awakens a realisation of morality as you see a reflection of India with a discipline of Singapore.

The Highlights

Explore the City of Singapore with Singapore tour packages from India, which includes Suntec City, Fountain of Wealth, City Hall, Orchard Road, Swissotel the Stamford - tallest hotel in Singapore, Parliament House, The Esplanade and Merlion – Symbol of Singapore. Experiences like a Singapore Boat ride or a Cable Car ride from Mt. Faber to Sentosa Island are memorable. One striking highlight of every Singapore tour package is no doubt the Night Safari experience with encounters of wild animals. A Tram ride which takes through 7 geographical zones and a dinner at natural environment of Night Safari makes it extraordinary. The thrill of Sky Tower or Luge Ride with Sky Ride, Images of Singapore, Madame Tussads wax museum and a mono-rail ride gives a true insight of this city’s lifestyle along with our online Singapore travel package from India. Enjoying shopping spree at Mustafa with a visit to Gardens By The Bay’s Flower dome and Marina Bay sands observation deck makes the tour perfect. Most Singapore holiday packages online include a visit to Universal studios which offers excitement, thrills and unlimited entertainment. Experience thrilling shows and attractions like Light Camera Action, Transformers, Accelerator ride, Revenge of the Mummy, Water world, Jurassic Park, Madagascar - A Crate Adventure, Donkey live, Shrek 4D adventure and Flying Dragon etc. that make this tour unforgettable. Asia’s biggest SEA Aquarium which admires the rare species of the marine world, Jurong Bird Park’s vibrant coloured bird specialities and the spectacular light and water show - 'Wings of Time' show at Sentosa are the striking inclusions. A 5 days trip to Singapore from India

How do you plan a trip to Singapore from India on your own instead of a guided tour ? Singapore is one of the most sought after destinations for holiday with family and kids . Even more so with kids. It’s particularly loved amongst Indians. Since the country has a substantial Indian populations. Thus, Indian food and Indian culture is all over Singapore 🙂 . And it is also located at a flying distance of just 4 hours from India.  Moreover, Singapore makes for an idle destination to visit in May and June, when it’s kid’s summer vacation time in India!! As we took a 5 days trip to Singapore from India, we realised it is very easy to plan a 5 days trip to Singapore from India. And you can do all the planning on your own. So, in this blog post, we will tell you how you can plan your own 5 days trip to Singapore from India, while we were pondering where to go next after our beautiful Meghalaya trip.

Table of Contents

Prior to your 5 days trip to Singapore from India

Prior to your trip, you need to do your bookings and obtain your Singapore VISA. Bookings would include:

  • A round trip flight ticket to Singapore from your starting city in India
  • Your accommodation
  • Tickets to the attractions that you want to visit

Booking your flight for your 5 days trip to Singapore from India

To book your flight, compare different flight options at skyscanner.in or similar website. And choose the one that suits you the best. Since there are many flights from Delhi, Chennai, Bangalore and other major cities of India to Singapore. Do try these tips and tricks to score cheaper flights . We flew scoot airlines on our own trip to Singapore, having booked the tickets through makemytrip . It is an economical airlines. Here, we had the choice to just book a round trip ticket with a cabin luggage only option. And then later we could top it up anytime, up to a couple of hours before flying. The top-ups included:

  • Buying a check-in luggage option by paying a nominal fee.
  • Choice of a meal from the given options online on scoot airlines website at a minimal cost.
  • Web check-in with reserving the seats of our choice.

For a 5 days trip to Singapore, if you pack wisely, you can easily accommodate your luggage in a cabin only backpack or small trolley bag. We did the same for our trip, and easily accomplished it using our travel packing tricks that we use frequently now. The best advantage of a cabin only luggage is that you need not wait for your checked in luggage, which often wastes more than half an hour of time.

Singapore VISA for your 5 days trip to Singapore from India

Gardens by the bay Singapore | 5 days trip to Singapore from India

Indians require a VISA to visit Singapore. Singapore VISA is applied online. But in India, there are authorized agents who do it. You will definitely find one in your city. For South India, the VISA applications are processed from Chennai embassy while for North India from Delhi embassy. The VISA application costs around INR 1500 at the time of this writing. And the agents add a small application processing fee on top of it. We went with Thomas Cook to get our VISA application processed, however, we didn’t have an idle experience with them. Read this article for the details of how to get the Singapore VISA from India, what documents are required etc.

Booking an accommodation for your 5 days trip to Singapore from India

Singapore has many different accommodation options. Depending on what suits you, choose one at least 3 months in advance and book online to get better deals. There are hundreds of accommodations (hostels, hostels, apartments, B&Bs) listed on Booking.com and Agoda.com , our favorite go to sites for accommodation booking.

If you are traveling with friends or backpacking solo, and are on a strict budget, then there are many hostels that cost as low as INR650 per night. If you are traveling with friends or family and want to have a private space, then go for one of the many service apartment options. They range from economy to luxury. Similarly, there are many hotel options, ranging from economy (starting at INR 2500 per night) and going to luxury and super luxury. But you must book your accommodation in advance for the mid-range options, since get filled up the fastest.

If possible book something which is close to the attractions that are on your must visit list. And also close to a public transport like a MRT station.

Our hotel in Singapore

We booked our Singapore hotel, Hotel Parc Sovereign , through agoda.com . For our trip to Singapore in the year 2018 . The reason we booked this accommodation was:

  • There was free cancellation till 4 days before our travel, with total refund.
  • We needed to make the payment only 4 days before our travel, although we had booked the rooms 2 months in advance.
  • Most of the airbnb options and service apartments were not cancellable.
  • The hotel is located quite near to Kitchener Road, where there are many Indian Food Restaurants. So, we thought it would be convenient for our  elderly parents taking the trip with us, to walk and have Indian food, as they accompanied us on this trip
  • The hotel was also near to most of the attractions that we wanted to visit like Sentosa Island, Merlion, Gardens by the Bay etc.
  • There is a MRT at around 600m from the hotel, again, walkable.

What to pack for a trip to Singapore from India

Singapore has hot and humid climate all through the year. As such, you need to pack really light cloths. Checkout our comprehensive travel packing checklist to help you pack the right travel accessories , your camera for the travel and travel essentials that you must have . Also, if you are traveling with baby, toddler or kids like we us, you should definitely checkout our travel packing essentials that are made for kids ! We don’t go anywhere without them. Last, but not the least, don’t forget to pack your essential medicines for travel when traveling to Singapore. It is not easy to procure a medicine there if required. My father forgot his insulin and he couldn’t get any in Singapore without first visiting a doctor, going through a thorough assessment and then obtaining a prescription !

Deciding the things to do and places to see

There are many things to do and places to see in Singapore. Of course, not all can be done on a 5 days trip to Singapore. So, you need to choose. If you are traveling with a group of friends or doing a solo trip to Singapore , you might have a different kind of interest area than when you are traveling with family and kids. Also, whether you are interested in shopping or food, adventure or calm trip, it all would determine what you would want to add to your 5 days trip to Singapore from India.

5 days trip to Singapore from India

We visited Singapore with our parents and our kid. Thus, we added things to our own 5 days trip to Singapore from India, so that they balance the interest of everyone. Accordingly, I am categorizing the things, and you can choose one or more of them. The one in Italics are the ones we were able to cover on our trip:

  • Kids friendly attractions : Singapore Zoo , River Safari , Night S afari , Jurong Bird Park , Universal Studio Singapore , SEA Aquarium , Dolphin Island, Butterfly park & Insect Kingdom
  • Other attractions : Gardens by the bay , Merlion , Marina Bay , Botanical Gardens, Singapore Flyer
  • Shopping options: Orchard Road and the numerous malls there, Mustafa Center on Kitchener Road , Bugis Street Market, Little India

Booking tickets to the attractions

For most of the attractions that require an entry ticket, you can book the ticket online. The prices are fixed. So, you can book them anytime before your trip. This will save you time waiting in the queue at the entrance to the attractions to book your ticket. However, the queues here are not too long, like the ones for attractions in Europe that we visited last year like the Vatican in Rome ,  Engelberg and Mount Titlis or the entrance ticket to Keukenhof Tulip Gardens .

For Singapore, we had booked online the combo tickets to the Singapore Zoo , night safari, river safari and jurong bird park, which was discounted compared to the individual tickets. We had also booked the tickets to Universal Studio online. Rest all, we had thought we will book on the fly as and when we decide to visit somewhere.

Day 1 of your 5 days trip to Singapore from India

Always keep the first day light. As you need some time to give yourself after your flight, check-in and landing into a new place, before you can start full fledged exploration. Also Singapore timezone is 2.5 hrs ahead of India, which means, there might be a slight jet lag on the first day. Particularly with kids.

On the first day of our 5 days trip to Singapore from India, we arrived in Singapore at 8:30am in the morning. However, clearing immigration took around an hours time as there was a long queue. From the airport, we then went straight to Kitchener Road and had breakfast/lunch there in Shravana Bhavan , a South Indian Food Joint. Also, we bought some fruits from nearby grocery store. From here, we walked to our hotel and reached there by around 12:00 pm. Although the hotel check-in time was 3:00 pm. But luckily, our rooms got ready by 1:00 pm and then we shifted to our room and took rest for couple of hours.

Evening, we had planned to visit Marina Bay , Gardens by the Bay and Merlion . Later, while returning from there, we again had dinner at the same road, in a restaurant next to Shravana Bhavan. In fact, for the rest of the trip we visited this area for breakfast and dinner since we could easily get many Indian Restaurants here which was really convenient for our parents.

Day 2 of your 5 days trip to Singapore from India

On the second day of our 5 days trip to Singapore from India, we visited Universal Studio. We had kept the previous day light. So, we had a good night’s sleep to wake up fresh today. Post breakfast, we headed to Universal Studio on the Sentosa Island. Inside Universal Studio, we tried to mix the activities so that both we and our kid would enjoy. So, we did some kid friendly rides, some adventure rides for adults and enjoyed the Shrek 4 D Adventure movie as well. There are plenty of food options inside Universal Studio but most of them are fast food options, and there are very limited options for vegetarians. You could carry packaged and sealed snacks from outside as well. Open food containers are not allowed as per the information on the internet, but, we didn’t have any of our bags checked.

Day 3 of your 5 days trip to Singapore from India

After a day full of fun at Universal Studio Singapore, today, we headed to Sentosa Island to visit rest of the attractions here. Our day started with a visit to SEA Aquarium, which is considered one of the best aquarium parks in the world. It look us much more than the anticipated amount of time to complete our trip of SEA Aquarium, Singapore since our little one spent time appreciating each and every variety of fish that she could see. When we came out of there by noon, we had lunch near the Malaysian Food Court between the SEA Aquarium and Universal Studio entrances. Thereafter we roamed around the Sentosa Island before heading back to the main city of Singapore. We intended to cover the Butterfly park and Insect Kingdom as well. But we couldn’t as the kid was very sleepy. If you can, do add them next to your itinerary. In fact, you could add the Sentosa Island Attractions in the following order on this day of your trip:

  • SEA Aquarium
  • Butterfly park and Insect Kingdom
  • Dolphin Show
  • Cable Car ride back to the main island of Singapore

singapore travel india

Day 4 of your 5 days trip to Singapore from India

Today, start the day with visiting the Singapore Zoo as we did. Either reach early and have breakfast at one of the restaurants at the entrance of the zoo. Or, you can book a “ breakfast with Orangutans ” which your kids will definitely love. There are a couple of vegetarian Indian food options on almost all the restaurants either outside or inside the Singapore zoo. If you explore the zoo properly, it will take you around 5-6 hours easily. Arrive a little late in the zoo in case you want to combine the zoo trip with river safari and night safari otherwise you will get exhausted by evening.

Read: Visiting Singapore Zoo with kids

Once done visiting the Singapore zoo, you could get out of the zoo and get into the river safari zone which has entrance just besides the zoo. We headed for the river safari by 5:00 pm. It can be done in around 2 hours. After the river safari is over, you can have dinner at one of the cafes or restaurants in front of the zoo / river safari area. And then proceed for the night safari. The night safari starts post 7:00 pm. It will take you along the trails in the Singapore Zoo at night, where you can see the active nocturnal animals.

visit Singapore zoo with kids

Day 5 of your 5 days trip to Singapore from India

Today, being the last day of our trip to Singapore, we again kept it light. Our hotel check-out was around 12:00 pm. And our flight was in the evening. So, we visited the Jurong Bird park in the morning and had breakfast near there. Then we checked-out from our hotel by around 12:00 pm. We left our luggage at the hotel reception and ventured out for some food and shopping. Upon returning, we collected our luggage and proceeded to the Changi Airport . The Changi Airport is nothing less than a grand visiting place in itself. So, we explored the Airport before saying goodbye to Singapore.

PS: As always, ourselves being travellers with full time day jobs , we could spend only 5 days on our Singapore trip. If you have more time at hand, you can try other attractions in Singapore including Comic Con Singapore , Adventure Cove Waterpark , Changai Airport Attractions , Singapore river cruise , skyline , cable car sky pass , The Maritime Experiential Museum , Snow City Singapore , Sightseeing Bus Tour , Pororo Park  and  Trick eye museum . We have saved these to try on our next trip to Singapore 🙂 . In case you are exploring many attractions, it’s a good idea to go for an uber pass like an Unlimited attractions pass which will include the entry to many of the attractions. It will give flexibility and will be economical too.

I couldn’t help but wonder if you had the chance to explore Singapore with a professionally curated Singapore tour package. It’s often the best way to make the most of your trip, ensuring that you don’t miss out on any of the must-see attractions and experiences.

Thanks Ambuj No we didn’t go with a tour package for Singapore. We like to organise and curate our own trips. But, I agree with you, for those who can’t invest much time planning, curated tour packages are the best option

great article, thanks for sharing!

Reading this post felt like re-playing my 5-day itinerary in Singapore with family Very well written. I’ve done and experienced most of the things mentioned here. We actually tried Uber in Singapore and it was a pretty smooth experience. The Uber drivers were extremely polite and made friendly conversations.

True, the drivers and everyone else in Singapore was very helping and we had several such conversations during our visit too

Seems like an awesome adventure. Really feeling to go there. Nice travel packing tips.

Thank you Sejal!

Updates on Border Measures for Travellers from India to Singapore

With effect from 21 February 2022, 2359 hours (Singapore time), border measures for travellers entering Singapore from India will be simplified as follows: a. Travel history requirement will be reduced from 14 days to 7 days; b. Stay-Home Notice (SHN) duration will be standardised to 7 days across for travellers on non-VTL (Vaccinated Travel Lane) flights; c. Enhanced testing regime for travellers arriving on VTLs will be ceased (i.e. lifting of requirement to self-administer Antigen Rapid Test [ART] and test negative before leaving accommodation from the 2nd to 7th day of arrival in Singapore); d. VTL travellers will no longer need to perform an on-arrival PCR (Polymerase Chain Reaction) test. Instead, they will have up to 24 hours from their entry into Singapore to take a supervised self-swab (SSS) ART at one of the testing centres located across Singapore 2 Nonetheless, all VTL and non-VTL travellers from India will still need to undergo COVID-19 pre-departure test and present a negative PCR test result or a professionally administered (i.e., performed by trained medical professionals) negative ART result taken within 48 hours before their departure to Singapore. For fully vaccinated-recovered travellers, you are not required to undergo COVID-19 pre-departure test but are required to possess one of the following medical proof/documents, which must be in English or translated into English, showing positive COVID-19 infection detected 7 days to 90 days before date of departure for Singapore: EITHER A. Updates on border measures for incoming travellers from india to singapore.

With effect from 7 January 2022, 2359 hours (Singapore time), all non-Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) travellers entering Singapore from India will no longer be required to undergo a COVID-19 Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test on-arrival. This includes non-VTL Singaporean and PR travellers. Travellers will, however, still be required to undergo a PCR test at the end of their Stay-Home Notice (SHN), and have to test negative before they are allowed to exit SHN. 2 In addition, all travellers from India will still need to undergo COVID-19 pre-departure test. Travellers are to present a negative PCR test result or a professionally administered (i.e., performed by trained medical professionals) negative ART result taken within 48 hours before their departure to Singapore. It is a pre-requisite before passengers are allowed to board their flights to Singapore. They will also be required to present their valid COVID-19 negative PCR/ART test result upon arrival in Singapore. 3 Please refer to the Singapore Ministry of Health press release dated 31 December 2021 (https://www.moh.gov.sg/news-highlights/details/updates-on-border-measures-for-travellers_31_Dec_2021) and the SafeTravel website (https://safetravel.ica.gov.sg) for more details. 4 Should you have any queries, please call the SafeTravel Enquiries Helpline at +65 6812 5555 or submit your query to (www.safetravel.ica.gov.sg/contact-us) for assistance.

Currently, all Vaccinated Travel Lane (VTL) travellers entering Singapore by air are to take an On-Arrival Polymerase Chain Reaction (PCR) test, followed by supervised Antigen Rapid Tests (ART) at a Quick Test Centre (QTC) or Combined Test Centre (CTC) on Days 3 and 7. 2 With effect from 6 December 2021, 2359 hours (Singapore time), this testing regime will be augmented and all travellers on VTL will be put on a daily testing regime over 7 days using ART. This is in addition to the Pre-Departure and On-Arrival Tests. The tests are all self-administered and travellers will be required to submit the results of their self-administered ART online using a link which will be sent to them via their declared contact details after arrival in Singapore. On Days 3 and 7, the test will have to be done under supervision at a CTC or QTC. VTL travellers will be provided with a link via their contact details submitted in the Singapore Arrival Card and electronic Health Declaration Card (SGAC/eHDC) to book their supervised tests on Days 3 and 7. Booking will be on a first-come-first-served basis. Day 3 is the median incubation period and Day 7 is the exit from this testing protocol. During this 7-day period, except for days when travellers go out for their supervised tests, these travellers must test negative on their self-administered ART before going out for activities on that day. 3 All travellers from India will still need to undergo COVID-19 pre-departure test. 4 Please refer to www.safetravel.ica.gov.sg for the list of countries in the various categories, prevailing guidelines and the border measures applicable prior and upon arrival in Singapore. 5 Should you have any queries, please call the SafeTravel Enquiries Helpline at +65 6812 5555 or submit your query to (www.safetravel.ica.gov.sg/contact-us) for assistance. Precautionary Moves Adopted by Singapore in view of the Omicron Variant

To step up detection and containment of the Omicron variant, Singapore will enhance testing protocols for travellers arriving in Singapore after 2 December 2021, 2359 hours (Singapore time). These measure will minimise importation and allow prompt detection and isolation of Omicron cases. 3 All travellers from India will still need to undergo COVID-19 pre-departure test. Travellers are to present a negative PCR test result or a professionally administered (i.e. performed by trained medical professionals) negative Antigen Rapid Test (ART) result taken within 48 hours before their departure to Singapore. In addition, all travellers from India including SCs and SPRs are required to serve a 21-day Stay-Home Notice (SHN) at dedicated SHN facilities instead of the previously announced 14-day SHN and 7-day self-isolation at their place of residence. For more information, please refer to the MOH COVID-19 website (https://www.moh.gov.sg/covid-19) for updates on the latest precautionary measures implemented to further reduce the risk of importation of COVID-19 to Singapore. These include travel advisories and further restrictions on travellers coming into Singapore. Travellers may also wish to refer to the ICA COVID-19 website (https://safetravel.ica.gov.sg) and the Changi Airport COVID-19 Information Hub (https://www.changiairport.com/en/airport-guide/Covid-19.html) for updates on the latest border control measures.

Pre-departure Tests (PDT) Required for Travellers from India

Travellers who are not Singapore Citizens or Permanent Residents and who have recent travel history to India within the last 14 days prior to entry will be required to take a COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test within 72 hours before departure. Travellers will need to present a valid negative COVID-19 test result as part of pre-boarding checks to enter Singapore. Travellers aged 6 and below arriving from India will not be required to present a valid negative Covid-19 test result as a condition of entry into Singapore. The test result memo must state the negative test result in English, the particulars of the traveler/s in accordance with the particulars in the passport (date of birth, nationality & passport number), and indicate the date that the test was taken. If the personal particulars used are not stated in the passport, the traveler should have the relevant identity document on hand for verification. Singapore only accepts test results from recognised labs in India that are internationally accredited or recognised by the Indian Government. Travellers without the necessary PCR test memo will be denied entry into Singapore. If travellers are found to have produced false or forged COVID-19 test certificates, it will affect their ability to obtain or sponsor immigration facilities in the future. This requirement will take effect for those arriving in Singapore from 17 September 2020 at 0000hrs, and will apply on top of the existing requirements of a 14-day Stay-Home Notice (SHN) at dedicated SHN facilities and a negative COVID-19 test before the end of their SHN. Singapore Citizens and Permanent Residents are exempt from the pre-departure COVID-19 PCR test requirement but are still required to serve a 14-day SHN at dedicated SHN facilities and undergo COVID-19 tests (serology test and swab test where necessary) during their SHN. More details can be found on the Singapore Ministry of Health COVID-19 FAQs website (https://www.moh.gov.sg/covid-19/faqs), specifically Section H for travellers from India. Please refer to the MOH COVID-19 website (https://www.moh.gov.sg/covid-19) for updates on the latest precautionary measures implemented to further reduce the risk of importation of COVID-19 to Singapore. These include travel advisories and further restrictions on travellers coming into Singapore. SINGAPORE: Singapore's vaccinated travel lane (VTL) with India will start on Nov 29, with six designated flights daily from Chennai, Delhi and Mumbai, said the Civil Aviation Authority of Singapore (CAAS) on Sunday (Nov 21).

Applications for vaccinated travel passes (VTP) for short-term visitors and long-term pass holders from India will start on Nov 22 at 6pm Singapore time.

CAAS said on Sunday (Nov 21) that it had reached an agreement with the India's Ministry of Civil Aviation on the resumption of scheduled commercial passenger flights between the two countries.

Airlines can also operate non-VTL flights between India and Singapore, although passengers on non-VTL flights will be subject to the prevailing public health requirements, CAAS said.

"CAAS understands that travellers are looking forward to the launch of the VTL and would like to assure travellers that there is no need to rush to apply for the VTP," the authority said.

Applications for vaccinated travel passes .

Short-term visitors and long-term pass holders must apply for a VTP to enter Singapore under the VTL.

VTP applications for travellers from Indonesia and Malaysia will open on Nov 22 at 10am Singapore time.

Applications for travellers from Finland, India and Sweden will open the same day at 6pm Singapore time.

"Travellers from these countries will not be able to apply for a VTP earlier (than the stated time)," CAAS said.

The authority added that VTP applications will open for those intending to enter Singapore from Nov 29 to Jan 21, 2022.

However, it "strongly encouraged" those who intend to enter Singapore after Dec 1 to apply after Nov 24.

"All short-term visitors and long-term pass holders who meet the requirements of the VTL, will receive a VTP," it said.

To facilitate the application process, VTP applicants should have their passport and digital proof of vaccination on hand. They should also know the address of the place they intend to self-isolate while waiting for the results of their on-arrival COVID-19 polymerase chain reaction (PCR) test, CAAS said.

Travellers who require a visa for travel to Singapore should apply for their visa separately and only after their VTP is approved, CAAS said.

"They must also purchase travel insurance, with a minimum coverage of S$30,000 for COVID-19-related medical treatment and hospitalisation costs, prior to travel to Singapore. In Singapore, these visitors must also use the TraceTogether app to facilitate contact tracing," the authority added.

Nomadic Matt: Travel Cheaper, Longer, Better

Singapore Travel Guide

Last Updated: September 1, 2023

The skyline of urban Singapore, featuring skyscrapers all lit up at night

Singapore is one of my favorite cities in the world. It’s a foodie’s dream, bursting with tasty hawker stalls, delicious Indian food, and fresh seafood. There are hiking trails where you can stretch your legs and beaches for chilling out and soaking up the sun.

Home to around 5.7 million people, Singapore is a cosmopolitan city-state that gained independence from the British in 1965. It is now one of the world’s leading economic centers in shipping and banking.

Because of its status as a global economic hub, Singapore is expensive by Southeast Asian standards, with everything costing almost double what it does elsewhere in the region. In fact, it consistently ranks as one of the most expensive cities in the world!

For this reason, visiting Singapore isn’t as popular with budget travelers compared to affordable destinations like Thailand, Vietnam, or elsewhere in Southeast Asia .

But while most people come here for a couple of days just to see the highlights, the city actually has a lot to offer and requires more time than you might think. Don’t rush your visit if you can afford it; Singapore can fill any schedule.

Use this Singapore travel guide to help plan your trip, save money, and make the most of your visit to this lively multicultural metropolis.

Top 5 Things to See and Do in Singapore

The skyline of urban Singapore, featuring skyscrapers all lit up at night

1. Eat at the Boat Quay

Boat Quay is the place to go for dining and entertainment. The alfresco pubs and restaurants make Boat Quay ideal for relaxing after a long day of sightseeing. Try Wakanui for quality Japanese steak cooked over a white oak fire, or Kinara for reasonably priced North Indian cuisine.

2. See the supertrees at Gardens by the Bay

This urban landscaping project is a series of towering metal “supertrees.” There are roughly 200 species of orchids, ferns, and other tropical plants coating their structure. It’s free to walk through the outdoor gardens, but you have to pay 8 SGD for the canopy walk (which is worth doing!) as well as for the stunning Flower Dome and Cloud Forest biodomes .

3. Hang out (and party) on Sentosa

This little island is home to a nighttime light show on the beach and a host of bars, restaurants, and beaches to enjoy. Hang out at Bora Bora Beach Bar or splash out and try the cable car sky dining experience (it isn’t cheap). You can get to Sentosa via the Sentosa Express train (4 SGD). Entering on foot/bicycle is free.

4. Tour the Singapore Zoo

Spanning 70 acres, the Singapore Zoo is massive, boasting over 3,600 mammals, birds, and reptiles. There are lions, tigers, sun bears, Komodo dragons, primates, and much more! The zoo offers a night safari featuring over 900 different nocturnal animals (41% are endangered). Admission is 44 SGD and the night safari is 48 SGD.

5. Hang with the Merlions

The Merlion is Singapore’s mascot and has the head of a lion and the body of a fish. The original statute (and most impressive Merlion) can be found in Merlion Park, but the 37-meter-tall (121-foot) replica on Sentosa is also pretty cool to see. There is no entrance fee for Merlion Park.

Other Things to See and Do in Singapore

1. admire thian hock keng temple.

Thian Hock Keng (Palace of Heavenly Happiness) is one of the most photogenic buildings in Singapore. The temple originated as a small building that served the local Chinese population. It was expanded in 1840 and made from the finest materials available at the time, paid for by years of donations from the local community. It’s the oldest Chinese temple in Singapore, dedicated to Mazu, the Goddess of the Sea (Chinese immigrants came here to ask for safe passage before leaving to cross the South China Sea). The temple was designated as a national monument in 1973. Admission is free.

2. Explore Bukit Timah Nature Reserve

Bukit Timah, located within Singapore’s only remaining stretch of rainforest, is the country’s premier eco-tourism attraction. On the hiking and biking trails, you’ll be able to get up close to the macaques, squirrels, flying lemurs, and various species of birds. The reserve covers over 400 acres and is 30 minutes from the city center. It’s open daily from 7am-7pm. The weekends get really busy, so come during the week if you want to avoid the crowds.

3. Wander around Chinatown

Chinatown encompasses two square kilometers of traditional Chinese life, nestled beside the modern Central Business District. This remains the place to get a real sense of Chinese culture within Singapore. The streets are filled with temples, craft shops, stalls, and restaurants and are a great place to pick up a bargain. Head down Chinatown Food Street to find some char kway teow (stir-fried noodles) or grilled meats. If you can, eat at Hong Kong Soya Sauce Chicken Rice and Noodle (aka Hawker Chan), the world’s most affordable Michelin-starred restaurant. Tian Tian Hainanese Chicken Rice is another Michelin-starred hawker stall worth a visit. Like Hawker Chan’s, it’s located in the Maxwell Hawker Center.

4. Eat hawker food

Singapore’s hawker food scene is one of the best in the world. It has been recognized by Michelin in 2016 with the world’s first street food Michelin star and by UNESCO in 2020 with Cultural Heritage status. Whether you go to Newton Food Center (of Crazy Rich Asian fame), to the Old Airport Hawker (many locals’ favorite), or to one of the other 103 centers across the island, you won’t be disappointed and you can grab a cheap meal surrounded by locals. Don’t miss the chili crab, satay, dim sum (dumplings), or nasi lemak (fried chicken with coconut rice). If you’re not sure where to go or what to eat, take a guided food tour!

5. Take a trip to Pulau Ubin

This island lies off the northeastern coast. It’s incredibly different from the modern city; locals still use a diesel generator for electricity and fetch water from wells. Rent a bike and explore the sights, villages, and beaches of this island. To get there, hop on a bumboat from the Changi Point Ferry Terminal, which costs about 3 SGD and takes 10-15 minutes. There are no fixed departure times — just line up and wait. Very few tourists make it out this way; it’s one of the most off-the-beaten-path things you can do here.

6. Relax in the Singapore Botanic Gardens

The Botanic Gardens lie close to the city and consist of 128 acres of gardens and forest. Founded in 1859, the main attraction is the National Orchid Garden, home to over 1,000 species of orchids. There is also a ginger garden, a rainforest, and various streams and waterfalls to explore. The Botanic Gardens are Singapore’s first UNESCO World Heritage site (and the only tropical botanic garden on UNESCO’s World Heritage List). It’s open daily from 5am-12am, and admission is free to everything except the National Orchid Garden, which is 15 SGD.

7. Eat in Little India

No trip to Singapore is complete without a visit to Little India, where you can get amazing, cheap, and delicious food, fresh vegetables, snacks, and souvenirs. Seek out local favorites like roti prata (pancakes) and teh tarik (“pulled” tea). Make sure you stop off at the Tekka Center, a hawker center with Indian clothing, groceries, and food. The food here is cheap and delicious and makes for an authentic Little India experience.

8. Learn about Singapore’s History

For a more cultural experience, visit the former British naval base of Fort Siloso located on Sentosa. It’s a decommissioned coastal artillery battery the only preserved fort on the coast of Singapore, providing a fantastic look into the city-state’s complicated history. You’ll get to see the coastal guns and the remains of tunnels under the fort. It’s a well-constructed, interactive attraction. Entrance is free.

9. Visit Sri Mariamman Temple

This extremely colorful, ornate temple is the oldest Hindu temple in Singapore, built in 1827 in Chinatown. It was constructed in what is known as the Dravidian style and is devoted to the goddess Mariamman, known for curing illnesses and diseases. During the post-war colonial period, it was a hub for community activities and was even the Registry of Marriages for Hindus. Admission is free.

10. Watch a free concert

The Singapore Symphony Orchestra hosts various free concerts at different venues around the country. You might just be lucky enough to catch one of their shows — just check their website for details during your visit.

11. Visit the MacRitchie Reservoir Park

MacRitchie Reservoir is Singapore’s oldest reservoir, dating back to 1868. Today, this beautiful and lush city park is a relaxing place to spend an afternoon. Walk the 8-kilometer (5-mile) treetop hike, with bridges suspended high above the forest floor, where you might see long-tailed macaque monkeys, squirrels, monitor lizards, owls, and even flying lemurs. In addition to the TreeTop Walk, there’s also a network of walking trails. Admission is free.

12. Visit the National Museum of Singapore

First opened in 1849, this is the oldest museum in Singapore . Learn about the country’s history, culture, and people through the various permanent and temporary exhibitions. There are gold ornaments, 18th-century drawings and artwork, the mace used by King George VI when he declared Singapore a city in 1951, and the Singapore Stone (an indecipherable stone with inscriptions from the 10th century). Admission is 15 SGD.

13. Admire the street art

Singapore has some really incredible street art to admire. While none of it is spontaneous (unauthorized graffiti is illegal), it can be found all over the island. Yip Yew Chong is probably the best-known artist as he has murals everywhere from Chinatown to the East Coast. His images depict scenes from days gone by and range from small pictures to entire walls. Kampong Glam, Chinatown, and Little India all have masses of art to look at, as does the east coast, but you can find it on random buildings in most areas. Take a walking tour if you want more detail, or Art Walk Singapore has three self-guided walks outlined on their website.

14. Marvel at the rain vortex in Jewel

Located adjacent to Changi International Airport, Jewel Mall is home to the world’s tallest indoor waterfall. Cascading from the roof, the water falls seven stories (around 130 feet) to the basement through a huge tiered garden. At night it is lit up for a light and music show. There’s more to do at Jewel if you have time including two mazes, a canopy bridge, sky nets, slides, and a topiary walk. It’s free to see the rain vortex and prices range from 5-22 SGD each for the other activities. You can get bundles that work out cheaper.

15. Explore Kampong Glam

Also known by its most popular street, Haji Lane, and as the Arab Quarter, Kampong Glam is one of Singapore’s oldest neighborhoods. The shophouses here are now stores selling textiles, rugs, and Turkish homewares such as dishes and glass lamps. There are some great Arabic restaurants around here all under the shadow of the enormous golden-domed Sultan Mosque. There’s some street art around here and Haji Lane has some cool eclectic shops by day and a buzzing nightlife with outdoor live music by night. If you have time, check out the Malay Heritage Center (admission is 8 SGD).

16. Get spooked at Haw Par Villa

Hands down the quirkiest thing you can do or see in Singapore, Haw Par Villa is a huge outdoor art gallery. It was built in 1937 by Aw Boon Haw, a millionaire philanthropist one of the men behind Tiger Balm, for his younger brother. Once a theme park for locals, Haw Par Villa was also used as an observation point by the Japanese army during World War II. It’s filled with dioramas depicting Chinese mythology and has recently reopened after a 9-month refurbishment and renovation project. Entry to the grounds is free but the museum — called Hell’s Museum as it includes an exhibit depicting the 10 Courts of Hell — is 18 SGD.

Singapore Travel Costs

The skyline of urban Singapore, featuring skyscrapers all lit up at night

A budget hotel room with amenities like air-conditioning, private bathrooms, free Wi-Fi, and a TV starts around 65 SGD per night. Most larger chain hotels cost at least 80-110 SGD per night.

Airbnb is available in Singapore, with private rooms starting at 25 SGD per night (though they average closer to 60 SGD). Entire homes/apartments average 85 SGD per night.

Food – As a cosmopolitan hub, Singapore has food from all over the world, however, there is an abundance of Chinese and Indian food, which is usually around 8-9 SGD per meal. Rice or noodles are usually the backbone of most meals, and popular dishes include steamed chicken, chili crab, fishhead curry, satay, and nasi lemak (coconut rice cooked in a pandan leaf). The city’s hawker centers (large halls full of various food stalls) are one of the most popular and cheapest places to try Singapore’s vibrant cuisine.

As for Singaporean specialties, try the seafood, which costs around 20-35 SGD for a main dish. For drinks, beer is typically 8-10 SGD, a glass of wine is about 10-16 SGD, and a cappuccino is around 5 SGD.

There are also plenty of low-cost eateries around Singapore, with street stalls typically selling food for less than 6 SGD per meal. A fast-food burger is around 8-10 SGD while sandwiches at a café are around 11-14 SGD. There are many restaurants offering a set lunch menu for around 12-16 SGD, and a dish at dinner in most casual restaurants is around 20 SGD. After that, the sky is the limit.

If you want to cook your own meals, expect to pay 95 SGD per week for basic staples like rice, noodles, vegetables, and some meat or fish.

Backpacking Singapore Suggested Budgets

If you’re backpacking Singapore, expect to spend around 90 SDG per day. This budget covers staying in a hostel dorm, eating at the cheap hawker stalls and in Little India, cooking some meals, limiting your drinking, using public transportation to get around, and doing mostly free activities like walking tours and enjoying nature.

On a more mid-range budget of 175 SGD per day, you can stay in a private hostel room or Airbnb, eat out for all your meals at cheaper hawker stalls, enjoy a few drinks, take the occasional taxi to get around, and do more paid activities like visiting the zoo and the botanic gardens.

On a “luxury” budget of 300 SGD or more per day, you can eat out for all your meals, take taxis everywhere, stay in a hotel, and do whatever tours and activities you want. This is just the ground floor for luxury though. The sky is the limit!

You can use the chart below to get some idea of how much you need to budget daily, depending on your travel style. Keep in mind these are daily averages — some days you’ll spend more, some days you’ll spend less (you might spend less every day). We just want to give you a general idea of how to make your budget. Prices are in SGD.

Singapore Travel Guide: Money-Saving Tips

Singapore isn’t a super cheap destination so you’ll need to tread carefully if you want to avoid blowing your budget. Here are some ways you can save money during your visit:

  • Take public transit – Singapore’s public transit system is fast and efficient, making it the best way to get around. Unlimited travel on public transport is 10 SGD per day with a Singapore Tourist Pass. If you’re staying a few days, the pass gets cheaper per day, as a two-day pass is 16 SGD and a three-day pass is 20 SGD.
  • Eat on Smith Street – The stalls here offer food for less than 6 SGD and are a great place to sample local snacks.
  • Eat cheap – Save money on food by eating in Little India, Chinatown, or the hawker stalls throughout the city. Meals in these places cost only a few dollars and are some of the tastiest around!
  • Stay with a local – Use Couchsurfing to stay with a local for free. You’ll not only save money but you’ll get to connect with someone who can share their insider tips and advice.
  • Stick to happy hour – Alcohol is expensive in Singapore, so limit your drinking to save money. If you do plan on drinking, stick to the happy hours.
  • Avoid bottled water – The tap water here is perfectly fine to drink, so avoid buying water and just refill your bottle. It will save you money and it’s better for the environment! LifeStraw is my go-to brand as their bottles have built-in filters to ensure your water is always clean and safe.

How to Get Around Singapore

The skyline of urban Singapore, featuring skyscrapers all lit up at night

Like the MRT, Singapore’s bus system is extensive and efficient. You can use your Singapore Tourist Pass on the buses as well. You can also pay with cash, but it has to be the exact change. A single trip costs between 1.40-2.50 SGD.

Trishaws – Trishaws (like rickshaws) are less popular these days in Singapore, and now they’re largely used for guided tours that cost around 40 SGD for a 30-minute run. Trishaw Uncle is the only licensed trishaw tour operator in the city, offering various guided tours by trishaw.

Taxi – Taxis are comfortable and convenient, but they’re not cheap! All cabs are metered, but there might be surcharges depending on the company and where you’re going. For example, if you’re hiring a taxi from midnight to 6am there is a 50% surcharge on the total metered cost, while rides in the mornings and evenings carry a 25% surcharge. Prices start at 3.20 SGD and then increase by 0.22 SGD every 400 meters. Skip them if you can!

When to Go to Singapore

It’s always a good time to visit Singapore! The island is warm year-round with a tropical climate that boasts daily temperatures in the high 20s°C (80s°F). December to June is the busiest time to visit, especially during the Chinese New Year. February-April is the driest period with the most sunshine and least amount of rain.

Monsoons occur between December-March, with December usually being the rainiest month. The weather is windy, cloudy, and humid.

Late summer and early fall (July to October) are also a good time to visit if you’re hoping to avoid all the tourist traffic. The weather is still pleasant, averaging around 30°C (87°F) each day, and accommodation might be a bit cheaper during this time as well.

How to Stay Safe in Singapore

Singapore is an incredibly safe place to backpack and travel — even if you’re traveling solo, and even as a solo female traveler. In fact, it’s one of the safest countries in the world (it’s currently the 11th safest country).

Solo female travelers should feel comfortable here, though the standard precautions apply (don’t walk home alone at night, don’t accept drinks from strangers, etc.)

Be aware that penalties for breaking the law here are stiff. For example, you’ll be fined up to 1,000 SGD for things like littering, spitting, and smoking in public. Singapore is also notoriously strict on drugs. If you’re caught even with marijuana in your system you could do jail time. In short, say no to drugs here!

Scams are rare in Singapore, however, if you’re worried about getting ripped off you can read about common travel scams to avoid here .

If you experience an emergency, dial 999 for assistance.

Always trust your gut instinct. If a taxi driver seems shady, stop the cab and get out. Make copies of your personal documents, including your passport and ID. Forward your itinerary along to loved ones so they’ll know where you are.

If you don’t do it at home, don’t do it when you’re in Singapore. Follow that rule and you’ll be fine.

The most important piece of advice I can offer is to purchase good travel insurance. Travel insurance will protect you against illness, injury, theft, and cancellations. It’s comprehensive protection in case anything goes wrong. I never go on a trip without it as I’ve had to use it many times in the past. You can use the widget below to find the policy right for you:

Singapore Travel Guide: The Best Booking Resources

These are my favorite companies to use when I travel. They consistently have the best deals, offer world-class customer service and great value, and overall, are better than their competitors. They are the companies I use the most and are always the starting point in my search for travel deals.

  • Skyscanner – Skyscanner is my favorite flight search engine. They search small websites and budget airlines that larger search sites tend to miss. They are hands down the number one place to start.
  • Hostelworld – This is the best hostel accommodation site out there with the largest inventory, best search interface, and widest availability.
  • Agoda – Other than Hostelworld, Agoda is the best hotel accommodation site for Asia.
  • Booking.com – The best all around booking site that constantly provides the cheapest and lowest rates. They have the widest selection of budget accommodation. In all my tests, they’ve always had the cheapest rates out of all the booking websites.
  • Get Your Guide – Get Your Guide is a huge online marketplace for tours and excursions. They have tons of tour options available in cities all around the world, including everything from cooking classes, walking tours, street art lessons, and more!
  • SafetyWing – Safety Wing offers convenient and affordable plans tailored to digital nomads and long-term travelers. They have cheap monthly plans, great customer service, and an easy-to-use claims process that makes it perfect for those on the road.
  • LifeStraw – My go-to company for reusable water bottles with built-in filters so you can ensure your drinking water is always clean and safe.
  • Unbound Merino – They make lightweight, durable, easy-to-clean travel clothing.

11 things to know before visiting Singapore

Plan for your trip to Singapore with these things you should know and insider tips © Jakub Zajic / Getty Images

Singapore has a well-cultivated image of being a safe country .

Too safe perhaps for some, who balk at its infamously strict rules and fines for flouting them, and find the gleaming modern city too sanitized for their liking. Others appreciate the clean streets and manicured gardens amidst the tall buildings along with the intriguing mix of people that make up Singapore’s multifaceted culture.

As a Singaporean who’s lived here all her life (and who has always had to explain the country to fellow travelers in foreign hostel common rooms) here’s what you need to know about Singapore, its cultural landscape, and its local customs and quirks, to help you plan your trip to the Little Red Dot.

1. Singapore is small, but with lots to see and do

Compact Singapore takes less than an hour to drive from end to end but there’s a lot packed into this small country. For a first-time visitor, three to four days is usually sufficient to see the main highlights and get a feel of the top things to do in Singapore .

If you’re really short on time, plan a layover with at least 5.5 hours and you can join one of three free transit tours organized by the excellent Changi Airport for a quick taster of what the country has to offer.

To explore Singapore, Indian passport holders need to obtain a Singapore tourist visa after booking the Singapore tour package. Best Time For Singapore Trip:

Singapore is a year-round destination, but determining the best time to visit Singapore for booking a Singapore Tour Package from India depends entirely on your preferences and schedule.

1) Peak Season: The average temperature from November to January in Singapore ranges between 25 degrees to 31 degrees Celsius. November to January and June to July witness a huge footfall as Singapore receives minimum rain, low humidity, and ample sunshine. Various events and festivals are held during these months, including New Year and Christmas. If you are a shopping enthusiast and plan your Singapore tour d uring June and July, do take advantage of the Great Singapore Sale. It is also an ideal time to explore Sentosa Island, one of the most captivating places to visit in Singapore .

2) Shoulder Season : Singapore's shoulder season typically occurs between February and April, as well as September and early November. During this time, visitors can enjoy a balance of favourable weather conditions, making it an ideal time to explore the city-state. Singapore has more moderate temperatures during the shoulder season, with a lower chance of heavy rainfall than during the monsoon season. This creates a pleasant environment for outdoor activities and sightseeing. Furthermore, lodging and other travel-related expenses may be less expensive than during peak tourist season. For those booking a Singapore Tour Package, there are numerous things to do in Singapore , taking advantage of the pleasant weather and potentially more budget-friendly options.

3) Waning Season: October to August is considered to be the waning season during which the prices of accommodations and flights are cheaper. The Southwest Monsoon sets in during this time, leading to warm and balmy weather. If you are planning a Singapore Tour Package from India during this time, you might be lucky enough to get accommodation at less expensive prices.

About Singapore

Singapore has been always been a popular vacation destination for people since decades. One of the reasons why it is so famed is because of its ability to keep reinventing itself every few years. Whether it’s in terms of iconic landmarks or beautiful sights and fantastic things to do, Singapore has become a melting pot of culture and is well-known among people for its delicious street food and high-end shopping malls. Singapore is the upper crust when it comes to holidaying in Asia as it offers a cosmopolitan experience unmatched by any other Asian destination.

Singapore has everything going for it – a superb transport system, glitzy nightlife, awe-inspiring architecture, and entertainment options that begin right at the Changi Airport which has consistently been chosen as one of the top airports in the world and for good reason too. Singapore tourists are sure to find themselves spoiled for choice as they come across the many different facets of this city and all that there is to explore.

  • Singapore is the only island city-state in the world & has a population of approximately 5.5 million people
  • It is the 4th largest financial center in the world; the 2nd busiest port in the world; one of the biggest tourist attractions in the world; one of the highest per capita incomes and standard of living in the world.
  • The tallest indoor waterfall in the world is located in Singapore at the Gardens by the Bay, and it stands at a height of 35 meters
  • Singapore was home to the world’s first night zoo
  • Singapore pioneered the first F1 night race
  • Military service is mandatory for all men in Singapore for two years after finishing high school

Singapore has four major languages – English, Malay, Tamil and Mandarin, apart from this, the locals also speak “Singlish” which is a very peculiar language spoken by mixing English with various local dialects and not bound by rules of grammar

  • To-long! – Help!
  • Apa kabar – Hello
  • Se la mat jalan – Good bye
  • Terima kasih – Thank you
  • Ya – Yes
  • Teedak – No
  • Ta-hoo-kah ber -da ha sa Ingris? – Do you speak English?
  • Sa-ya tee dak fa-ham – I don’t understand
  • Sama sama – Same

Best Time to Visit Singapore

Although Singapore is a year-round destination, the months from November to January, which are the winter months can be the best time to visit Singapore . The weather is not as hot and humid as it is throughout the rest of the year. Christmas and New Year are celebrated with great gusto here and it’s a complete treat for the senses if you happen to visit during this time. The downside is that this is also peak time and the crowds can be quite a deterrent especially if you were looking for a quiet vacation. Also, since the Chinese New Year falls during this time, it’s very likely that you will find ticket and accommodation prices soaring if you haven’t booked ahead of time.

Another great time to visit Singapore is during the month of July. This is especially if you love shopping or food because Singapore has the Great Singapore Sale and Singapore Food Festival during this time. April is also a good time to visit if you’re looking to save money on flights and bookings while the offseason in Singapore is between August and October. Since Singapore hosts the Singapore Grand Prix in mid-September, you can however expect an influx of tourists. But apart from that, hotel rates during this time are quite manageable.

How to Reach Singapore

The best way to reach Singapore is by flight. Singapore is well-connected to India by several direct flights from various cities. There are numerous major airlines that connect India with Singapore and some of these include Air India, Singapore Airlines, Thai Airlines and Tiger Airways to name a few. Some of the cities from where you can fly directly to Singapore include New Delhi, Chennai, Mumbai, and Bangalore. Singapore’s Changi Airport is stunning and offers several facilities like a swimming pool, gym and gorgeous gardens, and even movie theatres, offering passengers an unforgettable experience.

If you’re traveling from Malaysia, then you can reach Singapore by road too. There’s a causeway between Singapore and Johor Bahru and you can rent a car and drive between both countries yourself. You can also opt to hire a taxi or simply take a bus if you wish to travel from Malaysia to Singapore. You can also travel to Singapore by train, and there are two lines. One connects Singapore with Malaysia and the other connects it with Thailand.

Local transport in Singapore is efficient and organized. You can opt for the MRT for which you can take the EZ-Link Card or a Singapore Tourist Pass if you’re staying for more than a week. The buses are also well-connected and alternatively, you can try the trishaws, but you need to have decent bargaining skills, or you’ll end up spending a lot of money.

Places to Visit in Singapore

Singapore is one of the most electric cities that you can find yourself in, a city that is vibrant and alive with culture, technology and the most amazing food you can find. As a city that constantly keeps changing to keep up with the times, it’s also a city that never stays suspended in time. It’s always evolving and yet, there are some places to visit in Singapore  that are perennial favourites. Here are some of them.

Sentosa Island

Universal studios, botanic gardens, gardens by the bay, jurong bird park.

A trip to Singapore simply must include a visit to Universal Studios in Resorts World Sentosa, which has thrilling and exciting rides as well as some spectacular shows. A 49-acre park with seven fun zones, Universal Studios offers the kind of enjoyment that makes adults wish they were back in their childhood. A perfect family outing that includes some hair-raising rides featuring some of the most famous pop culture icons such as Transformers, Jurassic Park, and Sesame Street. Some of the shows here are also extremely thrilling.

Even if you’re not much of a nature enthusiast, you’ll be stunned by the gorgeous greenery of the Singapore Botanic Gardens that is spread out over 82 hectares and has more than 10,000 species of plants and trees. The National Orchid Garden and the Jacob Ballas Children’s Garden are wonderful, but the real treat is the interactive rainforest exhibit which is an unforgettable experience with its museums, statues, fountains and a beautiful lake to top it all.

Right in the middle of Singapore, you’ll come across these stunning structures that look like something out a futuristic movie. These Supertree structures which are a part of the Gardens by the Bay are simply fantastical and they are connected by a skyway that allows people to go on a skywalk that looks out over the gardens. The greenhouse is also shaped like a seashell and it is called the Flower Dome and is currently the largest glass greenhouse in the world. The Super trees, the gardens and the conservatories are spectacular.

If you are looking for a bustling look at contemporary Chinese culture in Singapore, then look no further than Chinatown with its heritage red lanterns, authentic and delicious Chinese food, traditional shops and temples and much more. It’s easy to lose yourself in the middle of this cultivated chaos filled with ceremonies and cultural relics that it’s quite easy to forget that you’re in modern Singapore. Food is also one of the big draws here, especially delicious street food that’s cheap and has a wide variety.

One of the most famous landmarks of Singapore is the Jurong Bird Park which is known to have around 5000 birds from 400 different species. There are several interactive shows and exhibits that will keep you enthralled. But the most spectacular sight here is the Waterfall Aviary which is a delight to the senses. The 30m high waterfall is the world’s largest walk-in aviary. Other things to see here include the Penguin Coast, the Pelican Cove and the Flamingo Lake.

Food in Singapore

Would you believe it that some people make a trip to Singapore, just to enjoy the food? Yes, it’s true. While the range of food in Singapore is quite mind-boggling, here are a few dishes that you must try while you are here.

One of the most popular dishes that you should certainly try when in Singapore is BakChorMee which translates to minced meat and noodles. However, the dish itself is not as mundane as the translation, because it’s a glorious combination of minced meat layered with broth and flat egg noodles, spiced with chilies and a tangy aftertaste.

It’s quite possible that you will have the best dim sums of your life in Singapore. While available all over China and other Asian countries, the dim sum here melts in the mouth and is stuffed with curried chicken, vegetables, pork, beef or seafood. Dim sum in Singapore can often veer into the main course category as people just can’t stop eating them!

This is street food at its best. Strips of meat, be it beef, chicken or pork are skewered and basted with sauce to create a chewy and delicious delight which is often served with peanut sauce and onion rings. This tasty treat is found in most street food outlets and is often sold out very fast.

Drinking Water

Singapore tap water is safe & potable to drink. The water in Singapore undergoes a multi-step purification process, which includes coagulation, sedimentation, filtration, and disinfection. The water is then stored in covered reservoirs and distributed through a network of pipes to homes and businesses throughout the country.

Singapore's multi-ethnic culture and heritage presents a multitude of colourful cuisines, each with its own unique flavor. From Michelin-starred delicacies and international cuisines to scrumptious creations by homegrown chefs and timeless hawker favorite’s, this is where you can taste it all. Savour new flavours, new atmospheres, and discover the obsession that goes into crafting every dish.

  • Chwee kueh: It may not be the prettiest belle at the ball, but we think chwee kueh is in a league of its own. It’s definitely one of our top picks for breakfast foods around the island. Nothing beats the simplicity of chewy rice cakes. And when you slather them in salty chye poh and tangy chilli, you’ve got the perfect bite.
  • Wanton mee: A perfect bowl of wanton noodles should be a medley of wildly contrasting textures. Firm, springy noodles drenched in sauce, soft dumplings stuffed with flavourful meat, and thick char siew (barbecued pork) slices with a good bit of charring. Some of our top picks include Ji Ji Wanton Noodle Specialist and Fei Fei Roasted Noodle.
  • Char kway teow: This fried rice noodle dish may not score major points for presentation, but we guarantee you it’s darned tasty. What you’ll get is a plate of flat rice noodles, stir-fried in sweet dark soy sauce with fishcake, egg, bean sprouts, prawns and cockles. It’s no secret that this doesn’t register high on the health-o-meter, but we just can’t resist digging into a plate at the much-lauded Armenian Street Char Kway Teow.

This co-founder of Singapore robotics company Lionsbot once sold cleaning equipment from door to door

Dylan Ng and his wife started their first company with just S$4,000. They now run a multi-million-dollar cleaning empire.

In a fortress-like Kranji factory standing at the epicentre of Singapore’s circular ambitions, forklifts disgorged by recycling and waste management plants chunter up a winding multi-storey carpark. It’s not where you might expect to find what’s billed as Southeast Asia’s largest cleaning robot factory.

Here, a phalanx of hulking Mars rover-reminiscent machines stand sentinel beside a makeshift maze, where their smaller platoon mates glide soundlessly under the scrutiny of men in black. Slated to crank out some 4,000 robots annually to serve clients in more than 30 markets, homegrown robotics firm Lionsbot’s cavernous new S$12 million (US$9.07 million) facility is a glimpse at Singapore’s advanced manufacturing heft.

That’s what makes it almost inconceivable that the firm — ranked fifth among Singapore’s fastest growing companies in 2024 — began as a two-man outfit peddling cleaning equipment from door to door.  The duo behind the rough spun operation are university sweethearts Dylan Ng and Michelle Seow. In 2002, they had graduated with an entrepreneurial bent and urge to “take the path less travelled.”

Ng, an avid tinkerer who used to put together custom-built desktop computers for sale to family and friends, met Seow at an accounting class after dropping out of his engineering module. He’d felt stultified by established systems and processes, and hankered for creative freedom.

“I’m not exactly very good at following rules, but I like generating ideas and making things come to life,” shared Ng.

His future wife, in contrast, was “a very conscientious and attentive student” with whom he’d struck up a conversation after showing her his PalmPilot. Noughties flex aside, the marketing majors were both beguiled by the same north star. Having studied selling dreams for a living, they’d sold themselves the dream of starting their own business.

So, when a friend approached them to sell steam cleaners for commission, they swooped in on the offer.

“We’re crazy risk-takers. We told ourselves, ‘What have you got to lose? If it doesn’t work out, then let’s get a job’,” recalled Ng.

Bristling with optimism — or depending on your general outlook, foolhardiness — they plonked down their entire savings of S$2,000 each to bootstrap SuperSteam, a distributor of professional cleaning equipment and chemicals. They conducted the requisite research, rehearsed their pitch and cast off into the ponderous, pavement pounding unknown of sales demonstrations.

Revenue came in fits and starts, while rejection and feeling tuckered out from hauling bulky equipment up flights of stairs were all in a day’s work.

“We rented a van at S$50 per day, which was all the money we had, so we often skipped lunch to buy petrol,” recounted Ng. University peers expressed shock at their life choice, eschewing the comfortable corporate world to rattle around in clapped out second-hand vans.

At the nadir of their early struggles, they were forced to move their operation from an office to the garage belonging to Ng’s mother. But the couple plugged away at their sales spiels nonetheless, boosted by supportive family, friends and strangers who purchased their products. Eventually, they changed tack, targeting commercial clients such as food manufacturers instead of individual consumers. To wrest an edge over established competitors, they worked closely with customers to understand their needs, travelled to improve their repertoire of equipment and began formulating cleaning chemicals. The latter is a process Ng described as complicated, creative and akin to “cooking chicken soup.”

“There were many established players in the market, but they weren’t innovating. But Michelle and I had a lot of hunger in us, and an overriding mission to feed the entire team and build a better business that would stand the test of time,” said Ng.

Their journey was punctuated by sobering lessons, such as when they had to downsize to arrest a decline in revenue, on the back of a bumper sales year where they’d tripled their headcount. On numerous occasions, they’d be sweating bullets, with their ability to make payroll hinged upon a single pay cheque.

“Michelle and I are a very good team together. She’d help me make appointments and I’d start the demonstrations at food factories at five in the morning. I’d end the day at six, and by the time I crawled back into bed, I wished I was dead,” recalled the 48-year-old, who admitted that his detail-oriented wife is a foil for his “super messy” self.

AUTOMATION CALLS

Their tenacity prevailed. By 2017, the couple had anchored SuperSteam as a market leader that netted a multi-million-dollar annual profit. Feeling the ennui of career stagnation settling in, they began rooting around for their next white whale. A religious man, Ng chalks up their success to divine intervention. Despite flying close to the wind, their first venture had somehow managed to ride out the white-knuckle moments.

singapore travel india

This time, as bright-eyed talk about newly launched government support for automation floated around the ether, they decided to plunge into manufacturing cleaning robots in 2018. It was on the nose, given Singapore’s ageing workforce and labour crunch.

Having charted their course, the couple said a prayer. Within a week, their phone rang. On the line was a teammate of Mohan Rajesh Elara, an associate professor with the Engineering Product Development Pillar at the Singapore University of Technology and Design (SUTD). His proposition held piquancy: “He said: ‘Hey, my professor bought one of your machines and made it semi-robotic. Would you like to see it?’” recalled Ng.

Lionsbot’s beginnings sound especially serendipitous when narrated by Ng, who — good-humoured with a coaxing voice — could be pegged for a youth counsellor. In reality, he and his wife had been scoping out cleaning robots overseas for several years, unable to find a suitable fit.

Developing their own robots may have, at the time, seemed like a flight of fancy, but Professor Mohan’s robotics expertise lent them ballast, alongside the couple’s industry connections. The trio started Lionsbot with a team of five engineers, who worked at breakneck speed to develop their first prototype in just seven months.

Their feat of engineering, the anthropomorphic LeoBot, was a crowd-pleaser. “We focused a lot on what we call the robot personality,” explained Ng. “The LeoBots had heads, expressive eyes and could talk, as well as clean well. So, that helped us get the world’s attention; all the other robots out there looked like little fridges or dustbins that moved,” he added.

STAY FLEET-FOOTED

From the jump, Lionsbot has played to its strengths as a smaller, faster and more agile player, rolling out five generations of cleaning robots in six years. Iterating fast bears risk. Ng admits he’s learnt to be more financially prudent and circumspect in planning, after witnessing competitors flame out due to swelling operating expenses.

singapore travel india

He credits the company’s success to his “young and talented team” of employees who’ve had to don multiple hats and work in tandem to keep pace with the market. For instance, he shared that while aesthetics once took precedence, companies now seek the most cost-effective robots.

To that end, his team has conjured the R3 Scrub Pro, a compact machine equipped with advanced AI and 3D LiDAR technology to detect and adapt to its surroundings precisely.

Lionsbot’s high-tech creations are deployed at mega hubs such as Changi Airport, Amsterdam Airport Schiphol and London Luton Airport. The firm has a firm foothold in the US and the Netherlands, where it has established outposts. With Western customers increasingly chary of data breeches, it isn’t implausible that this powerhouse from a tiny island nation recognised for its sound cybersecurity policies has managed to horn in on a market dominated by the Chinese.

While Singapore has been said to boast the world’s highest adoption rate of industrial robots, Ng revealed that the general sentiment on the ground overseas towards the country’s cleaning robot manufacturing capabilities is a resounding, “Huh?” Yet, his company has cultivated a reputation for quality. He says a recent infiltration of shell cleaning robot companies registered in Singapore bears testament to the country’s growing cachet in the field.

And he’s got vaulting ambitions to match. Lionsbot is building the holy grail of cleaning robots: “One that can be used without further professional mapping or training.” It’s also gearing up for a NASDAQ listing in 2027.
