Thinking about going on a Chitwan jungle safari? Great idea! This Chitwan National Park safari guide will tell you how to get there, where to book, and what animals you’ll see while on safari in Chitwan National Park. We’ll also cover what to pack and what not to pack, as well as when to go. Let’s dive in!

Chitwan National Park was one of my most-anticipated stops while I was visiting Nepal .

I’d experienced wildlife safaris before in Tanzania , and though I was lucky enough to see the Big Five and much more, Chitwan would be a new experience altogether.

The terrain was wildly different, and the animals were a world away. One horned rhinos and the unique gharial crocodile can all be seen here… and I could not wait to see them for myself.

If you are planning a Chitwan jungle safari, but aren’t sure where to start, this article will help you. Here we will cover where to go and what to see in Chitwan, what (and what not) to wear on safari, as well as top safari tours.

From the lush green jungle to the clear rivers to the incredible animal life, here is everything you need to know about a Chitwan jungle safari!

Planning a Chitwan Jungle Safari

Chitwan National Park was the first national park of Nepal.

Established in 1973, this expansive park covers 932 km² of lush subtropical terrain. Nestled in the Inner Terai lowlands, it offers a diverse landscape ranging from peaceful river valleys to majestic Churia Hills.

Chitwan National Park is filled with wild and endangered animals. From the mighty one-horned rhinoceros, to the regal Bengal tiger, you’ll likely encounter the many majestic creatures that call this park home.

If you have the chance to go on a Chitwan National Park safari, you should absolutely do it! In this guide, I will tell you exactly how to plan and what to expect in Chitwan National Park.

When to go on a Chitwan National Park safari

If you are able to arrange it, the best time to visit Chitwan National Park is in April and May. Though these months are hot, reaching up into the low triple digits, trust me – it will be worth it!

This is because April and May are the end of the dry season in Nepal . This means that animals are much more likely to come out into the open, looking for watering holes, rather than staying hidden in the jungle.

If you want to visit during a more comfortable temperature range, then October to early March is the best for you. Temperatures will sit around the mid-70s, but be forewarned. Though you are more comfortable, you may not see as many animals.

Winter, on the other hand, gets downright cold. January is the chilliest month, skimming freezing at night.

I booked my safari in Chitwan National Park within the first half of May. While it definitely was hot and extremely sunny each day, I wouldn’t change that decision. I saw more animals than expected and we had long, dry days.

Pro Tip: This Chitwan jungle safari follows the exact route I took. It includes a walking safari, Jeep safari, and dugout canoe ride. Swipe my exact itinerary. BOOK YOUR JUNGLE SAFARI HERE!

What You’ll See On Safari in Chitwan National Park

The park is home to 68 species of mammals. The two most famous residents of the park are easily the Bengal Tiger and the Greater One-horned Rhino. Note that the rhinos and tigers are found in two different areas of the park.

You’ll likely see various hooved animals, including sambar, hog deer, barking deer, spotted deer, and wild boar.

The park is also home to 55 species of amphibians and reptiles. Gharial crocodiles were the stars for me, and they swam beside my canoe as we glided through the Rapti River.

Chitwan National Park is also home to nearly 600 species of birds, many of which you will see on your safari.

If you choose to take a walking safari, which is included on my recommended Chitwan tour , you will also see untamed plant life, creeping vines, and towering trees up close.

Where Is Chitwan National Park

Chitwan National Park is located in the southern part of central Nepal, close to the border of India.

Kathmandu to Chitwan Distance

Chitwan National Park is over 105 miles away from Kathmandu , Nepal’s capital city. It will take nearly five hours to drive to Chitwan via rental car, but can take longer through other transportation modes.

More on those below.

The driving path for a Chitwan jungle safari.

Ways to get there

You have a few options when deciding how to travel to Chitwan National Park.

Take a tour.

The easiest (and arguably best) way to get to Chitwan national Park is on a tour.

The park has regulations that prohibit visitors from walking the park without a guide anyway, so in my opinion it is easiest to book a tour before arriving.

You can either book a larger tour of Nepal that includes a stop in Chitwan, lodging, transpiration nd more, or you can book a tour of Chitwan only, including transportation and lodging.

Let’s break down each option.

⫸  10-Day Adventure Sports Tour in Nepal

I one-thousand percent recommend this  10-day adventure sports tour  for anyone who wants to incorporate their Chitwan jungle safari with excursions in Pokhara and Kathmandu, too. loves nature, culture, and an adrenaline rush!

I can  personally vouch  for every activity on this tour!

It is the exact route I followed and hits all the stops you have seen me post about on this site. The only difference between this tour and mine is that I added on an ultralight flight, too.

  • On this tour, you’ll experience a jungle safari to see rhinos and elephants in Chitwan National Park .
  • You’ll ride a dugout canoe and see gharial crocodiles.
  • Adventurers, you’ll get to go bungee jumping and paragliding in Pokhara and ride the steepest zipline in the world.
  • And, you’ll see cultural sites in Pokhara and Kathmandu.

I could not recommend this experience more!

⫸  3-Day Chitwan National Park Safari from Kathmandu

If you just need a tour to and from Chitwan, minus the rest of Nepal, then I recommend  this 3-day Chitwan tour .

It originates in Kathmandu, and all transportation is provided via Tourist Bus to and from Chitwan. (Be forewarned, the bus ride is long! 7 or 8 hours, depending on traffic and road conditions.)

It also includes all meals and accommodations in Chitwan, near the park, as well as entrance fees and activities within the national park.

You’ll get up close and personal with gharial crocodiles, and enjoy a guided Jeep tour. Lastly, tackle short jungle hikes as well as a cultural show from the Tharu tribe.

Chitwan was one of the highlights of my entire trip, and this tour won’t disappoint. Seeing the one-horned rhinos and gharial crocodiles was incredible, and the lush green jungle was so lush and beautiful.

The colorful flora in Chitwan National Park.

Ride the Tourist Bus.

Every morning, multiple tourist buses leave from Kathmandu to Sauraha, which is near one of the park’s 12 entrances.

When booking the tourist bus, know in advance that the road is difficult for the bus to drive. There are large unpaved sections and that will nearly double the transportation time.

It can take around eight hours, give or take, to reach the park by bus, depending upon traffic, road construction, and weather.

Book a Rental Car.

From Kathmandu , Chitwan National Park is reachable in under five hours by car.

From Pokhara and Lumbini, Chitwan National Park is a roughly four to five hours drive.

Pro Tip: I always get the best rental car prices here. If you are considering booking your own car to self drive, BOOK YOUR RENTAL CAR HERE!

The park is easily accessible from most of the larger cities of Nepal. Be aware that some sections of the road are unpaved, though they are passable by car if you take it slow.

What To Pack for a Chitwan Jungle Safari

The key to comfort on a Chitwan jungle safari is layers. While I do have a complete Nepal packing list available, I want to talk a bit more specifically about what to pack for your safari in Chitwan.

Here is everything you need for your trip.

chitwan safari travel

Comfortable earth-tone pants

These thick comfy leggings are a great option! Choose them in dark green, brown, or grey tones to blend in to your surroundings. Get yours here!

chitwan safari travel

Rugged trekking sandals

These trekking sandals have crossed six continents with me and are still going strong! They are super sturdy and perfect for a walking safari. Get yours here!

chitwan safari travel

A loose light t-shirt

Grab a few basic tees in earth-toned colors. They are excellent for keeping the sun off of your shoulders on long days in the jungle. Get yours here!

chitwan safari travel

A moisture wicking tank top

Prefer to go sleeveless? This moisture wicking tank will let your body breathe and help to regulate your temp even in hot weather. Get yours here!

chitwan safari travel

Your favorite wide brim hat

This wide brim hat is the exact one I am wearing in the photos on this page. It is crushable and packable and protects you from the bight sun. Can’t recommend it enough! Get yours here.

chitwan safari travel

A scarf or shawl

Be sure to pack a lightweight scarf in case you need extra sun coverage. I used one to cover my shoulders while on the walking portion of the safari one day, and I was glad to have it. Get yours here!

chitwan safari travel

Hiking boots

If you prefer boots or shoes over sandals, these are the ones I recommend. They are lightweight and waterproof, which means they can even survive the Rapti River. Get yours here!

chitwan safari travel

A Foldable Day Pack

Bring a tiny, foldable day pack for your safari in Chitwan. It is perfect for stashing your photo gear an water bottle, as well as other extras you may bring. Get yours here!

chitwan safari travel

A reusable water bottle

I am obsessed with this Hydroflask bottle and couldn’t recommend it more! It keeps cold drinks icy cold and hot drinks steaming hot. In Chitwan, you’ll be thankful for those icy sips on hot days. Get yours here!

chitwan safari travel

The sun shines strong in Nepal, especially in spring and summer. Don’t forget your sunglasses . I love these ones because they are lightweight and more comfortable on the nose than the glasses with rubber pads. Get yours here.

chitwan safari travel

You do not want to go on a Chitwan jungle safari without sunscreen ! I saw plenty of red, sun-burned people and – better to not be one of them. Choose this eco-friendly option if you can. Get yours here!

What not to pack for a Chitwan jungle safari

When planning for your safari in Chitwan National Park, you will want to be very mindful about what colors you pack.

Earth-tones and muted colors that blend with the natural environment are best.

Bright unnatural colors, like vibrant reds, oranges, and yellows, should be avoided. This is because the bright colors can scare or startle the animals, and they may be more likely to stay hidden if you’re wearing them.

Your guide will likely warn you the day before about color considerations for your tour. Unfortunately, there are always people who ignore that advice.

Don’t be that person!

Where To Stay Near Chitwan National Park

If you choose to self drive or travel to Chitwan without a tour, you are gonna need a place to stay. While it is not possible to stay inside the park, there are a number of options in the small towns nearby.

I stayed at the Parkland Hotel in Chitwan and I highly recommend it! If I return, I would absolutely book a stay here again.

The grounds are lush and green. There is a swimming pool on site, which is amazing in the hotter months. The staff is all super friendly and helpful. And, the rooms are comfortable.

They serve buffet-style meals, which accommodate both meat eaters, vegetarians, and a number of other dietary needs. My only criticism is that they could have served dal bhat and other Nepali staples, but hey – I ate well so no compaints!

FAQs on Chitwan National Park

Still have questions about taking a safari in Chitwan National Park? Let’s tackle those below.

How many days do you need in Chitwan National Park?

I recommend a minimum of three days in Chitwan (3d/2N) so that you get to take a safari drive, a Rapti River canoe ride, and a walking safari. With more than three days, you could even consider longer visits to the elephant breeding center, gharial breeding center, and more.

Basically, the longer you stay in Chitwan, the more wildlife you will get to see.

A Little Adventure… Exploring Nepal’s Wild Outdoors at Chitwan National Park

Last updated on May 8, 2024 by Shannon

When I first booked my trip to spend three days at the UNESCO World Heritage Site of  Royal Chitwan National Park , I had visions of trekking through the jungles to spy on tigers and dodge wild rhinos.

Turns out, the adventuring at Chitwan doesn’t go quite that far.

early morning canoe ride on the rapti river at Chitwan National Park

I did see one of the rare one-horned rhinos, and I learned that it wasn’t the tigers and snakes to fear, but rather the park’s wild elephants. Tamed elephants appear docile at times, but our guide informed us that a wild elephant might charge you and attempt to rip your limbs apart by a particularly gruesome process of stepping on you with one giant foot, and then grabbing an arm with its trunk to then wrench your body apart.

And I learned this in my first minutes in the park!

Travel Chitwan With Friends

visiting Chitwan National Park with friends

Our guide had such a way with words when he delivered his welcome speech to our group, as we sipped chai tea in the dining room and learned the outline of our three day tour.

My time these past weeks traveling in Nepal were wonderful, and that includes meeting the other volunteers in the nearby communities. Our group, which included medical volunteers at the local clinics and hospitals, decided to book an eco-friendly tour to Chitwan together.

By traveling in a pack, we solidified our friendship, but we were also able to negotiate a steep discount on the transit and guide required to visit and explore. Tourism is big business in all of Nepal , and Chitwan is no exception.

taking a jeep safari around chitwan with friends

We arranged a full tour, including bus transport from Kathmandu to Sauraha, free pickup from the bus station outside of Sauraha, and transport all the way to our resort. It was handy, although it’s a cinch to do independently as well (details at the end).

As I’ve mentioned, there were four teaching volunteers at our monasteries near Pharping , including me and my cousin. Then we met the doctor volunteers from Chapagaon when our mutual volunteer placement company (and what a debacle it proved to be!) brought the doctors into Pharping to see the monasteries and prayer rituals.

The seven of us trooped south to Chitwan for a weekend of elephants, jungle walks, a canoe trip, and tours through the small indigenous villages of Southern Nepal.

Chitwan’s Wildlife & Conservation Successes

canoe ride at chitwan national park

Like visiting any national park, there is great potential for wildlife sightings, but no guarantees. And in the region, Chitwan is actually the best place and chance of spotting any of the most rare and interesting animals. But animals don’t much love tourists, so it takes an act of god to see one of the endangered bengal tigers living in the park.

I have a small obsession dating back to childhood with tigers, and I would love to see this majestic animal in the wild. But even more than that, I would love to see it thrive and population numbers rebound, so I wasn’t going to bemoan the animal’s survival instinct, which keeps it far from tourist paths.

That said, it’s possible—rare but possible—to sight them on the daylong jeep safaris. And some travelers report more chances for a tiger spotting at Bardia National Park, instead. But also, tiger sightings can  occur, and at increasing frequency in Nepal now that numbers are rebounding, so I was cautious about seeing them, too since I was on a walking safari!

But even without the tiger spotting, the other animals are beautiful and it’s a region of Nepal offering unique activities quite unlike sightseeing in Kathmandu or the Valley, and entirely unlike the Pokhara area, too.

Nepal is leading the region in conservation and in the last decade—strong anti-poaching measures have seen the tiger population swell to more than 120, and the endangered one-horned rhino numbers well over 600 across the entire country.

Add to that unique flora and fauna, beautiful birds, a smattering of leopards and sloth bears, and a resident population of elephants, and it’s a no-brainer to visit on any trip to Nepal. It’s hands-down the best safari experience outside of of driving around the Serengeti .

Don’t forget to  book travel insurance for your trip —a great policy provides coverage in case of medical emergencies, lost or stolen gear, adventure sports riders, and more. I’ve used  IMG Global  for more than a decade  highly recommend it !

Where to Stay Near Chitwan

our boat of people for our walking safari in Chitwan National Park

We had organized everything ahead of time, and as such we stayed at  Eden Jungle Resort and Lodge  in Sauraha, which home to all of the budget and backpacker lodging.

It would have been lovely to stay at one of the more remote luxury lodges since they have deeper access to the national park and far less commercial development.

With a bit of budget, I would have hands-down stayed at Landmark Forest Park Hotel, which is just outside of the backpacker area, or with even a bit more cash you can make a completely responsible trip to Chitwan by staying at Tiger Tops Elephant Camp or Sapana Village Lodge . I would have also opted for a jeep safari instead of the walking safari—that’s my advice for booking your own Chitwan tours.

But for a backpacker budget,   Eden Jungle Resort and Lodge   was perfect as a spot that covered food, board, and a guide. The lovely staff fed us delicious food and the resort organized the entire weekend flawlessly.

Our group had a personal guide who showed up each morning during breakfast and then traveled with us through the National Park and among the different activities. We had booked three days of sightseeing, with travel days on either side to and from Nepal. You really need at least two days to truly enjoy the nature and beauty and culture.

Exploring the Local Culture

Tharu mud huts located in Chitwan National Parks

Our arrival day in Chitwan, that afternoon we needed a low-key activity and our guide rounded us up and took us on a walk through a Tharu village. The Tharu people are an ethnic group in south-western Nepal who are native to the Terai region , which is a plain region that encompasses Chitwan, as well as other areas.

Once the Park received UNESCO status and government protection and conservation, the villagers formed settlements along the border. Across decades now, the Tharu have maintained these villages and live in a remarkably similar traditional manner to their previous generations—a feat for any culture with the number of tourists that visit the park.

chitwan trees

Many cultural anthropologist attribute the strong ties to tradition culture to the fact that Tharu never followed the larger trends in Nepal to seek work overseas. Tharu stay within their communities, rarely even venturing into other Nepali communities. Through these isolationist tendencies, they have a strong tie to the land and the customs of the ancestors.

The houses of the Tharu people seemingly emerge from the ground like the stalk of a strong and abundant plat. The homes have clay walls and thatched roofs, both features that allow the homes to stay cool in the dense summer humidity.

Wildlife Safari in the National Park

local kids fishing in the waters of the rapti river near chitwan

We started out our first morning in Chitwan with a canoe ride and jungle walk. One of the women with us, Jess, was particularly freaked out by the prospect of a jungle walk after our guide’s pep-talk about the danger of wild elephants and rhinos, but she decided to stick out her fear and join the activities anyway.

To skip the jungle walk, she would have missed the leisurely early morning canoe ride down the Rapti River, which was truly beautiful. We all boarded a wooden dugout canoe and floated along the riverbank, peering into the jungle. Then we disembarked and walked back toward town through the jungle, looking for wild animals.

boy fishing in the early morning

Over the years, I go back and forth about bird-watching safaris. If there aren’t many birds, then my eagerness for bird spotting wears thin. On the canoe trip, there is an element of bird-watching, but it’s in such a serene and peaceful setting that it’s always engaging. Since you leave in the early morning, many animals are active and villagers are on the river, too.

And as you look into the forest, there are opportunities to spot wild elephants and rhinos. During our ride, we spotted a number of beautiful species of kingfisher birds coasting across the water, egrets waded through the shallows.

Our guide to the Chitwan National Park showing us through the forest

We also passed by groups of local children clowning around in the river, they were entirely unconcerned with our canoe full of tourists.

Our jungle walk was peaceful and uneventful. We spotted on rhino resting among the trees. The guides do make a dramatic adventure, however.

Our guide swears he truly did hear things in the jungle. It was hard to determine. But he picked up a big stick for protection and indicated that the seven of us should tighten our single-file line on the narrow paths.

Either way, our guide made us acutely aware that we were in the jungle, a place a bit more dangerous strolling through New York’s Central Park.

Although we didn’t spot the big game animals on the walk, we did spot fresh footprints from a leopard, several deer, and a few other animals that could probably have killed me if they ever happened upon the seven of us gently tiptoeing through the jungle.

This is the only booking platform I use because it rewards you for loyalty, and I regularly score free breakfasts and 15% off my hotel.

Bathing the Elephants

bath time with elephant's from Chitwan's Elephant Breeding Center

Among the highlights at Chitwan National Park is the chance to play with the elephants. After our jungle walk, we stopped near a cafe for drinks and a sunset on the river.

Nearby, a group of elephants took their daily baths in the river, and tourists are allowed to join the mahouts, the elephant trainer. The mahout would command the elephant to tip us at various points, and to generally play around a bit in the water.

After the frolicking session, we then moved into the shallow water to rub our elephant, ours was named Lakshmi. They have thick, coarse skin filled with wiry hair, and the elephants enjoy being cleaned.

chitwan breeding center elephants come home with food

It was a fun to interact with the elephants on this level, without some of the whiffs of exploitation that come with riding elephants in parts of Southeast Asia. Interacting with the elephants at all is a sticky subject and one that has few hard and fast lines.

Although as a rule elephants should never be ridden or used for tourist purposes, in Nepal, the National Park’s conservation efforts hinge on tourism. This tourism draw in the name of conservation isn’t present during the canned tourist experiences in Thailand .

It’s complicated, but I discuss the elephant issue here , as well as the National Park’s Elephant Breeding Center that you’ll visit on many tours of the area.

Chitwan breeding center elephants

Suffice to say, I write about sustainable and responsible tourism , and in my estimation there is a case to be made that elephants at Chitwan serve a needed larger conservation goal for critically endangered animals living in the park.

I understand those who draw a hard line that you can never ethically blend elephants with tourism, but I simply came to a different conclusion and I don’t see the issue as black and white.

And that said, when I visited in 2009, there was not even a whiff of ethical conversations happening in Nepal around saving elephants from tourism and exploitation. In 2023, that is no longer the case.

breeding center at Chitwan should you visit

Although there are few options for supporting more ethical elephant tourism at Chitwan, there is some basic groundwork now. Plan on a walking or jeep safari of the National Park, and then bike out to Stand Up for Elephants so you can support a tourism industry that offers elephants a life that doesn’t involve injury and schlepping tourists around on their backs.

You can also book time at Tiger Tops Elephant Camp or Sapana Village Lodge and walk with their elephants.

A Glimpse of Tharu Culture

Having toured the villages the day before, on our second day at the National Park our guide arranged for us to watch a traditional Tharu dance performed by a large group of the middle and high-school children from the community.

The dancers were all male, and the Tharu young’uns spent thirty minutes shaking every limb of their bodies while dancing to beating the rhythm on their clacking sticks.

Sunset over the Rapti River Chitwan National Park

Although I was an Irish dancer for years, I recognize that I could not sustain that level of movement and dance. The dancers had skill and charisma that kept us captivated throughout the performance.

By the end of the second day, we had spotted leopard tracks, bathed elephants, spent hours peacefully spotting animals from the river, and even sipped beers as the sun set. It was a lovely way to spend the day.

The next day we would set out early to visit the Elephant Breeding Center , which plays a large role in supporting the funding and tourism industry that keeps Chitwan National Park afloat.

Should You Visit Chitwan National Park?

one-horned rhinoceros live in the national park and Nepal is one of their last habitats left in the world.

Tourism is the main industry supporting the park’s conservation; it’s quite literally the way that Nepal funds the rangers who protect the park from poachers. In that way, tourism is the best way to keep the conservation happening.

That said, the two- or three-day packaged tours sold from Kathmandu are canned tourist experiences. You will run through a set of activities everyone does, from a jungle walk, an elephant experience, a cultural show, etc.

Do I think you should do it? Really depends on what you are looking for in the experience. It’s well organized and tourism is big business, so you’ll do the things they promised. Because tourism is big business, the likelihood that you will see tigers (which roam at night and shy from touristy areas of the park) is very, very low.

You have a great chance of seeing the rhino, and you will learn about an indigenous culture, the Tharu, who are only located in this region of Nepal. You also can easily do add this stop into a route around the country that includes the park, ie. Kathmandu > Chitwan > Pokhara.

Think about your own expectations and what you want out of your travels. You will not be remotely hiking through a wild jungle, you will be learning about conservation and the park’s breeding programs, with fun activities thrown in there, too. If you are looking for wild and remote, save those expectations for your trek of the Annapurna circuit.

How to Visit Chitwan National Park

where to stay in chitwan for every budget

What to Pack

You are visiting a very wet, humid, and forested area. Pack clothes for hot, sunny days during the daytime, and lightweight clothes that cover your limbs in the evenings to prevent mosquito bites.

To that end, you should absolutely pack  strong DEET repellant  and quality sunscreen . A full travel packing list is here . And don’t forget your  Nepal travel adapter  so you can charge all of your electronics.

Travel Insurance

Chitwan is in a remote area of Nepal, you need  travel insurance that will cover you if you need immediate transport from the National Park back to Kathmandu for medical treatment—this is important since there’s a lot that can go wrong in the jungle.

visit Chitwan National Park sign

Where to Stay

Responsible : The  Tiger Tops Elephant Camp  is a private elephant camp leading the way with the most humane and ethical elephant practices in Chitwan.

Budget : I also recommend  Eden Jungle Resort and Lodge ; it was lovely and remains highly rated by other travelers in the years since my visit.

Mid-range : If you’re feeling more spendy, then  Landmark Forest Park Hotel  is a great choice.

How to Get to Chitwan

Sauraha is the town outside of Chitwan and it is from here that the vast majority of tours are run. This is where the guesthouses and resorts are too. Nicer resorts are on the outskirts of Sauraha, but all of the budget and backpacker accommodation is in this town.

To get to Sauraha, buses run directly from Kathmandu and Pokhara and each take between 4-6 hours in general. Buses are prompt, so arrive with time to spare in the morning or you will miss the bus out of Thamel.

Tours also pack tourists on other shuttles and they also leave in the morning.

There’s an airport just 10 km outside of Sauraha in Bharatpur and it’s ideal if you are feeling spendy—flights run daily from Bharatpur to both Kathmandu and Pokhara, though less frequently in low season.

The Wiki Travel page for Chitwan is a good resource for updated and additional information.

Books About Nepal

Use the  Nepal Lonely Planet to organize your wanders. Although I used the Lonely Planet, the newest version of the LP is seriously useless!

If you’re keen on cultural reading, I’ve read a ton of books about Nepal and from local authors. Arresting God in Kathmandu  is a beautifully written account by a Nepali author, while The Violet Shyness of Their Eyes: Notes from Nepal is a more traditional travel narrative that is also well done and is a classic recommendation—you can’t go wrong with reading either before or during your trip to Nepal.

Best 3 Days Tour In Nepal: Chitwan Jungle Safari Tour Review

I did a canoe trip and jungle safari in Chitwan with Kishor, the owner, and his guide. Thanks a lot for the passion and love for his work. I was able to see rhinos, tigers, and many other animals. I highly recommend this agency as they not only organize a standard tour like the others, but they try to make your stay in Chitwan and Nepal the best possible by pleasantly helping you.

I have spent many months planning a family vacation. Mr. Kishor spent many hours helping me plan and was very helpful in understanding what I wanted. We spent a full day in the jeep with a guide and driver and got to see more animals than any other group. Kishor is cautious with the environment and animals and has a great deal of knowledge. We had a great day, and the river's picnic was well prepared and added to our experience.

Do not waste your money and time searching for another travel agency. Just email Kishor at Nepal Tour and Trekking Service P. Ltd to plan a custom tour.

These treks are suitable for any walker looking for something a little more challenging and energetic. They are a combination of some longer and shorter walks and hill-walking experience is desirable. The duration is usually from 10 to 15 days. Following the up and down terrain of Nepal and walking to higher elevations contrasts these treks to those in the easy classification. However, you will be rewarded for your efforts with spectacular close-up views of glaciers and of the high Himalayas. Although the terrain is not difficult, some vigorous hiking experience is useful. There may be up to 6 hours a day on the trail and the elevation rises and falls from 800m/ 2624ft to 4000m/13210ft above sea level.

Chitwan Jungle Safari Tour Package: Explore Nepal’s Wildlife

The Chitwan Jungle Safari Tour is a renowned and compact wildlife adventure that unfolds over 2 nights and 3 days in the heart of Nepal. Nestled within this remarkable country, Chitwan National Park boasts the prestigious status of a UNESCO World Heritage site and a Ramsar site due to its immense ecological importance, highlighted by the Beeshazari Tal wetlands that grace the park. Over the past three decades, Chitwan National Park has accrued invaluable experience in managing the delicate balance between the park and the local communities, fostering coexistence and conservation.

Located in Nepal’s subtropical region, the Chitwan Jungle Safari tour unveils a stunning tapestry of natural diversity. The park is a sanctuary for 68 mammal species, 544 bird species, 56 herpetofauna species, and 126 fish species. It stands as a protector of critically endangered animals like the One-Horned Rhinoceros, the Royal Bengal Tiger, and the Gharial Crocodile.

Wildlife Encounters and Thrilling Experiences

The Chitwan Jungle Safari tour package encompasses exhilarating elephant rides and jungle safaris, offering visitors the opportunity to witness wildlife in their unspoiled natural habitats, all while ensuring safety and sustainability. Moreover, the area is teeming with various deer species, langur monkeys, and wild boars, providing ample opportunities for wildlife enthusiasts to observe and photograph these magnificent creatures.

As a pivotal part of our Chitwan National Park tour, we’ve arranged a captivating canoe ride along the serene waters of the Rapti River. This extraordinary experience allows participants to marvel at one of the world’s largest populations of Gharial crocodiles, gracefully sunning themselves on the riverbanks. Historically, the crocodile’s distinctive snout was believed to possess aphrodisiac properties, a notion stemming from its formidable prowess in fish hunting.

Best Time to Visit Chitwan: A Season for Every Explorer

Chitwan National Park offers a spectrum of distinct and exceptional experiences in every season. Autumn, extending from October to February, presents travelers with pleasant weather, with average temperatures hovering around 25 degrees Celsius. As March approaches, temperatures gradually rise, often reaching up to 43 degrees Celsius, signaling the advent of hot and humid weather. The transition to the monsoon season occurs from late June through September, during which time the rivers swell and the roads become challenging to navigate.

In January, local villagers are granted permission to harvest thatch grass for their needs, a unique opportunity for visitors to observe wildlife up close. The months of September, November, February, and April witness the convergence of a diverse array of migratory birds, mingling with the resident avian population, creating spectacular bird-watching opportunities.

During the monsoon season, the park becomes a lush oasis due to generous rainfall, while most trees burst into bloom during the winter season. The Palash tree, and silkcotton tree, known as the “flame of the forest,” bedeck themselves with stunning red flowers. Our solo or small group tours to Chitwan, spanning 2 nights and 3 days, can be seamlessly integrated into your pre- or post-trekking adventures in Nepal’s Annapurna  or Everest regions.

We enjoyed the Chitwan package very much. Despite the fact that the logistics were seamless, the activities were excellent, and the guide was very kind, helpful, and very knowledgeable about the area. Taking an elephant ride was one of our favorite activities because we saw several rhinos, including two sets of mom and baby rhinos, as well as deer and a crocodile. During the dugout canoe ride, we saw many birds, some crocodiles, and even a gharial along the way! There was a good explanation of the Tharu village and the riverside walk. In addition, the Tharu cultural dance program was performed with skill and aplomb. The hotel was clean, peaceful, and had a refreshing pool and riverside view where rhinoceroses and buffaloes could be seen swimming in the water. The food was delicious and there was a wide selection to choose from. The schedule was full enough to get our money’s worth but also relaxed enough to enjoy the pool and view of the river between activities.

What are the Bus Classes & Prices of Chitwan Safari Travel?

The price of your bus trip will depend both on the destination and the class of your ticket. Note that not all ticket classes are available on certain routes yet for longer trips there is almost always a good choice of options. Opt for a sleeper coach for the most convenient overnight trip. Sleeper buses are usually equipped with berths or soft reclining seats, feature an onboard toilet and your ticket may also include other perks like snacks or even a lunch. Taking a night bus is also a good idea if you want to save on your hotel room. During the day an express service is often the best value for money as it makes less stops than an ordinary or standard class bus and travels faster. On some routes it may be crucial to choose the right class as, say, an ordinary or second class bus may need some 6 hours to cover the distance the first class or express bus travels in two hours!

Pros & Cons of Bus Travel

Pros of bus travel.

Buses usually boast the widest network of destinations covered. They travel to the places you cannot get to by plane or even by train

Travelling by bus is easy – there is no need to arrive to the bus terminal much in advance, and the check-in is usually a very fast formality opposite to air travel

Bus tickets are very affordable. Yes, there are costly first class or VIP options but is you are on a budget, bus is the first means of transportation you have to think about

At the same time, there are different classes of service to suit any budget. If you are after a higher level of comfort, buses get you covered, too.

Cons of Bus Travel

Intercity bus terminals can be located outside the city centre in the outskirts. It means you will need to calculate extra time and money to get there. In certain destinations getting from the bus terminal can cost you more than you would expect because only a limited number of transportation companies is allowed to serve the route – and prices may be inflated.

During busy weekends or high season buses serving some tourist destinations may run out of schedule and require advanced booking.

While buses are not as weather dependent as ferries, bus trips can also be delayed or cancelled due to bad weather or road conditions – keep it in mind if travelling during certain seasons or to certain destinations.
