  • Trivia Bruce Horak , the actor who plays Hemmer, is legally blind, just like his character's species, the Aenar, who are also blind.
  • Goofs There are some rank insignia mistakes. Number One is introduced as "Lieutenant Commander Una Chin-Riley" yet she is wearing the rank insignia of a full commander: two full stripes. A Lieutenant Commander's rank insignia is a full stripe under a thin stripe (in TOS it is a full stripe and a staggered stripe). It is not uncommon for a ship's first officer to be a Lt. Commander if they have not been in the position long. Spock at this point is a Lieutenant but he is wearing Lieutenant Commander's stripes; a Lieutenant just has one stripe. La'an is the ship's chief of security and the ship's second officer. She is also wearing Lt. Commander stripes but is addressed as a Lieutenant, but it would make more sense for her to be a Lieutenant Commander. Either way both of their rank insignia are not matching the rank they are addressed by. Ortegas is addressed as a Lieutenant but is wearing Lieutenant Commander's strips. A Lieutenant Commander may be addressed as a Commander or Lieutenant Commander but never as just a Lieutenant, so either her rank insignia or the manner she is addressed by the rest of the crew is in error.

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' Season 2 is a classic sci-fi adventure

As the second season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds debuts today on Paramount+, one question stands above all others:

Can they do it again?

Because in the show's first season last year, Strange New Worlds helped prove to producers of Paramount+'s new-school Trek series something they should have known from the start — when you're telling stories from a nearly 60-year-old franchise, it makes more sense to embrace that legacy than to shy away from it.

'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds' goes there, boldly

Pop Culture Happy Hour

'star trek: strange new worlds' goes there, boldly.

Fortunately, once the second season gets rolling – the first two episodes aren't quite as impressive as the next four – it's obvious the minds behind Strange New Worlds have gotten the memo. Fans get a wide range of compelling new stories, often in an adventure-of-the-week format, with lots of eye-popping special effects and cool nods to the history of these beloved characters.

New stories with classic characters

For those who aren't Trekkers, Strange New Worlds is set at a time years before James T. Kirk will take over as the Enterprise's captain – allowing the show to retell the origin stories of key figures like Spock, Nyota Uhura and Christine Chapel.

star trek strange new worlds vulture

Leonard Nimoy as Commander Spock and Majel Barrett as Number One in the original Star Trek pilot. Later, Barrett played Nurse Christine Chapel. CBS via Getty Images hide caption

A few of these characters were actually created for Star Trek 's original pilot in the mid-1960s , which NBC forced creator Gene Roddenberry to significantly rewrite, recast and reshoot. (instead, Roddenberry used the pilot footage to fuel a two-episode Trek story from the first season called "The Menagerie," featuring people who would later be reimagined in Strange New Worlds , like Capt. Christopher Pike and his Number One, now called Una Chin-Riley.)

One moment in Strange New Worlds ' new season, for example, explains that Spock learned to play the Vulcan harp — seen occasionally in the original series — after the ship's doctor recommended playing music to help the half-human, half-Vulcan character better control his emotions.

And there's a cheeky scene where Spock, in temporary command of the Enterprise, needs to come up with a cool catchphrase/command for signaling the crew to accelerate into warp speed. But the words he lands on – "I would like the ship to go. Now." – don't exactly measure up to canonical phrases like "engage" and "make it so."

Second season has a slow start

As fun as much of this storytelling can be, there is the matter of the season's first two episodes, hamstrung by a didactic storyline that wraps up the matter of Una Chin-Riley's arrest by Starfleet.

star trek strange new worlds vulture

Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley Michael Gibson/Paramount hide caption

Rebecca Romijn as Una Chin-Riley

Chin-Riley, played with steely precision by Rebecca Romijn, was nabbed at the end of last season because Starfleet learned she had been hiding her heritage as an Illyrian – a species which often genetically augments itself, which is an illegal act in the United Federation of Planets.

As her trial progresses, the series offers up a way too on-the-nose allegory to real-life issues like the U.S. military's former "Don't Ask, Don't Tell" anti-LGBTQ policy. Chin-Riley turns down a deal to plead guilty in exchange for a reduced punishment, saying, "I shouldn't have to hide anymore. None of us should. I know I should have done better. I didn't stand up when I should have. I'm standing up now."

Strange New Worlds , like many Trek series, often wears its causes on its sleeve. But even for a TV show whose cast regularly looks like a Benetton ad, this felt a little ham-handed and obvious (though the actress who plays Chin-Riley's Illyrian attorney, Yetide Badaki, drops a powerful performance that is easily the best reason to watch the episode.)

'Star Trek: Discovery' Is A Refreshing Triumph

'Star Trek: Discovery' Is A Refreshing Triumph

'Star Trek: Picard' soars by embracing the legacy of 'The Next Generation'

'Star Trek: Picard' soars by embracing the legacy of 'The Next Generation'

There are a few other irritating tropes on Strange New Worlds which are common for most Trek projects, like the crewmembers who ignore orders they disagree with, and the leadership's illogical habit of sending the most senior officers on the most dangerous missions. Also, as much as I love Taxi alum Carol Kane, her addition as a screechy-voiced engineering expert with a surprising past veers dangerously — and quickly — from amusing to ridiculous.

But by the time we get to the episodes where Spock is turned into a human (yes, really), live-action versions of characters from the animated series Lower Decks appear and two characters travel back in time, it's obvious: Strange New Worlds is packed with the kind of grand, episodic science fiction adventure that was once the bedrock of great TV.

And its glorious return is most welcome.

Correction June 15, 2023

In a previous version of this story, an incorrectly punctuated sentence implied Nyota and Uhura are two different characters. Nyota Uhura is one character.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds and Star Trek: Lower Decks

“ Star Trek : Strange New Worlds,” currently in production on its third season, has been renewed by Paramount+ for Season 4. Meanwhile, “ Star Trek: Lower Decks ,” the first animated “Star Trek” comedy, will conclude its run on the streamer with its fifth season, which will debut in the fall.

Popular on Variety

“Lower Decks” charted brand new territory for “Star Trek” when it debuted in 2020, as both an animated comedy and a series that focused on the junior officers of the USS Cerritos: Beckett Mariner (Tawny Newsome), Brad Boimler (Jack Quaid), D’Vana Tendi (Noël Wells) and Sam Rutherford (Eugene Cordero). Set in the years following the feature film “Star Trek: Nemesis,” the series has included voice cameos from many beloved “Star Trek” alumni, like George Takei, Jonathan Frakes, Marina Sirtis, John de Lancie, Will Wheaton, Armin Shimerman, Nana Visitor and Robert Duncan McNeill.

Given its premise, concluding “Lower Decks” make sense considering the main four characters all received promotions in Season 4. But in a message to fans, Kurtzman and executive producer and showrunner Mike McMahan left the turbolift doors open for continuing the characters’ stories following their time at the bottom of the Starfleet pecking order.

The “Star Trek” TV universe, overseen by Kurtzman through his Secret Hideout production company and produced by CBS Studios, has enjoyed a robust expansion since “Star Trek: Discovery” first premiered in 2017. Along with “Strange New Worlds,” the made-for-television movie “Star Trek: Section 31” recently concluded production with star Michelle Yeoh, and the new series “Star Trek: Starfleet Academy” will begin shooting later this year.

“It has been incredibly rewarding to continue to build the Star Trek universe, and we’re so grateful to Secret Hideout and our immensely talented casts and producers,” said Jeff Grossman, executive vice president of Programming at Paramount+. “‘Strange New Worlds’ has found the perfect blend of action, adventure and humor. Similarly, ‘Star Trek: Lower Decks’ has brought the laughs with an ample amount of heart to the franchise across its four seasons. We can’t wait for audiences to see what is in store for the crew of the U.S.S. Cerritos in this final season.”

“‘Lower Decks’ and ‘Strange New Worlds’ are integral to the ‘Star Trek’ franchise, expanding the boundaries of the universe and exploring new and exciting worlds,” said CBS Studios president David Stapf. “We are extraordinarily proud of both series as they honor the legacy of what Gene Roddenberry created almost 60 years ago. We are so grateful to work with Secret Hideout, Alex Kurtzman, Mike McMahan, Akiva Goldsman, Henry Alonso Myers and the cast, crews and artists who craft these important and entertaining stories for fans around the world.”

Who Will Succeed Succession as Emmys Darling?

Succession

This article originally appeared in  Gold Rush ,  a subscriber-only newsletter about the perpetual Hollywood awards race.  Sign up here .

Welcome back to Gold Rush, and welcome to Emmy season (such as it is)! We’re going to be covering every step of the TV awards race from here through September’s Emmy Awards, helping to make sense of and have fun with an awards apparatus that has always stood in the tall, slender shadow of Oscar, but which has a  lot  more moving parts. You’ll never get bored covering the Emmys, if only because there are one thousand categories, each with something like twelve nominees. The Emmys ballot will rival your tax forms for impenetrable length, though it will hopefully exclude the shows from this year that were more painful than being audited (sorry,  Secret Invasion  and  Frasier ).

One thing that doesn’t take an advanced degree in Hollywood to glean is that Emmy voters tend to pick their darlings (shows, performers) and ride them to the end. As a result, nothing is as predictive to future Emmy success as past Emmy success. Which means that when a TV show that has dominated the Emmy ballot for years ends, the subsequent ceremony presents a significant blank space, and a scramble to fill it.

On the comedy side of things, the end of  Ted Lasso  frees up real estate in the performer categories. Last year’s nominations for Jason Sudeikis, Phil Dunster, Bret Goldstein, Hannah Waddingham, and Juno Temple in lead and supporting roles will be up for grabs. Though the question of which comedy series will take  Ted Lasso ’s place has already been answered:  The Bear . The Drama categories are another story entirely, where last year  Succession  not only won six of the seven televised dramatic awards but was nominated for 14 acting awards among the lead, supporting, and guest categories. Interestingly, among the eight series that vied for Outstanding Drama last year, seven (including  Succession ) aren’t eligible this year, either because they ended ( Better Call Saul ) or didn’t air a new season, due to the strike or otherwise ( Andor ,  House of the Dragon ,  The Last of Us ,  The White Lotus , and  Yellowjackets ). That leaves only one possible repeat nominee from last year, and… we’ll get to it.

Not to tout the brand name here, but we could quite literally see a gold rush to break into those open spots. Here’s who’s most likely to compete:

The No-Brainer:  The Crown

star trek strange new worlds vulture

There’s a way to end this conversation and go home early, and that’s to suggest that the sixth and final season of  The Crown  will get its victory lap, after a year that saw a huge ramp-up in royals drama. In 2021, when  Succession  took a little extra time between seasons 2 and 3,  The Crown  was the show that stepped in, winning Outstanding Drama (a first for the show and for Netflix) and five of the six acting categories. Is there any reason to think that won’t happen again? Well, enthusiasm and critical acclaim were both noticeably down for the final season — our own Jackson McHenry found it  overly decorous and dramatically unsatisfying  as it glided over Diana’s death. And only Elizabeth Debicki (as Diana) has won any kind of major award since the second  Crown  cast’s reign. That said, it would be a surprise if the likes of Debicki, Imelda Staunton, Dominic West, Lesley Manville, and Jonathan Pryce didn’t at least nab nominations.

The Hot New Things:  The Curse  and  Mr. and Mrs. Smith

star trek strange new worlds vulture

To be clear, the Emmys are not the Golden Globes. They don’t just gravitate to the last shiny object dangled in front of them and vote for that. But with so much open space in Drama, some new blood is bound to flow in. Nathan Fielder and Benny Safdie’s  The Curse  may have confounded some audience members and left others disappointed by its ending, but this was a show that wore its ambition on its sleeve, and Emma Stone is basically a lock for a Best Actress nomination. Over at Prime Video,  Mr. and Mrs. Smith  was flashy and sexy, and the Emmys were big fans of Donald Glover’s  Atlanta , so I’d feel comfortable betting on this new show, too.

The Camp:  The Morning Show  and  The Gilded Age

star trek strange new worlds vulture

Sometimes all it takes is for a labor dispute and the end of an awards magnet to open the doors to an era of unprecedented success. Apple’s  The Morning Show  has always been the beneficiary of a curious degree of awards love, given how any assessment of the show tends to lead with how  bonkers  it is. Jennifer Aniston, Reese Witherspoon, and Steve Carell have all been bestowed Emmy nominations for their portrayals of UBA morning TV luminaries. Billy Crudup even  won  in Supporting Actor a few years ago… and honestly he kinda deserved it. In a TV landscape this crowded, star-studded lunacy at least helps a show stand out, especially when the showrunners can make the case that said lunacy is  intentional . And yet the show itself has never been nominated for Outstanding Drama Series. Many are predicting that to change this year, apparently on the logic that if we can send Bradley Jackson to outer space, we can squeeze television’s most bonkers “prestige” show into an eight-program lineup.

Significantly less feted in its first season was HBO’s  The Gilded Age , which was unable to to translate creator Julian Fellows’  Downton Abbey  awards success into an American context. But this year, its combination of sumptuous costumes and sets plus the finest actors Broadway could spare may well place it above a lot of its competition. As with  The Morning Show , it turns out it’s a lot more fun watching theater-trained actors make a meal out of themes of turn-of-the-century social change and the life-or-death stakes of party planning. Do you actually remember the details of international intrigue in  The Diplomat , or can you better recall what Carrie Coon was wearing when she stared Donna Murphy straight in the eye and didn’t blink?

The Genre Fare:  Fallout

star trek strange new worlds vulture

There was a time when Emmy were notorious for turning up their noses at critically acclaimed genre dramas like  Battlestar Galactica  and  Buffy the Vampire Slayer . But after a decade or more of  Game of Thrones ,  The Mandalorian, WandaVision , and  Andor  making themselves at home among the Emmy nominees, that snobbery no longer applies. Which is good news for a show like Netflix’s  Three Body Problem , which cloaks itself in particle physics but is mostly just an alien-invasion story. Or for  Loki , which slumped significantly in its second (and seemingly final) season, but might be able to ride on the fumes of its crackerjack first installment.

The most likely genre series to benefit from this trend, however, seems to be Amazon Prime’s  Fallout . One year after HBO scored a nomination with the high-end video game adaptation  The Last of Us , Prime delivers its own video game adaptation, which feels closer to the steampunk/futuretech aesthetic mishmash of a  Westworld  (appropriate, since Jonathan Nolan is behind this show as well). The reviews have been great, and it’s premiering late enough in the season to get noticed but not so late that it’ll get lost in the crunch of May.

There’s also the matter of  Star Trek: Strange New Worlds , the highly acclaimed series which, if nominated, would be only the fourth instance of a  Star Trek  series getting an Outstanding Drama nod ever, and the first since  Star Trek: The Next Generation  got nominated in 1994.

The Apple of It All:  Slow Horses

star trek strange new worlds vulture

Every Emmy season takes on some kind of factional concern, whether it’s Netflix and HBO battling back and forth for the overall nomination-count supremacy or Hulu setting records for itself as it did two seasons ago. This year, Apple TV+ appears to be trying to take over the Emmy narrative by sheer numerical domination. I’ve already mentioned  The Morning Show . The frankly excellent spy series  Slow Horses  may finally get its due in its third season. It’s not every day that Colin Farrell headlines a TV series, which puts  Sugar  into play. Ditto Juliette Binoche, who’s opposite Ben Mendelsohn as Coco Chanel and Christian Dior, respectively, in  The New Look . Godzilla is, frankly, so hot right now, which would make the well received  Monarch  spinoff series not the craziest option. Even shows like  Criminal Record  and  Hijack , which have thus far struggled to differentiate themselves from the pack of thrillers on streaming, boast the likes of Peter Capaldi and Idris Elba, respectively.

But if you’re thinking that hardly any of these shows previously listed feel like traditional Emmy bait … exactly. The end of  Succession  plus the effects of the strikes have added up to an incredibly odd Emmy season, especially in drama. (Note for Shōgun fans: yours is a limited series and won’t be competing in the drama categories.) The results will be strange… but potentially very exciting. An uneasy mix of lavish period dramas, irony-pilled provocations, post-nuclear sci-fi, spycraft both sexy and sloppy, and shows that are so bad they come back around to being great — this is a far cry from the Cop Show / Lawyer Show / Doctor Show days of the 1990s. Even if it all ends up being a sweep for  The Crown , it’s gonna be a weird ride getting there.

What’s this tv show about.

A science-fiction drama series streaming on the Paramount+ subscription service, the Star Trek: Strange New Worlds TV show is a spin-off of Star Trek: Discovery and a prequel to the original Star Trek TV series. How was this a show

I hope SNW gets renewed for season four and season five. Ending it at season five feels right.

I don’t have Paramont plus. Nor do I intend on getting it anytime soon bring him back to just Paramont the regular cable and I’ll watch.

Scotty Will Return in Season 3 of 'Star Trek: Strange New Worlds'

Martin Quinn's version of the character first appeared in season 2's finale.

The Big Picture

  • Martin Quinn to bring authentic Scottish flair as Montgomery Scott on Star Trek: Strange New Worlds.
  • Quinn adds a new perspective to the character previously played by actors from Canada and England.
  • Star Trek: Strange New Worlds continues to explore the adventures of the USS Enterprise under Captain Pike.

A classic member of the Enterprise crew will return for the third season of Star Trek: Strange New Worlds . After debuting in the final episode of the show's second season , Martin Quinn will stay on board as Montgomery "Scotty" Scott in the upcoming season of Paramount+'s newest Star Trek series. As reported by BBC Scotland in an interview with Quinn, the character will recur on Strange New World 's third season, which is currently filming in Toronto, Ontario.

Quinn is the first-ever Scot to play the character, who was previously played by a Canadian ( James Doohan ) and an Englishman ( Simon Pegg ), and the interview notes that he's adding authenticity to the character, making sure that the show's writers use authentic Scottish slang: "They let me put in the word 'baw-heid' instead of 'turnip-heid'. Maybe they think all Scottish people are farmers? But they were very gracious about it." Quinn is from the town of Paisley; he has previously appeared on episodes of Limmy's Show , Annika , and Derry Girls .

Who is Montgomery Scott?

Played by Doohan in Star Trek: The Original Series , Scott is the ever-capable head engineer of the USS Enterprise , famed for his ability to solve catastrophic problems in short periods of time. After the series went off the air, Doohan reprised the role in Star Trek: The Animated Series and in all six of the feature films starring the series' original cast. He also returned for a cameo in Star Trek: Generations , attending the launch of the USS Enterprise-B , and guest-starred on the Star Trek: The Next Generation episode "Relics", where he is discovered by the Enterprise-D 's crew a century in the future, having been preserved in a transporter buffer. Pegg took on the role for J.J. Abrams ' cinematic reboot of the franchise, and reprised it for its two sequels; a fourth film is still up in the air .

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds features the adventures of the USS Enterprise under the command of Captain Christopher Pike ( Anson Mount ) prior to The Original Series . It has so far featured two different chief engineers. Hemmer ( Bruce Horak ) was a member of the Aenar species, and sacrificed himself in the show's first-season finale to save the rest of the crew from the Gorn. His replacement was Pelia ( Carol Kane ), a long-lived Lanthanite, who joined the crew in the show's second season.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is currently filming its third season; no release date has yet been set . Stay tuned to Collider for future updates.

Star Trek: Strange New Worlds has been renewed for a fourth season

S eason 3 of Paramount Plus’ Star Trek: Strange New Worlds is still in production, but the streamer has already decided to renew the series. Unfortunately, the same can’t be said of Star Trek: Lower Decks , which is coming to an end.

Paramount Plus announced today that Star Trek: Strange New Worlds will be back for a fourth season following the premiere of its third sometime in 2025, and Star Wars: Lower Deck ’s upcoming fifth season will be the series’ finale. In a statement about Strange New Worlds ’ renewal, executive producer Alex Kurtzman and showrunners Akiva Goldsman and Henry Alonso Myers said they were thrilled about being able to continue telling new stories about the crew of the Enterprise.

And while Lower Decks is wrapping up, Kurtzman and showrunner Mike McMahan hinted that the crew of the Cerritos could “live on with new adventures” in the future after season five brings the series to a close this fall.
