Sure, there are people out there who like to use power to control other people—that’s pretty much the definition of a power trip. But is your boss, coworker, ex-friend, or estranged relative really one of them?

Not necessarily.

Not everybody who seems to be on a power trip actually is. Even the most controlling, domineering person in your life may simply be… protecting herself.

Self-protection isn’t the only alternative explanation for an apparent power trip. But it’s one that’s often overlooked.

If you can spot self-protection in action, you’re more likely to respond effectively and even potentially help the person heal.

The Power of Self-Protection

Most of us, if we’ve been hurt badly enough in the past, will prioritize doing whatever it takes to stay emotionally and physically safe.

Some of the behaviors we use as a shield can easily be mistaken for something more aggressive. Here are just a few examples:

• Dictating the details of how things play out to make sure we don’t get hurt again
• Requiring lots of information upfront before we agree to do things
• Changing our minds after agreeing to something that makes us nervous
• Reducing or eliminating contact with people who feel dangerous

All of these behaviors can come across as power-tripping. But self-protection is not about enjoying power; it’s about trying to ensure safety.

Sometimes, self-protection requires us to remove ourselves from certain relationships. There are various ways of doing this, ranging from “ ghosting ” (disappearing without explanation) to having a respectful conversation in which we clearly state our needs and boundaries in a way that others can choose to act on, or not, with the understanding that we hope they’ll be able to do so.

Mostly, when we’re in self-defense mode, we’re not especially polite. We might come across as unreasonable, stubborn, or even aggressive.

Think about it: If you’re at a backyard barbecue, and your shorts catch fire, you’re going to make a beeline for the swimming pool without concern for whose Coke you knock over. While you’re dashing to the pool, your only thought is for your own safety.

Even if we don’t feel especially powerful, our self-protection can make us look like power-hungry control freaks.

Refusing to return someone’s phone call, from their point of view, is just rude. Even if the truth is we’re scared of what might happen if we talk to them.

Leaving relationships, or acting inconsistently within them because of our own ambivalence, can come across as a power trip because we’re controlling the contact schedule. Sometimes we’re available; other times, we’re not. We decide from moment to moment what we can tolerate.

To the person on the receiving end, we’re just messing with them.

How to Respond

If you’re on the other side, looking at someone who appears to be on a power trip, there are some questions you might consider. To your knowledge…

Has that person experienced physical harm, emotional pain, or deep disappointment in relationships?

How secure does he seem, in general? How’s his overall self-image ?

Is it possible that the “power trip” is really just a need for safety?

If the relationship is important to you, don’t skip over self-protection as a possible explanation for behavior that appears power-driven.

If it might be the case that the person is protecting himself, how can you help him feel safer, especially in the relationship you share?

Here are a few ways to provide safety for people who’ve been hurt and/or traumatized in relationships:

• Ask permission. Ask about timing, locations, activities, topics that are OK to discuss… anything that the person seems anxious to control. These are important to her, so let her decide what feels OK.
• Offer choices. Same as above, and let the person know you’re open to hearing her ideas and preferences. Respect her choices, as long as they don’t directly violate your personal boundaries.
• Don’t push. Fear of being dominated often goes hand in hand with concerns about safety. Never try to coerce someone who’s been traumatized into doing what you want them to do.
• Be patient. Intrusive self-protective behaviors stem from past harm, not malice. People need time, understanding, and acceptance in order to heal.

These behaviors represent the opposite of what most of us feel like doing when someone is throwing their weight around. It’s human nature to want to push back against anything that feels like an inappropriate power-grab.

So if the relationship is not that important to you, you may choose simply not to deal with someone who seems to be on a power trip.

But now that you know it could be something deeper, you can make an informed choice about your own response.

Having something trip the power in your home can be an extremely frustrating occurrence – especially if you’re in the middle of a task, and particularly if you don’t know what has caused it. Often, the problem may be simpler than you think. There are a few reasons why your power might have tripped. Even better, there are simple steps to follow to fix the problem quickly and easily, allowing you to get on with your day.

Causes of a Power Trip

Essentially, a power trip occurs when the electrical system in your home is compromised in some way. The trip is a safety mechanism, meaning your circuit breakers will ‘trip the switch’ and automatically shut down power to one or several systems, making sure the problem cannot become anything more serious. This can happen for a number of reasons.

Overloaded Circuit

The most simple cause of a power trip is an overloaded circuit. If you have too many devices or appliances running simultaneously, the circuit can end up drawing more electrical load than it is equipped to handle. It heats up, the circuit breaker senses this, and the power trips before the circuit can heat to a dangerous level.

Short Circuit

A short circuit can be caused by a wiring problem in a device or an appliance when it is connected to your main system. It can also happen if two opposing wires accidentally touch, causing an unexpected surge of electricity that will cause the circuit breaker to trip the system.

Earth Leakage Fault

An earth leakage fault is a type of short circuit, and it will happen when the current flowing through the electrical system finds an alternative path other than the active or neutral conductors. These are slightly more dangerous, particularly if they occur in places such as the bathroom or kitchen where moisture could carry the electricity and cause shocks. Once again, the increase in electricity will cause the circuit to heat up, and the circuit breaker will therefore initiate a power trip to prevent further damage.

What to Do About a Power Trip

In the case of a short circuit or a ground fault, it is advisable to promptly seek professional advice in order to resolve the problem safely. However, in the case of an overloaded circuit, you can often fix the problem yourself in a few simple steps.

Make sure to turn any appliances off that are connected to the affected system.

Master Switch

At the power board, your first move should be to turn off the master switch. This will ensure you cannot get hurt whilst fixing the problem.

Safety Switch

Make sure you have an RCD safety switch installed , and use it to check the safety of your appliances.

Once you have flipped the relevant switch back to the ‘on’ position, test that the circuit is working again. If it is not, or if it immediately trips again, it may be that the problem is more severe than an overloaded circuit, and it’s time to call in the professionals.

In Singapore, power trips are a frequent electrical emergency faced by homeowners. This occurs when the current in a circuit breaker exceeds the prescribed amount, thereby cutting off the electric supply. 

Although a power trip prevents damage to the wiring and other appliances, it can also result in a blackout. So to prevent it, here are some reasons why a power trip may occur in your circuit breaker and how you can resolve it. 

3 Reasons Why Circuit Breaker Keeps Tripping

Overloaded Electric Circuit

One main reason why a power trip happens is because of the electrical circuit getting overloaded beyond the prescribed limit.  When the current exceeds the rated capacity of the wiring, it can get damaged or create a fire hazard.  In order to prevent an actual fire from taking place, a circuit trip occurs. 

Connecting multiple electrical appliances to a power supply may also cause the power supply to trip. Malfunctioning appliances in particular may use up more power, increasing the total current supply and causing the circuit breaker to trip.

Short Circuit

A short circuit can also cause an HDB circuit breaker trip . One way to identify this is by checking for burning smells. Usually, a Short circuit occurs when the hot wire (black) touches a neutral wire (white).  A surge in current supply can also happen when electrical wiring with damaged insulation come into contact with each other. Damaged appliances or lighting components with wiring problems can also cause a short circuit when plugged into an outlet.

Ground Fault 

Besides short circuits, a power trip can also happen because of a ground fault. . When the circuit breaker’s hot wire comes into contact with the ground, the resistance is lowered and causes increased current.  A hot wire (black) which makes contact with a metallic object can also cause a circuit breaker trip to occur. 

Ground faults can also happen when homeowners ignore general electricity safety tips . Furthermore, this can cause a highly dangerous accident such as an electrical shock from switches or sockets . 

How to Fix a Power Trip

Overloaded Electric Circuit 

• Firstly, switch off all electronic appliances, gadgets, and light installations in the house.
• Next, switch on  all low power consumption electrical devices.  
• Now turn on your high power consumption appliances gradually until an electric trip occurs. Note down which high power consumption devices were connected when the trip happened.
• Whichever appliance has caused an increase in the power supply is likely to be the cause of your power trip.
• After determining the cause of your power trip, you can Connect the high power consumption electric appliance to another electric circuit to avoid another electric trip.
• Alternatively, you can upgrade your electrical wiring and hardware to carry the additional power load. While waiting for the wiring to be upgraded, you should minimize the use of appliances that consume more power as much as possible. You can also switch off all other appliances when only one is being used.

Compared to a power trip caused by overloading, fixing one which results from a short circuit is usually more difficult.

Usually, in the case of a short circuit, there is a massive spike in current which results in burning (causing a bad smell and discoloration). In that case, the electrical outlets should be switched off, and each of the power points and sockets should be inspected for any discoloration or smell. The insulation of the wiring should be checked as well. Furthermore, all the appliances should also be inspected for damage or odor. Usually the appliance with a short circuit will stop working and will have to be replaced or repaired.

Since most homes and offices have concealed wiring , it is not easy to inspect the wiring for damage or short circuit. Moreover, it is not easy to find out the exact condition of the wiring to detect any damage which has occurred. 

During monsoon seasons, an increase in the moisture levels or wet walls may cause a short circuit. Unfortunately, most property owners do not have the tools and experience to detect the damage to the concealed wiring. Hence it is advisable to hire the services of a licensed and experienced electrician who can accurately detect the short circuit and conduct an electrical wiring repair or replacement.

• Switch off all appliances and unplug them from the electric circuit.
• Switch on the circuit breaker .
• If there is no electric trip, each of the appliances should be connected to the circuit. Once the defective appliance is connected, the circuit breaker will trip.
• The faulty appliance should be repaired or replaced to prevent another ground fault.

President Joe Biden said in a new interview that he is “not confident at all” that there will be a peaceful transfer of power in January if former President Donald Trump loses the election this fall .

"If Trump loses, I'm not confident at all," Biden said when he was asked in an interview with CBS News whether he was confident that power would be peacefully transferred in January.

Biden also said in the clip that aired Wednesday evening that people were not taking Trump’s past comments about a “bloodbath” seriously.

“He means it, all the stuff about if we lose there’ll be a bloodbath,” Biden said. “You can’t love your country only when you win.”

Reached for comment, a Trump campaign spokesperson did not address the clip directly.

"President Trump will win and take back the White House to Make America Great Again," said the spokesperson, Steven Cheung.

Talking about economic policies, Trump said in March that “it’s going to be a bloodbath for the country” if he loses the election.

Three months later, during the June 27 presidential debate, Trump was asked whether he would accept the election results. After he repeatedly dodged the question, he responded , “If it’s a fair and legal and good election, absolutely.”In the CBS News interview, Biden also referred to efforts that could complicate post-election certification processes.

“Look what they’re trying to do now in the local election districts where people count the votes,” he said.

The Republican-controlled State Election Board in Georgia voted this week to give local officials more power over the certification of elections results. Over the weekend, Trump praised the officials who later approved the rule change.

The full interview with Biden is scheduled to air Sunday morning.

Biden narrowly defeated Trump in Georgia in 2020. His victory, by just 11,779 votes, made him the first Democratic presidential nominee to win the state since Bill Clinton in 1992 .

Trump has continued to draw concern over how he would respond to losing the 2024 race given his efforts nearly four years ago to overturn his loss. Trump has referred to Jan. 6, 2021, when a mob of his supporters stormed the Capitol, as "a beautiful day," and he has called those supporters imprisoned for crimes related to the attack “ unbelievable patriots ” and “ hostages .”

Last week, he renewed his pledge to pardon those facing convictions related to the attack if he is elected in November.

Ukraine-Russia war latest: Ukraine launches 'attack of astonishment' as troops 'enter another Russian region' after Kursk invasion

Ukraine's surprise invasion of Kursk is continuing, with battles raging into a sixth day. Drones and missiles have been launched and Volodymyr Zelenskyy has acknowledged Ukraine's offensive in the Russian region for the first time.

 We've just been hearing from our defence and security analyst Professor Michael Clarke  who says Ukraine has "launched an attack of complete astonishment" against Russia this week. 

As we've been reporting, Ukraine has invaded the Kursk region of Russia - prompting the evacuation of more than 70,000 people and emergency security measures to be activated across three Russian regions. 

Professor Clarke says the evidence points to Ukraine "winning this battle insofar as it goes".

"They haven't just launched a surprise attack - they've launched an attack of complete astonishment. They've astonished the Russians, astonished Western backers," he says. 

As things stand, the shock value of this surprise assault is "working in Kyiv's favour". 

The pocket that has driven into Russian territory is at least 35 miles long and about 15 miles deep, he says. 

"That's pretty powerful... the Ukrainians must be very pleased with where they are now."

Can Ukraine maintain its offensive?

Asked whether Ukraine's forces will be able to hold their position, Professor Clarke says they will need to be reinforced. 

He says the equivalent of about three or four brigades are in Russia, and these are "top level, elite troops". 

The analyst says this shows Ukraine is serious about this offensive. 

No information has been given about Ukraine's aims, and they have tightly controlled information security around the invasion, but Professor Clarke says Kyiv is undoubtedly hoping it will draw in good units of the Russian army and relieve Ukrainian frontlines elsewhere. 

Anecdotal evidence so far suggests Moscow is pulling its better units out of the south of Ukraine, including in the areas of Chasiv Yar and Pokrovsk. 

Russia "will do whatever it takes to eliminate this pocket", he says.

'Putin can't let this stand'

Professor Clarke says there is highly likely to be a response from Russia. 

"The idea of having a piece of their territory seized for the first time since 1941... Putin can't let that stand," he says. 

Moscow will "counter attack as strongly as they need to and this battle will get a great deal more ferocious yet". 

For Ukraine's part, Professor Clarke says Kyiv is "gambling on this offensive working" and "so far it's paying off". 

The longer the Ukrainians hold on in Kursk, the tougher it will be for Russia to push them out, he says.

Details about the number of Ukrainian soldiers inside Russia remain unclear as commanders have deliberately stayed silent about a mission that was planned in secret.

But it is likely to be in the thousands, with elements from at least three well-equipped brigades on the ground, deploying tanks, armoured vehicles, artillery guns and drones.

Also hard to measure is how far the Ukrainian attackers have pushed, with Russian military bloggers saying they have penetrated up to around 12 miles from the Ukrainian border.

Videos, widely circulated on social media, purport to show Ukrainian soldiers raising the yellow and blue flag of Ukraine over Russian territory, including in the town of Sudzha and a settlement close to the Ukrainian border in the next-door region of Belgorod.

Under pressure, Russia has rushed in reinforcements and released footage of its military fighting back, but this is the sixth day of the Ukrainian offensive and battles are still raging.

Commenting on events, analysts have noted that it is the first time Russia has been invaded since Adolf Hitler in 1941.

But Ukraine's attack is not the act of an aggressive power making a land grab.

Instead it is the counterintuitive action of a nation that was invaded by Vladimir Putin's Russia a decade ago – with the capture of Crimea and parts of eastern Ukraine – and subsequently further devastated by Moscow's full-scale invasion in February 2022.

It makes Kyiv's counter invasion into Kursk just the latest – though arguably the most audacious – effort by Ukraine to repel Russian forces from inside its own sovereign territory.

Countering Russia's much larger military means Ukrainian commanders have had to be innovative from the very start and be willing to take huge risks.

Two and a half years ago, outgunned and outnumbered Ukrainian troops - backed by Western weapons - defied the odds to prevent Russia from seizing Kyiv.

They then forced Russian invaders to withdraw from the whole of the north of Ukraine.

Months later, in September 2022, the Ukrainian side innovated once more.

It launched a surprise counteroffensive against Russian troops occupying the northeast of their country - just as Russia was encountering a simultaneous but much more widely anticipated counterattack in the south.

Ukraine recaptured swathes of territory in the Kharkiv region in that push. Its forces also continued the counterattack in the south, recapturing the southern city of Kherson.

However, Russian positions in other parts of southern Ukraine and across the Donbas in the east are far more entrenched and harder to defeat.

With Ukraine's Western allies handing over increasingly lethal weapons such as tanks and long range missiles, anticipation did grow last year about a second Ukrainian counteroffensive.

But that effort faltered as combat units failed to penetrate heavily fortified Russian lines.

This time around, under the leadership of Colonel General Oleksandr Syrskyi, commander in chief of the Ukrainian armed forces, Kyiv has taken a different gamble.

Rather than prepare its troops to attempt once more to storm Russian positions inside Ukraine, leaders have chosen to send their soldiers into Russia, where the border is – perhaps surprisingly – far less well-defended.

It is very unlikely that Ukraine has the capacity or the desire to seize and hold much – if any – territory, but it has dealt a humiliating blow to Mr Putin and brought Russia's bloody war in Ukraine far closer to home for the Russian people and their president.

A town in Russia's Belgorod region is facing shelling from Ukrainian forces today, local governor Vyacheslav Gladkov has said. 

Four people were injured, including three men with shrapnel wounds who were taken to hospital in Shebekino. 

They are said to be in a moderate condition. 

Shelling also damaged an apartment building, a bus stop and a bus, Mr Gladkov said. 

The region is currently under emergency measures after Ukrainian forces crossed the border into neighbouring Kursk region. 

Ukrainian media outlets earlier reported on a video appearing to show Ukrainian troops in the village of Poroz in the Belgorod region.

Poroz is about 130 kilometres west of Shebekino. 

We've just heard from the Ukrainian president, who has commented on last night's Russian attack on Kyiv. 

Volodymyr Zelenskyy offered his "deepest condolences" to the family of the father and son killed in the attack. 

He said preliminary information suggests Russia used a North Korean missile in the attack.

"Pyrotechnic experts are still working to determine the exact data regarding this missile," he wrote on X.

The president said Russia has launched more than 30 missiles and 800 guided aerial bombs at Ukraine in the last week. 

"Ukrainians are deeply grateful to all our partners who provide us with air defense systems and combat aircraft," he said. 

"However, to truly stop Russian terror, we need not only a full-fledged air shield that can protect all our cities and communities, but also strong decisions from our partners - decisions that will lift restrictions on our defensive actions." 

A block of flats has sustained damage and a car was set alight following an aerial attack on Russia's Kursk region overnight. 

Local authorities said the damage was caused by a downed Ukrainian missile. 

Kursk officials earlier said 13 people were injured in the attack. 

While the full extent of Ukraine's invasion of the Kursk region of Russia remains unclear, the town of Sudzha has been a focus over the last few days.

Located around 10.5km (6.5 miles) from the border with Ukraine, it is around 100km from the regional capital, the city of Kursk.

Sudzha had been home to around 5,000 people and is the site of an important gas transportation hub.

But after Ukrainian forces broke across the border on Tuesday in a shock counter-offensive, it is no longer certain that Sudzha is under Russian control.

Ukrainian troops that have crossed the border - and it's thought there could be several thousand - have been reportedly expanding the areas under their control. 

Ukrainian media outlets are reporting that Kyiv's forces appear to have entered Russia's Belgorod region. 

Troops previously entered the border into the Kursk region and fighting has been taking place there. 

Media outlets, including Ukraine's Suspilne, are now reporting on a video of five uniformed Ukrainian troops standing outside a building as one says: "I wish you health, the 252nd battalion is in the village of Poroz, Belgorod Oblast. Glory to Ukraine!" 

The soldiers were holding the battalion's flag and a Georgian flag. 

A sign on the building behind them reads "Porozovsky Village Club". 

The video has not been independently verified by Sky News, but Ukrainian-based fact-checking project VoxCheck confirmed the video was filmed in Poroz, three kilometres away from the Ukrainian border.

It's not clear when the video was filmed, or whether it might have been part of a raid. 

As we've been reporting, Volodymyr Zelenskyy has acknowledged the invasion of Russia's Kursk region for the first time. 

The Ukrainian president said his country is "restoring justice" and putting "pressure on the aggressor".

The Kremlin is seeking to "downplay" the scale of fighting in its Kursk region and prevent domestic panic or backlash, analysts have said. 

Russia announced a counter-terrorism operation yesterday after Ukrainian forces invaded Kursk, but the US-based Institute for the Study of War has said there was a conscious decision not to declare a state of war or martial law. 

It said there was a "reluctance to take more drastic measures to respond to the situation".

Declaring martial law would have allowed Russian authorities to prohibit rallies and demonstrations, enact curfews, and organise the production of defence articles for the military.

Russian opposition outlet Verstka reported earlier this week that a source close to the Russian Federation Council's defense committee said the presidential administration had recommended Russian deputies and senators not comment on the events in Kursk "until further notice". 

The ISW said: "Russian President Vladimir Putin has refrained from officially declaring a state of war, has repeatedly demonstrated his unwillingness to transfer Russian society fully to a war-time footing, and has forgone declaring general mobilization as part of wider efforts to prevent domestic discontent that could threaten the stability of Putin's regime."

We've been reporting that Belarus has claimed it shot down unspecified objects launched from Ukraine, and we can bring you more detail on that story now. 

Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has said his country's air forces destroyed several of "about a dozen" Ukrainian drones after they violated his country's airspace in the Mogilev region bordering Russia. 

Mr Lukashenko - a close ally of Vladimir Putin - said other drones were later destroyed near the Russian city of Yaroslavl. 

I don't understand why Ukraine had to do this. We have to look into it," the BelTA news agency quoted him as saying. 

"But we have...made ourselves clear and conveyed to them that any provocation will not go unanswered."

In response, Belarus has sent more troops to reinforce its border with Ukraine. 

The foreign ministry also summoned Ukraine's charge d'affaires, demanded measures to ensure such incidents would not recur and suggested a repeat would prompt Belarus to consider whether Kyiv's diplomatic presence in Minsk was "appropriate".

Star Power Elevates Pin Trading, the Unofficial Sport of the Olympics

Celebrities and athletes are chronicling the chase for their most prized conquests on social media, with high demand for designs from Snoop Dogg and Simone Biles.

Since the Paris Olympics kicked off, a pair of tiny orange Dutch clogs, the unofficial pin of the Netherlands team, has become a coveted currency among the athletes. Nearly an inch long and dangling from a butterfly clutch, the pin exchanged hands between Yara ten Holte, a Dutch handball player, and Ilona Maher, the U.S. women’s rugby star, who gleefully flaunted her prize on TikTok.

“One thing about the Olympic Village is, trading pins is serious business,” Ms. Maher said last week in a post that was viewed more than 2.7 million times. “We don’t mess around trading pins, OK?”

Trading in pins — those tiny, shiny emblems made by sports delegations, federations, countries and the media outlets covering them — is a longstanding tradition at the Olympics. But the activity was subdued during the pandemic , as restrictions at the Summer Games in Tokyo and the Winter Games in Beijing prevented athletes, fans and pin collectors from getting anywhere near one another.

In Paris, however, pin mania has come roaring back, this time elevated by celebrity star power and athletes chronicling their most prized conquests on social media. With more than 14,000 international athletes gathered in the Olympic Village outside Paris, pin swapping has become the Games’ hottest unofficial sport.

“I’m a first-class pin collector,” Serena Williams declared in a video on the Paris Olympics Instagram account. A pins aficionado, she said her most prized possession was a rare find from the North Korean sports delegation, which she acquired during the 2016 Rio Games. “I would never, ever trade that,” she said.

Stephen Curry, a two-time most valuable player for the N.B.A., was filmed handing out pins on the American team boat during the opening ceremony. The gymnast Simone Biles came to Paris with a bagful of her own designs in the shape of a curvy gold heart adorned with her signature. They instantly became one of the most coveted items in town.

And then there is Snoop Dogg , a breakout star of the Paris Games as a commentator for NBCUniversal. His custom-made pin — a bling-worthy silver rectangle — features a portrait of him in a royal blue tracksuit blowing Olympic-colored smoke rings into the air, with the Eiffel Tower shimmering in the background.

In a video that ricocheted across social media, he offered one to Coco Gauff, the U.S. tennis champion, whose Olympic run ended last week. “This is for you, great game,” Snoop Dogg said, wearing a T-shirt emblazoned with her face. “This is the best pin I’ve ever gotten,” Ms. Gauff replied in a video.

Olympic pins were originally used to identify athletes, judges and officials, starting in 1896 with the first modern Games in Athens, where cardboard discs bearing names and countries were pinned to clothing. Over time, pins became sleeker and enameled, with Olympic committees and sponsors issuing them as merchandise to cash in or cover costs. (The New York Times makes its own pins that it gives to reporters covering events.)

But beyond the commercial aspect, Olympic pins are a currency of friendship and good will, with athletes seeking to trade badges from their countries or swap rare ones to enhance their collections.

Mylan Murphy, a content creator and the digital and social lead for Team U.S.A. in the Olympic Village, said he had come to Paris with three team pins and had been advised by athletes to get ready to trade.

“I had no idea what that meant at first,” he said. “But it instantly turned into this bonding thing, bringing everyone together, even people who don’t speak the same language.”

Jasmine Schofield, a swimmer representing Dominica, asked other athletes to rate her collection . Her country has only four athletes, which makes their pins rare. “But we love to give out our pins, so please come get them,” she said on TikTok.

The Japanese tennis champion Naomi Osaka said on X that she was pining for a Haitian pin. “I’m going to beg them for it, or I’m going to park myself outside the Haitian building,” she said.

“Social media has really amplified this,” Mr. Murphy said. “Before it was this unspoken pin trading thing. Now one pin can go viral because someone likes it, and it becomes the hottest thing in the village.”

What’s the holy grail? Desire for Snoop Dogg’s pin is off the charts. And there was a lot of buzz around a table tennis pin after Mr. Curry persuaded the U.S. women’s table tennis squad to challenge his teammate Anthony Edwards to a match.

From an international standpoint, Mr. Murphy added, the Dutch clogs pin that Ms. Maher, the rugby star, scored is in “high demand.”

But the hottest thing going is the Simone Biles pin, and it has become nothing short of an obsession to get one. Alena Saili, a gold medalist for the New Zealand women’s rugby team, meticulously chronicled her team’s “pinquest” on TikTok.

Ms. Saili’s teammate Tysha Ikenasio finally scored one after approaching Ms. Biles. “What happened was, I was leaving the food hall, and I just got. …” She held up the heart-shaped pin and screamed.
