On these special summer and holiday voyages, kids ages three to 17 can participate in more robust supervised “Junior Activities” programming, with a focus on entertainment and enrichment. Dedicated spaces for both young’uns (ages three to 12) and teens (ages 13 to 17) are outfitted with crafts, gaming consoles, computers, and more; the teen space also boasts a video arcade. Elsewhere on the ship, children can find kid-friendly books and movies in the library or catch flicks—served with popcorn—in the theater.

Regent Seven Seas ships take on a family-friendly air on select summer and holiday voyages (including all of the line’s Alaska itineraries), thanks to its Club Mariner Youth Program , which brings kid-primed programming—helmed by professional youth counselors—on board to entertain children ages five to 17. Planned activities are broken down by age group, for kids ages five to eight (such as cookie decorating, pajama parties, and meet the captain events), nine to 12 (scavenger hunts, dodgeball, dance parties), and 13 to 17 (lounge nights and sports tournaments).

Although the line’s four vessels—with capacity for 450 to 750 passengers—don’t boast dedicated children’s facilities, the card/conference room becomes the makeshift hub for all things kid-related during these special sailings.

Standard kids’ fares for third and fourth berths start at $499, but the line often runs promos where kids sail free. Bonus: Kids’ fares include unlimited shore excursions, too.

What really stands out, however, is Cunard’s complimentary night nursery for infants ages six to 23 months (an industry rarity), where wee ones can dream under nannies’ watchful eyes while parents have their turn to play (from 6 p.m. to 11 p.m.). The line’s flagship 2,691-passenger Queen Mary 2 ups the ante further still with its full-scale planetarium and unique lessons such as fencing and ballroom dancing.

On any ship, youngsters in third and fourth berths sail at half price when traveling with two paying adults.

While there are no dedicated kids-themed sailings or family-focused shore excursions to speak of, Cunard’s 2,081-passenger Queen Elizabeth will sail to family-friendly Alaska (land of kid favorites such as dog sledding and whale-watching) for the first time in 20 years, with 10-night round-trip voyages out of Vancouver starting in May 2019.

Europa 2 ’s comfortable family-designed cabins come equipped with changing tables, mini kid-sized bathroom fixtures, and games; diapers and baby foods can be pre-ordered, too.

Posh Paul Gauguin Cruises’s 2017-debuted “ Stewards of Nature ” program, presented in partnership with the Wildlife Conservation Society (WCS), welcomes families to explore Tahiti , French Polynesia , and more of the South Pacific during summer and December holiday sailings. While flitting from one fantasy island setting to the next aboard the 332-passenger Paul Gauguin, little cruisers (ages seven to 17) can set out on interactive naturalist-lead excursions to the islands and beaches (try snorkeling or dolphin-watching). Best of all, passengers 17 and younger sail free when sailing in the same stateroom with two paying adults. The caveat? Disney Cruise Line

The hot ticket for Disney Cruise Line fans is the 4,000-passenger Disney Wish , which debuts on July 14 as the line’s fifth ship and first new ship in a decade. All-new features include an animated AquaMouse attraction (a wet ride on a 760-foot track), a Star Wars bar, and an Avengers-themed dining experience. On all of Disney’s ships, princesses and other characters pose for photos and star in full-scale musical productions highlighting Disney hits, like Frozen , eliciting squeals of delight. The family-centric vibe includes waitstaff who are experts in dealing with fussy eaters, and cabins with one-and-a-half bathrooms. The Oceaneer Club and Oceaneer Lab (for ages 3-12) are themed with such attractions as a Marvel Super Hero Academy. Carnival Cruise Line

Carnival got a lot of attention last year when it introduced the 5,200-passenger Mardi Gras , with the “wow” feature of the first rollercoaster at sea. Sister ship Carnival Celebration , also with a rollercoaster, debuts in November 2022. The line caters to families in a big way with waterparks and twisting slides, outdoor ropes courses, and video arcades. A “Seuss at Sea” program encourages kids to read Dr. Seuss classics, with The Cat in the Hat appearing at a Green Eggs and Ham Breakfast (complete with themed food). Family Harbor cabins and suites come with access to a private family lounge for breakfast, snacks, and video-game play. Camp Ocean entertains kids ages 2-11 with everything from crafts to dancing to video gaming, with separate clubs for tweens (ages 12-14) and teens (15-17). Three of Norwegian’s latest ships are topped with two-deck racetracks where older kids and adults can drive go-karts high above the ocean (younger kids can ride as passengers). The line’s newest ship, the 3,099-passenger Norwegian Prima, debuting in Europe in August, has the world’s first three-level shipboard racetrack—plus two thrilling 10-story free-fall slides at Aqua Parks. Video arcades and interactive games also appeal to the family crowd. Norwegian’s Splash Academy (for ages 5-12) youth program entertains kids with creative play and games, while teens can also enjoy the ship’s virtual gaming complex, the Galaxy Pavilion. Princess Cruises’ affiliation with Discovery TV makes it an excellent choice for multigenerational families—especially in Alaska. Kids in Camp Discovery (ages 3-12) may participate in science challenges tied to programs such as MythBusters and Shark Week . Wearable OceanMedallion technology lets you locate the whereabouts of teens when they are not in their own beach club, and you can all gather for a virtual scavenger hunt or watch the latest movies on a big screen under the stars. Lindblad Expeditions

For multigenerational families who prefer a nature-focused, soft-adventure experience, Lindblad partners with National Geographic for a program that has kids collecting plankton, driving inflatable Zodiacs, and otherwise earning points to become a National Geographic Global Explorer. The eight best cruise ships for families are luxury hotels, restaurants, sports arenas and entertainment venues all rolled into one. Cruise ships today are no less than our holiday escape on a 5-star floating resort.

So which cruise ship is best for you and your family, and who offers kid-friendly cruises?

There is much to consider when choosing how to spend your vacation budget. Especially as you have most likely taken time to save for your dream vacation . Or if this is one of the few times a year you can get the whole family on a fantastic holiday that everyone – old and young – can enjoy together.

Knowing what questions to ask yourself in the planning stage will guide you in making the right choice when picking the best family cruise for you. And our tips below will help you narrow your choice.

We have put together our top 8 best cruise ships for families – and the reasons we think they are great. All of these are kid-friendly cruise lines. Here’s what to expect onboard and in which region these cruise ships sail in 2023. If you find the cruise ship to suit you but not the itinerary you want, check out the sister ships, which offer similar facilities but have different ports of call. That way, you can build your perfect cruise.

1. Royal Caribbean Cruise Line – Wonder of the Seas

Let’s start with the biggest and best cruise line among these eight best cruise ships for families. Who doesn’t like to sail the ocean in a mini-city and have the best of everything within walking distance? Here is our first vote in Royal Caribbean Cruise Line’s fleet for the best cruise ship.

The Oasis Class – perfect for kids and active families

Sister ship to Harmony, Allure, Symphony, and Oasis of the Seas, which all belong to Royal’s “Oasis” class, Wonder of the Seas gives you some of the best adventures and entertainment at sea. Recommended for families and adventurous, lively couples, Wonder had its maiden voyage in March of 2022. Expensive? Yes. Value for money? Absolutely.

Start with a ten-story high slide thrill in a tunnel, the Ultimate Abyss, that delivers you safely to the boardwalk deck. Learn to surf on their wave riders on the top deck or meet new friends in a glow-in-the-dark laser tag game. Adventure is the name of the game here.

There are great kids clubs, and if you are traveling with teens. They will have their lounge and a new dedicated outdoor deck area where making new friends will be easy. Your kids can even try out a Mission Control Apollo 18 escape room.

The pool decks are fantastic – so good that they get very crowded. Expect a Caribbean-style pool area with more bars, whirlpools, and a variety of seating, including day beds and cabanas.

Family dining and live music

You will be spoilt for choice when dining, but we like Giovanni’s Italian kitchen and wine bar. You get rustic family-style dining with the traditional Italian dishes that everybody loves. Also on offer will be Poolside BBQ and Playmakers Sports Bar & Arcade, both highly popular with families.

For music fans, you will love the Music Bar, where you will find live music and fantastic dance floors. The Spotlight Karaoke venue is always a cruise highlight where you can sing your heart out in front of other guests. This is one of the most popular venues onboard Royals ships and is great fun. It is safe to say that Wonder of the Seas offers some of the best family fun at sea.

2. royal caribbean cruise line – voyager of the seas.

• Year: 1999. Updated 2019

Voyager of the Seas is a great cruise ship amongst the fleet of Royal Caribbean for all types of guests. It’s a classy, elegant ship without being stuffy. You get a luxurious cruise on a ship that has recently upgraded. And offers just the right variety of restaurants, entertainment, sports, and relaxation.

Guest areas such as the Promenade deck, the Royal Theatre, and the fitness area have all been refreshed and refined. And the ice rink – the first at-sea ice rink on any cruise ship – still offers mesmerizing evening shows. The Perfect Storm twin waterslides and laser tag areas have been rebuilt, and a fantastic outdoor space is now exclusively for teens.

Great design, great restaurants

The Schooner Bar, a Royal Caribbean classic, is a must. We love the classical nautical design, ample seating areas, friendly bar service, and excellent atmosphere day and night. But if you’re traveling with teens, visit The Tavern instead, as they will enjoy the big-screen TV sports games. Among all the specialty restaurants onboard, Chops Grill is the firm favorite with our teens.

3. norwegian cruise lines – norwegian encore.

• Number of guests: 3998

Norwegian Encore is our favorite in the Breakaway Plus class of ships and is the sister ship to Joy and Bliss. If you find an itinerary to your dream destination and are lucky enough to be on one of these ships, you will not be disappointed. These cruise ships are spectacular and authentic works of art.

Thrill rides for an adrenalin rush onboard

To start with, let’s talk about activities. The go-kart track on board gives the kids the adrenaline rush they may seek! There are two water slides – including Ocean Loops, for a real thrill ride. You’ll find four hot tubs and plenty of loungers. On deck 16, there are two large pools, a kid’s aqua park, and bars. At night there are great dance parties on deck.

A speedway track that loops over the ship’s side will give a fantastic experience for those who love speed! This feature alone could win this ship among the best cruise ships for families! The galaxy pavilion is a virtual reality theme park, but there is an extra charge – not really for me, but your teenagers will love it!

Nearer to the front of the ship, you can play laser tag. We recommend making a reservation from your cabin via your TV. The laser tag and the speedway track cost extra, and you can book and pay on board.

The new Galaxy Pavilion offers full och virtual reality experiences. It’s incredible. However, everything is at an extra charge.

A multitude of dining options

You have a fantastic choice regarding their main dining restaurants (no reservation needed). Try the American Dining restaurant – a specialty restaurant with great food and decor reminiscent of a 50’s diner with booths and authentic touches everywhere. I love this place.

On deck 17, we recommend Le Bistro, a French diner for those who want elegant dining and perfect service. Cagney’s Steakhouse is excellent if you prefer a casual atmosphere and offers food to rival any great steak restaurant.

Back to deck 8, you find The Waterfront, a quarter-mile extended outdoor promenade deck that comes into its own at sunset. Relax at the bar at sundown, an excellent place to recharge your batteries before you choose evening entertainment.

If you are a music fan, NCL has built a replica of The Beatle’s famous Cavern Club; here, you can hear Beatles music and listen to the tribute bands. If you love beer, visit the District Brew House, where you are spoilt for choice. And if you never tire of a pub atmosphere, visit The Local for pub-style food and drinks, and you can even try your hand at bowling.

At the Q Texas Smokehouse on deck 6, try authentic Texas-style BBQ and listen to country music. Head to The Social comedy club afterward. We recommend you pay at least one visit to Teppanyaki, where you can watch your entertaining chef’s slicing and dicing skills; it’s a fun family experience with a menu to suit all.

Open-air movies on deck

There is a vast open-air movie screen with plenty of seating; it’s excellent in the evening as the sun goes down. Grab a bite from the buffet restaurant and a glass of wine, and nab a sofa before the crowds arrive. If you need something warmer, we appreciate the Starbucks on board for a warm drink and something sweet to finish the evening. Check out the Southern Night Rock evenings with great music and good snacks.

The Guppies and the Splash Academy kids clubs offer fully supervised activities for your youngsters. Entourage is a parent-free zone, so your teens will have a fun, safe environment to enjoy with other teen guests.

4. Norwegian Cruise Lines – Norwegian Jewel

Every cruising family I meet loves NCL Jewel , and that’s why Jewel is on our best cruise ships for families list. It’s a popular mid-size with a capacity of under 2400 passengers; the ship is comparatively small compared to the larger, newer ships. And it may be old (built in 2005) but has undergone an extensive refurbishment in 2018, bringing it to its gleaming glory again. With a more modern, fresher, and lighter decor, Jewel feels more personal than the bigger ships and is one of the best cruise ships we have experienced.

The renovation included building the brand new Pit Stop, an all-American bar reminiscent of the beloved 50s era. This replaced the old Sky High bar and is an exciting addition.

Open 24/7, the O’Sheehans Neighborhood Bar & Grill is great. It’s a relaxed place to eat breakfast, lunch, or dinner and a good party venue in the evening. These are just a couple of the 20 restaurants on board to choose from. Six of these are included in your price, and where you will have great food even if you don’t want to pay extra to try the specialty restaurants.

The Bliss Ultra lounge has replaced the old karaoke lounge, as it is the place where you enjoy more classic dance music.

A smaller ship with exciting itineraries

What we love about this ship as one of the best cruise ships for families is that it is elegant without being flashy. The colors are soft and modern without being cold, and the staff seems at ease, experienced, and with an eye for detail. I loved being on board. It’s smaller than many other NCL ships, with exciting itineraries to more unusual ports.

Smaller ships can dock at ports that don’t allow the bigger ships to dock. So you are likely to find your dream itinerary but note that while there are great kids clubs and pools, there are fewer activities on board, Which means fewer venues for you to visit compared to the Bliss, Encore, and Joy.

5. MSC Cruises – MSC Grandiosa

• Number of guests: 6300

MSC Cruises has a reputation for being a less expensive cruise experience with great kids’ prices. Founded in Italy, MSC is very popular amongst European guests. MSC Grandiosa was launched in November of 2019 and is, in our opinion, their best ship to date. And therefore, it’s here in our summary of the ten best cruise ships.

The glamour of Italy on board

MSC Grandiosa has a stunning interior, full of glamour and highlighted by the sparkling digital sky overhead. As you walk the indoor promenade, look up – the digital LED roof changes view often and are remarkable.

MSC Grandiosa is a big ship. There are enough cabins for over 6000 guests. The vast theatre offers free nightly shows, like most other cruise lines. And while the standard may not be up to the same par as the Broadway shows of Royal Caribbean, they are entertaining.

Cirque de Soleil at Sea

As an alternative, there is a smaller theatre that offers the Cirque de Soleil shows at an additional cost. We recommend booking dinner and the Cirque de Soleil show package from home before you sail, as it is popular. But apart from some of the stand-up comics evenings, we must admit that we mostly gave the theatre shows a miss while on board. We preferred instead to spend time in the bars, lounges, and on the dance floor.

Family-friendly prices

MSC Cruises is very family-friendly, with prices to match. You often have a luxurious family cruising experience at a lower price than Royal Caribbean or NCL Cruise Line. As the cruise line was founded in Italy, the theme of the food in the main dining rooms is Italian too. But coupled with specialty restaurants (12 dining rooms on board), you will be spoilt for choice for cuisine from around the world.

There are some different classes to choose from when booking MSC Cruises. Each cabin class offers different experiences: Bella, Fantastica, or Aurea, and you can read all about what is included in each category on their website.

We have cruised with MSC Cruises several times and are a fan of their Aurea class, including the all-inclusive beverage package, free spa treatment, and a private sun deck. We felt this was well worth the extra.

6. Carnival Cruise Line – Carnival Vista

• Number of guests: 3934

Carnival is one of the largest cruise companies in the world and is soon celebrating its 50th birthday. With a long history of being synonymous with fun, Carnival Vista offers all the family fun you could wish for on vacation.

With playgrounds for all ages, this fun ship boasts a “sky ride,” a suspended pedal bike track early 50 meters above the ocean. There are numerous colorful activities on board – take the Imax theatre, for example – that keep Carnival attracting families with children coming back for more.

Family Harbour is a family zone offering various room configurations where up to 5 can stay in each cabin. Carnival is one of the cruise lines that cater to large families. You can access the family lounge with movies, popcorn, self-serve ice cream machines, and more.

What we love about Carnival Vista is the endless choices of food venues; you will soon see that this is a cruise ship for families and kids who may be fussy eaters. There is something for you all on board, including you adults, with fantastic piano bars, comedy clubs, and even an onboard brewery.

Havana Cabanas on Vista class ships

We recommend looking at the Havanna category of cabins to book a room if you have children 12 or over. Havana cabins are available only on Vista category ships (Carnival Vista, Carnival Panorama, Carnival Horizon).

The Havana Cabana rooms are spacious, with island-inspired decor and ocean-facing patios. In addition, you have access to a private area designated only for Havana guests: pool, hot tubs, bar area, 24-hour ice cream and pizza, and a breakfast buffet area. Beware! If you are a super-private person, then it’s essential to know that other guests can walk by your area. There is a walkway between your patio and the railings looking over the ocean.

Therefore if you like your privacy, opt for the balcony rooms instead. But if you can afford the extra cost and are very social, we love the additional perks that this area on Carnival Vista offers!

• Western Caribbean

7. Princess Cruises – Sky Princess

• Number of guests: 3660

Much like Celebrity Cruises, Princess ships do not have giant water slides and aqua parks for your kids. But they make up for this in many other ways. The newer vessels are beautiful and modern yet still feel traditional, focusing on good cuisine and service, many activities on board, and fun-packed evening shows.

We recommend the newer Princess ships, and our choice is Sky Princess. We can also expect good things from the latest ship Enchanted Princess, and Discovery Princess is launching in Spring 2022.

A mix of private areas for adults and fantastic facilities for the whole family

Sky Princess is stunning. We feel that you get good value for money on this ship. If you are traveling as a couple, we highly recommend The Sanctuary and The Retreat, private outdoor areas for adults. The main pool area for all guests and families has two deep pools and plenty of space for loungers. In the evening, this area becomes an outdoor movie theatre. It’s one of our favorite spaces onboard among the many.

If you are lucky enough to book one of the two sky suites onboard, you can even get a direct view of the movie screen from your private balcony.

One downside we discovered with Princess Cruises is that they allow smoking inside the casino rather than having a separate room for smokers. So if you adults were considering visiting the casino while the children were using the kids’ clubs, beware that there will be smokers there. If you don’t enjoy being around smokers, this will affect your enjoyment of the casino.

The entertainment is great fun onboard Sky Princess with a good mix of magic shows, comedy, and acrobatics. You’ll also find a basketball court, minigolf, a running track, and self-service laundry facilities (for a few dollars per load, and you buy tokens onboard). And a fantastic Seawalk glass platform on either side of the ship hangs out over the ocean.

Children are entertained in kid-friendly areas of The Treehouse, The Beach House, and Camp Discovery, from tots to teens.

8. Disney Cruise Line – Disney Magic

• Year: 1998. Updated 2018

Disney is hard to beat regarding family entertainment, nostalgia, and fun. From super musical theatre shows to superheroes (Disney Magic is offering Marvel-themed sailings), Disney offers up the heart-warming quality we have come to expect, year after year, cruise after cruise.

We love Disney Magic for its friendliness and intimacy. While the ship is old, the renovations and modernizations are current.

The family pool area may not be huge, but we don’t think your kids will notice with all the other available activities. And for an escape, the adults can enjoy the larger adult-only pool at the front of the ship.

Service is paramount, as you would expect from Disney, and it’s service with a smile at all times. The staff pays attention to details, and everything in your cabin is geared towards making light of traveling with kids. Everything around you will be Disney, from the music you hear playing, the costume characters in the dining rooms to your Mickey-shaped deserts. So if you can’t get enough of Disney, especially if you have young children, this cruise ship is for you, despite the high-end price tag.

But as survey after survey has shown, most people who try a cruise for the first time give it high marks — and many end up cruising again. The odds are high you'll give it high marks, too.

Still, before you can get to the point where you're raving about your life exploring the world by sea, you have a big decision ahead of you: Which line should you book?

It's not an easy decision. There are dozens of cruise lines, and no two are alike. Some only operate big ships. Some operate small ships. Some sail only in North America. Others sail all over the world. Some offer ships designed for family fun . Others don't even allow children on board .

Additionally, you'll find adventure-focused "expedition" cruise companies that offer yet another completely different kind of cruising — one that involves heading to off-the-beaten-path places like Antarctica on small, hardy vessels designed for exploring. Some cruise companies specialize in ships that travel on rivers, while others operate sailing ships.

If you hear somebody say they'd never take a cruise because the ships are "too big" or "too crowded," you've met someone who has no idea what's out there.

You can cruise on a big, boisterous ship that carries 6,000 people or a tiny, yachtlike vessel that carries 60 people — and everything in between.

The cruise industry likes to break down its offerings into a bunch of oddly named categories, such as "contemporary" lines and "premium" lines. But to me, that's all marketing speak. Just ignore it when you see it. After three decades covering the industry, I like to break things down into the six categories you'll find below and (in a few cases) several subset categories, each of which appeals to a different type of vacationer.

The biggies

Seven big lines account for the majority of cruises taken by North Americans. They are, in order of size (when measured by passenger capacity):

• Royal Caribbean : 28 ships; 105,319 berths
• Carnival Cruise Line : 27 ships; 89,010 berths
• MSC Cruises : 22 ships; 77,832 berths
• Norwegian Cruise Line : 19 ships; 56,780 berths
• Princess Cruises : 16 ships; 50,116 berths
• Celebrity Cruises : 16 ships; 29,993 berths
• Holland America : 11 ships; 22,810 berths

If you are cruising for the first time, you will likely travel with one of the above brands — if only because they dominate the market for cruises among North Americans and, indeed, the world. As you can read in our ultimate guide to Royal Caribbean , this single brand alone accounts for nearly 20% of all cruises taken worldwide. Add in the next three biggest players — Carnival, MSC Cruises and Norwegian — and you're up to over 50% of the cruise business.

The cruise industry likes to label these seven lines as either "contemporary" (the first four on the list) or "premium" (the next three on the list). The idea is that the latter three brands offer a "premium" product to the first four. Such nomenclature is a throwback to the early days of cruising that I believe doesn't have much relevance anymore.

All of these brands have changed over the years, and the old distinctions no longer apply. For instance, you can get a "premium" experience in The Haven, an exclusive area on Norwegian ships, that will top anything you'll experience on many so-called premium ships. The experience on a Royal Caribbean ship can be just as elegant — or more so — as the experience on a Princess ship.

What all these brands have in common is that they operate relatively large, mass-market vessels with starting prices that are relatively affordable. Just keep in mind that the term "large" is relative. There is a wide variation among these brands in the size of their ships. The biggest Holland America ships, for instance, are less than half the size of the biggest Royal Caribbean ships and hold far fewer passengers.

Indeed, while Holland America vessels are "large" compared with many of the luxury, expedition and river ships that I will talk about later in this story, the brand often is labeled a "midsize" ship operator in the industry to differentiate it from the lines operating the biggest ships.

You'll also find that the size of the ships within the fleets of each of these brands can vary significantly. For instance, Royal Caribbean's biggest ships are three times the size of its smallest ships.

The key thing to know about the seven "biggies," as I call them, is that the type of experience they offer varies greatly. If you're booking a cruise for the first time, know that the seven lines are not necessarily interchangeable — even in cases where they offer similar pricing on similar itineraries. You may love one of these brands but not like another, depending on your tastes and preferences.

I break them down into three broad categories, each appealing to a different type of vacationer.

The floating megaresort lines

Are you a fan of big, bustling megaresorts with every amusement known to humans? You'll probably want to gravitate toward Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and MSC Cruises. These three brands are what I call the "floating megaresort lines" — lines that offer unusually giant ships that are the seagoing equivalent of land-based megaresorts such as Atlantis Paradise Island in the Bahamas.

We're talking ships with a seemingly endless array of deck-top fun zones, from water parks and surfing pools to go-kart tracks and laser tag courses, as well as oodles of restaurants , bars, entertainment venues, spas, casinos and more. These ships can hold as many as 5,000 or even 6,000 people, not including the crew.

One of these giant vessels, Royal Caribbean's Icon of the Seas , has room for a whopping 7,600 passengers with every berth filled, and it often sails with almost every berth filled .

These are brands designed to appeal to a wide demographic, including families with children of all ages. They offer cabins for $100 per night, cabins for $1,000 a night and everything in between. The best way to describe them is that they are like the big Las Vegas resorts , except they float.

As noted above, the size of each ship these brands operate varies. In general, the newer vessels in their fleets are the biggest, most megaresortlike vessels.

The anti-floating megaresort lines

If a ship topped with the cruising equivalent of an amusement park doesn't sound like your idea of fun, your best bets among the biggies are Princess, Holland America and Celebrity. These are what I call the "anti-floating megaresort lines."

Each of these brands operates medium-size to big ships that are not loaded up with water parks, rock climbing walls, surfing simulators and all the other things that are hallmarks of the floating megaresort lines. These are more traditional cruise ships for people who don't want a floating theme park or Las Vegas resort experience.

Instead of bustling attractions, the top decks of the ships these lines operate offer lots of quiet and relaxing pool and lounge areas where you can enjoy the experience of being at sea without a lot of hustle and bustle. Inside, the experience often revolves around dining, classic entertainment and a classy bar and music scene.

Compared with the floating megaresort lines, these brands draw more couples and fewer families. They skew older. At Princess, for instance, the average age of passengers is 57, and you see a lot of couples in their 50s, 60s and 70s on board.

At Holland America, the average age of passengers is closer to 70.

The budget option

And then there's Carnival. The "fun ship" line is also the budget line among the biggies — a brand all about great value.

If you price the cost of a cruise for a family of four, you'll often find that a sailing on a Carnival ship costs as little as half the amount of a cruise on a Royal Caribbean ship, assuming similar cabins and itineraries. The differential is even greater when you compare the cost of a family vacation on a Carnival ship with the cost of a trip on a Disney Cruise Line ship, assuming similar cabins and itineraries.

In addition to being incredibly inexpensive, Carnival ships are casual, unpretentious, fun-focused and, yes, a bit loud and wild. This is, after all, the brand that long held a hairy chest contest around the pool deck on every voyage to a standing-room-only, hooting and hollering crowd.

Like the "floating megaresort lines" above, Carnival is also known for amusements atop its ships, including water park areas, pedal-powered "sky rides" and — on its new ships Mardi Gras , Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee — the first roller coasters at sea .

But, in general, Carnival doesn't operate vessels quite as big and venue-packed as the big ships of Royal Caribbean, Norwegian and MSC Cruises. In recent years, until the arrival of Mardi Gras, Carnival Celebration and Carnival Jubilee, it didn't have a single vessel among the top 30 biggest cruise ships in the world.

Carnival also doesn't target as wide a demographic as the floating megaresort lines — at least, when it comes to income levels. Its ships lack the range of higher-priced suites aimed at upscale travelers that you'll find on, say, a Royal Caribbean vessel. Among the biggies, it's really in a class of its own.

Other biggies

There are a few more relatively large, mass-market lines in the world that I didn't include in the list of biggies, as they primarily cater to non-American vacationers.

These lines include Germany's Aida Cruises and TUI Cruises, both aimed at German-speaking travelers with onboard programs conducted in German. Aida, in particular, is a significantly large line — larger than Celebrity or Holland America when measured by passenger capacity. But unless you live in Germany, Austria or Switzerland, you've probably never heard of it and would be unlikely to ever sail on it.

There's also Italy-based Costa Cruises, which draws about 80% of its customers from Europe but does market to Americans, and United Kingdom-based P&O Cruises. The latter draws about 98% of its customers from the U.K.

When talking about berths in this story, I am referring to the number of beds on a ship based on double occupancy per cabin — or what used to be known as "lower berths" in the industry. The totals do not include extra sleeping spots created with pull-down bunks and pullout sofas that can inflate the "total berths" number some cruise lines list for their ships.

Luxury cruise lines

If your idea of a vacation is being pampered at every turn, and you have lots of money to burn, you'll want to start your search for a cruise line among the luxury cruise operators.

More than half a dozen major luxury players market to North Americans, including:

• Regent Seven Seas Cruises
• Silversea Cruises
• Hapag-Lloyd Cruises
• The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection
• Explora Journeys

Compared with mass-market cruise ships, luxury cruise ships typically offer bigger cabins (often every cabin is a suite), more elegant dining and high levels of service. It's not uncommon for luxury ships to have nearly as many crew members as passengers.

Luxury ships also typically offer more onboard space per passenger than mass-market ships. The "space ratio" of interior space to passengers can be twice as high. This means you'll have a lot of room to spread out and never experience crowds. At the same time, luxury ships generally are smaller than mass-market ships — often by a lot. That brings a much more intimate experience.

Within the luxury space, you'll find significant differences in the size and style of the ships. Five of Regent's six ships, for instance, are relatively large and famously elegant (think: soaring spaces, lots of marble and crystal chandeliers). They carry 700 to 750 passengers. (The line also has one significantly smaller vessel that carries 490 passengers.)

Five of Seabourn's seven vessels, with room for 450 to 600 passengers, are noticeably smaller than Regent's larger vessels. The Ritz-Carlton Yacht Collection — a new line that debuted in 2022 — launched with a vessel that carried just 298 passengers.

With each step down in size, you can expect fewer onboard venues, such as restaurants and lounges. But you also may find the experience more intimate. Smaller ships can sometimes access off-the-beaten-path ports that bigger ships can't.

What all the luxury lines have in common is that they are pricey. You can easily pay several times as much for a luxury cruise as a mass-market cruise. Indeed, it's not uncommon to see cabins on luxury cruises listed for $1,000 or more per person, per day.

However, comparing such high pricing to the pricing of mass-market cruises can be misleading. That's because luxury lines typically include almost every extra charge you could imagine — drinks of all types, gratuities, Wi-Fi and even flights to the ship — in their base fares.

Note that one of the luxury lines mentioned above, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, is a German line that operates many of its cruises in German only. But in recent years, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises has occasionally marketed to English speakers with specific sailings operated on a bilingual basis. While relatively unknown in North America, it operates several of the most elegant, spacious and service-focused cruise vessels anywhere in the world.

Also of note: Several new small luxury cruise lines are on the way. Luxury hotel company Four Seasons is building a fleet of small luxury cruise vessels that will begin debuting in 2026. Luxury purveyor Aman Resorts also plans to enter the cruise business in the coming years, as does the Orient Express brand .

Upscale-but-not-quite-luxury lines

Several additional cruise lines offer an upscale, elegant experience that isn't quite as white-glove as what you'll find on the luxury lines above but is still wonderful. These include:

• Oceania Cruises
• Windstar Cruises
• SeaDream Yacht Club

For the most part, these lines operate ships nearly as small and intimate as the luxury lines' ships. Oceania vessels carry around 700 to 1,250 passengers, for instance, while Viking ships carry 930 passengers. (We're talking about the line's ocean ships; Viking also operates river ships, which we'll discuss below.) Windstar vessels are even smaller, with room for 148 to 342 passengers. SeaDream's two yachtlike vessels hold just 112 passengers apiece.

Like luxury lines, these lines have a high staff-to-passenger ratio — though often not quite as high as the luxury lines. They also generally offer more space per passenger than mass-market lines and bigger cabins — but, again, not quite as big as what the luxury lines offer.

They're also generally less expensive than the luxury lines, but they don't always include as much in their base fares. You'll likely pay extra for gratuities and some drinks on ships in this cohort, for instance.

Compared with the mass-market biggies, the entry-level pricing of this group still is significantly more expensive. Often, an entry-level cabin on a ship operated by these lines is on par with a suite on one of the mass-market lines.

Note that quantifying which lines are "luxury" and which are "upscale but not quite luxury" is a tough business. Fast-growing Viking, notably, is careful to not call itself a luxury line. However, it offers an experience on its ocean ships that some would call luxury, with spectacular onboard service, high-end eateries and many inclusions in its base fares, such as a shore excursion in every port. To me, it straddles the line between the two categories.

Viking also has an ocean ship fleet that is all new. Every one of its ocean ships was built in the last nine years. That's relatively unusual among this group of lines.

Three of the lines listed in this segment — Azamara, Windstar and SeaDream — have fleets entirely made up of vessels that are at least a couple of decades old. Often, they are ships that were originally built as luxury vessels and were state-of-the-art in their time but no longer have as wide an array of amenities as newer luxury ships.

Notably, many cabins on Windstar and SeaDream vessels lack balconies — a feature that was rare on cruise ships a few decades ago but now is standard. All four Azamara ships and the four oldest Oceania ships have relatively small cabins compared with cabins on today's luxury ships.

Upscale line trivia : The four Azamara ships and the four oldest Oceania ships are sister vessels. They all once belonged to long-defunct Renaissance Cruises. You'll sometimes hear cruising aficionados refer to them by their Renaissance-related class name, the R Class.

Expedition lines

One of the fastest-growing segments of cruising in recent years has been "expedition cruising," a type of cruising that involves traveling to remote, hard-to-reach places such as Antarctica on small, hardy vessels that carry their own landing craft to get you ashore.

This type of cruising is so different from what the big mass-market lines offer that it might as well be considered an entirely different form of travel.

Expedition cruising is all about getting you to off-the-beaten-path places that often have little or no land-based infrastructure. You are traveling to these places by seagoing vessel because that's the only way to reach them.

On an expedition cruise, the focus is often on remote wilderness areas and the wildlife that inhabits them. Expedition leaders with deep knowledge of the destination will accompany you on your journey. Scientific experts such as biologists, geologists, ornithologists and a historian may also be on board to lead landings and give informative talks.

Big expedition cruise destinations include Antarctica and remote parts of the Arctic , such as the icy islands of Svalbard, Franz Josef Land and Canada's Northwest Passage. The wildlife-filled Galapagos, where many islands are uninhabited, is another classic expedition cruise market (with a vessel ecosystem all its own, thanks to unusual local regulations).

You'll also find expedition cruise vessels operating in remote parts of South America, Asia and the South Pacific, as well as some more mainstream destinations like Alaska.

The remote and rugged Kimberley region of Australia also is booming as an expedition cruise destination .

Notable players in the expedition cruising space include:

• Aurora Expeditions
• Atlas Ocean Voyages
• Lindblad Expeditions
• Hurtigruten
• Quark Expeditions
• Scenic Luxury Cruises
• Oceanwide Expeditions
• Poseidon Expeditions

Eagle-eyed readers will notice that four lines listed above — Silversea Cruises, Hapag-Lloyd Cruises, Seabourn and Viking — also appeared in this story's listing of luxury or almost-luxury lines. The four brands are major players in both the traditional luxury ship market and the expedition cruise ship market.

There is a growing trend of traditional cruise lines getting into the expedition cruise space. Two of the brands mentioned above — Seabourn and Viking — only added their first expedition ships in 2022 .

Additionally, luxury river cruise specialist Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours recently unveiled its first two expedition ships. The past three years have also brought an all-new luxury expedition cruise company, Atlas Ocean Voyages.

I also include UnCruise Adventures in this category of lines. It's a hard-to-categorize little line specializing in adventurous, outdoorsy, ship-based trips in remote parts of Alaska. It operates the tiniest of vessels, with the biggest among them holding just 86 passengers. Its trips revolve around hiking, kayaking, whale watching, birding and exploring by skiff.

Historically, expedition ships have carried under 200 passengers — a manageable number for an exploration-focused vessel operating in a remote location such as Antarctica — but a growing number of expedition ships carry more. Viking designed its new expedition ships to carry 378 passengers. Some new Hurtigruten expedition vessels are designed for around 500 people.

Note that expedition cruises are expensive, with pricing on par with traditional luxury cruises. Expedition ships are expensive to build on a per-berth basis and require a relatively high ratio of staff to passengers to operate compared with mass-market cruise ships.

River cruise lines

All the lines I have discussed so far have one thing in common: They operate oceangoing ships. Another entire segment of cruising revolves around travel on rivers.

Like expedition cruising, this has been a fast-growing segment of the cruise world in recent years, with capacity among the major river cruise lines growing at a rapid pace.

Much of the growth in river cruising has been driven by the marketing efforts and aggressive shipbuilding program of a single line, Viking. Founded in 1997 with four river vessels, Viking has exploded into a cruising colossus over the past 15 years with the rollout of more than 60 new river ships. (Starting in 2015, it also began adding ocean ships, which we discuss in the "upscale" segment above.)

Viking now accounts for about half of all river cruises taken by North Americans, but it's not the only significant river cruise player. Other major brands that market river cruises to North Americans include:

• AmaWaterways
• Avalon Waterways
• Uniworld Boutique River Cruises
• Emerald Waterways
• Scenic Luxury Cruises & Tours
• American Cruise Lines
• American Queen Voyages
• Grand Circle Cruise Line

As you can see, there is no shortage of companies in the river cruise business. The list above doesn't even include river lines that primarily cater to Europeans, of which there are many, including France-based CroisiEurope and Germany's Nicko Cruises.

On many rivers, the vessels these lines operate are all roughly the same size due to specific size limitations caused by lock sizes and bridge heights. As a result, there is less variation among river ships than there is among ocean ships. That said, the brands above offer a range of experiences and price points.

While the outsides of river ships often look similar, their interiors can vary greatly, with some being more luxurious and pampering than others.

One way to judge the relative luxury level of river lines operating in Europe, in particular, is to look at how many passengers each puts in one of its 135-meter vessels. That's the most common standard river ship size on European waterways due to the lock sizes in Europe.

River cruise giant Viking, for instance, designs its 135-meter vessels to carry 190 passengers. Avalon Waterways and AmaWaterways put 166 and 156 passengers, respectively, on the same-length ships. At Tauck, the number is 130 passengers.

As a rule of thumb, the ships with fewer passengers offer a more premium experience — and are priced accordingly. You'll pay a lot more to sail with Tauck than Viking.

Niche lines

Finally, there are lots of little (and in some cases tiny) cruise lines that I call "niche" lines. These lines offer a specialized product, often with just a handful of ships.

In some cases, these lines only operate in a certain part of the world, such as Alaska or the South Pacific. In other cases, they only cater to a narrow range of people, such as sailing aficionados.

You may end up loving these lines, but you probably won't sail with them all the time — if only because they don't offer all the types of cruises you will want to experience.

Among these lines, I include the following (with its specialty in parentheses):

• Disney Cruise Line (cruises for Disney fans and families)
• Virgin Voyages (cruises for adults without kids looking to let loose)
• Paul Gauguin Cruises (South Pacific cruises)
• Star Clippers (cruises for sailing fans)
• Sea Cloud Cruises (cruises for sailing fans)
• Cunard Line (cruises for ocean liner enthusiasts, Anglophiles and globe-trotters)
• American Cruise Lines (U.S. waterway cruises)
• Alaskan Dream Cruises (Alaska cruises)
• Celestyal Cruises (Greece and Turkey cruises)
• Grand Circle Cruise Line (small-ship sailings)
• Victory Cruise Lines (small-ship sailings on the Great Lakes)

Even the biggest of these lines — Disney — is just one-tenth the size of industry leader Royal Caribbean when measured by passenger capacity. Some of these brands, such as Paul Gauguin Cruises and Alaskan Dream Cruises, are barely 1% the size of the biggest brands.

Paul Gauguin only has a single, 332-passenger ship, Paul Gauguin. It operates a very specialized set of French Polynesian itineraries out of Tahiti to destinations such as Bora Bora and Moorea that draw a lot of honeymooners and couples celebrating anniversaries.

A few of these lines, such as American Cruise Lines and Grand Circle, you will have noticed, were already included in the listings above for river lines. They fit in both categories, as they operate river ships but also some very small oceangoing vessels that offer niche itineraries.

All of these lines are niche players in the industry. But, in many cases, they are well known in the travel world for what they do. Disney may have just five cruise ships — compared with 28 for Royal Caribbean — but if someone says the words "family cruise," Disney will likely be the first line to come to mind.

Star Clippers and Sea Cloud Cruises, which both operate sailing ships, are popular with people who want to experience what it was like traveling in the days before steam power. American Cruise Lines has developed a significant niche offering small-ship trips along U.S. coastal waterways and rivers, including voyages along the coast of Maine, up the Hudson River and in the Chesapeake Bay.

Dating to the 1800s, U.K.-based Cunard is particularly known for its transatlantic sailings between New York and Southampton, England. Operated by the iconic Queen Mary 2, the sailings are a throwback to the days of grand ocean liner travel. Cunard also is known for its annual around-the-world sailings that include stops in dozens of countries.

Bottom line

The cruise industry includes many lines offering a wide range of experiences. No two are exactly alike. If you want to find the right cruise line and ship for you, do your homework in advance. Think hard about the type of vacation experience you want, and read up on the lines and ships that seem the closest fit for your travel style.

This Beloved Luxury Cruise Ship Is Back on the Water — With a Nobu at Sea, a Gorgeous Pool Deck, and a Slate of Epic Itineraries

Beloved brand Crystal Cruises came to an ignominious end during the pandemic. Now, new leadership has revived the line and aims to make it better than ever.

Where serenity sails, shore excursions, amenities and entertainment, family-friendly offerings, accessibility.

Spending a week on Crystal Serenity feels like staying at a resort that families have been visiting for 20 years. On a July cruise in the Mediterranean Sea, most of the passengers I met had sailed on Serenity many times before. Veteran Crystal cruiser Keith Steiner regaled me with stories of the paddle tennis tournament he plays in every year, alongside the crew, on the line’s world cruises. Linda Glenn, who has been on 130 Crystal cruises, promised to show me the beautiful ring her husband, Stanley, commissioned from the jeweler who supplies Serenity ’s boutique. And the Glenns' grandson, Tate, has been sailing on Crystal Serenity since he was two. He’s 19 now.

What’s strange about all this is I met these folks on Crystal Serenity ’s inaugural journey. 

Crystal Serenity

• Crystal Cruises has the only Nobu restaurants at sea. On Serenity, Umi Uma, a Japanese-Peruvian spot by chef Nobu Matsuhisa is one of the best restaurants on board.
• The 740-passenger ship has all ocean-view rooms — and most have balconies — plus 24/7 butler service.
• Crystal Cruises is known for its exceptional world cruises, and Serenity embarks on its first around-the-world tour in 2024.

Here’s what happened: Crystal Serenity first launched in 2003. To put a time stamp on that, Julie Andrews was named the godmother of Serenity , and “The Princess Diaries” had come out two years before. Fast forward 19 years and Crystal went bankrupt in fairly spectacular fashion in early 2022. Seventeen months later, the brand is known simply as Crystal and is a part of A&K Travel Group, the holding company backed by travel luminaries Geoffrey Kent, of Abercrombie & Kent, and Manfredi Lefebvre d’Ovidio, the onetime chairman of Silversea. Since taking the helm, A&K has invested $150 million in Crystal, giving Serenity and sibling ship Crystal Symphony stem-to-stern overhauls. Both ships returned to service in the summer of 2023.

“It’s Crystal enhanced,” Steiner told me, as we sailed from Corsica to Barcelona on a particularly rocky day on the Mediterranean. The retired telecom executive has been on 120 Crystal cruises with his wife, Anne Marie. “Every person we've spoken to would say, from the moment they came on, it feels, it looks, it smells like Crystal. It is Crystal.”

That’s largely because 80 percent of the Crystal Serenity ’s crew is back on board. My butler, Jijo, who had been with Crystal for 17 years before the bankruptcy, knew every one of his guests on that first sailing — I was his only newcomer. Jijo unpacked my suitcase, handled my laundry and my airport transfer, routinely surprised me with an afternoon iced tea, and accompanied me to the IT office when my Wi-Fi went out. When I wasn’t feeling well, he brought me several rounds of chicken consumé, toast, and mint tea as I watched “Top Gun: Maverick” while hiding under Jesurum 1870 bedding. It was, due respect to my husband, even better care than I would’ve gotten back home. 

Here, everything you need to know about the new and improved Crystal Serenity — and what it was like to be one of the first on board.

My 430-square-foot Sapphire Veranda Suite — where I enjoyed my daily iced teas on the balcony, slept phenomenally well on the custom Jesurum 1870 bedding, and reveled in the spaciousness of the shower — was gutted in 2023 and completely redone by cruise ship designer GEM. But A&K, committed to keeping the returning guests happy, left some Sapphire Veranda Suites as they were — including the room Linda Glenn has booked since 2009.

There are no inside accommodations on the 545-room Crystal Serenity — even the entry-level offering has an ocean view. The smallest rooms, at 215 square feet, are the doubles with an ocean view, singles with an ocean view, and doubles with a veranda. Every accommodation comes with 24/7 butler service.

The most luxurious of Serenity' s 377 suites is the 1,275-square-foot Crystal Penthouse. The bathroom — with a full peachflower marble tub — is exquisite, as is the plentiful balcony space. And while most guests get only one reservation at each of the specialty restaurants, Umi Uma and Osteria d’Ovidio, reservations for the penthouse guests are unlimited, and they can order from both directly to their room.

Linda, like most Crystal die-hards, still accidentally calls the Italian restaurant, Osteria D’Ovidio, by its old name, but says the space, overhauled by Tillberg of Sweden, feels completely different. "I think the food's even better," Stanley adds. Umi Uma — one of two Nobus at sea, the other on Crystal Symphony — has brand-new interiors, too. The Umi Uma menu hasn’t changed, which is a relief, because it turns out nothing bonds two people on a ship quite like a shared affinity for Nobu’s black-miso cod and decadent sashimi.

Maya Kachroo-Levine/Travel + Leisure 

With one coveted culinary name already, Cristina Levis, A&K and Crystal Cruises CEO, told me she’s working to “bring home another celebrity chef” for Osteria. (Though, even without a Michelin-touted chef at the helm of Osteria, I loved the lobster acquasale and gnocchi blanketed in porcini mushroom ragout.) The best Italian export on board, however, is served six decks above Osteria at the gelato bar, Scoops. Levis is from a family of gelato makers, and it shows; the stracciatella and coffee gelato I savored on a poolside couch as we sailed from Portofino, Italy, was better than the cone I had in port. 

I also grew very attached to the buffet at Marketplace — it is truly next-level, with a carving station, a great salad bar, some excellent Indian food (who knew you could find phenomenal butter chicken on an Italian-owned ship?), and fresh seafood. I had terrific moules-frites one afternoon, with Rotterdam-sourced mussels in a delicate, garlicky cream sauce, seated outside in the sun, with a beautiful view of Cannes. This is not your average buffet. There’s also the main dining room, Waterside, open for three meals a day; Tastes Kitchen & Bar, with a lovely indoor-outdoor terrace that makes you feel like you’re on the corner of a charming European street; and a grill that does burgers and sandwiches for lunch — and excellent pancakes in the morning.

As for bars, I was partial to the Avenue Saloon — where Joel Spire plays piano every night and there’s a great Manhattan menu. Worth noting, there’s also an extensive non-alcoholic and low-ABV cocktail menu at Avenue Saloon, for those looking for booze-free nightlife.

In 2023, Serenity will sail in North America, along the New England coast in the fall and into Canada, exploring Quebec’s Saint Lawrence River. In the winter, the ship will cruise the Caribbean, stopping in ports like St. Thomas, Grand Cayman, and Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Looking ahead to 2024, the ship will begin a five-continent world cruise — the first since A&K bought Crystal — cruising French Polynesia, Australia, New Zealand, Asia, Africa, South America, and in Europe, winding up in the Mediterranean Sea again next summer. The 2025 lineup was just announced, too; learn more about the sailings here .

As Crystal becomes more ingrained in the A&K family, “we will bring to Crystal what A&K does best, which is the excursions,” Levis said. Starting in 2025, the cruise line intends to roll out packages that let travelers leave the ship for a few days, knock out a once-in-a-lifetime tour, and then hop back on board.

While I had slight FOMO just hearing about travelers slipping off to Machu Picchu for an A&K adventure before rejoining the cruise in Lima, my travel envy dissipated as soon as I went on my first excursion. When we docked in Livorno, Italy, I joined a small group on a truffle-hunting excursion, following a sweet pup, Bianca, through a cluster of oak trees at Vialto Farms, a 1,000-year-old farmhouse in Tuscany. After glasses of cold vermentino, we dug into pasta in a light cream sauce topped with freshly grated truffles, followed by a truffle-covered fried egg. A few days later, on Corsica, a bus whisked a group of us to Domaine Orsini, for a wine tasting and a relaxing stint on the covered patio overlooking the island. And before I disembarked the ship in Barcelona, I crashed an evening excursion to the trendy El Born neighborhood, where our 10-person group shared a barrage of Spanish tortilla, patatas bravas , and croquetas at Tapeo.

The pool deck — in close proximity to the gelato bar – on deck 12 feels like a relaxed, exclusive Mediterranean beach club. One deck up, there’s a fitness center with Technogym equipment and workout classes, plus pickle ball and paddle tennis courts close by. The spa has a gorgeous, light-wood sauna with a picture window — perhaps my favorite place to watch the world go by — and an extensive treatment menu. I was extremely impressed with my dynamic biotech resurfacing facial and noticed the effects of the healing LED blue-light mask, which dissolves dead skin, for a full week after the treatment.

As for the entertainment, while I didn’t stray much from Pete’s piano in the Avenue Saloon, there are standup comedy and musical theater shows at the Stardust Club, Galaxy Lounge, and the Hollywood Theater. Crystal Cove bar is a great spot to catch live music (classical, jazz, piano, and even the occasional rock moment).

Also of note are the educational seminars, held daily, with guest speakers who lecture on upcoming destinations and give in-depth talks into their industries — whether that’s sports, media, or “even the occasional astronaut,” per Crystal’s website.

There is certainly a kids’ club on Serenity and children are welcome. In fact, children grow up on this ship, coming on the holiday cruise every year, and making lifelong friends — as I learned from my friend Tate. Waves and Fantasia are the kids’- and teens’-only spaces on board. Personally, though, I would come on Crystal with a spouse, longterm travel partner, grown-up family members, close friends, or even solo. 

There are eight ADA rooms on Crystal Serenity — some aquamarine veranda suites and some aquamarine ocean-view suites. According to a Crystal spokesperson, the ADA suites "are designed to accommodate guests with additional needs or who are wheelchair bound. The furniture can accommodate a wheelchair or scooter, there is extra space between beds, more room in the living area for easy movement, and the bathroom is larger with a roll-in shower, fold-down shower bench, and easy-to-reach shower head and sink faucet. Additional equipment is available upon request, such as rubber shower mats, shower stools, and a shower bench."

This epic journey showcases the natural beauty and living history of the U.S. from sea to shining sea. The sailing embarks in Portland, Oregon , on the Pacific Coast before traveling east to the Atlantic shore along four major rivers that highlight some of the country's most stunning coastlines. Upon arrival in New York Harbor, guests will have an unforgettable view of one of the most iconic landmarks in the U.S.: the Statue of Liberty .

Viking River Cruises

Viking is no stranger to sailing Europe's rivers; the brand is synonymous with river cruising worldwide aboard its dozens of ships. However, Viking River Cruises is a newcomer to U.S. rivers, with its purpose-built ship: the 386-passenger Viking Mississippi. Looking to carve out its own niche in the American river cruising category, Viking claims it has the region's "first truly modern cruise ship" with its distinct Scandinavian design and expansive top sun deck with an infinity plunge pool.

Viking's mostly all-inclusive fares include a complimentary excursion in each port, destination lectures and performances, beer and wine at meals, free Wi-Fi, specialty coffees and teas, and more. The line offers five itineraries ranging in length from eight to 22 days along the Mighty Mississippi. Pre- and post-cruise extensions can be added to all voyages for an additional expense.

New Orleans & Southern Charms: Round-trip from New Orleans

Length: Eight days Price: Starts at $3,999 per person

If you don't know which Viking Mississippi itinerary to choose, start here. A round-trip voyage from New Orleans is convenient for booking flights and offers an excellent opportunity to extend your stay in NOLA. Six guided tours are included across eight days, from the historic estates of Natchez to Vicksburg National Military Park. A stop in St. Francisville gives you the chance to marvel at some of the 140-plus buildings it has on the National Register of Historic Places.

If you extend your stay in New Orleans, plan to sample the local Creole cuisine and take in some of the city's nightly jazz entertainment. In the morning, grab a beignet and a steaming cup of chicory coffee au lait at the original Café du Monde in the French Market.

Heart of the Delta: New Orleans to Memphis

Length: Nine days Price: Starts at $4,299 per person

Similar to its round-trip New Orleans Southern Charms itinerary, the Heart of the Delta cruise begins in New Orleans and calls on the same five ports, before sailing through the Lower Mississippi and disembarking in Memphis. Enjoy scenic views of the serpentine river route – perhaps with expert commentary or a local cooking demonstration – and then take time to explore the birthplace of the Memphis blues, which is also a center of civil rights history.

2024 dates: In 2024, this cruise is available in February, March, April, May, June and November.

America's Great River: St. Paul to New Orleans

Length: 15 days Price: Starts at $12,999 per person

This Viking voyage sails from St. Paul to New Orleans on a two-week trip that calls on 13 ports with one day of scenic sailing. This itinerary combines the best of Viking's other Mississippi sailings for an all-encompassing Midwestern and Southern experience with 12 guided tours.

Included in the fare is a tour of Graceland; a stroll through small-town Burlington, Iowa, to see Snake Alley, deemed the most crooked street in the world; and a visit to the National Eagle Center of Red Wing, among others. For an additional fee, hop on an airboat ride through the Atchafalaya Swamp in Baton Rouge or tour the Anheuser-Busch Brewery of St. Louis.

2024 dates: Viking has availability for this itinerary in July, September and October.

You may have seen riverboat gambling ships or are at least familiar with riverboat gambling along U.S. waterways. However, while high rolling on the river sounds like an exciting way to spend a night (or two, or more) while on your riverboat cruise, you'll have to jump ship to play the slots, roll the dice, spin the wheel or play a hand of Texas Hold 'em. Gambling on cruise ships sailing on internal waters is prohibited by U.S. law.

Gambling on boats in the U.S. is a complicated matter. While you will find some ships sailing along American waterways that are only set up for gambling, they are not carrying passengers from port to port. Most vessels that feature riverboat gambling are now moored, offering sports betting, table games, entertainment, live music and dancing while tethered to shore.
