Apart from a chance to admire Aurora Borealis' beauty, this tour also features a trip to the Santa Claus Village, reindeer sledding, and snowmobiling, among other amazing experiences.

The vibrant capital of Finland is an unmissable city for anyone who has the scenic country on their travel radar. But do you already know what to do during your Helsinki travel? The city offers so much to explore, that choosing what sights to include on your list of must-see's might be tricky.

Welcome to Helsinki, the marvelous capital of Finland! Your driver meets you at the airport upon arrival and takes you to your centrally located hotel for check-in.

There is nothing planned for the rest of the day, so you can relax in your room, check out one of the cozy local restaurants, or start exploring the nearby attractions on your own.

No meals included.

The next morning after breakfast, you meet your private guide and go on an exciting 4-hour walking tour of Helsinki, covering the best the city can offer.

During the tour, you walk through the lively Central Harbor and Market Square, explore the enchanting Old Town, visit the world-famous Rock Church, and take a short tram ride through the city.

After the sightseeing tour, you return back to your hotel and have the rest of the day free. You can either rest after such an exciting day or join one of our carefully designed optional tours.

Boasting a fantastic location right in the center of the beautiful Finnish capital, this remarkable accommodation is a great option to consider for your Helsinki vacation. It provides comfortable well-equipped guestrooms with LCD TVs, complimentary Wi-Fi, and ensuite bathrooms.

Without a doubt, a plane ride is the fastest and the most comfortable way to travel between the scenic capital of Finland and the fairy tale city of Rovaniemi. One of our local drivers will take you to the airport and meet upon landing.

Rovaniemi, Finland

If there is a truly magical place on Earth, it's the charming city of Rovaniemi. And how else can it be? After all, the official hometown of Santa Claus can't be anything but miraculous!

The following morning, you have breakfast, check out from your hotel, and continue your Finland exploration. Your private driver takes you to the airport for a short flight to Rovaniemi, the motherland of one-and-only Santa Claus (tickets are included). Upon landing, you are transferred to a comfortable boutique hotel in the heart of Rovaniemi for check-in.

There is nothing planned for the rest of the day, so feel free to go and explore the nearby area on your own or check out one of the charming local restaurants.

Get ready for an exciting day! After breakfast, you start with a brief introduction to snowmobiling, after which you enjoy a thrilling ride to a nearby reindeer farm.

• Please, note:  in order to drive a snowmobile please make sure to have your driver's license with you.
• Please, note:  due to unsuitable weather conditions (e.g. if there is no snow or it is raining), a snowmobile ride will be replaced with a visit to the Arktikum Museum.

Upon arrival, you enjoy fascinating stories about the lifestyle of a reindeer herder, go on a 1-hour reindeer ride, and have a chance to set off on exciting husky dog sledding!

After that, you continue your trip to Santa Claus Village where you enjoy a visit to the Snowman World and attend a real ice bar! You can also purchase some interesting local souvenirs and send amazing postcards with a special Arctic Circle stamp from Santa Claus's main post office.

• Please, note:  the Snowman World is open from the beginning of December to the end of March.

After the tour, you go back to the hotel and have the rest of the evening free.

After check-in, you are welcome to explore the Nordic beauty of the surrounding area on your own.

Itinerary – Helsinki and Northern Lights, Igloo Experience (7 days)

Day 1 – helsinki.

Welcome to Finland, the Land of a Thousand Lakes! Your private transfer will take you to your hotel in the city centre upon arrival. Check into your hotel and rest of the day is at leisure. Take a stroll around the vibrant seaside city, the beautiful islands and great green urban areas. Helsinki marches to a wonderful and unique beat of its own with dynamic food, design, architecture – and sauna!

Overnight in the Sokos Presidentti Hotel or similar

Day 2 – HELSINKI

Breakfast at your hotel.  Today you will enjoy a Panoramic tour of Helsinki (shared excursion) – a popular sightseeing tour showing you the most important sights and giving you an excellent view of Helsinki’s past and present. The tour takes you to the most interesting parts of Helsinki, such as the historical centre, City Hall, The Parliament buildings, Finlandia Hall and the Opera House. The bus stops at the Temppeliaukio Church (Rock Church) or at the Sibelius Monument (if the church is closed) for 20 min.

Evening departure to Rovaniemi by train, the Santa Claus Express.

Day 3 – ARRIVAL IN ROVANIEMI

You may order breakfast on board the train (pay locally), on arrival transfer is provided to your hotel to join the ‘Aurora Borealis and Glass Igloo’ tour.

Rovaniemi is the capital of Finnish Lapland and Lapland is as close as it gets to reality for those who dream of a winter wonderland. Lapland is the place of contrasts, where 24-hour sunlight in the summer replaces the dark winter days and the hustle and bustle of towns is just minutes away from the peace and quiet of the wild wilderness.

Day 4 – SANTA’S VILLAGE & REINDEER SLED RIDE

After breakfast at the hotel, you will start your day by immersing yourself into the magic of Lapland. First stop today is Santa Claus Village located on the Arctic Circle. You will participate in the traditional ceremony of crossing the Arctic Circle and receive a diploma certifying your visit.

After the ceremony, you will experience a reindeer sled at the Santa Claus Village and enjoy a hot drink around the fire. After the reindeer sled, there is free time for you to explore the village and meet the local star, Santa Claus , in his official home. Free time for lunch.

You can also visit Santa’s post office to send a letter to yourself or to a loved one, with the official stamp of Santa. Browse the souvenir shops and enjoy the magic atmosphere in the village.

Day 5 – HUSKIES & THE POLAR ZOO OF RANUA

Breakfast in the hotel.

Our first stop today is a Husky Farm, where you will learn all you need to know about huskies and their way of living. After the introduction, take a ride on a mini husky safari (3 km) with a musher. After the ride you will have some time to meet and photograph these beautiful dogs and ask all the questions you may have with regards to the huskies and their role in Arctic life.

Free time for lunch (not included)

Our next visit is to the Northern-most zoo in the world, Ranua. Your guide will take you on a brisk walk outdoors to admire the Arctic wildlife in their genuine wilderness setting. elk, reindeer, wolverines, arctic fox and of course the impressive polar bear can be found in this Zoo.

Afterwards there is enough free time for chocolate lovers to visit the shop of the famous Finnish Fazer chocolates.

Return to your hotel.

Day 6 – ROVANIEMI – NIGHT IN A GLASS IGLOO

Today is at leisure for you to enjoy Rovaniemi and its surroundings! Why not discover the magnificent Arktikum museum and learn about the Sami, the original people of Lapland. Another option is to enjoy one of the many activities offered in the area. Aurora borealis snowmobile safari (3 hrs).

Experience the Arctic night riding through the snow-covered forest and on the frozen river. With a little luck, you’ll travel under a bright sky lit by the moon and the stars. Perhaps the Aurora Borealis – the Northern Lights – will appear to show you the way. Sip warm beverages and savour a snack by a campfire and learn more about the Northern Lights and the beauty of Lapland. Each snowmobile is shared by two guests taking turns in driving.

NOTES: The driver of the snowmobile has to be at least 18 years of age with a driver’s license valid in Finland. Please remember to bring your driving license with you. Driving a motorized vehicle under the influence of alcohol or intoxicating drugs is prohibited by the laws of Finland. Child price entitles children to a seat in a sled pulled by a snowmobile driven by the guide. Children over 140 cm in height are allowed to sit on the snowmobile behind an adult, when paying the adult price. Lapland Safaris AC Ltd reserves the right to deny the participation of small children due to safety reasons (e.g. demanding weather or trail conditions). AURORA BOREALIS PICNIC (3 hrs)

The Northern Lights, also known as Aurora Borealis, are to be observed only in the Polar zone of the world. Our location on the Arctic Circle gives us the best possibilities to try and see them. Our guide will drive you out of the city, reaching the perfects spots offering us the best open sky vision. Here we enjoy our Lappish picnic, hopefully under the Auroras!  If we are not lucky enough to see them, its still a fun event!  Transfers by car or bus.

SNOWMOBILE SAFARI (2 hrs) 2 persons per snowmobile

This snowmobile adventure offers a fantastic opportunity to learn how to master the art of driving a snowmobile and to explore the snowy expanse! During the safari, we stop for a break to enjoy hot drinks with biscuits in the silence of the white wilderness.

NOTES: Each person driving a snowmobile must be at least 18 years old and hold a valid driving license (B). Please remember to bring your driving license with you. Two persons per snowmobile. For groups of 3 persons or other odd number of people, we highly recommend purchasing one single driver supplement. The snowmobile driver is held liable for any damages caused to the vehicle. Personal self-liability is maximum €900/person/snowmobile/in case of accident. By purchasing a €15 self-liability insurance before the start of the safari, you reduce the amount of self-liability down to a maximum of €150/person/snowmobile/in case of accident. Self-liability insurance is personal and valid for one snowmobile safari. Children 0-14 years old are seated in a sledge behind the guide’s snowmobile. We highly recommend one of the parents to sit with their small child in the sledge, for the child’s comfort and safety.

Come and experience the lightness of your body during the arctic ice floating! Don’t fear the cold as you are totally protected with high quality rescue suit. Let your body and mind float, enjoy this frozen adventure. This guided adventure is safe with a high-quality rescue suit that covers your whole body and keeps you dry. As you have your own clothing under the suit you will not get cold even in the open 0-degree water. Lying down in the frozen lake between the ice blocks is something worth trying, the circumstances truly are arctic!

Guests joining the 14-day trip in Stockholm with overnight ferry to Helsinki will get to see many of Stockholm’s main sights and with our local expert guide as well as have plenty of free-time to explore this stunning city. Day 1 / sat 1st/ sun 16th feb 2025 – start stockholm.

Welcome to Stockholm! After our Welcome Drink and Welcome Meeting to meet your fellow travelers, we head down into the heart of the beautiful “Gamla Stan” (Old Town) of Stockholm for a Welcome Dinner including drinks at a cosy Swedish restaurant to get to know your fellow travelling companions. Day 2 / Sun 2nd / Mon 17th Feb 2025 – STOCKHOLM SIGHTSEEING

This morning with local guide, a city tour including visit to the imposing City Hall with its Golden Room where the annual Nobel Prize presentation gala banquet occurs. Then to the medieval heart of the city to see the Cathedral and the Royal Palace. Free-time to explore pretty “Gamla Stan” – the old town and it’s shopping streets. Day 3 / Mon 3rd / Tues 18th Feb 2025 – STOCKHOLM to OVERNIGHT CRUISE to HELSINKI

Today we visit the Museum housing the incredible Vasa Galleon, which sunk on its maiden voyage in the 1600’s and not rediscovered in the archipelago until the 20th C. Then free-time to perhaps visit the delightful “Skansen” zoo and open-air museum, ABBA Museum or new “Vikingaliv” Viking Museum. We then head down to the port to board our overnight cruise to Helsinki. Departing in the late afternoon, we cruise out of the world’s most beautiful archipelago on our well-appointed overnight ferry to Finland.                                (BB)

A late morning flight heading north to land in Rovaniemi located right on the Arctic Circle and the capitol of Finnish Lapland. First up we visit a reindeer farm where we get up-close-and-personal with the “locals” before learning all about these fascinating creatures in a warm cabin by fireside. Next up a visit to the fascinating Arktikum Museum and Science center before settling into our hotel here in the capitol of Lapland.  Dinner included in the hotel before time to explore the lively bars and pubs of this lively Arctic Circle city.                (BB,D)

Departing our hotel we head to  the nearby “Santa Claus Village” considered by many to be his traditional home. Reindeer sleigh-rides into the forest before time to explore this Christmas Wonderland and perhaps arrange letters from Santa to be sent to friends back home to arrive for next Christmas! Lunch-stop on the highway heading north of the Arctic Circle to reach incredible Kakslauttanen Arctic Resort near Saariselkä ski area. After a guided orientation of this impressive winter resort, time for included dinner before settling into your unique, glass “igloo’s” (and fingers-crossed, to gaze at northern lights overhead from your inclinable bed!)                              (BB, D)

We head straight to the famous Sorrisniva Resort where we have a highlight stay for the night in their amazing Ice Hotel, the biggest and most northerly ice hotel in the world. An included drink in the Ice Bar, time to explore this unique resort and ice-hotel before an included highlight three-course dinner. Try the outdoor spa searching for northern lights before preparing for a night in ice-rooms (which stay at a constant -4C inside!). The chance to upgrade to River Rooms in their brand new and stunning Wilderness Lodge for those who prefer to sleep in the hotel.                                                 (BB, HD)

  This morning, free-time to explore the Resort, perhaps try complimentary snow-shoeing out onto the frozen Alta River.  We then take an exhilarating 2.5hr snow-mobiling adventure up through forests onto the beautiful nearby plateau. Aurora Light Shows Could Brighten Up Skies All Week: Where to Watch Them

O n Friday and Saturday nights, viewers from San Francisco to Tasmania were treated to amazing auroras in the night sky. One of the  biggest geomagnetic storms in decades  may continue tonight and even through the week, according to the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration's Space Weather Prediction Center .

"At least five Earth-directed coronal mass ejections were observed and expected to arrive as early as midday Friday, May 10, 2024, and persist through Sunday, May 12, 2024," the center noted. "Several strong flares have been observed over the past few days and were associated with a large and magnetically complex sunspot cluster, which is 16 times the diameter of Earth."

In most cases, geomagnetic storms cause little to no disruption on Earth , with radio communications and satellites affected most often. In extreme cases, a geomagnetic storm can cause significant and potentially life-threatening power outages, as well as problems with satellite systems and radio communications.

"Geomagnetic storms can impact infrastructure in near-Earth orbit and on Earth's surface, potentially disrupting communications, the electric power grid, navigation, radio and satellite operations," NOAA said, adding that representatives of the center have notified the operators of these systems so they can take protective action. 

The Washington Post notes that "anyone using high-frequency radio in the aurora viewing zone may experience some disruptions," but also reports that most people will not be affected or need to take any special precautions beyond those they'd take with any storm that could knock out power.

Since consumer wireless networks use different radio frequencies, CNN notes that your phone is unlikely to be affected. Severe geomagnetic storms could affect the power grid, but wireless carriers generally have backups and can deploy mobile cellular towers.

In most cases, geomagnetic storms also present unique opportunities to see auroras in the night sky. When the storms hit, the plasma they carry creates  a jaw-dropping aurora , illuminating the night sky with brilliant colors. Those auroras can be especially pronounced during the most intense phases of the storm, making for nice stargazing.

Where can you see these aurora borealis light shows?

"Geomagnetic storms can also trigger spectacular displays of aurora on Earth," the NOAA said . "A severe geomagnetic storm includes the potential for aurora to be seen as far south as Alabama and Northern California."

NOAA has created some (experimental) viewlines for watching the auroras, as well as a 30-minute aurora forecast that shows the last 24 hours of activity.

Does it seem like you can never see a hyped aurora where you live ? Bill Murtagh, program coordinator at NOAA's Space Weather Prediction Center, talked to CNET about this very issue back in 2022. Murtagh compared it to a popular outdoor hobby that also takes a lot of patience -- fishing.

"You might be out hunting it for hours on end," he told me, "and then, the perfect storm of events comes along, and you finally see it."

He also noted that city dwellers are at a disadvantage due to light pollution, which is pretty much exactly what it sounds like, the brightening of the night sky in the city, caused by streetlights and other sources. That inhibits our ability to see stars and planets.

But say you get in the car and drive out of your city or suburb to a rural area with no streetlights. There's another element that's out of your control -- the weather. Cloudy conditions can roll over any state at any time, making aurora sightings even tougher to predict.

Many people travel to Alaska or northern countries just in the hope of seeing, and photographing, an aurora. Murtagh recommended Anchorage, Fairbanks, Yukon, Helsinki and northern Scandinavia. There are even trip planners now who organize tours around hoping to see the aurora.
