Trek’s Newest E-Mountain Bike is Light, Fast, and Sporty

An adventurous pedal-assist bike, the E-Caliber has the heart of a cross-country racer.

The Takeaway: The Trek E-Caliber is a lightweight, XC-oriented electric mountain bike for riders who want a nimble and agile machine that excels on a wide range of trails.

  • Trek claims the 34.8-pound E-caliber 9.9 XX1 AXS is the lightest full-suspension eMTB.
  • 60mm carbon frame, 120mm fork, and aggressive geometry
  • Fazua Evation pedal-assist motor can be removed for unassisted riding

Price: $11,999 Weight: 36 lb. (size Large)

A light and efficient 60mm carbon frame, cross country-oriented geometry, a 120mm fork, and...a Fazua Evation pedal assist motor?

Old Man Winter has been very uncooperative this month, leaving much of my trails buried deep beneath the snow . But as I write this, the sun is shining, snow is melting, and I’m optimistic that it won’t be long before I can hit the trails for some more substantial rides.

Lightweight rear suspension offers great pedaling efficiency.

The E-Caliber was borne from Trek’s full-suspension XC racer, the Supercaliber . The Fazua Evation motor neatly integrated in the downtube gives riders three levels of pedal assist. Besides being very light (7.4 pounds on my scale), the battery and drive system are removable and can be replaced with a dummy battery that doubles as a storage compartment, leaving me with a 28-pound (for size Large) bike that should pedal like a non-electric bike.

Class 1 Fazua Evation Motor

The Fazua Evation motor is powered by a 250-Wh battery with a claimed range of 18 to 50 miles. As with all e-bikes, that depends heavily on what mode you use, how much you weigh, and how hilly the terrain is. The more power you demand, the quicker the battery drains.

That motor itself represents a departure for Trek, as we’re more accustomed to seeing bikes from the Wisconsin-based brand with Bosch’s stellar Performance Line CX motor. Ott attributed that move to the new Black Pepper Tune, “which we felt took a good bike and made it a great bike for us,” he said, because it refines power delivery over a broader cadence range. Ott also told me the new tune improved responsiveness, making the pedal assist engage sooner.

The system has three power modes with very Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance names. Breeze is the economy mode and gives riders a constant 100 watts of help. River provides progressive assistance where the motor’s software attempts to match the amount of assist with what you’re putting into the pedals, but only up to 210 watts. The full gas mode is called Rocket, which gives riders an extra 250 watts regardless of how much effort they put into the pedals. But because this is a Class 1 e-bike , additional power cuts out when speed tops 20 miles per hour regardless of mode.

trek e caliber

Fazua plans to release an app in April that will give riders complete freedom to customize the power curve in all levels of assist.

The E-Caliber retains the IsoStrut single-pivot suspension design from the Supercaliber, giving the bike just 60mm of rear wheel travel and exceptionally low weight due to the lack of pivots and linkage. But things change on the front end to handle the extra speed and hard riding the motor adds to the equation. Front suspension goes up to 120mm, giving the bike a more adventurous feel like the Cannondale Scalpel SE and Specialized Epic EVO . Head angle is kicked out to 67.5 degrees, the result of bumping travel up by 20mm. That’s still aggressive by trail standards but within the realm of modern XC geometry like we see on the Scalpel, Specialized Epic , and BMC Twostroke 01 . Reach got longer than the Supercaliber’s, in this case by 15mm (440mm for a Large).

Those three changes represent the main geometry differences between the E-Caliber and its analog sibling. As with other bikes that get the longer/lower/slacker treatment, the idea was to add stability at high speed and make the bike handle better on rougher terrain.

Where Does This Bike Fit In?

Mid-travel e-bikes have proven to be great options for a wide range of uses, not the least of which are shuttling enduro runs, ripping flow trails, and making any hard, mountainous trail more accessible to riders who have less than professional-level fitness. However, those bikes can quickly lose their appeal for riders who enjoy taking a more active role in piloting because the heavy frames, big tires, and longer travel have a way of letting you steamroll over obstacles. The E-Caliber is still a 36-pound bike, which, while light for an electric mountain bike, is hefty. I don’t expect it to behave exactly like my XC bike that weighs 30 percent less, but I’ll be looking very carefully to see if it holds onto the spirit of that style of riding. I’m cautiously optimistic that the combination of short travel, light weight, and aggressive geometry will make for a bike that opens up the joys of long trail adventures and ripping fast singletrack to a segment of riders that may not otherwise get to experience that thrill.

E-Caliber Family

The E-Caliber is available in five models priced from $6,499 for the E-Caliber 9.6 all the way to $12,499 for the range-topping, jaw-dropping, 34.8 pound E-Caliber 9.9 XX1 AXS. All models share the same full-carbon, 60mm frame with a 120mm fork. Interestingly, the top-tier 9.9 XTR and 9.9 XX1 AXS builds do not come with dropper posts. That’s disappointing, but it’s a move we often see on new XC bikes, where droppers are omitted for the sake of keeping the weight as low as possible. As ubiquitous as dropper posts are these days, it feels like an artificial way to claim a lower weight. If you’d like a dropper stock on your bike, look to any of the three lower priced options. You can also add a dropper to any of the higher priced models through Trek's Project One options.

trek e caliber

The cheapest (still $6,499) E-Caliber, the 9.6, features a drivetrain that’s a mix of Shimano XT and Deore, with a 120mm RockShox Gold fork and Bontrager Kovee Comp wheels. For $7,999 the E-Caliber 9.8 gives you Bontrager Kovee Pro carbon wheels, a 120mm RockShox SID Select+ fork and the choice of either a SRAM GX or Shimano XT drivetrain. The next jump is a steep one: an extra $3,500 nets you the E-Caliber 9.9 XTR with a 120mm Fox Factory 34 SC fork and Bontrager Kovee XXX Carbon wheels. The top spot is reserved for riders willing to plunk down 12,499 bones for a dreamy bike, the E-Caliber 9.9 XX1 AXS, resplendent with SRAM’s wireless shifting and a 120mm RockShox Sid Ultimate fork.

E-Caliber 9.8 XT is a lightweight carbon electric mountain bike that rides-and looks-like a traditional cross country bike. It's built with the same race-worthy tech as Supercaliber, including our exclusive IsoStrut integrated shock, and it has a sleek Fazua drive system that delivers a little boost when you want it most. It's right for you if… You're an avid XC rider, and love the idea of an e-MTB that helps you push your limits without providing too much assistance. It's also great for those who want to get out and ride more, or keep pace with faster friends. The tech you get A lightweight OCLV Mountain Carbon frame with 60mm of travel, a 120mm RockShox SID Select+ fork, and Trek IsoStrut shock. A new Fazua Ride Trail 50 and 250Wh battery that can assist up to 20 mph when it's on, and gives zero drag when it's off. A Shimano XT drivetrain, Bontrager Line Elite dropper post, and Kovee Pro 30 carbon wheels with a 108-tooth Rapid Drive rear hub for instant engagement. The final word E-Caliber flies down singletrack like an XC MTB-because it's modeled after Supercaliber! And the Fazua assist is awesome for riders who are looking for just a little advantage that'll help them do even more of what they love. Why you'll love it: - You get a helping hand from the motor on climbs and long rides, but it's a more natural-feeling assist that gives you an overall experience that's closer to riding an analog bike than a typical e-MTB - The drive system, including the motor, is easily removable. Just take it out, pop on the included cover, and you'll have a standard mountain bike that weighs 2.9kg less than before - IsoStrut gives you just enough rear suspension for cross country traction and comfort with less weight and more efficiency - Pivotless seat stays save on weight and actively bend to help soak up trail chatter - Wider Kovee Pro 30 wheels provide better tire support so you can run lower pressure and get more traction

Jun 2023 · Danny Milner

The last time we rode the Trek Rail we awarded it our 2021 E-Bike of the Year crown in the shop bought category. Since then we haven’t had another chance to ride one, mainly because they’ve been flying off the shop floor. Meanwhile, Trek hasn’t rested on its laurels – the front triangle has been lengthened and the extra space used to stuff in Bosch’s biggest 750Wh battery on all but the smallest frame size. So how does it perform and is it one of the best electric mountain bikes on offer? Need to know: Mino link on the seatstay/rocker interface gives high and low geometry settings – useful if you want to run a 27.5in rear wheel Knock Block steering limiter uses interlocking stem and headset spacers, while steerer tube gets oversize 1.8in taper Top tube System controller and wireless remote are available to buy aftermarket, but they should come as standard M, L, and XL frames get 750Wh battery, while S gets a 625Wh This updated Rail is called the Gen 4, but you can still buy the old Gen 3 model. It gets the smaller 625Wh battery, non-Smart System-compatible electronics and a shorter reach. Although buying the Gen 4 seems like a no-brainer, the new large frame is a really big bike, with a 490mm reach and a yawning 35mm gap to the medium. So some riders may achieve a better fit on the old Gen 3. It’s disappointing that Trek hasn’t fitted the latest Bosch System Controller (as found on the Mondraker) to the top tube. Instead you get a measly blanking plate. To enjoy the improved integration and reduced clutter you’ll have to fork out an extra £1,600 for the next model up, which seems pretty stingy. Suspension Trek claims the Rail delivers 150mm travel, but we only measured 140mm (3mm less than the last Rail we tested). However, we didn’t notice this shortcoming on the trail, mostly because the long wheelbase of the Rail gives it excellent stability at high speeds on rough ground. Where we found it wanting was in terms of grip and sensitivity. It struggled to trace smaller bumps, so not only did it lack some comfort on long rides, but it needed more effort to hold a line on off-cambers, through slow turns, and in the wet. Having said that, there’s plenty of support, so as long as we had the energy, we could ride the Rail like a runaway train. Our bike came with a RockShox Zeb in place of the advertised Domain RC. With 38mm stanchions it perfectly matches the hench proportions of the Rail frame, but it wasn’t the smoothest or most supple fork on test. In that respect there was a symbiosis between the Trek’s front and rear suspension, even if it wasn’t quite the fairytale relationship we’d hoped for. Components Trek proffers two brake specs on the Rail 9.7 – Shimano Deore or SRAM Code R, both in four-piston guise. Given the choice, we’d take the Shimano …Continue reading »

Trek E-Caliber 9.8 XT

Trek E-Caliber 9.8 XT

E-Caliber 9.8 XT is a lightweight carbon electric mountain bike that rides—and looks—like a traditional cross country bike. It's built with the same race-worthy tech as Supercaliber, including our exclusive IsoStrut integrated shock, and it has a sleek Fazua drive system that delivers a little boost when you want it most. It's right for you if... You're an avid XC rider, and love the idea of an e-MTB that helps you push your limits without providing too much assistance. It's also great for those who want to get out and ride more, or keep pace with faster friends. The tech you get A lightweight OCLV Mountain Carbon frame with 60mm of travel, a 120mm RockShox SID Select+ fork, and Trek IsoStrut shock. A Fazua Evation motor and 250Wh battery that can assist up to 20 mph when it's on, and gives zero drag when it's off. A Shimano XT drivetrain, Bontrager Line Elite dropper post, and Kovee Pro 30 carbon wheels with a 108-tooth Rapid Drive rear hub for instant engagement. The final word E-Caliber flies down singletrack like an XC MTB—because it's modeled after Supercaliber! And the Fazua assist is awesome for riders who are looking for just a little advantage that'll help them do even more of what they love. Why you'll love it - You get a helping hand from the motor on climbs and long rides, but it's a more natural-feeling assist that gives you an overall experience that's closer to riding an analog bike than a typical e-MTB - The drive system, including the motor, is easily removable.

First ride review: 2020 Trek Rail 9.8 – the lightest Bosch equipped full-sus eMTB?

trek e bike 9.8

The 2020 Trek Rail is the successor to the popular Trek Powerfly LT eMTB. Although the new Rail looks very similar to the Powerfly LT, a lot has changed, which the American brand has aimed to emphasise with the change in name. We had the exclusive opportunity to test ride the bike in Italy.

trek e bike 9.8

“Let’s go railing”: with the 2020 Trek Rail, the name says it all. The frame of the new Rail is based on the Slash enduro bike and its modern geometry promises to offer maximum fun on the trail. It relies on many of Trek’s proven technologies and, of course, the new Bosch Performance CX motor with a removable, 625 Wh internal Bosch Powertube battery.

trek e bike 9.8

The new Rail is available either with an aluminium or carbon frame (from the Rail 9.7 and up), featuring 150 mm rear travel, a 160 mm fork, and going against the mixed wheel size trend, it rolls on big 29×2.6″ tires front and rear. The prices range from € 4,499 for the Rail 5 to € 11,999 for the Rail 9.9.

Geometry, suspension, design, integration and wheel sizes – what’s new about the 2020 Trek Rail?

By changing the name to “Rail” Trek are emphasising the re-alignment of the successor to Powerfly LT. True to the motto “Ride Bikes. Have fun. Feel good.” the American brand promises improved trail performance, more range, more power and an integrated design with clever details.

trek e bike 9.8

The previous Powerfly LT was the long-travel (LT) version of the Powerfly, which was aimed more towards XC or backcountry riding. Accordingly, it could never completely hide its tame character. The design of the new, 2020 Trek Rail is based on the Trek Slash, completely revamping its geometry and making it more capable and aggressive. The chainstays were shortened by 27 mm (to 448 mm), the reach grew by 11 to 27 mm depending on the frame size, the head angle has become 1.5° slacker (64.5°) and the bottom bracket has been dropped by 19 mm. This is with the Mino Link geometry adjustment in the low position, which lets you adjust the Rail’s geometry slightly.

trek e bike 9.8

The 19 mm increased BB drop compared to the Powerfly LT incidentally also has to do with the larger 29×2.6″ tires, since the previous Powerfly LT came with 27.5+ tires.

trek e bike 9.8

For the suspension, Trek have changed the position of the main pivot point to improve the pedalling performance and also to make the suspension’s leverage ratio more progressive for more aggressive riding. Also, Trek now spec their RockShox Deluxe RT3 RE:aktiv shock with Thru-Shaft technology on the Rail 9 (but not the 9.7), 9.8 and 9.9, promising maximum control and traction in rough terrain. Whereas the oil usually gets pressurised in an internal chamber to compensate for the decreased volume caused by the compression of the shock piston, Thru Shaft technology allows the piston to move through the shock. With the reduction in pressure, the breakaway force is reduced and allows the shock to respond more sensitively. Of course, the Rail also features Trek’s ABP (Active Braking Pivot), making the suspension remain active under braking

trek e bike 9.8

“R.I.B.” – Removable Integrated Battery – is what Trek call their unique solution to integrating the battery, as first presented on the 2019 Powerfly LT. The R.I.B. performed just as convincingly on the new Rail, offering a high-quality, tactile feel, ease of use and a convenient carry-handle. You can remove the battery without tools from the side of the down tube where it is much less exposed to mud. This also leaves enough room in the front triangle to fit a bottle cage. The battery cover and the Bosch PowerTube battery are one unit, but they can easily be screwed apart and Trek sell colour-matching battery covers if you want to use a second battery.

trek e bike 9.8

To keep the proportions of the frame and fork similar, German brand BULLS opted to use a 1.8” steerer tube standard on their new Sonic Evo AM 6 Carbon 2020 . Trek took a much simpler but equally effective approach: instead of changing the size of the steerer tube they simply had the size of the fork crown increased, which achieved the same effect visually. Technically, this solution is said to be more than stiff enough.

trek e bike 9.8

An overview of the 2020 Trek Rail range: spec, sizes, availability and our recommendations

The pricing of the Trek Rail range starts at € 4,499 for the Rail 5 and tops out at € 11,999 for the flagship Rail 9.9. The Trek Rail comes specced with RockShox suspension across the range, as well as four-piston brakes for precise and reliable braking performance, and 12-speed drivetrains with 11-50t or 10-50t wide-range cassettes. Apart from the flagship Rail 9.9, all models come with a Bosch Purion display. The flagship model features a Bosch Kiox display mounted on the top tube.

trek e bike 9.8

Only selected models feature the best in terms of tires and rear suspension: the Trek Rail 9 (not the 9.7), 9.8 and 9.9 come with the new rear shock featuring Thru-Shaft technology. The same applies to the robust and grippy Bontrager SE5 Team Issue TLR enduro tires.

trek e bike 9.8

The € 6,499 Trek Rail 9.7 is the most affordable carbon-framed option and costs the same as the Rail 9. The Rail 9 has an aluminium frame but comes with better, more performance-oriented components. The advantages of the aluminium Rail are obvious: apart from small differences in cockpit, saddle and grips, it has the same high-end components as the carbon 9.8 model we tested. If you must have a carbon frame, you could buy the 9.7 – but we would recommend the much better specced Rail 9.8. The extra € 700 is worth the gain in performance. CORRECTION: There was a mistake in Trek’s original press material stating that the 9.7 has a 500 Wh battery and that’s what we wrote in this paragraph as a negative point. But the good news is that the 9.7 model actually comes with a 625 Wh battery. Only the Rail 5 comes with a 500 Wh battery.

The 2020 Trek Rail 9.8 on the trail

As part of the exclusive Trek launch in Italy, we had the opportunity to be one of the first to ride the new Trek Rail. The Rail 9.8 we reviewed costs € 7,199 and weighs 22.1 kg in size M. This makes it one of the lightest full-suspension eMTBs featuring the new Bosch motor and 625 Wh battery that we’ve ever ridden.

trek e bike 9.8

Precise, experienced and reliable not only describes the way our Italian waiter prepared our lunch, but also the new Trek Rail 9.8 on the trail: “It rides as if on rails” describes the Rail to a tee. Thus, the new bike feels unfazed and rather inconspicuous no matter how wild the trails get, mastering every kind of terrain. Composure is the name of the game. The Rail impresses with its very calm, well-balanced handling and plush suspension.

trek e bike 9.8

If you’re looking for a bike to ride rough and high-speed trails, you’ll find what you’re looking for here – the Rail swallows up all irregularities on the trail and instils you with the confidence to charge on, especially if you’ve got more of a passive riding style. If you’ve got an active riding style and like tight corners, the new Trek Rail will require a little more energy and body language to throw around despite its light weight. The fact that Trek rely on large 29×2.6″ tires rather than mixed wheel sizes (as most manufacturers currently do) can be felt in the slightly sluggish and cumbersome handling. The benefits? Better rollover characteristics in the rough. The Bontrager SE5 Team Issue tires are good on hard-packed trails, but on loose surfaces, they reach their limits.

trek e bike 9.8

As we found in our review of the Bosch Performance CX motor , it makes a kind of rattling noise that sounds like chain-slap. Besides this, the distance between the chain and the chainstay on the Trek Rail is minimal – it would have been nice if they could have dropped the chainstay some more and stuck on a modern, ribbed chainstay protector.

trek e bike 9.8

Compared to the previous Powerfly LT, the new Rail has become more precise and confidence-inspiring on the descents thanks to the more progressive suspension, the 2.6″ tires and new geometry. The climbing performance is equally impressive thanks to the central riding position and the 75° seat tube angle. The Rail transfers every bit of the very natural feeling power delivered by the new Bosch motor onto the trail, the front wheel sticks to the ground no matter how steep the incline – thanks to the longish 448 mm chainstays and the central riding position!

trek e bike 9.8

The R.I.B. battery integration not only looks very stylish, but it also feels very secure and makes a high-quality impression as you remove it. We’re yet to see a better solution for integrating the battery on a Bosch equipped bike! The same applies to the cap of the charging port in the seat tube.

trek e bike 9.8

At € 7,199 the Trek Rail 8.9 isn’t a bargain, but we think the price is fair considering the sensible and excellently performing spec. It should be noted that our test bike had Shimano-Saint brakes instead of the four-piston Shimano SLX brakes it comes with as standard, as the latter weren’t available at the time of testing.

The name says it all! With the new Rail, Trek have created a high-quality, versatile and good-natured eMTB for those who like to point and shoot! The handling is very calm and composed but less active. Technical features such as the battery integration and the finer details are very convincing, testifying to the bike’s quality and the level of thought that the American brand has put into it! And with the new Rail, Trek are finally offering an eMTB in their Project One program. We’re curious to see how it performs against the 2020 competition and are looking forward to some more thorough testing!

Drone company DJI unveils new electric bike brand Amflow

Avatar for Micah Toll

After teasing the launch of its first two-wheeled product, the drone and camera powerhouse DJI has now unveiled an electric mountain bike under the Amflow brand. Take a look at the new Amflow PL, powered by DJI’s own new drive system.

Amflow is described as a new electric mountain bike brand incubated by DJI and is responsible for the eMTB’s ultra-light carbon fiber frame design.

The e-bike’s motor is all DJI. As the company explained, “DJI’s long history of R&D in motor, battery technology, and software development drove the creation of the DJI Avinox Drive System, which powerfully combines torque, battery capacity, 2-inch OLED touchscreen, remote controls, and a charger/supercharger.”

trek e bike 9.8

According to the company, the motor system includes a compound planetary gearset that helps it provide its “industry-leading power-to-size ratio.”

The 600 Wh battery is quite svelte, too, weighing just 2.9 kg (6.3 lb), with the entire bike tipping the scales at a lightweight 19.2 kg (42 lb). Sure, that’d be a chunky normal mountain bike, but it’s quite an easy lift for an eMTB.

An 800 Wh battery is also available, as is a 500W fast charger that can send the bike from 0-75% charge level in just 1.5 hours.

trek e bike 9.8

That DJI Avinox mid-drive motor is said to output 850W of peak power in standard riding modes and up to 1,000W in Boost Mode (despite the cute little sticker reading “250W”). Perhaps even more impressive though is the torque. The Avinox is said to provide 105 Nm of torque that jumps up to 120 Nm of torque in Boost Mode.

Among other ride modes is Auto Mode, that adapts assistance in real-time based on surface conditions and riding position.

“As engineers with a passion for mountain biking, we have seen a lot of tech innovation that has never found its way into the eMTB scene,” said Peter Archer, Amflow Senior Product Specialist at Amflow. “We have married our tech expertise with our passion and today we’re introducing Amflow to the mountain biking community with our very first product, the Amflow PL. We believe this is a significant moment for the eMTB industry with innovative technology and ultra-light material combining to turn any terrain into a wonderland of possibilities for eMTB riders.”

trek e bike 9.8

The Avinox drive system uses a 2-inch OLED full-color control built-in touchscreen display that also functions as the interactive center of the system. Riders can connect their smartphones via the Avinox app to access a range of smart features, including bike security, data recording and sharing, assist parameter adjustments, and real-time bike status checking. The system is tech savvy enough to include “innovative dual Wireless Controllers with Bluetooth connectivity for added convenience and a clutter-free handlebar setup.”

As much as we’ve learned about DJI’s new motor system, we still don’t know much about the bike itself, other than that it apparently has a super lightweight carbon fiber frame.

With any luck, we’ll learn more about the bike’s details soon. But suffice it to say that DJI has come out swinging with its first e-bike drive system, ready to shake up the status quo that typically sees German mid-drive motors on high-end bikes competing against Chinese mid-drives on more affordable options. With DJI’s design prowess, Chinese mid-drives might be heading for higher end e-bikes near you.
