June is one of the rainiest months of the year in the west of Cuba and the capital city of Havana, with the east of the island also experiencing a lot of rain and even hotter temperatures. However, most mornings see remarkably clear and bright weather that is perfect for enjoying high temperatures on the beach, and most afternoon storms will have passed by the evening.  

Temperature

Temperatures in Cuba in June can reach up to 31 ºC during the day, and drop down to about 22ºC in the evenings. Humidity tends to be quite high throughout the month, which is partly due to the thunderstorms which often gather and hit in the afternoons. 

The best time to enjoy the warmth and sunshine in Cuba is in the early morning and evening, whereas the middle of the day is better spent inside somewhere that has air conditioning.

Sea Temperature

Sea temperatures in June are some of the highest that Cuba has all year, with an average water temperature of 28 ºC. These are ideal conditions for swimming, but make sure that you are not in the water during heavy rain or thunderst orms as this can be dangerous. 

Clouds and Rainfall

Visiting Cuba in June, you are likely to experience at least a couple of rainy days during your stay. Rainfall in the island’s wet season however usually tends to happen in short, heavy bursts and can provide pleasant relief from the humid heat. During the afternoon it is likely to be overcast and cloudy as the rain sweeps in, but you should have clear skies and sunshine in the mornings most days. 

Whilst June is the start of Cuba’s hurricane season, the country usually only experiences one prolonged storm during the month and hurricanes rarely hit the island as early as June.

Sunshine Hours

There are eight hours of sunshine a day in Cuba in June, which is slightly less than the previous month. The sun tends to rise at around 6.45 am in the morning and then set around 8.15 pm in the evening, so you will have plenty of hours of light to enjoy the island. 

When out in the sunshine ensure that you are wearing suncream for protection from the high UV rays, and stay in the shade or air-conditioned buildings during the hottest parts of the day.

Where to go in Cuba in June

If you are planning on coming to Cuba at the start of the month to enjoy the last of the good weather, consider having at least a few days on the nearby island Caya Coco, home to several luxury beach resorts and incredible coral reefs. Prices will be very reasonable even for all-inclusive holidays during June, but there is also a lot more to discover on the island than beaches and hotels. 

Perhaps the biggest attraction in Caya Coco is the coral reefs that line the coastline of the island, and which are incredible for scuba-diving and snorkelling excursions. The island is also covered in forests that are perfect for exploring and home to an immense variety of wildlife, including a huge colony of flamingos.

June is a brilliant time to properly explore the most visited areas of Cuba at your own pace, and one of these popular locations is the borough of Old Havana right in the middle of the country’s capital city. The area still has its original layout and much of its authentic colonial architecture, and is known for its narrow streets that are often lined with the vintage cars that Cuba is famous for.

Old Havana is best navigated on foot, as this way you can take in every element of your surroundings and better appreciate the atmosphere of this historic area. Catch your breath in one of the plazas, and spend some time people-watching with a coffee or cocktail before heading back out into the rest of the city.

A wonderfully unique and quirky area in Cuba is Cienfuegos on the south coast of the island. Originally built by the French as a European style holiday town, Cienfuegos is an incredibly pretty place to visit with the ocean on one side of the town and the Sierra del Escambray mountains rising up on the other.

Known as ‘the pearl of the south’, you can pass your time in the town by simply walking the streets and admiring the range of brightly coloured buildings and unique architectural styles, or explore outside of its boundaries and visit the forests or bays nearby. The town isn’t known for its beaches, but with the unpredictable June weather this shouldn’t matter too much, as there are a host of historic attractions to keep visitors busy instead.

Roll a Cigar 

Cuban cigars are famous across the world, and even if you aren’t a smoker yourself you can still learn how to roll a classic cigar in many places across the island and take it home as a souvenir or present for someone else. If you want a more authentic experience you can travel to a tobacco farm in rural Cuba, where the best cigars can either be bought or hand-rolled in a workshop. 

Go Snorkelling in a Coral Reef

The warm seas temperatures in June make it a perfect month for snorkelling, and an abundance of marine life can be found in many of Cuba’s bays that are perfect for admiring as you swim. Caya Coco has already been mentioned as a prime spot, but Maria la Gorda and Holguín are also excellent locations for underwater exploration.  

Stroll Along the Havana Malecon

Havana’s classic promenade stretches out for seven kilometres across the seafront, lined with brightly painted buildings showcasing the range of architecture that the capital city is home to. It’s a great way to spot classic cars, mingle with street vendors and catch some of the cool breezes that roll off the ocean. 

Cabaret at the Tropicana Club

The Tropicana Club in Havana is one of the most iconic entertainment spots in the whole country and a very popular place to spend an evening if the weather isn’t suited for outdoor dining and drinking. It’s an expensive venue, but well worth the price for a spectacular night of Cuban dance and music.

June is one of Cuba’s least busy months because of the unpredictable weather, resulting in some of the lowest prices for flights and accommodation. If you are wanting to visit Cuba on a budget then June is one of the best months to do this, and you will also be able to enjoy many of its popular attractions , restaurants and bars in peace.

Many Cuban families make the most of this drop in tourism and take their holidays on the beach in June, but the crowds are nowhere near as bad as during peak tourist season, and the atmosphere across the country is much more authentic.

The Fiesta de San Juan is celebrated in many Latin American countries, and the biggest event in Cuba takes place in Trinidad at the end of June. If you are wanting to experience a classic Cuban carnival then this is a fantastic one to attend, featuring a huge procession, elaborate costumes and displays of horsemanship from guajiros; Cuban agricultural workers.

Ernest Hemingway Needlefish Tournament 

Fishing is a very popular pastime across the island of Cuba, and this competition was established by the famous author himself in the 1950s. Hosted off the coast of Havana at the Hemingway Marina, the tournament focuses on needlefish species such as wahoo, marlin, and tuna and is the most important fishing event in Cuba’s cultural calendar.

International Golden Boleros Festival

Bolero is a slow-tempo genre of Latin music, and the International Golden Bolero Festival that takes place in Havana is a celebration of this popular kind of music. Originally accompanied by just guitars and drums, bolero music is now performed with symphony orchestras at this event and offers a more classical take on Cuban music.

This island has a lot of things to offer its visitors, which is why it has become more and more popular among travelers from different parts of the world. Whether you're looking to experience an action-packed adventure, to soak up the rich culture listening to rumba and smoking Cuban cigars in a Havana music joint, or to enjoy a relaxing getaway on a gorgeous white sand beach, Cuba will not disappoint!

Although Cuba is not that big , it offers a diverse sub-tropical climate, just like the  Bahamas . This means that you will be able to experience cool winds that might offer a welcome relief from the strong humidity and heat in the summer season.

YES if: You like or don't mind travelling in low season. It is also the best time to travel if you are a budget traveler and are looking to save up on your trip. NO if: You don't want to experience a little bit of rain. The main reason why the flow of tourists slows down in this month is that June marks the beginning of rainy season on the island. This is particularly true in the capital city, Havana. And in many parts of Cuba, there is even a chance of hurricanes. But as mentioned above, even in June, which is considered to be the start of rainy season, you can still experience some warm rays of sunshine.

When we say it's the "start of rainy season", we mean that yes, it does rain for a few hours. But don't worry, it's nothing so crazy that it will ruin your whole trip. Although it comes down fast and heavy, the rain rarely lasts long in Cuba. The clouds soon brighten up and part to let the sunshine filter through and dry everything. But then again, the weather can be extremely unpredictable!

The eastern part of Cuba tends to be more humid and hotter during the month of June, while the temperature in the region around Sancti Spíritus and Trinidad also rises over the average temperature.

Compared to other islands in the Caribbean and several Central American countries , Cuba has so far held up comparatively well even through the most threatening of hurricanes, although rural areas are more at risk.

Much of the island, including Havana and the cities of the north, enjoy a gentle cooling and near-constant breeze of around 6 mph that removes the harshness of the sun and holds back much of the 80% average humidity too. You can expect to enjoy eight hours of sunshine and 14 hours of light each day, with the sun setting around 8 pm. After these long hours of daylight, you’ll probably be happy for a short respite that comes with the beauty of sunset. Overnight temperatures average out at 22°C (72°F), making walks along the island’s seafronts come evening an amazing experience. Although June technically sits within the Caribbean’s hurricane season, it’s extraordinarily rare for a storm to hit Cuba in June. The temperatures that cities like Havana reach during June make for ideal beach weather. And with almost 6,000 km of coastline, there’s certainly no shortage of places to enjoy all the Cuban coast is able to offer, whether you’re looking for cocktails beside a pool, or an adventure among the waves. Cuba offers some magical snorkelling locations, as far afield as Playa Giron on the Bay of Pigs and Guardalavaca in the far east of the country. For heavenly seclusion you can do no better than the string of islands that stretch across the country’s northern coast known as cayos, while the thin peninsula of Varadero offers a little bit of everything. Just a couple of hours from Havana by road, the Varadero Peninsula boasts 20 km of prime sands, alongside small nature reserves, lively bars and restaurants, and more water sports than you probably thought possible, from kayaking to sea fishing. With the heat such as it is, hailing one of Cuba’s aging taxi fleet, made up of the now classic American cars that have plied the roads of the island since before the communist revolution in the late 1950s, is an excellent way of seeing the sights without the effort! Taxi drivers are now well-used to acting as tour guides, and are happy to lead tourists around cities such as Havana. A ride in one of these vintage convertibles is really something of a must when visiting Cuba, and is a great way of getting further afield than the UNESCO World Heritage Site of Old Havana (Habana Vieja). Take in the mansions of the Miramar district of the capital, and the towers of Vedado, being sure to stop off for an ice cream at the Coppelia parlour – a bustling city institution welcoming 35,000 customers each day – along the way.

The most important fishing festival of the year takes place in Cuba in June. The Hemingway International Billfishing Tournament was founded by the American author who spent a decade living on a farm (now a museum open to the public) called Finca Vigia on the edges of Havana. He was awarded the Nobel Prize in Literature for works including The Old Man and the Sea, about an aging Cuban fisherman doing battle with a marlin, and was known to adore fishing. Attracting participants from around 30 countries each year, there are prizes for the first catch of the day, largest tuna, and youngest fisherman among others. However, if music and dance is your preferred past time, Cuba in June still has much to tempt you, thanks to the presence of the International Golden Boleros Festival this month. Celebrating the island’s musical heritage through the boleros musical genre, the festival is the oldest of its type in Latin America, having started in 1987. While it may be officially based in Havana, the festival is now spreading right across the island, giving you even more chances to catch the spectacle. It’s pretty much summer all year long in Cuba, but some months are hotter, stickier, and more uncomfortable than others. The best time to visit Cuba is between November and April. These are not only Cuba’s driest months but also good bets for 70 degree blue sky days made for exploring cobblestone streets and lounging on secluded postcard-perfect beaches.

While December through February are Cuba’s coldest months, temperatures are usually in the 70s. Lows might dip into the 60s, but you’ll never need a coat, hat or gloves. Winter days are long, with nearly 11 hours of daylight even in December, and there are few better places to escape the winter back home than a Caribbean island nation where summer lasts all year long.

Peak Season in Cuba

Easter, Christmas, and New Year’s are popular travel times in Cuba. Hotels, flights, and tours can book up ahead of time, and prices may increase slightly as well. Snowbirds seek out Cuba throughout the winter months when temperatures are far cooler and often accompanied by snow, ice, and strong winds back home.

Cuba’s Hurricane Season

Hurricanes are rare in Cuba, but to further minimize the possibility of trip disruptions, avoid planning travel to Cuba in August and September. While hurricane season officially runs from June through November, Caribbean hurricanes most frequently occur in August and September.

June through August are the hottest months of the year in Cuba and the country’s summer season. Average temperatures are in the 80s but don’t be surprised by a 90-degree day. Summers in Cuba can also be humid, making for a hot, sticky, sweaty vacation that’s more uncomfortable than it needs to be. Cuba’s rainy season stretches from April through November and could cramp your Cuban summer beach style.

But summer brings some of Cuba’s most exciting festivals, and Cubans are more likely to be off from school and work for summer vacations, making some destinations more lively than at other times of the year.

Events to check out

• Late June brings a celebration of bolero music to Havana and bolero concerts to Santiago de Cuba and other cities across the country.
• July brings Fiesta del Fuego, a sizzling celebration of Afro-Caribbean culture, to Santiago de Cuba, a Spanish settlement in southeastern Cuba that’s known for its colonial architecture, revolutionary history, and Afro-Cuban cultural influences. The event draws speakers, guests, and musical acts from across the Caribbean.
• July also brings one of Cuba's marquee celebrations, Carnival, to Santiago de Cuba, considered the most African city on the island. Carnival floods Santiago de Cuba's streets with masked partiers and lengthy conga lines. Carnival migrates to Havana in August, though the capital city's celebrations are generally more muted than in Santiago de Cuba. Still, you're sure to find plenty of street parties and open-air concerts to keep you busy.
• In August, Havana also hosts an international hip hop festival. Temperatures may be sizzling, but so is the hip hop scene in Havana at this time of year.

September and October can still be muggy and hot in Cuba, but temperatures start cooling off in November. October is one of the slowest months in Cuban tourism and provides additional opportunities for bargains and enjoying this country without the crowds.

• September may still be muggy, but this is when Cuba honors its national saint, the Virgin of Cobre. Pilgrimages to her altar occur in the small Cuban town El Cobre and celebrations in her honor are held across the country early during the month.
• October brings the Days of Cuban Culture, a chance to celebrate Cuba's anti-colonial spirit and rich Afro-Cuban culture.
• Also in October: the Matamoros Son music festival in Santiago de Cuba, an International Ballet Festival in Havana, and an International Fishing Tournament, held at Jardines del Ray beach.

Winter is the best time to visit Cuba. These months may bring bone-chilling temperatures to much of the world, but Cuba remains a paradise from November through February. Temperatures are in the 70s, the water is warm, and it’s like winter isn’t even real. Do be aware, Christmas and New Year’s are popular travel times in Cuba. Hotels, flights, and tours can book up ahead of time, and prices may increase slightly as well.

• By December, the temperatures in Cuba have cooled to idyllic 70-something degrees. Still, the International Festival of New Latin American Film is likely to coax travelers indoors with a packed schedule of films showing over 10 days in early December.
• Late December brings Las Parrandas, an extravagant Christmas Eve Carnival with late-night parades, ornate floats and lots of fireworks.
• January in Cuba is for jazz lovers and when Havana—a hotbed for Cuban jazz music—hosts an International Jazz Festival .
• February brings the International Book Fair, focused on Spanish language texts, to Havana. Havana's international book fair is considered to be among the top book fairs in Latin America.
• Havana hosts the Habanos Festival in February, as well. This is one you'll want to visit if you're a cigar aficionado with a penchant for a Cuban stogie.

Spring can also be a pleasant time to visit Cuba, but April and May have the potential to bring rainy days. Cuba’s rainy season begins in April and runs through November with the wettest months seeing rain for an average of nearly 11 days a month. Temperatures are quick to climb, so don’t be surprised to find hot, muggy weather already settling in during April vacations.

• Mid-march is when you'll want to visit Cuba if you can't get enough of the country's exquisitely maintained classic cars. Havana hosts a weeklong celebration of classic cars each March to celebrate the Detroit dinosaurs that fill its streets. There's usually at least one caravan of classic cars from another Cuban city.
• To experience something truly unique, plan your visit in May when Cuba hosts its May Day parades and public gatherings across the country. The biggest of these events occurs in Havana's Plaza de la Revolución and draws upwards of 100,000 people. May Day is the traditional socialist observation of Labor Day.
• Late May brings the International Blue Marlin Tournament, a big-game fishing competition held at Marina Hemingway.

Honestly, the best time to visit Cuba depends on what you like to do on vacation and the activities and adventures you plan to have there!

With the harsh winter spanning across the US, Canada and Europe, it is always a good time to visit this tropical island. It is a perfect Caribbean getaway destination.

Cuba offers so much in a vacation from old Spanish (albiet crumbling architecture), stunning world class beaches and epic countryside, not to mention a haven for music lovers, there is no shortage of fun things to do in Havana, Cuba .

If you are looking for the perfect conditions, November to March is the best time to visit Cuba, as the weather is warm but not toasty enough to fry your skin within an inch of it’s life.

If you are not afraid of a sun-shower or two and you are looking to get great deals on accommodation and flights, April and May are a pretty good pick – especially for the budget conscious traveler.

January in Cuba

January falls within high season in Cuba as the winter months on the Caribbean island provide dry weather and the perfect climate.

It is not the best time to visit if you want to avoid the crowds as many people gain vacations in January and the cruise ships carrying snowbirds from the US and Canada dock almost every day in Cuba during the winter months.

January does however provide some of the nicest days all year in Cuba with perfect 21°C (70°F) that makes it possible to explore the city of Havana or head to the beach without the fear of getting burnt.

You won’t even need to worry about packing your umbrella for a trip to Cuba in January as the skies are almost always clear and a perfect shade of blue.

January is the coldest month in Cuba but luckily you never have to worry about bringing a jacket to Cuba as this Caribbean island is always warm and sunny.

February in Cuba

We visited Cuba in February and can personally attest that it was an absolutely fabulous time to visit Cuba.

It is still high season in February in Cuba but as the Christmas holiday makers and cruisers have diminished, it is a quieter month to visit in comparison to January.

Temperatures can rise to 25°C (78°F) in February. As it is still dry season, we did not experience a single day of rain during our trip to Cuba in February.

The downside of visiting Cuba in the dry months is that the beautiful countryside of Viñales will be a brown/green color in comparison to a bright green vivid color you will see in the wet months in Cuba.

Personally, I prefer a brown/green color then getting absolutely drenched in rain but the choice is yours!

March in Cuba

Tourism starts to pick up in March in Cuba as people get more holidays. During March and particularly at Easter time is the busiest time for Cuban tourism.  

Weather wise it is still a fabulous time of year to visit as the days are warm but not scorching yet 28°C (82°F) and there is still very little rain in the sky.

Unlike somewhere like Cancun, where we recently enjoyed an epic Mexico road trip , Cuba has not yet picked up as a hot Spring Break location, partly because of some restrictions still being placed on American tourism to the Caribbean island.

It is expected in years to come that Cuban tourism during Spring Break will massively increase due to the close proximity to the United States and the cheap flights from Miami and other major international hubs in the US now offered.

Until this point, Cuba proves a great destination for an older traveler in March who wants to avoid the Spring Break kids.

April in Cuba

April is the final month before the harsh temperatures and rain of summer sets in. It is also the final month of high season before rainy season in Cuba.

If Easter falls in April in the year you are visiting, you can expect crowds to be still very high in April.

Weather is beginning to get quite hot in Cuba in April with high temperatures as much as 30°C (86°F). On the plus side, April is the least humid month to visit the Caribbean island.

As April is the final month before rainy season in Cuba, if you are particularly opposed to rain, we would recommend squeezing in a visit to Cuba before the rains set in in May.

The streets of Havana are dirt based and tend to get very muddy during rainy season in Cuba.

May in Cuba

May is the beginning of rainy season in Cuba. As the rains have not fully set in yet, it is a good time of year to get low season prices and predominately dry weather. 

May is however, the beginning of very hot weather in Cuba as the long hot summer sun sets in. You can expect temperatures as high as 31°C (88°F) in Cuba in May.

With a few showers, the plus side is that if you are planning on making a trip to the countryside of Cuba, it is starting to green up and look fabulous in photography.

As the weather in May can be quite unpredictable, we would highly recommend packing a umbrella and raincoat.

Due to export restrictions, you can’t expect to buy anything like you would at home in Cuba so it is always best practice to bring the necessities with you.

June in Cuba

June is the rainiest month in Cuba, so if you don’t like rain, June is not a good time to visit Cuba.

In June, Cuba receives an average of 80 mm of precipitation throughout the month. It is absolutely essential to bring a rain jacket and umbrella if you plan to travel to Cuba in June.

As would be expected June is also an extremely hot time to visit Cuba with temperatures soaring as high as 32 °C (90°F).

The rain and heat tends to ward off the crowds at this time of year so if you are looking for the best prices on flights and accommodation this is a good time of year to visit.

If you plan to visit in June, make sure that your accommodation has air conditioning. You will probably want to retreat off the streets of Havana or Trinidad during the hottest part of the day so having a working air conditioning console is absolutely essential.

July in Cuba

July continues Cuba’s rainy season. 

Rainy season is Cuba is different to rain in other places in the world. It is hard and torrential but lasts less time meaning you need to run for cover but will be able to get back out and about sightseeing in no time.

The beach of Varadero is a popular option for holidaymakers to Cuba in July as the hot weather can make meandering the streets of Havana particularly uncomfortable during the day.

The temperature in July stays the same or marginally hotter than the month of June.

August in Cuba

Cuba is still hot and rainy in August. Bad humidity tends to add to the heat in Cuba in August meaning that Cuba can feel rather a lot like a sauna in August.

if you plan to visit Havana, you will need to plan your sightseeing for the early mornings and late evenings. Most people choose to go to the beaches rather than the cities in Cuba during August.

As August receives some of the fewest visitors, you can expect low season prices on flights and accommodation.

As Cuba is a communist country and business owners are required to give hefty fees back to the government in order to operate, you sadly won’t see the same discounted prices on accommodation, food and retail as you would elsewhere in the world.

September in Cuba

September is the start of the worst of Hurricane season in Cuba. Due to the possibility of cyclone activity in Cuba in September, it is the month with the fewest visitors to Cuba.

On the plus side, hurricanes only hit Cuba on average once every 4 years so your chance of getting caught within a hurricane is incredibly low.

During September, you can take advantage of the cheapest prices in Cuba.

September is a little less hot and rainy than June with an average of 13 days of rain throughout the months and 70 mm of precipitation. Keep in mind you will still need a umbrella in Cuba in September.

October in Cuba

October is the second month of potentially bad hurricanes in Cuba.

As mentioned above, these are incredibly rare making October one of the best times to visit Cuba as temperatures start to fall and crowds are lower.

Temperatures have fallen to around 28 °C (83°F) in October making it a more pleasant time to visit Cuba and meander the streets of Havana during the middle of the day.

There is still a good chance of rain in October so pack your rain essentials with you.

November in Cuba

November is your last chance to get into Cuba before the crowds of holidaymakers make their way there in December.

November is a nice time to visit Cuba for a mix of low season prices and sunshine days.

Although there will be a few rainy days here and there, November brings perfect weather to Cuba with a average temperature of 24°C (75°F).

If you want to escape the harsh weather that has begin to set on some part of the US, Canada and Europe at this time of year and still enjoy reasonable prices, this is the best time to visit Cuba.

December in Cuba

Due to the Christmas vacation and the cold weather in most places around the world, December is absolutely peak time in Cuba.

Due to the crowds looking for a holiday, it will be increasingly difficult to snag a good deal on a flight or accommodation in Cuba during December. You will also be battling the crowds on the streets of Havana and Trinidad.

It is not all bad news if you only have this time of year up your sleeve, as temperatures are very mild and the streets of Havana are absolutely alive with people (which adds to the atmosphere) making it the best time to visit Cuba for some people.

What to Bring to Cuba? Cuba Travel Essentials

• BRING:  Travel Insurance. Upon entering Cuba, my Dad was asked to show proof of insurance. I didn’t know this before visiting but the immigration officer informed us that you would be denied access to Cuba without proof of insurance.
• BRING:  Travel Information. As there is little wifi in Cuba, it is advisable to bring with you notes or a guidebook of all the awesome things there are to do. We would recommend bringing with you a copy of the  Lonely Guide to Cuba  with you to Cuba unless you are very organised and manage to plan every restaurant and activity in advance. 
• DON’T BRING:  Your drone. Sadly, drones are not allowed in Cuba at this stage. If you bring your drone into Cuba, it will be temporarily held at the airport. You will also be required to pay a fine to get it back.

Boasting a bounty of beautiful beaches, along with extraordinary wildlife-watching experiences, adventure opportunities and festivals, Cuba has much to commend it whenever you visit. That said, the best month to visit Cuba depends on what you most want to do, and your budget, along with your opinion on the likes of tourist numbers, and the potential risks of the hurricane season. With these factors in mind, here we present the best time to visit Cuba from different perspectives. One thing’s for sure, Cuba is the kind of sparky destination that first-timers often find themselves longing to return to.

• When is the best time to visit Cuba?

December and January — best for winter sun and high season vibes

February and march — best for outdoor adventure, april and october – best for shoulder-season balance, may, june and september — best for budget travellers, july and august — best for high energy cuban culture, when is the best time to visit cuba .

The best time to visit Cuba is November to April when it's dry season . If you can, skip May to October. The wet season. Though the dry season is generally considered to be the best time to visit Cuba, note that downpours are often (but not always...) short-lived in the wet season, and temperatures are high.

• The Atlantic hurricane season runs from 1st June through to 30th November, with September and October often being peak months for tropical storms and hurricanes.
• Coinciding with the dry season, Cuba’s tourist high season runs from November to April, though visitor numbers often drop-off from — and through — April.
• The wet season months of June, July, August and September see low season levels of crowds, and corresponding lower costs, with visitor numbers increasing through October as a drier period beckons.
• It’s also worth knowing that while July and August see smaller numbers of international visitors, these months are busy for local tourism. 

They're also the hottest months of the year — worth bearing in mind when planning your Cuba itinerary , along with the factors detailed below.

Kicking off with the obvious, according to a huge number of travellers, the best time to visit Cuba is during the peak high season months of December and January.

Given that these months sit in the region’s dry season — at a time when many of us are seeking respite from colder climes — visitors to Cuba in December and January can expect gloriously sunny, rain-free days. 

With warm temperatures sitting comfortably below the sizzling heat of summer, these are arguably the best months for enjoying the best beaches in Cuba .

At the same time, December and January being high season months means major tourist hubs (among them Havana , Varadero and Guardalavaca ) will be busy with like-minded travellers hoping for fun in the sun.

Beyond the entertainment offered by tourist resorts, this time of year sees Cuba stage a number of major festivals that are worth visiting for in their own right. 

For example, Havana hosts an international film festival in December. Come January, celebrated jazz festivals take place in both the Cuban capital and Santiago de Cuba .

The flipside of these attractive reasons to visit Cuba in December and January are the usual high season trappings. By which we mean higher costs for flights and accommodation, packed attractions, and busy beaches.

That said, you could always opt to explore lesser-travelled paths on an independent backpacking adventure, or on a customised Cuba itinerary that’ll take you off the beaten track .

Though still sitting in the dry high season, February and March see visitor numbers drop-off from their December and January peak. These months also offer optimal conditions for diving and snorkelling.

The same is true of hiking and biking. Being cooler than the heady heat of summer, but still dry and warm, these are top months to explore the country’s wilder walking trails. They're also a great time to take advantage of Cuba’s relatively car-free roads on a cycling trip .

Bird-watchers, note that this time of year sees over 260 migratory species flock to Cuba. Ciénaga de Zapata in the Matanzas province, and Peninsula de Guanahacabibes in  Pinar del Rio are notable hotspots.

If you’re looking for a balance between high season crowds, warm weather and more moderate rainfall, April might be the best time for you to visit Cuba.

Sitting at the end of Cuba’s main high season — though Easter sees a spike in visitor numbers — April is quieter than January-March. It’s also cheaper and warmer than the preceding months, and drier than the months that follow.

Nature-lovers will also want to note that turtle-watching season kicks off at this time of year. For example, if you visit  Cayo Largo between April and September, you might just get to see loggerhead, hawksbill and green turtles come ashore to nest.

A similar kind of balance can be had in October, which isn’t as hot and humid as June-September. Bargains can often be had in October, too.

Just be mindful of the fact that the official hurricane season runs until the end of November.

While Cuba is eminently do-able on a modest budget around the year — especially if you stay in casas particulares  — May, June and September offer the biggest bargains.

With these months still sitting in turtle season, they especially suit nature-lovers who are keen to curtail costs. Also note that a second bird migratory season takes place from September to November. 

As a bonus, May sees Holguin stage Romerias de Mayo. Presenting performances from local and international musicians, along with parades, dance and art shows, it's fair to say this traditional religious festival has been given a modern makeover.

Meanwhile, the fabulously flamboyant Fiestas San Juaneras takes place in  Trinidad at the end of June.

Again, be aware these months sit within the wet season, so expect rain showers and high humidity. Also note that tropical storms and hurricanes are a possibility in June, and more so in September.

Though low season months for international tourism, July and August see an increase in domestic tourism. At the same time, temperatures rise to their annual peak. 

In terms of the numbers, average daily highs typically hit 32-34 º C in August.

Hosting two major cultural events, July is an especially great time to visit Santiago de Cuba . First up, Fiesta del Fuego — a three-day fire festival, which is held in early July.

Officially known as the Festival del Caribe, this sees the city transformed into the stage for all manner of costumed parades, performances, and giant congas through the streets.

Stick around until the end of July and you’ll also get to experience one of Cuba’s liveliest events — the Santiago de Cuba carnival.

Come August, Havana hosts its own carnival, while Varadero’s Josone Music Festival showcases the talents of top jazz and son Cubano  musicians.

Havana's cultural calendar is full of visit-worthy events every month, with the more prestigious festivals taking place between October and April.

Jazz or ballet? Religious processions or fiery festivals? Cheap hotel deals or cool temperatures? You'll be able to find something to fit your taste and budget throughout the year.

Lapped by the choppy waters of the Straits of Florida, Havana is always warm, but it hits a climatic peak during the northern hemisphere winter when the weather is dry and not too humid. This seasonal guide can help you plan the best time for your visit to Havana . 

November to March and July to August are the best times for beaches

Havana’s high season stretches from November to March, when hordes of tourists from Europe and Canada flee the snow and freezing temperatures and decamp to Cuba . While many head to the all-inclusive resorts that line the north coast, a good proportion spend at least part of their time in Havana.

More than a quarter of Havana’s winter tourists come from Canada, and they start arriving in early to mid-November. Prices for flights, hotels and packages start going up from then and nudge even higher (as much as 25%) over Christmas and New Year, making this the most expensive time to visit.

As the rainy season draws to a close, temperatures become more bearable in November, and acclimatized runners line up for Havana’s annual marathon. 

December brings one of Havana's biggest international festivals, Festival Internacional del Nuevo Cine Latinoamericano (dedicated to film), and its most devotional religious procession (dedicated to San Lázaro).

Christmas celebrations have been reignited in the last two decades after practically dying out during the early years of the Revolution.

The busiest month in terms of tourist numbers is January, closely followed by February and March, when the weather is dry but not too hot and tempered by the occasional frente frio (cold front). January is Havana’s coolest month, with average daily temperatures of around 22ºC (72ºF).

Expect some shortages during this busy time, particularly in the availability of rental cars. Sharp-eyed travelers visiting in March should look out for migratory birds that congregate in some of the city's large green spaces , including Parque Lenin and the Jardín Botánico Nacional .

Crowds aside, January to March is the perfect time to visit the beaches of Playas del Este and partake in a range of water activities. It’s also the conclusion of Cuban baseball’s National Series and a potentially exciting time for fans of Havana’s Industriales team.

The mini high season of July and August is when Cubans go on vacation. This two-month-long summer spike affects the country’s cheaper hotels and rural campismos (affordable rustic accommodations) but has less of an impact in Havana, except during the city’s annual carnival in August. Scorching temperatures are guaranteed – August is the city’s hottest month.

The shoulder season months of April and October have fewer visitors

Foreign visitors begin tailing off in April, and prices start to fall after Easter. Despite waning tourist numbers, the weather remains good; April is the second-driest month, the sunniest and the least humid. 

With this good weather and less-crowded beaches, April is a good time for fishing in the Gulf Stream and kitesurfing at Tarará.

Conversely, October can be stormy, with oppressive humidity and persistent rain to dampen tourist numbers. However, early fall delivers some excellent cultural annual events.

The internationally acclaimed theater and ballet festivals – Festival de Teatro de la Habana and Festival Internacional de Ballet de la Habana – are both worth planning a trip around.

May, June and September are the best months for budget travelers

Low season is prime time for budget travelers, crowd-avoiders and those not averse to getting a little wet. Bear in mind that Havana’s showers – even in the June to November rainy season – are usually short and heavy, with the rain rarely lasting all day.

Ranking as one of the cheapest months, May marks a sweet spot between the crowded winter season and the domestic barrage of summer. It also offers a potential weather window. 

June marks the start of hurricane season, but remember that the Caribbean hurricane season usually starts with a whimper as opposed to a bang.

Big storms are an exception rather than a rule in June, although it’s the wettest month for all-around rainfall. It is also the height of mango season – reason enough to visit! September is peak hurricane season in Cuba, when the outside chance of a “big one” (usually every four to five years) keeps many vacationers at bay. 

While there are not a ton of quirky festivals to savor during the off-season, Havana never lacks life, and all the best museums and sights remain open year-round.

Accommodations-wise, you’ll pay cheaper rates and find better availability in the low season. Similarly, travelers will enjoy shorter lines, less crowded beaches and a quieter, slicker airport experience.

Average temperatures in Cuba vary little. Considering humidity, temperatures feel hot for most of the year with a fair chance of precipitation about half of the year. The area is less temperate than some — in the 25th percentile for pleasant weather — compared to tourist destinations worldwide. Weeks with ideal weather are listed above . If you’re looking for the very warmest time to visit Cuba, the hottest months are July, August, and then September. See average monthly temperatures below. The warmest time of year is generally late July where highs are regularly around 90.8°F (32.7°C) with temperatures rarely dropping below 75.7°F (24.3°C) at night.

Cuba has some very humid months, and above average humidity throughout the year. The least humid month is March (61.1% relative humidity), and the most humid month is October (73.6%).

Wind in Cuba is usually calm . The windiest month is March, followed by February and April. March’s average wind speed of around 7.8 knots (8.9 MPH or 14.4 KPH) is considered “a gentle breeze.” Maximum sustained winds (the highest speed for the day lasting more than a few moments) are at their highest in early March where average top sustained speeds reach 13.4 knots, which is considered a moderate breeze.

The middle-year months have very comfortable weather with high temperatures that are quite warm. These months see the most precipitation with 6 to 7 days of precipitation per month. June – August is the slowest season for tourism in Cuba, so lodging and other accommodations may cost less than usual.

Fall (September through November)

Fall daily highs range from 90°F (32.2°C) and 82.8°F (28.2°C), which will feel very nice given the humidity and wind. It rains or snows a significant amount: 3 to 7 days per month. Tourism is fairly slow during these months due to the weather, so hotels may be lower priced.

Winter (December through February)

Weather is perfect this time of year in Cuba to be enjoyable for warm weather travelers. The average high during this season is between 83.8°F (28.8°C) and 81.4°F (27.4°C). On average, it rains or snows a smalll amount: 2 to 3 times per month. These times of year are the busiest with tourists.

The Torneo Internacional de Pesca de la Aguja Ernest Hemingway ( Ernest Hemingway International Marlin Fishing Tournament ) is ideal for any sport fishing lover. Athletes from more than 14 countries around the world participate in this event and dazzle spectators with their talent on the north coast of the Province of Havana . The tournament, which is held annually on these dates, is part of the point system of the International Federation of Sport Fishing .  

For rock lovers, the city of Matanzas brings together the best Cuban rock groups at the Atenas Rock Festival, which presents various activities on this popular genre of music. This festival takes place annually in mid-June. Among its main activities we can find tattoo and contemporary art exhibitions, panels, debates, conferences, sale of merchandising and promotional CDs. In the city of Las Tunas, from June 30 onwards, the Jornada Cucalambeana ( Cucalambeana Day ) takes place. In this event, you can enjoy a tribute to the peasantry of Cuba. Here you can get to know the Cuban peasant culture from its ingenious decimas (tenths) and wonderful tunes to its exquisite cuisine, so you can soak up the different corners that this cozy country presents to you.

The month of June is the beginning of summer in the northern hemisphere, but Cuba maintains its tropical climate, with temperatures between 23°C and 30°C . Although temperatures rise, the climate is ideal to enjoy Cuban beaches. 4-Day Cuba Itinerary 2024: The Complete Cuba Travel Guide

While visiting family in Miami, Scott’s Cheap Flights showed a flight deal with a direct flight to Havana, Cuba! After a quick search to confirm that US citizens could travel to Cuba, we were ready to plan our Cuba itinerary.

To our surprise, our Cuba itinerary quickly filled up with things to do in Havana and the surrounding areas. Thus, with our 4-Day Cuba Itinerary, we chose to maximize our time there by focusing on things to do in close proximity to Havana.

Traveling to Cuba from the US

Traveling to Cuba from the US is legal; however, not for strictly tourist activities.

This means that you are required to purchase a tourist v isa and declare one of the 12 categories of authorized travel to Cuba:

• Family Visits
• Support for the Cuban people
• Official government business (and certain intergovernmental organizations)
• Journalistic activity
• Professional research and professional meetings
• Educational activities
• Religious activities
• Public performances, clinics, workshops, athletic and other competitions
• Humanitarian projects
• Activities of private foundations, research, or educational institutes
• exportation, importation, or transmission of information
• Certain authorized export transactions

We chose “support for the Cuban people” which is pretty easy to do by staying at locally owned lodging, supporting local restaurants, volunteering, etc.

You can get these visas directly from the airline, either online or directly at the gate. The cost of a visa starts at $50 and can increase depending on the airline and if you buy it in person.

We purchased ours directly at the Delta gate in Miami airport for $50. There was no pushback or questions when filling out the travel visa form.

Additional Requirements for Traveling to Cuba from the US

In addition to the travel visa and declaring one of the 12 categories, you must have travel insurance, customs, and health declaration, and fulfill any travel restrictions required by the pandemic.

Cuba Itinerary 2024 Overview

Day 1: things to do in havana, museo de la revolucion.

If you want to learn about the Cuba/US relationship from the Cuban government’s perspective, a visit to Museo de la Revolucion is a nice addition to your Cuba itinerary. It gives a very clear perspective of how the Cuba government feels about the United States.

There were a few galleries that explored Cuban history- key players, influencers, etc.- but the majority of the galleries (at least it felt that way) detailed how the US attempted to sabotage their country. The remaining exhibits reinforced how much the Cuban government helps and supports its people.

Please note that most of the Cubans I’ve encountered do not agree with the sentiments of the museum. In fact, some discourage visiting the museum due to how the government treats their citizens, causing many to be in poverty with a lack of basic necessities.

Personally, I wanted to get an understanding of the Cuban government’s perspective as I’m always leery of the US narrative about other countries. In my attempt to get a full perspective, our next adventure of the day was an Afro-Cuban Culture Tasting. It was the opportunity to get the actual local Cuban people’s reality.

Afro-Cuban Culture Tasting

There is no better way to learn about a culture than to go to their home, cook, and eat with them. This is exactly why the experience with Beyond Roots, which you can find here , should be on your Cuba itinerary.

We had first-hand exposure to the Afro-Cuban religions, learning the various customs, and foods they offer to the gods. I must admit, I was a bit nervous as we entered the house. I mean, we were at a stranger’s home, in a foreign country.

To make the experience even more “interesting,” they instructed us to wash our hands at the outdoor sink. We were greeted by live chickens. Being city people, it took us by a bit of a surprise.

I’d recommend this experience to anyone, hands down! Beyond the religious enlightenment and delicious food, our hosts, two local women and a few others that would stop in occasionally were so open. We honestly could ask them anything. This gave us a great perspective on how the Cuban people live.

Having a true, local, Cuban experience was a key goal of our trip. This experience gave us just that.

Fabrica de Arte

Fabrica de Arte is such an interesting place- an art museum meets a performing arts center, meets a concert hall, a restaurant, and a bar. Literally, every form of art is represented.

We went a bit early, around 9 PM, right after our Afro-Cuban experience. There was artwork, structures, live music, a DJ dance hall, and even a live play- and of course bars and a couple of restaurants. In all my travel, I haven’t been to one location that had such a variety of artistic entertainment.

Day 2: Things to do in Vinales, Cuba

Pinar del Rio is located in the Westernmost part of Cuba, the beautiful countryside known for the country’s tobacco production. It’s about a two-hour drive from Havana.

We took a private tour with VC Tours, which you can find here . Our tour guide picked us up from our Airbnb in Tiffany, a beautiful 1954 Tiffany Blue Chevy. This car was pretty dope- until after the first hour on the interstate and my mid-30s body started to feel every bump we drove over.

But honestly, it was “vale la pena”- worth the pain.

Cuban Mogotes: Limestone Formations

After a short break at Las Barrigonas Travel Plaza with a fresh pina colada, we arrived at the beautiful limestone formation, Mogotes. Man, what a beautiful view!

We spent a few minutes taking in its beauty before we headed to the main event, the tobacco farm.

Cuban Tobacco Farm

As we neared the tobacco farm, we saw huts without any windows which are used to dry the tobacco leaves. 90% of the farmer’s tobacco leaves go to the Cuban government. The remaining 10% is used by the local farmers to make their own cigars, which are actually organic and 90% of the nicotine is removed.

Did you even go to Cuba if a Cuban tobacco farm isn’t on your itinerary?

Upon arriving at the tobacco farm, we took a quick tour of the facility to learn more about the process. Soon after, it was our turn to roll cigars and smoke them!

I WAS SO NERVOUS as I had never smoked anything- not a cigar, cigarette, or anything similar. My mind kept telling me that I was going to choke and make a fool of myself.

So I dipped my cigar in the honey (a Cuban method that helps filter the remaining nicotine). Then I slowly put the cigar to my lips, and to my surprise, I was fairly good at smoking a cigar (once I realized you blow with the exhale…don’t judge me!)

Cuban Indian Cave and Prehistoric Mural

After the tobacco farm and lunch, we explored the Indian Cave and Prehistoric Mural. The Indian Cave was a pretty amazing short boat ride experience; I recommend that you add it to your Cuba itinerary.

On the contrary, the Prehistoric Mural, which is basically roped off to the public, only allows you to see the mural from afar, on a funky side angle. This makes the experience pretty mediocre. Skip it if possible.

Stroll El Malecon

El Malecon is a 4-mile esplanade that transverses through multiple Havana neighborhoods with the communities on one side and the shore on the other. This promenade embodies the culture of Havana with locals gathering to listen to music, dance, and enjoy one another’s company. You’ll also run into some trying their hand at fishing as well.

This path through the city isn’t shaded and becomes very hot during the day. Therefore, it’s recommended to come around sunset so you can see the sun setting over the water while the heat of the day slowly starts to dissipate. If you can’t make it around sunset, you can come in the early morning, before the day’s heat arrives.

Day 3: Experience Havana’s Plazas

Old Havana, La Habana Vieja, includes 4 main plazas that embody the history and culture of Havana. Each plaza has its own vibe and offers different elements of Cuba. You can visit the plazas via a tour if you’d like to understand the history from a local’s perspective or take your time and walk through each on your own terms.

We did the latter.

Plaza de Catedral – One of the busiest places in Old Havana. Plaza de Catedral is home to the Havana Catedral which is open to the public. If you’re a lover of architecture this is the perfect square to visit to take in the restored, historical buildings.

Additionally, you can find local Cuban Cigar Ladies dressed in their traditional garments. If you would like, you can take a picture with them, for a fee.

Plaza de San Francisco de Asis – Located across the street from the cruise terminal, Plaza de San Francisco de Asis embodies a lot of Cuban history as the Spanish would stop here on their journey from the Indies to Spain. Here you can find Fuente de Los Leones (Lion Fountain), statues, a cathedral, cafes, galleries, restaurants, and more

Plaza de Armas – The “birthplace of Havana” as it encompasses the legendary location that Havana was founded in 1519. Similarly, it’s home to Carlos Manuel de Cespedes, the “Father of the Nation” who was the initiator of Cuba’s independence in 1860.

Additionally, it’s home to the oldest castle of Havana, Royal Force Castle, and Parque Cespedes, a beautiful green park with plenty of seating and shade to people-watch or enjoy a snack from the various street vendors.

Plaza Vieja – if you’re looking for a lively plaza filled with music, dancing, performers, and more, Plaza Vieja is the one for you. In addition, you can grab a cold beer and a bite to eat at one of the numerous restaurants.

Plus the architecture is filled with so much color and vibrance, similar to the plaza’s ambiance.

La Plaza de la Revolucion

La Plaza de la Revolucion is not located in Old Havana and is not within walking distance to the above-listed plazas. In fact, it’s about a 10-15 min ride from Parque Central (right outside Havana Vieja.)

It’s basically the location where Castro and other political figures addressed Cubans (by the way, we learned that Castro gave a 7-hour speech from here!!) The key attractions are the steel memorials of Che Guevara and Camilo Cienfuegos.

It’s also the location where most of the classic cars line up for tourists to take pictures.

Couples Vacation Photoshoot

We had to document this experience, our first couples vacation since our twin boys! And oh man, our Airbnb Experience Photoshoot with Manuel at Cuban Soul Pictures, which you can find here , was A-MAZ-ING! Not only was it a photo shoot where he took BEAUTIFUL pictures of us (like magazine worthy) but the tour by itself was worth the money.

We toured Havana Vieja, actually very close to our Airbnb. The real experience for us was two things: 1) the convertible car ride to The Ancient Fortress of San Carlos de Cabana and 2) Chatting with Manuel to learn Cuban history and experience from a young local that has lived in Europe and visited the US frequently.

The Ancient Fortress of San Carlos de Cabana

The Ancient Fortress of San Carlos de Cabana is an 18th-century fortress complex, located on the elevated seaside of Havana.

The history. The beauty.

Man, it’s a must-add to your Cuba itinerary. Here, you will witness groups of locals hanging out and enjoying the scenery and their families and friends. As a matter of fact, I didn’t see a lot of tourists.

If you want a calm, relaxing, and historical place to relax in Havana, THIS IS IT!

Day 4: Beaches Near Havana- Playas de Este

Playas de este.

The beach is a must-add to your Cuba itinerary, especially on a couple’s vacation. Unfortunately, with our limited time in Cuba, we didn’t have time to take a day trip to Varadero Beach (about a 2-hour drive from Havana- and detailed below in the day trip section).

We were happy to find out there is a bus (T3) that leaves from Parque Central in Havana to a cluster of beaches about 30 minutes or so away from the city. The best part is the bus is only 5 CUC (about $5)  for a round trip! It’s recommended to get off at Santa Clara Beach or Santa Maria del Mar.

We got off at Santa Clara Beach which was a nice beach with beautiful water. If you’re looking for resort treatment with beautiful cabanas and whatnot, this is not the beach. It’s not touristy at all.

You can get beach chairs and an umbrella for only $6. The same guys who sell the chairs will grab food for you, for a fee of course. We realized they were going around the corner to the restaurant, a 3 min walk, where the food and drinks were 25% cheaper.

At this point of the trip, we were super broke (see the below section about currency to understand why). So every dollar made a difference.

Day Trips from Havana Cuba

Varadero is known as the best beach destination in Cuba as it’s filled with white sand beaches and resorts. If your goal is relaxation and drinking Cuban rum, you’ll be in the right place.

There are several buses from Havana to Varadero which take about 3 hours. If you hire a personal driver or go via a tour company, the ride will be about 2 hours.

If going to a Cuban beach is a must-do on your Cuban itinerary, but you don’t have time to go to Varadero, then take the Hop-On-Hop-Off bus, a 30-minute ride to Playas de Este. I mentioned some of the details above in the Day 4 Cuba itinerary.

I mentioned Vinales above during our private day trip to the Cuban tobacco farms in the Day 2 Cuba itinerary. If time permits, you should also do a horseback riding tour through the hills. So beautiful!

Want to experience the authentic spirit of Cuba? Then Trinidad is a must-add to your Cuba itinerary.

The history of the enslaved Africans who once occupied this now Declared World by UNESCO, is still alive today. If you want to learn more about the enslaved experience, book a Sugar Tour. Similarly, the beauty of the architecture’s vibrant colors and 50 mansions are worth the day trip itself.

If nature is more of your vibe, check out Parque Natural de Topes de Collantes’s beautiful waterfalls, Sendero Vegas Gardens, and the beautiful city of Cienfuegos.

The trip to Trinidad is a bit long with a 4-hour drive each way. Most likely you’d like to make this an overnight trip.

How Many Days Should you Spend in Cuba?

The number of days you should include in your Cuba itinerary varies depending on which things to do in Cuba best align with your interest. If it’s your first time in Cuba and you’re on a limited timeframe, then 3 or 4 days should suffice. This will give you the opportunity to have Havana as your base with 1-2 days exploring Havana, which is a must-visit in Cuba, and 1 or 2 day trips from Havana.

We chose to do 2 days in Havana and 2 day trips- 1 to Vinales and 1 to Playa de Este.

If you’d like to include more day trips or stay overnight in Vinales, Varadero, or Trinidad, then you’d want to add at least 2 or 3 more days to your Cuba itinerary, making it closer to a 7 or 10-day trip.

Best Time to Visit Cuba

The best months to visit Cuba is October to May as there is minimum rain and the weather is warm. June begins the start of hurricane season in the Atlantic and lasts until November. If you want to avoid hurricane season altogether, visit Cuba from December to May.

Things to Know About Visting Cuba

Currency exchange.

When we travel, especially on our first couples trip since becoming parents, we want to live- eat, drink, do activities, and buy stuff freely. Well, we did just that the first day until we realized that if we kept spending at that rate, we would run out of money.

US citizens have to bring all the cash that they think they will need while in Cuba. Unfortunately, no US credit cards, debit cards, or access to US banks is available from Cuba. To make matters even more stressful, most activities must be paid in cash, excluding those booked via Airbnb.

Therefore, between the 12% currency conversion rate, giving tips, and buying souvenirs to support the locals, we were spending more money than we expected. The day before we were supposed to return to the US, we were literally counting our pennies.

PRO TIP: Do not convert all of your money. Before paying for something in CUC, ask if they accept USD (or Euros) and at what exchange rate. If they do accept your currency, it’s most likely at a 1:1 rate- saving you the astronomical fee.

Spotty Wi-Fi

The other challenge is the Wi-Fi. It is not readily available.

First, you have to find a place with Wi-Fi. Secondly, you have to purchase a WIFI card to actually access the internet. It costs about $5 for one hour.

Perhaps, it doesn’t sound ridiculous, but as a mom of then one-year-old twins back in the US, I needed to see them. Unfortunately, the connection is pretty slow, so FaceTime cut in and out. Honestly, I think if I didn’t have the boys and I was on a couples trip, I wouldn’t have minded the limited and slow internet.

Leave as much as You Take

It’s undeniable that many Cuban citizens are suffering from poverty and a lack of resources. Therefore, when visiting be sure to leave as much as you take from the country. That can look like a variety of actions:

• Stay at a vacation rental owned by a local
• Bring personal items, food, and supplies for locals
• Support local, privately owned businesses, i.e. tour companies (we found ours through Airbnb experiences)
• Eat at local restaurants (i.e. not in a global chain hotel)

Where to Stay in Havana

Did you even visit Cuba if you didn’t go to Havana?

Where you choose to stay in Havana really depends on what vibe you’re looking for. There are 3 main Havana neighborhoods: Old Havana (Habana Vieja), Central Havana (Centro Habana), and Vedado.

Old Havana is home to many tourist attractions like plazas and museums. If you’re looking to stay in an area full of Havana’s culture and within walking distance of many of the attractions, Old Havana is the neighborhood for you.

Central Havana gives local vibes. Here is where you’d find the average Cuban living life. You’d be able to truly experience what it feels like to be Cuban- eating at local restaurants and walking to local attractions. Central Havana is home to the capital and sits between Old Havana and Vedado.

El Vedado is the central business district and the most modern and upscale area of Havana. The Malecon is on the northern edge of the neighborhood.

Please note that US Citizens can’t stay in Cuban government-owned hotels. Therefore, if you prefer hotels, you need to find one that’s not owned by the government or stay in a vacation rental- which is also support for the Cuban People.

Best Airbnb in Havana- Apartment Chacón 201

Sit on the balcony of Apartment Chacón 201 and take in all the vibes of Old Havana. This beautiful Airbnb is centrally located to walk to all attractions including the plazas, Malecon, Museo de Revolucion, and more.

Best Luxury Hotel in Havana – Iberostar Parque Central

Iberostar Parque Centra l is smack dab in the midst of the Havana action, located in Central Havana, a few blocks away from Old Havana. Not only does the architecture and decor exude luxury but the service and views do as well. If you don’t stay here during your Cuban vacation, you have to at least stop at the rooftop bar which offers amazing cocktail options and views of the capital, city, and more.

Best Budget-Friendly Hotel in Havana- Casa Colonial Yadilis y Yoel

Clean, safe, and friendly accommodation located in the center of Old Havana. The staff is extremely friendly and helpful, it’s like having a friend in Havana. Plus, enjoy a delicious breakfast on the rooftop terrace and take in the views of Old Havana.

Is It Okay To Travel To Cuba with Toddlers?

Honestly, I would travel with my boys to dang near anywhere that’s safe, of course. Cuba is very safe. It may look a bit shady, but that’s because some of the buildings are worn down & some streets aren’t necessarily the cleanest.

With that said, I would bring the boys to Cuba. However, our Cuba itinerary would have been different.

We probably would’ve exchanged the Vinales/Tobacco Tour for a day trip to Trinidad or Varadero Beach- because toddlers at a tobacco farm just don’t seem right. The museum, the walk to the plazas, and the majority of the other things on our Cuba itinerary would’ve worked with the boys.

Yes, the streets aren’t the smoothest. Therefore, using a stroller may have been a challenge; however, that’s not a big deal to me. I live in New Orleans and our streets aren’t smooth here either but that doesn’t stop us from going out.

Conclusion: Cuba Itinerary 2024

There are so many unique and fun things to do in Cuba. Literally, there is something for everyone- history, nature, culture, rum, cigars, and so much more.

If you consider yourself an open-minded traveler that enjoys destinations that may do things differently than what you’re accustomed to, then Cuba is a must-visit. The people are friendly and welcoming, and the vibe is so warm and vibrant.

Best Times To Visit Havana, Cuba

The best time to visit Cuba is between January and February. The island's location in the Caribbean affords warm temperatures year-round, with the average lows in Havana dipping to 65 degrees. Because of its location, there are really only two seasons in Havana: wet and dry. The dry season runs through "winter" in Cuba, (November to April) while the wet season (May to October) overlaps with hurricane season, making the likelihood of precipitation very high. But hurricanes in Cuba aren't common and if a storm of any kind were to strike, it would likely happen during August or September. Festivals of all kinds occur year-round. If you want to see Havana at its most colorful, visit in August during Carnival. If you want to see the city at its most political, attend the International Workers' Day at Revolution Square in Havana in May, where a speech is made by the president annually.

On the south coast of central Cuba is Cienfuegos , the so-called "Pearl of the South" , which stands out for its fantastic historic center and its amalgam of artistic styles that can be differentiated in its architectures, such as in the Ferrer Palace where the eclectic style and neo rococo. You will walk through the Martí Park , located in the historic center of Cienfuegos , or the Boulevard de Cienfuegos that has different stalls and shops, or you will watch the sunset while you walk along the Malecón . 

In addition, June has much more to offer apart from sun and incredible beaches, as it is a month full of activities and culture.

During the week of June 11 to 18 , the European Film Festival is held in Havana where different films and documentaries from different countries of the European Union are exhibited, awarded with a prize or nomination. This festival is not only about cinema, but also different music concerts are held and includes an exhibition of film posters.

The week of June 11-13 , Matanzas hosts the International Rum Festival where the best rums in the world are exhibited, where the best international producers and distributors of this delicious drink congregate. This festival includes rum tastings where you will perfectly savor the different areas of Cuba through its rum. 

Trinidad hosts the Sanjuaneras Festivities, also known as the Trinidad Carnival, during the week of June 24-28. The streets of Trinidad are filled with color and life due to the floats, parades, and distractions that flood the city with their music to the beat of the drum. In addition, you cannot miss the horseback rides that the inhabitants of Trinidad do .

Havana, during the week from June 19 to June 24, hosts one of its most popular events, the International Festival of Golden Boleros. This wonderful festival commemorates the birth of this musical genre, the bolero, which was born in Cuba at the end of the XIX century and important interpreters, musicologists and composers joined.

During the week of June 24 to 29, one of the most important festivals in all of Cuba is celebrated: the Camagüey Carnival. As is usual in all carnivals in the Cuban country, Camagüey is filled with bright colors and a festive atmosphere that will leave you speechless. Its comparsas, colorful floats and lively parades with their typical dances such as the conga will leave you impressed.

At the end of June, you cannot miss the famous Cucalambeana Day , held in Las Tunas. Each year, the tradition revolves around important Cuban figures, although originally it was celebrated to pay tribute to the excellent Cuban poet Juan Cristóbal Napoles y Fajardo . In addition, you will have the opportunity to learn the Cuban peasant traditions and enjoy countless activities related to the most traditional Cuban customs.

In the week of June 24 to 29 , the feast of San Juan Bautista takes place in Camagüey . It is a patronal feast that has an immense cultural tradition, since the birth of Saint John the Baptist is celebrated by Christianity. This tradition also revolves around agriculture and livestock, so the beautiful carriages with horses walk through the streets of this spectacular city.. 

If you are passionate about everything circus, you will not want to miss the Circuba Summer Festival . This impressive event takes place in mid-June in the Cuban capital, Havana . You will enjoy internationally renowned artists and performances such as tightrope walk, tightrope or trapeze acts. In addition, this spectacular event fuses the traditional and contemporary circus that, without a doubt, will leave you in awe.

The famous Fire Festival , held in Santiago de Cuba , will be another event that you will not want to miss. You can dance to the rhythm of the most traditional Cuban music and dress in their typical costumes in this fun event that exudes a festive Cuban atmosphere on all four sides. You will also celebrate its origins, since each year, this spectacular party is dedicated to a Latin American country.

Its spectacular paradisiacal beaches bathed by the Caribbean Sea will make your trip an unforgettable experience. Among them are the Varadero Beach or also called the Blue Beach of Cuba ; It is located in Matanzas , and it is one of the best known on the entire island, in addition to having more than 20 kilometers. Located just 10 kilometers from the heart of Trinidad , you will enjoy Playa Ancón , which, thanks to its impressive landscapes, was declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO . Another spectacular key is Cayo Jutías , located northwest of Cuba , in the Archipelago of Los Colorados . It is one of the most unspoiled - and at the same time most peaceful - on the entire island. Join us to learn about the 2025 J-Term course The Role of Tourism in Cuba and Its Effect on Cuban Society during an information session from 11:45 a.m. to 12:15 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 19, in Lentz Hall 420.

This study tour is a unique experience to visit Cuba and learn about the role of tourism and its effect on Cuban society.

It is designed to enhance students’ global perspectives by exploring the impact of socialism on Cuba and the similarities and differences between the Cuban and U.S. political, economics, and social systems. Students will learn about life in Cuba through its traditions, music, dances, art, food, gender roles, and language in this diverse culture that includes a mixture of Spanish, African, and Caribbean cultures. 

Students will engage with Cuban citizens in a wide variety of settings, including cities like Havana and rural areas. Other destinations include Viñales, Soroa, Playa Ancon, Topes de Collantes, and Trinidad.  

This course fulfills the IDP requirements.

How to make the most of US federal holidays in 2025

The 9-to-5 grind might not be optional, but how you plan your paid time off (PTO) is.   

By adding a few vacation days to a long weekend, you can carve out enough leave for a big trip or two. And since your time is precious, we’ve already worked out the best times and places to go so you don’t have to. 

Key dates:  

• New Year’s Day: Take off 30 to 31 December 2024 and 2 to 3 January for a 9-day vacation. 
• Presidents’ Day: Take off 18 to 21 February for a nine-day vacation. 
• Memorial Day: Take off 27 to 30 May for a nine-day vacation. 
• Independence Day: Take off 30 June to 3 July for a nine-day vacation. 
• Labour Day: Take off 2 to 5 September for a nine-day vacation. 
• Veteran’s Day: Take off 10 and 12 to 14 of November for a nine-day vacation.  
• Thanksgiving: Take off 24 and 26 to 28 of November for a nine-day vacation.

January – New Year’s Day  

Let’s be honest – when the holidays end, we all could use another vacation. After spending so much time with friends and family, it’s only natural to crave a break that’s entirely within your control. If you take off 30 to 31 December and 2 to 3 January, you’ll bookend New Year’s Day and get a full nine days of leave.  

Spend that time exploring national parks and relaxing on beaches in Costa Rica or perhaps meeting Buddhist monks in a Cambodian monastery – both of which will make for great stories when the inevitable ‘how were your holidays?’ question pops up at work.  

February – Presidents’ Day  

Presidents’ Day is a nice break in February – but you can make it even nicer by using four PTO days to get nine days off. Just lock in leave from the 18 to 21 February and you could be taking salsa lessons and cooking classes in Cuba . Or head to the Galapagos Islands to catch the breeding season – think sea turtles laying eggs and birds showing off their courtship moves.   

May – Memorial Day  

Start as you mean to go on this summer by turning four days of PTO into a nine-day adventure. By booking off the days after Memorial Day – 27 to 30 May – you’ll have more time to travel to a faraway place.  

Would you like to spend a night camping under the stars in the Sahara Desert or retracing the steps of the Incas in Peru ? Or maybe you want to experience a long summer day in Iceland ? Well, now’s the perfect time to make it happen.

July – Independence Day  

You can make your Fourth of July celebrations last a little bit longer by setting your OOO from 30 June to 3 July. With nine days off, you can visit some of the most iconic landmarks in the USA, like Yellowstone National Park and Grand Teton National Park , or head to Canada and discover the beauty of the Canadian Rockies . If Europe is calling, a trip around Croatia in July won’t disappoint either. 

September – Labor Day  

Put off saying goodbye to summer by leave-hacking Labor Day and turning a three-day weekend into a nine-day vacation.  

The start of September is the perfect time to visit Italy – throw a penny into the Trevi fountain and cruise the canals of Venice with fewer crowds than peak summer. Or immerse yourself in local life by staying with a family in a Thai village . Don’t want to get your passport out? You’ve got Yosemite National Park on your doorstep, ready to be explored.  

November – Veterans Day and Thanksgiving Day  

November presents you with two opportunities for longer leave (and a chance to fend off those winter blues). Take off 10 and 12 to 14 November or 24 to 26 and 28 November– both options give you a solid nine-day break.  

What can you do with nine free days in November, you ask? How about floating in the Dead Sea without getting scorched by the sun or pursuing the northern lights in Iceland ? Or you can learn about history while you wander the ancient sites in Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula . You decide!  

December – Christmas Day  

You’ve made it through another year, so celebrate with a well-deserved break from the daily grind. With Christmas Day already off, add 22, 24 and 26 December for a nine-day vacation. Bring history to life for your little ones by exploring the pyramids in Egypt when it’s more temperate, or soak up the sun and live your best Bali beach life.
