Texas is one place where all the clichés are true. Everything really is bigger in Texas. From the portions of BBQ and Tex/Mex to the wide expanse of sky over rugged terrain, the Lone Star State doesn’t disappoint.

Although modern cities dot the vast landscape, Texas has proudly stayed true to its wild roots. In San Antonio they still “Remember the Alamo” and you can walk the same paths as folk hero’s James Bowie and Davy Crockett. A river runs through this amazing city and you can stroll or take a boat ride to visit the stores and restaurants that line the water.

For a taste of the unusual, visit the quirky city of Austin where locals abide by their small business motto to “keep Austin weird.” Food trucks of all shapes and sizes sell every possible delicacy from cupcakes to the famous Torchy’s Tacos. On Rainey Street, houses have been converted into bars, which makes you feel like you are attending an intimate backyard party with close friends, even if you don’t know a soul! Going out on the infamous 6th Street isn’t for the faint of heart. Two step your way over to Dallas and catch a rowdy rodeo where the collegial atmosphere will remind you that the Texas state motto is “Friendship.”

Texas is bursting with outdoor adventure opportunities as well. With 16 national parks and over 350 miles of coastline, it’s easy to escape for a much needed dose of Mother Nature.

For the most up-to-date information on licensure requirements and fees, visit the Texas Board of Nursing website or contact them at (512) 305-7400 .

Licensure Requirements

Since Texas has enacted the Nurse Licensure Compact , you won’t need to get a state-specific nursing license to work there if you already have a multistate license in another compact state if you are a travel nurse.

However, if you are a nurse who currently lives in a compact state and intends to establish permanent residency in another compact state, you will need to apply for  licensure by endorsement within 60 days of relocating. This law does not apply to travel nurses and will become enforced on January 2nd, 2024.

If you are a travel nurse and your primary license is in a non-compact state, you are required to apply for licensure by endorsement. To complete this process, you must have:

  • Graduated from an approved licensed LPN, LVN, or RN program; or
  • Either worked in nursing or taken the US NCLEX ® exam no more than four years before the application

To apply for a licensure by endorsement you must:

  • Submit an online application and pay the fee
  • Provide a background check with fingerprints
  • Take the Nursing Jurisprudence Examination
  • Request a verification of licensure via Nursys Ⓡ

You are ineligible to apply for licensure by endorsement if:

  • You have ever held a Texas nursing license
  • You didn’t graduate from an approved nursing program; or
  • You haven’t taken a national nursing licensing examination

While you are waiting for your application to be processed, the Texas Board of Nursing (BON) will give you a one-time, 120-day temporary license. This licensure will be issued once your fingerprints and verification have been received by the BON. Temporary licenses are only issued once a lifetime and may not be renewed or extended.

You can apply online for a license by endorsement here .

Licensure Fees

The application fee for licensure by endorsement in Texas is $150, coupled with a $72 Nursing Jurisprudence Examination fee. All fees are non-refundable.

Nurse Licensure Compact Status

Texas has been a part of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC) since January 19, 2018.

Is Texas a Walk-Through State?

Texas is not a walk-through state.

Texas nurses are required to:

1. Complete 20 contact hours of continuing education every two years; or

2. Demonstrate the achievement, maintenance, or renewal of a Board-approved national nursing certification in the nurse’s area of practice within the licensing period.

Interested in the numbers regarding Texas travel nurse pay? Qualified travel nurses receive an average base salary of about $2,002 per week , which is close to the national average
