  • Chevron down TripAdvisor Pricing

For the best pricing please book directly from our website!

Tripadvisor decided unilaterally and without prior notice to operators to increase retail prices on excursions, activities and experiences. The objective is to get a 25% commission for each booking.

It means that, when you book through this platform, 25% of the price that you are paying is going directly to them. It is not operators who are increasing prices, of course, our net prices maintain the same.

That’s why we want to encourage you to book directly with operators, the same way that you book directly with hotels, restaurants and others. When you book via third parties, part of the money is for these third parties. We could understand this as a fair game in exchange for publicity if the rates were fair, but 25% is unacceptable, even more, when it is the final customer who is paying for the extra fees.

A Tour of Tucson’s Best Breweries

April Pishna | December 11, 2023 October 16, 2021 | Adventures , Breweries and Beer , Craft Beer Tourist , Craft Breweries , Featured , Travel

As many RVers and birds do, we followed suit and headed south for the winter. Tucson, Arizona, that is. And for the first time, we stayed longer than a few days, a month, actually. Which gave us plenty of time to explore the breweries and mountain biking trails in Tucson.

And there’s plenty to explore. With around 20 breweries, several noteworthy restaurants, and hundreds of miles of trails, Tucson is much more than just a vast desert with cacti and tumbleweeds blowing in the wind.

brewery tour tucson

And speaking of cacti, they are quite majestic. From the squat barrel cactus to the mighty Saguaro, and all the creatures that make this stark desert come to life. And did I mention the sunsets? The glorious colors that race across the desert sky are almost as glorious as the breweries here.

Neighborhood Tucson Brewery Tours

And with so many breweries, how do you know which ones to visit? All of them, of course. But, if you can’t, what then? Searching “breweries near me” in Tucson can simply overwhelm you. We’ve done the footwork for you and broken down the many Tucson breweries by their neighborhoods, so you can visit as many as you want within the time you’ve got.

Did we visit all of them? Most, but not all. Our livers need a break every once in a while. So, while we did not visit all of them, we did do our best to list and link all of them. If you decide you want to visit all of them, well, hopefully we made that task a little bit easier for your brain to handle.

PRO TIP:   Many small breweries are closed Sun-Weds. They also generally don’t open until late afternoon, so plan accordingly. Oh, and then COVID can come into play, so whatever hours may be listed on Apple or Google Maps may or may not be correct. Your best bet is to simply make a phone call and ask.

Our Tucson, Arizona, Brewery Tour

We’ll tell you what we recommend and our favorites based off of beer, ambiance, and more. What we won’t tell you is where not to go. Everyone has differing opinions on what creates a favorite place for them and there are so many subjective components that come into play when choosing favorite breweries.

If we visit a brewery and the flavor profiles of the beer there are not what our palates are looking for at that time, we’re not going to tell you it’s a bad brewery. But if a brewery has beer that has something off, such as spoilage or poorly made qualities based off of what beer is supposed to be, we’ll tell you that.

Otherwise, you’ll have to embark upon your own Tucson brewery tour. Figuring out your favorites is the fun part. We’re simply here to get you started.

The key to our faves: 🍺 🍺 🍺 Our favorites – Honestly, we loved all the breweries, but everyone has favorites, including us.

Which of Tucson’s best breweries are near me?

(Tucson breweries listed by neighborhood)

Catalina Brewing Company and Button Brew House are located in the Northern part of Tucson, south of Marana.

Dragoon Brewing Company, Dillinger Brewing Company (out of business as of October 2023), and 1912 Brewing Company are all located in the El Rio Acres area in Northern Tucson.

Firetruck Brewing Company (formerly Sentinel Peak Brewing Company) and one of the two Iron John’s Brewing locations are located in Eastern Tucson near the University of Arizona. The Address (1702) Brewing went out of business in May of 2022.

Borderlands Brewing, Crooked Tooth Brewing, and Corbett Brewing are located in the Warehouse Arts District.

Tucson’s Congress Street District in Central Downtown is an embarrassment of riches when it comes to breweries. Pueblo Vida Brewing is the crown jewel in our opinion, but is joined by Thunder Canyon Brewstillery, another great brewery. The Iron John’s Brewing location on Congress Street is now Juniper, a gin-focused cocktail bar and Ten55 Brewing ceased operations on January 24, 2023. Voltron Brewing is a joint venture between Borderlands Brewing and Fire Truck Brewing. They have a small taproom serving beers from both breweries located a few blocks southeast of Pueblo Vida Brewing and Thunder Canyon Brewstillery.

The South Central Industrial District in Tucson is home to Arizona’s oldest brewery, Barrio Brewing, and one of the state’s newest, and one of our favorites, MotorSonora Brewing. It is also home to one of the two Iron John’s Brewery locations.

Southeastern Tucson is home to Copper Mine Brewing, Harbottle Brewing, and Blackrock Brewers

Northern Tucson (south of Marana)

Catalina Brewing Company 🍺🍺🍺 We had already been in Tucson for over three weeks, when we first came across this little gem. We’ve since returned several times. Tucked away in a business park, this bike-themed brewery was a perfect fit for our bike-themed travels.

While we love visiting breweries with friends, when it’s just the two of us, there’s more chance of starting conversations with the beertenders….and brewers…and owners. It’s why we always say, “Say hi to a stranger…especially while sitting at a bar.”

brewery tour tucson

A brewery that states they have handcrafted bike fuel is a brewery for us. That along with a shower in the bathroom – hey, could we end up here after a bike ride and take a quick shower? – We love small breweries, and this one with bikes, pinball games galore, and good beer. It’s got it all.

We missed Button Brew House 🍺🍺🍺 on our first brewery tour of Tucson. We have since rectified that situation and are certainly glad that we did. Button has great beer and a community-minded, welcoming atmosphere with lots of indoor space and a large outdoor area, as well.

All of the Button Brew House beers we’ve tried have been good, but a couple standouts were their Chiltepín Red (a slightly spicy Irish Red Ale) and their American Muscle Milk (a hoppy American strong ale). They also have multiple variations of Micheladas, as well as several beer blends, mixing different combos and percentages of their various beers.

Beer Bar / Bottle Shop Bonus!

Not far from Catalina Brewing Company and Button Brew House is a great beer bar called Caps & Corks . This is a gem among Beer Bars and Bottle Shops. Caps & Corks has around 25 well curated taps with an amazing variety from around the country and sometimes a few international options. In addition to a fantastic tap wall, Caps & Corks has multiple coolers, again with some stunning selections from across the country and the globe, for purchase both on-site and to-go. They also carry some wonderful wines and meads.

Northern Tucson (El Rio Acres)

Dragoon Brewing Company – We were quite impressed with Dragoon’s selection, offering a wide variety of different and more obscure styles of beer. Again, choosing a seat at the bar, conversations ran rampant, and the night was a success. Good beer will do that for you.

brewery tour tucson

We eventually made it to Dillinger Brewing Company , but sadly, not before they closed down. We tried to visit the taproom on East Ninth Street, only to discover we had arrived a few days after Dillinger’s last day of operations on October 31, 2023. A new beer focused bar called Traxide Taproom had already taken over the East Ninth Street space, which included the final brewing efforts of Dillinger, so we at least tasted some of the fine beverages they had been making.

We were told by a former Dillinger employee that they sold their brewing equipment and some sour-focused recipes to local restaurant chain Serial Grillers, which intended to start brewing under the name Mosaic Brewing at Dillinger’s original production location on Oracle. We were also told that fellow Tucson brewery Borderlands bought several other recipes and other Dillinger’s intellectual property.

We haven’t yet made it to Dillinger Brewing Company nor 1912 Brewing Company , so you’ll have to let us know how they are when you visit or we’ll update you when we do. We’ve heard great things about both.

Eastern Tucson (University of Arizona)

Eastern Tucson is home to a couple of good, straightforward breweries: Firetruck Brewing Company (formerly Sentinel Peak Brewing Company) and one of two Iron John’s Brewing Company locations. Both make good beer, but don’t generally stray too far off the traditional craft beer path. The Address (1702) Brewing was also located in Eastern Tucson near the University of Arizona, but has gone out of business.

Northern Downtown (Warehouse Arts District)

Crooked Tooth Brewing Company 🍺🍺🍺 This is one of our favorite breweries in Tucson. From the second you walk in the door, there’s this community vibe. With barn doors that open up to the street, you get the feeling of being in a large space with all the cozy comforts of a small brewery.

Their brews are just as beautiful and unique as their space. You’ll have to taste their Sonoran Sour Series of beers even if you classify yourself as not-a-sour fan. They are quite good. Oh, and talk about creative. How about a flight served on a skateboard? Yep!

brewery tour tucson

Hungry? Right across the alley is arguably one of the best pizza places in Tucson, Anello . Serving authentic focaccia, Italian pies and freshly baked sourdough bread. Order some pies and bring it on in to Crooked Tooth. Quite possibly one of the best meals paired with some of the best beers you’ll ever have.

Borderlands Brewing Company 🍺🍺🍺 Managing to be both rustic and industrial, Borderlands has a style all its own. Located right next to the railroad tracks, the train might rattle your brain every once in a while as it passes by, but that’s just all a part of the ambiance here.

brewery tour tucson

With an expansive patio and wide open taproom, this is a great place to spend a sunny afternoon hanging out drinking all the wonderful beers they have to offer. Combine those beers with some street tacos from their on-site food truck and this meal might rival the pizza one from above.

Borderlands is within walking distance of Crooked Tooth and Corbett Brewing, which are located within a couple blocks of each other. And for more food and drinks, check out Bison Witches . This is a kick-ass bar and sandwich shop that is chock-full of character. Hungry or not, you must eat a sandwich from here. So good! Oh, and these places are all within a mile from each other. Speaking of walking, it’s just about a mile to walk to the next group of breweries just south of here. Put your walking shoes on and make a day (or two) of it.

brewery tour tucson

But wait, there’s more to drink here. Wine! Yes, we drink wine. And if you do, too. Check out Revel Wine Bar . Cozy, cute, artistic. They specialize in European wines, and they are oh so good! We even wrote a poem while there. It was quite magical.

brewery tour tucson

Central Downtown (Congress Street District)

Iron John’s Brewing Company had three taprooms in the Tucson area. The one we checked out was on Congress Street, but that location has since become a gin-focused bar called Juniper. The existing Iron John’s Brewing locations are on East Broadway in Eastern Tucson and near Barrio in the Industrial District of South Central Tucson.

brewery tour tucson

Speaking of Congress, be sure to take a stroll around this neighborhood. There are many restaurants and bars to choose from and murals to check out. In fact, Tucson is full of art everywhere you look. It’s the art here that creates a vibrance in this big city, making it feel homey and eclectic.

brewery tour tucson

Catch a show at the historic Hotel Congress and afterwards pull up a stool at the bar for some evening entertainment. We caught a punk rock show here, and made some interesting friends sipping on cocktails inside the bar. That’s how one visits Congress Street.

Pueblo Vida Brewing Company 🍺🍺🍺 Just around the corner from Juniper (formerly) Iron John’s, you’ll find the master of Hazy IPAs on the Tucson beer scene, along with a community vibe that will keep you coming back here just to say hi.

Pueblo Vida has done a fantastic job of revitalizing a historic building. It’s wooden decor is both inviting and warm. If you love cycling, you can even store your bikes inside while grabbing that much deserved pint. Yoga classes, bike rides, cornhole tournaments, they do it all.

brewery tour tucson

Ten55 Brewing Company – Was a good Tucson brewpub with a solid variety of craft beers and excellent grub coupled with a cool patio space with outdoor seating primed for people watching. Sadly, Ten55 ceased operations in January 24, 2023. One of the many casualties in the maturing American craft beer market.

brewery tour tucson

Thunder Canyon Brewstillery – After spending most of the morning working at the coffee shop nearby, the Cartel Coffee Lab, we had to stop at the brewery. It was right next door. The second we walked in we knew this was a place to hang, drink some beer or rum, and eat some food. The people there made this place very memorable. Not only do they make their own brews, but they also make their own rum.

brewery tour tucson

The old brick building gave the brewery a nostalgic vibe. With art throughout, a front patio and people that love what they do, this brewery should definitely be on your Tucson brewery tour.

Voltron Brewing is a joint effort combining the forces of Borderlands Brewing and Fire Truck Brewing with a small taproom just a few blocks southeast of Pueblo Vida Brewing and Thunder Canyon Brewstillery.

From here, head out to dinner with friends at El Charro on Court. While this is closer to the Warehouse Arts District than downtown, it’s only a short drive away. Serving Sonoran style food, Micheladas, and prickly pear margaritas…in a century old quaint home…YUM!

brewery tour tucson

South Central Tucson (Industrial District)

Barrio Brewing Company – Looking for a place with both food and beer, a group of us came upon Barrio. Just across the railroad tracks – I’d say on the right side of them – this Tucson brewery has a huge patio out front facing the street and plenty of room to sit and eat and drink inside, as well.

With 12 taps to choose from, we chose flights to sample them all, and enjoyed some amazing appetizers and conversations amongst friends. The rustic sports bar like environment is right up our alley when looking for dinner with drinks.

brewery tour tucson

MotoSonora Brewing Company 🍺🍺🍺 – We can’t say enough about this place. Started from two brothers’ love of overlanding in South Africa and drinking beer around a campfire, they hooked us from the beginning. So much so, that we even came back and recorded a podcast with Jeremy (owner) and Joel (brewer).

brewery tour tucson

With firepits strategically located throughout their huge backyard beer garden, damn good beer, live music, friends, an on-site diner style food truck and even a dog run, this place was one of our favorites. Yeah, it’s a bit out there, but nothing in Tucson is really that far. Make sure you’re sober and drive your butts to MotoSonora.

We think you’ll love MotoSonora place as much as we do!

Southeastern Tucson

Copper Mine Brewing Company – This little brewery may not have other breweries surrounding it. It doesn’t even have a patio nor a quaint historical building to call home. But what it does have is fantastic beer, a good variety of it, and people who love to make the beer and serve the beer. That’s all it takes to get us in the door.

brewery tour tucson

Harbottle Brewing Company – Micheladas at a brewery? In Tucson, duh! These are billed as two handed ones, too – with all the stuff. It’s almost a beer. And speaking of beer, it’s a brewery. They’ve got that, too, in this neighborhood taproom.

From traditional styles to their sour program to their barrel project, you’ll find the beer you want here and the people you love to drink it with.

brewery tour tucson

We didn’t make it to Blackrock Brewers , so you’ll have to let us know how it is when you visit.

Where’s the Bike Trails?

If you’re wondering about the hundreds of trails I mentioned in the Tucson area, stay tuned. We’ve got a lot of video footage and a write-up heading your way, soon.

brewery tour tucson

In the meantime, check out Tucson Mountain Park or Enchanted Hills or Sweetwater Preserve. Use Trailforks to get you started. And at least you know where to drink when you’re done riding.

All the Tucson Breweries

As mentioned above, we didn’t make it to ALL the Tucson area breweries but we want to make it easy for you to do so. So, here are all the breweries for your enjoyment. The ones we visited have an asterisk next to them, and as you may have read above, you can experience a bit of our story while visiting each of them.

T ucson, Arizona, the land of cacti, snakes, sun and… beer? Yes! Tucson is a fantastic city to visit if you are looking for a craft beer tour. With a budding craft brewery scene, and plenty of options within the city limits, there are many taprooms for you and your friends to pop in for a drink or two before heading to the next place, or sit down, sip and stay for a few hours.

Going on a craft beer tour here can be a lot of fun for couples, friends, and families – even those with kids as many Tucson breweries have a kids food menu, as well as activities for them to enjoy while mom and dad have a well-deserved beer.

Plus, what makes Tucson special on the craft beer scene is the local elements and ingredients they use such as desert fruits and herbs.

So we’ve decided to do our good deed of the day and give you a virtual tour of Tucson breweries, showing you the best to visit, which beers you must try and more! Afterall, what sounds better than sipping a nice cold beer after a day exploring sunny Arizona!

Why Tucson breweries are the best in Arizona

Tucson is known for being a young, hip town, and trends that sweep across the nation definitely make their way through this city and leave their mark. What we’ve discovered is that when it comes to craft beer, that trend-setting happens here too.

The breweries here always have their ear to the ground when it comes to invention and experimentation in the brewing business. That innovation has bred competition and created a craft beer boom in Tucson, and the result is superb beers that are unlike anywhere else in the world. And with no major brewery taking over the craft beer niche here, Tucson is perfect for people like us who love a city brewery tour.

Our Top Six Tucson Breweries

There are tons of breweries throughout Tucson that you can visit. However for us, there’s six breweries that really stand out. A visit to any (or all!) of these six is sure to make your trip to Tucson extra special:

Borderlands Brewing Company

Known for their excellent craft brews, Borderlands Brewing is especially famous for their delicious German Chocolate Cake Port er, considered to be one of the best craft beers in the state. This place is hoppin’ (see what we did there….) as it often hosts live music, beer festivals and art exhibitions, and is popular with students studying at the nearby University of Arizona campus.

We’ll get more to beer in a minute, but we also have to mention the setting. The brewery is located within an old industrial train depot – it’s rustic, atmospheric and the interior is full of character. So full of character that some believed the building is haunted.

Don’t let that put you off going though, as the beer is exceptional.

This is a true desert brewery, so you will be able to sip year-round on beers that are derived from local spices, fruits, and herbs. Try their Cashmere Cactus Pale Ale for something special.

If you’re looking for great beer created in a unique location and in a fun and friendly setting, then look no further.

Address : 119 E Toole Ave

Wandering our World recommends: Cashmere Cactus Pale Ale

1912 Brewing Company

This is a low-key, unpretentious brewery, and the result is homely original beers brewed and served in a welcoming environment, as well as frequent tap takeovers and beer-themed events and activities.

1912 has humble beginnings, having started out in the garage of the cofounders. The aim was to create a beer that was a homage to Arizona – from that, 1912 Brewing Company (named after the year Arizona achieved statehood) was born.

Using only local ingredients and with a rotating tap of their own craft creations, alongside guest local beers and wine, you will get a true taste of Tucson here.

Inside the brewery are exhibitions by local artists, while outside you can find food trucks. By coming here for a drink you’re actually getting a cultural tour of Tucson, with street food and art thrown in. They often host charity nights too, with a portion of the sales going to local and statewide nonprofits.

With over 20 beers on tap and some snacks available to munch on while you drink, this is the perfect place to relax while playing bar games or watching sports.

They’re constantly updating their drink menu so be sure to check out their website before heading over. However our favorites include Ta Weno , an amber ale with notes of caramel and toffee, and Weiz the Hell Not , a traditional German style wheat beer with notes of banana and clove.

Address : 2045 N. Forbes Blvd

Wandering our World recommends: Weiz the Hell Not

brewery tour tucson

Barrio Brewing Company

Founded by a husband-and-wife duo, Barrio Brewing Company is actually one of the first craft breweries in Arizona. Even though this is the state’s third largest independent brewer, there is a unique homey vibe here that you will experience as soon as you walk in.

You can find classic options like amber and pale ales, but also some lovely distinctive flavors like a coffee-based stout and a Scottish ale that was a 2016 American Beer Festival Silver Medal Winner. That award-winning ale, the Barrio Rojo , has some wonderful caramelized malt tones and just a hint of toffee. It’s an exceptional craft beer.

Open seven days a week, they do food and drinks to go but we recommend staying for a while. There’s an added bonus to staying too – due to the brewery’s proximity to some rumbling train tracks, whenever the train crossing guards are down, your drinks are discounted!

All in all, we’ve found this to be a great place for families and gatherings. They have a full lunch and dinner menu, so you will never go hungry while enjoying their delicious IPAs.

Address : 800 E 16th St

Wandering our World recommends: Barrio Rojo

Dragoon Brewing Company

Dragoon Brewing got into the craft beer business early, and is an exciting growing tap house which also happens to be one of the few Tucson breweries that ships their products throughout Arizona. Thankfully it’s still possible to try their fantastic beers from a cozy taproom in Tucson, where the conversation flows as much as the beer.

They have a flagship IPA – the Dragoon IPA – that really put them on the craft brewing map, but they also make other, equally amazing, beers. However what you’ll find, is that they brew three particular beers all year round, whi lst their other offerings are speciality beers that they often brew just once a year. What that essentially means, is you can come here and grab a drink and could be the last one who tastes that beer for months.

One of the mainstays is the Santa Cruz’R which is a pale, refreshing golden ale. If it’s available try the Tartan 479 – a lovely Belgian style blonde ale with a subtle fruity taste. A portion of the sale of every Tartan 479 goes towards the Tucson Fire Department’s Pipes and Drums Corps, so you’ll be doing some good as you drink.

We also recommend trying a pint of their award winning sour barleywine beer Lazarus . It’s creation was a result of a mistake, but what a great mistake it was! You will taste a dark-fruit flavoring that’s unique to this brew.

Crooked Teeth

Located in an old mechanics shop, this Tucson brewery initially looks like it exists in a hole in the wall, however it opens up into a large open patio and seating area which is perfect for enjoying the rotating menu of Crooked Teeth originals on tap.

This quirky brewery hosts trivia nights, pop-up markets, and sometimes live music making it easy to spend several hours here enjoying the fun and laid-back atmosphere. An added bonus is that next door there is an artisanal pizza place called ‘Anello’s’. Pizza and craft beer tonight? Has anyone in the history of humankind ever said no to that!

As for what to try, make sure you taste Three Word Beer Name . This IPA is usually on tap and has notes of melon and mango. Special mention has to go to their imperial porter, Barrel Aged Wiracocha Moon – this strong beer has notes of chocolate and vanilla.

Pueblo Vida Brewing

Pueblo Vida Brewing is housed in a historic building on Broadway in downtown Tucson, and it’s easy to forget your in a taproom as the whole interior has the feeling of a stylish low-key bar.

The brewers here work hard to perfect their regular beers, but they’re also known for experimental infusions where their standards barrels are mixed with an extra ingredient to create a unique one-time only batch. For us, there’s nothing better than sipping on a craft beer knowing it’s a one-barrel edition.

As for what to try, get your hands on their Microburst Pale Ale which has some lovely subtle tropical and citrus notes. For a lager choice, we enjoyed their Sommer – a soft Helles-Style lager.

If you’re looking to enjoy more than just Pueblo Vida Brewing’s delicious beers, you can join in on some of the events they hold like yoga classes and beer release parties.

The Best Time Of The Year To Visit Tucson Breweries

Of course, nothing beats drinking a beer on a patio while you enjoy wonderful weather, and with Arizona famously known as being a hot, dry state, craft beer and Arizona go hand in hand.

While you can enjoy a Tucson beer tour at any time of the year, the best time to plan a visit to Tucson is usually from April to May and September to October. Known as “shoulder season,” there are comfortable and pleasant outdoor temperatures during these months.

If you are trying to avoid winter in the northern United States, then a trip to Tucson may suit you as the temperatures are more mild here than elsewhere. However hotels and rentals get booked up fast so make sure you reserve in advance.

If you want the least amount of crowds (and typically the cheapest rooms), then the hotter summer months might be perfect. However no matter the time of year, we know you will have a great time touring round Tucson’s best breweries.

Without question, worth a Saturday afternoon and the cost. Three microbreweries with a flight of four 6 oz pours at each. Safe and entertaining transportation between them. Ooh, and learn a bit about the Tucson craft beer scene and history of beer making from your host and driver Hector. Absolutely a great time. Talk to them about private tours or just sign up for a random afternoon and have a great time and enjoy some really great beers while supporting local businesses!

Photo of Amanda M.

The amazing tour guide, Hector, will make sure you feel like you get your money's worth, whether you take a public or private tour. Safe transportation between breweries on an air conditioned shuttle bus is provided. Snacks and bottle water are also provided between stops. Brewery stops include some beer education/trivia, flights of 4 beers, and behind the scenes tours when possible. They do private tours for birthdays and retirement parties and even do private dive bar tours.

Photo of Angie O.

Hired them for a private party to tour Tucson hot spots. Great going away party for friends moving out of state. They were amazing hosts, provided water bottles and were patient as we organized our unruly group of 16! I highly recommend Hector as a host to show off all of our unique breweries! Great concept, great fun!!

Photo of Becky G.

I can't believe I'm the first reviewer! My husband and I had a fantastic time this Saturday. We got to visit four breweries and shared lots of laughs along the way. The owners are so friendly and welcoming, I felt like we had known them forever by the end of the tour. I thoroughly enjoyed myself and can't wait for my next Saturday off! Or maybe we'll have Hector set up a private tour on another day. I'm sure I can come up with a special occasion!!

Essential Arizona beer tour: 12 Tucson breweries

In elegant taprooms and boisterous bars, tucson brewers make beers, ales to savor..

The Public Brewhouse nanobrewery is a little hard to find, tucked in a small warehouse (or is it a huge shed?) just off busy Fourth Avenue. But it’s well worth finding, thanks to its adventurous menu of beers.

Not so long ago in a cantina just down the street, patrons would have scoffed at traveling more than a mile or two for a cold beer. Every bar carried the finest brews available, everything from lagers to light lagers. Who could possibly want more?

When the 1970s (and early '80s) finally went away, they took with them a taste for disco, ill-conceived mustaches and boring beer.

Today, people will go not just a few miles out of their way for a quality ale, but to another city entirely in search of craft beers meant to tantalize, even challenge, taste buds.

In the past few years, the thirst for locally brewed beer has exploded like a shaken can of India Pale Ale. Arizona brims with brewers producing stouts, ales and porters one precious vat at a time.

A decade ago, you'd need a few hours and a couple gallons of gas to hit every joint crafting its own brew in a particular city.

Now it takes careful planning, an overnight stay and a solid hangover remedy. And don't forget the designated driver or ride-hailing app. There are no excuses for drinking and driving.

In the first of Explore Arizona's series of Essential Arizona Beer Tours, we chose Tucson because rock-paper-scissors said so. Coming up: beer tours of Flagstaff, Lake Havasu City and more.

Tucson is well worth the day trip

Ten Fifty Five Brewing

Welcome to a tempting taproom filled with character. Walk in and be embraced by the warm, cozy scent of malt with a hint of hops. The odor is intoxicating, but only in a metaphorical sense.

A little background: Ten Fifty-Five was started by a couple of guys who thought their beer was so good that complete strangers would not only like it but pay for it. Mission complete. Keep on eye on the website for news of a move. Owners are working on a Congress Street site, bringing the brewery into central Tucson. It's expected to be ready sometime this spring.

Stats: Four beers on tap: pale ale, wheat, stout, double IPA.

Food: Not available.

Highlight: The dark, creamy Sugar Skull stout goes down as smoothly as a chocolate bar thanks to its unexpectedly light body. Even if you're not a fan of stouts, odds are good you'll like this.

Distance to next microbrewery: 200 feet to Nimbus Brewing Co.

Details: 3810 E. 44th St. 520-461-8073, 1055brewing.com .

Dining around Arizona: 8 great restaurants in Tucson

Nimbus Brewing Co.

Like Ten Fifty-Five Brewing, Nimbus occupies an unlikely location in an industrial park. Great news for nearby workers, but visitors may need turn-by-turn directions from their smartphones.

A little background: Nimbus arrived in 1996, well before the market for craft beer took off. It has grown from modest taproom to one of the largest brewers in the state.

Stats: Six beers available: four ales (blonde, brown, red, pale), English pub beer, oatmeal stout.

Food: Burgers, wings, salads, sandwiches and Mexican; good variety to enhance what's on tap.

Highlight: Old Monkey Shine, the English pub beer, has a sweet, malty finish and hides its 8.2 percent alcohol by volume. (Most beers are in the 5-6 percent range.) Drink slowly. And responsibly.

Distance to next brewery: Four miles to Barrio Brewing Co.

Details: 3850 N. 44th St. 520-745-9175, www.nimbusbeer.com .

Barrio Brewing Co.

This beer-centric restaurant is an odd blend of industrial (exposed pipes, metal finishes) and earthy (woods with warm orange and red tones), and it works extremely well. Action centers around the U-shaped bar, with tables scattered about.

A little background: Barrio's beer roots go back to 1991 and Gentle Ben's, one of Tucson's first microbreweries. Barrio owner Dennis Arnold bought Ben's in 1991, and it now serves Barrio beer.

Stats: Nine beers available: seven ales (blonde, amber, pale, IPA, white IPA, Scottish, raspberry), wheat, stout.

Food: Extensive menu features appetizers, salads, burgers, sandwiches and "South of the Brewery" fare. Plenty to keep taste buds busy.

Highlight: You could almost swear the Mocha Java Stout was first brewed at Starbucks before it was infused with beer. The coffee and chocolate notes are robust, perfect for sipping by a fire. Unless it's, say, August. That's when you're even happier it's a cold beer rather than a hot beverage.

Distance to next brewery: Less than a mile to Thunder Canyon Brewery.

Details: 800 E. 16th St. 520-791-2739, barriobrewing.com .

Arizona craft beer: 29 breweries in the Phoenix area

Thunder Canyon Brewery

Occupying one of the larger footprints on the beer tour, Thunder Canyon caters to families as well beer enthusiasts. While khaki-clad men and skirt-adorned women enjoy happy hour in the bar, families cluster around the dozens of tables in the open, airy restaurant.

A little background: One of the first three microbreweries in Tucson, its defining moment arrived in 2013 when Thunder Canyon opened its 8,000-square-foot restaurant downtown, a larger version of its flagship restaurant in Foothills Mall.

Stats: With 40 beers on tap, a dozen taps typically are reserved for Thunder Canyon beers, including four ales (amber, cream, strong and IPA), pilsner, wheat and porter. Seasonal brews are available.

Food: A good balance of bar food and family-friendly entrees. Finish it off with the deep-dish cookie, served hot with ice cream. It's so good, you'll actually forego a beer to maintain room.

Highlight: Ask your server about the cask-conditioned beer. Beers fermented and aged in casks tend to have milder carbonation and fuller flavor. Cask-conditioning is a treat for beer enthusiasts.

Distance to next brewery: 500 feet to Pueblo Vida Brewing Co.

Details: 220 E. Broadway Blvd. 520-396-3480, thundercanyonbrewery.com .

Pueblo Vida Brewing Co.

If a beer tour had halftime, this would be the perfect place to spend it. The unpretentious taproom is quiet and serene during off-peak hours, when it's a pleasure to sit at the bar (capacity about 12) and chat with the bartender. Brewing equipment looms in the back, allowing a peek behind the brewing curtain.

A little background: Open less than two years, Pueblo Vida opened in a former clothing shop. It's run by University of Arizona graduate Kyle Jefferson, who earned his brewing cred in Seattle.

Stats: Four beers on tap: wheat, IPA, stout and a rotating seasonal (an IPA, more often than not).

Food: None.

Highlight: Ask about an infusion. Each week brewers choose a beer on tap and add a special ingredient. It could be chile pepper, an apple or a cucumber. They take suggestions. As long as your ingredient can be consumed, it will be considered. Anyone suggesting cauliflower or broccoli deserves disapproving looks.

Distance to next brewery: Half-mile to Borderlands Brewing Co.

Details: 115 E. Broadway Blvd. 520-623-7168, pueblovidabrewing.com .

Valley of the Moon: Magical piece of Tucson history

Borderlands Brewing Co.

Because it's built inside a historical produce warehouse, you can drink in Borderland's atmosphere as much as the beer. Even better, the earthy scents of hops and malt have vanquished any odor left over from previously stored vegetables.

A little background: Take a microbiologist, stir in a medical student, add a mutual interest in home brewing and bring to a boil. That's the recipe behind Borderlands, founded in 2010 by Michael Mallozzi (the microbiologist) and Myles Stone.

Stats: Six beers available: four ales (amber, Scottish, brown and IPA), wheat, vanilla porter.

Highlight: It's not just about the beer but helping the environment as well. The owners are committed to conserving water and electricity and use locally sourced ingredients.

Distance to next brewery: Three miles to Dragoon Brewing Co.

Details: 119 E. Toole Ave. 520-261-8773, borderlandsbrewing.com .

25 things to do this week around Arizona

Dragoon Brewing Co.

Dragoon has found much success since opening in 2012. Its original two-tap, six-seat bar is a distant memory. Dragoon now operates in a space that dwarfs the original, with 11 beers on tap and a great view of stainless steel vats brewing up goodness in the next room.

A little background: Twenty years ago, founder Bruce Greene brewed his first batch in his kitchen. Hobby grew to passion and eventually to a business when Greene, his son Eric and beer fanatic Tristan White opened Dragoon in 2012.

Stats: Dragoon established itself as a strong player with its superb IPA (and its Stronghold Session wasn't bad either). Now it brews as many as 30 beers a year, with stouts, porters and Belgian beers in the mix.

Food: None, but food trucks usually are on premises Wednesdays-Saturdays.

Highlight: While the IPA and session beers are exceptional, the beauty of dropping by is to see what seasonals are on tap. Best way to experience is by flight, allowing you to sample to your heart's content.

Distance to next brewery: Four miles to Public Brewhouse.

Details: 1859 W. Grant Road. 520-329-3606, dragoonbrewing.com .

Public Brewhouse

Apologies for doubling back, but this is the perfect place to bring the tour to an end. The Brewhouse is a beer-centric gem tucked in an alley just off Fourth Avenue. Slip through the sliding tin door and join a crowd that appreciates a fine brew with no pretensions.

A little background: A toast to Kickstarter, where 277 backers pledged more than $37,000 to bring the nano-brewery to life. The modest but funky brick-built shed provides just the right environment for the brewhouse's eclectic collection of beers. The taps change frequently, as noted by the many erase marks on the chalkboard menu.

Stats: Taps continually rotate based on brewers' moods, but expect a pale ale, a stout and at least one brew you'll want the bartender to explain, like the Pink Funk-N-Ade (sour ale with a fruity finish).

Highlight: Clearly there is no fear of experimentation, and small batches mean that even the fails (if there are any) don't stay around for long. Public Brewhouse is like a box of hoppy chocolate: You never know what you're going to get.

Distance to next brewery: It's over. You did it. Now thank your designated driver and get some sleep.

Details: 209 N. Hoff Ave. 520-775-2337, publicbrewhouse.com .

4 more breweries to sample

Did you finish early? Are you sticking around another day? Here are four more bars and taprooms worth a visit.

Iron John's: Welcome to a beer boutique. The small taproom reflects the mindset of brewers, who call this an "artisan" brewery. Like Public Brewhouse, Iron John's brews in small batches. Enjoy a 1-ounce sample or a 14-ounce glass, with sizes in between. Fill a growler or take home a six-pack or case.

Details: 245 S. Plumer Ave. 520-775-1727, ironjohnsbrewing.com .

Reilly Pizza and Beer Garden: It doesn't brew its own beer, but Reilly's beer garden is a must-stop for enthusiasts. Head out the side door and across the patio to that glass-and-metal building. Inside are 40 taps dedicated to beers both local and from afar. The knowledgeable "beerista" will guide you on your journey.

Details: 101 E. Pennington St. 520-882-5550, reillypizza.com .

1912 Brewing: Named for the year Arizona earned statehood, the neighborhood taproom that opened last summer features eight beers on tap. Hang out on the couch and watch sports on three TVs. Better yet, have a beer and then take some home.

Details: 2045 N. Forbes Blvd., Suite 105. 520-256-4851, www.1912brewing.com .

Sentinel Peak Brewing Co.: The nanobrewery prides itself on its flagship beers (IPA, blonde, Vienna and dunkel), and its seasonals delight as well, such as the very spicy chili beer it recently brewed as a fundraiser for Firefighters vs. Autism.

Details: 4746 E. Grant Road. 520-777-9456, www.sentinelpeakbrewing.com .

The article expresses the importance of grabbing a cold, crisp, and rather tasty craft beer while traveling — Tucson being one of those spots that’s “funky, artsy, and weird” to keep you busy during your trip.

Craft Beer Tucson: Are you looking for a cool microbrewery in Tucson to grab a drink? Visiting a brew pub in Tucson is a great way to visit the local scene.

Table of Contents

breweries tucson az

Small brewers are known as craft brewers. Innovation is a trademark of craft beer and craft brewers. Craft brewers put their own spin on classic styles and create new ones that haven’t been done before.

Craft beer is often prepared using traditional ingredients such as malted barley; however, interesting and occasionally non-traditional ingredients are frequently added for flavor.

15 Tucson Breweries You Need To Visit

Borderlands brewery tucson, az.

Borderlands has a unique look that manages to be both rustic and industrial. The train might shock your brain now and then as it passes by because it’s right next to the railroad lines, but that’s all part of the vibe here.

brewery tour tucson

This brewery is difficult to miss. It’s just down the street from Tap and Bottle and has one of the greatest murals in all of brew-dom. I enjoyed the huge outdoor area to chill and enjoy the beer.

The brewery’s brick walls create a great canvas for local art, and its spirit of experimentation and respect for local agriculture results in some of the area’s most unique beers: try the Prickly Pear Wheat or the Noche Dulce Vanilla Porter, which includes earthy Mexican vanilla.

This is an excellent place to spend a beautiful afternoon enjoying all of the wonderful beers they have to offer, with a spacious patio and wide-open taproom. Combining those beers with street tacos from their on-site food truck is a winning combination.

Barrio Brewing Company

Dennis Arnold and his wife, Tauna, started the Barrio Brewery, which was one of Arizona’s earliest craft breweries. The Barrio now offers a variety of house-brewed fresh beers on tap, as well as a delectable full menu.

brewery tour tucson

Barrio’s beers have increased in popularity since then, reaching every corner of the state. Barrio Brewing Company became Arizona’s first 100% employee-owned brewery in 2020.

TUS’s Barrio serves up a unique take on bar fare. Visit Barrio’s taproom, which has a unique industrial ambiance and is located away from the airport. When the train passes the pub, come in for Happy Hour or $1 off pints!

The staff is fantastic, and you will be properly looked at. The craft beer is fantastic, and they have a wide selection of brews ranging from mild to anything but mild.

If you’re visiting Tucson, Barrios Brewing Co. is a must-visit if you enjoy craft beer and a nostalgic atmosphere. Get good directions or use On Star if you have it because the brewery is off the beaten path and a little hard to find.

Dragoon Brewing Company

The Dragoon Brewing Company, located on Tucson’s west side, has grown from a small taproom to a lovely sit-down bar with various fresh beers on tap, including their famous Dragoon IPA and Santa Cruz’R.

At Dragoon, they make two different kinds of beer. Dragoon IPA, Santa Cruz’r, Refraction, and Dragoon PILS are available all year.

You may have these at any time of year. The rest of their beers are limited-edition releases. They make a Specialty release once a year at times, and only a single batch at other times.

This microbrewery offers a tasting facility on-site that serves its artisan brews, as well as a food truck.

Pueblo Vida Brewing Company

You’ll find the master of Hazy IPAs in Tucson’s beer scene right around the corner from Iron John’s, as well as a community vibe that will keep you coming back just to say hello.

Pueblo Vida has done an incredible job restoring a historic structure. It has a welcoming and warm wooden decor. If you enjoy cycling, you can store your bicycles inside while enjoying a well-deserved pint.

They offer everything from yoga to bike rides to cornhole tournaments.

A popular beer is their Bavarian Hefeweizen. The cozy Pueblo Vida Brewing Company is the place to go for beer enthusiasts who enjoy trying out new infusions, as they create new blends regularly. They’re also in the heart of Tucson’s downtown.

1912 Brewing Company

Arizona became a part of the United States in 1912, therefore this brewery holds a particular place in the hearts of locals. Since opening in July 2015, they have developed a strong reputation for producing a wide range of beer genres and have earned a good reputation.

They have a fantastic brewery with some great local sour and gose. If you’re going through Tucson and want to check out the local brewing culture, this is the place to go.

Furthermore, the relaxed atmosphere, knowledgeable bartenders, and a unique assortment of exceptionally outstanding beers are what draw people in. A four- or six-option sampler is also available. Make sure you place an order with Tucson Tamale Company.

Dogs are welcome at 1912 Brewing Company. This prominent family-owned brewery welcomes pets inside its premises. The sours are their most popular brews, but they also have a large assortment of other beers. Growler fills, pours, kegs, and a range of items are all available at 1912 Brewing Company.

Thunder Canyon Brewery

Before the craft beer trend hit the state, Thunder Canyon Brewery was one of Tucson’s first three breweries. Locals know that these brewmasters have some fantastic taps with a vast selection of high-quality beer kinds and flavors, despite all the options in town.

The folks that worked there helped to make this a memorable place. They not only brew their beer, but they also brew their rum. The brewery had a historic feel because of the old brick building.

This brewery should be on your Tucson brewery tour since it has art throughout, a front patio, and individuals who are passionate about what they do.

Firetruck Brewing Company

Firetruck Brewing Company, which was founded by firemen, has quickly become one of the most popular places in town to grab a refreshing beer.

They are also a full-service restaurant, but you can taste their enthusiasm for great beer in every sip!

They serve a wide range of superb, hand-crafted beers in a relaxed atmosphere where families, friends, and neighbors can enjoy the consistent quality and delicious food from our southwest-style menu.

The goal of FireTruck Brewing Company is to provide you with world-class award-winning beer. Their beers are also available in grocery and liquor stores around the state.

Of course, their humorous fire ax tap handles can be found in your neighborhood taverns and restaurants.

Dillinger Brewing Compan y

Tucson’s best new brewery is Dillinger Brewing Company! They sell a range of American, German, and English-style beers with a distinct Southwest flair, right on one of the main routes in town.

Dillinger Brewing Company is a great place to catch up with friends for a couple of beers.

This Brewing Company, which specializes in American, English, and German-style ales, offers a good choice of varieties to choose from, as well as a constantly rotating 10 beers on tap, live music, and events in a fun taproom.

Ten55 Brewing Company

Ten55 Brewing Company was founded in 2013 in Tucson, Arizona. They seek to create world-class brews that are accessible to anyone. Their brewers excel at producing high-quality beer that is nevertheless thrilling to the palate by paying respect to old-world styles.

If you come for the beer, you’ll want to stay for the incredible food! Their restaurant treats food with the same care and attention as they do, while also providing a wide range of options for all types of diners.

I really enjoyed their patio here. A great place to stop and have a beer.

They are also quite proud of their fantastic team, who will ensure that all of our visitors have a wonderful time in our gorgeous downtown location.

While visiting breweries, a short walk is always a good idea. Return to Congress Street for some more local craft brews and a bite to eat while you’re there.

On those sunny Tucson days, they also have a nice patio space with outdoor seats where you can enjoy some enjoyable people watching.

MotoSonora Brewing Company

This place will undoubtedly become one of your favorites, with firepits strategically placed throughout their large backyard beer garden, fine beer, live music, friends, and on-site diner-type food truck, and even a dog run.

This is a large space, with inside and outside tables spaced far enough apart to accommodate the current social gap.

This establishment also serves a wide range of beer genres, including IPAs, ales, and lagers, all with a racing theme. For non-drinkers, there are also alcohol-free sodas. People are welcome to bring their food to eat.

You can try their White Flag Witbier (4.9 percent ABV) and a Mocha Moto Porter to go with it (8 percent ABV). Both are full-bodied and delicious, with the coffee porter having just the right amount of coffee taste without being overpowering. Both are poured in 12-ounce tulip glasses, and a six-pack of their “Victory or Death” IPA is also available (6.7 percent ABV).  The service here is quite pleasant and informative.

On sunny days, the outdoor dining is extensive, with umbrellas for the tables. On the south side of the building, there’s even a designated off-leash dog area (The Ruff Zone) with fake turf and water dishes.

Two restrooms are not gendered. Guests can also take advantage of the free WiFi. For a brewery, their prices are pretty reasonable so, this is something you don’t want to miss!

Copper Mine Brewing

Copper Mine Brewing was established in 2016, although its roots date back nearly a decade when co-founder Jeff Kaber brewed his first batch of beer on his kitchen stove.

After meeting co-founder Jeremy Pye five years later, weekend homebrew sessions turned into business brainstorming meetings.

Copper Mine Brewing Company is named after Arizona, a beautiful state. Their objective has been to give the greatest quality beer to the community while also cultivating an environment where individuals can be themselves while enjoying a refreshing pint with friends and family.

Crowlers of Hibiscus Blonde, Honey, I Baklavad the Stout, and Watermelon Gose is available. They attempt to create something for everyone in their taproom, which has ten beers on tap.

This little brewery may not be surrounded by other brewers. It lacks both a patio and a charming historical structure to call home. It does, however, have a wonderful beer, a wide variety of it, and people who enjoy brewing and serving it. That’s all you’ll need to get in the door.

Harbottle Brewing Company

Micheladas at a brewery? These are billed as two-handed ones, too – with all the stuff in Harbottle Brewing Company It’s almost a beer. And speaking of beer, it’s a brewery. They’ve got that, too, in this neighborhood taproom.

You’ll find the beer you want here, as well as the people you want to drink it with, from conventional styles to their sour program to their barrel project. You’ll enjoy all of them: classic styles, mixed fermentation, and experimentation.

Every Sunday, you may enjoy their delightfully flavored, house-made spicy micheladas!

Voltron Brewing

Located at 330 S. Toole Ave, welcome to Arizona’s very first co-op brewery!  Just a few blocks from the heart of the city! Borderlands Brewing and Sentinel Peak’s best hits, as well as Voltron’s exclusive collaborations, are on tap.

The brewing company’s interior is basic but welcoming. Tables and a bar are available. You must try their Voltron Collab beer as well as their Mexican Amber, Salida Del Sol. Both options have an excellent flavor.

The brewing area is enormous, and it can be seen from the bar through a big window. Give it a shot; you’ll be glad you did!

They grind their barley on-site and make specialized beer with whole grains, fragrant hops, fresh spices, and a range of distinctive, local ingredients.

They make and distribute new beers weekly, with classics like the Old Pueblo Pale Ale, 1891 Red Ale, and the ever-popular Viejo Imperial IPA.

The LPGA's top developmental circuit will make a visit to the Valley of the Sun for a fourth year in a row but this time at a new venue: TPC Scottsdale's Champions Course.

The Carlisle event will also set a milestone with a $400,000 purse and a $60,000 first-place prize. Both are the largest to date on the Epson Tour, which has $5 million in total prize money for the 2024 season, also a new high. Consider that in 2013, the tour, now in its 44th year, played for a total of $1.6 million.

The event at TPC is the third on a four-event West Coast Swing and the second straight in Arizona. Madison Young won on Saturday in the Casino Del Sol Golf Classic in Tucson, her first Epson Tour victory.

Past champions of the Carlisle Arizona Women's Golf Classic are Gabriela Ruffels (2023), Fatima Fernandez Cano (2022) and Ruixin Liu (2021). All three won the title when the event was staged at Longbow Golf Club in Mesa. All three are now members of the LPGA.

In all, 480 LPGA titles have been won by former Epson Tour players, including 13 major championships since 2013. A total of 192 players have "graduated" to the LPGA over the past 25 years. Advancing from the Epson Tour to the LPGA opened up a bit in 2024, as 15 cards will be handed out through a new points-based ranking system (rather than the money list). That's up from 10 a year ago.

The honorary tournament co-chairs for 2024 are Phoenix Suns TV analyst Ann Meyers Drysdale and Arizona State women's golf coach Missy Farr-Kaye.

Carlisle Companies announced last November a three-year extension of their sponsorship.

The Champions Course has previously hosted the first stage of PGA Tour Q-School as well as the final stage of PGA Tour Champions Q-School.
