sea eagle trips from oban

“This was our third trip over the past few years and each time we’ve seen porpoises, eagles, seals and many different sea birds. The boat is very comfortable and the crew have always been very friendly and we loved the folk tales about the area.”

“We had a fantastic day on this trip. The weather was perfect, we saw seals, porpoises, deer, a sea eagle and the highlight of the trip was seeing a minke whale. Such a great experience. David and Karen were very informative, friendly and full of knowledge and information making the trip even more memorable. David doesn’t just run boat trips, he has been involved in making this area one of the best protected areas in the UK resulting in a massive increase in the numbers of porpoises. Would highly recommend this trip. The boat is very spacious for the number on board giving plenty of room for everyone to move around.”

“This is a trip filled with stories of local myth and legend interspersed lessons on the wonders of natural wildlife and local conservation. The professionalism of the staff was amazing and they all took the time and trouble to make sure that we saw a wide variety of wildlife with personal one to one conversations. We were encouraged to ask questions which were all answered very knowledgeabley. The weather was amazing on our trip but it wouldn’t have mattered had it been otherwise. Well worth going. I would highly recommend it.”

Where To Stay on the Isle of Mull

Hotels, guest houses and self-catering on the isle of mull.

Mull Charters is one of the companies well-known for offering boat trips that provide opportunities to see White-Tailed Eagles in their natural habitat. They operate around the Isle of Mull and are recognized for their expertise in getting visitors close to the eagles, especially during feeding times, which offers a fantastic opportunity for observation and photography.

Turus Mara is another company that provides wildlife tours to various locations, including trips to the Treshnish Isles and Staffa from Mull and Oban. While they are more broadly focused on wildlife and scenic tours, they also offer chances to see White-Tailed Eagles among other seabirds and marine life.

Oban Sea Tours . Their tour shadows the island of Mull’ss coastline as this is a prime location to spot one of these majestic birds. The birds can often be seen hunting for their next meal in the Firth of Lorn, with a varied diet of fish and seabirds. Our tour offers you the opportunity to spot one of the UK’s rarest bird species.

Wildlife Croft Skye offers wildlife tours that include eagle-watching opportunities. While they are based on the Isle of Skye, they are an example of the type of local wildlife tours you can look for around Oban and the Isle of Mull.

When planning your trip, it’s essential to contact the tour operators directly to inquire about their specific offerings for eagle watching. Also, consider the season, as wildlife activity can vary throughout the year. Spring and early summer are often good times to see the eagles, especially when they are more active in nest building and rearing their young.

Before booking any tour, it’s advisable to check reviews, ask about the likelihood of eagle sightings during your visit, and confirm the details of the tour, including duration, cost, and what to bring. Each of these companies would provide you with a unique opportunity to see White-Tailed Eagles near Oban, making your visit a memorable adventure into Scotland’s natural beauty.

Wildlife tourism in Scotland is thriving. Penny Bunting visits the Isle of Mull to seek out one of the country's most spectacular birds

Above: white tailed sea eagle © Martin Keivers Mull Charters

Wildlife tourism is booming in Scotland, with over one million trips each year taken by visitors who specifically want to enjoy the country's remarkable wildlife.

Scotland's spectacular, wild and diverse landscapes encompass mountains, forests, lochs and thousands of miles of coastline, and are home to a wide range of different mammal, bird and insect species – some of which are rarely or never seen in other parts of the UK.

Choosing one individual region of the country for a wildlife trip is hard – but one of our favourite Scottish wildlife destinations is the beautiful island of Mull. Just 45 minutes from the mainland (catch the ferry from Oban), it's an easily accessible pocket of wilderness that supports an extraordinary variety of wildlife on land, in the sky and in the sea.

buzzards

On land, look out for red deer and otters. Golden eagles, white-tailed eagles and buzzards can be seen soaring over the island's peaks and lochs, and the waters surrounding the island support Atlantic grey and common seals, minke whales, dolphins and basking sharks.

Sea Eagle Adventure

Often referred to as 'Eagle Island', Mull is well known as one of the best places in the world to see sea eagles (also known as white-tailed eagles). With a wingspan of well over two metres, this enormous bird – the fourth largest eagle in the world – is a spectacular sight.

Once extinct in Britain, a successful reintroduction programme has led to sea eagles being resident in Scotland once more – although numbers are still very low. These birds have no natural predators, but are at risk from human activity and loss of habitat and food sources.

Above, clockwise from top left: buzzards; Glen More; Loch Frisa; highland cattle near Ulva Ferry

sea eagle

There is hope for these magnificent birds though. Mull Eagle Watch is a partnership between RSPB, Forestry Commission Scotland, Scottish Natural Heritage, the Mull and Iona Community Trust and Police Scotland, and offers protection to sea eagles nesting on the island.

The partnership also arranges ranger-led walking tours. Running from April to September and lasting around two hours, these tours give visitors a chance to view sea eagles – and as you're guided by an expert who knows all the birds' current perching spots, you're in with a good chance of spotting them.

For an excellent chance of getting a close up view of a sea eagle, take a boat trip with Mull Charters . The company's Sea Eagle Adventure lasts for three hours and leaves from the tiny harbour at Ulva Ferry.

This is an exhilarating trip. For a start, there is the most spectacular scenery to enjoy from onboard the Lady Jayne – a small vessel that carries just 12 passengers, meaning there's no crowding and a brilliant view for everyone on board. The route taken can vary according to weather conditions – but expert local knowledge from skipper Martin Keivers ensures the best chances of wildlife sightings whatever the route.

sea eagle

On the day we took the trip the sun was shining, the sky was blue and the water was calm – but high winds and heavy rains had been forecast, so we followed a sheltered route, along lovely Loch na Keal and past the tiny, uninhabited island of Eorsa. There are sea eagles nesting in the trees alongside the loch, so everyone on board was optimistic about seeing the birds. Along the way we were given a fascinating commentary by first mate Alex, with information about the geology, history and wildlife of the area.

It's important to remember that sightings on any wildlife trip cannot be guaranteed. These are wild creatures, after all – and their behaviour on any given day can be fickle or unpredictable. However, Mull Charters has an excellent success rate for sea eagle sightings. On each trip a small quanitity of fish is offered – just enough to allow the birds to associate the boat with a tasty treat, without them becoming reliant on the Lady Jayne as a source of food.

Sometimes a sea eagle collects the fish from the surface of the water as close as 25 metres from the boat – making for an excellent photo opportunity for all on board (the photograhs of sea eagles in this article were all taken by Martin during his trips).

So, with cameras at the ready we scanned the skies. As we approached the area near where the birds were nesting, anticipation began to increase. There was a lot of bird activity around us already, with dozens of gulls following the Lady Jayne – and we also had a pretty good sighting of a magnificent golden eagle, riding the air currents high above the boat.

But there was no sign of the sea eagles. By now, just as the forecast had predicted, the wind had begun to whip the loch into choppy waves and fat raindrops began to fall. So we headed into a sheltered bay for a coffee break – feeling a little disappointed and unlucky that we hadn't seen the sea eagles.

After the break, Martin decided to head back into the loch for another try. Once again, the boat was surrounded by gulls. Then suddenly a male sea eagle was amongst them, dwarfing the smaller birds with its huge form and flying close to the boat. For a moment, time seemed to stand still as we took in the immensity of this creature. We had a superb view of its fan-shaped tail, huge talons and unmistakable profile, with sharp, hook-like beak and bright eyes.

Almost in slow motion, the sea eagle circled around the back of us to fly alongside the boat on the other side, before swooping down dramatically to take a fish from the surface of the water right next to us. Then it was up and away, flying gracefully across the loch and out of sight.

It was a magical moment, and well worth waiting for – proving that patience pays off, especially when watching wildlife!

Where to stay

The Isle of Mull Hotel and Spa sits in an excellent location on the edge of Craignure Bay, just a few minutes from the ferry terminal. Rooms are pleasantly decorated in neutral tones with Highland tartan accessories and extremely comfortable beds. Many of the rooms have superb views across the water to the mountains of the Scottish mainland. Tea and coffee making facilities – with Scottish shortbread – and complimentary toiletries are provided in all rooms.

Breakfast was very good. Freshly cooked bacon, black pudding, haggis, sausage, eggs and potato scones – along with vegetarian options and a selection of cereals, fruit and yoghurt – are served in a spacious dining room that has large picture windows overlooking the bay. The service was friendly and helpful.

What makes this hotel truly enticing, though, is the spa. Consisting of a 17m heated, indoor pool – with more floor to ceiling picture windows – sauna, steam room and hot/cold foot spa, there is a range of treatments available. There's also an outdoor hot tub – a perfect place to enjoy those wonderful views and soothe tired, aching muscles after a day's hiking or wildlife watching.

The Isle of Mull Hotel and Spa supports Mull Eagle Watch.

White-tailed sea eagles are Britain’s largest bird of prey. They became extinct in Britain in 1918 but changes in legislation created an opportunity for their reintroduction and in 1975 82 were transported from Norway to the Isle of Rum. More were released on the mainland and breeding has been successful with between 80-90 individual birds now living in Scotland.

Feeding Habits

Off the coast of Mull is a great place to spot the magnificent white-tailed sea eagles. There are around 20 eagles on the island. When these huge birds of prey aren’t soaring on the thermals, we sometimes see the spectacular sight of them swooping down to the surface and grabbing fish with their talons which is always spectacular and a real thrill to watch.

Sea eagles are skilled hunters and, unsurprisingly, feed mainly on fish but they do have a varied diet and will often eat carrion and small mammals occasionally. Some will also scavenge and steal food from other birds and otters.

Sea Eagles are fairly common sight and Golden Eagles are often spotted also but it largely depends on the weather whether we will see any on one of our trips. A day with scattered showers is most likely to yield good sightings as the eagles come out from the trees and cliff ledges to feed, preferring to stay sheltered when it’s raining.

OTHER EXCURSIONS

Oban's history, introduction.

Oban is a scenic seaside town on the West Coast of Scotland. The first known inhabitants in Oban have been traced back to the Mesolithic age, as far back as 10,000 years. One of Oban’s oldest sites is Dunollie Castle. Situated on the entrance into Oban bay, the castle can be traced back to the Early Middle Ages. Oban was little more than a natural harbour up until 1793, when John and Hugh Stevenson arrived. The Stevenson brothers transformed the fortunes of Oban by building a distillery, which is still situated at the heart of the town. The town was then spurred on again in 1880 with the arrival of the railway which was vital in exporting Oban’s whiskey and seafood. These key events helped to transform Oban into a thriving town.

Gateway to the isles

The name Oban translates from Gaelic as ‘little bay’. A natural harbour sheltered by the island of Kerrera, the town is known as ‘Gateway to the Isles’ and boasts numerous connections to the islands on the West Coast. From Mull, Lismore and Kerrera which are in close proximity to Oban and also others slightly further afield including Coll, Tiree and Barra. With daily ferries to the islands from Oban it makes the town an ideal base for island hoping.

The seafood capital of scotland!

Oban is the ‘Seafood capital of Scotland’, with local fishing boats based in the town catching a variety of fish and shellfish. This can be sampled widely across the town from on-the-go establishments situated meters away from the fishing boats that have landed the catch to restaurants offering both the outstanding seafood and a comfortable setting. Oban showcases the quality of seafood the West Coast of Scotland has to offer.

McCaig's Tower

Oban’s most notable feature is McCaig’s tower which overlooks the town. The tower was commissioned by local banker John Stuart McCaig. Work began on erecting the tower in 1897 and continued until his death in 1902. McCaig’s tower was constructed to provide work for local stonemasons in the area, due to lack of work and used local Bonawe Granite. It is thought that the tower was intended to be a museum or gallery dedicated to McCaig’s family but due to his death the structure was not completed.  The structure boasts similarities to Greek and Roman structures, including the colosseum in Rome.

A visit to McCaig’s tower provides panoramic views over Oban bay, across the Firth of Lorn and of the islands of Mull, Kerrera and Lismore. The stunning views from the tower make the climb up Battery Hill worthwhile.

Oban Distillery

The distillery is situated in the heart of Oban and was established by brothers Hugh and John Stevenson in 1794. This brought prosperity to the town as at the time of their arrival, the town was relatively small and undeveloped.  Oban is one of the oldest and smallest distilleries in Scotland. The distillery offers tours which provide an insight into the production of their whiskey.

St Columba's Cathedral

St Columba's Cathedral stands on the East side of Oban. Built by Sir Giles Gilbert, the cathedral is a blend of Gothic and Romanesque styles. The interior of the building has impressive wide-open spaces giving a sense of the importance of the cathedral to the locals.

Leisure Activities

Scotland's most scenic and iconic sights.

Oban’s location is ideal for those who like to explore the great outdoors as it is located close to some of Scotland's most scenic and iconic sights, with many picturesque coastal walks close to the town.

Highest Point in Argyll

If you are looking for something more challenging there is Ben Cruachan. The Munro is the highest point in Argyll and is a 25-minute drive from Oban. The summit offers stunning views across Argyll. Also known as the “hollow mountain”, Ben Cruachan was partially excavated to house a large hydroelectric power station which opened in 1965.

Situated 50 minutes from Oban, Glen Coe is renowned for its breathtaking scenery and variety of climbing routes to suit all abilities. The area boasts some of the best climbing in Scotland but the scenery alone makes a visit worthwhile.

Fort William

The town of Fort William is situated 1 hour and 10 minutes north of Oban and is located at the foot of the highest point in the UK, Ben Nevis. Ben Nevis is part of the Grampian Mountains which attracts climbers to the area to take on some of the challenging peaks. In addition to climbing, Fort William is widely known for offering an array of outdoor activities, including mountain biking and motorcycle trails. It’s an ideal visit for those looking for a thrill-seeking activity.

Other Excursions

If you want to explore the West Coast of Scotland further and see what else it offers we recommend a trip with Staffa Tours. The tours depart from Tobermory and Fionnphort on the Isle of Mull and from the Isle of Iona. The tours visit the unique and breathtaking island of Staffa, home to the infamous Fingal’s cave.

Experience the cave that has attracted many visitors, including Queen Victoria and Felix Mendelssohn, to this remote island. Some tours also visit the Island of Lunga. This is home to vast seabird colonies during their breeding season and includes the puffin which can be seen in abundance on the island. On route to the islands, sea life is also plentiful with regular visits from dolphins, whales and basking sharks. Staffa tours provide scenic and wildlife-rich tours for those wanting to explore the islands on the West Coast of Scotland.

Wildlife Cruise

This popular wildlife cruise leaves from the picturesque town of Tobermory, an easily accessible location with great transport links and commodities making it the heart of Mull. As well as travelling via Kilchoan, Ardnamurchan on mainland Scotland, this tour provides the perfect destination points to enjoy an excursion suitable for all the family to enjoy.

sea eagle trips from oban

Mull Charters operate from Ulva Ferry on Mull’s magical west coast. If you want to get up close and personal with the fourth largest Eagle in the world you have come to the right place. Our Sea Eagle Adventure trip is designed to do just that. Our trips are usually in sheltered waters surrounded by magnificent scenery and stunning wildlife. Our Eagle encounters are a photographers and naturalists dream come true. From the comfort of our boat you can relax while the Eagles come to us and take fish from the water just a few metres away, presenting one of Europe’s best opportunities to photograph these magnificent birds fishing in the wild.

While Eagles are often the main attraction we also see plenty of other wildlife. Great Northern Divers can be found in full breeding plumage in May and Red Throated Divers are regularly seen. Golden Eagles frequent many of the hills around our route and while some distance away are always a thrill to see. Hen Harriers, Peregrines and Buzzards are regulars and at certain times of year Puffins Guillemot and Razorbill are present.

Mammals are also present with frequent sightings of Bottlenose Dolphins, Harbour Porpoise, and Otter. We also visit our local seal colony which is mainly Common Seals but does sometimes include Atlantic Grey as well. Summer time is the best time for Basking Sharks and these leviathans of the sea (second largest fish in the world) can be found grazing plankton along the tide lines further out to sea. Minke Whales, Orca and other whales all pass through the area and while less reliable are always a welcome addition.

We can also take you to the historically important Isle of Inch Kenneth, burial place of kings and once the home to the Mitford family. A stroll around this gem of an island is a pleasure few have managed but with the Scottish Outdoor Access Code we can offer you the chance to experience it for yourself. Our trip does not include access to the house, but you can visit the 15th century chapel and graveyard and marvel at the flora and fauna Inch Kenneth has in abundance, and relax in the tranquil atmosphere and admire the majestic cliffs and mountains of Mull.

We also offer Sea Angling trips for the angler. Most fishing is done on the drift with hard fighting Pollack and Coal fish the main targets, especially good fun on light tackle. Mackerel are abundant and a tasty BBQ delight in summer and autumn. Rod and reel is provided if you don’t have your own and terminal tackle is available on board, as is help and tuition for novices. One of my favourite things is to see a youngsters face light up as they catch their first fish. Conservation is a must on Lady Jayne and all fish which aren’t kept for eating or bait must be carefully returned alive.

Toilet available on board, complimentary tea/coffee on most trips. All photographs were taken aboard lady Jayne. Access to Inch Kenneth is by small boat so some agility required.

Daily wildlife trips and private charters are also available.
