tenamonya voyagers mal

Today, we’ll be taking a trip through Tenamonya Voyagers to find all the ways they’re mimicking Evangelion.

1. Mechs all over the place!

Perch : Paraila has a personal mech, they fight in mechs…

Kinotu : They dress up teacher Ayako in the equivalent of a cardboard mech.

2. Shinji wants nothing more than to run away from his problems. Paraila is actively attempting to run away from her problems.

Kinotu : Which is approximately 247% more active than Shinji ever is.

Perch : And yet she gets no closer to her actual goal.  They’re on the run the entire series and never make it anywhere near earth.  They make it to jail, a gambling den and some fan-service, but not earth.

Kinotu : Jail, ironically, being what she was running away from.  Making her far more active, but somehow less effective than Shinji.

3. Just like in Evangelion, anything regarding schooling is quickly dumped and forgotten.

Kinotu : Despite one of the characters actually being a teacher and another one a student.

Perch : Yes, but the teacher was more interested in Haikus and eating than actually teaching anything.

4. Wakana, much like Asuka, ends up being a lot of wasted “bad-ass” potential

Perch : Though at least Wakana was played up for laughs.

Kinotu : I’m pretty sure Anno thought she was funny…

5. Ryoji and Elaine are both undercover agents infiltrating the clandestine operations of space-trash.

Kinotu : Though Ryoji’s space-trash are the Angels, Paraila is just nicknamed “Space-Trash”.

Perch : Whereas Ryoji gets shot before he manages to do anything, Elaine at least gets to Marginally confront Space-Trash Paraila before she gets jettisoned into space.

6. In both Evangelion and Tenamonya Voyagers, the last few things we see of the series devolve into answering the fans.

Kinotu : The main difference being that Evangelion devolved into a giant middle-finger shaped mech pointed squarely at the audience, whereas Tenamonya Voyagers was using one of those to cover up someone’s jubblies.

Perch : And unlike Evangelion, I actually approved of Tenamonya’s final episode because the fan-service was hilarious.

If you haven’t seen Tenamonya Voyagers it’s a four episode OVA about the only criminal in the universe to figure out how jurisdictions work and the teacher and student trailing along for the ride.

Kinotu : Wacky hijinks, etc, etc.

Perch : For a show that should have been right up my alley, I found myself to be more bored than enjoying it.  Which is a shame.  Ultimately, despite the insane lengths they went to give us some fan-service, it’s a forgettable show.

Kinotu : There are some great comedy bits in there that you won’t really remember a couple of moments after they’re off the screen.  It mostly just kind of falls flat.  Wait, are we being serious about reviewing a show?  Crap! Panic mode! Uhhh… SHINJI IS A WIMP!

In conclusion we give this show four pen-pens out of five regardless of their mechs.  If Misato had spent an episode covering her naughty-bits with pool floaties this show probably wouldn’t have needed to be made.

Tenamonya Voyagers

Ayako, a newly graduated high school teacher, and Wakana, a star athlete on a sports scholarship, arrive at their new school only to find that it's gone out of business. That leaves them broke and stranded on the far side of the galaxy, with nowhere to go but back to the middle of nowhere--Earth. Fortunately for them, Paraila, another "high school student" falls out of the sky and just happens to be going to the same place (of course, in her case, it's because an obscure legal loophole erases the criminal record of anybody who sets foot on Earth). That puts two clueless Earthlings and one of the most dangerous criminals in the galaxy on the run from both the police (and the madwoman who commands them) and the gang that Paraila's unsuccesful coup de tat was supposed to make her the boss of. Add one more young gangster trying to show her worth, and you've got four women against a good portion of the military might in space.

Tenamonya Voyagers is yet another story about a bunch of girls on a trip across space being chased by bad people. Actually, it's really more like a Project A-ko-style parody of its own genre than a member of it; although the basic story is there and the characters aren't self aware or un-solid enough that it's apparent at first, the in-jokes and parodies were frequent enough (and the story so utterly pointless) that after a while it became clear that the jokes, more than the characters or story, were the point of the whole exercise. What plot there is rather random and confusing, and the entire backstory is railed off in the first few minutes of the show, but it doesn't really matter anyway--basically, the series is just a string of comic situations.

Even so, the characters were a very standard but at least functionally likable bunch. There's Ayako, the meek, naievé schoolteacher; she was my personal favorite, and the fact that she was just a tad more mature-seeming than the standard anime girl in this situation was a refreshing (if slight) change from the usual crowd of 16 year olds in space (she's 22--when was the last time you saw a female main character in anime who was between the ages of 19 and 300?). Her mild chastisements of the really major crimes that the bunch was comitting and beleagured, see-no-evil approach to their adventures were both cute and funny, although at times her dazed whining bordered on annoying. Next we have Wakana, the tough jock, and Paraila, the even tougher young mob boss on the run; the two of them basically argued through the entire series about how to get things done, which was lively without being grating, and so fairly funny. Finally, there was Parilia's underling who didn't really do much. Oh, and of course, there's our obsessed policewoman villain; she was actually pretty impressive in the vicious and determined department, but was close to being too serious for the series (although her pathetic situation in the final episode made that worth while). All in all, nothing to write home about.

That said, let me reiterate: Tenamonya Voyagers is stupid to the core. It starts silly, ends with a big joke, stuffs lots of gags in between, and throws some more jokes in the background just for good measure. Some series have their touching moments amidst the mayhem, and almost every anime comedy turns serious as it reaches its climax. Not this one. In fact, without giving too much away, the end of the series does not go where you expect it to, and despite appearances, it was at least partly intentional (and pretty darned funny, at least in a "now that I think about it..." kind of way). So, assuming you posess a funny bone (if you don't, don't even pick up the box--you might have an allergic reaction), the question is: will you think this is funny? Unfortunately, the answer is probably not a resounding yes for most people, but let's see.

To start with, the humor operates on about four different levels. The one you'll notice first is just sort of a general parody of several different sci-fi genres (mecha, space oprea, girls in space, etc). Some of this was done by juxtaposing classic sci-fi standbys and present-day (and hence archaic in context) equipment and styles. For one example, after a massive space battle when the police are raiding a criminal battleship, the chief cruises along with a bunch of huge spider mechs in a Japanese police car. Preposterous, but probably funny for sci-fi fans--I, at least, got a chuckle out of it. Other parodies are more straightforward sendups, such as in the last episode: a classic treck across a huge, malfunctioning spaceship before it crashes into something... except in this case, of course, the "challenges" are stupid, and the climate control is broken... with side effects I'll get to later.

As a side note, sci-fi fans might be wondering how Tenamonya Voyagers holds up as actual sci-fi. Some sci-fi comedies still manage to include creative technology, fanciful locations, or at least an interesting world (Tenchi Muyo, Martian Sucessor Nadesico, or Photon, to name a few). Tenamonya Voyagers is not in that category--other than a weird mecha supercharger disk, the technology and locations were functional but little more. The world, likewise, was as lacking in solidity as the rest of the production; funny and semi-functional, but way too sloppy to appreciate as anything but a staging ground for the humor.

Getting back to the humor, the second thing we've got are dozens of parodies of very old Japanese TV shows. Some of these are anime classics (a space train ala Galaxy Express 999, except that it looks like a modern subway), but others (such as both the opening and end themes) are from much more obscure series or live action TV shows that most people outside of Japan (and under 30) probably have never even heard of. I'm not a slouch on Japanese pop culture knowledge, but I would have only gotten a handful of the references had I not had someone who grew up in Japan pointing things out to me. For a select few, these references might be very funny, but for most non-Japanese, only those few that relate to anime are likely to register.

The thrid part of the humor (in the subtitled version) is even more likely to be wasted on a non-Japanese audience, and that's verbal humor. The Japanese dialogue is loaded with puns, more references to old pop culture (classic songs, for example), funny gangster accents, and general verbal silliness (children's games and silly ways of saying things). Of course, if you don't speak Japanese (and well at that), a handful of these might sound amusing, but they'll go right by you. Although the subtitlers did try to translate a few of the dialogue-based jokes (a word game, for example), most of them the translators just let slide (that same word game in another scene, for example). If this had been, say, an AnimEigo or RightStuf release, with obsessive liner notes and subtitle translation, there would have been volumes to read through... but Bandai, although they did a passable job of it, didn't take that route. So, the bottom line here is, another large chunk of the humor is going to go unappreciated (and probably unnoticed altogether). The dub has its own funny moments, but there wasn't a major effort put into clever dialogue or replacements for the jokes that didn't carry over, so this entire category of the humor is more or less nonexistant in that version.

Finally, there is the kind of humor that's more or less universal: Slapstick, general silliness, and good old fashioned stupidity. As a whole it wasn't quite as funny as I would have hoped, but the series never slacked off or waxed dramatic, either, and there were a few really good spots. Although much of the parody-type humor was relatively subtle (or, even if it was blatant, they didn't point it out or wait for a rimshot), the rest of the gags were clean but aiming pretty low--just plain, old, generic stupidity.

Personal taste aside, I at least had a problem with some of the humor (the parts I got, that is)--the rythm wasn't very good. The jokes came fast and furious, but comic timing is all important, and this series just didn't have that down. Not to say that the jokes weren't funny, and it seemed to get better toward the end, but there were several spots where things felt too rushed or squeezed in, and as a whole the humor suffered. Taste means a lot in comedy, and I'm sure that not everyone will feel this way, but if the timing was off enough to actually bother me, I'm willing to bet that I'm not alone.

Ok, now that you know more about the exact style of humor in Tenamonya Voyagers than you ever wanted to, let's have a quick recap: As far as my personal sense of humor goes, Tenamonya Voyagers was reasonably successful as a sci-fi parody and a generally silly send-up of anime (mainly its own genre). The aim was low, there were rough points, but on the whole it at least kept me chuckling.

Now, before I move on, there's one more thing that I think bears mentioning here: Fanservice. The humor may have been clean, but throughout the series there was a scattering of those awkward angles or compromising positions that the male fans usually get a kick out of. But, nothing at all noteworthy... until the last episode. I assume it was a parody of the fact that anime creators always find some excuse for a hot springs scene or some other excuse for getting all the female characters naked, but you remember that climate control problem I mentioned earlier? Well, the upshot is that the four main characters (and one more, for good measure) spend very nearly the entire last episode--a fourth of the series--naked. Actually, they continually rotate through a vast array of just about anything you can think of (baseball equipment, cooking utensils, and my favorite, goldfish in a plastic bag) strapped on as stand-in bikinis (and skimpy ones at that). Humorous, probably; titilating to some fans, certainly; in extremely poor taste, well... your call. Take it for what you will, but you've been warned.

Moving on, visually, Tenamonya Voyagers looked surprisingly good. To start with, the camerawork was creative--odd angles, and several highly stylized scenes with dark or moody lighting (these were mostly parodies of the sort of scenes that would be in a more serious show--the bulk of the production was quite colorful). The art was up to it--smooth and reasonably detailed, although the backgrounds were occasionally too abstract for my taste. The animation was very smooth throughout, and some of the action scenes looked particularly fluid--if nothing else, this series looks expensive (if you've seen the preview, you probably noticed that). The character designs weren't so memorable, but weren't bad either--the leading ladies were attractive enough, and relatively distinctive. What I didn't like as much was the character animation; in general, it was fine, but some of the exagerated facial expressions were not to my taste. I honestly don't know how to describe it, but about the best I can do is say that they were more American-cartoony than anime-cartoony (although stylized in some cases, they were also less exaggerated than I was expecting, and in a way that I didn't find particularly appealing). The other (and probably larger, though in both cases it depends a lot on taste) problem was that, to go with the random and chaotic plot, the visuals were also a bit random and chaotic--the action scenes in particular were smooth, but so furious that it was hard to tell what was going on, and as a big fan of crisp, solid action I pretty much wrote them off entirely. The chaos elsewhere was more restrained, but still took a bit away from the series, and also probably contributed to the weak comic timing I mentioned earlier.

There's not much to say about the acting that I haven't already, other than that the Japanese actors were relatively distinctive considering how generic the characters were. The dialogue was surprisingly natural sounding (at least when you take the production as a whole into account). Also, putting all the funny accents aside, I though that Ayako's voice actor stood out with her hilariously accurate schoolteacher-style gentle repremands (...of major crimes). The dub has a rather more mature-voiced flavor, but is cast reasonably well, and although the acting is very broad, it's not bad at all... but it also just isn't all that funny. To be fair, as I went over earlier, Tenamonya Voyagers is one of those series that can't be translated smoothly into English (let alone into spoken English), so the bottom line is that while the literal translation carried some of the humor through, a lot of it just didn't make the linguistic jump, and there wasn't a great effort made to replace the untranslatable jokes with something more dub-friendly. The background music was grand and fairly good all things considered, with a crooning classic end theme and a catchy insturmental march for the opening--you might be stuck humming that one for a few days.

All in all, Tenamonya Voyagers was a hit-or-miss production. On the up side, it was comedy from start to finish, with no annoying plot or drama to get in the way. The silly humor and parodies of sci-fi and anime in general were also funny, especially for fans of either. On the down side, the world wasn't very solid, a very large percentage of the humor just isn't going to be appreciated by a non-Japanese audience, and considering the volume of stupidity in the show, really hilarious moments were sparser than I was expecting. I really wanted to like it, and it kept threatening to turn into something really hilarious, but it was too uneven on the whole for me to recommend to most people. If you like quirky parodies, you'll probably enjoy it, and might really love it. As a straightforward comedy, it's not bad either. But, if you don't think much of silly girls in space action, don't even touch it--if you can't stomach straight entries in the genre, you're really not going to like this send-up.

As mentioned above, this series was absolutely loaded with in-jokes, parodies, and references. A couple of good examples: The opening theme is the "Geba Geba March", the opening theme from "Geba Geba Kyuu-juppun", a live action sketch comedy series that was very popular about 30 years ago (but taken off the air on account of being a bad influence on kids). Similarly, the end theme is a very old classic pop song. Making a list of the rest would be an interesting pop culture experience, but would also take a very long time. The Galaxy Express 999 train will most likely ring a bell, and if you're well versed in old anime, you may notice other references.

Mostly clean, but the not-quite-nudity in the last episode easily brings the series up to the equivalent of a PG-13, most likely an R.
