Colonel Bailey’s Dungeon, once utilized by Tipu Sultan for the incarceration and torment of British captives, bears a haunting legacy. Named in honour of Colonel Bailey, a British prisoner who perished within its confines in 1780, the dungeon holds grim reminders of its dark past.

Visitors to the dungeon can witness an enduring relic of that era: a cannon, silent witness to the suffering endured within these walls.

The Water Gate is one of the town’s entrances, shrouded in secrecy and historical significance. Once a covert passage utilized by locals to draw water from the River Cauvery, this gate holds a clandestine past.

According to historical accounts, the Water Gate played a pivotal role in the British soldiers’ clandestine entry into Srirangapatna, where they orchestrated the demise of Tipu Sultan.

Is Srirangapatna Safe for Solo Female Travellers?

Srirangapatna offers a safe environment for solo female travellers , ensuring peace of mind throughout your journey. I travelled solo and encountered no troubles, with locals generally keeping to themselves and avoiding conflict.

However, it’s essential to remain vigilant of fake guides who may attempt to exploit visitors for minimal information. I repeatedly fell victim to their schemes, particularly during visits to Tipu Sultan Fort and Gumbaz-e-Shahi. Additionally, exercising caution at night and being aware of your surroundings are crucial safety measures.

The town of Srirangapatna was capital of Mysore under his ruling. If we fast forward time today, Srirangapatna is prominent place for religious and historic importance. Due to its close proximity to Mysore, Srirangpatna tourist places are famous for a day trip.

The Sriranpatna is surrounded by Cauvery river that forms a river island. The Banglore-Mysore highway bisects this island into two. This small town still holds remnants of the bygone era and all monuments are well maintained by ASI. In this blog I am sharing Places to visit in Srirangpatna.

srirangapatna places to visit

Before arriving at any place, I do little bit research about places I would like to visit. But in case of Sriranagpatna, I didn’t had much clue that there are so many places to visit in this small town. We reached Mysore by Noon from Coorg , checked into our hotel and later after quick lunch started for Mysore bus stand which was a mere 10 minutes walk from our hotel. After reaching to the bus stand we inquired about the buses and thereafter started our journey towards Sriranagpatna sightseeing.

As we got off from the bus at Sriranagpatna, we walked pass through street vendors and started walking towards one of the gate known as Banglore gate in the heart of the town. The town has other entrance gates namely Water,Delhi,Elephant and Mysore gate. These gates are entrances to the fort from different sides.

srirangapatna places to visit

The town was earlier enclosed as Srirangapatna fort which dates back to 15th century.Earlier it was built as mud fort and then during ruling of Mysore Wodeyar king it was rebuilt. It eventually came under Tipu Sultan; during his rule major changes were made to the fort. It was then developed as a prime defense base from where Tipu Sultan with his army had launched attack on British Army.

As we crossed the gate, first we saw Jami Masjid in bright yellow color. As we were about to decide from where to start with; one auto rickshaw came towards us and asked for sightseeing. We made conversations about the places and he explained about the tour.We then decided to tour around in auto. Here is list of Top Places to visit in Srirangapatna in a half day:

First we went to river side island, and crossed the Banglore Mysore highway. Across the highway, first stop was Gumbaz.

I could not go to Srirangapatna when I went to Mysore 2 months back. I’d definitely to check it out when I go next time. Thanks to your post I know that it is a must visit! Thank you for penning it down!

thank you ketki. Its a great historical place.

Highly interesting with the Cauvery River and the Death Palace, especially the symmetric arches.

yeah Glad you like it.

Nice post, Mayuri. Love this river island.

Thank you Niranjan

Such a beautiful place to explore with so much history. I would definitely plan to visit there by next year. Thank you, Mayuri for sharing your experience with us!

thank you for passing by.

I’ve never heard of any of these places, but from the pictures, I don’t know why I haven’t! It’s such a beautiful area!

Nice Mayuri! You managed to explore and see sooo much of the area, even without prior planning. I am really impressed! I guess it was lucky that you found the auto rickshaw driver to show you around. 🙂

All that architecture is beeeautiful! It is just a shame about the rubbish down by the river.

Thank you so much Josy

Have visited this place with Mysore trip. Loved every inch of it Srirangpatna. I really enjoy exploring such historical towns.

THank you so much anshul

Yay ya Siranpatna has so beautiful places.

I’ve never been to India so it was interesting to read about your adventures there. Hopefully someday I’ll be able to visit there myself!

Ohh yes India has so many hidden Gems.

Hope you can visit here soon.

I love when you have to enter a town through ancient gates. Always makes me wonder about the surprise I will find on the other side of the gate. I am sure that view of the Gumbaz in Srirangapatna is a great draw with its intricate carvings. The frescos in the Summer Palace would be something I would want to see. I am always amazed at how well the colours have been maintained. It looks like there is much see on a visit to Srirangapatna.

It has been quite a while since I visited the heritage part of Srirangapatna. For some reason, we always do the bird sanctuary and do not stop at the palaces. I must remedy that the next time I head in that direction. Your post shares a few unseen things or rather forgotten things – like the murals on the walls. Daria Daulat seems different from my memories – guess they have done a lot of restoration.

The frescoes are absolutely breathtaking. I’d love to walk around here and daydream about the people who once frequented! I feel like this is almost obligatory when visiting a sight of such historical and cultural importance. I had no idea about this part of history, but as a history nerd I enjoyed reading so much. Thank you!

Karnataka is on my list for a long time. I was in Kerala, but I had only two weeks, so I focused on Kerala during my last trip to India. I hope one day I will visit the gems of Karnataka, like Srirangapatna. Frescos of the Palace are fabulous, so detailed and beautiful. The place has a fantastic history.

I love the temples! The intricate details on the Daria Daulat Bagh have to be my favorite! I would love to visit Srirangapatna some day!

Wow Gumbaz is absolutely gorgeous! How had I not heard of it before? I love how detailed everything is! Definitely adding this to my bucket list with my son!

Tipu Sultan has a connection with Kolkata as well. So I usually gobble up anything that I find about him. I had wanted to visit Srirangapatna for a long time, but have not yet made it. So it was good to read about the place. The murals and frescoes look quite beautiful and colourful. The Gumbaz too looks beautiful.

Srirangapatna day trip from Mysore looks worth visiting and it has been mentioned lots in Tipu Sultan historic book. I loved the architecture of Ranganathswamy temple. Also Tipu Sultan’s palace – Dariya Daulat Bagh too looks interesting with those painting ceilings and frescoes. Even the Sangam spot where two Cauvery rivers meet look very beautiful.

Mysuru Srirangapatna: Beyond the tourist trail

B ENGALURU: Most visitors to Mysuru go to the palace, to Chamundi Hills, and then maybe the Brindavan Gardens. But for everything else in the city, they have little interest or time. And they might not even know should they have the interest,” says George Michell, writer-archaeologist and co-author of Mysuru Srirangapatna, (Jaico Publishing House; Rs 599), a new guidebook by the Deccan Heritage Foundation that aims to fill a knowledge gap about the two historical places of enormous importance.

“Mysuru and Srirangaptna are places of enormous historical interest with an architectural legacy, which has not been adequately served by the literature available to people today. And considering how many people visit Mysuru and Srirangapatna, the enormous footfall means that to get a proper professional guide is almost impossible. So this book is an opportunity to fill that gap,” Michell adds.

Co-authored by Malavika Murthy – a conservation architect, Caleb Simmons – faculty director of the Interdisciplinary Studies Program at the University of Arizona in Tucson, and Shivendra Urs, a writer-journalist, and Michell, the book explores the untold and oft-ignored history and architecture of Mysuru and Srirangapatna.

“The rationale is to interest readers in visiting those places and take in the history. This book not only describes all the interesting and lesser-known places, but also has pictures to accompany them. For instance, we have a couple of pictures showing the place of the Wadiyars in the 19th century before it burnt down. One engraving shows Krishna Raja Wadiyar III holding court within the palace,” Michell adds. Featuring maps of the places, the book takes its readers on a tour of different parts of the city, picking up the most important buildings that can be visited. And then it shifts to Srirangapatna and does the same for the forts and the island.

Unlike traditional guidebooks, Mysuru Srirangapatna is not just a catalogue of places; it is a visual and narrative feast, which acknowledges the multicultural layers in the region’s history. “We don’t have much of the early Wadiyar buildings left in Mysuru or Srirangapatna anymore. Whatever they may have built might have been demolished by Tipu [Sultan] and Hyder Ali when they came to power, but we don’t know. But there are some things that still stand from the early Wadiyar period, chiefly the Srirangapatna Ranganathaswamy temple. It probably even predates the early Wadiyars.

Tipu and Hyder Ali not only didn’t interfere with the temple but they actively supported it,” says Michell, adding, “But we have plenty of stuff built by Haider Ali and later Tipu, who were prolific builders and left various monuments in and around Srirangapatna. And when the Wadiyars returned to power, they, assisted by the British, started to build. From royal residences to civic buildings...there was a lot of activity in the 19th century going through to the 20th century. It’s one of the great building ears for this part of Karnataka.”

The region’s nearly three centuries of architectural evolution, driven by various ruling powers, showcase a diverse range of influences. “There is the Deccan Islamic tradition of the Golkonda-Bijapur. Tipu inherited that style for his mosques and tombs. Some of the indigenous South Indian styles went towards the temples and palaces that the Wadiyars built, including the old wooden palace that burnt down.

And when the British influence started to grow, suddenly the new classical architecture, the European style started to become prominent. There was this cocktail of Indian, European, and Mughal styles, which the British promoted, and local princes built in this style,” says Michell, who hopes that the book can serve to inspire readers to take notice of the oft-ignored yet important buildings and work towards preserving them.
