Sigma - sometimes represented simply by the corresponding character of the Greek alphabet - are a British drum and bass duo, hailing from Leeds, England.

Comprising Cameron Edwards and Joe Lenzie, Sigma were formed at the University of Leeds in 2006, where the pair were both students, and were both heavily involved in the underground drum and bass scene. Once they graduated, they moved to London, and initially became a three-piece with the introduction of Ben Mauerhoff - he’d later leave, though, due to logistical difficulties in 2008. That allowed the core pair to finally forge ahead with their plans for the group, beginning with the formation of their own label, Life Recordings.

After producing records for Hospital Records, they’d make their own entrance proper with two, two-part EPs; first, ‘Stand Tall’ in 2010, and then ‘Night & Day’ in 2011. The former year saw their commercial breakthrough - their collaboration with DJ Fresh, ‘Lassitude’, made number eleven on the UK dance chart. Since then, they’ve remixed tracks for artists as high-profile as Eric Prydz, Groove Armada, Skepta, Sway, and Ellie Goulding. Two singles with 3Beat in 2013 made an impression on the UK dance charts, but things stepped up to a whole other level a year later for the duo when they released their third collaboration with 3Beat, ‘Nobody to Love’ - it topped the UK singles charts.

They shot to fame earlier this year with a rework of Kanye West’s’ ode to his wife Kim Kardashian in ‘Bound 2’, chopping up the opening vocals, disregarding Kanye’s part, to produce the drum and bass smash hit of the summer.

Contrary to popular perception, Sigma is a duo, made up of Cameron Edwards and Joe Lenzie who met at Leeds University while attending drum and bass nights. Since ‘Bound 2’ hit the number one spot in the UK, the duo have been booked for DJ sets around the world, one of which I attended in Nottingham, just as ‘Bound 2’ was blowing up around the UK. They did not disappoint, dropping another of their own tracks, ‘Rudeboy’ before a sped-up rework of Keisza’s ‘Hideaway’. Sticking to some of the classic drum and bass tracks of the last few years, Andy C’s remix of Major Lazer’s’ Get Free’ is quickly followed up with Netsky’s ‘Love Has Gone’. After the set I could barely feel my legs and thought I had lost my voice from jumping and singing along throughout the night.

And with a new single, ‘Changing’, featuring vocals from none other than Paloma Faith, it’s sure to be another number one hit. Sigma are currently the kings of the drum and bass scene!

Sigma was great had the entire crowd dancing, they also had Labrinth as a special guest which topped off the night. Only negative was the venues drinks' (Electric Brixton) were incredibly expensive just over £11 for a tiny plastic cup of double vodka and lemonade, completely absurd.

Amazing concert, incredible production and music was fantastic. Would thoroughly recommend and definitely go again! Great party atmosphere in the stalls but would advise anyone that doesn't want to get a bit bashed around to go for the seated area!

What do teens mean when they say ‘sigma’?

What the sigma?

Some know “sigma” as the 18th letter of the Greek alphabet but it’s also teen slang for a cool dude.

According to Know Your Meme , sigma is “referring to a supposed classification for men who are successful and popular, but also silent and rebellious.” Sigma males are “considered ‘equal’ to Alphas on the hierarchy but live outside of the hierarchy by choice,” reads the website.

Urban Dictionary adds that sigma “is what all 10 year olds think they are.” As reported by British GQ , the word “sigma” was born from the misogynistic “manosphere.”

What does ‘sigma’ mean?

Philip Lindsay , a special education math teacher in Payson, Arizona, broke down “Sigma” on TikTok.

“There’s this group of people who have this hierarchy for males — there’s ‘alpha’ and there’s ‘sigma,’” Lindsay said in a video . “This is a group of people that mainly ranks males based on looks, success, that whole thing.”

Lindsay added, “So they have the ‘alpha’ which is the most successful, the best looking and then they have ‘sigma’ which is the same thing as an alpha but humbler.”

Another definition for “sigma” says Lindsay, is “the best.”

“Kids use Alpha and Sigma interchangeably,” Lindsay tells TODAY.com . “They don’t make much of a distinction between being humble or not, even though that’s (technically) the definition.”

Lindsay clarifies, “Beta is an insult. (It means) ‘You’re inferior to me and I’m better than you.'”

‘What the sigma?’

According to Lindsay, “What the sigma?” is traced to a SpongeBob SquarePants internet meme (which a spokesperson of Nickelodeon tells TODAY.com is fan-created).

In the video , Squidward and SpongeBob, characters from the cartoon show “SpongeBob Squarepants,” watch footage of a waffle cone dipped in chocolate syrup and sprinkles.

“That looks insane,” said SpongeBob in the video.

“That also looks very unhealthy,” replied Squidward, stating, “Erm, what the sigma?”

Lindsay said “sigma” is from the same culture as  mewing and looksmaxing , trends — according to the New York Times — that claim to help teens look better.

One example of “Looksmaxing” is “ Mewing ”: teens flatten their tongues to the tops of their mouths, to supposedly eliminate a double chin, a method that American Association of Orthodontists  says is not scientific. The teen version of “mewing” is a “hush” symbol and touching the jawline to mean, “I can’t talk.”

Lindsay tells TODAY.com that “sigma” is a classroom trend.

“They say, ‘Are you sigma Mr. Lindsay?’ or ‘Yo, that’s so sigma’ when I do something that pleases them like (assigning) math problems (to solve) with an online game,” he says, adding that in his classroom, “Sigma is going strong.”

Rape, Aggression and Defense Training

Rape, Aggression and Defense Training (RAD), provided by Public Safety and Police Services, is free to female students, faculty and staff. See announcement below to register for Sept. 16, 17, 19 training.

Extended Hours - The offices of Financial Aid and Student Accounts will be open until 5:30 p.m. Aug. 28-29.

Register for Rape, Aggression and Defense (RAD) Training - Provided by Public Safety and Police Services. Free to female students, faculty and staff. Training is scheduled 6 p.m., on Sept. 16 (Old Main, Room 22A) and Sept. 17 & 19 (Old Main, Georgian Room). You must attend all three sessions to complete the RAD program.
