Mrugagad Fort Trek

Mrugagad fort trek is a small fort and it is located in the Raigad District of the Maharashtra in India. It is known for it’s unique shape and it lies in the Sahyadri ranges. The base village is known as Bheliv and the fort is also referred to as the Bheliv fort trek.

Many ancient trade routes used to pass through the ghats in the Konkan area. Many forts were built along these ghats to protect these trade routes. Mrugagad fort was built on the Konkan side and Tung and Morgiri forts were built in the valley of Pawna river to protect the Sav Ghat route. After the construction of the Bhor Ghat route during the British era this route was not used any more and the importance of the Mrugagad fort came down.

Not much is known about the history of the Mrugagad fort trek. Judging by the structure of the rock formation, it must have been previously used as watchtower. Although the Umberkhind battle of Shivaji Maharaj with Kartalab Khan is famous in the vicinity of this fort, Mrugagad fort is not mentioned in this battle

Mrugagad stands tall at the height of 1750 feet from the ground level. The distance form Mumbai to Mrugagad fort via Bengaluru is 91.4 Km.

On the way to the fort, there is a small square mouth measuring 3 x 3 feet. The dimension of the cave is about 30 feet inside and there are two turns inside the cave. The inner end of the cave is much larger measuring 10×12 feet.

There is a small plateau halfway through the trek. There are remains of an outpost on this plateau. On the left side of the plateau, carved steps lead you to the top of the fort, and the small steps carved on the right side of the rock lead you to the cave tank dug in the rock. The tanks are dry and the outside of the cave is lined with circular limestone walls. The approach to this cave is quite dangerous and exposed and should be avoided during the monsoons.

An idol of lord Ganesha can be seen carved in the rock, on the right side of the steps. From here you can see signs that there is an east facing gate of the fort and you can see the fortified ramparts of the fort. Upon entering the fort, one can see the Mahishasurmardini idol and the broken Shivling as well as a large stone lamp.

There are three dry water tanks on the left side of the peak. One of these tanks is divided into two parts by a stone wall and the other is carved with steps to descend into the tank. There are a few bushes on the peak along with some unrecognised architectural  remains.

On the last peak to the west of the fort, there are two large dry rectangular tanks on this peak. The peak also has a large number of holes made to separate the slits from the rock. There is a flagpole in this area. Kurwand Ghat, Umberkhind and Sarasgad fort can be easily seen from here. The much higher hill that can be seen from the Mrugagad fort top is called Moradi cha Sulka or the Moradi pinnacle. Moradi pinnacle is the same cone shaped pinnacle that can be seen from the Lion’s point or the Tiger point.

The Mrugagad fort trek starts from the Bheliv village. A trail leads to the fort from the upper side of this temple in front of the village school. The trail goes through a dense forest, so you don’t feel tired to climb the fort.

The last two cones below the fort have a passage leading to the fort through the eastern gully between them. It takes about 45 minutes to reach this place from the village. The first cave is on the hill towards the right over here. Climbing the gully brings you to a small plateau with a hill towards the left. Simple rock climbing is required to ascend.

The hill has carved stairs that takes you to the top of the fort. Towards the right of this hill are a small set of stairs that takes you to a water tank. This steps are exposed and risky and should be avoided during the monsoons. It takes about an hour to reach the top of the fort and about an hour to explore.

How to Reach

The distance between khopali and bheliv is 30km. Start your journey from Khopoli Station. Sharing Rikshaw for Lonavala phata will be available. One can hire share-six seater to Parali village on Palikhopali Road. Six- seaters are available from Parali till its base village known as Bhelvi. Around 1 hour it takes you to reach there to the top of the fort.

Trek to Mrugagad Fort - Medium Difficulty Half Day Trek

Mrugagad is a small fort that is on the lower end of the mountain ridge that has the Lonavala Tiger Point at the top. The fort can be accessed from the base village called Bheliv, which is accessible from Jambhulpada junction on the Khopoli-Pali road.

At Bheliv, ask for Anant Dalvi (87938-40090) who can accompany you to as a guide to show you the trekking route. Though the route is fairly simple, some sections are tricky and dangerous for novice trekkers. It is best to take a guide along. The total duration of the trek should be around 2.5 hours.

At about half way up the climb, there is a small detour to visit a cave. Do venture into the cave. You have to crouch and crawl into it, but it is worth the experience!

mrugagad trek time

  • The first section from the entrance leads straight inwards, and then turns right
  • The small lateral section then ends with a step down a short vertical section
  • The vertical section leads to another lateral section, that ends in the chamber
  • The chamber is large enough for 2-3 people to sit and sleep comfortably

Though the cave is habitable, it is avoidable to actually stay here, as the cave is not properly ventilated.

The climb then continues through a chimney to reach the small plateau between the shorter peak and the main peak of Mrugagad. From this plateau, you can access the second cave. Though there are steps cut into the rock, this is a tricky section that needs careful steps. The view from the second cave is fabulous!

The next section of the climb starts back from the plateau, up the steep rock face that has steps cut into it, to reach the top of the main peak, where you are greeted by the altar to the Goddess Mahishasura Mardini - an avatar of Goddess Durga for destroying the demon Mahishasura.

You can then walk along the top of the hill to the other end, where a flag flutters in the wind. Along the way, you can see several water tanks, with ridges cut into the rock for water harvesting.

The entire trek can be completed in about 2.5 hours including the two detours to the two caves.

And just for fun, here is an animated Google Earth Video of the trek route:

Trek to Mrugagad and Umberkhind

Photo of Nikhil

If you staying in Pune and it's rainy season then your mind will take you to beautiful Mountains & Waterfalls But in Rainy season places like Lonavala, Khandala, Mulshi and Tamhini Ghat are heavily crowded on weekends, then you will like to opt out a less known place. After thinking a lot I started reading the list of Forts which I haven't explored, during that time I came across a Fort called Mrugagad. Name sounds different and it took my attention. I saw its pics on Google, I liked it and came to know it's rarely known, less people visit it, so I decided to explore on coming weekend.

Details From Pune given below

Name - Mrugagad Difficulty Level - Easy Time required - Max 2 hrs Base Village - Bheliv Distance from Pune - 120km Best time to visit - Rainy season

I read about this place on Tuesday, packed my bag on Wednesday itself and was very eager for upcoming weekend as it was going to be very beautiful.

Things to Carry

* Waterproof Bag * Min 2 Water bottles * Snacks like Wafers, Farsan, Chips * Energy drinks like Glucose * Fruits * Extra pair of Clothes * Shoes * First aid kit * Mobile, Camera on Personal risk * Plastic bag to cover your mobile and camera

Started my journey early morning, it was drizzling and I was lucky it wasn't raining harsh, start of the day I felt day is lucky n gonna be great. On the way only I had breakfast and before reaching the base Village I came across a name plate Umberkhind. As I know history a bit, I remembered, There was battle in Umberkhind and it was fought between Shivaji Maharaj and Kartalab Khan. As it was on my way I decided to do it and Pay my tribute to Brave Marathas

Finally reached the base Village Bheliv, parked my car in started taking info about the route. The villagers told, the route is easy, I just need to follow the markings which were made by trekkers, it sounded good and easy I decided to follow the instructions and started following the markings, the markings took me through dense forest, the forest was very dense and very beautiful and after 20 mins I came to a place where I need to start ascending the fort. The ascending was easy and there was one rock patch and way was narrow and was between the 2 rocks, anyway I had the experience of trekking so it wasn't a big challenge so I passed easily. As I was ascending, rising above the ground I started seeing the forest from top and beautiful mountain range with waterfalls. After some time I completed the first part of Ascending, there I saw a way, the way was towards cave, reaching the cave was very challenging and Thrilling, should be done only by Experienced Trekkers. After that there was a beautiful rocky stare case which starts the beginning of 2nd Phase of Ascending. Within no time I got on top of fort, the fort was small and nothing to explore, but it's one of the most Beautiful Photogenic place, so I spent most of my time in clicking. I had my lunch as carried it. I took rest for some time and started descending. Descended in half hr, reached the car and took rest for 20 mins and started my Journey towards Umberkhind

Umberkhind Umberkhind is the place where battle was fought between Shivaji Maharaj and Kartalab Khan. This battle was in dense forest where just 1000 Marathas defeated 20000 Mughals. For more details please read it in Google, after reading you will definitely feel proud to be part of Maharashtra. Umberkhind has only the Monument of Victory over Mughals and as it was raining season there was a Water stream. I checked the depth of water it was not over the knee so I played and enjoyed in water stream. At the end of the day I payed my tribute to the Brave Marathas and moved towards my home.

The place is small and one of the most beautiful and should be in list of every trek lover.

Keep Travelling, Keep Trekking and Keep Enjoying.

I would like to end with below Words...

“Live with no excuses and travel with no regrets”

“Don't listen to what they say, go see”
