Malarial prophylaxis is discretionary for this trip. Malaria exists in the area around Islamabad. However, incidences of urban transmission of malaria are extremely low. On holidays to more remote areas, you should also have a dentist check-up. A good online resource is Travel Health Pro. Dengue fever is a known risk in places visited. It is a tropical viral disease spread by daytime-biting mosquitoes. There is currently no vaccine or prophylaxis available and therefore the best form of prevention is to avoid being bitten. We recommend you take precautions to avoid mosquito bites

GROUP LEADER & SUPPORTING STAFF

Shimshal Pass Trek  will be led by an experienced Mountain Guide accompanied by a support crew.

Shimshal Pass Trek involves going to high altitude. During your trip, you will be above 3,000 metres for 1-2 days. This is not something that you should worry about; the human body is quite capable of adapting to a very wide range of altitudes, but we must follow some simple rules to acclimatize successfully. Before coming on this holiday you should get some basic advice on Tours and Treks at high altitudes.

From mid-June to August, we can expect to encounter temperatures as high as 40°C at Islamabad, Multan and Lahore, and 25°C in The Gilgit & Baltistan regions. Weather is generally good throughout the summer season with clear skies and little rain or snow. However, weather in mountainous areas is difficult to predict, and short-lived storms can occur at any time.

Shimshal Valley: A High Altitude Adventure in Northern Pakistan

To say that Shimshal Valley is a beautiful place with beautiful people would be an understatement – during my two-day escapade in this village, located in Northern Pakistan, I experienced some of the most breathtaking mountain scenery, epic journeys, and friendliest locals I’ve ever encountered.

My time in the Shimshal Valley was part of a longer trip to the Hunza Valley, but if I’m being honest, these two days happened to be some of the best moments of the entire experience.

This hidden gem is the remotest valley of Gilgit Baltistan, and trust me when I say it’s a wild ride to get there, but the payoff? Absolutely worth it.

Why Visit Shimshal Valley?

White Horn Peak Shimshal Valley

There are so many reasons to visit Shimshal Valley – for starters, it’s the highest human settlement in the Hunza District, perched at a dizzying altitude of 3,100 meters. This valley is also home to some of the most majestic peaks in the world, including Distaghil Sar and Shimshal White Horn.

Shimshal Valley Pass Trek Pamirs

Because this valley is hard to reach, you’ll encounter fewer tourists, making this a particularly authentic destination. Whether you want an epic trek or a quiet retreat, Shimshal Valley does not disappoint.

While this area has no shortage of jagged peaks, exotic wildlife, green pastures, and remote beauty, the real charm of Shimshal lies in its rich history, vibrant culture, and the sheer thrill of the journey – let’s dive in a little deeper.

Location and Geography of Shimshal Valley

Shimshal Valley Footbridge

Shimshal Valley is located about three hours east of Passu, in Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan. If you’re getting there from the larger Hunza Valley, it’s about a three- to four-hour Jeep ride.

Shimshal Valley Road from Jeep

As the gateway to the Shimshal Pass, a famous mountain trek, this area is a paradise for avid hikers and mountain enthusiasts. This valley also serves as a border connecting Pakistan’s Gilgit Baltistan with China.

History of Shimshal Valley

Yak Gujerav Lake Shimshal Valley Hunza

The Shimshal Valley was founded around four centuries ago by Mamu Singh, who belonged to the Burusho people and lived in Hunza. He was a member of the ruling family and was sent to Central Asia as an ambassador, but he ran away with his wife, Khadija, when relations between the two areas became hostile.

They were chased into the Upper Hunza River Valley on the slopes of Qarun Pir, where they lived for several years. Eventually, they migrated to what is now the Shimshal Valley.

Bridge to Shimshal Valley

For years, the Shimshal Valley was completely isolated from the rest of the world due to its remote and rugged location. In fact, it wasn’t until 2003 that this village opened up to tourists when the construction of a dirt road from Passu was finished.

Before the Shimshal Road, it took villagers a challenging three days to reach the nearest town. The trail there was also dangerous, crossing ice-cold streams and steep cliffs.

Culture and People of Shimshal

Cricket Ground Shimshal Valley

The people of Shimshal will likely be some of the most warm and welcoming people you’ll ever meet! In fact, some of the locals even invited me into their homes for a cup of chai; the hospitality here is unlike any other.

This community of 3,000 people is particularly co-operative – each family grows and produces just enough food for their needs. Because this community was isolated from the rest of the world for so long, most of the village still know how to make their own clothing, shoes, dishes, and other household items. However, the invention of the Jeep has come in handy since then!

Road to Shimshal Valley

The locals belong to the Ismaili Shias sect, led by Prince Karim Agha. The women in this village wear colorful clothing, long shirts, loose trousers, and embroidered hats, while the men wear western-style shirts, trousers, and wool hats.

The Shimshal people are known for their organic, sustainable way of life, growing most of their own food right in the village. And let me tell you, the food here is to die for, probably the freshest and most delicious in all of Pakistan!

Best Time To Visit Shimshal Valley

Shimshal Valley Overlook

The best time to visit Shimshal Valley is from May to August. I visited in early May and enjoyed mostly warm and sunny days. But remember, the winters can be harsh, with temperatures dropping to -27 degrees at night.

Because the road during most of the year is covered with snow, I’d suggest sticking to the warmer months!

Getting to Shimshal Valley

Shimshal Valley Village Field

Now, let’s talk about the epic journey to Shimshal – getting there is not for the faint of heart! Let’s just say that Shimshal Valley Road, connecting the valley to the Karakoram Highway, is an adventure in and of itself. This 53-kilometer road is one of the most dangerous on Earth, so figuring out how you’ll tackle this journey to Shimshal is worth careful thought and consideration.

You’ll have two main options to get to Shimshal: public transportation or a private jeep hire. Public transportation departs from Aliabad in Hunza every day around noon. Although the ride takes around five hours, it’s the cheapest option, costing about a few hundred rupees.

Shimshal Valley Road

After the van or Jeep leaves, you’ll begin to understand why this road is considered one of the most dangerous in the world. You may start to feel nervous, but remember that these drivers are very experienced and make the drive almost every day!

If you decide to hire your own Jeep, you can do this in Passu. Note that this option will cost you several pretty pennies – likely around 6000 rupees. Although I was terrified at certain times during this jeep ride, the scenery was absolutely stunning, and an experience I will never forget.

I’m not kidding when I say you will experience a range of emotions during this route, from awe and wonder at the natural beauty to complete and utter terror from this steep and dangerous path. However, I can also say that this thrilling ride is well worth it. After all, difficult roads often lead to beautiful destinations!

Places to Stay in Shimshal

Shimshal Valley Woman

When it comes to accommodation, Shimshal has a few small and cozy options. While you won’t find a Hilton or Marriott here, you will find incredible hospitably guest houses and lodges that are family-run.

Shimshal Tourist Lodge

Located in the heart of the Shimshal Valley and boasting stunning natural surroundings, this lodge offers carpeted rooms, an open-air campsite, a kitchen, and an onsite restaurant serving local cuisine.

Shimshal Embassy Guest House

This family-owned guest house will make you feel right at home! A cozy fireplace, stunning location, WiFi, and local cuisine make the Shimshal Embassy Guest House one of the best places to stay in Shimshal. Each room costs 2000 rupees per night, but bringing your tent and camping under the stars is cheaper!

Shimshal Heights Hotel

This cozy guest house is situated in the center of the village. Because this is a newer hotel, the rooms are in excellent condition. The owner will ask for 3000 rupees per night, but this is negotiable!

Things To Do in Shimshal

Shimshal Valley Yak

Whether you want an easy afternoon trail or a two-day trek, Shimshal is a paradise for hikers. This landscape is home to frozen waterfalls, towering mountains, and massive glaciers, so no matter where you choose to go, you’ll experience some incredible scenery.

For a multi-day trek, the Shimshal Pass is a must-do. Along the way, you’ll experience grasslands, majestic mountains, and hundreds of yaks! However, this hike is not for the faint of heart – it takes about 7 days to complete!

Because I was only here for two days, I decided to hike to the Yazghil glacier, about a 3-hour trek from the village. While you can trek to the glacier even if you are an inexperienced hiker (like me!), you’ll need an experienced guide to cross the glacier.

The hike itself was gorgeous, and once you reach the glacier, you’ll be rewarded with a view of several towering peaks in the distance. While most of the area’s glaciers are covered in moraine, the Yazhil glacier is particularly beautiful due to its pristine white color. I didn’t have time to cross it, but I was more than happy just doing the hike to and from this glacier.

Shimshal Valley Village View

Wildlife spotting

This area is abundant in exotic wildlife, which includes the Tibetan Wild Ass, Blue Sheep, and even the elusive Snow Leopard. You’ll probably notice less exotic animals like sheep, goats, cattle, and yaks as you mingle with the locals. Either way, you won’t be bored – don’t forget to bring your binoculars and a camera!

Explore the village

My favorite part of my trip to Shimshal was exploring this large, sprawling village. As you wander around, you’ll get a taste of what being a local in rural Pakistan is like. You’ll see women in colorful shalwar kameez tending their goats, kids playing cricket, and men working on the roads. This village is akin to stepping back in time.

Final Thoughts

If you want an adventure combining history, culture, scenery, and a dash of adrenaline, the Shimshal Valley is a destination you’ll never forget.

Shimshal Valley, nestled in the Karakoram Range of northern Pakistan, is renowned for its stunning natural beauty and unique cultural heritage. Situated in the Gilgit-Baltistan region, this remote valley is surrounded by majestic peaks and glaciers, offering breathtaking vistas. The valley is isolated, accessible only by a narrow jeep track, adding to its allure as an off-the-beaten-path destination. The inhabitants of Shimshal Valley are predominantly Wakhi people, known for their warm hospitality and rich cultural traditions. They have a strong connection to their land, relying on traditional practices like yak herding and farming.

This valley stands as a testament to the resilience and distinct cultural identity of the Wakhi people amidst the grandeur of the Karakoram Mountains.

Shimshal Valley

Shimshal Valley Road

The road to Shimshal Valley is very tough and dangerous. It's about 60 kilometers long and winds along steep mountainsides. The path is narrow, with sharp turns and no safety rails, making it risky to drive on. Only skilled local drivers who know the area well dare to drive on this road. It's challenging and thrilling but also very risky for anyone traveling on it.

Shimshal Travel Guide: The Lost Valley of Hunza

hiking in shaimshal

A word that, for everyone who knows it, evokes feelings of adventure and even danger.

Shimshal Valley is one of Pakistan’s most thrilling destinations, famed for being the home of what might be the country’s most dangerous road hidden deep in the Karakoram.

Renowned yet remote at the same time, Shimshal sees relatively few visitors due to its secluded, hard-to-reach nature. Locals hailing from the north know well the beauty and danger of the valley, but even to Pakistanis from the south of the country, Shimshal remains unknown for the most part, to say nothing of its status amongst foreigners.

Shimshal is possibly my favorite spot in Pakistan. It’s the perfect place for travelers wanting to venture far off the beaten path, and this guide is made for those seeking to do exactly that. Here you’ll learn the essentials of the valley: how to get there, when to visit, where to stay, and what you can do there. This is the ultimate Shimshal travel guide dudes.

This is the Karakoram Range truly at its greatest.

DID YOU KNOW THAT I RUN TOURS IN PAKISTAN?

Every year I lead unique trips to Pakistan including the K2 Base Camp Trek and to the Hunza Valley?

Why is Shimshal Valley Worth a Visit?

Straight away, Shimshal is not a casual, easy-to-reach destination. Getting to this valley – at the least – requires effort and going out of your way, and more than likely it’s going to require braving danger to some degree.

Personally, I wouldn’t have it any other way. Experiencing Shimshal, peeling back its many layers, and soaking in its exquisite, remote beauty requires a level of commitment that pays off in a BIG way.

Shimshal is for adventurous visitors looking for epic treks, an escape from civilization, and plenty of peaceful places to relax in silence. Jagged peaks, vast landscapes, the potential to see exotic wildlife, and the risk of danger await. If any of that appeals to you and you want to get away from Hunza’s often-stifling crowds, Shimshal is the place to be.

Shimshal Valley Pakistan

When to Visit Shimshal

Shimshal Valley is defined by rugged terrain and has a harsh, unforgiving climate. The weather will never be too hot here but it can become absolutely frigid. Shimshal is best visited between May and October when temperatures won’t fall to depths that most people will find unbearable and the road is in an acceptable state.

The summer months are more-frequented by tourists but thankfully, overcrowding is never an issue, making that time of year perfect for enjoying both Shimshal’s road and its many scenic treks.

Autumn is stunning but cold. I’ve been there in late October and the water pipes were frozen, which precludes the possibility of any running water, so consider what level of comfort you’re willing to forsake. I personally loved the tradeoff of sacrificing running water for the breathtaking colors and being the only visitor in the valley!

Shimshal Valley Pakistan

How to Get to Shimshal

Shimshal Village lies at the far end of a roughly 53-kilometer stretch of road that is considered one of the most dangerous and hostile on Earth, so as I’ve mentioned before, getting here requires effort, caution, and skill.

There is a police checkpoint at the front of the valley, but you don’t need a special permit to visit Shimshal as long as that’s where you’re staying. Simply show the guards your passport or National ID Card if you’re Pakistani, and you’ll be on your merry way.

Luckily, travelers have a variety of options available to them for reaching this spectacular slice of Pakistan. Public transportation and private jeep hires are both available, and taking on the road yourself is an option as well. Here I’m going to describe each of these choices and what you can do to take advantage of them, and for those who feel like taking their own vehicle, I’ll teach you in detail how to safely conquer this storied road.

Public Transport

Public transportation bound for Shimshal Valley leaves from Aliabad in Hunza daily around noon. The journey from here is roughly five hours long and will cost you just a few hundred rupees.  This is the cheapest option that is also reliable and – honestly speaking – probably the safest.

The Shimshal Valley turnoff from the Karakoram Highway occurs just after you pass through the village of Passu at the foot of one of the planet’s most bizarre, majestic mountain formations: the Passu Cones.

motorcycle karakoram highway

If you’re staying anywhere on the KKH between Aliabad and Passu, just tell the owner of the hotel/guesthouse you’re staying at that you want to take the public transportation to Shimshal, and they will make the calls necessary to arrange for a pickup in front of your hotel.

Once your van or jeep exits the Karakoram Highway and begins the journey to Shimshal, you will undoubtedly feel the excitement and possibly fear at points along the trip and when this happens, it’s important to remember one thing: relax and keep calm.

The drivers responsible for your safety are guys who do this every day, and are extremely capable pros for whom this experience is just another day at the office. So relax knowing you’re in good hands and take time to soak in the seriously ridiculous vistas this valley has to offer.

Hiring Your Own Jeep

This option is technically possible for Shimshal, but not one I would recommend. The reason for that is that unlike Naltar or Chapursan valleys, which both have relatively sizeable settlements at their entrances that house jeeps ready for hire (Nomal and Sost, respectively), the settlement nearest to Shimshal’s entrance is only the tiny town of Passu.

chapursan valley Pakistan

That means that employing a jeep for Shimshal is gonna be very expensive, even more so than hiring one for the aforementioned valleys above (which both cost at least 6000 rupees). On top of that, you’re going to be on foot most of the time anyway once you’re in Shimshal Village, so there’s not much to be gained by shelving out unnecessarily large amounts of cash for your own jeep.

In short, a jeep hire will cost you a pretty penny . Several of them. And there’s just not much advantage a private jeep driver affords you relative to the other choices, making this the least attractive option.

Doing it Yourself

shimshall valley guide

This is where the fun begins, but let’s get a few important things out of the way first: Here I’m going to focus on everything you need to know about riding a motorcycle on the Shimshal Road.

An automatic transmission car built for the cities like a Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla – both popular in Islamabad, for example – simply can’t complete this journey. If that’s the vehicle you’re thinking about bringing to Shimshal, it’s best to find an alternative.

Next, it’s crucial to understand that I’m not exaggerating when I say that this road brings with it a huge amount of danger and risk. The steep degree and wide variety of danger is unmatched by most other off-road tracks you can find anywhere, and as such, I don’t recommend attempting this road unless you have a considerable amount of experience riding motorbikes on off-road tracks.

You will need to have the right bike and ensure it’s in good condition. A Suzuki 150 cc or a Honda 125 cc will get the job done, and before you set out, make sure everything is good to go: fresh oil, a snug chain, tires, and more.

I’ve seen a YouTuber successfully complete this road on a 1000 cc bike, but trying to replicate that is a terrible idea because that is a heavy bike and should you have a breakdown along the way, finding parts for repairs will be impossible and your bike will be doomed. A lighter-weight Suzuki or Honda won’t have any of those issues. There are also points on the road covered in sand and a heavy bike will sink right in – not ideal.

shimshal travel guide

I’ve divided the Shimshal Road into seven sections, each of which I’ll break down here and explain what you can expect and how best to keep safe while enjoying the ride.

Riverside – Don’t let it’s calming, Florida retirement community-sounding name fool you: this section is dangerous. Following just above the Shimshal River for several kilometers, Riverside is known for small hills interspersed between mostly level terrain with sharp bends along the river, full of loose rocks and fine sand that make keeping traction difficult.

Those patches of tiny, loose rocks and fine sand can sneak up on you, and landslide risk is ever-present, so keep an eye out.

Winding Road – Beginning just after you cross the river for the first time, this section – you guessed it – winds gently uphill for a few kilometers until the next section begins. This is mostly pleasant, carefree riding with no landslide risk, but don’t let your guard down.

Shimshal Valley Pakistan

The Fall – Adrenaline-soaked, very fun, and extremely dangerous, you’ll know when this section begins. This area is defined by the road clinging to a narrow path that hangs onto the side of the mountain, just above a gargantuan chasm that plunges into the Shimshal River far below.

Like the road itself, the views here are jaw-dropping, but don’t let that distract you. Rockfall is a constant threat, and you never know when a jeep or motorbike could come screaming around the corner from the opposite direction.

Valhalla - Starting just after the road descends into a valley, this section consists of vast, wide-open spaces interrupted by a few short bursts of road along the river. A bit bumpy and a few very manageable patches of fine sand here and there, this part is mostly fun and personally, I fucking love it! Suggested riding playlist: anything by AC/DC.

Shimshal Valley Hunza

The Power Station – Only a few hundred meters long, this section gets a special dedication in this guide thanks solely to one stretch of fine sand that is only about 30 meters in length following along a large pipe, but is hellish to drive on. It’s very thick and traction is difficult to maintain, making riding dangerous and quite slippery. When you see the Power Station on your left-hand side, you’ll know to get ready.

The Glacier – This section takes you around the base of a sizable glacier on your right. Hilly and very jarring, the roads here are as are bumpy as the views are stunning. Landslide danger is a risk here, so keep glancing uphill often to stay aware.

Shimshal Valley Pakistan

The Homestretch – Comprising the last ten kilometers or so of the journey, this section is mostly flat and free of landslide danger, but there are several sketchy patches of fine sand that can cause you to spin out if you’re moving too quickly. Watch out for those and you’ll make it to Shimshal Village in no time.

The street conditions in the village itself are abysmal and potentially dangerous – I myself got hit by a jeep here once when the driver failed to look behind him before reversing, so watch out.

Before wrapping this up, it needs to be said that you shouldn’t attempt this road alone . At the least, go with a partner because if a breakdown happens and you’re solo, you could be alone in the wilderness with tens of kilometers to go in either direction before reaching even the possibility of help.

Adding to the danger, this road will have ice patches on it in the colder months, some of which will be hard to spot in time before you’re finding out first-hand what it’s like to go ice skating on a motorcycle.

Keep an eye out and never stop exercising care. Safe riding, amigos!

Where to Stay in Shimshal

While not exactly a crowded tourist destination like Naran or Hunza, Shimshal, fortunately, does have a number of accommodation options available for the traveler. Being hidden deep in the mountains means that travelers are truly on an island, but you’ll still be able to find places to stay that are both comfortable and affordable without too much trouble.

There is now a cell tower in the village, but it doesn’t seem to make much difference as both cell signal and internet are practically nonexistent. You may be able to receive a text here and there, possibly a phone call with spotty reception, but consider Shimshal an off-the-grid destination.

shimshal travel guide

Don’t worry about trying to book in advance online, that’s virtually impossible and not necessary anyway, since you’ll definitely be able to find lodging on the day you arrive with little effort.

Shimshal Valley is populated by an ethnic group found in northern Pakistan called the Wakhi, and to be honest, I’ve found them to be the most endlessly hospitable people in the world. They go out of their way to greet travelers and will always ensure you are taken care of with a comfortable bed, delicious food, and hot chai all for a more than reasonable price.

On top of that, Shimshal has a rich history of serving as a supply depot and drop-off point for tradesmen traversing the Silk Road in both directions. The village was in the middle of one of the five Silk Road routes that ran through Central Asia, so its people have been greeting travelers for generations.

shimshal travel guide

This legacy can be seen on a path streaking across the mountains on the northern side of the valley. That path has been there for centuries, and that route and all the history that has transpired on it is quite a thought to contemplate.

Here you’ll find information on the few guesthouses and lodges of Shimshal village. Regardless of where you stay, expect prices for rooms to fall between 2000-3000 rupees per night, but keep in mind that 3000 rupees nightly is the absolute maximum you should pay. Negotiate with your host and ensure they don’t attempt to charge more than that.

Shimshal Heights Hotel and Restaurant

Being very new, this hotel’s rooms are in good condition and is located so it is one of the first options you’ll see on the road, located on the right-hand side.

Expect the owner to ask for 3000 rupees for night, but this is negotiable. The owner will attempt to charge excessively high prices for the food as well.

Sifat Guesthouse

Located about a hundred meters down the road from Shimshal Heights Hotel on the left-hand side is Sifat Guesthouse, a well-known, budget-friendly establishment in town.

Rooms should cost 2000 rupees per night.

Shimshal Embassy Guesthouse and Camping Site

Following the road for another few minutes, you’ll find this place owned by Mirza Dad on the left-hand side of the road.

A room will cost 2000 rupees per night, but if you have your own tent, you can sleep under the stars for far cheaper! I opted to stay here for a few nights and it was very pleasant.

What to do in Shimshal

From top to bottom, Shimshal is a trekker’s and climber’s paradise. There are so many treks to do here, each of varying length and difficulty levels, and ALL of them are spectacular. You can even scale peaks under 6000 meters without a special permit if you’re equipped and skilled enough to do so, and if the season is right (think late October), it’s possible to scale frozen waterfalls above the village as well.

hiking in shaimshal

If you’re seeking to go on a lengthy trek that will require the use of mules and porters, make these arrangements in advance as it will be impossible to do so while in Shimshal village itself. Additionally, multi-day treks will require you to obtain permits in advance through an agency.

The Shimshal Pass Trek is one of the region’s most prominent treks, and for good reason. Taking about a week to complete, this trek brings you through some of the rawest terrain Pakistan has to offer. Several tour companies offer packages for this trek.

Shimshal has hiking options ranging from easy to nightmare-difficulty, but it’s important to know your limits. The valley has frozen waterfalls, gigantic mountains, and massive glaciers to scale and cross, and nothing above moderate difficulty should be attempted without a guide, proper equipment, and prior experience.

Bargain for Crystals in Shimshal

Northern Pakistan is well-known for being an area that produces lots of crystals. You’ll find souvenir shops in Karimabad selling quartz and other crystals and gems. Some shops will try to sell you fake stuff – others will just overcharge because you are a foreigner.

In Shimshal though, you can go right to the source. There are a handful of quartz miners that can come to your guesthouse and sell you a crystal directly from their backpack. Just ask the person you are staying with and I am sure they can make a call. Don’t expect the crystals to be super cheap (but they will be high quality). Remember that in some cases, these guys hiked 3-4 days to get this stuff.

From memory, we paid about 20000 rupees for a bunch of crystals – probably 10 pounds worth.

What to Bring

  • A headtorch.
  • A sleeping bag rated to freezing temperatures. Nights can get cold, though you can always ask your host for more blankets.
  • A small daypack (40 liters) should be enough unless you’re going on a lengthy trek.
  • Camping gear if you plan on sleeping under the stars.

Shimshal Valley: A Wrap-Up

Shimshal is a mini-showcase of all the best that the Karakoram of Pakistan have to offer: epic journeys, raw beauty, one of our planet’s most spectacular roads, and as many thrills as you could possibly want.

hiking in shimshal

Those seeking an unforgettable experience in one of Pakistan’s most isolated locations can’t pass up a visit to this majestic valley. There truly is no other place like it, and as I sit here writing this, I can’t wait to be back amongst the wilds of Shimshal, heading into those mountains once again.

Always remember to Leave No Trace: Shimshal is a remarkable example of untouched natural beauty, and it’s our duty as travelers to help keep it that way. Do your part to keep everywhere you go clean, and show both the land and the people that live on it the respect they deserve.

shimshal trek

Almost 1000 yaks and several thousand sheep and goats graze in the Shimshal Pamir, an extensive alpine grassland above 4500m. In late May, women and children leave Shimshal village for Shuizherav. In June, they move to Shuwerth, the main summer settlement just beyond the Shimshal Pass. In early September, they move back to Shuizherav, and in early October, they return to Shimshal village.

Two-trails from Shimshal village join at Purien-e-Ben. One, known locally as tang (gorge), goes by the Pamir-e-Tang River. The other, known locally as uween (pass), crosses two arduous passes (Uween-e-Sar and Shachmirk, both above 4500m). The uween trail was the standard way until 1997 when an all-important footbridge across the Pamir-e-Tang River was built and the tang trail was widened. Both routes have serious exposure. Shimshalis continue to improve the tang trail and hope one day to be able to take yaks along it rather than the uween trail.

For an authentic Pamir experience, try going via the tang trail and returning via the uween trail (see alternative Route A,). Another highly recommended alternative is to combine this trek with the Qachqar-e-Dur and Shpodeen Pass trek (p) returning to Shimshal village via Shpodeen Pass. It’s also possible to combine this trek with the Boisum and Chafchingol Passes trek (p), joining it at Shpodeen.

The Swiss Foundation for Alpine Research 1:250,000 orographical map Karakoram (Sheet 1) covers the trek. It doesn’t label Zardgarben, Shachmirk and Uween-e-Sar Passes, nor any place names along either route to Shuizherav. Shuwerth is labeled as Shuwari.

Guides and Porters

Local assistance is indispensable crossing exposed trail along the Pamir-e-Tang River, massive scree slopes on the uween trail, as well as the difficult trails into and out of Purien-e-Ben. Porters may ask for higher per-stage wages or for reduced weight of loads when going via the uween trail.

Traditionally, it’s six stages one way (12 stages round trip) between Shimshal village and Shuwerth via the uween trail, and five stages one way (10 stages round trip) via the tang trail. The stages via the uween trail from Shimshal village are: (1) Zardgarben; (2) Yarzeen; (3) Purien-e-Ben; (4) Arbab Purien; (5) Shuizherav; (6) Shuwerth; and (7-12) six stages to return via the same route. The stages via the tang trail from Shimshal village are: (1-2) Purien-e-Ben (two stages, not three); (3) Arbab Purien; (4) Shuizherav; (5) Shuwerth; and (6-10) five stages to return via the same route. The tang trail has always been one stage shorter in each direction than the uween trail.

Now that the tang trail is the standard way, villagers, in theory, earn one less stage in each direction. Not happy with this perceived loss of revenue, some Shimshalis say the de facto stages of the tang  trail starting from Shimshal village changed from five stages one way to these six stages one way (or from 10 to 12 stages round trip): (1) Gar-e-Sar; (2) Past Furzeen; (3) Wuch Furzeen; (4) Arbab Purien; (5) Shuizherav; and (6) Shuwerth. However, the improved tang trail is significantly easier and shorter than the uween trail, and stage inflation of 20% hardly seems justified. Shimshalis actually have an opportunity to earn more money now that the easier trail enables more trekkers to make it to the Pamir. The village still needs to address and resolve this issue, so discuss this with whoever you hire before starting out.

Day 1 : Shimshal Village to Wuch Furzeen

7-9 hours, 15.1km, 685m ascent, 320m descent

Follow the Shimshal River east (upstream) from Shimshal village (3000m) and fill water bottles at the spring before Michael Bridge, which is the only water for hours along this trail. Cross Michael Bridge, built in 1984 with money donated by Canadian Dr Michael Pflug, to the river’s true right bank. Avoid the trail to Zardgarben, which climbs beyond the footbridge. Instead, veer right following the wide river bed 1½ hours, or 5km, to the confluence of the Shimshal and Pamir-e-Tang Rivers.

Ford the Pamir-e-Tang River to its true left bank, marveling at the immense gorge. When the water is too high, cross via a footbridge some minutes upriver. Ascend the steep spur between the two rivers for 2km, or 1½ hours. On the ascent, Shachmirk Pass is visible to the north-east. After the initial climb from the river, round a bend and enter a basin. The climb continues steadily through artemisia steppes, passing lots of igneous rock. Just above the basin, the trail splits; take the right fork to Gar-e-Sar. The left fork is a deceptively well-established trail that leads to Nogordum Uween (Bear Pass), a junipers stand in the canyon below Yarzeen. Several cairns mark Gar-e-Sar (3502m), which means ‘top of the rock’. Here you have superb vistas of the Yazghil Glacier, Adver Sar and these hard-to-see 7000m peaks of the Hispar Muztagh: Kunyang Chhish and Yukshin Gardan.

From Gar-e-Sar, follow level galleries passing eroded cliffs on the canyon’s opposite side. Reach Shanj in 15 minutes, a scree-filled gully where an unreliable trickle of water flows below the trail in an awkward spot. Shanj are the boards uses to frame the place in a Wakhi home where you leave your shoes, which someone apparently got from this now-barren place. The trail and galleries deteriorate, although Shimshalis have worked to improve a dangerous Class 2 section here called Dhurik Purien. Traverse 450m above the river on exposed trail 1½ to two hours, then descend a steep 130m scree slope to Past Furzeen (3517m, ‘lower birch grove’). A clear side stream provides the first reliable water since Shanj, but there are no level tent sites.

From Past Furzeen, the trail climbs along the clear stream, soon leaving it to ascend the tricky section of trail known as Guldin Purien. The route climbs steadily and traverses high before descending a scree gully to Wuch Furzeen (3365m, ‘upper birch grove’). Above the Pamir-e-Tang River is a hut named Charra Khun. Just west of the hut is a small spring, which, if dry, necessitates an awkward trip down to the river for silty water.

Day 2 : Wuch Furzeen to Shuizherav

6-8 hours, 18.5km, 985m ascent

Descend to the Pamir-e-Tang River in 15 minutes and cross the footbridge to its true right bank. Continue along the river for 30 minutes, climbing a short scree slope to a flat area with stone rounds 60m above the river. Follow the trail, built by Khyal Beg, climbing 150m along galleries and descend into Purien-e-Ben (3596m) in another 45 minutes.

Cross the Pamir Mai Dur River over a footbridge. Climb 320m on the steep 30-degree trail up the canyon wall out of Purien-e-Ben, through the doorway (darwaza), and up the juniper staircase (purien) one hour to the level plain above, called Purien-e-Sar (3916m). Mungalig Sar is the prominent peak to the east, and Adver Sar the one to the west. The striking Chat Pirt massif, which rises south of the Pamir-e-Tang River, supports a blue sheep population on its grassy lower slopes, which can be reached only via faint, difficult hunters’ paths.

From Purien-e-Sar, the walk to Shuizherav becomes much easier. The trail traverses dry artemisia-covered hillside high above the river (called Shuizherav above Purien-e-Ben), crossing several tributary streams in their narrow gorges. Traverse gently to a rocky rise and reach the first side stream, Kushk Yarzeen (dry juniper) in 1¼ hours. Arbab Purien (3931m), the nicest of these side valleys and a good spot for lunch, in 30 minutes farther where a clear spring flows near the small hut next to the rushing stream beneath distinctive red rocks. Just beyond Arbab Purien is the grave of Ghulam Nasir, a young man who died in the Pamir in 1995 of appendicitis. In one hour, pass above Miter Kishk (where a man named Miter tried to cultivate) and descend towards the river. Follow the rocky trail along the river for 45 minutes to the confluence of the Gunj-e-Dur (in Wakhi, gunj means ‘a distant treasure/store house’; dur, ‘a valley where sheep are kept’) and Shuizherav rivers. Cross a sturdy wooden footbridge to the Gunj-e-Dur River’s true left bank. Pass the few huts at Qerqazi Kishk (where a man named Qerqazi tied to cultivate) and follow the Shuizherav’s true right bank two to 2½ hours to the large summer settlement of Shuizherav (in Wakhi, shui means a ‘place with a lot of rock where it’s hard to walk’; zherav, a ‘glacial river’), with many huts on both sides of the river. Below Shuizherav (4350m), along the true right bank, is a grassy area for camping amid quiet mountain splendour.

Day 3 : Shuizherav to Shimshal Pass

3 hours, 8km, 385m ascent

Cross the wooden footbridge to the Shuizherav’s true left bank and ascend a side stream’s true right bank. The easy climb to Abdullah Khan Maidan (4600m) takes one hour. These pastures are the precincts of women and children who have a rule; one cannot enter the pastures in a sad mood. Everyone must be happy and it’s best to enter the pastures singing!

Stroll two hours through flowery fields amid herds of yaks and sheep, skirting the two large lakes that lie on the watershed between South Asia and Central Asia to the Shimshal Pass (4735m). The most pleasant camp sites (4700m) are in the level area just north of (below) Shimshal Pass, in view of the lakes. It is possible to climb Mungalig Sar from here if you are properly equipped (see the boxed text ‘Peak Possibilities’.

Side Trip : Shuwerth

1 hour, 2km, 170m ascent, 170m descent

Fifteen minutes beyond the almost unnoticeable Shimshal Pass is the main summer settlement of Shuwerth. Women here are constantly busy with milking, herding and converting the milk to qurut (cheese). If you want to camp close to Shuwerth, ask the villagers to suggest a suitable spot. Most trekkers enjoy at least one day visiting Shuwerth.

Days 4-5 : Shimshal Pass to Shimshal Village

2 days, 41.6km, 2055m descent, 320m ascent

Retrace your route along the Shuizherav and Pamir-e-Tang Rivers to Shimshal village, camping at Wuch Furzeen on Day 4.

Alternative Route A : Shimshal Pass to Shimshal Village

The more difficult uween trail offers a challenging alternative to retracing your steps along the tang route.

Alternative Day 4 : Shimshal Pass to Purien-e-Ben

6-9 hours, 16.7km, 1104m descent

Leave the Shimshal Pamir by following the trail back to Purien-e-Ben (3596m), where the uween trail leaves the tang trail. This camp site is in a narrow box canyon amid fantastic eroded loess towers. Water is very silty in the afternoon, but generally settles quickly. A hard-to-reach hot spring is above Purien-e-Ben. Crossing the two passes on the uween trail the next day is somewhat easier if you can go 2.5km beyond Purien-e-Ben and camp in Targeen (see Alternative Day 5).

Alternative Day 5 : Purien-e-Ben to Zardgarben

8-10 hours, 15.6km, 1764m ascent 1285m descent

This day illustrates why the term ‘hardihood’ aptly describes Shimshalis. Crossing the demanding Shachmirk and Uween-e-Sar passes with more than 3000m of total elevation gain and loss is one of the toughest nonglacier days anywhere in the Karakoram. Starting early is essential.

The trail starts with a 240m scree ascent out of Purien-e-Ben, followed by a more gentle traverse one to 1½ hours to the stream at Targeen (3795m). With Rockfall danger, no fuel for porters, and only room for two tents along the stream’s true left bank or room for three or four tents a few minutes above on the true right bank, it’s not an inviting camp site. A difficult-to-access hot spring is below Targeen.

It takes two to 2½ hours to ascend 765m over scree to reach Shachmirk Pass (4560m). Its name means the place where the dog (shach) died (mirk). Hopefully, you’re not feeling like that dog, and can enjoy the fine views of Destaghil Sar, Adver Sar, the snowy Yazghil Glacier, Kunyang Chhish (7852m), Pumori Chhish, Yukshin Gardan (7530m), and east to Chat Pirt and Mungalig Sar.

The 1½ hours to two hours’ and 710m steady descent to Yarzeen begins immediately. The trail is clearly visible, steep and, in a few places, loose. The rushing stream at Yarzeen (3850m; ‘the place of juniper’) makes a great, and the only, lunch spot. Years of cook fires, however, have eliminated almost all the juniper that once grew here. Yarzeen is a possible camp site, but has room for only one small tent and no more than four people, including porters. Larger trekking parties must continue over the second pass the same day.

The 810m scree ascent to Uween-e-Sar (4650m) begins immediately from Yarzeen. It’s even more arduous than the ascent to Shachmirk, and takes 2½ to three hours. The first 30 minutes or so on a faint path is extremely steep, loose and exposed, so take care not to knock rocks onto anyone below. Views from the pass extend from Destaghil Sar, Kanjut Sar and Yukshin Gardan to Chat Pirt.

The one to 1½ hours 575m descent to Zardgarben (4075m), visible west of the pass, is on a comparatively good trail. Head for the welcoming grassy expanse below.

Alternative Day 6 : Zardgarben to Shimshal Village

2½-3 hours, 6.9km, 1075m descent

See Day 7 of the Qachqar-e-Dur and Shpodeen Pass trek (p) for a description between Zardgarben and Shimshal village.

Alternative Route B : Shimshal Pass to Shimshal Village

Returning to Shimshal via Pamir Mai Dur and Shpodeen Pass makes an unforgettable finale to the Shimshal Pamir trek.

Alternative Day 4 : Shimshal Pass to Arbab Purien

5-6 hours, 19.3km, 804m descent

Retrace your steps Downvalley to Arbab Purien (3931m).

Alternative Day 5 : Arbab Purien to Pamir Mai Dur

4 hours, 8km, 639m ascent, 222m, descent

Follow the stream north-west from Arbab Purien, cross the approximately 4570m ridge, and descend to meet the Pamir Mai Dur, north of Purien-e-Sar, in 1½ hours. The trail stays high above the Pamir Mai Dur River’s true left bank as it gently goes north-west upvalley. In one hour, pass Chashkin, a small maidan with a spring. In another 1½ hours, reach the confluence of the Pamir Mai Dur and Qachqar-e-Dur rivers. Ford the Qachqar-e-Dur River and camp along its true right bank north of the huts at Pamir Mai Dur (4348m) . It’s one stage between Arbab Purien and Pamir Mai Dur.

Alternative Days 6-8 : Pamir Mai Dur to Shimshal Village

Day 6 : pamir mai dur to khush dur-e-gush.

3-4 hours, 6.3km, 581m ascent

Climb the hill behind the huts and continue west well above the Pamir Mai Dur’s true left bank. Reach a mixed rocky and grassy area with a spring called Rana Kuk after one to 1½ hours. Cross a side stream in 45 minutes, then traverse the black moraine rubble coming from the north. Occasional cairns mark the 30-minute route over the shale-like rock. Staying along the true left bank, pass well above the confluence of a tributary joining from the south. The trail grows faint as you enter into a gorge. Cross to the Pamir Mai Dur’s true right bank after crossing a side stream coming from the north and before the confluence of two streams. The valley divides here and the route to Shpodeen Pass, which remains hidden from view, is upvalley to the south-west (left). Ascend along the true right bank of the left branch to grassy Kush Dur-e-Gush (4929m, ‘mouth of the happy valley’), reaching it within an hour of entering the gorge.

Day 7 : Khush Dur-e-Gush to Shpodeen

5-6 hours, 3km, 417m ascent, 875m descent

Work up the slope to bypass to the south (left) of spectacular cascades and a gorge. Shpodeen Pass becomes visible ahead. Above the cascades, cross the braided stream and continue up to where the stream emerges from a snowfield. Ascend the snowfield to reach Shpodeen Pass (5346m), two to 2½ hours from Khush Dur-e-Gush. From the pass, Adver Sar, Destaghil Sar, Momhil Sar and Lupgar Sar are visible. Shpodeen Pass can be snow covered and corniced early in the season, but there’s no glacier on either side.

Steeply below and 2km to the west is Shpodeen in the Zardgarben Valley. The west side of the pass is dry, but the route can be icy early in the season. The descent is over extremely steep scree ranging between 25 and 35 degrees for two hours until the angle lessens as you reach the valley floor. The Class 2 route down a limestone and shale gully (slightly to the left) is preferable to avoid a Class 3 limestone rock face (a little to the right). Jenny Visser-Hooft, who crossed the pass in 1925, described the descent thus:’… on all sides the rocks rose in superb structures with beautifully sculptured, bold outline and dolomite colours’. Continue another 30 minutes, following the stream, and then another hour to the flat,  grassy expanse of Shpodeen (4471m) above the Zardgarben River’s true left bank. Water comes from an intermittent clear stream or tiny springs along the river’s edge.

Looking back to the east, the Shpodeen Pass cairn is distinguishable, but barely visible on the ridge. The route lies between the golden spur and black side spur.

Day 8 : Shpodeen to Shimshal Village

4-5 hours, 13km, 1471m descent

Shimshal Trek

22 DAYS / 21 NIGHTS

Shimshal is the last remnant of true Hunza culture that exists near Pakistan’s Pamir range, east of the town of Passu in upper Hunza valley.

Our journey begins at Dut and we reach the remote village of Shimshal in about three days. At each step we are amazed how a path has been carved in this deep and narrow ravine on the way to Shimshal . The reason why Shimshal was located in such an out-of-the-way place is because this is where the Mir (ruler) of Hunza used to send his people who were found guilty of crimes and also those who he just did not like!

Shimshalis now are a proud and hardy folk. Their hospitality is legendary and the natural beauty that they inhabit makes us feel that perhaps the Mir sentenced them to heaven, not hell!

Our trek now veers northwards from Shimshal and we enter the lovely and remote Ghujerab valley . Here we cross the Boesam Pass and the Chapchingiol Pass to reach the trail head at Kuksel . This is where we meet the KKH and our jeeps, which will transport us back to Hunza.

The trek from Shimshal to Kuksel takes us into a very remote area and gives us a chance to see some of the endangered wildlife in the Khunjerab National Park . If we are lucky we may be able to observe Markhor, Ibex, Marcopolo Sheep and even the elusive magnificent Snow Leopard . This is ideal high Pamir meadow country strewn with thousands of colorful flowers. This is a tough trek and ropes are provided for various river crossings and as aid at other steep places.

Pakistani climbers need international accreditation

He suggested, and I concur, that Pakistani climbers need certification from accredited alpine high altitude bodies like Nepali Sherpa have.

This way they will be able to claim due share for their hard work.

This is only possible if the Government, Pakistan Army that have alpine training institutes open up their doors for climbers of

Most of the high altitude climbers already know how to fix ropes, hooks, screws, and pitons – it’s just the certification that they lack.

This way Pakistani climbers will be able to get the foreign exchange that the Nepali Sherpa are collecting from Pakistani mountain expeditions.

One Shimshal climber gave me a matter-of-fact account of his one-hour stay on top of K-2.

He said that he voluntarily stayed up there in grave danger, and re-assessed K-2s correct height.

The Italian supplied a 2 kg GPS meter and found it to be 2 meters short of the official 8611 m.

Ismaili Jamaat Khana

It is odd that the Shimshal people, who belong to the Ismaili sect of Islam, which is a Sufi-oriented sect, do not allow others to enter the premises of Jamaat Khana.

Sufiism and Ismaili sect were supposed to be less ritualistic.

I find it fascinating that there is a shrine of the famous Sufi and friend of Jalal ud Din Rumi, Shams of Tabriz, close to Shimshal.

Considering the Persian origin of Wakhi people and their Sufi orientation, it is much possible Shams of Tabriz, the wandering Dervish might have visited this place in the 13 th century.

The ULTIMATE Shimshal Valley Travel Guide (2024)

A Pakistan travel guide to Shimshal Valley, one of Pakistan’s most remote and magical hamlets. Includes info on how to get to Shimshal Valley, where to stay in Shimshal Valley, and what to do there!

Shimshal Valley wasn’t a part of my plans.

True to my often sporadic travel tendencies, I ended up there on a whim, and what I discovered will absolutely have me heading back for more.

Shimshal is a remote valley within Hunza, and at over 10,000 feet it’s the highest valley in the district. It takes about 3-4 hours to reach Shimshal, and the treacherous yet stunning road begins by taking a turn near the famous village of Passu.

Fun fact: The road wasn’t even completed until 2003, beforehand locals had to walk for days to reach the KKH!

reddish tan mountains at golden hour pakistan

The landscape is magnificent, and nothing like anything else I’ve seen in Pakistan. Shimshal has long been famous for its treks and mountaineers. Every summer trekking enthusiasts make their way to Shimshal to get up into its truly iconic mountains.

One such trek is the legendary Shimshal Pass, though that’s just one of the many adventurous opportunities Hunza’s largest locale holds.

But as is common in remote regions, updated information on the interwebs is scarce. So let me be your guide! Even if you’re not up for a stay in the mountains, you should definitely venture to Shimshal. Its peace and beauty are simply unparalleled, and it feels so different from its neighboring valleys.

Whether you plan to lace up your hiking shoes or not, read on for everything you need to know about Pakistan’s magical Shimshal Valley!

Why Visit Shimshal Valley?

Shimshal is undoubtedly the most remote place in Hunza Valley .

While the majority of the region enjoys a paved highway, Shimshal is only accessible via one of the most dangerous roads in the entire world.

And trust me–that is not an overstatement!

hunza valley travel guide girl standing at a massive alpine lake in shimshal valley

But Shimshal’s remoteness is EXACTLY why you should visit–the valley is still free from the perils of mass tourism, and few “selfie tourists” make it out here.

It’s a glimpse into what the rest of Hunza was like before capitalism took over–only basic backpacker-friendly guesthouses exist here, and there’s not many things to do other than trekking.

It’s beautiful, peaceful, and overall a true escape from the world. If you can manage the terrifying jeep ride, an entire world of hidden mountains and trails will be yours to explore.

Shimshal Valley Weather – When to Visit?

Shimshal is one of the most remote places in Hunza Valley and sits at over 10,000 feet – so you can imagine it has a pretty harsh climate.

In general, summer is the best time to visit Pakistan to explore the mountains, and Shimshal is no exception.

Shimshal Valley weather is best enjoyed in May – September, though I visited in late April and enjoyed sunny and mostly warm days.

girl standing on rock with snowcapped mountain in the background

Nights, however, were just a bit too cold to be fully comfy. All I know is how thankful I am for Pamiri-style homes and stoves, that’s for sure!

Prime summer weather in Shimshal is from June – early September. This is also the best window to visit if you’re looking to do one of the many treks in the valley.

Yes, Shimshal is a trekking paradise !

How to Get to Shimshal Valley from Hunza

Perhaps one of the most important pieces of info in this Shimshal Valley guide is of course–how to reach the remote hamlet. Exploring remote areas is one of my personal reasons to travel and Shimshal checks every box.

If you have your own motorbike, be prepared for a rough (yet stunning) road, and note that 4x4s or clunky Soviet-style vans are definitely going to have an easier time getting there than a regular vehicle.

As for public transport, a jeep or two a day plys the perilous road to Shimshal Valley. Jeeps load up in Aliabad in Central Hunza and can pick up anywhere onwards until Passu, the last village on the KKH before you’ll make the turn onto the 4-5 hour long scenic route to sprawling Shimshal.

Most guesthouses/ hotels will be able to call and book a seat for you. Expect to pay 400-500 PKR for a seat, and a bit more if you want to book the front seat.

You can also TRY hitchhiking from the KKH to Shimshal, though I recommend starting early and trying to do so in peak season. A visit to Shimshal will add at least three days to your Pakistan itinerary .

Where to Stay in Shimshal Valley

I highly recommend the Shimshal Embassy Guesthouse & Camping Site. Not only does it serve some of the most genuinely fresh and delicious food I’ve ever tasted, but it’s also affordable and located nearby the starting point to many of the best things to do in Shimshal.

The owner and his family are friendly and hospitable – you’ll undoubtedly feel at home! The large yard makes a perfect place to pitch a tent, and you’ll find a heaping of cute farm animals wandering around at any given time of day.

shimshal valley home

For the large traditional room with (comfy) mattresses and pillows provided, expect to pay 800 PKR which can be split between quite a few people–the room is big. A shared bathroom is located right next door (heading outside is not needed!).

For a private room, 2000-3000 PKR is the standard which includes an attached bathroom. Keep in mind that Shimshal Valley is a remote village, so don’t expect hot or even running water all the time – as is sometimes common when backpacking Pakistan .

The folks at Shimshal Embassy were kind enough to boil us some water when the water heating device they had wasn’t working, but overall it was a trip of very quick “showers.”

Places to Visit in Shimshal Valley

Here’s a quick look at some of the best places to visit in Shimshal…

Take a Day Trip to the Yazghil Glacier

yazghil glacier in shimshal pakistan

A walk to the Yazghil Glacier is the perfect one-day trip from Shimshal that will give you a taste of its rugged beauty without the need for a guide or permit. Though if you prefer a guide, one can easily be arranged by your guesthouse.

Yazghil is about 3 hours trekking distance from the edge of the village and is one of the best things to see in Hunza. Seeing glaciers up close is always a treat in Pakistan, but to see one in such a far-out untouched setting is something else altogether.

But avoid going ON the glacier without a local guide, unless you have some notable mountaineering experience.

Explore The Village

Shimshal is a vast, sprawling village, and perhaps one of the most authentic places to travel within Hunza.

Seriously, the length of it is surprising! From remote neighborhoods to a “central” town area, spending a take just wandering around Shimshal with no aim or direction is absolutely a good idea.

yaks walking on a village road in pakistan

If you’re a yak lover like me, you can definitely expect to get your fix while in Shimshal. Thousands of them live in the high-altitude pastures above the valley yet some always seemed to be out and about around the village.

Trek the Shimshal Pass

The Shimshal Pass (also known as Pamir) is one of the best places to visit in Shimshal Valley, but not without a bit of struggle, that is.

The pass takes you through grasslands, magnificent snow-capped mountains, and of course, hundreds if not thousands of yaks. At over 4700 m above sea level (15,419 feet!), this high-altitude trek takes about 7 days (roundtrip) once you begin from Shimshal Valley.

view of pamir in shimshal pass

This trek is a photographer/videographer’s dream. You’re definitely going to want something to remember it by– getting one of the cheaper GoPro alternatives is undoubtedly the best way to do so.

I did this trek in July 2022 and it was the hardest and most rewarding hike of my life! While the trail is easy to follow and non-technical, do NOT underestimate the nearly 5000 FEET of altitude gain.

That means 7000+ feet if coming from Central Hunza!

Also–don’t forget that supporting local economies is super important, especially in remote regions like Shimshal. If you do plan to trek, make sure you hire Shimshali guides and porters–no one knows these lands better than they do!

Life and Culture in Shimshal

Shimshal is one of the best places to visit in Pakistan to see village life. Since the road to connect Shimshal with the rest of Pakistan was only created in 2003, Shimshali culture is still vibrant and its traditions enduring.

two boys skinning a goat in shimshal valley

For centuries, Shimshalis lived sustainably and to this day grow some of the most delicious and organic food in all of Pakistan!

Shimshalis are Ismaili , which is one of the most liberal sects of Islam. Women still herd animals, and you’ll have opportunities to meet them easily.

Shimshalis are friendly and peaceful people, the entire vibe of the valley is calm AF and a true breath of fresh air!

Is Shimshal Valley Safe?

Shimshal Valley is definitely in the running for one of the safest places in Pakistan , if not the world! The region exudes peace and has plenty of things for nature lovers to do.

At the time of writing (2023) foreigners do NOT need a NOC or trekking permits to explore Shimshal. You’ll pass by a police checkpoint shortly after leaving the KKH, but this is just for registration purposes.

shimshal trek

However, if you DO want to do one of the epic multi-day treks in Shimshal Valley, you’ll need a local guide .

Guides can be arranged on arrival in the valley, which in my opinion is the best way to do it. Shimshal is known for its mountaineers , and no one knows this area better than they do!

Why should you register very early?

1. Team building:  It takes time to formulate a good team. We go through all incoming applications and formulate the best team of mountaineers (on the basis of experience). Although our vet process is not very strict, our top priority is always the safety of fellow climbers. We will not accept all applications only to maximize the number of the mountaineers.

2. Logistics:  Our climbing adventures involve a lot of logistics. This includes reserving/assigning high altitude porters, guides and other staff in advance. It also involves a lot of procurement (equipment, food etc). This is not possible during the last hours. During winters expeditions, most of the supplies are transported to base camps two to three months prior to the expedition because winters in the mountains of Pakistan are very harsh and it becomes almost impossible to for porters to walk through the trail with heavy supplies.

3. Permit:  Pakistani government tourism laws require tour operators to submit applications for climbing (along with all documents e.g. passport copies, photos, CVs etc) at least  70 days prior to arrival in Pakistan.

4. Price changes:  The given prices are  early bird discount  offers and are subject to change. There can be increases in price after January. Service providers including (but not limited) to hotels  increase prices  in  peak-season.  Early reservations cost less than peak-season (May to September). Our prices will not change once you have paid the deposit so the price when you book is the price you will pay. Register yourselves early to avoid increase in holiday prices.

5. Pay less deposit: Given below is our deposit schedule for 2022 departures.

  • 8 months before departure (deposit:  35% )
  • 6 months before departure (deposit:  40% )
  • 5 months before departure (deposit:  50% )
  • 4 months before departure ( full  payment)

  • Did a summit of tiger peak whoch would not be possible without their team. Had crazy fun. Would alway go again InshaAllah.

One aspect that truly impressed me was the attention to detail. K2 Climbers thoughtfully arranged little surprises along the way, such as a surprise stop at a breathtaking viewpoint or arranging a local culinary experience that perfectly complemented the tour. These thoughtful touches made the tour even more memorable and created an immersive experience that I will cherish for a lifetime.

It was an awesome experience with k2climbers. Both Bilal and Javed bhai were amazing in managing the trip. Due to their continuous motivation, the whole group was able to successfully summit tiger peak. There was a minor hiccup at the end but it was managed perfectly by both of them. Will definitely plan another trip with them in the future.

I have experience to travel with k2 climbers for two times. I found them highly experienced , professional and dedicated. The team is so caring and equipped with the gears needed for traveling. I highly recommend to travel with k2 climbers.

The natural environment, local hospitality, grasslands, the beautiful mountain landscapes, wildlife like Marcopolo Sheep, Himalayan Ibex, and blue sheep, and organic lifestyle make this trek completely splendid. It is worth mentioning here that the Colonel Francis Young Husband crossed the Shimshal Pass to reach Shimshal from China sometimes during the famous Great Game, and it was at this place that he stumbled upon his Russian counterpart Captain Grombtchevski.

Food and Meal Plan

During the Trek, participants will be served all three meals (breakfast, lunch and dinner). The food will include combination of Pakistani and foreign meals made of ingredients bought in Pakistan. Breakfasts will include coffee, tea, cereals, eggs, porridge/muesli, chappatti/bread. During trekking, lunches will be eaten during lunch breaks with options from tinned/canned meals (fish, meat), crackers, pickles, cheese, chapatti, pate etc. Depending on the weather, the lunches start with or sometimes end with soup, coffee or tea, juices etc. Dinner is always eaten in mess tent which is freshly prepared by our cooks travelling with us. During the initial days of trekking, fresh vegetables are also cooked until they remain fresh. Vegetarians must inform our office in advance if they want their entire meals to be vegetarian.

Iodine treated drinking water will be made available in the mornings, during breaks and while camping. Everyone will be drinking spring water when available but at other times, we do not have options other than consuming glacial melt water that might consist of silt. Our kitchen uses a large container for water supply that helps in settling down the silt at the bottom. If you do not like the odor of iodine, you might want to bring your own supply of bi-carbonate of soda. Conventional methods work well for everyone but we keep on experimenting new methods.

We arrange stays at standard hotels in Islamabad and our hotel picks in Hunza/Skardu are always one of the best in town. Rooms at our selected hotels will be provided on twin-sharing basis and will have en-suite amenities. During camping days, you will also be sharing a two-person tent. If you are traveling alone, you will be teamed with one of the other participants (of the same sex) for room and tent sharing. However you can get separate hotel rooms and separate tents for additional cost but both require booking in advance. Extended hotel reservations in Islamabad are possible.

A typical Day

On all trekking days, your guide will wake you up for warm tea or coffee followed by a good breakfast inside the mess tent(s). You will have time before breakfast to pack your bags again. Camp will be closed after breakfast and porters will get to work carrying supplies and luggage ahead of guests to arrive at the lunch site and prepare meals. Porters will repeat the same “trek-earlier” approach for dinner preparations. We will generally hike for 3-4 hours before lunch. Lunch normally takes at least one hour so it is a good time to gain your strength back, read, write etc.

Trekking after lunch break in the afternoon will generally be shorter than first half of the day. Once you reach the next camp, camps will either be setup or in the process and kitchen crew would serve a hot beverage first and dinner will be served when its ready. One can rest, socialize, read, write, and photograph etc upon reaching a camp. Temperature normally decreases at night and participants can get cozy in their personal sleeping bags before getting enough sleep for the next day.

Domestic Flights

In order to reach your destination (northern areas), we will be taking a flight which is subject to weather as the valley is surround by mountains and requires high visibility for any flight to operate. Due to the weather factor, no flights are guaranteed to operate. Flights to your destination do operate often but there are always chances for cancellations and in that case we keep road transport as backup and on standby. We cannot take the risk of waiting for another day in Islamabad for another flight for good reasons including complex airline booking system, tourist traffic flow in flights etc. Please beware of other trekking companies offering Trek that might keep you waiting in Islamabad in hopes of flights and end up not completing your long-awaited trek on time.

Karakorum Highway (In case of Flight Cancellation)

We advise all our guests to read foreign travel advices on their respective country’s foreign office websites. Travel advice for EU residents from their home country to your destination country (Pakistan) can be found on the European Commission website. Participants from other countries can look up on relevant websites or search “foreign office travel advice”. Most websites advice against travelling by road in Pakistan and some websites don’t seem updated. Please take note that incase one or both internal flights cancel, we will drive on Karakoram Highway and then via Gilgit-Skardu road to Skardu. This route is available on Google maps

Journey on Karakoram Highway is one of the best experiences in Pakistan for any foreign or domestic tourist, providing views of amazing natural environment and indigenous people throughout the road trip and never has any of our guest openly regretted traveling by KKH. We strongly advise that you contact and gain more information from your travel insurance company regarding road traveling coverage. If your company does not offer full coverage for your trekking holiday, you might look for other companies. For example in UK,  British Mountaineering Council  offers good solutions.

Guide (Leader) and Group Assistance Staff

All participants will be managed by our professional guide for the whole trekking holiday. They will be licensed and recognized from Pakistan’s Ministry of Tourism. Our guide will be the focal person for communication, assistance, help and complaints during the Trek. Our guides have vast experience with foreign clients and can communicate in English. They have been trained to interact with participants in a professional manner and we will appreciate if you keep the relationship friendly and yet professional. If you are a big private group from one country speaking a different language (for example Spanish), we can try rescheduling our guides speaking your language (if available). You will also be accompanied by kitchen crew, assistant(s) depending on the group size and last but not the least, porters.

These tough local porters belong to different villages of the surrounding areas and are mostly small subsistence farmers. They wait for foreign tourists to arrive so that they can earn and compliment to their existing income while their kids look after their small farms. Naturally they are tourist-friendly people who also have fun during trekking by having laughs and dancing to local songs when they get a chance. These porters and their elders have been doing it for decades and watching the porters at work with such energy is another vital offering of this holiday.

Miscellaneous Expenses and Budgeting

For expenses other than your holiday cost, you can carry approximately 240 EUR/250 USD/200 GBP/1700 CNY (or equivalent in your own currency). This can be used for other expenses including tips for porters and supporting staff. You can purchase Pakistani Rupees (PKR) upon arrival at the airport at good rates. US Dollars, Euros and Pound Sterling can quickly be converted into the local currency at the airport.

The porters are paid in Pakistani Rupees, not to mention everything else you may want to purchase in Pakistan. US Dollars will have an advantage of being easily exchanged at even smaller towns but we recommend one-time exchange. Credit cards can come handy for shopping in Islamabad for souvenirs/gift items including rugs. Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) will be available in Islamabad and Skardu but using your debit/credit cards, you will only be able to withdraw Pakistani Rupees from ATMs.

Managing Tips

It is common that our participants at least tip the porters for their hard work carrying participant luggage and supplies. If you feel satisfied with the services of the guide, assistant(s), kitchen crew, you can contribute to the total tip. 95-120 Euros (or equivalent in your currency) would cover this element of the total expenses. The tour leader/guide helps all participants in deciding a tip for all crew members of the Trek. These tips are then handed over as a group in a “thank you” ceremony organized at the conclusion of the trek.

Baggage Allowance

Porters discussed above will be carrying your baggage/luggage apart from supplies, equipments etc. The maximum weight limit for your packed trekking bag is 12.5 kilograms (20 pounds). The load of your sleeping mattress and sleeping bag is included in the maximum limit. Please only bring required items on the trek. It will be possible for you to leave parts of your luggage at the hotel at your particular destination you chose. The maximum limit (12.5 kgs) strictly followed is assigned by the local porters organization. Your baggage allowance will not include equipments for mountaineering that you will bring along for the Trek. We will collect from you the mountaineering equipments at your destination that shall be carried separately by our porters.

All our potential guests are advised to read carefully and know the different elevations mentioned above for each trekking day. This is a strenuous trek at very high altitudes. Although this should not worry you as humans are reasonably gifted to become accustomed to high elevations, we must acclimatize according to our well-planned itinerary.

Shimshal Pass Trek

shimshal trek

For any adventure lover, the Shimshal pass trek is no less than a wonder. This trek contains extreme beauty in it. It is located in a very difficult and remote valley of Shimshal. Usually, hikers ascending any mountain go towards height. However, at Shamshal, somewhere heights and at some point, towards the slope. The whole trek is complicated.

At Shamshal pass, a rare Wolf of Pakistan can be found. The wolves exist here in abundance. Yolk is called Khush Gae in these areas. Leopards, Wolfs, and bears create a lot of trouble for the local populace.

Highest Settlement of the World

World’s highest settlement is at Shimshal pass. At an altitude of 4,500 meters. At such height, humans don’t live in any other place in Pakistan. Only tourists go to such heights to ascend the peaks. However, the people of Shimshal are such hardcore that they contain and take care of the cattle at such high altitudes. At Shujrab, several thousand goats. People take care of them in rotation. 8 to 10 days, one group takes care of goats. Another replaces this group after this period. For local people, the track is for 3 days.

At Palmier pastures, there are 1500 yolks. They graze there and are looked after for 6 months of the year.

Islamabad to Shujrab

The journey starts in Islamabad. Hunza is the first stop. From Hunza, a road turns towards Shimshal village from Passukool. The distance between Shimshal village from Hunza is almost 4 hours. On the first day, the tourists stay at Shimshal village. On the second day, they halt at a point named Pest Khurd Been. From Pest Khurd Bin a 9-hour, extremely tough hike leads the tourists to Arbab Prem. From this point, they move towards Shujrab. Mostly, at this spot, the luggage is carried by donkeys. Interestingly, the donkeys are relatively small sized in hilly areas than planes. A rule for luggage exists that nobody carries more than 20 kg of luggage. The donkeys too cannot carry more than this limit.

Shujrab to Shimshal

From Arbab Prem to Shujrab, the distance is covered in 7 to 8 hours (if the hike was good). This trek makes the trekkers wonderful time and again.

In any month of summer, snow can fall at Shimshal pass. The journey/hike up to Shimshal pass or Minglin sar from Shujrab entirely depends on the weather. Hikers may have to wait for several days if the weather doesn’t permit them to go ahead. From the local community, they can purchase a sheep or goat. They can cook it for you as well.

We do not find such diversity at any track in entire Pakistan. Other peaks or summits are with no population. Here, even at the top of Shimshal’s pass, people live. When a person thinks many times to go/hiking, the Shimshal populace builds their homes there.

Reaching Shimshal

After a 3 to 4-hour hike from Shujrab, one reaches Shimshal and Palmier Pasture. This is the biggest pasture in the area, where thousands of Yolks keep grazing. Running water stream between grassy meadows. Surrounded by snow-covered peaks. What a beautiful and wonderful pasture!

Yolk is the backbone of the Shamshal economy. This animal is grazing here. Whenever some yolks are to be sold, they are moved to Shimshal village beneath. There, the meat and skin of yolks are sold. Tents and other warm items are made of their skin hairs, which help combat the cold. Yolk is the only animal in the world, which is an herbivore and can survive at such high altitudes. No other animal has such a lung capacity to survive in this area.

Shimshal Lake

At Shimshal pass, the highest active lake in Pakistan exists. It is known as Shamshal Lake or Lupe la Lake. It is at 5,050 meters in altitude. There are 3 lakes, 2 small and 1 big. The bigger one is Lupe la Lake. It is distant from the other 2 lakes. It is almost frozen for the whole year. Only for 1 or 2 months, the upper layer is not on the surface and thus water is seen. Rush Lake is perhaps considered the highest for the reason that it freezes for a lesser duration. While Lupe La Lake remains frozen for a longer period of the year.

However, the views of the lake are awesome.

Shimshal River

From the same point, the Shimshal River started. The same Lupe la Lake feeds water.

Minglin Sar Peak

This peak is at the highest point of the Shimshal pass. Weather is a great obstacle in ascending it. Hikers and climbers have to wait for several days but in vain.

Diversity at Shimshal Pass

Lush green planes of Pamir pasture are seen here. Extremely vast wetlands exit at Shimshal pass. Snowcapped high mountains please the viewers. Such diversity at this altitude doesn’t exist anywhere in the world. Such views are not even at Deo Sai. Mountains and peaks at such close distances are not at Deo Sai, the MAGNIFICIENT. Yolks in this abundant amount do not exist anywhere in Pakistan. Here are scores of yolk herds. They looked fewer after. Other graze themselves.

Gilgit Baltistan

Gilgit-Baltistan, situated in the northernmost part of Pakistan, is a region of unparalleled natural beauty. Nestled amidst towering mountain peaks, including the world-famous K2, it boasts breathtaking valleys, glaciers, and pristine rivers that make it a haven for adventure enthusiasts. This region offers a playground for trekking, mountaineering, and a variety of outdoor activities. Beyond its awe-inspiring landscapes, Gilgit-Baltistan is home to a rich cultural heritage. Diverse ethnic groups, such as the Balti, Shina, and Burusho people, have contributed to its unique identity, which has been influenced by Tibetan, Central Asian, and Persian cultures over centuries.

However, Gilgit-Baltistan's political status is distinct within Pakistan. Governed directly by the federal government, it lacks full provincial status, leading to ongoing political and constitutional challenges. Local residents have been advocating for greater autonomy and representation to address these issues. In recent times, efforts to promote tourism have been successful, drawing in travelers from around the world who seek adventure and a glimpse of the region's remote and scenic wonders. Gilgit-Baltistan remains a hidden gem, offering a captivating blend of natural splendor and cultural diversity that continues to enchant those who venture to explore it.

The highest settlement in Hunza: Shimshal Valley

A quick guide on visiting  Shimshal Valley in Pakistan. This guide to Shimshal Valley includes info on getting there by public transport, where to stay in Shimshal Valley, and what to do in Shimshal Valley.

Want to experience a side of Pakistan the average first-timer won’t see? Sign up for one of my Pakistan tours!

Shimshal Valley is a remote valley about three hours east of Passu in Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan.

The valley is the gateway to the Shimshal Pass, a relatively popular trek with avid trekkers and mountaineers. If you’re just a casual mountain lover, don’t let that deter you. Even if you don’t want to do the Shimshal Pass trek, Shimshal Valley is a peaceful retreat, and a great place to linger for a few days. Read on to learn how to get from Hunza to Shimshal Valley.

How to get from Hunza to Shimshal Valley

Shimshal Valley can only be reached via a beautiful—if perilous—Jeep ride from the Hunza Valley.

Because of its remote setting, only one or two Jeeps make the journey each day. Jeeps start in Aliabad, the main transport hub of the Hunza Valley, but can be boarded from any place along the way up to Passu.

There is no set timing for Jeeps, and supply depends on demand. It’s highly recommended to reserve a seat a day or two in advance. Most guesthouses in the Hunza Valley can help you arrange a seat on the next Jeep. The three to four-hour Jeep ride costs 500 Rs per person , assuming there are 10 people in a Jeep. If there are fewer people, the price goes up, but you can bargain a little on the price.

The drive into the valley is gorgeous, as you follow the narrow valley on a precipitous road eventually leading to the sprawled hamlet of Shimshal.

Technically foreigners need a permit to visit Shimshal, but at the time of writing the police checkpoint let foreign travelers through as long as they promised to only visit Shimshal and its direct surroundings.

If you wish to go on a multi-day trek—for instance to the Shimshal Pass—you require a permit that can only be arranged through a tour agency. There are several agencies that can arrange this, one of them being Pamir Tours .

How to get from Hunza to Shimshal, Gilgit Baltistan, Pakistan - Valley from above - Lost With Purpose travel blog

Hello Shimshal

Where to stay in Shimshal Valley

Shimshal Valley has several guesthouses. All are basic and charge around 1,000 – 2,000 Rs per person per night. Food will cost another 200 – 300 Rs per meal.

If the cost seems steep, remember Shimshal is a remote valley. Amenities are basic, and food simple, and both are hard to make accessible in the valley.

If you want to book a place ahead of time, ask your guest house in Hunza. They will probably know someone in Shimshal who can help you.

Things to do to in Shimshal Valley

There are several multi-day treks that can be done in Shimshal. However, these require prior arrangement and, in most cases, prior permission. Contact a tour agency if you wish to do a multi-day trek in the Shimshal Valley.

There are also several day hikes in Shimshal valley. Further down the valley are several glaciers. The first glacier, Yazghil Glacier, is about three hours’ walking from Shimshal. Trekking to the glacier requires no guide and can be done by inexperienced trekkers. (Crossing the glacier is another matter.)

The walk is beautiful, and the view of the multiple peaks in the distance once reaching the glacier is a rewarding experience. To visit the other glaciers, you must cross Yazghil, something I only recommend doing with a local guide, or if you’re a trekker with ice climbing experience.

Yazghil glacier near Shimshal

Mountaineer or not, Shimshal offers a great off the beaten track experience. There are no cars, few motorbikes, and the only background noises come from cattle and the nearby Shimshal river. It’s a great place to unwind with a book and a cup of local green tea—maybe I’ll see you there.
