Metallica Launches 2024 Tour: Photos, Video and Set List
Metallica kicked off their 2024 tour with an emphatic performance in Munich, Germany on May 24.
The concert officially launched the latest leg of Metallica’s M72 World tour. The trek, which began in April 2023, sees the metal giants playing two nights at each stop, with completely different set lists from one performance to the next.
In Munich, Metallica came out of the gates firing with “Whiplash,” the powerful lead single from their 1983 debut album Kill ‘em All (see a clip of the opening song in the tweet below). The band followed with one of their best-loved tunes, “For Whom the Bell Tolls,” before delivering a rarity, “Of Wolf and Man.” The latter song, released on Metallica’s eponymous 1991 LP (known as the Black Album), hadn’t previously been performed during the M72 tour and was last played in 2021.

Other set highlights included classic tracks like “The Memory Remains,” Fade to Black," “Nothing Else Matters” and "Master of Puppets." The Munich gig also featured the live debut of “Room of Mirrors,” an album cut from Metallica’s 2023 album 72 Seasons .

Olympic stadium.
For decades, they have been among the international top stars, among the most successful bands in the music scene. Their albums have reached the top of the charts in Germany since 1991, their songs like "Nothing Else Matters" or "Enter Sandman" wrote music history. Now Metallica is coming back to the Olympic Stadium. For an open air double feature, with two concerts on 24 and 26 May 2024.
Almost 40 years ago, James Hetfield, Lars Ulrich and their comrades-in-arms gave their first concert in Germany, back then in the small Hemmerleinhalle in Neunkirchen, Upper Franconia. In 1986 they played for the first time in Munich at the Circus Krone, one year later at the Congress Hall of the German Museum. In 1992 they celebrated their debut in the Olympic Hall, then in 2004 in the Olympic Stadium. Most recently they rocked the park at their Open Air 2019, now the world stars of metal are coming back to the Olympic Stadium for a double concert - with old classics as well as songs from their new album "72 Seasons", the first studio album since 2016.
According to Hetfield, the 72 seasons refer to "the first 18 years of our lives, when our true or false self-image is formed. The concept that we were told by our parents of 'who we are'." A portion of the proceeds from the concerts will go to the band's All Within My Hands Foundation (AWMH). Founded in 2017, AWMH has raised nearly $13 million to date - $5.9 million for career and technical education programmes in the US, more than $2.5 million to address food insecurity and more than $3.2 million for disaster relief efforts worldwide.

Watch: METALLICA Battles Heavy Rain At Opening Concert Of 2024 Leg Of 'M72' Tour
METALLICA kicked off the 2024 leg of its "M72" tour Friday night (May 24) at Olympiastadion in Munich, Germany.
In support of METALLICA 's latest album, "72 Seasons" , the band has been playing two-night, no-repeat shows in each city— first in Europe , then in North America and now back in Europe — as part of the "M72" tour. Each concert sees METALLICA performing on a massive ring-shaped stage, with the Snake Pit in the center, and four drum sets which are equally spaced out around the circular stage so drummer Lars Ulrich can get closer to the audience at various points in the show.
In Munich, METALLICA opened the show with "Whiplash " and continued with "For Whom the Bell Tolls" and "Of Wolf And Man" . The band also performed classic tracks like "The Memory Remains" , "Fade To Black" , "Nothing Else Matters" and "Master Of Puppets" , as well as three songs from "72 Seasons" : "Lux Æterna" , "Too Far Gone?" and "Shadows Follow" .
The setlist was as follows:
01. Whiplash 02. For Whom The Bell Tolls 03. Of Wolf And Man 04. The Memory Remains 05. Lux Æterna 06. Too Far Gone? 07. Fade To Black 08. Shadows Follow 09. Orion 10. Nothing Else Matters 11. Sad But True 12. The Day That Never Comes 13. Hardwired 14. Fuel 15. Seek & Destroy 16. Master Of Puppets
METALLICA frontman James Hetfield spoke about his mindset going into the 2024 leg of "M72" , telling "The Metallica Report" : "What I'm going into is unknown. I know how big the stage is. I know we have breaks here and there. I know what we're walking into. When we first started with this, with the 'M72' stage, in the round in the stadium, from between setting up cones, walking around thinking, 'Oh, this is how big the stage is gonna be.' 'Oh, this is cool.' 'This'll be great.' 'This is too skinny,' and this and that. And then, between that time and then actually seeing it built, where it's kind of too late, 'Oh shit, this thing is so big.' The anxiety level was off the charts at the beginning of the 'M72' tour. Like, how are we gonna cover this stage? And, of course, my ego saying, 'Well, the other guys don't have to sing. They don't have to run over there. They don't have to do all this. And no one knows the woes I have and all the worries.' But as soon as I share them with the other guys, they're, like, 'Yeah, but I got this and I got this.' It's like, 'Oh, okay. Okay. I want mine back. That's okay.' So it's a known. We know what we're up against and we know what shape we need to be in. And it's just fun. Now it's just fun. We broke that stage in. It's well trodden on and it's worked fantastically. And so we just get to step back into it and do what we do best."
Asked if there have been any modifications to the "M72" stage at all since the 2023 shows, Hetfield said: "There have been a few things here and there that have changed — extra microphones, whatever monitors that we need. And that's typical on any stage, though. The lighting tends to show things that you don't see before: 'Yeah, we need to drape that off' or whatever it may be, just things to make it better. Just like anything we do, you wanna improve on it. So that that was the first couple months of the first touring with the 'M72' stage."
Regarding how he prepares for a METALLICA tour, especially when it comes to performing around 32 songs at each stop on the ongoing "M72" trek, Hetfield said: "Obviously, before heading out on tour, sitting there, trying to remember the myriad of pretty awesome songs we have, and then just trusting that once we get together, it's, like, 'Oh, yeah.' It's muscle memory. But, yeah, over the last month, I will say that the normal thing happens where I start to doubt myself. I start to feel insecure that, 'Whoa, we're old. We can't do this,' and blah, blah, blah, all that bullshit that everyone tells themselves before they go into something that they care about and is important. So having the nightmares of, 'I'm the only one who cares about what we're doing here. Where is everybody?' I show up at the gig. Everyone's goofing off or there's 200 people backstage. And where's my stuff? Where's the setlist? What songs are we doing? And then typical things like the guitar neck is made of rubber, and there's only two strings on it. And where's my roadie? And the guitar cord won't let me get to the microphone. You know, silly stuff like that that has to happen, and I don't freak out over it. All you do is you practice and that comes back pretty quickly."
After Munich, METALLICA will continue touring throughout Europe for the first part of summer, with stops in Italy, Spain, Denmark, Norway, France and Poland, among others. Another round of North American dates will begin on August 2 in Foxborough, Massachusetts, with stops in Chicago, Minneapolis, Seattle and Edmonton. METALLICA will close out the 2024 touring season with four shows in Mexico City at the end of September.
According to Billboard , METALLICA 's production travels in 87 trucks — 45 for the band and its setup, plus two groups of 21 each for the steel stage and towers. There are 130 people in the band's crew, plus 40 steelworkers, local hires and truck drivers.
METALLICA 's manager Cliff Burnstein told Billboard that between 80% and 90% of fans at each concert attend both shows.
The "M72" tour launched in late April 2023 in Amsterdam.
Opening acts include FIVE FINGER DEATH PUNCH , ICE NINE KILLS , MAMMOTH WVH , PANTERA , ARCHITECTS , GRETA VAN FLEET and VOLBEAT .
A portion of proceeds from the shows go to METALLICA 's All Within My Hands foundation, which seeks to assist and enrich the lives of members of the communities who have supported the band and combat food insecurity; provides disaster relief; and bestows scholarships.

Lightning strikes during Metallica concert in Munich
Lighting provided an extraordinary backdrop for a Metallica concert in Munich on Friday, 24 May.
The US heavy metal band were performing at the German city’s Olympiastadion as part of their M72 world tour.
Footage posted on X/Twitter by @SunsetGirlJane captured the moment lightning struck as the band began playing “Master of Puppets” from the 1986 album of the same name.
“A thunderstorm happened and it made for the coolest f***ing intro of all time,” the X/Twitter user said.

If you're looking for help on where to buy Metallica tickets for their ongoing M72 World Tour, we have you covered. The heavy metal legends are back on tour for the first time since 2019, and concert tickets are still available to purchase for those who want to catch the performances of the second and third legs of the acclaimed tour.
Longtime band members James Hetfield (lead vocals, guitar), Lars Ulrich (drums), Kirk Hammett (lead guitar), and Robert Trujillo (bass guitar) are all returning for the nearly two-year-long tour, which is in support of Metallica's 11th studio album. While the M72 tour is focused on celebrating their 2023 album 72 Seasons, the tour's playlist includes various songs from Metallica's entire discography. Some classic tracks that have made their way onto the setlists in 2023 include "Fade to Black," "Enter Sandman," and "Master of Puppets."

Where to buy Metallica tickets
You can buy original tickets to Metallica's 2023-2024 concert tour through Ticketmaster, though the available quantity is limited. Additionally, standard original tickets on Ticketmaster are typically more expensive than those available through verified resale platforms such as StubHub and Vivid Seats .
The prices for standard tickets at Metallica's M72 World Tour range from about $20 on the lower end to $480 for the final date of the year in December in Inglewood.
How much are Metallica tickets?
The cost of an original concert ticket to Metallica's remaining dates has dropped significantly for the reamining dates in the US, with prices starting at $16, and going up to around $60 for the cheapest dates. Prices for Mexico City dates are higher, starting around $60-$180. While some are still available through Ticketmaster, the price of a ticket varies by date and location.
Various VIP packages for Metallica's tour come at a higher price, including the "Nothing Else Matters" Snake Pit Experience, "Moth Into Flame" Snake Pit Experience, "One" Enhanced Experience, "Seek & Destroy" Reserved Package, and "Frantic" Early Entry GA Package. An example of one of the cheapest VIP packages begins at $349 for the "Frantic" package and $399 for the "Seek & Destroy" package on September 1 in Seattle, Washington.
Original prices typically come in higher than resale prices for Metallica concerts. Many of the cheaper tickets are verified resales or originals to nearer tour dates, so you might find the best prices when it gets closer to the concert date.

Fun fact of the day: Metallica use or give away 6,000 guitar picks a night
The metal superstars also haul 64 guitars around on tour and make their way through 25 drumsticks per show
A recent news report has revealed the astonishing numbers behind Metallica ’s ongoing M72 world tour.
US news station WCCO–CBS went backstage before the metal juggernauts’ two concerts in Minneapolis, Minnesota, on August 16 and 18. They interviewed tour coordinator Jon-Michael Marino and published some impressive stats about the team that put together the Minneapolis gigs, which was reportedly more than 400-strong. It included 156 of Metallica’s own crew, 40 steelworkers, 148 local production staff and 92 truck drivers.
Metallica used eight video towers for the Minneapolis shows, which, according to Marino, took 36 hours each to build. The stage itself and the audio-visual production took another 12 hours to put together.
Marino also revealed that Metallica take 64 guitars on tour with them, 36 of which need to be ready at all times during live performances. This is so the band can quickly play songs in different tunings, but also in case of technical problems like a string breaking.
In addition, Blabbermouth reports that Metallica get through 6,000 guitar picks at every concert. While some of these are used by guitar players James Hetfield (also vocals) and Kirk Hammett, the vast majority are thrown out into the audience at the end of the night. Meanwhile, drummer Lars Ulrich makes his way through an average of 25 sticks per show.
Metallica play the last two US dates of the 2024 M72 tour this weekend, taking the stage at Lumen Field in Seattle on August 30 and September 1. They’ll then host a four-show residency at Foro Sol, Mexico City, from September 20 to 29. See the full details below. The band haven’t announced any further concerts at time of publication.
Metallica guitarist Kirk Hammett and bassist Robert Trujillo recently jammed a cover of Rush’s Working Man at an M72 stop in Edmonton, Canada. This month, the band donated $40,000 to Minnesota charity People Serving People, which aids individuals and families experiencing homelessness.

Metallica are currently touring with 64 guitars – and 36 need to be ready to go at any given moment
When you buy through links on our articles, Future and its syndication partners may earn a commission.
If you need a new excuse to buy more guitars, try this: Metallica’s M72 world tour includes an arsenal of 64 electric guitars , 32 of which need to be riff-ready at any given moment.
WCCO-TV ’s Jeff Wagner was given a peak behind the scenes as the tour rolled into Minnesota, and the logistics are enormous. The touring crew consists of 156 personnel, which includes 40 steelworkers, with an additional 168 local production hands and 92 truck drivers. 800 locals are also employed to support each specific date.
But the number of six-strings that are brought along for the ride is what really catches the eye. That figure of 64 is split between guitar and bass , with the 36 gig-ready axes equating to 12 instruments per member.
Justifying that inflated figure, tour coordinator Jon-Michael Marino told WCCO-TV : “Across, let's call it 15-16 songs, there's various tunings. There's also things that happen naturally like strings breaking, guitars going out of tune that have to be swapped in the moment.”
Metallica’s current run has found the metal titans stop at each destination city for two nights, and perform two independent sets with no repetition. That’s a grueling run for the musicians and instruments alike, and so a suitably vast army of guitars has been assembled to roll with the punches of such heavy touring.
Adding to that array of guitars – which is likely to include Kirk Hammet’s latest signature guitar , the ESP LTD KH-V , and his iconic Greeny Les Paul – are 6,000 guitar picks , used or given away to the crowd each show, and 25 drumsticks that succumb to the same fate. Per night.
Therefore, across Metallica's five September dates, roughly 30,000 picks will be needed – roughly the same amount this writer probably has down the back of his couch.
To be fair, the construction of the eight towers, wrapped in LED screens, amounts to 36 hours of labor. They each weigh over 14 tons and are nearly 100ft tall. It would seem wrong, then, to tour with just a handful of instruments.
Kirk Hammett raised eyebrows late last year when he proclaimed that, no matter how impressive a player's solos are, they're going to be forgotten by most listener s: “I hate to say it, but non-musicians – who are the majority of the listening world – are not going to remember guitar solos ,” he told Total Guitar .
