Review: World Navigator

cruise cabin

What is the line?  Atlas Ocean Voyages

Name of ship?   World Navigator

Passenger occupancy?  196 (but there were only 70 aboard on this sailing)

Itinerary?  Eight-night sailing Longyearbyen round-trip, circumnavigating Norway's Svalbard archipelago.

Seeking an adventure on the farthest reaches of earth but without forgoing any of the finer touches of life? Atlas is the ultimate luxury expedition trip, designed for travelers looking to wade knee-deep through riverbeds while hiking to remote Arctic glaciers before ending the night in high-design comfort with plenty of caviar on hand.

Start out with the big picture—what is this cruise line known for?

While Atlas is a relatively new brand—this sailing was during the first anniversary of its maiden voyage—it distinguishes itself as a luxury expedition brand, with an ace expedition team guiding a busy schedule of twice-daily zodiac excursions and plenty of cosseting comforts to welcome you back aboard. It's also one of the most eco-friendly ships on the seas, so it attracts a conscious traveler in pursuit of adventure in hard-to-reach places.

Tell us about the ship in general

World Navigator was launched in August 2021, and can hold 196 passengers across 98 staterooms and suites. Because it’s so new, it’s built to the latest standards with state-of-the-art technology that makes it one of the most eco-friendly ships on the seas. Atlas worked with Rolls-Royce to develop hybrid engines that don’t rely on the use of heavy fuels and anchorless positioning that doesn’t harm marine life.

Who is onboard?

During the very first briefing, the expedition leader asked how many of us have been to Antarctica. Nearly everyone raised their hands. That says a lot about the travelers here: adventurous travelers who venture far off the beaten path, many of whom tend to skew older—there are lots of well-traveled retirees—or are bringing multiple generations of their family along.

Describe the cabins

I was in a 300-square-foot Veranda deluxe stateroom, a spacious room with a balcony with outdoor seating. There was plenty of space and storage for two people as well as a small sitting area, a desk with mini bar, and TV. The bathroom was snug but nicely appointed with L'Occitane products, and the multi-jet shower was a dream after a tiring excursion. Other categories range from Solo rooms to Horizon rooms with floor-to-ceiling windows to the top-category Navigator Suites, spread across 465 square feet complete with standalone bathtubs; while my room was beautifully designed and comfortable, I'd say any of the suites, with an extra sitting room, larger closets with dressing areas, and double-length decks, would be the ones to book.

Tell us about the crew

Atlas has put together an impressive expedition team—PHDs, polar meteorologists, and lifelong adventure guides with hundreds of Arctic and Antarctic expeditions among them. In their capable hands, the excursions through choppy weather and to remote stretches of coastline were seamless and fascinating, and time and time again other guests agreed that this expedition team was a highlight that sets them apart from others. But the rest of the crew was also wonderful; warm, friendly, and remembering your preferences before you’ve even had a chance to form them.

What food and drink options are available on board?

It’s a small ship, so food and drink options are limited: Paula's café has grab and go sandwiches, pastries, smoothies, and coffee; the Dome observation lounge serves drinks all day and an afternoon tea; there's a pool bar that was closed the whole time we were at sea (though the self service ice cream cart was parked and available there all day); the Atlas lounge has a bar and serves happy hour treats; and there's a room service menu with staples like club sandwiches, burgers, Caesar wraps, and osetra caviar. But most meals take place at the Porto restaurant, which serves breakfast and lunch buffets and a different themed dinner every night—Japanese, Italian, French, Indian, Ukrainian—along with a classic menu with steak, chicken, fish options. While there were some standout dishes, overall the food, while plentiful, was not out of this world—solid and bountiful but not mindblowing.

Is there a spa on board and is it worth visiting?

The L’Occitane SeaSpa, the French brand’s first-ever spa at sea, has two treatment rooms, a relaxation lounge, and an infrared sauna. My aromatherapy spa treatment was lovely; while I thought the room temperature was too cold, the heated massage bed was a nice touch.

Activities and entertainment

The swimming pool and hot tubs were mostly bypassed given the freezing temperatures, but most guests did get a thrill out of the polar plunge on the third day of the sailing. The twice daily zodiac excursions keep us plenty busy, followed by talks by guest lecturer Dr. Ed Sobey, a polar oceanographer, on what we'd been seeing as well as other issues relating to Arctic wildlife, exploration, and climate change. There was also a daily briefing on the next day's excursions. If we were able to find downtime in between all of that, there was the spa, the gym, and an outdoor running track (though it was usually too slippery to attempt whenever I went to investigate), plenty of books and board games in the Atlas Lounge, as well as nightly entertainment by two on-board entertainers, a violinist and a piano player. One night cruise director Michael Shapiro, who has a musical theater background, performed a New York-style cabaret. But ultimately the entertainment is not the point here—whiling away the 24 hours of daylight in any of the decks—which, given the intimacy of the ship, you can often expect to have to yourself—or the seventh floor Dome observatory with wraparound views of the glaciers and fjords is the best way to spend time between outings.

How was the experience for families?

We had a 10 year old and two teens on our sailing and there wasn't much geared toward them specifically apart from board games as far as I could see. Internet doesn't work at this latitude so we were offline for the entire duration, so if you're bringing kids, be sure to bring books and download plenty of entertainment for them beforehand.

Where did it sail and how were the excursions? Did anything stand out?

We set sail on an eight-night sailing through the fjords of Norway’s remote Svalbard archipelago in July, which is peak summer in the region—24 hours of sun and balmy weather in the 40s. We flew an Atlas charter flight from Oslo to Longyearbyen, before setting sail on a very unique itinerary—most cruise lines don't attempt this route, as it takes several months of summer before the ice has melted enough to allow for passage all the way around Svalbard. This is not the kind of route that would be easy to chart out in any way other than a ship like  World Navigator , and they make it seem effortless despite the challenges of exploring such a remote region—because of the positioning of satellites, phone and internet signals fade away before you reach the 80th parallel, so the entire trip took place without any contact with the rest of the world. The first port was the research settlement of Ny-Aselund, where we explored a small town and shopped at a gift shop—this the last time we encountered established communities in the entire trip. The rest of the itinerary was filled with zodiac excursions, some to moonlike landscapes where we hiked and explored remnants of historic settlements (Ny-London had well-preserved wooden cottages from an abandoned English marble mining town; on Kinnvika, we met three Swedes who were there in complete isolation for a week to restore buildings from an old Swedish polar research center) as well as sailing tours of glaciers and remote beaches to spot walruses, reindeer, arctic foxes, and a variety of arctic birds. We also glimpsed seven polar bears from the ship on our final days. Everything felt so remote, desolate, and beautiful in an otherworldly way, and it was amazing to explore this region of extremes with a skilled expedition team and retreat to creature comforts afterwards.

Are there any stand out sustainability or green initiatives about this cruise?

The standout is the ship itself, with its cutting-edge design aimed to have a minimal ecological footprint—all the more important in remote ecosystems like this one. Atlas also got guests to participate in cleanup initiatives across Svalbard, and we collected discarded fishing nets and plastic and trash that washed ashore on all of our excursions—expedition leaders bagged them all and took them to get recycled in Longyearbyen at the end of our cruise.

Anything we missed

There's a certain kind of traveler that's drawn to these kinds of experiences in these kinds of locations, and I loved getting to know my fellow cruisers—ranging from professors and archaeologists to retired spies. The intimate size of the sailing led to much camaraderie and intimacy, and direct access to the knowledge and expertise of the expedition guides as well as on-board experts like Dr. Sobey.

Why is the cruise worth booking?

It’s hard to wrap our heads around the impact of climate change on the polar regions unless you see it for yourself—seeing the majesty of the Arctic first-hand, with expert guidance to understand how fragile the region is and aboard a ship that’s at the vanguard of sustainability-minded cruising—really helps bring perspective back home.

World Navigator

Set sail on a World Navigator cruise and discover remote destinations in unparalleled small-ship luxury.

In service for Atlas Ocean Voyages since 2019, World Navigator is a 196-guest vessel offering both classic cruise experiences and off-the-beaten path adventures to a curated collection of destinations worldwide. Like the vessel’s sister ships, World Traveller and World Voyager, World Navigator embodies Atlas’ take on casual luxury, so you can expect to enjoy incredible service, mouthwatering cuisine and elegantly appointed accommodations.

One of the main advantages of choosing a voyage aboard World Navigator is the ship’s versatility. Thanks to its polar-class rating and expedition-ready apparatus, the vessel is equally at home in warm and cold water climates. From once-in-a-lifetime voyages in Antarctica to blissful Mediterranean sojourns, World Navigator is the ideal choice if you’re looking for a small-ship cruise holiday that puts a focus on in-depth destination discovery without sacrificing onboard luxury.

World Navigator Ship Accommodation

There are nine accommodation categories on World Navigator, all of which benefit from ocean views via a large panoramic window or a private balcony. Regardless of your suite or stateroom, your accommodation will feature everything you need for a truly unforgettable cruise holiday.

Regardless of category, all staterooms and suites have a sitting area with a desk, a flatscreen television, and a private marble bathroom with L’Occitane amenities. There’s ample room for storage and a spacious wardrobe. For your convenience, the accommodations also benefit from a mini-bar, complimentary robe and slippers, and 24-hour room service.

The Oceanview categories have larger picture windows, while the larger staterooms feature private balconies. The Horizon Deluxe Stateroom is slightly different, with ocean views provided by floor-to-ceiling windows and a top-drop Juliette balcony. All suite categories boast a master bedroom, additional television, a sofa, a vanity area and an oversized balcony.

World Navigator Dining & Restaurants

Cruising with Atlas Ocean Voyages isn’t just about your journeys to incredible places. It’s also about discovering tantalising flavours that transcend the boundaries of land and sea. On a World Navigator cruise, you’ll have the opportunity to enjoy a series of dining adventures that easily rival the best land-based restaurants. And here’s the best part: Your cruise fare includes all the extraordinary dining experiences.

Porto is the main dining venue on World Navigator and is open during all mealtimes. Breakfast and lunch are buffet-style, with cooking stations serving hot items like roast beef and dishes such as pasta or curry. Served course-by-course, you can choose from chef’s specialities, regionally-influenced dishes and a selection of international favourites.

Alma al Fresco

Alma al Fresco is a complimentary dining venue specialising in traditional Portuguese cuisine. Here, you can enjoy glorious views and fresh sea breezes while enjoying some of Portugal’s most famous culinary creations. (Alma al Fresco is only available on European Epicurean Expeditions).

7-Aft Grill

By day, the 7-Aft Gill serves casual poolside lunches and snacks. When the sun sets, guests on an Epicurean Expedition can savour the tastes of grilled meats and fish prepared on the ship’s Josper Grill.

The Dome Observation Lounge

The Dome Observation Lounge is open throughout the day and hosts World Navigator’s afternoon tea service.

Paula’s Pantry

Paula’s Pantry is Atlas Ocean Voyages’ take on the classic European streetside cafe. Swing by in the morning or afternoon and pick up barista-prepared coffees, pastries and fresh sandwiches.

24-hour room service from the ‘Always Available’ menu is available throughout your voyage.

Facilities, Entertainment and Activities

During the day, many guests will disembark to take advantage of Atlas Ocean Voyages’ complimentary shore excursion programme. However, those who choose to stay onboard will find the World Navigator offers a few ways for you to spend your time. On deck 7, you’ll find a small swimming pool, a whirlpool hot tub, sun loungers, a jogging track, and the Aft-7 poolside bar.

If you’re at sea for a day or enjoying a spot of scenic cruising, then The Dome Observation Lounge provides incredible 270-degree views. With comfortable seating and bar service, it is ideal for sitting back and relaxing or getting stuck into a good book.

For a spot of pampering or soothing treatment, Atlas Ocean Voyages has partnered with L’Occitane for the stunning SeaSpa. Located on deck 4, the near-1,000 square-foot spa features an infrared sauna, a pool, hot tubs and a deck solarium. Deck 4 is also where you’ll find the well-equipped fitness studio.

Much of the day on an expedition itinerary revolves around disembarking the ship and exploring, either through sightseeing trips aboard a Zodiac or by going ashore for a hike or tour. Daily briefings from the expedition team and lectures by experts in history, geography, and wildlife enhance every aspect of your journey, ensuring that you make the most out of the destination you are exploring.

In the evening, the lounges are a popular choice with guests looking for a pre-dinner cocktail, with the Atlas Lounge a great option thanks to its stunning decor and large picture windows. After dinner, the Don Henrique Auditorium hosts occasional guest entertainment performances. Likewise, The Dome Observation Lounge provides a laid-back atmosphere, perfect for a nightcap or to discuss the day’s adventures with fellow travellers.

Other facilities on World Navigator include:

  • Small sundeck
  • Water’s Edge observation deck

First look: World Navigator, the stylish new adventure cruise ship from new line Atlas Ocean Voyages

Gene Sloan

Editor's Note

It's a big month for fans of cruising, and not just because some of the world's most popular cruise vessels finally are back in operation after a 17-month shutdown.

This month also has brought the debut of an entirely new cruise line , Atlas Ocean Voyages.

Based in Fort Lauderdale, the new "luxe adventure" brand is promising upscale, adventurous sailings on small but well-appointed expedition vessels -- the sort of vessels that carry their own landing craft for exploring in remote, off-the-beaten-path places.

Created by a company that's already big in river cruising and operates ocean ships for other brands, it's a line that will focus heavily on voyages to the ultimate playgrounds for small expedition ships, Antarctica and the Arctic. It'll also offer a sprinkling of trips to South America, the Norwegian Fjords, Iceland, Greenland, the Baltic and the Mediterranean, too.

For now, Atlas only is operating a single ship, the 196-passenger World Navigator. But it plans to quickly ramp up in size with the addition of four more sister vessels to World Navigator over the next three years.

TPG is one of just a handful of travel sites getting exclusive access this week to the ship's inaugural voyage -- a nine-night trip from Piraeus, Greece , to Alexandria, Egypt.

world navigator cruise ship booking

As I'm seeing this week, World Navigator is an intimate and stylish ship that's well built for adventure. Atlas is positioning itself as a luxury brand, and it's definitely a vessel that can play in that space, although for now the service level on board isn't quite at the luxury level (something I suspect will change in the coming months as the crew begins to get in a groove).

Here's a first look at World Navigator's overall structure, interiors and onboard atmosphere:

It's a small ship -- in a good way

World Navigator isn't a tiny vessel. Including exterior areas at the top of the ship, it has six decks open to passengers.

But it's designed to hold far fewer people -- as noted above, just 196, not including crew -- than is typical for a cruise ship, even in the luxury space.

Even 196 is a bit of an overstatement, as the line will be using some passenger cabins on every voyage to house entertainers and expedition guides. As a result, executives tell me the ship is unlikely to ever sail with more than 184 passengers. On some itineraries, the maximum passenger count will be even lower.

world navigator cruise ship booking

Only a handful of upscale cruise lines, most notably France-based Ponant and Windstar Cruises , focus on vessels with so few passengers.

Such a low passenger count gives World Navigator an intimacy that is its own type of luxury. This is a ship on which you'll never feel like you're cruising with a lot of people.

It's a stylish ship

You won't find the soaring spaces or diverse array of restaurants and lounges on World Navigator that you'll find on some bigger luxury ships that have debuted in recent years, such as Regent Seven Seas Cruises' 1-year-old Seven Seas Splendor.

But for a ship this size, it offers a generous array of public spaces created with a designer's eye for harmony and detail.

World Navigator has a striking, retro-chic interior decor dominated by glossy mahogany walls set off by white-and-black marble flooring and contemporary furniture. Designed by Portuguese design firm Oitoemponto, it's sort of a 1940s-meets-modern-times interpretation of glamor.

world navigator cruise ship booking

Most of the public venues are on a single deck (Deck 4) with a flow so seamless you hardly notice you're transitioning from space to space. From front to back, this deck is home to a small theater for lectures; a main lounge with a bar that serves as the ship's central gathering point; a lobby area; a casual café offering espresso drinks, pastries and some heartier snacks; and an upscale restaurant serving regionally influenced gourmet fare.

Hidden away in a corner, there's also a small but inviting L'Occitane spa with two treatment rooms, a relaxing lounge area and a sauna.

Related: Everything you want to know about World Navigator cabins, suites

In addition, World Navigator features a relatively large deck-top pool area — something you don't always find on a ship carrying fewer than 200 passengers. It's home to a pool, two hot tubs, rows of lounge chairs and a pool grill and bar.

It's built for adventure

As noted above, World Navigator is an expedition ship. That is, it's built extra tough to go to some of the most faraway parts of the world.

As is typical for ships of this type, it has a polar-class rating that'll allow it to travel deep into the polar regions in addition to warm-water locales, and it carries Zodiac boats for exploring. It also sails with a floating adventure dock that can be used to launch Jet Skis, kayaks and paddleboards that are kept on board. There's a mudroom with cubbies where passengers can keep their parkas and boots during polar adventures.

world navigator cruise ship booking

But perhaps most importantly for a ship meant for adventures in scenic and wildlife-filled places, this is a ship loaded with indoor and outdoor observation areas.

Among the most notable of these is a perfectly positioned observation lounge. Located at the very front of the ship, on the highest deck, the Dome, as it's called, features a curving wall of floor-to-ceiling windows that offers stunning views in three directions at once (as well as a view straight up through a glass dome that tops the space -- hence its name).

world navigator cruise ship booking

Better yet, doors on each side of the Dome observation lounge lead to outdoor viewing areas that also wrap around three sides of the ship.

World Navigator also offers a close-to-the-waterline outdoor observation area at its very tip that will offer equally stunning views during expeditions in scenery-rich places such as Antarctica and the Arctic. Called The Water's Edge, it boasts a long, curving bench that's heated from within to take the chill off during adventures in such cold-weather locales.

world navigator cruise ship booking

Plus there are two more outdoor observation areas at the back of Decks 5 and 6 -- the two main cabin decks. This allows passengers in cabins a quick place to run outside for a view when the captain announces that wildlife has been spotted.

This abundance of observation areas may seem like a small thing, but for a vessel designed to spend half its year in polar regions, where glimpsing scenery and wildlife is at the heart of the experience, it really is one of the most important things. Unfortunately, not every expedition ship built for such adventures recently has been designed with so much viewing space.

It's not stuffy

Atlas may be positioning itself as a luxury brand, but its founding president, Alberto Aliberti (who is on this sailing), is adamant it not be a stuffy sort of luxury.

He's purposely set the dress code to be casual -- a polo shirt with slacks for men at dinner is just fine (no jacket required). And he's eager to keep the dining and cabin service experience unfussy.

As I'm seeing first-hand, World Navigator isn't a ship that revolves around long, formal meals in palace-like dining rooms where armies of tuxedo-clad waiters hover behind you as if in a scene from "Downton Abbey." Your room steward won't show up in a tailcoat and white gloves with four different brands of luxury soaps from which to choose.

"The feeling we're looking at is kind of like a country club after a round of golf, when everyone is still in their shorts, they're relaxed [and] they're having some drinks at the bar," Aliberti said during a reception for travel agents who are on board to test the product.

world navigator cruise ship booking

Aliberti, notably, arrived at the start-of-the-cruise agent event in a casual shirt, setting the tone. I wore a jacket to the reception and felt over-dressed. It's that kind of cruise vessel.

A veteran of both Seabourn and Silversea Cruises -- two of the world's most elegant luxury lines -- Aliberti was careful not to criticize his old employers. But he makes clear that Atlas is hoping to slide into what he feels is an untapped niche of upscale cruising that is less traditional and more active than what those lines offer (while also being a bit of an upgrade in luxury from what small-ship specialists Ponant and Windstar offer on similarly sized vessels).

It's (mostly) all-inclusive

The initial itineraries Atlas is operating aren't inexpensive. Nine-night Greek islands voyages such as the one I'm on start at $5,799 per person. The line's core expedition sailings to the polar regions are even more. Nine-night Antarctica trips start at $10,599 per person.

But as is typical for cruise lines at the high end, Atlas is including a lot in its base price. In addition to a room on board and all meals, the fares include round-trip airfare from select U.S. and Canadian gateways; drinks, including spirits and wines; shipboard Wi-Fi; prepaid gratuities; and (perhaps most notably) shore excursions in every port.

In addition, Atlas will offer one very unusual inclusion as part of what it's calling All-Inclusive All the Way pricing: Emergency medical evacuation insurance for every passenger.

world navigator cruise ship booking

Still, the inclusions aren't quite as extensive as is found on some luxury lines. The "drinks included" promise comes with some caveats, for instance. Most notably, the drinks menu found at all of the ship's bars features just one to three mid-level brands of each major type of liquor that is included in the fare, with pricier liquors coming with an extra charge.

There is just one included bourbon whiskey, for instance, Knob Creek, and two included vodkas (Ketel One and Absolut Vodka Citroen). You'll pay $6.50 or $7.20 extra, respectively, for a pour of Tito's or Grey Goose vodka.

In addition, at World Navigator's main restaurant, there is just a single "red" and "white" on offer on a complimentary basis, and on our sailing, the selection hasn't changed from one night to the next.

My take on the included drinks menu is that it offers a nice mix of options and is appropriate for a line at Atlas' price point. But some luxury cruisers who are used to the more extensive included drinks menu of, say, a Crystal Cruises vessel, may grumble.

The included Wi-Fi, for now, also comes with a caveat, as passengers only get a very limited 150 megabytes of data usage for free and then must pay extra for more. The line had intended to offer unlimited Wi-Fi with no data limit on sailings -- and still does intend for this to be the way it operates. But it's struggling with the fallout from a wiring mistake during the building of the vessel that's forcing it to ration bandwidth for now. Executives hope to have this fixed soon, but it's already causing frustration with passengers.

A few passengers on this early sailing also have complained about a lack of a self-serve laundry on board. The line says it's something that will be added for future ships in the series.

It's still working out the kinks

Launching a new cruise ship is never easy, and starting up an entirely new line is even more difficult -- particularly in the midst of a pandemic. Just getting crew from around the world to World Navigator in advance of its debut was a challenge, given the ongoing travel restrictions, and some crew arrived later than hoped for pre-launch training, Atlas executives have said.

The result is that World Navigator's crew still is getting its sea legs, so to speak, when it comes to delivering service at a "luxe" level, to use Atlas' word.

Among little things, water and wine glasses aren't always being swiftly refilled at dinner tables (although this seems to be improving by the day), and the service is halting at times. The delightfulness of food items can be hit-or-miss. It's not yet the sort of polished, anticipate-your-every-need service that is a hallmark of higher-end cruise ships.

Still, it's also just the first week. I've sailed on dozens of inaugural voyages of vessels over many years writing about cruising , and there always are kinks to work out at the start. Atlas still is in startup mode, and it's hard to tell quite where it will land as a brand when it comes to service. But I suspect that within a few months, or even weeks, it'll be as "luxe" as they want it to be.

Related: Why I'm so excited about Atlas Ocean Voyages

Note that Atlas plans to operate the vessel with a crew of around 130 people (not all of whom are yet on board). Assuming a passenger count of 184 at the most, that's a passenger-to-crew ratio of 1.4 to 1 -- right up there with the best luxury lines.

The company that created Atlas Ocean Voyages, the Portuguese tourism company Mystic Invest Holding, is no stranger to operating cruise vessels. It's one of the world's largest river cruise operators, operating more than a dozen vessels in Portugal for a mix of brands including AmaWaterways , Avalon Waterways, Uniworld and Scenic Cruises, as well as vessels around the world under the Nicko Cruises brand.

Mystic Invest Holding also already operates two expedition vessels that are similar to World Navigator for two brands, Quark Expeditions and Nicko Cruises.

Bottom line

There are a lot of reasons to be excited about World Navigator , the first ship from startup line Atlas Ocean Voyages.

Built for adventurous travel to faraway places such as Antarctica and the Arctic, it's a small and intimate ship at a time when small and intimate is what many luxury travelers are craving most.

Particularly on off-the-beaten-path adventures. If it's exclusiveness you want, traveling to a place like Antarctica with just 180 or fewer other people is a lot different than traveling there with 380 or 520 people -- the amounts that some expedition ships currently under construction from top-name cruise brands will hold.

World Navigator cabins review

The Atlas Ocean Voyages (AOV) cruise ship World Navigator is an all-suite, all-balcony vessel with a total of 98 staterooms for 196 passengers (max capacity 200). Each of the staterooms offers as standard (complimentary / price-inclusive) amenities

  • en-suite bathroom (shower, WC, washbasin, hairdryer, plush bathrobes and slippers, premium bath products)
  • separate bedroom (Queen-size double bed convertible to 2 twins / single beds, bedside cabinets, bedside USB charging ports, wall-mounted lamps)
  • mirrored vanity table / writing desk with armchair, lounge area (2-seater sofabed, coffee table with chairs), Horizon and Veranda cabins additionally have a plush loveseat
  • smart HDTV (infotainment system, Internet, on-demand movies, Bluetooth connectivity), large wardrobe, electronic safe box and lifejackets (in the closet), minibar (fully-stocked refrigerator)

Still and sparkling bottled water is provided complimentary and replenished twice daily. Towels (excluding those on the rack) and bedsheets are changed every 3rd day (depending on cruise itinerary length). Shipboard laundry and ironing services are available at extra cost. Laundry bags are provided in the cabins and collected each morning.

Each cabin is equipped with orange-coloured lifejackets, which are used in cases of emergencies and during lifeboat drills. The boat's electrical supply is 220 V (50 Hz). The electrical outlets (found in all cabins and throughout the ship) are standard European 2-pin plugs. A total of 5 USB ports (per cabin) are for digital devices (cameras, smartphones, tablets, etc). Each cabin is also fitted with a total of 5 power outlets (110V / 220V).

Most cabins (~90%) are with private step-out balconies, excepting only the aft-located (decks 5-6) "French Balcony" cabins, which are with a sliding window opening to a railing (Juliet balcony). Cabin balconies are furnished with 1 low table and 2 deckchairs. Superior, Deluxe and Owner suites additionally have 2 lounge chairs on their balconies.

Balcony cabins (Veranda Stateroom) are same-sized (25 m2) but with a step-out balcony.

The boat's 12x Adventure-type (Porthole) cabins are located midship on Deck 3, and each has a large non-opening window.

'Nothing can prepare you for 9 months': Guests reflect on Royal Caribbean world cruise

Portrait of Nathan Diller

  • The Ultimate World Cruise, which departed from Miami in December, garnered widespread attention in the weeks following its departure.
  • The 274-night cruise visiting more than 60 countries allowed the ship to visit a wide range of destinations.
  • The trip didn’t always go as originally planned, either. Royal Caribbean rerouted the vessel earlier this year and there was even a flooding.

Audrey Martucci had never been on a cruise before booking a nine-month sailing with Royal Caribbean International .

The travel was one appeal, but the 60-year-old had another motivation. Her husband, Joe, had “no intention” of retiring, according to Audrey. “And so when the travel agent contacted us, and he called me, my first thought was, ‘Well, this will mean that you'll retire, so I'll say yes to this cruise,’” she said, laughing.

She and Joe – an avid cruiser – took a few sailings to warm up for the Ultimate World Cruise , which departed from Miami in December. “But nothing can prepare you for nine months,” said Joe, 67.

The Orlando, Florida, couple, who are now both retired, dove into travel. They sold their car, and their nephew moved into their house while they made the Serenade of the Seas ship their home.

The 274-night cruise visiting more than 60 countries garnered widespread attention in the weeks following its departure. Dispatches from passengers went viral on TikTok, amplified by other users recapping the latest developments and subsequent media reports.

Ahead of the sailing’s conclusion on Tuesday, USA TODAY spoke with several guests about what it was like spending nearly a year sailing around the world.

‘This ship was going places that I’d never been’

The length of the cruise allowed the ship to visit a wide range of destinations. That was a big draw even for guests like Joe Martucci, who had traveled extensively for work. “This ship was going places that I’d never been,” he said. Those included Buenos Aires, Argentina – allowing him and Audrey to see the sun rise over Iguazu Falls – and Copacabana Beach in Brazil.

Adita Larson, a guest from Houston, said Antarctica was her favorite destination. “You can't video and you can’t photograph how beautiful it is to stand in front of those icebergs and see them right in front of your eyes so close,” said the 64-year-old.

Royal Caribbean also curated experiences for passengers. Brandee Lake, 47, had been to the Great Wall of China before, but the cruise line offered an exclusive tour of the Badaling section this time around. “So, it was super exciting to have it basically private for our group,” said Lake, who was previously based in Los Angeles. “Like, when does that happen?”

She also seized opportunities to set out on her own. When the ship skipped a stop in Madagascar due to a storm, for example, Lake flew there herself for a brief visit.

But visiting even the most exciting places can take a toll after a while. The ship’s Europe segment that began in July was quite port-heavy, with only a handful of sea days in the first couple of months. Larson said many folks on board complained of being “exhausted.”

“It’s a blur,” she said. “We don’t know where we were yesterday; we don’t know where we’re going tomorrow.”

The Martuccis echoed the sentiment. At one point during the cruise, a friend of theirs stayed behind while their partner took a shore excursion. “And I remember coming back and saying to Joe, ‘You can do that? We don’t have to go?’ ” Audrey recalled. “That was, like, a huge revelation to me.”

At the beginning of the cruise, they said many guests “hated” days without any stops. “Now we’re all like, ‘Oh my god, a sea day. This is so good,’ ” she said.

The trip didn’t always go as originally planned, either. Royal Caribbean rerouted the vessel earlier this year amid continued attacks in the Red Sea, for example. Rather than transiting through the Suez Canal, the ship sailed an alternate path around Africa.

Lake said canceled ports during the voyage served as a “reminder to be flexible.”

“I think if I learned anything, it’s to expect the unexpected,” she said.

The ship also saw flooding in parts of the ship amid rough weather off the coast of South America in January, and the line confirmed the death of a passenger in February.

Story continues below.

‘Just like any other community’

Cruise ships are often described as cities at sea, and the Ultimate World Cruise fostered a neighborly sense of camaraderie, passengers said.

“I mean, obviously, it’s just like any other community,” said Lake. “You have the people that you are really close to, some of them are acquaintances, maybe some that are not your people, but nothing wrong. It’s just, you have your group that you naturally gel with.”

Outside of roughly 650 Ultimate World Cruise guests, the sailing was also sold in segments, bringing new folks into the mix every couple of months or so. If passengers ever need space, Audrey Martucci said, they can find solace in their cabins. “Or there’s lots of spaces on the ship that you can go and hide,” she said.

And while the Martuccis took pains to prepare themselves for the trip – they even scoped out the ship during one of their practice cruises – spending so much time with one another was a change. “We went from him working full time to all of a sudden, we're in these small quarters together all the time, and we've done it,” she said. “So, anything else is going to be a breeze now.”

“And you haven’t tossed me overboard,” Joe added.

Guests help each other out, too. Larson said there is a group chat on Facebook where passengers can ask for items they need or post things they no longer want to exchange with one another.

Lake advised anyone thinking about taking a world cruise to pack light – a lesson she learned from experience. She brought three large suitcases, a rolling carry-on bag and a backpack. “I pared it down, and it's still just too much,” she said. “It's kind of like your own closet: you really only wear about 10% to 20% of it.”

While she felt she had too many shoes and rarely wore her accessories, other items like cubbies for the closet came in handy.

Still, the logistics of managing life can be more complex on a ship. Larson pointed to her condominium, which suffered minor damage during Hurricane Beryl . “So not being there to deal with things like that,” she said. “Of course, we could have gone home, but it wasn't that huge of an emergency.” She found other tasks, like paying bills, easy to keep up with online.

The Martuccis even managed to buy a car remotely, so they’ll have one when the cruise ends, and a home in Audrey’s native Scotland, where they plan to spend summers. “We’ve been able to function,” said Joe.

As for whether they got tired of the food, Joe said, “It's just like at home, you open your refrigerator and go, ‘That's all we have,’ and you decide to go out instead of eating (at home). You kind of get that feeling sometimes.” But he emphasized that compared to the earlier cruise they took on Serenade of the Seas, the culinary team “upped their game” for the nine-month sailing.

What is a world cruise?: It's not a 'shoot-from-the-hip decision'

Going viral

The attention the cruise received online caught passengers like the Martuccis off guard. They originally planned to share videos with their kids, who suggested they post on TikTok . Their follower count jumped from “almost none” to nearly 100,000 within a week, according to Joe.

“We fell into it, and we got caught up in this daily video,” Audrey said. “But it’s been great.”

Lake, who has been chronicling her trip online as well, echoed that, calling the experience a “surprise.” She and the Martuccis both noted they had been recognized by strangers on board.

Larson didn’t have a TikTok account when she boarded the ship, but she’s had fun sharing videos from the trip. She hopes to continue doing so back on land, “especially after we get home, the adjustment after nine months of being away from home, and sleeping on a bed that's not rocking anymore.”

Nine months at sea hasn’t soured them on travel. Larson has nearly 30 cruises booked, the first of which takes place in October. Lake, who gave up her apartment and a job in advertising and marketing to travel full-time, plans to start a new profession, organizing group trips.

The Martuccis also have many travel plans, including a family cruise on Royal Caribbean’s Icon of the Seas in January. “We're not going to let the grass grow under our feet,” said Joe.

Royal Caribbean cruise guide: How to have the perfect family vacation at sea

Make the most of your royal caribbean experience with this guide for families..

Cortney Fries

Known for its record-breaking cruise ships, wow-worthy entertainment, and over-the-top water parks, Royal Caribbean has been welcoming families to the high seas since 1968. I’ve sailed on a number of RCL ships, including  Symphony of the Seas, Navigator of the Seas,  and most recently Wonder of the Seas . With those experiences as a background, I’ve put together this guide on how to make the most of your Royal Caribbean experience when cruising with kids.

What to know about Royal Caribbean’s ships and ship classes

Royal Caribbean has multiple classes of ships, with varying options for dining and entertainment.  Icon of the Seas  is the biggest ship and the lead of the Icon class, home to the largest water park at sea as well as the tallest waterslide. The also-enormous Oasis class of ships includes Oasis of the Seas, Allure of the Seas, Harmony of the Seas, Symphony of the Seas , and Wonder of the Seas .

On these ships, you can explore neighborhoods like Central Park, where you can stroll outdoors amongst foliage and eateries; and Boardwalk, with a carousel, candy store, and arcade games.  Navigator   of the Seas  is part of the Oasis class and has escape rooms and a blow dry bar that was super fun to get glammed up at with my girl.

HOW TO CHOOSE: 12 best family cruise lines for all ages

Many families love these larger ships and their range of entertainment options. The cruise line’s smaller ships don’t typically see as many kids. So, if you’re looking for a vacation where you spend a lot of family time together, choose a smaller ship in the offseason. If you’re hoping to meet new people and have your children play at the kids clubs, choose a larger ship. Summer, spring break, and winter holiday time periods tend to have higher kid counts across the fleet as well.

Choose from a variety of cruise destinations

The Caribbean is popular for family cruises because it’s relatively close and typically sunny and warm. On Royal Caribbean, it’s also popular because you can visit Royal Caribbean’s insanely cool private island, Perfect Day at CocoCay . Royal Caribbean’s cruises to the region depart from Miami, Orlando, Texas, New Jersey, and other U.S. locations.

BEFORE YOU GO: Cruising with kids in the Caribbean? Don’t feel bad about skipping these 6 ports

If you’re considering a multigenerational cruise, consider an Alaskan cruise, suggests Erin Stransky, Senior Manager of Family Strategic Operations for Royal Caribbean. “Families can be together all day on excursions like glacier hiking and whale watching,” she says.

Europe cruises are another good option for families. Could you imagine sailing to Italy, Greece, France, Spain or Croatia? Sounds dreamy!

Things to do onboard a Royal Caribbean cruise

My absolute favorite entertainment on Royal Caribbean cruises is the jaw-dropping shows at the AquaTheater, which can only be described as high-energy and captivating. One example is inTENse, an all-female production in which aerialists dangle from high above the ship, swimmers plunge into a tiny pool, and athletes jump and dance on a slackline to the crowd’s amazement while loud music amplifies the experience.

BRING THE LITTLE ONES: Calling all babies and toddlers: These are the best cruise lines and ships for kids under 5

Stransky says she never misses an ice show. She finds it amazing that Royal Caribbean has the capability to put an ice rink on a cruise ship. My family found the costumes and caliber of the performances captivating. You can also ice skate yourselves if you book a time slot in advance.

My kids’ favorite activities have varied as they’ve gotten older, but they’ve never found themselves bored on a Royal Caribbean cruise ship. My 15-year-old son became enthralled with the rock wall, seeing how many times he could ring the bell on different routes. He also thoroughly enjoyed the teen activities like dodgeball and touchdown football toss. Our 12-year-old daughter was inspired by Family Karaoke and insisted on performing any chance she could, even though she’s never sung on stage before, only because the audience was so encouraging.

The pier at Perfect Day at CocoCay (Photo: Royal Caribbean)

During the days, we savored the pools, hot tubs, and water slides. You can also play laser tag, ride the zip line, try the surf simulator, play basketball, participate in game shows, and so much more.

IT’S ALL INCLUDED: 7 best all-inclusive cruise lines in the world

Royal Caribbean’s kids club is called Adventure Ocean, which is included for babies to age 12 and has recently been reimagined to add new technology like storybook wands for three- to five-year-olds. Six- to 12-year-olds are grouped together in an open free flow space where they can choose from games like gaga ball tournaments and crazy tag to hanging out with a book or movie. Children can have hands-on fun in a science workshop or art lab, yet not feel pressure to participate if they don’t want to.

Because teens ages 13 to 17 don’t want to be treated like kids, the teen lounge is more of a hangout hub where they can game, listen to music or meet new friends.

Choosing the right cabin for your family

On its newer ships, Royal Caribbean offers some unforgettable and luxurious accommodations like the Ultimate Family Suite, which has an in-room slide among other over-the-top touches. For those of us with more average financial resources, there are various other types of cabins and locations onboard to fit your budget and vacation style, too.

An interior stateroom is the cheapest way to go. Quad staterooms feature pullout couches and are great for families with little kids. Connecting rooms are wonderful for large families and older children, as you seek more space and privacy. (If you need a number of connecting rooms, it’s best to book as far in advance as possible.) Rooms across the hall from each are an option for families with adult children, as cruisers must be 21 or older to have their own room.

FOR OLDER KIDS: 5 cruise lines that know how to keep teenagers happy

Smaller staterooms feature showers. Junior suites or larger include bath tubs, which are often preferred by families with babies and toddlers. Family suites boast at least two bathrooms, which can make getting ready a lot faster. Icon of the Seas in particular features great staterooms for families, specifically the suites. Junior suites are decorated with a different look and feel for different age groups.

In terms of location, consider whether you’d like to be near certain features of the ship, like water slides or the teen lounge, or if your group would prefer a quieter setting. Families with mobility considerations might prefer rooms closest to the elevators.

Dining options for families on Royal Caribbean

When you think about cruising, does the seemingly endless food come to mind? With buffets, specialty dining, casual pizza, taco and hot dog places, bars and restaurants, there seems to always be something tasty to eat.

On Royal Caribbean, you can choose your own casual dining adventure at the Windjammer buffet. It serves a variety of foods for breakfast, lunch, and dinner, so you know even the pickiest eaters will find something to enjoy. I’m a huge fan of the Royal Caribbean muesli for breakfast, which is like overnight oats with cinnamon, apples, and orange juice. I also highly recommend the Indian food choices onboard. You can find flavorful curries and warm, chewy naan.

ANOTHER OPTION: Everything you need to know about river cruises in the U.S.

The Main Dining Room is available for more elegant brunches and dinners. It has themes from Caribbean to Italian and the same service team stays with you, becoming familiar with your family’s dining preferences. You can choose between early and late dinner times (think 5:45 p.m. vs. 7:45 p.m.). I always recommend the earlier option for families so that you can make the 8:0 p.m. shows after dinner. As my kids got older, I thought the later option might allow for more fun in the sun; but, truthfully, none of us felt like going to shows at 10:00 p.m. If you have night owls in your family, the later options might be a better fit for you.

In terms of beverages, you can choose between a Classic soda package; a Refreshment package including coffees, juices, and milkshakes; and the Deluxe beverage package with wine and cocktails.

On our most recent Royal Caribbean cruise, we enjoyed a three-restaurant Specialty Dining Package and tried Giovanni’s Italian Kitchen, Hooked Seafood, and Chops Grille steakhouse.

Giovanni’s wood-fired oven bubbled up a pizza my teen raved about. Our meal at Hooked Seafood was especially memorable because the chef cooked up a special gluten-free feast for my daughter. Surrounded by plates piled with savory shrimp and indulgent desserts, I’ve never seen her so ecstatic at a restaurant. Chops Grille was an exceptional experience from the moment we entered the swanky steakhouse. Our server spoiled us with juicy steaks, crisp wedge salads, crunchy crab cakes, and warm apple pie a la mode.

The food was so good we swore we’d eat only grilled chicken and spinach for at least a week after we got home.
