Is San Pedro Sula Safe? Crime Rates & Safety Report

San Pedro Sula, Honduras

Honduras : Safety by City

  • San Pedro Sula
  • Tegucigalpa

San Pedro Sula is a city in northern Honduras.

It is the second-largest city in Honduras after the capital Tegucigalpa.

Though it has a very bad reputation for being a dangerous city, it also offers gastronomic and cultural diversity at its best.

Another plus is the fact that the beaches are nice and they are about an hour or two away from the city, so you can come and go the same day and have a great time in San Pedro Sula.

The people of San Pedro Sula, like most Hondurans, are friendly warm people. Just be aware of your surroundings at all times.

  • Warnings & Dangers in San Pedro Sula

OVERALL RISK: HIGH

San Pedro Sula is unsafe to visit, and has many dangers. You should be aware that tourist hotspots, public transportation and some streets are places where most thefts and pickpocketing occur, and that violent crime exists on the streets, too.

TRANSPORT & TAXIS RISK: HIGH

Public transport is highly risky in San Pedro Sula. There have been robberies in public transport and buses are sometimes stopped while the robbers attack or harass the passengers. Be wary of unlicensed taxis since you might get kidnapped and robbed.

PICKPOCKETS RISK: MEDIUM

As for pickpocketing and bag snatching, it is a recurring concern on the streets of San Pedro Sula, so be careful and hold your bags tightly by your side. Make sure you don't flash your valuable possessions on the street, or better yet, leave them in your accommodation.

NATURAL DISASTERS RISK: MEDIUM

As for the natural disasters in San Pedro Sula, the rainy seasons that last from May to November bring many disastrous threats such as floods, hurricanes, and landslide. Apart from that, Honduras is located in an active earthquake zone so tremors can be expected.

MUGGING RISK: HIGH

Mugging is also an issue in San Pedro Sula. In such a situation, hand over all your possessions immediately and do not resist. Armed bandits often attack minibusses and vans loaded with tourists traveling from the airport to their hotels in San Pedro Sula. Avoid poorly lit and deserted areas.

TERRORISM RISK: LOW

The risks of terrorist attacks in San Pedro Sula are low, but since they shouldn't be ruled out, you must remain vigilant at all times and aware of your surroundings.

SCAMS RISK: HIGH

As in almost any city, there is a great risk of getting scammed if you're a tourist. Always check everything twice and negotiate everything in advance. Taxi drivers might try to trick you into paying more, giving you wrongful information about the price of the ride.

WOMEN TRAVELERS RISK: LOW

Many women have traveled alone to San Pedro Sula and haven't had any problems at all. However, this country isn't the safest in terms of females traveling solo, especially at night and you should exercise precaution measures at all times.

  • So... How Safe Is San Pedro Sula Really?

Though its residents (and many tourists) say that San Pedro Sula is a gorgeous city, you should keep in mind that it has extremely high rates of crime.

The most common form of crime is petty theft, pickpocketing and purse snatching occurring all the time on the streets of San Pedro Sula.

This means that you should keep your valuables in a concealed place and avoid going out with jewelry and flashy objects.

Be aware of your surroundings at all times.

Streets of San Pedro Sula are known for robberies that happen both during day and night, often carried out by two-man teams on motorcycles that snatch items from pedestrians.

Violent crime is a serious issue in the entire country, with crimes such as kidnappings, rape, assaults, and murders.

Armed robbery is a common problem, with armed bandits attacking minibusses and vans loaded with tourists traveling from the airport to their hotels in San Pedro Sula.

Sometimes they even stop the buses to rob and assault the passengers and drivers.

Murder rate may be the biggest concern for foreigners.

During the period between 2010 and 2015 Honduras had the highest murder rate in the entire world.

Because of this, visitors are strongly advised against discussing the details of their travel plans and accommodation in public.

  • How Does San Pedro Sula Compare?
  • Useful Information

Most countries do not need a visa to enter Honduras for any stays shorter than 30 days. Make sure your passport is valid for at least six months past your date of arrival. If you are not sure about your visa status, contact your local Honduran embassy for further information.

Honduran lempira is the official currency in Honduras. All corners of the city have ATMs all around but be careful when handling it on the streets. Credit cards are usually accepted in tourist-related establishments.

San Pedro Sula has a tropical climate which is characterized in this country by cooler, milder weather in the mountains with lower temperatures of about 16°C to 20°C.

Ramón Villeda Morales International Airport also referred to as La Mesa International Airport is the main and busiest airport in Honduras, serving San Pedro Sula. It is located 11 km east of the city of San Pedro Sula.

Travel Insurance

Just like anywhere else, we advise getting travel insurance when traveling to San Pedro Sula, because it would cover not only medical problems but also theft and loss of valuables.

i was shotted

Yes. You probably were.

Most dangerous city in the world, really? It can’t be worse than Liverpool.

The statistics say otherwise.

not as dangerous as yorkton

The best part I enjoyed was all the gals looking me over like a piece of candy in a candy store. I thought it might be my imagination until my wife got mad & told me to quit flirting. If you are used to that you might not notice but that has never happened to me before or since.

You looked like you were able to pay.

No problems for me

While I wouldn’t wander the streets alone at night – which is something I don’t do regardless where I’m traveling – I wouldn’t take this city off the list just because they have a high-crime rate, this isn’t tourist-related, it’s drug-related.

You gotta watch your back but you’ll have fun if you know where to go

Just like Colton already commented, just because the city has problems with gangs it doesn’t necessarily translate into problems for people who land in the city for a few days of fun in the sun. If you’ve had San Pedro Sula on your list and really want to visit it then go for it but make sure you know what you’re getting yourself into.

Since we’re talking about a city that was once the murder capital of the world I would exercise caution when exploring the city. To be honest, I visited the city along with other friends so I have no idea what would have been like for a solo traveler. Our travel agent basically said we had to act as normal as possible while not flaunting any possessions when we’re out.

Ubering around is way safer than using public transport and it’s downright cheap so we made this our go-to means of transportation.

Roatan is an island that would appeal to most tourists, the offshore reefs make it perfect for divers of all levels. The locals are both polite and friendly. Let’s face it, most of their income comes from tourism and they know it.

When talking about San Pedro Sula I find it best to talk about caution. Being aware of your location, not sharing where you’re going or where you’re meeting with random strangers, carrying as little cash as possible, all these are things that will prevent you from standing out from the crowd, no matter where you’re traveling.

If you’re here for the nightlife I would be extra careful not to get drunk, regardless if you plan to use an uber after or not. Being on top of your game is vital, otherwise you might find yourself a target for midnight robbery.

Wow, that was a long typing session. But to recap, this city is far from being the kind of city where you can do what you please, when you please. Common sense will get you a long way.

Sleep at airport or stay in hotel

Thanks for the advice! I thought about staying one night in a hotel in San Pedro Sula, but maybe I’ll just fly directly to Roatan or I’ll sleep at San Pedro Sula Airport.

San Pedro Sula, Honduras – City Guide for Nomads and Expats

September 9, 2017

city travel san pedro sula

Updated in 2022.

San Pedro Sula, Honduras.

Drops in and out of the number one spot for world’s most dangerous city. It’s the second largest city in Honduras and a transport hub. Chances are you’ll take a bus to get here. Needless to say, it is not a part of the gringo trail. It is however a surprisingly modern city, and the centre of industry in Honduras.  The city is rather spread out, and surprisingly affordable. Everybody is super friendly.

POPULATION: 1,000,000

Table of Contents

IS SAN PEDRO SULA SAFE FOR TOURISTS AND TRAVELERS?

San Pedro Sula is dangerous. Tourists are not the target, but with an average of 3 murders a day, it’s possible to be at the wrong place at the wrong time and catch a stray or two. Also, the threat of express kidnapping is very real in San Pedro Sula. Most travelers are Canadian or American – if you’re European you’ll particularly stand out. Honduran cities are for the braves. Anywhere you walk you will be watched. Even locals are careful to not walk the street. The atmosphere can feel pretty heavy. All that being said, it is not as unsafe as people think. You can go walking during the day and you don’t get followed. In fact, during the day it’s about as safe as any other large city in Central America.

DIGITAL NOMAD COMMUNITY IN SAN PEDRO SULA

There’s basically zero digital nomads in San Pedro Sula. Don’t expect to see many gringos. The foreigners you see here are probably backpacking to or from La Ceiba and the islands. There may also be some foreigners working for international companies. You may be the only digital nomad in town.

RENT AN APARTMENT IN SAN PEDRO SULA

You’ll pay $400.00 a month for an apartment in San Pedro Sula.

THINGS TO DO IN SAN PEDRO SULA

Get out of the city and into nature! There’s very little tourism or tourist infrastructure in San Pedro Sula, but lots of buses to other cities and points of interest. Head to the bus terminal in person because what’s posted online (departures etc) is not likely to be accurate. The nature is great, but in the city itself there isn’t much to do. The highlights from a tourist perspective are the tiny museum, the cathedral in the centre of town, and the Galleria (more on that below).

Elsewhere in Honduras, we recommend you check out La Ceiba and Roatan . The Bay Islands are popular among tourists as well. Visiting some Mayan ruins is a must. Copán is arguably the most famous, not far from the border with Guatemala.

WHERE TO STAY IN SAN PEDRO SULA

The best area to stay is the western part of the city. This is loosely defined as west of Galleria to Colonia Villas Del Sol, Colonia Des Laurelles and Colonia Jardines Del Valle. If you stay on this side of the city, you’re good to go.

BEST CAFES AND COWORKING IN SAN PEDRO SULA

This is Central America, so the coffee is among the best in the world. The hard partis finding a coffee shop that is condusive to working. If you are a digital nomad, I recommend working in a coffee shop in the Mall. I wouldn’t open my laptop in a coffee shop in centro. There are a few coworking spaces in town that aren’t too expensive. The best coworking spaces in San Pedro Sula include Workspace and BrainForce Cowork . In this city, a coworking space is probably your best best for a safe and productive work environment.

BEST BARS & NIGHTLIFE IN SAN PEDRO SULA

6 . 75/10

Pretty damn good lads, pretty damn good! Based on the reports coming out of San Pedro Sula, you’d probably think it was a dusty, backwater town filled with shady criminals. Not true!…well the criminal part is true, but in reality, San Pedro Sula is a very progressive city with many American-style restaurants and bars. That being said, nightlife is still better in La Ceiba .

Most locals hang out at the Galleria or the bars and clubs close to the Galleria. Mall Galerías del Valle is an indoor mall with diverse stores & cafes, a small Ferris wheel for kids & a movie theater. This is where you’ll find the more upscale and ‘safe’ venues.

The second best area for nightlife is the Zona Viva area near the centro. If you’re willing to leave the safe confines of the mall, Zona Viva is where you can really get in the mix. Zona Viva is loosely defined as Av. 15a and 16a, between Calles 7a and 11a. It’s also known as Barrio Suyapa. This is where you’ll find a lot city’s more local bars and clubs.

My Latin Life recommends:

Cielo Rooftop Bar : Cool lounge-style bar with amazing views of the city.

Beyond Club : Some say it’s the best nightclub in the city.

La Musa Gastropub : Upscale bar with great atmosphere. Can bring dates here.

Zeppelin Bar: Chill bar/resataurant with foosball tables and arcade games.

HOW TO GET TO SAN PEDRO SULA

Guatemala City is a 9 hour drive. San Salvador is an 8 hour drive. La Ceiba is a 3.5 hour drive away. There should be buses connecting all of these cities.

COST OF LIVING IN SAN PEDRO SULA

The following data is from Expatistan, a crowdsourced database of prices and cost of living around the world. In our experience, the data tends to underestimate cost of living, so take the following as the minimum you might need to live here.

*Figures are listed in USD

You’ll need a minimum of $894 USD/month to live in San Pedro Sula, Honduras

cost-of-living-san-pedro-sula

FINAL THOUGHTS

There isn’t much to do here. But, if you’re in Honduras anyway, it’s worth checking out San Pedro Sula. It’s the second biggest city in Honduras, after all, and you’ll be surprised at how modern it is. As an expat, you probably won’t be living here unless you have some sort of foreign job that forces you to be here. Or you own a giant coffee plantation. If you are a digital nomad, you could definitely post up here and work and drink coffee without problems. Sometimes the best cities are the ones with zero touristic value, but not sure that logic applies to San Pedro Sula. This is definitely a city for the adventure traveler.

OVERALL RATING: 6.25/10

Swim at Punta Sal National Park exotic beaches. Walk through Copan's archaeological site and horse back ride in a coffee tour.

The Mall Multi Plaza, Mega Plaza and Metro Plaza all have cinema complexes. Closer to downtown you will find 2 or 3 cinemas. Movie releases are a few months behind the USA or Western Countries. Most movies are shown in English with Spanish subtitles. Ticket prices range from US$1.20 to $2.50 depending on the cinema and to extent the quality of their facilities. All popular American fast food chains are available in the city, however, try Pollo Campero, a Guatemalan fried chicken chain and Pollos el Hondureño, autentic Honduran fast food chain. The Skandia cafe at the Grand Hotel Sula is open 24 hours with a good selection. Most selections are good but the rotissery chicken is great. Skip the scrambled eggs or omelets.

For a wide selection, go to City Mall food court with lots of choices, including US fast food and Honduran versions. Another great option only found in San Pedro Sula is Power Chicken, the most popular location right in front of the City Mall. Here you can try familiar food with a Honduran twist. Very good and very cheap

  • Don Udos , on Boulevard Morazon a few blocks up from the Circunvalacion. A favorite amongst foreigners, it has a good variety of international dishes and a good variety of wine. Meal prices: US$8 to US$15
  • Arnie's Diner and Grill , on 7 st, 19 Ave SO in Barrio Rio de Pierdas. It has an international menu, friendly staff and good service and is one of the best value for money restaurants in San Pedro Sula. US$6-12.
  • The Gallery Grill , in Zona Viva offers a range of Honduran dishes, particularly meat.
  • Las Carnitas , Las Carnitas is located in Zona Viva and is a local favorite, for its open-air atmosphere, occasional live music and Honduran style beef and chicken dishes. Meal prices: US$5 to US$10
  • Pamplona , Pamplona is in Central Park and is a local icon. The place gets very busy during lunch times and breakfasts. It offers a range of national and international dishes at very good prices, such as chicken soup for only $1.50. The restaurant is AC and offers a nice place to escape with a cool drink and coffee from the downtown heat. Meal prices: US$1.50 to US$6

The Antojitos Mexicanos , has 2 popular locations, one downtown in Central Park the other on the Circunvalacion near Zona Viva. Antojitos is one of the cheapest places to eat in the city, with Mexican style tacos, enchiladas, tortas and so on. The Circunvalacion branch has its own groups of Mariachis who strum and blow their stuff in the evenings for the patrons, nice place to eat cheap, drink a beer or two and to soak up some local atmosphere. Meal prices: US$2 to US$5

San Pedro Sula is home to a lot of additional eating options, which have a wide range of prices from budget to upper class. Try some of the local fast food places such as Pollo Campero, Bicos, Power Chicken (great name), or 2 x 1 Pizza.

Drink [ edit ]

San Pedro Sula is home to a lot of bars. A fun night can be had in Zona Viva going from bar to bar. A local favorite and fun place to hang out is La Cava in Barrio Los Andes 2 and 3 Calle, 16 Ave NO. Great Karaoke nights and occasional live music on the weekends packs the people in. Jerry the owner mixes a range or cocktails. Watch out for the Barcardi 121 or ask if he has some Guaro for a fire packed drink. There is a good selection of music and the patrons are always happy to have a chat.

Karaoke Club in Zona Viva is a popular place with the locals and even if you are not a Karaoke fan it can be a good place to catch some quality music. The quality of the singers is at times surprising and at other times not so surprising. Big Daddies, Caribbean and Gators Sports Bar are also all popular spots in Zona Viva. Bars do come and go regularly in San Pedro Sula, so just look for a place with some people and some music.

TGI Fridays, Applebee's, Ruby Tuesdays and Fogancito's are all popular places to eat and drink on the weekends. All places are well located near the Circunvalcion.

For a bit more local color and atmosphere, consider visiting a local disco. Thursday, Friday and Saturday nights are the most popular. But most discos are open every night except Monday. Check the local papers for promotion nights such as ladies night, live music, beer promotions or open bar (cover charge, then all you care to drink).

The pick of the discos is Kawamas Bay, which is located on the Circunvalcion. The disco plays a lot of Latin music and has a friendly staff. It can get very busy on the weekends usually around 23:00. The disco stays open to 05:00-06:00 and it is a place to dance. You will find more people on the dance floor than at the bar or tables and chairs for most of the night. So put on your dancing shoes and be ready for some Salsa, Merengue and Punta. No need to worry, since you will still get a bit of house, rock and techno music. Cover charges vary from US$2.50 to $6, depending on the night.

Millenium Disco is in the Social Club Arabe at the end of Barrio Rio Pierdas the disco is the classiest place in town. Friday and Saturday nights are busy and cover charges vary from US$3.50 to $6.

The Sampedrano Cultural Center holds regularly events such as concerts, performances and art shows. +1 504 553-3911 or 553-3768 for event schedules.

For safety reasons, be sure to take a taxi when traveling even just a few blocks after dark. Walking around Zona Viva is OK but only within a block or two radius of the area. Otherwise just get a taxi, most fares cost US$2 to $3, but prices do go up the later the night gets.

  • Power Chicken , Barrio Suyapa Esquina Zona Viva ( Frente a City Mall ), ☏ +504 2553-5353 . Traditional Honduran food served fast-good style. A staple of Honduran cuisine with 4 locations within the city.

Stay safe [ edit ]

The area around San Pedro Sula has had a reputation of being dangerous for locals and tourists, and gang violence earned the city the dubious distinction of "murder capital of the world" until 2016, when the title was taken by Caracas.

The Parque Central should be avoided at night.

There are certain areas of the city, including neighborhoods in the outer parts of the city, which should be avoided even during the day, but these areas are off the tourists' trail.

Go next [ edit ]

San Pedro Sula is a good base for getting out to the beaches at Tela , Puerto Cortes and Omoa , the Bay Islands in the Caribbean Sea, the amazing Maya ruins of Copán , or south towards Lake Yojoa , Comayagua , and Tegucigalpa .

Tela is only about an hour drive from San Pedro, which has nice Caribbean beaches. TelaMar is the place to stay.

Leaving from San Pedro Sula you can visit Cusuco National Park . The diversity of activities at this park is huge. Hiking, mountain biking, rappelling, camping, Bbrd watching, waterfall swimming, caving, night tours.

San Pedro Sula

San pedro sula, honduras’ financial and manufacturing hub.

Honduras’ second largest city is the financial and manufacturing center of Honduras. Located in the department of Cortes, and boasting the busiest airport in the country (SAP) San Pedro Sula is the ideal gateway into Honduras. Its geographical location makes it the perfect jumping point to visit sites such as Copan Ruinas to the west, Lake Yojoa to the south, Atlantida to the east and Omoa and Puerto Cortes to the north.

Over the years, San Pedro Sula has earned a terrible reputation as the murder capital of the world. This of course, sounds absolutely intimidating! But the truth is that the San Pedro Sula you will see as a tourist is actually a modern city with good infrastructure. American style malls, World Class international franchise hotels, and a great selection of restaurants to choose from. The San Pedro Sula you will experience and get to know is far from the areas dominated by gangs and danger. I truly suggest store your fears and enjoy your visit to the city. I personally lived here for over 7 years, and must say that I never felt threatened any way or form!

San Pedro Sula boasts the best bus terminal in Central America! All of the intercity buses in and out of the city meet. This makes it easy and safe to travel by bus.  From San Pedro Sula you can get bus transportation to almost every city in Honduras, as well as service to Guatemala City, San Salvador, Managua and San Jose Costa Rica.

The city has several different consular offices. This makes it easy for travelers to get assistance from their governments if they need to.

The city offers a variety of cultural services. This includes several different museums, so there is something here for everyone. There are many different things to do in San Pedro Sula ! The city quickly grew from a small town in 1950’s to a large city today. This coincides with the time when the Tela Railroad Company first set its headquarters in La Lima, just outside San Pedro Sula and next to the airport. Today, the metropolitan Sula Valley area boasts a population of over 1 ½ million people! The city also has two different golf courses you can play in. Both are in La Lima, next to the airport.

For the purposes of our travel blog, we will consider the all of the metropolitan Sula Valley cities as part of San Pedro Sula. This includes Puerto Cortes and the beach town of Omoa, which are very close to the city. We will also include the department of Santa Barbara. This is just to the West of San Pedro Sula as part of the same region.

Very good, despite we had a delay because of some problems at the airport.

More information is needed on travel Requirements in the check in website

As usual, the flight with normal legroom was not very comfortable, but the second flight was much better because we had paid for extra legroom. It was very nice to check our bags without an extra fee.

The inflight entertainment did not work on a 6 hour flight The cel phone chargers did not work There was a 45 minute wait for the luggage to get off the plane.

Boarding was very expedite. The chairs are fixed you can't rest comfortable during the flight.

Awful. I checked in online and there was no option to pay for baggage, at the airport when I checked in my baggage was received and Iwas not charged. When I got to LA during the boarding process I was told I didn't pay for baggage, the crew resolved I was let in the plane. When I got to my final destination my baggage was not there. It took me two days to receive my baggage. Bad service ever!

There was no food or drink service, couldn’t even get a glass of water for free. It was a long and expensive flight to not offer food or beverage on the plane.

It is better at the jfk than my home country. It was very easy and everything was on time.

My experience was amazing! They helped my elderly mother board on early through a wheelchair and were accommodating to have us sit together since our seats were in different locations. When landing at the airport in GUA they were very helpful with full of hospitality.

Delay almost an hour which meant when we got to Guatemala there where 3 flights at the same time, you can imagine the caos in customs, avianca doesn’t care about passengers or schedules

I flew with my service dog unfortunately they didn’t allow it to flight on the canine, but ok, the only problem was that when I arrived to Quito it took 1 hour to deliver my dog, they were supposed to deliver it the moment we get off the airplane.

Avianca: you pay for a high-end flight and you fly like a low (very low) cost!

They charge me $190.00 dollars for the baggage for the bag in side the plane and in the baggage compartment in the plane. The service I got bad bad bad they make wait for a log time and i got to the airport 4 hours before. I don't think I'm going to use you guys never never again no support . And I am going to tell all the guys and people i now to don' use KAYAK

Allow for not applicable in your survey if there is no food or entertainment on a very short flight of only one hour

Notsure if it was an issue with the airline or Guatemala Int airport, but boarding information, times posted, and boarding to aircraft where contadicting n confusing - relied on gate airline staff n fellow travelers.

The flight was cancelled 2 time as. The airline was stranded me in Guatemala with no solution.

My flight was cancelled 2 times with no solution left stranded in Guatemala.

Boarding was long and messy. No food was offered on the flight. No entertainemnt. Clean flight however.
