Johan Cruijff ArenA

Amsterdam ArenA

One of Europe’s first large modern stadiums and still an icon in world football.

Club: AFC Ajax | Opening: 1996 | Capacity: 53,748 seats

History and description

The Johan Cruijff ArenA, previously called Amsterdam ArenA, was built between 1993 and 1996. It replaced Ajax’s previous home De Meer , which, with a capacity of 19,000 seats, had become too small for the club.

The Amsterdam ArenA officially opened on 14 August 1996 with a match between Ajax and AC Milan (0-3). The first goal in the new arena was scored by Dejan Savicevic. Total construction costs had amounted to €96 million.

The Amsterdam ArenA was the first football stadium in Europe with a retractable roof. It takes about 20 minutes to open or close the roof.

Shortly after the opening, it turned out that the stadium design had not accounted for good grass growing conditions, and as a result the pitch had to get renewed up to 5 times a year. These problems were later resolved with the installation of innovative grass growing technology, consisting of a combination of lamps, wind turbines, and water sprinklers.

The Johan Cruijff ArenA counts with a total of 2,229 business seats and a further 820 seats in sky boxes. The stands are among the steepest in Europe, with the second tier having an angle of 37 degrees.

In 1998, the stadium hosted the Champions League final between Real Madrid and Juventus (1-0), and in 2013 the Europa League final  between Chelsea and Benfica (2-1).

The Amsterdam ArenA was one of the playing venues of the Euro 2000 championships, hosting three group match, a quarter-final, and the semi-final between Holland and Italy (0-0).

The stadium has been chosen to be one of the playing venues of the Euro 2020 tournament, which is played across different countries. For this, the stadium got refurbished resulting in larger concourses and a new facade.

How to get to the Johan Cruijff ArenA

The Johan Cruijff ArenA is located in a modern office park in the south-east of Amsterdam, approximately 10 kilometres from the city centre.

The stadium is best reached by train or metro . Train station Bijlmer ArenA lies next to the stadium and can be reached in 15 minutes from Amsterdam Central Station. There is very regular service.

The metro takes only little longer and stops at the same station as well as station Strandvliet/ArenA that lies on the north side of the stadium. Take metro 54 from Amsterdam Central Station, or any of the stops in Amsterdam city centre. Metro 50 connects the stadium with southern and western parts of the city (e.g. Amsterdam Zuid station).

Address: ArenA Boulevard 1, 1101 AX Amsterdam

Eat, drink, and sleep near the Johan Cruijff ArenA

The Johan Cruijff ArenA is part of an entertainment and shopping complex, which includes a large cinema and two of Holland’s principal concert venues (the Ziggo Dome and Afas Live ). There are also a few places to get some (fast) food or have a drink, though options remain rather limited.

Recently, a few new hotels have opened near the Amsterdam ArenA, which include a Hampton by Hilton , the futuristically shaped Fletcher Hotel , and the Jaz Hotel . If arriving by car, the road-side and affordable Bastion Deluxe Hotel is a decent option, though you do need to catch a metro to get to the arena. Click here for an overview of hotels near the Amsterdam ArenA.

Of course, most will prefer to stay closer to Amsterdam’s lively city centre .

Ajax Tickets

Tickets for Ajax games can be bought online .

If tickets remain available, these can usually also be bought at the ticket windows of the Johan Cruijff ArenA on the day of the match, though recently Ajax have been selling out well in advance.

Expect to pay €25.00 for a seat behind the goal and between €30.00 and €50.00 for a seat at one of the sides for a regular match. Prices get increased for the games against Feyenoord and PSV.

Ajax occasionally require possession of an Ajax Club Card to buy match tickets, but most matches go on general sale. There is a separate ticket portal for foreigners to buy tickets.

Johan Cruijff ArenA Stadium Tours

The Johan Cruijff ArenA offers guided tours that include the press room, mixed zone, VIP areas, and dressing rooms. The tour lasts about 60 to 75 minutes and are in English and Dutch.

Tours run every half an hour on weekdays and every 20 minutes on the weekend. You can check the latest schedule here . On the weekend, it is also possible to follow a self-guided tour, which allows you to follow a route around the stadium at your own pace.

The tour costs €16.95. Bookings are not required, but can be made online .

The Arena has 2 very big acts to follow after the old Olympic Stadion in the city and the smaller Meer stadium were no longer used by Ajax. The Olympic Stadion in particular was part of the fabric of Amsterdam West and was so atmospheric on big European nights and matches v Feijenoord. Of course the Arena has all the modern facilities, but it has a certain sterility. It is a modern bowl with each side identical. The stadium was built as part of a new out of town development, part of a kind of ‘concrete jungle’. Being outside Amsterdam it feels somewhat cut off from the city. I believe they want to increase the capacity, but this will not improve the architectural character.

One of my favourite stadiums! It stands out as it is very colourful. The tiers are very steep but it is defenietely worth a visit. Amsterdam itself is very friendly city and i would recommend it to everybody.

There are hotels in the Amsterdam ArenA , e.g. the recently opened and remarkable Fletcher hotel.

Another note: if you find the Amsterdam Central station area already ‘seedy’ at night I’d suggest to stay away from Amsterdam at all. It sure is a messy area because of the many construction sites (new subway line, car and bicycle tunnels, renewal of the Central station, new bus station) but it is a very safe area and not only because it’s heavily patrolled by police and security teams.

Date visited: 29 October 2011

We joined the World of Ajax tour in October 2011. After having checked the Amsterdam Arena website for opening times, we arrived shortly before one of the given departures. As it was a Saturday afternoon there were already a lot of participants waiting and an estimated 50 people joined our tour, which was a lot.

The tour started at pitch-level with the possibility to have your photo taken by a professional photographer. No visit to the dugouts though. We then moved to the press room, where our guide held a fake press conference with some of the tour’s participants.

We subsequently went up the stadium to see the view from the second tier. All the time there was ample time to take photos, and at the second tier some opportunity to walk around the stands. The guide provided background information in Dutch and in English.

As the group was very large, probably too large, moving around the stadium took a lot of time, and one had to wait quite a lot. The guide was friendly, but spoke rather slowly, probably to facilitate the many non-native English speakers, but this added to a feeling of slight tedium.

Possibly the guide could have provided a bit more background information, or spiced things up with some interesting facts. The tour included relatively few parts of the stadium, less than in most tours, and it certainly would have been nice to see the dugouts, players’ tunnel, or VIP boxes. And to have the dressing rooms included in the standard tour.

The stadium is impressive enough to make it a decent experience, especially if your primary aim is to make photos, however the feeling remains that there is more potential than the current tour offers.

The Club: AFC Ajax is the most famous and successful Dutch club having won the European Cup / UEFA Champions League 4 times and the Dutch Eredivisie 36 times. Their peak years came during the early 1970s.

Although Ajax had Eredivisie title wins in 2018-19, 2020-21 and 2021-22, it has lost some form of late and the 2023-24 campaign has been poor by past standards. Ajax has an average attendance of around 54,000 at the ArenA.

Watching Events: Try to see a game of the Netherlands Football team ( Nederlands-elftal ) if at all possible. The Dutch fans adorned in orange are one of the most colourful sights in world football. Not all international home games are played in Amsterdam – the occasional game is also played at Rotterdam’s De Kuip and the Philips Stadium in Eindhoven – all are easily accessible via public transport.

Tickets are available online from the Dutch FA (KNVB) – the big games do sell out so buy your tickets well in advance. You could consider getting tickets for friendly matches – these are not so popular and are cheaper – priced from around €30.

Ajax tickets are only available to verified Ajax account holders. Non-resident visitors can purchase ticket packages to games though these cost around €450 and include a hotel stay.

Well, the Stones are far from being “England’s Newest” anything these days, but they still came across as incredibly fresh and vibrant as they brought the Hackney Diamonds Tour to Levi’s Stadium in Santa Clara on Wednesday (July 17).

It was an amazing showing by the three remaining Stones — all of whom are age 77 or older — and one that nicely illustrated why AARP would decide to sponsor this roadshow. Because if Mick Jagger is what 80 looks like, then, well, sign all of us up.

Jagger, as per usual, was nothing short of miraculous as he worked the full house during a 20-song set that ran approximately two hours. The show began at right around 9 p.m., following an opening set by Canadian rock act The Beaches, and Jagger was still going strong — racing up and down the catwalk that extended from the large mainstage and into the crowd on the floor — as the clock ticked towards 11 p.m. (A representative for the 49ers, who operate the stadium, explained that the team had received an exemption to the regular 10 p.m. weekday curfew rule for this show.)

The group — which also consists of longtime guitarists Ronnie Wood (77) and Keith Richards (80) — kicked off the show in appropriate fashion, revving through the “Tattoo You” anthem “Start Me Up,” and then followed up with the first-tier classics “Get Off of My Cloud” and “Tumbling Dice.”

The Hackney Diamonds Tour supports last year’s album of the same name, which is the group’s first collection of original material in nearly 20 years and has earned solid reviews from both critics and fans.

This injection of new material has obviously been great for the Stones, stirring up creative juices that haven’t really been put to use since 2005’s “A Bigger Bang,” and the band members seemed particularly inspired whenever they turned to a “Hackney Diamonds” track in concert.

The first new cut on the setlist was the album’s lead single, “Angry,” which scored a nomination for best rock song — but ended up losing to Boygenius’ “Not Strong Enough” — at this year’s Grammy Awards. The group was really on a roll as they entered “Angry” territory, having just finished up three straight fan favorites, and the fact that the new song didn’t derail the party one iota is a testament to the strength of “Hackney Diamonds.”

They’d find similar success with the new material a few songs later, offering up a muscular take on “Bite My Head Off” — which is about as punk rock as the Stones get in 2024 — as well as a memorable version of “Mess It Up.” They’d also include a lovely rendition of “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” in the encore.

Jagger was the undeniable bright star throughout the show, operating in full cheerleader mode as he used his moves and vocals to continually push the evening to even greater heights. He also took time to charm the crowd, showing his sports acumen as he gave his blessing to the hometown 49ers.

“Next year, I’m looking forward to you guys winning the Super Bowl,” Jagger said, noting the 10th anniversary of Levi’s Stadium before adding a sports wish that is a bit more personal to his heart: “Maybe England can win the World Cup.”

The consummate frontman further bonded with the audience as he looked back at the long history that the band has with the Bay Area.

“We first came here 59 years ago, if you believe it,” he said. “There was no Silicon Valley. But there was the Cow Palace. I can still smell it.”

The biggest difference between this concert and Stones shows of yore was, of course, the absence of Charlie Watts. This was the first time that the group had played in the Bay Area since the acclaimed drummer died at the age of 80 in 2021. And his presence was greatly missed, to the point where — at times — it just didn’t feel like it was the Stones as you looked up at the stage and didn’t see Watts behind the kit.

The rest of the touring band is also splendid, consisting of bassist Darryl Jones, saxophonists Karl Denson and Tim Ries, multi-instrumentalist Matt Clifford, keyboardist Chuck Leavell and backing vocalists Bernard Fowler and Chanelle Haynes.

Haynes got her chance to shine during an fiery version of “Gimme Shelter” late in the set, backing up Jagger with those impassioned lines first set to wax by Merry Clayton on the opening track of the 1969 album “Let It Bleed.”

Wood was on top of game on this night, delivering a steady string of meaty leads on such songs as “Bite My Head Off” and “You Can’t Always Get What You Want” while picking up the slack from Richards’ somewhat diminished role in the production.

The Stones didn’t hold anything back as they approached the finish line, rolling right through “Honky Tonk Women,” “Midnight Rambler” and other favorites before finishing up the main set with the always fun “Jumpin’ Jack Flash.”

Then the group returned to deliver “Sweet Sounds of Heaven” before closing up shop with — what else? — “(I Can’t Get No) Satisfaction.” Fans then left the building and made their way out into the night, looking every bit as satisfied as ever.

Kaytranada jams onstage.

Prior to the tour announcement, Kaytranada already had a busy summer and fall lined up.

At the time of publication, the 30-year-old had five (!) festival dates scheduled at venues all over the U.S.

Now, post-announcement, he’ll have even less free time these next few months.

On July 16, Kaytranada announced he will perform at venues all over the world from July through October as part of his forthcoming ‘Timeless Tour,’ named after his sonically adventurous, recently-released double album.

Midway through the run, he’ll make a stop at Queens’ Forest Hills Stadium on Friday, Oct. 4.

He won’t be going it alone, either. On select dates, the “You’re The One” mixmaster will be joined by Channel Tres, Amaarae, Sam Gellaitry, Kitty Cash and Lou Phelps.

Fans can purchase tickets for all upcoming ‘Timeless Tour’ shows on sites like Vivid Seats ; the official on-sale is Friday, July 19.

Vivid Seats is a secondary market ticketing platform, and prices may be higher or lower than face value, depending on demand.

They have a 100% buyer guarantee that states your transaction will be safe and secure and will be delivered before the event.

Kaytranada tour schedule 2024

A complete calendar including all tour dates, venues and links to buy tickets can be found below.

Kaytranada 2024 festival appearances

More than a quarter of Katranada’s North American gigs will be at festivals this year.

If you want to see a shorter set of his — along with a few other major artists — here are all the details about each of his 2024 festival appearances.

Kaytranada new music

On June 7, Kaytranada delivered his third solo studio album “Timeless” to the world.

Made up of two discs and 21 tracks, the record is a bouncy, sample-heavy funk party that never drags despite its 63 minute runtime.

Featuring guest verses from Childish Gambino, Don Toliver, Anderson .Paak, Thundercat, PinkPantheress, Mariah The Scientist and more, “Timeless” marries inventive, good time music with some of the most gifted vocalists alive.

Rather than pick favorites — if we could, we’d recommend all 21 unique, lively bops — we suggest listening to “Timeless” here .

Kaytranada special guests

Depending on the show you attend, you may see an exciting opening act or two.

To make sure you go in knowing what to expect, here’s each artist’s most streamed song on Spotify:

Channel Tres: “I’ve Been In Love”

Amaarae: “SAD GURLZ LUV MONEY”

Sam Gellaitry: “Picture In My Mind”

Kitty Cash: “Ain’t No Way”

Lou Phelps: “Come Inside”

Morgan Wallen adds second Knoxville tour date. Here's how to get in line for tickets now!

Portrait of Devarrick Turner

One night at Neyland Stadium has turned into two for country superstar Morgan Wallen! The addition of second date to his hometown tour stop in September sent fans scrambling for tickets as soon as it was announced July 17.

Wallen will perform Sept. 20 at Neyland , in addition to the previously announced Sept. 22 show. The shows are added stops to his massive One Night at a Time tour.

“Due to overwhelming demand we have added a 2nd date at Neyland Stadium!” Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center announced on July 17. The second show was announced just under two hours after tickets for the first show went on sale.

Tickets for the Sept. 20 show go on sale 11 a.m. July 18 through Ticketmaster, according to the announcement.

A Ticketmaster glitch at the time of the second show announcement, however, allowed eager fans to join the queue for tickets a day early.

Need a break? Play the USA TODAY Daily Crossword Puzzle.

At one point on July 17, as many as 70,000 people were waiting to get tickets when Ticketmaster's site showed that tickets for Sept. 20 would be be available at 1 p.m. that day. Those who made it to the front of the line, however, were met with a "tickets go on sale tomorrow" message.

As of that afternoon, the webpage for the Sept. 20 show at Neyland still read "Tickets are now on sale," with a clickable button to "join the queue" for tickets.

Tickets for the Sept. 22 show are on sale now, if you can still get one.

Neyland S tadium's seating capacity  is 101,915, nearly five times that of Thompson-Boling Arena at Food City Center, a far more frequent venue for concerts.

Taylor swift’s record-breaking tour has one flaw: merch issues.

Taylor Swift performs onstage during "Taylor Swift | The Eras Tour"

In the world of pop icon Taylor Swift, everything seems perfect. She’s now a billionaire. She’s got a charismatic boyfriend, Kansas City Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce, who’s a star in his own right. Her most recent album, Tortured Poets Department , broke all-time streaming records when it debuted.

Swift’s The Eras concert tour has met with unprecedented success. In the U.S., it contributed over $4 billion to the nation’s GDP. In the U.K., she sold out an unimaginable eight performances at Wembley Stadium, which are predicted to result in over a $1 billion boost to Britain’s GDP. There are even worries that her concerts in the EU could spark regional inflation .

Taylor Swift Merch Issues

Merchandise is another highlight of the Swift universe. Last year, The Eras merch racked up $200 million in sales .

Exactly When Apple Will Launch iPhone 16 And iPhone 16 Pro

Apple warns millions of iphone users—stop using google chrome, amazon prime day 2024 is over, but there are still some great deals.

But merchandise is one of the few weak points in the otherwise impregnable Swift fortress. Earlier this year, Axios detailed various complaints from Swift fans that included shipping delays, low quality items, slow refunds, and long lines at in-person events.

Stadium Merchandise Sales

Events at stadiums and similar venues present a unique challenge in selling merchandise, particularly when the demand is off the charts as it seems to be at Swift’s concerts.

Events happen of the space of a few hours. Thousands, or tens of thousands, of customers arrive in one place during that time window. The space available for stores is often limited. Staffing can be a problem since the work hours are short and irregular. It’s not just apparel and souvenirs, in concert and sports venues food and beverage sales suffer from similar issues.

Stadiums of every size have queue problems. Here, South Bend Cubs fans wait for food and drinks

From a fan standpoint, long waits are the biggest problem. I recently attended a minor league baseball game in South Bend, Indiana. The crowd seemed to be near the venue’s 5,000 spectator capacity. Although there were a variety of well-staffed food and drink concessions, there was always a lengthy wait at every one. Buying a hot dog and a soda could easily consume an entire inning.

Swifties’ Dilemma

Imagine... You've waited months for this night, spent a small fortune on tickets, and now you're faced with a choice – wait in a seemingly endless queue for that coveted blue crew neck shirt or risk missing Swift’s opening number. It's a dilemma facing fans around the world, from Lisbon to Tokyo.

These lines aren't just a nuisance; they're a real problem. Fans are reporting wait times of hours , sometimes missing parts of the show they paid to see. And for Swift? It means lost sales and frustrated fans.

Even when merch trucks set up in the days preceding a concert, the lines can still be long.

Making Queues Quicker

Enter an unlikely hero: Amazon. No, Jeff Bezos isn't about to duet with Taylor on stage (though I'd pay to see that). I'm talking about Amazon's retail technology, specifically their Just Walk Out (JWO) and RFID systems.

You might have encountered this tech at an airport or sports stadium. Grab what you want, walk out, and get charged automatically. No lines, no fuss. It's like magic, but with more algorithms and fewer wands. Recently, I wrote a more detailed description of Amazon’s retail tech .

Now, imagine applying this to Swift's merch stores. Fans could browse, grab their coveted items, and be into their seats in no time. The potential benefits for both fans and Swift include faster transactions, shorter lines, and likely increased sales. Most important, it’s a better fan experience.

RFID Gates To The Rescue

The technology most likely to cut the queues would be JWO RFID checkout gates. These can be set up and take down quickly, and don’t require complex camera networks and store mapping. A shopper can enter the store without a payment method, encouraging browsing. The shopper can pick up items and, when finished shopping, exit through the gate using a credit card or Amazon One palm recognition. Items the shopper has collected are automatically tallied and charged.

Amazon RFID tech automatically tallies purchases and charges customers as they exit.

Of course, there would be challenges in quickly creating and taking apart merch stores at every performance. Concert venues aren't permanent stores, and the volume of eager Swifties is no joke. But if anyone has the resources and motivation to make it work, it's the team behind the highest-grossing tour in history.

From a fan perspective, this could be a game-changer. More time to enjoy the show, less time stressing about missing out on merch. And who knows? Some fans who might be put off by an enormous line might now decide to buy something. Previously unthinkable repeat visits might be more practical without massive queues.

Not Just For Taylor Swift

The implications go beyond just Swift’s tour. This same technology is already beginning to change how merchandise is sold at concerts and sporting events. High-traffic, time-sensitive retail environments could all benefit from faster throughput.

The Seattle Seahawks Pro Shop Outlet has installed this technology with good results. Geekwire tested it out during a game, noting, “It felt like normal shopping — browse through items, try stuff on, put stuff back, etc. — until the end, when you either plug a credit card in for a few seconds or scan your palm to pay. The best part was not wasting time in line... This advantage was made more apparent as I walked down the concourse and saw a horde of people waiting to check out at the main pro shop store.”

Easier, faster merch checkouts might not generate many tabloid headlines, but it could make millions of Swifties' concert experiences just a little bit more magical. In the words of Jon Jenkins , JWO vice president, “People hate standing in line, so if we can solve that problem – it’s a meaningful problem to solve.” No doubt Taylor Swift fans would agree.

It’s happening! Morgan Wallen is coming home.

After teasing hometown fans in June, the country superstar and Gibbs High School graduate is coming back to Knoxville for a special concert Sept. 22 at Neyland Stadium. The concert is an added stop on his massive One Night at a Time tour.

Tickets go on sale through Ticketmaster 11 a.m. July 17.

“I’m coming home,” Wallen wrote in the announcement shared on X, formerly known as Twitter, on July 15. The post included a video of the singer performing in Vols orange and clips of a full Neyland, with Rocky Top playing in the background.

“I’ve had the honor of playing in a lot of college, MLB and NFL stadiums the past two years, but getting to play to my hometown at Neyland Stadium, nothing tops this for a boy from East Tennessee,” Wallen said in a press release.

Wallen is a huge Tennessee baseball fan and was in Omaha, Nebraska, to see the Vols win the College World Series championship in June. He recorded a special message for the team following their win and teased a Knoxville concert as a thank you for hosting him.

"I just wanted to say that you and the university have been extremely hospitable to me and my family and my friends, especially in Omaha," Wallen said. "So I want to return the favor, and I'm going to return the favor. I can't tell you exactly how I'm going to do that just yet, but here in a couple or few weeks, I'll be able to let you know what I mean. So just stay tuned and I'll keep y'all posted on that."

Wallen has found massive chart-topping success in recent years. He’s currently featured on the No. 2 song on the Billboard Hot 100, “I Had Some Help,” with Post Malone . His latest single, “Cowgirl,” just peaked on at the chart at No. 12.

His hit song “Last Night” has received over 1.5 billion streams globally and is the longest running No. 1 solo song in Hot 100 history (16 weeks total).

The New York Times deemed the 11-time 2023 Billboard Music Awards-winner as “one of the biggest stars in pop, period.” His third studio album, “One Thing At A Time” in 2023, topped the all-genre Billboard 200 chart for 19 non-consecutive weeks, surpassing the record for a country album set by Garth Brooks in 1991.

Coincidentally, Brooks was the last musical artist to headline Neyland Stadium . With a crowd of 84,000, Brooks' 2019 show broke the concert attendance record at the stadium. But Wallen just might break that record, too.

Rolling Stones Bring Back Octogenarian Pride, Rocking as Vigorously as Ever at SoFi Stadium Show: Concert Review

Mick Jagger performs with The Rolling Stones at The Rolling Stones ÒHackney Diamonds TourÓ held at SoFi Stadium on July 10, 2024 in Los Angeles, California.

The age question is suddenly America’s big question, as anyone who reads headlines can attest. Classic rock beat politics to the punch by at least a few years, in making that a crucial debate. There’s a general agreement that the president of the United States is not today what he was four years ago. But with the Rolling Stones coming into L.A.’s SoFi Stadium for the first time since 2021, with a lead singer who is only eight months younger than Joe Biden, can we say that this is the same group that it was three years ago?

After a rousing opening set by the War and Treaty, there was the obligatory nod to dead men coming in the Stones’ opening number. (“Start Me Up” isn’t the leadoff batter on every Stones tour — in 2021, it was relegated to ninth position — it only seems like it is, or ought to be.) From there, the theme of rocking was quickly established, with “You Got Me Rocking” — a recurring “Voodoo Lounge” cut that, honestly, the band possibly loves more than the overall fandom — followed by “It’s Only Rock ‘n Roll.” As is typical with a modern-day Stones set, there are a few wild-card slots, mostly in the first third of the show, and among them, besides the last two aforementioned songs, L.A. first-nighters also got . On another night, they might’ve gotten “”Let’s Spend the Night Together,” “Rocks Off,” “Bitch” or “Street Fighting Man.” The repertoire is deep when it comes to “surprise songs,” almost as deep as Taylor Swift’s.

The show highlight was “Brown Sugar”… sorry, just kidding, of course. (That choice is as firmly retired as Bill Wyman. Shed a wistful tear if you must for 2019, very likely the last time anyone will have heard that problematic pick in concert, though they could always surprise us with it again in 2027.) No one has yet parsed the possible issues of “Midnight Rambler” to the point of banishment, anyway — so that remains in its perennial spot as a great “11:00 number” (not quite literally, but in Broadway terms), extended as always with stops and starts so that Mick can get down on his knees at the end of the stage’s thrush ramp, and so that it can go into double-time with as much blowsy harmonica soloing as ever from Jagger and his apparently bottomless lungs. On this 2024 tour, “Midnight Rambler” is immediately succeeded by “Gimme Shelter,” sung as a duet on that same mid-floor ramp with Chanel Haynes, and you’d be hard-pressed to find a better classic-rock one-two punch. In fact, the whole last quintet of songs, also including “Honky Tonk Women,” “Paint It Black” and “Jumpin’ Jack Flash,” is as exciting a five-song run as you could put in any rock show. Even if you came to it with the hope of hearing more deep cuts, that last stretch of the main set counts as some kind of peak-level scientific/visceral programming.

Another one of those “Hackney Diamonds” numbers was saved for a penultimate encore slot: the gospel-rock-flavored “Sweet Sounds of Heaven,” performed as nearly a duet with Lady Gaga on record, and turned into a second duet of the night with Haynes on stage. Jagger must obviously be sweet on Haynes to bring her to the fore twice in one night, and it’s not hard to see why: She is unabashedly Tina, for all intents and purposes. You’re thinking along those lines even before you remember, or look up, that Haynes was plucked for this position from actually playing Tina Turner on the London stage. Of course Ike and Tina opened for the Stones on tour in the late ’60s, but having Haynes so overtly recreate her image now across two different spotlight appearances doesn’t feel like a cheap nostalgic trip. Lifeforce is lifeforce, and Haynes has it to match Jagger’s.

Is anything diminished here, as the Stones push the envelope (as a man of a similar age and status, Paul McCartney, is also doing) beyond what was imagined possible? We could tell you that Jagger avoids hitting the high notes on a few times, either doing them a step down — as in the chorus of “Honky Tonk Women” — or relegating a very, very occasional chorus line to Haynes and Bernard Fowler. But his vocals remain forceful as well as cocky and playful across the board. Of course, as he ages, maybe it will turn out to be useful that he started out slurring. To say that a frontman doesn’t miss a step takes on extra meaning when someone like Jagger is getting his steps in literally every moment he’s on stage, never planting himself for more than a few seconds at a time. To see him skip down the ramp — or to see him teasingly lift up his T-shirt to reveal a flash of skinny torso — is to see breezy youth personified, albeit in an admittedly somewhat gnarled package; it’s an oxymoron you can waste time trying to unpack, or just find ongoing delight in.

Richards and Wood also have some built-in advantage to always having fallen on the side of “ragged but right.” Perhaps one day one of them will be more ragged than the other, but for now, they make enjoyably equal contributions as soloist on roughly alternating selections — with “Before They Make Me Run” providing a special opportunity for some twin lead playing, even as the tune is nearly as sax-section-driven as it is powered by multiple shredding guitars.

The husband-wife duo the War and Treaty proved a perfect choice for a Stones opening act, with serious dollops of soul, country and blues. And Tanya Trotter proved to be, besides Haynes, the other Tina soundalike of the night, joined by Michael Trotter, who answers the rarely-asked musical question: What if Ike had been a nice guy and able to belt it out as gloriously as his better half?
